"I'm Joshua Johnson. We are discussing South Africa, and where it stands now after its latest national election with columnists Justice, Malala, NPR's, Quist arcton, and Ron Nixon VIP Joel emailed. I lived in Joe Burg Johannesburg between two thousand one and two thousand nine and still have many great friends there. I love the country, and my wife, and I have often thought about moving there with our children. But each time I visit reality sinks in it is impossible to have such drastically high unemployment for such a long time and not have real anger the gap between rich and poor is immense. Yes. Corruption foreshadows everything. But it is the average South African who is hurting Justice. I had to cut you off. Pause. Let me let you finish your thought. And then we'll keep going. The contribution to just slide out. And I think one of the key things from the agency of nineteen ninety four Nelson Mandela to to compared to to today. It's that if you look at unemployment we we've with absolutely failed to create jobs unemployment is at twenty seven percent. It's exactly where into us in nineteen ninety four. Now that many many issues we can say have been a an impediment to to improving the situation, but on the indices unemployment poverty levels inequality. We pitchy much stock. And I think the problem is that way had vision way had had implementation in ninety nine thousand four and in them big administration of ninety nine to two thousand eight our that was wiped out from two thousand nine when Jacob Zuma. Became president. So so I my views that the end of nineteen hundred four hundred twenty nine twenty nineteen of vastly different. And I do want to want to come to you just one second, but Ron Nixon. I should I should've asked you earlier. We should clarify the time line of presidents that that Brule under the ANSI. We had no cement we've mentioned a couple of names. We've had Nelson Mandela after Nelson Mandela there was in Becky Becky, and then after Todd Becky Zuma Jacob Zuma who is the most previous president before the current Cyril Ramaphosa. Okay. So those are the four that were referring to under this time serum opposes the president. Now under the election that just place feB Quist arcton, you talk to voters in South Africa in terms of what they were expecting from this election. I'd love to get your thoughts on that. But first, let's hear some of what they told you feB stops him from NPR, and I'm talking to people about voting. Yeah. Your name. The funny part is I'm standing there and thinking does anyone get emotional about it anymore because it's still has a feeling when you get it in. Thinking the privilege that it is to be able to vote because so many young people. They won't be voting. So tell me about the emotion of ting. Well, we all know the history behind it. But I think. This set nece that young people don't seem to understand what it took to. Afford this privilege this right? You know what I mean? And you look Dan evens going. No, I'm voting I'm not saying corruption, and it's like you seriously trying to compare corruption to partake feB you mentioned earlier that not a lot of young people turned out to vote. I understand the disenchantment with the ANC. What about some of the opposition parties? Anybody else capturing the attention of young South Africans at all. Or are. They just kind of this floating voting block without a party. Oh, yes. I would say the economic freedom fighters Judas Malemba who was kicked out of the ANC about five years ago and setup this left leaning party that was the vein of the life of disgraced President Jacob Zuma has the attention of young and many others. It got almost double the vizier have almost double the votes they did five years ago and in all about just onto eleven percent. Okay. Compared with the NC's fifty something. And even the main opposition Democratic Alliance is twenty something that's not huge. But. Judas? My name is seen as something of a maverick. But he's somebody who Tokes true we say in west Africa. You know, he talks about the issues that. Tricky like land distribution and land reform that many South Africans are thinking about because of course, the minority white community still owns most of the land in South Africa, which took him for twenty five years down the line. So the EFF which in parliament has been quite a dramatic party. I mean, it it has disrupted interrupted and really taken on everybody, especially former president Zuma and even the new president symbol sitter ram oppose. If they feel that he's going down the wrong track. And there were forty eight parties taking place in these. Parliamentary elections because it's it is parliamentary and also provincial elections. You don't choose the president the party that has misfits then puts its candidate Fullwood and. You know, many people are saying we should have given more of a chance to other parties to have a say in the future of South Africa. But that hasn't happened the NC now controls eight of the nine provinces it again lost the western Kate. Wet Capetown is to the of Democratic Alliance the official opposition. But otherwise it still holds the reins Lovie it with a diminished majority run Nixon, the EFF is such a fascinating story to me because they're there. I guess from our perspective, we might consider them a far left party. But some of the things are advocating or have advocated speak directly to the things that are feB mentioned, especially land ownership in land rights. Yes. Fania mention this party. It's relatively new did not exist. I mean, Julius limit was they have the ANC youth division and started his party after he got kicked out, and it does speak to the issues that the majority of black South Africans are experiencing everything from the the service protests and not being able to get water and sewer and housing and the economics and the disenfranchised of the youth, and particularly as you mentioned the issue of land distribution because the majority of land is still in the hands of white South Africans, and and that is creates this this reinforces the inequities that exist in the country, which is one of the highest if not the highest in the world, I think the the the just South Africa or ten times the wealth as as as pours out afric-. So the F F speaks to that. And the issue. The fact is is Fabienne mentioned that they have been disruptive and things and the parliament. But now in three of the nine provinces they are the official opposition party now. So how do you then translate that into governates from just being opposition and being disruptive to now particularly governing, but they held the key here. Because of you know, they have the issue mentioned about eleven percent of the vote. They've picked up more members and parliament say they hold the key to the ANC actually governing around that seems to be kind of a key to the story of democratic South Africa throughout I mean, when the ANC took power from the national party under FW declerk, they they really try to do the big thing. And welcome everyone in Mandela mentions. FW declerk with some gratitude in his first inaugural address Kikinda acknowledges him and thanks him for I support. But if you're the party of liberation, and then you become the governing party, the previous ruling party one plane ball with you in ninety three. So now that you've won in ninety four you have to figure out how to make them work with you and ninety five and that's not easy to do. It's not easy to do. Because again, these very people that are on the other side that you were fighting against one year. And then the next year all of a sudden, you're trying to get them to work with you and to their credit. Some people did some some people actually did come to work with the game. See, but a lot of them didn't. And you see some of those remnants are in the Democratic Alliance. The opposition party at one about twenty percent actually down from what they had in the last election. But view, the AMC you they did try to get those people to to work with them. Try to create this big tent that you've mentioned before. But again, there was tremendous opposition and one of the other parties that actually gained was this small African let party that did gain some additional votes teat. We're speaking to Ron Nixon of the AP NPR's affiliate Quist, arcton and Justice Malala of the financial mail and the times of South Africa. Randy tweeted, I'm moved by the woman who still gets emotional when voting I'm a fifty four year old American and even though I've not had to personally fight for my right to vote. I get emotional. We had a listener call in here is what they left in our inbox. Hi, this is Claire from Louisville Kentucky. I wanted to share that. I was very fortunate to be in South Africa in nineteen ninety five on the one year anniversary of the first democratic elections after the end of partied. I was twelve years old, and I was living in Zimbabwe because my father was a teaching Fulbright at the university of Imbaba in. Harari and as a white middle class kid from southern Ohio. It was quite I opening not just to be in sub Saharan Africa, but to witness mass celebration mass demonstration on that anniversary clear. Thanks very much for sharing your story with us Justice Malala. Let's talk about this election little more. Give us a sense of the corruption issues that we saw either in this election or leading up to it. The Jacob Zuma story was the big highlight feB touched on that. But were there other issues with corruption that either drove people to or away from the polls? Corruption has become endemic in South Africa. Jacob Zuma is the person we speak about most Jacob Zuma, essentially as affiliate said, either the beginning Jacob Zuma. Ted out his presidency to one image that Gupta family. They knew when he was going to find out the finance minister, they could play the markets and make bets on its way back in within a year of him becoming twenty ten they went this was going to people and telling them, oh, get lady to become the minister of this all the minister of that. I'm sorry to interrupt you. But I I just want glaze over what you said in the way, it sounded like you said that he rented out the presidency too. He is in large part it did because he he gave the good tough power to go about treating people for his cabinet. Take for example, December twenty fifteen he wanted to fire the minister of finance the Gupta familiar went off item. ABC Jonah's who has the deputy minister that they told him in a meeting. This all come out in a commission of in crappy that if you accept the job of finance minister, but work with us that we will overtime pay you a violent of sixty million US dollars. They offered him it cash amount in them and the meeting that they in this idea have a plastic bag. We've got some cash for you he tended down. He's spoken about publicly. And this was just not one aspect of the Jacob Zuma administration. Does then tyrod ministration so that is option at the level of Jacob Zuma and the president's, but is a lot of corruption that has seeped the system whether it's municipal contacts. Whether it's cloven chattel contact where if you're in with the agency, and if you give some money to the party, or to lead us of the party than you get government work and so forth. And that's why big of the big conversation in South Africa at the moment was so in a few speaks about the young people who are not voting. You know, we talked about six million young people who didn't vote, but for me one of the scariest things when we took up. The pied of having voted ninety nine to four no Phoebe and other sweat at that time. That that ten outs for that vote was in the nineteen peasants today. You have ten out at low sixteen percent. It's it's actually out of the p twenty six million people. I just thought to vote. That's those are the people who look look when you talk about how many people voted, but ten million people hadn't even just that to vote. The get goes. So you have a you have a universal Feddie six million people ten million of those people from the get goes, I'm not going to even put my name down that up on the day. They they just don't just only twenty six million do and only seventeen million actually ten up on the day. So so these some of these Cup Shen that inequality, poverty, the scab that..

"And it's kind of neat. Okay. For anybody. Doesn't know Alex trebek's not long ago that he's battling pancreatic cancer. I just love the fact that he and the show are back in the spotlight like this because of what James also our student. You know, it's kind of it's kind of a neat thing. One more thing in the NBA. I don't know what to make of the Toronto Philadelphia series. I never know what to make of the seventy Sixers. Okay. I always think that that Embiid can show up play the way dig to or or have a stinker like Kyrie had last night. Bob. I know you like the raptors I know you think they're going to the NBA final. Do you have any kind of handle on this thing after the first two games? Well, because I was a skeptic about Phillies maturity factor number one. Still m-2 degree. And always wonder exactly the whole Simmons of thing the need to peculiar nature of his game. And an Hello Hoa's going to last Butler came up, you know, the Butler reminded everybody that you know, why he was so coveted. I'm still going to stick with Toronto. But you know, I'm just looking they got five points off the bench in game two fine. Oh, yeah. And that's that's a little frightening. Got five up the bench show. I that's going to continue like that. I don't know. But philly. Butler Butler was was a big the he was a man James is coach then we find out his birth certificate is Jimmy like Larry Larry, Larry Joe Burg. So Brett quite demand for main try to get you know, I know we've all made that mistake at times, we we he got shot down by Jimmy Butler, his own players know, it's Jimmy. It's always been Jimmy. But anyway, that was a hell of a game you played. But then again that was a hell of a game. We got out of Leonard. And I get thirty five more less than that game that I'm going to stick with Toronto. I still have more faith that they're going to do what they do better than Phillies, which is why or Embiid the best player in the gym. Oh, I say, quite okay. And sometimes pop you know, what? Sometimes that's what we can overanalyze sake. We come up with every stats Oprah, Gary Walter said, if you torture stats long enough, you can make say whatever you want them to. Okay, sometimes sports comes back to who has the best who has the best player and Ken that player impose his will on thing. Like this. More than anybody else in the gym and thing as you alluded to earlier that the there's a physical uncertainty about Embiid day today, and we don't know if he's ever going to be one hundred percent during the two thousand nineteen playoffs. I wouldn't think. So if he's battling the needed this degree. So that that that's a factor as let me all right? Let me ask you this. Because I think of the we're down to the quarterfinals in this thing. Okay. There's eight teams left. I feel like I have a pretty good handle on seven teams who are playing in this tournament. Bobby? I just don't know who the Sixers are accept a talented as they are. There's one word that keeps flashing across my brain. And that is soft this. I'm just going to go. I guess. It's easy out the same maturity thing and collective thing and Embi so motionlessly so interesting could be I just know that that's gonna play two five on paper as five guys could get you twenty you know, eyelash if Harris goes for twenty certainly JJ, and of course, had the and Simmons with his peculiar non non shooting game because still get twenty but they into Astaire, but I'm looking at this bench. And and a lot of guys in the in the basketball witness protection program on that bench. And how about you grab Greg Monroe played before different teams this year? Coming off the bench..

"There's no pressure no stress, but you feel good about the code lead you into winning the next tournament. That's right. It's momentum. I want to talk about some fun stuff. You were talking about stuff going wrong on the golf course. But now you can maybe look back and laugh at stuff. What is the biggest may laugh at stuff cone wrong? Now. What's so thin that having to you on the golf course that you can look back and laugh at now. Over the one thing you realize crazy takes. Yes. So on trying to pull up no here like I could go and give you some serious stories of things that happen. But probably the craziest thing that ever happened to me on the golf course. And the cameras were dayer, but I've never seen on TV. 'cause I are young European came across. I think it was my first a A teepee. teepee. Players championship. I hit it rice on eighteen. It's the one of the grass bunkers on the on the Friday. I think I need to make five to make the coast to cameras there. But I'm a nobody at that's to Toews suit. Hasn't two has an three. So I've got to play. This like splash heavy row fund really was heavy in deterrment Friday afternoon. So to second round in the tournament make the cut I get down to three to making. But it's left pin. Chip it into war so drama for me drama. Everything's three calls came out in the one show in the tournament. We three really to on the green in another. I hit two balls on the neat. My bowl and all tournament to two went on the grain include my ball and iota went to fourth. That's that's how deep the roof over three Gulf boats came out into tournament Friday afternoon, and it's never ever it with the camera. Was there obviously what we're going to camera and the producer? He had no idea. What happened when did you realize which ball was yours, and what was your? Three balls flew out. There's a serious panic. What went on what it feel like what that's the problem? You know, it's different. You think first of all you might think you hit a rocker roof? Right. Then you see to Gulf Coast go off the air. And then you look down at notable like a foot, and you then you start going, which is mine. I made contact assume I make contact with my own boat pretty decent because it did what was supposed to. But I've got to live on the green no penalty. I was gonna ask why I played my bowl. I didn't. That's amazing. And what did what it was the aftermath of after the round? They talked to you about it. No, nobody knew. You just find that? This is the problem with the problem of. But in the end today, the producer, even if they have the cameras there, which did and I could see was operating the producers only covering navy big names. May he doesn't eat. It wouldn't have known. What went on? Like, we have a situation in talking crazy Kingston engulf we've situation which we would love to see in South Africa. Gary Murphy Irish pros playing might being Joe Burg open. I think he's playing and he's walking. These walking up onto degree in. He's plane hopefully, not got the name wrong. But I think he's playing with Tich Moore said African player who's built like seriously so teaches I think a very average wage into degreen these walked these marches Foale picked it up on his trolling to his caddy who's forty yards away. So he's given underarm baseball tro. Right as good as any baseball. So you can imagine Gary Murphy is walked into hit him in the temple knocked them out. Knocked the grain have you ever heard that report? Come on hit. I'm told that out absolute. Strange things happen on the golf course. You guys never get to hear about it. Let's let's the. Yeah. You know, what probably ten years time. We'd probably have you know. The internet following there. Just have just white run, hammers everywhere. For every shot for every player for every hole at some point at some point..

Any reason why I personal brand boy, a product, the other two are operational capability. So again, I'm quite founded this one because you have to be a perations capable of delivering what is your selling providing? And, and if you're not you ally, the provides a product or, or you'll lose a customer really rapidly. So, so you have to as, as the IDC landscape, and as the market landscape has spread into, you know, social digital content. Always other things pops up, I have spread themselves to be out to answer everything. Yeah. And and, and there's sometimes operation capable. So that's why love special agencies because they said, we're appreciate what this, this is what we do. We focus on this brilliant at it, and I, I love. The bold enough to say, no, we don't do that, because, you know, this is what we do. But we realized that if you want this is what we do. So we built in house agency for brands. That's what we do. If a client wants, you know, a traditional approach them, we say, well, we don't we don't do it work, and we don't it would I see the, you know, on inquest into what to do. I wonder if we have a pitcher, a future where a brand highs different specialist agency for every single different specialism. Yeah. Good one agency influences won't Fe. But But if if was was my my place. place. Videos agencies. I think I think there's, there's no reason why it couldn't is broken up ready in in, you know online of flying above line below line production agencies. Go go back ten fifteen years, you probably wouldn't feel that you crave agency wouldn't production and will you media targets. But actually it has the, the decoupling of the creative idea of us is the media production started things happened, you special agencies, and then you digital did just ended up being such a massive word that needs to be broken up. And so people could understand digital was then it was content. What content now social, you know so, so I think he's going to continue to break down. Maybe not as far as disciplines, but as far as, you know, specialisms definitely touch on social Moore's in and say that, because, you know, we, we know the in our is the wrong way of doing something, and that would be for your agency to create a TV see, and then say right, we're going to break up into a million different pieces, and that's clear. Early Weber so wrong on ways. So the alternative way of thinking tonight, so, especially when we say, you know, that there is this destruction happening is one of the ways, it's happening, suppose that I think I think the TV sees all, you know, whether the, the my channel appetizing distribution, I think that I think content as to shopped it that and consumers pulling content rather than being pushed it now, you know, one knows that so I think that I think that more more brands are going to move towards agencies that, that can deliver contents. There's relevant to the audience has to be authentic is what I'm trying to say. So so TV. See is a great piece of brand work, but has anticipating what it might mean to, to us in the UK as authentic might be completely different. Entertainments Paolo, as thin tick, or team in South Africa, and Joe Burg as authentic, so so brands of hat to be able to, to, to break up, what they do and localize if you'll global brand it has to be to extend its reach..

"And it's like that's not right in it's wrong. But also for us as women it's even worse because they just feel like Malcolm said where the least protected so they can say whatever they want to say as an for me sometimes like Allah in log right back out. I'm like, you know, what? Nope. As things needs to do in my life, y'all not gonna bring me down your have your fun with it. And just go on about like, oh, I'll give you a clear example. I said that men are trashed is the longest running comedy bit on Twitter. Right, right. Because we've been saying that for years now, it's hilarious. Way we pointed out right, South Africa Twitter. Gosh, so mad at me. Because apparently, they created a hashtag men are trashed to kind of address them side femicide in South Africa, which is a huge issue. Right. And I've been like amplifying supportive of the work beings on there. But I wasn't talking about the minner trash has tax run about the concepts of men are trash, and I pointed out at said Yana getting mad right now. The only reason you have the phrase men are trash is because you got it from us. Yes. Let less real right, right? From years of us, saying men are trash in the you took it in turns it into the half track for your movement Rogers, great. But but you to sit here and say that I'm ridiculing that rhyme on like hit possibly know me to even say some shit. I was in Joe Burg like come on. Yeah. So for me, it's like one of those things I was like, you know, what mute this conversation in going out of business. It's not it's going to drag you down. That's the greatest. On Twitter that meet this conversation, whoever. I know we go in on Jack quite often. But whoever thought of that one that day out they left a hand up in the air to meeting like Steph curry shooting, the three that shit saved my life. I was like thanking definitely. And you know, trying to. I try not to be passive aggressive. But some people you have commute right but eight if up when you forget into Munis somebody like two years later now Romy, though, low key like all of us for for the most part on Twitter lot. We're creators we put out we put out into the world, right? And not everything has to be for everybody. And sometimes I'm gonna be getting on any nerves, and they're gonna get tired. And I'm okay with muted or whatever. Like, I'm fine with that stuff. I just like you said sometimes I checked listen on might oh shit. But but for the most part like I want people to just have peace like, I don't even if they don't follow me. I'm like, I'm never going around like upset with people or any of that stuff. Low key. You him blocking me, and I won't get mad at you. And I'm not saying this is a joke. Know eagle about me. Three you that months, please block me from your universe? People got mad at me because I have Wednesday. I had tweeted that I have over one hundred thousand people blacks, but that's because I run blockchain on people like to reading the sheets, followers like that. I'm like if you willingly follow in him. I want you talking right. Like those things accumulate, but because people are not aware of those things they're like, well, how do you have the time whatever album black a million people if I need to add to that? But, but I think I think if you know if you circle back to kind of like, I'm talking about in the book is dislike we have endured a lot as vocal, hyper visible, black women, particularly black feminists women all in the name of black liberation as a whole, and and I've always been like an abused. As example, before I believe that liberation work is like that of an orchestra you play the piano you play Qatar. You play the violin. I do drums whatever we all have something that we're really amazing at if we focus on that. We can come together make a beautiful sound, and is like I don't have to worry about all these other people's I'm saying this lane, and my lane right now is black women girls that is a main..

"I'm Vic Vaughn in the WGN newsroom. Ready to join the conversation live whenever a story changes on Chicago's very own seven twenty WGN. The coffee bean industry has supported families in the highlands of Ethiopia for generations. But the amount form is, hey, get for a kilogram of beans has fallen a third to just twenty nine cents or less than a sent a Cup as global coffee prices have slumped their lowest level in nearly thirteen years. Ethiopian farmers export most of their coffee in folk as green unrealistic beans. It's the processes that follow that at the greatest value and usually take place in the countries that consume the coffee, General Motors, steers, clear of the pileup of corporate profit warning. "Was it violent as you know? But since we're talking about this on my way back from so flu, Manila, Hong Kong, Hong Kong e throw just today's ago and from Hong Kong to throw viciously when you reach too high terrains of China this always shaky there's no way to avoid it. And they knew that in the captain came on the very beginning of the fights that we're gonna try to void it. But it might be some shakiness we see in it. I didn't do what you had done. So in actually screen shot, even the actor Dwyfor is awesome. But didn't go there didn't actually check. And I could see the moving map that were avoiding the terrain. We're on the Nord of Chen just below the Gobi desert Mongolia, if you actually going to map guys rights west of Beijing and Sony started to do exactly you mentioned all the at that point in the flight. Although it was a day flight all the windows were shades were closed because some people were. Sleeping and he started moving like insane for little just like three minutes. I said, okay. Whatever the crew hadn't been asked to seat at that point. And I remember I had asked like ten minutes before for coffee, and she comes to mean says, oh here, here's a coffee. She gives me the coffee in exact movement. She gives a coffee it starts again. Spilling the coffee everywhere. Obviously. It's okay. Just coffee, whatever it went. I cannot compare. I don't know if it was as violent pitied went for twenty minutes, super hard. Look the crew was asked to sit down for twenty twenty five minutes. It was moving and I was trying to drink the coffee to avoid because they know where to put it, right? I I don't know if actually is better. But I tend to what that got two things happen to hold the drink in my hand to compensate for the movement. Built in begin. But I I mean, I did my best. I the one time to take a sip, obviously, massive one and get some my face. I'm like my God. Anyway, no biggie. But and I could see the behavior mentioned not from a crew I could see many people opening the window shade taking a look outside which was bright and sunny, nothing, you know, because you cannot see it. We're not in a storm anything, and I could see the end of the twenty five minutes in the story short some passengers really shaken up like really like, and we had like steely, no probably nine hours to go. It's not it's not reassuring. If you're freaked out at that point. It's really not reassuring. It was my biggest strongest turbulence in five to six years. Yeah. It was really really really really big. I mean, I was like, you know, because I'm like you. I used not to be maybe as fearful flying as you. But these kind of things used to disturb me a lot when I was younger, and I would get like the what's going on what's going on. Now. I was like what the hell I'm gonna I'm gonna do. Right. So I was smiling and trying to watch my movie with shaking like my very quiet movie became became a documentary shaky camera. That region of China's always bad you've got a mountain. I can't wear. What are they called the mountain rolls or something that the air coming down off the mountains? I remember can't they pilot. I sat next to him on a flight from Joe Burg to Hong Kong, and we were talking about about turbulence because they'd had to do a lot of vase of maneuvering around thunderstorms, and he said when they track over the plateau of Tibet, you're going just north of it skirting around the side of it. He said it often felt at least in the flight deck like somebody had grabbed the tail and which is lifting it up and then dropping it down. It wasn't it wasn't violent. But it was disconcerting. And he said, yeah that region is is if it's not that it's it's jet streams. So this it is what it is. It is what it is and qudos because like you the pilot came many times on the PA to reassure passengers to tell me was a kid. There was nothing. We could do that try their best to avoid again moving back up. So that they were going eastwards where they will usually go that route probably voting worse turbulences. But there was simply nothing you can do..
