"And then two understand how good he was because I think we saw how talented he was and how good of a player he could be even more than he did when we first got here. So it was great to see him actually step in and realize that potential because it was not being realized for no other reason than he just hadn't done it yet. And we saw it and we were like, if this guy starts to flip the switch, he's going to be one of the best in the country. And it was so great to see him. Make that change to who he just as he was as a player, but actually understanding as a man, like I can run this team. This is my team and I'm running it now. And that's why you saw that switch happen on the field where he was, if not the best, one of the top players in all of the country across every position. Coach, let's go back to last week. It hasn't even been a week yet since the orange bowl and the significance because many wondered after the end. I mean, we saw we saw Joe Milton against Vanderbilt, but there were still some the doubters. You know how it works. What do you think he showed in that game against Clemson that will maybe come at least the peanut gallery down? Yeah, I think the main thing that one of my biggest takes away from that game was the moment wasn't too big for him. He didn't try to do too much and try to go play outside the game plan and now I'm going to try to take this and show why I should be he played within the plan. He did it at a really high level. He moved really well in the pocket and then we hit a couple spots in the middle of the ball game where we had a lull. We had a couple three announce. He didn't try to now go do some things superhuman and put the ball in danger. He played within himself and then he's got that big arm that when the opportunity presented himself he pushed the ball down the field with great accuracy and hit a couple of big plays that broke it open there in the second half. Coach before you go, I realize you're probably you may not even be aware there's a game Monday night, but you since you have seen Georgia and obviously I think we're all familiar with max Doug and yet just your thoughts on what stetson Bennett has accomplished. You saw him on the other side of the field in Athens this year and really what that says to other quarterbacks, maybe who don't have the 5 stars by their name, but ultimately can compete as well. Yeah, no, I've been impressed with him the last two years watching him. He does a great job extending plays, both within the pocket and getting himself outside the pocket making off schedule type throws. To me, that's his biggest attribute that in his accuracy. And yeah, to your point, you know, everyone gets caught up in the recruiting battles and all that. And absolutely, they matter. You can see that play out every Saturday, but if you can play, you can play. And if you're a big time player, you can play at any level. So he's just a show to people just to keep, you know, keep fighting, keep scratching, keep clawing and when you get your opportunity, make sure you're prepared to go make the best of that opportunity, which is exactly what he's done for the Georgia. Well, coach, congratulations again. I know this is a special day for you and your family, one that I think a lot of people saw coming and I think people already see bigger things down the road, but we'll put a pause on that at least had you coach a few games. As offensive coordinator first, congratulations. Yes, sir. I appreciate that. Thank you. Well, what are bright, bright coach? We were talking to their Joey Halsey, the new offensive coordinator, barely looks old enough to have a driver's license, but he's the offensive coordinator at Tennessee. We'll take a short break. We're coming right back. You were listening to the Paul finebaum show podcast. What if I told you in Iran? Women are banned from going to soccer games. For 43 years, Iranian women have fought back. Troops, this is their story. The joy was forbidden. What is the meaning of that? That is how they control you. I'm shimo yai. Listen to the new 30 for 30 podcast pink card available now. The right time. With bomani Jones. The Jets have a quarterback problem. Right from like for real legitimate contention. They are a quarterback away. They have taken two quarterbacks. In the top three of the last 5 drafts and their still a quarter back away. What are you supposed to do? The right time with bomani Jones. You can listen or follow on the ESPN app or wherever you listen to podcasts. And what a show we've had. We've already had the governor of Georgia on. We just got through talking to the new offensive coordinator at Tennessee, Larry is up next in Georgia. Hello, Larry. This is our election. Todd is up next in Alabama, hello Todd. All right, bob, what's going on, Dave, brother? Hey there. How are you? I'm blessed, man. Let me ask you something. Why is it all right? I've seen legend do it, Jim. LA to attack you. And it's okay for them to get on the year, but why can't you get on the bill? Well, I don't know the answer to that, but I do think I do know what you're talking about. Well, they do it for the record, but anyway, this almost like during this. Let me answer it this way. I mean, this is my job. They are, they are, they are unpaid participants in this process. So maybe there's a different standard. I'll tell you this, as long as college football is played, we gonna all eat croak, and you know, I pick 13. I figured we would lose the case state, but we played the best game we played all year. Oh, no doubt. And yeah, if I even had a blade like that, but here we might be in the championship too, but that's neither here nor there. But like if it goes to the worst team, I'm reading the worst game that I've ever seen him coach. But I want to tell you this, Paul. By the way, which of the final three games of the season are you talking about? They all look pretty bad. I said that case state would beat us and they showed their coach choked at halftime when he saving was ready to run that clock out. We were in the final two minutes of the first half. It always happens. Yes. And also Paul now, this has been the worst year for calls and referees, but it's what it is. I mean, we got to abide by it and we just move on. But I take this, Georgia, better get ready. And this they're not looking at. Next year, auburn will be better. And so you auburn's been down four 5 years now. So that takes a certain part of attrition out of Alabama and Georgia also. So when Oliver gets that ball going, it's going to make it tough for both of us. Will you agree to that? Yeah, I mean, I agree. I mean, auburn has been down. I think they'll be back, rebuilding, but they still have although the game, the Alabama game is an auburn next year. That's something you have to always consider. Thanks for the call. Charlie is up next. Hello, Charlie. Hey, Paul, how you doing? Very well. Thank you. I'll talk to you a few years back. "Is that how this would work? So I think that now that there's a growing faction that's like the PAC 12 championship shouldn't matter because if those three teams don't have to play a championship game, why should we hold USC accountable to the result of their championship game as well? So it's fascinating dilemma, but the way I would have it right now, that SC at four obviously. Oh, I'll state at 5, they have one loss, Bama at 6. I think their loss, they're two losses. I know that we just talked about margin. There are two losses to me are difficult for me to compare to the two losses that I saw from Tennessee. I know Tennessee beat Alabama. I get that. I don't have LSU in the conversation. They also beat Alabama. LSU's nowhere near this discussion. So it's not always about the head to head. I think when you're comparing all these other teams, I think Tennessee, the loss at South Carolina, giving up the amount of points that they did, and I think just the way the defense had time struggled this year was a little bit difficult for me to overcome and I don't know if they were in position to maybe make the playoff. I don't know if they would be as competitive with Joe Milton as the starting quarterback as they would be with hinden hooker. That's about playoff conversation, not about bowl assignment. Bowl assignment, I still think they should be rewarded with a sugar bowl birth, but I'm not sure that they would be a team I would consider at this point, given how they're playing as a college football playoff team. Greg McIlroy was from fascinating stuff as we get closer to the reveal. Greg, many, many thanks. We will talk to you soon. We'll take a short break here, more of your phone calls right after this. "Conditions and availability, Allstate vehicle and property insurance company and affiliates north for Illinois. You are listening to the Paul finebaum show podcast. We're back in our gridiron gas brought to you by John Seville. Jordan Rodgers. Joining us here, Jordan. Thank you. Let me go back to last night. All right. Because there are still a lot of folks in the Magnolia state shaking their head about almost everything that happened. You've been high on Will Rogers and Mississippi all year long. They've been underachieving at times. What did you make out of the last night? Well, I think the defense showed up the way that we thought they could. They were disruptive the entire night. I think the issue, the ups and downs of Mississippi said on offense this year, when I really look at it last year, Makai Polk was a thousand yard receiver. He was the go to guy, big situations, big third downs in the red zone. That's where Will Rogers win. This year, they don't really have that guy and they got 5 guys that are all within a few different receptions of each other. They balanced spreading the football really easily, but at times you need a go to guy. Jaden Wally made some big plays last night as well. Look, I think Will Rogers is special. I think we kind of slept on how good Mississippi Mississippi could be this year. And again, leech is going to win one or two that's going to make you raise your eyebrows and it's really been the consistency that lacked and I think it's because not really having a number one true number one for Mississippi up when they needed to and look that was a team that just wanted it more. I think right now ol miss was reeling from the last couple of weeks and at times Mississippi looked like they wanted a lot more and they showed it. Fans want to blame a lot of people, including the media on distracting lane kiffin and all this. I mean, they lost what four of the last 5 games a and M in that stretch. What did you see as they disintegrated? I don't know if I see it just like that. From a player standpoint, that absolutely can happen. I mean, there's a lot of outside noise. When you're 18, 19, 20 year old college kid, you're dealing with school, you're dealing with a girlfriend, you're dealing with family. I mean, there's a lot that you're dealing with as it is. So a shake up within the facility can absolutely distract, but when I really go back to really the Arkansas game as well, hit over 700 yards offense. It's not like they just didn't show up. Like there was some bad penalties that I think should have gone their way that didn't early in that game. One of them resulted in a touchdown back the turnovers early. That game wasn't I didn't think they showed up. They got some bad breaks early and Arkansas showed up to play in last night as well. They fought in that game. They did, so I don't see a team that like rolled over and completely gave up or was completely distracted. Obviously that's a part of it. But I just think a couple breaks the last two games didn't go their way, a team that I think is still incredibly talented and that close to when in ten or 11 it's just those plays didn't go their way. We haven't talked to you since last Saturday night in Columbia. Everybody is still in shock. We'll talk about the games tomorrow, but Tennessee now without hindon hooker. I think you saw Milton in his first game two years ago and what is going on in that program today? Yeah, it's going to be interesting. We're doing the vandy Tennessee game as well. The more I dive into Joe Milton. I mean, he's a just a freak of an athlete. I mean, there's not a dude that's more physically gifted in the country. I don't believe that he is. The issue is that last year his deep ball was all over the place. It was like me teeing up a ball and a par 5. I'm trying to hit it as far as I can and one time ago straight. Most of the time, it's you don't know where it's going. This year is one of the best deball throws in the entire country. It's complete 90% of his throws, 25 plus downfield, hundred QBR last year that was 20% and a four QBR. So that's not going to be an issue. The issue for Tennessee because vanity is going to come to play. The issue is that hinden was so good from 5 yards to 20 yards. And why that's important. Everybody looks at Tennessee and like me and the explosive plays, that's what does it know. It's the 5 yards. It's the ten yards that allows them to stay on tempo. It's those completions, the RPOs that allow them to set up the big plays. Milton's accuracy from 5 to 20 is not great. That's where I think if you're watching this game as a fan, watch those throws. The RPOs that he pulls, the accuracy to the slant routes, the in breaking routes. If he can complete those, that sets up the temple that sets up the shot plays, and they're gonna be fine. If he struggles there, vandy's gonna come to play Vinny's got a lot to play for in this game. They have a lot of confidence. So he's talented enough to take this team and have him not miss a beat as surprising as that is to say because hennan was that good, but also there's a few question marks that I think we're still understanding where his development is. Vandy has been better all year long, but a lot of people just woke up to it. What are they doing? Defensively, when you flip on and we were talking to Clark Lee about it this week in their deep corner, Nick Hal as well. There is a speed and an urgency to which they swarm the football and it's not as sexy thing to talk about and every coach says, man, I want my team to run after and make tackles and most of the time, it's just, it's kind of coach speak. When you flip on the film, this team plays hard. And I think on offense, AJ swan was developing that pass game and then Mike right up, he made big plays when he needed to, but to me, it's the effort and it's the energy on defense that I think is really opened up. These wins from against Kentucky and Florida, the defense came to play. So they're going to be tested because in order to stop Tennessee, the teams that have stopped or slowed down their offense, they've been physical on the outside and press coverage. That's not vandy. Vandy is not going to do that. They're going to play zone covers. They want to keep everything in front of them. We'll see how much they can do that, but I think it starts with the really the leadership of Clark Lee, but the energy and enthusiasm they're playing with on defense. I know that's not cool to point out, but that's what it is when you flip on the tape. With Jordan Rogers, let's get to Tuscaloosa where we are right now and talk about the iron

"And you know the college football season or any season could be basketball. It could be baseball. Any season has arrived when our next guest is Tom Hart. That means summer's over and we're back to normal programming here. Tom hard, joining us from Knoxville, which is hours away from the call. I think it's your first college game of the year, maybe you did one somewhere else. Good afternoon, Tom. Hey, Paul. Great to be with you. Yeah, first game. And we got a double header this weekend, our group in Alabama Saturday night, so why not ring in the new year with as many games as we can fit in in a weekend. It's always a great time of year and I know Tennessee fans are really pumped up and sitting next to us pumped up. It's a good place to start. Yeah, I mean, normally, you know, the question is about the game, but I'm more curious before we get to the game about what are you sensing him? You've been a Knoxville for a day or two. This is a fan base. Forget coming back slowly. I mean, they feel like they are well on their way. Tell us what you're sensing. Well, it's sitting that you just played that clip of Elle talking about her newfound arrogance with Georgia fans and Bama fans long-standing arrogance and expectations. Tennessee fans have expectations too. They just haven't won a national title since T Martin was at quarterback and it's been a while since they made it back to Atlanta. The confidence that they have, I think, primarily comes from what this offense can do under Josh hypo, right? And they got hand in hooker back who wasn't the starter at this point last year. We're here for the Bowling Green game to start the season and Joe Milton was the guy that they had. And they thought that Joe Milton from a talent standpoint with the best guy quarterback, they didn't realize Josh hyper was telling us yesterday how much of a gamer hand in hooker is with apologies for using that very trite word, but there's a difference between guys who get in the game and know how to perform and rise up to the expectations. So based on what the offense did and the talent that they have, there's a lot of really confident balls fans around here and the place is going to be pretty much packed tonight and they love their team. There's no doubt. And listen, that's why we're about to sit down and listen to you and your team do the game. But there just seems to be outraged from some of them that they're not in the top 25 and they're not this and they're not that. And they went 7 and 6, although I watch your broadcast of the bowl game, I'm still counting it as a win. I know you left the air saying the Tennessee laws and I'm still upset about that. It was an ACC officiating crew, but we're not going to throw stones. I think they have a right to be confident and they have a listen, this fan base, and I used to live here. I lived here for 5 years when I was calling minor league baseball. I still probably people money in town. The bartender at Todd is still waiting for me to come by and pay off the tab from about ten years ago and that's fine. I get it. I'll make it there sometime. But the fact is they think that they belong in the upper tier. And their history would suggest that they do belong in the upper tier. There are recent history, you know, since lane kiffin came in and then left town with mattresses burning is drastically different. So where does that confidence come from? Josh hypo came in and rebuilt the program in one year. And turn this thing around. And this was after they had lost 30 ish, 35 players to the transfer portal and not just, I just walk ons or guys were hurt. Guys that they wanted to leave the program starting linebackers. Henry Thomas, offensive lineman running banks. So what he was able to do last year, I think, gave this fan base this renewed sense of confidence. You know, we are here for the old miss game. And the way that they forget about the mustard bottle in the vape pens in the golf balls and everything that ended up on the field. The way they welcomed Lake Evans when he walked down the field before the game, that was to me a great example of the confidence that this fan base has, hey, we belong and they jump out to the pump out their chest and they say, we should be in the same conversation as all these other great SEC teams. To do that, they're defects has got to be better. Josh hippos defenses over the years because the offense is at so much that they can afford to be not elite, but they've got to be better in the red zone. They've got to be better on third down. And when we talk to the coaching staff yesterday, they said the key to that is to get more pressure from their front four without having to bring pressure from others. So that's something we'll be watching tonight in this game against ball state. You talked about a minute ago, but I want to spend another minute or two before you go on hand and hooker and Josh and what he brings and how dynamic this offense is, is you're calling the game, it moves quickly. Not that you aren't prepared for anything, but what are you learning that you thought you knew or maybe you didn't know about hooker and hypo especially just the way he calls a game? Well, there's a learning curve anytime a new coach comes in, but there's also, I think, a steeper learning curve when you come in and you change everything, drastically on one side of the ball. Really, on either side of the ball. But, you know, hey, Georgia Tech is a great example. They went away from running the flex option under Paul Johnson, they bring in Jeff Collins. They still can't figure out their personnel situation and get the recruiting right. Josh hypo comes in. He brings in a couple of new quarterbacks. He brings in this help tempo system. And they had to, you know, it took him a game and a half to get their footing to kind of figure things out, but they got there. And one of the things hypo brought up yesterday that I hadn't really considered, you look at henan hooker's history at Virginia tech, he played in a lot of games, and he was out there for big games. But he was also based. It then started again, and then benched, and then started again. And anytime you yo yo, a player like that, even in the NFL. You know a quarterback like that, that obviously impacts their confidence. And that was something that this staff was aware of. And they knew what he'd been through and they wanted to pump him up and put them in the right place and put them in the right position. And lo and behold, he was able to get him there. By the way, we should forget about Joe Milton. I mean, we have practiced yesterday. This guy's got one of the best arms I've ever seen in person. And he's a physical specimen. And he's great friends with hooker. And they're going, there's going to be a time this season where they need Milton in a game. So, you know, Cole laughed at me when he asked him what I was looking forward to in this game. And I said, I want to see Joe Milton. And that's true, because I think we'll get a chance to see him. Maybe in the first half. And I want to see what he can do within the scope of this offense. It can be reliable and dependable and make the right decisions. And can he be somebody he's not going to take the starting job from his roommate heaven hooker. But can he be somebody that they can lean on if hooker misses any time whatsoever? Final question is the most important when have you ever cared where Cole cubicle thought about anything? You know, Cole has a very important role on our team. He's the one that drives us home from dinner. Tom hard. A couple hours away from Tennessee in Knoxville. Thanks Tom. We'll see you

"And lane kiffin joining us shortly right now Katie George joining us of course on the call for the Tennessee Alabama. Katie, great to talk to you again. So I think I've asked you a few times this year about quarterback situations. We all want to know about hooker. What's his status? Well, your guess is as good as mine at this point. We haven't had our conversations with Tennessee's coaches and Josh hypo yet they're arriving in Tuscaloosa around 6 p.m. Eastern Time. So then we're hoping that he'll hedge a little bit and give the broadcast crew an idea as to where hindon is at if he was, in fact, able to go through practice this week, you know, obviously we saw Joe Milton at the end of the old miss game, but, you know, we just wrapped up our meetings with Nick Saban and Alabama's coordinators. And echoed the same sentiment we just heard from his Monday press or that, you know, they're both similar and what they are capable of doing. They're both big physical runners. So you have to watch there. Obviously, Tennessee runs the football really well. I'm in both have strong arms that can beat you downfield. So doesn't necessarily change the way that Alabama is coming into this game from a defensive standpoint, but certainly changes. I think what we'll see from Tennessee. So I'll be very curious to see what John hypo has to say here in a couple hours. Katie, on the Alabama front, give us a sense of what you learn from those coaches. I know it may not be a whole lot different than what Sabin said earlier, but it's almost as if he was trying to sell this game to the fan base in terms of how good Tennessee is. What a great job. Hypo has done all those things are accurate. But they're still quite a spread. At least in terms of the public perception in Vegas's perception between these two schools. Yeah, there is. And I actually had a chance to join him on his radio show last night at a local restaurant here in Tuscaloosa where he was saying to the fans, look, it's homecoming. We haven't been home in a really long time, right? It feels like a long time after going to College Station and start fill. So he said, you know, we want to warm welcome from our fan base and then we have a biweek next week. So this is your chance, you know, to come and create an unbelievable atmosphere for us. And you know, actually have an impact in the game on that fast tempo offense at Tennessee likes to run, but you know, practice yesterday, he kind of wrapped it up with a message to his group of look, you know, your identity is not created in one game. You played a complete performance against Mississippi state a week ago, but can you do it again? Can you put together back to back performances? Can you be mature enough to have that consistency that we need if we want to be a special team? So that's the charge to this Alabama team is can you go out and do it again for all four quarters? Katie George joining us from Tuscaloosa Katie, thank you very, very much. We really appreciate it. We'll be watching tomorrow night. Of course..

"Welcome back. Great to have all of you with us here as the final hour has done. We have spoken to our next guest many times over the last couple of years and almost every call has been more depressing than the next. Not because I don't like our guess. It's just a subject matter has been awful. It's not that way today. John Adams, oranges from the Knoxville new Senate, John, how are things an old rocky top? Paul, I'm happy to report things are looking Tennessee is one back SEC games and scored a 107 points in the process. Jeremy Pruitt's teams couldn't score a 107 points in two games, against cardboard cutouts. So fans are really excited about first year coach Josh hypo and what he's doing with the offense. Hyper is not he's not a flashy personality, unlike the coach on the opposite side for OMS Saturday, but he's got a really flashy offense. It's doing great. He's overcome some serious obstacles. And I know he hasn't played beaten great teams, but to put up those kind of points, I think has given Tennessee fans hope for the future and a chance to realize that this offense could potentially really be dynamic. John, yeah, I mean, we realize the opponents are not great, but Kentucky played one of those opponents a couple weeks ago, and I think they scored 16 points. So it's not just beating empty tomato cans. I mean, these are SEC teams. How has he done it? Well, pretty much his advertised. I mean, when he's an offensive coordinator, Missouri, when he was a head coach at Central Florida, very prolific offenses, offenses that can be hard to deal with because of the up tempo element. I mean he and O mis, I think have the two they were in place about as fast as any teams in the country, so it's similar to line here if it's team in that respect. But this is what he's always done. And I think it can level the playing field sometimes against more talented teams. What's so impressive to me is he's done this with a kind of a patchwork offense of line. And he's done it with who started out to be as backup quarterback and in hooker and I think that was a mistake that he quickly rectified Booker didn't start the first two games, but he's clearly better than the start of Joe Milton, who opens season is number one. So he's made these adjustments. He may be adjustment in quarterback and it doesn't seem to matter what happens, all the injuries to running backs and offensive line island, he finds a way to move the ball and as you pointed out, Kentucky didn't move the ball that well against Missouri. Boston college, which has a pretty good offense, then move the ball that well against Missouri against Tennessee. And I just think it's really Tennessee hasn't had a coach in a long time. Might have to go all the way to back to Doug Dickey. And I'm really dating myself there. Most people will know Doug Dickey is. I know him as a Tennessee. But I wasn't here then, but I heard so many people tell me about what a great play caller he was and a great game manager. Well, Tennessee's one games and had great teams, but it wasn't as though you thought Tennessee was going to out coach the other guy so much. But I think with hypo, I think Tennessee fans feel confident that they can win the X's and O's battle with me be in it. I think it's a real a real boost for Tennessee fans from around. Which brings us to Saturday night before we get to the game kiffin has been there countless times as an assistant. Does this feel different that he's coming in as a head coach? Yeah, and you combine it with the other elements. I mean, Tennessee is on an ascent right now. It's getting ready to play its first SEC night game of the year. I expect one of the loudest and largest crowds Tennessee to add in quite a while, because really kiffin gets mixed reviews here. I mean, some people still blaming for leaving after one year in two 1009 and taking the Southern California job, but others have come to respect him and they know what a great job he did in that one year he was at Tennessee. One 7 games with a team that wasn't that talented. And so they're going to want to beat him in the worst way and I'm sure oh miss will be booed heartily when it takes a feel. But I think a number of Tennessee fans are receiving emails from these people who said, they would take it back as a head couch now. So there's just a lot of emotion tied into this game for Tennessee fans. Probably some for lane kiffin. I know he was here as an offensive coordinator at Alabama, but heroin much doubt how the gang was going to go when he was offensive coordinator at Alabama. There's some doubt as to how this game could go. Yeah, I mean, this game, I think before the season, you really couldn't have imagined it being this close from a line standpoint or even an expectation standpoint. Let's talk about those expectations because it seemed to me that if Tennessee figured out a way to get to a ball game, it was a good season. And by the way, it wasn't all that it wasn't like the biggest upset because you talked about it one time when you were here this summer. The schedule was not that difficult. But after losing to Pittsburgh, it seemed like it could not happen. Yeah, beating Missouri got Tennessee back on track. People forget now, particularly the way Missouri's defense is playing. Lizari was a favorite in that game. And Tennessee really really gave it a beating. I think 6 and 6 might still be the most realistic number. Tennessee is getting ready to play four nationally ranked teams in succession. Granted, there's an open data in the middle of that. But I can't see Tennessee B now Alabama Georgia or beating Kentucky and Lexington. But I could see them beating all this because it's just going to be a basketball, fast break type game. And those games can go anyway, as you know. John, considering the depths of despair that this program has been in, what has it been like there? I guess the first, I guess it's last week was at home. So this is the second, but Tennessee has played so many of these early games, which good or bad, it's still hard to create a dynamic atmosphere. Is it not oh, of course, it is Paula. It's hard to get pumped for a new kick-off, especially when you're playing Tennessee tech. So here you've just got everything you need in a week or so ago, athletic directors gaining white is trying to in light of complaints by fans at the lines for beer were too long. He's got more vendors and more stands. So I think that that could play into the noise level against all miss Saturday night. But you know how, is it every venue just about in the SEC,.

"Boosters happy as a new head coach and also potentially getting joe milton some much needed wraps if hen hooker is out this week at missouri. There is no quarterback in college football pain that throws a better ball from the twenty yard line. fifteen rows into the stands then joe milton. It doesn't matter where he's played his college ball whether it's in knoxville or ann arbor. That man throws a beautiful ball into the stands. I think most people know our feelings on joe milton when everyone believed he was cam. Newton was gonna take michigan to the promise land and before even a single snap was taken last year. I think we alerted people that that was not going to bolt very well and that is why he's at tennessee now. The man is a big physically imposing presence presence. You just lacks accuracy. He lacks touch. And if he can't run. Downhill chuck the deep ball. There aren't a whole lot of other weapons available at his disposal tennessee in interesting game in their own right this weekend against missouri game where the ball's have actually taken a touch of money from three down to two and a half in some spots. I think that means handed hookers up. You dank i mean. I can't imagine folks run into the window to try and make a case for joe. Melania win a game in hostile territory. That is for sure. "East rivals from the common allstate. Two thousand eighteen was the lone exception. When you look at kentucky though this is a team that's gone twelve and four against the number. The last sixteen games in lexington. That's coincided with coach stoops bringing in upgrade and talent both teams this year top forty in rushing yards and of course their primary vehicle for moving the football. But all the talk. This offseason pain was about kentucky bringing in a quarterback that could change the dynamic of their offense. Gone is terry wilson and a run. First mentality will let us was going. Allow them to air it out and be more dynamic moving through the air but you dig into some of those numbers not quite sure on buying into that narrative just yet you and me. Both and kentucky's foreign oh. They've covered three of four games. But i've actually downgraded the wildcats a half point from where i had them coming into the season and i know. The schematic shifts. That are this large. Take time but i thought the foundation would look a little bit different. I was kind of hyped about the new c. Liam pro style offense. You know. Pro style quarterback there's talks of more tempo right. No more like three yards and cloud of dust on offense with quarterback that can't throw or converted wide receivers under center. But what i've seen through four games is an offense. That's passing on only thirty seven percent of snaps. They're playing well below the national average in pace. And it's not like in dougie schedule's been like murderers row here monroe mizzou south carolina chattanooga all four defenses outside the top sixteen defensive efficiency. Maybe we see something from kentucky's offense that we haven't yet will let us needs to play. Well obviously had his worst game of the season against the best defense he's faced so you ask yourself. Is it a one game sample or is this the will lettuce that we're gonna see moving forward when the competition increases one. No robinson obviously has been fantastic. He's provided really the only great production at the receiver position. Four kentucky's offense. But i think the key to the side of the ball is kentucky being able to run. If you're gonna run and sixty three percent of snaps you better be damn efficient. Donut and so far. Rodriguez and smoke have done. Well down to down both have a success rate. Well over fifty one percent. They're each doing a tunnel. Work after contact both accumulated more than sixty two percent of their rushing yards after contact. But what would be nice to see is maybe a little bit more explosiveness when you only factor in f. b. s. opponents kentucky. Sixty seventh in epa per rush. Because they haven't really hit those big runs against the big schools aside from being good at something you do a lot and you know shortening this game as an outmanned underdog. Why it's important to be able to run. The ball is it helps will love us now. You don't obviously need to be able to run it like the most ridiculously efficient rates for play action work but it certainly helps. And when you look at we'll his passer rating jumps forty four points when he's throwing the play action when you get linebackers to bite you can throw behind them and in front the safety and that's an area that will love us has been really good in that intermediate area. He's been truly lights out. Hundred twenty four passer rating eighty percent just completion percentage not a single turnover worthy. Throw in that ten to nineteen yard intermediate range. We know he's not treated the ball. Overly well couple turnovers. They're not all on him. Receivers have had some drops but they need to protect the ball a little bit better but it kind of all starts and stops. I think with rodriguez and smoke. They are the engine of kentucky's offense and a lot of the passing game in. Its success is predicated on a solid ground attack if we have a game where it is all on. We'll lettuces shoulders. This likely doesn't end welfare kentucky and what is interesting. Todd is you kind of have this dynamic shift and it's why you always want the most data points even though football really isn't a sample size sport but you also want to see how teams are trending as well and i know that sounds completely opposite of each other but you do have two teams here at least from an offensive perspective that have trended drastically different in each of their last two games. This is a florida team. I think that doesn't get enough credit for a what they've been able to accomplish so far in the early season. Now one thing to keep in mind when you handicap this game aside from some of the xs knows you have to imagine kentucky comes into this game a little bit more well rested not having played back to back emotional games and what people can look at the final score against tennessee last week for the gators. Those are still sec east rivals. And it's a game or florida only took a seventeen fourteen lead into the half. Don't be fooled by that final score. Dan mullen apparently wanted to keep all of his boosters and alums happy Electing to score the go ahead touchdown to get them outside the number rather than taking needs to really salty more disappointed. That josh hypol- didn't take time out down. The stretch for tennessee bill once once once joe milton enters the game. All bets are off like tennessee. Fans out there that have to realize that what's up. I'll be honest. I flip the game on late. And so tennessee had the ball hendin hooker then got pummeled and i believe left the game with a concussion and they were within the number at that point and then i turned it off. Flip to another game. I came back to it just to see the last possession in joe milton was in the game flirted obviously gone on to score. But you're right a believe tennessee had to timeouts. There's like nineteen seconds to go and it's not just about being a new coach and making your boosters happy in getting support that way but if you have to use joe milton moving forward. Wouldn't it be nice to get him a couple meaningful red zone snaps for a guy that has not shown the ability to be accurate. Maybe get him a couple attempts in the red zone where the windows tighten. It just didn't make sense from from both directions making boosters happy as a new head coach and also potentially getting joe milton some much needed wraps if hen hooker is out this week at missouri. There is no quarterback in college football pain that throws a better ball from the twenty yard line. fifteen rows into the stands then joe milton. It doesn't matter where he's played his college ball whether it's in knoxville.

"But now with him sidelined at least they have a capable. Backup in zach zodda. I watched cows on in the spring game paul. I think he's excellent. He's a really good thrower. So i actually think him being in the lineup against a team like arkansas might actually work to texas. And m's advantage because they're gonna live right now. It's probably going to have to be through the air that offense a blind the other day not great cows did not look comfortable at all. But let's also take last week against colorado with a slight grain of salt cows. Awda was getting backup repsol week and was thrust into a difficult spot at altitude which is even increasingly difficult on the quarterback especially when trying to push the ball downfield so take an push them to the side just for a half second. Let me talk quickly. Why arkansas difficult match for an wants to live on the ground. You're not going to be able to run the ball with a lot of efficiency against arkansas. I'd be surprised if you could even with arkansas's three down defensive line. they're heavy. they're big. They're difficult to move. And they're very sure tackles at the second level now at this point i haven't heard an update as to what's going on with their outstanding linebacker grand morgan. He was walked off the field with a lot of help on saturday night. So if he's back hoping that he is and this will be one of the better fronts. Sevens in the sec. But if he's out they at least have capable depth behind him with both henry and bumper pool. But if those two guys have one of them were to go down and they might run into some issues so they're good right now along the front. It's just whether or not they can sustain injuries throughout the course of the season which are to happen in the sec. Because of how physical play so starting lineup very good. The depth is what question at this point. They're not having to rely on a lot of depth because they are excellent to eat greg. What's your quarterback situation. Look like in knoxville for josh chappel. Well watching joe. Milton's increasingly frustrating. I don't really know how to describe what it was that i saw and we've talked about it. Throughout the course of last week and leading up to the game joe. Milton had hit three d. Balls three if he hits three balls. And look. I played against patent doozy. I know exactly. What does he wants to sell out. Get those safeties involved in the run game you got to throw it over there over his head if you can do that you'll beat them convincingly if you can't do that you're gonna get beat. Jovan didn't do very well in this deep balls. And as a result they lost by touchdown. Now hinton hooker gave them. A chance was a little shaky early. But he settled down as the game went along. What i wanna see moving forward. I think the quarterback competition should be open. Assuming milton's back healthy available moving forward. I'd like to see that quarterback competition opened up because if joe milton continues to overthrow deep balls. No one's going to catch overthrowing ball not going to happen at least if you under throw it. There's a few things that could happen. One can get pass interference to your receiver could go up. Make a catch on the fifty fifty contested catch situation or three. It's potentially going to fall. Falling complete underthrown. Deep balls are so much harder the defense and they are in the offense because the defendant never looks for the football so i think that joe building if he continues to overthrow guys he's going to have to get out to many plays being left on the field right now by tennessee off. It's just not that good. They're not good enough. Excuse me they are. They can be good. They showed some signs or some glimpses at times on saturday. They're not good enough at this point to leave that he plays in the field against quality competition. So i open it up on. Hooker did a good job in relief. And we'll see where they go from this point forward because hooker by all accounts not have a great camp but sure enough with the lights on saturday. He performed admirably. Give him a chance. Greg auburn has been flawless in two games. I'll be at the opposition. Their head to penn state this weekend. What's going on with brian. hartson's team and What does it look like saturday night up there. I actually really liked auburn. Chances paul and i kind of went this season thing man. That's going to be a tall order. really i think auburn has played tremendously. But he referenced. The competition right and it wasn't the best start on saturday night. It's it is what it is but let's just acknowledge what auburn's done. They have not played to the level of the competition. And there's something to be said for that. Because i saw a while at least in the gus. Malzahn era times before auburn played to the level of the competition. That's not the case this last two weeks so they left no doubt they went out there and they executed. They didn't do a whole lot. That was extravagant. In regards to their game plan it was fairly vanilla and they executed insanely high level. Go next great in the first week. Not as good in the second week but still showing signs of growth for where he was a year ago. The running game now has more than just one piece and take big. And i do not need more than one piece tank. Big is about as excellent a running back that you'll find in college football the office of line. This shown some signs of growth even though they haven't really been challenged to this point and then on the defensive side. I've been pretty optimistic with what i've seen so far outside of the fact that i'm not really at this point convinced that they have a super dynamic pass rush but that's okay. I think they match up pretty well. This weekend. penn state along the offensive line. Not great auburn. I think can get some push can limit what they do in the run game and i think auburn in the secondary matches a decent against what are pretty explosive wide receivers. Now sean. clifford's deal on a really hot hand. It'll be a difficult game and in bo. Knicks doesn't play. Well they won't win. It's really going to hinge on whether or not bow knicks continues to play smart sound football throughout four quarters on the road where your emotions are likely going to be challenged in the white house. So i like their chances. Paul actually i think they can certainly go on the road and get a win. But they'll even have to play better than what they've played in the first two weeks in order to do that because penn state is obviously a significant jump in competition. Greg is alabama hedged gainesville Help us understand. What's going on with the quarterback position under dan mullen. The most popular player on the team is always the backup quarterback in this particular case. It's understandable backup quarterback at least so far through the first eight quarters of the season. Paul has been pretty phenomenal. I don't really know how else to describe what we've seen from him. And i think the upside that the office might have with him under center now with emory jones. I think there's been a little bit. And i can't put myself in his shoes but i would assume that he's pressing a little bit prints. I remember the first interceptions. He threw it to the left side of fau game. That's just a complete force and there's nothing that would indicate why he should go there. It was a bad decision as bad. Read but i think it was in large part due to the fact that he feels like he needs to make a play because the guy that could potentially take his spot is likely gonna make every single time. He's on the field now. Dan mullen is notoriously loyal. And i think that that's for good reason. The net should give your starting quarterback and awful lot of hope and appreciation. But i think the opportunities to win with richardson at quarterback. This weekend might actually be a little bit higher than that of maybe emory jones. Because i think it takes a super dynamic quarterback play to potentially beat the crimson tide knowing. How good this defenses for alabama knowing how dialed in. They've been at times over the last couple of weeks. The quarterbacks can have to play absolutely out of his mind this weekend and it can be done for sure. We've seen it happen before a lot. Johnny manziel another. But i think that this situation. This matchup is going to require an incredible quarterback performance..

I'm just saying that you cannot take any and it's one thing not to take a school like that seriously at the beginning of the game. But you're down to the final play. Maybe show some intensity as it looked like flag football. Yeah let me just reach out and you get within three inches guy. But they deserve to lose. And i. None of us need to watch out for you anymore. Yeah and if you peel that back a little deeper. I thought just pure effort wise. What florida state deal with. Notre dame was great k. Look good for them but if you started peeling back some of the layers of decisions that were made in that game and you really really really paid attention new questioned mike norville going for fourth down so early in that game which ended up being the difference. You questioned him doing that Review that ended up icing his own kicker who ended up missing the field goal that ended up being the difference so while there is a positive body of work to go off of you saw decisions in gaming. It's notre dame moore bell made you take pause and then all of the season sudden you see what happened. Last night i was. I was trying to the last time we team. That was such a feel good story waking up on sunday morning. And you're like you know what this is worse than we actually thought there are. There are a lot of major upsets in college football history. Where the next week. The team blows it but they usually don't blow it to jacksonville state so that another black guy for the acc. When you had an opportunity to to to make that palate taste a little better. After week one pin goes into your alma mater. Tennessean gets a win a four hour game. It was fun to watch it with no tainting to watch. I don't think there's any argument that ended. Hooker needs to be the quarterback at tennessee. Moving forward and i saw joe milton. Look joe milk to create a player. If i was going to create an athlete on a video game. I'd make him look like joe milton. He just can't connect with a wide receiver. He overthrows just about everybody. Yeah that was as you look not to spend much more time this season on tennessee but it but as you look at their schedule This was the most important game On the schedule because it was really the only way they get to being bowl eligible Because they're not going to be. Florida georgia alabama. Just go right down. The list of of of kentucky probably So so this was their mom and they let it get away in a game. They should want and honored. Johnny majors and johnny majors won national championship at pitt and he got fired at tennessee. Figure that one out for yourself. Yeah it was one of those big. It was a. It was a weeks later games. And we had to find one or two that would entertain us and that was one of them in one of those teams in the in the. Acc that keep an eye on because they've got a really good nfl quarterback and pick it. Seems like he's been there for a decade. But we're we're trying to get the point of the season. Paul through two weeks Trying to find a team here in a team there who can make things difficult for one of these ranks teams. I dunno kit it. Maybe i thought. Nc state was going to be it and then they go to starkville and just get their teeth kicked in that has to be one of the most disappointing losses on the board. Because that's a team that the acc acolytes were trying to make all of us believe was was legit and then you know they. They got run by team that that needed a field goal the previous week to be what it was that louisiana. One of louisiana's louisiana tech. I'm sorry there's so many down there So i really gave him. Mississippi state life which You know they have lsu coming in two weeks or they're they're they're they're playing but then you know nc state. You can't take them too seriously anymore. And again i genuinely feel badly for jim phillips a new commissioner of the acc to be wondering what he got himself into. When you look at. And i'm not going to get into miami. They were celebrating beating appalachian state like they had just done. Something is that grim as one of the most frustrating teams in america. I just cannot figure. Out how the state of florida if you really want to dive down this rabbit hole and i guess we will since we've already started looking at the premier programs in the state of florida miami with what they've got going on florida's state team look at the state of the state of those programs and poets. It sat with where florida state. Miami miami once again we bought into false streams with them and they just. I don't think it's a disastrous program. I think they're certainly ahead of wherever she was right now but it is a sad state and florida. Now is another story that is about to become center stage. Because the gators. Are you telling me Hosting the biggest game of the weekend such a good segue because we do get to that with florida. They got out of their game yesterday. They go. and now. It's florida alabama week. Alabama took care of mercer forty eight to fourteen barring health issues. Dan mullen has a very interesting decision to make a quarterback because based on what we saw from anthony richardson. Yesterday he came up. He was limited a little bit. After that touchdown run for the kid was three of three hundred fifty yards two touchdowns throwing four carries hundred fifteen yards and a touchdown rushing paul. It's no secret kids from gainesville. It's a good story. The offense just moves better with anthony. Richardson and now. I think dan mullen has to make a decision. Not only for this week against alabama but going forward for the rest of the series with the sec east. Yeah and everything. I'm telling you now is courtesy of tim. Tebow because of hurt him now two straight weeks in meetings talk about anthony. Richardson just think of tim. Tebow and in two thousand and six as the understudy. Chris league who helped win a national championship coming in situationally and tibo has been raving about him. But at this point you're right Does dan mullen. Make the call. And put him in this cauldron against against alabama. The one thing. I will say about alabama and i don't know the injury situation. They lost a key player last week anderson. They're all world player. Got banged up and he is questionable. That's a big deal. I mean he is. He's the best player on their defense. Which is saying something. And i i know the story in alabama has been saving going off and everyone is was complimenting..

And again i genuinely feel badly for jim phillips a new commissioner of the acc has to be wondering what he got himself into. When you look at. And i'm not going to get into miami. They were celebrating beating appalachian state like they had just done. Something is that gourmets on the most frustrating teams in america. I just cannot figure. Out how the state of florida if you really want to dive down this rabbit hole and i guess we will since we've already started looking at the premier programs in the state of florida miami with what they've got going on florida's state those two teams look at the state of the state of those programs and poets. It sat with florida state. Miami miami once again we bought into false streams with them and they just. I don't think it's a disastrous program. I think there certainly ahead of wherever she was right now but it is a sad state and florida. Now's is another story that is about to become center because the gators are you telling me Hosting the biggest game of the weekend such a good segue because we do get to that with florida. They got out of their game yesterday. They go and now. I think john mullin has to make a decision. But at this point you're right Does dan mullen make the call and put him in. This called her. And against against alabama. The one thing i will say about alabama and i don't know the injury situation. They lost key player last week anderson. They're all world player got banged up and he is questionable. That's a big deal. I mean he is. He's the best player on their defense. Which is saying something. And i i know the story in alabama has been saving going off and everyone is was complimenting..

"ESPN radio. And the ESPN APP the Johnny Majors Classic, of course in Knoxville. I didn't like what I saw out of Tennessee and weak win against Bowling Green, albeit in a very big win. Pittsburgh looked very Can you pick it? Who's collecting Social Security for Pittsburgh? Of course, he's been there for about 47 years. The quarterback. That's a really big matchup and N C state at Mississippi State. These are two games that the desperately needs. After a rough week. One they're both favored could be both very close spreads. I like both teams in these games. I just don't know what to make of the outcome. Point Spread wise. Yes, You know, it's funny, and I'm glad you mentioned Pick it. I think he's Hunter. Renfroe needs a kind of hand over the trophy for the guy who's still in college. You're just shocked when you hear his name. I think the transfer portal with the Covid situation changed everything. But no, I think it's a really interesting game for pit right. They've been sort of trending in the right direction. Pat Narduzzi, who have been very critical of his conservative field goal kicking, he has the program head in the right way. I like what Mark Whipple the OC is done as well with this offense. Very Very upperclassmen and Tennessee. Tennessee is only 10 and 20 as a home dog in the last 30 against the spreads. You think SEC team getting over a field goal at home? This is a program that is really struggled. Joe Milton looked terrible last week by you know by high standards obviously ran the ball well, but Air mailing a lot of throws its pit or pass for me, but I'd have to lay the three not the 3.5. But I do think this is as advertised. I think the Panthers just the word that sticks out their polished. I really tried. I know what I'm gonna get with them. Yeah, There's no question about that. N C state they covered the 18 last week against South Florida. I think they're very underrated Team. I had the over on the 6.5 wind total for NC State this year. I liked NC state going into the season and Mississippi State defensively needed the largest comeback in school history last week to meet Louisiana Tech. So again a really fascinating lower to your PC. SEC matchup really needed by SEC teams. What underrated top 25 teams can make a huge statement this weekend. We'll tell you next. It's college tailgate on ESPN radio, ESPN app. The NFL is on T. J And now Max Kellerman. Here's a guy that you drafted in the first round that you think could potentially be the successor to Aaron Rodgers in the future, but could at least be.

"On that i would say. Sevice is probably the second best quarterback that i've oh well maybe phone eggs up there but Brandon let me say this. I don't get hung up on rankings. After the first week everyone played a different types of opposition. And i i think goes out tomorrow night and it has a big time game that will change. I mean that that is a huge game and I know we. We haven't talked about yet but we will. Hey thank you so much for the call. Kevin is up next in north carolina. Hello kevin well. Hey paul thanks. You let me visit again Quick quick housekeeping. Check the underside of you're right forearm. You got dirt there. Bruce or something or my hallucinating. You're talking about my right arm. Your right arm yeah. It's just hair That that's all going in fifty different directions okay. My bad was my tv. I thought you had a bruiser picked up dirt somewhere. Anyway i will. I will try to take a bath tomorrow night if i can get it off. Okay brother Do a waxing single. Yeah there you go there. It is do. A waxing thing gets gets a pain you know. Yeah you know. I i've I'm lucky that that's all that's all you're saying about me. I'm hey what what's on your mind. You have another other than me bruising. Easily i just wanted to make you make sure you look well okay So the trickle down effect you know. I'm just blown away Obviously that they. Ac's gotta backfill three now. Maybe two more later. But i'm just blown away I think they took the right four schools But it just doesn't make any sense to me boise state you know. They're a great underdog story. But when you compare them to usf obviously you may have looked at that stadium. Usf plays in the super bowl stadium etcetera and and They're they're they're you know they're travel partners would be. Ucf and academically. They're better and they're all sports. My biggest problem with this league Frankly not memphis another pretty good a possibility but they disagree. They just went out like remember when you were a kid. Your your your your folks who drag you to the cafeteria and the dessert would be first and you'd put apple pie on there and you start piling. They just went out and grab whatever. Look good and there's no continuity to this league. yeah. I know the records are good. These these football programs but you just there has to be something to a league in. The big ten is just a hodgepodge. You got west. Virginia over here you got. Byu eight time zones. Away over here in boise up there and i i trying to say you know. They're trying to put off the inevitable and that's going under and I'll give bob bos be credit for that but as far as the league with any commonality which however. i think. It's a disaster. Hey thanks thanks to call. We must go to a break. We will start bouncing around some of the sites of the big games tomorrow including a stop in knoxville. we'll head to starkville. We have a lot of big games that we have a chance to talk about. We are live in fayetteville. Arkansas listening to paul finebaum show podcast. So first time. Ever on the paul finebaum show and we have an issue with paul. So it's dave pasch here in knoxville tennessee. Just going to tell you about what we learned. Today we spoke with josh hypol- the new head coach here at tennessee. He feels pretty good about his offense. Joe milton michigan. Transfer will start again tomorrow against pitt. Didn't have a great game week one but coach hypol- told us that team believes in joe. Milton and milton also told us that he played all of last year with a torn ligament in his thumb. He had surgery on that thumb after last season and he felt a connection with hypo going back to win. He was being recruited by hypo when he was growing up in. Orlando hypo coach. Ucf but at that point he was at missouri as the offense coordinator and he was trying to get milton to go play for the tigers. Milton chose harbaugh in michigan. But he feels like he's had that connection with hypo all along as for pit. The panthers won the coastal in two thousand eighteen. But it feels like the door is open. Not only for them to get back there but may be win the acc. They have one of the most experienced quarterbacks in college football. Maybe the most one of the most underrated anyway in kenny. Pickett and paul. You're back now. So go ahead next rap me on dave. I look forward to this day for so long. I i have to say. I mean everyone knows. You're a consummate professional but to be able to just pick up. And i mean you could have gone on for four more hours.

"For a better tomorrow. Movement can even bring us together when we're still because if we're focused on the next move we don't have to worry about what's behind us. Goodyear more driven. It looked like a first game in new offense. I i really do like Josh hi pulled his offensive line. I think he's a really good quarterback coach. Things are really good offensive coach. Tennessee still has a lot of culture changing to do. And i think it's a good start. They gotta w. But i also think for even joe milton their quarterback. I think he made some good place. You could see his talent but he's also got a lot of ways in which he could learn adapt he had quite a few middle of field throws that were opened that either held onto it. He took sacks he held on the ball too long time. So i think they made some good strides but they're still a long way from where at least a lot of tennessee fans want them to be. There are a lot of really cool. Things i get to do on a weekend like this but my favorite just being a talk show host is to sit in meetings with tim and and others and i just sit back like i'm not even here. Takeaways is your perspective of everything. and it's unfiltered. Maybe what we stay on the air. But i wanna talk to you about florida for a second because i just i hear from you and i realized again tomorrow night as manageable but in two weeks the country will be watching. You sound not put words in your mouth. But i will. You sound really fired up about this team. And the quarterback. Well i think fired up about to their quarterbacks i think emory is going to be have a really good season. I think he's He's developed over the last couple of years. I think he's smart. He's athletic. he throws a good ball. And then i think you're also going to see a young player. Anthony richardson who played a tiny bit last year. But i think you're gonna see him. Come onto the scene play. Probably he'll play the third drive saturday he might get a couple of drives and but then as it gets more and more. I think you'll see florida. Use him a little bit like florida. Use me my freshman year. And that was. I was thinking like the florida ever done this before this. I think he's actually let me if you're not in florida fan. You probably haven't heard this name very often. How would you describe him now. He's from a school in gainesville. Small school how. I mean the other than reincarnation this as a freak really. Yes i think he is very gifted athletically i think he is gifted as thrower gifted physically gifted with speed. And i think the one thing you have to find out as you know in those big moments will hinder handle pressure. I think you will. I think so. I think florida's in great shape with two special quarterbacks. That can i think anthony income in the gaming give emory a break to on third or fourth in short and and really help the team as well. I wouldn't be shocked if you at some point you see them both in the game at the same time that that was part of a national championship team that you've played on one of one of the two in terms of the cadence the rhythm of the game. How how is that when you're when you're when you're actively moving them in and out. I think it depends on the players. I think it can be hard times if not done well but if done well it can be very successful especially if they bring something different to the table and i think emory's the guy. I think he's going to be the every down quarterback but when you have a talent like anthony. I think that's someone you want to get in the game. You wanna be able short yardage third down change up you know whatever take pressure off. He can do so many things. I mean. you're talking about someone that is you know six four hundred thirty five forty pounds. That's gonna run pretty pretty fast. I don't want to just say what you know. He's fast he's going to run away from a lot of people. Okay another quarterback. I want to ask you about is is the is the one that will be quarterbacking. Lsu mcjohnson tomorrow night Yeah we're we're at friday. We've been talking about two weeks one week. Now it's tomorrow night against ucla that they they had. They had a pretty deep bench. Now they don't at that position. Yeah i'll tell you. I've been really impressed with him though. He is in a tough position. Third-string quarterback last year for whatever reason he finally gets a chance and he really stepped up and played well especially in the face of adversity going to swamp being down against a really good florida team finding a way to come from behind playing with a chip on a shoulder. I'm sure his dad has a lot to do with that and instilling that in him. And you know from everything you hear is really taken. The team by storm is leadership. And i think that lsu is going to need that a lot this week right you know everything that has happened in louisiana. The team flying out early the team all the way in the west coast playing the rosebowl. It's very easy to walk in there. And oh my gosh. This is the rosebowl bowl right. I think he's going to really rally him to this. This is another game. Let's focus because i think lsu plays locked in focus to the best of their ability. I think they're a better team than ucla. But i do think. Ucla is gonna come in very hungry to see if they can pull the upset. It is so great to have you on friday afternoon and we look forward to every chat. Tim many many thanks and we had not a single person here when you showed up and a couple of people have dropped by. I've always happens was great to be with you. "Atlanta georgia is our home today as it was yesterday in the skies are blue and the excitement level is raging. You're looking inside the college football hall of fame in just right across the street big game will be played tomorrow between alabama and the miami hurricanes they have not played since the ninety two sugarbowl their games everywhere and we will go across the nation this afternoon. Let's start with tennessee. Who kicked it. All off in the sec. Joe milton's debut was as tantalizing as it was maddening. If you were checking twitter right after the game started. I was getting a lot of tennessee is back tweets and then at halftime there was nervousness by the end of the game. It was a big win. And josh hypol- has done something that most tennessee coaches in modern day have done win the opener. I'd say in the modern era jeremy pruitt did not and he's no longer around but the majority of the coaches have done well before pruitt losing. It was johnny majors in one thousand. Nine hundred seventy seven losing his opener and as a young student reporter. I covered that gang. Great to have all of you with us. We are so delighted to kick the football season often. We'll be doing this every friday next week. We'll be on the road and it starts with nick sabin fifteen and one in atlanta only one loss here. Sec championship game in two thousand and eight. And we'll talk. We'll talk to the quarterback who cost him that game in about an hour. It is a big time weekend and we are ready to roll. It's hard on back in every game. We go out there. Everybody's gonna give their side. So we have to do saying i do think monte plays. It's best when it has a chip on its shoulder. I think there's something that keeps us. Going and motivates alan to every his lots of just to go out there and no chance that we got we born team national championships laugh everytime chamois plaza the days. They wanna play us as hard as they possibly can occur not wanting the best team to step on the field. I mean we just look at it like Another again you know we keep it real simple trying to get better every day. We'll see september four and that is certainly the big game here in atlanta. There's another game on monday night on this taking on louisville but the biggest game in the country is in charlotte at bank of america stadium and pat forty writing today s. I it may be time for kirby. Smart georgia to finally get over the hump. Georgia clemson did pretty well and openers. since fifteen. they both are undefeated. The differential quite significant these to open the twenty thirteen season. They played again in fourteen in athens. And everybody is watching the build up for this one. This rivalry began in eighteen. Ninety seven the one tonight if figures to be. I doubt it is hard to overstate the energy. The anticipation for this game plan. Because they're playing for pride. There were times during cam when dj may trevor. Look normal for georgia you to get to see jt danis. I think george just got their new starting quarterback g bring your own gut sixty minutes of hail and that's the way we like so we've been talking about both these games especially georgia clemson game all year long. And we're about to see what happens tomorrow for today. We will keep you busy. We start with sean mcdonough under the brilliant broadcasters in the industry he'll be doing the alabama miami game across the street marty smith joining us. Hi row in charlotte for the georgia. Someone who's had strict drinking champagne while miami fan would be of call cornerstone in corner store a in the corner store drinking a forty forty back. You understand say level city. Yeah no i listen i I was around in nineteen twenty eight years ago. I'm bourbon street when Miami fans were literally harassing not only alabama fans but alabama players. And of course they ended up getting destroyed in that game I'm not hearing much trash from the miami fans around here today. I mean it's definitely one little. I remember any district. I remember When miami was back a couple of years ago after beating notre dame remember that one is it's awesome saw when they realize until you can be clemson. I don't want to hear anything else out of eighty. That goes through the thing i hear. Hi thanks appreciate the call. Let's go to louisville and talk to john. Hey john.

"My problem is that these guys can get hurt easily. And not hurt easily. But they don't know when to get dap there. You've got to show their toughness. They're gonna try to do things that show that they're tough. And this is that kind of coach. If you ain't jumping up, you ain't coming in the game. Right? That's I mean, that's a great point. And that's the thing that we focus on with especially McNamara, You know, because we saw it last year, and you know he was Pretty light as a young kid, and you know, that was the thing with a guy like when Joe Milton is here. You looked at him, and he said, Well, he's 225 £240 or whatever. Maybe maybe more right on a good day. Who knows? I mean, he was the type of guy that you you thought? Well, he can withstand some of this. It doesn't work out. You go back to this situation now, but you're dealing with a smaller player who's got to Or to be able to handle that, because as we've seen the way Josh Goddesses offense works, the quarterback run threat really does have to be there. Jamie like it does have to be there like all times for this to really work the way they wanted to work. As we've seen if you take away like when Patterson was digged up that one year and everybody knew it right and everybody knew he wasn't going to pull the ball when everyone knows That that option is taken away. It becomes that much easier to defend right and he talked about having the ability to make these final adjustments based on what the defense is giving me in terms of a look. An alignment if you take one of those away from your place, because your quarterback can't handle you know enough On the ground. Then all of a sudden you got to change a lot about what you're doing. So those are all things that they have to, you know, take into account as well and strength gains and all those things and being smart gave me like you said, is a big one being smart. You know, that's Pulling it when you need to pull it, but also making sure that if it's not, you know an obvious whatever sometimes pulling it and only getting three yards is still productive. Because at least you're keeping them honest. You know what I mean? So so those are situations. I think that they have to go through the quarterbacks and make sure everybody knows like you said they're on the same page there that you know you want to Make sure that your guy if you find a guy that you like that he's able to stand up and take all this for 12 games, at least so you know, that's a big big factor here. Exactly And you know, it's in its key. I mean, the other thing is, I mean, Nick, we're not fooling ourselves. Look, Josh Gattis is in his third year. I mean, I got to see So much, much improved. With this office. I've got to see. I mean, they made changes to the offense. Look, my card is now in the running back, Coach. Somebody you really people have wanted I want. Yeah, you know. So, um, you got I mean, I don't know about Ceron more. I think that I've been told that the offensive lineman love him. They know that he's a tough coach, but he does it with a labor of love. I need to see improvement from this offensive life. A lot of these guys got a lot of playing time. Or some playing time when they did play games last year, So I want to see improvement with them, Um, the wide receivers they lost. They lost one of the best y receivers they had, but A. A lot of these young guys got a chance to play. I want to see how they improved. I mean, really, I think what what You want to see here from all these guys that you just mentioned there's people in every position group, you know, like you said, that all got time last year, and a lot of them got time and in some pretty Hot under the collar situations right where it wasn't comfortable, and it wasn't very fun. So you take those lessons and you internalize them. And what really, I think what you need to see from Gattis offense here in your three is is a quickness and a crispness and, you know, play to play. That we haven't seen yet, You know, And I think you know what I'm talking about. When? When you watch Michigan play. You can always tell when They're free and clear on offense, and you can tell when they're thinking way too much, And there's way too many times. In the last two seasons. Really? And urban pockets where you can tell that it sort of clicked. You know, later on in 2019, you can tell those guys started to get it there. You know the reaction times were faster. Guys are coming off the ball faster. Exploding. You know these types of things, but We saw this a lot last year would be a little sluggish because guys are thinking too much and guys don't really know where to go, and we don't really know what we're doing on this one. Or he doesn't know what he's doing on that one. You know those types of things. Always show up, and it makes you look slower than you are. So I think really, What we need to see here is that Kind of lag. Time needs to go away. If that can all go away, and these guys can just play up to their athletic potential, then you're gonna have a chance to hang with anybody. You come across because they still have recruited as we know. At a good level. They've still got good players in the program. As we know, Um they got offensive lineman the program that if they transfer tomorrow would have a you know a list of people calling them longer than you know, any of us could put together, so I mean, they have guys that can play. It's just a matter of now. Are you going to get the time on task? Right? Are you going to get all the details down and yeah, Jamie, Like you said, That's on Josh. Get it. This is your three for him, and you know all the organizational hiccups. Got smoothing out now.

Joe Milton Josh Gattis Josh 12 games Patterson Jamie 2019 McNamara last year Josh Goddesses Nick Gattis tomorrow third year £240 three yards 225 Michigan Ceron three

"Had a great year. You could be talking about him being one of those late first early second rounders, but, you know, I don't know if teams they're gonna hold that against him. He does. He does have AH, lot of good broad numbers there come by numbers, but he just doesn't have the production out there on the field. Yeah, I think overall are are receiving corps kind of underachieved, and I think it was. I think it had a lot to do it with just our overall passing game, and that's going to play a part again this year. I think this group of kids that we just talked about it ruefully his contingent upon there's a lot of things, but you know, obviously, which we have to have some some solid plate at worst at the quarterback position and something that even even that receiving corps that we just got done talking about from a few years ago. Catch the damn ball. Michigan has had a case of the drops now for I don't know, close to five years. It's been pretty bad. Yeah, but I think this year it was all in all was the one that was dropping the ball anybody else that you would look there with a wide receivers that you would say with At the drop Your right here you're saying Yeah, Honestly, the tight ends too. Yeah, there. There were contributed that problems Well, and and I actually said this over the winner and I'm gonna I'm gonna echo that again. The group that I have a least confidence in because that was most disappointed in because I thought they had a lot coming back was the linebacking corps. I mean, Ross really disappoint me. I think 44 before he got hurt. Yeah. I don't think he was playing all that great as well. So and you know some of our losses that looked really bad against Wisconsin, uh, really showed up in a linebacking corps. They weren't getting off blocks. They weren't making tackles or run. One Fits are awful because you saw you saw the amount of space it that these guys had to run the football. It was it was bad, and the other thing was, I think this switch to a 34 really puts more of business on this group. So that's what that's why I'm really concerned. And if you're throwing in the guys that we recruited for Viper well, now what the hell we do with them? Which way did they go up and wait? Do they go down and wait to become safeties? Who knows? So we really haven't recruited that position. The guy that I'm looking for is that man child. I want to see what this junior Coulson does. Maybe I don't know. Maybe he cried. Maybe as our great fall camp and get to see some snaps this year, maybe even makes One type of contribution. I don't know. His name popped up a few times and spring. You know, he was in for spring. So you know, maybe as the linebacker, one of those guys that was in for the Viper, Mohand he transferred So the only other one that I think that they had groomed for that was Solomon. Anthony Solomon, who was also that viper, but, yeah, you get that speed, and you know you're you're you're playing them Sometimes. I mean, ah, fast. 34. You know you're putting him out there with with Ross and Barrett. And Ah, And who knows? Junior Coulson, Man, That's gonna be the surprise. We see. What that defense looks like. And how many of those guys they're gonna be flying around their line back? I wouldn't be surprised. I mean, why not put the freshman out there? See what he could do. I mean, some of these microbes. We're gonna have to move move too. Safety. I mean, that's that's gonna be there right proposition if you think about it, So, yeah. I mean, I think you'll see the young you'll see a few young guys. Play. And junior court Jr is one of those guys that's going to play. And lastly, I don't know what's happened to. Ah, our boy J. J and anybody that knows no days M I A. So I figured I'd lay a trap out for real quick kind of pig piggybacking off of yesterday. Um His 1976 Raiders 13 to 1 beat my Vikings in the Super Bowl. But we all know that J. J. R that Jamie Morris's Patriots were robbed. Huh? Sugar Bear Hamilton on the last drive getting call for a roughing the passer on a 3rd 19 wins that game, and they basically with New England was going to do is they were gonna validate The only loss that the Raiders had that year was a 48 17 beat down in New England so they actually would've validated that win. And going into the Coliseum and the other thing was, you know, they beat Pittsburgh for a second time, But, you know, people forget that rock. You know that Blier and Franco actually both have 1000 yards that year. Kind of like Concha and Mark did And they were both hurt for the championship game, so the Raiders had some breaks. So I'm waiting for the Chi street work. So they take your team. Your Super Bowl was painted it best. You know, Billy, I was gonna ask you the question, but I think I know the answer. What era? Did you think was the best in pro football? What decade already know what I'm saying? Seventies for you. It is well, you know what is in the seventies? All I did was read about football in the sixties, and you know it's the growth. The gross that happened from when the F L came really started with the 58 championship, but You know, at Yankee Stadium, the Colts and the Giants that went in the overtime, and that was obviously that was never seen before. So to me, the birth of modern football starts and that's 58 championship. And that just you know, you add the a FL in 1960. Then you had the bidding wars and the TV contracts. And, of course you had to merger and it pretty much ended with what with Joe name is scattered by the way that is the biggest You know, do you could say whatever you want about Joe name If he wants the biggest football game ever played, nobody's going to tell me different. And, of course, my Minnesota Vikings. Validate Ba fells win the year before by getting beat down by the Chiefs. And then after that, you know they really emerged and you know it was the NFL as we know it today, but If I had to pick in our Yeah, I would say the 19 sixties for May because that growth period is just absolutely incredible. But And I would say the same for music to write. When you call, agree with that, like the sixties music in the sixties. It's incredible. Whatever I would say, I would say the seventies. I like the eighties myself. There you go. That's the way it goes. All right. Hey, Thanks, Billy. We always appreciate it, boys. You take care. I'll talk to you all tomorrow Go blue. It's great to hear from you. Weighing in on the Wolverines pro football right across the board here, 734. 998 10 50. That is, the number will weigh in on mark Hemorrhage. New contract coming up. But You know, uh I think Nicole might have done better about not coming back, and I think you'd have been better off. I think he did better, but not having nobody's throwing the ball off, even in the head. Don't build throwing balls off. Even if this ain't nothing to give Joe Bill Donna, I don't have a beef with Joe Milton. But You know, I remember everyone Michigan played, Uh, Claude in.
