They were about to start their second season with the lions and they have both earned rookie of the year honors the season before offensive and defensive of the year the rookies rookie in nineteen sixty. Seven was melpar limbaugh. What's the surprise of the season to everyone except the coaches who drafted him. Barney's playing golf at home apart. Golf course in detroit and if you know anything about detroit and the golf courses back then that that's where a lot of the black celebrities from mozart. Act joe louis so on and so forth and barney was a huge fan of marvin gaye. The attendant at the golf course so like marvin gaye lives right here. You should go introduce yourself. He not door. He didn't know what he was going to say to him. At that point and marvin revenue being annoy was actually happy to see him and barney. Two views like oh. I didn't even know you knew who i was and gave him like. Oh you're barney. He ran down his stats. Like it was like pro football reference dot com and in the late sixties. They have breakfast. "Little name. There have been various plans to redevelop. The nineteen seventeen structure started out as a library. Actually but it's still stands vacant. There's more detroit. History tied to this place to another fighter was inspired by lewis. Time their sugar ray robinson but well. That's a story for another day. As a young adult joe became an assembly line worker until he won an amateur boxing title and became a professional fighter with all that in the background. Let's return to the events that inspired the statue. In nineteen thirty six louis had suffered his first professional knockout in his loss against the german. Max schmeling and as such adolf. Hitler government used that victory for tons of propaganda about the superiority of the aryan race. Although schmeling himself was not a member of the nazi party and in fact use his position for leverage to free a number of jews in his country the german government took many steps to ensure his compliance like not allowing his family to travel with him but come nineteen thirty eight. The tables were about to turn in an epic battle set against the backdrop of hitler's march into austria. There were more than a million dollars in ticket sales. Ten million bucks in today's money and a record audience of seventy million people tuned. Their radio dials to listen to the fight. Where joe louis defeated schmila ally and down. The victory visibly clearly disproved nazi series. This was important as the idea of genetic. Racial superiority was a mainstream belief at that time with pseudo-scientists pushing it for fame and profit to give you an idea of how widespread this mess was. Henry ford himself subscribed to many of these ideas using his profits to fund the creation and distribution of white supremacists propaganda. Hitler even kept a portrait of ford awarded him. The reich's highest foreign honor in nineteen thirty eight and used his writings as inspiration for his speeches. So seeing and hearing the black joe lewis defeat. A white man in the boxing ring in front of so many people was a very big deal now back to jefferson and woodward the eight thousand pound twenty four foot long work by robert. Graham properly named the monument to joe. Louis was a gift from sports illustrated magazine. The city dedicated in nineteen eighty six. It cost three hundred fifty thousand dollars at the time and it was meant to commemorate that fight which was an immense moral victory for our country in one of our darkest times. The fight also minted pugilist. Joe louis into who. Some believed to be the first african american national hero. Lewis had died a few years earlier in nineteen eighty-one his son. Joe louis junior told an espn writer. Many years later what. My father did was enabled white america to think of him as an american. Not as a black by winning. He became white. America's first black hero for context the president at the time franklin delano roosevelt reportedly said joe. We need muscles like yours to beat the nazis and this statue shows that raw power graham worked in almost complete. Secrecy will creating his work in california. One thing to note is that corporate commission art. Which well this was was a very big deal in the nineteen eighties. And this piece has a modern sensibility. Which were probably influences in the design which has proven very controversial over the years. Also one of the reasons. The fist faces towards canada is to show. America fought for democracy outside of its borders during world war. Two you know in a different city or with different mayor other than the lightning. Rod coleman a young at the time. It's very possible. The joe louis fist wouldn't have become to some the statuary embodiment of the racial politics challenging our region and city swell as our nation. Maybe it's because some of us are of a different generation or another mindset that we think differently after all putting people in power focused on dividing us instead of bringing us together hasn't produced the best results around here and to truly bring us together and to heal. We need to acknowledge the truth. The truth of our history the truth of how we got here. The definition of insanity is trying the same thing over and over again and expecting a different outcome. This story and this statue is bigger than ourselves. Our petty differences or our region. The true history behind the joe. Louis fist the monument. Joe louis will always represent freedom. America and the tireless fight for equality around the world. Well i hope that you got something out of that. Final story for twenty twenty. I know i did putting it together. Well thanks so much seriously. Thanks so much to all of our listeners are patriotic members. I mean it is a magical thing that this very podcast can exist every day in your podcast feeds and we're just all very appreciative. Well here's to twenty twenty one being far better than twenty twenty. I look forward to talking to you in january. Thank you so much for everything. I'm jay baer says to care of each other. And i'll see you next year..

"A thousand times by guys at bars and angry commenters online. The one thing. That joe louis fist is not about is the divide between the city and suburbs in fact after my work on this. It's more than a monument to one of the greatest boxers. The world has known. I think it's one of the most patriotic statues in america. We're going to hop around a bit. But let's i turn the calendar back to nineteen thirty. six adolf. Hitler was quickly gaining power. In europe the nazi regime was spewing hatred around the world part of that misinformation campaign was to rise up quote racially perfect unquote athletes to show the quote. Superiority unquote of the aryan race boxer. Max schmeling became for a while his poster boy for this but the motor city had an answer in joe. Louis but who was joseph louis barrault. He wasn't born here. That was near lafayette alabama nineteen fourteen but his family arrived twelve years later during the gogo times. Been nineteen twenties in one thousand. Nine hundred ninety six detroit was booming. The skyline was very different. That's the same year. The tall part of the book tower on washington boulevard was freshly complete iconic structures. We see today like the guardian building and the scott tower had not been built instead of the bad detroit. Lions we had the final season of the terrible detroit panthers in the nfl. The city was comfortably more than a million people strong. It'd be like today. If the entirety of oakland county lived only in the city limits in fact those city limits. We know today. Only it'd been just established that year in nineteen twenty six is when the final bits of the west side and the east side were annexed in detroit of a century ago was a very different place in truth outside of the street names and a couple select neighborhoods it be almost unrecognizable to the people who live in metro detroit. Today joseph louis barrow spent his teenage years growing up in the city's black bottom neighborhood a segregated area that was mostly and very intentionally erased by the construction of three seventy five and what we call lafayette park today. At the time black people could only legally live in certain areas of town. And even then if you step too far out a mob would pull your front porch off as a warning or worse but one building stands today albeit in ruins. Lewis spent a lot of time and learn boxing at the brewster recreation center. Some real audio clips of the now joe. Louis.

Party, drinks or even a happy hour drink like the man cave. Happy are doing right now, but what is in a Bourbon Sidecar? Bourbon sidecar crap on the table. Here's what does the Bourbon replacing is what I'd like to ask. Oh, I. Don't know and actually replacing the brandy Okay, instead usually brandy. Usually it's brain. Okay putting the SIDECAR, but we're going to replace that with Bourbon, said okay like. Citrus forward with the spicy. Whiskey finishes what we're going for. Okay, so you start with your two ounces of your Bourbon whiskey. My friend who houses of Joe. Did you get to play bartender again? Oh, right so two ounces. What's up Mr Heavy poor work? For the deck there. One for the home to yeah foreign little out for the home. So he's got your Bourbon in there, and we the Joe Louis Bourbon that so at the Bourbon that we're going with tonight's. We're going with on tasting Tuesday every Tuesday. You got the con- Cointreau contro. Contro one hundred. One else. Let's see there. You Go, so it it's it's an orange here, is it? Warns Liqueur contro one ounce of their. Then you're going to grab that lemon juice and sitting right next to my friend and A. Half ounce. Of the lemon juice. Lemon juice. And we'RE GONNA. Go actually after you do that. We're GONNA. Go right back to what we did before. What the Maple Syrup simple a simple says simple syrup of one teaspoon of the simple syrup. Simple, so you can make your own simple syrup by. Reducing sugar sugar. Or you can be a lazy bum like me and buy some at the. Grocery, store. One Teaspoon. A quarter, of A. QUARTER OF A tablespoon. But then you can, actually, if you WANNA Garner, she can use a lemon twist or lemon peel. If you WANNA do a garnish on your Bourbon sidecar. But, it's not absolutely necessary. So you plays all the gradients in the cocktail. Shaker with a handful of ice so after you get the simple syrup in there. We WanNA. Throw your ice in the Shaker because you always want to shake available for the summertime. That's where summertime tends to lead to is that shakur usage. And then you want to shape ice cubes and shake till it's cold, so shake what your Mama gave you. Until it's nice and chilly. All right now hanging in there Michael. Straight up straight up because yeah, because well one your children and you shouldn't be drinking in two. Yeah just and plus Matthew and I are not listless. disclaim this as well. We are not bartenders. Oh, we! We could pretend to be bartenders. We're not bartenders new, so, but we are going to be mixing up some. Tells what happens, you play you play bartenders on. On TV well, here's the thing. Home and I'm playing. Bartender pours tend to be about three times more than what he would actually get when you're out in public at a bar, so that's just me as a bartender at home, so there's still to dear sitting in my yard. The really yeah, he's a big dumb dog ran over there. It's amazing. My Yard is cookie. I'm right on a main road. You go that way forty five mile now street, but one hundred yards that way. And then I got Bambi and. You siblings over there. I've got wildlife year two and I'm in the city, but. Of domesticated life. So but Joe Louis Bourbon and we wanted to cool off and sometimes bourbon. People don't consider Bourbon a summer drink and They're wrong very wrong. There are a lot of summertime urban traditions that happen, and we want to kind of talk about what some of those traditional drinks are right so so Matt what I sent you. I sent Ya. I sent you an email with some some lists of summer cocktails prepared with bourbons and I have like I said I have a whole range shenanigans here on the table. We're going to try to see what he can actually make. On the summer, Bourbon, drink itself so the best Bourbon Sour. Some folks would think they think Bourbon spies, but there's sometimes you get a bit of the sourness, too, so we're going to try to bring that sourness out potentially with the best best bourbon sour drink out there. Jesus odd one of one of these things I think it's going to need cherries. Jamie I was going to say. At can. FREEZING UP This melody is Mr Belvedere can use. Boulevard cocktail. Yeah, well, this is something that I would actually like to try because it actually looks really interesting, so. You get. The boulevard year. Would you say that bullet here? Is that a Mr Belvedere? Show from the eighties. I it's got a red jewel toned, makes it makes it really stunning the actual on the Rony? It's essentially in a Gurney made with whiskey instead of GIN. Have Campari. That's alright. I do I have some. Don't is that was? Reading. that. What's what are the ingredients in it? Let's see. Let's see here. It's got get recipe. Oh Yeah here we go. Yeah and it goes a little bit more detail as it does. 'cause we got so. We got some red wine. I got some sweet red. vermouth yeah right Maple Syrup. I got pomegranate juice I got honey I got cherries. I got lemons. I got lemon juice. I got lemons. Me! PORT MIME juice so here you take, hold out your glass. Contra and we got Joe Lewis Cover Bourbon jail. Alright, so and then some Soda Water Tonic Water, so we got the bourbon done the Bourbon Down Right? So what's in the? What's in this? It's it's a Bourbon Whiskey, riot, Bourbon, whiskey, sweet, tooth and Campari. All right. So would that someone we because. I don't I didn't get comparing, couldn't they didn't have it? We'll have to skip that one, so, but this is. It looks really good. So. That's a fun summer recipe for your Bourbon. All right. Let's go to the next one. What's the what's the next one? New York our a New York's our okay. It's sometimes they do egg whites with the Newark and that freaks me out. You can avoid of the Dan wise freaked me out, so, but this recipe actually has the egg whites as an afterthought I. think what's The New York's our that see here. You got your Bourbon Whiskey of course As high quality as possible for it so jail be works just fine. I got your lemon juice and lemon juice. Simple Syrup Maple Syrup were more about maple, syrup and then red wine. Jamie put out the red wine and I was curious to why. I did not know this all right. I'm an aggressive. Float so man! I'm GonNa Grab Corkscrew, so we can open this red wine before and then. Yes so so to go walk through the rest. We talk about what it talks about. Okay. So. How'd that new? York's our? It's it's all about the perfect player in it, so it looks a little showy. The York's our actually easy to make you just need to know a little trick about making that beautiful red wine layer. That's the whole point of the New York our itself so there you have to have your Shaker. Combine the Bourbon Lemon juice the syrup na cocktail, and then shake and then. Until cold, so you want to have the ice cubes and we have the Ice Cubes here.

Hey, like hey, anger corrosiveness like all this like it's an infection in like that's that should be the. A A famous old Japanese general that saved. Tokugawa Yasu. "Have not gotten. An income their their prospects are are a weekend by the fact that the businesses have been closed at the economic prospects if you're a student. Are Right now very nebulous and so there are street saying, help me, what can I. Do you know it's not that they they they they they want. To be rich, they WANNA survive. They WanNa live, and they WANNA be. They want to be happy. They want to hope for the future, and so the flip side of that is, we have covert nineteen. We have people who have been shut in looking for homes for the future, and it almost seems as though it was. It's a it's a Redo of the sixties. In terms of the the national strife there to feel the fear that we're feeling need the the hopelessness that feeling which is driven people out of the street. I was talking to my wife right now. In New York tens of thousands of people in the street. We looked each other. What else is there? What else is there for them to do? You know they're not going to sit at home under the circumstances because they're in pain and so You have athletes who are really. And making. It making us feel if I talk too much. Let me know because I know we're loving it loving it loving willing. Athletes who? Happy you can. Athletes who who really are understanding this a similar in spirit of Joe Louis? Kareem Abdul Jabbar a couple of days ago, wrote this excellent. Explanation in New York Times in terms of how he sees it is. This is what we're seeing. People who are pushed to the edge and pushed to the edge, not only the fact that. Black men and women are dying at the hands of police, but also we have this great economic disparity We are gone through a two. Of these are Belau bills, and they're still people who have not seen any help that and an frustrated and so they're out on the street Magic Johnson. On CNN. To to to on CNN in the past week, he talked about how he has to still have conversations with his son about the talk, and that that that is so heartbreaking, because by talk Jay when I was five years old. and I was I was traveling. Through the south with my grandmother and it was She was shooting. Really concern about the fact that that you know young young boys at that time in the south were vulnerable. And and she had to have that talk with me and I'm five I'm looking at here. Know what are you talking about so it became. It's it's something that even even sixty five years ago when I was a bait. Talk is still had by. Black families to their young black men, and so that's the type of frustration that we're feeling these gauge. But then you have inspirational figures you know and speak inspirational biggest sports Joe Louis, being among them in a where he was as I mentioned an an accidental civil rights leader. You know With the his is A. Battle to to get recognition for African American athletes, but he was able to do it. Just like boxing is an individual sport. He was able to individually change the calculus in terms of how young black men were viewed in the boxing world, so that they had a sense of self determination and Strang's that were forwarded by his good graces, and is ability to transform mine through his through through his skills. Rapper Cigar there as well and you know with the Bourbon. Let's let's sweetness to elect the Joe. Louis Bourbon does for me. I think personally a lighter cigar lighter. Rapper would be better than that. I agree with you. I I'm not well-versed yet on cigars. It's kind of a new thing for me but I've really been enjoying that whole side of and and after two years Joe after two years of doing this. That's all I've learned so far about cigars. You're a good company. I've I've been different. The end of the thing in the bourbons lately. I like that. That's nice it's still how do you? How do you deal with smoking? Cigars having amazing lung capacity if I smoke a cigar before I have to perform. I'm in trouble so I never do that. But I will have one once or twice a week after performance. It really doesn't especially if the sing. It really does affect What's going on in here? You know so I can't I can't really do it. I just enjoy at once in a while but I I don't know I don't really inhale it too much so I don't know it doesn't really miss my lungs but it can get my throat and I can't even think that because you're not just the saying one of the things that those of us who know you that you're famous for is the world holding the world's longest note vocally and I don't know where the hell that air air hoses coming in your behind to keep the lungs full but somewhere it's gotta be. I've been looking for that trick for years figuring out how here's the air comes. I don't know how I can. I don't know why I can do that. You know with the trumpet. There's something called circular breathing. And it's it's it's as you playing the trumpet you put in your cheeks and then hold the cheap menu. Use the muscles to push the air out as you it. You sneak a quick wrestling with your nose. Show John.

He's like two things. It's a good way to lose arm. I'm not done with that drink and the other one was you know the best way to start off a really good. Martini is five hundred. Pounds of crushed. Ice Dance do metric. Sorry so I had having order excellent. I had some logic. Craig in my glass earlier today. I was doing a little whiskey. When with the Elijah Craig Met Fox? Well as the as the beard and hair would indicate. I'm very old school so I've got I've got a I've got a bottle of maker's with me and there's a there's a his and I'm drinking it but there's a there's a history to it is when I was in in college I dated a woman from Louisville and I was. I was taught about Bourbon by her father and even even got to go to the makers still all right so so that that instead. It's still a certain loyalty not that. I'm not going to be picking up some Joe Louis unless it happens to appear at my door at some point. Be addressed can be provided. After the do now so I do know people so they can. I think between our arms were six feet apart so I like. I like the story every every cocktails now I got. I got school nicely in Kentucky. This is the same guy who wanted to. Who brought a rifle to our college after we broke up. But you know he did teach me about Bourbon. Perfect the rifle anyway. Oh yes this kind of thing they do is Jason. You grew up in Kentucky. Yes yes one race. How Far Away from me hers were You I'm about our maker's mark. I'm actually I actually am ambassador for life for Baker's Mark Rob Samuels was against Surrey. "And providing Absolu- some mentoring opportunities and so The local chapters receive some some benefit from that as well and that's really been really defining part of this brand development. Is that you know there's some. There's an incredibly rich historic story that needs to be told just for new generation to understand who this man was. The second piece of it was beyond the brand. What's in the bottle really is a good product and it needs to represent something of integrity and all that and then there's the commitment to the give bath the cause and things we're talking about as well as then the sports marketing which is the idea that introducing this first to People in the boxing community almost respect as a sign of respect for Joe. Lewis meant and did for boxing. If not all Americans so it's really kind of it's been a heady experience in many ways and it's gratifying to see it from what I understand. Joe Louis and Charles is GONNA come in. Hopefully maybe you got some knowledge on this one from what I understand. The Joe Louis won something called the silver or a silver level or the silver award And and you guys getting involved with The golden gloves That level or that award was gone for a while and they brought it back with you guys in naming it for for Joe Lewis Trials. What did it because Joe Louis fought in the in the golden gloves right in back in and thirty three thirty four something like that you have beat on. Do you have a beat on on that part of Joe's history? Yeah I mean the gold gloves. Really how how he made his. I mean that's how you know. That's how a lot of amateur started made all if not most They like I forget. I forgot if it was off the time I had if it was one thousand nine hundred eighty four or nineteen thirty three but the the big thing was he wanted Detroit old gloves which was huge and then and then he went to Chicago for the one the big one was the Chicago Volk Gloves. And you won that. That's what really started. The you know. Propelled him what like certain. Really landing him The the The the the trainers and everything they start giving you know. Put money in them because they say that when he first started he was he was training on a diet of hot dogs and ice cream and then once he started getting once he started getting a real professional. You'll you'll backers finance years. That's when they were like no more ice cream and thought that's the big. That's the big thing. It's a huge difference and expect you know on in originally you know. He came up to a booster recreation in so he was. You know so. He's training in a room with two hundred other boxers Where it's like you just trying to try to you. Know get his hands on a bag workout in but then once you just shut up a lamb you such a huge difference to be able to have your own gym and you're like trainers that have been doing it for forever So it's it's You know Y- that's that's really. That's that's what catapulted him from meal the amateurism to the Professional. You know course we go. Pro is when everything starts the strict make money and all that some by the way Joe Joe has called me and texted me that he's trying to log in right now so I don't I'll kick any moment. He will arrive hopefully otherwise I will call him on the phone and hold up which we've done before we remember doing so the the the golden glove really. It's it's quite quite the turning point for him. That's that's really neat. That the there's support for it and they've bringing back Michael Dino which award. I'm talking about that. You guys helped The Joe Louis helped bring Bourbon back because p Peter was talking about talking about the you tell them what I was talking about the other day the silver medal. Yeah the brutal or never the poem in the in the boxing golden glove competition itself. Peter Peter had the story. He was telling me about it. I I I do recall it. It's not It's not top of mine sheriff. We know about the Congressional Medal of Freedom Right which is a bronze medal that he was awarded posthumously which was the original which have regular because I have one of the earth. This is what the original paint had was. And there's about About sixty cases so maybe three hundred something bottles throughout Michigan. That had this all the everything else has a new one. Which was the square that has the champ is back. But that medal was awarded in Nineteen eighty-one possumus possibly can't say that too much permanent. Why NEW HAVE A story? I do have a quick story about something. Joe Kinda did lead to which I think an interesting thing that never gets talked about like never like like this is crazy how it kind of comes up in this regard. 'cause. I don't think I've ever even really talked about it anywhere else but You'll the Joe. Joe Louis had such an impact at that time that like everybody. Every kid wanted to become a boxer. Like didn't even matter. The colors black white didn't matter. Boxing was the biggest thing especially in Detroit like amateur. Boxing was everywhere. There was a writer that made a comment. That like you walked on the screen. And he's right and it was like you get kinda nervous because Ucla kids like practicing boxing with each other. You know. They're all play boxing everywhere. And so one of the big newspapers in in Detroit that time in addition to the to the free will the big newspaper in addition to the Detroit News Detroit. Free Press was the Detroit Times which is just. It's it's my favorite newspaper of All Time. In one of the things that they did was they were always cre- they were rather than just like covered the event they would actually create their own events so that they would have the only exclusive down to cover it and so one of the one of the things that they ended up creating was an amateur boxing tournament in Detroit called the diamond belt buckle tournament in Salt Lake in suicide every age category like every age. I forgot how young it started but there was a whole like all these age groups and then there was And then there was like you know heavyweight flyweight and all that go way down so it was sort of it was created is like a is a wider like amateur thing. That was it wasn't as serious as the as the gold gloves. Gold gloves were the signature event but the but the diamond belt walk was just. I just love the idea. It's almost like a precursor the WWe humanity winning. You know winning that tournament no matter what age you are but you gotta diamond belt. Buckle says Troy Times champion and you get to walk into school wearing the diamond belt buckle. I decided it was a really cool thing. You know that all. That's that's cool that's cool. That's if I may. I may give anything I would I would. I don't never seen one in person. I've always seen like newspaper photos of it. So if anybody like listening to this or anybody knows anybody that's got a Detroit Times. Diamond Belt Buckle Udal from grandfather. Something I would love to see one in person that's-that's Charles around man. He's got these stories. He knows crap that nobody knows about. I just love. I don't know where you find information on that other where you know straight out of the newspapers so question for question for everybody. What are some of the things? What is the most surprising or inspirational piece of history? That you learned about Joe Louis and soft while you're doing getting ready to put to launch the Bourbon or partnering with Joe Louis. Urban or learning about the history of some of the most surprising or inspirational stories that you learn about Joe Louis. There's too many will first of all. There's the there's the the story that you know He. There's there's a sad broke after the story. Which is the you know the tax bill the the money that the U s pressure went after him for it was he was very generous. He gave away a lot of money to charity to people to help people and to the point where you know you may not have had the record keeping as tight as you know the accountants would like it and that dog until the end of his days and so you know but yet he persevered right yet. He did whatever he had to do. Which included you know obviously some decisions like the Rocky Marciano fight which was ended up being a career. You know embarrassment you know to the fact that he sucked it up and he lived in Caesar's palace for over a decade and speaking of crappy. Grandpa that I'm Ta- I'm talking about. I'm talking about your this. Here's Joe Joe. I'm talking about Your Dad. Your Dad Oh that's about time you got here where we're tired of anyway but we were just sharing stories and just you can really speak to this. Because you live there you lived in Caesar's palace yet right. You're the running of the place to didn't you I I did. I did the last well. He just left actually zones near the president. He said I was there. Joe Good in the room with us. WE GOT. Jeffrey WHO's In charge of the in Michael. They're they're in charge of the the the marketing and getting the bottles into stores around the nation in Detroit And also on the line with us is Charles Charles Ableson. He wrote a book called Detroit. City a champions and it's all about that nineteen thirty five year in Detroit where just this swell of championships And Your Dad was such a a major part of that catalyst which made Detroit the Sports City in turn Detroit people into the Detroit fans in the sports fanatics that they are as I was just dying to get you and Charles in a in a room together because he's such a great storyteller and I would just hearing you share stories about you know being in the casino in up in the rafters and things I just. I just love the stories that you had the share so I I definitely wanted you guys to to meet. Hey Charles hey joy to meet you. Ma'am Nice to meet you too so it's a little bit. I wish I was there in person. But nobody's nobody's there in Ferguson. Right here in the Person Detroit. And that's the thing. We're looking forward to doing this in person. Once we get to play in the Reindeer Games again we are GONNA get together. Be At the Detroit Shipping Company era. Another location we will get all get together and raise a glass together and Joe's honor so joe. This is what I wanted to throw it. Throw at you and ask you Joe Louis Arena right. They just took down Joe Louis Arena. What was it like when you heard the news that they were going to demolish that building that carried your father's name. That's actually it's a really i. I guess I had mixed feelings I. I had a bunch of she'd go. That was a bunch of people contacted me on facebook and they they all had different ideas and opinions on quite a few of them. Were like you know they're Dugan is trying to raise here trays and the reality of the oldest oldest arena league.

"Mean it's the truth though. Because you can go to a store and the score will will buy three bottles two weeks later. They're buying three more balls than all of a sudden. You're off and running in five ten stores that do that in your brand. You know it's it's also it's people power because today as in the past two hours that I've been sitting here I've gotten four. New People are posting. Here's Joe Pictures and tagging locations and actively helping to let everybody know where they own the product. And so that's really you know it's it's that's the point of this. Podcast really is about their section affinity for Joe Lewis in Detroit and it doesn't hurt that the product is good. But you gotta you gotTa get people mobilized around it and they are and it's really kind of exciting to see the level of passion and excitement that people when they found it. I I I love. I love seeing that excitement. I've seen the obligatory crotch shots where people take a picture of their their find as they get back into their car hopefully not cracking till they get home. But I've seen a couple. Joe Ones come across. Hey the home team. We mentioned we mentioned about the the golden gloves and I can't wait for that event to happen if it is postponed for the year or just postponed. The boxers can't wait for either really looking forward to that actually having And again just to review that Joe Louis Bourbon. Every there's a dollar from every bottle that goes to amateur boxing and then some goes to the golden gloves. What's what's dollar a dollar for every bottle dollar from every bottle sold is contributed to USA boxing? Which is the overall governing authority over all amateur boxing including the Olympics team. Usa They then take that money and and and and you know. Invested in athletes invested in programs for for youth athletes and in addition to that Joe Louis. Distilling company is actively.

Joe Louis is Memory the losing of Joe. Louis arena well. I mean the the thing about it is You know the longer we get from the longer we get from you know from the from the subject of a of history The more you know the more you know especially like the more things that are I guess you say that you know the last that their names spoken Reduces the ability for people to remember. I guess I think that's I think that's really. That's what you know with. The you know the they'll be always be at Joe Louis Arena in memory. You know I mean. That's that's something that's pretty much made People Olympia statements don for awhile. People remember you know Olympia saw it. You know it's it's one of those things at the name's GonNa get mentioned every once in a while. I think folks still have like the original chairs from the From Olympia Tokyo's around. "Talk a little bit more approved boxing and how that all ties in the legacy and we've got drafted you know. I've been friends for Keiko. Speed sillier spacious by me. Yeah we're here watching the video going across so lan. Ron You know you guys are really you're here in Michigan and Detroit and You guys are really here to get out. Sue or local watering holes than to our local local liquor stores. I guess for lack of a better term to really help them understand what the Joe Louis brands all about. What are some of the things that you're doing Right now with everything that we're going through through this crowd through this pan-demic what are some of the things that you kind of have to tweak to get. The job was burned out there a little bit more The everything to be tweaked. We did a kick off with the southern wine and spirits team in it was a virtual Isuzu meeting kick off the first time in my in my career. We launched a brand in platform. So you gotTa do what you have to do and work with tools available and move forward on it and in take this story out to market. Show some folks. In an ounce hasn't success I am success with it gives you that minute to pause and tell them that forgotten story yet her show Serena. There's the Joe Louis Monument downtown. "One of the things are at saw the Unicorn on was when he said. How do you bring back on all day and and for us with Joe Louis of when the really discovered who he really was? You know he was a great fighter. One of the big challenges we face is how really connect the brand all those same margin fools champions day was and that's what we're really trying to make certain of is that we we look very carefully at at Man. What he meant was Detroit. In chitlins religions name was certainly all teams but Joe Louis from Ravi recognizes the most. That's the gap at fully agree. So it's Pretty Amazing Swan. I was thinking about that in the things that you've written in reminded me a lot of our challenge. Reminded me a lot of our challenge in making this all. I really appreciated that a lot. Yeah well he'll Joe Joe Louis I joe Louis emerged. Spent Years Story and Joe Louis really emerged. My favorite after all of this story is just remarkable. "Cave happy hour whiskey cigars. Spirits is stories that go along with Jamie Flanagan. Hey good afternoon. Good evening in podcasts. World I am at Fox and we have Joe Louis Bourbon on tap again these days with Joe Louis. Bourbon guys. Thanks her Always being such great hosts and having US along to have some fun with some Bourbon and stories and we have both today. We have a bartender on tap and we have a master storyteller on tap for today as well Jj Peter. The owners are here with us. Michael is here. He's getting the word out. Nationwide and tear is going to be pouring some drinks. Charles Charles Davison. He wrote a book called Detroit city at champions. It's all about the nineteen thirty five year and how Detroit became such a conic city for sports. And how Joe? Lewis is a massive colossal part of that icon Iq Sports Heritage Detroit and Yeah we're excited for the conversations tonight. Peter you what is your main question. Peter was like so excited that he got got to talk to Charles. Was there something in particular Peter that you wanted to ask Charles? I was really amazed when we back. Liz at Joe Louis is life we just keep finding somebody more of Americana and I think people my generation don't really remember Detroit as the roaring thriving metropolis where everything was cool and in to me. Nineteen thirty five was moment. Timely Detroit was coolest place on even have.

"Your parents are in the public I would talk to you and they have no problem with telling you stories and and that is a really nice way of keeping someone who I I. Really don't in any way feel like he's gone. Well extra jump in percent. You've been alive. Yeah we always GonNa have tasted what did what did you like there. Oh we could talk about the taste in a second. It's something came to mind. Is the world looked at Joe Louis? back in the day Prior were to you know I mean yeah to with schmeling back in the day but the second fight Even Jack Nancy talked about why I fight. Didn't work well but the second fight. The eyes of the world were on Joe Louis. And it's just not Boxing but as need people culturally looked at this is just an amazing thing so I sit and go Joe Louis. Certainly Detroit has embraced him. But I'm not certain that everybody you know culturally speaking knows how important Joe Louis was to the country back in just before World War Two. And isn't that the what's amazing about what we're hopefully able to do? We are introducing. This isn't just about introducing Bourbon. This is about introducing a whole generation. Who Don't know anything about Joe Louis to be inspired me to be good citizens to to work together to overcome adversity and I know it sounds preachy. But what better? Monan time to introduce this brand than how well they're very interesting. You bring that up. I mean here's a thing to Joe Louis Louis. Down in my opinion a people's champion Sire List and looked up to joe but you know site. Listen was not quite the people's champion Joe Louis People. That's a huge difference. You know with the talent. But then there's the people's champion jobs that so there's two things about the bottle that I think are important for people to note one is you need to. I'm not going to read it to you but you need to read the back story because this is Peter. I told me and then we researched it. I mean the fact that you know the reason Joe. Lewis became a golden gloves as a Kid. A fighter you know. His mother gave him twenty five cents to take violent list that he was taking boxing lessons instead and didn't tell her until he knew he was going to be. Something right is right Joe Joe. You want well. He actually never told her. On my best mckinney. Who used who. Also who also the fighter but he Sugar Ray Robinson used to carry my father's gym bag and one day Thursday mckinney's. Mother was walking to the grocery store. And she said Oh. Joe's turning out to be some some fighters NEOM. My grandmother had no idea. Wasn't he using he was using? Joe Louis instead of exactly. Why doubts exactly what happened. He didn't want my grandmother. Find out so using. Our Name is sixteen. When I found out last night was barrow I wrote entire life is Barrow and I want to give my driver's license. My mother and I said who is this person? That's it's somebody in so many layers the layers to this brand's I. I've never been involved in a lot of marketing things in brands. But this has never been a brand that. Has this much this much character? Really? It's does approximate pint bottles I yet naps. Nips Delta. Maybe works unsavory rock guys like myself. That bottle really works. I appreciate do once in a while. You know you can put it in your lapel pocket. Radley's bell doesn't it? I think all that stuff's coming Benny again company off. You know he ain't company off the ground you know complicated thing and as it turns out getting liquor company off the ground is a bit of bear off particularly when you look at licensing and regulatory requirements and logistic. Couple of guys trying to try to get the first product into the market and company. Going you gotta stay focused about no question. Over time you'll see a full range of skews you'll see nick's you'll see of God willing. Maybe the one point five some point. I suppose it will get to that place but you'll see a number of brand extensions and on that number of different product lines out come back unity. One point that we've we've been and I want to connect the whiskey to the marketing story just attachment more. And you know we're in an environment with a lot of celebrity brands on the market place. If you've gone to some of the you take a look at some of Terry Bradshaw Rob Bourbons Mouth. And that was fine football player. But I'm not sure that I've wanted develop a story around round Perry grab show. There was a yacht with maybe the thing about it was when we really took a look at why I mean every grant has to have a why why did why do I care why. Why does anybody really care about this brand and in the Randy? Certainly have to have a great product. I should foremost you have to have a product in stem by in in certainly Lebron. Any burglar is shit. Finance share of detractors. Drives you to spend any time at all online watching as things I've seen people or Bourbon down the drain that that if I was in their house at break open the lights and try to collect it nevertheless there are people out there doing that sort of thing so for us when we really dug deeply in the in the life of Joe Louis what we realize more than anything else is. This product represents far more than than just a picture on the label. Celebrity brand is and to me. It had to have something that that al-najem into justice to the fans life He was was busy at rows of fame in a time in this country. That few of US battle much less understand and and so it's a tremendous responsibility. It guides us it excites us. And it's really it's motivation. You know certainly would want to sell Bourbon. Stephen Covey said no margin no mission. We have to make money obviously But it's really. It's really more than that in me. Personally you know it's it's it's women. Gratitude in this business really comes from is knowing that I'm a part of something that's far bigger than I could ever possibly hope to be on my head and that's really you know that the opportunity to to be working with USA Wasi delivering these motivational posters. With Jolo is going up and jobs all across the country. We just unbelievably one. We should actually talk about that. Because you know it's not lost on us that we've built a program based on cause marketing and sports marketing were a lot of the participants of minors and or are in boxing because they've overcome substance abuse issues. So we're extremely sensitive to that and so part of this that everyone should know. Is that while? We're contributing money in the form of a dollar for every bottle sold to USA boxing as well. As percentage going to golden gloves franchises through our paid sponsorships that we've created be JOE LOUIS DOT COM. That's a site that is purely about really representing demand the legacy and the positive messages and so Peter Referenced Matthias. He's probably going to get that one of the things that is part of our marketing plan and budget. Which has nothing to do with selling? Bourbon is producing posters. That are said to every athlete to to motivate them. Keep fighting your dreams and it has a USA boxing in it does have a little Joe Louis Stilling. But only that connects it is is that actually. Michael doesn't have anything no. There's nothing on this from jog rights and it has the Hashtag. Bj Lewis Right has the. It has the Louis Asa Agan handed it has the USA boxing logo on it. And so we send these out in Michigan today. We we sent fifty posters to every gem in the state and 'em so where the process of doing more and of course what we're really focused on is trying to rain. The legacy of Joe Louis to younger boxing crowd many deeds are lost to history and in the truth of the matter is that young people today think inconveniences a zone on the highway and and melted leaks. Yeah they don't really understand that making changing. You're right I mean everybody might be lying a little bit more about inconvenience right now but you know. Certainly the reference point for what life in America was light in the Nineteen Twenties Thirties and forties? I has is is a distant memory of the most people and in so you know necessarily have a full appreciation or just Momentous Joe Louis achievements weren't so it's GonNa take some work but it's our intention to stay focused on that and it gained produce world-class Ferrets Bill Distribution of obviously. We want to have a successful distribution while program. We want the B. Sarah available to Americans across the country. We want to be responsive company. The Nation's great great bottle of Bourbon but at the same time we've got our our mission and we have that second mission is maybe sometimes more forte. I wanted to tell you that. Your being able to articulate that is really really incredibly important to me and I think that Both both my parents would be incredibly happy with that. That the reality is very few few kids can be my father in the ring right but if they can take just a tad bit of of the determination and the focus and the dedication that comes from training and and.

"Like. Yeah. You know, he's actually Mexican all this type of shit. But you know, he's a white pass. And dude, these white to most most people and just say nigga ain't Chris rock was cool with it this thing. All right. I wouldn't use it anywhere. No, exactly. These two these two we signed agreements. You guys don't. Rickie vases, saying Chris rock and Ricky a Louis CK both us nigga on stage for different jokes, which I don't know of Lisa gay still does it, but he did used to do it. It was funny. So this this is the kinda shit. I'll be talking about. It's funny because at the time I remember being like that joke is not that funny to me. It's just that he wants to say nigger, you try to find a way to do it. He also has a joke with the F word that he does the same way the people who were branding it. Brave. The people who were branding their as funny. The people who were branding it as he knows the right way to say these jokes. Why people they will white people not like that's not to not Louis CK in that, you know, 'cause I think those black community white fan basis that are necessarily mean you're doing something wrong. But when it comes to certain types of jokes and people being like, that's how you tell it. And they're not in the group that Joe. Referring to out that you can trust. It really is like not. That's that's not a Joe Louis. C K can pull out in a black audience. So joking pull out during his special with a mostly white audience and need does five minutes on his nigger bit. And then you know, we all kind of go. Okay.
