"But you know, after mccarty gets the pliers from the surgeon. The only thing that they ever say, the only exchange they ever have about the whole situation. Mccarty turns to drapes in the car and says, I got this. I got you. And when I asked Darren mccarty, what he meant by that, he didn't even hesitate. He was like, I was going to beat Claude lemieux within an inch of his life. Yeah, Darren mccarty, who is the guy on stage, by the way, at the Fight Night at the Joe rewatch party, and by the way, we've not even gotten speaking of the levels here to Fight Night at the Joe yet. But Darren mccarty visually fled. I'm not a hockey nerd. Like you are, but I see that guy and I'm like, yeah, don't want to encounter that guy in any alleyway well lit or not. Yeah, I mean, you talk about just the quintessential red wing. Dear mccarty grew up 40 miles from Joe Louis arena, dreaming of being a red wing, and basically fought his way to the NHL. And he's on a line. Again, you can't get any more Motown than this. He's on a line with drapes that's called the grind line. And like I said, they're best Friends. They're just beavis and butt head. There are a couple of knuckleheads, and it's funny. They're called the grind line, which is basically the guys who do all the dirty work, right? They are the offensive linemen of hockey. But in Detroit, that was the highest compliment because what they realized was the high flying red wings could score like crazy. They had Hall of Famers up and down their roster. They had Steve eiseman and icon for their captain. What a shot by Steve virman. But what they really lacked was what the grindline brought, which was that toughness and that grit and that we will literally do anything to win. And so it only elevated the situation just elevated the grind line and players like drapes and mccarty to a whole new iconic status in Detroit. Yeah, another one of my favorite recurring themes in this story beyond there being levels of violence is that people tend to keep their promises. So when does this promise get fulfilled? Because these teams, as you had said earlier, they meet multiple times a year. And so the next season comes along and it's the regular season and are we getting the promise kept already or how does this play out? No, I mean, if you are a Hollywood script writer, right? You are just building the tension and building the tension because they face each other four times in the regular season. The first two times cloud lemieux is injured and doesn't play. The third time is in Colorado where the abs, it seems

"Yeah, Chris. That's what they all went. It's still not a wonderful story for the future of self-driving vehicles. I think it's interesting. This apple rumor is a rumor that will never die. But it's pretty clear that they are putting money into it. When are we getting the TV? That's what I come on. Always supposed to have the TV. Come on. The TV will be in the car. Well, that's the other story. Is everybody's trying and testing out if you're not driving? What are you going to do? Of course you're going to watch advertisements. What else would you do? So everybody's testing out all these all these screens in the car that with content advertising supported content. You wrote an interesting story, Chris about Google's what is this called the botan a box? Oh, yeah. So this is another kind of AI AI you could talk to. Well, this is a do it yourself one, apparently. It's no code. It's dragged, dragged down menus and. Line of business employees can build their own bots, you know? And that seems way out there for me. But this is the way of the future, I think, with the way customers will connect with companies and vice versa. They're going to be more and more of these bots, and Google's making it easier and easier to build these. And that's what that's all about. This is no code. This is that new no code low code stuff. I'm sure you're all over that Wesley. This is what do you think of no code low code? Yeah, it enables more people to participate. Which is great. Just like pivot tables is very low code, but it's still not necessarily accessible to everyone who does spreadsheets. So it's just making the level of entry a little bit lower. So people who are inclined to build this stuff can do it very interesting. I wonder how much of duplex is built into this and I'm sure that they learned a lot from that project. That's the voice thing that calls and makes a reservation at a restaurant for you. They announced that years a couple of years ago at Google IO. It's slowly inching out into the real world. I can my pixel 6 will now if I get put on hold monitor it and then tell me that, oh, there's somebody on the line for you. And I think there's some duplex built into this as well with navigating phone trees and stuff, so. It's slowly. It's just like self-driving cars. It's coming, but it's coming slower and in different ways than we might have expected. And that's why I think Apple getting into the car business is interesting because I think it's a hard thing to aim 5 years into the future. But after it's done that in the past and it's not the only project apple's working on. I think they're trying desperately to say what's next after the iPhone, including AR, self-driving vehicles. Joe Louis say a couple of weeks ago and it's Monday. I thought a pretty compelling piece saying the future for apple's health. That's where there's going to be billions of dollars. They're already in it with the Apple watch and the iPhone. And if they can come a car crash, should we call 9-1-1? Yeah. I just turned that on, by the way, my Google pixel has a feature that says if you're getting a car crash we'll call your wife. I'm just waiting. I'm just waiting. I'm going to run into the wall or something and it's going to call my wife saying your husband's dead. I really don't want to. Call my wife. Automatically. Based on something that I haven't chosen to do. That just feels like a restaurant. What could possibly go wrong? I think when you look at Apple, you know, one of the interesting questions for them is, you know, what's next? Is what's next? What is left to who's the game's guy that was like anywhere because there were no more lands left to conquer. That's right. It's like what else is there? The only thing that can move apple's market cap enough to generate return for shareholders is probably health or cars, or aviation, maybe, although it's not good margins, aviation, I don't think we're going to see an apple jet. But there is certainly doesn't seem to be much, you know, I joked about the Apple TV, but it's like, there's no margins in making a television and OEM in something and putting Apple software in it. They need an app. They add an apple printer. They used to. They was the first writer. We will have artificial intelligence living on Mars before we have a printer that reliably connects via air print. I'm positive of that. Alexander cried, he wept because there were no more lancet to come. That's the dude. There's the English.

But i'll lee wanted that same freedom that jack johnson dot dot got it the way jack johnson did but lee was for everybody. So we're we're not counting that. I just don't think anybody else comes close as heavyweight champion. I mean you've got the sluggers like the form in homes as and the lessons but was what he did with a little bit of brain a little bit now. "Word until i moved to detroit and That was a shock. And what was you know. Mohammed ali call them and uncle. Tom joe louis because he was beloved by white america joe. Louis was the most popular athey in the country. We talk about sports and race. And this is why joe louis to me is in. You can tell me from way off. Base could just be my white privilege but think about joe louis fighting max schmeling so maximum. They propped him up. It was real rocky four right. He was the arian sort of ample. I fight joe louis. Having lost it the only fight he'd ever lost then. Joe louis contrast mohammed ali who who duct duct the draft and obviously was a conscientious objector. And that was a different. It's it's interesting because it's so antithetical to what happened with joe louis. Second fight maximally. A lot of people don't know this. joe lewis. I think only a couple of weeks later was going into world war two. He wasn't exempt because he was a celebrity. Who was about to go into world war two. He's about to fight. The guy who hitler's praising max schmeling the example of airy strength that will defeat defeat the negro american back then and he got called by the president. Said you gotta you gotta win this one. You gotta win this one for us. It was the biggest sporting event in history at that point. Imagine the pressure on his shoulders. And he knocked out mac schmeling and all americans cheered and he was america's champion do have individual racists. Sure that's not a racist nation. I'm willing to go a step further. Because jesse owens just. I think in nineteen thirty six irwin olympics. He basically plays a similar role. Is joe louis dominates at the olympics in berlin and fun hitler becomes a national hero. Joe louis two years later thirty eight knocks out max belly national hero and what what people there's nuance to racism. My dad did not like white people. You could call him a racist and he wouldn't bat an eye he his life experienced things he experienced made him not like white people. My dad one of my favorite human beings to ever be created. Idolize my dad. I'd never in my life. Saw my dad acting a racist fashion towards white people and so there was something that trumped his racism in terms of his engagement. Sure and it was like 'cause like a lot of people they just want to be good people right more than they wanna be racist they want whatever interest whatever energy. Someone gave my dad. He gave them that same energy back. Yeah so if you greeted with respect he's gonna give you respect if you came into his bar. He's going to give you respect. He's a businessman. So i lived at different life than my dad. I played high school. Football with jeff jordan on an integrated high school team. That was nationally ranked. We won the state championship. I had plenty of white friends growing up my dad. never now. yeah he might privately say to me now. Everyone should dating a white woman. And bob la but when it came time to engaging interacting with any of my friends it was always respect. None of my friends ever felt his racism. Yeah it's because he wanted to be a good person and so we have this little silly belief that if someone says something racist there that explains all of their actions every by. Oh my god. He says something racist therefore every act he takes is a racist act or he. He's trying to advance. The cause of white people over black. People is just not true. "The opening of that movie no studio would have said i'm gonna make a movie about an old man as a main character. I i remember one of my first agents. In hollywood told me you can never have an old person as a main character. I remember that conversation because hollywood. Just never did it. Were ridiculed you know if you look at eddie murphy portraying all those characters that he does the old people coming to america. Joe louis fight ever member of those guys yes yeah. Old people are comedy. We don't show them as a main character in beauty and the beast. Even you know maurice her father. He's old but he's funny one. He's not so smart ryan old people are comedic fodder. They're not poignant since year characters that you're gonna make up. People relate to know pixar goes. Yeah well we'll just see about that. Yeah they made carl this old guy. The protagonists you. If you look at pixar movies by the way older main characters for the most part are never children you know. Toy story was about a woody is. This is a man right. These are only stories are from adult perspectives. They're much deeper. One of the things that i love. And i think there's a good message for your audiences that as we wake up and tell our we need to realize that each one of us is unique and because each one of us is unique. The first thing is we're not in competition with anybody because the only way you could be in competition with someone if the two of you of the same goal then you wanna win. Two runners running a marathon next to each other sprinting. They're all trying to achieve the exact same thing so of course they're in competition but because each one of us is unique. We must have a unique purpose. No two people are alike because we have a unique purpose in life then. I can't really being competition with anyone else. I did an episode of my podcast. Right talk about competition and i talk about you. Know people who go through life just focused on what other people are doing. And why can't you be happy if someone else's successful because at the end of the day there succession only motivate you to become more successful. Don't think that they're doing the job that you should have had. The episode is episode. Seventeen the envy of others and how we always turn our obsession with others into these into these things that we feel competitive with but at the end of the day we really need to be uniquely sincere ourselves. "Way you stands up to society. Lewis was too quiet. Lewis really did everything that the white establishment told him to do but you know he was a product of his times. that's what it was at At that time too he wouldn't have ever gotten a chance. He would have never gotten in the ring if he had had All these Braggadocio i mean. It works for elite. but it wasn't going to work at that time. So when you look at the ramifications of joe louis being champion and joe louis opening the door and what he did for his race for the sport for future champions. That still resonates. Today that's what it still carries today. We have about ninety seconds left. What do you want people to take away from. The book were in the ring. Well i think what i want people to you know. There's a lot in there. But i think that when given an equal playing field schmeling was supposed to be the arian super superior being right and he lost to louis. Louis wasn't supposed to be able to be a champion. Because he was a black man he shouldn't have been able to quote shouldn't have been able to beat the white man in the ring i think the takeaway on an even playing field everybody's equal. So you know you strip away all of the The shenanigans and when it comes down to one person against the other anything in life it's completely equal know one of the things. I'm interested in since you co authored. This book and i know you've done it with your wife before and other books. But are you both happy with the way. It came out because husband and wives tend to look at things a little bit differently. You know. it's so funny. People ask us a lot about working together. You know by the way. She's a red sox. Fan yankee fan amazing that we get along. Get along so we are. We are both happy with the way it came out. You know we work. She does majority of the research the majority of the writing but we both kind of do everything. The one thing where we really overlap is telling the story and we really work together. Roll up our sleeves. Tell this story. how's the book going to be structured. What's important to include. What are we not going to include. So we're both very happy with the way the story has been told in about thirty seconds. Is boxing missing stories. Like this. Well you know. I think i think it is and i think the reason why is because it in the thirties. In the mid twentieth century it was mainstream with the headlines. So it's hard to get the kind of For a boxing match to resonate today. The way it did back then because it was so widespread. You talking about you. Know filling yankee stadium. The old yankee stadium got eighty thousand. People there you know. Eighty million people listening on the radio. I mean the reach of a fight like that just doesn't happen today.
