"When I first started. That's how far back I go. Everything that you've ever read from me are to our listeners. If you've read anything that I've written about Kobe and especially like my remembrance of him after he died, it's because of a relationship that I had. And that relationship had some big highs a big lows that a lot of between over 7 years. But the reason we had a rapport and a trust and I could write out those lows and we could have some really tense moments and then recover from it is because we'd gotten to know each other over time over multiple days, weeks, months and then years. And it's the casual conversation that builds that trust in that rapport. Like anybody else in your life. If you have a coworker that you don't know at all because maybe they remote or maybe they're in a different office halfway around the world. And you have some conflict. It's a lot harder to resolve it. Also, you don't know that person. And you can't vouch for that person. The reason I could talk about Kobe in nuanced ways as a person and as a player, or about Shaq or Robert or Rick Fox, Derek Fisher Horace Grant Brian Shaw, Ron Harper, all these guys that I got to know over that 7 years. It's because I got to know them because we'd sit in the locker room and just shoot the shit sometimes. It wasn't always with the recorder on. Twitter didn't exist back then. So everything no one was living in fear that anything that they say off the cuff might be tweeted because somebody else overheard. We would have these casual conversations we would get to know each other. We'd talk about family and what you're doing in the off season and if they were curious about you, they might ask you about your family. And that's the root of everything that we do that's meaningful. Like this league is not just about trade rumors and breaking down the X's and O's of the game. These guys are people and we're here to tell their stories and you do that best when you know them. And there's a limit to how much you know them even from locker room access. But that's the best way we've gotten to know players historically. It is through a lot of casual contact and being in those locker rooms and I guarantee you folks. Any great feature you've ever read, even a lot of great columns you've read about your favorite players. It's because the reporter in question had built some kind of relationship and rapport with that player. And so it benefits the players too. Like we're not in the locker room just for our own benefit. Yes, like that's how we do the job. Yes, we're arguing for this on our own behalf. But this is a two way street for sure, especially for the guys who are not the stars. Because if you exist, if you do this just in the current version of media access, where the best players are brought out to a podium or put on a zoom camera, well that's it. It's the same two or three guys every night and now you're never in the locker room to chit chat with the 9th man, the 12th man. The guy that they, you know, the undrafted rookie, the Fred van vliet of tomorrow, right? You get to know those guys by being in more casual settings where you can just shoot the shit. And that doesn't happen if everything is formalized press conferences and zoom sessions. And so especially for the guys who aren't the stars, they should want us there. And I think most of them do want us there. I think Adam spoke out of turn, frankly. I don't think he clearly understands what the dynamics in the locker room are because I don't think he's been in there. He hasn't needed to be. It's not his job. I think what he said was regrettable. He clearly had some regrets himself because he did set out a follow-up statement to walk some of it back. Yeah, I come at this from the approach of someone who's been a magazine writer for nearly 20 years now. And I can say unequivocally that the very best stuff that I've been able to put together. You know, the one or two stories of my lifetime have actually been any good. But the very best stuff I've been able to do, it often is a result of something I gleaned from being in the locker room. I mean, I'll be perfectly honest, I don't gain a heck of a lot from pregame locker room access, never really did, and that's largely because the NBA's is kind of allowed these guys to move the locker room into the training room. Before games, this very few players, at least in my experience, that are in the actual locker room itself. This is oftentimes a lot of standing around. But after games, you know, you're hanging around by a locker for someone that just spoke to the gaggle at large, but might be willing to speak even further as he kind of cleaned himself up and got ready to go out the door. I mean, more recent example when Kawhi Leonard was in Toronto and during that one year, I was sent out there to do a profile on Kawhi Leonard. And if anyone's ever dealt with Kawhi Leonard, not going to give you much in interviews. You've got to write around him. So in the confines of that small raptors locker room, I was able to walk to Fred van vliet to Serge Ibaka to Kyle Lowry, the Lowry, you know, you got to work on him a little bit too. You know, different guys and just ask them for little scraps of information that when you put them all together, turns out to be a pretty good story without that. It doesn't work as well. And I'm not guessing on that. It was just, it was during the pandemic year. The last year where we were really at arm's length from players. During that year, I had to write a story about the jazz and how the jazz had gone from being a team in March of 2020. That was on the verge of breaking up. It seemed like to where they were in March of 2021, which at that time was like the best team in the NBA. They had reversed their fortunes in the span of one calendar year. I had to do the entirety of that story over Zoom and not only is it a challenge despite the best efforts of PR staffers there. I was a challenge to get guys to commit to doing 5, ten, 15 minute zooms, but once they're there, it's hard to command their attention. And it's hard to keep them as locked in as you would if you were standing in front of their locker, you know, doing the job that way. So it's not nothing, as you said. You want to read something interesting, you want something that's rich in detail, that's better than kind of the boilerplate stuff that you can see just on YouTube or that comes out on Twitter based on what guys said over Zoom conference calls. That's where it comes from. And it would be a shame if the NBA didn't realize that. They benefit, as you know, Howard, from these stories, when someone out there, our colleagues, write great stories, it's largely because they've been able to get the kind of access you need to get to write that stuff. And you would think the NBA would be more aware of that, but the messaging was tone deaf to me. And Adam silver, I thought was smart enough to know better. Yes. And it'll be an ongoing conversation. One other thing that I thought was relevant to this and I'll leave it on this note. The entire so we opened this podcast talking about what LeBron said about possibly going back to Cleveland. That story, which has been all anybody's talked about for the last couple of days, and was one of the bigger stories to come out of all star weekend, was LeBron giving an exclusive to Jason Lloyd of the athletic. Jason Lloyd, who no longer covers the NBA in a full-time basis for the athletic. He's, I think, more of an editor and just all around whatever. And he doesn't cover LeBron anymore because he's still based in Cleveland and LeBron, of course, is in LA. But for the four seasons that LeBron was back with Cleveland, he got to know very well, it had a great rapport with and trust with and confidence in, Jason Lloyd, Joe vardon, and Dave mcmenamin. And those guys, if you were ever in that locker room, you would see them all the time. LeBron, whether he was talking officially or not, there would always be a little side thing with one or two or all three of those guys. He got to know them really well in the locker room. That's where that happened. That's where that rapport was built. So when LeBron had something to get off his chest and Jason Lloyd approached him.

"It. I mean if it's an amusement park ride. I mean i've seen it from a distance but i still don't have any like in into let me tell you something. I was standing up there. At the top of the stratosphere. I was looking out over the range of las vegas and in my mind i was saying go back. Just go back. Don't do this. But they were telling me we've never had an accident in the history of this thing. No one's off your could be the one no one's ever died. No one's ever gotten hurt so so my mind. I'm trying to rationalize this. No one's ever gotten hurt. It's safe. I can do this but i'm afraid of heights. I'm standing out here on this diving. Plankton i'm looking out over and finally one to go and i was flying and i was screaming. We are you know. And i had like a gopro camera my arm so i could see everything and in the final says. It was amazing but i was scared. You know what lewis to actually do it. But i'm saying there's there's maybe something out there that if i knew it was a restaurant chain. That wasn't going anywhere and i could be anywhere in the world and i could get free food for life. I might do something outrageous getting a tattoo. Maybe not though. I don't think so lynn's is there anything you do for free food. Anything like i would like to sing a song or trying to something that you find even remotely that you'd have to actually think about something that you know. Is there a restaurant specifically that you would that you would want to frequent. Laura was talking about this place in san francisco. Who knows what the places even that good. But like is there a spot that you would say. This place frequented enough. I would do it. I think i would for barrio. Which is northeast ohio establishment. It really true tacos. My favorite food. Wait a second you. Everyone has the same laws at that particular moment. Like we all hit the twenty second. Hit two double shoulders there so ohio that they can't make good street tacos like just saying that it's not thing it's i mean. Honestly natty i saw like. Cincinnati is basically kentucky. It's hours away from cleveland. Where where i am. So they're quite completely different states. But i mean yeah. They're they're extremely popular. It's my favorite restaurant. Don't try fernow. I'm not gonna knock it. I'm not gonna knock it but the people here that and they're like asking ask anybody any of the people that are well traveled reporters and broadcasters that you work with out. What's the name of the place barrio all right. I'm gonna. I'm gonna text david minute right now. Daily you had to live in cleveland. Okay i i'm gonna take him. I will ask joe. Vardon ask is perfect. Because he's lived here in la for a long time and he lived here before he went to cleveland's those couple of years and right now and ask them live on the air and he will tell you. It's okay. I will give you the number. Call him right now. Do you have his number call. Mcmenamin right now at the top of the call him for texting right now say i need george needs to ask you a food question about cleveland right now at five o'clock so just be ready near your phone. The i wanna hear from admendment is is this place bario now. Where is it in ohio. They have a couple different locations. There's one in downtown cleveland chain. It's not a chain it's not chain. It's not a chain. it's a local family and they are so popular that they opened other stores. It's a chain at all the local place. They have like three or four stores around here. You understand lindsey that when you said this. It wasn't just the three of us. It was everybody in their car. Going time hold on you hear choosing a straight talk. I don't care where you guys. I don't make like i'm not gonna rip fun. We're just saying that i. You know you're you're second guessing me that's fine because your favorite food is your food and this is my favorite food. And that's just how. I feel about him but the thing is la where we have layover impossible for for there to be legit taco truck. It's not as good as here is what i would say. No it's going. I was just gonna say like i have jetties janice puerto rican right. We go to new york. Yeah crazy good. Poor sure but yeah here you might have like like no but you eat there because that's what you've got now. It's good that i talk about it all the time. People can say whatever they want about cuban food here in l. a. Okay i am. Cubit grown up in basically northern cuba. Okay Which is miami and i will tell you this that. There's only two places in town where i have eaten authentic. Cuban food that i would say is like anything. I've had anywhere else where i grew up. And that is that will be gone a bakery downing and what you need in silverlake and that's it so it's not that we're not making fun of it. Would you say it's hard to believe that that would be like a spot where they would have great mexican food however not you know. We just need validation from someone who else has has lived in both areas. Well look i guess. Johnson said i said sodano wants to ask you a cleveland food question. We're going to call you at five o'clock. I can't tell you what it's about but don't embarrass me. I got into a big argument with a baseball player. Who told me that. He had the best mexican food of his life in charlotte north carolina and went pro. You mean to tell me no. There's better mexican food in charlotte north carolina than there is here in l. a. And he went. Yeah they have better white caso. And i went bro. Listen is there a large mexican population in charlotte north carolina. That i'm unaware of i like dude. You got all these places. I'm telling you there's better mexican food here than there is in charlotte. North carolina by assumption. Lindsay is that there's lots of places lots of options and probably better options. la than there is in cleveland. Ohio but if the family moved to cleveland and they brought their great recipes and perhaps where they call it is possible. That is a possibility. Just time out. Was that seems shocking correct. I wanna say it's not. It's not mexican food by like the regular like there's better mexican like i see i. It's hard explained their like their street tacos. But it's not like hardcore mexican food like okay. Let's stroke i guess okay. We'll ask by the dog perhaps agrees with you based on the reaction cheering on his toy. Taco shaw quick. Before we get to mcmenamin whether he will embarrass you were not. Us's situation.

"Still think that. Shame on you though. I'm proud of coach popovich to i'm probably while speaking about a hero wendell's roll. Sports podcast was yours. Truly window the wallace coaching an olympic gold medal. Something that phil. Jackson never did won a gold medal. So i'm proud because folks were coming at him and the team full force after the loss of france which snap a twenty four game losing streak in the olympic competition. They were talking about you. Know a up. How bad the international coach greg popovich is and after that law of france. They were talking about you know was roster a joke in these clueless with an offense that lock very little on what players do well and you know toasty. Shefty was still coaching team. That they would have won easily mike. The course of the sporting news. He wrote a column talking about after france defeat. Great popovich running out of time to show. He can win olympics as team. Usa coach and made the argument. That college coaches are better prepared to coach an olympic team and nba coaches. So we went ahead and did that brought up some nonsense about that. Joe vardon of the athletic reported on july twenty seven that the that the that the team was frustrated with the popovich. It was reported that the players were frustrated grumbling under way back to the locker room about running the san antonio offense the game against france will apparently they felt like there were better ideas so all of those things after one loss to france and of course there was the embarrassment to nigeria loss exhibition loss to nigeria in australia into everybody was taking shots and doing these types of things so i i loved the audio that i have. I loved it after but we loved it. When coach coach pop was giving his speech to the players after the game and he remissed to also mention the critics after winning the gold medal in. This is what mommy coach popovich said regarding the.

"At the olympics to france the next two opponents by the way are iran. And it's today right araya day and then the czech republic so they're going to get out of this group. It's not and by the way. They are still favored in vegas to win the whole thing and a lot of people rousseau in particular chris. Mad dog russo. Who i love. I love his show on. Mlb network every day. He started. He talked yesterday on his radio. Show about gregg popovich. Listen to this. Oh such a grouch. And he hates the media so much. Gee whiz you know what this is not little senate tonio texas where you can intimidate. Everybody always gonna say anything. And that small little south western texas town. This is supposed to be representing america. Here you can't answer a couple of tough questions after a bad loss and anybody who has the oh tacit ask you. A question is is a bird brain. Come on cut it out. Gee whiz goodness gracious job me nuts. I can this to him after these games. They ask him anything that that has looked at negatively he. What are you know about basketball. You don't know anything about it. Shut up popovich please. So here's an example of how popovich is handling class. Just this is after the loss to nigeria. And here's a little clip of the you get a feel for the way. Popovich is approaching the international media. Also answer the question. You ask the same sort of question. Same family of question last time where you assume things that are not true. When you just mentioned you know blowing these teams out. That's never happened. So i don't know where you get that. Can i finish can i. Can i finish my statement can i. Can i finish my statement. Are you gonna let me finish my statement or not so. You'll be quiet now. We'll talk. And then i'll listen to you. By the way that wasn't to the international media that was to joe vardon from the athletic. We've got on the show but wasn't a part of the international like for example. Now he's at. That was a loss in las vegas confidence. Can i finish. This is now. He's in tokyo with the us olympic team and he is a royal jerk. There were a bunch of words that could have inserted there and he's dealing with reporters from all over the world now. Is that how he's going to behave. When he deals with the reporter from germany and the reporter from france and a reporter from australia is that the way he's going to behave because that is embarrassing on. I get it when he's doing it in the nba. That's his thing but when you're doing it on an international stage and you're dealing with media from around the world don't you have to be more gracious than that all right i. I wasn't sure you were going to bring this up. But it is one of the strangers phenomenon. I've been covering the nba is how gregg popovich treats reporters. Because if you talk to people that have worked with pop. They will all say to a person that he is the greatest guy. You're ever going to meet that. He would literally do anything for his players anything's for his assistance and like when mike brown was coach in the lakers he couldn't say enough and mike brown by the way was the coach for nigeria. The beat popovich when joe var nasa question. But you talked to mike. Buttonholes are the guy who just wanted. Milwaukee comes from the popovich street. Steve kerr who is about one of the greatest guys. You'll ever meet swears by popovich so much show that he agreed to be an assistant for pop on this team. Curry's there even though he's one what three of the last five titles right. And he's working as an assistant popovich because he played for them so players and coaches and people like that. This came up when you were gone..

"No smerch yeah guys. Let's start with team. Usa oh boy. tk on. Sunday defeated by france team. Usa was for their first olympic loss. Since two thousand and four trae last. We checked in with you. You're a nine. I think on the worried scale for team. Usa chances to win gold. I'm guessing it's gone up is it isn't a ten. Is it over at ten somehow. Is that even possible. Yeah what did you think of this. you know. Look pretty astonishing loss here to a good france team but a team still humulus. It should be while. I was at nine skeets until we started getting some emails from breaking t saying we got to get these things out fast before team. Usa lose again eliminated from the olympics. So i had to upgrade to a ten. What is going on here. This is getting ridiculous. The same things that were a problem in two thousand nineteen world cup. They're still a problem now. First of all getting torched on the perimeter. When nigeria beat the united states in a friendly tons of three pointers when australia the united states in a friendly was patty mills going off and now against france in a game that really counts. It was up forty going wild twenty eight points hits big shots down the stretch to me. That one comes down to roster construction. There are no stoppers on the team. Usa team except for jrue holiday who was just playing in the nba finals on somehow was the best player for team usa in this loss against the france. But when you look at the personnel. They're sending out there. Damian lillard bradley. Beal zach levine. They're not getting stops. And that's not a big deal if they hit shots but that's the biggest problem to me. Why is team. Usa's offense so bad that an eight point lead with about three minutes left outscored sixteen to two and didn't make a field goal. The last three minutes that a bunch of great looks to take the lead with about what fifty seconds left and it was just brick city they also had a stretch where they scored three points in seven minutes during the third quarter. And this to me it comes down to gregg popovich. This is literally a. What are we running here sort of compliment her criticism because according to joe vardon at the athletic players are grumbling about running the san antonio offense after the game it feels like the americans can't score inside in half court sets only drew holiday was attacking the rim. I think it's too much teamwork. You gotta let kevin durant cook and you gotta let damian lillard cook slovenia. They're not worried about getting zoran dragging lists. You know what i'm saying. Kevin durant should you fifteen to twenty times a game. Obviously he in foul trouble for this one but he should be leading the way damian lillard be the number to ten to twelve shots a game. Everybody else you're getting three looks maybe five. You got people. Call dr to the best player in the tournament. He has been so far. But did you watch the playoffs. That happened a month ago. Kevin durant one of the two or three best players in the nba given the ball and let him go to work guys. Incredible somebody needs to get inside and scores some buckets at the rim. Free in the united states This should be kevin durant team. They're gonna be iran. No doubt about it but they need to look like team. Usa against the czech republic. I know gregg popovich thinks it's a diss to expect a blowout from team usa. I'm not expecting a blow. But i'm expecting them to win like they should win these games. There is a lot of talk about. The world has caught up to the usa. And you know. This isn't the same team usa team. I'm sorry they're still running a lot of all stars out there and you know. There's one all star on the france team evan. Forty is a solid player. But the guy look like luca danni against team. Usa is there's got to be something offensively that makes more sense. You can't go ten minutes of the game scoring five points. And that's what it is that third quarter run a net fourth-quarter end of the game up five points and ten minutes from a team. Usa team with kevin durant out there. That doesn't make you talked about them yet. Not attacking part of that is go. Bear the actual all star on team france. There he can just setback their league. Because there's no three second defensive violation and that's what you should do if you have gobert and trae senate durant was in foul trouble and lillard shot was horrible. Three italian he had more turnovers insist. He played poorly. They had chances though they had like five chances. There they'd like on one possession that five shots and levin miss and open three key missed open three jrue holiday miss an open three in the corner. What what do you make of. Should we panic or was this like you know. Don't worry you're probably not playing another team. Like bill like france with gobert and they had a couple of other two two other giant seven voters that played big big. Like you'll see different teams and get back to being trades playing and just sort of let it free flow of flow freely or is this a concern because they've lost a lot of games here. They've lost five of their last eight games now. Well i think a couple of things. I think if they do hit maybe two shots down the stretch and the last minute i probably can pull. This went out They didn't do it. I just couldn't hit shots like that. But the other thing is You know as as try. So diluted today known in the world would of course question whether or not even forty. I was a bit of boss will play than kevin durant but in the system that he played on that particular game he looked better he just looked at he knew where to go. Whereas it felt like the the us. I didn't quite know how to use. Kevin durant which is incredible because how much of the practice will thought you need to put into site. Kevin durant souls some. No one can. Stop. let's get a the trouble came into play a little bit. But again these these teams like like i feel like we think. Go bear and evan phony honestly ten olympics in a row. These guys just always turn up for their team. And that's the other thing you Another big problem actually for the us. I i really can't address when they had the dream team again. This is obviously a longtime nearly thirty years ago now but it felt like even the smallest even go like michael jordan. And scottie pippen physically. Just look sorry much bigger than their parents you know when robinson was at their and patrick ewing. It felt like every other team center was like six. I guy who's just trying to punch above his white france to me. Look the opposite. The that it looked like kevin durant out there who you know a seven footer or closing up. He looked like he was only about six five six six and he was playing in in the pint defensively little bit even bam at a boy who is physically guys like bear look gigantic and they had another couple of guys off the bench there for france when those being borders came in. Yep it felt to me like like wow the. us is really missing. Some physical Advantage that i have had in the past and and again they're not going to be out to replace those plays but again when you've got limited when you got Kevin durant those guys should be able to school a lot easier than they were able in that first game but again this is the first game me not out i think. Eight of the twelve teams. Make it through to this sort of knockout stage. Basically a victory over iran and another victory czech republic will put them through for sure. I could probably even lose to the czech republic. Still might get through. I believe they would have to hammer iran which they probably yeah so again an and sometimes losing at the start. It's like okay. We are now in desperation mode straightaway. So that's a good thing. I think the us. I like we have to be locked in from the start but lee want ask you. Your pop apologised for sure. You love pop. We all do but is trey right. Like should he stop trying to ron spurs offense with this type of squad and just sit down and pretend it's almost like a damn all star game and let and put kadian a million pick and rolls or whatever lillard and just stop over thinking it and like the beautiful baldwin and like and do the opposite. What are you saying. Well it's funny. Because at times. The usa in preliminary losses against like australia and nigeria. It looked like it was far too much.

"See that word the mainstream or three or four professional sports league stuff that you just didn't get a chance to see so you're right. We don't see those that much. We don't see enough track and field on quote unquote mainstream television. Unless it's something like that. So i mean on that he like and like you said i'm not like i'm really not taking time out of my day or if you see right i got it on while we're doing a show and it's like man. These are some great athletes but speaking of the olympics. It's not going to well for team. Usa basketball rob and obviously they shocked everyone by losing tonight geria- and then to australia in exhibition games right. That was leading up right. Yeah unless they start playing once he gets serious. That's what everybody league at serious i- in game one against france which you knew it'd be tough me but here's the thing. France was ranked seventh in the world of course. Usa is ranked one But if you say score seventy three point what was. The final hours went off. Seventy my head. Eighty-five rob g get eighty three seventy six seven. Remember forty minute gang. I'm just saying but you're right. That's still not anywhere. Rob the three point line is closer right. That's what i'm saying like they. They didn't score that much. I was well there. Were there's reports. Joe vardon of the athletic and he's one rob. You might remember last week or week and a half ago whatever it was kinda got into it with popovich gregg popovich at the press conference when he said do you remember when and said usually you know we've blown these teams out and then and popovich snapped at him which was rude and wrong because we do blow these teams out. Now i get it. We've had closed gays with within argentina. You know what i mean. Close winds but for properties to act like the question was why more audit like out of the league. Not not legit is not fair because he was straight up wrong you know he was absolutely wrong. The reporter was right but anyway. Now there's been talk that popovich. I mean rob. Popovich is eleven in six in internet. Not not impressive at all. Not at all. They were seventy five and one under success. We hadn't lost a an olympic aim in twenty five year or twenty five games right. It was twenty five games and popovich loses the first one. He six games that matter internationally. He's doing a bad job. And i'm sorry i'm not as there's other reasons does roster fit. Players aren't playing. Well i get all of that player's head to join in three or four joined in after the lane. Everything right yup. So but rob. He is not. There's no two ways about it. He's struggling in international. Play because this is not like oh. They happen to lose the first game. They've lost what three of their last. Four if you count exhibitions. And he's eleven at six right. Even joe would say that they're struggling. Hey links struggling no talk it ugly and you expect players from the nba this country to to just put on shorts and sneakers and basically be able to be just about anybody right. There's a day every once in a while even every once in a while you can lose right with play..

"This is the dan lebatardshow with two got spot casts a couple of reporters from the olympics to guts. And we have been remiss in not bringing this up yet because it is. And i don't care what anyone says about the world catching up. It is surprising to see our usa basketball team filled with all stars. Losing this way. And i know gregg popovich wants us to celebrate the french. Evan for free agent to be. Evan forni a and rudy gobert and nicolas batum and i understand what he is saying every time he says it disrespects the world to expect us to just go out there and blow everyone out but we have the best players we have the most all-stars we have the most accomplished coach and it is surprising to see them. Lose this much. Lose this way no matter what it is that you think about international rules handcuffing the kind of athleticism that our guys have that the other team simply don't have even though luca's line yesterday was was ridiculous. To god's forty eight eleven and five in thirty one minutes on sixteen two percent shooting. The world has caught up in a way that i believe is super surprising. Even as popovich tells us to quit being surprised but the headline on. Dan wilkins column in usa. Today after this loss was time to face facts nba. Coaching legacy legend gregg. Popovich stinks at olympic basketball. And joe vardon is writing to be clear popovich's horrified by his own record coaching this team. He dwells on it and hates the losing. The players are frustrated to grumbling on their way back to the locker room about quote running the san antonio offense when apparently they feel like they're better ideas and papa said because of the truncated nature of team. Usa's training camp. The offense would be based on concepts instead of set play. I don't care what the players have to say dan. I really don't. It just doesn't matter to me doesn't hold wait. Listen that offense was good enough to have them up. Double digits late night game and up seven with. I think three or four minutes ago and they couldn't put that team away. They have kevin durant damian lower. They have some of the best players in the world. They have a really really good team despite having javale mcgee on that team but they have a really good team. I don't want to hear from the players. I don't care what offense you're running. I don't care what who your coaches. I don't care what's going on europe double digits against an inferior team. Put the game away. I don't want to hear from that okay. You said that four times and you didn't hear from players. I was quoting writers there. Were there weren't players saying anything they don't want to hear the reports. That players are frustrated with greg papa. Jimothy game away. But you didn't hear okay. You didn't hear that. just fix it. I don't care if i'm coaching your coaching. He's coaching. I don't care who's coaching team. When you're up double digits on the french and the second half of olympic game. Put the game away. Thank you stu. Office was fine to give them up double digit. Okay you you mentioned all this. I would like to explore the next step beyond the easy stand. How embarrassing it is that. Our basketball team is losing more games than it ever has in this tournament. The thing that i think is so is. I believe popovich's olympic winning percentage is worse than it san antonio spurs winning percentage and all of the dismissive the condescension when reporters asked you questions. The grumpiness right whole hell of a lot less charming when you're not winning when you order looking like you have the clearly best players and you're not winning right when your smarts aren't doing anything when we know you have the best dudes like we're watching and we know who those guys are and what they are is not even -fornia. It's kevin durant out there looking in effective out of nowhere. right damian. lillard was bad bad. Yup i mean they have many open shots at the end of that game wide open threes..

You exactly how that was going to play out before eating the of especially in this tournament you can beat you on e. can get back down again stops to the corner. Luggage wide open threes. Good there is no shots. You can take away from him. It's double them and try to keep multiple players in front of him. You can try to keep them out of a lane you can press him at the three point line and he's just has too much three. Don't just doesn't just watching just love. Luca danni getting close to unconscious levels now so i can't wait to see him on an international stage. That's the first thing. I think australia is another team. That's really of gun for this. You know they've been forced a few times. They don't have ben simmons but they are a good team. They have a bunch of pros and so the boomers are certainly going to be hungry to try. Get this done. Definitely keep your eye on them. And then listen i gotta be honest with you. I mean i wanna see what we get out of nigeria. I don't wanna say like they're guaranteed go to the medal round but the first two performances they handed in here in vegas legit so you know. I want to see how they do. It will be fun. And lastly joe going back to this idea of american exceptionalism that we talked about. Where do you think we stand. Are we getting closer to a future where the. Us is not the best team. Are we already there where we add in this moment. well. I mean after nigeria one. Mike brown i asked him that question and he said i don't think so. I if you look at the pool of talent dead. Usa basketball has to pool from or to draw from It no country can match it know In in the reality of it is a lot of their talent. They just kind of throw together at the last second single winner so i guess from that perspective team. Usa still is what it is. But i think that we are in a stage. Obviously where you can't slam your fist on the table and guaranteeing american goal. At some point. I think as basketball continues to grow in so many more players. Get good at it across the world. I think we're gonna get into a position where it's like like soccer where you have a few global powers. The you know are going to be there in the world cup every year. I think we're gonna get there in basque. Actually do so. I think that's going to be exciting. Hopefully fiba world cup grows in popularity. I know it's bigger in other countries than it is in the us. "Ten there were ten rounds. They drafted ten college pitchers. Wow so they are not messing around the they realize we've got otani. We've got trout. We've got anthony rendon and we have no pitching. Were not only gonna take pitchers. We're gonna take older pitchers who could be up here helping these guys one to two years and you get ten of two or three of them pan out. That's pretty good right. So i applaud the angels for doing that. They're not completely out of it this year but trout's been hurt a lot And he they expect him back after the all star break by the way We're talking about cory seager yesterday. The dodgers have said they expect seger to be activated when they opened up a series against the giants at the end of this all star break so we are going to see cory seager. I don't know how healthy he'll be but he is going to get back out there and give it a go which is encouraging all right. Good news about team usa. They've been taken their lumps but they've tipped off in vegas against argentina and it's so far so good we'll update your next mason and ireland remotely information seven ten. Espn and we're keeping an eye on this say usa argentina game. If you haven't been following the men's olympic basketball team is doing two games in las vegas and they've been upset two games in row over the weekend. They lost to nigeria last night. They lost again to austrailia ramona. They are not taking this lightly. They have jumped all over argentina in the first quarter of the usa is up. Twenty eight to twelve and argentina like. Yeah argentina's a good team but these guys have been especially defensively a step slow. There's a couple of reasons for that. Let me survey saying. I'm not discouraged that these games that the us as lost. I think they can still win the gold medal. I think they're that talented. Don't you think they could still win it. Oh yeah they can still win. They just need to get it together pretty quick. Because that's what that's the whole point. He's exhibition game just to find a way of playing together and learn each other's tendencies and learn how they want how they wanna play offense defense and you shouldn't have to on the first two losses but you shouldn't take them lately either because the rest of the world has caught up. The usa team just showed up six days ago. They're still you know they know they know each other's names but they don't know much more than that they haven't been. This isn't a program that we've had in the past where people develop and they they learn to play together throughout a number of international tournaments. John this is literally whoever was still available and right and part of this is our best players are not on this team. Lebron out there steph. Curry is not there klay thompson. Not there they asked a lot of different people to go and a lot of people told him. No there's no russell westbrook there's no james harden there's There's no john wall thought like even a guy like deer fox might be able to help. Basically the biggest stars in the team or damian lillard kevin durant bradley neil and draymond green and their undersized they the big guys on this roster are kevin love bam adebayo and draymond so if the other team has like argentina louis scuola the former nba players on here. So i mean you can guard him with love or with dream on. But it's not like we have kareem abdul-jabbar at center. It's there's no true seven footer. On the closest thing to a seven footer is durant. But i i'm unlike the rest of the world. I'm not panicking. I think that that team usa could win. I don't know if they will. I think that until you commit to sending your absolute best players. You're leaving a the door. Cracked open the team. Now the other thing you may have heard about is that after the game. Last night joe vardon. Who's a writer from. The athletic was asking damian. Lillard a simple question. You used to watch these games at home. This is your first time playing for team. Usa are you surprised that the teams that used to get beat up by the us by eight forty and fifty points are now beating you in these games and dame answered the question and then gregg popovich unsolicited kind of jumped down. Joe vardon's throat. Here's what it sounded like. Here's popovich also answer their question. You ask the same sort of questions. Same family of questions last time where you assume things that are not true. When you mentioned you know blowing these teams out. That's never happened. So i don't know where you get that. Can i finish divested. Can i finish my statement can i. Can i finish.

"Guy for the athletic. He got into a little ugly skirmish yesterday with gregg. Popovich here is the sound of gregg popovich being unhappy with our guest in about a minute. You ask the same sort of questions. Same family of question last time where you assume things that are not true when you just mentioned blowing these teams out. That's never happened. So i don't know where you get that. Can i finish. Let me finish my statement or not. So you'll be quiet now. While i talk and then i'll listen to you when you make statements about in the past just blowing out these other teams number one you give no respect to the other teams and i talked to you last time about the same thing. So let's bring in joe vardon. Who was part of that service disagreement from the athletic so he is saying basically. We don't blow these teams out and your argument is well. Sometimes we do so. Give me some clarity here on the moment yesterday. And what you guys were arguing about okay. So first of all. The question was not to coach. The question was damian lillard and it was essentially. Look you used to be sitting at home watching your colleagues play these games. I'm thinking about twenty fourteen when he was cut and again in two thousand sixteen and he was watching the this team win by an average of twenty nine points. Thirty points thirty two points and all of this team. Usa game notes and damian answered the question he said. Yeah it is different. It is having watched that. Watch the blowouts to now be a part of it on the other side Where they've lost tuna row. he's he did mention. I've also seen team. Usa challenged before a maybe never having lost two straight. And then greg he interjected on his own and he was thinking back to the first question that i asked him asked him after they lost to nigeria which was from a point spread perspective anyway arguably the largest upset and international basketball history And i basically asked. I said this is from a american exceptionalism in basketball standpoint. But you know you guys lost again. And what does this mean. Does this mean your messages aren't getting through that sort of thing. So he had still had that on his mind. I think he came Trying to you know refer back to that but not asked him any question and what you can't hear on the sound is when i start to interrupt when he started says start to say this isn't true We don't blow teams out. Well it's in the game notes again In two thousand fourteen two thousand sixteen twenty twelve huge margins victory yes in twenty sixteen gold medal game. Tsa one by thirty so then you look at now today. in two summers under under coach They're nine and five. And that's just that's never been seen before since nineteen ninety-two when the american starting started sending their pro so that was the context of where i was coming from. And and you know you guys saw. That happened next totally accurate. This is the reality is we all have is and we all have google as you pointed out in the in the game notes. Now you could use a lot of excuses. First of all the world is getting better. But they're not that much better is it is it. Popovich's is the team distracted. I was saying earlier. It's a whip chris. Broussard brought this. We have no. Who's the leader. Katie's did not really leadership guy is it. Is it allows the construction of the roster which is really not built to be thrown together and succeed well. I think we're all still trying to figure this out. I mean we thought we had the answers in two thousand nineteen when you look at the roster instead okay They're sending a mostly be in seedless roster and you're playing some of these other teams who have pros on it as well like. Yeah there's going to be much smart a smaller margin but this roster isn't like that it it has some top heavy stars with kevin durant in damian lillard. Said answer your question you could say they are smaller which was by design You could say they have been impacted by injury against. Anthony davis kawhi leonard kyrie irving. James harden You could say that But again the margin for error has simply shrunk and now when kate egos ten thirty which is what he is in these first two games. They can't they. Can't survive that when damian lillard who's is fine of an player is there is in the world gets beat. You know time. And again by patty mills or by gave vincent the other night against nigeria. They can't they can't survive that and You know they're going to have to figure out a way to team. Rebound they're gonna have to play better defensively. They were shredded All night in the second half last night in they're switching defense and You know the sort of the Company line last night was well. We're not shake so you know team. Australia in nigeria. They have close to those guys seem to be in shape. So i don't know how that explains things but the guys did look tired so we'll see if they get their legs and they start to be able to execute but i think what's clear is these games are going to be close and you could win a gold and it'll be really exciting but we've never used. The word could really certainly not in many many years when it comes to this team and now i think we have to tomorrow game for nba finals. Box and the sons You know i was saying this earlier. I don't know if our graphics guys can get it up but but phoenix is younger. More slender athletic they're there they like up tempo. It's not a big team outside of jae crowder. This was a tug of war. It would be you know. We're showing chris. Always one hundred. Seventy five cameron payne one hundred eighty devon booker. Two hundred maceio. Bridges a forward to nine deondraye. Eight into fairly slender. You go to the milwaukee bucks roster it is an older bigger more physical group of men where you got bobby portis fifty and brook lopez and even your guards drew holiday are compact and physical in. It looks like to me when i've watched the games. It's gonna be up to coaches and temple. If it's a faster series up temple phoenix if you wanna just bang around in this series if it was a tug of war would last about ten seconds so i. I don't think anybody no reasonable person thought that it would be a sweet. But do you believe that. Milwaukee has discovered a new way to play. It will make the difference in the series. Well no. i don't think they've discovered a new way to play. I think they were able to dictate the pace like you set on sunday and janas has been awesome. He has been. He's playing maybe as well as he's ever played. And this is certainly the time to do it. So that's great but for one night. In milwaukee devon booker was no good brook lopez was able to stay on the floor and when he's able to do that that really helps the bucks but there's lots of times in the playoffs when that doesn't happen in the sons had been able to exploit him earlier on in the series. So you know. I think that's where we are right now if devon booker can play the way he has played for most of these playoffs than this becomes a harder series If they can get brook lopez's away from the rim and kind of Catch him in some of the switches that that helps that helps get him off the floor but if they're not able to do that and y- honest is controlling the temple and the pace sort of the way the collided in the twenty nine thousand nine finals and twenty nineteen Actually conference finals against the bucks. You know then. This is a series that that no walkie certainly can come back and win. So you know I'm really fascinated to see what happens tomorrow. Night.

"At six foot ten and still twenty four years of age seriously to an iheart back to that february game. There was no embodied in there was runaway. Talk that rudy. Gobert was going to be defensive player of the year once again. It was at utah. Tough malays to play. And what had been simmons at six feet ten inches tall. Do he said watch. This any went for forty two points and nine rebounds and twelve assists while make joel embiid nail making twelve thirteen free threes willoughby's highly capable. Trade will be when you watch him shoot. Free throws is the stroke sound. Yeah it looks real sad. He looks like a pretty conventional. Nobody when you watch shoot a jump shot when you want to shoot a three if it sounds because i have seen it. I would want him on my team. I don't know that. I would want him at point. Guard and to your point about the question to dock that he stuttered about a second where he got stuck on right. Well maybe you need a pure point guard. Somebody who's six feet three who's pass for. Who brings the ball up and can initiate the from out the top of the right. And maybe ben. Simmons has a different role in the offense as opposed to dribbling the ball all the floor but hey against atlanta all i know is the job that been simmons did on trae. Young was use special man who he averaged. I mean he did such a good job that a tree average twenty nine and ten. He should do job like that on everybody. Yeah but ice tray was shivering cold from three because he couldn't get the three off over six ten do realize that five c a one packet in game in game seven. Yup i do. The demons didn't get in his head until the previous series a little bit but more in the atlanta series. Did it finally just eat him alive. And i will give you this. It's scary how much the demons got a hold of him at the level. He can play a two time all star level that he completely shut down to the point that he didn't just do the lebron. I run from the free throw line. He did the. I don't even want to get close to the basketball. Because i'm afraid somebody's going to hack send me to the free throw line so he didn't even want to touch it. Lebron will touch the ball and make the right play to somebody else because he do me. You compare ben simmons to lebron james. Yeah when it comes you know. There's no fear scared to death of the late game. free throw line. yup yup. Well i'm just wondering how good speaking truth. Lagaan create demons. Only weak and chased away neo. Do we do about those demon. You go shoot. Ten thousand free throws this off season until you get it in your head that i got this stroke that nobody can bother what he was doing. The previous three season. I don't know what he was doing. They say the obama been putting that working so you motive. Aggie twitter clips. He the gym. He's shooting threes coming out on the break and then come game time. what okay. Well he's got a want this a little more than he's wanted it before but when you have talent like he has you cannot let go of this this. You can't just jettison this kind of talent unless you tell me you get somebody back better than ben simmons. But that's going to be hard to do. Even if i don't give somebody that's better. Ben simmons i can get somebody. That's better for this team. Then ben simmons. He doesn't have to be a better player but we'll his role. Will he be better for joylin. Beat would he be better for the team. Abou- brogden would be better for the sixers. Then been filmings play. I'm wrong. I don't know if he's a pure point guard. Yes yes a two guard. He's he's shooter score will you can't you can't have you can't have a lithium lebron james. You can't have your power for the fits. Well they just did it and they and they had a chance. Yup you've got to be. We're going to be joel. Embiid had a torn cartilage. we do. We don't make excuses. Told me coming out so we will be definitely keeping in prize-winning hall of fame journalists. Baylor say will you know marcy. While exhibition game or not tempers are flaring after break popovich and team. Usa lost a second straight game to australia. The ninety one eighty three loss led to assess the encounter between pop and reporter as the legendary coach. Answer a question to him so take a listen for yourself. You ask the same sort of the same family of questions last time. Were you assume things that are not true when you just mentioned blowing these teams out. That's never happened. So i don't know where you get that. Can i finish now average mark. Can i finish my statement to determine. I can i. Can i finish my statement when you. It's not true your average you're going to let me finish my statement or not so you'll be quiet now while i talk then i'll listen to you when you make statements about in the past just blowing out these other teams number one you give no respect to the other teams and i talked to you last time about the same thing. We've had very close games against four or five countries in all these tournaments so the good teams do not get blown out. There are certain games that might happen in one of the tournaments in the world championship olympics gets blown out. What in general nobody's blowing anybody out for the good teams so when you make a statement like that it's like you assume that's what's going on and that's incorrect. There is a lot there shannon. Do you have an issue with how he responded. Pop is upset that they lost skilled. They did and i understand. Ninety tool is not happening. The average margin of victory is giving not going to be sixty seventy points like it was daimler say these other teams the other countries. Just continue to improve the players. They get better to get more confident and they also want to beat us. Badly definitely noticeable. That's true skip up. I'm not saying that. The us should beat nigeria about fifty. I'm not saying that they should be The aussies by twenty five. That's not what the guy's saying he's like they got a sprinkling of nba guys on your roster on their team. You know you got all nba gaz all your team. And you're getting beat. Is the report is bought this team poorly own. It pop. yeah we are not playing. Well we be up looking for this okay. This wasn't just about losing that game. This was gregg popovich being greg pop and he has made it harder and harder for me to route to a team. I've love the san antonio spurs. I love me some tim. Duncan and some mon-. Ooh and some tony parker but popular dish has become harder and harder to love because he's gone farther and farther toward belittling and insulting and bullying members of the media. Who are asking legit since authentic legit questions in just trying to do their jobs in the greatest irony of this whole thing is that look. Last night i was ashamed. That gregg popovich was representing my country. Because he is used his platform many times before to criticize. Scathingly donald trump. Fine with that but the irony of that is that he has turned into donald trump in bullying reporters who just ask legit questions of him. And this was all ask you okay. He's a pass true. I'll give you the and again. I don't know why became look like that. Who'll lovable curmudgeon. Pop well how do you let this ban get away with this. And then now on more of an international stage joe vardon is a fine reported. The athletic and he was just asking a very legitimate fact based questions saying hey. In twenty-six you played five exhibitions and you won them by an average. He wasn't the coach obviously but team. Usa won them by an average of forty one point. So how do you feel. Now that that you just lost your first two exhibitions fairly convincingly you lost well that's a legit question and it's almost trump like we're pop tries to actually change the facts and rework them to his own way. You don't blow our team and he's saying that didn't happen that's not true. Yes and then. He tried to make the case which we didn't hear in the bite that we heard but tried to make the case that you don't insult these teams by blowing them out. We'll they didn't twenty sixteen worked. It gave you momentum right leading into the olympics so for me. It's just hard to stomach that he gets away with this and it makes them even more lovable. Because now that he's on the international stage he's like turning into bobby knight morale. Bobby knight used to be the pan am games in trouble. It's like one thing after another. It's kinda mad scientist. Talked him for me. I'm not saying they should blow. These teams are understand that you have more. Nba players all these teams now. What say ninety two and ninety six in two thousand eight this offer more international game. I'm not fade. But if you okay with the way they're playing because it's not okay pa. I'm not sure he's the right man for the this time in this job. I'm not sure i've told you before that. What is seventy two. I think there have been times over. The last couple of years with the spurs made the playoffs. And i'm thinking you lose your fastball. Little bit are you doing your way or the highway jim. Doug told reporters. He wants valid. When tim walks out that door. I'm walking right behind. Him hadn't happened yet where you want. You want to show that he could win without tim and no policy another without those brought. You have full hall of famers forrest ballot. I think you'll just like they don't follow very good point. Very good point i mean. His behavior is unacceptable. I i mean everybody sees this. This roster is poorly constructed. I'm not saying they're not. This is not a knock on the players with the people that put this together. Okay we agree but they just don't go well together we'll see the frustration has only gonna if they continue to not get they need. That went tonight guys. Let me just say lamar. Jackson was having a bit of fun recently as he took a break from in front of the balls play corner and receiver against fans will. The video of the raven star went viral on social media. They always a bit of a head. Scratching moves is. Jackson is on the verge of a mega extension with baltimore so shannon. How big of a problem do you have with. The video becomes skip. I dues on the verge of getting generational wealth. Two hundred million dollars. And i know you know. You just haven't do you know. I mean you asphalt a third move. You know a non-contract injury. We just saw sorry we saw jamal. Murray we saw guys lose a season. Lamar mean we've seen lamar. Do some risky things. We saw driving excessive speeds. We seem playing on the beach. The mar is not worth it. You are a professional athlete. You don't have anything to prove. Brought back get this money and when it's all saying building if you want to go out there and have a camp and you want to challenge these young guys have a better. Don't miss your money of being dumb. Lamar you better than this brother. I just don't get these guys doing stuff like this. I hear every word you just said. But what i love most about lamar is what you fear. Most forum. he grew up. Being one of those kids were all he ever wanted to do. Every day of his life growing up in miami. You can go outside every day. No matter what is he just wanted to play sports outside. It could be football basketball baseball. Whatever the sport was he just wanted to go play and so when he sees this and they asked him to help out a little bit because it looked like it was almost a clinic. We're we're us teaching technique all sudden. He's playing quarterback and he's playing receiver is pretty dangerous with with kids. Because they're they're middle aged kids were there they can. They can run a little bit. They weren't little kids. They were more eighty ninth grade. Kids grow up in the environment and a lot of us grew up in to get out. And do i got and not put yourself and not have to put yourself in. Harm's way you don't get out. I gotta put yourself back at harvard. Wait by being back doing that. I'm not saying good not go back and teat. That's not what i'm saying. Please don't confuse deny i got it. But but he. He won the mvp of this league. That's that's hard to do. Yes and generational wealth is at his fingertips right now but deep down hard hearts he'd used baller man he just wants to play balls. I'm we'll get hurt. Skip we just saw the guy. That's the broncos. He tore healy's eighty lows. Ten million dollars off the phone. If lamar if you get hurt get hurt on the ravens type was gonna get hurt onto bronco ravens dan. I'm not doing anything pulls i'm asking. I'm not doing any paying this jeopardize my money. Lamar is not as you. Tell me. that's worth it. And i know people all just have employed is all fun and games and then you go to say if something would happen. Knock on wood. It didn't happen. He shouldn't have done that. I got it will. At least he has some humility about him. He's still believes he can go associated with those kids and teach them like he's still one skill. Let them see that. I was in this day. Who don't put yourself in harm's way i got it see this. Tom brady is hungry for another super bowl in tampa and it appears as teammate whilst humid to in a viral workout video. Brady's trusted offensive. Tackle trista warps was seen to and eight inch. Box jumps with a weighted vest on hard to imagine anyone getting past him. This season sheehan done this and how fortunate to have him can.

"The poll question and the results from the first hour. Would you rather see team. Usa play close games and possibly lose or roll through the field. Six four percent want to see close games. I wanna see close games and whether we want to or not. It seems like that's what we're going to see until the final team the final roster is Going to be brought together after the nba finals. Because you got a few players who are playing in the nba finals right now but losing to australia last night and then argentina is next up just an exhibition. But judging from gregg popovich reaction to a reporter's question got got a little salty with joe. Vardon and joe will join us. We'll that exchange for you coming up. And i want to tell everybody to calm down when it comes to team. Usa you lose to nigeria. And then you lose to australia. Last night there exhibitions and it is worth pointing out that. This team is in fully formed yet. Some of the players still plane. But it's a wakeup call and it's an entertainment wakeup call as well. Because i would not have watched that game last night except for mclovin gave me a heads up and said hey team. Usa is losing to australia. I did say to him what sport because i was thinking wait team. Usa playing again and they're losing. I'll watch tonight watch a little bit back and forth with the all star game. Nba finals resumes on wednesday night. But you know every country seems to have a handful of nba players now and you know you got teams team. Usa used to be bigger and more athletic naked. Play defense they can get out on the break in run now. I don't think there's any reason to panic yet. Because the team is gonna look a lot different when it gets to tokyo but it just a subtle reminder team. Usa is going to actually have to work to win a gold medal this year. Yeah mclovin and australia. If they had ben simmons to if i don't know if that would be good or bad but he's not even playing there like it's going to be a tight field. There's a lot of good players. Well ben would help them now. They may not need him or one him now but yeah i mean come on. He's still one of the top twenty players in the nba. This is a total fantasy but people were joking on twitter. Is lebron james going to come into space. jam said. How much could they use. Lebron steph curry jimmy butler feel like you need the older players to come in with some experience. Well as i mentioned in the first hour if this had been lebron's team last night that had lost these two games he would be getting roughed up. You know we forget like we pick and choose when we want to recognize kevin durant as the best player the game and you know when he wins. Then we're like oh my god. Kevin durant the best player in the game when he loses. We don't go man. Kevin durant laws. Lebron it's every single game is a referendum on his legacy and look..

"The current state of baseball. Now back to first things first first things. First the greek freak playing. Maybe his best basketball ever is he. Now the favorite to win finals. Mvp shohei otani a bona fide stars. See the biggest attraction in sports. Today and lebron and chris bosh. Oh what a nice embrace at the space jam premier. Good tuesday morning. Welcome their first things first. General dick right brandon martius. Kevin wilde's snick wherever you like three feet to the right back then and you already gotten walked the red carpet on where you were. Cowards off i had to cancel my flight. La to fill in for him. So i couldn't go portly genetic. What's on your forehead. What happened you saw me. Because i sell on the worst. And it's why we love you nick rice. We we start this morning in a very loving way With a story. That really should not have been a story team. Usa basketball once thought to be a lot at this summer's olympics. Hey look now. we're not sure we're not so sure. So many big names on their roster and yet they stumbled out of the gate next edition. Play losing to nigeria over the weekend and losing again to australia. Last night and that australia team led by joe ingles and patty mills breaking beating. Katie dane tatum bradley. Beal slough of other stars team. Usa head coach gregg popovich took issue with reporters level of concern after the game. Take a listen. Healy also answer. Their question asked the same sort of question. The same family of question last time where you assume things that are not true. When you just mentioned you know blowing these teams out. That's never happened. When you make statements about in the past blowing out these other teams number one you give no respect to the other teams and i talked to you last time about the same thing. We've had very close games against four or five countries in all these tournaments so the good teams do not get blown out. There are certain games that might happen in one of the tournaments in the world championship olympics. Were somebody gets blown out in general. Nobody's blowing anybody out for the good teams so when you make a statement like that it's like you assume that's what's gone on and that's incorrect. Are nick yard pop. How worrisome is all this. Oh it's more than moderately concerning and let me defend joe vardon. Who was the reporter there. That was the subject of gregg popovich scorn. First of all you know the most concerning part of that whole little press conference was when gregg popovich was able to reference. Joe vardon's question from the last time the us lost as a massive favourite two days ago. He's like we went over this two days ago. Yeah buddy we did. That's why there's the concern here. And kevin wild wanted us to talk about the us. Nigeria game yesterday. And i was like who cares. It was a one off. It doesn't matter. And then they get beat by the boomers who i think wild futures bet on for the olympics double credit to him there as well. I listen hot to this. Part of this is popovich the. Us had lost one exhibition game from ninety two to win. Pop took over as coach after twenty. Eighteen twenty nine thirty now. They've now lost three exhibition games. So that's odd in somewhat concerning also in the two thousand twelve olympics the us one by an average margin of victory of thirty two points in the twenty sixteen olympics the us one by an average margin of victory of twenty two points. So yeah there were a lot of blowouts. And i know folks are going to say the world catching up. And that's true would agree and the roster is not that great and that's true degree but can we show the top five guys on these two teams and you're going to recognize the top by australian guys 'cause they all have. Nba experience if the team on the left were an nba team. It would probably be the favourite to win the title if the team on the right. We're an nba team. It would be the worst team in basketball so this should not happen. I don't care about fatigue. Lack of continuity win. When you've got your tatum is your worst starter or your forth worth started picking on draymond and the other teams best. Starter is joe ingles. Should he lose and so brand in all of a sudden while. I'm not buying wild australia. Futures bet my slovenia blue gudang futures ticket y fifty six to one. All of a sudden feels a little live. So i know the. Us is a lock for the gold anymore. At this point. I think it is somewhat concerning. Well listen i'm kind of torn here. I mean i go back to two thousand and nineteen. Kobe bryant saying look. It's not about the rest of the world catching up to us. It's the rest of the world has already caught up to us for quite some time. And it's on america to embrace that and understand it and we're going to win some moving for and we're gonna lose some. That's from the great late kobe bryant. That's what he just said two years ago. But then when you look at it and then you have a point. Why is he has a point. This is reminiscent of the team nightmare. That's what this is reminiscent of and you know who led that team. Nick nick writes boy. Bron james two thousand and four. That was the worst team we've ever seen. And this is close to that you look at the roster all do liked the roster but they really embrace small boss for this this team. Usa team in this roster but at the end of the day man losing to exhibition games back to back. That is a problem and like i say is reminiscent of team nightmare. We went from dream team. Two team nightmare to the re redeem team. And i don't know what you want to call this. So i'm kind of torn here while. Okay so i let me get out my obligatory ben. Simmons should play on the boom squad and it would help him immensely in his development and confidence as if he was with this australian team. I just want to get that out. I'm never letting go. It's the right move. In ben. simmons made the now that that's gone. I will tell you why. I am wearing all right. You hit workout. H i think there's too is i m hit worried and here's why number one.

"Pretty concerned for the bucks right. Now yeah what did you make last night. I had said this before. You came on the air. Regards to leonard in that if he is the cake not the icing. The cake was made in san antonio before he got there. The cake was made in toronto. Lowery was the sole of the team to for both. He could be a shotmaker but the clippers made him the cake. He's the guy right and when he's the guy you know raja bell said at the other day on the show. The lines of communication get broken allies in it because he's not communicative even his injury. Now joe no one. He's gonna play. We don't know what it is. He doesn't have an agent. So is the reality of what the clippers have been the last two years which is disappointing in the regular season should be a higher seed. Don't get there and in the postseason you cross your fingers. If is your guy. This is kind of what you'll be some nights great other nights a question. Yeah i guess it's funny. I've been listening to you for years and years and years and in a way the you come up with some of these analogies and Choas the cake. I you know. I i go back to the twenty thousand nine hundred run with the raptors and he changed them in the playoffs and he was the most dominant player in that city's internet series and he the way he just controlled the the tempo and pace Made me really believe that he he might have been the best player in the nba. At the time you know. I think when you start talking about these last two years though. I'm not sure the you can know exactly what to make of it Because yes last season was a disaster but it was in a test tube down there and disney and then this year i mean i don't know how hurt he was but i you know that it looked like he really did twist his knee and and You know everybody's getting hurt throughout the league. So i think you said it as well If you're the clippers you of course you want him back and you wanna run it back. I just think they need to upgrade at the point. Guard position yes. They need a little bit more shooting and they'll be. Yeah no i. I think they're really good basketball team. And i think paul george and colli both have some incredible similarities. They're just big long strong wings. That can get you bucket. They can get you. Stop twice the better player and to your point. I think they do need help at the point guard position for years. I've always had a soft spot for athletes. You know peyton. Manning was the number one high schooler. Then he goes to tennessee football power and then he goes to bill polian hall of fame executive and it's a real linear experience and it doesn't mean that i don't think payton's great but that's rare like it just kind of magic. Johnson inherits kareem and the bus family. It's like boy. That's a good way to go but chris. Paul goes to new orleans. There's katrina he leaves. He's going to go to the lakers. The commissioner said no. He goes to the clippers that he goes to the tanking thunder and i last night felt like he deserved it. He you know what i mean. I i felt for. Chris like this guy has had one nonsense obstacle. You followed him for years. Have you always understood. How great is or did you need this series to kind of you know for you to go. Wow he special. How you viewed him. No i thought he was a special player for a long time. And i think he's had a reputation as somebody who can rub co-stars the wrong way. He can be grading can be demanding but you always saw it on the floor. I think for me chris. Paul's legacy was an unfortunate because he just got hurt at the worst times. I mean the hamstring injury and whatever year that was with the rockets absolutely cost them a chance at the at the finals. They they had the warriors on the ropes in that did him in and what to me in part. What makes this run. So remarkable now for chris paul is that he had two things. Go wrong. That in years past would have maybe derailed him. I mean he had the shoulder injury against the lakers. And then this cove in nineteen stuff and instead of having either one of those things derail him in derail his team which is again what has happened so many times in the past They were able to hang on and wait till he could come back and get healthy and reassert himself and then last night in the second half obviously maybe as good as he's ever been just an incredible story. Yeah you know it's interesting. You're going to be covering team. Usa basketball this summer in vegas and in tokyo and we were saying that this week so damian lillard goes doesn't get heavily recruited goes to weaver state and then he goes there for years. Nobody pays attention then. He goes to portland geographically isolated and even though he's been great he yours feel he feels a little different. You know geographically. He didn't get the love early now. He's up in the pacific northwest and now he gets invited to the cool kids party and i think he's a great guy but we know the history of the redeem team 2016 when dudes play together. They're recruiting each other and you're going to be there covering it. I do believe it's going to have a massive influence on damian lillard who i think it is hard as a loyal guy. Is that something you're gonna watch closely just kind of the whole dame situation because i would be. I would be fascinating to see who he hangs with who. He's comfortable with who he plays wells with. Yeah i think that's certainly one of the story lines. One of the driving storylines going into las vegas. I didn't think it's interesting colin. I mean first of all the reason. It's a story line. Of course is he is quasi already you know signaling that he's about ready to ask to be to be moved which we know now in the league that that happens that those requests get granted so the question becomes aware. And so you're right. He comes into this situation. Where historically super teams come together but the interesting thing to me was is the average age per player on team. Usa year something like twenty eight and a half twenty nine so on average these players are in their prime and in kind of inching towards the the later stages of that prime so i don't know long-term who is going to formulate the next super team when it comes to damian lillard though he's going to get a chance to be around These dynamic personalities He's already close with gregg popovich. They've been forming a relationship over the last year. And he's going to get a chance to play for him. He's never had an experience like that before. And you're right. I mean he's he's gonna be he's gonna have a chance to become celebrated in a way that he really hasn't been before on a stage that he hasn't played on before it'll be interesting to see how much of the limelight he commands with. Kevin durant kevin durant is already. He's about to become the all time leading scorer for points in history he in his last game. He scored forty eight. He's obviously back at the top of his game. So we'll see who the alpha male is on this club but he it's it's gonna be a wild ride for damon and certainly the thing that i'm paying attention. You has really interesting. You bring that up at the average players almost twenty nine so these guys are in the championship years. They've made their money. That's not the discussion. It's not an money. It is a dude. You got win now. You got your money. You've got your second. He's got his music. He's got his money. He's got his legacies a first ballot. You wanna win that. That's fascinating twenty nine years old. The average age interesting stuff all right. Joe vardon senior writer nba the atlantic. I'll be reading your stuff and promoting. It will have you on again. "Hour. Joe Vardon breaking down what we saw last night, which was an embarrassing fourth quarter between the sons and the clips, but expands, don't care because they're one win away from getting to the N B a finals. He'll also help preview what's coming later today. Trae Young get back on track at home against the Milwaukee Bucks, but we got to go out to the hotline right now. Welcome in Terrific college football national writer, but he's interested in just about everything. Bill Bender joining the show, bill. Welcome. Glad to have you on And unfortunately we like to start off with some softballs. Like what do you think of having to vaccinate players in college? Yes, That's something that obviously popped up this week and It's going to put some pressure on a lot of college football teams because we know how ravaged last season was by covid 19. I mean, you could even take it to the College football playoff championship game where Ohio State was missing a couple key players and I think it's going to add yet another storyline to what's been an extremely busy off season in college football and Put pressure on all players to get vaccinated. Yeah, My my thought on this has been that I don't I don't think it's the place of college football coaches or programs to mandate the vaccine. But I also can't fathom a world where The next Sammons double Sweeney's Ryan days. Coach Chefs keys. I can't fathom a world in which if their team could have a competitive advantage and making sure the players stay eligible. That's going to go any other way than every single player down the down to the trainers getting vaccinated. I just can't see that not happening at those places. Well, I mean, you and I both close to imagine a world where Ohio State. What happened into the state The other night happens to Ohio State the night before the Big 10 championship game. In a 14 format. Or before a playoff semifinal. They People here would lose it and I live in Columbus, obviously so, and places like Tuscaloosa, every SEC school, Um you know they they would definitely lose their minds, so I think it's something that's going to be Still out there when the college football season starts, and then you're going to start the question again Should the stadiums before etcetera should everybody in the stadium be vaccinated, so It's as close as I want to believe that the Covid 19 thing is over. It's not. I mean, it obviously showed itself at the memorial and then again at the College World Series. I'll say exactly what's going to happen. Uh, the stands will be at full capacity and it'll be the honor system. That's what it's going to be and the players are going to be tested. That's what's going to happen this year. I don't know if it will extend beyond that. But I think this year that's exactly what will happen. So Bill Bender joined us on the hotline. So you wrote extensively about N I l You've been writing extensively about that for those that are just waking up out of a coma. Its name image likeness. Uh, what was considered to be a big blow to the N C. Double a Issued by the Supreme Court unanimous decision. They all agreed on something for once. What is your main takeaway? Let's get started with this are Players are student athletes going to be able to get paid during the recruiting process. This year or are we jumping to conclusions? Think we're jumping to conclusions on the recruiting part because it's going to happen slowly. I think it's going to start with Social media type things. I tiktok cameo of those kinds of things that the old hats that are saying that this is going to ruin college football zone even totally understand, Um Think it'll happen incrementally because there's so many grey areas right now, when you're looking in an environment where I think there's only seven states that have Legislation that Will be effective July 1st, But it's also seven states that contain 23% of the college football FBS programs, so and I know we were all paying attention to that in Ohio this week. Uh, it's no coincidence, either. Right, so I think it's going to happen slowly and everybody's going to kind of play it by your early What college football looks like. Now, versus the next to recruiting cycles. I wouldn't be surprised if that's a big part of the recruiting process. Well, you wrote and you talk to somebody who waited on this that talked about whether it's a $10 gift card to pizza place, or it's $100,000 deal with a regional car dealership. All these things are going to be opportunistic. People think that it's going to be the wild, Wild West. I know that all these programs all these schools are talking to compliance. But what even is compliance right now, considering we just were handed a landmark At least when it comes to student athletes, a landmark Supreme Court ruling. Yeah, they're trying to educate their student athletes on Hey, greatly accelerated timetable and I talked to a couple compliance officers about that, and I think their biggest concern is that everything gets Disclosed, so there's not undisclosed It's something that an athlete does, Whether it is that I guess the pizza card or, you know, I've always used the regional car dealership example. With athletes like Ohio State players started Popping up on regional dealership commercials. I wouldn't blink and I, you know, I see enough former players on Ohio State commercial That doesn't bother me at all. So I think that's The athlete that's going to benefit the most are the ones that Can capitalize on their college fame before they get out of school. I mean, not all these guys go to the NFL, and I think that's a good thing and I think eventually Once they sort out the gray areas, it's going to be a good thing for college football is long as they disclosed everything and That's a tough thing. One of the guys taught me one of the hard parts of the, uh Can't get students to fill out a ticket for him. How are they going to get them to fill? It disclosed all this stuff that they're going to do? Well, So what happens to the N C double A Now I mean to me. I've wondered whether the power five we're going to break free and even condense below that and basically say, Hey, this many institutions maybe it's maybe it's 40 this many institutions are taking college football seriously. We all want to be on the same playing field, and we don't want to necessarily cut in these smaller conferences like the Mid American Conference. Another D one conferences, uh, so that they could just make sure to keep all the money in a pool for just those schools. Do you see the fizzling out? Because of this ruling. I think they've got work to do because they keep getting a few teeth knocked out with each thing you know, rather than I l or the Supreme Court ruling, which is kind of that ruling, this kind of Related to en el but kind of not that seems like a even bigger picture. Question to the to so I don't know if it will dissolve, but they're definitely going to have to adapt quickly to all these changes and not They are the world's easiest punching bag. They have done some things that are right. But here's one of the things that you know people were saying they need to do the transfer portal. So many athletes are in the transfer portal right now, that might not end up a division one programs, so I think it can work both ways is when they get pushed to do something that student athlete friendly then They get blamed when that student athlete friendly endeavor maybe gets out of control a little bit. I think that's something to keep in mind with an I l and the next Good question is can the university's compensates athletes And how do you do that, while maintaining an athletic department? Bender joining us on the hotline weighing in on this as we speak, so I'm curious. Whether As of right now. Because the Supreme Court can only do so much in their ruling, and we saw with justice Kavanaugh had to say a scathing rebuke of the N C double A and some of its principles and it's not all that different from stuff that You know, guys like you have been writing guys like me have been talking about for years. But with that said, how much money are we really talking about here? Are we going to instantly see Quarterbacks get $100,000.200,000 dollars deals with like you said. Those regional car dealerships. Is that even permissible right now. How would they get in trouble for something like that? Given this ruling? Yeah. I mean, these are the big questions are going to have and with certain states having in certain states not What? That you brought the competitive advantage thing. You want to talk about a competitive advantage being able to do that for your student athletes while your rival can't um That could happen. So I think I'm kind of wanted to see how the conference has handled this conference by conference because it's going to be a headache to.

Joe Vardon Bill Bender $100,000 Trae Young $10 Columbus July 1st 23% Ohio College World Series Ohio State Milwaukee Bucks $100,000.200,000 Tuscaloosa last night seven states Mid American Conference this week This year Kavanaugh

"That's a problem. And so maybe. I gotta get him to someone to get him the confidence not only at the free throw line but the shoot jumpers because we see the instagram posts any off season. He's draining jumpers against you. Know some accounts at the ymca or whoever is playing with. He's just gotta get the confidence to do it in an nba game. So i would look at several things before. I just blow it up unless unless i get a great trade for him but i'm not just blowing it up to blow it up couple minutes left. Zion williamson the athletic shams. There's many things you can do assign a shorter version of the contract right remember. Lebron did that with his second. Big deal in cleveland so instead of sanity for five he signed for three pave the way for him to go to miami so you can do adding keep the organization on alert also it benefits obviously the player to sign that deal because you get the most money and you get that security and the reason why a lot of guys on that i deal. Colin is because that's when it's really life changing generational change. And i should say money are so. It's hard to tear that down or your first deal but it also benefits the organization obviously for the security of. Hey we can keep you if we want it can get ugly and we might be forced to trade you but we got some leverage if you sign long but the other thing is this. It's better for you if you have to trade. Because now he's making money so you have to trade him to a situation where you're getting back max. Money a return so that means you can get back of star caliber player. Potentially if you have to deal in whereas now he's making two million dollars a year so if you had to trade him now you're not getting equal value..

"It's a bad thing. No sort like quote being aware of the video. When somebody is quote aware of a video, it's never that they're aware of. Ah highlight video. It's not like they're aware of something that awesome that happened. If somebody says they're quote aware of a video, that means somebody was in a bless you. That means somebody was in the wrong place at the wrong time, doing the wrong thing and probably put themselves in that spot. We're aware of it. Speaking of Nash, if you thought that statement from the Nets was bad, check out the latest response from the coach yesterday, Joe Vardon asked Nash if you assure or least confident the Kyrie would return at some point this season. Sure, you know, like I said, right now, I gotta focus on coaching this team and get the best out of them. So I can't Make any, You know. Predictions are prognostications about things that are outside of this building this evening. Oh, that's not good. That's below. Not good. Noticed the question was nine. Good. Are you sure the Kyrie will play this week? Are you sure? Kyra. We will play this month. The question was. Are you sure that he'll play this season? And the response was my, uh, sure, Sure. Exactly a stone cold lock, was it? Not exactly. I'll take it to the bank. Which makes us thank you more weird. More Kyrie. Look, I don't want take one step back. I want to give Kyrie credit for this. Kyrie is a strong record off philanthropy off giving back. That's not up for debate here time and time again. Kyrie has stepped up for people in need, and that's awesome. I want to give him that. But it doesn't change the fact that what he's doing right now is really bizarre. And really, Kyrie and really on brand, and his brand is being weird. You see the Kyrie experience. It's like this wild mix this wild blend of generosity and selfishness off wanting to talk a lot to the media, but then blaming the media for what he says. Are being a great player, but being a really strange teammate. And right when you thought that it couldn't get any more Kyrie Maman outdid himself last night. Any more time to finish that thought. What he's doing, Carrie. Thanks. And when you ask the coach, are you confident? We're going to see him again this year and responses? Um, sure, sure. That's not very encouraging. So, Carrie, what's going on, man? I mean, if you have personal issues, respect, I get that which is showing up at your sister's birthday party mask lists and then on a zoom call. He's a volunteer of an organized event for a candidate for district attorney for Manhattan. That was last night, right before tip. Is that weird? Ah, sure. Um, sure. Four. Yea, Louis Kahn. But, uh I'm still sit. Oh, honey,.
