Bath fitters price guarantee is a slam dunk bath fitter. It just fits. Welcome to four down territory. Stinkin might take a look at the four biggest stories in Denver sports. Here's Larry than Evans kicking it off with the first time. Avalanche continue to roll 14 two and two in their last 18 after a three zero shutout of the Vegas knights and a shutout the third of the season for Alexander georgiev. Yeah, big game and once again, we started really well. Scored a big goal right away and played really smart. I think in the first period was one of the tougher ones for me, but I think we played really, really great. Second and third, then in London, we got too much going on and heard a lot of penalties, so good job overall. It's a career high third shout out, as I mentioned, and he's got a career best 26 wins now this season, which puts him third for most wins by a goaltender, Darcy Kemper who? Yeah. It's, it's really remarkable how the abs and Joe sack Chris mcfarlane have changed on the fly, it's like trying to win a Super Bowl and literally being a Super Bowl contender. Three straight years with three different quarterbacks. That is not the exact same level, but you get what I'm saying. Come play off time, it's the most, it should be the most important position and yet the abs want to Stanley Cup last year with Darcy Kemper being among the most statistically worse of all the playoff goalies, they still win the cup, and now to these eyes out of the three guys that they've had over the last three years, Georgia looks to be the best. He does, gorky park is looking great. And you're right. I mean, to be able to switch, it's not an apples to apples comparison. In the quarterback to the goaltender, but the importance of those two. There's no question the importance of your goaltending and there's no question about the importance of your quarterback. So I don't know percentage wise, will you put the quarterback ad versus the goaltender, but they're pretty high percentages in both in both sports, right? I mean, what would you say? You had a percentage wise, the value of the versus the value of the quarterback? The quarterback, wow. I would put the quarterback higher. If you're trying to win a Super Bowl, the importance, I would put the quarterback at least probably at. 60, 70%. Let's say 70%. Whereas I put the goalie probably at about 50. Okay. Yeah, I think that's, I think that's right. Now, if you're D Mac, the quarterback, as long as he's taking the top 5, with a top 5 pick, is it 100%? Carson Wentz. Get him down. Broncos at the combine, my cliffs will be joining us here in about ten minutes. We'll get to deep into what's going on there. We're having some fun this morning. We're asking you because this is the combine where these players get poked and prodded and all kinds of interviews. So if you could ask a potential Bronco draft pick, one question, what would it be? And we're getting some really good ones. I like this one. How do you feel about Wednesday practices? Yes. Are Wednesday practices tall? On a serious note, is there anything that you would write off the bat like your, let's say you're the general manager. And I am, you know, said player coming out. Is there anything serious you would, you know, I know this is going to sound overly simplistic, but when I see some of the guys that do get drafted high and then I hear them talk and it leads me to wonder, did you talk to him? I think that the biggest thing I'm looking for is, does this guy clearly love football? Right. That'd be the first thing I'm looking for. This is kind of love football. And then I'll start looking at the other stuff. But does he love football? Because he doesn't love to find that out. I think you can get it. I think you can get a feel. I think you can get a sense. I know that these guys at the combine, they've been spending the last couple of months getting coached up on how to answer questions. I just think you can well let me ask you, don't you think you could tell? I think there's some guys that are pretty well coached up. The love football thing is something you have to find on film, I think. Yeah, don't you think with that combined with talking to the guy? You get a sense? Yeah, I think I do think you gotta do a better job of having kind of horse sense about what a guy is. I know a question I'd ask you. Me? Yeah, if you were the player and I was a GM. How do you fit that head into a helmet? Yeah. Besides, I don't look to you where. You'd be like doing it, especially what are those? One of the things we like to do here in this test is to check your temperature. Oh jeez. Correctly. Oh God. We're sick less rank, curacy, Mike. I should have seen that one. Yes. Should have seen that one, John. Third down. The best in the west nuggets continue to surge, they're in Houston tonight to take on the rockets and this is as sure a thing as you're going to find on the NBA docket. Right now, Houston is awful. And it's amazing. Guys, guys are getting career nights against Houston. They list over the last like 30 games at Houston's play. With guys that have gone off for career high season eyes is there's just a bunch of 40, 50 burgers, culminating with a 70, one point dame Lillard explosion the other night. You want to get right? So I'm going to ask you to call your shot. I'm going to call you, I want you to call your shot tonight. Who is the nuggets leading score tonight? Jamal Murray. I want to go Michael Porter junior. I think Porter right now is feeling it. I think he's in a good place. A lot of confidence. I think this is one of those games tailor made for him to go off and go for like 35. That was my initial thought, but then I started thinking, wouldn't it be great to get Jamal Murray just really going? Just really feeling good about his shot. I don't know. I'd like to see it. There's a good chance somebody goes for 40 tonight. Figure that is. I don't think it'll be jokic stuff. No, no, this is gonna be one of those games where jokic goes like 6 for 9. They'll take like 9 shots. Yeah, he'll be like 21, 16, and 16. Yeah, yeah, a ton of assists. He'll have more, he'll have more assist than rebounds tonight. Yes, he may have more system points. You could call there. One, two, three, fourth down. I like that did you like that? You're sexy. I did like that. That's hot. More rebounds at points. Yeah. It's hot. That is hot. That is hot. All right, play it. I need it set the tone. I am the candy beet. They can't be beat. Look at Chris Bryant yesterday.

"It's a good assumption. So we'll give him a pass that sees no doubt gonna walk in here with hot, fresh egg of muffins for us. Which explains why he's now a minute and 45 seconds late. Look who's here. Look who's here. Man. Man, I would love to see you try to pull this off with your NFL coaches. NFL coaches. Hey man. You know where the funny thing about it? I thought respect if you would fear. About 5 minutes ago, you would have saw me on my hands and knees. Looking underneath my underneath my raptor for my phone. You dropped your phone? I dropped my phone coming out of the car. Well, the phone's gonna have to wait. Didn't want to pull the car forward because it pitch black at 6 o'clock in the morning. It is. And I was just like, what do I do in this situation right here? I have to go underneath this thing to find it. I can not pull the car forward. Am I drive over it? Because I can't see right now. Man, are these, you don't have to deal with me after today? Are these? Forget forgave you and John. I want her to you guys a favor. How would John Fox have handled that excuse, huh? Hey, John. You better tell them what we call our show on Friday. It's a guilty pleasure Friday. This is easy. This ain't no heavy lifting, right? I'm fine with that. You think what I thought? You think we lived heavy on Fridays? You probably haven't listened to our show over the years. I don't know why I might be in church for being a minute and a half late. Hey man, hey. I could have took the easy route and said, hey, I'm going to go to the east coast and do some TV. I'm too good. Big time the heck out of you. How did you get that? No, I'm here. I'm in the trenches with you. We talk about it. All right. All right. All right, you're here. You're here. That's good. We're good. We're good. Stayed in as he has been all week long, and I do appreciate it, all the busting chops aside. Been seen in for the first half of the show all week long. Mark comes along, yeah, mark's been doing national TV work back east for FS1 in New York City. As part of their morning show, he's got the relationship with Fox. So he comes along at 7 30, when he's done over there. So it's half and half, it's a half of the half was stink and all with me and all with an is it just me Friday where, yeah, we get loose on Fridays. We encourage everybody to get loose. We want to have fun. It's been a long week. We want plenty of humor. We want plenty of snark to be able to relax, right? All that stuff. So is it just me Friday? Oh, for you who maybe not familiar with it, it's very simple concept. You get a chance to get everything off your chest if you want out there as fans, hit us up on the ripple saw dot com text line, 303-713-1043. It can be about anything and everything. There's so much going on right now, you've got, of course, you got the Broncos coaching search, you got Sean Payton, Russell Wilson, accusations that they're too buddy buddy. You've got the coaching search. You've got George Payton's role. You've got the avalanche congratulations to mikko rantanen and Nathan McKinnon, there were only 12 more spots that they were going to fill out on the all star team in the abs got two of them, so macar, McKinnon, and ranting in all NHL all stars, it would have been a crime if they all three weren't involved. And mikko gets to walk by Joe sackett every day for the rest of his career for the rest of the time that he's here and let Joe that, hey, I got to 30 one game before you got to go on game before you did it. You know, I hold that record now. So what a bear travesty, Joe sackett, when we think about hockey and this town, we think about Joe sack could be a one of the biggest names as forsberg, then Patrick Warren, then all the kind of guys that are around the program right now because of how dominant and how much of a powerhouse. But the NHL I never really liked those kind of rules where it was like the one and it just never seemed really fair to teams that really assembled and drafted and developed the right way, especially played the right way. And it clearly the apps played the right way. So congrats to mikko. Congrats to Nate. I mean, I don't even know what to say. You're a unicorn, you're the best thing in the world. It doesn't get any better than you, especially at your age. I don't even know where you're going to take your career. It's going to be unbelievable, but congrats to all those guys and congrats to our lunch. You mentioned that, by the way, Miko ranton in 43 games goes the fastest avalanche player to hit 30 goals in a season, beating the previous Colorado benchmark of 44 set by Joe sakic in 1995, 96 the franchise's first season here in Denver and that team went on to win the Stanley Cup and maybe this team can win it again. So congratulations to those guys. And yeah, we've got mikko ranton and said he'd have avalanche records. We get the abs as the Stanley Cup champs, everyone, three in a row. And you got the nuggets with Nikola Jokić. Again, I defy. I can't wait. Keep doing what you're doing, Nicola, because I want to test this theory that voters might want to vote for jokic's MVP for the third straight year, but will not because he hasn't won a championship and because the only three players to win three straight before Russell Chamberlain and bird all won championships, they just won't vote for jokes 'cause he doesn't have one. Let's test that theory. I want to put all the pressure on these guys and these voters so that they have to come and go look. I don't know what to tell you, but I don't care if he hasn't won a title. Dude has been unbelievable. Dude needs to win a third straight MVP. So you got that to weigh in on. You've got Deion Sanders doing it again. Not a complete surprise. Don't do this. What? Do I? I thought we were going to keep it light. I thought we were going to keep a fund. I know I know what's going on here. All right, I got you. I got you. I got you. You're a Miami hurricane. Deion Sanders anol. 7 O. No, no. Oh, not because the flip of the committed for Miami. Oh, that. Okay. All right. All right, all right, yes, you're right. Mcclain did not sign up with the university of Miami, where he had been committed to for a long time, and instead he flipped. And he flipped a Colorado. Yeah, we're supposed to keep a light. I thought we were done throwing, haymakers at each other. I'm just passing along the news. I'm just reporting the news. Don't shoot the messenger. We don't want to have to talk about CU every day. Every hour. Every segment, we don't have to do it. Why not? People are excited about it all the time. We don't have to do whatever. See you selling more tickets than like USC, Utah, Washington, and Oregon combined this off season. Yeah, no, I'm the real congrats to this kid. I think this kid's going to be a heck of a football player. I would have loved to have been in the meetings to hear how Deion got the kid to flip.

"Year Jared bednar Joe sack at Chris mcfarlane. They need to kind of take the bigger picture. In view, what do you think? I do. I think you have to protect the players from themselves as an organization as a coaching staff. So you're going to have to figure that out. But I'm with you on that, Mike. I think it's incumbent upon bednar and a part of the organization to say, how are we going to limit some of the ice time? How are we going to ease into this thing? And you know, it's almost one of those situations where, hey guys, like we want to win, but there is a cost. And so we're just going to, we're going to play this thing out. We're not going to try to take away wins, but a lot of guys are going to get a lot of playing time early in this season. So our veteran guys that we know we have to lean on later on in the year. As we're making that playoff push, those guys are as fresh as we can keep them. It's almost like you've got to, you know, you can learn something from the Broncos, right? Take a training camp approach. Yes. Broncos training camp approach. And you just, and all you say is, hey, just wait till April. You know what? If Jared bednar came out and said, I am doing this early in the season to make sure my guys are fresh for June. You know what we'd all do? We'd say, yes. Good idea. Right. Smart move. You guys have earned. You've earned the right to do that. Something that another franchise and another coach has not earned the right to. All right, third and long, we got a punt. The king is here. Thank you, marquette. Coming up, San Francisco does this may be the best in the league. So how do the Broncos stop it? Stink will tell you next. It's a Bud Light football Friday. Bud Light, official beer sponsor of the Denver Broncos. Here schlereth and Evans. What's trending coming up at 7 30, if the Broncos are going to get a win on Sunday, they're going to have to be able in the words of Nathaniel Hackett to deal with San Francisco's impressive running game. Yeah, first and foremost, they're unbelievably well coached. And they know how to run off the ball and be able to be aggressive down the field at the same time. With their run blocking. So they're trying to get across the line of scrimmage, both in their inside zone and their outside zone. And then you add in all the different groupings, formations, shifts, motions, debo's in the backfield, all kinds of different people are in the backfield. So I think they caused that consternation like we like to say, along with it. They execute at a high level and are very well coached. Mark, I can hear your heavy breathing. You can't wait. You're salivating at the idea of talking about the San Francisco running game, but first let's hear Kyle Shanahan talk about it. You know, my dad had a real good system in a long time ago. And it's changed a lot, but just growing up in Washington and not even knowing that system, it kind of just, that's how I saw football. And I didn't really start really understanding it until I got into the NFL. And that was me trying to understand it through other people's eyes, being a Tampa Bay with Gruden and things like that. And then to be able to work with him and Washington, it's kind of really evolved there. We both kind of solid from a similar foundation, but we also saw a lot of things different. And that's where I, even though Washington was on the most fun time, it was such a great important time for me just to view as my dad for those four years. And to kind of really see where I wanted to go with the offense that I wanted to run the rest of my career. And I'm very fortunate to have had him growing up and to still have them that way. Down marked down. I know you're eager. I know you're eager, hold on one more from Kyle. Yeah, I mean, I think it's the commitment to it. And it's just kind of what you get what you emphasize. And we emphasize that a lot. Regardless of your personnel, regardless of anything, there's something that I believed in for a long time. I mean, I think I got that growing up just watching as a fan and since I've been in the league, I try to get a bunch of different ways. And I feel the only times that you're truly successful in wind games is consistently and get going places is when you can depend on that run game and make people scared of the run game and if you do, everything else becomes a lot easier. All right, go ahead. Yeah, I mean, are you smoking a cigarette right now? Yeah. I just, I took my shirt off during that. That was, I feel really good. And a 100%. I mean, it's exactly what I believe in. And I will tell you this, the other thing is, talk about running the ball and your belief in running the ball and running the ball in situations where most coaches don't. And I think one of the things that sets San Francisco apart is they've got a great second down in long run package. Where usually with most coaches, man, we're just throwing the ball there. They've got a great and they executed exceptionally well. They've got a third down and 5 minus run package. So you get a third down and four and everything's still on the table for you as a defense. They will run the ball on third and four. And they'll convert more often than not. And so they, they throw a bit of a monkey wrench in kind of called the analytics, if you will. Call it the, they break the percentages, Mike. And that's another thing that makes them a really kind of a really hard to predict offense because they do those things in downs where most people just say, hey, screw it, we can't run here. They will. Well, then if Nathaniel Hackett is a derivative of all this, if he comes from that tree, maybe it's 6° of it, but if he comes from it, then isn't that something a mentality that he should be a 100% trying to implement here. It doesn't that even make it more curious. Some of the decisions that he's made down by the goal line. Yeah, I mean, it does, but again, I think you got to balance it out with he's had Rogers, right? And of course, Rogers is never the wrong answer. When it comes to, hey, what do we want to do here in the red zone? We've got Rogers. Hey, what do we want to do here in this critical second down? And 7, 8. We got Rogers. He was a different coach when he had Blake bortles. Me and William, when he was coordinating an offense in Jacksonville, I saw them in Jacksonville in the offense. He was coordinating, run the ball against the Pittsburgh Steelers. 18 straight times. 18 straight times. And you've got to understand kind of what you have. So there is a balance and there is a figuring out what's best for us, what we do well, what we execute well. And also, hey, when do I lean on Russell and when do I take some of that off Brussels plate? And I think there's a process there. And I know that none of us are patient, but what I'm saying is I think you're going to have to have some patience there. Okay. All right. We'll see what they have in some sense at all. It makes sense, but you don't like it. Well, I'd like to, I like to microwave the whole thing because if everything that Nathaniel Hackett is going to do, let's face it. It all traces back to Mike Shanahan. It all traces back to Mike Shanahan. And Kyle Shanahan is you just heard Kyle talking about the influence that his dad has had on all this. So I'd like to see, I'd like to see it filter down pretty quickly to Nathaniel Hackett. If this is something that he's been immersed in for years, then let's go. Let's see it here. And let's see it here starting on Sunday. I'll tell you what, if they do, if both teams are committed to honoring Mike Shannon, will be upstairs watching the game in person. This game could be over in about two hours. If both teams run the book. Exactly. Be able to get to bed early. Okay, coming up. What is trending? Josh Allen does it all. Now he's a movie critic? Details next. But first, how the rockies fare yesterday. I know you're hanging on the edge of your seat, wondering how they did as they closed out the season. Here's Billy to fill us in. It's a Bud Light football Friday. Bud Light,

"Dangerous with Jimmy Garoppolo than they are Trey Lance? Is this the backup? Yeah. This is the guy they tried to get rid of. Because they're passing game is that it opens up whatever they lose in the quarterback runs, the design runs in. You know, ultimately, Mike, and I had this conversation with Kyle too. Like how many design runs can you? Design runs like the number because we're running all this RPO stuff. So there are times when he'll pull it and run it, there are times when he won't pull it and run it. You know, so like, are they designed? You know, the quarterback, the quarterback power, which was Kyle said he's the best play he runs. That one's a call and run at play. Essentially, to play, he hurt his ankle on. But the bottom line is whatever you lose in that portion of your running game and they still have the most advanced running game in football. You make up tenfold with his ability to understand and operate every ounce of their passing game, which Trey Lance didn't have at his disposal. So they're just a better team with Jimmy Garoppolo. Next and four down. Second down. Oh, I think it was important. Both sides need. We wanted him to be. He's an avalanche. He's been an avalanche for a lot of last 9 years. Ten years. And he's going to remain an avalanche throughout his career. And I think that that's important is shows a lot of loyalty. I know Nathan wanted to get this done. We wanted to get it done and he's a franchise player. And we're really excited to remain here in Colorado for the rest of his career. Joe sakic and he asked for an office just continue to hit home runs. Yeah. And big one yesterday. This was judge Ian. As they get Nathan McKinnon done in 8 year $100.8 million extension that will make him the highest paid player in the NHL for now. And it ties him to the avalanche for the next 9 years. 9 years. So we had this conversation when we were talking about the wisdom of signing, resigning nazem kadri, that, hey, at the end of the deal, do you run the risk of the deal won't age well? Do you have any concerns about that when it comes to McKinnon? No, I mean, 9 years from now, you know, borrowing major major injury. Well, he'd still be a productive player the way he is. Will he slow down a little bit? Yeah. But will he still like will he still have all the skill set absolutely? So let's say you, let's say, is what is he 26 or something like 7? 27? So let's say for the next 5 years, Mike, you get him in his prime. What he's doing right now for the next 5 years. And then it starts to wane a little bit. It's worth every penny. See, a great comparison for me is Alex Ovechkin. This is somebody who has aged gracefully as maybe he's lost a little bit of his wheels a little bit of his speed doesn't matter. He has such a heavy shot. He has so much hockey, high hockey IQ, and whatever Nathan McKinnon may lose in some of his skating speed. I can still see him well into his 30s, lined up on that left side, taking one timers with that heavy shot of his, and still blowing it past goalies. Joe sacking, Joe sakic had his shot with him right up until the end. I have no doubt McKinnon will have his and still be very productive well into his 30s. I agree. Next in four down. Third down. There it is, ladies and gentlemen, the great Mark schlereth. Hey, let's give it up for our man stink. As he is one of 129 modern modern era nominees for the pro football Hall of Fame class of 2023. You've been on this list before. You've been offered for the last couple of years, I think. Yeah, I think so. And now you're back on it. You made the cut. Clearly you paid somebody off. Right. But yeah, congratulations, because you know, how important it is to me, right? Oh, come on. There's got to be part of you that's, come on, just be honest. Just between you and I, you're kind of pretty proud of this, aren't you? No. Come on. This is so exciting. What? You made the first cut for the pro football Hall of Fame. Yeah, right? And you're just gonna give me the whoopty doo bay basil response. That's it? Pretty much, yeah. Come on. Come on. You know what? To get into the Hall of Fame. I have the same chance of getting in the Hall of Fame. There are the only way that I get in is side by side with you as we pay our ticket stubs to. Exactly. But I'm never gonna make a list like this. It's 90 9 point 9% of the people out there will never make a list like this. 99% of the players that play in the NFL won't make that money. Right, right, okay. Good dream was to play quarterback in the NFL. Turns out I was fat and not athletic enough. Yeah. Hey, listen. You know what? I had just my dream. That's right. I don't know. Got that one from the archives. I don't know where you got that. Nicely done there for you. By the way, you along with ten other former Broncos and when I say former Broncos, that's stretching it a little bit when you're putting Dre bly Simeon rice Seth Joyner on Wes Welker on this list, along with Neil Smith, DeMarcus ware, Al Wilson, Mark, rod Smith, Tom nail and Jason Neal. All making the list of a 129 modern era nominees for the class of 2023 pro football Hall of Fame congratulations that you stink. Next on the pour down. One, two, three, four down. 6 innings. Three runs. In Denver, a lot of times W tonight it didn't happen. That's the best. That was the best piece of sound from bud black all year long. The night it didn't happen. I didn't have. Like many other nights. Like many other nights. Stamp had my gentleman, your 2022 Colorado Rockies. And ash, can you? They lost to the Giants last night, 6 three. There is no Chris Bryant. There is light at the end of the tunnel though, right? All right, you just looking for signs, whatever signs I can fill whatever the seat. So they're just looking for the end of this. Oh, they are, yeah. They're just like, when is it going? It's September 21st, one, two, three can come. And by the way, September 21. Yes, we need to acknowledge that. We will pay tribute to the chiefs kingdom. Coming up, Aldo for four down territory. Up next, it is a tell me why I'm wrong Wednesday

"So you got fired a month to do his job and was rehired less than 24 hours later because his entire team, including the sun, some of the owners are protested. Yeah, protested. And said they were not going to play unless he was back. So a guy that has had that track record for getting players to buy in, same thing with the islanders. Again, when you're in a team coach by Barry tried, so you're known for having the identity of stingy grinded out team, but as a guy who helped run their defense, he played a very practical and hands on role in terms of getting that defense to be a team that was tough to play against. I think they were in the top ten in fewest goals against per game in all four years with the islanders. So it seems like a guy that wherever he's gone, he's done a very good job at getting guys to communicate, get his message across, get guys to buy in. And so for this team, if his main objective is getting more offensive capabilities out of this decor, seems like a pretty good guy to take on that task, especially if it's something that allows guys like mcavoy or grizzly would have you hit another gear in terms of their offensive production. I don't think you're going to see Brendan Carlo all of a sudden be a 15 goal score or what have you. But if he's able to get if he's able to get more production or just more adopting more mindset of finding those shooting lanes of not being afraid to take a shot and maybe in the past, you'd be chastised for being a low danger shot. If it's all about finding those lanes and capitalizing on them, seems like a pretty good guy for kind of the objectives or the bruins are mapping out for this roster. And that was something that bruins wanted the past couple of years. I remember even Cassidy mentioning this after the hurricane series in 2020 and the bubble saying, we need to get more shots through from the point. And over the past couple of years, it never really took place. And again, hampus lindholm helps with that. It does not help the Charlie mcavoy is going to be out for the first month and a half, two months of the season. Of course, I could be out for a month. So that definitely hurts, but I do think when the lineup is healthy, I think for the direction they want to go in, Gruden sounds like the guy. We will see we will completely say, again, it's an assistant coach, so it's not like he's going to revitalize the whole system. But good to get a new voice on the bench. You know, they got one last year in Chris Kelly. They've had Joe Sacco now forever. I know Joe sack was nothing to do with the defense, but like Joseph has been there since I think like what 2014. Quite a while. Quite a while. And you have goalie bob, obviously. So quite the assistant coaching crew Gruden and interesting hire should be interested to see what he does. But Connor, what can people look forward to from you over at Boston sports journal? Yeah, Evan, we're going to continue to break down the off season as we await some actual tangible news surrounding increased version on David creche. But until that happens, we'll still have you covered every step of the way. I think next week we're going to do a little bit of a dive into prospects and we usually do a prospect ranking every year during the off season, so I think we're going to commit to that undertaking next week quite the undertaking.

"Saying he's in my notebook, I'm in his notebook, and you don't even have a notebook. Look at that. Yeah, look at the notes. See? He actually does take good notes. I will get you, you do take good note. Thank you, Zach. Thank you. They're very copious. Yes, with a K. Mark, my question is, you're a part of two super back to back. But I'm talking about here, excuse me. Back to back ones. How did the teams change? I know for me just real quick, you know, you look at having Peyton Manning. You gotta have your foundation. You look at having that quarterback in that foundation. Everything is built off of that. You look at the ads. You got McKinnon rant and Lana Scott. You got your guys. I'm sure the car got the car. I left the guy out. But then after that, you just got to build the team out. Who did y'all? Do you have any stories about that? I mean, how'd you feel about it? 'cause you lose guys, right? Right, you do. They made there's a decision at the first Super Bowl. We had two guards that were up myself and Brian Habib. Free agent wise and Brian left Brian left went to Seattle for more money. I couldn't pass a physical anywhere else, so I kind of was like, that was the guy, hey, we don't have to pay him a whole lot, and he's not going to pass the physical anywhere else. So he's here. But we knew we also knew we had some young players that we had groomed and we had coached and we have drafted that needed to play. And so we made some of those some of those changes we lost a couple of guys up front. But you mentioned the core Elway was still here. Shannon Sharpe was still here Terrell Davis wasn't going anywhere. Ross rod and Eddie Mack were still here. And so the decisions we made even though we were really good up front and you know and dominated a team in Green Bay that was a huge favorite over us in the Super Bowl. We knew we had some young players that we had groomed that were ready to play. They just needed the opportunity so they made those decisions as an organization. And then for the right ones. Right, but then you keep your fingers crossed that they are the right ones, right? And you hope that that's what you have to do. You have to trust who you drafted at some of the young guys and kind of keep your fingers crossed that they end up going out there and doing what you've seen in practice. And ultimately have trust in Joe sakic to pick those guys. That's right. And he's pushed all the right buttons. You look at the trade deadline, you look at some of the pass trades. Shoot, we started talking about this because Valentin signs a $49 million deal. Joe sack signed him for one year 850 grand. Yeah. So that was the genesis of this relationship and can't wait to continue to watch it for the next half a decade and maybe more. Another fun show, guys. Mark, thanks for letting us sit in. John simmer behind the glass. Do both of you guys feel fed? After three hours, like the wide receiver room both of you guys feel like you got your stuff off. I don't know about I don't know about that, but I just shut down and I'm just gonna try to make a notebook tomorrow. That's my goal. That's my goal. Yeah, I know one thing. Stokes a star because the star shines every single night and then I know we're in the morning here, but stokes star he was shining bright today. That's how you know. Look at you. Why don't you get that? I know. I know told me that, yeah. Now you're already on step three. Yeah, you're gonna take the credit next time. Yep. We will leave it there for today. Everyone have a great rest of your Tuesday. We step aside for Matt Smith and Nate Jackson coming up next. Hey, it's Mike Evans. "Really proud of the proud of this award. And thank our coaching staff led by Jared bednar, all of our players. I got to tell you it was a pleasure watching him. I had the privilege of watching those guys day in day out this year. Show that commitment to one another and in persevere and find a way to win the Stanley Cup. So we wouldn't be here without those guys. Congratulations to Joe sack. Nate Jackson saying interesting who's at an offensive lineman summit. This weekend, they sitting in Joe sakic Wednesday NHL GM executive of the year award and so deserving and again, it's a regular season award that was voted on, but boy, it would have looked kind of silly to have given it to somebody else after you saw the way the avalanche went out and won the cup. In large parts of the moves he made, man. He pushed every button and hey, we've been pretty lucky here in this town to watch. Guys that were great athletes championship athletes also kind of show their chops as an executive. First John Elway and now, Joe sack, yeah, and that's pretty rare. Isn't it? To have a guy who's awesome on the ice or on the field, be able to spot talent and have and have a knack for putting a team together and understanding the levers to pull in the buttons to push, 'cause a lot of guys man, a lot of guys are just instinctively so good and they can't explain why and they can't put it together and I know some will accuse John Elway of having a little bit of that later in his career, but he brought us another Super Bowl as an executive and Joe sacking, this award much deserved to me, you look at Jared bednar and that's Jared bednar is just a reflection of Joe sakic's approach and just trusting him to get his team on the right track. A guy who was not well known and gave him the reins and so much deserved a joke sacking and let's go get another one. Let's go get another one and let's see we'll be between the pipes when they try to do it. Next in four down. Second down. Joe sack and the avalanche have a lot of work to do with unrestricted free agents, limited cap space, McKinnon's gonna be looking at a big contract extension of the following season. So this is a chance to get a goal or that they feel is confident and they've seen him play in the league now for a couple of years with the rangers. They feel he can come in and team with Franco's and be a one two punch there. We'll see how that plays out. NHL network at the NHL draft last night kind of round table conversation reacting to the abs and Joe sakic, trading for New York rangers backup goalie. Alexander georgiev, 26 years old, been a backup. And boy, have we seen this before? A couple of years ago with Philip grubauer, the sense that, hey, here's the guy who have given the chance to be the number one guy, is ready to take off. And he did. He did. He really delivered not enough to win in the playoffs, but he was able to parlay what he did with the avalanche into a big contract with Seattle. So it worked there. Clearly worked with Darcy Kemper, who, you know, because of injuries and such, never really had a chance to go out and really solidify himself as the number one guy. Did so with the abs, want a cup and is now going to go get paid. So they're kind of trying it again. They look at this guy georgiev as somebody that they feel if given the chance, can be a number one guy. Three years in a row? Can you do it? Or are you attempting fate here? I think you can do it. I think if you got the right coaching staff, you see players out there that you that have potential that show you something that you like, that fit into your scheme and you believe I can give more out of these guys. And all coaches have that kind of ego, right? And some of them to a fault. They bring in a guy that maybe wasn't great elsewhere, and they think they can turn him into something. Some of them have success doing it. Some of them don't. But I believe that the culture here established by Joe sacking and Jared bednar is the type of culture that can get more out of players that maybe languished somewhere on a roster or didn't really produce you bring them here. They become part of this team. The rising tide lifts all boats. You got Nathan McKinnon out there demanding that guys don't eat chocolate bars and work harder every day. He's got that Michael Jordan mentality. That brings everybody up to his level. So I think, you know, Joe sack, he's doing what he has to do here and hopefully they can get the most out of Georgia. You got that. Georgia, Georgia. I mean, you helped me. I've been there. You say it. Well, at first, I was hearing people say Georgia, and I'm like, is that right? It's Georgie. Yeah, it's Georgian. Georgia. Next in four down. Third down. She pulled all the things and make sure we have chicken. We got a lot of birds. Baby Shannon Sharpe should do Mike Shannon. That's beautiful. Hall of Fame induction speech, introduction speech. Mike Shanahan, talk about well deserved but overdue, among 54 seniors coaches and contributors named as semifinalists for the for the pro football Hall of Fame's class of 2023 also on that list of semifinalists, Dan Reeves and Randy graduate. But let's talk about Mike Shanahan, who you are an unabashed just fan of. You freely admit you owe so much damn. Everything in? My career was dead in the water, Mike. I mean, I was a 49er. I was way down on the depth chart as a wide receiver when and I was about to get cut and Mike Shanahan said, yeah, we'll take a look at him. And I was on an airplane coming out here in the middle of training camp in 2003. I landed at DIA around 9 or 10 p.m.. I got picked up and the next morning I was putting on a Broncos uniform and putting on a new helmet and I grew up a 49er fan. I was playing for the forty-niners. That was a dream come true, but it didn't feel right there. When I got here, it fell right because of the way Mike Shanahan ran this organization. It was like, it was the epitome of class. It almost felt regal to be a part of the Denver Broncos. And when I think about what Mike Shanahan, his philosophy as a coach, and this was a saying he said often, you got to do the little things the right way. It's about the little things the right way. It's not about a complex scheme. It's about running your scheme the right way and doing every little detail correctly and focusing on it. When you talk about the running game, we practiced very hard when it came to running the football. When it was time to bang, do a 9 on 7 at practice, he wanted to see it a certain way and if he didn't, we're going to do those plays again. You run a template period. And then after that period was over, there was a brutal period. We're cracking each other, right? It was full speed, obviously you're not taking them to the ground, but it's full speed, and then he'd read off the plays that we got to redo. Three, 6, 8, 9, ten. Let's do them again. He wanted to see it done a certain way because they're running game was married to the pass game, was married to the play action game. It all has to look the same. He knew what he wanted to see if he didn't see it. We had to do it right. And it translated on game day. You just look at, you know, his track record of the offense is that he ran and the effectiveness, the last couple years were an exception, but I was not the biggest fastest strongest guy out there. I had to rely on my mind and understanding of these concepts. And I learned them from him. And there were so many other players like me who did. So just understanding players, understanding what we needed, understanding when to push forward, went to back off, went to give us a day off. I'm not the only guy who owes my career to Mike Shanahan. So I hope he gets inducted. He deserves it. Next and for them. One, two, three, fourth down. This ball is tagged to deep center field going back it's bar show and he doesn't have a play hits off the top of the wall. Joe will come around easily. And it is back to back

"Yeah. After tea was not the first roommate, but once we got him on a deadline, he asked here was my roommate. Yeah, whatever you did, I got it. You guys had quite a few characters on that team Claude lemieux too. So there was never a dull moment. No, it was not. It was definitely a live lock room. And it was fun. And obviously, when the team is winning, then everything, everything is everything is good. And that was the case. It was really fun atmosphere and fun to be around these guys. And insane character I've always heard is Sean, and he was the first guy I think to leave his equipment on for 24 hours after you guys wanted no one. Did you know that that was going to happen? Or did you see him the next day? Sean didn't take his stuff. It just kept it on. So we're just going through downtown with the cup. And Paul's got the whole full year on for, I think, yeah, all day, 24 hours, whatever it was. I absolutely beauty, but what a clutch player too, his line with Eric messier and Stefani L and they're a phenomenal liquid when we need to shut down other teams upon the top lines and or kill the last minute of the game. They're phenomenal and really big part of the playoffs all the stomach run and the opposers absolutely great guy is awesome just I think living back in Minnesota and when I think back to that time period I would say probably the biggest rivalry in the NHL became you guys in the Detroit red wings had that already started before you got there or do you remember the exact moment when it did transpire? Well, actually the nastiest stuff was before me. So my first year was 98, 99 season and I want to say the big fight when let me I think it was 97, but it's still massive rivalry anytime we play them even regular seasons were just holidays for everyone. People got into it both places then we were Detroit and then usually in the west like the late 90s you had basically four teams that battle it. It was us red wings, stars and blues. Other teams are not really factors that much. It was pretty pretty sorry cap Europe. These teams are spending and this is what it was. And at some point you have to go through remix. And then you too. So that's how you build a rivalry when year after year. You meet them in a class. You go distance. So you go 7 games and nasty stuff happens. And that's exactly what it was. Would you get a little extra nervous before those types of games or did you did you kind of embrace all the hate? Yeah, I kind of embrace it. You knew that these games matter more than just regular just on other games for some reason. And the playoffs were awesome. Just the intensity, the playoffs intensity is already hiked up quite a bit. And these games are even more. So I think it had to be one of the best rivalry in hockey. These days. I always wondered both guys who play with Patrick wa because there's times he's a snapshot. There's times you can't score on. I mean, was this somebody in practice? You didn't even consider shooting high on, like, would he come flying out at guys if they fucked with them? Yeah, you enjoy Robert, you can love, but that is such a competitive guy. There are some, there are some stuff sometimes destroying stuff in the locker room, stuff like that. When we didn't have the first or second good period, whatever, it happened. Patty was just passionate guy. When the games, games were on the line, you are not having it in the head then on the other side. 31 four cups to it through it, Canadians do it with the just tough tough competitor that he was passionate. And especially young guys, rookies, you don't want to go near high or near his head or anything like that. That's for sure. Was he the vocal leader in the locker room? One of them? Yeah, there's a bunch of guys, but patty patty sometimes snapped there. It takes we're not going well, we were not playing well. And how did it definitely let you know that this is not acceptable? This just can not continue and yeah, he was one of the not the leader, but during the 2001 Stanley Cup, you guys are actually down three games to two to the Devils. Did any panic set in the room at all? I know a lot of veterans in the room. But what was the room like after you guys were down in that series? Well, obviously you were ought to be in the opposite situation or you're up three, two, but we were three, two, going in the New Jersey. The sunlight cap is ready there, right? For ceremony and but we had such a variant team that not many things earlier rattle us that year we won the rigorous, we won the president's trophy 118 points. I think we lost like 16 games that year. So the team is used to winning and even if you're down inside of the series or down inside a game, it didn't really rattle us that much. Do you have that one year part of the winning team that the feeling, the confidence and the locker room that nothing really rattles the team so and obviously you can go the other way too when you're part of a losing team. It's just exactly the opposite. So we had a veteran team nothing little rattles of that much and I think what was the game three nothing or four nothing. I think game 6 somewhere that and we send it to game 7 to Denver. And a legendary hockey moment of Joe sack of cannon the cup over to ray bourque. I'm guessing nobody talked about that before the game Joe didn't tell anyone because there was a game to be won. So how shocked were you and how memorable was it to see ray bourque that emotional with all his family there? Very emotional. It was basically it was actually raised second year without so great spend obviously the whole career in Boston and then we got him on a deadline one year and the first you didn't work out second year, we got it done and it was such a treat to have grave with us such a competitor like do you really could see the preparation for the games and practices what he did how much it meant to him and then what it takes to stay that long and played it all in high level for such a long time when to eat it. It was definitely ray was probably one of the reasons why we wanted to because everyone was pulling for him too, not like we want to just win for him, but he was a big part of it. You could see how much it means to him and then watching him crying the whole family crying when we wanted and Joe hanging in the cup. It was just things that you will remember a rest of your life. Some of the stories are fans like to hear are the ones not on the ice. Is it true that one Halloween Peter.

"The apps kind of help me out with hiring some English teacher, but back to Chris. He was an awesome guy. Performer. Definitely, it helps. So I was not the only rookie there. Chris was with me there. And he was a phenomenal player. When the games were on the line, he was just phenomenally produced and what a competitor, great guy, and obviously doing really fine job in rangers now. Yeah, he is. Sorry, just to go back to what you said so that the team hired you an English instructor. So is this kind of after practice a couple of days a week, you'd go over and just basically like talk with them or were you actually doing different grammar? Like, how did they go about teaching you that? And were you almost almost a little annoyed? Like I want to learn English, but I really don't want to do this after practice. Right, like you're absolutely gas after practice. It feels so hard to start after practice. And then you're going to talk to the English teacher for a couple of hours a day. But I knew it's better for me. It's not easy when you're in a locker room, guys, guys talking about whatever and you have no idea what they're talking about. Same thing with coach. So it was kind of a little bit difficult, but I think in a way, once you get through it, it makes you tougher. I don't think nothing ever surprising life anymore. And I think at the end, it served me well. But the first couple of two or three months were tough. Meanwhile, with some of the things I hear about bob Hartley, it's probably a good thing you didn't speak English. I think so. Bob, sometimes run the English French and when are you in French? And then it was kind of ugly. When I actually Alex sanguine it was my second year, Alex dengue came there too, and so when they started speaking French, he was usually not good. But bob was a tough coach, but a very successful coach. Anywhere he went. He won. So great to him. Impressive. I mean, it might be a rumor. Did it get to the point where even after you guys had won your cup that he got locked out of the locker room, or is that just an old wise? That never happened. Okay. It was just a rumor, but I got to give you one story. I think it was my first year. So we're running some drill, and I screwed up the drill a couple times, probably not knowing exactly what's going on there. And bob lost it on me. And he goes, hey, hey, go sit on the bench. So I'm sitting on a bench. Guys, the practice of practice is running. For like 15 minutes, I'm just watching the guys from the bench. They're just the drills aren't going on, and I'm just watching. So that's unbelievable. Bible stuff, like especially on Iraqis, but after the first year, then he was fine, and he was actually really good to me. Was that the first time that you'd ever experienced a coach that was maybe that intense and that hard towards the players or had you? In check, you had some tough coach about this, this was a different level. Definitely. And you're like, okay, you got to deal with it. But at the end, I think it does make you a little bit tougher and things don't surprise you anymore. Now, one quick one, we're about bob hardly here. Would he speak a little bit differently to forsberg and sack it more so than the other guys know? Because I can't imagine him raising his voice to sack it. Yeah, like maybe a little bit, but I think at the end of the day, then you know, he's a meaning well. But obviously, any coach, you're going to treat the top players a little bit differently, right? They have a little bit longer reach than others. That's just kind of think. And I always know differently, bob. Did you know just how good those guys were and so you started playing with them? Joe, Joe and Peter? Yeah, like heard of all them and then once you step, step on the edge for them. And especially like watching them daily during the practices. I think it helps all the players, not just me, you see how they deal with different situations on the ice on their pressure. What do they do? Obviously it's awfully difficult to duplicate it because there are superstars and very few people can do this when they did. But both really just hard workers and impressive players. It definitely helped me to spend on the same line with them at my first NHL game was with Joe sack again and key Jones. I showed you all these basket and wife. How the hell did jonesy get on sack a collage? He could talk his way into any situation, jonesy. That's probably not enough. I think that the most legendary, I guess there's a lot of peer force, but the thing that I think of is the year, I think it was all one O two. He missed the entire regular season. Didn't play one game and comes back and leads the playoffs and scoring. I know you've seen so many wild things that he accomplished, but that must have been like mind-blowing to see him come back first game of the playoffs after so long and just immediately light it up. Well, it's starting basically so 2001 we won the cup and the training camp in Sweden. And Peter is a big part of it, basically started up in the stock room. So we have a training camp in sago, it was basically the same team when we won the cup O one plus a few other extra guys. And Pete announces there that he's retiring. And we were like, what? What? No one saw it coming. So we're in Sweden right then. Actually, the cam training camp was cut short because of 9 11. So the twin towers went down and we left Europe earlier because of that. But had a priority in Sweden here press conference and I was retirement. Wow. What's going on here? So Pete missed the whole top night at cafe Oprah. Yeah, yeah. Yeah, we spent some time there. And so Peter announced his retirement, misses the whole season, then he comes back and he just lights out in playoffs. He averaged two points a game or something like that in playoffs, missing entire season. Who can do that? Unbelievable, impressive. So at the time, I mean, was that already the beginning of the foot injuries that really plagued the rest of his career, where he was almost. It was part of it. He was dealing with some pain and it was just too annoying for him. And he called it a quiz there. And we just won the cup, right? And we're just kind of ready to go for a run. And you're arguing the best player is gone. You're like, wow, that's a massive blow. Was Theo flurry you.

"I pissed a lot of capitals fans off by saying, I think they're the only dead weight in the east that's going to make it. The 8 in the east are set. I don't think that Washington is a threat at all. The other 7 teams I could all consider contenders. Every single one, there is no guarantee coming out of the east other than the fact that Washington will not move past the first round. I know their fans are pissed that I've said that. I just, they didn't address any type of goaltending. I think they're a little bit soft. I think that they're back to the days of where they're very one dimensional. Bactrim is not the same player that he used to be. He's been dealing with his injuries, Washington is not a threat in the east. Am I wrong here? They're going to get a wild card mind the way. They're not scaring anybody right now. Put it that way. I mean, right now it would be the Panthers playing the capitals and the Panthers would be probably -8 minus one 85. Easily, you know? Maybe -200. So I'm in agreement there now. If they could get a check catches fire, if they can get some sick sick gold and then you never know, but I'm with you because them in Toronto are the only two that really can't do anything. Let's see, Colorado picked up a few more pieces. We talked about Manson late last week. I think Colorado's AHL team could make a run at this point. That's how many guys they picked up. They added arturi lechon and they picked him up from Montreal. He's going to be RFA this year. Colorado, I'm sorry, Montreal is retaining 50% of that. Colorado sent the other way, prospect Justin baron, highly titled prospect in a second and 24. So they paid a little bit of a price there. They also picked up Andrew Claude liano from San Jose. Cozy, a 5th and 24 back to San Jose and biz, you mentioned the Tyson Joe's trade earlier. They had traded Tyson Joe's to Minnesota in return. They got back Niko sturm as well. So lekin, earlier I said it's a great trade. I was like, who? He is a puck hound. And he's been the one bright spot in that Montreal lineup all season long. A very, very under the radar type of trade for Colorado, just adds to the fact that they, if they had any underlying issues as maybe a weakness, they don't have it now. They are a juggernaut. They are Goliath and they're going in as probably the biggest favorite to win a Stanley Cup in the last 20 years. I would say I would say no, I would say they're tied with another team. Tampa Bay in 2018, 19 who lost in the first round. That's a little scary, but remember, they broke the record, didn't they? For most points, or they were right up there. So I know what you're saying, this abs team's on absolute wagon, but so is Tampa that first year. I do not think Colorado's losing in the first round, but I'm just reminding you, when you think it's going to be easy, it never really is. And there is a chance the color avalanche could play the Vegas golden knights in the first round. So having said all of that, I love the moves they made. They went all in, they have to at this point. They got one more year, I think, of McKinnon making this short dough, right? And then the monster deal hidden. But lacking in is a guy that you want in the playoffs. And also, just quickly, I wanted to shout out Seattle because what a great job they did in getting about 400 draft picks. They got a bunch of guys. They knew they could trade at the deadline. They've had a tough year, but they are going to be set up if they draft well over the next two years. Going to Colorado, just what they needed, puck out, I love how you described and that's so true in your face annoying to play against playoff type player, but then Montreal goes out. That that just embarrassed the first round pick. He can play. That's a nice deal for Montreal, Montreal did a good job in terms of who knows if lechon is looking in RFA. Yes, yes, oh man, they would have had to pay him some dough, but Colorado now to go out and then even get cogliano who can play on that fourth line, he could play up and down the lineup a little bit, playing the fourth line. He's speedy. He can PK. They have all the pieces you needed. And I'll say this, I was incorrect about giving them more to my car. He's still going to be right there and he still could win it, but him with Devon taves. That is the best D pair in the lead. That I can agree with. That is the best D pair in the league. So you got them to going, and then after that, it's just a team that keeps coming at you in waves. So a great job by Joe sack, and the entire week's leading up to the deadline. We knew Colorado was going to be in the hunt for everyone. And they probably would have got Claude Giroux had he not said I won't go there. Seattle with 9 picks in the first two rounds coming up in the next two months. If and then if they can struggle a little next year, I know that sounds crazy, but then all of a sudden you're getting bedard or you're getting the Russian what's his name? The 16 year old from unbelievable. I think that's a good one, all right, because if they get, if they struggle again and get the first overall pick, I know that that's a far ways off, but to have that many pictures. This is a big deal. How about Montreal going from Cup final to rebuilt? And we said it. We said it before the year. Yeah. I mean, it was Ken Hughes. That's the guy's name. And he said they were going to keep lacking in up to about 2 o'clock, I think. And then finally, I think they got an offer where they're getting a first round pick defenseman. We're going to trade them. I don't know how much stock you guys put in a Twitter, but a lot apparently a lot of people were saying I put a ton of stock into it. Literally nobody in the world can do this. No, I fucking love it. A lot of GM saying, oh, now the salary cap matters. That was their rebuttal to Kent Hughes because he went from agent now to general manager. When you're playing both sides guys, sometimes you can come back to bite in the ass. But you're doing your job either way, right? You're trying to get your guys much scumbag either way. All right, moving right along here though. St. Louis blues, they were pretty quiet up until today they added defenseman Nick Letty and Luke with kowalski from Detroit. Let he's going to be UFA this summer. They sent Asuka sun course the other way along with Jake walman in a third and 23 to the red wings, Stevie white loading up on some stuff. But St. Louis, we talked at cam Jansen and we're going to bring him on in a little bit as well, but I don't know. I don't think they needed to take it too much..

"Way to beat us was like he had to rip the pocket the net that was like way far away. And that, I mean, I feel like at that age too, I didn't appreciate how cool it was until I got older and but it's definitely one of the cooler memories I have a famine. And he's exactly what you guys think. He's super humble guy. Just quieter and just I was always impressed by him. He's the reason I wore number 19. Yeah, I think I started at the start. I was a big inline hockey guy, growing up. And I was playing goalie for a while. I don't think my dad, my dad had a harder time with me playing goal and I did actually, I feel like, I feel like goalie's tough on parents, but I think he pretty much made me switch. I heard it, 'cause you had a body like a milk bag. When you were drafted Tom Brady body, that's why you went in the 5th round. All right, and I say shit right now. I always joke. I didn't get invited to the combine. And I think if I got invited to the come ride, I probably wouldn't have gotten drafted. Another guy, he talked about Joe sack saying that to your father, another guy, even before I think you'd made your impact in the NHL was Paul Korea when he was asked about some of the prospects in the system. He says, I think this Troy Terry is going to be a very special player and so obviously that I feel like these guys who were special players when they see a special player, they're able to tell right away, they're just something about them that's going to make them last in the NHL. Yeah. Well, I mean, that's Paul has been someone that I feel like Paul is someone that, you know, with everything. He doesn't come around very often and I don't get to see him that often. You know, like team who shows up every once in a while, but Paul is someone that, you know, it's just an he's a huge deal on our organization. And he's someone that I know has always been a fan of mine because kind of him and him and Jim Montgomery were line mates back in college and they're good buddies. So that's how he so that I know that's how he used to watch me when I was in college before I even came to the organization and everything. So he's been someone that I feel like means a lot to me, but I don't I've only met him like one time, but I know he's a fan of mine and I'm a huge fan of his. So he's, you know, he's a guy that I looked up to like crazy growing up. So it's cool to have all these guys say things about you and I just wish that I believed it in myself a few years ago and it took me a little less time to figure it out. The team, you're talking about 1993 main, one of the best documentaries for college hockey. I think ever created out of the Woods. Must be on YouTube. It's the season long following. I'm sure you've seen that, right? Yeah, it's great. And it was fun for us to because Monty had hair back then and all that, so it's a pretty good idea. So there's also a bit of a fun fact. The last time before you ended up winning the national championship, the last time the hat trick was scored in a national championship game, was Monty back when he wanted with Maine. Now, when you guys went to the national championship, one of your teammates, how do you say his last name? Leuko savages. Leuko savages at the county one. Yeah, he ended up potting a hat trick as well, so it's kind of like a funny thing. Was it brought up in the locker room afterward with money? Well, they showed it. He never said anything about it, but they, as soon as he scored the third one, they were like, they had that stat ready. It was on the jumbotron in there as soon as he scored it. And it had just a picture of Monty back when.

"Only offer I ever got. And it was the first offer and I accept it on the spot. So it was the only place I wanted to go. And then glos decky actually got fired like a week after I committed. So I was kind of unsure if I still had scholarship or not, but you gave him a full ride. That's full Nick Saban right there just finding out about the other college and coming over and cock block. And you want to move to their knees. What's that? I don't even know if they had seen me play at that point. I think they just didn't want to see it happen. So growing up in Denver too, you got some chance to play on Joe sack ex kids minor hockey team. And I hear stories about during the lockout him coming on the ice with you guys. You guys would go over to Joe sacks place. He would sometimes put on the goalie pads and you would get the shoe on Joe sack. Yeah, I mean, I remember my dad. He came up to my dad, 'cause it was during the lockout year. I don't know how long we had to have been like 7 or 8. We were really young. And I remember he told my dad, he was like, I think your son's could be really good hockey player. And so that was always special to me. And I do remember going over to his house and so he put on the full goalie pads. We're in the driveway. And me and his son Mitch would shoot on him and there was a net that was like, I don't know. So far away. And basically, if he made the save, like, you could just tell how competitive he was. Like, he couldn't just let us shoot on. And there was a way for him to win. If we shot on him and he made it safe, he would drop the gloves and then rip a puck like at the net that was like, I don't even know how far it was far. So like if he made the save, his.

"This is awesome. So he's like, everything's happening, right? And he likes and he goes, hey, to me, sensitive mccarty gets one more fight he's out of the game. He go ahead, right? I go no, no, it's not accurate. I said he only got a double minor. The first time. And he did so, Marty, dude. Right. He was a double diner. So that was the biggest thing he should have been out of the game. By the end of that, because they gave him a double minor for jumping claw the mule, and he should have got to the instigator. All of it and throwing out, but he stayed in. And like you said, it was kind of like the turnaround. Completely. I'll be honest about that situation. That's crazy of things I've done in my career. I knew we were doing the wrong thing. I knew that was a need to fight that team because we weren't built to beat them up. I played on tough teams in Washington, especially with ruby Allen may. I mean, there were 7 or 8 guys ahead of me to fight on the avalanche. I'm looking. There's like four of us that are in the same category here. It was an entirely different team. And it was a big mistake. And I had a conversation with Mark Crawford about it after. I said, we did the wrong thing. We should have let clothe get beat up. You take a few punches. Okay. And let's move on. But the fact that our guys were so competitive, they were just and they're invested in a probably more than I was because I wasn't there the year before. Yeah, yeah. I had a different perspective on what about I feel like the most interesting man in the world, Peter forsberg. So many people wonder about him, but he's not in the public eye, but when he was on, I mean, one of the greatest players ever and you witnessed that right in the I played on the same line as Peter because Claude was out. So I was my linemate when I arrived there. I never, I mean, I had so many tap ins. It was crazy. And he was such a great guy. And he loved when I would get other players going on the opposition. He knew that I'd have his back. I had to fight that Todd Simpson once again Calgary because he had Peter. And I jumped in there and I got killed, right? But that's what you want to do. I always tell the tough guy on the other team. You want to fight me hit our best player. I'll be right. I'm going to fight. I'm not going to fight you because you're asking me to watch it. But you do something, I'm going to fight you, and I'm going to lose, but it's okay. And that's the way Peter always liked that part of it. We were great friends. He came to brantford with me once we landed in Toronto. He goes, where you live around here? I go, yeah, just down the road. He goes, let's go. And we went and stayed the night, my hometown, and he went out to the bar, local bars, what he's pub and grub. And there's Peter forsberg and these guys and couldn't believe that they would see him in that environment, right? So friendly. Just the best. He was just a great guy. I room with Joe sack and complete with Joel. We were on the second line there was Adam deadmarsh myself and of course Joe in the middle. And then we had forsberg at center on the top line with Valerie Kaminsky called lemu. And we had Mike Ricci, Scott young and Rene Courbet. I mean, this team is incredible that the one three three of the book that surprised me was like how you said that Patrick wow was far and above the best leader that you'd ever played with. And probably the most intense guy you've ever seen. He was. Joel was a great captain because he allowed other people to lead as well. And Patrick was one of the best leaders with Dale hunter another one that just commanded everyone's attention. You had a good game. It wasn't that you scored two goals or it was if you did all the little things right and he recognized it. You could have a game where you didn't have a goal and he'd come up and he'd go you had a great game tonight. And you did. It wasn't both so you're so he would be dialed into the whole play all game. All game. His mind was what separated from my coach. And I think he's like he would be such a great coach, especially now that he's had experience in the NHL. He was phenomenal that way of the most respect for the way that he handled a locker room. Penalty killed he was in charge of. He'd bring the guys in and draw stuff up. I'd never seen that from a goaltender. And I know they've pasted a few sees on goalies before in the past, but he was a true captain. And Joel was a great captain because he allowed other people to lead and he didn't have to be the only voice. And that's a great part of leadership as well. Is that because guys who they are or how they say what they're saying? Is it a little bit of accommodation? It's about how they say it. It's just the fact you know when you've done something a small thing really well that helped the team win. Right. And maybe it's a block shot. Maybe it's a little simple play along the wall, getting the puck out of the defensive zone. Or maybe it's staying disciplined at a time where you may have retaliated. He saw all of that. And I hadn't seen that before. I got you from a goal. From a goalie, right? And I've always felt like I was smart enough player to know what was needed at a certain time. And he just had he took that to a whole other level. Actually, do you know one part of that ESPN game? Well, the Detroit Colorado game, the replay of that night. Remember ESPN used to replay the game later that night. They actually edited out that whole the whole fight sequence because I was in college at the time and we all watched the live of course we didn't know what was gonna happen. This is pre Internet pre whatever. And we all put the replay on 3 o'clock in the morning because we just don't college and they edited the game like and they took that whole fight sequence out of the game they replayed it later the night, which is kind of a fun fact. At three in the morning fun fact. Yeah, I like it. Hello, it can be 23 in the afternoon. But he forgot who won. Watch it again. There you go. Boys, I don't know if you want to move to the reason we're here in Philadelphia if you had any more Colorado questions. But again, it's a shitty it's a shitty one, but you guys had a three one series lead to Edmonton the next season. Well, you guys are still a cup contender. We blow that lead and you're out in the first round. I mean, I have a lot of those memories, actually. Thanks for bringing that up. I was on three teams. Three different organizations that were up three one in a series and lost. Shit. It happened to me. It actually happened. The reason I think it happened because my first year in Washington, when I started in the minors, I got called up for the playoffs. And I knew I wasn't going to get in the lineup and we're just skating every day. Barry trots to skate this. And the capitals were up three one over the penguins. This is a 92. And I'm like, man, I don't know if I'm enjoying this a whole lot. Like I'm not really part of the team. I wouldn't mind like this thing ending sometimes, so I can go home and enjoy my summer. So I'm basically doing a little low 5 every time the penguin score, you know?.

"And of course, knowing you more now through the first half of this interview, I understand why it went down the way it went down. So getting traded from the avalanche of flyers when you were sick. Very ill for a few weeks. Oh, that's so that's the capitals. That's when I got traded from the caps to the avalanche. Well, that's what I want to talk about. Yeah. So I was shown he and I were fighting again because I wasn't playing well, and I was one day I'm laying down on the ice after practice. I'm counting the lights up in the seal and I'm just laying on the ice doing like snow angels. He comes over. What's wrong now? You know, and I go, I said, I'm exhausted. He goes, that's it. You're going to the Mayo Clinic. I didn't feel that exhausted, but okay. So I went down the street to get blood work taken. It wasn't the Mayo Clinic. It was like the local guy with a stick a needle in your arm. So I get that done. I'm waiting for these results. I am feeling pretty run down, right? So it's on my mind. I've been thinking, maybe I hope something's not really wrong. I didn't think there was, but maybe. And I don't hear anything a week goes by, get the game against the islanders on the road. I've got a toothbrush in my suit jacket. That's all I brought. It's a one night one night trip. And I wasn't a great big unpack and stuff, and I wasn't a close horse. I wore whatever, whatever I had, and I would wear it for a few weeks in a row. Turn your underwear inside out. Yeah, whatever. You know, leave the underwear there in the laundry bag, get it clean. All the old tricks. So I'm there, and I'm wondering, I keep asking the trainer staying long. Did you get the results? You know, no, no, we didn't. So the game's getting ready to start the dressing room getting ready for the pre game skate. I go on the ice. I come back off the ice after the skate, and I've got one skate on, one's getting sharpened and not shown he walks in and he goes, hey, step in my office. This is bizarre. At this time, I know I'm just getting ready for the game. I'm sitting beside hunts, and I look over at him and he's just didn't know what was happening. So I walk with one skate on one off and walk in on unbalanced as usual. And he sets me down and I'm thinking to myself, I'm going he must've got the results and they're bad. That's all I'm thinking. This is bad. My heart is dropped, right? In my stomach. So I sits down and he looks across. I look at him, he goes, I've got some terrible news for you, and I'm like, oh, my God. It's happening. There's something I'm dying right now. So he's like, you've been traded. And I go, oh, thank God. And he's like, you're taking this a lot better than I thought you would, right? This is amazing. To who? And he's like, you got your traded to the Colorado avalanche. I go, oh, even better. Right? He's like, I can't wagon. I thought you'd be a little more upset. No, no, I'm not upset. I said, I love you as a person, but as a coach, I had enough audiences laughed. So I go who do I get traded for? We can't tell you. Michael, well, I want to know I got traded for. I want to see what value I have. I've been fighting my whole career thinking that I'm a better player than I am. Tell me who I got traded for, so I'll tell you. So I call my wife was my fiance at that time. Lauren, I'm like, hey, I couldn't get a hold of her because this is like pay phone times. And prior to that, I had no money. And so the teams like go upstairs arena, like walking around for the crowd is. And call the avalanche. I go for what? They go, well, you gotta get on a flight. You're leaving. So all the fans are in the corridor walking around. I got my hockey bag on my shoulder. I got three sticks in my hand. And I have a quarter that I bought from the equipment guy to call the avalanche. I call Pierre Laquan. I'm like, hi, skeith Jones. Hey, how you doing? We got a flight for you out of JFK. I'm thinking, where is JFK? I wasn't paying attention to anything. He goes, well, you need to take a taxi. You need to go there, get the plane. So I go back downstairs, and I'm like, does anybody have any money I can bore the teams are already on the ice or plate? The game started. So the trainer gave me like 50 bucks to pay the cabbie, took the cab to the airport, walked up, they like, here's your ticket. And I look at it. So this says coach. And they're like, yeah, I don't know that's a mistake. This is a first class, right? And they're like one of the avalanches. So they're like, no, no, it's going on all its first class. Okay, so it put me in first class. So I'm sitting there. I'm stopping in Atlanta. I still don't know who I'm traded for. That's all that's on my mind now. Who do I get traded for? So I'm having a cocktail on the plane. I land in Atlanta. I haven't got a hold of my fiance or wife now. To tell her, I've just been traded. So we've been traded. So I get there and lands in Atlanta. I call her and I go, hey, I've been traded. She goes, yeah, I know. I go, well, how'd you know? She goes, I saw it on the bottom line, my dad saw it on ESPN2 on the bottom line that I go, well who did I get traded for? She goes, Chris Simon and somebody named Curtis decision. I go, that's pretty good. Yeah, yeah, that's good. And a first rounder went with me, right? So Simon toughest guy in the league at that time or one of them. And the decision was an alternate captain. They just won the Stanley Cup. That's pretty good. I like that. So I don't know if the avalanche liked it by the end of it, but anyway, I land in Lance so I get on the Flint and land a flight to LA, show up there. Next morning, they're having an afternoon game at 1 o'clock. I don't even know what time I got there. So I go down to breakfast. They just won the cup. They've got patch legends. Patrick wah. Joe sack, Peter forsberg, Adam foot. Ken Valerie convinced that marsh Adam deadmarsh reached Scott young, my Greece. I mean, this team's awesome man. So I walk in, they're all eating breakfast. You know, this is the first time I've ever been traded and I'm really excited, right? So I come in, I sit down and they're all talking. I go don't worry, boys. I'm here. Cup number two.

"Just as this quickly jeff. So you mentioned. Now that they've james is a three-man after doing his eighteen months obviously disgraced etc accessible. Where is he. What is any information of now. And for example when you're talking about g mccauley and his testimony before he passed away. Good graham get charged again and perhaps do more time so it's one of those things where yet. yeah absolutely. I mean certainly you know. Spend more time behind bars. There are some heat saying there's some dependence because we just don't know the laws were were certainly embarrassing back then. There's still somewhat embarrassing now. But they're getting better. I think there. There's a school of thought in the legal community that you know. Graham was essentially sentenced in a combined. Ten and a half years and had he had that many victims that he's has you. You might not get ten and a half years in jail. You know but there's also the certainly the opportunity particularly because they also kind of clump them into times. This isn't you know this is why you gotta be careful right because if you were on swift current and you're you know you're listening to this podcast and you're thinking okay. Why don't really wanna come forward. You know because if it's gonna to anything yada yada yada but that's not the case but if there are things were right now. There's a certain time. Line of winnie us right. So you have to ask the question. How many people. And he asked me that question. I say doesn't matter i see you give them a sentence for each and every person right of course but the law might group them together like Describing to me like you know if you murdered ten people is same as murdering twenty people did. It gets to a certain point where they just kind of stop. And that's in canada to be clear. Gotcha in the states. Graham james would never see the light of day he would be. Oh yeah he'd be in the jerry sandusky executive life sentences who's that yeah and just like you would you wouldn't be getting you wouldn't be getting three and a half years for sure for sheldon and then all obviously for all the subsequent abuses charges and convictions that he later got but the reality is is that you know. This is not saying that you need to find someone but there are. There's that ten years in winnipeg. were you become. Dangerous offender is in different periods. So you can prove kind of like an entire continuous thing. So it's i'm not going to say there's an added value to a person who is abused in winnipeg earlier on versus someone who who had to go through those horrendous acts loan swift current they all will add up in graham james will e still held accountable for it and accountability is a very important thing right it adds to it courage of coming for all those things positive. Things coming forward are endless. I also understand the stroz and also understand. Each person is going to deal with it the best way. They know how. I will say this on on that line. Is that the people. I've talked to whether it'd be survivors whether it be people who have worked in this industry in this industry for for decades. It's that you know it doesn't go away. Rice-growing never disappears and more often than not. Tell sharing your story is ultimately the first step to real recovery so again. I'm not trying to suggest that you can't recover. That people have trying just the information. That is kinda received more regular. So where is he now. James said to be living in montreal. You know it's there's some people who aren't all that surprise that the places he chooses are tabacchi lived in spain for a period of time in mexico and again i gotta be careful here but you know the their sex laws aren't exactly the same as other places so you know from what i understand leaving in montreal working for a tech company. Apparently you know. What does that mean in. Montreal can tell you. I don't know if it's sales or if he's in front of the camera you know to me. I don't really know what you know what. No one really knows what he's doing you know. There's rumors that he changed his his name to michael which is his middle name regardless of where he is. He's got the freedom to do whatever he wants. That's incomprehensible but last few things free. Jeff you mentioned Theorin flurry and why is he. Not in the hockey hall of fame because his stats are ridiculous. He's got over a thousand points. Eighteen hundred penalty minutes for a guy that was five foot six and just wanna stanley cup and all the gold medal and was just the lifeblood of every team he was on. Why is he not in the hockey hall of fame now. I mean you'd have to sit down and talk to the people with the influence and stuff to get the real. No no of course. Of course that's not a cop out on the answer. Just kind of you know to tell you. I don't know. But my my strong indication. And i mean i don't know if anyone's followed. I think it's the book. The book exposes a lot of names. It hockey in a you know. Obviously a negative spotlight. It drags people in who has influence. You know guys like joe sack occur in there you know just even mentioning him probably has a bit of a ripple effect with hockey. Canada ran those decision makers and just kind of exposing hockey for what it was essentially. Junior hockey was kinda continues to be with the class. Action lawsuit. that not everything. But this isn't an anti hockey thing but the reality is theo. Fleury deserves to be in the hall of fame. I mean not only like his is his point speak for themselves but the fact. That guy did it at the height in weight that he was at in an era where it wasn't like neo. Flurry would flourish even more so than you already did today. You kidding me. Hey, Avalanche one last night 4 to 1. That means they are down to 15 games to hoist up Lord Stanley's Cup. Let's talk a little NHL hockey, Shall we? Let's bring it. Barry Melrose, former NHL head coach, current analyst for the NHL network and ESPN and Bury it, Zbynek minutes since we've had the opportunity to catch up with you as you watch the game last night, and as you have watched this very short, abbreviated season. How have you handicap the avalanche Getting to this point so far? Why? I think the story would have been at the Avalanche head and I got this far. I think that they're awesome. Uh, they're very awesome Team all those young superstars. From drafting a couple years ago. Now we're all in their prime on. They're they're They're playing great. They drafted well, Joe sacked. He's done a great job. Uh Jared Bednar has done a great job. Bye. I love watching you play last night. They were by far the better club. The score. Flattered thing. Lewis big time. And you know they they string a few of these games like the head last night, never charged last night because the fact you know if they've been waiting for this moment to play playoffs again for a long time. But you know, they look so good. Just they didn't look like they had a weakness Last night. They just and ST Louis is a very club, their own experience club to play very hard, so the handle them on again. Even then, the game say Cole's right to the end. But you know it was the score. He's even 66171 very easy with the way the way Colorado was throwing that park around. Barry Last night, Man I saw I saw a sense of desperation out of the Colorado AVS away that they were skating. They looked like they were playing with the purpose. And as a former athlete, I can always see when one team Has that drive that desire that that want to and last night. It just popped out on the on the screen last night. Watching that game is it often that you see that kind of energy and effort in the playoffs or as you say that's just playoff hockey. No, the playoffs. Your Ah, cut above prayer. Parky is much, much tougher, much greater here. Much meaner guys. Guys that never blocked shots and down there blocking shots, guys. You know that Just take stupid families now aren't taking super families anymore. They're doing the little things the important thing blocking s O. I was. I was really impressed with Colorado. I I I've watched him all year long. I think they're one of the most talented teams in the NHL. But Vegas is one of the most talented teams in the NHL. Also, Tampa Bay is one of the most talented teams in the NHL. Florida's one will tell James immunity also, you know, everybody can beat everybody on a given night. But last night I did. I just saw a team. I didn't think was gonna be the night and I don't think Enough is being made off Landeskog. I thought he was fantastic. You know McCain and gets all the great glory, which he should. He's the best player. No one's arguing that but I thought last night landed. Start reading look like the leader of that team to me. The way he stood up against great and Shan and stood up for a teammate that that really is winning team winning teams do that teams are going places do that They do the little things that I mentioned, like blocking shots or or fighting when you have to. And I saw that out to Colorado last night. Let me ask you about this because you know, once again as a former football player. Always talk about two sports that you have to have great vision in and I think that's really golf and baseball. But last night on that on that land of Scott goal that puck was slamming right at him, and he redirected it in for the goal. Very on average. Do all the guys that play hockey have great vision. Yeah, if you if you ever go to a golf tournament and your handicap in and there's some hockey players there, take them. His hockey players can all go. They can all hit the ball the same thing. Motion team wait. Enter as a baseball swing hockey has the same thing. So hockey players and and then hockey has the same. McKay body weighted they move with the weight transfer hockey players can flat out play. Golf is no doubt about that. What about the vision? The vision I'm saying? Like, if you had a kid with who was struggling, seeing the puck has to be a problem, so you must have great vision as well. Yeah. There you watch. We always say the hockey players have great hand eye coordination, then they certainly do. There's some unbelievable deflections. Last night you saw Crosby's on opening night where he did it one handed. There was another one of those last night terraced ankle. I think for Carolina got 1 to 1 handed, eh? So you have to be Oh, there said for gold score. Joe Pavelka is a great example. You guys in the West Nile Joe Pavelski. He practices in touching, tipping apart every practice. They just talk about how already works and how we practice and he always gets 15 to 20 goals a year just on reflections in the slot, so it's work. If it doesn't it comes natural, but it's also you can make it better and And the great goal scorers work on that all the time. You know a lot of the people that have talked about the Avalanche this year. I've obviously talked about goaltending, and we know when you look at the teams that have hoisted the cup here in in Colorado, you had a very good netminder back there and Patrick Watts. But Philip grew powers had a pretty darn good here. He only had 10 losses on the season. Do you think that he is the caliber of goaltender that can take this team to the promised land. Period, You know, groove are has played well in the playoffs. You know, the problem is When you have Ah, talented team like this. You go into the playoffs, and then everyone thinks you're just gonna win every serious horse straight for straight. And all of a sudden the goaltender gets beat on on the shot. Maybe should have stopped at all. Is it all way? Our goaltending? Brutal. We gotta get a goaltender The sun. We're gonna get a goaltender. The bar is fine you need for 40. Tonight is changing Bobrovsky, I think and making a goaltending change like 11 game into the playoffs, stuff like that, that that's a tough thing to do. Coaches get good hired to make that deal and make that move. And if they feel you know, grew bar is not the right goaltender than they can move. But hey, doesn't have to win. The games grew bar. He just has to make sure he stops the ones you're supposed to stop. And for the most part this season, he's done that His numbers are very good, and it's hard playing on a team that doesn't give you many shots. I know that sounds crazy,.

"We need to go get something now. No i really. Don't i have a hard time looking at this particular market in guys who could get moved Who have been mentioned as potential. You know trade pieces at the deadline in in having them be a guy that you look at go ohno while now. What are we going to. Do you know in the knights. Aren't the team sort of doing that. Which i mean in in in a way. I always go back to that old saying about you. Know if you can't recognize the fish at the poker table and you are the fish and it's sort of like the same thing like the nights are always the one that that are being re proactive. They're the ones that everybody else has sort of had to guess. React to in the hypothetical that you're presenting. They went and got mark stone. You know they went. Got robin lehner. Last year they were the. Oh bleep team. I guess you could say for everybody else in in the former now pacific division but which we call the west division so i don't think they would feel any pressure you know in that sense regardless i mean if colorado it feels like colorado colorado is the one team that maybe could make a swing. Don't know their exact cap situation. They got two point six million dollars cap space as we're talking here. They're going to have approximately three point. Two million dollars a cap space at the deadline so before they will probably look to add a backup goalie some group our insurance and they're also a team that could try to at least do some sort of swing because coming up this off season. Kilmore car is an our fay. He's going to get paid their captain. Gabriel landis gog as he's going to have to get paid and they've got a couple other guys up as well so this might be one of their last chances to really kind of quote unquote goal for it to these guys before certain people end up getting a little bit more expensive not to turn this into an avalanche podcast. But i mean obviously. They're playing incredibly well and pizza kind of joke the other day about you know they have to keep pace because he's not sure colorado's ever gonna lose again. So if you're joe sacking you're sitting there in denver and you feel like you know. This team is really steamrolling along. Maybe don't wanna mess with it but at the same time. Like if you're going to add you're gonna go for it. This is the year and with the playoff structure and what sort of presented for them. I mean colorado is the one team in this division. That feels like if they're going to take a swing at if they're going to jump on the jump in the pool you know if somebody's gonna do it from the division. They feel like the team. I guess maybe.
