"We're seeing how Rogers is kind of in the role of a far. I spoke to Brett about that yesterday. And people are thinking maybe Mariota could be in the role of Tannahill with Derek Carr in the role of Mariota. Going into this season. How do you? How would you handle that as a narrative? Mike First and foremost our cars our quarterback and John and I love what he did last year. And he completed seventy percent of his passes and he had a great quarterback rating. And do we think he can get better? Shore your three and Gruden's offense. We expect them to get better But when you're looking at a guy like Mariota the cool thing for John and I when we had the Morio conversation is remember rich. We were both in television in Mariota's draft year. Gone and I. So if you're Marcus Mariota and you want to know what Mike May View. All you gotTa do is go back and check check. Check the tape just like you. Hey Yeah they turned the tables on the evaluator. Now they're evaluating John and I and you know I it's really Kinda cool because we had some great conversations with Marcus about that. He knows we believe in both Marcus. Mariota the person more importantly and Marcus. Mariota the football player. And you know I think. We've got to rebuild them a little bit. He beat up. He had to get some surgery after the season You gotTA clean up some technique from the ground up. I think John's the right guy for that. And we just could not resist adding that kind of talent to our quarterback why that is the the question is yours. Well because that's what I talked about with Howie Roseman the other day. Is that when you choose somebody and packers Adam that conversation my lord or they have in that conversation right now when. You've got an already installed quarterback veteran somebody who is associated with team. Somebody who's well paid to be associated with that team. And then you have another quarterback at your job as general manager to fill out a roster and make sure that the positions taken care of should that quarterback not be able to make snap or falter and. I guess that that's the question. Mike is how you view the role of quarterback number two in your job. Well we believe that where we are as an offense right now is we ought to be very competitive. Offensively we ran the ball really well. We've got a big strong offensive line. We all mended the receiver position in the draft in free agency. We feel like we should be big strong powerful tough and more dynamic team this year and I think our job John and mine is to ensure that if something were to happen to their that we continue to be that same team and we think Marcus gives us the best opportunity to do. Just that all right Mike appreciate the time you know and I tried to get your your home draft setup from you you know many of your colleagues Implied you're the only one that took a shot from outside the window and And and that's all I got Can you describe and then you're like I know what you meant by the way I'm putting that text up on the screen right now when I called you out. I know what you meant with four dots. I mean what would you have? Can you at least describe it? There were two reasons there number one was that I'm in a little dining room rented Alameda. Health that I have five whiteboards surrounding me with close with Alvin magnets and taken a shot anywhere in that room. You would've seen a white board with a bunch of names on it and then I just tell you that have a little. Have some big words and you did you see. Did you see Bella checks? Did you see his nantucket setup? Did you see that on? Espn Mike I did. And I was happy for bill. Manny all you had was a laptop on the table it looks like to me and a dog and his dog. Nike. The dog who's feeding treats A. He's a much smarter than I am. I I need thousands of pieces of paper and you know I mean builds amazing and you know as you know respect. I have for him by now. So your your old school your post. Its and whiteboards in Greece boards and magnets. You're just a surprise. You always had like third grade scholastic black and white charcoal notebook that you brought with all your notes sitting next to Moya. Yeah it was the Lord Marble notable. Why left-handed scratched because I used to have to take because I'm left handed. And he had to go through the whole binder thing you know and then it looks like a claw when you're writing but yeah that was our lady. Lord I've brought it with me and the funny thing is rich and you'll see this as your kids get older is that my kids. Crushed me for for those books that I carry around notes in and now I look at both of them has grown adults and they both carry around the same things in their bag. Die That you pay it forward Mike. "NBC SNL more. How're you doing over there? Christopher Yard Yeah I'm great. You should be great trophies. In the case on a billion billion like I said before this is the ultimate and bill we trust moment I mean I think we all do in New England. I think I speak for everyone in the five states. And we're going to let Iraq. We'll what happens. It's going to be them so I don't know man he's GonNa have to learn by warned by. Fire Dot window has to be what inches by inches right would say no bigger than twelve by twelve. Maybe twelve by and that is a good ten yards away beautiful kiddos. I mean do so much worse. Oh yeah he's a real deal bona fide quarterback in the NFL. We could do worse. Who is on the roster and I know unreal and I I know I know that I might have come across looking like slagging on Andy Dalton. I'm not slugging on you want that to be understood. I'm I'm not slang. Andy Dalton. I think he's he's more than a solid quarterback me as a one but he's been the playoff most awarded four times for a team that nobody thinks ever wins. Look what he did. And if you think that it's just the the the any dome has the Gravitational Record Right? If you think it's just a gravitational force of Bengal he did that in the gravitational force pulling the other way his his his games and primetime though were always difficult to watch knock it and that's and that's a very liberal very generous way to put it. That's generous way. Two Point Two thousand twelve to two thousand fifteen. He won ten games each year. Arriving in two thousand thirteen he threw for more than four thousand yards and thirty touchdowns and he's he's a good player but again the reason why I bring it up. Is that you in New England spent from high atop Mount Brady High Atop Mount Pious. I guess to use the damage phrase high atop the Mount Patriot. Look down upon. The Andy Dalton is at the world down your nose and down everything. We've looked down everyone. I understand that's why I'm saying. Welcome to the rest of us now. On behalf of all thirty one of the Fan Bases Man. If the pats go twelve and four this year it's GonNa be I will be. I will be terrible to be around if that happens. Just heads up. Pats four get even better. Oh God what. A Great Edna segment. We're back in just twenty seconds with MICMAC. Do you own or rent your home..

"Let's just say some teams have the ability to evaluate players before the fifth year option gets picked up say today's Kansas City chiefs. Move which you could have etched in stone. Mr Sharpie years years ago that they were going to pick up the fifth year option. Patrick which became official today after game one homemade or or after his start. When are they ever in his rookie season in week? Seventeen in Denver. They're gonNA have to figure that out Clark. Starting now there's no doubt about it and farve knows exactly what's going on which is why. I think that was news. Yesterday is because we all feel it and sense it and the packers have opened this. Pandora's box the question is does love have the ability to get through all this? The mental toughness that Rogers did and become like Rogers or he's been compared physically homes. If that happens then all this conversation will have just been that conversation if not then it is absolutely what my English teacher used to call a harbinger sign of things to come. That's why obviously farve made news here yesterday because everybody senses what he has to say is the truth that Rogers might finish somewhere else. He finished my sentence for me. Far didn't let me finish the question. You know what was coming and also said that it's not rodgers job to mentor Jordan. Love which I will play that sound bite for Dion Sanders later and I know that directly Indians wheelhouse kind of like a league. Guterman lefty lefty pitch back in spring training that he raked for a triple right and dion hot zone. That'll be later on when he also precedes. Matthew mcconaughey but coming up next one of the news. Makers because he makes the picks for the Los Angeles Raiders my Buddy Mike. Mayock live on.

"Show Chris Brockman. Mike Del. Tufo good to see you. My on air producer and audio executive to see you. I look a little bit of news. A little bit of news made by our Country Front Brett. Farve here on this program yesterday. and we'll talk about that with Dion Sanders when he joins us at the top of our final hour on this program. We have not one but two alliterative M.'s. As guests I up Mike Mayock last up. Matthew mcconaughey totally different. I would say polar opposites on the scale of pop culture. The general manager of Your Loss Rate Vegas Raiders. Longtime friend using do shows like this very often but Not many shows like this or hosted by someone goes away back with Mike. Mike was a guy who called the packers drafting Aaron Rodgers. The twenty four th overall back in the day he nailed that in his mock draft or did and Babe Ruth type called shot in terms of evaluating talent in the NFL. Not a myth Joe Staley the all pro offensive tackle of the San Francisco. Forty niners retired on the final day of the draft leading to Trent Williams acquisition. You will be joining us in the very end of our first hour. And then dion will be joining us Again at the top of our third hour. I'll just want to put a quick pin in the far stuff for second because it is a possibility that the next quarterback of the New England patriots as Po popping free on the free agent market. Now Chris Brockman and I'll remind the NBC viewers who may not have seen this because we were not on NBC S. N. As of yet when Tom Brady signed with the Tampa. Bay buccaneers what I said to you when he signed with the Tampa Bay buccaneers and the rest of people of your ilk mind folks from fine folks from New England the root for the New England Patriots. Who More maybe like yourself? Remember The Times of those hard benches of the old foxborough before Gillett had banners and things like backs of seats. And things like that. Yes I told you. Welcome to the rest of us when terms of remembering the old days. Welcome back to the rest of us for all those millennials who only know championships and Brady and Bella check. I said welcome to the rest of US time. Welcome to the rest of the National Football League and two that I add today's news that Andy Dalton is free or about to be free fly be free Andy Dalton thank you for the memories in Cincinnati. But we've got JOE BOROUGH JOE EXOTIC. The Tiger King is now here from Lsu Tiger nation. I think it's official. He's been all right there. You go seventeen point. Seven million right off of the cap in Cincinnati and now Dalton is free to sign with another team like say New England that has only one point seventy stuart Scott phrases spandex thin. He always used to say when he referred to something that wasn't very large SPANDEX thin one point seven million in capital which is six hundred thousand dollars more than what tomorrow's guest in this very slot. Jameis Winston who will be joining us the top of our NBC `send broadcast on Friday. Show James Winston your signed for one point one million in New Orleans to backup drew brees threw for five thousand yards last year. And I understand the turnovers Gloria but this guy can wing it all right now. He can see the surgery which I can't wait to ask him about tomorrow. One point one million he signs a New England in New Orleans Dalton I know has some leverage potentially because his former offensive coordinator is now the offensive coordinator in in Jacksonville. When there's maybe a James Winston Jay gruden marriage so put it all together. And maybe he goes there. Maybe he's got leveraged. He'll be too expensive for New England but the mere fact that we're talking about Dalton as a possibility to quarterback the New England patriots and it is something that the Patriots should have to consider and something that New England Patriots fans will have to do the mental gymnastics to embrace APP. Doing them right now. Charlie Weis was on this program few weeks ago. Sadat would be the perfect fit of all of the possible veteran free agent quarterbacks on the market and now here it's a possibility and the mental gymnastics that you and Patriot nation will have to undergo brings back once again for me in this chair to say to this microphone. Welcome to the rest of us in the National Football League. Yeah I don't like being with the rest of US liked having number twelve back there. Too Bad stinks on behalf of the other thirty one fan bases too bad. Is this what you guys had to go through every off-season almost sitting around wondering what the coaches thinking? What the Front Office is thinking. How'd you guys survive? I don't know welcome to the rest of us. Yeah I mean I like Andy Dalton. He's got more career touchdown. Pass Troy Aikman Bradshaw. Joe Nemeth more yards than a Lotta Hall of famers. Did you didn't know that before today. Did you up because you know I was potentially twitching story. Great player first of all hair. Great human being ascertains by the way. Oh my gosh. He's had a great human awesome. I know he'd be a perfect person to put in the New England areas of face front member and look at what he's doing with his beautiful children. I mean he's ready in the backyard. Julian Edelman and I'll tell you what hold on a minute. This one on I snapped. This wants to Nikiel Harry and then this one this one is to Jacoby Myers. Running out of guys are to draft anybody. This will james out of the backfield. Okay Yeah you don't want 'em this wants to whatever tight ends filling in for GRONK. I'll tell you what whoever that guy is. Welcome to the rest of his credit's not a bad idea. Last Twenty Years Anti Talton. Any told him don't even at a second round pick. You can't even throw in the same sentence Jimmy Garoppolo and don't not a bad idea to the rest of US Chris. I'm on behalf of the NFL fan basis. Let me let me represent I think at this point. I mean Tom. Current said it was going to come and I think I've reached it. I've talked myself into just rolling with stem. This might happen. I think we just give him a shot. This year brings and if it's a disaster on the disaster start over his decent if they go eight eight nine and seven you bring them back in twenty one and we'll do it again. I can't believe I'm at that point. Oh it's delightful really is just delightful seriously. Everybody around this country given voice to all those duck boat parades and the red sox and the Celtics even the Bruins get rich there were twelve and I'm assuming the New England Revolution Twelve parades and I'm sure that's fine. What does Nike The dog? Think of anti even though it's not gonNa dog let's get down to it. Here's a little treat for Nike Dog. He's calling little snack him off. He's a little he's a little. He's a little doll treat filled with all sorts of nutrients areas evaluating film Nike Dog. Even the dog won't tell you that's how tight the circle is there. A New England Nike the dog. That's a poker face. We have no idea he could be looking at film could be looking at film of of we have no idea. Welcome to the rest of US honestly on behalf of the other thirty one. Nfl Fan bases. This is so good that I I I mean we made we made. Nfl News around the world here yesterday when Brett farve called in. And I haven't even hit it because I'm just I'm joined this moment so much. I'd rather do this than take a victory lap for this show and there's an iron rich Eisen and Nike Nike. There it is right that what do you think? We're going to release them. What should we do take this treat? If you think it's Dalton. What bill should do is he should put two bowls of food down one told him and just let him decide right and a hydrogen familiar with all due respect. I honestly I say I'm doing this for the GAG. I'm doing this. Get under his skin. This okay well it's working. Please be good man. Please be good. James has gone. James has gone. We'll be talking. We'll be talking with James at this point again tomorrow. I I look forward to chatting with him Jay Mrs Gone. I don't think Cam Newton's walking through that door probably not Be Okay so mike. Mayock will be joining US shortly before I do that. Let's talk about Brett Farve a little bit here. Brett farve had a lot to say. Yesterday we caught a day after he played a little bit of golf and he let us know a no uncertain terms that the Jordan love picked surprised him and that he had spoken to Rogers and was going to keep Most of it if you will all of it quiet. But the exception that he termed Rogers. A little bit surprised by. It said that the that he feels that this will rear. Its ugly head at some point. He even thought it might happen this year. If the packers start slowly if there's a season knock on wood. If you're with me he also did say yesterday that he thinks he's GonNa and elsewhere just like five and I didn't even have to finish the question. Brett beat me to the punch. It's a difficult question but I'm GonNa ask it certainly more difficult to answer since it's looked in the future. It's the old crystal ball and you even said yourself the world you do. You cut me off. You think he will not end his career as a green bay packer. Just like you get tells me no. I think you're finished somewhere else. I guarantee this and I don't know that certain but I guarantee you. It's got the wheels turning Aaron Spine. Which which if if that's the case. Then that means there's a chip on his shoulder towards organization that otherwise was not there and so he all he needs is reason other than this reason to expedite that a Brett farve had to say and for those listening on Sirius. Xm Channel. Two Eleven did say courtesy. The Rich Eisen show on the screen which some others on this Profession aren't doing. It's called a courtesy for a reason. The mothership got it right. They did.

"Hear from Joe Staley as the we originally had just got a statement from the long time Niners offense of linemen but he's been such a fixture for not just San Francisco but for the NFL that I want you to hear his own words what he had to say how tough the ending of the season was as you can imagine there are a lot of people not just his locker room and and the great the guys that play with him who wanted to send him out on a high note winning a Super Bowl before he was done because he suffered through a lot of difficult injuries and a lot of people figured this was going to be the end of his his time in the NFL but there are certainly many people who are sentimental sentimentally who saw eighty reads the sentimental favorite sentimentally so you had your themes are for both of the teams and that generally is the way it goes what you're talking about a a particular team that challenging for a title especially if it's a franchise that's never won a title hasn't won one in a really long time yeah I think about the the nationals we just had Margaret talking about the nationals and she mentioned Ryan Zimmerman Zimmerman is a guy that a lot of people rooting for to finally get that that that World Series as the you know original nat so it in talking with Margaret I wanted to clarify something because she mentions that if you're traveling what's the difference if you're traveling a hundred miles or you're traveling a thousand miles or you're going cross country once you're on a plane you're on a plane and so I was realizing that we were kinda into different phases of the plan okay so the plan that baseball is considering right now as reported by Bob Nightengale of USA today is that there will be three divisions okay that part everybody's on board with well everybody's on board with we're all on the same page when it comes to three divisions and I read you the teams that would be in the three divisions Yankees Mets red Sox nationals Orioles Phillies pirates blue jays rays Marlins so in some cases that's just the east division you wouldn't have the Miami Marlins busing to Baltimore you wouldn't have the Pittsburgh Pirates busing to Toronto that's impractical so yes they would still have to get on planes yeah they were using their home stadiums okay so there's the big yeah the divisions would try to keep many of the natural rivalries together and limit much of the long distance travel so the case should be a given that they don't fly in the case of the New York teams and the red Sox they could easily take a bus or train teams have done that before you know Washington Baltimore Philadelphia you're talking about teams that could get to their destinations relatively easy not having to go through airports or planes so that's the next phase you read through this column with Bob Nightengale there is a very real possibility that these three divisions could start in Arizona Florida Texas okay so the idea right now is that baseball would start in the three pods as soon as they could get baseball players to the point where they're allowed to practice where they're allowed to be on the field course keeping their distance being smart but baseball doesn't want to sequester it's teams all the way through the rest of the summer and into the fall and it likely won't be necessary and so they would storage in these three centralized locations where all the teams would be there using the facilities and it what the reasons why they picked Florida Arizona is because these states these regions are already equipped for spring training for a lot of teams in a relatively small area the cactus league the grapefruit league there's many field there's a lot of different hotels course there are facilities to accommodate because that's what they do every spring when the weather isn't helpful or isn't accommodating in other parts of the country so as I was talking to Margaret she's managing the travel don't know when they would get to that point where they could all play in their home stadiums but originally the first part of this plan would put teams together in a region group them together so they wouldn't have to fly and then who knows at what point they'll be able to get back to their home stadiums the baseball can't do that until all of the cities in all of the states around the country that house baseball stadiums our open and available for a business so you couldn't allow I'll just randomly pick one you couldn't allow the Marlins to have all their games in their home stadium maybe a handful of other teams in the east division or looking at the central division Kansas city or Cincinnati or Minneapolis you couldn't allow but laid out is another option could considering that Georgia has tried to restart even now you couldn't allow some teams to play their home stadiums and all it's all in the interest of keeping a level playing field and the NFL's talked about this too they're not going to re open facilities until every team can re open its facility the pod model the pod model V. three pod model with the three divisions and the teams all in one area would be how they start with the idea that eventually even keeping it means these geographical divisions these teams could end up playing at their home stadiums who knows when that date is who knows when they can make that transition question for every sport with no answer why in and then you got the how we don't have any idea we know that certainly is the a major component of the White House wanting to to get the the economy restarted is to have sports be a part of that that's become very clear and so there should be support there even without fans that could come later or it could not come at all in twenty twenty not sure the baseball determined.
Philadelphia Eagles’ drafting of Jalen Hurts, factoring in Carson Wentz, unprecedented in the NFL
"Gay and day three is complete and the NFL's first ever virtual draft is in the books it's banjo borrowed a tae Crowder the Georgia linebacker the two hundred fifty fifth and final player chosen A. K. A. Mr irrelevant he goes to the New York Giants the most controversial pick could well be the eagles taking Oklahoma quarterback Jalen hurts he says he's eager to get to work in Philadelphia and back up Carson Wentz I'm just a guy that I like to see it through everything that happens in life you know you have joint pain was from at all I'm right now this is I'm in a great opportunity for me hi Sir you know sign I gotta say it on your own you really go to work the Packers also raising eyebrows thing went for a quarterback in this case Utah state's Jordan love not a wide receiver GM Brian good cuts on his club's decision first organ building late show on the pitch after being on the air with the first round for all those kind of you need to be extracted from the get the options if they're small the personal loss the cowboys and Jerry Jones on down excited by their second round choice cornerback Trayvon digs head coach Mike McCarthy likes his work ethic he's so competitive at the breaking point of routes and then does a great job of sitting on the Brady porosity turned himself in to receive some noteworthy trades being made the Redskins and Pro Bowl left tackle Trent Williams to the forty Niners repair fix including this year's fifth rounder William should slide in to replace Joe Staley who retired after thirteen NFL seasons due to a neck
Breaking down Trent Williams' trade to the 49ers
"Trent Williams dealt from the Redskins to the forty Niners for five today in a three next year and we're breaking it down as you just heard the guys drafted by Kyle Shanahan and Trent Williams is a talented guy and if you look at the forty niner list of to do list today are coming into this traffic should say replacement for Buckner check can log the impact wide receiver who can start opposite Deebo Samuel check brand in the UK left tackle replacement for Joe Staley check Trent Williams would yes thanks I I I mean it it's it's it's it's pretty awesome I mean I I'd be it can't be that simple I mean can you just can you just go in the draft in in it that you would think is what you're supposed to do you you you you talk about the team that you know the one that wins the NFC west you go to the Super Bowl you miss the Superbowl basically by one play and and and you want to get better and I think after the Superbowl in after free agency you you start thinking whether the team is not as good as they used to be I think if you look at the team now I mean you would have to think that you know they are as good or better then they were going to the Superbowl yeah I I mean you only hold off on saying that is because we haven't seen this combination of guys play together yet put Trent Williams is a like I just got a text from our buddy Kevin Francis a good pick great pick

Just staley has previously told the bank's board he had business connections with Epstein who was convicted of sex offenses and died in prison in New York last summer. His the BBC's Domenico Connell. It's hardly surprising. That Joe Staley had business links to Jeffrey Epstein. Mr Stele ran the private wealth division of J. P. Morgan one of America's biggest banks for several years he looked after the providence basements of wealthy Americans. Exactly the kind of business in which Mr Epstein was a big player this morning. Were now looking at exactly what he said. "Nine to have huge days and see if they can win the battle between them and the glint she and Joe Staley and of the Vikings had some wrinkles defensively for the saints last we had a dozen or has some other things up is right for this week against the forty Niners right I was thinking about going George kill are because I think that that his presence will help make it easier for Jimmy Garoppolo in his first playoff game and kills got that that vibe to him he's got that pro wrestler thing he's he just he's a great character and I feel like this is the kind of stage that he is destined to show up on in a big way so I guess he's not as important because I assume he's going to have a big game right I it's not is uncertain it is more on certain when it comes to dating Clowney the master of the F. up the play the guy who had that huge game against the forty Niners and came back and had a pretty good game against the eagles in the wild card round he did not reverse your head on Carson Wentz the the Green Bay Packers had better know where today being Clowney is anytime he's on the field because he won't just F. up the play he may have up your quarterback as well and the Packers will not survive if for the second straight week the Seahawks send the starting quarterback to the sidelines because this time it won't be Josh McCown it'll be Tim Boyle taking over for Aaron Rodgers which means at that point you just turn your TV to something else because we know what's going to happen if Tim Boyle plays quarterback for the pack pretty much you're right I mean it is a good I I you know I want to pick to Debbie and Connie the only reason I didn't do it is because you take care and Jones and I figured I change up the game a little bit but I'm I'm with you hi I'm totally with you and you're right I mean that game became inevitable even though like hell Philadelphia hung around I mean I know pointed I really think Josh McCown was gonna deliver there without playing all year in that moment against Seattle I mean I just didn't so that would be a huge bubble you're right man he Debbie on cloudy you just know when he's on the field to different defense when he's just somewhat close to a hundred percent he the stats just don't say it all would Clowney he ruins plays and his presence out there on the field in physicality in size and everything real he helps out that Seattle Seahawks defense all right quick break will return a lot of people were wrong about Lamar Jackson the real life George Costanza was not one of them what Larry David had to say recently about Lamar Jackson and the failure of teams to listen to him about taking in one PFT live continues right after this.

"Right now our chat with Chris he covers the San Francisco forty Niners to the Sacramento bee he was in Seattle on Sunday night for the thrilling finish he joins us courtesy of the I guess like Chris how's it going I'm doing well are you guys great great I I would have to imagine that it's been a while twenty four hours for you with the travel up in back to Seattle the game that took place play late on a Sunday night the stakes were clear the forty Niners knew they needed to win a wrap up the coveted number one seed what was the locker room seem like after the game it was it was kind of a a party like atmosphere it was I mean it was clear that that things had died down a little bit by the time the media got in there but you could definitely tell that guys really excited about the result the fact that they clinched really home field advantage and the by some of the veterans particular Joe Staley was was really happy just to finally get that winning feeling again back in Seattle place they obviously hadn't won since two thousand eleven so the live was released excitement that this team hasn't had a bison's week for all the way back in September something housetraining talk a little bit about today Emmanuel Sanders played seventeen regular season games because he didn't get a bye week after coming over be a trade from the Broncos in October so I I think the forty Niners are really going to enjoy this week often and you look at the last five games pretty much all of them have come down to the wire and they've all been really hard fought motional intense game so forty hours will gladly take his breather though they'll get a little bit healthier ahead of that divisional round game January eleventh and and they're feeling pretty good about things work where they stand as the top seed in the

"Joe Staley there's been around this league long time, and it's been a stalwart with the team those guys I think in pretty much police anybody who comes in. And I think somebody who's got kind of a high personality would be able to mess. Well, especially in that type of situation that has remained solid through some tough times. Peter before I let you go final question because this is this is the one I don't want to overload. We talk about the secondary in the needs. They're just the defensive unit in general for this team getting receiver. Garoppolo is there something we're missing. Is. There something that we don't see what this team needs to be addressed before the season starts on one of the things that's been kind of quiet and hasn't drawn up as much tension say pass rusher or wide receiver or maybe even like a cornerback or safety shortage of at linebacker. I'm surprised it hasn't been talked about quite as much. Fred Warner's kinda the only big name that you got there. Malcolm Smith had left two seasons. So I think forty Niners with light to find someone there CJ Moseley from the ravens didn't get tagged. Course, he's going to cost a lot of money forty might go some cheaper options. But yeah, I think that's going to be something that the Niners look to take care of this off season to get a little bit more consistency. And certainly a little bit more depth than a position that that went through a lot last year. Outstanding Peter thank you so much time serves a pleasure to talk to you. Hopefully, I'll catch up with you soon. Absolutely. Look looking forward to it. That is Peter Pan ac- from nine or noise at SF nine annoys on Twitter at Peter panacea on Twitter. You can spell that. P A A C Y talking about the forty Niners. Really? But route we think they should take for two thousand and nineteen obviously intriguing when the draft is just around the corner and all the rumors going on right after the combine my gods. We just had all these rumors flying in the NFL. And I love it. I love talking about last night. We're talking about Derek Carr. Could he be on the move from the raiders that's intriguing? I think I really do. I really do think that they're looking somewhere else when they're trying to package that team to get the Las Vegas collar Murray. Obviously one of the biggest stories in the entire league. This is what I love right now talking about what's coming up for two thousand nine hundred. All right. We'll continue the NFL conversation. Eight away. Kmby are is the number. We do have a lot of things to get into this evening. Checking end the warriors, and the Celtics going to be a part of the conversation. Kmby came drew already these sports.

"I think it's smart, you know, concern yourself with the safety of players and and try to do what we can. But also the day, you know, football is in the morning sport in the United States for reason, I think if you mess too much with a lot of the rules and the rule changes in how the games played, and then you're gonna kinda take away. What may that sports so successful. What do you think you've learned watching even just the first five weeks this year you've been out there. Now, I think since two thousand seven, what have you learned in this your twelve year about the sport itself and maybe the balance between offense and defense and whether it might be going too far? One way. Definitely think the. The rules are skewed for bigger output of offensive numbers. I think if you look at, you know, fantasy football and. How much interest that generates in the NFL and. You know, millions and millions of dollars and whatever. It seems like. Illegal contact, pass, interference, a legal touching on the quarterback. You know whatever tired to play defense now. So it creates more stats. More numbers, bigger, fantasy numbers, you know, happier consumers. And so it's definitely mean changing the game, and that's that sense. What's interesting is that I would think that most offensive guys would be throwing party for this. Yeah, we're excited about. I mean, it's, but it's also a football. Football is part of tons of games that have been hard-fought, you know, nine to six games and those are exciting and fun to play in. Exciting football does not need to be a forty five forty, two football game. He had an interesting conversation with Terry mcaulay. The former riff who now works for NBC is a rules analyst, and he said, he said, the NFL is a great game, but there's two things that he said that I thought were very interesting. One is that every rule that's made has to be made in a balance. You know, consider the effect on offense and on defense. And he said, what concerns me watching this game right now is that it's got a chance to become college football fifty, nine to forty two and and and really high scoring games. And I think you mentioned something very interesting about fantasy football and the effect of those numbers and how many people are playing it and and they want their quarterbacks to score thirty eight fantasy points and things like that. And it just boggles my mind that that kind of stuff might enter the. The realm of of the, the thought process by some of the people are actually making these rules. But I think you're probably right. And I wonder just from a player's standpoint, whether these sense, any frustration by players about this. More so on defensive side because you know, the rule changes kinda seem to have more of an effect on them. But I mean for me, I the games different than when I came in two thousand seven. You know, it's. Not only schematically and all that stuff and the game changing and evolving as it naturally does throughout the the generations. But you don't see those highlight hits anymore. And if they do, they're always with a flag and it's just a different football game. Joe Staley. Thanks so much for taking all the time. Yeah, no problem..

"But while filming season three Chapelle quit leaving behind a fifty million dollar paycheck. Speculation was rampant. Where did Dave go a mental institution? South Africa, wasn't at drug addiction these days Chapelle lives in a small town where he grew up. He sometimes attends the local town hall where everyone knows them not because he's famous because he's one of them. It's now been nearly fifteen years since his infamous departure. What really happened now vailable on apple podcasts and wherever you listen, it's time to ask yourself what really happened. And now just to let you know I had a brief conversation with Joe Staley last week when I was out in San Francisco, and I thought he said some really interesting things about where ofensive football stands right now in the NFL. So this isn't long, but I wanted you to hear from one of the most respected veterans in the NFL the twelve year left tackle for the San Francisco forty Niners, Joe Staley. Football. Now I see a game that is being Uber protective of the quarterbacks and is also calling two and a half times more illegal contact penalties in the first five weeks versus the first five weeks last year. So what do you think when you watch the what's being said and done about protecting the quarterback and about protecting wide receivers out in their roots? You know, obviously that a lot of people saying the game is getting way too soft and all that, but how do you look at it from veterans perspective? New game definitely changing. Definitely saying defensive, play different. You know, not seeing that aggressiveness that you saw maybe ten years ago, you know that bully kind of defense because anytime you have a big hit and even be, we experienced that in preseason we had a really great Brahim Mosterd are. One of our special teams guys made amazing field tackle, but it was a violent hit, but it was wrapped up right in the chest, took them down and it was a personal foul like unnecessary roughness guys aren't sure there's no consistency as far as like how it's being called. Some quarterbacks will get tattooed and there will be no flag, and then there's some quarterbacks are barely get touched or get tackled a little bit low or what have you, and there's a automatic fifteen yard penalty. There's no consistency guys don't really know how to play, which creates hesitation, which crates, intern, Primor injuries because people are, you know, if you play the game football, it's a high speed sport and a high collision, sport timid and unsure and not full speed. You're more susceptible to some kind of Pol or you know terror, you know some kind of injury. So I don't know. I don't like the. Direction NFL's headed with these rule changes..

"Welcome to the Peter King podcast where I take you into the world of football with me and you take a few detours occasionally, we are mostly football and this week get a very fun podcast. We're going to have Sam farmer the Los Angeles Times to discuss quite a few different things. Sean McVay of the Rams what the future of football might be in Los Angeles that tremendous new complex in Los Angeles. And also he's got an interesting story about Donald Trump. Then I'm going to give you a little snippet of a conversation I had with Joe Staley the San Francisco forty Niners veteran left tackle, and I want you to hear this because I think Joe Staley who's been in the trenches for twelve years in the NFL. L. has a great take on what's happening with -fensive football so far in this very explosive season. Then finally, I'll take you into the locker room with me Sunday night in Foxborough, Massachusetts, after the patriots forty, three to forty victory over the Kansas City Chiefs. The game of the year in the NFL. Actually, the game probably of several years was really terrific and Dante Hightower will join me. He was terrific in that game, and I wanted to give him his props because I thought he had a great deal to do with some of the great defensive stops. They had on Patrick Mahomes of the chiefs, but I, I want to take you into my evening on Sunday, late Sunday night in Foxborough. I found this very interesting a lot of times for people who don't get to go behind the scenes and don't. Get to go into the bowels of stadiums and see how players react after games and what teams are really like after games. I found this very, very interesting and rather telling. When I got downstairs from the press box after this game, I thought that I would go in and try to talk to a couple of chiefs fairly quickly before I was going to go into the New England locker room. And so I was waiting outside the chiefs locker room in the tunnel underneath Gillette stadium, and the chiefs come walking off the field. Maybe like a minute after the game, a ruckus celebration is going on in the in the stadium. There's fireworks going off. There's loud music being played. Crowd is still cheering a bit, and the teams are walking off the field. So it's kind of noisy, but all of a sudden you start to hear the click Clack of the cleats on the cement of the Kansas City Chiefs coming in now, just to explain what the scenes are like. A lot of times in close games in very, very hotly contested games. Players might come off the field and you might hear a few f. bombs, you might actually here players get upset at something or the yell. Something are are very occasionally. I've seen guys throw things in the tunnel, but as the forty five members of the Kansas City Chiefs, the forty five players came off as coach. Andy Reid came off as the coaches, the equipment staff, the trainers, all walked off the field, none of them displayed any sort of anger, any sort of disappointment. I would say that there was almost a business like air to them and not just a business like air. I would also say that it was, you know what we're okay, and it isn't that they. Accepted losing in any way because I talked to a couple of their guys about this. They don't accept losing and say, oh, that's fine. We played a good game. And you know, there are medals for trying. So you know all this self esteem America, it's okay lose. If you try your hardest, the chiefs really didn't feel that way. But I think the chiefs felt this way. Okay. Our quarterback didn't play very well. In the first half, we only scored nine points, three field goals. We came into halftime down fifteen and we came back and we still put up forty points. We went toe-to-toe with the grade Brady and Bella check, and we scored forty points and we're okay, we're going to be fine if we meet them again..

"Are the odds of a team losing their first nine games? And then winning their last five you can't count that high. It's not like Jimmy was the savior, right? It's the whole team Parague morale Teigen and every single player played better had more confidence. And and saw the culmination of their hard work and patience that they had towards the vision sorta come to fruition Jimmy was the catalyst like the first spark plug, but it really ignited the whole team. Here's Joe Staley was huge for our team. I surface the way we did, you know, Jimmy coming in really made a huge difference for us and Cayo us check. I think you really gotta give Jimmy a lot of credit. I mean, he put in serious time after practice with the coaches by himself. I mean, he was here all night just trying to learn this playbook and jed York the owner. I mean, it was very clear that Jimmy was a guy that took everybody's attention on. On the field like the guys gravitated towards him. And he's natural leader as a reward. Jimmy Garoppolo having sat on the bench for four seasons in New England. And then started a grand total of five games for San Francisco. Garoppolo signed a five-year contract worth one hundred and thirty seven point five million dollars. It was at that point the richest contract in NFL history for the most part. I just go out. And do my thing. You know, all the outside noise is it's just noise you get caught up in all that stuff. You're gonna have a tough time NFL is hard enough as it is from everything that we've heard from everyone on the exact side and on the players side years some combination of lake Waie tiddle and superman and Jesus Christ like people just gather around you and love you. All right. Yeah. I think you know, I've never really tried to fake it or. I don't know someone that I'm not because you guys I mean, especially in NFL locker and they see they're not dumb. "Does it? Have you noticed any effect from that as well? I have. I actually, I enjoy that in. I mean, it's nothing extensive. It's, you know, maybe six to ten minutes here. I try to do it at twice a try twice twice a day or on. Usually just once before. I usually do it before I go to bed. At the very least I try to do it on the night before games, but I, I do for you, tell us something about being a professional athlete or more specifically an NFL fullback that you think most people just have no concept of wouldn't understand or maybe appreciate Mamie. I think a lot of people, I don't think they understand the amount of time that's put in outside Sunday. You know, I think people a lot of people, they know we practice, they know we work out, but I don't think they realized that like. During our face to have our offseason program. We're only blocked for four hours. I'm here for eight, nine hours. You know, like we are only required to be here for that four, but I don't think people realize just how much time is really spent in this facility. Have you been on teams where most guys would only be there for the minimum I wanted to Baltimore is pretty good. Like most of the guys were putting in that extra time, but I would still say like it doesn't really compare it to to hear. I think they do such a good job of the. There's so much vailable for us here. Like what I mean, as far as our nutrition is like off the chain, it's it's incredible. There's so much information available there. I mean, the food is great. So, I mean, I do a lot with our dietician where I mean right now we're doing like a, it's another kind of brain study redoing DHA supplement. Tests, but you know, like I have that available. I have the brain tests available. Our training room is there are medical staff is so great about I can go in there and ask for anything I can get cupping and get grass in. I can get acupuncture, I can just get a massage flush if I need it. You know, haka Hutto coal tub Saana steam room. We got the weight room is all always available. We got cryotherapy there, which cryotherapy the chamber that they pump. I think it's nitrogen gas and they're super cold and you're in there for like three minutes, drought, your body tempers. Super super-low. So tell us them. Let me just ask you about a series of gimme like what you're doing Monday at ten AM typically during game during the season during the season. So that's Mondays are like body maintenance, very, very. As your off day here, then. Yeah. Okay. So Monday at ten AM probably getting a massage k. Friday at noon, Friday at noon. We're on the field k Sunday. Let's say eight AM with a one PM game. Probably starting to get up and get ready for breakfast k. the t. motel. Then what about Sunday night? Let's say Sunday night after the game. Yeah, game, you know, it depends if somebody's in town for the game, usually there is somebody so we're probably grabbing dinner. Gotcha. Somewhere with a friend or family, it's visiting. Right. Thanks. It's great to talk to you. "And here now is our conversation with the brand new forty Niner and giant of a man Staley was talking about often tackle Mike mcglinchey. You are going to be starting here playing right, tackle understand user migrating eventually left tackle, probably serve planets with whatever they say I need to do. So here's the thing we always hear, like, obviously, you're, you know, first round draft pick so there, nobody's trying to bury you, but we do hear the stories about how veterans who are trying to, you know, theoretically, make welcome young guys at their positions sometimes aren't as welcoming. As I may be. I know that you've been getting a, you know, good advice and welcome from Joe Staley. I'm just curious like what your expectations were and so on that front, I really didn't know what to expect because I've heard a lot of different things. I came from an old line room that was completely the opposite of that. We at Notre Dame. We always helped out everyone that came into the room, no matter what age you were. You were always, you know, welcome to the part of the family. And fortunately here in San Francisco. Oh, I've had the same experience thus far. I mean, it's a an awesome group that we have, and there hasn't been anybody that's making you feel like crap or anybody that's making you pay your dues too hard other than you know a couple of jokes here and there, but no, it's it's been an awesome experience with all the vets all the guys that we have in our room, and everybody's just trying to do the same job and that's the rookie hazing anymore. Nothing that I was not serious. I mean, we're only we're only in day to practice so wave. I, I'm assuming I'm waiting 'til training camp iced have my guard up a little bit. So yeah, even in two weeks, I still have a little bit of a guard up to see what's coming. You're tall about six to eight and you weighing what? Three, ten, something like that. And what's? What's your optimal weight? Is that many right there? What's your, what's your shirt? Is it? Yeah, it's a West Point. Family friend of ours plays basketball there. I see. They had a, I think they miss bought a two XL. I was guided, they knew him for it. You come from a big family, four brothers, one sister, something like that. Yeah, four brothers wants this from the oldest to six. Okay. Are they athletes? Yeah, nothing. I don't know. We'll see. They're all younger than me. So I don't know if anybody's gonna make the NFL, but yet they're, they're definitely play their sports. So how many games have you missed due to injury in the last ever years? Never. I've never missed the game. Yeah, there's always a recent unless there was like a family obligation when I was like I was second grade, but I can't remember that so, but since you play football, presumably been a little bit injured. You know, what are some of the things you've played through a sprained left ankle stomach flu broken hand. You know, couple Knicks every other wear. So nothing. Nothing major was broken hand. Something that most Saint people would have not played with or depends on how much you love football guess. Yeah. Can you explain, especially for people who don't care know anything about football at all? Like what's your job? My job is to open up running lanes and keep people off Jimmy Garoppolo. So that's all I can. I'm just I just kind of get in the way is really what my job is. So the paradox era, I guess the maybe it's not a paradox. It's the hard thing to come across someone your size who's also fast and coordinated and a good athlete. So there aren't that many of you to start with, but then there are a lot of people your size and speed who don't make it. So what is it you think that is the difference between people who are physically capable and who are gifted with the size, but who don't have the capability to play at your level in college now in the NFL? Oh, I think it's, it's all mental. I think. I think it's about how much you want it, how much you love it and how much you're willing to sacrifice for it. I was never the best athletes on my team. I was I've, I'm still not the best athletes on my on my team here, but I've always wanted it more..

"To win so the question is he throws out joe staley joe thomas um you know joe staehli fits a little bit better 'cause i at believe he's a right tackle in and joe thomas is left tackle and you'd have to mubarak lanoue but let's just say tackle is pain in he said have our first round pick and paxson lynch to the niners for joe saily foul my question to you is is there any outside help that you feel like would guarantee this team a much further a much longer season we can't guarantee a super bowl right but right now right now you feel that the broncos are either just going to miss out or they're going to be a wildcard i still feel like the chiefs end up winning the division by it i feel less good about that right now so is there a way that the bronco is there somebody out there that they can get that would turn them from a wildcard team from a either a nonplayoff team to a playoff team from a play out adel wildcard to division winner to uh first round exit to playing for the afc championship do you think that there's that kind of help out there in his at at tackle they plug up right tackle and then pouf no it's not that simple and it's even if it is the right tackle position that literally the only peace mmhmm it's not can it again isn't going to be simple it's not your neck is billy hey we want you right tackle you've you x and y right now they're going to be like okay we want also y a b and c bright no cause traitor art in the nfl look it your situation and say what can i poll from them to give them what they need any any know what i love about paul cleese piece today is that to get that outside help the broncos are going to have to reach out to john lynch and kyle shanahan in it yeah but mostly john lennon how's that guy how's that going to work out how a cow stands i sure why not john leslie moon let's see right remember when.
