NPR news NAP Elice, The West Bank, You're listening to all things considered from NPR news. Hello. I'm Joe Martin Stand the film critic of The Wall Street Journal. The first distinction of this year's tenure. I'd film festival is that it took place last year It went dark during the pandemic. This year, the festival managed to take place actually, rather than virtually, and it did so dramatically as always, thanks to its spectacular place high up in the Rocky Mountains. Attendance was off peak. Pardon the pun. But the slate of new films renewed Good faith and movies. As larger than life images on vastly larger than living room screens At a time when the future of the theatrical mediums clouded at best. Two of my favorite films could hardly have differed, mourn substance, but they pulled off the same magic trick of wrapping potent themes and crowd pleasing packages. Belfast, written and directed by Kenneth Brana has set in 1969 so fictionalized recollection of his childhood at a moment of peril and promise for his family caught up in Northern Ireland sectarian violence they're confronted by an agonizing choice between staying in the city they love or making a new life in England. Will Smith Stars and King Richard. He's Richard Williams of Father and the tumultuous throws of raising five Children, two of them destined to be among the greatest tennis players of all time. So wonderful performance in a film that disarms whatever skepticism you may have had about Williams as the obsessive coach and ceaseless promoter of Venus and Serena Williams. Mainly King Richard is about tennis. Most importantly, though, it's about educating Children, giving them grounding and focus inspiring them. And since these are black Children growing up in Compton, keeping them safe from physical and emotional harm until they can take flight on their own. The festival's wittiest film was Marcel the Shell with shoes on a 90 minute version of the Stop Action YouTube collaborations between the director Dean Fleischer camp and the actress Jenny Slate. Marcel, As you may know, is a tiny, articulate, often anxious But ultimately fearless mollusc with one eye to shoes and the sea shell for protection from life's vicissitudes. I can't wait to see him and his movie again. Finally, one documentary was in the class by itself. It's called Hallelujah. Leonard Cone Journey a song and it's a densely detailed biography of the Canadian poet, singer and songwriter. But this majestic, almost symphonic production is also a chronicle of the singular song, Cohn wrote, revised and expanded over the course of decades. As well as in the count of how hallelujah has become a receptacle into which new generations of singers pour their musical souls. Like the song, whose title is an affirmation and the festival, which continues to honor cinema, the film affirms the value and power of making art. I'm Joe Morgenstern. But if you probably talked to me about this like if you if we did this interview after i was coming off three in a row middle of last year this probably would have a very different tone. It would have been me aggressively biting every nail down to the quick looking like a nervous wreck. I'm a little more confident and a little more experienced with the highs and lows of this now after having done this and feel like we've established and showing ourselves pretty well in the series. I think we've proven that we belong here. I agree and i appreciate you. Always coming on the podcast and giving me this much time. So i think that's awesome one last thing real quick. "And that's what got him the opportunity at ferrari. I think our team is good enough that if we found an elite level talent person. It's a good enough team that we let them be able to show that off right. We're not gonna let them down. So i know that i know that our cars are good enough or are good enough for people are good enough. I'm well established enough that they know that i'm not gonna screw romani standpoint. We've got a good team going here. But i think that's what it's gonna take. It's gonna take somebody light elite level driver in. That's what we'll go up there in the playoffs and contention. We can't week out. Elevate our program maybe to the next level. How much racing do you just watch in general because you tweet a lot you tweet when you see drivers in nascar doing things that stand out but how much racing to you just taken on any given week a fair amount adieu like formula one alike indycar So i mean any five hundred happened few weeks ago. Now watch that. I like dirt racing. I'm not gonna act like a lot of it. Dirt racing is something to be seeking out. I would say that. I have a passive observer of racing like when racing his on and it is easily accessible. I watch it. Would i have to like go. Get a subscription service to something like probably not watching that right. so that's it. I consider myself a race fan for sure. And i watched the truck races and i watched the cup races and i'll watch an arca race at a lot of times kelly. That's where my own benefit. Because we're probably running on the track. And i wanna see like what's going on with okay is the groove moving around. Is it really treacherous right now. Especially if it's like. Pj one was put down track. I'm like all right. Well what's going on with the group here so sometimes it selfish reasons but regardless i'm able to see a lot of people in prospects if you will kind of those other series a difference between okay stick on the same team right. Let's look at over at niece. Which i feel like would be comparison to martins motorsports. Macneice is not an elite team in the truck series right but they probably get notch right below that of course of our has just been absolutely outstanding this year. And you go. that's pretty good guy. He's taken a team that you think is second tier and elevating them into a top five each and every week right and that's not saying anything bad about me. This is budget. Wise like yeah. They're not spending what kabul motorsports spend. That's been with s suspending. They're not as established a store sport. They're not there that next little bunch and he's consistently i feel like outperforming the equipment. You also have a guy at riot. Who's on that team. Who is at this point. A veteran veteran driver in consistently running well in that equipment. The man it's hard to not look at carson..

"Like what are we do it. And so i've been in those situations several times this year. Kellyanne it's tough because you understand the big picture and there are times where you go. You know what they're basically given me a top fifteen here. Do i want to risk it to try to get a top ten. There's times where we have. There's times where we wound up on the wrong end of the stick. They're just like we did at charlotte a couple of weeks ago we lined up fourteenth with like whatever it was tend to go twelve to go. I could very easily drop to the back. Just a few of those other guys finished fifteenth and not even not wrist any day. But it's like how man top ten right there that you wind up getting the short end of the stick. You're not always gonna make the right decision. It's again it's tough. It seems like the raw were often. Well that's why i feel like life is never easy. It's it's always the racist ever easy. I'll say that. Yeah will there. Is that too so it when you eventually get to the point. Where if martins motorsports turns out as you wanted to and you get to be this ward brothers like operation somebody else's gonna come in and i know there's a lot of teams out there that have scouts all over people at short tracks in. They're finding talent all over the place. But i've heard of it. I've heard i've heard of it but to me and i say that because to me the best scouts are drivers themselves in my opinion drivers. No drivers right. You've probably already got your eye on people or we'll know it when you see it of who you'd want to drive your race car. Definitely i think a few of the names would probably surprise you because it's you look for two things right. Look for somebody talented. But i'm also looking for a mentality Along with it and they also have to be able to funding right. I mean that's just that's the game we're playing nowadays where sure could use some sponsors in partially fund a team can what junior does he does with zeros than i do but we could do the same thing the sponsors that we have right okay. Sure but they're still going to be more funding required to probably take the team to that type of playoff every year level in this series. We're in some looking for somebody. That is yet talented but also willing to drive for a team that is not established is the best team in the field right willing to drive for a team where they're gonna probably they're they are going to be the thing to elevate the team up right so like i firmly. Believe if. I put. Kyle larson in my car that he would probably take it into the top ten consistently every week like i. I believe that right. But it doesn't mean that. I suck just means a kyle. Larson is also so. I look like formula one teams in some of the things that they do. Kelly looks like they're looking for the person that is going to carry them. Charlotte clare when he ran for who was an alfa romeo right or whatever they it was an alpha yatom boy van when he ran for them. He was like finishing in the points every week. It was pretty obvious that he was like of curious the team..

"Yeah it's funny. Because i hear people like you go tom joe you. You're such a great interview. We love talking to you man. You have credible insight personality and man just can't wait to have you back on the podcasts. He added. I'm like yeah. I actually don't get invited on a lot of stuff. I go all right. Well what am i doing wrong. My pissing people off. We're have a misstep here. And i talked to my peers. And they're like yeah man. You're good driver okay. Well doesn't gil. How hubbard lake is really calling me to do this kind of stuff. So yeah without a doubt. I think about how my career probably could've taken different turns. I would have done a lot of things differently over the course of time. Probably the first thing. I would have done differently. Not do it would have been like a pilot done done anything literally anything else except for this but being in it yeah definitely. I wonder 'cause there's guys kelly and this is probably going to give me a little bit of trouble. So here outgoing. Give me your sound bite near near guys. When they come into the sport and girls that they will basically just pay the money right. They'll pay the money to get with a really good team. Because it's not just about competitiveness on the race track. It's the whole package if you pay money to go get with. Gm s in the truck series. You're getting with the best team in the series right. That's guaranteed publicity for the driver. It almost in a way is like establishing you as a up and coming person in the sport upcoming driver it gives a level of liberty to you. You also have your competitive truck so you're probably going to run up there in the top fifteen top ten. That's gonna give more credibility to you as a driver right to me as a driver like really gives credibility to the truck. The you're sitting in but that is the level of appearances right so even if that driver like let's take rafeal hard for example who's a great kid. We had our podcast probably like a month or two ago. I hated to see him get pulled out of the truck and it's refunding but that was an example of like when he goes into track he's only going with like that caliber of a team right and that has established him as a good driver upcoming driver. He's only been branded a certain way of running up there at the front of the field. Okay i never had that right. Like i've always kind of done it. The hard way really trying to brand myself is a good driver. That's us maybe not in the best equipment and that's really tough to do sometimes whereas when you start the top improved it like well. If i'm at a good car actually can can win. And i can run up here when you get in a bad car. Everybody's like oh no. He's not the problem and almost like gives you a pass right where somebody like me that maybe just has never gotten that shot because i've never literally walked over to gm s with a big sponsor set. Here y'all wanna run a truck and that's what it would take. Because i've never done that..

"There's a bunch there that i'm around racing all the time and like my theory on this is i think these are the best guys. These are the guys that have consistently separated themselves from the rest of the full time field. Right it's of operation with them all the time that i must be pretty decent at doing what i do right. If those are the guys that are neck neck with and the points on the racetrack. Like josh williams. Just finished last week at mid ohio right so if i can't beat them. I know that. I'm putting myself in position for really good finish which we did charlotte by the way. We just got wrecked so pretty annoying. Now yes you are. I've got the stats here pulled up. That's what i keep looking at. And charlotte was just the that was that turned into a wild day for a lot of people. Yeah that's right so like i've been on the side of the fence now for a very short period of time and what i'm talking about is from a performance standpoint with my car that i know if we had hundred lap green flag run at charlotte motor speedway. We had enough speed. That i was going to stay on the lead lap period. Now i had always had that right like there's times have dropped for. Bj or drive the car along we had enough speed to fight for the lucky dog. But we were probably going to go a lap down at a fifty lap. Ron like we knew that in if we didn't over the course of a full staged like hey. We're doing pretty good today. I'm not even thinking about that. Now when i'm driving our cars like we've got a group of guys but fast cars. We got plenty of speed so something like charlotte happens. I was really pissed. And it wasn't because we got wrecked. I mean i was obviously upset about that. But i mean what could have really done. We kind of just get cleaned out in a big water cars. Alright.

"Well doubts flown. Ah so now that actually costs a lot more to fix it rather than just like maintain it and what we call. Fresh ended up will now. It's blown up. Should i gotta buy like have to block to buy more stuff for it all right same thing with the motor at mid ohio. That motor only had one race on it. So i was planning on getting three more races out of it and it blows up okay. So that kind of changes the time line like i was planning on spending the money to maintain the engines but essentially i just got cut out of four races worth of value on my engines and like that car. I was going to race net car more times. I mean i have other cars like. I'm not going to spend the money to fix that car. I have other cars. But i was planning on running neck. So that's where this comes into the kind of a resource allocation thing like is it costing me money now. I'm really it is yeah. I mean it's a wrecked car. I wanna fix it. It's gonna cost money. But now i'm just going to shift our focus over these other cars and yet it will probably change how we approach a few races. Because now we're going to have to run a few cars back back. You okay well. I can't be super aggressive in this race of. I've gotta run it next week. So it'll change that a little bit but will it completely change my business outlook now probably not. Let's go a little bit more inside baseball. Because i know you'll give me a straight answer on this obviously over the last now years it's been a little over a year since The of course the pandemic started but racing the way we're racing without practice not qualifying for the most part of course this year you get some of it every so often so in the last year or so we keep hearing nascar say we're trying to help the teams this is to help teams teams wanted and i love asking this question to folks because you get different answers depending on who you ask some people say yes. It's helped some people says allah probably helps a cup guys. Maybe not so much us all right. Tommy joe martins. So you and the any series with martins. Motorsports does not have in practice or qualifying not having to build that extra car not having to buy as many tires for practice and things of that nature hotels days all that. Take me inside baseball here. does that help. Your team has the way we've been doing this. Quote unquote saved teens..

"This season. We finished twenty first in points last year. And you go okay. Well i could probably take a provisional at daytona and still get in the race right like i'm probably high enough. It's going to be close. But you know i at least have something to fall back on whereas last year. We didn't have that so there was a level of certainty going into the year. But also i think this is the most competitive field has been in probably the last year or four years where you had a lot more team showing up. We're starting forty cars every week. And we're starting forty every week but the way that the pay is structured. Mrs little bit inside baseball right. Is the top thirty in the points. Essentially think of the top thirty in the points is getting the full paycheck. It's a good way of looking at it for thirty first thirty six. They're going to get a discounted paycheck because they're they're not gonna get what we call the talk thirty bone which winds up being about seven to fifteen grand race so it's a pretty good chunk of money right especially when you times everything types thirty three but really the the danger spot for everybody is that thirty seven hundred fortieth spot because those people are only getting paid forty five hundred dollars race which to the average person sounds like well heck i mean. That's what pays to win late model race yet. This ain't a late model race. I wish list from an expense. Boy that is not what we're talking about like that's two sets of tyres. That's not paying for literally anything else. It's tough so there was still like a a feeling of nervousness because the beginning of the season kinda sets that whole thing right like the points fluctuate so much in those first three to five races. Where you know. Every single person is bringing their absolute best car. Buying the full complement tires leasing engines. Putting the best drivers in there. They can possibly put in there and as a organization. We're sitting there going okay. We've gotta stay in the top thirty like that's where it starts right. That's the the mendoza line for us is staying in the top thirty points okay. We had a goal of being in the top twenty in points and we were able to accomplish that for all the way up until the last like couple races. We've had a few failures and if you dns but we actually probably completed all of our goals. Even though maybe wasn't like the sexiest venture of all time. we had a few top fifteen stock twenties. We were being pretty consistent towards that part of field. So i would say overall kelly yes. I think. We're accomplishing goals as a team..

"To the racing. Haider's podcast. I'm your host kelly crandall i have a great conversation for you today. I know i say that every week but my goodness. I really love the guests that i've been able to have honesty in their engagement. And tommy joe martins is no different in fact tommy. Joe is one of my favorite people to talk to. So i'm really glad that i reached back out to get him on the podcast once again because we had a fantastic conversation that really started in a place didn't think we were going to start. Tommy jo apparently had some things. He wanted to get off his chest just about where his mind has been. Recently some concerns. He has about the sport and the spineta series and my goodness that took us down a rabbit hole. I didn't think we're going to go into. But i loved it because it got me to think about some things that hadn't been on my radar and i love when people can make me do that so right wrong or indifferent. Tommy joe is here to offer his opinion on that his concerns about the sport. And then we're going to go into all things martins motorsports. Tommy joe of course drives the number forty four for his own team in the xp series. It is their second year in the series. So we're gonna catch up to see how things are going since they shuttered the truck program to focus on xfinity series racing. We're gonna talk about what the stress level and workload has been the last couple of weeks because they had a rough stretch between coda and mid ohio. Were they finished thirty. Fifth twenty ninth and thirty nine. They had a crash in there. They had some engine issues. So we're gonna talk about that what it's like to be a smaller budget team. And what their inventory looks like. The good news is since then since we have talked. Tommy joe has finished twenty first at texas and was twentieth or in nashville superspeedway. So hopefully starting to get some momentum back on their side because he desperately needs that and again just a wide ranging conversation everything from team owner perspective to driver perspective. How long he might be a driver coming to the realization that there's gonna come a time where he's going to get out of the car but he has a plan for what he wants martins motorsports to be and we're also going to dig into that. I think you'll find that quite interesting thing of note here. You're going to hear digging in our recording and that's just an email notification. Tommy joe is a busy guy. And i appreciate the fact that when he spoke to me he had left the shop to get comfortable and zoom with me but his email was going off because again. He's a busy guy and he's running a race team so i'm sure there was a lot going on. I don't think it's a big deal. But i wanted to let you know about it. That's what you're going to hear just kind of adds to the environment here on the podcast. So be on the lookout for that or just. Don't pay attention to it again. Not a big deal so really great conversation really excited to share this one with you and enjoy a lengthy one but against so much to unpack here. I hope you enjoy it. Here is tommy. Best move best move. That's a common best cock definitely his his spine Buster is not awesome. This is actually the one he gave to the MS. This week is better. He's a better Champion than the MS. Yeah than goofy. Fukme. Well, that's the thing. They finally booked him correctly, right? They gave they took off idle off someone shity. Yeah, and it's giving him he has a mouthpiece now Roman Reigns as a mouthpiece, but his mouthpiece doesn't use his mouth know his mouthpieces mute. Yes, mouthpiece doesn't allow what he said Roman Reigns out there. He says a few words, but Heyman cuts the promos then you'd have the same situation on Raw with Bobby Lashley MVP, and that's why she actually has never been better. I never thought I would root for a Bobby Lashley as Champion, but you know, right right. He was almost though booked as a face. It was a total Babyface win, and yep. Everyone was rooting for it because the MS was such a shit like a little bitch. Yeah how we got the title was a bitch. They played it up. You knew it was going to happen at the end the way they were doing it, right every time they restart a mass three times. Yeah, you know, the guys got go over but like just to ring the bell and grab the like like this isn't that big of a bitch lastly is not Brock Lesnar, right? He's their best option for Mackintosh face cuz Lesnar's I guess isn't coming back or maybe they don't want them there really fast tracking Drew McIntyre beating flares record, huh? Maybe that's really get a lot of times. Yeah. Yep. Fast yeah, he'll be what a three-time champion come WrestleMania. Yeah, and in the span of a year in the year three-time champ. Yeah. I'm a little more deep on my personal Danica price to brand just because It's a person and personable. Yeah, I'm one of my friends. Her name's Amy Joe Martin. And she has built a personal brands of like Shaquille O'Neal and Hilton Hotels in the rock. And her big thing was that people connect to people, not logos. And so when I built my personal brand under my own my own instagram, that was really the bulk of it. When I built that, I remember thinking about the fact that we don't own I don't own instagram, right? Instagram can decide to just disappear one day and I'll have put in hours and hours and hours of water that day, I would write you think about it Totally. It's true, though. I mean, think of all the changes that have happened Absolutely all the social media platform. Absolutely. And I remember thinking what if that happened? What would I have to show for it? And so for me, model Mills was this way to say OK, built this work? I've built this trust with people. I've shared my story around food. Have this food changed my life. How did I provide them? A service that really helps them and also have something that is separate from me and separate from instrument doesn't just really rely on this sort of space. I have a friend who was a vine star. And we have this conversation a lot. She was huge on vine and then fine. Just disappeared like they deleted it. And it was a really interesting conversation about Okay, Here's you know, we don't we don't own this platform now. Yeah, Yeah. So you own model meals, so I dont O, obviously, but like the idea is that okay? You don't own instagram. So at the end of the day, like what is yours? What are you bringing to the world And you know for me? What I love about having a personal brand is that no one could tell me. I'm doing it wrong here yourself for living. Nobody can tell you're doing it long, And that's always felt really easy to me. And like, very, you know, not intimidating because if I just if I me for a living And there's no way to mess that up. And I think that's like a really gentle way of building a business. Love it. Okay, We're gonna take a quick break. And when we come back, we're gonna talk more about content on social media. "Third democratic presidential contest of the campaign season ended the same way as the second senator Bernie Sanders on top this time in the Nevada caucuses this is Steve Herman in Las Vegas this is certainly a big win for Bernie Sanders the Vermont senator was expected to win all the polls show them with a comfortable lead but the wind itself is a very very commanding win for Sanders he usually beats his closest competitor Joe Biden the judge ends up in third place this is very good news for the Sanders campaign but not so much for Joe Martin L. looks to talk Carolina next Saturday to try to re energize has so far disappointing campaign fourth place finisher Elizabeth Warren spoke of a man who wasn't there but who does tend to draw similar comments from president trump I want to talk specifically for just a minute to talk about that is coming our way and it's a big threat not a tall one but a big one Michael Bloomberg we only start appearing on ballots on super Tuesday in early March
