"Seeing any symptoms or any signs or anything? Okay. First question is she too young? No, generally we do prefer a dog to be bright on their second cycle. We just hate for them to get pregnant around that 6 month Mark. It's kind of like a teenage pregnancy. So you're okay there. Now, as far as pregnancy wise, duration, dogs are pregnant for about 63 64 days. You know, significant physical changes you may not know for a full month or so. And the trick is that dogs can also have false pregnancies. So that can also look like they're pregnant. And even produce milk. So some of these physical changes, they're not foolproof, but you know, we would be watching for weight gain. An increased appetite usually kicks in about a month into a pregnancy. And then it's a couple of weeks later that we actually will start to see things like milk production. But some of the behaviors like nesting where a dog will kind of build little beds or try to find a little comfy spot to sleep for the pups. That can also happen with a false pregnancy. So sometimes we have been fooled, both veterinarians and people alike that have pets. So one of the things I might suggest is to actually have your baby taken to the veterinarian about three to four weeks after possible breeding time. And they can do an ultrasound and look to see the diagnose pregnancy. And that'll help kind of put it timeline on things as well because we can age the puffs based on the size of the puppy's skull. And that will help you in preparing for when we might be having some babies delivered. Okay. We can always do x-rays as well when we get a little further along the lines about 45 days after breeding, but by that point, things are if you're asking, are we pregnant or not? Usually it's a little bit more apparent by that point because you're a little further into it. Okay. My other question, I guess that in parallel to that is that I think she has not yet had her one year shots kind of test as my wife on that. She's kind of that slide and would that be something that you would want to wait till we know for sure whether she's pregnant? Absolutely. Yeah. Don't vaccinate a dog that we suspect could be pregnant. There can be some problems with that. So but yeah, shame shame. We always want to make sure our pregnant babies are caught up the shots caught up to date with their shots beforehand. 'cause that means the babies will have a little better chance at immunity to many diseases. Okay. Thank you. Thanks for your call, Greg. You are listening to animal radio. Well, I don't believe. Well, tell me what happened first. Apparently they said that the dog had a broken jaw due to the due to a grooming related accident, but nobody really knows and it's a lot of speculation. But that's why we need regulation in the industry because they don't eliminate and fiction. As the veterinary professional, granted, it was only one picture I saw. But it looked to me like it was a little poodle that had a rotten mouth. And when you have untreated dental disease, it actually creates weak bones. And you'll get osteomyelitis or even sometimes pulling teeth from rotten mouths. The jaw can break. So I kind of questioned the background medical history before I would ever put a judgment out and say, you know, he had rotten teeth and that was another contributing factor before I would ruin someone's career. I'd want to know that. Here's the problem I have with that. Those questions needed to be asked. Because again, if you have a pet's coming in and I'm the groomer, I'm going to look at this. I'm going to check the teeth because it is something that I've had problems with in the past. And I'm going to look at it and I'm going to give them and say, listen, we have a problem here. And X, Y, and Z could happen. Your pet's not going to let me touch their face because it's due to discomfort. I can't grew it until you get veterinary attention. So that's the only problem that I do have when the general public isn't explained. Sometimes they are, and they ignore it, but there's times where as a professional I think you got to be a little bit more proactive and deny extreme cases like that just because of this type of situation. True. Okay, let's take one for if this is for Joey. Okay, for one for groomer Joey villani, we have kitty on the phone. Hey kitty, welcome to the show. Hello. What's going on? Well, I have a cat that is too fat. She doesn't groom herself. And I was wondering if I could get her shaved instead of listen with the hairballs and having her brushed out to have to take her to the data and then brush her out because she won't let me do it. So she doesn't she's not happy being groomed either. Is that correct? No. Okay. Let's do it. She bites you if you try to do it okay. So that's something believe me. A nasty cat is a lot more dangerous than a nasty dog. They have a lot of types of bacteria in their mouth, and when they bite you sometimes it could be pretty nasty. Is it a long or a short haired cat, first of all? She's long haired. Okay, okay. And have you ever had a groomer work on the cat? No. Okay, what I would try. Not that I'm trying to take anything out of the veterinarian's hands. But sometimes in a grooming someone a professional groomer because they do it all the time, may have a lot more success removing the knots and tangles. Now depending upon how serious they are, would really determine if they could remove them or not. A lot of times the cat, though, even though it seems like this hopeless, if you take your time and you have two people work on the cat where they take the time, the cats not stressed out. A lot of times you could work it out. Now can you clip the cat down, you absolutely can, but my question to you is did you ever do that before.

"Groomers. There's currently they are not. This all spurred after incidents where dogs were dropped off at the groomer, and it turned out to be a fatal trip for these pets. Joining us is rosemary Marcello, and she, along with Joey, our very own Joey villani have worked very hard to regulate and get licensing for pet groomers. Rosemary created bijou's law after her dog that was killed at one of those local chain box stores in their grooming department. And of course, if you're a regular listener, you know that Joey is pretty passionate about this. By putting a license on a pet coma, it's not a straitjacket for them. What it's going to do, it's going to make them an educated professional. So when they are using equipment, when they just learning how to pick a dog up because this is a problem, in my school, we had to teach you to proper way to pick a dog up and put it on the table, something that sounds so meaningless is so important. Not to walk away or turn your back to when they're on. I mean, just little things, but you want to know something if you do not practice it and you don't study it, you don't know it and I'm not saying that people want things to happen to their clients, pets, but because they're not educated and there's no safeguards in place, it happens. So now rosemary is pioneering something that could be wonderful for everyone's dogs. I mean, think of all the pet owners out there that didn't know what was going on, and like I said, I was an advocate from the very beginning where we needed some sort of safeguard. Now it's out there. So unfortunately, bijou did not pass in vain because this is going to protect so many pets out there and it's well needed and thank you rosemary for actually stepping up to the plate and because she's been under attack and I will tell you that because I know that as a fact, thank you so much. Who's attacking her? Well, you have a lot of unfortunately. There's a lot of people. And when I say a lot of people, I'm not saying the majority. But there's a good majority of people in my industry that they're not looking at the big picture. And a lot of them are very probably very good groomers that are safe and they're the ones that are saying, you know, this is going to be a hardship on it. And it's not. It's not going to be a hardship at all. It's a change in how you do things. And I know I've said this a million times, it's the seatbelt wall. We never liked wearing a seatbelt and then now if we don't wear it we feel naked. So the petrom is that our against this need to just rethink it. This is about keeping pets safe. That's it. That is what this is about. It's about keeping pets safe and let's remember that that is the issue on hand. And we're still going to make money and we're still going to do what we do every day and we're still going to love it for the people who love it and the people who don't like it, you know what, you shouldn't be doing it anyway, because it's not for everyone. You have to be a pet lover and you know if you're a pet lover, you want them safe. So it's important. Is this bill just for New Jersey or is it nationwide? Currently, it's just in New Jersey. I actually have it on assemblyman rose desk, out in California. And North Carolina is also looking at it at the moment. Shouldn't there also be in my opinion I'm still blown away by this that maybe there should be a bill that these people can't get away with having your dog die in their custody and not telling you how or why. I would be insane. Yes, full disclosure. If that happens, well, we'll hoping to actually prevent this from happening by putting license groomers in place. So that we have professionals and not somebody who took a part time job on the weekends to grow on your dog, which is what actually can be done now because there's nothing in place to stop that. So I see a picture here of one of your billboards. One of the billboards that says help us regulate petrom. Who pays for these billboards? That billboard was actually at a test out in North Carolina, and I paid for that billboard out of pocket. Okay. And your lawsuit, what are you asking for in your lawsuit? Well, for the lawsuit, I sued for the maximum amount, which right now in most states, I believe in all states, but right now, in New Jersey, is $10,000. That's the maximum because they consider dogs property right now. So there's a cap. Another bill that I'm trying to pass after fees bill would be called the sensing being act and the scenting being asked is actually inactive in several countries right now and maybe even some states. That would remove ownership. In other words, do I want to be seen as a piece of furniture, but rather as a living being. And that might change things. We have got forbid something happen. You have a different way of going about this based on who your lawyer is. And again, this is really not about suing this is about preventing dogs from dying so that we don't get to that stage so that everybody could take a lesson from what I've been through and these other 47 people that have been through and prevent this from happening going forward. Okay, what's the website? LL dot com. And we'll put links to everything you've heard on today's show over at animal radio dot pet rosemary marchando. Thank you so much for joining us. "It's animal radio celebrating the connection with our pets. Joey villani, not a week goes by that he doesn't talk about bijou's law. And the amazing legislation that's happening in nau Jersey. He said we had to get rosemary on rosemary marche. She is the inspiration to human behind this. And we do have her on the phone today. Hi, rosemary, how are you doing? Hi. Good. Thank you so much for having me. Well, so now tell us about the whole story. I guess bijou was your dog? Yes. My dog vision was a very healthy 6 year old sheet two. Then I brought into a very well-known pet store chain for a routine grooming. And the groomer said to me, I hope this storm doesn't give me a hard time I had a bad day. Oh wow. And this is before everything. This is before. Okay. I'm giving it to you right from the beginning. And, you know, I didn't expect the outcome to be what it became. But sure enough was in 45 amendments. They called me to tell me that these U was dead. What? happened? They would not disclose to me. What had happened? They did not let me speak to the groomer. Nor the store manager. So at that point, I called the police to come and make a police report because I needed some kind of documentation as to what was happening. Then I eventually took it into my own hands after I found out a little closer that I found out that dog rumors aren't licensed. And here I am thinking that I did the right thing by bringing the issue to a very well-known touch to a change and thinking if anything, I was protected by them. Sure, sure. And clearly, that wasn't the case. And that's how bishop's Bill started to come together. I went to my local assembly person, salaries for nearly huddle. For which I had a conversation with her and I told her what had happened to me and I explained to her that there are no laws that require dog rumors to be licensed. Was she surprised by that? She was appalled. Okay. I mean, everybody who I tell the story to invariably, the first thing they said is, oh, do oklahomas aren't licensed? When we live in a world where male technician is licensed, your locksmith is licensed. It's hard to believe that people who own your dogs do not require any kind of licensure. As a matter of fact, not only in New Jersey, but in most of the country, if not, I think only two states require licensure at this point for global. Now what does it mean when it's state license? Do they got to take a test? What they got to be certain age? What's the deal? Yes. Somebody wanted to be a licensed groomer. They would take a practical and written test that is given by the state upon completion, they would apply for a license that would cost about $50 depend again on the state and you will have be a license professional like a nurse or anybody else who requires a license to practice their craft. Were you able to get these remains back and do a necropsy on him? I did. And for reasons, obviously, reasons that have to do with the lawsuit. I can't talk about that. But yes, they took complete liability. And did you find out what happened? Are you comfortable with that knowing what happened or you're still don't know exactly what happened with BC I still don't know exactly what happened because nobody completely explained it to me. But the fact that they took liability and the fact that the groom said to me, I hope this drug doesn't give me a hard time I had a bad day sort of seems a little suspect to me because I never expected to get this kind of an outcome by just taking my dog in for a routine grooming. By the way, that would have been my red flag I'm having a bad day. I would have turned around right at that point. Of course, hindsight to 2020, but at the time, you think oh, the guy just blown off a little steam. You're not really thinking he's going to kill my dog. Yeah, we all have bad days now and then. Yeah. I'm just amazed. How long ago was this rosemary because I can't believe that that was your child, as I feel about my animals and we all do here. But how long ago was that and that you still don't know? These who died January 11th, 2012. I started pursuing legislation in 2014. So it made it through the assembly once before, but I have to give some credit with credit is due to New Jersey dot com. New Jersey dot com put out an investigative report where they found a desk of 47 dogs. And some of these big box chains. And that sort of lit the fire under the bill for the bill to start coming back into focus. Again, and to get it through to the General Assembly here in New Jersey. You know, all of the anger aside because believe me, I would be through the roof, but my God, I'm so sorry. I can't even imagine. Thank you. Thank you. You know, I've been working closely with rosemary and the assembly and I am a big supporter of this bill and hope that it goes through its final stages, which we don't see anything that's going to stop it. It went through the assembly like a freight train where there was nobody that was against it. When I sit at politician wise and it's probably going to do the same thing in the Senate. But my big issue was is because as you guys know, my claim to.

This is animal radio, featuring your Dream Team, veterinarian doctor Debbie white and groomer Joey villani, and here are your hosts, Hal Abrams and Judy Francis. She is perhaps the smartest women I know. And I'm talking about doctor Debbie. You want to talk to her? You have a question about your animal? She teaches me so much. Last hour I learned, yes, there's a difference between a opossum and possum. One spelled with an O, one spelled with a P, I just thought that perhaps the possum was just missing the O. Somebody maybe spelled it incorrectly. We said it was a spelling thing. It isn't. There's two different two different kinds of animals. Are they both marsupials? They are both marsupials, but totally different ranges of where they live and their physical appearances are very different. But a lot of people I think we slang talk, we didn't talk about possums. At least in Indiana, we talk about potholes. Southern Indiana, I'm from north. So I actually don't have that accent. I blame the Beverly hillbillies because they always talk about possum pie. Yes, they do. And it should have been O paused in pie, right? Correct. Yes. See? You're correct in them. So thanks to you. The reason we're bringing up the el possums is because there's an opossum rescue. Oh, Judy is just Googled pictures of possums. That's a positive. That's an Australian, that's different from our old pasta. Here hold it up to the microphone. So listeners can see. They're kind of cute. They are that little short face. They kind of look like almost like gizmo, like a little gremlin or something. Bushy tail. Do people have pets like that? They do see, we see some opossums come through my office that people have them as pets. And I think a lot of people get them when they're little newborns. And then if you bobble feed them, they tend to be a better pet than just catching an adult in the wild and trying to make them a pet. Then I will tell you it's not something I would advise for the team at heart. But when you get on young, they came to you and they can be raised and live with people. But it's not for everybody. And we certainly, their wild animals, so you want to keep that in mind before you bring one into your home. I have so many questions for this lady and that's coming up this hour in just a few minutes. But first, your calls. Which one, Judy, two? Line two? We have, is it Lois? Hey, Lois. Hi, how are you today? Good. Welcome to the show. Thank you. I have talked to you. You just found us? Yeah. Where have you been I missed you? I was going with Louis. Lois, I want you to meet doctor Debbie. Hey there. She's our veterinarian. She'll answer your vet medical questions. So what do you have going on Lois? Okay, I have two most cases. One, I was someone gave it to me, but please take my baby. I just can't handle her. Well, I took her and she has this problem where she licks her feet. She looks and she likes me up at night, she likes. She's got my other mouth she's looking to the vet, they gave her to meet men's room. That works when it goes off and of course, you know, it's back again. Then I went back to the vet and I gave her some steroids, which I didn't like at least try to have I bought some expenses to just pose to make her not lick and feel like you can hold her and love on it. And as you're doing it, she looks. So you said the other dog is now doing this behavior as well. The other dog is now doing it yes and that's what I have to do for a month old. Okay, no. On the foot area, do you see any areas where there's lost hair or there's sores or red spots? No, but they used to go with the long haired floor of the room and cut it all off. They gave her the gave both of them a poodle puppy feet cut. They're all shaved off the ears and her tail. And they just licked. So my friend says, we're just all about just hoping a little like another dog with a girl. So and it worked, but I'm not always there to do that. Well, sure, you gotta sleep at night, right? Well, you know, the number one thing that causes dogs to lick their feet is allergies. The whole category of allergies in some form, whether they're inhaling allergies or food related allergies. And if we saw some improvement with benadryl, you know, maybe it's an allergy kind of playing role, but you said the prednisone, the steroid, nothing happened with that, and nothing got better? The Ben and drill slowed it down. So as we're all, they started looking. And I don't want to keep them dope. Yeah, and you know, if a pet isn't responding with an itching or licking behavior, when we're giving a steroid to me, it says eh, let's stop our direction because generally that works pretty nicely for most types of allergies. It doesn't work super for food related allergies. So my number one thing I'd say is in that category is you know I get these kids on a hypoallergenic diet, something that's prescribed by your veterinarian preferably so they can guide you through those steps and find something, stick with that for about four to 6 weeks and see if the foot looking decreases. If not, we may try another diet. But that's one thing that we can try from the source and try more directly to control some of this itching. The other things to think about when I have a dog that's itching and licking and I have multiple dogs in the house all doing the same behavior. I got to think about something infectious. And that's a scarier freaking out, but there are some types of infections that dogs can have that can mimic normal things like allergies that we kind of blame for just about every skin condition out there. And it's natural. We just want to kind of say, oh, we just got allergies. That's why he looks at that hole in his side or choose his feet or always has sores on his belly. That's a common thing. But we can see microscopic parasites or mites that can be present in sometimes just select areas of a pet's body. It doesn't always have to be generalized like fleas or ticks. The other thing is we can run into fungal infections, kind of like ringworm. And the foot area is not uncommon to either mites or fungal infections. So that for me would be I love CSI. I love kind of getting to the nitty Gritty of finding out why these things happen and not just trying to throw medicine at animals that we don't really need to. So my recommendation would be, have your vet take a couple samples, have them check for mites, have them check for a ringworm by a test method. And try to rule that out as a possibility. But many pets, I will actually go on forward. If we've got multiple doggies in the house, I'll treat them for mites for a couple months and see if we're seeing any improvement in that foot looking and chewing. Because honestly, I can't tell you how many pets that I've seen come in year after year old. I need medicine for the allergies. And then one time I finally get my samples and I finally get to do some tests and I say, wow, how do you feel about your dog? You have in mites in their feet or in their back all this time and we've been using the wrong approach. So definitely I'd say that would be one important step for you there. And you know, there are some doggies. Foot licking, it can be a behavioral problem. So almost like an OCD issue. Before I blame that as a possible thing for your babies, I'd want to make sure we check out these medical things. And see if we can try some other remedies because yeah, there's a lot more we can do for your babies there. And a little Maltese, I bet they're a little feeder, probably kind of stained red or even brown, if they're licking them all. It's actually. The other one is you just didn't do it that, but when she sees the wonder they start to do it if I know my notes, you know, start to look at laris. Yeah. White dogs typically, this Brown stating. It almost looks like rust on their fur. It's from a pigment that is found in dog's saliva and in their tears. So it's not blood necessarily, things like that. But yeah, that very kind of red brown staining is just a sign. It's a veterinary sign we look around. If I see that, I usually can tell. Ah, your baby's been licking, huh? So we also lick your hand and she's coming to you. Your child's pattern she licked through the whole treatment at tongue just never stopped. Oh, okay, yeah. So she might have a little bit of some doggy OCD there for that explanation. So oh, gosh, there's so many things we can try for your baby. And I think that might be the key here is we need to kind of start some other remedies and do a little diagnostic test and make sure we head down the right path here because we could have a lot of different options here for your baby and what might be the right answer. So I hope that's not too much info to throw at you there lowest, but we can do some things and give your babies a little scratch on their head and a little lick on the ear if they like that. Or if you want to do that. You're not grossed out. This is doctor Debbie, we are waiting for your call. Will this portion of animal radio is underwritten by Kensington books? "Sorry Joey that she got coal in your stocking this year and that was not me that gave it to you. I'll tell you that right now. You know what? I'd rather get a call and I'll tell you why. Why? Because I know that whatever my wife is going to spend on Christmas gifts, it's all going to come out of my bank account. So Cole was about not being expensive. His about the cheapest thing out there. So when I get cold, it's actually a good thing I'm a happy boy when I get cold for Christmas. It depends on what she got for everybody else with your credit card. That's the big problem there. Listen, you know, forget about it. That's gonna be anyway, so I take that on the chin. I took last week off. I flew to Denver to visit family. More and more, you're seeing animals on the airplane. There was two dogs and one cat. And that's definitely the most I'd ever seen. They were very good. I heard one bark, but there was one problem that I just want to give people heads up. I thought these FAA regulated carriers would mean that they'd allowed me to carry a pet on. Apparently this one person that brought their dog on, it didn't fit within the carry on size. So just because it says FAA approved, doesn't mean you can bring it on board. And they actually had to check their pet. Down below. I hate that. Well, and you know all about the recent story of the little terrier that got a little rambunctious, sedatives wore off in the airplane. So they took them out to try to calm him and he proceeded to bite two different individuals and run them up on the airplane and cause the airplane to have to take an emergency landing. Oh no. So, I have a huge problem with this because I'm all about well behaved pets, but more importantly, for me, this is all about picking the right pet to travel 'cause I don't think every pet should get on an airplane nor is it the right thing to do for the people around you. Really you have to select if your pet is a good traveler and is appropriate to get on an airplane and I hate tranquilizing. I refuse to tranquilize pets when they travel by air because there's so many unknowns. So for me, this was a big tusk to those other pet lovers that do things right and recognize if their pets should not fly. Well, how do you know? Because getting in a car and getting on a plane are two different things. Your animal might be great in a car, but how do you know how it's going to react in a plane? You know, it's similar though. So if your pet gets aimed, amped up in the car, especially if you can't put them securely in a pet carrier, then we're going to potentially have a problem. So you need to be able to comfortably restrain your pet in a pet carrier and have them be okay with that. If they are not okay, then I am not going to try to tranquilize the pet. I'm not going to try to torture that animal. It's just not going to be a vacation that that dog needs to go to. What could go wrong if you sedate them? Well, it high altitudes. They're excited. We don't know exactly how the tranquilizers could affect the cardiovascular system. So if there's an underlying heart problem or a breathing problem, it could cause them to have a fatal episode, and especially these little lugs with the Swiss and faces, they've already got problems in traveling because when they get excited, they have trouble panting. So the last thing we want to do is sedate these pets. So physiology is different when you're in the air just like you get dehydrated when you fly. Yeah, and in the cabin, I think a lot of people feel more comfortable because they can see their pet, but clearly in this situation, you know, that dog was still just jazzed up and anxious and tranquil is still did not do enough. So I think it's really our pet parent responsibility to recognize, you know what? Fluffy's not going to dig this. You know, let's leave her behind to have a pet soder take care of her rather than torture all those people and change their flight plans, which I'm sure though they were not thrilled about. And what about their ears? The airplane it affects my ears, but as the dogs, ears, a different makeup where it doesn't feel that pressure, do they feel it just like we do? You know, we would suspect that they feel at the same way we do. It's one reason I will not fly a pet if they have an ear infection because I flew ones with an ear infection, especially in an unpressurized cabinet and it was horrible. I thought I was dying. So yeah, we want pets to be in good health to be in sound physical condition and mental condition for travel and we want to be really hip and comfortable with the idea of being confined in a carrier and not being mommy's laugh because that can't always happen on airplane and usually get in trouble for that. Good advice. Doctor debby's answering your questions have along with drew or Joey villani, vladi the world famous Russian dog wizard and animal communicator joy, Turner. Isn't that what we hired him for? He's just a little nervous. I mean, he's been chomping at the bit all day, and he's coming on glued. Well, he's going to become glue if he doesn't stay in the right place this time. I just need one day at the end of this song. No sneezes or wheezes or other horse noises. Oh, I don't know. What part of nay doesn't he understand? I just can't work this one. While he was fine and rehearsal, I know he can do it. Just give him one more chance. Okay, but no more horsing around in there. Hello, Nelly. This horse. That was really good, but we're gonna try it. One more time. You're doing just great. Completely horrible. Remember, it's one day at the end of the song. Just relax. No mister just made the very end of the song. All right, sewing is wild oats. Are you ready? Oh, my side. This horse. Places people. All right. They ride, take 44. How a room's and Judy Francis and in just a few minutes anthro zoologist, which is apparently an emerging field. Anthro zoologist, John Bradshaw will be back with us, of course, he's written so many books. We've had him on for about each and every book that he's had. Last time he had him on, he told us that we could train our cats. I still haven't had any luck in that. Good luck with that. Yeah, they've trained us. His new book, the animals among us, how pets make us human. And he's going to talk about how it's just in our nature to love pets. And I want to find out why some animals are pets. Family members and with some animals are food. That's what I want to find out. I'm going to ask him about that. Also, we never asked him about his life and his animals. I want to know, he probably has a house full of animals, right? Yeah. He's got to do all that research. So I will ask that stupid question that I asked. Jackson. Jackson galaxy. Do you have cats? I will ask John. The obvious question. What animals do you have? And that's on the way in just a couple of minutes. Laurie, what are you working on? Well, there's another one of these cases in the news, and it's one of those cases that would just be your worst nightmare. Your dog is supposedly euthanized. By the vet, and then to find out months later that the animal is still alive. And in this case happened in New Jersey and we'll tell you all about it. Wait a second, didn't you just do you did this new story? Didn't you? I mean, I think that was Utah, though. You mean this has happened again? Again, again, yeah. Wow. It's kind of weird. I think probably most of us who are pet lovers probably tend to hold our animals as they're being euthanized, but apparently, I guess, well, it's doctor doctor Debbie. Maybe that's not done as often as we think it is. Oh, you need to be present is what you're saying from now on. You need to be present. We'll find out in just a few ideas. Which one are we going to Judy? We're going to go to line one. Pepper. What a pretty neat pepper. The music now, sir. Well, that's the person's name. Oh, it's the person. All right, well, it ruins that. Hi pepper, how are you? I'm fine, and I want to tell you, thank you so much for taking my call. Well, of course, with such a pretty name. How did you get the name pepper? I eat about 5 gallons of jalapeno peppers a week. Oh my. So it's not your name. The dog likes him too, huh? Now you don't have a regular name for the dog, do you? Well, I named him Casper because he's white. Okay. What's going on with Casper there? Well, I have two dogs. One is I have an ease and one is a bichon Casper. I had cast for about two years and I was making his own songs, which was ground Turkey, brown line, and on by the bag of frozen vegetables and put it in there and everything was going fine. I'm an over the road truck driver. Let me tell you that first. Okay. And all of a sudden he started getting like flatter infection kidney infection. One right after another. And I mean, it's not that I'm not taking him out and walking him. It's not that I'm not letting him walk long enough. I mean, every time I would go to the bed, it'd be like 354 $150 while they try to track this thing down. They treat it. They even went as far as to give me a prescription takes a Walgreens because he had to be on antibiotics for so long one time. Okay. And then you start chewing it as pause. And it's paused to turn pinkish looking and all around his mouth, real pinkish looking, and then he got another butter and thick. I take him back to the vet. He said, well, she goes, this just isn't right. Now this is when we were home, just about every weekend. So she did some investigating and she told me she said he needs to go. He's got a protein, a problem of simulating protein. And we need to put them on the urinary ISO. Okay. Well, I've got him on that, but I was just wondering if there is another alternative to it that this dog's big for vegetables. Or vegetables. He loves vegetables. All right. Listen, he loves jalapeno peppers. Any kind of vegetable that you will give him. Now, I want to back up for a minute because you said with Casper that he was having a lot of issues just because when I hear about a bichon who's having problems in the urinary nature, they are a breed very prone to bladder stones and particularly calcium oxalate based bladder stones. So one of the methods to deal with that is we will try a low protein diet and the SO type food if that's the one that you're talking about. By made by royal Canaan, that is appropriate for that kind of dog that has those kind of urinary issues. It is a low protein food. So if that's somehow related to his previous signs, then I would definitely endorse that prescription basically for you. You haven't had a problem since. Well, there you go. Then it's doing something. Well, at least I'm speculating. It's changed it all out. Sometimes it's anywhere from two to four months before we get home. And I realized this is the prescription dog food and it's hard for me to get an I am going home mix with you and I do have a couple of hands, but is there if I get in a bind? Is there anything else? The trick is there's probably some things that we can use short term retreat foods that would be appropriate for a dog on this food. But I'm going to say it's a little hard to just pick a food that we're going to be able to substitute because this is a therapeutic food. It is basically gearing the urine into a certain environment so we can hopefully prevent those problems. Now, there are some treats that we can do. Before I even get there, I was going to say, at least at my office, in many veterinary offices around the country, they may have the option to order online for these prescription foods and to have those shit to your home. Because it is very much only like ten miles from me and the problem is getting to.

It gives me great honor to present to you the dog father Joey villani on animal radio. How you doing? I'm doing great. How are you? Good. Where are you today? No, let me guess. Let me guess. Go ahead. Mozambique. No, not Mozambique. Nope. No, no. Okay. Just throwing it out there. I'm actually on my stomping grounds in New Jersey today where it's getting cold back here, you know? Can't wait to come back out west. Oh, good. Do you have a tip for us today? And this is one which relates to an article that was published. So I'm going to say about a month ago that a pet groomer that was very abusive to a pet according to the article, but nothing's been proven yet. The pet died in the groomer's care. The groom was turned in by one of her employees, was incarcerated and bail was put up. But of course, when something like this goes out there, it rains havoc all over the industry where every pet girl in the world is bad. And I want to discuss what you need to look for. When you bring your pet to a pet girl, remember one thing you're bringing it into a profession which I don't say proudly is not policed and regulated. Anyone could become a pet girl or even you could have, and you could open up and take someone's pet and not have any formal training. But if you're just going there with your pet, ask a couple questions. Have you been to school? And most groomers haven't, and I wouldn't, you know, shy away from because they haven't because some of the most experienced petrum is I know never went to school. Ask them how long they've been in business. What they're training is, do they have repeat education? Asked to see the back of the song, going and look, does it look clean? Does it smell clean? How do the groom is look? Do they look professional or are they standing there on jeans and t-shirts grooming? It's that whole thing. If you wouldn't have your hair done there, don't leave your pet. If you have an inkling that something is not right, don't leave your pet there. Ask all the questions you need to feel comfortable. And if the groom does not want to answer, go to somebody else. They can't wear jeans, huh? Well, I'm gonna tell you why. I was really, really a stickler on uniforms, because hair sticks to it. Now do I want to see somebody with hair all over themselves? They need to look like a trained professional because if they are, at least you know that they are investing in their careers. And I'm not saying that grooming up with t-shirts and jeans isn't good. It isn't a professional, but you wanna know something? It's not telling me anything really good about them. They should look like a professional. A veterinarian looks like a veterinarian, a pet girl should look like a pet groomer, but could structure work 'cause you look like a good structure worker. You know, you see where I'm going with it? Yeah. How do you dress when you go in? I'll be honest with you, I have grooming pants on, and I have a grooming smart that looks like a black shirt. So when you see me, you think that I'm going out for Friday night. What about like when we come home from the groomers? What are some of the signs that maybe it wasn't great a great place to go? The biggest sign is this. If you didn't have drastic change in the haircut. Now what in my draft drastic changes? If a dog isn't bad shape, it had to be cut down real short. Dogs are going to respond sometimes in a negative man. They're going to go in the house and they're going to hide and they're not going to want to see you and they're going to feel shy. That is because of the drastic change. They know there's a change you don't know what it is. But if your pet just has a routine haircut and comes home and is acting weird and is acting shy, and when you go to unpick the pet up and before you get your hands on the floor, it's whimpering because they're afraid that you're going to hurt them. That is the telltale sign. Maybe something good did not happen in the song. Now, it might be absolutely nothing, but it couldn't hurt to call up your pet Roma. And you know what a petroleum shouldn't get defensive about it. They should explain to you, say, no, you know, we had no problems here. But sometimes people will get defensive on. As soon as you get the that's when my antenna would go up because there's no reason for it. Do you ever have anybody come in and say, hey, listen, we'd like you to just meet our pet. I know I do this with veterinarians before I take them to a veterinarian. I'll bring them in for a little visit. The other veterinarian takes care of them and talks to them. Absolutely. And it's important. In my class, we talk about greeting the client first. When they come in. But before we greet the client, we greet their pet, okay? We want you to know that we care about your pet more than anything else. That's first and foremost when you come into my care. Okay. Joey villani the dog father here on animal radio..

"Just found out. We're gonna have giveaways of this cat wind. It's a it's a non alcoholic wine and just a few minutes. We're gonna talk about the pino meow and the moscato wine that apollo peak is making in vivere awesome. Yes it is and definitely want to try some on the cats but wherever we give it to. They'll have to try it out and they'll have to report back to us. That's with pic picture. We wanna see your cattle buzzed up on the piano. meow wine. Yeah so what's happening over there in the newsroom. Lorie brooks coming up in chicago there. Are these ghost. Busting cats actually rat busting cats. But they call them the ghostbusters. And what happens when they come face to face with a fat rats so big. They've named jesus that's on the way right here on animal radio. Stick around for that. I've got to say. I work with the best dream team in the business. One of the greatest members bit along with us. Two thousand eight would be the dogfather. Joey villani and i think it's your anniversary so welcoming i is it. I was just thinking that. I think it's coming soon if not we're going to have a little anniversary party for you want cake. Consider it done right so listen the you know what you know. Sometimes you sit here. I mean. I've i've done since two thousand eight you'd think about order grooming tips. I've done sometimes tips. Come to you in the middle tonight or they smack you square in face and this one definitely did was last started had my sliding door open the screen closed and i woke up to the horrific smell of a skunk and as i said up there we go. Maybe it's time to talk about because the skunks out right now This time of the year gets a little bit cooler out Usually now or or in the spring you see a lot of skunk activity and It's funny because a friend of mine's dog skunk thumb just two days ago and they called me up worldwide do panicking tomato we have. What did he know. What are you took the words out of my mouth. And and maybe regurgitate them Because tomato juice is is horrible. really I'm not going to say that it doesn't work city acidity in the tomatoes. Really what they say takes the smell scott but i think the person who invented that was really just really hated the person who's got sprayed by a skunk when you do that the amount of mass that it makes compared to the amount of smell it actually takes off of the pet is almost i. It's i've known people who have done that before they've come to the grooming salon and they were crying and they not only had a house that spo- like skunk because the dog was running all over with also had a red red house gained. Clean that up. So here's the thing. The first thing i do is is the smell is going to be horrific Especially when when you drive past in a car and you spell it anyway oh skunk and some people say like that. Sound some people who say. Don't some people actually like some people do but until you actually come in contact with it mean. It's one most horrific things that you'll experience in in your house. Sometimes we'll fill up for days with this so this is what you wanna do if you can do it outside do it outside. If it's too cold you can't. But the first thing is get a degree the quickest and easiest degree. So you're going to have in your house because this isn't going to happen during normal hours because it never does. This is going to be two o'clock in the morning where you can't go anywhere. So get that dish detergent out if you have don. I know that works great. And you've got to take a quarter cup of dawn to a gallon of water and you're gonna mix that up now. The worst thing you could do is wet. The pet i. Because when i wet it it's kind of like when you get an oil stain and you know if if sometimes if you put powder or something on it it'll it'll take it out but if you wash the gombe and you're going to set that stain in what the same thing is going to happen with the skunk odor. It's going to set itself right in there and you're going to be extremely hard to get out. So what i wanna do is his. I wanna break any oils in the skunk spray. So i'm going to apply this mixture of degreaser and water okay dish detergent and water onto my pet. Now don't get in. There is because it will extremely burn. Okay it's very dry to the coat but unfortunately this is this. Is you know we'll condition. We'll get it out shampoo and really good rinse it out and then do a second treatment again and rinse it out and then you could follow up with with a pet conditional be great. If you don't have a pet condition us people condition to get some type of moisture on onto coat when it gets in on the face. Now this is this is hard to use on a face because you don't want to get it around the eyes muzzle and a lot of times. They get it in their mouth when they get in their mouth. Unfortunately they're just going have to go away but on the face what works great is Listerine and you can get the antiseptic. Now you can get the knockoff versions from the dollar store. Works really good because what it'll do is breakdown. It'll breakdown yours. but again don't wet it. I have solidified. It's going to stay there for a long time. So what i could do. I could take a cotton ball and again you don't wanna get it in eye but around the muzzle around around the cheeks The the places. That's a little bit hard. Sometimes shampoo can use that and it works really really really well so there you go okay and you're not gonna get it all out but you're gonna get it's going to be very very bearable at that point. How long will it last after that point. Here's the thing it it all depends on how hard a dog gets sprayed. I've had dogs six months later when and especially when they get wet when they get wet you usually smell it again and You know your dog out. In the rain you'd think it's gone and there are no comeback skunk and it's fluffy that still smells like skunk get spread six months ago so it really all depends but it it could be up to six months okay so the biggest takeaway here is. Don't use the tomato juice. Don't let them that. That was brought up by. I believe that tomato juice industry trying to sell more to mortgages dawn dish detergent as usual. One of the things. That other big takeaway. How do outside like joey said joey. Villani the dog fathers on animal radio. Animal radio this is a whole radio baby. There is a country where the people live longer than we do here in the united states and now they're animals live longer too will have to find out what the secret is. I'll tell you must be greece. Don't belong in in greece on those mediterranean islands. I thought you meant in greece as in french fries. Either half okay. That's on the way. Let's go to your calls. I for dr. Debbie and joey villani. Well hello there. Kathy harry doing. How are you good. Are you on a speakerphone on. I'm wearing my headset okay. Are you in the bathroom. Exactly a small room down. Okay now you sound great. So where are you calling from today. I'm calling from san luis obispo california down the street from us. So what's going on. Where are you actually in. Moral are in moral bay okay. Well what's happening is My mom who's quite elderly adopted. And i helped her find And you can't account for her to have a companion and the cat is eight years old and her. Her elderly lady passed away and in the last couple of years this up two years ago and since then she just kinda bounced around and well she got abandoned at first she just got dumped outside by the family and then she fortunately got taken in by the cow polly kept program. And she's just she's been through a couple of homes just really through no fault her own but Her name is squeakers or that. I think it was a nickname but My my mom's really wanted to name her something nicer and i was just wondering Her at eight years old is it Is it a bad thing to rename a cat. Especially this sport. Kitty who's had so many changes. Yeah well i guess the first thing we have to realize is when we name hat and we call them. How often do they actually come to us. I so so this is maybe a little bit different than a dog in that in the response time in the turnaround that we're going to expect with calling a cat is going to be in maybe a little lower bar than we would have for a dog so but that being said i can understand that if your mom was interested in changing her name but you know. I just can't say that it's gonna be an easy thing to get the expectation that the keys going to respond and come to the name. I don't want to use the kitty or rape her anymore unsure of her situation. I don't think it would confuse her unless expectations made her upset. So if we call a cat and they don't come and we get angry or something about how. We responded them stressful than it would be stressful for her. But she's not gonna care if you call her. Buffy she doesn't come it's not going to bother her straight your mother though and that might be the thing that you know. Let's i'm may just advice to not change the rules or the name so much because it really might put your mom in more of a situation where she becomes frustrated the keys to her name responding to her name in whatever way now it can be done and if you have the means to assist your mom with this is something you can certainly do Using food as the reward to retrain her But my like. I said my expectations would be a little bit lower and i. I just don't know that. I would rather see her. Spend bonding time with her. And other ways than trying to change her name. And this is my two cents. There unlike my mom's quite my lawn ninety two and she. She kind of forgets what she wanted to collar. Anyway she had a hard time squeakers. Yeah but you know. A lot of people i mean. How many of us call a cat kitty. In do they come to us. Maybe maybe it's more of our vocal intonation shaking something that's exciting to them so that might be the things that you could look at doing. You know if your mom is struggling with that name or chooses a different when it comes more naturally for her Apparently kidding wicker's tweaker slash daisy Love to be rushed. So i justice to my lawn that maybe she you know crush her or just have some kind of enjoyable time. Sounds like she'll be a great companion for your mom and you know that is the power of human animal bond. It keeps us healthier. Keeps us going and really gives us some some sense of purpose in our lives. So thank you so much for your call. Kathy we appreciate your call in and bringing up that question. A good question of luck. We've never heard that question so that was the first time that we've heard that question here. And there's only one thing that my cat comes to and that's the key in opening you can call him anything. Hi who's this. This is richard. Hey richard how're you doing today. A great i wanted to tell you how to get rid of flea how to get rid of fleet. We've been having a lot of fleet calls.

"How abrahams and judy francis the big show today. Come tell you it is big show. We have a lady doctor impact she. Dr kathleen mccall dino. I don't think so okay. She's not a doctor. But she's an authority foremost authority on parasites. And what they can do to your brain and we're talking like taco plasmapheresis and all these other things that you can get from your animals that can really mess you up freaky out. That's on the way right here in a few minutes. Right here on animal. You wanna stick around for that. Also robert similar with five reasons deaf. Dogs rock five reasons dogs rock. He's going to be talking about the deaf dogs. i have never been. I don't know any dogs personally. But i walk a dog. You walk into dog yes. He can't hear you do a bunch are they. I is it harder than normal dogs. No you know you know what's weird Is they still react to certain things. Certain gestures hand motions. I mean for a while. Some of them i actually thought can still here. And i'm so you so you test them a little bit you realize they really can't here but it's it's it's funny how they adapt. I still talk to my dog. It's a habit. Yeah i would imagine like humans that when you lose one of your senses your other senses really become acute hands so that they can feel vibrations and really understand with their surroundings are but Robert will tell us all about that and then of course. Joey villani woody working on today. We're gonna talk about the style of grooming and you know what's out did at snood can actually put your dog. You know on the cover. That doggy vogue magazine really for real. Yes new styles. Yes absolutely no different than you know than how. I don't know you get the same hairstyle since one thousand nine hundred seventy one. Yeah i haven't actually called my hair since nineteen seventy. it's i wouldn't call it a style. It is it's out but okay so we're gonna find out the latest dog styles if that is your thing if not that's okay you're like me and you think you know the accessorising. Everything's a little goofy. But if you're like me you wanna stick around for that lori. What are you working on over there in the newsroom. I found a study. that just came out really interesting. Researchers who were looking at all of these kind of exotic hats and they thought I wonder if they really are good that so they did a study of ninety different animals. They thought would make good pets. So we've got the list of the top five best fetes and you will not hear me say dog or cat their dog or cat not on the best pet list it. yeah well. they're not in the top twenty five really well. I'm definitely areas about what tops that list stick around for that with. Lorie brooks who wrote it. I let's go to the phones for your calls for dr debbie joey villani and let's go ahead and grab jim here. Hey jim how're you doing. Where are you calling from today. Well all right almond rolling heights. Rowland heights is that the l. a. area in los angeles area. Yeah so each survey okay. So what's going on with your animals. I have the entire dream team here for you. It's kind of a weird situation. I have a seventeen year old in there or catterson indoor ever since My girlfriend and her son got oh. That's wonderful so what's going on with these guys jim. What's your problem. Well i she bumps every now. And then i don't see fleas ticks or anything and they haven't been scratching the kazoo. Oh all right. Do they have any sores on their bodies why she bumps i can feel bumps but when i look it could be but i think it's from them scratching or budding or picking on themselves all right so if we see little small bums or feel them on cats Especially if they're kind of like if you look at him closely might be a little keen little pinball and sometimes they'll have a scab on them then then that can be a condition. We call miliary dermatitis. Miliary kind of like military is kinda like what. It looks like little bumps. Miliary dermatitis can happen from awadh and different reasons and cats. The number one thing that causes. It is flea allergy dermatitis. So that's always a number one thing on my list. When i hear of katie's that have these little bumps usually around the neck the head sometimes on the chest but also along the back on there are some other causes of that as well in that might be things like a bacterial infection allergies or food allergies anything's ringworm so cats don't always have to get ringworm with like a a hair loss like a person does they can actually get these little bumps so since you do have a katy going outside. I'm going say number. One thing we need to focus on is flea control and the funny thing that i always have this conversation with folks about cats and folks will say oh. I never see fleas. Ernie evidence of fleas on my cat. And that's because in many cases cats are doing what they do best they groom and they groom themselves really well. So we can't count on seeing evidence of fleas on cast. If we're in an area that has fleas in especially with having one going outside. We really need to treat appropriately without and that might be a combination of oral products such as come boorda's along with a topical product on a regular monthly basis. So that is by far the number. One thing i'm gonna ask you to do for both cass. The other thing and if we do have fleas to realize is if you have that one cat going outside we're going to struggle. We are going to struggle hard to control fleas in any resulting skin side effects. Because of that so if we're really concerned by getting this under control we'll try to keep the outdoor cat indoor's for about a month's time so we can really do our best to try to get the flea control under our belts there but then you know this would be something if you haven't already taken the babies to the vet. You know we we'd want to do that and just make sure we don't have something like ringworm and check to see if we need to be on an antibiotic or if they do see fleas. Sometimes we'll use of a bit of a steroid just to help decrease the itch so we don't have so much self trauma as a result of the because dogs. Cats they can have Flea allergy dermatitis which means they are unreasonably itchy from the bite of the flea from the saliva. so it doesn't have to be that we have tons of fleas. It could be one flea and if you have an allergic pat they are just going crazy from that each so. That's when we'll often use like you know pregnant zone type storage just to help. Kind.

"It is animal radio. This is where we celebrate our connection with our pets and we will go back to the phones for dr. Debbie and joey villani coming up in just a couple of minutes. But first we're gonna visit with wilma melville. She is the founder of the national disaster. Search dr foundation. i believe located. I'm going to say oh hi california. Maybe that would be my guess wilma. Welcome to the show. Well thank you and we are located near ohio. These days okay. It's small town called santa paula. I'm very familiar with it. You're a retired teacher grandmother and you could have just spent your time retired but you ran into a sixteen week old black labrador. That changed your life right well. The labrador was going to be in my life no matter what. But when she and i after sima certification we were sent to the oklahoma city bombing in april nineteen ninety-five. fema certified. Well as i. I was a retired person. And i was looking for something. Active and purposeful okay to do and i had always wanted to learn to train a dog to do something special so chose disaster search thinking only california and never knowing where that decision would lead. So you got murphy certified and then where did that lead to Murphy and i became famous certified. Maybe six months before the oklahoma city bombing and because we were deployed to that bombing. It i found it to be a life changing experience. I had no idea what was going on nationally because my focus had only been california and i was thinking of it as a hobby but when i was deployed with california task force to my eyes were open to the bigger picture and our nation had approximately only fifteen fema certified dogs at that time that federal emergency management agency is the group that deploys task forces Dogs and handlers are part of that task. Force and that agency had developed twenty-eight taskforce's in the nation so i was one of them Six of us and that was our assignments. Get on the air force plane Approximately seventy two firefighters medical doctors Structural engineers and the dogs and handlers were added to that in off. We went oklahoma city. Nineteen ninety-five you said. There were fifteen. Fema dogs certified female dogs back in nineteen ninety-five. How many are there today. would you think well today. I would say approximately two hundred sixty five famous certified teams today. Though in twenty years it has grown nicely. they're still an abundantly abundant more. At least i think four hundred would be a reasonable number but we are at two fifty. And that's what's important. Are these dogs bred for this purpose. Where do you get the dogs from. Well the the search dogs out nation primarily looks in shelters for dogs. We look for. Hi dr dogs which means an active dog. A dog demanding a job. Typically the breeds are among the working group German shepherds goldens border collies labradors. Many labrador mixes Those are the kinds of dogs. That have the the group of characteristics needed but dr is primary. The dog that says. I have to have a job. I have to have a job now. The job can vary. These are the dogs that are dogs. Drug dogs sometimes even assistance dogs if if they are on the mellow and and but Dogs that need a job So you rescue them and then they rescue others. It's a whole rescue thing going on. Yes the shelters rescue the dogs. We recruit among rescue dogs. And we turn them into rescuers. The search dogs sound dacians primarily finds dogs in shelters and rescued to rescue her when you started the national disaster search dog foundation which has now grown exponentially. What was your budget. Oh well at first. There wasn't a budget at first it was scratch around and try and figure out. How do you pay the bills but It turns out that in order to be a successful nonprofit one must be just as good at asking people to join the cause. Donate as you are at your mission. The mission of the search dog foundation is to strengthen disaster response in america and in order to do that mission. We need dollars. Many many people have joined us. They've said exit. Good thing that you're you're you know we do have disasters. We have earthquakes on the west coast. We have tornados in the center of the country. We have hurricanes on the east coast. People do want to be prepared for disasters so they've pitched in and helped us build a national training center in santa paula california. We're going to take a quick break. We are with wilma melville founder of the national search dog foundation. We'll be right. Start your dog's daily dental routine with red. When you're called out to an event. Does fema pay for that. Where does the money come from when the Dogs and handlers are activated with their task. Force it depends if it's within the state then. Typically the state will pay the bill but if the state that asks for emergency help finds that too big and event to bigoted a deployment for them to handle then they ask fema to get involved so then it's largely federal money and some state money.

"Leaned radio. Ask her questions of doctrine. Debbie dogfather joey villani even ladybugs studios dog fielding calls as she usually does she so talented. Did she ever learn to talk on the phone like that. What i should take a picture of that. Let's go to danielle danielle how you doing. Good thank you but my dog knocks so good. What's up well. He is a ten month. Chihuahua terrier mix a little small dog about five pounds and every once in a while. When i hear outside she'll be eating her own poop. Sued lovely actually is one of three dog. I'm the other dogs are also there. Cocker terrier mix and the one is copper terrier mix and then also mini pincher. So we just have three dogs. They all put in the yard I'm doing what i can. But i don't want her to get poop sleep with me. Yes and you don't want in not only for the gross factor and have smell that breath but for dogs that ingest feces they have a higher rate of acquiring parasites. And you know having just digestive upset in general so it's definitely not have it. We want to you know have going on so No do they have access to go outside like through a doggie doors through the day. Or yeah i live in where there's a county sheriff for up to my bedroom isn't like a sliding off door to the backyard. So usually i. I work from home. And i took the door open. She runs in and out throughout the day and other guys are aren't doing that. Just lovely in the other parts of the house but she she right now. Okay well the bottom line is that this is actually a perfectly normal behavior. It may not be acceptable but it is normal. So dogs do this. It's kind of an instinctual thing. And if we look at how dogs are raised their their momma dog actually cleans their backside and actually stimulates them to go to the bathroom so she actually ingests their waste. So this is somewhat a Kind of a cleanup mechanism. They have and then also that just becomes kind of a wacky fun habit for some dogs. So the challenges recognizing it isn't instinct and it's going to happen if we allow it to happen through access so when big problem that i have with your current setup is that there's no supervision so she's allowed to go and do things out back out. Will you have no ability to correct her for that behavior so taking her outside to do her potty needs and she pair that with positive reinforcement praising her giving her tree and then walking back into the house that actually helps with a couple of things when you know where she's doing business and you can praise her for that you can control her so she doesn't get back into that your company that with picking up the poo in the yard so she doesn't have the opportunity again the next time you go out into snarf up her that quickly because trust me they will walk by and i've seen it happen where it's just like a vacuum cleaner in the in the pre. You know it so you really have to control of her bathroom visits and you can't leave a doggy door open or leave them unattended in the backyard. Because she's going to go right back for it. The other things that we can try to do is that we want to make sure that if you do catcher in the act. We don't discipline her. We don't yell at her. We don't chaser trying to pull the poop out of her mouth because that actually makes it more fun and becomes part of the game. Where moms now going to chase me. When i get to my poopie and so you want to have an alternative Thing you can do at that time. So i like to use the squeaky toy distraction So you're outside. You're out whether you have on her leash. Or what have you. She starts to go for the instead of yelling editor you say oh. Look at me squeaks. Quick squeaking go run in the other direction in a copy of her age. That's more fun than eating occurred. So make something else. More attractive trying to pry the turret out of her mouth and yelling at her chasing her. All of those things are very productive. So don't let yourself do that. And then Are some over the counter remedies. You can try There's deter tablets forbid powder some people just use adolph's meat tenderizer and sprinkle that on the pets food. Really and what. All of those things do yeah. I is basically msg and some enzymes and in the tenderizer but what they do is they make the dogs poop taste bad which is his. You'd think that poop tastes pat anyways but In of course they have to be ingesting their own feces. So whoever you're treating we're in their food would be who who's they're eating but that can help for some dogs but it is not the sole chair and i have a lot of people that say they use these things. But that's all they do and i it will fail if that's all you do but if you use it in conjunction with more of a training program like this then then it can help all right. I'm wondering how you think that. I do eat a lot of like people food like just little snacks like eating a cracker and i have an extra one on your back Maybe helping or that's going to be making it work. Basically i don't think it's be increasing the potential for eating her stool. But what you could be as you could definitely be creating fussy eater or developing the tendency for bagging so For that reason. I don't recommend that but i don't think it's probably increasing the the likeliness that she's gonna eater poop all right. Well thanks guys. You're been very helpful. Good luck with that. We appreciate your call today. Hey thanks for listening all right okay. Yeah so puppy. Pads are convenient. But sometimes the really gross. "We'll find out what that's all about coming up here on animal radio before we leave today. Also joey villani. The dogfather continues to get in trouble with his peers. I'm talking about his groomer friends. His groomer friends hate him because he's always coming on animal radio and telling us the tricks that groomers us and today will happen again. So get your pen and paper ready. We're gonna help you keep your dog. Groom just like the groomer's gwyn are you doing. When was the first name. And i fish. I love that name. Fish quinn okay. I bet you're thrilled. Sorry bring it up. What's going on with your animals. What's going on. how can we help you. I've talked to debby ryan every time he can. We take in having flea dipped and everything. They continually get lead lots of lease dog. Okay what kind of dog you got there akaka pluto. Okay wonderful adorable little guys. What color is he. he's right. Aw all right. so so. He's got fleas in. Are they treating them when you get him groomed. Do you treat them at home with anything with nine. Yes okay and we even had a dog collar on it and it's not doing any good all right. What part of the country you calling from. I'm calling from los angeles california. Okay all right. So yeah you guys certainly got. I'm in Normally i practicing las vegas so in california you guys. You guys have all sorts of fun with fleas. That we don't get to have here in las vegas. We're very dry climate. So they don't really thrive very well but certainly in california the moisture Definitely the it's a haven for fleas. And you know that trick with fleas. Is that one. Product doesn't always do the trick alone and in many areas. The reinfestation of lease is huge. So you could treat the pet and everything on the pet can be killed but if going back into the environment where the fleas are which is very common in areas like california there's fleas outside It isn't uncommon for them to get reinvested. Always kind of have to look at that as possible reality and make sure that we're doing everything we can not just on the pet but even in the home or even in the yard to treat. It's kind of what we call integrated flea control so we're gonna treat more than just one method if one product doesn't do a very good you know what there's a lot of other good ones out there and in fact Advantage and advantix. The that's kind of a whole line of different Flea products they have some very good Products that can be helpful and some pets. It might work better for your pet and I definitely endorse a product. That has A combination of different ways that we can attack these critters. So there's little eggs there's little larva and the adult so if like find a product or products that tackles more than one. Life's cycle of this then. We're doing really good so you might want to look at Perhaps looking at advantage to Or advantix tim. Those might be some of the ones you want to look to. But i would stay faithful. I mean you gotta stay on top of fleas. They reproduce like crazy so one little flea can certainly add to mini generations beyond so One bite and one fleet can leave europe. Head-scratching leave you renan in circles after these guys right advantage you would suggest that i could Baby man of for their product or did anything that i'm not doing right because we constantly and he was gretchen. So bad to me scratching. I just take it into the bed. Came home two days. And he was scratching like he was eight scratching. Nick was bleeding. Oh well yeah in. In sometimes we do actually prescribe anti-itch products if if they're digging themselves up so badly because part of that is comfort and we want to stop that each cycle while we're killing these critters so If the vet hasn't already done something to help Some dogs. I'll add a little bit of prednisone just kind of help curb that a really intense each But a lot of it is. I think we might want to look at the environment and making sure that we're treating the yard treating the homeless really yard Is far as it's i personally prefer using a professional Getting a exterminator to treat the yard appropriately That would be one big thing now. Some simple things around inside the is that If you're using flee Callers a lot of times we have to address the vacuum. Because when you suck up those little flea eggs he can live and grow and reproduce inside the vacuum bag. So you wanna make sure that you're in. You're taking the house clean the filter. Yes so you wanna make sure you empty your vacuum whatever kind of vacuum you got in in the kind that you have if you have an actual bag in many cases will put a little bit of a Flea or tick collar. I'll put that actually in the bag to help. Kind of kill them as they're kind of coming around so that would be definitely one big thing and you know sometimes. There's a lot of debate about this in the vet world whether or not we have drug resistant flees out there And there are some veterinary researchers that say you know in some areas of the country. These critters are getting stronger. And that's one reason may be kind of mixing it up and trying alternate products for you One other thoughts that also is a bit controversial. Is that It's sometimes that win folks purchase flea and tick products from alternate sources. There's some concern about whether it's really that same product that you would get at your veterinary office and there are believe it or not. Instances of counterfeit fleeing check products out. There that are sold through catalogs and so forth from the store. Okay so if you're getting it from your veterinarian those are guaranteed and that's certainly much different than if you're buying it on the internet or getting shipping new walmart he's at the pet shop Okay all right still might be room for maybe talking to your veterinarian and see what they have on their shelf and what they might recommend because if these products are coming through these outside channels non veterinary channels. There can be the potential that they're coming from other sources so it was just something to consider walmart right but they're not a veterinary office and and they don't have a veterinary license to buy these products from the source. So that that's certainly the concern with some of these things. Okay yeah but i think some of those are some of the things you can do to tackle things and You stay vigilant really. Keep up the hard work And make sure. Would you treat the environment along with the pet and if you have any other pets that are in the home. Make sure they're being treated concurrently because cats dogs past these things around rabbits ferrets. So we've got to treat all the little critters otherwise you're going to just keep having problems there so my best wishes to you. I hope the itch scratch stops and you make me really happy. I live in a dry climate. So i don't have those fleas so having great one claw gwen. We appreciate it. It'll carry joy turner. Can you communicate to fleas. Could you could you ask them to evacuate go away. I have actually tried this. The way i have found it to work for me is interesting. Anyone could do this. I actually told them if they continued to come and mess with my kids. I was going to actually try to do something to get rid of them. Which for me. I use borax twenty milton borax on my markets and that pretty much keeps the fleas away. I am not infested here in washington..

Holy moly a couple of years. But she's not fat she's just A big cat. Gator shadows wow exercise and everything. But she's just a big test. I took her in and When i first got her new said she's not a fat cat. she's just a big cat. This is the way some of them are. Sometimes you know a little When i first got her they some something on her. I can't even remember what it was and that it did work. It was very greasy and it just were self off and it didn't really work. I was wondering if there's something. I can use on her colt that might help it. Okay perhaps now. There's a couple of things. I wanna ask you. Does she seems itchy scratchy. She have hair loss in any of the areas on her body. She doesn't scott says she doesn't have any hair loss and i've kind of pulled up her and check check. She doesn't have any dry. Spots are dry under there. It's weird to sing. It's kinda like a flaky When i brush her. And i'd take the air off the brush. You can see a little spot of hair She's an indoor cat. And i'm wondering if maybe it's just a dry skin that she's got well. The first thing is when you tell me that you have a siamese that's eighteen pounds. My bs radar is going on and she's in good weight because there are not many. Siamese which are fine boned lean cast is generally. What the breeds hype is so i would just partial. I think maybe half. Siamese yeah well we do see especially in the hindquarter area right over the rump. We do see a problem where overweight cats will commonly get dry skin in that area. And they'll have a lot of flaky nece in part of it is because they're a little bit to round. I'm kind of like a weeble. They can't turn around. And groom that spot very well so that can definitely play one factor in things but when we look at what are all the causes of what makes a cat. We have flaky skin. Well we look at things like parasites so perhaps your veterinarian did treat with a topical parasite product. That'd be one of the simplest things that i would always start with us to make sure we're doing really good flea control because there's also other types of parasites you can't see like might that can cause Flaky nece as well as itching and so forth. So making sure that you've had your cat she's an indoor cat all the time understand. Yeah but they're still. I feel give her the three things Later that he's not An aggressive cat in any way but.

"It is animal radio and if you're one of those people that just doesn't do facebook or instagram joined the club either. One of the few people. I think were i think. There's like ten or a dozen of us in the in the whole world that don't do this what i actually do. I leave this to judy. Judy she will scan through all of the videos. All of the pictures all the viral viral on social especially the cat videos. That's my favorite and this next guest caused by attention. We welcome to the show activist and glamour magazine woman of the year from two thousand twelve and the guardian of the late viral sensation bailey. Not the ordinary cat. This is a very unique cat. Welcome to the show erin moran so let's talk a little bit about bailey and bailey is definitely not an ordinary cat. Bailey loved by the way bailey has passed. I'll just point that out right now. At fourteen years old lived a nice long life but yes bailey used to take bubble baths and actually enjoy these bubble baths and yes that is correct and he would often sit in a chair and be read two hours while getting a pedicure catholic cure and didn't mind actually enjoy this and you were able to photograph this. Oh yes everything. From being pushed in a buggy to dress stuff in baby sitting in a highchair and being said ammo you know cat food. He would allow my daughters to do anything to him. Well now that's interesting because my cat barely loves me to pet it. What do you think may be different. And i knew he was unique. Sweet cat the minute. I met him just by his manners. In how affectionate he was and how he choose like. Let you do anything to them. Because i have two cats back home. When i found bailey and so i fell in love with them so quickly and knew he was snow ordinary cat that i actually hit him in my college. Catherine allowed the dorms. And i hit him Because i could not walk out of that store Without without him you've found him at a pet store. I on in a pet store in my college town. A little dinky town had this little pet store net cats and poppies and i. You could play with the kittens. And i found of indicate with those little female sibling. Pull them out. And i just i. I couldn't leave after three hours. I walked out with them. The relationship between bailey. Your daughter is amazing. It is truly incredible. People cannot believe some of the things that captured on camera. I mean he looked he would let her lay on them in and she'd sit there and like you know pulling his years and stuff and he just per away like i think that this little girl my little abby would do to bailey people watching go. You know what. What cat allows this. And i had a videotape it because they just took a picture. People think oh. He ran out of the bathtub in two seconds after he was being held or forced down. But when you watch videos you see that the cat sit there in the bathtub. Willie squirted all the bubble. You know so pondimin scrutton with the loofah. No he died share with a big on his shoulder on a on a. And it's just i had to capture the video to show people. Oh yeah. He's sitting on their little motorized pete car going down the driveway And just sits in the back. Well my little. Hannah and abby drive off do you think it just like the attention. Yes and that. I can tell you is why he would do anything. He was obsessed with attention. He you look at pictures. He's gotta be touching the human he's constantly got upon you and he follows you if everyone gets up and leaves the room. He follows you into the next room. He follows them to bedtime up in their bag. When i when i leave and go into the office he tells me that the office i mean everywhere you go and if you close the door and he doesn't have access to human. He will sit there and scratchy theodore until you let them in well. Even though he's crossed the rainbow bridge he still lives on and within a book and i assume still online yes He one hundred fifty four thousand instagram followers on bailing ordinary cat. I've got so many videos of them. I just continue to share on because people are constantly telling me you know. It's the highlight of their day. So you know the video picture. And so i've got fourteen years of great footage that i just continue to share with people. Tell me about the book. So the book is It captures who bailey is. It's a picture book with words on the next page of captions. So there'd be a picture of for example Baby wrapped up in a blanket. All around his head and he'll unaccounted like we. Stop laughing at me and unwrap me. Human the bathtub with the girl. They've got their little. Kitty cat swimsuits down and heating the bath talk and they're not looking at the camera but he is and you know. The quota of one of somebody told cafe water. There's the cat is talking out the book. So what do you. What do you think all the other normal cats thought of him. Oh they're probably like who is this crazy kept. He's i think there's a little humid gonna cost you that. There's really not a cat mayor. I'm looking through the book now. It looks like it would make a great gift and in fact. "Is the place where we celebrate our pets. We make sure they're healthy and happy, and hopefully you have either Penn insurance or put money away just in case something catastrophic happens to your animals. You never want to be put in the situation where you have to decide whether or not to euthanize them because you're short few thousand dollars. And today we're gonna find out this brand new alternative to pet insurance. And this doc, I believe he's a physician surgeon a human doctor. Human doctor is he has a brand new digital or online company that is an alternative to pep insurance. We'll find out what that's all about. Coming up here on animal radio before we leave today. Also, Joey Villani. The dogfather continues to get in trouble with his peers. I'm talking about, yes, his groomer friends, his groomer friends hate him because he's always coming on animal. Radio and telling us the tricks that groomers us and today we'll happen again. So get your pen and paper ready. We're going to help you keep your dog groom just like the groomers, hey, Gwen, are you doing? Glen was the first name? I fish. I love that name. My fish Quinn. Okay, thrilled. Sorry. What's going on with your animals? What's going on, how can we help you? I've talked to Debby Ryan. Every time we take having feed dipped in everything they continually gets lead lots of lead dog. Yes. Okay. What kind of dog you got there? Kaka poodle. Okay, wonderful. Gerbil little guys. What color is he? He's right. All right, so so he's got fleas in, are they treating them when you get him groomed? Do you treat them at home with anything with nine? Yes. Okay. And we had a dog collar on him and it's not doing any. Good. All right. What part of the country do you calling from? I'm calling from Los Angeles, California. Okay. All right. So, yeah, you certainly are you. I'm in normally practicing Las Vegas. So in California, you guys have all sorts of fun with fleas that we don't get to have here in Las Vegas. We have a very dry climate so they don't really thrive very well, but certainly in California, the moisture definitely it's a haven for fleas and you know that trick with fleas is that one product doesn't always do the trick alone. And in many areas, the reinfestation of fleas is huge. So you could treat the pet and everything on the pet can be killed. But. If going back into the environment where the fleas are, which is very common in areas like California, there's flees outside, it isn't uncommon for them to get reinvested. So we always kind of have to look at that as a possible reality and make sure that we're doing everything we can not just on the pet, but even in the home or even in the yard to treat, it's kind of what we call integrated flea control. So we Don a treat more than just one method. And if one product doesn't do your very good, you know there's a lot of other good ones out there, and in fact, advantage and Advantix they that's kind of a whole line of different flea products. They have some very good products that can be helpful in some pets. It might work better for your pet. And I definitely endorse a product that has a combination of different ways that we can attack these critters. So there's a little eggs. There's little larva and then there's the adult. So if I find a product or products that tackles. More than one life cycle of this. Then then we're doing really good so you you might want to look at perhaps looking at advantage to or Advantix Tim. Those might be some of the ones you want to look to. I'm but I would stay faithful. I mean, you gotta stay on top of fleas. They reproduce like crazy. So one little flea can certainly add many, many generations beyond. So one bite and one fleet can leave your pet scratch in leave. You running in circles after these guys.
