Soto, Tatis Jr. hit long home runs, Padres beat Yankees 5-1 in series opener
"The Padres hit two two out homers to defeat the Yankees 5 to one. Randy Vasquez making his major league debut for New York had held the Padres to two hits and no runs with two out in the 5th, but he then hit Jake cronenworth and Juan Soto followed with his tenth home of the year to put San Diego up to nothing. The next inning with two out Ron marinaccio walked off the nola Fernando Tatís Jr. then blasted his 8th home run for a four zero lead. We have been in the on the borderline this last series and Stein on series like this with a W, I feel like it's really huge for us. The Padres added one more run with two out in the 9th. Joe musgrove gave up one run in 6 and a third innings for the win. Tom, New York.

"A future injury by being sufficiently built up, but not so much that you are engaging in injury in the early going. Right. And of course, if that rationale. Hey, maybe we don't need so many games, maybe there are other ways to do drills and practices that's sort of a rationale that has been brought up as a reason to remove minor league teams and downsize the miners and I don't think that's a great thing for the sport as a whole. So even if it's a case of this is more efficient or there are ways that we could replicate this without playing games, it's also good to play games even though spring training games can be a bit dull after the initial thrill of it wears off, maybe more interesting this year than usual, what with all the rules changes, but still, if you're in the area, you want to go see those games. It's good to have baseball games available. In order to ensure the health of the sport of baseball, it is good to play baseball games and have baseball teams playing them. Yeah, and the local economy here in Arizona and benefits for it. Build more stadiums for owners way. Just like chill. I'll take bad traffic in the valley if servers here can get tips. That's fine. Yes. And if players can make at least minimum wage, that'd be nice too. So wouldn't it? I wanted to say just prompted by that kenta maeda pitch tipping pitch come incident. That brings to mind something else that's happening to this spring, which is that pitchers in some cases are calling their own pitches, which is a possibility we discussed back on episode 1725 that was a lot of episodes ago, but that was before this specific implementation of the device was permitted. And now it's being tested the spring with an eye toward potentially approving it for regular season play, and it's really interesting, I think, and we've seen a lot of pictures doing it. Corbin burns and Shohei Ohtani and Alex Cobb and Joe musgrove before he broke his toe and Luis severino and Max Scherzer, who has previously said he doesn't think pitch should be legal, although he acknowledges that it helps. And severino called calling his own pitches the greatest thing of all time. So it seems to be getting rave reviews from the pitchers who have tried it and it seems like we will start to see this and I have mixed feelings, I think, about this happening on a widespread basis. Of course, there's always been some calling of pitches by pitchers and stories about Greg Maddux doing it and Zach cranky doing it. It's not even a story. It's not like apocryphal. You can see that cranky doing it. And footage in past games. But obviously it was tough to do that. Really? When the hitters could see exactly what you were doing and hear what you were saying and pitch come, not supposed to work like that unless Tony Walters has the volume too high. What do you think the implications of this will be or would you want to do it if you were a pitcher? What are the drawbacks and possible advantages here? I mean, I suppose that if it is properly communicated, you continue to avoid getting crossed up, right? Like that would be, you want to, it's always good for the catcher and the pitcher to be on the same page because if they're not bent they get crossed up. And then all kinds of nonsense can happen. So there's that piece of it. If there is any change in how you are feeling as a pitcher, like the midst of a start and you don't want to use a mountain of it, you can address that. Like if you get up there and you're like, oh, my feel for my sliders and what I thought it was, then you know that you're calling your own pitches, but like catchers notice things like famously. They're like no toers, you know? Yeah. And you can just tell your catcher like, hey, got up here. It doesn't feel right. Don't want to throw that one as much. I feel like it should be a collaborative project, right? I think that I see there being benefit in a picture being able to impart to his catcher like, hey, here's how I'm feeling stuff up here, and then they catch her being able to be like, here's how I see it playing. I don't feel like too much better than one in that scenario. It doesn't have to be a binary, right? It's a classic process. And I do wonder which part of the battery would have a better evaluation of the pitcher's stuff that day, right? Because the picture is the one throwing the pitches and knows how that feels coming out of the hands. But the catcher is maybe a little less biased about it. Less motivated, reasoning, going on there and less irrational exuberance, right? So you're right, maybe having both seems like better than having either one. And they still have that. It's not, again, it's not like all of the pitches have to be called by the catcher or by the pitcher. It can still be collaborative and the pitcher can just call some pitches. That's happened in the spring. It's just some pitchers will have used it sparingly during certain outings. So it doesn't have to be a 100% either way. And I mean, it feels like sort of an inversion of what the natural order of things has been, but I'm pro pitch come in general. I think has worked great. And I see some of the advantages, which, first of all, there's the pitch clock, right? So that's added time pressure. If you're worried about having to shake off calls and let's say you're down to your last few seconds and you don't have the time to spare and risk a shake off or have to commit to throwing a pitch you don't really want to throw, then the pitcher can do it. And I don't know exactly how the pitcher and the catcher will navigate that like figuring out I'm going to call this one. The pitcher overruled the catcher or the catcher will just see that the pitcher is doing it, right? But there's just less time to spare in general. So if you're down to the wire and the clock is ticking, then the pitcher can just set it and it doesn't have to be a back and forth. So I think it makes more sense with the pitch clock than it would without. I do think catchers can pick up on some things, pictures can't, not just about the stuff, but maybe they're paying closer attention to the hitters. They're seeing how a hitter reacted to something. They're seeing how they're standing in the box, how they're set up, right? That sort of thing that might be harder to pick up from the mound. And I guess it depends also who's been studying the hitters and prepping for this start. Now, on the one hand, catchers have it hard now because they have to handle so many different pitchers. On a staff at any given time or over the course of the season or in a single game, right? So if they have to not only know each pitcher stuff and then game plan for those pictures, that's a large cognitive load, I suppose in those catchers. And so if the pitchers were doing the bulk of that, maybe that would be a load off the catcher's mind. I don't want to further erode catcher responsibilities because we love catchers. We're already, we've already taken so much from them then. Yeah. We're about to take so much more. Potentially, right? I guess you could say preventing the running game might take on added importance for catchers and back picks being a part of the strategy now, but if we have robo ups or even a challenge system, you know, that's been the concern if we go to full robo ups, then it won't really matter how you receive pitches anymore. And that would be a big difference.

"And people might wonder, well, why are they going to this trouble now that minor league pay is going to be collectively bargained, which is true, but as Evan lays out in his piece, this may still give MLB greater leverage in those CPA negotiations if there are exemptions to the federal minimum wage laws. That might be a reason for them to do it, although MLB insists that that has nothing to do with it and they have other motivations here, but anyway, just wanted to note that this was not the only connection between MLB and the commissioner and owners and Florida lawmakers was not solely book related, but also minor league pay related. I can't decide what scenario I think is worse here. Like, did they think that they're going to be able to do stuff like this and then not have anyone know about it or did they know that people will know and they just don't care 'cause like the optics of it are bad. Like what they're asking for seems obviously bad to ask for an exemption to minimum wage laws. There's been a ton of backlash to their efforts to curb the pay of minor leaguers at the federal level. People don't successful. Right. Right. Other than a lawsuit that went against them recently. Right, but people have been, I think, appropriately critical of those efforts because it just strikes people, particularly when you're dealing with guys at that level who aren't, you know, they're not going to be making big, big money, potentially ever and certainly not for a long time. The best that you can hope for is that they got a reasonable signing bonus and have the cushion that that affords them, but that piece of it looks bad. And then the donation piece of it looks bad. It just is, it feels like quid pro quo and we can look at campaign donations. You can go look those up right now. If you want to go see what your favorite team's owner has done in the last couple of election cycles, it's all that feces website. It's easy enough to find that stuff. So I don't know which scenario I find more disconcerting that they think that they will successfully sort of obfuscate those efforts and keep them from the public eye or that they know they'll come out and they're like, whatever, it doesn't matter. We're just going to do what we're going to do because it might end up making us more money. I think they're both the key Ben. I don't particularly care for them. Yeah. I would probably go with the latter. I would guess that that is more likely. And then the only other actual on field observations here. First of all, it's been a brutal week when it comes to injuries. Yeah, man. We will be doing the Dodgers preview next time. We will, I'm sure, be talking about Gavin Lux, which is just a devastating injury for him and for the team, but Lux and glass now and Joe musgrove and Brendan Rodgers. It's just like, can we just please? Stop. Please. I mean, it's not new. This happens to some extent every spring, but it is always just as upsetting when it's just to get to opening day. And then if guys get hurt, well, at least it was a worthy sacrifice because the game's counted. I know they have to get ready for games that count and it is inevitable that they're going to get hurt sometimes during that process, but it just sucks. It sucks when your season is derailed or ended before it officially begins and with Lux, it's just one of those weird things where he landed adley just on a fairly routine play. I mean, it wasn't so routine. It's just like, you know, you plant your foot in the wrong way and there goes a crucial season in your career before it even gets going. It's just, it's the worst. Yeah, it really stinks. They're all bad. I don't want to downplay the impact that any of them will have either on the player or their team, but with Lux in particular, you just feel so bad for the guy. His first year in the big leagues was 2020 and it was weird and he didn't play the way he wanted to and, you know, he's been sort of moved around off his natural position and the bloom was sort of off the rose and then he looked like he was really starting to turn things around at points last year and we got the, you know, the hope springs eternal reports of increased bat speed after going on a driveline and all of that stuff. And so you thought, here's the chance. We're going to maybe we're going to see the guy who we have like a 60 future value on at one point and then to just non contact injuries are the worst because he's just. This is not supported by medical science. What I'm about to say. I don't mean that I'm going to try to sell you Ivermectin or anything, but I don't know that this is like an actual thing in terms of the ability of players to recover or what their long-term prognosis is in terms of how likely they are to be re injured. But whenever a guy, whether it's baseball or football or anything, goes down with a non contact injury, I always just feel more protective of him and more nervous for him when he comes back, right? Because when the force of your own body is enough to damage you, it just feels like you're vulnerable and I don't know that that is remotely correct, but that is my sort of experience of watching those guys where I'm like, are you okay? Are you okay? What about now? Are you still okay? Are you okay? Because it feels like they could just come apart at any moment. And so there was that view down sort of the over third base down to second where you saw like the it buckle and you know what? I'd say to people if you haven't seen it, don't watch it, you know? It's yucky. It feels gross. It's not like dak Prescott, but it kind of makes you get like that's not supposed to have been that way. So it's just sucks. It's super sucks. It does. On a later note, I did enjoy the umpire lists inning. Yeah. You see that? I see it, but I don't know if I've bragged about this enough to you, but you know who I got to watch pitch this week in person. So I was on my way home from oh Tony. Yeah. So it's a good reason to miss it. But I heard about it. Yeah, it was the Orioles and the pirates, right? And they just decided to play an unnecessary bottom of the 9th, even though Pittsburgh, the home team, was leading, and the empires had departed and they just played on as we've discussed in the past in the early days of Major League Baseball. They used to play unnecessary bottoms of the 9th sometimes until they decided to oh, we don't actually need to do this. But in spring training, weird wacky stuff happens and we get ties and we get in and early and then we get a necessary bottom of the 9th that because the empire said peaced out, we're just passing strikes call by the Orioles catcher was named maverick handley. Amazing. Maverick handled. No notes. Perfect. No. And he did a good job, apparently. He was pulling double duty here, catcher slash home plate ump, and seemed like he was calling pitches pretty accurately and people weren't too upset with him. Granted the stakes were not super high, given that the spring training and the game was already decided. So it was essentially a scrimmage at that point, but he pronounced himself a 100% accurate on his ball and strike calls. Are you contemplating his scherzo? Does he displace who's on fire at the perfect game? Oh.

Like 70, I think $72 to a $180 in three days, three or four days. So he's definitely improved his prospects for the auction and next season, making these deals. And it certainly seems like based on what he said to you in the chat just now. That he's got more to sell, which he certainly does. Any thoughts or any sort of surprise on rob zen, like he is three big pitch or he has four big pictures that were on his roster like last season, he had Joe mosgrove, his Aaron nola, Luis Castillo, and he also had the least severino Nolan being the most expensive and I think most people would probably opt for the grand option ahead of even though Noel is probably safer in almost as almost as good or like the 50th percentile outcome is probably about the same. And then Castillo is like $21 and submarine is 18. Which of those guys would you have preferred to have paid for? Or would you just pay for musgrove? I think musgrove must prove. I think, you know, there's a lot of different ways to look at it. I'm not a de Grom guy at the moment. I mean, the math doesn't really work on my roster. I think somebody who and neither does for that matter. So. Most of them, just a bit of fan must grow for a while, a and like them, you know, he's never really showed his seasons has just gotten progressively better. There's obviously the risk with the Grom 34 years old. So if you're asking who I'd like the most might be a different question, who I think made the most sense on my roster probably would have been much more than Nolan or de Grom. Yeah, I mean, yeah, I guess the other two I would have been asking for would have been Luis Castillo or Louis severino. I wouldn't push this up. I mean, I remember when he got him, you know, for a buck or something super cheap and different story, but I just I'll let someone else I wouldn't have overpaid for him. I happily take him on my roster for 18 bucks. He's able to Luis Castillo. I think he had such an awful start last year. I wouldn't overpay for him either, but I love to have my roster for 21 bucks too. The musgraves, yeah, I'm a must grow fan. I think the price is right. I don't think it was an overpayment. I think, yeah, like you said, it was the market. Good trade for both sides. If you look at a together just because again, I assume that a coon you would have been tossed back, right? So really Matt paid 29 bucks for musgrove Corona worth and Hanukkah yeah, he basically had Andrew pay for the deal. Right. So here the hell that off season so far is basically what's it been three days? Three days into the off season. He's a tough mudder list. Yeah, I think. Yeah, not had a really good day in terms of acquiring and selling. I think the weird part for Matt is when you look at Matt's roster, he has so many good players that are super cheap. Like I can almost fill out this entire column. I might have to increase the size of this thing just because he has so many cheap players that he can keep and I think this deal makes it a little bit more challenging to keep everyone. So he's going to have to sell some pretty quality players in my opinion. I'm just filling this out right now, so we got Joe musgrove now. That's going to add another 14. He's got he's got Lance mccullers. He's got Justin Verlander. He's got Michael Harris. He's got missing a big one. I don't think he keeps walking around. I think Michael gets tossed back. I would not keep walker Bueller for whatever he's priced at. What's the status going into the season? Do you know? He's off for the entire year. Oh, that's right. Okay, I couldn't remember what I couldn't remember exactly what you drew. So never mind, you get started there. He's probably going to keep Romano for four bucks. He could keep Joe Ryan. He could keep. He could bring singer, like, and this is just one variation of this. You could put in like 5 other names, but he's God, yeah, 14 guys for 89 bucks on here. Yeah, better all super cheap. Everyone is like Joe musgrove is the most expensive player on Matt's team right now. It's a Scott Vanderbilt team. It very much is. So I'm guessing some of these guys get moved. And maybe he goes and adds, I don't know. You get out of a big time picture he could add a big time hitter, perhaps like cheaper. But you get so Perez. He can go get Sal Perez. But he's got adley rushman. So which was always my issue. So stop them before you go. And certainly didn't. But yeah, I mean, we can go on AD nauseum over the Salvador Perez terrain, but and like I said last year, I would gladly cut Saul Paz. But Matt forced my hand and I'm very happy to have a very cheap Dalton var show for $4. Cool. So I think we've went through each of the trades that have went down over the past couple of days. I did kind of want to touch on just real quick. Maybe some guys that we haven't talked about much like it's pretty much been the same, we've talked about will. We've talked a little about me. Obviously you've talked about Andrew and Johnny quite a bit. We've talked about rob, but like maybe someone like Tim, I've been discussing trades with people in terms of someone that I've spoken with, I think he was also someone that was trying to make a big time deal tonight and fell a little short, but he has kind of a sneaky like a sneaky good roster with Darvish mcclanahan, he has Christian homme. He picked up Bobby witt. He's got a cheap all hundred Kirk in the catcher spot. He's got an intriguing Aaron ashby. You know, there's a lot of options that he can go for. But I think he needs to, but this is the thing. I think he needs to still add another player to, but I don't know how he does that with where he's at money wise. He only has a $184. And this is kind of the problem with what you were talking about a little while ago with Gary Cole was. Like Gary Cole should have ended up in Tim's hands. He shouldn't have been to Johnny. It should have been ten. And Tim should have won it in the off season with $84 and paid a 104 coal, but he decided Tim decided that he could

They moved out to a three nothing lead on the Orioles, but the O's came back and won it. Final score 6 three. How about this stat New York one of 14 with runners in scoring position? That's all you have to know Matt Carpenter and Aaron judge had good nights offensively Garrett Cole takes the loss to fall to 9 and three and the Yankees have now lost 8 of their last 12. They'll wrap it up in Baltimore today, dean Kramer against Nestor Cortez first pitch is at one 35. Things not much better for the mets. They were home against the Padres. They had even less offense than the Yankees did. How about a two run Homer by Manny Machado in the 6th inning and that was all the Padres would need. Mets got one run in the 9th, but could not come back and tie the game final score two to one and the mets lead in the national league east is shrinking considerably. Back on June 1st, it was ten and a half games. Now it's just a half game on the Atlanta Braves, so they'll try and turn things around the wrap up in this series is tonight at 7. "Brad's secret. Now this Bloomberg sports update, not a great night for the Yankees or the mets last night. Yankees were in Baltimore, continuing their weekend set with the Orioles. Things started great for Garrett Cole. He was pitching well Aaron judge and Matt Carpenter hitting well, judge with a couple of RBIs and four hits on the night Carpenter with a solo home run. That pushed New York out to a three zero lead, but that's where the good times ended. The Orioles would run off 6 unanswered runs and Garrett Cole would take the loss in a 6 three final Garrett's record on the season falls to 9 and three, and the Yankees. They've now lost 8 of their last 12. They'll try to win the series ender today with dean cremer against Nestor Cortez at one 35. Not much better for the match.
