Sunday Surprises: What Went Wrong With the Vikings?

They got five sacks on borough they forced the bengals to three and thirteen on third down kind of all the fundamentals that you look for me there were decent in the red zone the fundamentals that you look for like a good defense or even a good offense were there but a lot of penalties just took them back. I mean the first drive of the game. They gained forty yards of offense only gained three yards on the field. I'm sure you know mike zimmer. Being the vikings head coach is notoriously intense probably was extremely relaxed in not furious at all about any of these penalties right. Yeah of course i mean. He just rolls with the punches. You know you figure that they will probably take care of themselves now. He was as you would expect. We never hear from them again as being serious contenders. So it's it's it's fluid but men you take a look at the consistency of alabama. You take a look about how great they are then. As i mentioned before mercer florida southern mississippi mississippi texas a inev- mississippi state tennessee. Lsu new mexico. Arkansas auburn we. We used to think that lsu could give him a give them a game but it's not what it used to be. We see now at orange iran. He's now five and six. The last eleven games a little bit different. Playoff game was clemson because clemson wins all their games even if they do of the acc championship and they subpar conference compared to the sec. Can you really make the argument. I think we're going to see a team. That has a lot. More upside from calling perspective can do a lot more with ryan fitzpatrick quarterback. I think this offense absolutely improves. I think diane brown who may knock it on the field quite as often is going to be an absolute stud there when he does she chance to get on the field but my concern is actually on the defensive side of the football. It's it's not a concern. It's just like water. Could problems rise. Arise from defensively. This team got it. Seven wins against some pretty crappy quarterbacks. They can't block and then their home for the jets week. Three and then week four ravens if the ravens you know are are potentially not nearly as good as we thought but i think they could go three no coming out of the gate and sharp by all your research and all your instincts with this stuff. How important. I sound like a sideline reporter. How important is a good early. Start but i really do feel like it is important. If we're trying to figure out these these sleepers if they start three you know. Would that change your thinking here. Well yeah it would it. Would i already like them. And so i've already bet their win. Total over who tom. I think this is a team. I did not bet them to make the playoffs. Whoever because the afc is loaded. And i think there's a chance nine ten wins. They don't make the playoffs but so that way. That's plus one fifty five. If i told you start three you know. So i don't necessarily think that changes my mindset at that point in time that they'll make the playoffs i we need them to win at least two these games. Three of them is what i'm hoping for. You know last year this team and you just mentioned it. Bill which is why i brought it to my mind. They played the number one. Most difficult schedule pass offense as last year this year vic fangio defense plays the number twenty five most difficult schedule of pass offensive mentioned the nfc east. They also get the afc north if we think ben is not what he is ben. You've also got baker. We don't know yet about joe borough and lamar there and then the non division games that they've got they've got the jets. The jags in the lions. We're talking about a ton of teams that drafted inside the top ten. This broncos team is going to be going up against the season. A lot of these teams have new quarterbacks this year some inexperienced quarterbacks this year when you talk about the jets jags and the lions with jared goff there now i just think there there will be opportunities for this defense to really make teddy not have to do too much and teddy you. You mentioned hamlet down the field. I don't know how much of that we're going to see. I think teddy is like more of a ball control efficient quarterback. Hopefully you don't turn the ball over too much. Don't get your offense off schedule. We don't necessarily need these huge big plays. We just need you to get hammers for that. "Why don't we turn our attention? Bruce to the players who will be back in college in. Twenty Twenty On Tuesday I released my spring top. Twenty five a little different this year because usually the reason you put it out the last week. April is that everybody's completed spring practice and we use some of the insights we've gleaned from that to update the rankings. I did the morning after title game. Obviously we did not. So why did you put it out this time? Because people love rankings? Remember the the one up morning after the national title game. We didn't yet know who was going to turn pro. We didn't get there have been head. Coaching changes that happened after that game like Matt Rule Even Baylor certainly lots and lots of coordinator changes. Transfer Portal guys I'm not saying that it drastically altered the lineup by any means. But you know there's you you have more info certainly than you did The morning after the national title game so the hardest team to rank is the one we just talked about a little while ago. Lsu because on the one hand they just had this dominant season and we know their program that recruits well so there's going to be able to reload but on the other hand fourteen guys a lot and To replace fourteen guys that were drafted. Some of those very very high draft picks most notably Joe Borough and generally speaking. I look back at some of the teams that had a huge number like that. Almost always there is a drop off. The next year might not be a severe drop off so the question is okay. I had them number five. I believe The day after the title game I dropped them to eight now. It's not like something bad happened between then and now have some you know. We didn't know who his new coordinator is going to be at that point that didn't really factor into it. I just find it hard to believe you can lose that many guys and come back the next year in win the SEC again. What surprised me a little bit? When I looked I was like wait. You drop them down. They actually like Djibril Cox's it was considered by lot of people as the top Grad transfer linebacker in the country and he ended up going there which is which is interesting to see how fit in going from North Dakota state which obviously wins national titles every year till she was just one one so I was a little surprised at okay. The probably the the one area on their defense. That was a question mark. They showed up from the time. You'd sign there but I don't disagree with you. Having them eight. I mean to me. The biggest loss is going to be jober. I mean he had the greatest quarterback anybody greatest quarterback season anybody's ever had in college football. And you know I know. Miles Brennan has a strong arm. That's about all we know right and so nine Oh yes good receivers Tamar Chase as the best receiver. He would have been the best fever in this draft. He's back but they got to replace basically three. And a half starters on the offensive line and they gotta replace Clyde. That's a lot and so to have them eighth. I don't think that's I don't think that's like eye-popping I was like. I said I was a little surprised that you you drop them Just in time from that but I think that could probably be as much relative. Yeah it wasn't because of anything that it wasn't anything that happens since January in. You're right that was a big pickup In terms of Djibril Cox Just recently that morning that it went up and I'll actually for being honest. I wrote it the day of the game. it's you just get a little distance from that and I mean it could be a very wide range of possibilities probably more than most teams in there. The ceiling in the floor is probably a pretty wide range. They wouldn't be. It wouldn't be shocking to me. If I think they're still gonNA be really good on defense. I think you would agree especially up front on the defensive line. You've got probably the best cornerback in the country extinguisher. You've got to Kobe. Steven's coming back. They should be really good still on defense. It's the Joe Borough factor. It's the offensive line. It's replacing Clyde like those are big questions but if they can answer those questions and maybe they're right back in the playoff and if they can't maybe there number eight maybe they go seven and five like there's such a wide range of possibilities with them. The thing that probably surprised me the most about your updated one was really jumped Texas. A&m High move them up seven spots. So what changed? Or what sunk into you that made you feel like I'm I'm going all in on the aggies pretty much well for one thing. I'm a big believer in bill. Connolly's rankings as you know and sometimes we default to Okay they were. They had this record last year and they returned this many stars. Therefore I'm GonNa slot them here but obviously there's more to the story in terms of how much talent do they have? And I think an last year might have had a much different record if they didn't have to play Alabama Clemson and Georgia which is just an insane insane schedule. There's going to be ups and downs and you've got to stay steady through the process. Our research tells us about Joe. Borough is his own man. If you're Zach Taylor to say hey what's happened in the past. I mean really what you're really trying to do is just trying to measure the expense of someone and they put it down on the ground and you actually hear about guys actually doing hand exercises to stretch their hand as wide as possible although when you're grabbing a football you're actually going to measure from the tip of the thumb to the tip of the Pinky here and this is hard because this is a hard rule and you can't really get good accurate measuring you look tired type by just under nine right. Look I'll give you a non center's Oh that's attention and would have actually done something with my. I mean what's interesting when you watch the tape of Joe Borough? There are situations where people come from behind strip him when he's trying to move up in the pocket and run. I mean that's going to happen if you have nine if you have ten inches so I mean it's not a glaring obvious problem as far as him on the football field and that's why I think it's really. It's just going to be something that will hopefully wind up forgetting about certain the biggest thing is and you know this with all of these drills you know as well. Mike you go back to the tape and you're trying to find something after the fact that says okay. Now I'm going to look specifically at these things so you're gonNA look cold weather rain and then ball security and Joe Boroughs as good as any college quarterback you're ever going to see in the pocket in terms of two hands on the ball and protecting the ball. I saw him in two thousand eighteen the last weekend. In September against Ole Miss. You can go back and watch the tape. My suit was soaking wet when I did the open of that game. It was pouring rain driving rain in anyone who says it doesn't rain in Baton Rouge on a Saturday night is lying to you. Because it poured and he completed seventy two percent of his throws with three touchdowns and zero interceptions in that game. So you go back to the tape and you try to look at these things and what the tape tells you is. He's just fine. You know I had a theory here. I have an interesting experience with hand size so I was forced out in two thousand eight. We were we trade for Brett Farve and just as a fan of sport. I can't wait to go out to the first practice and watch Brett farve throw. There's nothing physically imposing about breath and he goes out there and he's throwing Abe I've ever seen and I ask them like what is the value. Where's this philosophy comes from it? He said you know what Mike I have long fingers and I actually couple of football the way a lot of people throw a softball. I could actually be over the top and that's where I get all my philosophy from just watching my practice. It was unbelievable to watch though. I know as Lewis show. There's a tradition of how we measure hands but finger. Length is actually an underrated aspect of playing quarterback so far so far small hands but long fingers and you know what my pinky and all the time strong throwing football pictures of the five. It's easily the least important finger in the hand and I can't remember it ever being a big factor. It's all there in the grip. The pinky to me doesn't matter. It's archaic. How we're measuring the quarterback's hand span now with that. Said there's thirty four quarterbacks in the last fourteen years who have been drafted that have had hands of nine inches and smaller and really only two of them had any sort of Sustained Success Ryan. Tua Tagovailoa's Recovery Shakes Up the NFL Draft
"Time last year to ten goodbye. Loa was the consensus number one overall pick in the upcoming NFL draft but when a devastating hip injury in November ended his season at Alabama his NFL future was cast into doubt now with new reports. That too is recovery is on track. Teams are debating whether his elite talent is worth the risk and the entire draft. Looks like mystery? I mean at times? It's Tuesday February. Eighteenth this is espn daily presented by ADT. Todd Todd mcshay is an NFL draft in college football analyst for ESPN so todd. The last time we saw Tunga Velo on a football field. He was getting started off with a hip injury and it ended his season and Alabama title hopes along with it. News broke last week regarding the status of his recovery. What we know now well first of all I was there that day and it was brutal to watch behind. He's down to us. Down Helmet came off. This is exactly what you did not want to see happen and I was probably ten. Maybe twenty yards away from him as the to. Mississippi state defenders converged on him. And you could just tell right away. Something was wrong but then I saw the bloody nose at first and they said the trainers got. The plastic wraps in there has the gloves on their hands and and I just thought all right. They're they're just taking care of his nose and he'll be done for the day and then he went to stand up and you could tell just how deep his knee drove his leg into his hip that something was seriously wrong so it's good to hear that he has passed his first test. If you will sources confirm to ESPN at the most recent tests show is healing well and has good range of motion to what could get back to football activities in a month if he continues to progress well and is now moving onto the second phase of of the Rehab and recovery stage. There's still a lot left to determine and there's still a lot of rehab to go so that's going to be the biggest thing in terms of his evaluation between now and late. April's draft is where is he? And what are the doctors really? Think about the long-term WanNa talk to you about his injury and the draft. And you know the time line for all of that but I I wanNA talk to you. About what a good football player he is because prior to that injury he was the base star in college football. And you've been watching him for a long time wind it I strike you. This guy's got this stuff how `bout that throw in the national championship talk. He had never started a game and now he's in the National Championship with the game on the line he was coming off of a bad play was able to shake it off. He's keeping his is down the middle of the field and he's working that safety just a little bit to the right. He's trying to move the safety as much as he can because if he does. He knows that he has Smith's breaking down the sidelines. The is move the safety just enough for him to go back to Smith and make the throw of the year. I mean he just knew the spot that he had to get it to and to come in the second half and to have the confidence to lead Alabama to a victory. That kind of told me everything about him. And from that point he kept developing. But if you go back and just really study his tape the things that make him special his deep accuracy is as good as you're gonNA say he's so quick twitch he's like a drew brees from the left handed side you know just how how works in the pocket and goes from one read to the next but keeps his is married to his feet. He fits what you want in today's NFL. But is he going to be healthy enough to with that hip recovery to to have that quick twitch nece and and the ability to to move as quickly as he has tie? You're around these players but also these programs. What did you hear about how to? Oh was handling the injury in his rehab process. Everyone loves him. There's a calmness and a poise about him that you rarely see with with college quarterbacks or any college player so. I'd like to leave you with this from one of my favorites McGraw songs. When you get where you're going don't forget turn back around and have the next one in line. Always stay humble and kind so confident but so humble talking. Nfl SCOUTS IN GM's not a negative word about him. He's a special human being and wherever he winds up going. He's going to be the face of the franchise obviously but he's kind of a culture changer if you will and and. I think that's part of the draw in part of his value. It's not just this injury right. He's had other injuries that have caused him to miss time. He broke a finger sprained. A knee injured his quad. The ankles even before all of this. How much of a concern with that? It's a big. It really is a big concern and the problem is if you study the history of it if you look back. I think it's the last ten years or seven quarterbacks that had college injuries there were first round draft picks that all of them have had some varying kind of durability issues in the NFL from Rg. Three to SAM. Bradford Shawn Watson Marcus Mariota Carson wentz Teddy Bridgewater Jake Locker. All of these guys have gone on to have injuries now. They're not always the same injuries. Some guys are are just injury-prone and just knowing. Nfl teams in the amount of time and the amount of studies that they do. Especially at this position. Especially with first round picks. That are going to cost you. When you're talking about quarterbacks in the top ten twenty to thirty five million dollars in guaranteed money they're doing the research on this and they all know this. You know your job over the course of these college football seasons you're not just evaluating these players you're thinking about where they'll be drafted if to ahead gun her at that point in the season where do you think he would have gone. I think he would be the first overall pick. I think if two was healthy Cincinnati would be taking to a number one overall. I really do if he didn't suffer that injury. We would be having a great debate between two a ton of Iowa and Joe Borough but ultimately my guess is that too would probably be the decision at Number One and knowing Cincinnati. They'd probably they do something to maybe move out of that spot. Make a mistake and let Miami or the chargers Carolina come up and get that pick. If I'm being honest he's he's better than Joe Borough and I love Jober but if you tell me these two guys are going to have ten year careers with no injuries. I'm taking two but then I've got a measure. R Joe Borough has been durable. Jost has shown the ability to kind of fight through pain a little bit more and to stay healthy and so. That's really the deciding factor. In my opinion I have to ask you know. Why do you think he's better than borough? I mean rose coming off of arguably the greatest season we've ever seen by college quarterback. What is it about two as game that you prefer? If I knew he was going to be healthy I think he just kind of fits a little bit better in terms of what what the NFL is today. Terms of getting the ball out quickly and being decisive and then also when you take shots down the field. But I I love Joe Borough to if I WAS CINCINNATI. I would take her over to because of the durability issues. Borough is worth the the first overall pick and I think Cincinnati would be making mistake if they didn't take jober tied. You have to take proof your analysis because you're gonNA get clipped saying to us better than Joe Borough and that's GonNa Follow you forever. You've been spending too much time around.

LSU Tigers: Top 5 team in the US?
"Want to ask you about a couple of schools that are ranked high and I know you've been to What's your what's your gauge which level of <hes> of expectation for L._S._U.? I think they should be one of the five best teams in the country. If you look at now that they don't have a perfect you know depth chart right now. They are big question marks on the offensive line at least at right tackle but I think the way Joe Borough finished I I think the arrival of Joe Brady from the saints as a passing and coordinator and the adjustments they've made their I think that fits everything well they should be you know really good even though they lose devon white who was a great player in the middle of the defense <hes> they're really talented in the secondary and I think they're pretty deep upfront upfront. <hes> they get caleb on chase on back. He was a player that the guys inside that program raved about until he got hurt last year. I think this is a a team that you know when I look at it. I think there's there's two games that I think will be real struggles for them. They have a game early on at Texas. Which is which is on the road and Tom? Herman has played exceedingly well. He's got his way exceeding well in that kind of environment where it's a heavyweight opponent and everything's right that seems like they are able to to rise up and play while the other one certainly is Alabama for a variety of reasons. They do not match up well I. I think I think quite honestly that L._S._U.. Ohio State football has everything at stake against Penn State
"We got Penn State Ohio State this weekend, and it's a playoff game. It is, what do you expect? Well, and to your point, people always like expand the playoff and go to eighteen sixteen teams. This is a playoff game. It is. This is an elimination game. I'm going to be at another one up. These are the games and we talk about this game on this show because with that playoff predicted that tells you even if you were just an essay. Person, and that's all you watch. You don't watch any game outside of the conference. You need to keep an eye on this one because you're going to see more than likely one of these teams because listen that play predictor at Penn State where to win this game this weekend, they're the ones that are gonna take over that number four spot.
