"Yeah. Rambling on radio show. What's that called? I know. I know. What's that called? Big problems. It just called fritzi. Meeting therapy. And by the way, as a bears fan, we really have no leg to stand on with the packers. We're just waiting for that day where they don't have either Brett Favre or Aaron Rodgers under center. If there is ever a time. Do we have the Thursday night schedule? What do we have here? I have the 2021 Thursday schedule. Oh, but I don't care about that. I want to know what's ahead. What wise ahead? How many Texans games are we going to be forced to watch? Because Thursday night last year had like ram Seahawks had cowboys Buccaneers, Buccaneers, eagles, Broncos, browns, packers, cardinals, dolphins, ravens, raiders, cowboys, bills, saints, cowboys, saints, what do you have, Pauline? Okay, so here are the upcoming games. I want you to judge them as if this were August and you're looking at the schedule. Okay. Saints at Cardinals. Both expected to be playoff. I would have been lukewarm on that. They're both predicted to make the playoffs. Ravens at Buccaneers. That one would be big. That's huge. That'd be big. Eagles at Texans. That would not be fair. Oh, this is not going to help the cause. Falcons at Panthers. Those two teams don't like each other. Titans, that packers? Medium? It's a medium. Let's see what if Malik Willis is playing. The week 13, you have bills at patriots. Historically saucy. Okay, if Baylor zappy has beaten out Mac Jones. Let's go. Now you're talking. Zappy mail time. I don't think it's far fetched. I don't. Because Mac hasn't played that well. No, he is not. And if you want to look at who was a more prodigious, prodigious passer, Baylor zappy was. When he was in college now you can say Mack played against better talent, but he did have better talent on his team. It just feels like I don't think it's far fetched. Yes. The last four, Thursday night games this year. Raiders at rams. Before the season, that was spicy. That would be good. Okay. 40 not week 15, 49 years F Seahawks. No, it would have been before the season you thought it was going to play the role of spoiler. Week 16 Jaguars at jets. Who knows? Who knows? Marvin likes it. Yeah. And nobody else. No one else on earth. Week 17, cowboys, by the time they got some national air time. At the Titans. And way to do well because of the cowboys. For all that money, you can't get a flex situation. Well, if you spend a billion, that's not a big deal anymore. I guess you can't flex Thursday night. No, you can't. So I thought that out. Okay. When we come back, the eagles offensive lineman Jason Kelsey takes a shot at the cowboys. On the heels of the game coming up this weekend, could this be bulletin board material? "Now it is a different game and I do wonder the role of the running game, especially when you when you can go back and review and replay everything. It's a risk averse game and I did talk to Billy Beane about this and I remember asking him what he felt Ricky would be in today's game and he said he'd be my trout. He said trout has much more power than Ricky, but Ricky's got plenty enough power to get the ball out of the ballpark 30 times. Ricky still has the incredible eye. You wouldn't be able to pay Ricky enough with the advanced metrics we use in terms of the way he can affect the game. We would probably have him be a three hitter instead of a leadoff hitter because of that combination of speed and power. And we would emphasize the power side more than we would emphasize the speed. And while he was done, while he was talking, I was thinking to myself, is having Ricky bat third and emphasizing power over speed really having Ricky Henderson. Right. That doesn't quite sound like Ricky Henderson. I was in, I was in west palm right before the pandemic. And I was with bob Boone, interviewing baboon and talking to Mike Rizzo, the GM of the Washington Nationals and Mike was telling me now back when I got into the business, GMs used to tell me all the time. And appropriate stolen base percentage was 75%. You make it three out of four times that league average is high 60s, you're great. If you're stealing at 75% you're in good shape. Rizzo told me that the nationals, you got to steal at 85%. To steal at 85% and above. So essentially, they want you to midbrain, basically. Essentially, not out of ten times. He says, well, what we do is we reduce attempts for accuracy, right. So we will sacrifice volume for accuracy, and I'm thinking Ricky stole a 130 basis one year. He attempted a 170, he made a 172 attempts one year. And no team does that today. And so you do sort of wonder Joe where I say Joe Madden disagrees with me is in that Joe thinks that because Ricky and Ricky's prime, you look at Ricky in 1985, Ricky stole 80 out of 90 times. He was 80 and ten. So someone like him breaks the mold because he is stealing at such a high rate at high volume. So maybe you let him do it. But you have to wonder if they would allow that because let's face it the year. He stole when he stole his one 30. His percentage was 75%. Maybe he's discouraged the same way he was discouraged when he first got into the game. And it discouraged Ricky is not an enthusiastic Ricky. So one of the things that people don't talk enough about is when you have a job, how many jobs have we ever had in our lives? Any of us, whether you're a baseball player or an electrician, where your boss just says go and do what you do best. And you need that confidence. And so for a Ricky Henderson to have all these different rules about when you can go and when you can and what the repercussions are going to be, if you don't make it, it's a totally different guy as a totally different player. Yeah, you'd like to think that if the best ever at something comes along, you would let him be the best ever. And I guess Madden has backed up his words a bit with how he handled Shohei Ohtani, right? And he went Otani BO tani, which was nice to see. But I don't know whether that would go for Ricky just because not only is it a matter of the percentage, but it's also a matter of the wear and tear, right? And Ricky was basically like that anymore. The game is not I remember talking to JP Rashad about this a bunch of years ago when he was the GM of the Blue Jays. And he was like, you know, first he was talking about just the sacrifice game and give up outs to score runs. We don't do that anymore. That's not how we play. And so the ability to go out and affect the game. And one of the things that Madden was saying was he's like, look, when we use a stopwatch, any pitcher who gets to the plate one two. They're faster. Something like that. It's over. You can't steal they're not going to give you the green light. One, two, one, three, it's over. You're not going to be allowed to go. Ricky was beaten the stopwatch as a 38 year old. Yep. You know, when he was with the angels in 97, Ricky was beating the stopwatch at a guy, a guy who was getting to the plate at one two Ricky was still stealing off of him. So how many baseball people, especially in today's game, were managers are scared to death. They don't have the autonomy they used to have. They don't run the game anymore. How many of those managers are going to risk letting Ricky do his Ricky thing? When the entire front office in the analytics department is saying that he can't do it. You just don't, you don't take those kind of risks. And so it is difficult to envision Ricky being what he was in today's game. I just don't see it. Now, a Ricky like talent, I think Billy bean is correct. I think that I think you turn into trout. I think you're a guy who can run who doesn't run. If you're a guy who has power and the power is emphasized, and because of Ricky's unbelievable eye, he's not going to be one of those players today who's hitting two 25. And he's hitting 28 home runs. Ricky's still going to hit 300 Ricky still going to get his 400 on base, Ricky's still going to get his stolen bases, but they're not going to be nearly as much. He's going to be closer in terms of steals to a Mookie betts or a Jacobi elsbury or somebody like that who's getting 40, 45, maybe 50 steals at max, right? And there is the toll it takes on you physically where he would miss games and in retrospect, it's ridiculous that people attributed that to a lack of desire because who wanted to play baseball more than Ricky Henderson ever. He played longer than any other modern position player and he would have kept playing if they had let him. But it beats you up to run that much too. Have all those impacts. Absolutely. It does. And I think the other thing about that was, look, if you were an outfielder back in the day,

"And then there was, of course, the basis loaded intentional walk. Yeah, did you know that he walked? I did. Intentional walk in the face. Yeah, we might talk about another intentional walk in this episode, but that one took the cake. They ended up winning that game, but as we talked about at the time, that was, that was crazy pants, I think, is the technical term for that move. And, you know, he did it in order to shake things up or whatever. That was the manager, the equivalent of everyone walking up to a nickelback song, basically. And it quote unquote worked in that case. It didn't really work as we talked about at the time because they allowed more runs in that inning than you would have expected them to just going into that situation. But they did win the game. But that's the sort of thing where it's like, well, maybe one like that is enough to tell you. This guy maybe that's a great in game manager. And so if you're doing a lot of other things to make up for that and everyone loves you and you're a great leader and motivator, then maybe you can make up for the occasional basis loaded intentional walk. But it would take a lot and there's no indication that Madden really had that kind of ability anymore. So I can't say he was wronged here. I can't say that it's his fault that the angels last a bunch of games in a row or that they're below 500 again, but I also can't say that he was really helping them at this point. Right, I think that taken in conjunction with his sort of mishandling of the potential of moving trout off of center, which we've talked a lot on this podcast about how when it comes to managers and the stuff that they do that is perhaps the most impactful. It's a lot of like, it's like people management that we don't see. You know, it happens in the Clubhouse when reporters aren't around. And so we're sort of left with these very isolated and perhaps muddy in terms of how indicative they are of the general managerial approach of the manager incidents in public. And so, you know, I don't want to make too much of a spring training musing about usage, but when the musing is about the best player in baseball who happens to play for your team and who you would imagine want to maintain some kind of good relationship with. It isn't a great isolated indicator even if it's an isolated one. So I think it's probably fine. I think at points we have thought that Joe Maddon has been a little too cute, but there have been upshots to that where he seemed at times like he was the right guy to try to navigate Otani's usage as he was doing two way stuff at a time when he hadn't really demonstrated that he was going to be able to sustain that over the course of an entire season, let alone to an MVP level. So like there have been moments where it's like, oh, well maybe this guy can be a little too clever by half, but maybe given the way he's being too clever by half is seemingly maximizing the usage of one of the most exciting players in baseball and one of the best players on this team. Maybe that's a tradeoff that's worth it, but you have to keep making deposits in the account, right? You can't just keep drawing off of the same couple of good moments. So I like you, I don't know that it necessarily needs to all be laid at his feet, but I don't know that moving on is going to be all that big of a problem either. And yeah, maybe we'll just see fewer bases loaded intentional walks. I can't. I still can't believe that that happened, Ben. That happened. That happened. And I remember Clemens was preparing to write about something else, and I was like, I think you should not, and you should instead write about this. It's so nice when we have baseball because it often gives you grist for the mill. Yeah, that was not a collective fee for dreaming. No. It really happened. Yeah, and there were like 2000 words about it up on fire and grass dot com, just in perpetuity. And Madden gave an interview with Ken Rosenthal seemingly about 5 minutes after he was fired, it seems like he was his first call was to Ken, but he had a Q&A here and one of the quotes raised some eyebrows, so Madden said he was very surprised to be fired. He also said it was liberating and Rosenthal said, why? Usually managers are crushed when this happens, Madden said it's been kind of difficult overall. I'm into analytics, but not to the point where everybody wants to shove it down your throat. Real baseball people have felt somewhat impacted by all of this. You're unable to just go to the ballpark and have some fun and play baseball. It's too much controlled by front offices these days. I actually talked to Perry, the angels GM about this. This isn't anything new. I told him that. I said, you just try to reduce the information you're giving, try to be aware of who's giving the information and really be aware of when it's time to stay out of the way. In general, the industry has gone too far in that direction, and that's part of the reason people aren't into our game as much as they have been. So there are a lot of things going on in that quote and maybe some aspects of what he's saying. We could find some common ground with if he is just saying that the use of sabermetrics and data and technology has propelled the Cayman some directions that are not always the best or have not been the most fan friendly. We could probably get on board with parts of that when he is talking about real baseball people and drawing a distinction between, I don't know, your old school baseball person who came up as a player or coach or whatever versus someone who has come into the game more recently. I don't think that's a great distinction to draw between real baseball people and not real baseball people who like numbers or whatever. So that seems kind of reactionary and overly old school. It's like you stick around long enough, you end up being the back in my day guy even if Joe Madden, you were like initially one of the faces of the safer Patrick movement in the duck out at least. And I don't know anything about how the angels have applied or communicated safer metric information for all I know they haven't done a great job at that. I don't know, maybe he has some legitimate gripes about how that team specifically has applied those things. And sure, there are people who probably feel like, yeah, it's less fun to have to look at these numbers. I just want to see the ball hit the ball or whatever and you do have to be conscious of certain players having that preference or even performing these days. And the idea that things are too much controlled by front offices these days, I guess that is not an uncommon or surprising sentiment for a manager at least a manager who's been around for a little while and granted came up with a pretty statistically oriented front office, but perhaps had a little more leeway back then than he has now. So I understand the sentiment. I guess the one thing I would most take objection with is just the real baseball people distinction, but it's interesting, like it's 2022, I don't want to say that the game has passed and by exactly, but he maybe doesn't like where the game has gone during his tenure as a major league manager..

"If Kurt Schilling gets in this year, it really bodes well for a guy like John Lester. Not necessarily in his first year eligibility, but much later, maybe towards the end of his eligibility. You got to witness this part of his game, which I found to be fascinating because I've just seen in you have seen a lot of players. You know, an issue pops up and they and I really don't mean this as a criticism. I mean it is an observation, a flaw will develop in a player and they melt. They don't know how to deal with it. I don't remember another situation comparable to what we saw with Jon Lester in that he clearly had this issue throwing to first base the industry, other teams began to focus on that and try to take advantage of it. And man, he battled. You know, he didn't ever clean it up. He never got past that, but between he and David Ross and Joe Madden and Anthony Rizzo, they battled. I thought that was a cool part of his career. It's a great example of what you said earlier about his toughness. He attacked that sort of with this mentality that it wasn't going to beat him. Okay, if he gave up the stone base, he was going to strand him at second base. But even better than that, buster, he found ways to keep that guy at first. Listen to these stolen base totals off the top of my head. When he came over to the cubs first time in the national league of league where you're going to run a little bit more, he gave up 44 stolen bases his first season with the cubs. It went from 44 to 28 to 19 to ten, four years later. That's what he gave up on the bases by the end of his run with the cubs. He figured out a way he varied his time to home plate. You're right, David Ross, Anthony Rizzo and later Wilson Contreras certainly helped him out that in that department. And then he was able to pick off I forget the cardinal he picked off and that really set the tone because he actually did throw over there and now everybody had it on tape that he was at least willing to do it and he really attacked it with that toughness. You mentioned, one other point I want to make regarding that towards the end with the cubs especially, his skills were eroding, right? He didn't have his fastball. His cutter wasn't even as good. He remade himself. He reinvented himself several different times. Even this last year with the nationals, a 5 O 5 ERA, and then he goes over to the Cardinals and has success there winning his 200th game. Several different times, he went into that video room and found his flaws and fixed himself to go on a little bit of a run. Then he might have that he might come back down to earth, figure some things out and go on that run again. So that's where that toughness came in. He didn't let those deficiencies beat him or define him late in his career. His career comes to an end in the midst of a labor stoppage, the owners locking out the players. You know, I wonder about this for John Lester in the same way that I wondered about it when Kyle Seager announced his retirement. If we had a normal off season, right? Where there was business taking place and contenders were filling spots and everybody knew for sure when spring training was going to open when the season was going to open. I wondered when Kyle Seager retired, you know what? I wonder if he would have continued playing, maybe not as a star player at the same salary, but if he would have continued playing if it was just a regular off season and he could just go about his business and stay in the same rhythm. John Lester is the same way. I mean, we saw at the end of last season with the Cardinals. He could be an effective pitcher. Yeah, I don't think so he was breaking down last year was the first full season in like a decade. He didn't reach 30 starts. He told me in the piece that I wrote, it was just getting harder and harder between starts and certainly in the off season to prepare for the regular season. I don't disagree with your sentiment. The game is right now unhealthy off the field, labor problems, and it's a little bit unhealthy on the field. We know it needs some changes in terms of the rules and the flow and the pace. So with those two things combined, I could see how there be some players a little down in the game might call quits. And John's case, I think it was more physical than anything. And he also offered this up to me that the pandemic opened his eyes, he's home with his family. He's enjoying his kids a little bit. So maybe without the pandemic, maybe a physically, he felt a little bit better at 38 years old. You might be right. But certainly the labor strife and the issues on the field in terms of just the flow of the game and everything. It certainly contributed to some people in their sort of negative feelings towards the even the game that they love and that they get paid a lot of money for..

"Of marketing, different colored uniforms, different names on the front different games on the back. Major League Baseball is involved with it. Certainly the NBA may be at the forefront of it. Yeah, they were, there's no doubt that there will be many fans who, look, with all the respect, I still called Boston garden, the Boston garden. There are many buildings that regardless of name change or sponsorship or minus back. You still refer to them as in fact, I heard people still refer to San Francisco's home ballpark as candlestick or as PAC bell or as AT&T. Sometimes they call it Verizon, even though it's never been named horizon. So all these parks with different names, you tend to follow back on the name that you're most familiar with, they will always be people who refer to Cleveland baseball team as the Indians. That's just that's just where we're at and where it's going to be. Yep, you're a 100% right. Let's talk about the MVP voting that was announced yesterday, Shohei Ohtani, look, we talked all summer about why he probably was going to win this award. Because as Joe Madden said, this is a performance. We might not see for another hundred years who knows going forward if he can stay healthy. So he wins, I wanted to talk to with you about Bryce Harper. Because to see his emotions after he won that award yesterday, I thought was really cool. You know, this is someone who's been in the public eye since he was 15 years old. I thought at 22 23 Carl that he had some kind of rough edges of a young person when he was with the nationals, and then what I've heard from all the Phillies people since he went to that franchise was this is a guy who gets it, right? He joined that franchise at massive contract 13 years and fully embraced everything that that team asked him to do. To become the face of the franchise. And so when I saw his reaction yesterday, I thought, you know what? That's really cool that a guy who absolutely was fully invested in all events gets paid off. And has it come to fruition? All of his efforts and way beyond what his OPS was for the Phillies. How about you? Yeah, I mean, look, you know, go back to when you were 22, go back to when I was 22. I didn't have rough edges. I was I could cut people with my edges. It was so bad. This is the benefit of being around these athletes for the majority of their playing careers, which needs a majority of their lives. You know, many of us are lucky enough to start this process, this journey with some of these kids when literally they are 12 years old. Let's look at Cody Bellinger, who sat on a set of baseball tonight and literally World Series when he was traveling. Cody Bellinger still has some rough edges, you know? There's no doubt about it. But would it shock and wouldn't surprise me if in three, four or 5 years, Cody Bellinger is an MVP and his persona is radically different than what I've seen at 12 and at 18 and a 21. Let's see where it goes, but it is the benefit of being a part of it. I want to spend an entire day. Before Bryce Harper, shooting a Jaguar commercial. And I know if I sat with furniture today and did the same thing, the conversations would be different. The attention to certain aspects of the day would be different. The use of his cell phone would be different. I imagine the people that he brought with him would be different. And again, this is maturation. It was my wife and I watched I played, I played the acceptance that he gave last night on my iPad. She was sitting on the other side and said, who is that? And I said, that's price. And she said, after listening to it, is he crying? I said, yeah, no, he's counting. He said, wow, it is amazing, you know, what happens to many men when they get married when they have children and again when they get older? So he's mature at least ripened in a sense, and you know, it's great to see. I think he deserves it. And he looks like he brought up Australian when somebody earns a contract like that. The responsibility is not solely your performance on the team. And many don't understand that. And some really struggle with it and when they don't perform on the field, they tend to regress into sort of a cave like mentality because I'm not doing what I'm paid to do and I'm not gonna listen, you try harder. It kind of spirals out of control. But there are, I think other obligations that come with being the highest paid player on the team, one of the highest paid players in the sport. And yeah, when he was with Washington, the maturity was sort of cunning when he signed that he was Philadelphia. It took another step. And yes, there is a part of being the face of the franchise. There is a responsibility to go over the minor league seals. And there are obligations you have within the community. And, you know, you just realize those, as you get older, and he's he's done a fabulous job and yesterday was, you know, the crescendo of that circle that he's, you know, he continued along. And I'm delighted for him as a person more than I am as a player. I think all the accolades he'll have as a player forever..

"And they're like nobody else's that strong to Can do something like that We got about two minutes left one. I ask each of you about what shohei ohtani said. Which i thought was fascinating melody. Where he didn't really say. I'm gonna test the market but it certainly in in basically indicating that he wants to win it felt like he was putting pressure on the angels buster. He said a lot in what he didn't say. Just i wanna win. And i'll leave it at that. I mean. i think. I'd rather get a text message that says. Hey we need to talk with. Rather than here's somebody like shohei ohtani say that about your organization and to me Use you set the alarm. are you gonna. Are you going to spend on guys and make sure that you absolutely give this man a competitive team next year to be on or you prepared that that he could possibly end up somewhere else and i think to. We have to look at the fact that the way he said that is is very carefully structured. Because the one thing. I've learned from having friends who have gone over and clean in japan and korea is how much respect you bring into the game and the way that you carry yourself on and off. The field matters every single day. And so that's just him being himself being respectful. He's not trying to be sly like. Put me under the radar. That's just not trying to be disrespectful the team but it's it's time for him to see october. Yeah i mean. I i love that. He said it first of all because melanie's pointed it you are. He's a man of few words. He's not going to go and bashing get emotional. I mean that culturally is just something when he is going to say something. It's going to be with purpose. It's gonna have meaning behind it and it wasn't just him. I mean joe madden talked about it. My child has said we've got to spend money this off season. I mean obviously the organization is looking. You know where they're at with some of the names and now our pulses money comes off the it's gonna be very interesting. What happens these extra months. But i mean even with shohei his honey what he said. I mean all of baseball wants this. I want him playing in october. We said about. Mike trout forever. But i love the fact that he said it. We've never heard mike trout. Say i get me on a team's going to win. I mean he goes about his business and he has confidence in where he's at. He's happy in playing the game in los angeles. You know for the angels and to me shohei otani has made a statement and i absolutely love it because this is a player that we need absolutely with all the history everything. The mvp the hill win this year. He needs to be playing next week. And he's not and i love. There's a fire inside of him. That is not content with that being. Okay and you write about pointing out trout. I hadn't thought of that trump probably after he read those quotes may have gone up tawny and give him a high five because he say loud. What you know. Mike probably feels alright Ten o'clock tomorrow eastern time padres dodgers. You guys will have fun together. Thanks for doing this. thanks thanks about. They're always fun. Bleacher.

"There is a natural letdown. We saw the letdown during this recent series. They were awful and they were not awful because they played this way all year. They were all because they realize what we're done. We're dead and you can see that so to me. There is the difference between those teams and teams like the royals and the pirates. And the orioles. They're tough because they've been playing the same level caliber quality all season. It hasn't been good enough to get into a playoff position. But it's good enough to beat these guys on any given day and you're looking at a team or teams that have been in it now. Fallen out of it. That's a little different for me. So i i'm not sure what the state of mind is going to be for the race when the yankees play them. I i know they're obviously in the playoffs. They saving guys You know integrity to game says but we've got to play everybody. We gotta try hard. I don't know if that's going to happen. So the red sox get in and i agree the other two i i. I don't know the answer. Blue reacts i have no idea. I think you're right about the mets. By the way it looked like watching those two games like they already act like college kids ready for spring break hundred percent they were in a bad place it but you know now look. The padres could end up in a bad place. Reds should end up in a in a mentally bad place the the phillies will will play important games here the rest of the way but you know there. There were those teams may. Maybe maybe the as there seems to be a lot of pride there but again you you gotta you gotta recognize that you take that. Knockout blow in. There is going to be a natural letdown. And then maybe you puff your chest out and try to finish strong. But the at the mets showed that natural letdown and we should mention the mariners been you know couple games behind the group of teams and we can't completely forget about them. I think oakland now it's going to be tough tough road for them to come back. Let's give it up golf. Clap to the chicago white sox. They took care of business. Think everybody expected that they would probably win the american league central this year and they did in a walk. How dangerous today on a scale of one to ten for you going to be in the playoffs it would. It would really depend on their pitching. I think though score the offense is is really dynamic. Terrific seven. They can play at ten. They can sometimes play at a five So i'd say somewhere right in between seven seven and a half There was a period this year. Where i would look at them like i like i had to raise in the astros. I thought they were all the same bubble. I think they have fallen a little bit. Last start was wasn't truly inspiring But they certainly have the ability. That's for dang sure to. You know to to to be as good as anybody in the league but i put them at a seven right now. We have talked a lot. About how the the dodgers trade for max scherzer and trade tournament be the best trade deadline trade ever in terms of the impact. You know what those guys have done for. The dodgers and i think we'd have to put it the other end of the scale. The white sox straight for craig kimbrel. Because i know i thought at the time they got him boy and established all star reliever perhaps a future hall of famer joining bullpen which was already good liam hendriks and quite frankly craig kimbrel has not been what they thought they were getting twenty games nineteen innings five point six eighty eight walks and thirty strikeouts tonight. Carl the whole time. I've wondered 'cause. I mean you and i talked to players Closed guys who pitched the ninth inning date. Just if they're put into a role whether or not a standing at the edge of the plank with an opportunity to save. They're just not the same craig. Kimbrel now allow runs and three of his last four outings to push that era close to six. What do you think about. It reminds me a little bit of some of the teams. Terry francona up Had when he was in boston and you looked at the lineup. And you said okay crawford. Carl crawford was great and and yet joe madden had said you know. Be careful here. There's there's some. There's some holes and i remember interviewing tito before a season started in saying. How do you linus group up. He kind of chuckled. Typical francona fashion. Last said i pick them out of a hat because they were so good and they didn't win When when kimball joy hendrix sure you know in a vacuum individually. They're they're both incredible. The bullpens look the bullpen. Has names that i do think in the next couple of years are going to be best. Most dominant bullpen. Maybe ever created with with crochet kopech. And they're they're fantastic but that idea of taking a closer and one of them is going gonna pitch us you know the as winning or the high leverage it look. It didn't work it. Could've it didn't so yeah i i would. I would put it on the other end. But i'm not necessarily sure i i. I don't know i blame the individual. Even though it's the individuals get the ball going out there on the bound again. I just fall back on. I remember the red sox had such a such a dynamic offense in a lineup. that didn't work because there was almost too much of a good thing. And it sounds counterintuitive but In a lot of ways. I'm not shocked. And one of the things we hear all the time about pictures and roles defined they. They like it. They're creatures of habit. They want to know that when the phone rings and the seventh inning. That's for me when it rings. The eighth inning brings ninth inning. I know i'm going in we kind of blue. What we blew that up. And i think that's you know. I think that's partly to blame. Although i don't i don't blame them for trion. Gosh it's a it's a heck of a heck of a roster and a bullpen with those names isn't it. Oh goodness you're one hundred percent right in terms of the arms in terms of the resumes and what they've done recently. I am going to be curious. Once the postseason starts kimbrell and look for labor. You know how relievers go. i mean. We're all this jabeen. Three weeks ago is considered to be huge disaster. Of course what now. everyone's like. Oh the older. All this is back. Kimbro could go out in the last ten days. Have three great outings and be all primed up and ready to go in the postseason. But if that doesn't happen. I am going to be curious to see how he's used by by tony. Larussa in the postseason Give me some thoughts in the cardinals. Who what a crazy comeback win yesterday. Against walking brewers they just keep rolling down a half dozen and goes because you are twice and wainwright who's been so good doesn't have a good game which will again lead but the cardinals have good news. All around they keep winning They're getting clarity back. Which is an enormous deal for them and and could be a game. Changer I'm shocked eduardo. Tim and i have done enough cardinals games to look at them and think there's no chance when we were doing their games. They were making the playoffs zero chance they had they had both arms coming in and hitting players consistently walking guys like she'll was was driven crazy. We had so many conversations with poor guy about the unpredictability of their bullpen. And he doesn't know what he's getting. These guys confessionals. We've got to trust them to throw strikes and they couldn't throw strikes. It's an amazing thing. It'll be fascinating to see once this Wants the wildcard game is played. You know they're gonna play dodgers or giants And i used to think there was. There was going to be a dodger giant first round division series because the wildcard winner is going to be one of those two teams. And then they're going to face the west winner i don't know how do you pick against the team. That's won twelve in a row and who knows how it ends as they as they finish this thing up. I mean they're going to win on. An eighteen game win streak. What are they going to go in on so It's it's startling to me. It is startling to me. But when you look back out of your like we'll are not us really good go schmitz really good. Molina's a great veteran Tyler nielsen snot out of the ball. And they're bullpens kind of figured it out. Yeah no no question about it. And i think about you know working with molina as has clearly helped john lester. You know he alina. You could see the response of the day when leicester one is two hundred game in the way that he greeted molina how he certainly has been helped out by that situation. I said the podcasts couple of times this week. Carl.

"What's right right. Let's start with clinton clinton one of the highlights to michael jordan's the last dance was dennis rodman telling the story about his forty eight hour vacation in vegas will. That story is going to be a scripted. Feature film called forty eight hours in vegas and we'll be executive produced by rodman himself. Is this a big deal or no deal. This is a big deal. And i have to tie something else into this as well because scott kathleen in an unbelievably timely maneuver tweeted a picture of him at a white party. We're like but this is like a for lack of a better term. Greg this is a rod mony in level white party. Look i'm serious about this. Like look at the picture that he posted. Scott's got the clean sort of buttoned-down going but there's a a mime slash hamilton character beside. This is unbelievable. i'm speechless. This is crazy reason. I sent that to you is because somebody said to me on twitter. This is at db seven nine. Eight seven said cap. Clinton didn't want to say it but all white parties are usually with black people. Just ask around. I'm like that. Why is that was part of. The reason i was asking is that was like i wonder if this is one of those transferable situations. 'cause most wide parties for me are black folks all boats as laura said. You know what i'm saying. But i was wondering what it would look like for you. Obviously it looks a little different but is still hilarious. Man. i'm stunned. That robin wasn't at your party. I'm sorry greg. Those things is actually happened to coincide totally fine. So big deal or no deal with rodman movie. It's a big deal to me. This is why i. I'll watch that what i'm saying i'm gonna go with no deal for this reason. Making a movie is a very difficult thing to do. Lots of people have great ideas for movies. But they're hard to make their hard to get studios to want. Make them to finance them. So when you tell me that it's going to be executive produced by robin and les. Dennis rodman is about the dump a bunch of his own money or perhaps raise a bunch of money to produce this film. I just don't know that it's a guarantee that it gets done. It sounds like a great idea. Like i'd be very very curious to see dennis. Rodman's interpretation of what those forty eight hours weren't vegas. I can't wait until the scene. Where jordan comes to his hotel room knocks on the door and he's trying to grab him to get him back to the team but question is will. It actually get made better as a tv show than it would as a movie like liquor miniseries. That'd be a good one mini series last dance in vegas zachary or maybe one of those netflix. Docs like the ones that me. Something something closer to that. You know what. I'm saying than just a feature film all right next. Please thank you all right cap mike. Trout hasn't played baseball since may seventeenth effort going on the injured list due to a right calf strain. He was only supposed to be out six. To eight weeks. It's been three months manager. Joe madden said about trout were probably getting closer to having to say something like not this year but he still wants to continue to continue to fight and we're going to honor. His wishes would shutting trout down. Now be a big deal or no deal no deal. I mean let's face it. You just mentioned it. He's been out for three months. Okay and the reality of the situation is is that the angels are about three or four games under five hundred. I don't have records sitting right in front of me. The fact of the matter is the guy who puts on the show right now for the angels is otani forty. Two home runs amazing and leading the entire league. So i would say that considering the fact that the angels aren't really going anywhere towards the postseason i'd say shut him down first of all but even if he's still trying to come back to me it's not a big deal because the angels are not headed towards the postseason but this is the whole reason why it is a big deal because once again the angels are not headed toward the postseason and he's up in limbo and you don't really know what's going on and you start to wonder. Is this ever gonna be right again. You know i'm not to say that some career is over but we just talked about a guy whose career definitively changed for a couple of seasons after an injury. Like what's going on here. You know. And i think that there's some level of i don't want to say like you owe the fans but like there's something to say for answering for like figuring out a plan that you actually have a couple of pieces for sure. This is a big deal. They showed him do right next. Clinton is the last ones time. Adam sandlers the king of netflix movies. And he's got another one coming out called hustle about him being a basketball coach that has to go overseas to recruit a new player. This will take him to majorca spain. I think said that right. And play opposite of one show. Hernan gomez of the memphis grizzlies when talking about hernan gomez sandler said hernan gomez acts better than me in every scene. It's just like dang. This guy is falling crying in the middle of a scene. Doing the right thing. Every jokey says i'm like he said it's smoother than i would have. Is this a big deal or no deal. It's no deal for me. But i just love the fact that adam sandler has found a way to monetize his hobbies in the form of films. This is great all this guy. Doing nigeria's playing pickup games. Good work at a you. I just want to go over to spain movie. You wanna talk about basketball. Yes what i wanna do at this point in my career. That's like that's like the only one of your president. That's actually a good. I'm not bad it's all right. I'm working on. Hey listen time for us to roll out. Angels yankees clinton. Yates phenomenal effort today. Lug today's broadcast. Greg bergman outrageous. Laura romo terrific to all the seven ten listeners. We're back tomorrow piece..

"Otani was there kind of bomb that it wasn't a year when we had international players to really see like the teams from japan. Interact with him. That's one of the delights. Usually seeing the sort of the players that have ties to international teams like hunt them down bond with them specifically. It's been really fun And then mike. Trout came despite not actually playing in the game at bloomfield. Everyone was really excited to see him. And then joe madden who has visited before when he was with the cubs clearly like loves the little league world series And was having a ball you know. I love that you have on the spreadsheet the The lists of the favourite actors favorite school subject favorite food. I would like to see that personally during a major league game just to know you know what adam sandler movie these players really like the best It might influence. You know which players i like. The best is see if i have some interest. The line One one thing that stood down. There's one kid in here. I think his name's eli bucko first of all great name. Eli and his favorite band. Is the counting crows. Were did this kid. Get out of a time capsule what what or maybe just tells you his his parents. This is light. A lot of counting crows right when we were growing up. Our parents exposed us to like the beatles now. These kids are young enough that their parents are generation to expose them to the counting crows. Don't let that sink in person. But yeah i would love to hear some of these factories i think you know. Mlb were always kind of wring our hands about like the face of baseball is not that well known and these guys. Are you know connecting with fans as much as they should be. I think just doing like a running list of like get to know you type questions like they do with these. Little leaguers would would go a long way towards that who who which. Mlb players favorite band is imagine dragons right now probably a lot of them which would be unfortunate for them anyway. Go on i was just gonna going through some by favorite interest that have come up Zaka goyo from hawaii. His dream job is to be a dermatologist. he's also very good at solving rubik's cubes sawyer. Watkins from louisiana. Who is the shortest player in the league. He's four foot five. He goes frog catching his dream. Job is to be hunting and fishing guide and he really likes jim carey. There's so there's so much fun stuff. They all love. Adam sandler that is sort of the most consistent thing. I also love how they ask. These kids were at the little league world series. What their favorites for to play his and they all just say baseball and it is such a waste of. I noticed that to favor favorite sport baseball. It's like why. Why are we asking. This question came come up with something else yet. Did they ever say anything else. I didn't actually see any other sports. Besides favorite sport to play baseball. I mean that would be a boss. Move though if a player was like. Yeah baseball's just kind of like a side hustle for me. I'm actually much better at basketball..

"Six Replacement as a header this year and two point. Six is a pitcher. So that's seven point two total and if we go to leaderboards look everybody who only does one thing or the other the most war for any hitter. Who's just a hitter is latte at five point three and the most for any pitcher who's just a pitcher is five point. Eight for gordon burns. So he is basically two wins above replacement ahead of anybody else in certainly ahead of lad one point nine basically. We'll call it too. And i think we've seen that on the field that i mean. He's really separated himself. Both of them went into a little bit of hitting slump. Sort of after the all star. Break but i think otani has managed to still hit these homerun. He's looking better. Lately and blood is still great players having a slam dunk. Mvp sees in and literally any other year. I mean we see these things happen ultimately. He's a great player. Who will have other seasons like this. But otani is just head and shoulders above and i was actually interested i mean he joe madden was asked game. Not about the mvp. Bit about the cy young. And i think that's maybe a little bit premature at this point but he is tied for the second best sierra since july. first. I mean he's become a really really great petra for them especially over the last month or so now. Correct me if i'm wrong. Teams generally speaking when they place a financial value on a player I i know it's been somewhere in the range of eight to nine million dollars per year so when we're talking about in we're in mid august again to repeat we're in mid august so according those numbers his value to the angels it'd be something in the range of fifty six to sixty million dollars right in that range. That sounds about right. Yeah i mean it's just insane and obviously we talked about contract talks in the decisions that they're going to have to make with ham and with getting other pitchers and everything else over the next few years and Yeah this season's gonna make a really tough to put those zeroes after those numbers. All right. tell me what you see in the red sox situation They lose to the yankees again. It's incredible how much ground they'd given up in such a short period of time Alex alexkor said yesterday the cost whoever's going to play in the field some more going forward First base sometimes. He's gonna be in the outfield as you. And i talked about the trade deadline sir no matter what choice. That alex makes swore in the lineup. He's got a diminishes defense. Ishwar replaced first-base. Something he's never done professionally. That's going to hurt the red sox at first base if he plays in the outfield. That's going to hurt them defensively because they're going to have the bench of a better defender It feels like he has a lot of imperfect choices at this point. It really does mean that. Entire you know conundrum with he and jd. Martinez you end up either way with someone who don't necessarily want the field probably pretty consistently in obviously schwab irs about that. I think they really need in there. I now i mean it feels like their offense over the last few games especially during this stretch has kind of turned into one of these they score via the homer and that's pretty much it sort of offences and that's not i mean it's working for the san francisco giants but generally. That's not where you want to be. You're trying to be competing. You know in this sort of realm. So i i just think it's a really tough spot but ultimately i just come back to the pitching i may i know christel came back and i know that he looks really great but generally this has been a lot of their pitchers sort of returning to the norm. I think some guys who probably over performed in the first few months. So i just don't know how you necessarily remedy that especially in this day age without waiver claims without the ability to really upgrade your roster at this point in the season i mean. They got chris sale back. That's pretty much the only upgrade that you can do at this point so during this stretch of the yankees are playing well and taking the last night. They took over the lead for the number. One wildcard wildcard spot in the american league. Everything's going well. Balu voight says alowed. You know what. I deserve to play as much as anthony. Rizzo which is very interesting. Aaron boone the yankees manager wound up talking with them It is going to be an issue going forward. And i know while you are buni someone. We both know well probably said all the right things to look behind the scenes. Hey get ready. Don't worry a were in there. I think in the end. He's want to plan reduced to every day. How to now. Yeah i mean. I don't see how it can't be anthony ariza every day. I mean i think the yankees fans probably enjoyed hearing that from voyage. I certainly commend the player for saying something like that. I mean he basically he did not play well for a lot of this year but he also was hurt for a lot of time and to basically lose his starting job because of this trade. I mean i understand. There's a lot of emotion that comes with that but he has played well certainly in the time. When brazil was on the cove injure less. But i don't see how you make that trade for resolution. It's anybody other than him. I mean maybe void can find a way to a couple of days here there becoming a pinch it specialists or something else. I am just not really sure but it doesn't really seem that he can be the starting first baseman going forward but he had a good point. I led the majors in home runs last year. You know i had a great year. You know he. He made good points there but unfortunately rizzo has been great for the team not unfortunately but unfortunately for him and void has struggled at times. So sierra yeah and i think also when when you look at the choice that aaron boone gonna make yeah he he's gonna rest giancarlo stanton i think. Probably more down the stretch Load management for guys like aaron judge but generally speaking is choice as you move forward. I think is whether or not play luc. Void or giancarlo. Stanton is d. h. Except on those rare days when he's gonna play stand in the outfield. And you know. And i know that the guy who's making thirty million dollars year is probably going to be in the lineup for sure not to mention Fan even taken the salary out of it. I mean that's why should have said d. h. Before but it feels like stanton should be dating for them pretty much every day and i know that they've played in the field a couple times and that's an ongoing conversation and as you were saying certainly with guys getting days off maybe he does get some days in the field there but it just really doesn't feel like their space for void on the team. I mean i. I thought the team was very lucky that they hadn't traded luke boy at the trade deadline after after they acquired. Anthony rizzo because then when rizzo got sick. They did need void. I mean that's kind of how i viewed that i think. Everybody thought that it might make sense for them to explore a trade if they had the time to since that wasn't on the actual trade deadline day. But you know i. I commend the player for running to play every day. I think that every fan wants to hear that. But i'm just not sure where those room well established on this podcast. You're a mets fan. So i had asked about this. Their owner steve cohen yesterday was busy on social media Before the mets game against the giants in writing a five game losing streak. Steve cohn tweeted out. It's hard to understand how professional hitters can be this unproductive. The best teams have a more disciplined approach. The slugging in opium numbers. Don't lie that. was it ninety nine later. In the day the mets wind to they're losing streak. And i kinda cringe. Personally when i saw some of the stories of the mets responded to their owner..

"Where do you see this division shaking out and if there is one weakness with the dodgers right now it kind of continues to be maybe that that closing bullpen kenley. Jansen some of those things that have happened in particular in games. Where do you think. The dodgers have to shore up everything to to try to repeat the season. Well yeah i'm with. You could use none reliever. I think again. I don't really ever. I mean they've talked about craig kimbrel. You know i think too steep of bryce but maybe they say you know what we're all in. We'll we'll put that payroll at two hundred eighty five million dollars and give more prospects or kimbrel got the nba prospect. Majority do so yeah. I think they You know killing jansen was having an all star first half you know is coupled here. I used to. I think they'd be in another arm that helped out. I mean they joe kelly. He's been know dependable when he's healthy but a why it's been Those guys haven't produced. So i'm with you. I think they gotta get more more labor. It they really want to rush up this thing down. All righty bob nightingale everybody from usa today talking to us all about the ongoing the last few days We'll have you back soon. Probably when all these trades become final and and we're rolling towards the end of the season bob. Thanks for joining us. Thank you guys. Bob nightingale everybody. Usa today major league baseball columnist I like bob's take it's kind of nonchalant like hey you know this is. This is going to be helpful but know you. You already have a pretty good idea where things are especially in the that that that That division is not though. I know i know boston does have a lead right now. But tampa is so strong right and now the blue jays add a big time pitcher and the yankees are buyers now. Even though like as bob pointed out the two players they added still strike out a lot but there are going to provide some more offense. So i thought the yankees would be on a reliever. They're they're chad's just been brutal this season. But it's definitely. I mean you said the stocks were kind of running away with it. I mean i like you here. I like hearing manager meal right. When i don't necessarily think that's the case. Be they still have. i think. Thirteen games left with tampa. They still have four games left for toronto. Six more left with the yankees like still a lot of baseball left to be played. So you know. I know it's july thirtieth but nolita save how. How incredible has it been this year. I don't know why if it's just it seems to be trending in this direction where you have multiple teams in the division like. There's always been a team that run away with it or maybe one more team that vise ford but this year there's there's there's like three and four teams in some divisions that are staying at the top and with games against their divisional rivals and opponents to finish out the season. I think it's gonna make for an incredibly exciting late summer. Run with with major league baseball. Yeah i think so too. There's just there's a lot of teams still alive. You know normally in major league baseball every year. There's just a handful of teams that you think and actually have a chance to win the world series. But it feels like there's no clear cut front runner. Boston has one of the best records in the a alba. My confident in the win. The world series. No definitely not. Houston's been awesome this year chicago. The white sox have a tremendous pitching staff. They have three top-flight top-flight flight guys at the top there. We were talking about it with tiny yesterday with joe madden. It's gonna be great. I'm excited for an august with. Nfl back and then august the pennant races. Really heating up It's gonna be a lot of fun. Tj the mets talking earlier. What are they are. They gonna make a move here. It seems like some of my College met fan. Friends are really wanting kris bryant. Yeah i think everybody wants kris bryant Kinda sat there. You know is very high night. I know you wanna keep them was in the draft last night break. Kept my on everything. Going on like i'm watching. The dodgers just like like fan those just add more stones to love these stones. And it's just like all right mets like what are we doing here and nothing but we'll see i mean there's still some time no ryan leaf does not want kris bryant and the mets better do something because the braves are making tons of move they just got eddie. Rosario from cleveland and now they get back adam devolve for miami and the braves of coming on strong the last couple of weeks. That's been holding off everybody all year though but and also we've suffered a lot of injury slate. I don't know that how many games we've played with our initial starting lineup We'll see they gotta do something. 'cause you're right. I am afraid of the braves. They always seem to have our number. They're they're making a run. Probably probably makes your your your better half pretty happy without their best player though with. It still sucks. See her does that. Injuries was kunia. Go down it's bad for business and you don't see acl injuries in baseball. It's not rare. Yeah it's not a common injury like the nfl or the nba. So yeah super. Tough one of the most exciting young players in baseball. And so hopefully he can bounce back and Come back next year. Be the player that we've we've come to see and appreciate. I'm just excited You know i live in the in the we all live in the nfl west footprint here with the dodgers and the padres and that kind of rivalry in the giants dodgers which has always been there and they're all sitting at the top and they're going to give it to play each other here a bunch over the next few weeks. Hopefully i can try to get away. Get get to see some of those games. Chavez ravine in the fall or late summer is incredibly fun place to be. It gets loud. The weather's great you know. You can indulge on just an a more absorbent amount of of of crap food like nachos and dodger dogs and now that you're this lean mean like fitness model in your forties do you. What are your cheat days. Look like and when you go to dodger. Stadium do you indulge hotdogs and the helmet nachos and the ice cream sundaes. Yeah yeah like you know once. I hit my goal weight like once..

"Sharp with its indicate. He doesn't hit on the field. Which i love it. it's one of the most overrated things we do on our game. Everybody wants to see this extra work on the field all the time. Especially this time of the year. I think that it contributes to getting better. There's always appointed diminishing returns city in and i don't like when guys get on weary. He does that. He doesn't teach those very lightly between starts it's not this elongated It's like when you go to the practice golf. You hit a couple of good shots it just keeps with swing poorly and then you stay there. Another half hour to try to swing better again. He knows what he's doing and he knows what he needs extra this or that and then he does but he has it he cannot handle it better. I'm telling. You cannot handle something better. And i love working with him in regard stalled this and believe me. I'm just i'm falling we from the sheer love of the game perspective joe joe madden from the los angels angels here on the rich eisen show from a sheer love of the game. You like watching him hitting or pitching. So i really enjoyed yet. That's and right now. I mentioned it last night so unusual for. They're gonna come after him hard every time. Obviously it's so unusual a hit or when he gets strike kid. Hey swing almost every time you need that it's full-fledged it is back well to the ballpark swing I mean hit this hard as they possibly can. This is not this. Check swing involvement It's incredible it's it's ability to get off his best laying on a on a pitch that he likes it in beyond that he's taking walks. She's able to shut it down when it's not a good pitch and that's what i'm saying status way. Don't don't give any thoughts right. Not let them just play. He's playing baseball. This was everybody should seek All of us that over think things at times he is. You really need to appreciate what he's doing how it's doing it because that's the way it should be pure joy for the game he's years he said he's a gym rat baseball player and he goes absolutely properly joe. It's the sound off the bat. The ball makes the one two nights ago it just sounded like a cannon no lie i told you what he hits them and they bring it up. We all brought it up. Yeah it was. it's a different sound. it's like an explosion. There's there's a few guys that are able to do that. And he's he's at the top of this. I guess he said more homeless. Four hundred fifty footer. Better this year The other one that said for sixty two which i still think is an artificial. Not i don't i don't care what they say. I mean that they would eventually land was beyond that. It's i. I don't i don't understand this stuff and they tell me it's accurate I don't always believe everything i hear. So it's it's incredible to watch it. It is catch. Yeah the exit velocity to. I mean in all your years in the scored. can you compare that sound to someone else. I mean obviously. Mike has done it over his career as well. But yep i'd be bonds when i saw bonds and griffey Coming up You know if you do that on occasion but Was with those guys on a daily basis. Like shohei it's different. It's different the homeland last night. You know ball a little bit down in a way and he just he literally flipped it and that was a bullet to write. I don't even know what that was off the bat philosophy Every you barrels it up man. It is going to get hit extremely hard number thirty seven last night. Till where's the rally. Monkey is in a cage behind her desk whereas they've been bringing up this little Curry dog at chipmunks starting the yellow the latter innings so. It's almost like a. I think it's a seventh inning kind of stretch. I'm not even sure the reason i remember. We brought the monkey could bear years ago. A lot of these guys stand it. We thought it was so weird awkward and and a lot of times. Just gotta wait for me to become cool. But i don't know the as the monkey. Just hold him back Maybe for the oakland back starts hike but guess other little gig dot going on philly olympic function. The crop yet you know really really was annoyed by the rally. Monkey darin erste. You really was for some reason. It really well. A lot bothered. Darren but really right. I said it not you joe. Great to have you. We it was just an. It's fun to be able to talk to you a little bit. Even just a little bit about two thousand and two. It was lightning in a bottle that six and fourteen start and that was really fun so really enjoying watching you manage now and have fun. I mean how do you not have fun with this guy. Absolutely i agree with you hundred percent. He should regardless of the shohei otani not we. We should all be very grateful for the opportunity to work in the major leagues We make it into life and death in it really. Should it truly be funny games. And that's what we got to really create throughout the entire industry both with the players and the fans watching us and I believe that one hundred percent and you know missy. No that's true buying point. Thanks for having me on today. It's always a pleasure squad to talk to you again. It's been a little bit too. Long will invest pistole rich. I'll pass it along. Thanks joe this job. Man of the la angels. And i. i did. Put you on the spot chris did. I wasn't expecting that because it's fun to bring you into the conversation and you are resident baseball. "Drill take like ten swings and it'd be ready to go but not the full bore batting practice on the field otani hoarding. Jeremy read his never taken batting practice. This year egos. He does a few flip drills he gets ready and then he just rakes against the best pitchers in the world. What do you think so. His regular season at bats are his batting practice. That's insane and when we see him hitting those home runs and everything that he does. It almost looks like as batting practice for. That's that's crazy. I mean the first thing that comes to mind. Actually when you say that is that is just how great joe madden has been as his manager for this year and managing the fact that he's pitching and hitting. I think we've talked about how that's a really good individual to be managing that and i can remember back to cubs as and probably in his raves. As as well. Joe madden is not the world's champion of batting practice. I know that he is pretty vocal about having his team and his guys not take it if they don't want to. I can remember that when the cubs are on a couple slumps. Post two sixteen everything else. So it's really interesting that this is happening under him. And i feel like there's something related there but imagine your first batting practice and the year is at course field in the homerun derby. I mean now. I'm a little bit stress for him like he's used to ninety five and now it's going to be lobbed in there i mean. I hope this doesn't affect his derby. Preparation which i know is not the immediate reaction here. But that's what i'm thinking about. I'm curious you know hoping to do more reporting this later today tomorrow. And i'm hoping to get more Specific information about what his derby preparations action going to be. I knew you would have fun with that. It's amazing how quickly polarized standings are going to be. I was looking at it This week earlier. In the week. I was thinking about the trademark. It and looking at how the nationally west seems have essentially made the wildcard accessible for the national league central nationally east teams the american league. We're starting to see some separation. Sarah with houston now five and a half games at oakland and the white sox taking advantage of this complete collapse by the cleveland indicates. Absolutely no we talked. Was that last week or earlier this week. I can't even remember about the national league and about trade options. And the fact that as you said i mean the highest playoff odds as of right now for any team. That isn't those rental any team that isn't currently in playoff position is the reds at seventeen point eight percent so it's a huge drop off right. Everybody else is in the eighties. Plus or seventy seventy nine plus But yeah in the american league now. Ninety six percent chance to make the playoffs right now. Ninety six percent chance to win the division. I know a lot of the indians issues are obviously crystallized with these seven innings. Being no hick yesterday but you know the truth is that they've been on this decline. I mean they were built on pitching and pitching has been heard. I don't think there's anyone you can blame. That's just you know what happened. They were never going to be a big offensive team. They've been a big offensive team in this entire run that they've been on and when shane beeper went down and everybody else in that rotation also you know they've dealt with injuries volume please and so on and so forth that it wasn't going to be sustainable and the astros i mean they have the best offense in are in in baseball. Excuse me and that's really come to late over last month or so and if you look at wait a runs created plus or anything else i mean. They are far in a way ahead of pretty much every team in everything except home runs. But they're hitting enough home runs. They're just not leaving the league in it. So i do think that that that distances them from the as so big question as you get closer to trade deadline is. What are the biggest needs for contenders. I'll give you three. You can add on to anything. That i met your. You can chime in with a couple of your own Needs among contenders. The dodgers think clearly need at starting pitcher clayton kershaw going on the list with an elbow inflammation. I don't know if that's just. The dodgers manage their pitchers knitting probably as much or more than any franchise in baseball. We don't know how serious is for kershaw but the fact is hirsch on the angeles with trevor. Bauer out indefinitely. And i'll be talking about his situation coming up with with the jesse. Rogers i think they need to go out and get somebody. The astros could use a late inning. Reliever is on it to me by executive earlier in the week how they are so good in so many respects but they could use that death and when you look at the red sox in this success date had it's been surprising. I do think that they're going to need reinforcement zoo. Go along with that pitching staff. We know the sale could come back. I think they could use a late inning. Reliever like craig kimbrel. Sarah what do you think about those or any others that come to mind. Absolutely i mean. I agree with all of those i mean. I think we've been thinking about the red sox. Pitching help needs even as the season started and they were off to the surprising. Start just because..

"Want is weird as it is to say you want him to leave because that means that he has had great success yeah and inevitably take your pick of whomever i mean. You could probably rattle off the ten schools. That would be paid him something that missouri has can't and also missouri just isn't and hasn't been yet. Yeah so that's but yeah. I hear what you're saying whereas if he's leaving that's giving mizzou g. that means mizzou did something. And that's the top spot would be if he left for not analysis you alabama kind of thing south carolina and saw the exactly. Yeah that's a lateral move with. Actually that's that's the kind of alec the detrimental whereas a forward move would be possibly think if you were so. This is the the stock buying things. I think people get confused when i start talking about buying stocks part of buying stocks. Also where they're priced. So i think if you ask the people on the sec network college football coach and the sec who you would buy right now. I think they would all say eli drink quits. They might go. What about nick. Sabin nick sabin is like you know if this were draftkings like fifteen thousand dollars on top of it five years from now nick saban's not coaching was likely. So you know no that's that's a projection of the value and it's also what you can acquire the asset for any lie. Drink wits. relatively speaking has a great deal of projected value and is relatively speaking in the sec. Inexpensive and And i think people see him for what he's doing on the recruiting trail which is a huge part of the job and also engaging fan base and going this guy is going to be a star that oh to me. That's the answer but with that is a missouri fan. And you're in the sec. I think we'd all acknowledge not in the top tier of the sec. Football programs would love to see somebody who would argue that point. But whatever maybe we'll chiming with gangster pete and we might be able to find that that That that's you know. That's that's the that's the cost of it but like you said it's the lateral move. It's the south carolina. That kind of thing i think in some way missouri fans would be. You know like you know like okay. Well shit we lost. Somebody went to alabama it again. i'm keep using alabama. I don't think that's georgia ellison kind of thing. Oh man yeah. I don't know about the ole miss thing. I don't know about the illness thing. I don't know about the illness thing but georgia lsu alabama four. Burn florida just get it. It's still going to smart but you get it and then you know. Inevitably these coaches are asked. What are you going to. you know. Be new units. Stay gonna stay. What can they say. They're always in that weird spot canton not. I mean they're in this tough spot. And if they're in a position to increase their income by like third or fifty percent and they're going to see if that's their gold coach. A place of that caliber with the history. Missouri can't do that now. You can create your own history. And i think that's what he's selling right now and i think that's why he's having the success that thing exactly that. Yeah you can just be a guy in tuscaloosa or a guy in gainesville guy and athens or yeah in baton rouge or a guy in college station but you can be a legend. Yeah you can. Because essentially what joe madden was selling to free agents in two thousand sixteen with the cubs or twenty fifteen with the cubs new era exactly and so i get that so i listen i wanna make it clear. I don't want to be right But i'm going to be right so you have to understand that so if anybody wants the action i just we just have to have an independent arbitrator Determine the wager. i will take all action on this. I guess i'll cap it at a certain half starting boy. I don't think we're gonna get to that elvis and get to that point. I need to have some liquidity. Can't be jokai. But i but but up to a certain point i really will take the action because as far as i'm concerned it's a sure thing but i just know missouri fans don't like to hear it and it's not coming from a place of like i don't want it. I want him to have success. I want him to have success. And i think there's a great chance based on the recruits. He's getting he's going to have success. The problem is when you start getting the caliber of recruits that he is getting to come to columbia missouri around the sec. Who's this guy. And then if he can get a signature win and there is a chance that they get out of september undefeated. Yep and now they're in the polls plus they got the recruiting thing and they're talking about them you know and you know you're getting high-profiled opportunities on sec. You know they're talking about you on finebaum the and he's the guy and inevitably not. Everybody can have a great year in the sec in particular the sec west tennessee can only hire so many football coaches so they try. So it's probably going to be the sec west. I suppose it could be clemson. Swinney went to tuscaloosa. Know if you wanna go to glamorous program that wouldn't be in the sec for day. i don't think he's going big ten I don't think he's going pac ten. No no he winco right. Isn't striking right exactly. So i'm trying to stem trying to stick and where i think the reasonable plays would be. and so. that's what i'm saying. I think but it's a cost you. It's the it's a problem you want to have. It's just a problem that you fear missouri. Fans were not freaking out about frank. Eighth going anywhere you know but after they got to. The elite eight with mike anderson was the suitcase mike anderson thing they were freaking out about quin snyder. You know But pinkel just always came off as the guy. He's just not going anywhere. And that's that's that's what his personality was. Andy wasn't going anywhere so there. It is wrapping up on that. We just talked sports. We really did talk sports awesome. We broke it down. "Which is why keira agata here. Your reaction to fernando taxis juniors pets last night. Oh my gosh. I mean that was just incredible. You know. i know that people point out. He's made a bunch of errors this year. Certainly kind of like two years ago but this is why he such an electric player no matter what the metrics say or anything else because he can do that and we've talked about. I feel like a lot since he got to the majors. How unique his body type is for his position. And i think you see that on display here and why that is such a helped him because he's kind of like basketball player almost the fact that he can jump up like that and there are plenty of shorts up to great defensive shortstops in the game today who are not built like that. Who just could not do something like that. It was amazing to watch all right. Let's play the numbers game number. Three number three is one sixteen. So speaking of fernando t-totes junior. He also crushed this home run last night and one hundred sixteen miles an hour off the bat. That's the hardest. Hit batted ball of his career. I know curse still pretty young right now but anything not just a home run. That is the hardest hit a baseball the entire time. He's been in the majors. He now is twenty. Seven home runs in sixty eight games played which is three more home runs through that many games than any other player age twenty two or younger in his first sixty games of the season and the only other player age twenty or younger with a lease. That many home runs in any sixty game span does not have to be started season. Was joe dimaggio in one thousand nine hundred ninety seven so you know we're talking about incredible defense these jumps everything else. We're comparing him to joe. Dimaggio i mean. It's just incredible. Incredible to watch number two number two is four so yesterday before the angels game joe madden said that the plan is for shohei ohtani to both hit and pitch in the all star game. We knew that he's starting d. H. but we didn't really know if he was definitively going to pay. I think we all were hoping that that would happen. And joe madden said. He and kevin cash workout. What inning otani is going to get but of course the moment. I see that i had to think okay. Well what if he gets a hit. What if he homers and he's also pitching so there have been four players to get an extra base hit in an all star game that they pitched in steve carlton in nineteen sixty nine. Johnny padres in nineteen sixty two bucky walters in one thousand nine hundred forty one and lawn warnke in nineteen thirty three carlton padres and walters hit doubles and hit a triple so nobody has hit a home run in all star game that they pitched in yet and i do feel like if anyone is going to do it is absolutely going to be shohei otani and the last player to even get any base hit in an all star game that they pitched him was charles nagy in nineteen ninety two and the last plate appearance for a pitcher. I was very curious about all this as you can tell bill. Plead appearance by pitcher and all star game. Was roy halladay in two thousand nine. He struck out against tim. Let's go number one number. One is one hundred seventy nine so we have jacob degrom pitching tonight on. Espn against the brewers. He's throwing a hundred and seventy nine pitches at least one hundred miles an hour this season the next most by a starter is twenty four by sandy al contra. He's also seventeen hundred mile. An hour pitches away of tying to twenty sixteen noah syndergaard for the most hundred mile an hour pitches by a starter in a single season in the pitch tracking error which has since two thousand eight and of course. I don't think he'll throw seventeen hundred mile. An hour pitches tonight but he could certainly do that over the next two or three starts which means he could be breaking that record right around the all star break and that is a season long record so sir before you go. I just had a conversation with tim. Purchased about what seems to be the conditions for a great buyer's market developing because of the national league. Standings are playing out. It looks like he had three teams from the nationally west. Make the playoffs. The giants dodgers the brewer separate themselves in the national league central in the playoff. Chances for the cubs cardinals. Braves reds nationals phillies. So low when. I sent out a tweet. This morning. There was some fan saying. Hey anything can happen. It's early in the season and my response was. Yeah i get that. That's a nice emotional feeling about it but that's not how front offices safe these days. Yeah i mean. I also think it's not that early anymore. I mean we're almost at the all star break. It's very different than you know. The nationals 1931. Is always going to be our go-to until the end of time because it's such recent reasons. They bias everything that was nineteen thirty one that wasn't eighty two or eighty three games in which is where most teams are at this point. And if you see a look at the playoff odds on fan graphs right now aside from the division leaders and those that entire top three in the nfl west there is no other team in the national league with a twenty percent chance to make the playoffs other than those top teams. The next highest is the reds nineteen point one percent in the braves fourteen percent. Everybody else is lower than that. So i mean you know again. These numbers can change but it is enough in the season that it would be pretty miraculous at this point. No doubt about it. All right sarah. I'll talk to you on thursday. Thanks for having me does.

Cubs extend their winning streak to 4 behind Alec Mills' 7 innings of 3-hit ball in a 2-0 victory over the Royals

"Baseball games last night. Cubs rolling along behind Alec Mills cheese Guy's been fabulous, gave up two runs to Nick Castano's In Cincinnati, and that was it seven shutout yesterday. Cubs went to nothing. And I loved again, David Ross. Not being wedded to. He's my closer. I got to give the ball the correct Kimbrough because I don't give it to Craig Kimbrel. What am I saying? David Ross absolutely says that a Joe Madden impression is that what you were doing yesterday, you say wasn't professional. And now that's the voice. I did not say He wasn't professional. Yes, you did. But that's the Joe Maddon voice you're using. Well, who is that? That was just mean. Maybe. Maybe in funny. I I'm just telling you Most managers would have gotten on paying him $68 million. That's my closer. I got to give him a baseball. What do you want me to do? I can only put out there who they give me. You know that voice that you do? It sounds like you're pinching your nose as you do the voice, But you're not. It's quite the skill. Isn't that how he sounds standing? Yeah. How do you do that? You're like, you know, like it Sounds like you're pinching your nose easily. I'm not pinching my nose. All I know is that gave me a 16 million Now they're closer. And I got important man. That's what you want me to do. What I like to do

Those are two teams loaded with talent and at times it felt playoff light because there were some great swings in the Game Schwarzer pretty well let center and then this terrible incident involving a two year old happens happens in the fourth inning. Now more is up too bad Albert Bell Morale who's been struggling for a while and I think he was just starting to find his footing On the season he's been really good for the better part of a month. Now pulled down the left field line. I just happened to be seeing exactly what happened. That moment I followed the ball off the crack of the bat. I saw the ball strike a fan. Can you hear this scream. You saw what was really chilling was how it went silent. You hear others around them. MM screaming I heard someone call for their dad. saw man run up the stairs clutching would I believed at the time was his daughter and the rest of his family scurry up the stairs with him and it was a tough moment as a reporter to watch that it had shaken everyone in that ballpark. Once we kind of understood that a young child had been struck with the foul ball and in the immediate aftermath. What did we know about the girl who was hit? She's you know a toddler a very young baby. There was very little information given about what happened to her. There are varying reports. It's about how she was doing in the media aftermath any updates that we've seen or heard have have kind of come through secondhand information. Why that isn't isn't nobody really knows but obviously it's their right to to have that privacy and and try and deal with the situation on their own? Do you remember where she was sitting. I'd say a little little past third base just beyond the dugout and that's about where the netting ends usually most ballparks the Nettie goes above the dugout all the way down to the edge of the dugout and the line drive just got cast that knitting. And can you just describe for people who just to visualize how you're getting a ninety mile an hour fastball. And and you're fouling that off. How quickly that's getting into the stands? That's a split second. It was one of those things it was a low line drive. Nepal can be you know. Crushed it a hundred route ten miles per hour if you take your eye off of it for a split second. It's impossible to get out of the way of a ball that's heading straight for you and then if it skips off a railing if it skips off seat the best athletes when it takes a bad hop can always feel it cleanly i. I can't imagine just someone sitting in that seat is going to be able to react properly and get out of the way of that ball and so it sounds like there are a couple of moments that really stuck with you from this incident and was Albert Al.. Moore's reaction after the the play. Yeah Albert told us after the game that he followed that ball and he saw it. Strike the girl immediately. He went to the ground over for more junior. saw that line drive to the crowd and that was not a good moment. This is gonNA take a little while to regroup. Just covered his face ace with his hands. He was shaken clearly. Stay down for a while. Jason Heyward he immediately came to Albert's side and kind of consoled him soon enough Joe Madden came to his side was whispering in his ear trying to calm him down letting him know that. This isn't his fault the game stop for for me. It seemed like a very long time. It was probably just a few minutes. It seemed like a really long time. And that's rare in baseball where you just stop a game like that for ball. Eventually he was consoled he came back up to the plate play restarted and it was one pitch to and to on our moral swings and misses for strike three. It wasn't close to the plate and he just flailed at it and then headed back to the dugout and then he tries to get an update on the girl's condition a half inning later. This was another moment that really I think shook everyone. He walked over to that side of the field. Right in front of of of the stands and started started talking to some fans and they pointed to a security guard the security guard it came over to him whispered something in his ears and he started to break down crying again. We do not have any update Albert visibly shaken. Eventually we learned that the child was at least talking and and awake when they left. I think that kind of comforted Albert. He was able to fully release all that emotion and that you know very visible reaction that no more had continued through the game obviously and then to the post game press conference and he was very he was still very shaken in in the clubhouse. It's one of those moments as a reporter where it's really tough you. You know you have to talk to the guy but it's also clear that he doesn't have a lot to say he's he's still shaken by it. As a survey hit the first person I locked eyes was hurt so obviously I want that to happen an intent for that to happen the rest was kind of a blur the rest of that bat. And I'm I'm I'm speechless and lost words. All he could think about was protecting that young girl. I WANNA put a letter on the host stadium

"Wonder if joe man's going to school the same way of all the other veteran managers in major league baseball always have decided they don't wanna pay the older guys they'd rather use young guys analytics they'd rather make out the lineups in the front office rather than let managers do it in the dugout. We saw dusty baker. We saw joe girardi. We saw a buck show walter walter. We saw john farrell. We saw all these old. Tom skippers get shuttled out and not to be seen again. Is this going to happen to joe. Madden madden says he remains optimistic about getting a new deal with the cubs but it is interesting that he went into the season without without having more than just this season on a contract despite the cubs all the success that he's had the oh epstein the president of baseball all operations says that <hes> he'll wait and see sit down at some point and they'll discuss the future of joe madden and let's face it unless they win a world series.
