"Nearly 25 years and Congress and during his tenure, he served as the House minority leader and the House majority leader before being elected speaker in 2011. Now in his new book on the House, a Washington memoir. This is a colorful reflection on his years of public service and the president's and the politicians that he encountered along the way, both in Washington, D C and on. Numerous golf courses. And now without further ado, allow me to welcome to the Commonwealth Club Speaker John Boehner. Well, Melissa, thank you and good afternoon to you and to all over Tunisia. I'm looking forward to, uh, this discussion today. You know, I, uh, writing books was dying by books, not what I do. But over the years after I retired, I thought, you know, I've been a pretty interesting life. Very interesting career. I think, uh, I think I could write a book to be pretty interesting. And so what? It's not about doing it and finally out finished on, Uh, here we are. That's so well that Melissa fire away Well, so I looked at some of the reviews. Your book's doing very well. It's been reviewed and sort of all the fancy publications and the one that I thought I did. A really good job of sort of summarizing was from the L A times where they wrote Quote Reading. John Boehner's political memoir is probably a lot like just sitting down next to an old timer at the bar where he used to work growing up in Ohio. There's a lot of talk about the way Things used to be. And before you know it, you have had one too many. And you're not sure just how you're going to get home. So it is a very conversational book. Right? It is that was that when you set out to do it really feels like you're sitting with someone. Just telling his stories. Can you talk about your process and what you meant to do here? Well, well, I was attempting to do was one to be me on. You know, I'm known for being camp it Sometimes we have funny. Being straightforward on by one of the book to sound like me. Trust me. It sounds like may be interesting. I brother enough political memoirs and my Life on realized I did not want to write a book by all those other ones that have bred and so I wanted to be. Oh, I wanted it to sound conversational. I really did not want to have to record my audiobook. I was just a lot of work now. I just I'm really don't wanna do it, But my friends and my staff has beat on me to no end. Found. Uh And so it was that was really hard to do, but it's the same thing there. I wanted it to sound like I was having a conversation with the person listening. Don't all worked out. Fine. Thankfully. Yeah. I mean it. Really It really is. It's a very I found myself, you know. Finishing it far too early. I'd set aside a certain amount of time I flew right through because it's just it just moves along so well and a number of her stories sort of take place on golf courses, of course, and especially with a certain former senator Joe Biden. And you, you talk pretty pretty positively about President Biden and about your friendship with him. You talk a little bit about that. And how do you think he's doing as president? Well, listen, Joe Biden did. I have been friends for 30 years? He's a traditional Democrat. I would describe myself as a traditional Republican. But, you know, we're both Roman Catholic broth grew up and kind of the same guys. Circumstances on. I don't know. Well, we seem to understand the trouble. On During the five years of his finger. He was vice president. On. There were a number of times that on behalf the Biden Obama administration, Hey, step in and be the negotiator between the White House and the Congress. So we have two more times that we give stand with each other. But you know, every year or sometimes twice here, there'll be a joint session of Congress where the president would speak. And Joe Biden, This president of the Senate would join me on the diets and we set behind President Obama. So you know, While we're waiting for the festivities to start on the president finally be introduced. We spend ample time upon the diets by ourselves. I think one year I was 2011 or 2012. I was talking to him about the golf game. I played the previous summer right shot. It's not even part. It's got a problem, and I was stolen Joel Bella, and finally my staff came running over. To say it's all alive. And here, the president's might. His microphone was picking up our entire conversation. Thank goodness we were talking about gods, and they feel like that's what you guys were talking about that a lot of other things, but it was. Just go. Well, if it's great that you you talked about what it's like to be the speaker and just sit You have to sit there without Moving a single muscle while the president gives a speech. It's the president tonight on anything I would have done. What have got me in trouble. And so I decided early on. I wasn't I'd see another speaker, sit up there and do things that they shouldn't have done. On got extortion, aided by the press over it, And so I I decided I'm just gonna stare in the back of President Obama's head and not make one facial expression. The only thing that was ever reported about me in the state of the union was that some reporters suggested I looked bored, but weren't you though? A little bit. I want to go the hell are you talking about? I want to do a million things wrong. My writing done a million things, but I didn't do any of them. I just sat there and behave myself. I always wondered what it goes through the mind of the people have to sit there on camera for three and sort of endure the speech you write about President Clinton and Obama and you both sort of and you say about both of them it in different ways that they had run a samad aerate or sort of as a sort of post partisan President, and then you sort of tact left when they got into office. Um, for Bill Clinton. It was with e. You know, the health care? Well, actually, both of them. It was really health care reform. Um, How is is Joe Biden falling into that same pattern? Or do you think he's um He's sticking with what he what he ran on..

"Allie, lesson say, hey Allie. Hello. How you doing doing? All right doing. All right. Trying to stay warm. I know. Oh my gosh. I'm to tap primarily because by families here and I love it here. But I moved for the woma Weber were out of luck free Zing really, really cold. And you know what Bella because for those of you who didn't know my, a beautiful dog Sadie she post away less February, and, but I adopted the senior dog and her name is Bella boo by she is a Shitsu mix. And we've had her four I think a couple of months now and she doesn't care about. She doesn't. She doesn't mind if it's hot outside, if it's cold outside. She's an outside dog. She's Belarus out jasmine, does not want to know she will go out and do putty out there. And then she will come straight back in. And if I do try even take her out because I want to take out and give exercise. I put on a little pink coat and it's not because the pink coat that she wants to come back inside because she's the same, if I put the pink code, but it put the pink Khotan as she goes walking. And then she won't choose she holds his up. She looks like a little old, lady, and looks main turns around says, for the love of goodness. Can we please go home? Your husband or show me a video of her in the snow, and she couldn't decide which pod not to put down. Yeah. Not want to be he didn't tie and most of the time, we, she was snuggled in my jacket. But I mean, you know, come on. She's a I know she's a Chihuahua and two was incredibly emotional dogs, right. And you could absolutely see that feelings on just they weather hot on that poll. Right. They are just they are emotional ducks. But she does she as a bit dramatic. I think they're all some dogs like people that can be a bit more traumatic sorry I just thought I thought she was a mere cat this whole time. She is America. She not wa wa wa L she's serious. His new revelation. Just go on my site, and you'll see a picture of jasmine. She is a Chihuahua mix. We think she's been mixed by with America because she looked she's gonna America face. She does she's has the smear cat. She's a really interesting very bizarre dog, but I do think she's, she's a little traumatic and yeah, she is a bit dramatic. And when she's outside, she doesn't like something she will really show you. Okay. Maybe he's like of she will really show you, so, I have to find ways to enrich her life indoors. Which brings us to if you are in a part of the country added is freezing cold, and you can only take dogs out for a little bit. What do you do inside the home of what can you do to enrich, the lives, I have some ideas you do? 'cause you a great this, and this is where can I dedicate this to my cousins who are in Iowa? Listen to this, and Sioux City, Iowa. Okay. I'm complaining too much contact. I bet it's like. Minus minus minus its increase over Anka ni. I wa and then we have Rochester, Minnesota bless their hearts, and my others are going up to I believe it's Mitchell, South Dakota. So we're talking. I mean feet of snow just snow forever, and they still get out sometimes. But usually in December January they have to the dogs have to stay indoors. And they have golden retrievers, they've got doodles. I mean, what, what do you can't put our booties that you can put on your dog, and the people do adults booties, which is very important because when it is so, so, cold dangerously cold like that you have to protect those polls. Okay. But what could you do in places like this to enrich? You'll duck ready for crazy idea yet. Okay. I once like crazy. Indoor park core. Okay. Is all about indoor part. Okay. So as a certified canine, fitness trainer, yes, that's a real thing, I love to do some fitness, and it doesn't have to be crazy doesn't have to be so regimented. But what I'm talking about here is if you do allow your dog on the furniture. So again, we we're we're not turning into romper room is my dad would say, but we can use. We can take some treats, and we can lure your dog into different positions. And it sounds a little lame, but it can be cool. Can your dog just put to pas up on the couch? What about the back paws up on the couch on the couch off the couch on the bed off the bed, can they sit down stand or spin on these different surfaces? Do you have an Ottoman turning your living room into a little bit of a dog park in an organized way? So we're not just saying we get the zoom. He's all over the place. But if you wanna go downstairs to the basement and do this. You have one specific room. This is something we can do to implement a little bit of fitness. You can ask your dog to do these things repetitively, if you ask your dog to sit and, and then. Get them into a stand, or toss a treat. So they get back from this, it ten times in a row that is tiring and your dog has to work and engage their brain it engages their muscles. And you'll be surprised how difficult that is. I see so many puppies in group classes by the end of class, they won't sit anymore. And people think, oh my gosh. We've just been working on this behavior for so long. Why won't you sit? It's because the puppies tired, his little muscles are tired. So if you have a big dog, if you've got a really athletic dog, you can do multiple sets and reps of these sits down and transitions. But that's the crazy. Okay. So what about people who say, on my dog suppose, on my so far? I don't want them to learn how to get up on my sofa. What are you saying that we could we can make arrangements, but I allow my dog on the bed on the couch? You know, he's not gonna come the boss. He's not going to do all these things. He he's going to go to. I told I thought that window are on the bed or on the sofa. They suddenly become top Doke. No looking for the comfy a spot there, and why I say it as a fitness trainer is because we're looking for an uneven surface because it makes it more difficult. Can we do this on the flat floor? Of course, we can we probably wanna use a rug or carpet, or a matter of some kind because we don't want the dog to slip on the hardwood, if we're asking him for these different positions, but it's something that we can do on the bed. Or if you don't want your dog up on the better on the couch. You can use cushions or just a towel or something else to do these different positions. Say fitness isn't your thing? Or maybe you have mismatch Bella if Bella, I don't fitness may be her strong suit, she's not the most agile of because. Buddy so long. Looks like one of these in toys stories, you said it was a use slinky the dachshund is, so I think she looks like a dandy demain on she. She does she she's, or she could be put Basset hound. I don't know. She is the most bizarre dock, and we always say that if you to five year old child to draw a dog, they would Joel Bella, and then the teacher would go all. That's very sweet. Doesn't it like adult with has very sweet because all the proportions a completely out of proportion, and that's better. She's gotten incredibly low neck, a very old face an incredibly long back tiny, stubby legs. And I love her I love her. And if she don't says, I at Somma a site. They pick up front hooves, whenever I come front front legs. I should say whenever I come. I've been out and I come back and she's so excited to see me. She don't says, it's the Benhamou dunce from one one to another to. Yeah, I'm thinking more Shetland pony. Okay. Okay. Shetland pony. Okay. Then what what's Klaus then my dog senior? That's just Claus is his poodle who is if, if that could be the three musketeers writing the full musketeer. He would he's very dandy. And he's, he's such a bizarre dog and such a justed adorable. His he could be the most interesting boyfriend. Thank you. And he's got an accent hasn't. He has. He's okay. So what is it much time? So excited to be training today. Oh. Feel like he's on her in the stable that puts Braves in his hair, and he wants some certain way and all the other Lipizzaners look at him. Like, yeah, that's. Yeah, that's perfect. That's a perfect explanation because he is quite Basell, but he's just the most ISA smug dog, and I love the relationship, you have with him is very organic relationship. Yes, you do. A lot of work with do training with him. But you also an in a future, Pokemon. I wanna talk about this. You also apart from giving him a lot of choice. You also training him to kind of all skew or let you know, when he wants things. But also tell you whether he wants to do something or he doesn't we all going to talk about that in a future Pokemon was. I think that's kind of wet training is going teaching is going. See us training. And we do a lot of concept trading. But let me tell you about the clauses first Christmas, the clauses for Christmas. We drove him. Thank you, mother and dad. I love you so much. Drove him to Iowa from Georgia because I didn't wanna be apart from him on Christmas. Oh, my we go into the house, and there's there are, what was it sixteen people golden retriever and things not to do Christmas do, but we used management, we had baby gets up and Claus really lived downstairs. Luckily, it was a nice big, beautiful home Klaus downstairs. But how did I in Richard in this place because we were up on a bluff? We got snowed in. So what did we do? Well, one thing that clauses really good at is hide and seek love it. You could bring super simple. So let's talk about classes version. It's advanced smart dog. I'm a standard poodle version that is where I can take a ball, his favorite squishy ball yet, and I can hide it pretty much anywhere in a room and over time. I've kind of taught him. What's inbounds? And what's not inbound. But I can put it pretty much anywhere in that room. And all tell him to go to go to his bed in a different room. I'll ask them to wait. I hide the ball and come back and release him say, okay seek, and he gets to go find that ball. He will search Victoria for ten minutes. He will search so Victoria. How do we teach dogs to do this? Maybe they can't do the advanced version quite yet. Yeah. We'll find something that you dog really likes if you talk is not a toy motivated, you could try getting come toy, for example, and putting some of yolks favorite food in on how I stop this game is that I will place the toy in an area where the dough could really see it. So I'll make a big fuss of placing it may be behind the, the challenge will something. And then I go back to my dog and say seek go seek..

But also tell you whether he wants to do something or he doesn't, and we are going to talk about that in a future Pokemon was. I think that's kind of wed training, going teaching is going. See us trading. And we do a lot of concept training. But let me tell you about this classes first Christmas so clauses. First Christmas, we drove him. Thank you, mother and dad. I love you so much. Drove him to Iowa from Georgia because I didn't want to be apart from him on Christmas. Oh, my we go into the house, and there's there are, what was it sixteen people golden retriever and things knelt to do Christmas, too. But we used management baby gates up and Claus really lived downstairs. Luckily, it was a nice big beautiful home class downstairs. I'll ask them to wait like hide the ball. And I come back and release him say, okay seek, and he gets to go find that ball. He will search Victoria for ten minutes. He will search so Victoria. How do we teach dogs to do this? Maybe they can't do the advanced version quite yet. Yeah, we'll find something that you really likes if you talk is not a twin motivated to, you could try getting come toy, for example, and putting some of your Dokes favorite food..

"Hello, everybody. Welcome to this, positively pus Victoria, still up yet with my wonderful colleague, eilly lessons say, hey, Allie live Lou how you doing doing? All right. Do not trying to stay warm. I know. Oh my gosh. I'm moved to Atlanta primarily because of by husband's family's here and I love it here. But I moved to the woma Weber, you're out of luck free Zing. Really, really cold. And you know what Bella because for those of you who didn't know my a beautiful Doke Sadie she post away February, and, but I don't to the senior dog and her name is Bella, boo Bala. She is a Shitsu mix, and we've had her four I think a couple of months now and she doesn't care about she doesn't cut. She doesn't mind if it's hot outside, if it's cold outside. She's an outside dog, she's Bella booze out. Jasmine does. Not want to know she will go out and do putty out there, and then she will come straight back in. And if I do try even take her out because I want to take out, give exercise. I've put on a little pink coat and it's not because the pink coat that she wants to come back inside because she's the same, if I don't put the pink code, but I put the pink Khotan and she goes walking, and then she won't choose. She holds his up. She looks like a little old, lady, and looks semaine turns rather says for the love of goodness. Can we pool leave go home? Your husband just show me video her in the snow. And she couldn't decide which pod not to put down. Yeah. Not want to be in it didn't know Taibbi. And most of the time, we she will snuggled in my jacket. But I mean you know, come on the, she's a I know she's a Chihuahua and two was incredibly emotional Dokes. Right. And you could absolutely see feelings on just they weather hot on that poll. Right. They are just they are emotional ducks. But she does she as a bit dramatic. I think all some dogs like people that can be a bit more traumatic sorry. I just thought I thought she was a mere cat this whole time. She is. She not wa wa wa she is serious news. Revelation news today. Just go on my site, and you'll see a picture of jasmine. She is a Chihuahua mix. We think she's been mixed by with America because she looked she's gonna America face. She does she's has the smear cat. She's just really interesting. Very bizarre dog. But I do think she's, she's a little traumatic and yeah, she is a bitch Matic. And when she's outside, she doesn't like something she will really show you. Okay. Maybe he's like of she will really show you. So I have to find ways to enrich life indoors. Which brings us to if you are in a part of the country added is freezing cold, and you can only take your dogs out for a little bit. What do you do? Do inside the home of will can you do to enrich, the lives? I have some ideas fellow. I know you do 'cause you a great this, and this is for can I dedicate this to my cousins who are in Iowa? Listen to this they and Sioux City Iowa. Okay. I'm complaining too much contact. I bet it's like minus minus. It's so Anka ni I wa, and then we have Rochester, Minnesota bless their hearts and my others. They're going up to I believe it's Mitchell, South Dakota. So we're talking. I mean feet of snow just snow forever, and they still get out sometimes. But usually in December January they have to the dogs have to stay indoors. And they have golden retrievers, they've got doodles. I mean, what, what do you can't put our booties that you can put on your dog, and the people do to Dokes booties, which is very important because when it is so, so cold dangerously cold like that. You have to protect those pools. Okay. But what can you do? Do in places like this to enrich you'll duck ready for crazy idea yet. Okay. I once create days too. Crazy. No indoor park hor. Okay. This is all about indoor part hor. Okay. So as a certified canine, fitness trainer, yes, that's a real thing. I love to do some fitness and it doesn't have to be crazy doesn't have to be so regimented. But what I'm talking about here is if you do allow your dog on the furniture. So again, we we're we're not turning into romper room as my dad would say, but we can use. We can take some treats, and we can lure your dog into different positions. And I know it sounds a little lame, but can be cool. Can your dog just put two pas up on the couch? What about the back paws up on the couch on the couch off the couch on the bed off the bed? Can they sit down stand or spin on these different surfaces? Do you have an Ottoman kind of turning your living room into a little bit of a dog park in an organized way? So we're not just saying we get Zuma's all over the place. But if you wanna go downstairs to the basement and do this. You have one specific room. This is something we can do to implement a little bit of fitness. You can ask your dog to do these things repetitively. If you ask your dog to sit and. And then get them to a stand or toss a treat. So they get back from this, it ten times in a row that is tiring and your dog has to work and engages their brain it engages their muscles, and you'll be surprised how difficult that is. I see so many puppies in group classes by the end of the class, they won't sit anymore. And people think, oh my gosh. We've just been working on this behavior for so long. Why won't you sit? It's because the puppies tired. Yeah. His little muscles are tired. So if you have a big dog, if you got a really athle- dog, you can do multiple sets and reps of these sits down and transitions. But that's the crazy. Okay. So what about people who say, on all my suppose, on my so far? I don't want them to learn how to get up on my sofa. What are you saying Allie, I say that we could we can make arrangements, but I allow my dog on the bed and on the couch. And now he's not gonna come the boss. He's not going to do all these things. He he's going to go to I, I thought that would dogs. They're on the bed or on the sofa. They suddenly become took no looking for. The comfy a spot there. And why I say it is a fitness trainer is because we're looking for an uneven surface because it makes it more difficult. Can we do this on the flat floor? Of course. Can we probably wanna use a rug or carpet, or a matter of some kind because we don't want the dog to slip on the hardwood? We're asking him for these different positions. But it is something that we can do on the bed. Or if you don't want your dog up on the better on the couch. You can use some cushions, or a towel or something else to do these different positions. Say fitness isn't your thing? Or maybe you have misspell if Bella, I don't fitness be her strong suit, she's not the most agile of because hope buddy so long. She looks like one of these into a stories. You said it was a USA. Does Linke the dachshund is so are they she looks like a dandy demain on? She says she does she she's or she could be put Basset hound. I don't know. She is the most bizarre. And we always say that if you two five year old child drew, a dog, they would Joel Bella, and then the teacher would go all that space. Doesn't it like a dope has very sweet because all the proportions are completely out of proportion, and that's better? He's gotten incredibly low neck, a very old face an incredibly long back tiny stubby legs. And I love her. I love her. And she don't says, like lipid Saana a, you know, they pick up front hooves, whenever I come front front legs. I should say whenever I come I have been out and I come back and she's so excited to see me. She don't says, it's the Benhamou dolts but from one one to another to. Yeah. I'm thinking more Shetland pony lip. It's okay. Shetland pony benefit Zona, okay? Then what Klaus then my dog senior. That's just plus is his poodle. Who is if, if there could be, you know, the three musketeers writing the full musketeer would be he would. He's very dandy. And he's, he's such a bizarre Doke at such a justed adorable. He's like he could be the most interesting voi- friend. Thank you. And he's got an accent hasn't he has his. Okay. So what is it much time? So excited to be training today. Oh, now you've done a Vic, I'll be like he's the on her in the stable that puts Braves in his hair, and he wants some certain way and all the other Lipizzaners look at him. Like, yeah, that's. Yeah, that's perfect. That's a perfect the because he is quite Basell, but he's just the most seizes smug. Dog and I love the relationship, you have with him is very organic relationship. Yes, you do a lot of work with do training with him. But you also not an in a future, Pokemon. I wanna talk about this, you also apart from giving him a little choice. You also training him to kind of all skew or let you know, when he wants things. But also tell you whether he wants to do something, or he doesn't we all going to talk about that in a future, Pokemon was, I think that's kind of wet training is going teaching is going. See us trading. And we do a lot of concentrating. But let me tell you about this f- clauses. First Christmas, the clauses for Christmas. We drove him. Thank you, mother and dad. I love you so much. Drove him to Iowa from Georgia because I didn't want to be apart from him on Christmas. Is Dan did poodle who is if if there could be, you know, the three musketeers writing could beat the full musketeer would be he would be. He's very dandy, and he's he's such a bizarre dog and such a justed adorable. He's like he could be the most interesting boyfriend. Oh, thank you. And he's got an accent hasn't yet. He's okay. So what is it? Much harm so excited to be training today. Oh vic. I'll be like he's the Lipizzaner in the stable that puts Braves in his hair, and he wants them done a certain way and all the other Lipizzaners look at him like, yeah. That's yeah. That's perfect. That's a perfect the nation because he is quite bizarre. But he's just the most seizes smug dog. And I love the relationship. You have with him is very organic relationship. Yes. You do a lot of work with training with him. But you also an a future pocus. I wanna talk about this. You also apart from giving him a lot of choice. You also training him to kind of skew or let you know when he wants things, but also tell you whether he wants to do something or he doesn't, and we are going to talk about that in a future Pokemon was I think that's kind of wet training is going teaching is going see us trading. And we do a lot of concept training. But let me tell you about this classes first Christmas so clauses. First christmas. We drove him. Thank you, mother dot. I love you so much drove him to Iowa from Georgia because I didn't want to be apart from him on Christmas. Oh, my we go into the house. And there's there are what was it sixteen people golden retriever and things not to do Christmas do, but we use management. We had baby gets up and Claus really lived downstairs. Luckily, it was a nice big beautiful home Claus lived downstairs. But how did I enrich him in this place because we were up on a bluff, we got snowed in. So what did we do? Well, one thing that clauses. Really good at is hide and seek love it. You could bring super simple. So let's talk about classes version. It's advanced smart dog. I'm a standard poodle version that is where I can take a ball his favorite squishy ball. Yeah. And I can hide it pretty much anywhere in a room and over time, I've kind of taught him what's inbounds. And what's not inbound? But I can put it pretty much anywhere in that room. And I'll tell him to go to go to his bed in a different room. I'll ask them to wait. I hide the ball. And I come back and release them and say okay seek and he gets to go find that ball. He will search Victoria for ten minutes. He will search so Victoria. How do we teach dogs to do this? Maybe they can't do the advanced version quite yet. Yeah. We'll find something that you dog really likes. If you talk is not a twin motivated, you could try getting control, for example, and putting some of your favorite food in and how I stopped this game is that I will place the toy in an area where the dough could really see it. So I'll make a big fuss of placing it may be behind the the challenge with something. And then I am Bogo back to my dog and say seek go seek, and if the dog kind of even doesn't get the I have to go and get that toy I might go with the job to go. "I mean, there are teas that you can put on your dog and the people do there. Dokes booties which is very important because when it is so so cold dangerously cold like that you have to protect those pools. Okay. But what can you do in places like this to enrich you'll Doug ready for crazy idea? Okay. I once create days too crazy crazy indoor park core. Okay. Indoor park Eric's raises all about indoor par. Okay. So as a certified canine fitness trainer. Yes. That's a real thing. I love to do some fitness. And it doesn't have to be crazy doesn't have to be so regimented. But what I'm talking about? Here is if you do allow your dog on the furniture. So again, we're we're not turning into romper room as my dad would say, but what we can use. We can take some treats and we can lure your dog into different positions. And I know it sounds a little lame. But it can be cool can your dog just put to pas up on the couch. What about the back paws up on the couch? Can we go on the couch off the couch on the bed off the bed? Can they sit down stand or spin on these? These different surfaces. Do you have an Ottoman turning your living room into a little bit of a dog park in an organized way? So we're not just saying we get the zoom. He's all over the place. But if you want to go downstairs to the basement, and do this you have one specific room. This is something we can do to implement a little bit of fitness. You can ask your dog to do these things repetitively. So if you ask your dog to sit and and then get them into a stand or toss a treat. So they get back from this it ten times in a row that is tiring and your dog has to work and engages their brain, it engages their muscles. And you'll be surprised how difficult that is. I see so many puppies in group classes by the end of the group class, they won't sit anymore and people think oh my gosh. We've just been working on this behavior for so long. Why won't you sit because the puppies tired? Yeah. His little muscles are tired. So if you have a big dog, if you've got a really athlete dog, you can do multiple sets and reps of these sits and downs and transitions, but that's the crazy. Okay. So what about people who say, well, my dog suppose on my so far? I don't want them to learn how to get up. On my sofa. What are you saying Allie? I I've seen that. We can we can make arrangements. But I allow my dog on the bed and on the couch. You know, he's not gonna come the boss. He's not going to do all these things. He he's going to go to the show. I would I thought that when dogs are on the bed or on the sofa. They suddenly become top dog. No s looking for the comfy a spot there. And why I say it as a fitness trainer is because we're looking for an uneven surface because it makes it more difficult. Can we do this on the flat floor? Of course, we can we probably wanna use a rug or carpet or a mat of some kind because we don't want the dog to slip on the hardwood. If we're asking him for these different positions. But is something that we can do on the bed or if you don't want your dog up on the better on the couch. You can use some cushions or just a towel or something else to do these different positions. Say fitness, isn't your thing. Or maybe you have mismatched Bella if Bella I don't fitness may, not be her strong, suits. She's not the most agile. She's still because how buddy so long. And there's there are what was it sixteen people golden retriever and things not to do Christmas do, but we used management. We at baby gets up and Claus really lived downstairs. Luckily, it was a nice big beautiful home Claus lived downstairs. But how did I in Richard in this place because we were up on a bluff, we got snowed in. So what did we do? Well, one thing that clauses. Really good at is hide and seek love it, you could leverage super simple. So let's talk about classes version. It's advanced smart dog. I'm a standard poodle version that is where I can take a ball his favorite squishy ball yet. And I can hide it pretty much anywhere in a room and over time, I've kind of taught him what's inbound. And what's not in balance? But I can put it pretty much anywhere in that room. And I'll tell him to go to go to his bed in a different room. I'll ask them to wait. I hide the ball. And I come back and release them and say, okay sake, and he gets to go find that ball, and he will search Victoria for ten minutes. He will search so Victoria. How do we teach dogs to do this? Maybe they can't do the advanced version quite yet. Yeah. We'll find something that you dog really likes. If you talk is not a toy motivated dog. You could try getting a contract, for example, and putting some of your dog's favorite food in and how I stop this game is that I will place the toy in an area where the dough could really see it. So I'll make a big fuss of placing it may be behind the the chair like who something, and then I will go back to my dog and say seek seek and if the dog kind of even doesn't get that I have to go and get that toy I might go with the dog to go. Oh, get the toy. Right. And get really excited about the toy. But most of the time when you tell the dog to go seek they're going to go straight for that toy and then they can eat a little bit of the food out of the toy. And then I'll get the toy back. And then I might hide it somewhere a bit harder for the dog and then gradually as we pay this game and every dog learns at a different pace. So it might be a couple of hours. It might be a few days. It might be a few weeks. I'll get to the point where I can hide the toy and tell the doctor go seek now you can do this inside of you can do it outside when the weather is better. But inside you don't just have to use one toll. You can maybe use tool three toys. And if you want to hide your dog's dinner in them, then do that. So instead of just wasting a really good teaching opportunity. Don't just feed your dog from the bowl, right? Put your dog's food in toys and hide it around the house. Okay. Now, you're going to go hunt and seek for your meal. So I can tell you by the time your dogs. Are they going to be tied? Great enrichment. Absolutely. It's a good point that you can feed your dog through that mechanism to and what I like that you said about at the end is what you're looking for is your dog to be tired. So one good way to to see whether you're in Richmond is truly enriching is does your dog take a nap afterwards because that's what we all want. Right. Why we walk our dog? So they get enrichment they go see things that go do things, and I can tell you after playing hide and seek with Claus for thirty minutes. He sleeps just as much as if we had walked thirty minutes. So if you doubt that this can be as enriching for as a Walker a run for your dog and promise you this is really difficult for them. And I want to add another thing if you have a dog that is used to having children around maybe they love together and the dog really loves being around children, and is okay with children running around the house. One thing that's really fun to do especially if you get Snowden and the kids are there. Take one of the kids toys tell the kid to go in the other room closes. I. Is you hide the kid's toy somewhere in the room? And then you hide the dog's toy somewhere in the room, you release them both and see who wins who is going to go find their toy. I and it's really really fun especially with young kids because they want to try and beat the dog. And again, we're hiding them in separate places. So we don't have a conflict Elliott so doing with the dog that is extremely friendly. That is not a resource God or a toll..

But usually in December January they have to the dogs have to stay indoors. And they have golden retrievers, they've got doodles. I mean what what a you can put. I mean, there are booties that you can put on your dog and the people do walk the dogs booties which is very important because when it is so so cold dangerously cold like that you have to protect those pools. Okay. But what can you do in places? Like this to enrich your dog ready for a crazy idea yet? Okay. Okay. I once created days too, crazy. Indoor park core. Okay. Raises all about indoor part? Okay. So as a certified canine fitness trainer. Yes. That's a real thing. I love to do some fitness. And it doesn't have to be crazy doesn't have to be so regimented. But what I'm talking about? Here is if you do allow your dog on the furniture. So again, we we're not we're not turning into romper room is my dad would say, but what we can use. We can take some traits and we can lure your dog into different positions. And I know it sounds a little lame. But it can be cool can your dog just put to pas up on the couch. What about the back paws up on the couch? Can we go on the couch off the couch on the bed off the bed? Can they sit down stand or spin on these different surfaces? Do you have an Ottoman kind of turning your living room into a little bit of a dog park in an organized way? So we're not just saying we get the zoom. He's all over the place. But if you want to go downstairs to the basement, and do this you have one specific room. This is something we can do to implement a little bit of fitness. You can ask your dog to do these things repetitively. So if you ask your dog to sit and and then. Get them into a stand or toss a treat. Why won't you set? It's because the puppies tired. Yeah. His little muscles are tired. So if you have a big dog, if you've got a really athletic dog, you can do multiple sets and reps of these sits downs and transitions, but that's the crazy. Okay. So what about people who say well my dog's paws on my so far. I don't want them to learn how to get up on my sofa. What are you saying Allie? I I've seen that. We can we can make arrangements. But I allow my dog on the bed and on the couch, and he's not gonna come the boss. He's not going to do all these things. He he's going to go to the show. I I I thought the way dogs are on the bed or on the sofa. They suddenly become top topdog. No that's looking for the company. Spot there. And why I say it as a fitness trainer is because we're looking for an uneven surface because it makes it more difficult. Can we do this on the flat floor? Of course, we can we probably want to use a rug or carpet or a matter of some kind because we don't want the dog to slip on the hardwood. If we're asking him for these different positions. But it's something that we can do on the bed or if you don't want your dog up on the better on the couch. You can use some cushions or just a towel or something else to do these different positions. Say fitness, isn't your thing. Or maybe you have mis mis Bella if Bella I don't fitness may, not be her strong, suits. She's not the most agile of because how body so long. Looks like one of these in toy stories. You said was it users does slinky the dachshund is. So I think she looks like a dandy demain on sheila's. She does she she's or she could be popped Basset hound. I don't know. She is the most bizarre dock, and we always say that if you us to five year old child to draw a dog, they would Joel Bella. And then the teacher would go. Oh, that's very sweet doesn't it like a dope with has very sweet because all the proportions are completely out of proportion. And that's better he's gotten incredibly low neck, very odd face an incredibly long back tiny stubby legs. And I love her. I love her. And you know, she says like a lipid Saana. You know, and they pick up their front hooves whenever I come up front front legs. I should say whenever I come. I have been out and I come back and she's so excited to see me. She dances. It's called the Benhamou dance. But is like from one one to another to an-. Yeah. I'm thinking more Shetland pony. Shetland pony benefit Zona. Okay. Then what Klaus then my dog, the standard Claus is standard poodle? Who is if if that could be, you know, the the three musketeers, right? Could be the fourth musketeer would be. He would be he's very daddy. And he's he's such a bizarre dog and such a justed adorable. He's like he could be the most interesting boyfriend. Oh, thank you. Oh, he and he's got an accident hasn't yet. He's okay. So what is it? So excited to be training today. Oh, now, you Tanovic like he's the Lipizzaner in the stable that puts Braves his hair, and he wants them done a certain way and all the other Lipizzaners look at him. Like, yeah. Yeah. Yeah. That's yeah. That's perfect. That's perfect explanation because he is quite bizarre. But he's just the most seizes smart dog. And I love the relationship that you have with him is very organic relationship. Yes. You do a lot of work with a lot of training with him. But you also an an a future pocus. I wanna talk about this. You also apart from giving him a lot of choice. You also training him to kind of all skew or let you know when he wants things, but also tell you whether he wants to do something or he doesn't, and we are going to talk about that in a future podcast was I think that's kind of wet training is going teaching is going see us training. And we do a lot of concept training. But let me tell you about this f- clauses. First Christmas the clauses first Christmas. We drove him. Thank you mother. And dad, I love you so much drove him to Iowa from Georgia because I didn't want to be apart from him on Christmas. Oh, my and we go into the house. And there's there are what was it sixteen people golden retriever and things not to do Christmas on ought to do. But we used management. We at baby gets up and Claus really lived downstairs. Luckily, it was a nice big beautiful home Claus lived downstairs. But how did I enrich him in this place because we were up on a bluff, we got snowed in. So what did we do? Well, one thing that clauses. Really good at is hide and seek love it. You could super simple. So let's talk about classes version. It's advanced smart dog. I'm a standard poodle version that is where I can take a ball his favorite squishy ball. Yeah. And I can hide it pretty much anywhere in a room and over time, I've kind of taught him what's inbounds. And what's not in bounds? But I can put it pretty much anywhere in that room. And all tell him to go to go to his bed in a different room. I'll ask him to wait. I hide the ball. And I come back and release them and say okay seek and he gets to go find that ball, and he will search Victoria for ten minutes. He will search so Victoria. How do we teach dogs to do this? Maybe they can't do the advanced version quite yet. Yeah. We'll find something that you'll dog really likes. If you talk is not a toy motivated dog, you could try getting control, for example, and putting some of your dog's favorite food in and how I stop this game is that I will place the toy in an area where the dog could really see it. So I'll make a big fuss of placing it may be behind the the challenge with something. And then I will go back to my dog and say seek go seek, and if the dog kind of even doesn't get that I have to go and get that toy I might go with to go. Get the toy right and get really excited about the toy. So I can tell you by the time, you know, dogs. They're gonna be tired. Great enrichment. Absolutely. It's a good point that you can feed your dog through that mechanism to and what I like that you said about at the end is what you're looking for is your dog to be tired. So one good way to to see whether you're in Richmond is truly enriching does your dog take a nap afterwards because that's what we all want. Right. Why we walk our dog? So they get enrichment they go see things they go do things, and I can tell you after playing hide and seek with Claus for thirty minutes. He sleeps just as much as if we had walked for thirty minutes. So if you doubt that this can be as enriching for as a Walker a run for your dog..

"Because for those of you who didn't know my a beautiful dog Sadie, she passed away February, and I adopted the senior dog and her name is Bella, boo. Bala she is a Shitsu mix, and we've had her for I think a couple of months now, and she doesn't care about she doesn't she doesn't mind if it's hot outside if it's cold outside. She's an outside dog. She's Bella out. Jasmine does not want to know she will go out and do have party out there, and then she will come straight back in. And if I do try even take her out because I want to take her out get exercise, I put on a little pink coat, and it's not because the pink coat that she wants to come back inside because she's the same. If I don't put the pink Khotan. But I put the pink Khotan, and she goes walking. And then she won't she's she coaches up. She looks like a little old lady. And looks main turns around and says for the love of goodness. Can we please go home? Your husband just show me a video of her in the snow, and she couldn't decide which part not to put down. Yeah. Not want to be in a did not be and most of the time. We she was snuggled in my jacket. But I mean, you know, come on. She said, I know she's a Chihuahua and chihuahuas incredibly emotional dogs. Right. And you can absolutely see that feelings on just they wear their heart on their pool. Right. They are just they are emotional ducks. But she does she as a bit dramatic. I think they're awesome dogs like people that can be a bit more traumatic. I'm sorry. I just thought I thought she was a mere cat this whole time. She is America's she not at your wa wa wa she is. This is news revelation Ness newspapers as if you just go on my site and you'll see a picture of jasmine. She is a Chihuahua mix them. We think she's been mixed by with mayor cap because she looks she's gonna mayor cafe she does she's has the smear cat. She's just a really interesting very bizarre dog. But I do think she's a little dramatic. And yeah, she is a bit dramatic and when she's outside. She doesn't like something. She will really show you. Okay. Maybe she's like a mother she will really show you. So I have to find ways to enrich her life indoors, which brings us to. If you are in a part of the country added is freezing cold, and you can only take your dogs out for a little bit. What do you do? Do inside the home of what can you do to enrich their lives? I have some ideas, you do 'cause you're great at this. And this is where can I dedicate this to my cousins who are in Iowa. Let's listen to this. Sue city Iowa. Okay. I'm complaining too much contact. I bet it's like minus minus minus it's so. Johny iowa. And then we have Rochester Minnesota, plus the hearts, and then my others. Do you have an Ottoman kind of turning your living room into a little bit of a dog park in an organized way? So we're not just saying we get Zuma's all over the place. But if you wanna go downstairs to the basement, and do this you have one specific room. This is something we can do to implement a little bit of fitness. You can ask your dog to do these things repetitively. So if you ask your dog to sit and and then. Get them into a stand or toss a treat. Pocock was I think that's kind of wet training is going teaching is going see as training. And we do a lot of concept training. But let me tell you about this f- clauses. First Christmas, so clauses. First christmas. We drove him. Thank you mother. And dad, I love you so much drove him to Iowa from Georgia because I didn't want to be apart from him on Christmas. Oh, my and we go into the house. And there's there are what was it sixteen people golden retriever and things not to do Christmas on how to do, but we used management. We at baby gets up and Claus really lived downstairs. Luckily, it was a nice big beautiful home Claus lived downstairs. But how did I in Richard in this place because we're up on a bluff, we got snowed in. So what did we do? Well, one thing that clauses. Really good at is hide and seek love it. You could bring super simple. So let's talk about classes version, it's advanced smart dog. I'm a standard poodle version that is where I can take a ball his favorite squishy ball yet. And I can hide it pretty much anywhere in a room. And over time, I've kind of taught him what's inbounds. And what's not bounds? But I can put it pretty much anywhere in that room. And all tell him to go to go to his bed in a different room. I'll ask him to wait. I hide the ball. And I come back and release them and say okay seek and he gets to go find that ball, and he will search Victoria for full ten minutes. He will search so Victoria. How do we teach dogs to do this? Maybe they can't do the advanced version quite yet. Yeah. We'll find something that you'll dog really likes. If you talk is not a toy motivated dog..

"You who didn't know my beautiful dog Sadie, she passed away last February, and I adopted the senior dog and her name is Bella Bella, she is a Shitsu mix, and we've had her for I think a couple of months now, and she doesn't care about she doesn't she doesn't mind if it's hot outside if it's cold outside. She's an outside dog. She's belcoboost. Jasmine does not want to know she will go out and do party out there, and then she will come straight back in. And if I do try even take her out because I want to take her and give exercise I put on a little pink coat, and it's not because the pink coat that she wants to come back inside because she's the same. If I don't put the pink coat. But I put the pink Khotan, and she goes walking. And then she haunches she coaches up. She looks like a little old lady. And looks main turns around and says for the love of goodness. Can we please go home? Your husband just showed me a video of her in the snow, and she couldn't decide which part not to put down. Yeah. Not want to be in a he did not. And most of the time we she was snuggled in my jacket. But I mean, you know, come on the she's I know she's a Chihuahua and to wa was incredibly emotional dogs. Right. And you can absolutely see their feelings and just they wear their heart on their poor. Right. They are just they are emotional ducks. But she does she is a bit dramatic. I think they're awesome dogs like people that can be a bit more traumatic. We sorry. I just thought I thought she was a mere cat this whole time. She is America's she not at your wa wa while she is this is new revelations news today's if you just go on my site and you'll see a picture of jasmine. She is a Chihuahua mix them. We think she's been mixed by with America because she looks. She's gonna America face. She does she's has the smear cat. She's just a really interesting very bizarre dog. But I think she's a little dramatic, and yeah, she is a bit dramatic and when she's outside. She doesn't like something. She will really show you. Okay. Maybe she's like a mother she will really show you. So I have to find ways to enrich her life indoors, which brings us to if you are in a part of the country, and it is freezing cold, and you can only take your dogs out for a little bit. What do you do? Do inside the home of what can you do to enrich their lives? I have some ideas. I know you do because you're great at this. And this is where can I dedicate this to my cousins who are in Iowa. Let's listen to this. And so your city Iowa. Okay. I'm complaining too much contact. I bet it's like minus minus minus it's increase. So any I wa and then we have Rochester. Minnesota bless their hearts, and then my others. They're going up to I believe it's Mitchell, South Dakota. So we're talking I mean feet of snow just snow forever. And they still get out sometimes. But usually in December January they have to the dogs have to stay indoors. And they have golden retrievers, they've got doodles. I mean what what are you can put. I mean, there are booties that you can put on your dog and the people do walk their dogs booties which is very important because when it is so so cold dangerously cold like that you have to protect those pools. Okay. But what can you do in places like this to enrich your dog ready for a crazy idea yet? Okay. Okay. I once cradle ideas, too crazy. Indoor park hor. Okay. This is all about indoor part. Okay. So as a certified canine fitness trainer. Yes. That's a real thing. I love to do some fitness. And it doesn't have to be crazy doesn't have to be so regimented. But what I'm talking about? Here is if you do allow your dog on the furniture. So again, we're not we're not turning into romper room is my dad would say, but what we can use. We can take some treats and we can lure your dog into different positions. And I know it sounds a little lame. But it can be cool can your dog just put to pas up on the couch. What about the back paws up on the couch? Can we go on the couch off the couch on the bed off the bed? Can they sit down stand or spin on these different surfaces? Do you have an Ottoman kind of turning your living room into a little bit of a dog park in an organized way? So we're not just saying we get the Zuma's all over the place. But if you want to go downstairs to the basement, and do this you have one specific room. This is something we can do to implement a little bit of fitness. You can ask your dog to do these things repetitively. So if you ask your dog to sit and and then. Get them into a stand or toss a treat. So they get back up from this it ten times in a row that is tiring and your dog has to work and engage their brain, it engages their muscles. And you'll be surprised how difficult that is. I see so many puppies in group classes by the end of the group class, they won't sit anymore and people think oh my gosh. We've just been working on this behavior for so long. Why won't you set because the puppies tired? But I allow my dog on the bed and on the couch. And now, he's not gonna become the boss. He's not going to do all these things. He he's gonna go to the show. I I thought the way dogs are on the bed or on the sofa. They suddenly become top dog. No that's looking for the company. Spot there. And why I say it is a fitness trainer is because we're looking for an uneven surface because it makes it more difficult. Can we do this on the flat floor? Of course, we can we probably want to use a rug or carpet or a matter of some kind because we don't want the dog to slip on the hardwood. If we're asking him for these different positions. But it's something that we can do on a bed or if you don't want your dog up on the better on the couch. You can use some cushions or just a towel or something else to do these different positions. Say fitness, isn't your thing. Or maybe you have mis mis Bella if Bella I don't fitness may, not be her strong, suits. She's not the most agile because her body so long. Looks like one of these into a stories. You said was it used does Linke the dachshund. I think she looks like a dandy demain on sheila's. She does she she's or she could be popped Basset hound. I don't know. She is the most bizarre dog. And we always say that. If you ask to five year old child to draw a dog, they would Joel Bella. And then the teacher would go. Oh, that's very sweet doesn't it like a dope with has very sweet because all the proportions are completely out of proportion. And that's Bella she's gotten incredibly low neck, a very odd face an incredibly long back tiny stubby legs. And I love her. I love her and she says like a lipid Saana. They pick up their front hooves whenever I come affront front legs. I should say whenever I come. I have been out and I come back and she's so excited to see me. She dances. It's the Benhamou Danz from point one to another to an yeah, I'm thinking more Shetland pony. Okay. Okay. Shetland pony Zona. Okay. Klaus then my dog the standard. Oh, that's Claus is standard poodle. Who is if if that could be, you know, the three musketeers right in the fourth musketeer would be he would be. He's very dandy, and he's he's such a bizarre dog at such a justed adorable. He's like he could be the most interesting boyfriend. Oh, thank you. And he's got an accent hasn't yet. He's okay. So what is it? Time so excited to be training today. Oh, I feel like he's the Lipizzaner in the stable that puts Braves and his hair, and he wants them done a certain way and all the other Lipizzaners look at him like, yeah. That's okay. Yeah. That's yeah. That's perfect. That's a perfect explanation because he is quite bizarre. But he's just the most Caesar smart dog. And I love the relationship that you have with him is very organic relationship. Yes. You do a lot of work with him do training with him. But you also not in a in a future. Pocus? I want to talk about this. You also apart from giving him a lot of choice. You also training him to kind of skew or let you know when he wants things, but also tell you whether he wants to do something or he doesn't, and we are going to talk about that in a future podcast was I think that's kind of wet training is going teaching is going see us training. And we do a lot of concept training. But let me tell you about this f- classes first Christmas the clauses first Christmas. We drove him. Thank you mother. And dad, I love you so much drove him to Iowa from Georgia because I didn't want to be apart from him on Christmas. Oh, my we go into the house. And there's there are what was it sixteen people golden retriever and things not to do Christmas. But we used management. We had baby gets up and Claus really lived downstairs. Maybe they can't do the advanced version quite yet. Yeah. We'll find something that you dog really likes. If you talk is not a toy motivated dog. You could try getting a calm toy, for example, and putting some of your dog's favorite food in and how I stopped this game is that I will place the toy in an area where the dog could really see it. So I'll make a big fuss of placing it may be behind the the challenge with something. And then I am Bogo back to my dog and say seek go seek, and if the dog kind of even doesn't get the I have to go and get that toy I might go with the job to go. Get the toy right and get really excited about the toy. But most of the time when you tell the dog to go seek they're going to go straight for that toy and then they can eat a little bit of the food out of the toy..
