She wanted she because of course, I Google I Lake Wide Marie Jones leave girlfriend. And that was her hope you know her contract was up at least in the article I read that and her call, her six year contract was up and she was at that crossroads of do I stay on this show that I've been doing for six years. Six is a long time. And especially when you're a young actress that's peak-time, you know how this industries work. She just sort of felt like it's now or never and and wanted to pursue her movies, which was like the end goal for her and it is kind of crazy that I don't feel like her just do. So funny. Beautiful today but like when she was on girlfriends when they were at the height of their popularity, the show I'm speaking of it is literally she looked like a movie star in it may more sense to me vertigo straight down the lane of like you know mainstream movies. "Everyone. Welcome back to American billiard radio. Today is Thursday may second and I know to episodes in two weeks. It's it's shocking. I don't know what's going on. I still think it's leftover energy from the the enthusiasm that that Nate was showing from the queue it up podcast before. I get started on Nate has again to episodes of the queue it up podcast this week. And I know that the one he dropped today. Thursday may second is a three way conversation that he and Mark Wilson I had about the US open and the streaming kind of expanding on my little rant from last week. I'm not going to get too much into that rant right now. Today's episode is all about the US open, though, we have a US open champion. I talked to Jay Helford this week. Jay was at the US open hoping to cover it for. Z billiards. And honestly, Jay's Ben at the US open year after year, and he's ran tournaments and promoted tournaments and played internment. And really he has much more experience in turnament than well than I possibly have. Before we get to that though. We have a couple of winners. Kevin Chang won the WPA Players Championship. That was the fifty thousand dollar vent that took place just before the US open. Carlo Biondo took second you. Lung Chang took third in this event. Any also took third in the US open, which that's a pretty good finish for two third place finishes. He ended up with seventeen thousand in prize money. Kevin chang. One ten thousand for firsthand Carlo Bianco, one seven thousand for second Johan Chula finished tied with you. Lung Chang for third place now while that event was kind of a a lead in to the US open. I understand that that's not necessarily going to be the case forever. There's already talk of a second event hands the WPA doesn't know when or where they will schedule that. But I guess they're not stressing over making sure that takes place before another major tournament. As far as major tournaments go. Josh Wolff filler won the US open for for anyone who didn't watch it happen online, he defeated Wu shushing in the finals. Woo was was down five racks. And all the talk was the five racks that he had broken ran fifteen years ago when he won the world nine ball championship. He want to and broke the third rack left himself jacked up over ball hand when he got into his stance to address the cue ball. He tapped the four he knew what he did. Nigel Reese knew what he did. Woo. Woo stepped away from the shot Nigel called the foul and filler ran out. Don't in any way. Think though that filler backed into that title. Yeah. He got a couple of roles, but everybody's going to get roles. You're not gonna win a tournament like that without getting a role here and there, and I would be willing to bet that there were other players got roles against him to Josh was very deserving champion. He played great. He now holds the world nine ball championship and the US open nine ball championship. Like Jay mentions in the interview. It's the first time that anyone has done that since Earl Strickland a long long long time ago. Filler is certainly the front runner for player of the year. But we've got a lot more events to be played. We had a a little it was a challenge match. It wasn't necessarily an action match. Shane van boning played Joan Lin Chang Chang had a huge lead after day one of this event. It was an overall race to fifty. So when one of the players got to twenty five on day one they stopped at for the night. They came back the second night. Second night was last night. Shane made a huge comeback. I know at one time Chang was head twenty one to four. I don't know the final score as of day one. I wanna say it was like twenty five eleven something like that Shane made a comeback but Chang held on fifty to forty three. So that earns Chang entry into the tournament that was talked about on last week's show the twenty thousand dollars tournament that'll take place believe they said it was a week after derby city. Also, I don't think it was yesterday. Maybe it was the day before it either way. It was announced that on August. I Justin Bergman will face Shane van boning that will be on pool action. Tv takes place at club. Be billiards. In Wichita, Kansas. Ten ball race to twenty five. Best of five sets one. Per day. So he could go three sets could go five sets twenty thousand dollar entry per side. So forty thousand in the middle again. That's august. I put it on your calendar. Now, at least the first second third. Justin Bergman, Shane van boning pool. Action tv. So like I said I sat down with Jay Helford this week. We talked mainly about the US open talked a little bit about his books, and he even mentioned that he's got a tournament again that he's working on. So without further ado, I give you to pay J J Horford. I'm very proud to be joined from California. How long have you been back in California from the end of the open three days three days, still fresh in

"I'm Steve Inskeep. And I'm David Greene. The leaders of the United States North and South Korea have all said in recent days that they are willing to hold more summits to resolve the ongoing nuclear crisis at the same time the prospects for a diplomatic breakthrough are looking increasingly dire. And here's Anthony Kuhn has more from Seoul, just maximum meeting with President Trump in Washington, President moon Jae in told his aides Monday that it's time to prepare for a fourth summit with North Korean counterpart, Kim Jong UN which would hopefully lead to a third summit between Kim and Trump the last one ended in February in Vietnam without an agreement. Cheung's will as soon as North Korea's ready moon said that Correa's will be able to sit down together, regardless of venue informat and hold detailed in substantive talks Pyongyang insists it doesn't need anyone especially not soul to broker talks. And j Langkow the Russian expert on North Korea had combing university in Seoul says this puts moon in a tough spot. His political fortunes are tied to the North Korean issue and economic growth at home is weak. I would expect it no scallions would not welcome in the Senate because going to safe, but as Jeanne for growing domestic trouble. Meanwhile, in Pyongyang last week came Joan Lin said he's willing to meet with Trump again. But not if Trump tries to dictate the terms of deal like he did in Hanoi. He says he'll give the US until years end to come up with a better offer Linkov says Kim clinched, wait out the Trump administr. Ration-, but he also realizes that Trump represents a rare opportunity. He's only American presidents was able future who've you'll be feeding to passively implicitly accent, no Scalia as nuclear power Kim is also likely to hold his first summit with Russian president flat. Amir Putin soon. It makes sense for into lineup support from allies that the problem says Linkov is that Kim doesn't really have any. He says China has the money to keep young young float, but it's not willing to risk violating sanctions in Russia dome. Count on more than I don't know ten rubles. She'll buy you a Cup of coffee in Moscow collision he ends with little money to spend unconventional military forces Moscow is particularly reliant on nukes. So it may be even more worried about nuclear proliferation than the US. Anthony, Kyun NPR, news soul. We have news of a new way to attack cancer. NPR's? Learn that doctors have used a powerful new gene editing technique in cancer treatment in the United States for the first time that news is just the latest about the technique called crisper. Some news has traveled much of the world as a Chinese scientists announced last year that he used crisper to create genetically modified babies now this less controversial news NPR health. Correspondent rob Stein sat down with Rachel Martin. Okay. Rob. Let's start at big picture. Remind us all what crisper is exactly crisper, basically is an entirely new kind of genetic engineering that give scientists the power to edit DNA make precise changes in DNA much more easily than ever before. So scientists think crisper could revolutionize medicine the way we prevent and treat may diseases by doing things like fixing genetic defects or modifying the genes inside cells, basically turning them into drugs. So. Is that what that Chinese scientists was doing? He used crisper to edit the genes inside human embryos, and that means any change he made clip passed down for generations to come in this case for medical treatments. The modifications are only being made in the DNA of individual patients. So it doesn't raise those brave new world scenarios about reengineering the human race. Okay. So explain what is happening now. Yes. What's happening? Now is we finally reached the moment crisper is moving out of the lab and into the clinic around the world for medical treatments until now there's only a small number of studies where scientists have tried to use crisper to treat disease, and they almost all but in China treat cancer now scientists in Europe the United States and Canada are launching a wave of studies to try to use crisper to treat a variety of diseases. Here's feared or earn off. He's a scientist at the Altius institute for Parlamento sciences. It's he atom 2019 is the year when the training wheels come off and the world gets to see what crisper. Can really do for the world in the most positive sense. Okay. So what does that mean? What are we talking about here? Yeah. So the first blood disorders like sickle cell disease in the similar condition. Janette condition known as beta. Alycia? And in fact, the first beta thousand Mia patient was just recently treated in Germany and more are about to get their blood cells. Chris Byrd soon and second hospital in Germany, then they'll be patients treated in Toronto in London and the first sickle cell disease. Patients could start to get the DNA in their blood cells edited in this country, really soon, and there's yet another noteworthy study. And that's a study that's going to try to treat an inherited form of blindness. And the reason that's noteworthy because this will be the first time scientists try to use crisper to edit the genes inside the human body. The other studies involve removing cells patients editing them in the lab and infused the modified cells back into patient's body. So those are all very important conditions and diseases. What about cancer though? Well, Rachel one study involving crisper is underway in the United States to treat cancer at the university of Pennsylvania. And I just learned that to patients have been treated there for multiple myeloma and sarcoma but several. Other cancer. Studies may be starting soon involving crisper this year in places like Texas in New York. Okay. So all of that is exciting all of that seems like very positive good news. But is there a dark underbelly here? I mean are there concerns about it while sure, you know, whenever you try something completely new and something as powerful as this people always get a little bit nervous that something could go wrong. Everybody remembers the early days of teen therapy when some patients, you know, even died, here's laureate Zoloft. She's a bio ethicists at university of Chicago. I talked to about this human on the planet should hope that this technology works, but it might work in might not is another. This is an experiment do need exquisite layers of care, and you need to really think an advance with a careful review. How you do this sort of work? All right. So do we have any sense of of when we will know if these crisper treatments are working? Yes. All these studies are really early the very preliminary and their aim primarily testing whether these experimental crisper treatments are safe that said, the scientists are looking for clues about whether they might be helping patients so we could get glimmer of that sometime later this year maybe early.

"Hello everyone. Welcome to another episode of American billiard radio. And it's been a while. It's been God. It's been over a month since I've done a show. It's completely on me as if it could be on anyone else. I went to Virginia for the international nine ball open. And then had a little bit of a vacation if you will. And then just got behind more and more. So ordinarily, I talk about the news, but we've got five weeks worth of news. So it's not something that we can catch up on quickly. So let's just touch on the highlights we have a international nine ball. Open champion Joan Lin Chang. I implore anyone who loves to watch top level nine ball to join the Accu stats program on video. So you can watch these matches as soon as they're put online the final day was just amazing. The hot seat match between Chiang and co and in the finals between Chiang and co were some of the best nine ball that I have ever seen and. They really seem to have a different style than some of the American or European players watch the matches. See if you agree with me. Maybe I'm just crazy. We also have players for team Europe and team USA. And what's interesting is we had five players for team Europe. And then we had four and now we have five again with Mario he testing positive for some sort of a drug that was banned by the International Olympic Committee causing him to withdraw from the Mosconi Cup team. Again, I'd like to reiterate something that some people don't seem to be paying attention to Mario withdrew from the team match. Did not throw him off the team and. People look at it. And I hear people say will this is crazy their pool players where they drug testing them will at the same time. These people say why isn't pulling the Olympics. If pools were going to make the Olympics. The first step is what Europe is doing in drug testing. Their players Europe is trying to do things the right way. Unfortunately, Mario got caught up in the situation. He got caught up in Europe trying to do things the right way. It's terribly unfortunate. Everybody hates Mario is going through certainly match room. The European his his form European teammates. And the whole plan community. I'm sure that that Alex Kazakhs who took his place isn't even happy about it. But. Europe is trying to do the right thing. I don't think you can blame anybody for this. It's just something that happens. I don't know what I'll go so far as to say that you can't blame anybody for this next. Little piece of news. The tornado open being cancelled we had talked to Vivian a few months ago. She said she had TV coverage for this. This was going to be a huge event. And this is now two major events in the back half of this year that were cancelled with the ballpark open in Saint Louis and now the tornado open big kudos to the rooms on the east coast that stepped up and put on tournaments for the European players who were already in the state's getting ready to play Vivians event. They they really helped out the players gave them something to play in some added prize money. At least something we also have a junior nine ball champion from the United States. Mceal Paris won the gold medal, and that leads into my interview for this show. I interviewed ROY pastor from Massachusetts ROY was at the event, and I've corresponded with ROY number of times, he's been very helpful in covering junior events junior. Nationals Unum it ROY. Is there Roy's involved with it? And I'll let ROY tell you everything that he's involved with because I think that it's it's very interesting. I think it's a very Frank and honest interview. But Roy's trying to do something about it. You know? I I did I did an interview with with Dave many years ago. And yeah, I was a little bit angry when I did it. But I had gotten tired of people saying will this is what we need for pool. This is what somebody needs to do. And the idea behind the interview was what are you going to do? You know, we can we can talk until we're blue in the face about what somebody else is going to do. But what are we going to do ROY a good example of that ROY is doing an awful lot? And it sounds like he's trying to build on that even more. So without further ado, I give you ROY pastor. And I'm very happy to be joined this week by ROY pastor all the way from Massachusetts. Now, ROY you wear number of different hats, all part of the jute. Well, not all part of the junior program. But it sounds like the majority of it is part of the junior program. Can you tell our listeners everything that you're involved with? Well, I'll I'll give it a shot. I m. Been a I'm a p currently PBA master instructor. I've been teaching I've been teaching kids and I've had junior programs for about. Oh, close to eighteen years. I've been going to the been attending. I take to the junior nationals be Kerr. Now, the be junior nationals every and I've been doing that for maybe fifteen years or so I'm also on the board of directors for the BF. I I've just gotten back on the board. I was on the board maybe eight to ten years ago, and I'm back on the board. Now, I've been been to have a number of my junior players have been my students have been pretty successful. And as a result I've been involved in the number of years and some of the international tournaments as well besides the national tournaments. So for instance, this past just recently, I I was able to travel to Moscow what the as one of three coaches and team leaders for the American team along with Tom Rosman. Dr Q and Tom could beanie from the b-. And which was a lot of a lot of fun. So we've been three of my students were on that team on the American team issue. So I've been I've been involved in one form or another particularly with the kids for a number years primarily because of the junior programs. I run. Involved in three junior programs now in New England.
