Tiz The Law Owner Jack Knowlton On Belmont Win

"Will here it is Jack Knowlton visiting with Anthony's to bill on. Red Brand radio. Congratulations on a fantastic win. A lot of people feel like it was seventeen years in the making my friend. Well we finally got our triple. Crown for Sakho Toga for Barclay tag and took us two horses and seventeen years, but from what I understand. It's still kind of fight for Barclay There aren't a lot of trainers at You know is one three legs of the triple crown in recent years. Yeah and you know you guys together. Seventeen years apart, and with New York breads and I know that's the. The mantra over attack a Toga. You guys support that program as well as anyone. Well I was pretty fascinated to learn that it was one hundred thirty eight years since the new. York breaded, won the. Belmont stakes now I know a lot of people are going to say well, then really count you know at you know. It wasn't a mile and a half and Yada, Yada but. In my mind, anybody who watched that race, who questions who would have won that race? It has been a mile and a half. I think the outcome would have been exactly the same as it was at amendment eight. And, Barkley had gone on record is before the race saying you know I would have liked a mile and a half of the source, and he's a horse again. New York Brad and that's what you guys do, you? You've been high on this horse from day one. Well. I watched them train at Saratoga. I mean you're up there and I'd go over at six o'clock in the morning 'cause. That was a time of day that Berkeley landed of track. It was almost darker. She got near the end of the need of what's dark. And not only did he. You know have a good works, and you know work quickly, not crazy fast, but you know good works. But the way he galloped out, I mean they couldn't pull him up. He goes around the second turn. After you know going, pass the finish line and writers just added tremendously difficult time pulling them up junior. Alvarado was riding. Mine is is raised back then, and when I saw that we went into a first range of six and a half furlong maiden mates for New York. Badge I really had a lot of confidence and He's lived up to it so one little bump in a road when he got stuck down inside and the worst part of the race track and Kentucky Jockey Club At. The end of November other than that He really has been flawless. Yeah. That's lobby. Track back in November. He's just been He's been impeccable. The rest of the way the covid nineteen outbreak of course forced post moment of the Kentucky Derby the preakness to. The. Bom obviously the biggest change with the Belmont was not only the two weeks, but the distance. You've mentioned the ASTERISK. We'll get to that in a minute You guys pretty much. And gals I don't want to offend anybody in Saratoga those thirty-five parts of this. Is that accurate? Seven and funny is that I was that six or seventy? You guys and funny side. We had ten ten. Okay, okay only. The same folks lieutenant. And I the only holdovers class. You guys Gus Williams. He passed away several years ago as dead one of our other great partners Dave Man but Ruined I gave remaining to. Stay with it and never in the world expecting that we would get the kind of horse that we've gotten here with the law. And this was an important race for you to win Jack Not that you don't want to win. The Derby again or the preakness again, but the Belmont stakes with your dedication to new. York, Brad's and New York, and let's face it. you know in a game where horses changed hands an awful lot. You and Barclay have been together two decades at this point. This was a very important race for you guys to to tick the box on. It was, and now he's got one more coming up in my hometown Saratoga Springs I've lived thirty five years I know Barkley wants to win it badly as do I and. Really if we can you know, check this box. would include the champagne, which is the the most important two year old race. The Belmont stakes obviously being biggest Belmont. Race and We get the travers at Saratoga. That's quite a triple. And that's pretty remarkable. When you consider you know you started this twenty years ago. As pretty much. Just some friends getting together and buying some horses. We had six guys and Sackett Cyber. I find the eastern end of Lake Ontario I went to high school. We were having our usual. Memorial Day weekend, bearing barbecue, and my wife and I would go up there and visit and I had been in the harness. Business Standard Bread business I guess for about a dozen years and got out. In in ninety four. And somebody up there said well. Why don't we buy a thoroughbred and I said you know figuring I've never gonNA hear anything about it again. I said okay. I said you know, let's each put in five thousand dollars. I knew Tim Kelly at that point who's a trainer and works at is never now. so I got a hold of me and he found this a New York Brad for twenty two thousand dollars. We named him the second sex after the six of us. From Sackett Cyber and came up with the name sack Toga stable after sack I Saratoga and made ourselves Maroon and gray, which are high school college. So. That's how it all started.

"jockey club" Discussed on The Horse Racing Radio Network Podcast

"Problem with the safety pin Later on when the spectacular bid Did what be expected? Great three year old or do and he challenged older horses. He was second to affirmed. And the Jockey Club Gold Cup and And Avellino No. I'm sorry it was in the Marlboro Cup. Later in the year that he'd beat central simply again at they of course have even weights. He won by five lengths. So so that again. indicates the the quality of the horses that That he was running against and then in the Jockey Club Gold Cup. Spectacular bid was second to firm and coastal the third. So so that again. Sort of kept ratifying spectacular was reading really good horses and losing to affirm in the Jockey Club. Gold Cup was just part of a sequence. I've always been taught. That cliche is a great four year. Old should be a great three year old and affirmed had had his time as a three year old being beaten by the great for the the Seattle slew and then at four affirmed was the was the great for your older sister into the foyer and and he beat the Great Three Year Olds Factory. Rebid so it was. It was very foreign for a type of of conclusion of that Ah Racing season and then of course being back spoke the DOC review unfortunately Had A little health problem and was retired early and the fall of his four year. Old Year he'd won all those nine races culminating with the with the Woodward would was walkover One of the odd things. We used to happen fairly often racing but grilling really unusual. And I love the fact. That This chart caller His job was to call colonizing saw him and for the race in which protector bid had no had no Opposition just got around to chart noted he wanted it in hand.

Ballerina: Fashion's Modern Muse, an interview with Patricia Mears

"On your new exhibition. It is truly magical. It's supremely beautiful. Have to say and I learned a ton from its accompanying catalogue which is called Ballerina. Fashions Modern Muse for any of our listeners. Who WanNa pop on over to Amazon and pick up a copy so for any of our listeners. Who like me may not be ballet aficionados? I'm hoping I we can do a little bit of Bali history just a little bit. When do I see the emergence of ballet? And what distinguished? It from other types of dance which preceded it bally's quite an old art form the genesis of what you see today. The basic steps in the positions were already in place as early as the sixteen sixties. The first formal school was started in sixteen sixty one under the auspices of Louis. The fourteenth who himself was a very accomplished valeted Ella. It was clearly an aristocratic endeavor. And you see that carried over today. This would erect posture. This sort of very formal movement of the body so in some ways it is part of that French also regime aspect and we still see it today but ballet's also a very athletic endeavor so it's marrying these two extremes if you will sort of restraint kind of technical Bravura and again. That's why I think they call ballet dancers artists athletes. Yeah because they merged the two and then fast forward. The ballet went from being aristocratic very classical in its themes and male dominated to about the eighteen. Twenty eighteen thirties when women take over ballet's international. It's much more standardized and very importantly the romantic style. The sort of supernatural narrative takes over and it seems that women artists were better suited to express this new ballet form. What can you tell us about the life of a professional ballerina in the early years of the art forum in the Nineteenth Century? What was her place in society very different from today. The Ballerina really sat at the bottom of the socio economic scale. If you will. There were a few exceptions in. Even though there was a flourishing in the eighteen thirties and forties where there were certainly respectable stars By and large these women were very marginalized. They were paid very little and as a result they were often exploited. Many of them had to turn to prostitution To survive and we see these beautiful pictures by got today showing what seems like an idealized environment but in fact often in the back. You'll see men lurking. They were known as the abomination repower men of the Jockey Club and they regularly exploited these young women so many of them had very sad stories even though they were quite accomplished artists and speaking of data. I think there's even a little back story to his very famous sculpture of the fourteen year. Old Dancer Right. That's right that famous. Bronze sculpture is of a young girl She was part of a family where I think her sister was. Also a dancer but sadly she was likely a victim of the circumstances at the time where she hardly made any money to survive. Many of the dancers were hungry. They were physically exerting themselves and this young lady did fall into prostitution as well and probably died a very sad life so yeah it's horrible to think of and so different from the way we view dancers today right and it really is a fact that the majority of ballerinas then and now will never make it to star status. That's right or or you know prima which was a term. That's kind of more favorite in the past right. Today's top dancers are really generally called principal dancers. If I'm correct right why this shift and terminology from Ballerina to Principal Dancer. I think it has a lot to do with the fact that ballet culture came up in Great Britain and especially the United States and we view ourselves as a bit more democratic so the idea of the Ballerina which was a term given to very very few female dancers. You really had to be at the apex at one point in the late nineteenth century in Russia and said there were only six ballerinas in all of Russia was extraordinary So you can see how limited the term was bandied about then but today we view of the hierarchy of the principal soloist in the quarter ballet member but I think it erases the difference between male versus female and one that really I think asserts a sense of achieving it not so much through social connections or through whims but really through technical as well as artistic merit so. This is one of the reasons we see that change in France. They still use the word. A twelve or star to designate the very top rank. Oh Nice Yeah. I'd like to turn our attention to one of the all time greats who we were just talking about Before we started recording Marie Tahiliani And she really rose to international claim in the early nineteenth century. I'm hoping you could tell us a little bit about her. And also her innovations which helped to shape the future trajectory of ballet as an art form. That's right I think Marie Tagliani was important to very significant ways. One was the art form itself. He was not considered a beautiful woman and had certain physical flaws. Someone told me that. She was slightly hunchback and her father who was a brilliant choreographer was able to create dance. Movements that did not distract from that in fact Really enhanced her physical illness She was very hard working and she was a pioneer of the idea of going up on point sort of Now we think of it is absolutely essential in classical ballet for a female dancer but it was very rare when she started and I think the other thing that she did was to raise the respectability of the Ballerina. She was very careful in the way she cost him herself. She was discreet. Show is where pearls she had. A Floral Diadem And the other thing is that she acted very lady like off stage and she made sure her physical depictions whether in costume more in high fashion. We're always done in a very respectable way so she was able to do something. Many other ballerinas could not do which was Garner female audience. Even the young Princess Victoria was a huge fan of hers and so if members of the royal family could embrace. It was considered acceptable. So she was a breakaway star but unusual in that way and and correct me. If I'm wrong queen perhaps named one of her horses Tahiliani. He did tell Yoni was one of her race horses and also there was a stagecoach that ran between cities that was called the Tagliani fabrics after her famous role muscle feed many different types. Candies were named after her and the Russians were especially enamored. There were some bellum who made a soup out of her shoes needed hotel. Yoni mania swept through Europe and the eighteen thirties forties talk about being a mythic. Yes exactly Speaking of iconic elements of ballet. I would be very very surprised if there's a single one of our listeners out there who is not familiar with the garment which is of course. Queen essentially synonymous with ballet and I am of course talking about the two one thing that I was taken a bit backed by. When I was reading the exhibition catalogue was the somewhat body origins of this term. So how did this term to come about an aunt at its most basic? What is a two two while the two two is just the Ballerina skirt? It's costume and when it was invented in the eighteen thirties It was a word that came from. Rather if you will of course background it's a slang or play on the word. Kuku which itself is slang for the petite call. Which is your behind. Basically ballet audiences were different in the way they were positioned back in those days. The people who were members of the aristocracy or had money were always in what they called the box seats or the rings that were on the upper tiers of the Opera House and it was down in the orchestra seats where the more working class people sat and they could sometimes get a glimpse of the Valarie Yes that they were diaphanous garments and so sometimes depending on how she twirled or whatnot it you could get a look up them and they were also bit dangerous they were often starched ahead sizing in them which made them flammable and with the open gas lights. Some of the Ballerina skirts caught on fire and sadly a number of stars did die that

3 Horses Die in 3 Days at Santa Anita, Prompting Fresh Criticism of Racetrack

"Three three more horses have died within the past week at Santa Anita racetrack bringing the total to forty two more sets at the track since December of twenty eighteen Santa Anita had promised a series of reforms in its operations and animal welfare practices the strong group owners of Santa Anita reached out to KNX offering to come on this program to talk about those reforms that was supposed to happen today but yesterday they cancel the interview and only provided a statement which will read a little bit and park later we do have with us to critics doctor Catherine path is a thoroughbred racehorse veterinarian and owner of Hillcrest meadow at Kline in Harrisburg Pennsylvania and Patrick the twelve who is founder and president of the activist group horse racing wrongs thank you both for joining us and Patrick let's start with you so we hear enough for southern California has been I have been hearing lots lately about course deaths at the Santa Anita racetrack but this is not just something that is is at that track this is something that is an issue all across the country is it not absolutely it's initially why Charles so centimeter has averaged fifty dead horses a year going back to two thousand seven but we have similar numbers throughout the country you know Belmont Park just last year forty four dead Gulfstream in twenty eighteen fifty five dead Charles town West Virginia has sixty dead in twenty eighteen I'm just finishing up my twenty nineteen for your request so those numbers are complete yet but this is an industry wide problem horse racing has always kill courses this is nothing new the only thing that's new here is that they've been exposed all right so Dr cancer pap wanted to ask you why is it so dangerous for these courses but what is it that that's causing this many doubts and and why is it seem impossible to get to a horse racing in general or a race tracks in specific to do something about it well I don't believe that it's naturally all horse racing that result in or causes tons of death there are it's four three thing in many other countries besides the United States a ninety nine point nine percent of the horses that race there do not break down they do not die they do not have catastrophic events so it is particularly unique the United States racing industry right now that we are having the outing basically as Patrick has mentioned of death and more transparency has come across in the industry not just with the public outcry about animals and what happened with in and nida but in general our industry is trying to be more transparent and talk about what's going on we can figure it out and fix it but most of the staff they're coming due to pre existing injuries in these animals have come down to basically that there's something small and it is become something big when they race at high speed so and this is for either one of you either doctor pap or or arrive at Patrick about twelve hi if I'm hearing what the doctors saying this is something that really is unique to the U. S. horse racing industry not so much that it's not nonsense I'm sorry to interrupt but it's nonsense we hear this all the time from the reform minded people and doctor pap is one of those not to say that she doesn't care about animals or care about horses but she does like course racing she wanted to survive we hear this all the time about the U. S. death rate being so much higher I don't know that to be true there is no one like me in France say or in the UK or Australia Hong Kong independently confirming the number so anyone who thinks and horses are not breaking down and dying wait a minute yes but when it but by your own admission since there's nobody you say like you in other parts of the world you don't really know if what doctor Pappas saying he is risen tree you don't know what I'm not a term from a professor of veterinary epidemiology at the university of Glasgow him park and he has to physically set out of Glasgow that another approximately ten in every ten thousand start in Britain and Ireland result in a fatality that was a source and not talk to Pat what is the source for that I you know this call in the industry today glad it is published in pod Matt I pulled up the article it has been done through their data they collect they they have a Jockey Club just like we do right who the Jockey Club here in the U. S. lies about the true death rate they don't count training that's the only count doesn't happen within seventy two hours of injury all tracks do not participate in the database for the Jockey Club it's an industry it's an industry tool and the same is being done in these other countries so if you believe these numbers you take them at their word I'm sorry I don't that's why I've only had an Australian seen it myself I've been to the Melbourne Cup I watch the race name amount of races here as I do there and I can guarantee you that there are less deaths in the U. K. and not to mention there's many less racing and they have season so for a fact there are less deaths will both of you hold it I'm going to ask you both to hold your fire for a few minutes we are going to come back and continue this discussion but before we go for a break I mentioned at the very top that we did get a statement from the this tronic group that owns Santa need although they backed out of being on the program today in park their statement says our Klein athletes of the life blood of their support and their health and welfare is our top priority we are disappointed that we were unable to reschedule our interview with KNX today and anyone that the station is welcome to come to the track for tortious see first hand our commitment and care for courses that train and race at Santa Anita Park KNX in depth continues after this

Derby season breaks fast

"Many of the horses that are Derby hopefuls are getting ready to embark upon that road to Churchill downs. Chance at doing. Just that later today in the Macho Macho showman for our good friend. That's trainer Saffy. Joseph Junior who is with me now here on the Horse Racing Radio Network Saffy. Good morning it might Good how about that call chance it big big win. Last time out he was that was the first time going to turns. And obviously the right way the way you want to do it and hopefully they can have a repeat performance about today. Yeah what makes him so impressive to you saffy. If he just carries himself watch him breezing work and he just he has a different going. I don't know that this guy just almost like he votes oats and doesn't seem very rarely. Do we begin to blow even worked some quick times and you never really young to blow. It is a good thing means that uh normally you. You've got a lot more stuff. What of the past couple of months been like for him? He hasn't been out since that win. On September twenty eighth. So what did they been like for him. Yeah initially ever had decided to skip the British back off them. Then we're we had thought about going to the Jockey Club and he got AH virus. I missed it a long time so it changed I mean we wrote it to the race. Remedying the springboard mile but they had to quarantine and we wrong to that race with two Corinthian run homerun allowed to go. 'cause we wouldn't be able to come go stream so then. The next plan was the Moocher match marriage right now. Eastern forty cents seems to be in good form orm looks well and obviously coming off layoffs. I'm facing there's some there's some quality and also that's never know how tight you have them. What we think we got him? Yeah every year when we start seeing the newly turn three year olds make their their first start of the new season we hear that the adage that you know those couple of months from say September October to January can be huge in terms of the physical and the mental all development for these young horses. So compare what you see from chance it today on January fourth compared to what you saw back at the end of September definitely much more relaxed and his works before he wanted to go go now we. We've been giving them targets and he'll he'll sit back and he'll wait for the Q.. And you'll go times go. That's an attribute that he needs to. You'll need to how as a racist got software needs to relaxing and listening to the right around the right asking for that Cinco. Fleeing the writer wants to go so I think that's the biggest developmentally show before early in his career. He playful you'll go on and on but he's all business on the Tran. I think he's mature and more money to lead the biggest aspect in that sense learning to do things the right way and he's always been impressive. He's always he has not laterally talent raw. Tyler there's a lot of calendar he's learned to control yen. He's always been forwardly. Placed in in all of his career starts yes. I don't think he's been worse than third. And that was in his debut when he was Kinda shuffled back a little bit that day He likes to be up close to the pace. Is that what you expect from them again. Today today yeah I think just you just have the naturally high cruising speed that he doesn't need to be on the leader but he just he just naturally five he puts himself a good spot on today. Hopefully gets whoever in their cleanly and liquor is going putting needs to be post time for the Macho Macho Jomon Gulfstream four thirty eastern. It will no doubt go a little bit later than that. Probably low closer to five o'clock by the time they run it but Yeah a big big moment moment for chance. It and we'll see if he can maybe put himself on that Derby trail. Do you look at him right now. Saffy as a horse that is that is a legit Derby Derby contender or do you still have things that that you need to see from him. y'All ability I think he's one of the Best Ryozo there but it's easier. US hasn't done and he's going to have to prove each so for me. I always wanted to prove it before you could speculate but definitely derby driven at the moment. He has a tolerant. We think I think that's essentially a seems like there's no Allenton so I definitely think we're definitely Dermot dreaming but one step at a time and today they will give us a good indication of Iraq.

"Brian Good Morning Komo how you doing excellent and you know the we talk a lot we talk a lot about the regional programs and Maryland millions last week and they got the Ohio people this week and you know go back to the end of the Press Kyle season we had the two year old and Pennsylvania obviously people are taking advantage of the opportunity to to race in Pennsylvania and drop their foles absolutely and as you know the great news it came out this week is that Pennsylvania's up twelve point five percent in mayors red when I look at the number because I did a a you know report myself of say how come we're only twelve point five percent well there was a is a mix up with the uptown Charlie Brown I looked at him he had one mayor Brady actually had seventy three Mares Brit and they straightened that out there apparent elitist mix up the jockey club so that was straightened out yesterday so be add his seventy two on there we're actually twenty four percent over over last year and actually I think we're we're probably going to be up a little bit more net whenever he says everything said and done but you're right I mean Optical are are are GonNa go where the program is the is is the best and I think one of the most important the things is the collaboration we have with the horsemen groups at at the retraction Pennsylvania you know they they're very good about helping Pennsylvania program and You know we paid out over thirty million dollars eight years in a row looks like we're going to be had that number again this year so a lot of good things happening NPA the advantage for those that you know the track this kind of information and it's ebbs and flows I mean there's there's programs that a that have had trouble all you have to do is look at New Jersey and whenever there's uncertainty mayor owners breeders whether they're breeding to race or breeding commercially. They're going to go where they can plan ahead and nobody wants uncertainty and ah that that really has been the continuity and there were some there were some concerns about the the money that that comes toward the the breeding and racing in Pennsylvania that bloomer those those fears were allayed though and and you know the state stands Harrisburg understands the benefits of supporting the program given what it does for the farm community and all the trickle down economies correct we three years ago we put the Racehorse Development on in a trust Why don't sweat say we legislate Peter's put it in a trust and so people are now confident that that money is going to be the air because you know like you said you know commitment is in for a year your commitment coming in it's probably five or six years and the getting some you know some more running in you know you're seeing that with the with the new standards that are coming into Pennsylvania I mean with the opportunity the Warriors Reward Uptown Charlie Brown's doing Doing fantastic uncle Lino peace and just this we just Dr Solomon at Pin Oak Lane form Just ince contract for Normandy in Beijing becoming in another tap it so you know things when when people are confident that you know programs on the right track you know you'll see you'll see that by you know the uptick in the Palm Mares bread and and home owners coming in the mid Atlantic we talk we talk on a regular basis this summer and into the early fall with with Alan Norman and the match series and we had a Lotta conversations about Virginia and the the reboot of of racing there and there's you know there's really kind of an inter- intertwined network really for for people that that race in the mid Atlantic I mean with all the the various program awards that breeders and again whether you breathe a racer or you breathe to sell it folded in Delaware certification and Virginia certification and then if you dropped your foal in Pennsylvania Oh my God it oh you I've I've said this a few times can you can literally win a purse and all the awards could be seventy five percent over and above what you want is a purse right I mean you can you can look at that horse was bred by peasy Patterson and Vicki so we call Paul who WanNa Delaware certified the stake a young won a couple of stakes in Pennsylvania a bread I mean you just you know you can't ask for anything better what run down the awards we haven't talked about this in a long time what are the percentages and are they structured well Both breeders and owners benefit from the plan are free your award for maiden made races is fifty percents are a breeder that's horses twenty five percents so we're taking care of them to any other races the Breeder Award Forty Percent Twenty Percent for others owner bonuses up to forty percents at parks and twenty percent of pen and thirty percent at Chris Kyle we have hundreds of restricted races every year we just put in a waiver of Maine claiming So any maiden want us I'm sorry not any meaning Clinton but at at Penn gene maiden claiming race it's twenty five or higher you can waive the claim if you have a PA at parks it's the maiden claiming twenty where you can waive the wave the claim when we wanted to we wanted to give our breeders and opportune unity to get back some of that money that they put out and they're harder time and effort before the horses eligible declined because as you know in Pennsylvania decent Pennsylvania bread boom that's suckers gone and we we also have have discussed you mentioned call Paul who's competed at the highest level but the the string of Pennsylvania bread great at stake with there's and Breeders Cup runners winters I it the whole program has has just gotten better and better given the quality of bears that the state has attracted and these are successes that kind of feed on on themselves and you mentioned Pinot there's there's any number of people that that understand these dynamics and are going to take advantage and that's why the mayors are showing up and it's a boon to a farm operators in the breeding operators absolutely I mean we're we're breathing we're seeing an increase in the number of foles and also an increase in the quality. I mean we have Prince Lucky running tomorrow and a bold ruler we have mirth that pre entered in the the only American her while we have daddy is a legend who ran a nice racer yesterday a tune-up for the matriarch stakes so you're seeing you know you're seeing this happen you know to eclipse award winners last year Shamrock rose and Bella Unique Belvedere before finest city year before that so you know we're just you know we're we're we're we're

Tony Black Discusses the Jockey Club Gold Cub

"The I have is a Tasmanian she's winning for that state that from at Belmont at without in October of sixty three so I think that's what it must've been construction between the swapped day just to accommodate the construction at one track or the it was four years I it took it took I think four years either was it four years for Aquidneck three years for me and it was it was an extended period yeah I mean absolutely and here on this look at this picture and I'm thinking I just saw joey. NBC Son of the bride farm the originator proprietor his dad and we all the kid goes not too long ago I was at parks and I saw Joey cheesy the sun you know and I said Joe who used to train for your cat burglar Joe Murga they use the net burglar and this was no reflection on his his way of doing business but it was just become at Ryan they would say burglar his business my uncle a lot the nitwits Tasma was a really nice silly sure was and he e I got a picture of her because my uncle had some stuff he was going through and I just wanted to have pictures of my uncle because he wrote up to sixty seven started in forty eight ended in sixty seven and we started walking that taking that stroll down them relate has even mentioned rock rushed and I wrote Rod Roger a couple of times and then I got hurt never low after that but I wrote him and his main race and in his a other than allowance race and then he tried bolt net day with me but he was just learning how to bulk I guess because he really the record aero and he looked like there was no way was gonNA recover that day when when he balked at it the quarter pole independent Serbian an angel guiding back and hand and got his mind back on run and he still won the Derby in spite of giving up the lead at the head of the laying but it's really interesting guys are talking because you come up with so many interesting facts and they just sparks a lot of memories in a and I've got it here Tony the the nineteen sixty his first one Kelso at Akwa the slop actually and then came back at sixty one at acqueduct sixty two was they were able to run at Belmont and then sixty three the at sixty four were back Akwa duct and that's what this Joe Tasma was at accurate up and it was sixty three the mazing how racing the game has adjusted at times when it had to go through transitions and and construction we take a lot of that for Grad I think it's it's a great sport and a course in the forties fifties and sixties I was introduced just do it in the fifties late fifties I realized my uncle was a jockey you know Gordon fifty-one by fifty nine I really started knowing what being jockey was is in in it's an amazing sport in and it was as a kid I can remember going to school and you I second-grade teacher would say to you when you walk in the room jump who do yesterday garden state with Ryan the Tommy Roberts on the radio and sure to feed your from garden state it is but it had so much more exposed back then and it was just needs to be a little kid and your uncle was the jockey and you go to school in second grade teacher him or her out Sam do yesterday it was just really visit was a great area to grow up in being a garden state we've lived around here and I was born uncle lived right down the street and every time I go to Java Complex I can't help but think I'd walk through this area the shopping complex I walked through it and I wonder what born this was I wanted to win more to the racetrack this was yeah and I can't help but to think that like you really turned into no sign of a gun but that's been raging so good to me and I really resisted even when I get on night I voice this morning only got on your credit some lazing how these sources respond to the wind and the crew cab pitchers and I'm thinking to myself here people say we've made these sources you know the people that not you make these horses run and I'm thinking boy you never watched one of 'em crane you idiot because I love what they're doing when you get out there in the morning and one gets the wind up the back and tail up over the back and they're just loving the doc in play and you're on the back open that they go straight because you're you know you're on the back and you WANNA get on back on their back so you get them home and and I'm thinking the ever watch these and play and enjoy what they're doing you'd never make that statement that you make these sources Geez how little right now well I tony I spent that part of that segment with with Steve Thumbing through racing manuals and I as you talk and I pulled you up in one of them and according to this you were born right there in Mount Holly right there Mt Holly Hospital and you know when you got the talking about Keelan and Steve was talking about Jaylen Brown bag mentally that came in and you know I can Robert my I look at it when I went down there for a week derived from Mrs Paxton and I miss his bags and had some nice sources I wonder Ashlin states one of the Chris Braces I wanNA keep an amazing two zero ratio and I never forget when we pulled up don't know what the roads were but he mentioned it and you see the beautiful four rail white fence of Kelly farm you know and yeah and when you're driving from Blue Grass Airport airport tune that track and at four rail vengeance ain't enough we got or railway that's beautiful country and I had is your ride down there and spending a week just you know just because it was in the late Saturday and I was just such an enjoyable week didn't go down there to ride running by them this is taxing only wrote a couple races they're both of them that I remember that I want maybe wrote a few others and then one other time I went back to key eliminate eighty one and I won a prep that they use with the Kentucky Derby or whatever what Jerry Myers outdoors classic Gogo and he won a race and hurricanes then I forget what the race was like the floor runner the Lexington I don't know what the name of the race was but it was just a neat place and it was true only the who's raising capital you know get to see the beautiful farms and you know you went out at night eight and back and drove past these beautiful funds nothing who would want to go on a tour to see what horseracing really is about and what breed opinion and the beautiful mayors and stallions and were what they're exposed to the beauty and care and everything the love of racing that is displayed by everyone who goes to goes to that track and I mean you had young kids 'cause there'd be a day that they entertain the college kids of the young go very big big big you think man this is what racing it really when you go to Gaylon or you go to an event like that really you your whole outlook on horse racing and what a beautiful split it really is so I think Steve's publicist for for these tours and also there is the the initiative that several of the farms put together it's gotTa be now probably was five years I'd bet the Horse Country Initiative and Mike Michael Blown is part of this too with the with the after care portion and creating a destination the whole horse tourism concept that really when you're right it is a perfect compliment to everything else that goes on and and particularly the racing product the afternoons and my hat's off to these guys I mean they do a lot to put the word out there what racing's early about and they go to the next level they actually show you these places these beautiful farms and it's really like I said at your whole outlook on racing and Qinglin what a beautiful track of the beautiful grandstand and the grey stone construction and a better place could you go to introduce somebody to racing

"Jeff Good Morning Good morning how you doing excellent and lots to digest. We've already talked to the J ribbon earlier this morning morning. I want to get your take on what went on about the racist we discussed last week including the the upset which I think is less shocking talking than people. The people are are feeling. It didn't seem upon further review that Mongolian groom was all that impossible well. He wants to me I mean I thought he'd run well but I I really I'd watch McKinsey working. I thought he was ready to roll. Oh and just looking at the form I thought that he would win and he he moved to the top of the stretch like he was going to pounce and then he kind of flat out and I I always had a little sense of doubt that maybe he wasn't quite amount of quarterhorse but this is only a mile and they and I was disappointed and I think Bob Baffert with two do I really was an he's made in announcement that he's going to replace my Smith with a writer that we don't know who's going to be. I'm sure all the the agents are kind of hanging around trying to throw their hat in the ring but yeah I mean I it was I mean it's it's just it's the nature of the game here. We've you see this happen a lot and perhaps the real the real important racist coming up a month from now but if you've you know food for thought as to whether or not the horse that we also at least I thought was the number one older horse in the country. is really that much better than everybody else and amount of quarter. I think it's anybody's game now fold in as well the the result at the Jockey Club Gold Cup and what did you think of the takedown and who do you favor of the two of them coming out west well. I'll tell you what that I I was kind of hoping that it didn't come down and even I thought the three year old is going to win the race going in and what am I ran well. I thought he I thought he had every chance to get by but it was a tough. It's tough to lose a race lightweight like way when push came to shove and unfortunately for her also did come to push he he hung in there I think both both of those are deserving the universal. I'd come already come out west a winner racer over the summer so we subtract and so they'll meet again it's I I. I was talking about this. The other day was Zoe on our podcast and we we were pretty much not baffled. I don't think that's the way but kind of open to in trying to figure out who might win the plastic doors so many possibilities now so many horses that look like they're capable title stepping up some of them that look good or maybe vulnerable so I duNNo. We'll be watching the next couple of three weeks to see who trains the best. Maybe maybe we can come up with a conclusion but right now now. It's really a mess we'll wait till they get the decisions. The final decisions horses like a late and late would add another wrinkle visit I think they're thinking mile and a quarter and the boys aren't that top much tougher for maybe the midnight DC would be if he ran against her again and and a mile an eighth in the in the the staff so that would that would certainly make an interesting well a couple of other thoughts jeff about last weekend the reasons we discussed filled D'Amato just a of magical a couple of days pee wee reese on Friday mirth and Cleopatra Strike in the Rodeo drive and the John Henry able to Geo Story. I keep coming back to it because what can you say and then Sunday Paradise Woods and I ask you the same question that I brought up up with Jay and I asked Sadler too Sadler Sheriff's the other day if she runs that race of the distaff she's she's a major major player and I know she's a notorious in and outer but I thought that was a terrific effort it was it was accomplished under under pristine conditions sitting right outside a speed horse with nobody all rounder nobody in front of her nobody beside her with kind of like a workout for but she did feel the deal as she finished strongly and she earned a beyer speed figure that was something like eight or nine points better than they were not that that means anything but bottom line is she ran really well now whether or not she can do that again I don't know if he pointed out not exactly your model of consistency and I thought maybe your best days were behind her but boy did she work well and I I I yeah I mean you have to go. You have to think that going into the dispatch. This definitely has a legitimate chance I mean if she decides to show up with a game the thing that we're going to start talking about Jeff when when when I'm at clockers corner and and we're watching horses work and when we analyzed the the XP TV workouts leading up to the race between you and Millie Ah Zoe is going to be fitness levels and the one thing you're not going to have to worry about John. The sheriff's Baffert and Sadler is is fitness of these horses on that racetrack and that's going to be a huge factor and I'm I'M GONNA keep referring to the east coast horses that went to del Elmar for the Pacific Classic and God drowned on that deep surface and Steve Asmussen asked me to his credit with with tenfold he learned his lesson and went out early with Mottola because he is not gonna get caught on that element he wants his horses. This is ready to travel over that surface and it's going to be something we we really focus on and then I'm sure in the recap you know after breeders Peter Scott. It's GONNA come up well down. Mars is eat but it's it's not it's not any deeper than in Santa Anita where this is not the old Santa Anita track backwards you know three quarters in eight and change all all day long I mean you have to be did fit to run on. This track is deep. You just tiring you you have to train over it. I think I think it really helps and yeah I think it's going to be very important to to to watch the works and I I do think it's going to be a great advantage for horses to get in early and get a beast of one or maybe even to work over the drag your possible because it's it's not it's it's tough. It's it's it. It's deeper than New York and Belmont Park is I'm convinced of that and I know Belmont to be called the fanny and all that but this track is is big heavy. I mean it's the faith it's safe and that's why they made it so deep but you've gotta get through it and you gotTa. That'd be fit well. Let's get set to look at the weekend and before we talk about Saturday any any day maker ideas for today well. You know it's yeah I mean I I did do a couple of San Anita and I can give the a little bit of an insight today's tough but I like the Philly name swirling in the fourth race she's not the favorite averaged five to two zero six two five in there she's a late running turf sprinter that that I that likes attending through force and they're starting to run five and a half now in the first we've got a couple now they extended the shootout there so she'd found five furlongs on this course a little stripe and she was hitting the boy and running well but just running out of room now she goes five and a half and I noticed in the few couple of five and a half long since we've had so far that the closers have a better chance and she's she's good enough to win. and I think that extra half for a long we'll give her the edge that she needs so I'm looking at number two swirling in the fourth race to kind of heightened me over for that's my play play today. It's an okay car not a great guard but I think we can we can get some value there because she's not going to be the favorite it's excellent all right swirling today and Let's let's go to the weekend and obviously the steak the steak side of things Let's talk about talk about the city of hope I because it it it really is intriguing and I brought up with Jay earlier. Jeff the mixing and matching of older horses. I mean really veteran in six seven eight year olds like synchrony and Ohio and Bolo and catapult facing off against some horses that may be emerging What's your angle in the studio? It's really hard. I handicap this this race and I came up with about four or five that on their best day could win. synchrony is intriguing to me I think he's intrinsically the best of the group but he doesn't have a lot of tactical speed and going a mile on this course even though he's running the tool aww theoretically he could maybe draft into the mid part of the mid packing and save the nangle out and get through he tends to give himself a lot to do and I remember when he came out here for the CBS del Mar last November. The same thing happened. Do that was sixteen. He fell back. He he had some traffic trouble he got. That's where we finished. Fuller Ronnie finished thirty one but but he didn't get there so I I like him at five to one at synchrony shipper I I hope he gets the trip. If he doesn't then you can make a case for a number of these. I mean looking for fifteen to one shot number four on your program. Aziz restrained vengeance. He's GonNa get loose in the lead and if he does that he can be dangerous. TAT upholds training really well but he's form doesn't look all that well you gotta go back to the Kilroy Mile Back in March the finding good but at least it was over this turf fourth and he could pop up Sadler. He's five to one the raises a bunch of the race basically is is a bunch. That's a five to one shots hoping for good luck but I think maybe if he gets through synchrony can win I wanted to I wanted to like River Boyne off the lay off and then John White made him four to one and that that cooled my ardor well you know I looked at him him and he was a very good three year old and he hasn't won at four and haven't made a lot of progress at least according to his numbers and he goes from practice and I'm looking elsewhere. Let's put it that way you know a to go back to an angle from last week as that in fact Jay also came up with and Dash the other filled D'Amato player and here's able to do who the things that just seem to be running for Jeff at at least from what we saw last week while they they ran for a golden gate when he was leading rider up there and I talked to them for a number of years actually we had horses up there and he he wrote for us always felt that he was good enough but he was kingpin up there era and then he decided to make the leap and I thought it might be tough for them but it really hasn't he's really falling favor with the with the horsemen down here and he's a strong writer but he's a good rider as far as and dishes concern. He's coming off a nice win. Del Mar.. He's obviously never beaten this this group although he did run second Mendelssohn and his racing debut of that matters which it doesn't that was way back in two thousand seventeen at the Curragh but but he's he's he's developing. He's he's coming around and the way the model is going. I mean I wouldn't put anything past him and especially in a race like this in which really there is no standout and anything can happen so hey why not wanting to watch a couple of other thoughts. what do you make of this chance Salat Omaha beach matchup the very very different set of three year olds against elders in the in the sprint championship wells twelve sheds lots four to five in the morning line because he's not only the fastest horse in the race in terms of numbers but he's also look controlling speed and he doesn't even have to go that fast my my concern was and it's kind of happened in the Jerkins a little bit then I know that the inside part of the wasn't particularly hit that day but they kinda slowdown down twenty three flat forty five and and he's fast horse and I think you gotta use his weapon and I think going three quarters. They don't have to worry too much about you. Know saving reading anything so I I would suspect he'll bust out there and go. He had a nice breeze over the track. I think Navarro did the right thing by bringing them out early and breezy had a half and forty. He's seven and one third fastest at sixty five last week and he lied did it. The right way looked like he was relaxed like he got over the track very very well so he's going to be it really hard for Omaha Beach the rundown although I my theory about Omaha beach is that he's always wanted to be a sprinter and because he was so good and all the money's going long long that Richard Mandella kept running them wrong and why wouldn't he won the rebel in the Arkansas Derby any may have even able to win the Kentucky Derby had come down with the trap Levada brought his only sprint race of his career only race of seven that he actually sprinted

"McGee Jay Brennan and Dave Greg Good Morning the hard act to follow right there well. I think you're up to it and much like we did with Jay. Hey we didn't get a chance to talk last week. Day I saw some of your thoughts on paper and on twitter but quick hit from last weekend the Jockey Club Gold Cup Diku and everything that came with it didn't agree with the call but that's par par for the course for me and the stewarts here good rates by both horses of Abu kind of the call takes away from the performance of both you know Roseville in sort of honor. I thought it was Kinda. Overshadowed what how well they ran I thought it was in solid effort. You know Roy Moore your skin and people give them credit for so he's tactical enough that you're going to go back to the race. In California that he won he was four why but right up on the pace so he can be he can play from the start and still finish finish which is a good thing for him to have going into the classic and Code of honor you know stepped up against a couple of quality older horses and and still continues to show improvement as Shug shoveling transfer your kid and I'm glad they didn't go into stuff. it'll it'll spice it up a bit very much and we talked to show yesterday what turned into a was supposed to be a you know. Tell us about the decision ten minutes turned into forty because because show and you can talk about the current horses and then you can talk about his Breeders Cup record you know he's he's run horses in the Classic Eight Times. He's got two seconds and third and I asked him if he thought you know this was as good or the best one of the best chances that he's had in a classic and he kind of feels it is I think so in part because he's got a quality improving horse and in part because I don't see a real stand out in the division there you know I I was even if Mackenzie had one last week is still affected him at a mile and a quarter. I think come back with a pack a little bit and now I think he's you know emit commit pack there. I you know he he he was not impressive last week and and right now he doesn't have a jockey so that could be a hindrance so I I think the the you know I I think the visual the classic is releasing. My is right now pretty wide open well it it certainly enhances the classic and we got some. Jay's thoughts will also wait for some other news in decisions. Tacitus you know who I could send as many as three with a late and Yoshida. We'll see what the tacitus call is but have you talk to Jimmy later in the week about preservationists. I don't think the preservation and the clock berry good yeah. I kind of. They were Iffy iffy. Even before we got through the jockey there pretty traditional people. You Know Oh you go to the classic going for a good race. You don't go you don't travel cross country now. It's in your own backyard. Maybe maybe say okay. I'm hearing but the put him on. A plane ain't off that race. just doesn't make any sense to me and. I'm not sure what it was tales right now. I wouldn't be surprised if maybe they they just you know. Have you know conclude are dealing. Just say thank you. Thank you for the memories. They were well some other thoughts thoughts about the weekend the the two year old swept by Chad Brown and not necessarily by Chad Brown surfers Dave that were all that highly regarded regarded coming into the early fall. It looks selflessly ran a decent race when she got in her debut. She was a bit why she was just what about a half length behind her stablemate and you know. She got a very nice trip. The other day and you know you beat a field that I didn't necessarily I think was seller but that didn't necessarily like her either so I can't you know I'm not saying that I choose my choice but look it's very you know. Handicapping is hard art. When it comes to the Grillo it's simple to spend on Chad Brown. It just just do it. Does it seven and eight. I've never seen I've Nev- I don't know of any race that he may be bad for our security security and and and dumb or something that just a guy dominates the race like Chad Brown at least in New York dominates the race Jeff Brown dominates the Mus Grill and just you know next year when it comes. I'm just circle the Chad. He's got more the ones at about boxing and you'll walk out with a little more money so any payment structure solid rates you know. I I liked about structure that he showed you different dimension in the first race. It was a slow pace. He was up on it and then he finished and then they got a bit of a faster pace and close close so you like versatility show. I need to know more about what else is in that race before. I say an annoying Kim and enter a the you know a victory in the Breeders Cup Juvenile Turpin juvenile fillies served interesting I said they were aware of it at the time but selflessly not nominated to the Breeders Cup now looks set clemens got that money hidden in his closet somewhere so he can easily put up the supplementary see but it it was a weird kind of a strange thing maybe just crack but be supplemented for the raiders stuff to run and I'm sure she will do well. beyond the two year old stakes stakes midnight zoo in the Belle Dame and got you got you got her legs stretched and did what was necessary. The race as that ended up surprising to some degree aside from everything that went on in the Gold Cup four Horsfield in that Vosper that ended up being really exciting and forensic fire and imperial put on some show down the stretch cool horses you know he's still still Harvard have trouble taking that race threatens fire and last year the parts race horse averaged one the rate just a cool towards I mean that's a super cool horse right there in so small but he's got such big hardy so fast and you know I think they call it a little bit adviser prize when Friends Fire Collared Him and he still had something more to offer and he gave it to him and you know maybe maybe hard race before the Breeders Cup will help him in the Breeders Cup opposed to a couple of cakewalks that he had especially last year Vosper. You just walked around there and now last year Frears Cup. Chances may have been compromised the fact that he just doesn't run it and go to Churchill downs I mean I think he's on there three times. The probably three worst races throughout the worst rates is I thought he may well enough to del Mar a few years ago when he was in the Mitch Breeders Cup and second. I believe but maybe there's hard rates will help him. battle tough because it's a tough rate expensive very very competitor's. Maybe one or better rates on the car to the totally and chance a lot on you know. I guess you have to see what Omaha beach that rates for tomorrow how he runs. A and B what they use it for work. the the the sprint has potential to come up here one of the best races on the card and I think that race will have imperial head registered. Well turn our attention attention to tomorrow and there's a lot there's a lot of intriguing match-ups paper going into Saturday at and there's actually a nice set races on Sunday with the thirty the flower bowl in the present. We gotta start with Champagne and a green light. Go Ah to forego the hopeful. After the track was a a a slop. I don't blame Jimmy Jerkins at all for taking that route however he comes into the champagne now having to go a mile and there are at least is three others that are are major players here not the least of which is Barkley tag and Saka Toga the last time they had a two year old like like this. They kept funny side against New York breads until going to Florida for the holy bull this time they're going to go for an early open company opportunity the and it's at the highest level the first thing. I want to say that this race is there is a major scratching the race three technique. Jeremiah texted me this morning and I put it up on twitter a little while although has a lung infection and we'll come out of the race and I thought he was a significant player in the field so it's down to six source field going at that. Tis The law law you know of course is very impressive. Beating New York reds first time out had shin issue that Barkley took care of list about three weeks total of training but it's gotten back in I saw I saw at least two if not all three of his three of his works here and they're very solid workout you just wonder if the layoff going a mile with the one rate is going to happen ready to do it now. The layoff is very similar to green like oh the day difference so it's not that sort of balances out but green go with tested in stakes company and also has races opposed to one and I just like I just really liked it. I I don't know what he's going to become. I don't know how far is GONNA WANNA run but I just like the way both starts getting solid well built for uh-huh hardy type of horse who just has a great hind end you know where the power generated from and I think like the mile and beyond and I think this has a moment for Jimmy. Sake that the horses say how down and continue on the campaign Jimmy. He says out born whatever that might be but I think it'd be awful strongest training like that rate.

Jockey Club of America Ponders Restrictions to Widen Gene Pool

"The Jockey Club is concerned about the gene mm pool becoming too concentrated now. Let's be clear the one hundred forty mating limit is not a rule at least not yet. The Jockey Club is considering it nonetheless the ideas drawing quite a bit of reaction across the industry our hope here on this show and the reason we've been a little late in getting a new show up for you is that we wanted to find an impartial you get informed observer to weigh in on the issue and finally we found such a person. Frank Mitchell is a renowned bloodstock expert writing for a number of publications including the Pollack report as well as bio data track international and we are pleased to welcome come back here to win the gate Frank Mitchell. Let's break this down in a couple of different ways first of all in terms of the actual horses themselves and their performances says what are the benefits of diversity as opposed to concentrating the evolution of the breed with a few high performing stallions well how for the purposes of the breed the tendency historically is for the best athletes to be the overall but there's always a significant minority of very good good excellent stallions who are not the top of the tree on the race course you only have to look at forces like Mr Prospector the winter sudden Florida and more recently congrats and went to study in Florida and became leading freshman sire and then the absolute touchstone of the modern horse didn't have an extensive rates record withstanding. I couldn't find a home it said today he almost didn't find one begin win but his his trainer and owner believe in so much that they convinced that Hancock to go ahead and put into studying the rest is history and those horses are still out there and you know they're very small minority dancing type that doesn't let us take is going to be a very small minority of the good stallions but the general effect capping the books is going to help more stallions that are on the margins get a realistic shot at is it best for the breed to have diversity or is it best to concentrate the breed with a few high-performing performing stallions well that is kind of a two edged sword. Most people say we need to have more diversity and that is a good thing for the stability and the genetic viability of the break because if you get too narrow a bottleneck genetically you can create problems for yourself but the horses that are superior sites are always a very small minority of the stallions at Sta uh-huh and they just they congregate and they tend to go one way and then the other in terms of their population and the lines in the northern dancer lie has taken over almost the whole world it hasn't done to nearly such an extent here in the states thanks to the work of bold ruler true is son such as secretary and the mayor line and Seattle slew and AP the Andy through the male line as well as some kind of out liar male line so that we see here in Kentucky too much less extent than a breeding population stay in Australia which is just like top to bottom standing and Danehill generation after generation if you go through some of those pedigrees you'll see three and four crosses sometimes of northern dancer within four generation and it's it's like Whoa so the genetic viability is crewed by having greater variety but the the actual bottom line four months seems to follow certain lines so that the more of certain stallions alliens that you get into a pedigree the better the results so it's a conflict that breeders inbreeding path to have to deal with it head to deal with ever since the breed started and really take online back in the seventeen hundred. I want to go back to something you said earlier. You were talking about the quality of the offspring and you were talking about the hancocks now. Obviously a lot of people have weighed in on this issue one of them in the thoroughbred. Daily News was Arthur Hancock of stone farm one of the leading figures in this industry in America for several decades that cades. He said that his father the legendary Bull Hancock had said to him that over breeding stallion compromises the quality polity of the offspring. What are your thoughts on that. Well certainly minimizes your options for getting the the best you're deluding the product and the more you dilute it the less excellence you can expect but that's it. Everybody wants to bowl ruin and you know bull. Hancock believed what he said because you I didn't think bold ruler breeding any supersized books I mean he's a very fertile stallions very good. We'll beat out. Everything was great with him getting up pretty large bucket. Nobody bread a large book up until the nineties now in that regard. You're talking about the quality of the horses right and because there's also the money issue too. You know we all know that sometimes less can be more if you have something really valuable like I don't know especially issued coin series and only a few are made. They'll each be more valuable so what is more at play here the money issue or the quality issue. I think it's a quality issue that the Jockey Club is addressing and also the Jockey Club's goal is to invent and benefit thorburn breed and race in America and that's one of their slogan but that's one of their reasons for being and to do that they try to encourage thoroughbred racing and breeding to command the interest of the public as well as its confidence and favorable opinion and I think that favorable opinion it should not be underestimated in this day of course wide social media and Television Radio Internet. Everything what do you mean. One of the issues of the the mega books is the popular field that you'll see on blogs and host response lines and things of that is that the breeders leaders in quotation marks are just reading anything to the the best horses and as a result you get a lot of not so good who would sons and daughters of these best stallions that ended up not having home when they don't succeed on the race track and then is going into and I think that one of the small things in the big picture that the Jockey Club is looking at is people's perception perception of racing and breeding and how the over-breeding over-breeding of a horse themes to be almost to financially driven and perhaps causing problems in terms of unproductive progeny that have to be found a home for some fashion. Code of Honor Wins Jockey Club Gold Cup via Disqualification

"I gotta get your input on what transpired Saturday in the Jockey Club Gold Cup and and I should and I touched on it at the beginning of the conversation about code of honor. It isn't so much that there that there was a a disqualification to me the surprise was that they actually went ahead and acknowledged that kind of a herding Ding incident when in New York for years this this is kind of been allowed and people see it and say it's inappropriate three and why aren't they calling these and then when they called it people were outraged explain first of all what's happening when when a horses versus caring you to two and a half three paths like that well you know the person that's controlling the situation of course is the horse that doing carrying out hurting I was known to be a writer that might do that on occasion I can remember one race in particular and and it was in New York it was all my Juliet and you know that leaving the Gate Change Positions Cordero and I around the turn you know when he wanted to be an inside of course not gonNa let somebody through that was really when you it was almost on on written rule. You're not GonNa let somebody on the insects even if defenses where you WANNA billion they'll come around you around the dern and he'd done from the five fifteen taint dope poll to the quarter pole when they come around you. You're going to hedge them out. When you get to that at a stretch of course you WANNA do the amount of hurting hurting to the point where now it's just about over and you don't WanNa be the insiders that initiate heart contact to the outside when they come to the straight straight of the you know it's the Corvo three sixteenths ball because the purpose of this is everybody says well? You lose growl when you're doing stuff like that. I know what you're doing. Is You're letting your the inside horse. carry the horse to the outside of you out and you both losing some ground of course but you know where you're going and where you're gonNA stop and he has to guess how far out you're going to go and we're going to stop so he's writing his voice out at the point of the elbow times instead of like Cara. Keep going out further and further you stop going out and at the point of the elbow Obo especially if you're strange changes. Let's say it's just around the three sixteenth four area where you stray now. You'll let your horse change. You might even bounce your let your horse kind of sway in a couple with civil horse now when you're worse comes in that couple with a horse that outside or doesn't know Oh that you're going to come in and mmediately at that particular point of the elbow. He's still out there so it is hurting but it can be done in a way that doesn't always cross the line what does cross the line is at that point of the elbow. When you straighten out you still going out a little bit and and you actually cause some contact especially if it's hard contact to the outside or then you gotTa Alvarado got getting taken down? If it's just that a gradual movement out your chances are you'll get away with it. I can remember when we were New York at the Vosper. Angel Good Darrow Crane Claims Sal were similar incident. There was no hard contact but it was gradual movement out and I left him out there and drop back. NFL though he claimed how they left by number of but they did take him down on both Forbes because he bothered horse leaving the gate so it was one of those situations sometimes they don't call it and act on it at the stewarts this particular incident you know I made a statement. Even you know what it's New York. It's a good call would've gotten a call it the same way and other places. Maybe not maybe so you know it was close and a top decision wasn't real black and white you know it had some gray area to the stuarts all if they left it up. We're going to be criticized. I take it down to be criticized. It's that's just the type of incident it is. the only thing that makes like I say an incident like that. Being half fluted Braxton is it that Al when they straighten out there still about with movement of the inside West and it causes some kind of hard contact or what appears to be contact Don

"I think it's a good time to to check in with this year's competitive class of freshman sires and talk about some things we've learned about them so far on the race track Saturday's Belmont Card provides is an opportunity to do so with three maiden special weights for juvenile's early on the program. We'll start looking at the fifth race for fillies going a mile silence sixteenths on the turf. Now there are three entries Saturday at Belmont by triple crown winner American Farrow who has emerged as this year's leading freshman sire. You're in this race features. The one I think is the most likely to win on Saturday increasing CHESA Caroliina now. It's no surprise that American Farrell has has sired precocious two year olds. He himself was a champion two year old by sire represented by another champion two year old. It's no surprise that American Pharaohs runners have have already scored multiple wins around two turns now what has surprised some people is the way the American heroes have run on the turf particularly in a Europe where he's already had multiple group stakes performers but it really didn't surprise me when you consider that American Pharaoh was a grade one winner on synthetic turf and synthetic winner and pioneer of the Nile who has good turf runners like midnight storm American Farrell had the potential to be a bit of a hidden Turf Siren his own right in additionally as we've analyzed the pedigrees of his runners to date. I think he's throwing a little bit to the propensities of whatever mayors I he's paired with that comes into play with his three runners on Saturday so looking closer at princess that Carolina she's a half sister to this eclipse eclipse award champion the brilliant and brave lady. Eli Who of course was a stellar juvenile in her own right at these distances now how her half sister is trained by Chad Brown who also conditioned lady Eli of course do you think this philly will want to go to turns on the turf is a juvenile. I think think all the signs add up now. We'll also take a peek at the days six threes which is run under different conditions. It's springtime dirt because this race includes two American Pharaohs in handicapping. This gets a bullet. How a stallion is early on seeming to throw to the preferences of the mayor? He's paired with now certainly American Farrow who did his best work under can and has sired dearth dirt winners along with his turf standouts Joel Stone though is out of graded winner who excelled on the turf and combine that with trainer should mcgahey reputation reputation for giving young horses time and I think this one is just in here to get his feet wet now contrast that with American Perros other starter in the field toward the outside outside mandatory. He's a half sister to this. Mare multiple grade one winner. I'm a chatterbox who loved the dirt as you see here. Mandatory might still want to longer than this sprint distance but I'm banking on him being the one to run better in this spot now. I'd be remiss if I didn't mention inch in this spot also includes son of competitive edge American Pharaohs Barn made and fellow freshman at Ashford Stud. His entered in this race is trash talker now no surprise that competitive edge won the grade one hopeful himself has come out firing with his juvenile to really seem should more suited to the shorter distances than some of his fellow freshman. That's helped him got off to a good start early. He's had five black type juvenile's today and a a few preparing to step up to the level. I don't know that their horses who will train on the distances get longer but right now in these spots the red hot and you can't ignore or them earlier on the card you'll get to see another son of competitive edge dangerous add in this second race another maiden special dirt sprint this race features for other runners by freshman sires unrelenting force second on debut at Saratoga is by Carpe Diem who was a grade one winner at two and three. I expect him to have nice fall. Two Year olds I think about now is one will start getting the middle distances that need to be really successful. daredevil stands alongside Carpe Diem at Winstar. Has It gave you starter in here in Hell Bender daredevil another one of those light competitive edge wjr who was a grade one winner around one turn as juvenile and I think that this one is another one who might be a hidden turf sire being by more than ready in the other two representatives for freshmen in here are are troubadour by palace malice in something to tell you by Honor Code. I thought both these horses verses would have later developing juvenile's and if you're paying attention they've begun lighting up in the last couple of weeks runners by Honor Code that champion son of a p Indy the should relish distance and he's had a couple of late charging winners recently palace malice meanwhile another one who's developing into a hidden turf sire as the son of Kirwin and grandson of smart strike recently had a stakes winner at Saratoga the turf going to turns which is another thing that I expected from this horse so obviously there's a lot to unpack in this talented freshman class with all those names of outstanding racehorses that you definitely recognize. We'll we'll continue to analyze all the pertinent developments here with you. Help you with your handicapping. At out of the gate. Especially as the Breeders Cup continues to draw closer for now. We'll turn our attention back to the weekend action with a closer look at Santa Anita's great ones after this commercial break is.

At the Races With Nick Tammaro

"Churchill getting started would bind with they're the first really too big weekends they also course got the international later in the meet later in the fall and and that brings in some international shippers this woodbine mile just the mile either northern dancer the more you look at it. I thought was was was intriguing and there's plenty of other a lot of stars on the card including Holy Khaleda and pink Loyd. WHO's I I for a horse? That's one like twenty seven in a row. Nobody seems the talk about him or pay much attention to him. Bob Tillers streaking sprinter and here's a streaking sprinter victim Rio depends on where the sprint destination is. I think might Tapei at times but shop racing form a yes to the windows. Definitely Pink Floyd is is really sort of a marvel in terms of how he's performed well routinely I of course needed him to at least be third in this race last year in the contest and finished fifth so the pink floyd stop it will be nowhere near Wreck Stale Ontario and so his chances tomorrow we'll probably increase exponentially. He's in the early. They put the bold venture early on the card actually in fact when I went to the stakes together and put them up Derby Trail Oh. I didn't even look that that early on the card so I didn't even have to go back in fact I don't know if I did go back and put it up but there are a couple couple of very nice horses here including Carlin's honor the Jack Oxley Breezy York good old Yordan approaching half a million dollars for a chiefs would and Stewart Simon you know a lot of your a lot of your local players in the sprint scene but pink Cloyd is now twenty one twenty six and it really was late last year September October that he started to show some some frings signs of tiring and Kinda sputtered out at the end of the year could. Could he be beaten in here. I don't think so no it looks like he's he's back where he needs to be and I don't really know I guess other than Caroline's honor who's supposed to be particularly big threat to him in the spot so he he should get the job done. I mean it's always nice to see good. Horses do Well York than obviously was in much better form coming into this last year having run a good second pink Floyd Royd individual and and that was also during a period of time where pink floyd was having a really hard time getting out of the gate so he's a little ornery for a seven year old gelding and he had a little bit gate trouble really about four or five races in a row going into last year's bold venture he he's not he still not they really particularly the obedient or when it comes to getting out of the gate or being trained for it but he's definitely a little bit better spot with that right now so I think given that he's he's inform and should be sitting right off of the of the pace. If you worked in may be line to the front end. I think he should be okay before we talk about the Canadian the end the grade to which does start the cross country and will incorporate the pebbles and the nightcap at Belmont Nixon thoughts about last week at Belmont. We talked about this Jockey Club Derby and oaks and the Grand Prix. I talked to Andy on Tuesday. The Grand Prix was oddly contest than I thought but some some quick hits on opening the opening salvos at Belmont. I guess guess I'll try and keep it as charitable as possible. Given I took my shots at it last week but I think they played out largely. How we expected decide thought was a pretty impressive winner of the Jockey Club oaks overcoming? I think by all counsel was a pretty negative pace setup and winning is much the best running down Wonderman who I thought probably got a little bit more the run of the race and the American contingent as we expected in that race as well as the Jockey Club Derby were pretty much no shows and it could also be that the American continuing is pretty thin out by now. We'll talk about the pebbles and a little bit but the pebbles is going to be the ninth race for one hundred thousand dollars or more for three year olds fillies on turf going back to June sixth six and that's insane so the ranks of American horses that are ready to go a mile and three eighths early in September. We're really not very not very robust and and that proved out on the lady side and I thought Spanish mission I I actually thought he was totally out of position and thought that he was about to have a Jamie Spencer Special before he was able to overcome it and get the job done so a little bit. I know that the horse was capable of overcoming his writer. I I would imagine he he should be one of the better distant sources that we could potentially see over here next year given that he's going to be off now until the spring and there's just obviously connections that have problems shipping over the Grand Prix North American Jockey Club invitational brought to you by whatever most pretentious name of all time that was one of the most oddly run races I've ever seen first of all. I don't know how the hell everybody knew. Marconi was winning that race for fun and then to watch the riders of both realm and roaming union gather a hold of their horses so strongly almost as if they were waiting for Marconi to catch up and take the lead after he blew the break so that he could go one sixteen flat it was basically sort of the epitome of what we complain about left and right about American American dirt racing right now and you know in this day and age of sort of turf occasion of American racing where everybody points to turf races races are run like turf races. It's almost as if one horse makes the lead all the other guys say okay well. They're the pacesetter we're just GONNA go ahead and sit back and wait for them to come back to us and the majority of the time on the dirt that just doesn't happen even so shockingly Marconi was able to set a pedestrian pace and and went on with it and I I obviously would not have been a big fan of his at the price he went off often. We talked about how it looked like a bit more competitive race on paper the other todd pletcher trainee your to blame. I thought ran pretty well. He was able to stop the pace on the inside but you know I don't y horse like roaming union was in there if he wasn't GonNa GonNa contest the pace especially given that he's from connections like Michelle Navin who generally have a pretty decent idea how to win dirt racist so that was is a little bit of a head scratcher. you know look my personal opinion is that if there's any thought given to this turf triple. I really hope that same amount of money is committed to a dirt program and trying trying to incentivize horsemen to get there and run on dirt more frequently really try and build up the claiming ranks again because it's kind of embarrassing through the first three days of racing. I'm I'm sorry through the first three days of Racing Belmont there were seventy eight horses total entered to run on dirt and there are over seventy eight horses enter to run dirt in the first day at Churchill so I if the same number number of races and and that's that's not good. That's a big big problem that creates a big problem in the winter so that's my hope for it as it is. I guess we'll see probably a little bit better from Spanish mission in the Diese Lisa next year well we turn to Belmont today and into the weekend a couple of very good maiden races actually as part of that card and maybe we'll touch on them but let's let's look at the cross country pick five and it is comprised of of the three three of the stakes would bind the Canadian the mile and the northern dancer that you know you the top of your head. You wouldn't have thought it the three of them were as complex as actually I think they are and then the pebbles and the turf sprint claiming nightcap the eleventh at Belmont so let's start with the Canadian you know this is an interesting field the and really they'll competition. Idea should probably go off a pretty solid favorite. I don't really see how tactically you could make a real stand with her and she's a horseshoe. Obviously needs to lay back and make one run and you know those types generally at the mercy of the pace and this race does not look like it's going to have really any pace speak of so so she's going to have to overcome that now. I will say that you'll Rosario getting back on board to me feels like a very good thing. It does seem like she's just a little bit better horse when he's John Her but now the flip side of that is that we know Joel style. He's GonNa take her back and let her make one run so I mean they're they're going to. There's going to have to be some pace in here that you can't really foresee and I guess the hope is that Dixie moon and or starship do believe maybe show a little bit more speed than they have before. That's if you're back competition of ideas with any great fervor because obviously what this is shaping up as a situation where Holy Helena has a big tactical advantage on the other favorite and and she's been effective at Woodbine in the past. You look good winning the dance smartly last time Jimmy was giving a little bit of time since and I think she's a horse that that will really get the run of the race and and that's GonNa make her toffee. This could be a situation where on your your pick five. You're really leaning on those two pretty heavily and maybe you could give a little bit of a nod holy Helena on one one more additional ticket. I did want to try and make a case for to Riga and my hope is the Tyler Galileo. Maybe a little bit more aggressive with her than Johnny. Velazquez was was last time he finished just length and a half behind the competition of ideas did get into a little bit of trouble amazingly. She got into trouble in the three-horse rates which it happens of course and with a little bit cleaner run maybe second off the off the layoff off the ship in we can see some improvement grim oceans been a little the little laid back with her she she ran on July twentieth didn't work until August thirty first but might be one of those horses that can stay fit without doing that. I I'm always very very in tune and was looking at his horses in these kind of scenarios as they they generally overperform relative to their odds so I'm GonNa go ahead and include Theresa's well the and will include could starship jubilee more than likely those two has backups because I think they each offers some appeal at what should be better prices than the two chalks should note that ah Jimmy Jerkins after sending Holy Elena opt for the dance smartly basically is as left her there and oh my Gosh the stronach trainer but my Woodbine what is yes thank you Mike Doyle. Mike Doyle has been handling and Jimmy is on TV with seth deny after after precision is one and he told the story about Jimmy said he got the notification is it is stable mail all that Holy Helena had worked Labor Day weekend and so gets the notice he opens it up and Airy Jerry Sees Holy Elena six longs one eleven and three Jimmy said got on the phone to this is Mike what's going on up there and he said I really don't worry though or she did it easy. Did it easy the track was the polly was slick. It was cold or whatever yeah what eleven at three and you know what I did. I brought up with Jimmy that great story that is his father told about Bo purple and going out to Hawthorn for the Hawthorne Gold Cup on Tuesday the race as was Saturday and on Tuesday he gets a call from a Chicago sportswriter and said Jerkins. I wanted to ask you for comment about outvote purples work and said what about it. He says well he he he went a mile in one thirty. Two and three Korea broke the track record or mile. I think he went to violent at eight and broke the track record. What what forty seven forty six shades or something and and and Jerkin said you know? I'm sure he'll be fine and sure enough. He went out and won the Gold Cup but that was funny. One one eleven and three

"Seeking to keep the Preakness stakes in Baltimore are objecting to what they call the fallacy that it would cost four hundred twenty four million to rebuild the one hundred forty nine year old Pimlico race course, the former CEO of the Maryland jockey club. Pask was. Ask it was tough to control their and so we lost a little bit. I may have to put you on the front end of Thursday mornings, actually. But. Happy that to have somebody domestic to have these discussions not that, you know, not that they weren't great with Andrew Hawkins and with Pat Cummings. But it it was getting tough to make arrangements for the, you know, the late night chats with Andrew going back to Australia. So it's great to have you. You're you're probably one of the few people out there that. Are doing preview work for Shotton and Happy Valley and press Kyle. Yeah. I I think I might be the only one. Well deck. Let's catch. Everybody up the last conversation. We had we there was in December. And so we've got to kind of get up to speed right away with what's going on at the Hong Kong Jockey club and shot. And of course, yesterday Abby valley and looking forward to overnight Saturday that the the big house. Yes. What's happened? In the meantime, the Hong Kong Jockey club is high of Michelle Fisher to represent them over here. And she is going through a lot of logistical challenges. Trying to get some uniformity with that types with various things that the eighty ws a doing with Hong Kong, and I think it's going to result in month much much wider precision of Hong Kong race and hopefully much much more business on them. So as she goes through that challenge my challenges to educate American batters on on racing and believe me, I can't compete with Android 'cause I read and stuff, and I'm like hacking anyone right? This much on these raisins, but that said, and it's still available on various website. What what I'm trying to do is get the people over here who we might encourage the tune in watch Hong Kong racing. Either early in the night later in the early morning. It's just what what are you looking at you see a lot of numbers on the top for number one. And then big numbers. And if I can't all be long shots. They can't they can't pay eighty dollars to win. Well, the Hong Kong minimum bet is ten dollars. So so looks more than it is. And and Hong Kong like most Trent must most racing jurisdictions around the world, they base their prices purely on the odds and the state is figured and so in other words yesterday's last race, the Dallas seventy two one and on towboat it said seventeen dollars. So for us that would be three forty. But when we see dollar seventy two one we see five forty weeks, we see. Two times dollar seventy plus two dollars. Well, there's no plus two dollars plus mistake in their prices. So that's first thing that used the second thing because of the currency differential. You basically dividing the numbers you see by seven some of the things some of the bed types that you've seen over here dollar thirty type beds for Cornell win beds things like that. So that that part not that difficult shells working on a bunch of things to try to streamline that and make uniform for the new saints. So we were working on that. And it's it's into process because the the great thing is by doing it this way the easy way to set up your own bedding, and just do whatever you want..

"It's a big day of racing Belmont Park on Saturday features, the jockey club, Gold Cup grade one, but there are two other on race has also the grade three pilgrim on the card. Some of the stakes racist didn't come up that competitive diversifies a heavy beaver in the Gold Cup and imperial hint looks awfully tough to beat the Vosper, but the two middle race is actually really interesting. The pilgrims competitive. We're gonna take a look at the eighth race. It's the grade one turf classic. It drew field abate, but this pretty evenly matched bunch of all of these amid chances, the horse on the rail, Robert, Bruce is the two one morning line favorite. It seems like he is the horse to beat in this race pretty clearly opposite in Arlington million. Last time, we'll just take a look at his recent p p is he's eight for nine lifetime. He's only loss came to back in the Manhattan when things just didn't go quite right for him. But this horse has been pretty much untouchable in his other races. It didn't look like he was ever really gonna get the Arlington million last time, but what he really is able to wind up. His Ron get into top gear. He mows down fields really comes with a strong late finish. We saw that last in Arlington park, you would think that stretching tra- mile and a half only gonna help this horse because you watch his one twelve for long race in Chile, to conclude his career. There is a campaign there. He also that day was just kinda grinding it out. It seemed to, he just seemed to get stronger as the race went on. So I think he's got a ton of stamina. I'm not really concerned about the extra two furlongs you know, he's faced a lot of the same rivals that beat him to back at the Manhattan. But that was a race that really turned into a sprint around the half mile. Reefs palmettos doesn't really work for this worse. He's more Ryan ding type that likes outstay his foes. So I think this race is probably gonna be work more in his favor. His can be very short price. I'm kinda worried about that, but he is way the horse to be Niger simply can't be against him. However, at bicker prices are smother horses that you want to consider that I would use his backups or underneath him of your playing exotic wagers dithers to look at is obviously spring qualities. Beaten in Manhattan to back from quality was actually post race in the Arlington million in August, and he had a bit of a hiccup as he got sick prior to that race, they ended up rerouting him to the sword dancer off. You know, perhaps slightly inadequate preparation and I thought he got a pretty good trip dancer just came up a little bit short that day, but he ran another solid race. I've always liked this horse and I've always thought that the more distance was going to be better for him. The sort dancer was raised that was really dominated on the front end. I think channel maker got a very good trip that day not helped result in his second place finish, whereas glories empire, the winner led the entire way. I thought spring quality ran. Well, I think he's got a very good shot in this classic. He's one that I'm definitely using. But again, he's not going to be the biggest price near some others to consider a satyrs joy might be a horse. The lockable jump off the bandwagon of coming into this classic because he just never got on track in the dancer. Last time. Never really ran his race, very atypical for him because he's a horse that usually does show up every time even though he doesn't win that often. I thought he ran extremely well. The Manhattan going all the way back to that June nine at raise actually three back for him. He kind of made a very early movement. They started sprinting around the far turn. I thought he had every right to fly out of the. End of that race, he also Mel over trip was he probably doesn't like that much of the bowling green. He's one that I wanna use. I think he's a horse of defecate, has a good chance to finish the money in this race. It's just is he finally gonna win race. The stretch to my own half helps in probably, but I just don't quite trust him on top. Let's take a look at the pace, productive, finished rates setting..

"Probably going to be a two-horse race coming down to the wire at the best handicap in the horse in the country, however, is celebrate yet. It's not much of a betting race in that regard, but it's going to be very interesting to see what happens here when accelerate hooks up with west coast return off of a layoff here because west coast was good. When we last saw a while since he's been out on the race track. And while he's been away, exceleron has just been making short work of these fields out in southern California. Let's look at a replay because everything's really out there on pay per view to say. We're going to pick up the Pacific classic at the top of the stretch, but the racist already over exceleron has blown this field out of the water, and he's going to cross the wire, twelve plus Lanks in front with a one fifteen Beyer speed figure. This horse just keeps getting better every time they sent them out to the racetrack and I think recency gives them a real edge on west coast. I agree with that. This race was over pretty much a half mile in each just brushed to the front and dominated as you just saw. Got the big recency advantage on west coast. Perhaps though the great equalizer there is Bob Baffert. We know that he excels off of layoffs. He's got west coast focused for the classic. Maybe he's using this race as a prep, but a lot of folks forgot how good west coast got during the summer and fall of his three year old campaign giant win in the Travers, giant win in the Pennsylvania derby. Good third place finish as a three year olds in the Breeders Cup, Classic, and in his first. Started for he ran a gigantic race. Let's go back to the Pegasus World Cup just in against gunrunner who was horse of the world. Perhaps at this point, west coast, tried him on the turn. He tries again at the eighth pole. He's just no match for gunrunner a real superstar of the game here into one seventeen Beyer speed figure in west coast, and he went to Dubai. We saw the World Cup earlier on and talking about thunder snow, and that was a day where you had to have the lead in the rail west coast, conceded the lead and the rail to funder snow, going into the first turn, and it was good night. Irene, he ran a solid second. Unfortunately, he's been body sources that race, it's taken a long time for bap to get him back to the races. But I don't think he sued when barris himself on really interested to see what we get from west coast in this race because I have a feeling the west coast we saw last year was certainly better than the accelerate. We saw last year. The problem for west coast is accelerates a lot better than he was last year as well. It's going to be a fun race. The awesome again, JK's play the. As got to pick three and a daily double beautiful Belmont Park on Saturday and David arrogant is time for US. Spotlight focuses on the very competitive grade one. Joe Hirsch turf classic. Let's go to those segments right now. Everybody will Jake as plays a day. We're gonna head out to Belmont Breeders Cup preview day three grade ones, exciting races, the Vosper, the hers classic. Also the jockey club Gold Cup. Look, I'm gonna start this pick three sequence of also gonna give you a double, but I'm gonna start the pick three in Ray seven with Vosper imperial handwriting, huge race at Saratoga, whether this is a prep or he's he's in it to win this one. He's going to run really well, and he's going to be really tough to beat one five in the morning line, no value there, the wind pool, but you can't add a little bit of value if you use them as is an ice cold, single on a pick three into a pick three sequence going onto the next race. Race, eight, the grade one, Joe hers, classic. I'm gonna use three horses in here. The one, Robert. Bruce is an obvious based on his run and the two million, but he doesn't have to win this racy. He Iran here Belmont previously was six to some of these horses, so he doesn't necessarily have to win here..

"We cover every horse in every one of these major stakes races, Mike, diversify four to five on the morning line and deservedly. So we'll get to him in a minute, but I want to talk a little bit about Mendelson who burst onto the scene this year with his win in the UAE derby. A lot of folks thought gold rail, aided, speed bias, aided you one by one hundred. He came in North America. He bombed in the derby. It was at least nice to see him get back on track last time out in the Travers. Yeah, I guess that that is true. When you go back to that you a derby wary, obviously just had everything goes own way and. Was really impressive. Winning as time has gone on since that rates starting to look a little bit more and more dressed up off that race, but it was nice to see him come back in the Travers. We'll look at the replay of that race right now. Then he bounces back with a more respectable effort. Here. He showed his speed which feels like that's the real running style. He wants to employ. He wants to use his speed. He got to the lead and he's just no match for Catholic boy in the stretch here. A lot of ways. Yes, he took a step forward in here, but he also had the run of the racier Dan, he's no match for Catholic boys. Gonna plug on for second. I don't know. This race didn't really do a lot to turn me around on this. I just feel like he's way to toughen arrays like this. Now you mentioned that they like to use his early speed. The problem is he's probably not as fast as the horse to catch and the horse to beat. And that is last year's jockey club, Gold Cup winner, diversify who certainly has not lost a step this year. He's been awesome in his last two, just stretching fields out from start to finish. Yeah, there's no doubt about that. I mean, he was good win in this race last year where he just got to the lead and he held off a couple of pretty good horses at the end of the. Of that race, but he's just come back and he's been even better this year. His last two races in particular are really, really strong. They're legitimately good and fast performances, and both times if feels like they've taken it to a new level with him, I read or tease just lets him role from the start. Let's look at the Whitney right now. This is sort of career defining win for this horse right now. He just went right to the top. And here he went off fast pace from the start and just ran this field out of the race. And you see him still going here over that sloppy, track his win to back over a mile. Gordon suburban same thing, then blasted out of the gate random out of the race held onto the end. He's in career best form right now using career best form. He was unfazed by that long delayed due to the weather. You see that track is soupy big delay, no sweat for diversify. He's the one to catch. She's the one to beat. I'm hoping that Mendelssohn tries to run with them early because I'm going to take a little stab against with thunder. Snow and thunder. Snow might be as dressed up as Mendelssohn by virtue of his win on the Dubai World Cup the same night that Mendelssohn won the UA derby. He was able to get to the lead. He got to the rail and he kept on going. Let's watch the stretch run of the Dubai World Cup showed his speed to stretch out the field turning into the stretch, and he is just much the best over west coast in a pretty decent group thunder, snow while perhaps dressed up by this performance. He has some other races on dirt and Dubai that are pretty good winner of the UAE derby. He's on fortunately, best known for the antics and the Kentucky Derby last year rebasing just refused to run and that's thunder snow. He's a bit of a quirky horse, but I'm hoping Mendelssohn is the horse that shows at least a little bit of speed and tries to push justify, maybe under snow can sit. Third, he's got some good races on dirge will be an okay price, small stab with thunder, snow over diversify, Nicole, Rousseau's pedigree, pick on the jockey club. Gold Cup undercard it's race. Number five. It's a maiden race with some salty pedigrees and Cole's. Got all the info..

Kickoff out of the gate with our horse watch segment might bear naira analyst found a first time starter at Belmont that ran off the screen two year old Colt trained by George Weaver by the great candy Reid sire, the horse's name is VO Komai made his debut last week at Belmont Park. Let's take a look at the replay. This horse ran very well. In this race. We're gonna pick it up at the top of the stretch. She cruised up on this field three y through the turn though, and he's just going to pour it on here. Take it over a kick clear. I thought he finished very well in this race. Dan, he'll stop the clock and one in four eighty six Beyer speed figure and source. I might have a bit of a future. His dam was grade one winner sprinting on dirt. This is the family of Mr. Greeley this horse ran really well first time out. I would also point out the horse runs second to them. They're Kelly Breen. First time starter dreamer might be another horse. You wanna keep an eye on that is a race that looks like a key race down the road. And certainly a coma looks like a steak source to follow my horse to watch this week. So ready in the stakes division, that's Axelrod. This is hard to believe that he was offered. Fifty thousand dollars in his second lifetime star is he is turned into a bona fide graded stakes source for trainer. Mike McCarthy. Let's go back to last week's Pennsylvania derby, McKinsey, of course, was one of the big names in this race. We see Axelrod on the outside. He followed MacKenzie through the turn, had a big look at it, turning into the stretch, and he just couldn't stay with McKenzie. Late Bob, Baffert, having McKinsey ready to roll off the layoff. I think a mile in eighth is just a little bit far for Axelrod is son of warriors reward. I really like him at a mile mile and a sixteenth, and I'd love to see him contestants like the greeters Cup, dirt mile or the cigar mile plenty of options for this Mike McCarthy, trainee. However, we might seem in the car candy cap. Heck, we might even see him in a race like the Breeders Cup Classic. That might be too tough, but put this horse in your horse watching stable male because this is the kind of where she might wanna follow his four year old. "Donations by my tally of thirty billion. And as a result that left the assets in their charities trust net of donations, they expected to pay out with an ear that left those at about forty three billion Hong Kong dollars at a time, win income inequality, and other measures of poverty are kind of through the roof as our property prices here in Hong Kong context vanish. He doesn't. I mean, part of the argument you're making, it seems is that this happening in a city were the gap between the Uber rich and the poor. The median is extreme. And so the fact that this is Asian, which sits at the heart of the Hong Kong. Elite is not giving as much. Money as it says, it is suggests that an organization that is a very good press for being a very benevolent corporate citizen within Hong Kong is maybe less rosy than it would seem. And in addition to all of that, when you do look at where the money that is donated really does go about one in five dollars over last decade, went to club run companies that cater to the passions and pastimes of the wealthy. So about two hundred forty million Hong Kong dollars win to its public golf course operator and then two point. Eight billion dollars went to an arts and shopping complex in the city center. That's housing, former police headquarters. So this gestion seems to be that, whereas they would argue that they're donating money, disbursing money for the public good actually where little of the funds are going seems to be for the elite who already have the most money to play with anyways, willing fairness, the club, it does distribute a fair amount of money to legitimate causes. But when I. Asked the head of its Jerry's arm, Leone shown why it did not pay out more money in addition to what is spending on things like that. Arts and shopping. Complex public golf course. He only maintained that he wanted to make that arts and shopping complex world class establishment, but he didn't answer my broader question right. One criticism leveled at your argument. Was that look your criticizing organization? Which as you say, does dispersal of money and that actually it's a bit pope faced to criticize them for not giving more when they already give an immense amount. How do you respond to that criticism? Well, I think if you're chief justification for holding monopoly is your charitable giving it behooves you to be transparent and to fill that role to the best of your ability. Now the club's chief executive says it holds onto so much money, the forty three billion to be sure it can fulfil its commitments, but experts I spoke to on philanthropic best practices said that the kind of growth that you see in the trust's net assets over the last thirty years. Makes no sense in light of the amount of regular revenue that is coming in from the jockey club's gambling. Operations said your argument then at its root is saying, not that this is a Rolton organization, but more that it just needs to be more transparent and adhere better to best practice in the philanthropic sector. I think this correct. I think that the impression I got from legislators other people in the NGO sector with whom I spoke when they learned about how much money the trust had and reserves. They were quite shocked, frankly. And one of the legislators Cheung he's a former any corruption investigator said he'd never thought about whether the club deserved its monopoly and whether or not it should maintain ultimate discretion over that charity fund. But that after listening to the figures that I had come up with, he said, it ought to be open for discussion. Last point you've spoken about its connections to the elite of Hong Kong. There's a lot of discussion about the increasing ROY. Role of Beijing in terms of trying to change some systems and processes within Hong Kong. The links between the jockey club, the government of Hong call, and indeed, Beijing just give us a sense of what you uncovered in terms of those relationships. Well, part of what I did for this story was to compile a database of bisbee every pledge the jockey club made between nineteen eighty and twenty seventeen. And all of those these single biggest pledge it is ever made was to fund a three point, four billion Hong Kong dollar local branch of Beijing's Palace Museum at the request of Carrie Lam who's the territory's current chief executive as well as a club member and patron. I mean, there's nothing wrong with donating to causes. They're close to government we, what is the particular issue that questions will be raised about in terms that relationship that you think this points to in that particular case, critics, sort of Saul that move as an attempt to curry favor with Beijing in it came only a couple years out from the umbrella revolution. The student move. That saw protests occupied the city centers, business district in process of China's attempts to exert increasing influence over day-to-day life in Hong Kong. Critics were also pretty adamant that the move also highlighted the charity trust other role, which is as sort of a piggy Bank for the pet projects of top officials that wouldn't get approved by the legislature. But on top of all of that, one of the things that I found most interesting from the data was that about a fifth of those pledges were to government bodies, including about nine hundred million Hong Kong dollars to the home affairs bureau, which is the body test with regulating gambling in Hong Kong. And in addition to that, the club itself, not the trust pays directly into what is called the ping wolf fund. Now that's fun. That covers operations at gambling addiction centers here in Hong Kong before main ones. So you've got a charity, which derives all of its money from a state sanctioned gambling. Monopoly wielding ultimate discretion over. Grant funding. It provides to the very department which oversees it's been -opoly. So that's it sounds like one of the big concerns is this cozy relationship between the jockey club with the government on which relies to operate at. Thanks very much. Thank you. Slash trailblazers. Hello from the newsroom of the financial times in London, I'm Josh able today. We're looking at the Hong Kong Jockey club. The group is enjoyed a gambling monopoly since colonial times. Thanks to its donations ticket causes, but Hudson lock. It found that has been overstating its largesse. He spoke to Revie mat-su about what he got. Hudson, describe to us what exactly is the Hong Kong Jockey club, and why is it so forth to the territory serve the Georgia club was founded back in eighteen eighty four by business magnates and equestrian enthusiasts from the young colony and overtime devolved into what it is stay, which is sort of an elite social club nexus of business and government interests just packed with tycoons and Chinese princelings. It's a very lucrative gambling. Monopoly, it does bookmaking four horse race betting football betting as well as lotteries. And then it is also the self styled biggest charitable body in the entire territory. There are a couple of racecourses one in central one little bit further out which it manages, and horse racing is embedded in the fabric of Hong Kong society. Is that fair to say? Yeah, I think it's totally fair to say. And I think it's also fair to say that a lot of ways gambling is embedded in society here. In fact, in the late nineteen twenty s the government basically the face the fact that its ban on public gambling was not really going to do anything. And so instead what they did was sort of flipped and decided to taxpaying. But what they did was they restricted bookmaking in such a way that the jockey club came away really the only legal bookmaker. And so starting from the early nineteen thirties, the club went from a social club to sort of a centralized source of government revenue through the betting duty, and that duty makes it to this day the single largest tax payer in Hong Kong. Last year. I think that a counterforce seven percent of the total one of the things about Hong Kong junkie club is in home calling you see its logo everywhere on museums and art galleries on centers for the public good as it were. It disperses a lot of money across the city because a big part of the jockey club is about charitable giving. And in your eighteen month investigation, you found a discrepancy between how much it's. Say's disperses in charitable donations and what is the reality? Yeah, right. So the question, the story actually dates back to the fifties, and that was when this reliant agreement was struck between Hong Kong governor and then chairman of the jockey club, there's only one real account of this that I know of. But in short, the chairman approach governor who is struggling to cope with this influx of Chinese refugees who were coming from communist China, they were looking to get a little space between them. Now at the time, the club's chairman called on the governor and said, well, what if we supplemented government spending with a little bit of our yearly take? And this offer also came around the same time that the governor was trying to push through the first ever rise in the colonies betting duty. And so ever since then and increasingly, as the justification of its role as sort of tax farm fell by the wayside, the chief justification for its monopoly has become its charity donations. Now what I found in the course of scrutinizing, it's books. Is that the donations or what it calls donations in its press releases. The number that didn't gets repeated at nauseam by local and international press. Whenever they talked about the club that figure doesn't qualify as donations under Hong Kong law in Hong Kong for something to be considered. A donation money has to actually change hands. So taking last year at as an example, the club claimed total charity donations of seven point, six billion Hong Kong dollars. However, when you look at the annual report of its charities trust going by the standard of Hong Kong law, which is money must change hands for a donation to have taken place there. You find that only two billion Hong Kong dollars was donated. How did they explain that difference in the numbers because on the face of it, it looks like a big discrepancy. Well, the clips chief executive says that pledges by the junkie club are as good as money spent since the club has never defaulted on those. Total pledges. But since the shorty arm was created in nineteen Fifty-nine the gap between what it has pledged and what it has donated the donations made has grown to about twenty billion Hong Kong dollars. So that's pledges of about fifty billion verses donations

"We've touched on this it's a great place to wrap up as we're running out of time here if there's one betting pool in one bet that you envision making on this year's preakness what will it be michael start with us i don't have a good year for this paint i mean it's it's one of those races where you know for a lot of people it's going to be more fun just watching it and son of actually betting on it and there's nothing wrong with that but you know you're gonna have to try to make something out of it i mean that was like the crux in my column for saturday you know whether it's in multirace exotics and you just think justifies the bingo free space and play for surprises in the lakes that surround this race or if you're trying to like you know make a colt try factor and trying to get or like revisal up third you know i think those are probably the best way approach it's it's not a great benny race but it's it's certainly promises to be very entertaining brace surely i i always feel i have to have some kind of bed on a ratio like this and you know and you know one or two one or two cold trifecta combinations is is probably a the most creative thing i can muster all right that's all the time we have i want to thank andy buyer and i want to thank mike watchmaker also wanna thank our sponsor the maryland jockey club just a reminder friday the real pools to highlight lots of good stuff going on but late pick five on friday starting race seven thousand guarantee on saturday two million dollar late pick four starting in race ten check those out check out the preakness hey here's a here's a thought here's here's a bet you can make buy your tickets for the belmont stakes before the race knowing they'll be worth a lot more if justify wins rather than taking reporting cents on the doppler there's my there's my two cents for wager thanks again to everybody who tuned in if you came in part way which i noticed a lot of people did you can catch a replay d r f dot com slash youtube i'm peter thomas fornah town and you've been watching content produced by the r f dot com.

"I was impressed i'm the email on the they ask for feedback and they send to me and i there were a lot of comments people were particularly amused andy by some of your comments about jockeys all there's all this throw that i'll i'll try to be on my best behavior this evening we have had a lot of questions come in already and most of them center around the weather we have an extremely wet forecast for the next few days and there's been a few specific things people wanted to know first and foremost andy i'll start with you do you feel like they'll be any horses in this field particularly advantaged or disadvantaged by the wet track well it this is a rare case where the wet track would seem to be a relatively non a non factor in in handicapping since the the only horses really count in the preakness or coming off a sloppy track at churchill down so i mean there's kind of no you know there there's kind of no big unknown factor i mean unless anybody out there was worrying about how quip will handle the slop mike any particular thoughts by you of any horses that might be suited or illsuited you know i agree with with most of what any just said i mean you know we know that justified could magic can handle wet race tracks i mean at least they won't testify one money racetrack and san benito but you know a safi seal racetrack churchill downs is going to be different from a a sloppy or muddy racetrack publico i mean they are different racing services and not all wet race tracks are considered or equal i mean they're they're different and you know just because a horse handles run wet racetrack particularly well doesn't guarantee he's going to handle a different race track that's also wet with equal aplomb i think what we really have to do in the next couple of days is is to watch and see how welcome macos play because with the weather forecast which like tracks it'd be wet throughout the period.

"Jockey club at churchhill balanced which is a big thing as well he's gonna win at churchill downs do i think he's one of the favorites going forward though like it yesterday now i see i thought forensic file was the host beat no being a derby host of being a one trying to kind of holes and he disappointed me and freeze up billy did as well we also have a uh prep uh to the kentucky derby at tampa bay downs and we have upset inadequate yeah you do we were on so that we were talking about a very cruzi quite up he said no strange things happening attend plans sometimes things that happen in tampa stay uh and it was screaming upset he was quite right i like you know also unpaid debate but where you quite know what best features will hold but they did not run like the horses a saint that they its stocks of the main track but then you have quit then this is the horse uh you know erin pointed out to us quips a beautifully bread holes as gorgeous lucy horseys by a guy who for years and years what's of billy martin does how to trade that good holes coming off a layoff and hustle he ran fantastic and while he's found me you know stumped his kick so the kentucky derby by disorder that you will out of an indian child lead that you can go long he's got a little bit of speed it but i thought i was a great trading job by the young rudolf percent when you look at your uh uh derby lists your top top10 your top five uh next up we have the sunland derby and then we have the florida derby we have the louisiana derby uh are you looking at anybody else uh like we have audible going in the uh a florida derby and the good magic's apparently gonna go and the blue grass what are your thoughts as we continue the road to kentucky automobiles been hole he really is good holds the complex sharon told knows how.

"If you're looking for an example of how it should be done that you can look at hong kong in hong kong jockey club in in what they do they provide everything you could imagine workout videos for every horse uh uh you know they're they're vet their vet records for the day in leading up in all the information that you want an adult i mean i get it but i don't get why uh information is such a a quagmire in our game it's it's it's it's a little bit frustrating in this heartening to say the least if you could take a competitive pricing model with other gambling games and you could read a data to allow other types of apt development and computer basically model wing of the data handle the growth to handle would be explosive now i say these things like they're easy and they're not at all but it folks wanna try to envision a future where road racing really regained some of its place in the sporting landscape sporting landscape is about the change dramatically once again and has the racing has the sort of potential to try to go along for the ride as a potentially superior gambling game two sports or it has potential to get left in the dot in their life i'd love to see i'd love to see someone actively pursue i know that we we have a lot of uh a lot of the torch carriers in our sport that want to point out.

"Death at dale earnhardt a two thousand one that real substantive change and race car safety came about it's taken barbara to do the same for horse racing but it does seem like improvements are on the way dr andrew van apps thank you so much for a few minutes and continued good locked in researching this all important problem thanks baroness and if you are interested in supporting this laminate its research you can contact the grason jockey club research foundation which is the nonprofit organization that's funded much of this work through their competitive research grant scheme go to www dot grason dashing jockey club dot org our thanks to dr andrew van absent a doug o'neal it isn't often horse racing's a microcosm for the dynamics going on across our land but the issue of the take out rate that's been debated hotly could be quite a harbinger for on one hand there are those who think that race tracks should lower the takeout rate the commission that the tract makes from each back they say that returning more money into the hands of the betters will be wagered again so track owners need not that's a very republican way to look at the horse racing economy but keeneland has approached it the other way it's raised its take outraged to draw more money from each back the democrats method a more directed pay with people thinking politics like they never have before every move we make your scrutinized and then saw so the question of the take out rate may be more than meets the eye it might just be a national referendum.

"And the hong kong jockey club is very sophisticated achieve saw the records and other information now if you go to other places like for example the united states you have a race am belmar it's a mile race so horse number one is running sixfurlong races now doing one mile course number two is ships from france and has never run on that incites grassroots never run on the grass horse number three is should be from california and so forth yellow so they're coming from different places different things and it's very hard to reevaluate all over light this year in the in the united states in this triple crown races but three rolls there's about eight horses they were rate as uh we might as cloudy nobody's ira or norway's may plus on they're just uh you know any of the aid could win any to the race in we saw that this week we add a risk called the jim dandy in the way hit a race call detroit a lasko in horses that were not expected to win did win so it's it's it's tricky it's it's it's hard insert the art you'd says a lot of charm to with though and and there is a lot of computerized work we have programmes for all the bats so we we have that in other people have them as well you know to charge too late the blue sizing as you mentioned celli and then also uh hotter generate probabilities and things what are the things that strikes me is why it could possibly be a easier to make money in sports betting on horse races or whatever it might be compared to financial markets issue nar the exact khanna pie out and exact risk going into.
