In media reporters producers people who work in media to universities to share their professional expertise in the classroom and traditionally they get the protection of tenure which means they have a lifetime appointment right. And it's been presented to applicants that way and it's never been a problem and all of the applicants have been white. This is the the first black person the first black woman who is up for one of these and it's the only one that has come up against this sort of assistance and it sounds like when the dean offered this potential position to nicole hannah jones. She was initially you know she has a good job in new york and she had to think about it but then decided to really throw herself into the application process teaching classes and going through multiple votes from faculty and other people. What is that process. Typically like this tenure process is incredibly rigorous. Not only do you have to come and do all this things you were talking about where you come to teach you submit things people who you don't even know right things about whether you'd be a good candidate in our people who are faculty members at other universities. The faculty in the department has vote. The tenure committee has vote. she passed unanimously through. All these things so it goes up to the to the chancellor and the provost level of chancellor in the provo recommend her. There's nobody in this process. That has a problem with this so far. So where did the trouble start. Well there was sort of a whisper campaign you know. She's such a prominent persons such a prominent journalist and sixteen nineteen projects in the new york times especially has been the focus of such political ire on the political right. I mean leading political figures. Refer minting as sort of a second satanic panic has to do with critical race theory and the idea that white children are going to be taught to be embarrassed of their history and they wanna make us ashamed of america. Kelo school districts are now using the sixteen nineteen project from the new york times for example a curriculum. That project is the work of an out of the closet. Racial extremists called nicole. Hannah jones the president. Donald trump specifically denounced it teaching this horrible doctrine to our children is a form of child abuse and briefly. I should just say that the sixteen nineteen project. The idea of it is that the country was really founded when slaves were first brought to this country and that that is uniquely american experience that has shaped the country ever since. Yeah that's not a bad way of putting it. I mean not in a literal sense. She sang a better way of thinking about the founding of the country is through looking at its relationship with slavery. And for that you've got to go to sixteen nineteen so that is in this. Racial moment that we're experiencing in this country been very controversial and she's one of a few prominent black journalists and scholars who have taken the brunt of the hit from conservatives on this so because that is the case in because she's such a known quantity it got around that they were pursuing her. Yeah what did this whisper campaign look like i began hearing about it because there were some people in conservative circles. Who were talking about it. They were kind of gearing up to prevent this or make it an issue. One of the things that happened was that there was a conversation between dean. Susan king of the j. school and walter hudson walter. Hudson is an arkansas media. Magnate whose family for a couple of asians has owned and operated a lot of newspapers television stations in arkansas. His name is also on the j. School at unc y- because in two thousand nineteen he donated twenty five million dollars. Pledged twenty five million dollars to the school. They named it after him. It's now the hussmann. Unc husband school of journalism in media and they also agreed to etch what he calls his core values of journalism into a wall at the school. And these are primarily about objectivity and you know restoring faith in journalism things that sound really good sort of on their face if you are abstract ideas once you begin to learn what husband thinks they are and how could be weaponized to attack journalism. He doesn't like Becomes kind of a different story so hussmann calls the dean. And says hey. I've heard that this is where it gets. Super strange husband doesn't call the team. The dean calls husband And says we're thinking about hiring nicole. Hannah jones he says well. I don't much like that idea. Here are my concerns. I'd like to see nineteen project. I'm concerned historians have said that they have some problems whether they think that they're eight historical things in it you know. She says well listen. It's got its critics. They've answered those criticisms. You know we're gonna make the decision here ourselves a good one. He says well. I disagree with you. She says while. I disagree with you. Who the our if you just look at the makeup social makeup the racial ethic makeup of of these awards they just don't reflect the students in ideologically they certainly don't represent the students so there's a terrific amount of frustration built up as to how much influence they have. I mean i think that this. This incident proves that when the campus sort of speak says one faculty staff students alumni a major major funders of the university. They can get the attention of the people who are in charge. But you know can they make real change at you know. That's a harder question. Only the members of the north carolina general assembly can change leadership awards and people coming in are not any less conservative. In fact i would say that either more conservative than the people who are leaving. And the and i wanted to ask you terms of the impact of this night of this knightfoundation money which supposedly is also attracting a other foundations. The ford foundation and others for a multimillion dollar grant a howard university. What the impact is going to be a of that decision of these major foundations to essence provided alternative to what. Unc was so late and granting to into in terms of tenure here. Yeah this is not the first one we've seen this either. You wouldn't see lost a major grant after it's a debacle over the silence and confederate monument on its campus and how a candle bat and continues to come in conflict with major donors and to lose downers ends money from individual individuals who donated school to which honestly but some of the folks who were running school and running university. Right now i think it's a microcosm of a lot of things we're seeing in the nation right at public universities certainly at the university of north carolina system in unc chapel hill. Its flagship institution. These organizations are Their boards that governing boards are political appointees so the unc board of governors for instance which governs the entire unc system. All of its schools has one democrat right now because republicans in the north general assembly appointing that democrat is a democrat who lost who is a lawmaker in lost his primary primarily because of siding very often with conservatives and republicans so that's what they put on the on the board there the The board at chapel hill is stacked with white men and stack with people who are conservative. It doesn't look anything like the. The university itself is the question of tenure monday. You get a tenure appointment to champagne problem. I think it might seem that way for many people but nicole. Hannah jones doesn't come from an niger. Your ivory tower background. She doesn't come from the middle class. She's from waterloo iowa. She grew up in a working community where she didn't know black people who went to college. She went to notre dame she went to. Unc progress school. She worked her way up from the chapel hill news in north carolina up to the new york times one peabody hope national magazine awards the pulitzer along the way. So when you see somebody doing what conservatives say that they should do themselves up by their straps achieved in america and then they hit us sort of a glass ceiling for ideological reasons. And now i want to turn to a student when black students tried to attend the unc. Board of trustees meeting on wednesday. June thirtieth were members voted on whether to grant tenure to nicole hannah. Jones campus police forcibly removed. The students from the room as we all of their own call. Now this is. Unc student. Tell talia Van one of the protesters in that clip speaking on black shoes black news tonight with marc lamont hill about whether. Unc is a place where she wants to be now. They feel they can do anything to treat as any kind of way. I want you to ask yourselves. Honestly this is what we saw them do today on camera and they knew the world was watching. How do you honestly think they treat us. When you're not paying attention. I will never ever ever forget the less than unc chapel hill talking today and we'll continue to bring this up when i'm talking to potential. Black students were interested in coming here in the future now. Unc police chief Chapel hill has resigned after what happened at that. Trustee meeting joe killian take us from there. The power of hussmann. The power of the protesters. Well i mean you know. I think what you're seeing in that. Protest clip is a lot of pent up frustration over a a number of issues dealing with politics and race at the university for years where students and faculty and staff members collared do not feel. They've been hurt and have had conflict with the people who are governing the university governing the university system. If you just look at the makeup social makeup the racial ethic makeup of of these awards they just don't reflect the students in ideologically they certainly don't represent the students so there's a terrific amount of frustration built up as to how much influence they have. I mean i think that this. This incident proves that when the campus sort of speak says one faculty staff students alumni a major major funders of the university. They can get the attention of the people who are in charge. But you know can they make real change at you know. That's a harder question. Only the members of the north carolina general assembly can change leadership awards and people coming in are not any less conservative. In fact i would say that either more conservative than the people who are leaving. There's a couple points that he makes, and one of them is You know, Here's the thing about being a reporter doesn't grant you superpower, special rights or privileges. Just a member of the public writes for a living, But over the course of my career, I stood up for conservatives and liberals who were denied access to public spaces or meetings. And that's where I had to stop reading because I remember the entirety of the, uh The the journalistic elite here in North Carolina, who watched while their colleagues were essentially muted in every governor's press conference for over a year. Never raise a finger or an objection. So policy watch can kiss my ass. Okay, well, now to be fair, they were not allowed to ask questions either, and they have been denied their N C. General Assembly. Press credentials. Just like Carolina journal, folks. That John Locke have been right. Right, right? Yeah, So, uh and I don't remember. You're not allowed to go into a closed session to hear the discussions about a personnel matter now, could you imagine that? Like the lawsuit from Nicole Hannah Jones and her attorneys like Of course it would be coming. You can't. You can't allow the public in on a personnel discussion like that. The whole thing is stop. So now it's just like the base of it is still there. Um, but it's now all tied up in court again, so they can't even haul off the final part of it. It's still just there. But usually that's where everybody gathers to protest every Saturday and Sunday. You know, like 10 people, usually every now and again, you get, like a dozen, but they'll be out there with their with their poster boards and stuff, which I actually I submitted, I thought was a really good idea. Just have instead of the Vance Monument, just a big whiteboard, Although I don't know why has it got to be a white board? It could be any colour board is fine. But it could be a big board like a chalkboard or something. And then they can just write their protest slogans for whatever the protest is that day or that hour, Right? Just this way. You're not using up all of the paper products. It's for the earth. You know, it's you know what? I'm not wholly opposed to that, actually, right? No, I'm all about solutions was, Yeah. No, it's nice, because if you drive by and they're screaming on a bullhorn about one thing on your way to work because you have a job and you have to go to work, and and then on your way home from work, they could be screaming about something else entirely. So, really, it's two shows. Right. And if you need to flip the script on some messaging, it allows you to do that, like defund the police. That's an actual Arial headline for about two hours. Um, the real the real dog and pony would have to be a couple things one while that votes going on. A woman on a bullhorn is screaming. Uh, you're not safe. You think you're safe in there? You're not safe in their outside of where votes being taken, Which sounds kind of insurrection into me. And secondly, today was supposed to be or yesterday was supposed to be her first day at work, and she's just like I'm not going to show After all of that, So please handicap this insanity for me, So I appreciate you not raising the point here, but I will do so because I'm a man of honor. Which is I I expected U R a l to leave that headline up. Um, because I didn't think they would suffer any ramifications, Sport you I think we're of the opinion that it would come down and you were correct. I was not. So this is the thing like, I don't look for this stuff. And then now I understand that anti racist critical race theorists would say That's because I you know and racist. Um, I suffer from whiteness. And I am You know, a fish doesn't know it's wet. But like, if you know when people are hired to do the jobs, then if they do a good job, then Like I look at them and they do a good job, which I I understand this now makes me a racist according to the new the new religion, But no like this idea that you are like these kids at UNC, like they were ignorant, right? The kids were ignorant of the rules. They didn't know that these votes for tenure are taken in closed session. Right? And I note all of the apologists in the media for these kids, and even Nicole Hannah Jones is like, well, they should have been told that Why is it incumbent upon the people running the meeting to tell the people who seek a confrontation? What the rules are and by the way, One of the cops did tell the kids what the rule was. One of the cops said they have to take the vote in closed session, but the kids did not know this were ignorant of the rules. And so demanded. Everybody bow to them. And I'm trying to imagine a power dynamic is what do we always hear? Like when you talk about racism that the people that only whites can be racist? Because they have the power who has the power in this exchange? When you can call a cop of pigs scream at you pig right to their faces and occupy space that you are not permitted to be in in a closed session that is meant to help those that you're demanding be help. And you get moved out of the room and you suffer no ramifications and repercussion for that. No penalty, no punishment who actually has the power They didn't have enough chairs. Did you read the whole thread by that policy, the NC policy watching it wet. Um, no, I try not to read much from them. There's only so much like I have a quota. It's like there's only so much I can still in that tank well is so was black. "Considered from NPR news. Nicole Hannah Jones has a Pulitzer Prize and a MacArthur genius grant. She also reportedly had the enthusiastic support of the faculty at the University of North Carolina Journalism School. But she will not be receiving a tenured position there at her alma mater. The reason, according to NC Policy watch is political pressure that conservative groups put on the very highest levels of university governance. So Kelly and Health report this story for NC Policy Watch and joins us now. Good to have you here? Thank you Explain what the objection is and who it's coming from. Well, Nicole headed Schoen's of the course for career has done a terrific amount of reporting about race in America. As part of this, she conceived the 16 19 project, which has been incredibly controversial among conservatives. Um and thistles led to some real trepidation among conservatives, including elected Republicans in this state and sort of groups in the state as to whether we should be a professor at the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill. Your reporting establishes that there was widespread faculty support for her higher, including from the school's chancellor, is it common to see a university, its highest level of management exert so much say in a single professor being hired on a tenure track? The board of trustees has the final approval on on on approval of tenure. This is not a tenure track position. This is a tenured position. It's a knight chair. And, um, but it is unusual for, uh, candidate to get All the way through the process with this level of support and support of the chancellor and then to find it not happening being quite this way, which is that the board didn't even folk. On This tenure would not be proved, and therefore they would be tire her as a contract employee for five years if they wanted to hire it all. The board of trustees also spoke publicly about their decision today. Here's Chair Richard Stevens in his communication of the provost, Krusty Ducat, Ask questions regarding the chin you candidacy. Nicole Hannah Jones suggested more time and postpone the review to consider those questions. Is it so? What he seems to be saying here is that this is a postponement, not an outright denial of 10 year. Can you just help us understand what he is saying here? He's saying that one of the members of the board asked for more time to review her to vet her and that before that could happen before they got more time. And postponed this. The dean of the journalism school went ahead and hired her under a five year contract, which essentially put it into the tenured debate. It didn't go any farther at the board of trustees level because it didn't need to. Somebody hired under five year contract doesn't need to be approved by the board of trustees. That is that contradicts the account of the dean end of people who are involved in the direct negotiations. And just in a sentence or two has Nicole Hannah Jones herself said anything about this. She's been very quiet this week on Twitter. She just said to people who have been supporting her that she's watching and she sees all of them. And she appreciates it.
