"And guide her and I was all right. I guess I'm placing my faith in this idea that this team when they get everyone back. Plays better than they did when they had everyone back except Miles Sanders in week one when they lost to the Washington football team. Well, I know, I know. All right, let's go to the phones. Ross Tucker with us here for an entire hour. It's 94 w PhD one Philadelphia As we broadcast from the tasty cakes Studios again, Ross for an hour phone calls right now, Rick is with his record afternoon. Good afternoon, gentlemen. How are you doing? Well, Rick Rick. A nice start. Y'all good to talk to Russ. I enjoy. He calls some of the military football games, sometimes lippy channels. Most recently. I think it was Arnie Citadel on I recognize the voice right away. So he's going to think the voice and he's very knowledgeable to he's going to listen from that point of view. A very cool, but just this Rankin real quick here, Rick Distinctive voices. Ross talker Gene Hackman, Morgan Freeman. Frank Morgan. Morgan Freeman first agreed. Xena. Hey, PAC Man's Got a great voice man hungry on him. I don't know why I'm here. Okay, thanks. I want to talk to you for a minute about a turning point I saw in the NFL. I was really enjoying watching a game a couple of weeks ago, and John also commented on it, and it was like icing on the cake that that game I was enjoying watching. It was also history was made. So it was the Seahawks at the Cardinal on a Sunday night game a couple of weeks ago. And I, you know, I really enjoyed it really tight game, although it'd end And then I learned the announcers were saying that that was the first time in the NFL that two quarterbacks had thrown for over $300. And ran for over 50. And I was thinking, you know, it took maybe 100 years for that to happen. I don't think it's going to take another. I think that's going to be become. Ah, no more frequently is what I'm thinking. Sure what game did? Yeah. Once these mobile young quarterbacks come into their own way we just saw last week to Ah. Emerge. I don't know if that's sustainable with the weapons in the injuries that they've got right now, But I do think that's what teams were tryingto. Create. I'm sure I'm shocked that hadn't happened. I mean, there's so many got me. Donovan could have done that. There's so many guys that could have already done it. Yes, wrecked. That will definitely happen. Moving forward with far greater frequency combination of quarterbacks and link up that combination. Hey, guys. I wanted to ask you about eagles scouting. I was looking. It looks to me like they have 17 people in the scouting department led by Andy Lyttle. Now the VP of player personnel was Couple of things. I was wondering, you know, First of all, what? You all think of great job. They're doing the second line. Notice something I was looking, and they had People listed as, like West Coast or North east or something. I didn't see me At first. I was alarmed, but I didn't see anybody assigned to the Southeast. But then I thought, Well, maybe it's more than one person so they don't just, you know, seeing the look anyway, I reckon. Yeah, we'll address that in a second and give me a great movie wedding related. Okay. My answer is a twofer. Um, the Lucia Shrek, and there was the wedding. Nobody wantedto happen. Princess Fiona and Lord Farquaad. And then the wedding that everybody wanted happen. Prices contract well way to give away the end of the movie. I haven't seen it, Rick. Which was the mayor of that, thanks to the phone call man, Ross and John, You're understanding me, Ross. You might have the most detailed understanding this the eagle scouting staff like Let's just start with Wydell. When Joe Douglas left. Rose was Andy Wydell, Really the best person in the world available to take over the job? Or is he just a guy one office over and they're like, you know what? Let's pump this guy into Joe Douglas is wrong. Which is he Good question. Ah, couple of things. First of all, Rick. Thank you for the kudos on the Army Games number one number two. I can assure you the Eagles have a Southie scout. I wouldn't worry about that. I don't know what you were looking at. But I can assure me they probably have to down there like you know, I will say this Being around a lot different organizations. The Eagles absolutely spare no expense, really, in every facet of the business to try toe, put a good team out there. And I think I think Howie Roseman was probably concerned that Andy Wydell was going to get was going to get poached. He's well respected. I think he thought he'd probably go. And be the second in command to Joe Douglas in New York. And so when that all went down, it seemed like I don't have any, you know, behind the scenes now it but it seemed like Joe Douglas. Wanted to bring Andy Wydell to New York to be the number two guy and Howie Roseman, you know, convinced him to stay and go into the Joe Douglas roll and probably also said, Listen. You know, the Eagles of the type of organization where you could become a GM. Someday you go the Jets and you're the second guy. You're just waiting three years to get fired. Probably well, Ross, real quick on the on the Joe Douglas. Thank you. We talked about this about three or four weeks ago, but let's bring it back into focus. Is now the Roan nine. I mean, if they go one in 15 or own 16, isn't it likely He gets fired in New York and then therefore becomes available for the Eagles, either in their number one or number two, and I don't think he's going anywhere. But couldn't they rehire him? If I mean do you think he will be fired in New York? Put it that way. I do not know. I do know. I think that they will fire the head coach and they'll keep the GM would be my guy. I would be surprised if Joe Douglas got fired. He is stockpiled a lot of draft picks. A lot of cap space. It be really Moron IC inspire him and almost as moronic as it would have been for the Jets to win that game last night and messed up on getting the number one overall pick. I mean, even if they like Donald, which I don't think they do. Do you imagine like you win one game or two games and that difference between you getting an absolute King's ransom for the Trevor Laurence Pick, or Trevor Laurence? Versus being like the third pick. And just getting some like the Lyman Enemy is crazy. Let's go to bum in Levittown Bomb You're on W They followed by our door. Don't Well, bomb. It's a bomb. Good. Good man. A man. I think I live in the alternate universe, man. Um We talked about bringing back Joe Douglas. Tell me what job with bringing him back. That's best. My first day He was there right with how we would all these pits the house make so I'm not really looking for, uh, Joe Douglas back, but my main thing is this car getting rid of Carson went talk. It's like Don't sound like they'll win a game manager You know, just somebody who's going Man is the game. I'd rather have that than a game wrecker. I mean, right now. Yeah. It will think about it. What makes the game manager good? The same thing that makes the game manager Good. But what make cars what will was better? Running the football. Yeah. I mean, Yeah. Look, I would say yeah, Yeah, yeah. I mean, come on, Joe. What? What? What I was going to say is the main the main the two main things to make a game manager, a game manager, I think are a good defense. And and the quarterback, not turning it over, which is aided by running the football. Also exactly which would aid Carson went. All I'm saying is true, but I, but I also want him to be better than you know what he'll be best that let's just hand the ball off. I mean, yeah, they should do it more. But that's not what Carson Was supposed to be. Carson was supposed to be Phenomenal and if not that very good. And if not that pretty good, And if not that average he's been horrendous..
What To Watch For When Patriots-Jets Square Off On Monday Night Football, Boston
"Monday night. Football jets take on the patriots. And it will be joe. Flacco starting quarterback tonight for new york. Sam darnold still bothers sore shoulder. There's anyway that they know the patriots are bad. The jets and joe douglas. Sam wants to take a little bit of time to make sure this thing is. He'll let's put joe flacco out there and play his game. Let the opposite by. Let me remind you joe. Flacco actually has beaten the patriots in big games. Yeah oh that was like a century ago stuff was going on on the day listening. I got nothing but respect for joe flacco because of those games. I don't care what mean he was great at one point. But it's just it's over now for him. He is shot

"Charlie said. This New York narrative. Let go because you, Archie Manning and Joe Douglas. Say it. That means Oh, that's right. That's right, Greg McElroy said. He has a great family move on. What was he's a family guy family. Probably give a family is a family. So Tom Brady One. How many Super Bowls before he had a family? By the way, I look ended this morning with family men proud Father and J is about to be a father to you. Joe Douglas just needs to keep their pretty well in my career, and I don't think I was a family band to be Kitty. Just say it to be young, athletic and in New York. We'll get to that some other time. That's got to be in a late night show Morning Rated R version. I think they're Jeter did just Five. You're two words. Gift baskets. Yes, it worked out Well for yes, and Jeter. Now, by the way, is a family man. For those of you that this car services we've got a little too over. But remember for Douglas, you go now We're telling the truth. You go back on your word to Douglas. You better watch out with those New York Post back page headlines. We will, That's all I'm saying. That's all I was saying. When you go back Keyshawn J. Wills even presented by progressive insurance. All of our guests, including R. Patz expert who's going to be here in 30. Seconds join us on the shell Pennzoil Performance line. And this is so apropo because after this long discussion about the Jets, who did they have next? They got the Pats on Monday night Football. Let's talk a little New England many years. Tom Brady kind of like he was covering up for some of those deficiencies. And now that he's not there, we could kind of see.

"Are they going to come in and earned the respect of the vets and I think he was able to do that from an early early standpoint and camp and but mostly because obviously because of the ability but a lot of it because of the way carrying himself and so I it's fun to watch him and Jordan Jenkins and Jordan Willis and bash go at it and they're you know those guys are. Teaching them little tricks that pass rushers are gonNA are GonNa try to do with their hands and you're watching him grow on a daily basis with his technique and fundamentals, and so You know we're all excited to to watch him play. Talking to Joe Douglas on the fan make a jet fan feel better about the wide receiver position right now because you've been dealing with a lot of injuries there of course, Robbie Anderson going to the panthers. So it hasn't been great and camp with the amount of time that guys have missed. So to give us the glass half full at the wide receivers. Yea. I mean, honestly the glasses half full I mean we a we have we had to injuries for two to outside guys and Denzel Ms Param. Camp up before the injury Denzel obviously tweaked his hamstring early camp. But the good news is both those guys you know they're they're they're going to be back and these these were not long term issues and in the meantime we were able to get a lot of quality reps, two guys that you needed developed and they needed the reps and so that that help them and then you know we. have. A lot of we have a lot of faith in our inside weapons and guys like Jamison crowder Gaas like Chris Herndon which wasn't you know wasn't often said about our season last year but not having Chris Herndon and the chemistry that the natural chemistry that him and Sam developed as rookies that that hurt our offense and so you have Chris Herndon you Ryan Griffin had a great year last year. Trayvon. West Go. Really had a really really good camp and then you mix in crowder Barrios. So we feel good about those inside of weapons our backs can all help in the past game now now it's getting are outside guys back up to speed getting paramount back in the offense because he was like I said, he was doing really well before the injury then getting getting men's going. So you know we are definitely keeping. The glass half full. You know a final question for me for Joe Douglas, GM and the New York jets, and that is you know I read where you were talking about everybody over there..

"Who It is and we'll have them on and they can. Okay Yea Joe in the meantime, let's run down a few media members of cover. The tells you like them or not. All right. Okay. So we talked about rebuilding the offensive line. We knew you would the second she got here. You brought an all the new starters. Y- drafted the biggest guy on earth. So as you head into the season, even though there's no preseason games and and you know better than anybody takes a little while for a new options of line to Gel I gimme the Gimme the truth on where these guys all right now as we head into week one. Look I mean the these guys have gotten better every day and You had a good feeling just when we started the these virtual meetings and just just to see how professional these guys were, and he just couldn't wait to get him on the grass and start building chemistry, and so we're we're over a month of time on the field and I feel these guys who have come together they've and they've just busted their butts every day to try to try to build chemistry get on the same page coach pollock's done a great job with these guys. But these guys these guys have a lot of a lot of pride. They're they're very competitive they WANNA. Be Good. They Love Ball and and you see you see kind of permeate. Through the rest of the the offense and so you know a lot a lot expected of them this year and they and they you know they. They love that they love that kind of that opportunity Joe Douglas General Manager of the New York jets joins boomer GIO for a couple more minutes you know Kevin. Colbert. The GM, the Pittsburgh steelers said, he's GonNa find it very hard to draft a player who did not play in twenty twenty somebody who opted out or maybe somebody that's playing in the big ten or PAC twelve that have basically shut down their seasons Do you concur with that and is it going to be hard to draft somebody who didn't play? Yeah I saw those comments and part of me wondered if if some PAC twelve and big ten coaches had got got to him on that one but You know it's it's valid point boomer in and you know you look at, you look at guys and you know Gaza might not have played for various reasons before the pandemic for year versus guys that have fresh tape It's always you know you there's always a more of a comfort level knowing a guy has played recently he's in football shape. You know it's it's just There's there's less of a fear of the unknown with. Okay. What is this guy been doing for year? You know I think for us we're we're GONNA, take it all those decisions on a case. By case basis, you know we we have a profile of the. Type of guys were looking for you know it starts with the talent and then it then it goes with the intangibles. So those are all discussions that will have the throughout the the next you know six seven months. You know you told us when we went out to lunch with you that when you are with the Baltimore Ravens, you are in charge of the undrafted college free agents and you took great pride in those guys that you could find the diamond in the rough that was going to be able to make the team..

"It's not your fault I mean you know social media has a lot to do with fans have a lot to do with it. The player himself has a lot to do with it. I. I know that general managers do not like to talk about players that are no longer on their team. However, this was considered your best player on defense he wanted out. When Seattle came with that offer I'm assuming that you had to say, wow, I can't believe that somebody offered me as much as they did to get Jamal Adams how hard of a decision was that for you? It was a tough decision because you know he he he is. He is a fantastic player. And You know we we knew I think you know mid mid to late June I think we start having conversations with with with John and Seattle and we knew that you know it was an aggressive pursuit and so it got to the point where it became just a situation that we we couldn't turn down and how this was going to help us for years to come. So you know. It's it's unfortunate to lose a good player But at the end of the day, we felt like this was the right thing to do for the New York jets. So watching this unfold was interesting because i. was the instagram comment where he said that maybe it's my time here is up then there was the video of him in Dallas when some guys that try to come to the cowboys and I'm trying. And then I'm thinking Joe Douglas. Keep saying we're we'll get to the contract is standing his ground maybe something can be worked out and then he went to Menashe and he trashed the coach in the newspaper and I said well, he's really done. Did it now years out of here when it came to those things that Jamal Adams was doing how much of that played into the fact that all right we have to trade him Honestly you know there's a reason that those those things were said and done and we understand that I don't think any of us took it personally you know. We just took it as part part of business. It didn't it didn't affect. Our decision to to keep them or trade them. I just think we got to the point with Seattle where the offer was just so good and it's just something we couldn't pass up when are you going to get your own twitter account instead current account and start putting out your own stuff. That'll be never never okay. I didn't think. So I'm not a big social media guy you know speaking of media you guys actually. Along with the NFL. Took away the credential of Monique Mehta and what was the determining factor in getting rid of his credential and not allowing him to be covering the team on a daily basis. Yeah you know I I think that's probably a question. The that's better suited for for our our You know the other people in our in our organization you know those kind of things. Those were some discussions in house but you know at the at the end of the day there. Quite quite a few people involved with a decision like that..

"So the NFL has mandated that teams can play crowd noise and music, but can't go over eighty decibels. So the question is how many times will new England go over eighty decibels when the opposing team's inside their ten yard line. So there's GonNa? Be Some guy with a Desa Monitor would you call that thing to sit there and try to like some NFL officials going to be holding up a gauge going up Eighty decibels turn it down. Please I'm not an expert on this but I know our next guest is and he is the general manager of the New York jets and that is Joe Douglas he joins boomer and Geo this morning Joe Good morning how are you my man fellow good and how you guys doing we're doing great man. testable question for you. So long time no talk we got a lot to catch up. We do have a lot to catch up and decibels being one of them. So so it's eighty decibels. Do you do you have any idea what that means and how that's going to be monitored by the NFL or no? Yeah. So I think it's eighty one decibels is the Max and that doesn't include any fans that are in in in attendance So I I really don't know how they're going to do that with When you include the fans but I think there's a I think there's a four to five decibel range, but it can't be higher than that eighty one. So you figure that new, England's going to break that a couple times at least a game. Don't you think? So. Well we'll see I mean we'll have Gaza monitor that I'm sure all right. Saw I've been looking at over the roster and everything else and look you got your hands all over this thing now, and I know there is some controversy because you have some money that you have in spent as a matter of fact. You have the third most money on the salary cap to spend and you know I saw an article where you were talking about how you are trying to set the team up for the future because you really don't know in the NFL does it really know truly what the salary cap is going to be moving forward without fans coming to games? Is that true? True Boom and we're sitting here and we know we know exactly what the worst case scenario is an and it's going one, ninety, eight, million, two, hundred, seventy, five. So you know working with Dave associates who heads up our football administration and you know we just make sure we have the best plan you know working from worst-case scenario on up and you know hopefully we'll. We'll We'll fill in some of those blanks as we get closer to next year. But you know I think we have a pretty good plan moving forward. You know kind of looks like the same thing. New. England's doing because right now new England is the number one team with the most money. Available under the CAP. So you guys are trying to stay in lockstep with them while still trying to be able to compete with them on the field and I would think that starts with your quarterback..
Adams says Gase not the right leader for New York Jets
"A day that the NFL play association border representatives approved a plan they'll have NFL training camps opened a schedule next week. Jamal Adam said Bush step aside like from the movie pulp Fiction by putting out and it all came out in an interview with mini smelt of the New York Daily News the same day he called out The brain Trust of the Jets would be a clear clear understatement, Norman that NFL news like this happens when it votes like training camps are going to start on time. Even this covert 19 times. You don't usually move that off the top Gemma Adams and interview said about coach Adam Gates and I quote I don't feel like he's the right leader for this organization to reach the promised land. As a leader really bothers me is that he does not have a relationship with everybody in the building. He didn't stop there. He also said at the end of the day Gaze does not address the team. If there's a problem in the locker room, he lets another coach address the team and we're playing like blank, and we're losing. He does not address the entire team as a group at halftime. He'll walk out of the locker room and let another coach handle it. End quote. That last part Freddy Ahh, Alice in the New York Daily News with with, you know, a guy who's been on a regular the showman Ismet up, but That last one, but that's not true. Somebody. Somebody is stepping up, right and saying, Hang on a minute. That happened One time, you know, or whatever you are, it hasn't happened. You see anybody come out in case his defense today from New York jets. I've been searching social media like I'm a detective with a bloodhound on my side, trying to find it. Nothing. No code, no Peep Player coach player. Not even a family member, Adam Gaze Nobody And then on the other side, you have GM Jo Douglas, who, according to the New York Daily News back in January. Old Jamal Adams. I want you to be a jet for life Contract. 1st 1st contract first offers coming You know, after I talk to management and the ownership Then it was Combine. Then the draft went by, and then Joe Douglas over a six month stretch. Contradicted himself, according to the New York Daily News, and Jamal Adams and one from we want you to be a jet for life contract coming to prove it. Meaning Go, you go prove yourself that you can do this year in year out. Ah and signed a bunch of second and third tier players. Very few. Jamal Adams. Yeah, you were promised one thing and shown the door. So I understand why he is upset. But now Jets players are going to have to deal with this other jets. Coaches are going to have to deal with this. But man, you look at the Jets organization as a whole right now from the Woody Johnson allegations from CNN. To this You could have had much of a worse week. If you're the New York Jets.

"I'm going to have to get on them for his His tardiness here. What time is he do like two minutes ago? It's only nine five right now. He's maybe he's trading somebody maybe signing somebody could be. I guess but really. He needs to put that on. Hold to talk to us if he's been great. Oh Trade Conversations. Could we pick this up and like fifteen minutes? I got a call boomer and Geo and to me. It's a little to me. It's a little disrespect on jobs party. Yeah definitely Eh. I would have to agree. Know we haven't Ataman before on the show. I mean we. We spent some time with them but that was a conversation away from the air. So this is the first time he's joined the show and it's you know him being laid. It's just not a great first impression. Oh here he is jets general manager. Joe Douglas we were just talking Joe with just turned nine six and we expected to have you on ninety five. So it's a terrible first impression that you've given us here. We didn't. We didn't call him soon enough. That the hell fan over there. Are you guys doing this morning? What are you doing doing well doing? Well trying to Get back as I feel like a bear coming out of hibernation seeing. What's going on the rest of the world? I've been buried in In free agency in the draft last month and a half so But the excited excited about the Do players we've added to the team. Well congratulations on your first draft and and controlling your first draft so what you expected from the standpoint of being the man now making the decisions. I think we had such a good process. I feel I feel. It was a unique experience. Obviously with the circumstances going on but I think it also brought brought us all together in a in a strange way With the technology that we're able to use You know were our collaboration with the coaches The it department such a good job. Set this all up at our homes remotely. But I really feel like we had great meetings great conversations. Gaza able get you. We were able to disagree No one you put your feelings and your ego side. We Disagree Hash Things Out. In a productive way they come to to the best The best buy your best solution for the New York jets so I feel like we had a good process and it it. It feels good doing it with this group of guys. One of the things that struck me is how comfortable and happy you seemed after making these picks going through this the first time as being the guy of course and then it being virtual draft. And you're in your house but you seem very comfortable and happy and the kids would come over so I mean it seemed like this went very well from you just for me. Judging getting a look into your home is is that the way you really felt inside. I had say it took a couple of days to get. There was very uncomfortable for me being away from the office Because we we've moved in our houses at number like our office wasn't like the office was set up so it took a few days just to get everything the way you wanted it but once once we got into a flow once everybody got used to using the technology. It it just it was. It was remarkable how everything came together and then You know having having everyone right here on your bed you know. Talking through scenarios in the draft You're able to bow from groups to group to to to get You know have one on ones with guys that you have a question. It really did make comfortable so that he felt like you're actually in the war room even though you're at your desk by yourself and then the family being men the room over that was your thousand added bonus that. I didn't really expect I didn't really feel until after we made the first selection and that was a that was an awesome awesome thing know. I would actually say that. Most general managers probably felt the same way and coaches to that matter because when you watch all their homes and how their families were around him. It was something different that you guys are not used to now. I know you're going to get a lot of questions about MCI back. Then we'll get to him in a second. Is there anybody else in this group? That drafted that. You were surprised that they were there when it was your turn the pick. Yeah I'd say there. There are several guys You know we were. We were obviously sweating When we traded back from forty eight fifty nine I was not. I was not going to be completely surprised if Denzel Men's I wouldn't have been surprised. Us taking the first five fixing second round So we were. We were sweating on that one And there's a little bit of surprised that he was there fifty nine and I don't know if you guys saw the call but you know he's not he's not happy about that and I love that chip that he has so You know that that was a little bit of surprise. I'd say I'd say Bri Saul was another one You know he was. He was a guy that we were a little bit surprised as their fifth round Actually I mean we. We were sweating all these guys to be honest Just where we had them in our rankings and just how our board fell so those? Those are two guys that that stood out though. So why did you guys settle on MCI Becton at number eleven and not worth it was still on the board or one of these wide receivers? That were much ballyhooed that went in the first round. Yeah no those are all the scenarios that we talked about And we we were able to have four three or four strategy meetings where we go through every scenario and everyone has an opportunity to speak their mind. This guy this guy. I think this was a unique opportunity to get off a tackle that everybody was excited about That has a lot of unusual unique physical traits and MCI With his legs to strength his mentality A guy that can really affect the past game and the run game for us and our our mission. Our mission from the outset was we. We ever WANNA see SAM's full potential. We have to protect him. You Know He. He can't be can't be taking shots he can't he can't Can't be take shots from every angle? He's gotta be up on his feet. You know so We have to. We have to take care of that first and then everything else will fall into place so that that was really our mission from the outset. You know people say that it's a risk reward. Pick that he is so big that people really don't know what to expect from him in all your years being part of drafts with the Ravens. The Eagles the bears and now the jets. Who is the guy that he compares most to in your past twenty having to talk with a friend that's been in the business a long time and you know in the in the conversation came up with MCI? It was like this guy just reminds you an old school old school left. Tackle from days gone by you know just just the giant big men like the you know like I mean Jay. I'm not and I don't want I'm not gonNA comp him to you know hall of fame players but just you just as far as the measurable are concerned you know just big men like Orlando Pace and John Ogden and Willie Roaf and so like the we were just having that conversation and That that's that's those are some of the names that came up. I'm not competent him. Those those guys but You know he presents that unique that unique combination of size length and athleticism. So let's talk a little bit about the quarterback you select by you James Morgan and now we hear that he's a very bright kid. He was coached Who the coach down there at. Fiu'S WHO JOE which. David Wright Butch Davis all right so butch Davis I would think would be a guy that you would trust when you talk to him about his quarterback if in fact you did talk to them which. I would assume that you did. What are the attributes that that major select him before? Say like a guy. I like Jake from yeah. Coach Davis has been around a lot of good players and his career. Miami North Carolina and pro football. So we definitely lean leaned leaned on him for Sir. Great information when it came to to Morgan. I think when I think when we watch the tape we saw the sides. We saw the armed strength Frankly we saw. We saw accuracy I think he was one of the leaders in college. Football and dropped passes so We we saw. We saw those numbers as well But when we when what really got all excited when he got we got room with them and we started just talking with them and start going over his plates his offense kids tape and you know first of all. He's got great energy Second his recalls is unbelievable. He's he's extremely smart. So we just thought this guy that we it's court. It's a quarterback league. You can't have enough and if the opportunity fell Where player like this was available We were going to take a shot. Quick thing for me Joe in regards to the quarterback position. I've been on this radio station now saying for the last two months that I worry about your backup quarterback position and I'm not so sure that this kid's ready to be the back of I don't know you'll you'll see and you'll be able to tell when you see him on the field and then of course you have. David fails I is this. You know the way the quarterback rooms going to be or are you guys going to be searching for a potential veteran? That could actually come in and help you win. Some Games as opposed to going through what you went through last year. Yeah I think those are all things we're GONNA set over the next days and weeks and months. Hopefully we can get back together soon and really get the physical session the assessments on the field But now that that's going to be something that's going to be fluid with us You know It's I think we have great competition in the room as it stands right now and they have three guys and Morgan fails and white. That can all push each other But at the end of the day we're GONNA. There's a chance to upgrade any position. We're GONNA WE'RE GONNA take a look at it talking to jets general manager Joe Douglas on boomer and Geo on the fan and CBS sports network. Third Round Pick Ashton David. I of the two third round picks Ashton Davis out of cow. Some jet fans will say looking at the depth chart that you really need a safety in this spot. I mean this seems to be more of luxury than need with a pick that that was that high in the third round. So give us your thinking on selecting Ashton Davis the type of player. He is and why you took them where you took them. Well I guess I guess duties in the beholder view just to safety. I'm sure you could question it. I think for us we. We didn't view ashes just to save the reviewed Ashton as a guy that come in and bring versatility to our back. End Can play multiple roles with his athleticism with his instincts and with his speed and ball skills. We've felt this was a player that could that we could utilize a lot of different roles to help greg defense and not to mention the fact that he could be he he can get a chance to be a dynamic special teamer so He's another guy that wants wants everyone was able to get around him you setting just as impressively young man is as you've been around so You know we we. We see an opportunity to use. He's asking a lot of roles just excited to get it in here. Get Him an ear and start working with them. You're a second round pick was edge. Rusher Jabari is Anita and he's out of Florida and we've been down this road with edge rushers out of Florida as as as late as last year and that didn't work out so well How do you compare this kid too? Polite who wasn't a total bust last year for the jets. Yeah I think I think what Jafari you're getting someone with a lot of passion for football. I think you're getting A guy that has an excellent take off Who's a sudden twitched up mover There's a lot of explosiveness in this in this young man's body You know obviously. He was hindered by the injury. I think there is a couple of guys on our classes. Season was was cut short because of Injury or they. They struggled through injury throughout the year. so I think that hindered its production. This year thinking you went back to the year prior This guy was a disruptive discusses very disruptive player He's a guy that can penetrate gaps. You can get in the Backfield Explosive Guy you've got unbelievable voter. I mean this guy. This guy will track the ball as hard as it can so really really like really like where he is. Not only a physical standpoint but from a mentality toughness Africa standpoint as well. So Joe we keep hearing all these questions about Jamal. Adams people are making something out of nothing personally with..
From Brady to Carr, ranking Bears' quarterback options in NFL free agency, draft
"Free agency. Starting soon as we mentioned earlier in the show March eighteenth four. Pm teams can actually out signings the signings and the wide receiver classes fascinating Jj. Because I think mostly because it sort of matches up with the draft class. This is a loaded wide receiver draft class studs and studs and studs. Nobody that's like necessary. I I like I tend to think see lamb and Jerry. Judy can be. I don't want to call them like Julio Jones. Aj Green types. Because that I think does a disservice to really any young player coming to the League to to compare them too borderline hall. Julio definitely the hall of fame. Aj Borderline Hall of fame to compare them to that type of player. But there's a great group of guys who look like they can be viable starters in the NFL out of the gate however they will have to compete with teams who resigned teams will have to decide. Do they want to ask somebody like that or do they want to size like? Aj Green should he make free agency? let's go through your top five wide receivers. Who's at number five number? Five number five. I have Randall COBB. Yes sorry I remember number five. I Have Randall. Cobb. Randall COBB. Of course coming off that season with the cowboys really difficult to see how they're going to be able to pay him And so as I was going through this and I thought to myself well thought. Where could he ended up? In fact I didn't think that's about self depot. Ask me where he could end up. I would have to tell you on your and some wanted to tell you that. I'm looking at an Indianapolis Colts a team. That was really struggling to throw the ball down the field last year. Now lot of that adds do of course which cover said. I understand that but I've never really been impressed with the wide receiving group that the colts have of course. They thought that they were going to have a few more options That did not work out with Devon punches. Who dealt with injury for most of the season. So Randall COBB. He's GONNA turn thirty before next season. He's at nine. Nfl seasons he had a eight hundred plus yards last year. I like him. What the colts and whoever their quarterback could be yes so it's interesting the question is would you rather have a guy like rental car bounced back nicely. Who Fits with the perfect slot style of of the modern? Nfl You've got three wide receiver sets etc etc. You can win outside and in some cases might be too old that now he's going to be thirty before the season starts or would you rather dabble in the shod. Perrin and sweepstakes and I might be inclined to agree with you. I like the PERSAD. Payment freaks me out like what? You're really like this Guy Ozzie. Newsome couldn't get this guy right and you're telling me that now like Jameis. Winston fixed him. I don't know if I'm buying it entirely woods. I would run away from shop Perriman. eighty might be fantastic human being but in terms of on the field play. I think that it was a flash in the pan how he sort of came on there in November and December for the bucks Certainly James with the five thousand passing yards sort of inflated his six hundred forty five receiving yards Paran- I just had issues for most of his career and I'm not willing to take a few weeks from last season. He's turned the corner. I kind of tend to agree with you. I wouldn't be opposed to like a one year not too pricey deal with precise payment but I would not want to make some big splash on that guy Given what's out there. It is interesting to this class offers. A lot of slot options like Geronimo. Alison is their Nelson Aguilar. Philip door set You can uh Devin funchess. Maybe didn't make the cut for. Jj surprise there. He's more of a tight end. Not a slot guy But then also demarcus Robinson who was very effective in Kansas City system. I think there's a lot of speed slack is out there so if I were if I were General Manager would probably at the top of the market. Do their own thing. Because I don't want to overpay for top of the market I would then sign a slack. If I got a young quarterback here I would sign a guy for agency at a lower cost and then go out and get by number one in theory in the in the draft. So that's probably why those guys didn't make the top five and I would tend to agree with you. Who's your number four on this list number four Robbie Anderson Levin love and coming off that season with the New York jets My best fit for him is the New York jets Because Gosh they really if they lose him. I don't know what they're gonNA do at the receiver position. They absolutely have to upgrade even by keeping him. They need to upgrade to upgrade that offensive line as well but seven hundred seventy nine receiving yards last season. He'll be twenty seven this upcoming year if enough teams and and if the jets WANNA mess around with this Joe. Douglas wants to mess around with us. He has been In conversations with with Robbie Anderson's representation if some teens get involved here and this is taken care of at the very started illegal tampering window or before. The price could go up on Robbie Anderson because of his age because of his speed because of what he did last season and then you can start approaching. Fourteen fifteen million dollars per year. I think the jets absolutely have to knock this out early and if they mess this up in some way if they decide not to bring him back. I'm looking at a place that he could go to looking at the Philadelphia Eagles who obviously could always use a upgrade. Their I the interesting seeing there may be some overlap there but the eagles need help it wide receiver. But I hope probably Anderson's faculty jets. I kinda liked that idea and I do think. There's a little bit of like say the Shaw Jackson to his game. That's an insult to the Sean Jackson as fast as to Sean Jackson Robbie interesting could be more of a position. He's he's more of a like he's a bigger body type of guy but who also possesses that deep speed. That might be complementary for the other pieces that eagles have so. I don't hate that idea. If I don't know how Roseman takes a deep dive a free. Hd but he's got cast a bird so maybe it happens a May I ask your number three is and then I started to say Emmanuel Sanders is your third wideout. He is my third wide out. And it's really just because age. He's GONNA turn thirty three. Where do I have him? The obviously he's not going to be in San Francisco. I initially till depot the Carolina Panthers and I said the Carolina Panthers because I'm not entirely sure the panthers are convinced. Honesty Smith is not convinced that they have a number one wide receiver they have DJ more. They have Curtis Sam. You hope that. Dj More is going to be that but what they seem to be lacking. Is that fantastic veteran presence in there and after I spent a lot of time will in the month of January with the San Francisco. Forty niners covering their postseason games. What I learned from a depot Samuel from kindred born was just how much manual sanders mentor. Those guys those young group of players coming up and how they were able to really improve their game early in their career after the trade for manual. Sanderson San Francisco did so I look at a team like the Carolina Panthers and I say. Oh those young guys could really benefit from a guy like Emmanuel Sanders however Emmanuel Sanders is kind of like Andrei Dala in in that like he elite should and probably only wants to play for a championship. Contender right. He's been with. The broncos just went to another super bowl and so we're talking about contenders we're talking about teams that need wide receivers. The New England Patriots is. They are trying to retain Tom Brady. That would be fantastic. Get sound radio. Robert Kraft and Bill Belichick said. Hey We got you Emmanuel Sanders and we got you this two or three year contract to finally finish your career in New England. What you say Tommy. Now that's great call. I think if you're the Patriots and this was the delicate line that they have to sort of walk with Tom Brady is. Can you go out into the mark like once we get to that noon at noon? It it's eleven fifty. Nine fifty nine on Monday can the Patriots manage in the span of about Let's see twelve thirty six hours. Thirty brought to us as a forty eight hours. Fifty two hours is probably right in fifty two hours. Can they manage to tamper their way into landing? Somebody like Mandal Sanders. Somebody like Hunter Henry and successfully like a- convinced Tom Brady to return if that's what they ultimately want their plan to be and if it is. I think that could be you know like. That's that's certainly a blueprint to having Tom. Brady back in New England. But I think you're going to have to get guys. Just beef up the receiving core for him if you want him to come back in my opinion all right the last two guys in this list that they're going to be the same for everybody. You could flip them if you want to Depending on your opinion of home and away splits for one guy in age for the other guy number two guy. Aj greed number. One Guy. Maury Cooper I beast I mean these are the first of all. There's a chance either. Guide makes it the free agency or Cooper could get transitioned franchise tag the transition tag depending on the CBA depending on what happens attack. Prescott's contract AJ Green. It does sound like the bengals franchise tag him but he throws a fit and says he's going to refuse to play for him then. Maybe that doesn't happen. What led you to stack these guys in this particular way. Jj Yes so I have AJ green at number two. Only because of agent injury concerns that He has missed something. Like twenty four the past twenty five games that the bengals have played due to injury So that is my issue with him. Amari Cooper last. We saw him was not getting the ball thrown as much his way as should have certainly against the Philadelphia Eagles. I felt that he still has it. Obviously he's young much younger than Aj. Green who I believe is turning thirty two this year. Amari Cooper is currently twenty five. He will be twenty six before the start of the season so If a Jake Reed were healthy he would be my number one with a bullet. No doubt about it on about his health and then So in terms of fits right We believe that. Aj agrees with the bengals eight. We'll extend the franchise tag if they do not then. I think that we can reignite the does job want to go to Cincinnati rumors and so just for the sake of argument. I through the raiders in there as a landing spot for A. J. Green. But of course I'm not putting too much effort into A. J. Green out to one of the thirty one other teams. He's going to Cincinnati. As far as Mark Cooper. I had no idea how the San Francisco Forty niners would do it in terms of contract and money but I have cooper going to the forty niners if he does not end up with the cowboys but again. They're the cowboys to do. Everything they can. To Keep Amari Cooper traded a first round pick for. It made a lot of sense. Not Not immediately when they made the trade form right.

"joe douglas" Discussed on The MMQB Podcast with Peter King
"Welcome to the Peter King podcast entering week four of the National Football League season the one hundredth professional football season in America and an awful awful lot of stories on the field now after the Antonio Brown stuff fizzled out and we're going to get to a few of them in this podcast I'm going to be he joined by Devan Canard the linebacker for the Detroit lions the Lions surprisingly have started to Oh in one big wins over the chargers an an eagles the last two weeks after a disappointing opening game tie in Arizona so we'll talk to John Canard. They got a huge game on Sunday. Kansas City will fly Detroit. It'll be the battle of two very very good teams and in in the motor city on Sunday secondly. I'M GONNA play an interview I did in the summer. When I was on my training camp tour with Joe Douglas The new general manager manager of the New York jets. He's going to be a huge factor in whether the New York jets can finally get rid of that very long shadow from the team. That's two hundred miles away to the northeast in Foxborough can Joe Douglas finally helped the New York jets slay the Patriot free at dragon. We'll talk to him got a great story about the scouting of Joe Flacco in two thousand eight and even before that when he was sort of a lowly Lee Scout for the Baltimore Ravens so we'll get into that in just a little bit after hearing from devan Canard and after hearing a couple of thoughts on and on two teams of interest to me right now number one the Cleveland browns. I think there's been an awful lot of criticism first year head coach Freddie Kitchens. I think some of it is entirely justified. His play calling has been suspect. He's game management a tremendous been suspect but I also want to point out a couple of things I went back and I watched that last drive again you know the Cleveland browns down down to the Rams on Sunday night football twenty to thirteen with two minutes and forty six seconds left in the game they had a great great opportunity to go down and tie it or perhaps to win it in the last three minutes with a drive that started at the Cleveland Forty three but every every time they started to make a little progress on that drive. They shoot themselves in the foot. They got so many breaks. They got two first downs by penalty of of the rams. It was everything was handed to him. Why didn't it work. I'll give you my two culprits and neither of them are named Freddy Kitchens in terms of his play calling. I did not like some of the decisions that Baker Mayfield made he was two of seven on that drive and threw an interception to end the game that was bad and though I didn't like the fact that Odell Beckham junior out of eight throws on that last drive a by Baker Mayfield that Odell Beckham Junior was the target on zero of them. Beckham is healthy. He should have gotten two or three targets target's. That is why you brought in all world receiver. I think the second thing that bothers me about that. Drive is just watching that it. It just seemed disorganized. It just seemed that the Cleveland browns were not in any way a well oiled machine a false start by Joel Tonio at one point right near the two minute warning. This was just not a team that looked ready for prime time and the other thing about the Cleveland Browns is I did not pick them to make the playoffs before the year. I thought that the spotlight and the lights that we're going to be on them especially early in the year three Primetime Games in the first five weeks was just simply going to be too much and it is proven to be too much. It's it's very very difficult especially when you have a rookie coach who a year ago was a running backs coach with the Cleveland Browns. Nobody knew who he was and now coming into this year he's famous. Everybody's looking at them. While Freddie Kitchens they took a big chance on naming him the the head coach coach and I think not many people actually looked at the schedule early in the season so the browns now are one and into and listen to their next four games at Baltimore at San Francisco Seattle the ATL at home and at New England three of four opponents were they will be significant underdogs rightfully awfully so in a game against Seattle where they could be an underdog at home you know so when you when you're trying to fall in love with the team just just look at everything and not just some of the great shiny objects they brought in in the off season one other point about another team and that is is Washington so Washington right now sits oh and three and for all intents and purposes we've games against the Patriots and forty niners and Vikings coming up in the first half of the season. This team is going nowhere fast but a couple of things that really bothered me about Monday night when they were obliterated early by the Chicago bears and what this is this just. I don't know why this bothered me as much as it did but when you watch this team play when you watch Washington play they eh gave Chicago so many advantages so many short fields and and yet Chicago really was not a dominant force worse in this game but the starting quarterback case keenum who is a bridge to Duane Haskins. He's a bridge. That's all he is. He's a bridge to the rookie quarterback who Dan Snyder really wanted on this team who was a unanimous pick of the Organization and the coaching staff so they really wanted Dwayne Haskins so they're all in three and case keenum commits five turnovers in this game and afterwards afterwards and in the day after when Jay Gruden head coach who's now fifteen games below five hundred of the The Washington team when you look at this what's amazing. Is that in essence out of it now but it instead of basically saying yeah we're gonNA play the kid. We're GONNA play Dwayne Haskins. They're going to stay with case keenum. I mean you have to explain that to me unless Dwayne Haskins. Just simply isn't ready and we don't know that but I I don't understand this entire fire season in Washington is about one thing getting Dwayne Haskins ready for two thousand twenty and beyond it is a very short sighted thing by this coaching staff and by this organization to not play Haskins and by the way it's also totally ridiculous that they haven't blinked acton their standoff with their left tackle. Trent Williams he should have been traded for a ransom to Houston at the end of August instead Houston went out and got Laremy Tunsil and now there wouldn't be a team ready to pay the same kind of ransom for Trent Williams but he definitely definitely should be traded. It's ridiculous that they're sticking with him. Almost out of spite and just I don't like what's going on in Washington at all and whether they fire fire Jay Gruden now or at some point during the season or after the season. This team needs an entirely new direction so let's move ahead to to the podcast to the conversations we're going to start with Devan Canard linebacker with the Detroit lions huge game this weekend Kansas City at Detroit and Canard who opened the season with a three sack afternoon in his hometown against the Arizona cardinals and against Cuyler Murray we talked about that and several other matters one of the main stays of the surprising Detroit Lions Defense Defense the Lions have started to o n one and they're part of the very very strong. NFC North this year and what a test they have this weekend Kansas City chiefs come to Detroit with a high powered offense with with the quarterback Patrick Mahomes on pace for a sixty four hundred yard passing season so divine when you've been a when you cue up the tape now on the Kansas City chiefs and on this young phenom quarterback in particular. What do you see and what do you think you know a guy who can make every single throw all over the field and you know he makes a lot of unorthodox passes. He's you know good in the pocket but he's a good scrambling quarterback as well so you know. He seems like a very complete quarterback. Now presents a lot of challenges for us. Isn't it amazing when you watch him. Throw how many times he seems to throw either off balance or maybe almost like falling backward or something like that and then you look and forty five yards down the field. The ball just drops right in the basket yeah. I think it's a huge testament to you know his arm strength I I don't. I don't think it really matters one foot. Two foot notes that I don't think it really matters. He can throw that thing so that that presents a huge challenge for us. We're going to have to try to put as much pressure on them as we can and and you know on the back end cover well and make it Orange Doron. I want to talk a little bit about you personally here and what's interesting to me when you look at your bio you go to USC and you get drafted by the giants and then when you become become a free agent you go to the Lions last year and I'm curious. What made your decision to go to the lions versus either anywhere else or staying in New York you know when when I hit three agency you know I was really open to whatever I wanted an opportunity you just to stay in New York but you know there is a lot of changes going on there and and you know we couldn't come to an agreement there so I wanted to find a good fit for me on on the football field that I felt like I was going to be able to take my career to the next level and and I think you know here in Detroit. That's what they offer me. I feel like I made the right decision and you know it's been great so far but you know now now. We're really trying to build something this year and and take take team to the next level. Haven't you been focused more on rushing the passer in Detroit than you were in New York. Yeah I didn't you know in New York. It was sparingly you know I was we ran more of a truce cruise for three in New York and I was you know the Sam linebacker that came on and off the field and and they started to realize I have pass rush ability so they would put me in in the Games and in third down down situations but you know we had to really good eggs rushers and Olivier Vernon and and Jason Pierre Paul so I kind of missed it that what moves moved around a lot but you know coming here they've carved out more of a role for me rushing the passer and giving me more of those opportunities and you know. I've done my best to take advantage that I've got to ask you about your first game of the year this year you guys go to Arizona crazy crazy game. It ends up being a twenty seven twenty seven tie that for you guys because you blew a big lead must have felt a little bit like a loss but in that game game one of the guys who's probably over the next few years going to be the hardest guy sack in the NFL cuyler Murray. You sacked him three times times. Now you gotTa tell me how in the world did that happen and what was rushing him like you know he went to a lot of challenges. You know similar as Patrick Patrick Mahomes does he's very versatile fast can move in and out of the pocket but you know I trusted the game plan that we have played you know a hundred miles an hour and and and you know the guys in the vacuum recovery and and you know we had a good rush plan. We're putting them in positions where he was running and I was just able to get the guy on the grounds. What did that feel like knowing. The kind of player was and not only how fast he is but how quick he is you. You know it was great. you know especially. I'm I was born and raised in Phoenix Arizona so you know I had about twenty family and friends there and and and things like that so it was cool to be able to be home and play well but I was disappointed in how that game indeed you know I feel like we should definitely be three no right now and you know that that should make hungry..

"So if you feel he's the wrong guy get rid of him. I know this. I know more about Joe Douglas just having people in Philly that work for. For him, really, like them. And obviously anyone you read or hear talk about speaks. Very highly Joe Douglas, whoever Houston ends of hired whether it's Nicosia area of Belgium, let's interview him or whoever the timing for these individuals. Like if you hire a brand new coach you can see the impact immediately. Right. You hire Andy Reid in Kansas City, first year plan, you hire Sean McVay first-year, plas. You hire Doug Peterson a couple years later, suitable, I guess. Coach's pretty median Jim Harbaugh shows up, boom and up. See championship Bruce Aaron shows up Amazon a boom they start winning with the general manager. It takes time usually and that's if you get hired in January will both these guys there, three times in the NFL to add your team free agency the draft and like the waiver wire slash trades kind of season. Well freight Aziz over the draft is over. So now the only time to really add your team now is in training camp. You could probably make trade the wire cuts at the end of training camp. That's kind of it, you know, you might be able to do something in season, with, like a street free agent. But again, I'm we're talking if the drafted free agency is probably fifty percent of it, and then the guy's already on your roster. Another probably forty five percent like the, the additional like five percent, maybe the practice squad guys, but they're usually already on your own team. So I think the high. For like Joe Douglas. Joe Douglas here to save the day. What can show Douglas do they already had the draft. They already signed on bell..

"Well, I'll tell you what else no one talks about him. John, I'm going to guess you don't know this James, you might do people listening know that one of the great Phillies hitters of all time died going over. Niagara falls. Ed, Dalla Hinchey really who was memorable. Well, not memorable because you have to remember, who was notable for his performance in the later, part of the eighteen hundreds and in the early part of the nineteen hundreds died going over Niagara. For how I, I think he may have even hit four hundred season. I think he did. And he died going over Niagara Falls, so make it that way. Well, I let's say at eight eight eight seven to nine ninety four ninety four I get a lot to reactive from over the weekend. And, you know, one of the pieces of news that came out and certainly was a bummer when we saw was that Joe Douglas? Is leaving the eagles if not unexpected going to the jets and my first thought was bomber my second thought was all right. Well, you, you know, you move on you bring the right person in to replace him. And my third thought was Richie is gonna freak out because John Ritchie was probably more in love with Joe Douglas than just about anybody in the two and a half years we've been doing this show, Ritchie, your reaction, and I'm sure it's full of angst. With Joe dog was no longer part of the birds. This is this is crushing. This is this is something that is being, you know, sort of glossed over, as, if it were inevitable that Douglas would leave, I thought I thought for a while there, that we had a chance to keep it, you know, because the jets were trying to low ball and then they eventually doubled their initial offer. He's getting paid so, well, I'm happy for Joe Douglas. He has done so much for us as vans. I mean Joe Douglas knows football. He's. That guy hopefully in that collaborative effort, that he put together with Howie and everyone else how he has gleaned some of that knowledge but Joe Douglas was the guy who had been there in the trenches and done that Joe Douglas was the guy who had worked, his way up through the ranks to get to that GM level decision making. Eye for talent, and I for scheme fit and understanding of intangibles. You know what are we looking for, in a football player, if he's going to be a Philadelphia, eagle, people, people tend to forget, when he came here when Joe Douglas arrived, he said, we are going to bring in a different type of player to be very clear about that. You know, he talked about toughness he talked about guys who love this game guys who want to sacrifice guys who are good teammates, those intangibles do matter and Joe Douglas, because he had been out there himself, you know, in the trenches. He's an offensive lineman at university of Richmond. He just got it. And by around the league he's widely respected, because he started as a scout, you know, worked his way up through. Through the ranks eventually, you know, studied with study under Ozzie, Newsome, Baltimore worked, his way up through the ranks to becoming the Chicago Bears director of college scouting right Burr year, before he got here and he just he did it the right way. And every step of the way he was. Just bleeding character and bleeding understanding of the sport. And he garnered a lot of respect around this league. And now he's where he belongs. He's in GM spot. I just wish we could have figured out a way to rearrange some of these titles here and give him the money he needed. What is going to happen? Now is critical. It's crucial for the next your jeez, ever for the Philadelphia Eagles, because we don't have that been there done that football guy from the trenches any longer, and how Andrew berry the replacement they had planned for this. They brought in Andrew berry from the Cleveland Browns will see how he takes over this mantle how he and how we sort of try to seamlessly cover up this flaw in the construction of our organization right now. Tell you this eight hundred seventy. Hundred ninety four bash say, here's the thing. I knew John, I knew you would be look if you notice what I said, I said, bomber I didn't say disaster, I didn't say massive cause for concern. I said, it's a bummer like to me, the Douglas thing and I listen, I want to be really clear. I appreciate obviously the role he played. He helped, you know, there's nothing you can make the case might be nothing more important than football than the construction of a roster. I mean, how they're schemed op and how their coach and how they're motivated that stuff all matters, but Rosser construction. I mean, you got to have the worst that you've got gotta have the talent obviously job Douglas was part of, but only only a part of bringing that Super Bowl team together. I mean, the reality is that I, I would argue was probably a little bit overrated by John and probably by some people that would call in from time to time because if you really look at his drafts since he came to heels now, let's remember Carson and that draft in the two thousand sixteen draft that was prior to Joe Douglas being hired. Joe Douglas was hired after that draft. He was hired. I believe it was in may of twenty sixteen may or June was may two thousand sixteen. I mean if you really look at his drafts, they're not do not that great like I knew John would come in fired up. Joe Douglas, I gotta blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah. And I appreciate the tough guy thing. And I appreciate the fact that he wanted a different kind of player. But I mean, John, what players did he get in the draft that really really, really away? I mean really who are they? You don't love Derek point. I like Barnett more than you this. Right. Loved their part, but. The twenty seventeen draft is somewhat Sidney Jones is an unknown commodity in my book, and what we're hearing is he is developing. I loved Sidney Jones at Washington, I thought I wanted to guy who could play for us right away. But I was easily pacified after that pick because I thought he was going to be amazed. It hasn't worked with fair. Douglas has turned out to be a lot better than anyone could have expected MAC Hollinshead. He stayed healthy. Mac Collins as a rookie was looking like he was going to be a major contributor on this offense. And then he was hurt the Donell pump. None none, a MAC. Daddy, MAC, homes will be a major contributor on special teams and a very Martin receiver. Yeah. Well, that's not a major contributor has not been good. Nate. Gary they love he starting for us right now. It's because they don't prioritize linebacker. Okay. Yeah. He's he's technically our third linebacker right now. I don't like. Jay Walker Jay hell right now. In these camps. He's our third linebacker. Because I understand that trying to make a point here. You say I don't like him as linebacker. I think he's more of a safety your day like him a lot. What about what about Dallas? Got her man. Dallas, got it the fact that we traded back to with the Baltimore Ravens, which a trade that never would have happened had he not had the relationship that he had no that big cut come on trades work. I don't know that for a fact, I'm assuming his relationship is, is good enough with a lot of these teams. And especially with the Baltimore Ravens because you spent so much time there that was ozzy's last draft. It was a like a tour of whatever the word is. I'm looking for or sort of force coup d'etat that, that pick itself for us to go back and still get the guy that we wanted it forty nine overall Dallas got who's going to be a major study in this league is pretty amazing. Vantera matic's. Don't, don't tell me of Ontario is an impressive. That's the best picky about to see Josh sweat, like the fact that we don't have faith or I don't have faith in these defense events is because they have faith in Josh sweat, and I haven't seen them. But, but so far unimpressive, right. Fair. Well known as her so no. But when he played we haven't seen I think it's impressive that they have enough faith in him to do what they've done. Defense. Let me let me just say that somebody says, no, let me say I don't think as a player I thought every year these rookies they come in. If one hits it's a miracle what he has found over the last two drafts are a ton of rookies who've come in, and played and contributed, which is unheard of around the NFL, look at the number of guys that he's drafted who have played on Sundays for the eagles started. John. You want to count. Yeah. Derrick Barnett is one. That's one Sydney Jones's to result dog races. Johnston start. Yeah he did. Nate, Gary is four cine. Joe start. Guys got hurt. Yes, he started two games, and then four oh come on. Got Goddard is five well. Zakar. It's. Maddux's six and then they don't forget Jordan mile at one starter. They've had Derek. Burnett is better. No. That's not. That's totally inaccurate you John. You're counting the fact that I guess two games for sending Jones or something. Yes. Other guys got hurt yet. That's ridiculous. Let me just say this eight eight six nine ninety four ninety four. My thing is this. There's a lot of reasons why the eagles won sear ball. And there's a lot of reasons why last year they contended again and got pretty far in the playoffs. Obviously the second round of the playoffs, and obviously deepen that game and came close to getting back to the NFC championship game. And I'm not saying Joe Douglas isn't one of them. Not saying that what I'm telling you is, I think he's a lot less of a reason that people like John, some other people think I'm not a dolphin the guy. I appreciate his presence again. When I saw the news this weekend, I was bummed. But at the same time guys let's keep it in perspective here. He's not the reason why they won the Super Bowl. I mean Carson Wentz Brandon Graham before Joe Douglas Malcolm Jenkins before Joe Douglas lane. Johnson. And Jason Peters. Jason Kelsey the offense align before Joe Douglas Doug Peterson being hired before. Joe Douglas Howie Roseman being the guy before. Joe douglas. I mean, you would think this guy walks on water, the way people react again, I want to be clear. I'm not gonna dog on him but I didn't hear John for two and a half years. Talk about Joe lizard dogging on no, no. You're overrating him. John, you're overrating the. And then how on earth, the effect becomes say that the guy who is in charge of determining whether the guy who's built our draft boards, the guy who's in charge of determining whether players scraping rafts, really know. They weren't don't you think that's that's to be determined Joe, but they don't look like great. I understand there's more dated. It'll come this year next year. But to this point, then, okay? Great drafts look. Eight eight eight seven to nine ninety four.

"Your director pro scouting by all accounts done a pretty good job recently to the raiders. So you're losing some front office talent. It's not just Douglas. It's kinda it could be a couple of guys. I just think that's not the most ideal thing. It's not like you're gonna see some huge impact in that regard this year. But something demo line. It's just like a priority. I think deals like have to get some more bodies into the front office in kinda riphil these holes that are being created here. Yeah. Before we talk about the exodus, which penalize you about next. What was your reaction Ben to the Joe Douglas deal? Was there any surprises there for you at all or any specific takeaways that might not be obvious? I this story about the jets and them being different on Douglas with money than being the debris, J, Mike them getting him to say. Yes like that. Like they just basically kept on up off until the African refuse firstly big ups on Joe Douglas get in the bag. Joe Doug's get on line again. Thanks for failing health. What is your ball plays on eighteen season? Very glad. Douglas again. His really excited for him to come back in twenty twenty one after the jets inevitably full yet again because Adam gates their head coach Belichick omega. You can't young man like way to do it. But it's all true. I mean yeah, like if you if you really need to empty the Bank to convince the guy who has been waiting for general manager spot for years to come be your general manager now either says, number one your roster and coaching staff lows number two your owner blows or three both do end like when you look at the jets like that might be the situation where nobody really likes the, the owner should bear. Obviously, there's concerns in terms of working with Adam gates in so I don't I'm very I would love to hear white for Douglas was it just a matter of getting, what you're worth, like I end, listen like when you're a general manager, you know, your head coach your bad head coach get fired. You can go get yourself a head coaching gig in another three years. You know what I mean? You can find your way back into something Kevin Clark and Robert Mays. We're talking about on the ringer NFL show, your general manager and you blow it you gotta. Spend a long time as a senior personnel executive bop-in from place to place or you can really get a second shot. But, you know, I'm not surprised it took a lot to get Douglas given the current state of the jets roster. We obviously know about the money. I wonder if like there was a discussion about, like listen, how many years of leeway do I get in terms like this is a multi year process? And that's when it's gonna take because you hate to see Doug was go just an awful spot with bad ownership, bad coaching, and just get burned, even if he does a decent job when eventually they clean house, and then they, he's not able to secure a job again. So I it's very fascinating how much effort the jets had to put it to go. Get kinda what that means to the state of the jets franchise and for Douglas really picking his spine terms of where am I gonna take this risk and end make the jump to be one of the thirty two. It'd be an gentlemen, gentleman. United expanding on why Douglas may have been so hesitant. I think that's a great point in. I wanna follow up on that. So why was he hasn't take the job to begin with put simply this is a risk for him? And I'll quote from Dan happened here, friend of the show, he's going to be on the radio later on. This week, former NFL scout with the eagles in jets now, director of the scouting academy. He says in his two thousand nineteen.

"So like that's S L egg Kate Ben how're you doing brother Navin? You get this is one of the last five sl record center Chicago resign about me moving before the show. But it's exciting stuff in south now I'm excited because the eagles have a franchise quarterback through four and that's still good news. Full five days later now we're going to touch on Carson Wentz, probably at the end of the show here. But look this is why were. I hear it has been an arduous saga to get us to this point finally here. Joe Douglas the eagles vice president of player personnel is taking the general manager job with the New York Jets and not without some convincing needed. Apparently, Adam Schefter had this to say the night of the hiring, quote jets, just would not take no as an answer from Joe Douglas. He tried to turn them down each time. He did. They came back at him harder and harder jet simply were not going to be denied in their efforts to Landy. Former eagles vice president of player personnel, unquote. It's a six year deal for Douglas who gets full roster control. That means he is in charge of the draft free agency all the other acquisitions, he'll be working with head coach Adam gays trying to build a winner there in New York, and before we talk about who else might be working with him there in terms of those who may follow him Bill. There's been no really surprises from this this, this is something that had been talked about for a while, and NFL circles. And in the media, I do find it interesting that it took such a big push from New York. Get it done. It also happened shortly after Brian gain got fired after only seventeen months as the Houston Texans, general manager, try and tell me that wasn't in part because of them being jumped by the eagles for Andre Dillard liar. But bill. Gee, what was your reaction to Joe? Douglas finally, moving onto the New York Jets in. We know that Joe Douglas the Texans wanted to interview him back in two thousand seventeen and heels blocked that clear still in the playoffs at the time. So I'm sure that didn't help our didn't hurt them. Delicious motivations there all the sudden, maybe, you know, the jets are trying to go after Joe Douglas, and there's no other GM Dobbs opened in the Texans entered the fray. And they're like, okay. No, we really need to get this done, but also, we're gonna lose them. And that's such a silly thing to write like to, to quibble over, like money for GM like you can pay like there's no cap space on office, guys, you can pay them as much money as you want to the bargaining over. That seems kind of silly to me. NFL teams are really struggling in these streets. Biaggi. Yeah. Especially like, you know, the jets. A major media market team. You know, you have to fill out for them, so they, they got through Douglas. It's expected. I think it's not great. You know, for the eagles to be losing him in the sense that they've done. Well, when the has been here, and you've had stability and biolo- counts. We know that Joe Douglas is a guy who at the very least, you know, you can question it. It's hard to parse exactly Ryan's roster which decisions were his in what he deserves credit for what he doesn't deserve credit for. But what we do know is that he was a guy who didn't cause trouble. And that's you know, there's value in that in front office, because you have guys in dysfunctional front offices and empower plays in power struggles and everything. So we know that Jodi, this wasn't one of those guys in he did seemingly have a good working relationship with Halle resident, so there is value in that and to lose that hurts. I also think that they could potentially be losing some other guys that Douglas brought from Baltimore to Philly now could be going to essentially to the jets so you lose some more of those front office members in the already lost, Wayne Joseph..
Joe Douglas, Mike Mckenna And Vice President discussed on Tony Paige Show
"Little over three weeks after firing Mike McKenna and the jets had themselves a new general manager and turn eagles vice president of player personnel. But, but doesn't that at least end to your mind going into this who, who is backing up Joe, Douglas them like who's the next guy is going to be from the outside. Andrew barrier. That makes sense. So if you can convince him to stay instead of Joe Douglas at two great guy could have there. It's easier to find another. Joe Douglas than it. Yes. That is trying to say, let's put it this exact put it this way summed that up. Would you take Joe Douglas and Phil savage, which is the rumor that is going to happen with the jets. Yes. Where would you take Howie Roseman, and I? In becomes a lot more like. Very appealing. I love as great on the radio. I don't know if I wanted to come back and be gentlemen team. We helped Howie Roseman, no big deal. He's really been the general manager of the Browns and that was like some like and he's been out of the league for so long like I don't know like I'm not all on this, and Dana, Jeremiah, and all I think they're great analysts like this thing is to go, take analysts and bring them into front. Thank you. I'm saying that is not the that, look, I think in some cases at work in some won't. But I don't think I don't think just because they do make that you should be like, all right. Well, let's these guys to let's go do that. Now, I think it's a it's a closer to bait, then James making it out to be so that way, I side with John slightly, but there's so much more that goes into being GM than just being good. How the day-to-day basis, the fact he has experienced doing that. He's done it for so long. Like he is like I said, I think he's the best general manager in football. So it's hard to especially SuperBowl winning one like turning new leaf.

"His own coach bring his own guy in, if Adam gazes is successful will then Joe Douglas is still the man who put the team together that had success or whatever whatever happens over the next couple of years or so. So I do think it's interesting Beal g that it hasn't happened yet it's been a few days now, and we're still talking about it. If the jets wanted Joe Douglas to be their general manager. Why hasn't it happened? I know it's been a few days, but usually when you make a move like this, the corresponding move happens kind of quickly at this point in the offseason, the whole idea the thinking behind the jets making this move now because it makes it makes no sense for the jets to fire their GM when they did Eljay, otherwise after the draft when all of these decisions have been made in free agency when when all of these big decisions for two thousand nineteen have already been decided. Now you fire your general manager to me, the only way this makes sense if they were waiting for something else to happen. There are waiting for Joe Douglas to become available after the draft. And, and then they decide to make the move if that's not the case. I don't understand what the deal is behind the timing here. So that's why I'm thinking the fact that they haven't named him GM that he hasn't been hired yet is starting to make me feel like it's not going to happen so things and what you said, I think, first of all some of the hesitancy that should come from Joe Douglas's side, is that I feel like more. So with executives and gentlemen, injures like you kinda can't screw up your opportunity. Once you get one. It's not like a head coach as much where you can get a head coaching job yon then does work out. Okay. Now you're an offense coordinator, and maybe do. Well there and get another head coaching job down the line. You know, we, we see retread head coaches in totally at least more often than we do, like a retread. GM had him gazed her. So I feel you know, Joe Douglas messes this up like this could be his one chance. So I think he has to kind of be careful. I don't think he can just jump at any job that opens up which explains why you've been waiting so long. Maybe he sees this as the right opportunity, you know, movies, really big on Sam darnold, but maybe he's alternately skeptical of the front office structure, and what went on there? I feel like there's some kind of interesting thought about why the timing of why they fired their GM when they did it doesn't make like no sense. In the fact that usually scouting in, in front office moves are made at this time of year, typically after the draft. I mean now a couple of weeks after the draft, so I get a little bit later, but still like that's when these kind of front office moves are typically made as opposed to you know how we see black Monday in the NFL right after the season. That's when I think people usually expect front office changes to happen. Then that's just not as realistic because at that point. Usually in this isn't always the case in some teams are willing to make the swap but a number of teams are already like so in too far in ready to their evaluation for the off-season that they feel like it's kind of dumb the pull the rug at that point in January, because it's only two months to free agency until me like four months to the NFL draft. So I think that's part of why I think the Douglas thing specifically if he's their guy, you know, if if that's the jets guy will like they know they can't get him at a certain point earlier in the off-season, potentially cause eagles could block it if it's not a job that has final say, so they debts kinda be waiting anyway..
NFL Network's Daniel Jeremiah reportedly under serious consideration for Jets front-office job
"Just months after NFL network draft analyst, Mike Mayock took the raiders GM job his replacement Daniel Jeremiah is under serious consideration for a prominent front office position with the New York Jets per sources NFL network draft analyst job has become breeding ground for front office jobs. That's me is no brainer. My guy DJ he eats tape. He eats tape. He absolutely lives for it. He loves it. He knows it. You'll never find a better guy. Schefter also points out that Jeremiah's friends with Philadelphia's VP player personnel. Joe Douglas who may have a role there in New York.

"Nine nine hundred ninety four heavy dose of, said failed and the four string quarterback Joe Callahan who looks short John short. Like I mean is short honestly if there's. One thing more than anything else I noticed in the first hour so here observing camp is that that guy is small, is physically, of stature that is called short from an NFL quarterback standpoint so well hopefully Carson Nick poignant the other three quarterbacks that we're looking. At our six five and. Above like, very big human being He's. More of a tiny normal sized guy, normal size let's, get to also interesting a couple of days ago and again we'll hear from how he actually we'll. Hear from Doug Peterson today the press. Conference is going to be after practice wraps up so we're in the eleven thirty eleven forty range and we'll bring. You, the press conference at. Dog it'll be first. Time speaking publicly since putting pen. To paper with the extension which Jonah was it was interesting, to note I I don't think it was, lost on many certainly not me and I don't think he, was well. So let's team president extension Joe how we Roseman executive vice president of football operations basically a title above general. Manager extension head coach Super Bowl winning head coach all of these guys are Super Bowl winners head coach Doug Peterson extension and. Who, was, not extended, interesting, component, to the makeup of the eagles franchise president and then, you wonder where it's going Joe Douglas not Extended now. Look obviously from my vantage point I'd love to see Joe Douglas John here for, a long long time and I think. A lot of us would be given, the two years, he's been here the roster makeup, of this team, not just. The Carson Wentz thing which was certainly driven in large. Part by, you know the the very bold move by Howie Roseman a leapfrog. Up in the draft to eight and two and and get. His man but the roster construction and I'm talking about the Cory Clements I'm talking about the Jalen. Mills late in the draft I'm talking about you know Derek Barnett who was, an outstanding first. Round pick in kind of. A criticized I pick actually the roster construction has, been magnificent and so you know one of the things. I wonder about is and. And, Joe Douglas getting a lot of Paul that he's. Going to be probably with someone, else in six, or seven months when the. Season ends it's probably inevitable I'd like, to see the, eagles try to retain the guy's much possible and pain whatever the hell you gotta pay him but. If he wants to be final say, somewhere else, then He's going to leave he probably will and you wonder what is this organization look like on the inevitable other side. Of Joe Douglas being the number two eagles essentially can Howie. Roseman be as effective and can the Philadelphia Eagles be. As great without, either leave, the greatness John Douglas no there is no proof that how he can do. This without Joe Douglas how we made the Carson. Wentz amazing move up, to go get our franchise guy that's independent of Joe Douglas everything else the types of players that we see on this field the winners that just did exactly that for us our Joe Douglas, fingerprints all over. All over Derek Barnett criticized by me when he was taken two years ago in, Joe Douglas's first draft is exactly the. Kind of guy Joe Douglas told us, he was gonna, bring In here guys, with a different mindset a different toughness a different, drive desire there's so much to those intangibles that Joe Douglas identifies and has built a team of those players Derek Barnett MAC. Holland's who we just spoke to we came. Away from that interview saying man that, guy Is tough minded man that guy is exactly, what you'd, look for in a young leader young a guy who, loves getting out there and. Competing Sidney Jones just wait till you see what he does Joe Douglas, Douglas who did, it himself quite, well. Together sure Corey Clement yeah totally Dallas Goddard already showing what he can do Josh sweat wait until, you see, this quarterback, Matt prior offensive lineman who's. Having an incredible camp all these guys, have, that mentality Joe Douglas, said where I've been we looked for a certain type. Of person that's, something I believe how he was. Missing, and I don't I sure as heck hope Joe Douglas sticks around but he. Probably won't John thanks gone the writing on the wall, is geez, they just re upped everybody what about. Joe and here's the thing if I had asked fathers John I want Joe Douglas here. But can you fault, him for wanting to be a GM so no I do not gonna let him have that title here now, they. Won't which I think is a mistake well we have there is. No, proof that how he Roseman can work the magic he has. Worked with this team without Joe Doug eight. Eight eight seven, to nine ninety four ninety four the. Concern. Of the. Other, side of eagles organization after Joe Douglas what it, looks like, eight hundred seventy nine nine hundred ninety four and if, you believe how we can. Do it and be as great Without Douglas here here's. The, way I look at it John it is first off I think it's inevitable. So if Joe Douglas wanted to be a highly paid number two guy in an organization and by the way could have you know big been given assumed the title of general manager much like. Again tragically Tom Hecker passing away yesterday like Heckert was the general manager eagles but without final say under Andy Reid That, could have happened it's notable that it did not happen. Couple of days ago. When those announcements came out so what I. Take from that, might take away from that is. That as long as eagles have another, good year which I think they're poised to. Do Joe Dell is. Going to be gone. Because thirty one other teams in whatever seven or eight are gonna be looking for general manager someone's gonna want them someone, should want, them and someone's going to get him I think it is I, don't, wanna say one hundred percent, guaranteed obviously it's not but I think. It's largely inevitable, so the question is You know how, we Roseman on the other side of that look? He's, always gotta. Keep turning it out, I mean how he's got to. Be thinking right now that who. Am I replacing Joe Douglas with that's part of the preparation process you gotta have a guy? Either? Internally externally you gotta you gotta have that ready to go how he's gotta learn from the the traits. Joe Douglas brought to. This organization try to replicate it, without Joe Douglas but I'll tell you it is. It is going to. Be a challenge because I believe in that guy John you and I right from the. Beginning did believe in Joe Douglas now do I think we can do it without him yes I do but to, your point he's never proven that he can he's never proven that he has he's never how he has not had the success without Joe Douglas organization did he's had what. Joe I thing Joe, Douglas for the biggest issue that a lot of us. Had with how he. Was that he didn't play football you know. That he loved, football but he hadn't been out. There and done that So did he know everything it took the nuance Characteristics that, you need to find a winner. In this game Joe Douglas was an, offensive lineman. Joe Douglas has been in the. Trenches Joe Douglas he has that, tough mindset himself you know that love the game get out there and lay laying on the. Line mindset. That he can find. In other players I don't. I don't know why how we would have. That he. Certainly doesn't have it from experience better have it he's better have have somehow. Learned is in six or seven months, show dogs it's probably. Gone eight. Eight seventy nine nine hundred, ninety four I it it's heartbreaking if this happened I think. How we can be as effective without Joe Douglas it's probably inevitable that we're going to find out what are your thoughts on the eagles where they go without Douglas ultimately likely at the end of the season.
