"Thought about baseball more than these people had more information than these people. And so generally speaking, made the right decision. This is the same thing I'm kind of getting at. I'm not saying experts are always right. I just trust what their telling me more than 6 79 on Twitter. Listen, you chose 6 that you're a big 6, 7, 8, 9. I get that you want to take the shots of people on Twitter criticizing, I mean, listen, I don't want to get into it. Joe Girardi, you're giving him way too much credit. George roddy had a book and said, oh, lefty, batting one 36. There was no field. I started the binder. I don't care who started it. They did every single thing goes by the book with the Yankees. There's no feel. There's no, oh, this guy threw 6 innings and only gave up one hit. Let's keep it. No, we got to change it because of the anode. So I don't, to me, what the manager does is all nonsense. It's all the GM now anyway and they tell them what to do. So now I'm going to go. Cashman, I just got on my phone ten year ten year extension. I'm sure. He has a job for life. He's never allowed to be fired. You think the Yankees win the World Series every year? And go ask them when I covered the Yankees. I acted like they won the World Series. When they're good, they're good. They have a good team? I think do I think they have a good team? Listen, I'm old and out of touch, right? So like you're never allowed. It's big type of you're never, ever allowed to talk about batting average. Batting average is useless, batting average is bullshit. No one goes right back. Every Yankee is back in two 20. That no big deal. Yesterday is like two 42. Yeah, well, we're all under. Except for Aaron judge. So, I mean, I get Aaron hicks. Aaron hicks, Joey Gallo, Gerrit Cole, where are the articles criticizing these moves? Josh Donaldson stinks. I got one for you that you're going to love, Jimmy. You're going to love this one. But I got to look it up because I was just told this. I'm going to say this. I'm going to write a part of the story about it. But next Friday's game. Yankee game? It's either apple or Amazon. I think it's on apple. Yeah. Aaron judge, a 100%, go bet, go bit all your life savings on Aaron judge hit and at least one of those 60, 61 or 62,000 next Friday. That's fine. I'm not watching it. You won't watch it? Absolutely not. Do you have that? Of course. I'm not going to sit there and put Apple TV on my TV to watch a Yankee game for three hours and not be able to change a channel, flip around. There'll be a college football game on ESPN that night. Do you have it on your phone? I'm not watching it again with my phone.

"I think they have sent him into batsman to the more gender neutral batter, but basically that was the issue. It was that replay review caught players who had both of their feet off the ground just in the course of regular running and according to a strict reading of the old rule when both feet lost contact with the ground, you're considered to be quote unquote out of your ground and you could be put out. And so they just deleted the provided that the batter has continued movement in the same direction clause. And there is something with a bouncing bat. Also a quarter Larry there, and it's the same sort of situation. So they address that. They fix that some years ago and I think we could do the same here and really I'm sort of surprised that it hasn't happened yet. Yeah, it just seems like it's such an easy thing to make everyone's life better, particularly at a moment where we are obsessed with time of gain. Why not a limp just eliminated an entire category of review that makes everyone annoyed? Yeah. That's a good point too. Yeah. All right. Thank you. Well, since we have covered the pressing hot button topics on this podcast of Taylor ward's name being screwed up or other players being mistaken for Taylor word, that has to lead the show, obviously. And then a broadcaster correcting another broadcaster about zombie runner. Yeah. You know, that's your number two story for the day. Yeah. And then in the C block of your show, you gotta go with the fruitless hidden ball trick attempt that not even the broadcasters calling the game noticed. But we should probably get to some subjects that are used elsewhere in the world. Maybe we can start with the Blue Jays because that will segue naturally into the royals. Look at you telegraphing. You've played out a road for us to follow. Yeah, I've broken this episode like a TV writer breaking an episode. I've got all the index cards up on my cork board, and I'm just shifting them around. Which should come first, so we could segue from this topic to that topic. Yeah, and then we're gonna open a hatch and then. So the Blue Jays fired their manager, Charlie montoyo, which I think took people by some surprise. We talked recently about the blue chase having a disappointing season thus far and the fact that they were only a couple games ahead of the Orioles, which is not a great reflection on them, but they are still a winning team. They are still in playoff position or just about right. They still are, I think. I think they store. Yeah, and if you look at the previous managers who had been fired this year. So with the Phillies, let go of Joe Girardi and the angels that go of Joe Maddon, like they have lost a ton of playoff probability this season. Whereas the Blue Jays have not. Now, what the Blue Jays have lost is division. Yeah. They've lost a lot of that hidden effect. They've lost more of that than any other team, I believe. So they are down 43 percentage points. Now, that's partly because they have been disappointing. It's mostly because the Yankees have been surpassed all expectations. So, yeah. Ben, Ben, did you know? We're recording this on Thursday at one 34 p.m. my time. And you are correct to say that the Blue Jays are still in playoff position. The Blue Jays, the Mariners, and Boston, are all sitting sitting tied together amongst the wildcards. After Tampa so, you know, they are still Yankees are 62 and 26. 7 O 5. That's pretty good. Yeah. I won the world. You know, you know that you know that the Yankees are doing really

"This. The Philadelphia Phillies are 14 and three, since they fired Joe Girardi and elevated rob Thompson. Their bench coach, two manager. 14 and three. Now when we talked about that firing, our prior, I would say, was that this would not make a major difference, right? That whatever ailed the Phillies would not be fixed by firing Joe Girardi, well now we have a couple weeks, a few weeks of performance. We have a team that was 22 and 29 when giardi was fired that has gone 14 and three cents. They're not quite in playoff position, but they are close, tell me this if they had not fired Joe Girardi. What do you think? Their record would have been over those 17 games. Basically I'm asking you, do you give the change from Joe Girardi to rep Thompson? Any credit for any of those wins? Or are you going to take a hard line, managers don't matter that much stance and say eh, they would have had exactly the same record everything would have transpired the way it already has. Can I split the difference? That's such a cheapy answer, but maybe that's the answer I want. I mean, I think that if you were to replay those same 17 games, 10,000 times, you know? If you could create that set of alternate timelines, do I think that there is some appreciable number of them that involve Joe Girardi and still have this record like, yeah, probably. I don't think that managers don't matter. I just think that they don't matter as much as other things related to the roster, namely the roster itself. Right. And even the places where they interact most directly with that sort of baseline roster in terms of how it's deployed particularly when it comes to pitching, even then we're talking about fractions of a win. So the question is how much do you split the difference how do you split it down the middle? Do you split it just a tiny bit toward went into the skill or the other? It's kind of a tricky question when I put you on the spot on a podcast. It is a tricky question. I guess that my instinct is to say that things wouldn't change all that much because they are still over that 17 game stretch playing the same the same teams, right? Like they are interacting with the same teams. Now here's the thing that Ben, if I had known, you were going to ask me. If I had known that you were going to ask me, I would have looked up in advance, but instead I'm going to see if I can do it quick here because we're, you know what? No, I'm going to put you on the spot, Ben Lindbergh. I'm going to make you turn the tables. Yeah, I'm going to turn the turntables. Are there any were there wins in that stretch that were particularly flukey, I guess they had two, let's see, the last had some close ones. I should mention they have not been playing great teams during this time. Right. So those wins are they played the angels, they played the brewers, good team, not a great team. Diamondbacks, Marlins nationals, right? So more bad teams or mediocre teams than good teams in that mix. Well, because right, because what day did they fire Girardi? They fired him before the angels. Right before the angels series, yeah. And when did the angels fire Joe Mac? Not long after that, maybe. Oh boy, so how do we account for how those two variables interact with one another, right? Madden was still managing the angels when they were playing. That's true. So let's see. In that stretch, they had, they had a walk off one against Los Angeles. They had a walk off win against the Marlins to walk off wins against the Marlins. They had two games go into extra innings. Yeah. So another one run win or a couple one run wins. It looks like during that stretch. Right. And so I would say that, you know, if they had it to do over again, those probably will not probably, but those might break another way because we know that that kind of stuff can be sort of flukey, but I don't know how much I attribute it to the manager. I mean, unless here's the thing that we don't seem to know, at least I haven't seen it reported anywhere. If there has been hot Phillies gas that I have missed, please send it my way, listeners. But I'm not given to understand that and the Phillies players came out after Girardi was fired and were like, that guy sucked. We hated him. He was terrible. There was probably some like reading between the lines that could be that could be done with some of their comments. I imagine, but I don't think that there was a master rebellion. Now, that isn't to say that there couldn't have been, like, a deep seated dislike of Joe Girardi and just the sheer freedom of being and relief of being free of him might not have inspired them to play better. I guess that's possible, but I think that this is probably just a flukey thing. I mean, I've had times in my life not in my current job to be clear where I have had a bad boss, and then that bad boss is left, and I was a lot happier after that. But I have a feeling that it's just a function of them having played the angels and a kind of slumping brewer's team and a middling DX team and middling Marlins team and a very bad nationals team that has largely contributed to their good fortune. Lately, which I don't say as a knock on Girardi, I mostly say it as a credit to the Phillies players who kind of went and did what they were supposed to, you know? Yeah. So if you were going to take the extreme position and say that the Phillies under Girardi were what their record was and the Phillies under Thompson are what their record is and the difference between those two is the difference between Girardi and Thompson. Then you're talking about a difference of, let's say, 6 or 7 wins, I guess, over that 17 game stretch, right? If you just take the Phillies winning percentage, entering that stretch, they're winning percentage during that stretch. That's a difference of about 7 wins and that's over 17 games. So extrapolate that over a full 162 game season and you are saying that wrap Thompson is a 60 plus win manager. So I don't think anyone is going to say that, right? But I kind of don't think that anyone, well, most people, some people are certainly going to say, yep, they would be exactly the same record if they had kept Girardi. Everything would have happened and they would be 14 and three over that stretch regardless. I think some people would stick to that stance. Others are going to come down somewhere in the middle. I just don't know where in the middle because I was inspired to ask this by a poll that Joshi and put up on Twitter when the Phillies were 8 no under Thompson. And he said, had they not fired Joe Girardi? What do you think their record would be in their last 8 games? And he put up four choices, 8 no, 7 and one or 6 and two, 5 and three or four and four or three and 5 or worse. And I don't know that I've ever seen a more even distribution of poll responses. There was almost an equal response to each option there, where no one option had more than like 27% of respondents saying this one and no one option had fewer than 23% of respondents choosing it. So people were very evenly split there and you gotta figure that Joe's Twitter audience is probably skews stad head, right? And maybe a little less managers make an enormous difference. So that was kind of curious..

"Agree with you. I want to disagree with that. I want to yell at you. But you know what? I agree with you. I don't think they're going to catch the mets in the NL east, but I think that they absolutely are going to have a chance to repeat his champions. I picked them to go back to the World Series before the year started. You could see them putting it together. And the most important piece is Ronald lacuna junior. And when you can hit a home run and take 30 seconds going around the bases, that tells you he's feeling pretty good about himself. All right, angels are fillings. I'm going to take the angels, even though I don't like either one of those teams now going to the playoffs. I'm worried for the angel's sake, buster. They lost 11 games in a row. The ERA is slightly over 7 in that time. The bullpen ERA is slightly over 8. The offense was leading the league in run scored a couple of weeks ago and then Mike Trout hit an oak for 26 and Anthony Rendon got hurt again. He's going to be out at least three more weeks. Taylor ward got hurt. Oh Tommy hasn't been quite the same hitter as last year. The only way that team is going to win is they're going to have to out picture and the way they pitch the first month and a half was great, but no a synagogue has struggled in Patrick Sandoval struggled a little bit here lately. So I don't have the angels as a playoff team at the moment because I'm not sure the problems that they have can be fixed easily. Yeah, and they need my try to turn around. By the way, next Sunday, we've got the mets and the angels on Sunday Night baseball. Mike Trout, he's scheduled to wear the microphone for us. So that'll be fun. I think it would be more fun though, Tim. If he gets a hit between now and Sunday, would you agree with me? But buster is this seriously not the most beautiful part of this game that after Willie Mays, this might be the best and Hank Aaron. This might be the best player I've ever seen. And he's in an O for 26. And I watched him closely yesterday just on TV. He's taken strike one. He's behind an account all the time. Give me another sport where the best player that most people have ever seen goes a week and a half without getting hit. This can't happen in the other sports, no great quarterback, completes 30% of his passes. LeBron has a bad game. He scores 16 and 7 and 6. Mike Trout's zero for 26. He's got to get this straightened out and he will. He's way too good to be in a slump like this. And lastly, the Philadelphia Phillies who have not lost a game under the new manager. Since they fired Joe Girardi, a decision which happened right after we got done taping the other day. Here was Joe Girardi who, hey, credit to him. He kept a radio appearance that he had that was scheduled on MLB network radio. He kept at it and he was asked about why he was fired. I think there's a number of things reasons we didn't win. I think we gave too many extra hours. I think at times our both in struggled. And I think some guys got off to some slow starts offensively. And that happens, right? But I think you can overcome sometimes one thing, maybe even two, but sometimes when it's more than that, I think it's somewhat difficult. We underperformed in that falls on me, so this is what happened. Here's Dave dembrowski, the Philly's president. You talked about this decision. I just think a different voice was needed. I think the topper is a different voice and viewed in a different way with the players. I think he will just have a different relationship with them and with the coaching staff. Then what Joe did. And so I think that that difference is what I'm looking for at this point. And I think it will work. I have great confidence in rob that he'll be able to do that. Rob Thompson, of course, work for years with Joe Girardi with the Yankees, worked with him now with the Phillies. He was asked about the differences between himself and Joe Girardi. Well, I think everybody's a little bit different. And they manage the game a little bit differently. And the managers got the final say. The bench coach hitting coach, pitching coach. They try to provide information and but eventually the managers got the final say. And I'm a little bit different than Joe, I'm not going to go into the differences, but I like to think that I'm prepared. And I'm a good communicator with these guys. These guys are the plan is to make sure that all these guys know where they're supposed to be at any given time, whether it's our bullpen, the lineup, whatever it is, I just want to make sure that the guys are prepared. Tim, could this make a difference? Well, it already has, I just don't think it's going to make enough of a difference when you have a poor defensive team. And you have a bullpen that's not very good. Joe Girardi is right. You have those two problems. It's really, really hard to win. Having said that, yesterday was what we used to do. I used to call as a beat guy. That was the circle game yesterday, buster. They had a Grand Slam to tie it in the 8th and a walk off in the night. I don't believe the Phillies have ever done that quite like that in any game in their history. That's how important that was..

"At ghrelin van grass and I am joined as always, but that number of the ringer Ben how are you? I'm feeling pretty well. How are you? I'm fine. I'm fine. Neither of us has lost our jobs today, which puts us in a better position than mister Joseph Girardi. His squid is fried. We talked on our last episode about Girardi's chair being wobbly, and in between that episode and this one, it toppled all the way over. Yep. He has gone sprawling on the floor. Joe Girardi has been dismissed as manager of the Philadelphia Phillies. Yeah, keeping up his radio appearances despite his firing. That's good. Got something to fall back on. Yeah. He'll be back in the broadcast booth in no time, I'm sure. Right, and you know, because of how these things seem to go probably wouldn't rule him out for making another managerial run at some point. No, not at all. Yeah, so we talked about everything that ails the Phillies last time. So we don't have to rehash the whole segment, which was probably pretty depressing for Philly's fans, but I guess baseball life in general is probably pretty depressing for Philly's fans these days and I don't know whether dismissing Joe Girardi helps in that respect. I was gonna say, do you have any of those problems we identified? I don't think it solves the problems. I think sometimes a manager can become a locus of fan anger. Whether it's truly the managers fault or not or what the managers contribution to the disappointing season is, sometimes the manager, you know, they're the public face. They're out there, they're making the moves, they're filling out the lineup cards. It's not necessarily their fault if the people whose names are on the lineup cards are not hitting or fielding or the right people are not pitching. But they're the figurehead. They're the person who's out there on the front whose name is sort of on the stationary. I suppose. So they're a public face of the franchise. And therefore, maybe on some level, it is satisfying to see the person who signaled for the reliever who came in to blow the game, even if it's really the relievers fault for blowing the game. Yeah. JoJo already put them there, although ultimately maybe David brasky put them there. So it doesn't really solve the problem on any fundamental level. Will the Phillies play a bit better from this point forward than they did up to that point? Maybe probably, right? I don't think they've dramatically underperformed because I think they were probably the expectation was that they would be a 500 ish team yet again and that if some things went their way, then maybe that could lead to a playoff appearance in the 12 team playoff format. But 22 and 29, it's not a wild, drastic underperformance, but they've lost ugly a lot lately. Just generally the team as constructed as we spoke about not the most aesthetically pleasing brand of baseball and then they've also had a bunch of really tough losses lately, which presumably is what did Girardi in, so maybe it's satisfying on some knee jerk reflexive immediate level, but then maybe the despair sets in again because he realized that there's a new manager in charge, but the roster is the same. And the new manager isn't even a new addition, really. It's rob Thompson, the former bench coach who's now going to be the interim manager. So does that actually address any of the deficiencies that got the Phillies to this point? I kinda doubt it. And that isn't to say that he was perfect. No. As a manager, or even, you know, above average, as we grade these things with all the great accuracy that we were able to bring to bear. On assessing managerial performance, but yes, it does, it does feel like this is part of your job description when you get hired as a manager and perhaps the part of your job description that you hope you never have to really do. But sometimes you're the sacrificial lamb because it's not like they're going to, you know, they're not going to cut any of their recent free agents on it. So that's not going to help. You know, I don't know what the solution is going to be. I guess you can say at Nick Castellanos and Giles will really be better defenders, but is that going to help probably not. So Dave de brassie said, it has been a frustrating season for us up until this point as we feel that our club has not played up to its capabilities. This is the Phillies president of baseball operations, while all of us shared the responsibility for the shortcomings I felt that a change was needed and that a new voice in the Clubhouse would give us the best chance to turn things around. I believe we have a talented group that can get back on track and I am confident that rob with his experience and familiarity with our club is the right man to lead us going forward. So it's a new voice in the Clubhouse. It's a change. It's sort of a surface level change because there's a lot more change that needs to happen. And maybe you can trace some of that change back to dembrowski, who was not gifted with an ideal situation when he took over in the first place, and even the situation he walked into in Boston, where they had prospects at least they had a farm system. Yes, some of it was him just throwing money around, which can be a useful skill for a GM, but he also had some prospects to.

"It falls on the warning track. Nemo's coming around third. He will score. Incredibly, it is now 8 to 7 mets on Marte's double to the base of the left center field wall. They've scored 7 times in the 9th inning. It's got pransky was speechless assemble. I think you agree with me there for a second on sports radio 94 WIP because of what happened to Phillies last night. Yeah, it's a good thing that this is not one of those baseball tonight podcasts that were broadcasting on YouTube. So viewers and listeners didn't have to see two specific fingers that I'm holding up to you at the moment. So I appreciate the kind of words about the girls that I'm having in September, but what happened last night in Philadelphia was unimaginable. It is the most painful thing in the world to lose a game like that. But honestly, it's not really all that surprising. I went to that par for the course, but we've watched the Phillies bullpen implode over the previous two seasons. We've seen Joe Girardi mismanage that bullpen over the previous two seasons. And we've also seen bulk showalter come in and instill a culture very quickly in the Met's Clubhouse where that's at least possible. You know, a year or two ago, that was not possible. But not only did the mets squirrel those runs in the 9th inning, but the mets pitching held the filling scoreless for the last 5 innings of that game to make that possible. So I guess it goes to show you how far the mets have come in such a short period of time. And how the film is at the same old same old. Okay, we're going to dig into the Philly just a little bit more, but I want to hear literally what your reaction was as that was playing out. Okay. I mean, I would describe it as watching a train crash happened in slow motion because there became this sense of pain. Were you in your living room where you might I'm in my bed in the game? Yeah. I'm in my bedroom. I'm watching the game on you because my wife is sleeping. And I would say I wake up very early, so I contribute to how cranky I am this morning. But once at which point in the evening, it became obvious to me that the Phillies were going to lose the game. But I actually considered turning it off because I didn't want to see it happen. So that's where I am as a Philadelphia fan at the moment. The sixers are crumbling before our very eyes. And as soon as that lead started to begun chipped away at, it's just became obvious but I'm at the point in my fandom now where it was like this ominous thing when we're leading 7 to three. It's the worst. It's the worst possible thing imaginable. The thing that made it even worse was through it that I knew it was going to happen way before it did. That was the feeling that I was actually having one. That's when I turned off the game and I started watching other games and then my son raised me and texted me last night late and he goes, dude. And that's all he said in a moment. I have no idea what that means. He goes, did you see what happened with the Phillies? So I wish I had done the same. I wish I had this. I wish I could. And this lead right perfectly into a game that you suggested before that blown lead last night, a game of panic or patience in regards to three teams and we'll start with the Phillies, is it time for panic or is it time for patience? Oh, it is time to panic..

"Understand I comprehend. But if you're a fan of a blessed team, one of those other great teams like the Red Sox or the Giants or the teams that can do whatever they want and end up back here, the raise. And you want to be like, shut up, make you fan you won 92 games. This is not good enough and it's objectively an aggravating season. The loss of big experienced, you are not gonna find a 92 in team that loses this many games like this ever again, except for maybe the Yankees next year if they maintain the status quo. But it's almost impossible for a 92 in team to lose this many games. A great team loses like three of these games. Like three head scratchers per year. And that's across the board. Sometimes the umpire steel strike three from Justin Wilson in Detroit. It happens. It's very frustrating. But the Yankees have easily 15 coin flips that all went in the opposite direction. And so I guess with superior managing and better energy and better attentiveness to detail, they could have been a 106 win team. Yeah, well, the problem. So the reason the reason I say this is 50 50, whether he's going to come back or not is because I think the front office is apathetic. I think I'm totally agreement with you. Yeah. And I don't think fans would necessarily disagree. I think cash needs to be fired. I think he's made great personnel moves. Do I think that it's a little bit robotic because I'll say it again, they don't really consider the personalities they're bringing into the building. They don't consider the cultural impact and the just overall morale impact that a manager has bring it like I did I like Joe Girardi. He was fine. Did I really think it was a great decision to jettison Joe Girardi after he took them to one game before one game within the World Series? Not necessarily. I sit here thinking a lot what may have been if he had just stayed. And I'm not saying that because I liked him and thought he was capable of running it back again. I question it from the front office perspective. It's you just kind of you just have this amazing rally, 2017 was absolutely incredible. It's one of the most it's one of the most unforgettable failed playoff runs in recent memory for any team. And you go ahead and you strip that team down. You take away the guy who led the charge. And it just, it didn't entirely. It made sense on a certain level because it was clear at some point that Girardi over. It would have been, you know what? It kind of would have been like what happened this year..

I think about this the more i think that they're going to make roster changes for sure. But you're going to see cashman and you're going to see boone back. Let's go to ron and toms river new jersey. What's going on ron. Hbo how are you usually do a joke watch. But i'm a boston. Red sox fan. Congratulations ron and joke. Watch with pretty damn good on sunday. I really have nothing bad to say about the guys listening. Keep the good times roll. But i'm really fast. So i have to push back on the fact that you say. I'm like a head coach. Baseball is not like a head coach. Kind of disagree. Because you have to head coaches in the al kevin cash and outscore up that play their team like a fiddle. I mean for example the tampa bay's bullpen is one of the youngest in the league and he plays those guys so well he knows exactly where it went to push their buttons when not to and outscore is a great communicator in the clubhouse a lot of latin players he can sit them down and cool him off and they Like an ear to listen to. I just think that you know you kinda miss your shot a little bit with that which you know i mean i know i hit the shot i use this degreed with it I there's no way you can compare a head coach in football to a manager in baseball. And maybe and think about the kevin cash thing. Yeah he's but you could say he plays a like a fiddle but the way that the entire front office sets up the game plan. You guys forget like it's like this happens. This guy comes in if that happens this guy comes in and it's all a collaborative effort. Now we'll give you credit lease from the corps situation as far as him clearly having an impact. Because you saw what happened when he wasn't there for a year and maybe his energy resonates with that clubhouse better than others but that's with the red sox with the yankees you know. They had a guy who was a little more tense. A little more intense in joe girardi decided to get rid of him and bring in someone that was completely in line with the general manager. So if you just wanna talk about the yankees..

I got to give a shout out to the new york yankees. They're they are inventing new ways to lose thursday night. We saw them with four. Sh four passed balls to lose a game. I think two of them are wild pitches to pass. The catcher looked like he was trying to catch a butterfly. Those two have never worked together. They met earlier that day. Never they have to. And then today they had a no hitter going into the eighth up for nothing. Lost five yet that stuff. That's and then aaron. Boone was like we face versity before. That guy deserved boone. "To 2. The baseball game wasn't even the most exciting part. Joe Girardi, manager of the Phillies, wanted to have Max Scherzer checked in the middle of the game. To make sure and ensure that he wasn't using any illegal substances. Max Scherzer was not happy. And the scene that we got was similar to what you'd see at an airport. When a passenger is very frustrated. That T s a is taking too long to check them out. And so that was seen was just absolutely hilarious. And we've had a fun time tonight. We talked about the future of the NBA and some of the silly comments made By Magic Johnson that whenever LeBron James is done, you know that Kevin Durant would take that over and find that to be comical there only four years apart. Career is a little bit more parallel than anything different, or that follows things up. And, of course, We've had to talk about this game. In this game between the Phoenix Suns in the Los Angeles Clippers. It seemingly took forever. The Phoenix Suns. As I told you, they 114 to 103. Two old series, Li This was a close game. This was a close matchup throughout Couple of standout performances or at least memorable moments. Devin Booker and Patrick Beverley. Just collided. They had a clash of the heads. Devin Booker is out there on the offense close to the three point line moving towards the top of the key. And boom head to head him in Beverly, their domes collide. They both go in the back. Beverly comes out with a wrap. It looks like Devin Booker is either stitched up or glued up. He has God's in his nose. And the game continues on Devin Booker, not the greatest of nights. 20 points five of 16 from the field, one of three from downtown Cameron Payne. Career high. 29 points, nine assists filling in for Chris Paul, who is still in Covid protocol. And DeAndre Ayton. He basically he didn't basically he did seal the game. The sons were down. 13 to 1 Oh 2 9/10 of a second left on the clock. It's not too much you can do. What did they do? Crowder throws An alley oop from the baseline. Two DeAndre Ayton Who goes up and slams it down. The Suns win 14 to 103. But they didn't because the referees go ahead and check the clock, seven cents of a second or left. But you know what? The Clippers can't get off a shot. They throw the ball all the way down court to Paul. George. He can't get the shot off. The game is over. A matter of fact, I want you to hear that play call here. "And when you watch his release point on all of his pitches exact same spot. It is. It's really impressive Me being a former pitcher that's extremely impressive to where his arm slot is Every single pitch mechanics are perfect. Just get a bit of a break. We saw him when the Giants went to Citizens Bank, but he won't pitch this weekend. John did mention tomorrow in the daytime. Erin Ola will go and he's a former All Star and I was watching his last start back against the Yankees and Joe Girardi let him go a little deeper in that game. A lot of change ups from him. I mean, that was kind of a breakthrough start. We had a good one earlier in the year, but how would you assess Erin Nola's overall season so far, Ricky Overall, I'd probably go with a C minus for him. You know he had that one good game. I believe it was April 18th. He came out through his first ever complete game shutout and he was dazzling at that point during the season. Then he kind of lost Field for his pitches. He wasn't commanding his fastball within the strike zone, and his curveball was getting very loopy, which he's got more of the jetting type curve ball. It looks. You know, it kind of starts off low and then jets down at the end. His curveball started having a little bit more of a lollypop motion on it, which wasn't a good thing. He was let that go behind his body, So he had some mechanical issues. And, Yeah, he did have a really nice start against Yankees, his last time out. Uh, you know, you just hoped for Phillies fans, at least not for Giants fans. You hope he comes back and and just throws like he did against the Yankees again. Consistency has been a big problem for him, though, this year, okay? Alright, Ricky. August 2 1998. What is it like being charged by 1998 Barry Bonds. Oh, man. He's a big boy. Oh, that's a great hand. I mean, truth be told. Truth be told I should Truthfully, I don't know if you guys ever read into all of that, but I shouldn't even have been pitching that day because I had just come off elbow surgery. And I pitched. I believe two innings the night before. And doctor's orders were three days off after that, and apparently, I don't remember the exact situation. Bond stole second base. They were up a lot of runs. And we there was a call down to the bullpen. Jerry Spradling. Remember Jerry Spradling? He does have him. Yeah, yeah. Wow. Yeah are thrown right and a big guy. Was told to go in and hit bonds. He warms himself all the way up. And then looks at the, uh, both head coach says I'm not hitting him. So the phone rings again like him. Yeah, they're like No, They just called for me. They knew nobody else would do it. So I was like, Yeah, I'll do it and I mean, at that point, I was still I was throwing like 87 because my elbow hadn't healed yet, But I didn't have any rehab time left, so I was kind of stuck. And Payment. I threw one pitch in the bullpen. I got onto the mound that day, one pitch and Marc parent through it down to second base. And then one pitch in the game is and then you guys know what happened there? I thought you don't buy so bad for my mother. Mind You there from Connecticut. Okay? Yeah, they came out. It was my my oldest brother's birthday weekend, so everybody came down. And of course she's at the game. Oh, and my brother is like he's in there to hit him. My mother was, like, Don't know. You know, my little boy, but you know what? I did what I was told to do, And that was that. And, uh, the the oddest part was my oldest brother was The day after my suspension ended was in San Francisco at the old Candlestick, and, uh, I'll never forget. Who do I come in and face in the 85? Of course, I have an 02 pitch and I just missed them in the chin. That place where absolutely bananas. I'm sure Oh, my brother was in the scene. He's got it on tape. Maybe one day I get it to you Send that to me. So that from the stands and the people were going ballistic. It was It was not pretty. Let me let me let me let me back you up because, like you said Bonds in that game was four for four with a home run of Triple two singles. Three R B. I s And he stole that base You're talking about in the fifth inning, and the Giants were up 92. So then he comes up against you later in the game. And the Giants are up 12 3, and that's when you hit them. Yeah, but you know what? On top of it, I got another run for that. Because if I'm not wrong, Lane Gombe came in and face JT Snow and Snow in a two run, homer. Damn that you should have hit 83 guys. You should ahead. JT did very ever say anything to you after that happened. He actually did. Um, when? When I came into San Francisco, you know, you have to walk across the field to go to the dugout. I was walking in the dugout and he literally like grabbed me and he says, I understand, he said he understood what I did that day. And.

"That could wind up being the you know, asking for the richest deal in NFL history. You know that. That's the kind of thing I think he could. Asked for reasonably actually. So could it. Alan Mayfield. Not so much, But Alan could make that same case. Yeah. Patrick Holmes is the best quarterback. And rightfully so. He got the biggest deal. But the way it's worked in the past is whichever quarterback sign that next deal would would sign a record breaking deal. Right? I don't think that Prescott Steel was so far off of the homes that my Holmes's can't actually be. Taking over. So I think In all three of these cases, the deals will get done. And all three of these cases they'll be mega deal, so it's hard to predict which one will happen first. But I guess the one that I think you could see you know, protracted negotiations about where it ends up being would be Lamar Jackson. But if he is, you know indeed. Representing himself. "Now on the one hand just doing it is the way you're gonNA learn so there's no other way to figure out how to do it other than saying I want to be podcast and therefore I will cast my name is Joe Girardi and I host the protagonist podcast previously I co-hosted we'll get into that I am sure we definitely will but I i WanNa know what got you into the podcasting game what made you become a podcast so in uncut somewhere in late two thousand fourteen one of my best friends from high school reached out to me and said delisted podcastone yes hide I listen to podcasts for years now and he's like I think I want to start one and I said I've batted around the idea starting one for a while and never committed and he's like let's commit and then within a month or two we had recorded our first episode and then a little bit after that we we've dropped the weekly episode of the protagonist podcast ever since What's never missed week which has been difficult at times there's always hurdles that come up in this case both my former co host todd Mac and I okay work in academia and he had a semester abroad in Spain and that was a little rough and making sure that we got a weekly recording done and we are back is to find work arounds dull recording when could but there were definitely times where we were starting recording very late might live and very early his time to make it work and we struggled through and and made it what is the premise of the protagonist podcast the premise of our podcast. I took a few rough drafts you know we've added a few ideas back and forth eventually we settled on What is the protagonist podcast where each week we talked about a great integrate story and we try and make sure that we mix it up our goal is basically we don't hit this one hundred percent of the time but but basically we wanted to talk about a character from a TV show a comic book a film and a novel every month so that's kind of the rotation we sprinkled some other things and we've touched on some other forms of storytelling podcast in there as well eventually we said well let's just talk about some great characters in great stories and we do try and mix it up between kind of the Classic Canon Story so we've definitely talked about some Shakespeare Jane austen with more pop culture stories we've done the planet hulk graphic novel which I think that Kinda grab bag at has its pluses and minuses I think it keeps some people will get up because they're just like that one's not for me interested but at the same time it might may expose listeners to things that are unfamiliar with it definitely has exposed me the host of the pot podcast to some stories that found from listener requests or things at todd suggested we have patrons at a certain level can request the topic to talk about and so in doing at this point we have released two hundred twenty episodes I think we've recorded about two hundred thirty 'cause we try ours is evergreens we try and keep a back catalog going there's just a lot of threat of material has been covered so one of my favorite things is finding a new story that I probably wouldn't across because of one of those suggestions saying Oh this is great I love this I'm so glad that I've been introduced to that I hope that we've been able to do that for listeners at some point as well I've been listening to your show for a few years now and I tell you that isn't that is one of the reasons why I it's because I get exposed to things that I never would have known about otherwise absolutely never would have known and it's a lot of fun there you and your your one hundred percent right there around Mike I don't even think I'm going to be interested in this and I I never deleted I just like okay I'm gonNA listen to that one finished these other ones and then and then I listened to what it was I should listen to that right away because I think I'm GonNa go watch that one of the first one that comes to my mind that you did a really deep dive on and it was it was an amazing episode food was watership down and I have no idea why because the cover has bunnies on it but I always thought that was like Mabel Battle Story I heard you talk about it was like Oh that's what I thought it was at all I well I didn't think it was I thought it was about sailor bunnies because as a child I caught five minutes of the animated adaptation and it was like this is very brief passage in the novel where they float down the river some but that's part and it's called watership down so I assumed this was all about seafaring rabbits for some reason and tell I'm pretty sure that one was a a patron request that came in and I started reading I was like Oh this is good it's not about see very rabbits and I got really into it and that was one of the episodes of kind of blew up for US view stick with podcasting while you know you kind of get the numbers that you expect for a number of downloads like you you kinda get your but then every once in a while you hit on something and it's like catching lightning in a bottle you're not quite sure why but it blows up and watership down for us like blew up on our facebook page we had thousands of likes on that one episode when we had done things that we would have thought would have a much larger fan base like we do Harry Potter episodes every year I'm you know we're we're going through one book per year kind of what we're doing we've done episodes on Star Trek and star wars and popular TV shows that you know do all right folks but watership down I think the combination of having a much broader and deeper fan base we knew seems like a lot of people from the comments we were getting on our facebook page like read this as in their adolescence or whatever and and just never forgot and it's stayed as a favourite and they've gone back to revisit it and a combination of that with no one talking about it on podcast whereas I think that's a big secret right there is everybody I everybody out there is talking about star wars and star trek and it's really hard to get really hard to get noticed on that but when you're when you're talking about something that nobody else is yeah I think that's I think that's something that really worth a magic happen yes absolutely and and also I mean it is a great book and it holds up to a lot of scrutiny and e easily we're able to do our our long discussion the episodes tend to be about an hour in length sometimes you know fifteen minutes sometime seventy minutes but about an hour is what we're shooting for and I delightful surprise both to say Oh this is something that's so good that I had never engaged with and I probably wouldn't have engaged with podcast and then also to discover that it kind of caught fire for a podcast and spread so you mentioned that it's a book that holds up to a lot of scrutiny and you you keep saying that you work in academia but let let let's throw this out there you're you're commercial that you have or that you had when it was you and todd were a couple of fan boys with PhD and that wasn't just that wasn't just fluff that was that's a fact correct yeah so I have a PhD Michigan State University in American Studies and at Michigan State they they have kind of a threat of HD? emphasis on American Popular Culture and my PhD dissertation was on race and gender in the X men comic books most of my academic publishing has either been on superhero comic books or on TV shows like the office or frazier or cheers so those are kind of my veins of research which todd has a PhD from Stanford and he studied the literature of Spain it's peninsula literature is what his PhD was and so you're taking this experience that you have with American pop culture PhD's literary background and you're diving into things like planet holck and and I always forget the name of it but it's the it's the youtube adaptation the Lizzy Lizzy Bennett Diaries yes yes that was a patron requested they've requested something that was more like classic literature I can't remember what it was now but then they switched at the last minute never mind I want to hear you guys talk about high school musical for an hour that was a fun episode as well and one of the strangest complaints I guess August complaints we've had because if you're going to be putting the material out there on the Internet do not just GonNa get bracelet with people who aren't fans of what you do but one of the biggest complaints we had is when we did an episode on Catcher in the Rye classic American Cannon Literature You know it's the signed in high schools or colleges all the time and both have literature you know backgrounds and and academics grounds but the person complained because we were making jokes while we talked about catcher in the Rye and that really upset them and in response we kind of Said look we we are GonNa talk about classic cannon things and we're also gonNA talk about light pop culture things and the combination that we think listeners or they are going to have is that we're going to try and living deep in the lighter pop culture things we're going to try and have some fun when we're talking about the classic deep literature you know the the cannon with a capital c ideas of literature and we want to always maintained that mix of having some good insights but also having some fun with the topics we're talking about not taking ourselves or the texts too seriously so you mentioned that you now hosted hosted the protagonist podcast by yourself todd todd went off he moved out of state and and pursued other projects projects yeah we made it for four years together he left on the two hundred episode he's been back a couple of times since then it's not like we had a big talk when he's gone he just said with with his career in studying peninsula literature is that I can't take the time commitment that this the maintaining this podcast is taking away from the studies I need for for his career he he just couldn't do it we we as he I mean he did it for four years so there's a lot of podcasters can't make

"Wonder if joe man's going to school the same way of all the other veteran managers in major league baseball always have decided they don't wanna pay the older guys they'd rather use young guys analytics they'd rather make out the lineups in the front office rather than let managers do it in the dugout. We saw dusty baker. We saw joe girardi. We saw a buck show walter walter. We saw john farrell. We saw all these old. Tom skippers get shuttled out and not to be seen again. Is this going to happen to joe.
