Just a few months ago those meal kit companies, you know, think blue apron, we're Wall Street's darlings, and that kind of faded when the companies went public now, though, the Wall Street Journal says restaurant and grocery deliveries are the big thing with investors figuring that's a trend that is not going away. Pitchbook reporting venture capital firms have put three and a half billion dollars into delivery services among them insta- card door, dashing post mates. That's so far this year that's more than triple the amount. Last year. I'm Joan Doniger on eight ten and one zero three one WG y Joan right now, mostly sunny, forty three at eight sixteen through joined by Steve Boucher time to talk a little bit of money right now. I see Kelly thought couple of interesting kind of disturbing money stories yesterday. There's a go banking rates survey that showed almost sixty percent of Americans have less than a thousand dollars in their savings account and about one and three people have no savings at all. You know that happens in this country ten years ago when we went through the great recession people were really scared. About their future in the savings rate actually went up. I keep saying that was one of the good things that came out of that great recession it twelve people that they needed to save. But now as we go through some good times, and we've had ten great years. People aren't thinking that way in this survey is really disturbing. There are so many people out there that just won't be able to retire or they'll have to live on social security, which averages about sixteen seventeen thousand dollars a year. And if you can live on that that's great. If you can't you're gonna be in trouble. So people we always say people need to pay themselves. I they need to put money into their pension plan at work or a Roth or traditional IRA come out of their checking account before they get used to spending it if they do that. Then when they spend what's left over they won't feel as bad. It's just getting people used to paying themselves. I so the reason that most people cited for not having any savings. I'm living paycheck to paycheck. I have a low salary have a high cost of living had too much debt. Don't have a savings. Account and I forgot so some of those are valid reasons like salary and living paycheck to paycheck. But I forgot is really not a good enough reason. But this may be another reason that people will have any money in their savings account is there is a report released by the United way came out yesterday and showed about half of people in our area are struggling financially and about forty three percent of households. Just in the capital region are living just at the poverty level that seems awfully high to me it is. And we talked about this. You'd think about Amazon coming this Kodak eight hundred jobs, and these are going to be pretty good paying jobs for people that can't find work in. That's what this capital region area needs or more these jobs where people are getting paid a little bit more than minimum wage with some benefits. So they feel good about living here and raising their family. They can afford to raise their family. How many times do we talk about? Just the price of gasoline coming down in those few dollars every week. That are tumors are able to save for some consumers. They may not. Realize they're saving it look for these low income consumers. They absolutely no they're saving money in their pocket. And that's money. They can spend elsewhere on their family, and that's huge. So I'm not surprised by this week. There's a lot of people out there that are truly just trying to get by the people that need our help. Somehow, someway, Steve who talked about social security moment ago. There was a report that the checks will grow in two thousand nineteen but at the same time we're talking about the possibility of cuts to social security and Medicare what's happening here. Yeah. Well, you know, the social security this is believe it or not in the last seven years the highest increase that social security we have received at two point eight percent. It's like thirty nine dollars a month on average that people are going to get a bump in their social security check once again, some people will say all what's thirty nine dollars. But you take those people that are just living trying to get by thirty nine dollars is a lot. Now, you have the. The tax reform last year from the president in his administration that is taking revenue off the table. That's hurting our deficit in some people feel that social security needs to make cuts, and they probably do they just won't touch it. Now, they need to make anybody on social security, now know anybody nearing social security age. No what they can do is take the full retirement age. And maybe bumped it from sixty seven sixty eight that sports might move will make a huge difference in how much money's paid out. And that gives young people forty fifty years the plan on that. Should they be able to plan for that? Absolutely. These are just the small tweaks that social security can make but it's a time bomb. Nobody in Washington wants to touch it. But we really need to look at it. The deficit this country is out of control, and how much weren't dead is just being on what we can really except. You could hear Steve every. Saturday at noon here on WNYC Boucher. Thank you so much. All right. Kelly by read. Now. Eight twenty one on eight ten and one two three one WG why traffic.
