"Ken burns is a great documentary. Filmmaker i don't know how i'm gonna make the segue but i'm not real. I know you did. But he did. vietnam war. He did The history of baseball did the civil war and he has a new documentary that premieres. It's september nineteenth through the twenty second on pbs. And it's a four part film by. Ken burns his oldest daughter. Sarah and her husband david Mcmahon and. Ken burns kind enough to join us on the program. When did mohammed ali become a hero. I think he was a hero. Almost from the beginning That that that kind of pan world here heroism happens that the towards the end as as we let go of the memories of some of the deficit aspects. But he's at the beginning he saying i'm pretty as a girl. I'm black i'm beautiful. He is providing many people in this country with phrases and and purchase for ideas. That didn't have. We made a film on. Jackie robinson he redefined black manhood black masculinity mohammed. Ali came along and redefined it in a different way. Athletes weren't supposed to speak that way. They weren't supposed to to brag. Certainly black athletes weren't supposed to do that and he did it anyway. And and just brought him into so many people's hearts if he turned off some other people then he joins us separatist religious sect which turns off another group of people and then strike three john he. He refuses to a induction into the united states army. And so we think of him as divisive. He's also quite provocative about how he treats his opponents. Joe frazier for example Todd boyd scholar says in our film. You know he. He uses the language that a white Racist would use about a black man to describe his opponent to black men. And it's inexcusable. And yet emerging out of it is a person always with a sort of a joie de vivre kind of great sense of humor. A sense of natural promoting in a very american sense and any kind of beauty is greatest athlete of the twentieth century. Maybe of all time. He's won the championship three times even though he lost three and a half years at the height of his power because of his religious beliefs. This is a black man. Saying i won't fight in the vietnam war for religious reasons and american can only hear black man doesn't want to go. He's giving us the middle finger. This is a political gesture. So even though the prosecutors are suggesting a more lenient than the draw the judge sends into the maximum five years and when he's exonerated he begins a comeback. He begins a climate begins with some winds but most significantly in the fight of the century. Seventy one against joe frazier loss which takes very well. He's behind on points. He goes out in the last round. He's knocked down. It gets back up again. He's very soft. Spoken speaks about the larger sense of being a role model even in loss and from then on. It's just robert lip site in our film. Says joe frazier fight. But mohammed ali one america..

"Follow snacks are maybe not easy. Lives in another country and he. He builds like maybe eleven knives at a time when when he like. The mini. Buster is a production version of something that i watched him labor over on instagram for a year. You know he. He's a real Mad genius coming up with new You're talking about the details coming up with new ways of building knives. you made one with absolutely no hardware. It's kinda locks together and fits in there. You've got folder. These are personal engineering. Feeds them by personal. I mean it's a one man working on this thing obsessed with this problem until he gets it right and then he handed off to a company like we and they're able to mass produce it. That is a huge benefit to those. Like you and me who you and i are not going out in actually buying your me going out and actually buying a customized because we can't afford them but i damn it. I want that next design. How can i get it. Well we can make it for you or react to make for you. I think they do a real service and this has come up a lot. I i really wish that economics. The financials could work for an american company to fill that space. I totally agree like actually You know in this whole the whole. I won't say the words doesn't like it. The whole pandemic thing started That's you probably noticed. I know i did that. That's when you got more of the comments of people kinda give them other youtubers. Like i got a little bit myself. Crap about Buying the chinese made knives you know of and you know what i would love like you said to be buying these types of knives from an american company but they just there aren't any there was there was What set one that started with a. m. millet millet and are they even around anymore. You know like they're around but they do really small small batches..

It seems to be a builder of all kind of cool. Cool things man's man man's man yeah puts it shows. Pictures of self shooting bows and arrows and stuff like that good stuff. Yeah so what are what are the. What are the trends. Were the nice things that you really like. I know you said you're not much of an automatic guy but what are the. What are the things that really draw tonight while really any bowie. I love bowie. Shapes misses the new hinderer half track bowie. In you know this is a small knife. And i'm not big into big knives. Draw me and that's one. I'm not usually into smaller knives. But because of bowie on it in i missed the The new eclipse bowie run. You know i had to jump on this. You know this was another stimulus. investment and That's the only reason i was able to get. These never would have been able to save my money that long. Yeah well things come up. I can save up to like the three hundred dollar mark but when you start getting into the four twenty five five plus like i. I just can't hold out that long. So so you're saving for a knife and you get up to about three hundred and then you see one. That's about three hundred. And you're like oh i should go for that exactly. Yeah in all my buddies around. We've already got three knives. In between my last one guy know i need something. I could show him today or tomorrow. You know my own. that's what i like. Barings i like Like flippers thumbs. I'd like like pretty much. all manual. Do like barings prefer them. Because like i said. I'm a fitter. So i like too obviously barings just a little bit more fun to play with in. I love titanium like i wasn't a big into my car but.

"Is a bad thing. I mean i wish i was born into money. Sometimes but you've had you've had to work everything that you've gotten in life and so when i had to work you know like however many hours put money aside to get this which i wrote. This was like this was stimulus. Money right here well-spent but you know other knives like from work saving up in it you you appreciate it more you know. I can't just go out. And buy another one of these tomorrow. If i if i snap the blade or something because i gotta go prove to everybody that this is a hard use folder. You know in your heart us guy. Exactly you know might be a little rough around the edges. But i'm rather soft and tender. But yes i don't know yet so i appreciate it more so therefore like that. It's it's just. I just like i wanna keep your looking nice you know and I guess we buy a new car. You know same thing you know you you get that i scratch on it. You try park away from everybody out in the parking lot because you don't want anybody parked next to it and you baby you know because if someone that doesn't have a lot of money in the stuff you have you take great pride in and I mean that to me is like i don't know maybe not everybody that that has money is like like that. Oh you just throw it away and just grab another one. I mean that's just like kind of a way of describing. I guess the way. I would think about it. I honestly think. If i could go out and buy new one of these tomorrow i would have one secure in my pocket so open up crappy nasty boxes with because it's fun to hold. I'm sure it's fun to use to. I mean the hollow grind. I've measured it. It's like ten thousands. Behind the edge it is residual. So i mean you're splitting atoms in half like five.

Would that never met would entrust three four five six hundred dollars of their property to me. Just send it back whenever done with you know like it's crazy but people are awesomely. Yeah yeah so. People call it the knife community and it definitely is a community. You know people. I've met people and become friends with people. I've never shaken hands with present company included But it occurred to me today. This is this is something i think about on and off. I've heard people talk about economies like You know a national economies or whatever just an economy requires a trust. You know like you have to trust the dollar dollar. You have to trust that that he's a paper is worth something and trust is the main ingredient of any economy and the knife community really really runs on trust. It's like you said. I mean that knife that you're showing right there. In that video i understand was was was gifted to you. And how generous is that. And that's not even a trust. The trust thing is Sending five five five hundred dollar. I fell into Lifting weights and was heavy into that for like ten years when i stopped lifting. I kinda just fell back into knives. It was weird In just watched a few videos. I get sucked in started. I bought a z. T. was the oh five. Six one. I think it was one of the first hinders collapse there in After that night. So i was just i was stuck into the higher end production. And you know so watching everybody's reviews in a lot of other people thinking i could do that. You know but you don't realize it's a lot of work to try to make channel be successful in grow you know. You can't just do it like once a month or whatever you know you gotta be consistent in the community itself is what's kept me in it. You know you guys laudi other guys. I talked to on youtube in it. Sucks you win. You know if you if you have addictive personality like i do. I can get addicted to a broom. If i use it everyday to sweep so it was. I fell into a heard. That's pretty much. That's how it went when you got back into. Not you said you got back into. The matthew stopped stopped lifting. Does that mean you were collecting beforehand Here and there. Like i'd never bought anything substantial like i had on a believe i i just like kershaw. I had no idea that there was anything better than like an eighty dollar night. You know and But i would get one and that would be fine for like a year. You know and then i randomly be somewhere when i liked and i pick it up. You know but. I didn't. "I believe this is the Joe Frazier's conversation Hey think about the great ones all get knocked down okay that is just a fact when you when you do not revisionist history when you look at the facts of history in sports the great ones they look at the way tiger came back and won the masters when everybody wrote him off you know what he did and thirteen months ago less than thirty minutes ago and you know Michael in tiger from the same ilk if I can use that word on just being driven to be the best in you know Michael Jordan after he got through the pistons and like you said van it wasn't as hard because of the confidence I wonder after the pistons school and by the way scoop Jackson ESPN dot com Chicago one of the best NBA insiders in the business and joining us here on the huge across Michigan talking about M. J. the last dance in the bowls so after the bad boys which was an obvious rivalry in one of the great ones in a similar to the Lakers Celtics we've ever seen in the NBA who was that who was the next challenger up you know how I know there wasn't another Frazier to use the boxing terminology but who who drove Michael after he got through the bowls and I have to go through the pistons and won the World Championship who was the next team target or individual target using the push Michael Jordan I don't think there was one in all honesty well I mean I think there were some challenges but I don't think there was of course in a way that is you you can always create an allergy we saw somebody come along like a short form somebody that was supposed to be graded in that you know is in the mind of the public in the mind around NBA is even in Amman he said that he is better than a that never came along you know I think I never got the game became even clearer because nobody in their mind came along even really different type of situations that they felt was greater you know you have to be seen I think maybe you talk to you had better regular season record with any needed them they were challenged at least maybe an ad that we spoke about it with their because on a whole other level that a lady the Houston may need alot of big data to finally they did not have a collective it never played a better it is the final let it be known from the standpoint you know what were they gonna do they had to face a team a lot of one of you know but I don't that never happens I don't either but we saw that as a challenge but yeah I really don't think there was any other force in the game of basketball the came along that they felt threatened by but you know they did question the sales lady you know we really felt that they may not come out of these on you know the other side I don't think it will you know I don't want to get a muezzin Ali Frazier fight you know you lose the kid Norton and then all of a sudden you know George foreman takes enormous amounts in all these novels ever returned like me George foreman became the original plan you know exactly like there's No Way Out of useful to ever be your home you know like we never seen before you don't and I don't think the goals they set up because this is out of his face another team you know they're they're within the competition when the great teams that all will be sought there was a player on the model of it you know Michael had no idea how it was never that man I don't you know I'm and that's what they make the choice award for you know and even if there are issues which is also pretty right you know create a scene what is what is allowing you know Patrick Ewing left the next to go play with their piece on why it is that who's at the marquis is it would be in the UK there Molly telemarketing Kevin John Patrick you your honor I think even if it's working like a double play there I think it is very likely they still would not feel threatened because there was a long story Daily News historic legacy they had having to build up to get the plate and you know I think people who are listed in the one on the last day get a full one needed to get a couple years ago we have the resources and we went to a team that was that was almost impossible to break in order to get here and they would still exist in this great you know I don't think the bad boys because you know you get the different areas and different time periods but this last dance documentary series of the buzz around it has really elevated how good the Detroit Pistons bad boys era was in terms of hopes in terms of toughness it really has elevated their historical significance in my mind across the board sports fans more than their own documentary problems yes yes that's right right I said that I I have to watch the last dance I said you know there needs to be a ten part series on the bad boys with all the characters in with all the bravado that they had I actually this last day and so there's a lot of teams man you could do it Lakers you've been doing this and you could do with Celtic subway and it's really really easy you could do one on lebron with all his different moves from high school to Cleveland to Miami to the Lakers now I mean I just really love it you know you know what's interesting right when I called you because you had a camera follow him around right is final yet right I I I I he did that right in the lead up to his unfortunate passing but you know when you were talking about even if they had a super team with you in and then Barkley in him K. J. or the whoever in that mix that what you're telling me and I was going to be it's going to be my next question her school head did Michael need Pippen and Rodman to have that last dance together did he need those two if Pippen and Rodman never put on a bulls uniform is is that last dances at last dance documentary airing two more parts this Sunday I don't well there is no answer for that I don't think without without that we would not have the companies right now without thinking because I think another thing that could have been a player that was a good description you know the company might I don't think there was a perfect player out there to complement my life here I remember talking to my one time and here in the states of me what makes them so great is god he knew everything that he could you know everything he's got to do anything with her you say you can you know even better the game he was letting his left hand yeah Michael like I don't have a great love he got a little old and gets so his you know his left hand is one of his greatest strength I do not have you know your place all the ball defense and play from the point guard for the center it's not that I can't do he said might raise the visibility is much more limited immunity you know in what we do defensively is amazing because you can make a difference W. ballpark I can't do that you know he said I can't you know what the point like that either if you think the way he does this is exactly what they decided on a name you need to do the study didn't and I'm sorry your honor story just to make some money at the end because that I could believe that issue and I asked what they will who will win a one reason I want one and I was like god has never played a one on one before I'm like wow I don't know I'm like you got to keep it low we have never I've played one on one Michael here hill said Michael ferial how defensive I really think it was a matter of respect and a look at it they look at it and who is better to send it out the display itself off the court because eleven candidates which is weird but it's got a number will be two different people let me let me so they like to grow up to different individuals yeah I think it's on the somebody the other day if there's a reason you know Michael it is nothing you love and respect guys like ever brothers that is not what is best for you you don't think he's in he's not like tactic is not like Charles Oakley you need a life beyond strong economic Rodriguez you know who that is cool he's tied with those guys email me here were delayed he was the same we usually discuss you know what they're used to baseball the juniper buckle they want and they just they loved each other but they're just like brothers the two different individuals and if you don't I don't think it ever got to terror because they've always focusing on the things that they never had a brother challenge with each other you know how which is very interesting to me but that long as your question about where they have gotten past you know a good evening with it without guiding a lot I think without god and who's not I think without Rodman may be busy but you have to keep federation one it's four grant hill there on that second one of the biggest somebody to replace corporate insiders run I think what made it more interesting I think robin you know basically was one of the main reason they were able to get past Utah because of how much work you force col Maloney to call what you should do on a regular basis but who they get instead of that you know and if they see you know if they have somebody that they can mold that's gonna listen to Phil Jackson in a life and I doesn't have a ring up I think you know people that had this box it is shown here yeah I'm on the phone a lot you know I don't know who the powerful impact in the city got it and I think what's great great but I don't I don't I don't think life if you get somebody that is it is a lot of leverage to get somebody to.

"Who so closely associated the subject that is Joe Frazier with your father's. Well who died seventeen years ago at the age of sixty nine after his great career? What did it mean to you on a personal level? And how did it connect you with your father again? Well, my dad as you say passed away in two thousand two and he's really never far from my thoughts. You know, we, we were very close and admired him tremendously and his, his work, and, you know, I just never dreamed that I would be doing a book on Joe Frazier. I figured that was his that was his, you know area of expertise and his territory. And you know, editors over the years at asked me to write about Joe, they live. They knew that I lived in Philadelphia. In fact, the book editor in two thousand eight asked me to consider a biography of Joe and I rejected it at the time, but, you know, it was I was sitting in my office about, I don't know four or five years. After Joe died two thousand six two thousand sixteen. I guess it was and I just got the thinking that, you know, if somebody writes, his book, ten years from now, everybody that knew Joe is going to be virtually gone. And they'll have the write the book, they'll have to write the book from clips, you know, and sort of piece it together and not having any first-hand knowledge in, and as soon as I thought of that, you know, I became flooded with chills, I felt like there was it was some sort of cosmic traffic light. That was turning from red degreen, and I just had a sense that my father's spirit was with me, and I'm as I'm talking to you. Now, I have these same chills. I just feel like you know. He just, you know, it was with me every step of the way with this as I said, it's, it's a terrific testament, not only not only to Joe but a dad's legacy as well. If I may say, Mark ram juniors new.
