"The amount of people who think she's in on a publicity stunt to promote her movie, all you have to do is Google search her movie, and in September, the first week of September, the tickets were sold out, the ticket sales set records, biggest opening box office before, like, all you have to do is just do one simple Google search and then you won't sound like a complete buffoon. I mean, that's, I mean, that's the thing. She doesn't, she doesn't need the NFL. She doesn't need Sunday Night Football. Did people not see what she did on the eras tour? Every stadium, every ticket sold out. What publicity does she need? I was saying this on my podcast today, but what amazed me about the eras tour was just looking at my Twitter feed, every sports writer I know, probably present company excluded, was at the eras tour. Yeah. I thought as collectively, we had decided that Jason Isbell was the official singer-songwriter sports writer. In fact, we decided Taylor Swift was the official singer-songwriter. Like all these athletic people, people at the ringer. And people think she needs publicity. Yeah, right. Well, she may need publicity from this fan. I'll give you the, I don't know if you saw this. It's sort of, I thought it sort of flew under the radar, though it's not really in the sports world, but to me, the single greatest thing I've seen about this entire saga is that NBC's Steve Kornacki did not know who she was until last week. That's, is that real? I didn't see that. He didn't know if she was a singer or an actress. He didn't know what she did. Well, she wasn't cast. You can Google Steve Kornacki, Taylor Swift, and it'll come right up. Ooh. Like his MSNBC coworkers had to explain who he was to her. That's it. Who she was to him, I mean. I did. I kind of regretted that this controversy, if that's really what the Taylor Swift thing is, didn't happen in the nineties when we had crusty newspaper columnists still painting barricades. Right, right. That would have been a great, some great hate leads there. You just, people be like, it is Taylor Swift. Where's Bruce Springsteen? Well now it's flipped. Now there's like backlash to the people bashing Taylor, bashing the Taylor Swift coverage. Those are, you know. That's when I, that's when I piece out of this whole deal. Yeah. And then the NFL Instagram, we're getting worked up about Instagram, really? It's show business. One thing I like about this business is the show business. Like that's fun to me about the NFL. When people are like, well, you know, if we, Ron Brady replaces Greg Olsen, we're going to lose a lot of nerdy football takes. I'm like, who cares, man? I mean, like Greg Olsen, he's great, but like Tom Brady's one of those famous people on earth. You don't want to see him on television? You don't want to give that a test drive to see if he's good at announcing? I do. What bums me out, like I agree, it is entertainment and there's times I'm abused by it and there's times I get bummed out about it. And what bums me out about it is I just hate that we live in this time now where every single thing, sports and non-sports, is a conspiracy theory. Like nothing is just what, like the NFL is fixing the games so the chiefs win and then they're actually not even trying to hide it because on their Instagram, they said the chiefs at 2-0 is 50. Like, do people just not think? I mean, not everything is a conspiracy theory. Well, that's what I mean. The NFL is the most popular live programming in America. Taylor Swift is the most popular person on planet earth as far as I can tell. It's fine. There's no need for a conspiracy. Everybody's doing great. Travis Kelsey wanted to date Taylor Swift. That's it. Period, end of sentence, like move on. There's no, like Roger Gale's in his office with, you know, Andy Reid trying to, it's just ridiculous. And then the Instagram. I wrote about this on Tuesday. You know, after four weeks of the NFL season, that's sort of when you get a little feel for who's good, who's not good. Things can, obviously one or two teams that are bad now will turn around, but the prime time schedule for the NFL the rest of the season, man, it's rough. You have a couple of big Cowboys. Cowboys Eagles is a game that's left on the slate. That'll be big. Cowboys Niners this Sunday. Cowboys Niners, right. And then you also have a Chiefs Eagles game, but you have, as of now before flex, the Broncos are on prime time four more times. The Bears are on prime time four more times. The Jets three times. The Raiders three times. I read a whole thing. I wrote a thing before the season. I actually got into this with the NFL schedule maker, Mike Northie was on. They put, the NFL puts the Raiders on prime time like five times a year. The team always thinks they've had like two winning seasons out of the last 20. I don't understand it, but I think you're going to see more flex this season than ever before based on what the rest of the schedule looks like. That's a little weird, right? Because now we have three quote unquote prime time games. And we have an agreement that Sunday night football should be a really big game. And we increasingly have an agreement at least most of the time that Monday night should be a big game. Certainly feel like a good game. And then we got, but then we got Thursday night and then we got the two networks with the Sunday windows. And the thing about is every time they create one of these things, there's not enough good games. Right. There's just not. There's more interesting games. And now that you and I have four weeks of, you know, of NFL results and we could be like, ah, actually that's more fun. That Ravens game that you didn't put up there, right. Or whatever it is with the kind of weirdly fun through four weeks, but there's just not enough good games. There's just really not. And so you're trying to like keep all these network partners happy, and then you're trying to get Amazon happy. And I mean, the bears though, like, did anybody think the bears were going to be good? I don't, I mean, I get the market. It's like an interesting idea, you know, even if they had Aaron Rogers and they were like two and two now, that would at least be fun. Right. Now it's not fun at all. The NFL got screwed with the Rogers injury. There's no doubt about it, but they really loaded up on the Broncos because of Sean Payton. Why? Didn't we learn this lesson the hard way last year? Exactly. And they loaded up on the bears for, I guess, cause the market is Chicago. But you know, I also think not enough good games and maybe not enough good teams. I mean, you have the Eagles, Cowboys, Niners, and the NFC. You have the Bills, Dolphins, the Chiefs. After those six, I mean, okay, you want to throw in the Chargers maybe, the Ravens, but. Yeah. It's the bad teams are just featured. So the Raiders three times, I mean, I'm going to be interested to see because Flex now is here on Thursday night for the first time. They're only allowed to use it twice, but there's like a Vikings Broncos game late in the season. And then there's a Bears Vikings game. And I think there's a Bears Panthers game. So I would get ready to see a lot of Flex. The Vikings are the perfect team to give to somebody that you're trying to give a kind of good game to, kind of an interesting game. But yeah, I would think you, I mean, look, there's, I mean, if you could, even on Thursday night, if you can just get like the second most interesting noon game, you know, Flex into that, that's an improvement over the Bears. Absolutely, yeah, absolutely. Going to college football for a second. I saw Colorado, their game against USC on Sunday was 7 million viewers, which is a great, great number for a regular season college football game, but down big from what they had done the previous couple of weeks with 10 million and 9.3 million is this just like, okay, seen it, done it. They're really not a good team. Or is there something more going on here? What do you make of the big drop from like 10 million to 7 million for Deion and the Buffaloes? It was a really fascinating story because it was one of those things that really did punch through into pop culture in a way that very few basic sports stories and especially college football stories do. Like I know my, I'm always interested in my mother-in-law who's not fall sports, watches like GMA and stuff like that. Like she knows about Coach Prime. Right. You know, that entered her world that was very different and distinct from my world. So like I was, you know, and I think at some point the novelty wears off a little bit because you got to think those early Colorado games are being filled with viewers who are interested in Coach Prime, probably don't really watch all that much college football and are just interested in this because it's a novelty and it's cool and it's fun and it definitely was all of those things. And then as you say, when they lose one game, a blowout against Oregon and then lose the second game which is actually a fun game at the end against SC because they almost came back. The novelty wears off a little bit. Now I would say that like 7 million for a Colorado, which a Colorado football game is based on the wildest dreams of just about anybody before Dion arrived on campus. That's pretty amazing. Yeah. But yeah, and I think by the way, my interest in watching that is a college football fan who's watching a bunch of stuff on Saturday around my Texas Longhorns. It's probably tapped out a little bit now. They'll play more interesting games down toward the end of the season, the Pac-12, that I'll come back for, at least like check out. But in terms of having that as like, this needs to kind of be on the whole time, I probably just left that zone. Yeah, I think they're hurt by them just not being good. I mean, when I say not being good, I mean, they're three and two. So if you're ESPN or Fox, they're five and oh, you can sort of make it Mardi Gras on New Year's Eve rolled into one when you're airing them at three and two, they're not in the top 25. I mean, Fox will still act like it's a big deal, but- Yeah, and they don't have the best player. They don't have the best player who himself is a fantastic story player in both ways. So yeah, I mean, Fox, let's recognize, Fox squeezed this lemon pick a fruit here, for whatever the analogy, for every ounce it had. Yeah. I mean, big noon kickoff just was in Boulder and got me to leave for like a month. You know, they sent there, that was so funny when I saw this Dion Postgame press conference and he was talking about people who doubted the program. So it's like, I don't know, it seems like Fox's number one crew has been here basically every week that they have rights to the game since the TZU game, like they love Colorado. They want Colorado to be good, trust me. I did not watch the Colorado USC game because I was out, but I did see, I guess Awful Announcing did it and I saw it somewhere else where I guess Gus Johnson and Joel Klatt were getting beat up pretty good because they just were clearly rooting for Colorado the entire time. Did you get a feel of that when you watched it? I didn't watch enough of it to have a pronouncement on that either way. But I would just say for Fox's sake, SC being really good is also great. And for college football's sake, SC being an awesome team, like they kind of nearly were last year, that's awesome. That's awesome too. So I think if the baton was handed from Dion to Caleb Williams and Lincoln Riley, then it's great. That's good too for everybody. Yeah, viewers seem to think, I mean, I didn't see the game, but obviously Fox is rooting for Colorado. I mean, they've made that clear. So I don't know why that would surprise anyone. And again, it's just like, I mean, there's things in sports that you can plan out in advance. We know Cowboys 49ers is going to be an awesome Sunday night game before it starts. And even if the Cowboys right were two and two, it would still be a pretty big and really fun game. But then Colorado just kind of drops into your lap and then they beat TCU in that opening week. And it's like, if you're smart and you work in a network, you're like, we are in on this. We are in on this until it ends. And then we are going to grab this. And that's exactly what Fox and ESPN began to a lesser extent have done. A couple of more things here. I saw that this gets into the streaming thing, which we've talked about so much, but I chuckled when I saw that the NBA now is going to put some games on ABC on Wednesday nights. And it's just fascinating to me where we're living now in a time where everything is about streaming and things going back to broadcast. And like, it feels like the cable is the one that's getting sort of screwed from both ends, yet no one's cable bill is going down one penny. Let's make that very clear. Yes, absolutely. I mean, it's so funny as someone who grew up with broadcast television and that being where the big games were, including professional basketball, CBS and NBC before it went over to ESPN ABC. And it's been now funny to see everything migrate back there because it still commands this huge television audience. You know, like they were, they're left for dead and they are going to die. We all know that and people don't watch sitcoms and all that stuff as much anymore, but as a place to stick games, especially by the way, when you have a writer's strike that just ended and an actor's strike that's still going on and you don't have that flow of shows, you're like, yeah. And you're right. Then all of a sudden cable, which is a terrible deal, becomes a worse deal. Right. No, oh wait, I don't have the games that I had. I need ESPN. I needed ESPN to watch. Oh, or Turner, whatever. We're like, oh, okay. Well that sucks because I'm paying through the notes for this. And I saw, I guess the big 10 is putting a bunch of games on Peacock. Oh, that's what it was. I think Ohio State, they have a football game on Peacock and the Ohio State fans were all pissed off. I don't know how people don't know that this is coming like by now, like this is what's going on. Yeah. And I was, you know, I'm one of these people. First of all, this happened with Notre Dame. Was that two years ago now? Everybody lost their minds. Cause it was on Peacock. And it was against like central Michigan. It wasn't like a real game. Yeah. And I'm also just like, you really couldn't figure this out. Yeah. You have, you can figure this out like in 10 minutes if you really want to watch this game and it will cost you a very, very tiny amount of money. I have no sympathy for this because I went to college during the nineties, during the late nineties. And you know what? University of Texas, there would be like one game every year that was on pay-per-view. Yes. And it was like, wasn't it like 50 bucks to buy it? It was expensive. I mean, at least 30 and probably more than maybe 39.99. Remember when that was the nineties pay-per-view WWE price. And it was like, and it was against New Mexico state. I'm like, oh my gosh, I'll have 40 bucks to watch New Mexico state. Yep. That was terrible. And it's so much easier to be like, I can pick up my phone and watch this for five bucks or seven bucks or whatever it is. Even if I, and watch, by the way, speaking of WWF, like tons of other pay-per-views or whatever I want to watch I mean, that to me, it seems like just such a small, a small. There was something else with streaming that I saw that way. And it's so much easier to get. We should also add Jimmy. I just, again, like, I understand we are at this weird spot where you have to have some form of cable streaming and then you have to have all these things and everything's spread out and it can be weird and annoying and all that kind of stuff. But it's like, I remember the bad old days when stuff just wasn't on TV. Right. It wasn't on TV. And if I get in my car, I can listen to everything on Sirius, like every freaking game, you know? It's like, oh, I have to go run an errand real quick. Boom. Here's the, not only the Cowboys game, but the Cowboys local broadcast that I won't listen to. Like that rules. Yeah. I will say I don't get to listen to NFL games much because I'm always watching them, but you know, one or two times a year, you're like you're in the car. I used to think that the local baseball announcers were like the biggest over the top homers.

"But I want to talk about a couple of lighthearted things here, because you're always good with this stuff. But speaking of, you know, things you said that you may regret and things that could get you in trouble, you had a just an enormous faux pas that we have already discussed in this podcast back in January. But you botched the name of one of the great living actors, Mark Paul Gosselaar. You have it down now. We're good there. I know he came on and did a bit, but yeah, it's all straight. I did use one of the great actors. Yes. Yes. He's become a good friend. So he's got to turn negatives into positive. And and in this case, I got his number somewhere on. I said, look, I said it a few times when I did it during a playoff game, possibly whenever I did it or it was a big game, maybe a Thursday night game and a big crowd. I said Gosselaar. Right. And so he ended up talking on the phone and I said, so here's what I said. He goes, you know, that's actually how my name is pronounced, right? Because so many people botched it. I guess it's Dutch. It's whole solar and not and not gossler. But so I was just trying to be true to his roots. That's all I was trying to get it right. And the rest of the world has been getting it wrong. Well, you know, what I thought was I'm glad that got all cleared up. That was fun, though. That was definitely fun back then. And he did a funny thing on one of the games. You know, what was the other you and Nance together was a big U.S. Open story and then another story, which was huge for me because I wrote about it. And I remember the numbers on that column being tremendous. Your colleague, Joel Klatt, did an interview with Koepcke, who revealed that in his entire life he has never once had a hot beverage, coffee, tea, hot chocolate. Never. And he said because he grew up in Florida. I just to me, I just can't wrap my brain around that revelation. It's just impossible. And I feel like, you know, maybe he said it and now he's going to go down the line with it. But I just know how. No, I mean, just because he grew up in Florida, I was born in Florida. I've I've had plenty of hot drinks. I just I don't believe it. Even though Brooks and I have had our moment. Yeah, I consider somebody that that I really enjoy. And I think he's smart and I think he's somebody that is pretty honest. And sometimes it gets him in trouble. In this case, I think I just I don't believe it. I don't care how many times you would tell me, even if it wasn't on TV. I think that's B.S. The guy travels for a living. He's never been in a cold climate, needed a little. And first of all, I mean, the tragedy of going your whole life and never enjoying a hot chocolate. I feel bad for the guy. I feel bad for the guy, too. And I live on coffee. If coffee was taken off the face of the planet, I would go with it. Yeah, it's it's definitely. If when when you get that addiction to it, if I don't have a cup, I like I'd say maybe one, two in the afternoon. If something's going on, the headache I get is so extreme. And that's not good. But when it's not good, I have now I'm thirsty and I've got one year old twin boys. You need it. Yeah, I just need some sort of a pick line to get that into my system. Yeah. Here's Brent Musburger from January of twenty nineteen. I got to ask you this before we turn to the game, because I've written about this this week and it's amazing to me and I got to get your opinion on it. You spent a lot of years at CBS, the NFL today, the the great Irv Cross, Jimmy the Greek, Phyllis, everyone remembers it. And CBS has has been adamant. They've put out statements. I actually talked to Sean McManus on a conference call this week that they will not mention betting in any way, shape or form, whether it's lines overrun. There's even referring to it, joking about it at all on Super Bowl Sunday during the game and in their pregame show. Now, I mean, personally, I think it's ridiculous, but you don't want to maybe get into it during the game. But you have like a seven hour pregame show and there's so much fun you can have with the props and all that. What do you make of that CBS decision saying they said it's their policy not to discuss sports. Well, to me, I think it's completely foolish on CBS part because they had a chance, as you point out, with the pregame show growing as long as it is. They missed an opportunity to take a camera and have a shot over from one of the places where they bet in New Jersey, because there has been so much money going through the tunnels or over the bridge over there to make a bet. My goodness. Fans who go to the Giants or the Jets game can bet at the Meadowlands and then go on over to the game. That's a story. Whether or not you approve of it is irrelevant. That's a story. And you want to see how many people are lined up over there. The interest in gambling. No news division worth anything would ignore that because it is part of the build up. Now, you're afraid of a phone call from the commissioner's office on Monday. You have to deal with things like that. You're a big boy. You pay billions of dollars for that. People who bet, or even if they don't, they are very interested in who those analysts in the pregame show think will win and what will the final score be. And that's a pretty easy thing to do. You don't have to linger on the gambling technology or the terminology and things like that. But it is stupid on their part. Listen, I understand during the game, I got that completely, that you don't need Romo and Nance going on about the gambling because that's not the most important thing. However, in the fourth quarter, and believe me, I've known Nance for a long time. He knows exactly what those numbers are. His late father knew them too, because I know this, so that he should keep an eye on the 57, whatever the over and under closes at. He doesn't any longer have to be cute about it. But once they hit a 60, he should be willing to say, and that makes a lot of folks very happy and some others unhappy. That's all you have to say. That's all you need. Those of us who participate, and you go on about your business. It is far from the biggest part of a Super Bowl. I get it. But it's real, it's happening, and you're sticking your head in the sand if you're an executive, and you don't at least address it. And there should be part of the pregame show. In fact, the last hour should show some of the crowds in New Jersey because it's coming, it's coming. It ain't slowing down, despite the fact that the leagues are trying to backdoor federally. Sorry, I'm sorry, but that ship has sailed, and states' rights is what it is, and the Supreme Court ruled in favor of New Jersey. You think you're going to stop gambling on sports in the state of Nevada? Here's a memo. That's not going to happen, okay? So you have to live in the present, and CBS is ignoring it, and shame on them. You hit the nail on the head. I'm not looking for Jim Nantz and Tony Romo to mention the line for three hours or mention the total for three hours. But, you know, like you said, when the game hits and over, you throw in a little line there. I think last week, or two weeks ago, with the Patriots' chiefs, that game going over after being 14-0 at halftime easily could have been a mention. And I think there's the angle of also, you could have, you know, Tony Romo cracking a joke here if Gladys Knight hits the over-under on the national anthem would be a hit with people watching the game. We're not asking you to do a full analysis, but if Gladys drags it out and we go over the time there, let me hear Tony say something about it. Yeah, I mean, listen, you know me. A long time ago, I didn't think there was anything wrong with it, okay? So it is what it is, and that game would not be as big as it is today without gambling through the decades on the National Football League, okay? And everybody with a brain knows that. I mean, I drive by a stadium rising from the desert ground every day. The National Football League, putting the Raider franchise into Las Vegas, and you are less than 15 minutes away from a half-dozen different sportsbooks that I know of where you'll be able to bet on the game and then go into it. So you cannot ignore what's happening. They brought about a controversy that didn't need to be there. They could have answered it, so yes, of course we will refer to the legalization of gambling on games in precincts other than Nevada. We're not going to make it the biggest part of our pregame. We're not going to be the biggest part of our game, but our folks will be well aware. End of sentence. Next question, please. But instead, they want to bring this controversy upon themselves for whatever reason, okay? So good luck to them. It's even more jarring when you think about the fact that it's the network of the great Brent Musburger and Jimmy the Greek. Now they're afraid of sports betting. You know, Jimmy, when we brought the Greek aboard, I'll never forget the meeting we had at our lunch with the then-commissioner, the late, great friend of mine, Pete Rozell. And Pete, at the end of the lunch, you know, he was fully, listen, he used to go to racetrack all the time with Amera families and the Nene family, so I knew that he knew a lot about gambling. And he said, Jimmy, can I ask you one favor? And of course the Greeks said, yes, yes, Commissioner, what would you like? Because would you please not use the threes, the sevens, the tens, the three and a halfs. So of course the Greek and there were, Bob Wessel was there with me. We agreed. But then on the way back, we walked back from the lunch, back to the CBS offices. And so the Greeks said, now what the hell are we going to do? And so Bob said, let us think about this a little bit. And he brought in Bob Fishman and Mike Pearl, the director and the producer of the initial season of the Greek. And that's how we all came up with the checkboard. So that, okay, we won't say the numbers, but if the Greek lines up four or five checks on that one side, people will know. He's got blowout city.

"I didn't love it. Why is it? I want the Giants. I want to be like, hey, the Giants did a great job. It's not personal. I don't love the contract. I don't think that the players in that locker room look at Daniel Jones and be like, yep, yep, that's the guy who needs to get that type of money. I think it was too high. Did they have to pay him that? Maybe. Why is saquon taking the position that he's taking? Because he's more important to them. And some regard, I know quarterbacks are generally more important, but I think that there are a lot of Daniel Jones in the NFL. And there's not a lot of saquon Barclays. And I think. In a locker room, you can't fake it, everybody knows. Acutely, who's the most important? Who's the one carrying the team? You know, who are the alphas. And if the contracts don't align like that, you know, you can, there can be issues in the locker room. I hope that that's not the case with the Giants. I just, I don't sense that that's going to all of a sudden turn into, I mean, I know Joe burrow is going to get more than that, but he got a lot. That contract was not small. No, it's 40 million a year, and obviously you saw what hurts just got 51 million a year. It slotted one would think, but it's still way up there. And the fact that maybe we won't think that this is as high as it is right now when we get the burrow deal. We start getting these other deals out there. Right. So last one for you. The news that Ian rappaport put out there that will levis stop by New England had will levison. I mean, again, that's another piece of the puzzle. Yes. Going into the draft. What's that all about? First of all, the best part about the Patriots is that you never know if they're doing things just so that tweet will go out. You know, it's almost, what do you think of that? Where you're sending a message? Yeah, you're just kind of like, we're just gonna throw it out there so everyone's like, wait, are we, did we miss something? There's also the Belichick aspect of and I've heard he's done this over and over and over again as you get the kid in. But you never know if he could wind up playing you in a key week and you already know on the grease board what bothers him. Because you've asked him, play him, or if you're gonna get him later, you know? Like, this is the time to be in a position of, you don't get to bring in a free agent and be like, get on the board. Yeah, right. You know, so this is the time when you have kind of the authority over the meeting where you can test them. From here on out, now you're just trying to sell them on coming. If you're in a free agent or if you're playing them, now you kind of understand those things that maybe give him trouble. So this is not new for Belichick. Levis is an interesting piece. He's a talented guy. He turns the ball over too much, but man, he makes a lot of big throws. I would say the one knock on levis that I have other than the turnovers is those other three quarterbacks at the top. Bryce young CJ Stroud and Anthony Richardson, there are moments when you can tell that he is elevating the entire team to a place where maybe they shouldn't go and competing for and maybe winning a game. Levis doesn't have many of those. He played pretty well in 2021 against Tennessee, but there aren't those moments where I'm just like, man, levis is dragging Kentucky across the finish line. And you see that with the other three guys. Man, if we're sitting in Kansas City a week from tonight, Joel clad, which we will. But if we're sitting there and levis is still on the clock at 14 and the times taken down. We'll be talking about this tweet. This visit. Because he'll be available. 14. What about bijan Robinson at 14? Will he be available then? It's entirely possible. That's the sweet spot. I think bijan is like the ten to 16 range. So the Patriots are on the clock and they have a choice between the two of them and Chris, whichever small school you've never heard of that's got an offensive guard. That's who they'll choose instead of the two of them and send you up a wall strange two. Well, what do we do or will have us if you don't think Matt Jones? What did you like Cody mock? North Dakota state? There you go. Offensive line. Write it down. He's guaranteed to be the Patriots pick. He could take his teeth out and it would be great. Does he not have to grow up on a farm? 5000 acres? He's like throwing through. The teeth knocked out. He hasn't even had a price, right? You can have a ton of clam chowder through a straw. It's perfect. Just for you. Fantastic. Joel, thank you for coming on, sir. You bet we appreciate it. I appreciate you. Absolutely. Jackson Smith and Jacob, by the way, coming up an hour, best receiver in the draft. I will tell him that

"He's a lot like Christian McCaffrey. Now, he's not going to get that comparison a lot, but he is. Really good inside the tackles, good vision, jump cut, lateral movement, really good outside of the tackles. He has home run ability. We've seen him make guys miss, have top end speed. But he also catches it really well. Both out of the backfield and lined up in the slot. He can move around. He's a smart player. Texas really struggled on the offensive line and yet he still produced, never complained about it. Great teammate hard worker at some point when we see, let's take the cowboys, for example. Oh boy. I'm not saying that they're going to take bijan. But when was dak Prescott his best? When Zeke was the best running back in football, okay? Zeke was the best running back in football. In part because he was on his first contract, which means you can spread the resources around the things like the offensive line. When are we going to start talking about the advantageous nature of the 5th year of control for running backs as well as quarterbacks like we always do inevitably at the end of the first round? What are we going to talk about if we'll levis is still on board? Well, you're going to want that 5th year of control. And first round versus second round. Hand in hooker will be having that conversation a week from tonight too. Exactly. So when does that start with running backs? Because it's pretty clear to me. You look around the league in these top end running backs. Everyone's hesitant to get them to their second contract. When are we going to start talking about getting dynamic offensive threats with a 5th year of control? And the running back position, it's tough to think that that's going to be the position that would lead that charge. Maybe, I don't know, because the receiving group usually is deep in a draft, one would think, although you're hearing that this year is not as much as previous years. Although somebody like Jalen Hyatt jumps out at me, they flowers. These are the names of guys who went viral over the past 24 hours at mahomes with throwing past Tuesday flowers and here come the cheese. Exactly. That's another one, although I don't need to hear his name very much. He ruined a certain particular bowl game for me. Well, the replay officials ruined it. Good answer. I appreciate that. But yes, I just because they're running back position. And again, I'm happy to have this conversation if there's time a week from tonight or the Friday night of the draft as well. I mean, how in the world is Austin Eckler, who the only person who scored more touchdowns over the last couple of seasons than him is nobody and Jalen hurts is the only one who scored more touchdowns than him last year. And so he's trying to get a new contract out of the Chargers and they're saying no, you can go look for somebody else to go play for. If you can, if you can find that team, I just don't know. And again, Isaiah Pacheco scored a touchdown in the Super Bowl. Sort of sky more. And they weren't even remotely close to the first round of the draft. And it'll be interesting. But you're right. And we're also having that conversation about saquon Barkley right now. It's not showing up for off season workout activities. I want to take a break and then just have one more brief segment with you. I want to hit the Giants with you a little bit too. As you said, you always love bringing it back to giants. Yeah, your opinion is about quarterbacks. And there's one in particular that you said on this show as well. And then I just want to dive a little bit more into the quarterback group before sending you up the four O 5. I've got Joel clap right here on the rich eisen show from Fox Sports and also my colleague a week from tonight and next week on NFL network draft coverage. Joe Claus is here on the rich eisen show. We just explaining on the Roku channel stream about Gus Gus Johnson his partner on Fox Sports, certainly the big game on Saturday. His brilliance. What do you mean he calls you off of stuff? What do you mean by that? I get so enthralled and deep into the football and the match up and so I can think to myself like I can't wait to talk about this like garden nose guard match up and that's where the run game is and he'll be like, he'll be like, hey, youngster and he kind of like rubs his head. And he's like, hey, young buck. We gotta make stars. Guards aren't stars. We're talking about will Johnson, the corner, we're talking about the quarterbacks. Yes. And he's right, you know? He's right in that sense. Young buck. Yeah. He does. But he's phenomenal. He's taught me so much about this industry. We talk a lot about rhythm, I think one of the reasons why we've worked so well is that he taught me that doing a game is equal parts two things. One, listening, and two, double Dutch. He's like, don't trip the rope. There's two going. There's two we're going and he's always just said, he's like, don't trip the rope. He's like, slide in. Get going, and then get out. And I think that's what makes the rhythm of our game good. I really do. There's that sense. He's unbelievable. For as much as all of you love Gus Johnson, I love him even more. Well, I mean, because you get to, we got to have him here in studio. What was that? Right before, right before Michigan or out of state, yeah, we sent him to the airport, I think. He was going to Columbus right after that. And he hung with us for like an hour and he was awesome. He walked on the set and then I loved that phrase. That works for us here too. Don't trip the rope. Honestly, 'cause that's what we do. We're here every day. We're chopping it up every day. Get in there. Get going. And then jump out. There are times though. When I look over and he's just looking at me and I'm like, I just tripped the rope. I got it. I got it. You want to let him down? Yeah. Joe clad here on the rich eyes and phenomenal. Again, the puzzle pieces for the draft also includes what's going on in the NFL. So we'll have the Lamar Jackson saga. Saga kind of hanging over it because you can't sign someone, let's just say a team just dared to sign him to an offer sheet or decided to finally do that. The ravens have 5 days to match. So unless somebody signs him to an offer sheet Sunday those first round picks are finished for this year. So that's not going to really happen in the middle of the first round. The Rogers jets, packers stuff, absolutely can happen on Thursday night, or even Friday night. Yeah. I mean, when we were in, we had the Josh Rosen trade happened in the middle of the second round one year after the Kyler Murray choice. That happened one year. This all things can happen. So another aspect as well, because if I'm not mistaken, the Giants ended up having, I believe it was will levison and hinden hooker in. They've had quarterbacks in. They have, which makes after the contract they gave out to Daniel Jones Daniel Jones. Well, I'll never forget the day after he was drafted. It was in Nashville. You were kind enough to come on this show. And you said that it was a huge reach, and it would set the Giants franchise back significantly and you were right till Brian Davis showed up. I mean, you'd have to say that. Yeah. You can't sit here and say that the Jones pick was working out until they just decided to finally hire the right guy who can figure out his Rubik's Cube if you don't mind. There you go. I love it. I love it. Bring it full circle. So what did you think of the Jones contract? Joel, I didn't like double down.

The Rich Eisen Show

"Didn't. Now, they do. We forget Patrick Mahomes was a project. I remember the eyebrows raising. When Andy Reid thought it was deshaun Watson on our set in Philadelphia. On the rocky steps and Andy Reid's trading up and in Philadelphia, it's clearly for deshaun Watson. That's what we all thought on the set from the octa DJ to CD referred to Charles Davis earlier. It was mahomes. Okay. And it was a project. Remember, he retreated in the pocket. No one had had success out of that offense. Could it work? We don't know. He seems like too much of a gunslinger. Yeah. What I found out about Andy Reid and anybody that had ever touched Brett Favre is that that's what they saw and Patrick Mahomes early in his career. So he was a project. Jalen hurts was a project coming out of Oklahoma. And that was the highest. Lamar Jackson, same. Josh Allen, same. I mean, all of these guys had question marks. Big question marks about what they were going to be at the next level. And they have worked out. And so I think there are teams and decision makers that are going to be much more aggressive in terms of the project than they have been in the past. Joel clad here from Fox Sports NFL network. First night and second night of draft coverage featuring Joel clad along with me and Daniel Jeremiah and Charles Davis currently right here on the rich eisen show. Which player that you saw the most? Is the best in this draft? Do you think? I think that the best gosh, well, I saw a lot of them. I think the best overall player I saw in person was well Anderson. Now, the best offensive player non quarterback that I saw was bijan Robinson. And the best quarterback I saw was Bryce young. I saw them all. I saw all these guys. Saw Tyree Wilson. In person. Saw Jackson Smith and jig bah in his really good year. Here's what I'll say about Jackson Smith and jig but it would be easy for me to give you him as an answer. We forget he was on the same team as Garrett Wilson and Chris olave and both of those guys as well as their coach, who's a great coach, Brian hartline, the wide receiver coach at Ohio State, to a man, told me, in person several times, best players Jackson Smith and jig bomb on this team. That's with Garrett Wilson on the team. You saw what he just did. You saw what Chris olave just did and there are rookie seasons. Jackson Smith and jigga is going to lead the league in receptions to one of these next few years. And we're all like, well, he missed a year. I don't care. So does Micah Parsons. So penne sewell. So there you go. I gave you like $5 and that totally makes sense and it's kind of funny because now with sniff and Smith and jig, but who's coming up in the third hour with him being there and the rest of the very talented receiving group at the Ohio State four CJ Stroud, I'm hearing you say Marvin Harrison's junior is going to be the best player in the NFL in a couple of years anyway. That's absolutely true. And by the way, that's who everyone was talking about after Stroud's pro day. Was that kid? Is there catch and passes at that pro day? He is the best college wide receiver I've ever covered. Really? Yes, no. I never saw Randy Moss in person at Marshall, right? Are any of those things? Marvin is so special. You know what's also interesting about this draft? It's a decent draft, right? I think it's a decent draft. You got your quarterbacks, good edge rushers, mystery, which is what I love as well. Good mystery. Big time. Corners, a lot of good corners, which I like. And yet, we've got several positions that if there were college players who are not eligible for this draft, if they were eligible for this draft, they would be the best players at their position. I've got four guys that I could tell you right now that I think would get picked and this year's top 7. Well, Caleb Williams is obviously Williams. Drake made from North Carolina. Yeah, yeah. The quarterback. Marvin Harrison junior and Brock Bowers at Georgia. Guys, that guy's insane Brock powers. Think about that. We got four players going back to college football that would be NFL starters next year at their respective position. And then another thing I love about this draft as well, Joel. You mentioned his name already, is bijan Robinson out there too. And supposedly running backs are not supposed to be taken high and we will be talking about no doubt in our draft coverage is that the defending world champs whose town we will be in and they won the Super Bowl with a 7th round pick leading their rushing attack and he scored in the Super Bowl at a Rutgers Isaiah Pacheco and yet this kid bijan Robinson is really, really talented and can change the fortune of an NFL team just by him being picked. I keep looking at Philly in this draft. And I'm like, why wouldn't why wouldn't you go get a guy on a first contract? Because they're all about blocking. And tackling not running through it. That's what they're about because they can run through it with miles Sanders and all you got to do is put Boston Scott against the Giants and he'll score 5 touchdowns. I think bijan is the best non quarterback offensive player in the draft. I think that if I'm sorry, does that include lineman too? Yeah, okay.

The Rich Eisen Show

"Joel clad here from Fox Sports NFL network. The headline of the first round of the draft will be what in your estimation? I have this suspicion that we're going to get three quarterbacks taken in the first three picks. Okay. I get the sense that the talk about Stroud not going to Houston is smoke. And that it's fake. Even if it's just barely out there. And once those two guys Bryce young, I think, going first and then CJ goes, I just think that there's going to be a bit of a panic from the teams that need quarterbacks and they're going to be looking at Indianapolis for and saying to themselves, we've got to jump them. So whether it's indie going up one spot or someone jumping in there at that three spot with Arizona, I think someone's going up to get Anthony Richardson. And I think that's going to be the headline of night one. Richardson is the guy. That's what you're saying. That's right. What makes you think that? Is so high. So I'm going to give you some of my stuff. So you're going to have to hear this twice. You know what? Oh my gosh, that's so fascinating. Or you know me, I'll say, I've heard that on the show. That's right. I don't mind self promoting, but have at it. Quarterbacks in the draft in some way are like Rubik's Cubes. And you've got to figure out two things about the Rubik's Cube. How good is it? Once it's figured out, right? So once it's unlocked, what is the potential? What's the ceiling? You can throw out all the cliches. And then the other part, though, and this is the more difficult part is how many turns of the Rubik's Cube is it going to take for it to become finished. More close to finish. Yes, sir. Everybody would like a Rubik's Cube that has a high ceiling. Here's the interesting part. I also believe everybody wants an unfinished Rubik's Cube. So that you can't just say like, well, this is what he is and he's got no upside. So you're just drafting a known commodity and he's never going to get better than that. You want the ability to develop a little bit, project a little bit. But not too much. This perfect sweet spot. So what is it, rich, 8, 8 turns? 9 turns, 20 turns of the cube to get it finished or polished or ready or reach its potential. Anthony Richardson, if figured out, becomes the best player on the field, and maybe any matchup. That's his upside. Now, how far away is he from that? Quite quite far. So you've got to think to yourself, am I smart enough to figure out 25 moves of a Rubik's Cube and get this guy to a point where he can be one of the best players in the NFL. It's this equation. It's this dance that the decision makers have to go on. And the reason that I like him at three right behind those guys is that his upside is so much higher than someone like, let's say, will levis, but he's going to go behind them because he's too many turns behind in terms of the Rubik's Cube. Richardson is a phenomenal player. The one thing I would say that is somewhat of a knock is that he's not consistently good. He's occasionally great, but he's not consistently good. How much of that had to do with where he was? The problem in Florida because again, that's the conversation about Richardson is the wins and losses in this past year. Of course. And of course, he's in the same conference as will love us. That's the same conference as Bryce young, saying conference as hand and hooker. And he was in fourth in that conversation, win loss was. You know, the talent can supersede some of those questions. I will say though, there were moments when you could tell the team was on his back and he was raising the level of all the boats. He was the tide. Bryce young is constantly the tide. Everybody around him has to get better. He's going to pull you down the field, score in big moments. We've seen those moments with Richardson. We've seen those moments with CJ Stroud. And for me, it's the mundane. Can you be really good with the mundane? I make this comment as well quite a bit. I think most throws for a quarterback, even at the NFL level, are on a scale of one to ten in terms of difficulties. Fours and 5s. You live in fours and 5s. So maybe some 6s, right? They're just not ultra difficult throws. Now you got to process information. You got to be on time and you've got to do those sort of things. You've got to be exceptional at four 5s and 6s. You can not miss them. You can't miss them. He misses those throws sometimes. The difference is he can go to 9 and ten where other guys can't. Also with his legs and things of that nature. And I do like your Rubik's Cube analogy very much. It was like a tester, guys. You can workshop your stuff on the rich eyes and show them with me any time. Text me, call me or show up here. But let me just add on to that. Is that part of solving a Rubik's Cube is whose hands is the key in. That's right. Because you've seen the videos, right? Like if you hand me a Rubik's Cube, it will take me 15 years to figure it out. I'm the same. You've seen the videos you can hand the Rubik's Cube to somebody from one of the four corners of the earth. They flip it three times and it's done. Yeah. So give me the hands in whose. Rubik's Cube named Anthony Richardson to be placed who can figure it out. You're saying somebody's going to trade up to three. Give me the team who you think they trade up to three with the new coach that they have or the coach they already have or the program they already have, the weapons they already have, whose hands do you think Richardson's cube would be best placed? I think that's two different answers. Okay. I think that the team that I do think the treat team that trades up is Indianapolis. I think they move up one spot. It's too easy. It's too clean. And Arizona would rather do that with Indianapolis and the reason is because they can still sit there and get will Anderson. It would be the first overall pick in the draft. That's right. For anybody that doesn't want a quarterback. And they'll pick something up. And it won't be too much. It won't be too much to give up for Indianapolis, and it won't be too much to slide down for Arizona. So I think that makes too much sense. Now, do I think that that's the best place for him? I'm not totally sure. I will say this though. In the last four and 5 years, I've been pretty opinionated about quarterbacks. If you have, and I will tell you, in the last four or 5 years, I've had to totally rethink and self assess some of that because I'm like, hold on, projects are working more now than they ever have in the NFL. It used to be let's call it old school football. Without the modern style of RPOs and college style offense is kind of infiltrating the National Football League, projects didn't work. They just

"And Mac Jones walked into that game one and two. And damn near beat Brady. And then went on a run that put New England in the tournament. Put them in the playoffs for the Super Bowl. And I watched him again here in Los Angeles, take on the Chargers, and he was the better quarterback on that day. Herbert looked lost, New England did its usual voodoo on a young quarterback and Matt Jones just was making throws, operating the offense, wisely sliding down with 6 minutes to go because they were up by two scores, situationally smart, made the Pro Bowl because enough quarterbacks, I guess, were too injured, but he was one of the first ones up as the replacement. Did the Gritty and in Vegas? Yeah. I mean, it was all working. It was barking. And ten jerseys are flying off the shelves. And then last year happened. Quick game started F and sucking. Yep. He was very vocal, very angry. Rich, you think that is anything to do with that? I don't know. I think a 100% it does. You hear all the reports from Tom Curran and everybody up in new England that Mac reached outside the building for counsel. Because the people that Bill had put in charge of his saturation, he didn't trust. And that has really pissed Bill off. And I think he's still holding on to that. You've seen it all off season. Bill is given. Many chances to say that max the guy he won't do. And he won't do it. Won't do it. Won't do it. He says he can play in this league. And now we'll love us as brought in for a visit for look see. Little diligence being due. It was due. You know what's due? You know what was due yesterday in New England? Diligence. What are you doing? I'm gonna change my DJ to name the DJ due diligence. DJ due diligence. What are we doing? DJ. You know what you're doing there at 14. Do you know what you're doing? Diligence? Guess what? You know what I'd like to do? Nope, let's take some skill guys who could put the ball in the end zone. That's what I want to do. And Mac Jones is going to get coach. What if bob, what if Bill O'Brien came in and just tells Bill, closed door meeting, you know what? You're right. This will leverage God. We saw him last year. I saw him. Bill song. Bob Sal, you're right. You know? Bill O'Brien saw him. You know, it was all about him. Hey, man, when we took, you know, when we played Kentucky last couple of years, this kid was tough. I think we just, let's just take a look at him. You know what we need to do? Diligence? And then Mac Jones, wherever he sit and he's like, what? Who is there? By the way, off season workout program. Could Mac and will ever been in the building at the same time? I don't know. That's awkward. Eating bananas without peeling it. Coffee? Weirdo. Doing weird stuff. Red flag. Okay. Might as well have this visiting the path. Because they're just. No, but also no, no, you know what Bill does too. Belichick Belichick has guys in. What if will levis suddenly the quarterback on the other side of the field this fall? And they put him on the grease board and they ask him, which plays do you think you need to improve on? Which plays your favorite play and they know that that play could be dialed up and all of a sudden there's a pick 6 and you're like, yeah, damn straight. They did their due diligence on will ever. So we got one on the board. Maybe that's what Belichick's doing and he hasn't lost it and you need to pipe down the hot seat doesn't exist. In that case, genius. That's what's a fan. It's being all about right there. That's a fan. Brilliant. Can't wait to talk about this with Joe clad, who's coming out next right here on the

"Check that just got written. Wow. Because I would think now the game three goal as the series moves back to Los Angeles, 40 points. Yep. Unless he's talking about give me 40 is age 40. I don't imagine. 40 points. 8th. You think LeBron's going to want to score 40 points, some game three? What do you think? What do you think? He's now set the geese. Likely? He set the goal, set the bar. Right there, when the Lakers take on Memphis, Saturday night. On the worldwide leader in sports, you think ESPN is going to play out this sound bot over the next couple of days. What do you think? What do you think? The fact is LeBron hasn't scored for the on them yet. So by the way, 28 and 12 on the road. Nothing to sneeze. And speaking of sneeze and rich when he says he pokes bears, he better hope that bear isn't on cocaine. There you go. Understood. Last time LeBron had 40 in the playoffs, game 5 of the MEA finals in the bubble. There you go. 2020. Okay. Goal set. I also got that bear that Leo had to deal with in the revenant. And you don't want to poke that bear. Like there's lost that game, I guess, to be noted. Here we go. I don't know. I love it. Speaking of draymond green. Draymond Brooks. He's out for tonight. He's out for tonight. And the warriors have kind of set the table in a way. They've set the table. They have to win tonight. Well, but they've set the table and what they've talked about that the calls, they're not getting the play that's a bonus, they saying that he's apparently Zach Lowe and his podcast said that the warriors are complaining that the bonus has been using the ball as a weapon. I've never heard that before. I've heard ball don't lie before. Let's see. No Scott foster sighting tonight, rich. I know you're asking about that. Yes, sir. I appreciate you. No foster tonight. No foster tonight. Okay. You know what? Here's what I'd like to do. I'd like to put a pin in this because I want to set the table for and we'll talk about this later on the program. We've got a ton of real estate on the back end. And I just wanted to just comment about Dylan Brooks comments and let them know, okay, you've written a nice check 44. That's the number for LeBron on game three. I can't wait. 45 for LeBron tonight. But Joe clutch about what Joel klots is about to walk in the door. My colleague, Ian rappaport, at the old shop, NFL network, NFL media group, he tweeted out last licks of visits for teams. Who went to go visit New England? We'll let us. Huh. What? Will levis a top 30 visit? An interesting top 30 visit is the final day on the final day teams were allowed as Ian started his tweet. Patriots hosted Kentucky quarterback will let us yesterday source says part of their due diligence to prepare for any scenario a week from now. New England picks 14th. What's the due diligence about? What's the due diligence? Well, I mean, they're kicking the tires on will love us just to see if he's better than Mac Jones, really? We're going to take the kid from Tennessee. After two years of Mac Jones, in the end of a we'll start from scratch, they're willing. Wow. This is a heck of a due diligence. Bailey zappy went to western Kentucky. Got it? Will went to so we're just trying to corner the market on Kentucky quarterback. Understood or they're just trying to call together all the Yelp restaurant reviews from the state of Kentucky. What is happening? Is that what they're trying to do? What a gigantic waste of time. Count what unless they're going to take him at 14? Yep. To do what? Play quarterback for the New England Patriots. To play quarterback for the New England Patriots and maybe flip Mac Jones to the Houston Texas? Oh, this is so exciting. To play quarterback for the New England Patriots and flip Mac Jones to who wants them. Who wants them? The Houston gamblers? What the Indianapolis Colts take on? The colds take them? What would Mac Jones get in the open market right now? Not a first rounder. So you spend a 15 on a guy two years ago to get a three back? What do you think the forty-niners are going to get back from Lance? It doesn't matter because the coach and the general manager aren't getting bounced by the owner. So, but bill's on the hot seat. So you keep saying that. You keep saying that. You keep saying that as if we have installed a thermometer on the seat that Belichick actually will be sitting in on draft night. With Nike. Here's the thing, I don't understand here, was last year so significantly disastrous or fracturing for the relationship there. That the first year we're just throwing that out. All the success he had. Winning streak. It's not just the success. It's not just the ball. It's not just the success, it's the success in light of the situation he strolled into. Mac Jones was the guy drafted in the first round. Their first first round choice at the position spent on that position since Drew Bledsoe. Mac Jones being drafted in the position where he was drafted. 15th overall. A year removed from Tom Brady's removal. Right after Brady won the Super Bowl after leaving New England. And that's what Dylan Brooks had to say. Just when you thought draymond green was the only so called villain in the playoffs. Here comes Dylan Brooks. And let's get out of Oregon. Was he this way at Oregon? I don't remember. I have no recollection of him. You remember when he played college hoops? No, Brooks. No. Yeah. Would you mind looking it up again? I shouldn't say these things when I should come prepared. Was he on the Oregon team that bounced my wolverines out of the tournament one year? I mean, you watched it right here at Staples. Oregon, Oregon was no, or was that down Anaheim? No, I was Texas tech, we took care of Michigan that year. Just another year, it was organ, as you know, made some nice runs. I just don't remember him being so brash or but I mentioned it at the all star break how so many players are just, there's no competitive spirit. We had Matt Barnes on yesterday, talking to how he loved how Chris Paul and Kawhi Leonard bumped shoulders didn't even look at each other because it's the playoffs after their son's game two win even their best of 7 series at one a piece that four 5 series that high proffer to say is going to go the distance while the nuggets will be just sitting back just kicking back, sitting in their Whirlpool. They did bounce Michigan in 2017. With Dylan Brooks, right? I mean, he was a terrific college basketball player. He's like pat 12 player of the year. I mean, I just don't remember him being so brash and so in this day and age where as Matt Barnes pointed out, everybody's just all buddy buddy that I was rooting for the Memphis Grizzlies because they're brash and they talk the talk and can they walk the walk and that's something that they're. Going to have to deal with right in checks. Will there results cash them? Well, last night they cashed the Lakers without morant and in the third quarter of this game, LeBron and Dylan Brooks start John. Timeouts called LeBron James in the middle of by the way, a 28 and 12 night on the road. And Brooks apparently was told by James, this is what Brooke said that he was dumb for having picked up his fourth foul. I guess he's given the Young Bucks some advice? Two cents highly unsolicited. This was after the game Brooks being asked, do you really want to go with the goat like that? He is kind of, you know, I'm paraphrasing here. You'll hear the actual question. All time leading scorer and stuff like that, you know? There are some people who are making that run, they get it to 14. You and LeBron have that exchange that people out there that say, maybe you shouldn't do that with one of the better players in the game. Well, I guess what school were you thinking? I don't care, he's old. You know what I mean? I was waiting for that. I was expecting him to do that game four game 5. Do you want to say something when I got my four 5? You shouldn't have seen that earlier on. But, you know, I pulled bears, I don't respect no one until they come. And give me 40. So my pride myself on what I do is defense and taking on any challenge that's on the board.

How are you mister fellow? Good to see you. So good. How are you? Good to see you. Wearing his Dodger hat, which means we might have to check it for some sticky substance. Or you might be just shutting this out like Clayton Kershaw. How are you over there, TJ Jefferson? What's going on, brother? Well, I know nothing about blue checkmarks because I'm still booted off a Twitter. One thing to say and that's free Max Scherzer. He ain't do nothing. There you go. Come on. He did nothing. Free Max Scherzer. Free Max Scherzer. Let's go. And free Mexico. Make that trend on the test. On the tweet machine. We've got some great guests. Joe clots about to join us right here on the rich eisen show. We are one week away from the draft. And Kansas City, one week away, one week from tonight I will be looking to my left. There's Joel klatt, the on him will be Charles Davis beyond him will be Daniel Jeremiah, and we'll be looking at a camera that's hopefully beaming us into your household for the NFL Draft coverage in Kansas City, Missouri 2023 style. So much to talk about with Joel and we will do that and we've got not one, but two prospects, maybe the first defensive back taken in this draft, Brian branch of Alabama crimson tide football. Jackson Smith and jig bah will be joining us on this program. He went to the Ohio State university. Will he be the first wide receiver taken? I believe that will happen. A lot of mock drafts are pegging him to be a Tennessee Titan at 11. Oh. If they don't take a quarterback, Jackson Smith and jiggle will be joining us in our number three of this program. Hall of Famer Joe Carter will talk to him about Max Scherzer getting the gate here in Los Angeles for sticky substances. I don't even know what that is. Joe will be joining us on this program. I wonder where the baseball is that he had out of the park to wrap up the World Series. Does he have it? What do you think? Great question. I can't believe that was, it wasn't like a towering shot. It was more of a line drive that probably went in the bullpen. I don't know. I wonder I'm wondering where it went. Never hit a bigger home run in your life. Touch them all, Joe Carter. And I imagine he must have a good Rickey Henderson story, right? Rich Joe not in the Hall of Fame, just a two time champion. Hell is that possible? I don't get it. Did I call him Hall of Famer Joe Carter? He did. That's okay. Well, he should be. Honestly, he's not in the hall. He is not. Go figure that. So headline out of last night's NBA playoffs. Headline is LeBron James old. LeBron James? That's one of them. He's old. How old is he exactly? Well, look, in the athlete terms. He is technically old. I mean, he's 38 years old. That's old. For a guy to be. Old

"Yes they're big and they're physical up there and it's a big reason why think they're going to be a successful again this year. No it's interesting talking about the transfer portal chips. Got the bag a couple of times from nfl team. So he's got plenty of money in you can see him on his bike in manhattan beach. He's living the good life right. And i and i think and this is not a criticism of him some coaches. I don't know if he feels a kinship to high school recruiting. I don't think he loves it but the transfer portals different you get more mature players It's more of administrative than recruiting. Can we get them in right. And a lot of these players that leave southern california because sc and ucla down. They go to the south. They go to another program the big ten. And they're like like here and they circle back and reach out back to sc and ucla. He got six six transfer portal players. And i think five started. And i just i saw. Ucla basketball do this where they lost a great player to kentucky. The kids like i'm not into this. I miss my friends. Goes back the transfer portal. I liken it to a much higher in junior college without the whiffs because you know the guys can play. And i do think. I don't academic issues a lot. Joe i looked at those ucla transfers. And i'm like oh that they've made the running backs. That's the difference in that program. So i i'm not. I don't wanna get over my skis here. But i think you know. Chips a little contrarian as a personality he is not stor peers. And i kinda think he just he needs patience and i think it's gonna work for him. Hey so. I don't think it's just chip. You're talking about the transfer portal. This people are using this really well and things that All the coaches that. I talk with you know getting ready. We did those two games and ohio. State doesn't really have to deal with the transfer or is there you know it's it's more so they're leftovers are where everyone else goes right to to grasp through grab people but all these other programs in minnesota had niles a picnic. He was a captain for clemson. He comes in and he's a defensive tackle at minnesota. Another clemson get jazz. Mullins as a running back for wisconsin in my game. I came out there..

"Klatt voice of college football fox. You know i wanna zone in on. Ucla's winner for lsu and and i remember How disappointed at orange. Ron was when he was overlooked at usc. I had said at the time. I talked to a usc administrator. And they had said we just don't know if he fits for five years. I've always thought of him as an elite position coach. A good coordinator. But i don't view him as a top ten program head coach long-term although i do think it shows the the town of joe borough joe berle made a lot of people's jobs ways eared lsu. But when i watched that game we know. lsu has probably more five star talent than ucla. Ucla has been maybe v six in pac. Twelve recruiting so far for kelly. When you watch that game. I mean i was really taken back no ucla. I think had ten seniors on defense. It's an twenty two twenty three year old kids. But i was really taken back. By the line of scrimmage that i thought ucla on consistently one and it's not for lack of talent at lsu that big bodies everywhere. That's what jumped out to me. Is that the schematics of chip is at the age. The returning starters. What did you make of the line of scrimmage in that game or ucla. Control the biggest difference for ucla. Any years you know and and ship has been doing this now. This you know we talk about some guys are like oh they got to come in and build a program. We all want it to happen quicker than it really can in particular when you're taking over program like ucla at the point in which she took it over and if quickly he had to tear a lot of things down in order to rebuild them at ucla. And i think you know what i'm talking about your pets enough gibb. You and i have had those long conversation with chip. And i don't want to get into the details. But there were times early in his tenure there where they had fifty six fifty seven. Scholarship players announce his choice. It was a sanctions. It was it was him kind of tearing down the program in order to rebuild it in the fashion in which he needed to want him. Okay in a lot of that was cultural. In terms of the culture he wanted to implement and bill A lot of it was chemistry style of things but then a lot of it also was like this style of player that he wanted in the in the style of.

"Tell you a lot by their opening series. They tell you what they see on film. We can't run on san jose state well and they tell you what they desire their identity to be. That's their entire offseason. Desire on tape is their her first series or two offense or defense. This is who we think we are. Is we wanna be. That's what you get okay. Finally you were very outspoken. The world agreed with you If i got a parking ticket. I shouldn't get thrown in jail too little too punitive for the action. I'm watching two three times every saturday. Football as you pointed out it's fast. There's a regulated level of violence. I'm watching guys. Get thrown out of football games. This targeting i just don't get it. There's no context to any of these penalties right. Not only that. So yes you're a thousand percent right about the contests trying to measure intent. You know how. I said it on the broadcast. And i know that it's impossible. To measure or view or to officiate intent. Apart of the other problem with this is that this is the most punitive penalty in our sort. The only other thing that is as punitive is literally fist fighting on the field. But that's the only other thing that will just issue like an auto each and and the problem. I have with it is it is officiated as iraq medically as any coal in the sport you you can put up two different clips and everybody in the room disagreeing about both lips like the there's no consensus about even how to officiate it. So how in the world that we take something that is erotic in its ability to be implemented and attach the malls punitive action. You can take against a player to that said. Italy doesn't make any sense that is insane to do. And the problem is is that these commissioners have no appetite to change it or to try to bullet back towards something that is much more palatable for the college football fan because they don't want to be seen as being weak on safety measures. Okay but it's it's it's garbage. Let me tell you why if they were really if they were really serious about player safety and not just for Protecting themselves from a legislative sampler not legislate from a litigation standpoint would address the college game clock rules in which we stopped the clock all the time during the course of the game which leads to a higher volume of overall snap. Yep dead in the nfl. Yep okay so you following me here. If you were really in in the mold of saying you wanted to reduce the occurrence of head injuries or help with player the you would adopt the nfl. Game clock was and you would limit the number of of volume of snaps and in some cases you would limit it a about a hundred for the season which is basically an entire game so this is what this is what drives me nuts as they sit there and like we're so serious about player safety. No you're not. no you're not all you're doing is protecting yourself relitigate a litigation standpoint in a concussion standpoint. Not doing that. When it comes to the volume of of snaps the players are having is that you haven't even addressed the kickoff issue. The xfl at least tried to address the kicked off. And i thought how much that ruling what's in football right now. So they won't look at that but we're going to continue to eject players again to sum this up. I am absolutely fine. With both categories of targeting adding ability thrown and flag. Now and i'm fine with awarding first downs fifteen yards. I'm even fine with having two levels of targeting or if you can judge some sort of malice or intent in terms of using your ed as a weapon then you can object but the fact is that when we're having normal course of football plays end in j- action of football player. That's like i said that's a regis. It's a disgrace and it needs to be changed around. You gotta go to your stuff. It's a holiday weekend. I never do these. But i was so giddy with all these games. I couldn't control myself. And i'm like okay. I gotta talk about the stuff. I'm of the scene at wisconsin. I know there were several out. There i want know field was agree. Scene of what. I wanna talk about the games. That i watched so watched georgia clemson. I watched alabama. I watch ucla lsu. I watched ohio state. I wash. usc and I'm always very critical when a coach's side of the ball struggles klay health than offensive guy for six years. They can't run on first and second down. They don't use the tight end. They become insanely one receiver. Dominant drake london had like thirteen catches. I think And i don't think outside of the bubble screen. They have run two screens and a game in clay hilton's tenure and the defensive side with todd orlando. The former texas coat is fine they. He's an aggressive coach. They run around. In fact dante williams who they got from oregon has really upgraded the secondary town. Us's corners are really nice player. Sunday players. But i look at that offense joel six years. They can't run the football in. I talked to a friend in the pac twelve. He said you're on the air raid. What elliott offensive. Lineman wants to go back for the air raid. Is it just that simple. And and it's a pretty pure air raid. You know there's so many different spin offs. And i call it like a. I don't know what the analogy is. That this is a pure form of eric As about as close to leeches you can get in. That offense as successful as mike has been is still never wanted division championship and the part of the problem is is. Because there's there's no with to it and i'm not talking about just like with is as far as the field goes with it is it is a verse. Versatility might be bigger or a better term. There's still an element of this where you've got to control the clock at times you've got to win the linux scrimmage and control the edge on short yardage you have to have that at least in your toolbox and they just don't even care if it's in their toolbox or not and i think it's really frustrating fans. I was frustrated at. I did back to back games last year. I did their opener against you. Ended their second game against you'll obey and i can remember. I know who you do their first game and they struggled on short yardage. Because let me get technical for a moment. the don't go under center. Which is fine. There are teams that don't go under center even shahryar but the teams that don't go under center in the shore yardage they control the edge. The edge player with a read or motion. Or even some of the comes wassim. When you just sit there and snap the ball and then hand it to a back. And don't control the inmate. On the line of scrimmage he's just gonna crash down and make the tackle in the short yardage so they don't read it with the quarterback they don't do anything is why is they have no whit to there one game and again. I'm not talking about space. i'm just talking about. They've got such view number of concepts and ability to do different things that they can't. It's not in their toolbox. And i finally howling lost it during the game against avails like. You can't do this. This this is insane. It seems and i know this is a very hard knock against them. But they've got to be better than that as coaches period. I asked him about it between the games in our coaches meeting. Sounds like well. Have you thought about going under center. I'd wanna control the edge counter like while it's just not what we do. What do you mean like a carpenter. Doesn't have a a a measuring tape like algae don't measure. I don't understand so. I know that that's a that is a scathing review but it's true and it's one of the reasons why i think. Ucla is gonna be the better team in la. I totally israel because they have more physicality than they have more ability. You know if you take something away. That's their bread and butter to go in a different direction of you. Take away their passing game at usc. They've got nothing else to lean on because they don't have the creative screens they don't have the run and the essence of that was last year wall championship though just wrecks their passing game in. That could be. Now's it klay hilton. Ice guy but He's a very loaded coach and Yesterday prime example against san jose state the score is not indicative of the game. It was thirteen seven. Their defense rail them out that this this basically tells you all you need to know about usc. In the current state they open the game passing to open up their running against san jose state. They have so little confidence in their ability. They do not have sixteen or seventeen offensive lineman in the program. They do not have a single. Nfl prospect in their upper-class group junior senior not one andrew or he's is probably an undrafted free agent they do not have. They don't have any so their best offensive. Lineman are like redshirt freshman a- cortlandt ford left tackle in mannheim at right tackle. It's in a. I tried to tell. Us fans they. They are okay in the weakest five year. Stretch of the pack twelve of my adult life and they're still not dominating. This is as bad as it gets. So it's like. There have been times in my life when you terry donahue and don james and john robins i mean you you add like hall of fame coaches say. Six of these guys in this conference probably aren't going to last so i i just watched them yesterday and i thought it's rinse and repeat. I don't think you're harsh. I coaches.

"Flying or it was. It was impressive. So i think what you saw is similar to what you saw last year. When ohio state all sudden ran up against alabama. It's a really great program that ran up to a program that was just at a different level that year. I think george is at just a little bit different level this year but having said that george is gonna have to figure out some things on the offensive side and i think you saw listen. Clemson's defense was insanely good defensive. Front seven is loaded. But they're going to struggle on offensive line most of the year the year the other call. Here's the other problem okay. So we saw clemson's weakness who in the acc is threatening clemson even with without weakness that we saw. Well i would say notre dame plays five games in the acc. That's the closest match up to me because their offensive line keeps him in every game. Their offensive line has given georgia. They've gone toe to toe with georgia to the last time they've met those games. Were really competitive games. Notre dame's o. Line they're not gonna but they don't play clemson. But that's the only thing like i watched notre dame and clemson i i see. Nfl people upfront. Especially on notre dame offensive line. If you can't block clemson georgia alabama ohio state defensive lines. You can't beat them you i remember. I remember pete carroll telling me this one time he went four no against the. Sec is the key is we can block their fronts. We got four nfl guy. He goes in washington. Don james would have four. Nfl guys in the nfl tight end. We could block their fronts out west. That's our problem. We cannot block an sec. Front or in ohio state front. We don't have we don't have. The bodies are receivers and quarterbacks and corners and life. We're fine there. But when i look at notre dame and they play. We're going to release this podcast before they play. But when i watched notre dame and let's pivot to that. I think what. Brian kelly figured out. You told me this. He figured out about two years ago. This is not a track meet. We can't run. We're not gonna run with some of these schools but we can get in their kitchen. Alto taste something. When i watched notre dame play take alabama out. I think they match up with everybody. I think they'll beat florida state than i think they match up with everybody. That's my opinion. Okay so i have this theory. And i'm sure. So you know i think notre dame people might not love it because they've got such a rich history which they do. There's there's no doubt. I have this theory that only one of the like really really tough back in the neck institutions can be great at a time right interesting Maybe i'm totally wrong. But you know. I think it's really difficult for stanford and notre dame to both be great because they're they have to get the exact same layer interesting by the way. And we've seen in ascension for notre dame last three to four years and erosion at stanford. That's exactly right. And that's exactly what i was getting to is the fact that this notre dame while not not identical to what stanford was doing it is similar in that when stanford was really good under our bond shah. They can bully everybody upfront. They could run the ball on anybody. That would have a good back. They could play toughened stout on defense. They can have a few guys here and there. That could run. You know they didn't have to have a whole stable guys. Could run all over the place. They would have really tied in but it was just a a factory of nfl offense lineman nfl offense lineman nfl often sublime now doesn't have that they're pitching the ball around got absolutely hammered by kansas state. All those players back at notre dame now is it's a nfl offensive lineman factory. When i talk with scouts and executives on in draft mode in the spring they say you go to notre dame in. It's just different in their offensive line room the way that they coach him the way that they develop these guys are surefire players in the nfl. Because they come from notre dame And i think that's what he kind of figured out. And i don't know if you figured it out as much as it just took a little time to develop to that point and then now here there are and they've got enough on the outside where they're really seemed. I i think noting better than people think i think. Comb as weird as this might sound. Maybe a touch of an upgrade ovarian book i think at arms climbers last full season. We saw jack on. He was the big ten's leading efficiency or is is not a slouch and so like this could be some this year. I think notre actually exceeds expectations. I certainly think that they'll threaten and potentially went ten games again. I do too it. Notre dame is a topic of many of my discussions. What do you think about that. Do you think stanford notre dame can be great at the same time i don't. I don't think there's enough great students that are also great football. Well also might be totally wrong. Northwestern's gonna appeal off some. So then you've got three because northwestern zabol program so stanford northwestern and notre dame it's just simply more difficult not only academically but socially the workload that notre dame stanford northwestern ask of their student athletes. It's just harder. And i. And i think there's probably in the country probably about twenty to twenty five really blue chip kids that can handle that workload. This is not a shot at other fine institutions wisconsin's a great academic power But but i do think stanford i've talked. I know multiple guys who have played at notre dame a dozen and they're like man like the workload is no bullshit. This is a real work. Laura you you're now you have to go to class and it's hard if you go to class and so i think there's a listen. I'm mr theory. I got a theory and everything. I'd never thought about that. I think it's one of your gems not gonna lie. I like it okay. This episode of stuffy missed in history class is brought to you by stem and root.
