"It's animal radio. And for those familiar with animal radio, know that this can only mean one thing. The dog father Joey velani is gracing our presence. How are you doing? Hold on, let me kiss your ring. There. Look, give me a paper towel. Paper towel, you need a pot bulldog. Yeah. Sorry about that. Okay. So you know I got a really good question for me. Listen, I think it says millville Pennsylvania. But what she's asking, she said, skunks are definitely a big problem in her area, but not as bad as she apparently believes on a 150 acres in Pennsylvania. And so she has two Burmese mountain dog mixes. But anyway, the problem is they're rolling around in carcasses. Anything that they find dead, they want to get that smell on them. And you know what with dogs, that's what they do. Unfortunately, when you have a dog that's probably over a 150 pounds and has as much coat that'll take some summer to drive, unless you have the proper equipment. It's a hard process as far as bathing going. It goes and she's made that very clear to me that what else can we do here? Well, organic odors are actually pretty easy. Even though they probably smell worse than anything else. Skunks, but it really skunks are easy. Skunks are yeah, you know what it's not. Unless the whole thing is the process is a little bit of a pain and neck. You have to follow it to a T, but it's not hard. It's not hard. But any organic or to really, I mean, you can get rid of it quickly. Now, this is just for that dead caucus smell. This isn't the skunks that will work, but it's not going to work as good as some of my other remedies for skunk. What are you going to do? It's real easy. How's laughing already? It's specific for the dead carcass smell. Well, it is. And it makes it so get yourself a gown, get yourself a gallon of water. Okay. Okay, I don't care if it's tap water. I don't care what kind of water use. If you could use distilled water, it's always best. But get yourself a gallon of water. And you're going to add a quarter of a cup of anti bacterial dish detergent, okay? And I'm going to explain why in a second, and then you're going to add a cup of white vinegar. Is that like John when you say anti dawn, but antibacterial. That that's the important thing. The reason why we say anti bacterial is number one, if the dogs are rolling around and other dead animals, who knows what kind of bacteria they're picking up and you don't want to spread it. So this is going to actually help kill that. The white vinegar is going to destroy the odor almost completely. You're going to spray it on your dog and get it on pretty good. I mean, a little bit less than saturating but more than just damp. Working in with a brush and then towel it off. Now, if it feels a little bit soapy, it's okay. It's biodegradable. It's not going to hurt your pet, especially for the amount of times that you're going to use. If I did this every single day, I'd be a little bit worried. If your dogs are rolling it at every day, well, you know what, you got a problem, go out and clean up your go out and clean up your property a little bit. What other radio show will help you get rid of that carcass smell. Well, let me answer. Before you meet for you, make a big joke out of it because you live here in California. Yes. Did you ever experience that? No. Well, ladybug does, she rose her little neck and maybe like a dead snail in the street or something like that. That is about as bad as it gets. And it's just a little bit. I don't let her get her full body. So I can just kind of wipe off her neck. With squirrels and birds. And they would come in and it stinks. It's a putrid smell. As I'm talking about the suburbs of Manhattan now, so this happens quite often. Well, we have a lot of Birds of Prey around here, I guess, and there's not a lot of dead carcasses that last very long for the dogs. There is a lot of New York. A lot of dead carcasses in New York. Yeah, they are. Thank you so much, joyful, and ladies and gentlemen, shall we? Do I, can I kiss your ring just one more time? I mean, I think we go ahead. Go ahead. There you go. Tastes. Okay, I got the cleanup. Don't worry about it. Yeah, that was jam packed. You jam packed it. You couldn't get any more in that show there. Thank you so much for the wonderful job you did. And for Marlon hargis, thanks for coming on Lindsey politic and all of you for calling in and asking your question. "Three 806 8 9 O one four three. That's 806 8 9 zero one 43. Celebrating the connection with our pets. This is animal radio, featuring veterinarian doctor Debbie white, groomer Joey velani, news director Laurie Brooks, and now here are your hosts Hal Abrams and Judy Francis. An incredible hour this hour we will talk to the dog. Boomer the dog, boomer the dog. Boomer, boomer. The guy who believes she's a dog, or maybe believe, or wants to be a dog, I really don't know, we'll find out this hour, so you stick around, you'll be enlightened just as much as I will. Also, we'll be talking to Miranda Perry, she works with scam book and she'll tell us about the online pet scams going on. Let's head on over to, I guess I got to press this button here. Hey Rick, how are you doing? Good. How are you doing? What's going on in your world? What kind of pet problems and dog problems do you have? I have a 6 year old boxer, this started about a year ago, we have four other dogs, she helped raise its a pit in American bulldog mix. They were best friends, played together everything together. Just out of the blue, like a light switch went off in my boxer's head. She starts attacking this pit every time she sees it. Okay, which dog is she attacking? And one of the ones in your house, so one of the ones outside your house. One of the ones in the house, the one that she helped raise actually from a puppy. And how old is the dog she attacks right now? How old is this though? Roughly a year and a half. Are all these dogs fixed? No. Okay. Well, you got a major problem right there. That's a major problem right there. None of them fixed or a couple of them fixed. No, no, none of them are. Well, that's a major problem, my friend. And you're going to have a whole bunch of problems because you've got four dogs. The dog that's being attacked is just now becoming an adult. And when dogs become adults, they their personalities change. They try to assert themselves. What the boxers doing because you're not in charge is telling this dog, I'm in charge. I'm your boss. Pretty much being aggressive to let him know that that's the case. That's his place in this pack order. It gets worse when you don't fix dogs because they've got all those hormones flowing through them. And you're setting up a recipe for disaster because you tell me you have four dogs. Now I'll tell you this is very important for you to understand this. When you have more than one or two dogs, you have to be an extremely capable and you have to be an extremely powerful leader. Because if you're not, those dogs can become very dangerous to you and your family, once aggression rears its head, there's no stopping it. It gets worse and worse to the point where you think, oh, this dog loves me. No, it doesn't work like that. Once the dog snaps over into the aggressive frame of mind, they're insane. They fight to the death. They don't even know it's you they're biting. They get lunatic. You can't stop it. Unless you know what to do. So the first thing you need to do, if you really care about these dogs and you're going to be responsible is they need to all be fixed. They need to all be fixed, buddy. The second thing rides with me in my truck now, because I don't want to don't want them fighting. Okay, wait, I just want to ask you a question. Are you listening to me? 'cause I don't need to know that your box is riding in your truck or he goes to parties with you. I understand what's going on. I need you to, I need you to understand what's going on. Okay, yeah. I understand I need to do that, but the second part of the problem was she'll, when I have her out, she will let people pet her love on her and I can just tell from looking at her from the back when she's getting ready to snap. Somebody be petting on her she'll be loving on them and just all of a sudden bite. It's not all of a sudden. And let me ask you now, see, this is what you need to understand. When you see that she's getting ready to go off, what do you do? What are you doing? At that time, that's when I pull I grab her and pull her back. You grab her and pull her back. Okay. So you allow her to approach people, and then as soon as she starts to get aggressive, you notice she's getting aggressive. You pull her back. Yeah, that's when I control over. And what do you feel inside while this is going on? Me myself, I don't want her to do it. But how do you consider to be a dice dog? I know you don't want her to do it. But how do you feel? How do you feel? Well, I don't like the idea of having the puller back. I mean, it makes me feel bad that I have to do that. Okay, so you feel bad. Do you also feel nervous and anxious? No, no, I have food control of my dog at all times. You think you do. But if you have full control of your dog at all times, your dog wouldn't be aggressive. Again, she needs to be fixed, but still in all, if you have control of your dog, like you think you do, she would never get aggressive around other people. Okay. So you really don't have control. I know I have to get her fixed other than have the life expect. All right, the first thing you need to do, you get her fixed. The second thing you need to do is take control of everything. Every aspect of her life. In other words, she doesn't approach people without permission. You walk her every day, 20, 30 minutes on a leash, at your side, you walk her when you feed her, you hold the food in front of her for a good minute on the clock. You just stare ahead, no talking to her, put the food down, make her wait a minute before she's allowed to eat it. You take control of her toys. You get in your truck first, you exit your truck first. You enter your house first, you exit your house first. Pretty much everything that she does is because you're allowing her to do it. And when do you allow her to do it when she's totally calm? So my dog. I've got a 125 pound dog. He is extremely powerful. He would run all over me if I would let him. So everything he does, and everything I allow him to do, he has to be in a totally calm state of mind as long as it takes for him to do it. So his most excited time is when I'm going to walk him. You know, I play with him and I have the kids play with them and he sees that leash and he knows I'm going for a walk. He loses his mind. In my mind, he loses his mind and your mind he'd be like, wow, he doesn't look excited at all. So what do I do? I stand there with the leash and say nothing. Sometimes for a good two minutes on the clock until he lays down and is motionless. Then I tell him, good boy. And I motion for him to sit. I put the leash on him, gets a little bit juiced, a little bit more energy coming out of him, and I just stand there. I don't move. I wait for him to calm down again. Totally calm, and then I say good boy heal. And then we take our walk. Everything is a process towards calm, submissive, relaxed behavior. Everything. Everything. Okay. I'll definitely start doing that because like you said, I feel like I have control over her, but like you said, with the food, things like that, I don't. I've never done that. And so I will start doing that and see if I can make some

It's attracted a whole lot of what you would call not the academic types, but the angry sexist rednecks yelling at each other in the Woods, which has been proven with ducks. That show, big hit. That's pretty much the same thing. What better way to attract the notoriously camera shine probably mythical creature than a bunch of people out in the Woods arguing. Now, dean Cain will be hosting that, by the way. Beautiful, his career has taken a turn for the better. And it offers the biggest cash prize in TV history. Pretty good. How much is the cash per $1 million? You know what's funny? It's funny. You're giving $10 million to a bunch of guys. None of which can count up to two. I think the price should equal the amount of teeth that the person who finds Bigfoot has. If you've got two teeth, you get 2 million. Well, lloyds isn't worried about it. They're not going to lose much sleep over it. They say, whoever wins this is they've got to have definitive visual and DNA proof of Bigfoot. So sorry. Can't fake it there. "Today's really funny story. Innocent bystander? I didn't know dogs could drive. It's the Wayne West Virginia Walmart and employees on a break when a car starts inching towards her. Instead of screaming and running the other way like I would have, she assumed the driver maybe was messing with her until she saw a dog behind the wheel. What do you think thoughtful innocent bystander? Dogs can be your best friend. But your enemy too. The car crashed into the front of the Walmart, another dog in the passenger seat pushed the car window down to say hi. The owner left her car running. So her dogs could stay cool while she was shopping. The dog knocked the car out of park. Innocent bystander, what's the first thing you'd think of a car was coming at you being driven by a dog? I would laugh for sure, then I'd be like, oh wow, dogs can drive. Am I the only one who would run away? This is. Animal radio, baby. Happy holy days from your Friends at 5 O friendly magazine. It's toll free for doctor Debbie, dog trainer Alan cable, or dog father Joey velani. I gotta tell you something. I was in took home a Washington this weekend doing a judging a grooming show. And now these shows, what they're doing is, is the groomers are grooming rescue dogs. It's called a rescue makeover and they get a rescue in the area, and they bring all these dogs in, some of them, some of three legs with the roll looking for homes. And the cool thing is, is when they come in and they're all scared and they're biting and they're pooping in their pee. And before the end of the competition, because they draw an audience, like you have a few hundred people, they share in for them. And then they all got their chests out. And they're looking out over the audience and their calm and it's like, yeah, it's me, it's me, you know. And it's really cool how you can actually see that, you know what? It's like their day. They don't show Queen for a day. Yeah. Being panther. Exactly. You know what? A lot of them get adopted too, which is which is a good thing, you know? That's great. How many did you bring home? You know what? I have too many at home, I can't. I can't. The four dogs and the bird is enough. I bet. I want to bring them to the rescue Mako and just make, you know, make believe, maybe they'll get adopted. Yeah, your wife's not listening. No, I know. I know, forget about it. How about you, Tammy? What do you got going on? Well, think about this. You're in court facing serious charges, and the witness for the prosecution is a dog. Wait, wait, I gotta get a stinger for that. It's a dog. Perfect. See, that made a lot more dramatic. It did. Hi, Jackie. Hi. How are you? I'm good. How are you? Good, where are you? Right now I'm in seligman, Arizona. You must be a driver. I am. You are on with doctor Debbie. Hi, I have a little boy yorkie. He's two and a half years old. And when we were home last month, he ended up in the hospital for gastroenteritis and they had him on IVs because he was getting dehydrated. Now his mood and everything was great, but he was vomiting. By looking at the pink around his eye, things discovered that and with the blood work that he was dehydrated. So he stayed for a day and a half, and he's still not quite up to par. I mean, he's not, he's on prescription ID diet. And when he isn't eating, I'm allowed to give him canned chicken and chicken broth. But sometimes he still just gets in a funk where he does a, you know, he's just kind of sad or depressed. He's not getting people food at all anymore. Okay. Was he getting people food before? He watched. All right, and did they when he was hospitalized, did they do any laboratory test x-rays? Did they find anything significant if they did? Well, the blood was very thick and they said that he was in the beginning of kidney failure because of the dehydration thickening the blood. Does that sound right? Yeah, yeah. Okay. Oh, I just want to say anything about fats or any kind of high fats in his blood. Oh no, I don't remember that. Okay. He's supposed to be on a low fat diet, no more fat, no more people food. We were told we were allowed to give him a little bits of bread because he really likes his carbs. And he's not napkins dog then, huh? Like his mom. But he, I gave him probably four tiny little pinches off of the bun yesterday, and he's put up that night. I don't know, okay. So we're really not out of this first vow of gastroenteritis. Has he had other GI problems prior to that? No, I mean, he's vomited here and there, but nothing that scared me like it did when I took him in. Okay. Well, I just get the feeling that maybe we haven't quite gotten to the bottom of his problem. Because gastroenteritis is a big broad term inside of that category. There's oodles of things that can cause gastroenteritis from things that we feed, whether they're too rich and they just cause some stomach unrest. To viruses, bacteria, even structural problems, and I've had some small dogs that can have problems with the outflow of their stomach being kind of compressed. Whether that's from something stuck in there like a toy or an item, or if there's just an anatomic, narrowing in the stomach. So there can be some weird things there. And my gut feeling here, no joke there. Isn't that I think we need to maybe revisit this issue and see a little bit more because if this was just a plain old acute gastritis, I think we'd be done in over with by now. And especially since you said that he had some borderline on kidney failure, that to me also brings up some concerns with a disease called Addison's disease. Which can cause a lot of frequent vomiting, diarrhea about sometimes which aren't always that serious. But can also present where the pet has test results that look like they might be having kidney damage. So that might be something and I think that if you have this ongoing problem, I would address that with your veterinarian and one of the things they might do is to do some follow-up blood work and maybe even check for something like that disease. Okay. And I guess the other thing that I wouldn't want to miss anything and maybe they've already done it is to make sure that we have done some thorough fecal testing for parasites. They did good.

"You? I don't make coffee. I don't drink coffee. I don't make it. I don't know how to make it 'cause I don't drink it, so I don't know what's good about it. No, whoever made the coffee this morning good stuff. Put in here on my chest. Ladies and gentlemen, we all bow right now for the dog father Joey velani. You know what's funny? Is this week I got a few people emailed me for the same issue and I've had two people that actually were asking me about a good ear cleaner. I know I spoken about her before, but I'm gonna reiterate a few things. A good general ear cleanser. There's a few variables you got to take into consideration first. Are you using it just for general cleaning? Are you trying to clean something up? Like an infection or ear mites or something like that. And that's the first thing that you have to determine. If you don't know if the pet has an ear infection, the easiest way to tell is smell it. If it smells funny whatsoever, shouldn't smell like anything. Which is my good dog. But if it smells yeasty, if it smells sour or if there's any sort of discharge that looks not normal, like black discharge or even like mucus C the first thing I would do at that point, just take it to a veterinarian and have a professionally looked at, not you grow them with your veterinarian because it could be something a little bit more serious. Groom is basically what they'll do is just do a general cleaning of just earwax in the brain. If you do that on a regular basis, you should really not have too many problems with your pet CEOs. Now, some pets and some breeds normally just have chronic ear problems like cocker spaniels and a lot of the setters and the spaniels because of the way their ears are. They have long, thick ear flaps that come over most of them. And what it does, it doesn't let the air get in there and dry things out. So if it gets a little bit moist, it's a little bit easier for it to grow any sort of bacteria or yeast or something like that. Anyway, it's getting away from that. Now, we determined everything looks good. This is the first thing you're going to do. If a dog has hair in its ear and abundance, you want to take it out. Now it might not be something you want to do at home. How do you do that? You just cut it out? No, basically you just pull it out. It's has a short root base, and groom is what they'll do is they'll put a powder in that just gives it a little bit better grip and pull it. It don't hurt that much. How do you know? Wait, when I pull hair out of my gym. When you pull your own, well right now, the grooming world is being turned upside down. And the veterinarian world too, because some people say pluck, some people say don't what I say is leaving alone because of it's fine to begin with why mess with it. There's a couple of different types of home remedies that you can use as a good ear cleaner. First thing you can use is a little witch hazel, which hazel works good, but my favorite is on white vinegar 50% and 50%. And I like using distilled water, I mean they say you can use tap water, but I like to still water because you know what? You know there's nothing in it. And anything you have to worry about. Mix a little bit of that. Put a little bit on a cotton ball and go in there and swab it out and just go down as far as you can see. You don't want to go deep. Now what I will not do is that we're not doing ear flushing. If I'm going to do any air flush, I make sure I get the proper the proper solution from a veterinarian and I followed up the dosage. So this is just for general ear cleaning. But if you do that, if your dog has healthy ears to begin with and you do that, once twice a month, really, you don't need to do it any more than at unless your dog has some sort of chronic problem and it needs to be done. But other than that, I would just go in with that. And the one thing you want to do is when you don't want the solution to throw it away, it's not something you want to keep around the house. It's cheap enough to make it. If you do that, you'll have a nice, healthy, happy dog. That can hear you. Good advice. Keep those ears clean. Ladies and gentlemen, Joey Melania on animal radio. No potatoes. Potatoes in your room. All right. Get potatoes growing in your ears. Yeah, I don't know if that was an old tie in. Mother's thing. I don't know, my mother wasn't Italian, I don't know. I grew up on the east coast, maybe it was an east coast thing. Other Q tips for dogs. Oh, there's a good idea. I don't think you can. You know what? Put those in the kitchen. I like staying away from it. Only because you know what I've seen too many, I've seen too many people use Q tips in their dog's ears and I have to go to the veterinarian because the dog shook its head or turned in a large in the ear and approval. And believe it or not, we, we had a dog once that came into the salon and we were cleaning it to you and we noticed something in there. We went in with a hemostat and we pulled out a half of a Q tip. And the people said, oh, that must have been in there for a while because we haven't used Q tips in the talk of the year about 6 months. Hi, it's Alan cable. How much do you love your pet? A couple in Texas is trying to sell their homes so they can offer a $50,000 reward for their dog. Me and my wife, we've never had any children, and I guess maybe that dog replacement for a child that we had for 5 years. And I got all those memories, but we just want some more. You know, they're great. That man's name is Charlie Parker. We just want another day. Another week, another month, another year. One thing's for sure. We all need to love and we all need to be loved back. And there's nothing more powerful. So besides giving a dog a home, what's the greatest gift you can give? Well, being a great dog owner. It means understanding and satisfying your dog's needs, learning to communicate with your dog. Dogs need these four things. Socialization, structure, exercise, and affection. You're gonna have to learn to communicate like a dog. And that's done with body language, not with words. Last week we were talking about the most common dog behavioral problems. We covered barking and chewing. Let's talk about separation anxiety. If a dog has separation anxiety, he might get very anxious right before you leave. He's going to want to follow you around constantly touch you whenever he can. And when you leave a lot of things can happen. You might start chewing up your couch, going to the bathroom all over the place. Barking to change this behavior, modify it and desensitize your dog. First requires you to become a calm, confident, trustworthy, consistent leader. When your dog looks to you for leadership and can depend on you, the anxiety level naturally is reduced. Then you can start to teach them that, yes, you're leaving, but you're definitely coming back. In the dog world, the leader of the pack is the only one who's allowed to leave without permission. So if you're not in charge, when you leave, your dog gets all anxious because you're leaving without permission. You can begin by locking your dog in a crate and paying no attention to him for about ten, 15 minutes. Then just leave. Come back in about a half hour. Pay no attention to your dog for ten, 15 minutes, and then let him out of the kennel. Don't talk to him though. And then over time, lengthen the amount of time you stay away. Your dog will learn that you're in charge, you're leaving and you're coming back. And because you're not making a big deal out of leaving and coming back, your dog will learn to become while you're doing it. "Damn, two hair in my coffee. That's typical for here, Hal. I know. It's like, if you don't have hair in your food, or your coffee, but you're not an animal lover, period. Hi, Angela. How are you? Hey, fine. How are you? Good, I understand you want to talk to Joey velani. Yes, sir. What's going on? Well, I've got a chat who just loves to be groomed to the point that when I'm not on my mother's taking care of her, you know, the cat meets her at the door runs up on this to the kitchen channel and jumps up there. My mother gives her a can of food and she may or may not eat the food before she runs through the back door into the garage and jumps up on the grooming table to wake some of my mother to brusher. And explaining all this because this is not a cat that doesn't like to be glued. The problem I'm having is the table is a plastic patio table and share. I used like a rubber curry for us like really for a horse. I got a couple of those because they really get the undercut out really great and have flies, but the problem is the chat is getting little shocks that I don't know about. So static electricity and if I don't notice the tail switch or the little kitty evil eye, she thinks I'm intentionally doing it and she will actually, you know, if I don't catch her little shape, she'll fight me. Is there any way to cut down the static electricity while she's being brushed? Because she'll sit there and love you to brush her for 20 or 30 minutes. Now, I got a question for you. It's a shorthand Canada. Obviously. The table that you're using, you say, has a plastic top? It's a plastic solid plastic table on a concrete floor. I think that you get in the static off of the plastic off the table, but you know what, instead of changing all that, I got a very, very simple solution. You know, dryer sheets, bounce, dryer sheets. What you're gonna do is you're gonna take one of them before you groom your pet. And you're gonna rub the cat down with the dryer sheet. And what that's gonna do, it's gonna eliminate the static. So you're gonna be able to brush and calm your cat with no problems. It's a trick that we actually use in dog shows in certain times of the year. When it's a little dryer out, you'll get more static, so what will happen is you'll get a lot more flyaway hair. And we do that as well. And absolutely will take care of the static. Your cat won't be upset. You'll be happy and it actually makes them smell good. Okay, great. Well, bounce any type of dryer dryer sheets that you get the ones to sheets that you throw in a dryer. Just put the brand in. Should I rub the tape plastic table with it too, or just a cat? I would just rub the cat. I mean, it couldn't hurt. I mean, I've never rubbed down the tail before, so I honestly don't know, but I know if you do, if you do rub the cat with it, it will absolutely positively eliminate the static. Oh, thank you. You've made both me and my cat very happy. Good. Thank you. That's why I'm here to make you guys happy. Thanks for your call today. Let us know how that works. "In for doctor Debbie today Doc halligan, this is the second week for doctor Debbie's vacation in Hawaii. It's a long vacation, but she works so hard and definitely deserves it. Bucky, her. Alan cable dog trainer right here, as well as dog father Joey velani, animal communicator, Joey connecting on Skype with us. And then, of course, Wendy diamond. How you doing Wendy? Can I touch you? You touched so many amazing people. You were hanging with sting yesterday. Is that correct? Oh my gosh. I was so fortunate to have dinner with sting and trudy. By the way, by the way. I know we all know, I know we all know sting, right? Sure. But his wife trudy is seriously one of the most impressive women I've ever, ever known in my life. I mean, it was the cutest thing because sting like literally did not speak at all. It was all trudy. When he finally, you know, it was a small event at the Harvard club. It was a 150 people. Trudy styler has done so much for the rainforest foundation that sting and trudy's charity that they started at 19. Ready for this? 1989. Wow. They've been doing it before it made it cool. Is it true what I read about sting about the tantric dog petting that he can pet a dog for 12 hours without stopping? Well, you know, listen, I don't like to go into those things in public about any personal lives of anybody with their dogs because I've heard a little too much in my life. And also by the way, I saw Tony Bennett this week. Oh, I love Tony bell. That guy just keeps on ticking ticking and ticking. Can I still sound and you were of course with baby hope? I'm sure she was tucked away in your bag there. Baby hope. Yeah, baby hope was at the first time fest, but I did not bring her to the Harvard club because we all know that they're a little stuffy in there. Wendy, you're interesting. I probably could have brought baby hope. Is there any kind of is there a special bag you carry her around in or is it just any bag? Does she have a special bag? She has a very special bag, but I try not to bring awareness to hers this back because we've all heard a Sherpa bags, right? And every time you go out with a Sherpa bag, everyone knows you have a dog. So I actually have a bag that no one knows I have a dog. They're a little breathing holes on the side though, right? Yeah, there's breathing holes. What if she has to go number two or something like that? Does she tell you? She actually has wondering. I know, I know and I know when babies thirsty, I know when baby hope is hungry, I know when baby needs to go to sleep, I know her, you know, it's three months together 24 hours a day. Just like a mama knows. Exactly. Ladies and gentlemen, I present to you dog father. Joey valenti. Hey, hey, so I got to tell you. I got to tell you, this week I was bombarded. I shouldn't say bombard. I got a lot of calls. Well, a lot of emails about people what should they do, but they're dealt with their dogs and cats because they've been getting fleas and they're looking for the best treatments. Now because we had, at least in the northeast, had a ton of rain. This summer. So what it did is it gave us a really, really strong flee season. If you having a problem where you're finding more than three, four, fleas on your pet at a time. Then I call that a serious problem. Anything less than that, it's a problem isn't serious and you could probably take care of it with herbal sprays, stuff you can make home by yourself. You can use a combination of essential oils, citronella, rosemary, wormwood, peppin oils. They all work great on their own. You mix that, you get like a little, you know, like those little pint sized sprays, you get one of them, fill them with water, add about, I'm gonna say ten to 20 drops of any one of these oils. Now these oils aren't gonna be harmful to your pet. You don't want them to eat them, of course, but if you spray it on, it's not gonna harm the pet whatsoever. A combination of any of these, not only is just the deterrent, it also will probably kill the fleas in most cases. If you have more than that on your pet. And I'm gonna be honest with you, I have never been a guy that really wanted to promote the topical products. Those sort of things, but they do work out. I mean, they're not supposed to be toxic, the good ones anyway. And when I say if you're gonna go out, you're gonna put this stuff on your dog, go out and get a reputable one. Go out and spend a little bit more money. Just don't go to the local 5 and dime. And I'm not even gonna mention names, but the stuff that you're gonna find on a shelf for three and $4 is stuff that's just gonna be very toxic and could be harmful to your pet. And in some cases, I remember animal radio reporting on cases where pets have had major problems with these. So if you're going to go out and get it, go out and get a reputable one, even talk to your local groom or your local veterinary and what should I use. These things work really good. And you know what they will get rid of your problem. But you got to remember the problem doesn't end just there, because everything that walks through your yard that drops fleas are leaving them there, okay? So when this wears off, if you don't have a quick frost that kills everything, they're going to go back on your pet. And a lot of times when your pet is washed, it's going to wash the stuff off even though it's not supposed to. And you're going to have the problem all over again. So you have to treat the yard. You have to treat the bedding. You have to treat the car. You have the treat. Everywhere your pet was or the pet that's dropping dropping fleas. And that could be geared. That could be raccoons. That could be skunks. That could be any wild animal with the birds that are in your yard that can cause this. So sometimes you have to you may have to get a landscaper to come in and they'll put down pesticide themselves, which really isn't great, but you know what? It gets rid of the problem. And then hopefully, you don't have a problem anymore. But remember one thing, some dogs are allergic to flea bites, and they can continue to scratch afterwards. So you constantly want to look and I say this all the time if you see what looks like black pepper in the coat, that's fully droppings. You pet as fleas. That's all we have time for today. I want to thank Deborah Wilson for joining us as well as John Katz. I also want to thank Doc halligan for filling in these last couple of weeks. He did such a good job, even though still stuck. You guys made it so easy, even with diarrhea. I mean, come on, girl could have vet ass for. You know? Wow. Okay. TMI. I noticed Joey, Joey's not his amber. This is usually. I'm so sorry, Joey. "Sorry to just checked out for like just a tenth of a second right there. I forgot who it was. Jamie Farr, klinger from mash. The cross dress. I don't think he's done anything since. Speaking of cross dressing, Joey velani in today with I see that you've lost a lot of weight, but you haven't got a new wardrobe yet. The pants that you're wearing look like they're about to fall off. The shirt looks like it's about to fall. It looks you drown in your shirt. It was coming here. It's not like we're in front of a live studio audience here. I mean, if people were watching me, then I figured I can come dress a little bit down dress their house. When I go out in the real world, I got clothes that actually fit. And in case anyone is wondering how come I sound so good today is because our master had me on a tight leash and sent me an email that said that I better keep my lip closer to the mic because I am tracking this one every once in a while. So I'm like a dog. I'm like a dog whistle today, okay? You can hear me loud and clear, baby. You do sound absolutely phenomenal today. I'll just tell you that right now. And the master is much happier because of that. No, he actually he glued my bottom lip. The bottom lifted a microphone. It was a crazy good. This book come off, right? No, you're stuck. Sometime. Let's see. Stacy Cohen, of course, she is in her very own news booth. She refuses to join us. Join us. She's a smart one. What are you working on? You wonder, you know, you wonder about people sometimes. Why would somebody dress up as a goat and then go hang out with them? Maybe they were. And intensive study or something, some type of scientific thing. Or maybe they're just crazy. Well, there's a guy that's been hanging out in Utah, living with the goats, dressed with his one. I'll tell you why. And how they found him. Coming up on animal radio news. All he had to do was say Utah. Yeah. I saw that story. I love that story. The goat man. He lives with the goats. He's one with the goats. One with the goats. Yes. Yes. That's a sheep, isn't it? Yeah. This is the kind of stuff you'll only find out right here on animal radio. Joey velani, what are you going to be working on today? I am going to give you some real good grooming secrets if your dog gets a little irritation or brush burn. How to take care of it with something that you probably have in your bathroom. Toothpaste? Not toothpaste, not toothpaste. But I bet if you look under the sink, most households will have some preparation. I'm just thinking what's happening. Preparation H that's actually on my counterweight for other things. A toaster? Also on my show today, did I say my show? That is so Freudian. That's so weird. The master. I told you. The fact of the matter is I'm taking credit for what really is doctor Debbie and Allen cable and dog father joy velani. And also on the issue you got, hold on, no, no, no. You left that probably the most important person in the whole show. That's right. That makes sure that everything happens here exactly. I don't know. I would give him a good shot if I was you. Will do. She was busy. I was on the phone. I don't know what you're talking about. But I'm screening calls. I've got two conversations going on. She's a multitasker on the phone. I'll tell you. She is a genius. You know, she doesn't get the credit that. All these celebrities that we have for the season of stars. Look, he's trying to recover now. He's trying to recover. Yeah, boy. "Celebrating the connection with our pets. This is animal radio, featuring your Dream Team, veterinarian doctor Debbie white, and groomer joy vellani, and here are your hosts Hal Abrams and Judy Francis. Coming up this hour, we're going to talk pet insurance and whether or not you need to or shouldn't you. There's a big divide here in the studio. Actually, I sit on, it's not really divide. I'm the only one that doesn't have insurance. Well, me and Laurie, we don't have insurance. But everybody else has too many animals. I see the benefit of all the time, though. Well, of course. Because now there's more and more procedures that cost a lot more too. Yeah, I think it opens up the availability for people to use that kind of technology. They might not normally be able to afford it. We'll find out more about it in just a couple of minutes right here on animal radio. Joey velani is going to be talking ticks. TikTok, he was going to tell you how to get those nasty ticks out of your pet without leaving any ticks inside them and how dangerous it can be. And I'm going to dispel the myth about the whole heating up a paper clip and the cigarette. That's not a way to get rid of those ticks. Let's go to the phones first and we have Tim who I understand has two questions. Do we allow that? Do we allow two questions? I'm going to allow two questions. Hey, Tim, welcome to the show. Hey, thank you. I appreciate you taking two questions. First thing is, I've got to at least supposed to be a miniature long haired Doc, but I don't think there's anything miniature about him. He weighs 15 pounds, so I think at least sold me a line as well as a dog, but anyway. When he drinks his water, he gets choked. I mean, he gets these gags and sounds like he's going to throw up and just has a real rough time with it. So I was just wondering if there was anything that you knew could be causing that. And is it only when the shrinking water or does he have problems with food? No, no problems with food at all. And is it pretty consistent that he does it most every time he's drinking? It gets pretty consistent, yeah. Not every time, but he does it a lot. Yeah, and there are some dogs that we can see this where they start this gagging right after drinking. There's some concern that there could be a sensory nerve dysfunction. So basically they're kind of not sensing things back in the back of the throat really well and it actually is leading to them aspirating and choking on that water. So that's a possibility. It's a little challenging to determine that just from looking at a dog. So there is testing involved. However, there are pets that it's more than just that and it's more than just some kind of coughing this up. And for some pets, they can actually develop some dysfunction with the laryngeal area. And basically where the muscles in the throat coordinate normally and it allows food or water, and she actually kind of go down that wrong pipe. That's a little bit more advanced of a situation and with those pets we can see more labored breathing, they actually may have pneumonia. They may have a different breathing pattern at rest. So it doesn't quite sound like you're in that situation. So I guess the simple thing is that it might be something to look at. And to do a little bit more investigation, maybe start with some x-rays of the neck area and maybe have a good anesthetic exam where the vet looks down the throat. Those might be some things to kind of get a little bit of comfort, whether it is something of concern or not. Now, there are some simple things that I would instruct you to maybe try at home to see if this helps to alleviate the symptoms. And if it's all, if all you're left with is that just he kind of coughs and gags with water and it doesn't lead to anything more serious than we may just need to try these things. And one would be to try elevating the food and water on a little feeding stand. And for some dogs, that's all it takes is that just that elevation and little height can make a difference. The other thing you can try is to experiment a little bit. And instead of offering just plain water, you can actually add the water to the food. If he eats kibble or even canned food, you can just add some of his drinking water to that. And because he'll be eating it, it may not cause that same reaction. And that way you kind of help to minimize some of the coffee and gagging he does at other times. But those might just be some little experiments you can try to see if that helps make a difference for him. I'll try this. I think he's got his annual check up this week anyway and that's why I wanted to talk to you just to try to talk to the vet too when he goes to see him and maybe give him some ideas to look at also sort of like a second opinion, I guess. So absolutely. Okay, the second thing was that this is gross, but how often should you express the anal plans? It's one of our favorite topics in the vet world. The answer is often as you need to. Does your guy have some problems where he's scooting his bottom or he has leakage of those glands? He doesn't like he doesn't scoot that much. He does occasionally, but he really bites that to the lot. And I know it's not fully. He doesn't have fleas. And I take it, I take him to one of the major change to having grown once a month. And they say that that's one of the indications that landscapes we express. They always do it. And that's once a month. And I was just a little surprised that he may need it more than that. That seems kind of often. Well, for a dachshunds, once a month is actually a very common reality. More than that, I can't say that we don't occasionally have a pet we do more than once a month, but I try to avoid it if possible. Although, I'll tell you my little puppy. I'm down to like every two weeks for him because he actually starts leaking his gland material around the house. So I'm kind of with you there. I'm getting a little frustrated with these glands. But yeah, I would shoot for once a month if you can. But for the average pet maybe non dachshund, I'd say every one month to every three months. And how do you know if there's a problem? Yeah, if they're scooting, licking, biting at the bottom. Or leaving lovely little stinky smells that smell like nasty tuna coming out of a can. To me, that's a symptom that we need to get those. What causes that? Because ladybug doesn't deal with that. I don't want to jinx it there, knock on wood. But why is it one dog has to have their renal glands and his press more than another dog? You know, there's a lot of theories out there. Some folks think that it's related to the fiber content in the diet. So they'll try to bulk up their stools to make them not have problems. But you know, it doesn't always work that way. There are some breeds. We just tend to see more problems, Bassett hounds, and dachshunds are probably my number two breeds that we see frequent anal gland expressions that just need to be done for comfort and for owners happiness. And then just some dogs, we can see more problems if they have food allergies. They can have more symptoms of the anal glands. So some of those things we can kind of play with diet a little bit for some pets as well. And there's that occasional pet we will talk about taking these glands out. And I may be signing up boss for this surgery if I have to keep squeezing these glands every 7 to 14 days. I didn't realize. Maybe that'll be a past meal. Yeah, you can. And it's definitely the surgery is not the first choice we have, because if we can manage something without having to cut out a body part, we definitely would prefer it. But first the pets that have frequent infections or we just have a lot of ongoing issues with these gland surgery is definitely something to consider. Hope that helps you, Tim. I appreciate your help and enjoy the fall. Thank you. I appreciate you listening to animal radio. Can you tell your friends about it, okay? I will. Okay. More listeners we can get to better I can pay rent. Hey, I'm just telling you the way it is, okay? Let's pile on those listeners. And

"Celebrating the connection with our pets. This is animal radio, featuring your Dream Team, veterinarian doctor Debbie white, and groomer joy vellani, and here are your hosts Hal Abrams and Judy Francis. Oh, we have so much to get accomplished this hour, so I'll quit with the yap yap, yep. We definitely will hear from blue. He just wants to be called blue apparently. Doctor dira blue from the vet life on animal planet, and you worked with him. I didn't work so much with him, but he worked with some doctors that trained under me. So it was, yeah, he's been in kind of our network in Las Vegas. Las Vegas is one big family. It's just a lot of veterinary clinics that many are associated with. Well, you seem to be very proud of him. I am, I am. He's a charismatic successful veterinarian. And his talent is really communication. I think in any field, if you can talk to people and you can convey what you want to do and explain why, you will go far. And he does a great job with that. Okay, well, he'll be on. And of course, tonight is the last of the seasons. The episode. The vet life on animal planet, so you'll want to check that out after hearing him right here on animal radio. If you haven't already, we've all seen it here in the studio. Robert Zimmer will be back this hour with I love his lists. 5 secret activities your pets do while you're gone. 5 secret activities you're paying. Okay, but licking is on there three times. At least, Laurie Brooks worked so hard in the newsroom. What do you got coming up this hour? BS how? Do you know what BS stands for? Don't say it. I'm not gonna say it. Okay, but coming up, what does BSL stand for? Because if you love dogs, you're gonna run into this term sooner or later. And we'll explain everything. That's on the way. Let's go to Joe. Hey, Joe. Hello. How are you doing? Pretty good. Where are you calling from today? Santa Barbara, California. Oh, listening on K TMS. Thank you so much for doing so. I have doctor Debbie and Joey velani here. How can we help you? Well, I have an older cat that has long-term kidney disease, we've been cheating him with sub Q fluids for quite a while. And lately in the last year, he's been getting blood in his urine and we've had a couple of blood tests from the local vet here. And they can't seem to figure out what it is. Your analysis tests show there's no kidney or bladder infection. And he's recently starting to have hyperthyroidism, so we put him on the chap was all, and then we noticed the bleeding started getting much worse. So he had some of the bleeding before he was put on the top of all. Right, it would be occasional would be a pinkish orange and then it would go clear and then every once in a while would cycle in as it looks like there would be blood in it. And I got to the point where I was checking regularly just to see how he was doing. And now it seems to be getting worse. So it seems like we would have to see if he's a candidate for doing some kind of a testing. I don't know if it would be sonogram testing or some kind of cat scan, but I don't know if he's a candidate for anesthesia and I was just wondering if you knew what might be causing it, would it be some kind of damage to the kidneys or bladder when they've taken the samples of urine out of the bladder they use some sort of a sonogram machine to locate the bladder and they never said they could see anything that looked like a growth on the bladder. And I don't know if there's any kind of bladder lining problems or tumors that might be small enough or thin enough that would involve the lining of the bladder or the ureters or the kidneys. So have they taken x-rays on him? No, not yet. Okay. They went to wasn't really that proactive about it. There were only kind of worried if it was infection. And I don't think they're prepared to do any other investigation. Okay. So a couple of things that I'll mention as far as now if you were to say to me that this blood in the urine didn't appear until after your kitty was put on the tap as all and tap is all is a medication that we use to treat high thyroid levels in calves. So there are some cats that will develop blood in the urine solely from being on that medication. So if that's the case, then we have to find an alternate treatment method for the thyroid disease, whether it's surgery, radiation, or diet. But if the blood in the urine was present before, just magnified, then I definitely would kind of go looking for the other things that can cause blood in the urine. And the first situation I mentioned when cats have kind of a side effect with the tapas all, it tends to affect their platelets and that can cause problems with low platelets and bleeding, and we can see some of that blood in the urine. So if that's the case, we need to be doing blood work after being on tapas all to check to see if that's the case. And if they've done that, and then follow up blood work and said, no, his platelets are normal. There's something else causing this. Then I go looking for the biggies. The things you mentioned a couple of things. Things like affecting the kidneys. We can still have a pyelonephritis, even though a urine culture is negative. A pyelonephritis is a kidney infection. So we can't see that happen. So that's where doing things like x-rays or an ultrasound, maybe the secondary type steps that we would do after an initial urine test or a culture. If we see evidence of that, a news kind of imaging, then obviously we need to treat aggressively for kidney infection. But we can also say problems with stones in the kidney or in the bladder, that can cause this type of thing. And then other things as far as problems I see hypertension, especially in cats that have kidney disease, hypertension is high blood pressure, and that's very common in cats that have chronic kidney disease. And one of the manifestations of that can be blood in the urine. So kind of all of those type of things would be important things that I'd make sure we check for here. So that we know that we're heading in the right direction. So it sounds like you've got a good handle on things there, Joe, and doing something right for a 17 year old cat. That's awesome. That's wonderful. Because I've got this several times of the cats and I feel so sorry for them. Can you try to give them every opportunity? Please keep us posted. "On animal radio. What are you working on over there? Well, how do you tell the difference? Because these days, everywhere you look, there's service animals who are legit, and then there's, I don't know, maybe emotional support animals who may be trained, but they're not certified service animals. And then there are people who are service animal, wannabes, and they're all wearing these vests that say they are a certified service dog. So how do you tell? What's real, and what's not. And states are now making it illegal for this kind of phoniness and hooliganism that's going on out there. I think you can be fine now if you understand. It's a crime, yeah. But also you can't refuse service to anybody who has a genuinely needs a service animal. And you could be fine. And did you know that there are only like if you're in one of those businesses and somebody comes in to your business and you're wondering, is that a real or a fake service animal? There's only two questions that you can ask that person because if it is a real service animal, you could be sued. Okay, and you'll find out those questions in just a couple of minutes right here. On animal radio. We're also going to have the cloning folks back on to find out, well, there's a lot of questions still about cloning and why and how and the whole process. Yeah, I was wondering, I guess they have to use like a surrogate dog to carry the cloned poppy. Yes, they do. And give birth to it. So I'm wondering, you know, what conditions are those dogs kept in? And you know what I mean? The money's being made from them. Are they getting royalties? Or are they just getting saggy boobs and needing a tummy tuck in the end? That's on the way we'll find out. Write that down. I want to ask them that question in just a few minutes. In fact, you ask them that question. Okay. And he's back. So where were you? We imagined some super secret assignment maybe you were trying to figure out how to get a formula to get gum out of dog hair or something like that. That's exactly what it was. You know, I had to go down. I went to Florida and got gum at a Mickey's hair. That's what it was. Oh, okay. You're good that way. You're a giver. Joey velani ladies and gentlemen, the dog father. What's up today? So I got a message from one of our listeners and she has a chihuahua and she's having a hard time the dog doesn't seem to want to grow hair on the tips of his ears and its tail. That's weird. She wanted to know if, you know, she said the dog seems to be healthy, but before she brings into the vet, is there anything that they can do? So there could be a bunch of problems, but the real real easy one is usually circulation. And this is a good, this is the breeders trick. When they have dogs that don't grow hair in certain areas and usually in the tips of the ears and the tail, it's very common. That area stays colder. So what happens is the hair, it doesn't get circulation as good. So the skin itself is cold. So what they do is they coat it, and they use vaseline. So I'm going to say try coating it with vaseline every single day. Now, you don't have to goop it on, just lightly. And believe it or not, with that does, it holds the heat in. And I've seen significant results with 25, $30,000 show dogs. That they've done this trick on, that has grown great, greatcoat. So if you don't like those balls, yeah, I like the Baldi, they don't bother me and tell, but you don't have ever seen that. Yeah. Exactly what she said. It was like a rat. And I guess I just think it's cute, but yeah, if you try that first, and you'll notice you should start noticing hair growth within a week. And then once it gets nice and peach fuzzed over, then you can stop, and then it'll pretty much take its nature would take its course. Well, now I got to ask you this question and you knew it was coming. If I just dab a little vaseline right on the back of my head. You know what house? I don't know. I don't think you had his cold. Yeah, that's not your problem. Yeah, that's minoxidil or something for you. Okay, it's animal radio. Oh no. Be verbally abused, or you can verbally abuse me. I don't mind. He's used to it. It is a self help book. But you know what? I'm not much of a self help guy. I don't really like self help books, but this is a book that I will read. I've actually started to crack it between the commercials here because she's not only very funny, but he deals with some pretty interesting topics. And he's the kind of guy who like me was down and out, lived in a small place, no girlfriend, no job. Things were looking pretty bad. And he looked down at his cat and he said, why is my cat so damn happy? And he applied those lessons that he learned from his cat to his life and now he's doing well. He's happy. He's a happy guy. Because it doesn't really take no our animals are pretty happy with some pretty basic things. They got a nice bone or a toy or a home or just your love. And you know, giving them your love is the most important thing you can give your animals. Yeah, you're loving your time. Go give them a hug right now. Let's take one for doctor Debbie. We have Matt. Welcome to the show, Matt. I got a question for you about mine. It's about 5 and a half year old golden doodle. Alrighty. Well, he had TPLO surgery about 6 weeks ago. And I was wondering how soon is too soon to let him go to the groomer and get himself cleaned up. He's kind of getting to be a stinky little fella. So I'm going to have to explain for how he feels. I knew that question was coming. Cheap yellow surgery is done for dogs that have a ruptured cruciate ligament, which is one of the major ligaments in the knee. So just like a football player that blows out their knee taking that churn and making that catch dogs jumping off a couch or catching a frisbee can blow out the knee the same way. So your doggie ruptured that now how's he getting along post surgery at this time? You know, the next day he actually walked out of the vet underneath his own power and he's been doing great. The hardest thing is keeping him calm. He wants to jump on everything and that's the hardest part of it. He amazingly is doing well. He did rip out all his stitches after 7 days, but was able to say. I'm not surprised. He may have what we term goofy retriever syndrome. I'm sorry, I've coined that because I have one myself. He's a goofy retriever. Yeah, prone to just trouble. Are you having difficulty keeping him from doing things at this point now, huh? Yeah, we really are. We do get taken our half of our bed and put it downstairs as to keep them off the stairs. And stuff like that, but now we are walking him up the stairs on the lead. We've never had to harness his back, but we are having a hard time keeping him down like when he sees other dogs out the window. He wants to run around the living room. Kind of hard to slow him down. And when he wants to go real fast, he just lifts the leg up and then hops around on three. It's kind of hysterical, but he takes the slow leg out from underneath him, and then he can really move. Yes. Let's go fast mode. Yeah. Well, with a dog that recovers from a cheap yellow surgery, normally the healing time we're looking at about two to three months out. And about 8 weeks after the surgery is when ideally we ought to get an x-ray to see how the bone is healing because there is a plate involved with that. And we want to make sure that there's good healing callous of that bone there. That might make some difference in whether or not we want to give you a kind of free rein to get into some of the grooming activities. I'd have to say, because he has goofy retriever syndrome, we might push that back as far as we can for your typical standard type grooming. That being said, there are some dogs that I have to get some kind of grooming done, whether they're just stinky, dirty from being post surgery or what have you. If we do have to get him to a groomer or do a home bathing, there are some precautions that I would do. And when is to use a nonstick mat in the bathing tub. Because that's very important. We don't want slipping in losing his footing in any way. And jumping in and out of a tub is a horrible thing for a dog after this type of surgery. So if possible, we'd try to either do this. I've even bathed some dogs in our dog runs at the office. We don't have to worry about the up and down. And that helps to kind of make us feel better about that whole experience. And then know your dog and know your groomer. If it seems like it's something that they can pull off without risk of injury, then it may be okay. But for a lot of these really silly exuberant retrievers, I would push off the true grooming until we're cleared by the doctor that everything's healed. Okay. That sounds good. You know I can deal with most of it. It's just his face is getting kind of crusty and I wasn't sure how to handle that. Yeah, no. My dogs, they love a good hot rag on their face and I call it the doggy spa. So they come and get the hot one towels and I put on their face and they push and shove and push their way up, they get their ears cleaning at the doggy spot. So even something as simple as that may make him feel good. And you know, just like us, you gotta look good to feel good. "Me great honor to present to you the dog father Joey velani. How you doing today? I'm doing wonderful. How are you? Couldn't be better. Couldn't be better. Not small talk. What's on the docket? So, you know what the new trend here is aromatherapy, and a Roman therapy shampoos for your pet. So what I want to talk about is, I mean, do they actually work? Is it just a fad? To be quite honest with you, the aromatherapy when used in its pure sense. Like when you get the essential oil and you're putting in the diffuser for your pets, it actually works very well to be quite honest with you. I've seen it and I've seen it with my own pets. I have one of my dogs that can't deal with thunderstorms or that well. He can't deal with thunderstorms and, you know, we got the thunder jacket, well, which I could be honest with you, it did make a big difference. But it wanted to show us that I attended, they talked about, you know, why don't you try it? And it's a mixture of essential oils. I don't know exactly what the ratio and what it is. But they sell it all pre mixed and you use that and it actually made a difference. So that being said, what they try to do is duplicate these things in somewhat of pet shampoos that you now see on the shelves. We've done tests with three of the top ones out there. And to be quite honest with you, I haven't seen much of a difference. After talking to a lot of the chemists that actually make the products, what they're saying is if the product doesn't have the true form of essential oil in it, meaning 100%, it's not going to have the effect that you want it to. And then the other thing with a lot of these pet shampoos, a diluting them on top of it. So to be honest with you, if you're going to buy them, I would buy them just because you like the smell, you'll like the way they work. And that sort of thing, I wouldn't put too much science behind it of actually correcting the problem with your pet, but some of them smell great, so I mean, I just buy them just for that reason. Hey, you know what? I'm a nurse and so I was a couple of years ago reading up on they were using essential oils on patients in hospitals. And they said that studies actually proved that the first or second time they used them, they worked really well, but the efficacy after that was a little less each time. You know what? I haven't noticed that, but that's quite interesting because I will look further into it. It's something that we have not noticed greatly yet. So I can't say if that is true or if it's not in the pet industry, but you give me something to look into for my next tip of the week. So that's good. You gave me some insight of what I can look into. Yeah, I wonder if you build up a tolerance to it. Well, what I thought was that this plays on the pleasure centers of the brain, so it's actually that's why it's calming the calming because it's almost like works as a drug where it actually stimulates. It's a calming feeling. So I don't know. I mean, possibly. There are some good essential oils out there I used young living essential oils. And they are really high quality, and I started using them. That's actually what I use. Really? Yeah, it's great stuff, huh? Yeah, it's great. It's good stuff. Young living. And I believe that they have a pet line. You're listening to animal radio. You're not gonna believe what happened to me. I got bit by a dog yesterday in the park. Yeah, I'm just minding my own business running this lady's coming at me with two dogs, no leash. I run by the dog sneaks up behind me, jumps up on my forearm, takes a nice chunk out of there. And she still doesn't put the dog on a leash. Joke's on the dog though, he's gonna get sick from me. I don't know what was up with this woman after the dog had his way with my arm. She still didn't put him on a leash. There were two of them and just like a pack one circled behind me to try to attack from there while the bigger one confronted me in the front. Now the woman was just yelling and screaming, dogs are not paying any attention to her, 'cause they're fraught with anxiety and fear. So what conclusions would you get from this? Well, first of all, the dogs are not socialized at all. They're not used to being around people, and when they get around people that they don't know, they become aggressive. They think that they have to protect their pack, which of course is the woman. Dogs like this should never be allowed off, leash, especially in a park, it could have just as easily been a kid on a bicycle or a woman with a baby carriage. Now, it's not the dog's fault. It's the owner's fault. Please, if you're going to get a dog, it's your responsibility to educate yourself and find out what they need to be happy well adjusted animals. And how to give it to them. It's only fair. You don't want to lock your dogs away from people because they're unpredictable and may bite. If you're thinking of getting a dog right this down, socialization, structure, exercise, and affection. These are the four basic needs that dogs have besides food. If you get a puppy, bring the dog around as many kids and people as possible. Other dogs, too. If you get an older dog, you should be doing the same thing unless that dog is filled with anxiety and fear like this woman's was. In that case, you're gonna need some help from an experienced animal behaviorist who can show you how to socialize the dog. And it's going to take a little work confidence and patience on your part. But with a professional, a commitment from you consistent fair leadership and time, most dogs can be socialized and changed into happy, calm, well adjusted animals. Doc, I got to tell you, you know that every day I take my fleet home and I put it through not only myself but through all of the cats. Several times a day. And I can declare some cats flee free. They're hard to get rid of. But I have one cat, Nike, the studio cat, where is he? See around here? No, he's not around here. Because I don't want him to hear me talking about him. But he gets one bite and his whole body breaks out. Certain fleas, not all fleas have a protein in their saliva that when they bite the dog or cap put it in the pet skin. And the animals have an allergic reaction to that protein. But it is not in every flea saliva. So Nike is allergic to that protein in the flea saliva. Some animals are not. I have seen cats come in and dogs completely infested. And hardly scratching, and then like you said, like your Nike, you've got one.

"Question. So the woman is asking me, how apparently her kitty has problems with hairballs and it's more than the cat just spitting them up. They become a medical problem where a lot of times whatever they have to do a procedure in order to relieve the cat and what she wants to know would routine grooming actually stop it. And routine grooming is not going to stop the problem, but it will alleviate it, drastically. If you can, not only just by brushing and combing your cat. If you're able to wash your cat. And not all cats. You know what? But hold on. I got a trick here that I'm going to tell you guys about. Cats generally, it's not the water they don't like. It's the process of the spraying and all that. So if you go into bathe your cat, this is what I recommend. If you can have, and if you have a double sink, it's perfect, if not, if you've got two buckets, it's even better. Phil one up with a catch shampoo or a pet grade shampoo. And you're not going to feel enough food well, what are you going to add some is what I should say with nice warm water. And then you're going to have rinse water with just a teaspoon of vinegar to per gallon of water. What you're going to do is you're going to dip the cat in and believe it or not, you're going to see that the cat is not going to mind that it's comfortable. It's warm, it's like getting into a warm bath and usually they'll put their little pores up on the end and keep their head out and you can wash them and then you actually dip them in the rinse water. Now we used to do this a lot of times in a grooming salon when we had cats that just, you know, that you couldn't bathe them. And I'm going to say 90% of the times it worked extremely well. If you can do that, what that's going to do, it's going to eliminate all those oils. See, oils will hold the loose hair in the coat. So you can brush it, you can comb in a million times, but there's always a little bit that's going to stay behind. Because it's being held back by the natural oils of the coat. By cleaning the oils off, and you don't want to do too often because it was good for the coat. But if you did it once a month or every 6 to 8 weeks, you'll see a significant difference in the cat dumb having held hair ball problems because it's going to reduce some actually what this swallowing. If you can't do that, then just a brush, a comb, if you've got a good old corn starch to absorb some of that oil, sprinkle it in the coat and brush it through. And it will make a major difference. It should help obliviate the problems. And you say that works 90% of the time, meaning there's 10% where you'll end up in the hospital, right? Let me tell you, that's very possible. I wish I would be possible. I wish I would have known this trick back when I worked for the vet and had to bathe cats and it's funny. I bade them, and of course I would spray them because I didn't know that it was actually the spray that scared them and the cat that got me the worst that just tore me up was actually my son's cat that I brought in. Yeah, out of all the cats I beg that was my son's cat that yeah, they won't be skin you. By running by running up your arm and across your chest back and head. I hope they have claws. But yeah, that works. That works really, really well. And like I said, they kind of enjoy it. It's not like they don't like water. They don't, they just don't like the process of what we do and the spraying. Sure. Yeah, well, I have an agreement with my cat. He'll be fist 80 and wash himself, and he will not make me bleed. Let me ask you a question. Yes. Do you have hairball problems with your kids? I do have hairball problems, but I like comb and affirmation. And it's only when I don't. Because a lot of times the cats can't relieve it. And then they have to go on medication, and then sometimes even surgery. That's why I got the licky tongue. That's right. Okay, there you go. And when we started this show, our prime mission was to educate about Spain and neutering and the extreme homeless population of animals, most of them being euthanized many, many millions at the time. And since then, we've seen a lot of causes, a lot of different things going on where people get behind some great causes. But this one is one that we definitely get behind. It's called the fear free movement. And we've been talking about it, but if you're new to animal radio, this is a great concept where if you take your pet to the veterinarian, they're not afraid to go because they enjoy going because there's treats and they're gentle there. And they've made an environment where your dog or cat or flamingo or fish or whatever you take to the veterinarian will enjoy going to the veterinarian. And the creator behind that was our good friend, animal radio correspondent. Doctor Marty Becker. Have we known each other 17 years? I know that's pretty amazing. You guys are old. What the heck? Running out, I'm running out of hair. It's not working as good anymore. You and me both, buddy. I can't believe it. I know. A gal came up to me on a flight today and said, I can't believe this was a flight attendant. I can't believe you've flown 5 million miles on Delft. Because I've only met one other person in 32 years has flown more than you. But as you know, it's one of these things where instead of retiring, I'm re firing and just been how you like that one. I do like that. I do like that. And you've been gathering those miles really putting together a huge network for fear free. Yeah, and you know, to describe, but I wish I could say I came up with this slogan, but I didn't. It's called taking the pet out of petrified is the trademark slogan, and that about says it. It's simply looking after a pet's physical and emotional well-being, and I've owned all or part of 7 veterinary hospitals over the years and it's really funny. If you look on fear free pets dot com at my bio, when I was a little kid in grade school, they used to call me a farty Becker. And then when I was in high school, it was party pecker. Oh my. So listen, if somebody says farty, I'm going to look, right? If I go, my God, it must be a classmate, but Oz calls me America's veterinarian and it was so incredible this awakening when I heard this butter and behavior has talked to think, God, I've always, I've loved animals. I've been compassionate. I've always spoken for them in the 25 books or on TV or syndicated column, but I'd never looked after their emotional well-being. And now we know that we've been causing repeats of air psychological damage to pets and doctor Deb knows this. Everybody in veterinary medicine gets in this because of a love of animals. Nobody gets into to make life worse for animals. But.
