Well, for those folks who have maybe turned away from the commanders this potentially some encouraging news that developments from the NFL owner meetings has multiple outlets reporting that multiple ownership groups have submitted fully financed bids of $6 billion to buy the team from Dan Snyder. One of the groups led by John Harris. He grew up in Bethesda, also owns the 76ers and the NHL's New Jersey Devils. Nationals ramped up their exhibition schedule today three zero win over the Yankees. Now the Nats finished with the worst record in the majors last season. People seen him for years of the mayor league's thought he can hit and now he has a chance to prove that again over a full season. And he was a great story last year and great to see Charlie slows at the ballpark today. He's preparing for his 19th season as the voice of the nationals. "It's their haul. That's why I'm following their lead. And I guess I have just kind of decided to opt out instead and Susan said she understands that and it's tough because you have to put in the work to get the vote and you want to vote on some level and then people have decided not to participate for similar reasons, not just me, but a lot of other writers too. And she said I respect that thoroughly. I think the only way to look at this consistently is either to say I'm going solely on numbers and ignoring the clause or to never vote for anyone you deem problematic or to choose not to vote. I think any of those makes sense. She said, and that's kind of where I come down because basic stance on this is that a, I don't feel qualified to judge character and integrity the way I do on field performance, B I don't want to have to weigh being good at baseball against having domestic violence allegations or multiple DUIs on your record or whatever it is and say, well, you were a good enough player that it outweighs being a bad guy. C, I feel like if I vote, I feel like I'm tacitly agreeing to abide by the instructions that are on the ballot that they're telling me to consider these things, I guess I could just ignore them and historically they were often ignored, but I feel like if I put my name on that thing, then I'm saying, okay, these are your criteria, so I got to judge by that criteria. D, there's no mechanism for ousting anyone who has unsavory stuff come out about them after they're inducted like Kirby pocket E I'm getting a lot of letters here, but there's no indication on the hall website or in the plaque room or anything that anyone didn't have a Sterling character. And so if character is one of the stated criteria for induction, then you go to the hall and you know, you would be excused for thinking, well, these must just be fine upstanding citizens all, right? Even though they haven't been historically, but if you're saying that all these guys pass the character and integrity test and here they are and yet you don't have anything in the plaque room that's saying also he did this or he's alleged to have done this, then that sort of maybe misleads people. And then beyond all of that, I totally get the argument that I'm overthinking this and I'm putting too much stock in the character class and being too precious about the ethics of all of this. But I don't think it really serves anyone the fans or the writers or the hall to have what most people view as a Pantheon of the best baseball players be determined in part by whether those players were or weren't good guys or perceived to be good guys. I think most people, they want to go to the plaque room and they want to say these are the best baseball players ever. And so you would want your Barry Bonds and your Roger Clemens's in there, right? Even if they weren't. Good guys, and even if they did cheat, I think that's not really what people want. The plaque room to be, like, maybe elsewhere in the museum you could kind of convey that, but in the plaque room it's just like, these are the best baseball players. And that's not what it is because of the character clause. And so I both don't want to abide by the character clause, but I also don't want there to be a character clause. And the last thing, I guess, is that the baseball hall is sort of the outlier among similar institutions in putting such an emphasis on character, like the NFL, the football Hall of Fame was just like, who cares? If this was a good football player, we will put you in. And I can see the argument against that too. But I think on the whole, like most halls of fame just kind of do it as were you one of the best ever to do it. Okay, then you get in and then we can provide the context in other ways. And when we talk about that player, we can mention the bad with the good at everything, but not just entirely exclude them. So I feel like the whole process is just sort of a mess. And everyone has their different standards and different definitions and I kind of want it to be reformed in some way and it doesn't seem like the hall has any interest in reforming it in those ways. And so I guess I just have less interest in being a participant. Our Hall of Fame discussion has been so much of a downer that if there was a game going on right now, Nick Castellanos would have hit a home run already. I already would have happened. I'm still a couple of years from my vote. I kind of personally interpret the character clause as being baseball character kind of how they comport themselves on the baseball field based on how the early writers took it and some of the discussions surrounding that. But it does put one in a pickle. The ten player cap is still a problem for me. I always tell people I'm fortunate that I wasn't a voter earlier because I would have voted for more than ten players on the year that Jeter was inducted. And I would not prioritize given these limits of putting a player who was a slam dunk to get over 75%. I wouldn't be motivated in any way to vote for them. And which case I would have been the only public vote against cheater in which case I could never safely go into New York again, which would kind of stink because I do enjoy the city. And I got a little taste of Cincinnati fans hating me last year when I kind of was the Cincinnati voter who kept Jonathan India from being the unanimous rookie of the year. I got a lot of that from Cincinnati fans, and I think that if it was a Hall of Fame cheater, I think I would be hearing about it for the rest of my life. So I'm fortunate that it wasn't the case that I had to do that. Yes. All right, we've talked a lot and somehow it seems like no major news has happened. While we have talked, we will see if that actually holds by the time we post this episode or whether we have to reconvene for some buzzer breaking last minute news. But you can find Dan rating all the time at fan grass breaking down transactions and also doing his team preview Zipp's series. Most recently, the nationals, which is, you know, not the sunniest team when it comes to projections, although I did enjoy that as a Joey manassas enthusiast. The number three comp that zips spat out for Joey manesis was one of those borderline hall fame kids. We were just talking about Jim rice. I don't know how that happened because his top comp is Xavier navy, his second comp is Jose guillen, and his third cop is Jim rice. So one of those is not quite like the other one. Remember Jim rice at the point of age that we're talking about from anesthesia. Now we're talking like 1984 and 1985, who is kind of towards the end of his career. Yeah, true, yes. I'll take it. Anyway, you could also find Dan on Twitter where he makes fun of the rockies, and dunks on people who don't understand how he has access to zips. That is at. KI Dan always a pleasure. It is my luck that you were not in San Diego or did not have the flute this week. Thank you. That is the benefit of not being ambitious about putting on pants and going places. Well, as is always the case when we try to record during a busy news time. Lots happened after we finished recording. The more minor stuff is that Josh bell signed with the guardians, Andrew heaney ended up signing with the rangers, so as we speculated, the rangers were not done. We're not even done improving their starting rotation. They clearly are not prioritizing durability. They are prioritizing stuff and potential and peak. So add he need to the mix in Texas. That was really the least of it because Scott Boris took his makeshift stage and he held court and delivered his stand up routine, probably the best line from Boris on the day on Xander bogarts and the Red Sox.

"It sounds like. I am mostly recovered, yeah. I still have, you know, you have like lingering gunk. For sure. Just to give everyone a really cool visual, I hope your world eating while I said that. But yes, I feel much better. Thank you. It is nice. Audible gunk. Yeah. Just to my ears. Yeah, it has, it has receded into the background where if I have to interact with people in public, I don't think they're going to worry like, oh no, what is she about to give me? So that's good, because you don't want to make people worry about that stuff. Excellent. Getting real misses out of the way for the playoffs. Exactly. So today's Joey manesis minute. I have an update for you here. My nationals. So on Saturday, the nationals scored one run against the Marlins in likely NL Cy Young award winner, sandy Alcantara, who went 8 innings, gave up three hits in just that one run. And that one run was on a Joey manissa solo Homer. Oh my gosh. Of course. And then he homered the following day as well. And now he has cleared the 200 plate appearance, threshold, which I'm going to pretend is something significant. And he has a one 58 WRC plus in his 204 plate appearances, so that ties him with Jose Altuve for 5th in the majors. Minimum 200 plate appearances. It's Aaron judge, you're done Alvarez, Paul Goldschmidt, Mike Trout, and then Altuve and Joey menesis tied for 5th. A bunch of name brand baseball players. Right there. So again, I keep saying people should be happy to be in the club with Joey manassas because exclusive company here. Yeah, I think that sometimes we all anticipate where baseball talent will come from and other times it asserts itself and Joey menaces is here to say, you should pay attention to me because I'm a baseball player, you know? Three 26 360 three 5 79 I keep waiting for this to end, but even since I published my piece about him on September 2nd, he has out hit one Soto even since that piece was published. I was like, I got to get this out there because how long can this continue? And even since then, even since my little Sports Illustrated cover, jinx that I put out into the world, he is a one 33 WRC plus de Soto's one 27. So I kind of can't believe that this is still happening, but it's no longer just a bit. He is just pretty good at baseball. It seems like maybe not quite this good, maybe not quite like better than anyone except they're judge Jordan Alvarez Paul Goldschmidt and Mike Trout, but surprisingly good for a 30 year old rookie who was called up just to be the Soto slash Josh bell replacement. Yeah, you know, I'm just so happy for nationals fans, but they get to have a thing to in the here and now to enjoy, right? Because whenever you do these big trades that are about future potential production, I know that Abrams has been up and everything. But your asking to hold on to a reserve of goodwill that can't help but dwindle for the time that passes, but they don't have to worry about that because they can just put goodwill in the joy manassas goodwill bank and enjoy it, you know? It's not like it's not a lot on a relative basis because there are a bunch of other guys on a baseball team at any given time, but it's certainly not nothing. So there you go. Pretty great. All right, so we are going to spend much of this episode talking to friend of the show, Ben gibbard of death cab for cutie fame, who has a new album out and also has a team that is possibly about to be in the playoffs. Possibly. The number discussed that we yelled at you for being confident, Ben. It was more than once. Yes. So Ben is a big fan of the Seattle Mariners, has been for quite some time, and like all Seattle Mariners fans, he's been waiting, all of that time for a playoff appearance and might be about to get one. It's not official yet. It's looking good. So we're going to talk to Ben shortly about the Mariners and also a little bit about music and the album, but mostly about the Mariners. We've been promising Mariners content for some time. So here it is. And I figured before we bring Ben on, we could maybe talk about the Mariners most likely playoff opponent as we record on Tuesday, which is the Cleveland guardians, and unlike the Mariners, the guardians have clinched their birthday clinched a division title. The guardians are the winners of the AL central and that upset win. I guess we could call it, has occasioned some conversation. About playoff ads and about underdogs and about people not believing in the guardians, et cetera, so I guess we could talk a little bit just about the guardians in general, and then we could talk a little bit about the fact that nobody believed in the guardians, quote unquote. You know, they're a good team, everything that I will say about them will probably be AL central adjusted. I don't want to diminish their accomplishments. They've been the best team in that division. It's not a great division, but they've been good enough to win it, and they have finished strong. I think they're 18 and three in their last 21, as we speak. And meanwhile, the twins have gone into a tailspin, the twins were in first place in that division for

Hey, we got a lot of college football, of course, on this Saturday. Good showing by Maryland, but they fall short at number four Michigan 34 27. Now I say they had a good showing because in the past, as we know, the Turks have been just run over by some of the bigger names in the Big Ten. In fact, since joining the Big Ten, the terms have gone three and 20 against the likes of Michigan Ohio State and Penn State. "Record number of good rookies as well. But, you know, we talked about the difficulty of The Rookie of the year races with strider versus Harris and Richmond versus Julio. And it's not just those guys. It's a couple other guys in that mix as well. So historic prep of productive rookies. So enjoy it. Yeah, here I am being like, it's less exciting, but I don't know. If you're looking at it on the individual player level, what a time to get to be a baseball fan. It's a pretty, it's a pretty great time. So, you know, I think that we should, we should be excited about our time. We should just hope that the competitive picture can keep pace with the individual excitement that these players can bring because if it can, then watch out. You'll never want to do anything else just watch baseball. We've met so many major leaguers this year. It's a record number of debuts. I think it's 286 as we speak Thursday, have made their major league debuts this year, and that's up from the record of 268 last year, and we still have a couple of weeks to go in this season. And the records prior to less season was 2017 to 62. So two 86 and heading closer to 300 by the time it's all said and done. Gosh, that's a lot of new baseball players that sort of why we started the meeting major leaguer second. We probably have some good major leaguers we should meet and catch up on. Backlog. I wonder if this will be the high water mark for that because it's been really high for quite a while now and part of the reason why it's so high this year is because of the expanded rasters probably at the start of the season with the health and safety protocols at that point still. So I wonder whether this will be the most we ever see because assuming we don't have any more pandemics coming along hopefully fresh pandemics that will cause expanded rasters between that and between some of the other measures they've taken with limiting the number of pitchers ever so slightly on the active roster and then some of the other things with optioning players and how long you have to remain in the miners and that sort of thing and only expanding from 26 to 28 in September, et cetera. I wonder whether this will recede at all or at least plateaued. It's got a plateau. I wonder whether this will remain the record for some time. I kind of hope so, not that I want to borrow anyone from being a big leaguer, but it's just hard to know who everyone is. It's hard to keep track. Yeah, it can be a little disorienting. You're like, you turn on the TV and I'm like, I feel like I'm obligated to know who all of you are, like for my job. I should know, I should be able to look at all of you and be like, and I know these three things about you, and, you know, my hit rate isn't bad or anything, but I do feel like this year, I'm like, who are you again? No, it's like when you go to your high school reunion, you know, I'm like, we went to school together for four years. Who are you? Right. I just got an email from Major League Baseball about judge and the Red Sox Yankees game. So it says that there will be live coverage. Let's see what it says. National broadcast partners Fox Apple TV plus MLB network and ESPN all feature live game coverage from Yankee Stadium. All eyes will be on The Bronx, et cetera, et cetera, all four games will be available nationally across MLB's national broadcast partners, but it looks like it is still Apple TV plus on Friday. It does not look like that has changed. It's Thursday on Fox and then it's Friday on Apple TV plus and then it's Saturday on MLB network and then it's Sunday on ESPN. So four different places to watch or a judge over the next four games. Yeah, I mean, it's appointment viewing. And I think the cool thing is he's not likely as we've said, you know, to set the actual single season record, he's not gonna sniff that probably, but it's not impossible, so it'll still be exciting to watch even after he surpasses Maris because it could happen. You know, if he keeps a good pace, it could. It's not likely, but it could. So it's you know, it's exciting. 62 is a record, everything after 62 is also a recording. Right. Exactly. All right, I will close, I guess, with this stat I forgot to read from foolish baseball Bailey about Joey manassas. Players with 57 or more hits and ten or more homers in their first 43 career games since integration, the famous 57 ten club in their first 43. Really, the 57 ten 43 club that we talk about all the time. It's Orlando cepeda, Willie mccovey, Albert Pujols, Ryan brunn, Bo Bichette, and Joey menesis. Good company for those guys to be with Joey menesis in that club. I've got to read the past blast. Past black. This comes from Jacob I'm rinky. And he writes, like Shohei Ohtani, Johnny lush, of the Philadelphia Phillies, knew how it felt to be a two way player on a bad baseball team. On May 1st, 1906, the 20 year old left hander through the first of his two career no hitters, striking out 11 against the Brooklyn superbas. He also spent time playing first base and outfield in between his 35 starts, batting two 64 in 227 plate appearances. By the end of the year, lush was pretty tired and fed up with the Phillies as the Kentucky post reported on October 6th. The quote is another Philadelphia player who would like to get away from the team is Johnny lush, pitcher and general utility man. He is sore at the Philadelphia management because he hasn't been giving a cent extra for overtime work. He's done in the infield and outfield during the past two months. He was signed as a pitcher and all this time has been taking his regular turn in the box. He got no rest on the days between, but has covered some other position, generally first base center field, or right field. He feels that he ought to get something more than his pitcher's salary for all his work, but the management rules otherwise and Johnny wants to get away. Jacob says the Phillies finished in fourth place 45 and a half games behind the Chicago Cubs, who won a record one 16. Lush did get his wish to escape Philadelphia the next year, traded to St. Louis for pitcher buster Brown. He played out the rest of his 7 year career with the Cardinals, although he was never quite as good as he was in 1906. More than a century later, Johnny lush remains the last player in ale or NL history with 200 innings pitched 200 innings at other defensive positions and 200 at bats in a single season. The 202 102 hundred club. Hall of Famer bullet Rogan also performed the feat in the Negro national league twice. So Johnny lush, a somewhat significant two way player from 1906 and he argued that he deserved a race for being a two way player. He was hired as a pitcher and they were using him as something other than a pitcher as well. He's like, hey, pay me more money. Yeah. Which I guess is reasonable. You're doing more work. It's like I was a writer and now I'm an editor, so give me a raise. And the ringer did. Otherwise, I would probably be complaining like Johnny wesch. So I guess that Shohei Ohtani, maybe he should have just said I'll be a one way player. And then when he showed up, he's actually I'll do both, but you got to make it, you got to make it worth my while. I don't think that would have worked, but it will work when he is a free agent. Oh yeah. Somebody's going to back up a brinks truck. Yep. All right. Well, now I guess you can go blow in your nose and sneeze to your heart's content I can't wait. I'm gonna do some screaming sneezes. All right, that will do it for today. Seems like the Red Sox may have listened to our episode about not throwing her in judge so many strikes because they walked him in his first three plate appearances on Thursday.

"If you must, you can't prevent you from purchasing a ticket, but we can prevent you from buying a T-shirt. While we're here, that we will not stand for, you can buy a T-shirt somewhere else. Yeah. Bring it into the ball. But I'll be damned. If you're going to be selling shirts in the ballpark, it just sort of surprised me, I guess, because generally when there's money to be made, like someone will make it. Yes. Obviously, there is money to be made here. And it's not just Dodgers fans on giant's turf. I mean, you know, you're telling me you can't get a Yankees cap at the trap or something, you know? Like, sure. There's got to be a market for that. I guess in the interest of general baseball, you would want people to be able to buy stuff that would represent their team wherever they are, wherever they go to a ballpark. Yeah. We will find a way to spend some money a and also just display our affiliation and deepen our attachment to baseball, but I guess I get it that also you want to feel like you're protecting your turf. If the team is sanctioning the vendor and clearly it is that the team can decide who gets to sell stuff in their ballpark and what they get to sell, then I certainly understand why they would say, hey, don't sell stuff this. Our rivals, so that everyone will be walking around in our rivals gear and showing up on TV and our rivals gear. Showing us up. Yeah, I share your surprise that it is a place that has proven itself to be somewhat immune from the capitalist impulse. But I think that that's kind of, that's kind of nice, you know, that you get to, you know, it adds to your sense of place that that is not a place where you see your rivals stuff being sold, right? But it is, this is our place. This is home and we get to say what it is. Here are the players, the featured players on the Mariners, team store website, ichiro, fine, Felix, fine. Kyle Seeger kind of weird Adam Fraser excuse you a oh jeez Suarez, great season, but what? Luis Castillo cool, Carlos Santana? Really? And then you have the players section, which is somehow different than future players, don't know. Ken griffey junior Mitch hanker Robbie ray ty France, Logan Gilbert, all of those are fine. Dylan Moore, I mean sure, Carlos Santana, again, Kurt cassell, Jake lamb, who was just DFA. And Marco Gonzalez. Do you know who is notably absent from both of those lists? Didn't hear you say Julio. I'm going to say Julio. It's kind of weird that there's no Julio in that list. Don't you think? It's also weird that there's no JP Crawford in that list, right? Anyway, I just, I think that you wanted to talk about the feeling of home, and I was willing to indulge you, but mostly this has become an opportunity for me to say, if an addict to a better job, like all of this stuff looks like you're at a corporate golf retreat and it bumps me out. So those are today's ethical philosophical dilemmas about baseball. In other news, well, first a quick Joey manassas update. Still good. Yeah. Out hitting one Soto and one Soto and Josh bell combined really did not think that would continue really thought that we would have to just like mention that while it was true and hope that it didn't change immediately. Wrote about him, my piece was published on September 2nd, and I was like, well, this has been fantastic, but how long can this keep up? I've got to get this article out before he slumps or something gets hot and the fun fact is not true anymore that Vanessa has outplayed both of the players who were traded and whom he was replacing when he was called up. I mean, it's still true. And people are treating him with some respect, some fear. Yeah. So as people were tagging us on Twitter to note that the braves were intentionally walking manassas, they free past them a couple of times in the past couple of games to load the bases in front of Luke voigt and then when they finally decided not to do that with a runner on first, he homered. Yep. So they should have intentionally walked him. That time too, I guess. Just based on the results and he is still handily out hitting one Soto as a padre. So that's pretty great. I did not think that would actually last throughout the season. I was like, the fact that this is lasted even since the trade for the first month after the trade is amazing and miraculous. It can't continue, but it actually has to the point where they might actually finish the season with that continuing to be true. So love it. It's a really, it's just a very fun and silly remarkable thing, and it lets me tweet exclamation points at you. So I'm all for it. I think I hope he continues forever. I guess I hope it continues forever, but only if. I hope that the NASA of it continues forever to be clear. Yeah, no, I want one soda to be like, you know, Juan Soto, as we know him, and as we have come to expect him to be, and also it would be so cool if we look back and we're like, you know, wald Soto as advertised in the long term, but get a load of this Joey meniscus all he needed was an opportunity and he is want Soto two. That would be delightful. Yeah. Luke Voight has also handily out hit Josh bell, which is also sort of funny. Poor Padres. Poor Padres. They're in better shape than the nationals overall. This is what the nationals have for you. Just gotta let them have this for now because there's not a whole lot else to be happy about on that team right now. Yeah, but you don't know this, Ben, but I am three for three in not doing screaming sneezes into the microphone so far as we're recording. It's really great. Thank you. Yeah, you're welcome. And appreciate it. I'm sure. Yeah. So I want to talk a little bit briefly about the AL central. We should probably do an AL central leadership update. Yeah. Just because we've had a couple change of regimes. So the tigers have a new head of baseball operations, Scott Harris. Who was poached from the Giants and also formerly of the cubs. And then the royals also have a new leader, although it was someone who was already there because what happened is state and more is out the door. So this is on the one hand not surprising on the other hand it's very surprising because it seems like that might very well be a lifetime appointment. So this is notable news we lost John Daniels last his job this year, one of the longest tenured readers of a baseball operations group and then you had Dayton Moore in that group as well and he's gone now. So it turns out that just being bad at baseball for quite a while can actually get date more fired. Yeah, it's an odd, it's an odd thing because on the one hand you feel like I kind of thought he'd outlast us all, right? Yeah. We have talked a lot about how it hasn't felt like they have a great sense of where they really are in their competitive window, but we have appreciated their can do attitude and you know there have been some weird aspects of date.

"Pedantic observation I made that they were saying that the standard size flapper was two inches in diameter and they were comparing it to a baseball and I pointed out that actually a baseball is bigger than that. It's so close to three inches in diameter, but it seems that the flapper sizes actually are a bit larger than that listed size. And so they are similar to a baseball or softball. Joe blank continues oftentimes, shoppers aren't always aware that there is a size difference. And we can't have that because if you get the wrong size toilet flapper, then it'll be flapping. Then you won't be able to flush and you'll have a wiki toilet, and that would be a disaster in the water would keep running. So once shopping in aisle or online, we feel the baseball softball analogy is a good point of reference for helping shoppers determine what product they need in the event they don't have easy access to their toilet to measure, which is usually the case if you're in a store, probably don't have your toilet handy. If you do, then you probably need more than a new flapper. Yeah, right. Joe continues as an American made brand. I pointed that out. They advertise that quite often. Corky strives to be as helpful as we can. That's nice, especially as it relates to ease of selection. Fun fact, we are also woman owned. Fun fact. Feel free to share any or all of the above, as well as my contact information if they have any questions. I don't know if I do anymore. I think all my questions may be answered. I guess my one remaining question is why did they offer the fruit as the alternate sizing comparison online when did that get added to the picture? And Joe concludes we are honored to be mentioned and that Ben chose quirky. Actually, my mom chose quirky, but I'm sure they're honored by that too. All right, well, good digital marketing, Joe. You just got some digital marketing happening on this podcast there. So thanks to everyone involved in that. What other updates do we have? People keep sending me Joey menesis updates, but believe me, I know. I'm monitoring the situation quite closely, but showing the narcis uncomfortable sleep. No, I'm kidding. There was a sort of a viral story about Joey manassas because Joey manissa threw a ball to a kid to a ten year old girl who was in the outfield and there was a guy who just came in and the ball from her and then just left. I don't think it was Zach Campbell. It was someone else just like some grown man, just like ducked in, plucked the ball, just out from in front of her face, just stuck his glove, intercepted the Joey menesis throw, and then just left and this came to the attention of the nationals and Joey manassas and he sent the girl a ball and a nice note, which was nice of Joey manesis and we also got an update from listener and Patreon supporter Rick, who caught Joey meneses, walk off, or at least retrieve the ball, and he informed the nationals, and he was able to attend a game and go to batting practice and meet Joey manassas. And hand him the ball and get a thank you in person, and he said, Joey was very nice. So those are all my updates about Joey manassas and balls. Oh, Ben. Another thing that I should probably bring up is that we talked the other day about the rules changes that are coming in for 2023.

"You'd like it to be cheering based, but you know. Yeah, well, the nationals have fan favorite Joey manassas and the Padres have temporary fan least favorite one Soto, but the Padres are in playoff position in the nationals just became the first team to be eliminated from playoff contention. So it all kind of evens out, I suppose. I also wanted to mention a tweet that some people sent me. This was from Wednesday, and it was tweeted by Jim pasan, pass on Jim on Twitter and he noted a fun fact about a couple of legends, active players with more extra base hits than strikeouts in their career, minimum 50 plate appearances. First, Albert Pujols, 1394 extra base hits and 1391 strikeouts. Second, Williams has to deal. 39 extra base hits 28 strikeouts. So yeah, I would say pools isn't pretty good company there. And I would also draw people's attention to Williams as videos manually line this year because he has spent most of the season sadly with the triple-A affiliate of the marwin and not the Marlins themselves, but in his triple-A playing time, which is a pretty substantial, more than 240 plate appearances. He has a 9 42 OPS, he's hitting three 15 three 76 5 66 with a 5% strikeout rate and even fewer walks and actually some pop, so call it the man up. I say let him hit more extra base hits without striking out. Yeah, I'm here for it. All right, also, since we spoke last, I guess there have been some developments with the New York teams with the first place New York team watch. Yeah. So the raisin braves both won on Wednesday, but the Yankees and mets both won twice. They had double headers and they swept their double headers. The Yankees lineup was pretty depleted, but fortunately for them, they were playing the twins, which has tended to go pretty well for the Yankees over the past two decades, and so they remain in first place. The mets briefly were in a tie, which was a first since mid April, so that was notable, although I guess technically maybe the mets have the tie breaker, so I suppose if you want to go down to that level, they were still sort of in pole position there. And so they're clinging to this tiny sliver of a lead here, and they have lost mixtures, and they have lost starling Marte, seemingly not to severe injuries that will cost them a ton of time, but at least day to day in Marte's case and Scherzer is on the IL for at least a brief stint right now, so that's semi concerning, I suppose. But I just want to say, this is not the same thing as the Yankees losing a lot of their lead in that division because the mets have not played badly. No, they haven't. Not at all. Like if you go back to June 2nd, let's say the braves have the best record in baseball. They are 62 and 24, which is even better than the 61 and 25 Dodgers since then. The mets have the 6th best record or the 6th most winds over that time 52 and 34. So it's not that the mets have blown it. It's just the braves have played like the best team at baseball since then. So I think we do have to distinguish a little bit because yes, if the mets blow this, it will be at least somewhat historic. I saw Sarah Lang's tweet about that. She said the mets are the 8th team since divisions began in 1969 to have a ten plus game division lead, then have another team either tie or overtake them for first at some point. So that's notable. That's not a list that you want to be on. But it's that the braves are on like a beat the all time win record pace since that time since the start of June. So it's not so much a case of the Met's coughing it up, which they have been known to do at times, but I think if they ultimately do finish behind the braves, which is still up in the air, obviously. I think we could put this in a different category from collapse. Yeah. Overtaken. Yeah, it takes, you know, in some, in some ways, it's a lot like the AL MVP race Ben, where, you know, it would take something remarkable to displace a season where a player might set a new home run record, right? Right. I would take something amazing. It doesn't mean that the record is an impressive. That's a no Tony is the MVP. I'm just making loose comparisons that we can think about and get emails over. Yeah, right. I knew there was a reason I picked June 2nd. That was when the mets had their maximum ten and a half game lead. So that wasn't just a totally arbitrary point. Only semi arbitrary. I meant to mention, by the way, that if you were in suspense about what happened in that a's Orioles game that Queen Elizabeth saw the first two innings of. The a's went 6 to three. Which is perhaps not surprising, given that the a's were a winning team that year although not a great team in the Orioles were pretty lazy team that year.

"Supporters. I am Ben Lindbergh of the ringer joined by Meg rally of fangraphs hello Meg, how are you? I'm well, how are you? I'm doing well, although we just learned before we started recording that Queen Elizabeth has died. Longtime monarch and naked gunstar. I'm not laughing because death is funny. I'm laughing because when we were getting ready to record, I was like, wow, Queen Elizabeth died. That's neither here and we're there. And then it's here. Well, apparently, we started the last episode with toilet flappers, so this is not any more off topic than that. Anyway, the Queen is dead long live the king anyway. Monarchy is weird. Monarchy is bad. I was just reading an account of the queen's first baseball game. Just tie this back. Tenuously. Not gonna do a whole retrospective of the 70 year rain here, but yeah. I was looking back at the first baseball game because of course her character at a baseball game and the naked gun. She was not actually there in that movie, but she did attend a baseball game a few years later, so I'm reading a story from UPI archives may 15th, 1991 headline queen attends her first baseball game. And she attended a Baltimore Orioles Oakland athletics game, and she was in the company of president Bush, the first one. And it says the queen dressed more appropriately for an evening affair in her below the knee blue and red dress black gloves and three strands of pearls stood in the Orioles dugout along the third baseline in a receiving line with husband, Prince Philip, also RIP. The president and misses Bush, the First Lady were a blue and white floral print dress, so now we know what everyone was wearing or at least the women in the party, I guess no one cared what Bush was wearing or what Prince Philip was wearing so they met the teams and it was apparently sort of a strange seed because it says, well, the honored guests took their dugout positions designated with their names on three by 5 cards the song, Brown eyed girl, blared over the memorial stadium public address system. And their images were flashed on a giant video screen in right center field. I've been playing baseball for ten years and I'm used to a normal atmosphere, said oriole shortstop Cal Ripken junior after his four handshakes. This is a lot different. There's a lot of excitement. A's manager Tony La Russa, so something's never changed. Then a manager, although on medical leave himself right now, he said the players were told to be natural while meeting the dignity and apparently some of them may have taken that too far. Jose canseco was chewing gum. Well, shaking hands with royalty. And the royalty was protected by bulletproof glass to the side and 5 police officers on the roof, just in the event of a naked gun style scenario. So she shook hands, she smiled, she greeted each team member. That's a lot of baseball players. Bush introduced her to Cal Ripken senior. She chatted with him for a while, and then they went on to the field and fell territory. They waved to the crowd for a while, and then they went and sat in the mezzanine level box of then Orioles owner Eli Jacobson. Scorecards were waiting for them on their black leather cushion seats, although it does not say whether the queen kept score. I would imagine that because this was her first baseball game, probably not. Not. Yeah. Well, I guess if she ever had to install her own flapper. And looking at instructions and they said, I might need a baseball sized one. She could say, hey, I know what that looks like. She would know she probably touched a baseball that day. Yes. 65 years old by the time she attended her first baseball game. And she had a monitor near her, so she could watch on there as well. And Prince Philip had field glasses, so he whipped those out when there was a close play at the plate so he could get a better look and meanwhile there were some protesters advocating a reunited Ireland who were there hanging signs and Orioles ushers were trying to take down the science. Now, interestingly, they left after only two innings. Now we talked the other day about what constitutes a visit to a ballpark, right? And we said that in order for it to count, you have to be there for a ball game. And we sort of suggested that you have to be there probably for most of the game, ideally, at least for an official game, someone asked us what if you take a ballpark tour on a day when there's no game. Does that count as visiting the ballpark? I guess maybe so. That's sort of a technicality. As long as you're there for baseball related reasons. But they departed after just two innings, so can we say that they really visited memorial stadium? I guess they got the behind the scenes tour. They got to go in the dugout with the bulletproof glass, but they didn't see the whole ball game. Yeah, I feel like it doesn't count. Particularly if you're someone who's lived for approximately 1 million years, like what slice of your life is that even. Yeah. Not a lot. And Dick Cheney was there, Faye Vincent, then the commissioner of MLB was there. Apparently, Bush told fave Vincent that the queen wanted to come to a ball game and he suggested Baltimore, I don't know why, I guess it was close to D.C., probably. Probably that. No Nats at that point. Right. But there were some gifts exchanged, so the Orioles owner presented the queen with gifts for her 6 grandchildren, regulation sized bats for each child with their names inscribed on them. I guess that's nice. Yeah, she dined before the game in the dugout lounge with olive Orioles management, apparently. And the story mentions that she declined to eat during the reception, but did drink a martini. According to a waitress who worked the event. I think that I understand why the prevalence of saint martinis or what have you is less pervasive in ballparks because, you know, once you hit the hard hooch, people can get really rowdy. But I would be sure nice to just be able to sit and drink a good martini of ballpark. I know that sounds bougie and it probably is, but it's like it would be nice to sit there. Although I gotta say, there are really good margaritas at Chase field I've come to discover, so. Yeah. I'm sort of surprised that she had not attended a baseball game before then. 1991, I mean, she'd been Queen for a very long time by that point. She'd been visiting the U.S. for decades, I think, her first visit to the U.S. was in the late 50s when baseball was even more pervasive. How do you not take in the national pastime if you're a visiting monarch at that point? How many trips did she make? Snubbing baseball until finally attending. But maybe it was the naked gun that inspired her to go to a baseball game. Maybe. As well actually go. It could be. Yeah, it could be. You just don't ever know. Anyway. To a baseball queen technically, even if for only two innings. Boy. Oh boy, Ben, you know? I meant to start this episode by discussing a baseball king, Joey manesis. Who has continued to hit pretty well. He had a three for 5 day recently, then he had another multi hit day with a couple doubles and then he had a big RPI on Wednesday. So Joey menesis just continuing to do Joey manassas things. Not really slumping so far I did mention in my article that menesis sort of rhymes with regresses, but he hasn't fully so far.

"Might actually end up facing an easier opponent possibly if this wound were to continue and the race really have a tough schedule ahead. They do. But it's possible, but then again, you might lose home field if you advance to the ALCS. I guess maybe they've lost that anyway. I mean, there are a lot of considerations, but a lot of the time, it turns out, according to this playoff format, this wacky expended playoff format that might actually be better, not to be the best team based on the playoff matchups. Anyway, I'm sure the Yankees would feel better about themselves if they were to win the division, and just avoid having a completely historic collapse. Which again. We still think is the most likely outcome here. Yes. I'll just engineering a scenario where we get a lot of emails. Yeah, right. We've already gotten a fair amount, but we'd get more. Get more. Anyway, not saying panic, but, you know, a little anxiety is perhaps appropriate and if you're a Yankees hater, then maybe you can start salivating a little bit. Don't get your hopes up too much. You can be careful with that. I don't think that what you do or say or feel about baseball really has that big of an impact on baseball, but I am saying we're getting into the spooky season, even though it's a 104° where I live, so you want to mess with forces you don't understand. I don't know that you do. I'm watching a Joey manassas at bat. Oh my gosh. I just keep hearing about Joey manesis from Ben. I was sitting at the ballpark. Three for 5, three doubles today. I'm like, I'm watching Corbin Carol and you're still talking about joy, Vanessa. Hey, good for you. Corbin Carol would be thrilled if he could have the debut season that Joey municipal is having. Fair enough. He's already three for 5 today, Meg. Wow. You can not contain can not be stopped. He is a one 69 WRC plus. I love it. It's just my favorite baseball story. I'm so happy, I'm happy for you. I'm happy for Joey. I'm happy for joy's entire family. All right, last thing I wanted to mention is that there are going to be some big league games in Mexico City.
