Lula da Silva Slams Far-Right as Brazil Clears Protest Camps
"I'm continuing my discussion of the turmoil in Brazil. It's a little hard to say where this is going. It seems that institutionally Lula da Silva has the support of the courts, and I say that because the courts have been a very dismissive of claims of election fraud, a B have actually apparently been complicit in social media censorship in Brazil. This is the topic I want to talk about in more detail. I'll probably pick it up tomorrow. Twitter, for example, has been a major instrument of censorship for the, this is of course before the Elon Musk take over of the Bolsonaro people in Brazil. So the court is on Lula's side, but the army and the military and apparently some of the police are on Bolsonaro's side. Now the police were out in force, apparently intercepting a lot of the protesters. And of course, they did the protesters did need to be evacuated from any government buildings, but there was also the police cracking down on protesters on the street. And so guess what happened, I'm actually looking at a video of this in social media. And that is that when the police began to deploy and force on the street to dispel the crowds, the army put tanks on the street to prevent the police from removing the protesters. So all of this suggests that there's still a volatile situation in Brazil and Lula da Silva has his hands full in dealing with it. Now, Bolsonaro interestingly is in Florida. And apparently a bunch of left wing Democrats would think I'm thinking here of AOC, Ilhan Omar, Joaquin Castro. They're like, we have to extradite them. We have to send them back to Brazil. Well, first of all, Bolsonaro is not under accusation. He didn't call for these protests. In fact, as far as I can tell, he has been relatively quiet and in a sense accepting of the election outcome. I said that because what is Bolsonaro do? He basically backs up and goes to Florida.

Oh actors barely got four and a half percent of the more than forty seven thousand speaking roles in the top one hundred grossing movies from each though past twelve years and Latinos make up a huge percentage of the US population but also the movie going public. It's almost a quarter of all. Ticket buyers are Latinos. So was there any explanation explanation about that. Disconnect yeah I mean we had pleasant meetings with everyone And you know and everybody talked about. The things are doing to try to do better better. I can't say that there was a satisfactory answer to that. Issue up they did talk about their different pipelines for writing for directing. You know this and that that they're working on. But as I said to those folks in the meetings look if you're at three percents now of Latinos in front of the camera behind the camera then. Whatever you've been doing doing in the past obviously has not worked? So what are you doing right now. And what do you plan to do to improve those numbers And it's very strange that an industry like Hollywood this considered liberal and progressive. Then he would have worse numbers than the fossil fuel industry the oil and gas industry in my home state of Texas Texas. The numbers obviously don't lie the representation of Latinos along with a lot of underrepresented groups in Hollywood is terrible. Why is it important that that it changed? And why is it important to you personally. Well there is a cost to that underrepresentation in C. Suites In terms of casting directors producers etc and part of that cost is a misprint trail of Latinos. I think get no. We not only affects how the how people see themselves but also how. The larger American public sees a Latino community. So when a president or we're politician or anyone else gets up and says that Latinos are criminals and rapists murderers and people turn on their television set and they go to a movie movie and that's exactly what they see then. It affirms that idea for them that the person who's speaking is right and taken to its extreme. It leads to what you've gotTa Know Paso Texas a few months ago which is a madman driving Ted Hours to kill twenty one people. Because he sees Hispanics as invaders to the United States never mind that Latinos have been here for generations. So Hollywood has to take a really deep and close look in the mirror and start to change and change -serily not just by lip service but actually changed. And how do you think that will come about because we've had study after study leave for the last decade that's pointed out these numbers and it doesn't seem like the needle is moving. Do you see any hope for optimism. You you know I. I was Optimistic after it was conversations in terms of Congress's involvement in Congress does have jurisdiction over tax incentives. That provided to the film industry. Just like different state. Legislatures have jurisdiction over tax incentives. That are offered in different places where movies and television television productions are set. But I I'll tell you I did tell some of the folks in these meetings that for us for those of us that were on that trip for the Congressional National Hispanic Caucus and I think for I would dare say for many other members of Congress we have is a mark Zuckerberg level problem here in terms of Hollywood. We have have a problem where an industry is acting incredibly irresponsibly and doesn't seem to be doing very much to change it so the idea that you would bring executives from from Hollywood in front of Congress. The Judiciary Committee is the committee that has jurisdiction basically over Hollywood. That idea I think is something that we should consider consider. Let's assume that these Hollywood executives who aren't really doing what maybe there should be doing. Were to testify in front of Congress. What would you ask them? Congress has brought different industries In front of it to question them on their practices in terms of hiring and diversity and what commit. But they're making do those things and so I ask him questions about the processes they put in place. I mean. Look when you're in a city that is forty percent. Latino in a state is forty percent Latino country that's eighteen percent Movie ticket buyers. That are twenty three percent over indexed on movie ticket sales and this group of people only has about three percent of the rolls when you combine in front of and behind the camera you get to a point where you have to admit that that's systemic exclusion of a group of people and when we have systemic problems not just individual problems or one person here there air when you have problems. president's reelection campaign that list we shared on Twitter by representative walking Castro a Texas Democrat who serves as the chairman of the presidential campaign of his twin brother William Republicans have accused the congressman of dioxin private citizens and trying to incite harassment of the president's supporters now I find it hilarious that The New York Times which will simultaneously claim that from incited violence will suggest that Joaquin Castro had no role in inciting harassment of businesses whose names he tweeted out and call them complicit in murder effectively so yeah I I'm not going to stand by your standard of causation dies I think that you've got this little mixed up your time has a similar uproar over from donors is playing out in the monied enclave of the Hamptons we're real estate developers are hosting to fundraisers for Mr trump on Friday progressives looking for a way to express their anger and Mr trump and the people who spectrum okay so the New York times openly acknowledging that the people that walking Castro targeted are being harassed so there are times then has an editorial from the editorial board it's called may the SoulCycle boycott make democracy better and then they try to separate off what Joaquin Castro did from what the people what kind soul cycle that which is impossible because it's the same exact thing it is targeting donors to political campaigns on the basis of their politics and then suggesting that they're responsible for great evil and known to patronize their businesses and it is our pitchforks and torches outside their house it is the same exact thing New York times is embarrassed the walking Castro precipitated harassment of specific people but they kind of like a stack again that's a the editorial says this instance like walking Castro's up stage a real concern Americans should want to know more about who funds political campaigns I'm we already have transparency laws in place we already know who funds political campaigns that's not what's going on here what is going on here is that when you call trumpet **** when you call his supporters **** and then you say here all the people who donate money to **** you should not be surprised when the political climate change that you are incurring racks up and continues rack up again I'm focusing in on the left today because the reactionary left is doing this this week trump is raise the temperature in the past and I've read too many one when he has yeah but the the raising the political temperature from left this week has been utterly astonishing in the aftermath of an attack but you to Lisa brought us together for a moment of morning when we're on the same page with regard to white supremacism so the New York times editorial board tries to tries to distinguish the same movement to go after equinox and SoulCycle from what what walking Castro did is that a popular form of protest boycotts more often serve to the people harassed the people that were targeted by walking castles do more of that more of that would be good the only problem is that Castro said the quiet part out loud and the people he target or the little people but if they've been the big people it would've been fine that wasn't I think it's perfectly appropriate to call out major donors for whom they donate to I do not think it is appropriate to boycott businesses in which they invest specifically because they happen to be investors in that business especially if the particularly and only if the business does not reflect the policy preferences of the person at the top so I don't know which businesses George Soros is invested I don't frankly I don't really care because as long as those businesses are not reflecting his political preferences I will shop there I think George Soros donates a lot of people to people I really just like I think that is politics are egregiously bad in many many ways really terrible in many ways I think funds a lot of groups that I really can't stand but I'm not gonna stop shopping I'm not going to become part of a country where everybody is expected N.
