"jj davani" Discussed on Caught Offside

"Caught offside. With Edward gundling and JJ davani. Oh. Yes. Caught offside from just outside of New York City and from an apartment in Brooklyn, New York and drew gun lengths. JJ devani, what's up, brother? How's your vacation going, Andrew? Very nice. Very nice. I'm at home, we're doing a lot of housework. A lot of things around the house. It's not exciting. And that's all I have to say on the matter. Is this what they call a staycation? Yeah, yeah. Although I did have a family reunion over the weekend. Oh, down the Jersey Shore, which was nice, cousins, uncles. All my cousins. From my mom's side of the family. Not all, but a big number. Is that the side you despise or I don't despise any side of my family, you're a monster for even suggesting that. We all have one side we prefer, let's be honest. Is that true? No, actually it's not. I just thought I'd try and stir the pot. I'm believe that you have now said what you feel, but you're quickly trying to cover yourself. No, I'm just deflecting see you alone. We can go without talking about the unpleasantness yesterday. Oh, so that's what's happening here. Now, I refer to, of course, Liverpool's unpleasantness for who at Old Trafford. Oh, pleasantness. This should be called the title is easy for this one. This is the shadden Freud pod. My Freud is very much shadowed today, Andrew. I have a prediction. Yeah. If united click back on and become united again and Liverpool enter some sort of, you know, their time is up phase. Like not just this year, but for the foreseeable future. My prediction is this podcast will cease to exist three years from now. You see, that is where you're wrong. Because and it's where people get it wrong. They get it wrong a little bit. I suppose wrong is not the right word, but I enjoy when united lose. But nothing I say about united isn't like from what I think about where they're at. Like up until yesterday, nothing I said about united has been wrong. Absolutely nothing. And even yesterday in some ways, you know, dropping Ronaldo, Harry Maguire taking to see has been has been kind of like vindicated. So I don't think the podcast would stop because of that. I think that's what you'd like people. That's the narrative you'd like to set about me to people. I honestly think if Tottenham were to be relegated. There's much more chance that this podcast goes into the toilet. JJ? If I survived the Mourinho era, I can survive anything. Because I supported him, I was wrong. I heard about it, not just from our listeners on a weekly basis, but from you constantly, they'd score 5 goals and you would tell me, should have been 7. I couldn't win. It was torturous. I could survive that. What are you talking about? I could survive that. I can survive absolutely anything. I believe what state August 23rd, August 23rd, 2025. That is the potential final date of this podcast. Enjoy us while you have us. And you don't want to right before the U.S. host the World Cup too. If you could only hang out just a few more months, JJ. We're not making the U.S.. Just a few more months. By the way, there's so much more to talk about, not that I am trying not to talk about Manchester United's win over Liverpool. But there is so many other things to talk about from the weekend. I'm not even going to start there. No, we're not going to start there because I did the rundown because you're on vacation. And in my mind, I was like, there will be a mini freak out amongst our American listeners. If we don't begin in yank Shire. What a day. What a day at Ellen road leads united three, Chelsea nil. Boy, I have so many thoughts on this. I guess my initial one, though, JJ is just like from the broad perspective of just like how weird is this sport where like Chelsea can look the way they looked a week ago and then have this happen to them against what we deem to be an inferior side. It's just a very, it's just a very weird game sometimes. Yeah, I think there was a lot of that going around. It certainly was at Old Trafford, certainly at Saint James's Park games, which we'll get to. And it started at Ellen road on Sunday. And that's why I think it's been a really exciting start to the season because while I wouldn't say there's it's too early to talk about parity or it's too early to talk about, you know, the league is going to be much more exciting this season because of X or Y, but the start of the season has lent itself to this kind of result. And let's be honest as well, not just Chelsea and the Tottenham, the excitement of the Tottenham game last weekend, the Derby, but like Leeds came into this one and okay, they'd won their first game against wolves, but they'd put in a kind of a sore soul performance that blown a tuna lead against Southampton.

"With angry gundling and JJ davani. Oh. Yes. Cut off side from the upper west side of Manhattan. Andrew gundling, JJ davani, what's up, brother? It's dry evening Andrew, but I'm glad to be here. Yes, dim. I'm excited by this podcast. It's another free wheeling summer pod. I love it. People like the free Wheeler nature of the last part. Yeah, we had a nice response as the wheel returned. People seem to enjoy it. I know I did. It was a lot of fun. And we've got kind of another similar one for you. So I, as I, as I do, every once in a while, JJ, I checked in on the animals, walked among them. Went into the cages. Solemn throwing feces at each other. Yeah, and then I put on a hazmat suit and scampered out. But Newman, their leader. In response to the podcast that we had just done with the wheel of football that we hadn't done in a while, Newman posted in the Reddit page. He said, I haven't listed yet. Just realized, did they stop doing red card and men on the match? If so, why? And then captain coconut responded and said they do what they want and are accountable to no earthly force. That's that with every week that goes by on that podcast that's getting truer and truer. Well, I'll tell you this, captain coconut, and Newman and other animals. We are accountable, and you're right. I don't know why we stopped doing red card management. I have no real reason. I do because it was becoming a slog to come up with stuff and I didn't want to feel like because some of the stuff it could be, you know, it had a freewheel in nature. Like one week it could be, I hate the new women's Euro 2022 soccer ball for the tournament, which I actually do hate. That's just popped into my head there. All right. I don't like it. I don't like the colors or whatever. And then the next week, my red carrot could be an act of serious racism. And I found that juxtaposition, a bit jarring. Yeah. I guess so. That wasn't my problem. My problem was just there were weeks where if nothing struck me, I didn't want to have to force something into the podcast. Whatever content we include in this podcast, I want it to be worthwhile. That was maybe there were too many weeks where I felt like I'm just putting this in there because I feel like I have to. I don't know that I would have talked about this. Actually, your reason is probably more accurate. You can have any reason you want. You're a grown adult. You can make your own choices. But we have heard you and we're actually devoting this entire podcast to a series of red cards and men or women of the match. The whole thing. And then a male bag at the end. And by the way, this was your brand child. And I would like to Newman's and captain coconuts. Newman has, I mean, we might as well get him on the payroll. Whose end is it coming out of you looking at me? Maybe if we combine it together, we could buy Newman, a pack of sweets. A shirt. Maybe a T-shirt. We don't even know. But a plain blank one, all right? No logos, no colors, just white. But yeah, we're gonna do the whole podcast on that. So I'm really looking forward to it. Like I said, a mailbag at the end. So this should be a good time. We'll just go back and forth here with red cards men in the match, but should we just get right into it? Yeah, don't make that noise again. All right. Well, here we go. I guess there's really no other way to start than with this. Red card. I'm gonna go first. Boy, this is weird doing in the first three minutes of the podcast. It feels so good. Get into it. A lot of people, you know, I often thought what do I do with my hands? With the longer podcast, people probably missed this stuff. I know. You know? So now it's the chance. 98% of our listeners are saying right now, what even is this? What are they actually even talking about? I'll get right into it. My first red card in a series of red cards, the Chelsea curse of the number 9. So let's talk about this. Romelu Lukaku it now appears as headed back to enter on what right now is being termed as a loan deal. So let's get him out. So it temporarily ends what was just a disastrous first season back in the Premier League for us. One that you 29 year old striker. One that you counseled midway through. I did want to relax. And I would do it again because I think at that point in the season, duty wasn't listening. At that point in the season, I don't know that the freak out was validated. At the end of the season, it was validated. Oh, okay. Okay. I mean, look, it's a loan. It's hard for me to envision him playing another game for that club ever again. As long as that manager is there, bleacher report, so I talk about the curse of the number 9, which has now become a well documented thing. Bleacher report put out a tweet yesterday with a number of past Chelsea strikers on it with the words the curse of Chelsea's number 9. So can we go through them quickly and then we'll circle back to Lukaku. So obviously Lukaku is the captain of this team. 97.5 million pounds, 15 goals and 44 appearances. Alvaro morata across two seasons, 47 appearances in the league just 16 goals. Cashman JJ, back in Matthias casement, one of the, not the early, but one of the well, certainly a marine yo signing. And he was rubbish. Yeah, one season 25 appearances four goals. Gonzalo iguan, which I think a lot of people were initially excited about. One season, 14 appearances..

"This program tonight. I think anything on bone and taking his mother. He's not ready to do it. I did. I did. I did a two karaoke great restaurant. We had Italian. I bought a champagne. Everything. Yeah. Now I should have gone to a skeleton. I've never shot an Italian restaurant there. Okay. Now because only you. I tell you what, because the British players only knew about one place in Oslo, and if Craig wants me to go there, he doesn't want me to go there. That is smooth. Where they always went. Well, let's start there. I wasn't a noise law it was coins wenger. But you know, we want to go. Shut up. That's a real reason. Unprofessional. What do we mean unprofessional? Try to cut this out. It would be nice. Not Italian. We'll be back tomorrow. Are you having a Norwegian? No, Norwegian no. Apache, get that volcano going in. Yeah, yeah, yeah, shanks, fine. Don't worry, no time. Bye bye. What can you learn to know? Hi, this is Andrew gundling and JJ davani from ESPN's caught offside podcast with a look ahead to the 2022 World Cup part of ESPN podcast moments that matter series presented by supercuts. The smarter, easier way to get a haircut. It's not just any haircut, it's super cuts. I don't say this to demean the other teams in the group. I believe the U.S. should feel that they've got to get out of this food. And if they don't, I think they will, I think this World Cup will be looked upon as a disappointment. I think so. I think a second round birth would be looked. If that was squandered, it would not be looked upon kindly. Here's the real question, though. Will that be enough? If they get out of the group and lose in the round of 16, which is kind of what we've become accustomed to, will that be enough? Will people say, well, I don't know that it will be because if you look at they're going to play a team from group a now we don't know the order, but like if you look at group a, it's fine and both of my dark horses were there with the Netherlands and Senegal, but like, I mean, it's Qatar, Ecuador, Senegal, and the Netherlands. I would say the Netherlands being the possible exception. But pretty much any one of those other teams, the U.S. could go against and I think people would say like, okay, it's not Brazil. You know, it's not Belgium. I know. But I think Andrew, those of us know how difficult Ecuador can be. Those of us know from I'll tell you right now, if the U.S. gets Ecuador in the round of 16, good luck telling American fans that they shouldn't be winning that game. That's moments that matter presented by supercuts. Supercuts is the perfect way to get a haircut if you're someone who doesn't have time for a haircut..

"Caught offside. With Edgar gundling and JJ davani. Oh. Yes. Caught offside. Suburbs of New York City. I'm an apartment in Brooklyn, New York, and Jay J Danny. What's up, brother? I'm good. How are you? Doing well. Doing very well, beautiful week so far. Another international week. Love these weeks, JJ, the season, normally I feel like there's a little bit more buffer. Yeah, you talking about you love them. I love them. This week has not, I have not loved. Like, why? It's complete George. I'm feeling like I needed a break. From all football after the Premier League finish, like just a little bit of a gap. And I can only imagine what the players are feeling. If I'm feeling this way, like some teams are going to play four games in the next in like a ten day period. You're right. Here's the one difference. Here's the one difference though. And look, comparing yourself a fan to these players is laughable in its own right. However, I wasn't. A little bit, but here's the main book go on. You as a fan of Liverpool football club have been put through the absolute ringer over the last four weeks. A lot of these players who are returning to their national teams were on teams whose seasons kind of petered out. So like, not saying they weren't trying or not or weren't going hard. Yeah, tell that to Kevin De Bruyne. Again, some of them, not all of them, but a lot of these players, seasons just kind of ended normally. You are in a Liverpool frame of mind. No, that's been through. Chases and Champions League finals and chaos in the streets over just the last three weeks. No, that's not even, that's not actually true. I'm sure it's true. I'm sure it's part of it. No, no, no, you just say things on this podcast and they're taken as gospel, by everyone, more of which anon. And it's amazing. What you say is like solidified in like storm tablets. And that is that is law going forward. If you give me a chance to say, one of the things that really has me like fatigued and tired was sitting down to watch Ireland versus Armenia in the nation's league on Saturday. And, you know, going into it with a sense of optimism. And to watch the performance and get beaten one near, you're like, okay, just caught me off. And on Sunday, I had the opportunity to play myself, go out in the evening sunshine on Sunday evening and play and not watch the U.S. Uruguay. Like, record it and watch it later, which I did. And I was so glad I didn't say it. Well, you know, I should watch this game. And so I don't have to watch it later. No, no, I was so glad I did that. I think it was bob duggan tweeted us and he said, do you guys not just get sick of this? I know you love the game, but after a while, do you not get sick of it? And I'm like, yeah, sometimes it's absolutely freaking relentless. And I guess I wanted to respond to that also. He's not wrong. He's not wrong. What's interesting, though, is I don't think that has definitely happened to me. But I don't think it's ever happened to you and I at the same time. Like, I don't know that like right now, here's what I think you're underestimating in me. My obsession with this current U.S. men's national team. I wish that I could form a petition and insert them into the primary league and compete. And I want to watch them weekly. Even when I even when I hate them and I'm mad at them, I still love them and want to watch them all the time. But a 1000% been moments where I said, I need a break. There were moments during the Mourinho era, where I needed a break from the sport. It all had become too much. But I'm not there right now. I'm not there. But I do think that international on a more global sense. Or a view from an overview, international football and just football in general, just it's asking us to care about so much right now. And while the nation's league, I think, has been something of a success, more of a success than just meaningless friendlies. Definitely more than that. There is a point where you're like, all right, we're playing the nation's league. We've got a World Cup in November. What are these Nations League games for? All right, they're for the following European Championships. That's when they'll affect them. How will they affect them? Not entirely sure. We're going to have qualifying for that. Yeah, that's right. So if I qualify automatically for that, I don't need to worry about it. Correct. But if you don't, well, there's a chance you get in. How? Not sure, but it's there. And it'll happen and suddenly there will be a fixture list and you'll have more games, more games till the end of time. Have you hit some kind of breaking point? Are you okay? You want to sip this one out. I'll just go, baby. I snapped the events in Yerevan. At the weekend, just.

"Caught offside. With Edward gundling and JJ devani. Oh. Yes. Caught offside from the upper west side of Manhattan, Andrew gundling, JJ davani, what's up, brother? Andrew, you know, we didn't get to talk about this last week, but last week you had a leaked proposal about how the semifinals and final would be done away with. And what we would have and instead would be like this weeklong festival of football. Based on what we saw during the pandemic. Nobody wants that after this week. Nobody. Are there people just sitting in a room somewhere thinking of ways to change this? Why? Find something else to do. Redirect your resources. It's perfect. It's perfect. I tweeted that they need the European Union need to slap a protection order on the Champions League. So you know one of those old buildings you walk around in foreign cities are even in New York, and it's got this big plays on it. And someone famous was born there, or it's the same. There's a merchant house on the lower east side across from the yeah, I saw them everywhere growing up in Philadelphia. They were all over the place. Yeah, and you can't touch them. Like no planning permission can come in, except for essential repairs to keep them standing up. Otherwise, you're not allowed to mess with them. That's the Champions League. Champions League is an old brownstone in which Edgar Allan Paul watched his first Champions League game and therefore we can never touch it. I'm so excited about everything that's gone on. Over the past few days, when I was in college, my friends and I, we created like a club and unofficial club at Syracuse. I bet you did. It was very unofficial, but there was just a group of us that a lot of my friends there just happened to also love soccer. In a time when soccer was definitely growing and like the U.S., men and women were big, but like club, European club soccer was still kind of like getting off the ground a little bit. FIFA was in its real prime. So you could see it building. Fox soccer channel helped. So we created a club called sorry to go to crash Andrew the club was, I mean, you can just say it. You can just say it was the Communist Party. No, but we lived in a section of the university called south campus. And so we created we would tape the games, Champions League games that were on during the day. We would all avoid the scores during the day and then we would all come together at night and watch it. And it was like a fun, it was a really fun thing to do mid week when you're kind of like Wednesday, it's like Tuesday, Wednesday of the school week. It's like, you're trying to look forward to the weekend. We had this thing. And so we called it the SEC CLC, the south campus Champions League club. And I was so excited about everything that's going on. You can't see me JJ, but we had jerseys made. And I'm wearing mine today. Wow. Proudly. That's very cool. I have to say, that commitment is pretty great. You know, and it's a great time, you know, a great use of the time you should have been using to, you know, meet girls and I was dating. I was with my now wife. I forgot college. How dare you? Trying to get me to be promiscuous outside of a relationship. I'm a monogamous man, JJ, all right? Let's talk now. There's so much. I almost, I mean, well, I do know where to begin. First off, I want to say congrats to you for Liverpool being back in the Champions League Final for the third time in 5 years. You are living in quite a moment, my friend. This era just continues to get better and better. We'll talk more about the Liverpool match after the first break, but I just at least wanted to get that out of the way. I don't want to bury that so much of this podcast kind of revolves around our fandom. And I know if Tottenham were in this would be, I'd be screaming right now. So I can't let that go on set in the first few minutes of this podcast. Congratulations, my friend. Thank you very much. I always feel weird getting congratulated for something I had nothing to do with. No, but that's not how it is on the show. You know that we take our fanship very seriously. We do. And look, what you said is absolutely right. To quote a better commentator than me, drink it in. It doesn't happen that regularly. Although it has been regular under clock, but you know it's cyclical and you just can't take for granted these great moments. So just appreciate them. And I think I know it's a cliche, but the one game at a time thing is really, really, the way to absorb football when you're as good as Liverpool are right now, just every game means something, go into it, the thrills the spills and just, yeah, drink it all in. It's so good because I remember when this time of year for Liverpool fans, mostly under Brendan Rodgers, Rogers and the managers we've had before that was all about transfers and it'll be better next year when we get XR Y in or when we sign him or just it's so lovely to be at the business end of the season with football to talk about other than just.

"Caught offside. With Edward gundling and JJ davani. Oh. Yes. Caught offside from the upper west side of Manhattan Andrew gundling, JJ devani. What up, brother? Happy birthday, sir. Oh. Thank you. I believe you're not a big birthday guy. No, not really, no, that's not. I mean, I'm not anti, but I've never been one to like, you know, sometimes people will talk about their birthdays or all the things they're doing. And I don't know, to me, it's just not just not me, even this conversation I know feel uncomfortable. Yeah. And the ten seconds we've been talking about it. Do you feel debt clammy hand on your shoulder? Always. But that's just a regular day of the week. You know, I did, I knew you were going to bring this up because you're a good friend. You texted me early this morning. To say happy birthday, which was nice. And so I knew that we were doing a pod today. So I then knew that you were going to bring it up. And so I'm not going to tell you this story because I'm looking for any sympathy. I just want that out there straight away before I even say any of what I'm about to say. But have some ready. Because I know how you paint me on this show, like on the living embodiment of eeyore, that I'm just kind of like this doom and gloom guy and doom is always lurking around the corner. And so you have a low opinion of yourself and of life. But you amplify it, which is good. That's fine. It works often times the picture you painted me aligns with reality. There's an episode of The Office JJ that I was thinking of as things were happening this morning, which I will describe in a moment where Michael Scott, it's his birthday and he's having a terrible day and he's reflecting on other bad birthdays that he's had in the past. When I was 7, my mother hired a pony and a cart to come to my house for all the kids. And I got a really bad rash from the pony. And all the kids got to ride the pony, and I had to go inside and my mother was robbing cream on me. For probably three hours, and I never came outside. And by the time I got out, the pony was already in the truck and around the corner. So that was my worst birthday. So I think of that because a, the picture you painted me and B so this morning, my kids, they wake up, Jack comes in, wishing me a happy birthday, which was very nice. And then Luke comes in, he asked for some milk. I give him some Luke has never, other than when he was a baby and babies just kind of spit up. He's never actually thrown up in his life. This morning, at about 6 30 a.m., I gave him some milk. He took it. He put down the cup. He leaned over, and he threw up all over me. Wonderful. I Jack and I flew out of bed and I thought, okay, that like what? So he obviously is not feeling well. I feel that's why I say, I don't want sympathy in this story. He's two and a half. Like, I feel bad for him. I only bring it up because this happens to be happening on my birthday and you paint the picture of me as, of course, it would happen on your birthday. Then I'm getting ready to take Jack to the bus stop. We're running behind halfway out the door. Second time of the morning throws up on me again. And I think, okay, this is just, this could only help. It's on purpose. I think he's doing it on purpose. Yes, this could only happen today. And JJ will love this. So that's where we're at as we now begin recording here just a short while later. Pukey birthday. That is where we're at. Two wardrobe changes later, and I think he's fine. He went to the doctor, and I think he has a stomach bug. And they said he might even be able to go to school tomorrow. So all good. But yeah, poor guy. Watching your kid be sick is like, he was lying on the floor. He does not do that. Like he just laid down, I put a show on for him, and I went to the bathroom, I came back and he's just lying on the floor. It's just like a sad sight for a parent to see. But so that's where we're at on this 38th birthday. JJ, what a what a weekend of footballing action that we had. We felt compelled because this is going to be a dual podcast week, obviously second legs of Champions League semifinals. There was always going to be a pod mid week to talk about those. But because of some of what went down over the weekend, we felt that we really had to come in and do an additional one here on this Monday morning. Should we get right to it? I suggest that we do. We put the puke to one side and get on with the podcast. So JJ a wise man once uttered the words, started from the bottom. Now we're here. We will do the same. Let's go to the bottom of the table and begin their first. That, to me, is probably the most compelling story coming out of the weekend. People may disagree, but I'll start by I'll start by simply saying narcis over. We've been kind of talking about that for some time. We kind of put it on the back burner because it just felt like it was an inevitability. They are relegated..

"Caught offside with edry. Gummy and jj davani. Oh yes offside suburbs of new york city apartment in brooklyn new york and begun lane. Jj vani what's brother. i'm very good at. That's what's pod. People are more concerned about you. are you owe. i'm fine. don't you worry about me. don't ever worry about why because of north london darby. Yeah and then. The eagles take a shellacking dallas cowboys seattle. That wound is still fresh. Yeah but i mean that's too. I wouldn't say mortal wounds because you're a sports fan. You know how these things work but those are two two two stab wounds. Definitely working side of andrew gambling absolutely. I will say that my expectations for my teams that that plays a large role in affecting what my mood will be after a horrible loss. Now say the nature the nature of both of those losses. The eagles on monday night. And the north darby for tottenham. They were very similar in that like so one sided and in other years i would say both of those games collectively within a twenty four hour time period would have absolutely ruined me but my expectations for both of those teams are low and so while i found it hard to watch Not in any way. Enjoyable truly disappointing. It didn't it didn't necessarily ruined me the way it would have in another year where my expectations were different. Does that make sense. Yeah it makes sense and also again. I'm not a. I'm not trying to be glib her or funny here. While it may be. I am but you are a realist. I wouldn't call you a pessimist. You are realist. You do enjoy your life but you know even outside the sporting sense you are prepared for the crushing disappointments. That inevitably follow always. That's a good way to be. I think i sometimes. Yeah i guess so. This was probably one of those times like if you if you think. Your team isn't very good but you're still going to like put your fist wall. After you get be bad by arrival like you keep go through. It's hard to go through life that way at you have to end. What your expectations and with your mood after horrible defeats and so much of that these days. What funds doing those things when they're teams are already bad like putting like if the cleveland browns fan i we know the browns are better known than they have been longtime. But if there's a cleveland browns fan. Who's putting his fist through. Trudeau drywall in his home. We know that's performance. You know a lot of this is performance. There are fans who are psychopathic like that. But a lot of it is just you know because it's sharable because you can put it out there Which is also theme. I think we'll get to in this podcast. But but enough i digress. I'm wasting time. There is football from the weekend. Be talked about football. Most take precedent. Yeah so much of it. We're gonna talk with danny higginbotham later in the show. We loved speaking with him during our epl preview podcasts. And so we're just We thought we got to do it again. And so sure enough. He'll be back a little bit later on in the program on. He's great man. I'm very excited to to do that before we get to him though jay so you you wanted to do something today. The game gap between the two ties was so long that i thought they'd just given up on plan this round. They're just decided that can't be bothered. Forget as was what was it. Lots of them happened on if you're matched united support or none of them were good. No unless you're one of those supporters rooting for rinaldo to have great stats. I don't know it's interesting that you say that because we know renaldo is a kind of a team of its own. He's got his own stands on twitter and social media. So there's probably people who are only delighted about that on the game is tangential. But we're we're talking to real football people here. Andrew of course to one in just the most thrilling fashion young boys pulling off the massive upset of manchester united. After going down a goal early. And i gotta say. "Caught offside with andrew gumming then. Jj davani o. Yes caught side from the upper west side manhattan from an apartment in brooklyn new york. Andrew gun ling. Jj davani transfer deadline day. What's up brother. I feel as if you're oh yes intro. As iconic as it is is not as dramatic assay skysports transfer deadline day or else on gaito with their With their rather over the top countdown. We maybe next year we need to do something. Very very dark and dramatic for transfer deadline. Day like a a brian. Fontana panda watch yet. Something like that but you sat in a chair in the dark with just your silhouette you know rubbing your hands together with kind of knock glee not excitement. Not but some kind of menace. Why is that the emotion that we're trying to evoke from transfer deadline. Because it's dry it's ramped up to such a point that You know. Miguel delaney tweeted this out. He said what happens to the people. Now who seoul obsession on twitter and social media and possibly life is trance. I what happens when the window shots for them. This is their christmas andrew. So you're right and this is a thing. This is a relatively new trend. It is not exclusive to soccer. It is very much a part of american sports as well. And i wonder what's behind that. If it's like fantasy sports crazed just the idea of roster building in general like for us. Maybe people are obsessed with it. Because like i can't really relate to messier rinaldo like what they do i. It just doesn't even make sense to me. Like i can never do the things they do. But i think deep down inside all of us believe that we could in some way build a roster. We all in some way. Be the general manager. Oh you've our favorite team and so maybe that's why people have gravitated towards that because they almost feel like it's more relatable to try and build a team than it is to play a sport. Oh sure and strangely. You know you said you'd see tweets which i find particularly grim you know about clubs outgoings. They sold this guy for x. Amount brought in this guy and they'll be like that's how you run a club that's how you run a business and i'm like the joy you're getting from. This is far too much. Sh you know the joy should be derived from whatever player you signed and their contribution on the field not not spreadsheets not stats and figures. And things. Like that. And they can be interesting. I we enjoy regularly. Delving into the world of swiss ramble. Who gives us the breakdown clubs amortization all those things they could you know they they can be interesting but For some people this is the sport. Well the thing that i find particularly ridiculous about this is that you know you fully know that there are people who lose their minds and live and die with the signing or not signing of a player that they have literally never watched play. And i find that funny We all remember andrei arshavin being announced finally at our snow on part of that huge sense of joy that arshavin signed for our snow was based on Okay some good performances in european competition. That were televised. But don't tell me that arsenal fans were watching him regularly. Because they weren't but the other side of it was tottenham didn't get him. There was a point in that transfer saigo not saga however long hours. Were after him. That to northland clubs. Were in the chase for andrei arshavin. So a lot of it. Too is one-upmanship You know united finds look at sancho veron christiano renaldo and they'll be goading liverpool fans and even possibly manchester city fans to about this. You're right in some ways. It's almost like a status thing. Like look it all these guys that want to be a part of of our club not yours. And there's a dopamine hedge from the transfer there's a dopamine hedge from the likes and re tweets when you make a smart comments are are you say how you wanted to transfer window on twitter or instagram. so it's all that It's it's part of it's part of modern phantom it's very grim and but has been building for years and years. I mean it was it was so it was such an event and a thing At sky and and still is not quite what it used to be. You know andrew. This sent their reporters to grounds only to be surrounded by insane people especially the winter transfer window in all kinds of awful weather. You know trying to get on. Tv holding up signs in some cases holding up phallic symbols and inserting them into the year of one sky. Presenter i i to the point where sky. You have to stop doing that. And go inside the grounds or somewhere where the fans worked It is quite a scene We'll go through it. We will be part of the problem for today at least and we will talk about some of some of the key moves from deadline day. Maybe some of the clubs that we feel have had particularly good or bad. Transfer windows also. Jj because we have played three matches in the primarily. You know what today is my friend. What day is that. Jump to conclusions day. We need to drop. Oh you have caught me off. Guard and I don't really know what to say in a moment like this other than i'm sorry you don't have it know what andrew. You can't not have the jump conclusions. Drop oh you're oh no no. No i thought you meant the boeing. Sound no no boeing. I'm not don't worry. Jj act not only. Do i have what you're looking for. I actually created a whole new open. So i actually don't wanna play. I wanna wait until we get to the real action. Yeah oh what. A pro total tease by the way. Just just the my my my my outpouring of anger there was nothing to do you per se but it's it's it's reflected from from our listeners. Who were annoyed we talked about. The carbo called a couple of weeks ago and didn't carbo carbon noise there. You happy everyone that should make them happy. So we'll do. We'll do our after the third week of the per leagues each year. We do i think we do. Mls too we do our jump to conclusions. We podcast where we make. Kind of grand proclamations outrageous statements after just three matches and then we determine whether or not we are actually willing to jump to that conclusion. So we'll do that. You have put together a mail bag. Which i did look at. I really enjoyed I'm excited about that one. God you glad you went to the trouble to do your job. Yeah i did Because i'm a pro like you said I i did see one of our One of the guys who wrote into us wanted to know kind of where we're at with ted lasso.

As iconic as it is is not as dramatic assay skysports transfer deadline day or else jerem gaito with their With their rather over the top countdown. You know the joy should be derived from whatever player you signed and their contribution on the field not not spreadsheets not stats and figures. And things. Like look it all these guys that want to be a part of of our club not yours and there's a dopamine hitch from the transfer there's a dopamine hedge from the likes and re tweets when you make a smart comments are are you say how you wanted to transfer window on twitter or instagram. So it's all that It's it's part of it's part of modern phantom it's very grim and but has been building for years and years. I mean it was it was so it was such an event and a thing At sky and and still is not quite what it used to be. You know andrew. They sent their reporters to grounds only to be surrounded by insane people especially the winter transfer window in all kinds of awful weather. You know trying to get on. Tv holding up signs in some cases holding up phallic symbols and inserting them into the year of one sky. Presenter i i to the point where sky you have to stop doing that and go inside. The grounds are somewhere where the fans worked It is quite a scene We'll go through it. The carbo called a couple of weeks ago and didn't carbo carbon noise. Happy everyone that should make them happy. So we'll do. We'll do our after. The third week of the primer leagues each year. We do And i think we do for. Mls too we do our jump to conclusions. We podcast where we make. Kind of grand proclamations outrageous statements after just three matches and then we determine whether or not we are actually willing to jump to that conclusion. So we'll do that. You have put together a mail bag. Which i did look at. I really enjoyed. I'm i'm excited about that. One god you glad you went to the trouble to do your job. Yeah i did Because i'm a pro like you said I i did see one of our One of the guys who wrote into us wanted to know kind of where we're at with ted lasso.

Be doing this on your vacation but we. We haven't missed a week. In how many years now Seven and a half. It's incredible wants and not only first off. I will say thank you and second off. I would say you're committed as well because you have just rode out hurricane. Have you not yes it was. It was unbelievable levels of water. I was over on eastern parkway. Not far from where one of the stairs at the close to the museum became a waterfall just in today broken. We'll have waterfalls some incredible flooding down. towards guadalcanal in my neighborhood anyone who knows brooklyn will know that That canal you don't want that thing flooding. You want it to stay where it is. You don't want it rising up It was pretty incredible. I got a got pretty salt but thankfully none of the high dangerous winds. That caused the problems. We did not get any of that. Oh good well. I'm glad to hear. I'm glad to hear you're saying i hope everybody. Listening in the northeast is safe not dealing with water damage or or any of the effects of hurricane honoree. jj yes indeed onery of very Very don't know a perfect name for tropical storm. I think i guess so So we got a lot to get to today here to look back on this weekend. A lot happened. We're gonna talk of course about arsenal and chelsea. I know it seems like you have a something some stuff you wanna talk about with everton and leeds in what was a fun one and then there were scenes in league on and i feel bad kind of only parachuting like we. Don't talk a ton of league on. I feel badges parachuting and when something bad happens but i'm curious by now people have probably seen the events that transpired between niece and marseille. And we're going to talk about it in a little bit. I am extremely curious to see how this will be handled. And i will. I'll talk about why a little bit later on in the podcast. Because this is this could be a detention interesting outcome and I'm on. I'm curious to get your thoughts on it as well. So we've got a lot to do also cristiano. Ronaldo i guess will he be transferred will he not be. Are the rumors legitimate. Are they nonsense. It's it's all very it's very fluid so we'll talk about that. There's a lot to do. Let's get right into it though with the primarily from over the weekend. Jj and the marquee matchup. That took place sunday afternoon. Arsenal and chelsea chelsea continue to look like the defending european champions. That they are and arsenal. Continue to look like the defending eighth place side that they are. Jj what we hope. They looked like an eighth place. I if you're at least arsenal fans do. I'm not so sure. So you're saying on actually creek. Maybe over the top in my praise. I dunno they've lost to newly promoted side A newly promoted side. That didn't even have to play that well to beat them and they've lost the champions in a game. That was pretty much over by thirty minutes or at least felt that way. I think arsenal are in a spot that they have not been in in twenty five years on. It's it's very very strange. We've seen poor our seasons. The last few under vendor okay but this is this feels different. And i think the variable here is that you knew watt arson vendor eventually would. Do you know what there would be some sort of steadying of the ship. I and it always seemed to happen. you know. Their course was corrected. And they kinda stayed in contention are kind of in the top half of the table Least but now we're in unchartered waters because we have a manager who is a rookie manager and we do not know how this is going to play out and he came in for some serious criticism It was it was unbelievable to listen to lee dixon. A doyen of grit arsenal teams. Talk about something. Like how. Poor the are snowed. Press was how everybody wasn't doing their job. I'm wasn't doing what they should be. He was saying how disjointed what he said. All right one person goes to press there then the networks the guy behind his is half-hearted and then someone else's and even trying and this was after twenty minutes of the game and you know a tactic tank and his team to do something as i won't say simple but as basic you know if you're a team that's going to price then everyone has to do with with the same level of enthusiasm with the same you know just know what you're supposed to be doing and if if you can't get them to do that and it's not node. This'll not good at all. And i know. I'm renting here but one more thing. Well the left side of arsenal's defence are the left side of the teen really the way chelsea targeted. Went down. that right site you know not correction from talking about the tyranny side yeah guarantee any site like c. Where he they were overwhelming him because they knew he's going to get forward. He's going to link to play with the former players. A lot of overlords are going to have to happen in that area for arsenal to take attack. Wise and thomas to just said okay right. Well then we're going to overload not say we're going to put balls in behind and create massive problems for you and they did and it was. It was as if our ted and didn't know what to do then just now bleak bleak day for our still. Yeah i i would mostly agree. Now there's a couple of things. If i were not trying to mount a defense for arsenal because i agree with everything you're saying no but this is classic you is. This is what you do we first of all. Don't you dare put this on me. Or one of the great contrarian this world has ever seen all right. But no i'm going to. I will say this on behalf of arsenal fans who are right. Now listen to this and saying all they ever do is just crud on our team. I'm tired of this. Here's what i'll say if we're if we're going to be fair and later full picture for one. I thought that arsenal hit earned a penalty at the end of the first half. If that's given who knows maybe it's a different game. I don't think it is chelsea clearly. Looked like the better team to me. But this is a weird sport and they should have had a penalty. I'll give them that. And i'll say it's not like they generate any chances rob holding probably should have scored on a header from a corner kick in the second half No near post got to it in time just missed it. So i'll say that. Now the reason i don't wanna go too deep on defending them in in those ways in terms of chances created is because the arsenal that you're talking about that we're used to under vendor.

"Caught offside with edry. Gummy and jj davani. Oh yes offside pro-peace suburbs of new york city in brooklyn new york and godly jacob. Any what's up. rather how are you doing man doing. Well good well loved the opening weekend of the league. A lot of people did it was generally met with the there was some quibbles. I heard few quibbles generally was a big thumbs up. Yeah i really truly believe that. Like we all knew this all throughout and you and i harped on it extensively in our preview podcast but i think seeing it at the euro's seeing it now in the primarily having fans back is just. It's just a game changer. I feel like a broken record saying this but like it. Just is i really. I really honestly believe. I'm not trying to be hokey or corny or anything like that. I really believe that like enthusiasm. Joy like those are all contagious feelings and so like when you see a goal scored and then the camera pans to the limbs just like bouncing wildly behind a goal and people hugging and like. That's contagious like you're not there but you feel that those emotions through the tv set and it just like. I can't help it alter your mood while watching a game it just it just it changes the whole feel of it. You're so right. And i can't remember who the grit philosopher was or. Maybe it was just one of those instagram philosophers. But i you know one of those memes like live laugh love and then they'll have like something from kheirkhah guard right beside it but i'm enthusiasm is such a big thing but like andrew. We talked about last season and a feeling that. Oh my god. It was a drudgery of games on front of empty stadiums and we couldn't find the meaning in it but you give meaning to something and fans give meaning to football. I'm convinced of it. Yeah i believe that to be true as well like. I remember watching you know. Even less. When they went to the bubble it was. I will always say what they did to put that together. Have it go off relatively speaking without a hitch. I know that you know teams could not all the teams. The league was represented. But like you know having everyone. They're playing at a tournament in those conditions. It was an amazing job by the league but like there was something so sterile about it. That like you in watching it. You can never quite removed from your head that like the greater context of what was going on in the world. Yeah and that's why. But that's why andrew the best thing about that Mls is backed tournament which we will soon forget. It will recede into the back of our minds. The best thing about it was often that you could hear the shouts of the managers that espn and mike dope the managers on the sidelines on the coaches and the players. So you got that day. Were giving the enthusiasm that you talked about. They were giving the meaning But now we've got like absolute you know psychopath who live and breathe the game and go every weekend and there in the stadium and they are just letting it all out on on the first weekend from brentford arsenal right. The way through it was just this energy. This was felt right and it looked good on jam. And you know what may be excited to do this podcast. Because there were podcasts towards the end of last season where you just felt like we are taken off games here until we get out of this autre autre sterile pointless and often you know it was none of it was pointless in the sense that there were points. Know for play there. There was european spots and there was this dot. But you know it was just drudgery and bis. This weekend was the exact opposite excited to talk about. Yeah absolutely it. All just felt different One other note on the fans Because all of it for the most part it was all great. Like we're saying right now but there were like we saw this when fans returned during the nba playoffs. People lost their minds. It was like they forgot how to behave. In these situations. We saw it a little bit at the european championship. At wembley people just kind of forgot. What like acceptable behavior is like being overly excited for an event is not an excuse to lose your mind and sure enough Prior to manchester united leeds off. We saw once again. That people kind of forgot about like acceptable behavior as some of the videos that came from that were pretty. Were pretty rough and it was funny. Jj because i have you watched the movie. The trial chicago seven. I have not watched it yet even though you keep telling me to watch it. So it's excellent. I highly recommend it. It's on netflix. Next it's phenomenal but like it's all about the the riots at the democratic national convention In the sixties and like there's one scene where they're talking about how inside this bar there's a bar and it's very high society and like people aren't even paying attention what's going on outside of the window and on the other side of that window. The police are about to like just go at this group of protesters and like they keep talking about how it's sixties outside the bar fifties inside the book and i felt like i watched the movie. I've seen it a couple of times. But i watched it the night before and then i was watching manchester united leads the next day and like there's video being shot from inside like starbucks or something. It's like people just like having coffee. It's quiet and then like you look outside the window. And there's forty people dislike killing each other in the streets over a soccer game. And i was just like this is like the movie last night. This is you know. Twenty twenty one inside the bar. Nineteen eighties outside. The bar of just like hardcore hooliganism. It was just. I don't know if you see that video that talking about if somebody from inside this little coffeehouse like take outside of people smashing each other up shares mailboxes or whatever it was. I did but like you know this is. This is twenty twenty one years of of of legion. i'd being out of the primarily. I'm not blaming leads by the way but you know matching leads. Fans going out had has been happening For a long long time and it gets ugly and it was apparently was pretty. Oh getting the city to not in terms of physical violence but in terms of some of the chance that were being saying.

"Caught offside with andrew. Gummy and jj davani yet bought off burbs of new york city from the emerald isle ireland andrew. Going and j. j. and vani what's up brother. Hey man how. how're you doing. Well more importantly how are you. How's uh life in the homeland. Life homeland is great. Andrew eight. Say it's an interesting home life They've just mown the grass beside miester that fresh smell of grass in the air and also. It's it's notable for another reason. It's a europa europa europa conference league of extraordinary. Gentlemen evening in slagle But there's only four hundred fans allowed. And i shall not be one of them but temps rovers with with a big night in europe against so. There's a little bit of a buzz around albeit not as beta buzzed. Because not that many people can go to the game. I realize lago was in this competition we could we wind up with a a caught offside cup of a brand new kind. Were smuggled trail one nil from the first leg Boss the home leg they played. They played very well in the in the first leg. So and they'll have their wounded kin. Johnny kenny back to play tonight. So maybe rovers progress on its leg rovers versus tottenham for the first time since a tottenham preseason tour in nineteen ninety-one one. I am so horribly cursed in our caught offside cup match ups that i am thoroughly convinced you would smash us absolutely take us apart. That would be my expectation. Yeah maybe that's a possibility. Let's see this should be a really fun. Podcast that we have coming up for you today. There's a couple big stories in the news. obviously that we're going to get to leonov messy First and foremost talk a little bit about the gold cup. I know the the match against haiti is kind of news and match against martinique is taking place later today. Depending on when you're listening to this kind of in terms of the us men were kind of recording a bit of an awkward moment but we will still talk a little bit about them. Some first impressions from this team in haiti match and jj of course the part of this that. I'm probably most excited for. Today is We've all had time to breathe after that. Exhilarating final on sunday at the euros between england and italy. We've kind of allowed our thoughts to settle and we'll go through some of our final takeaways from what was a really truly fun month of soccer in europe So we'll get some final takeaways on on what went down throughout the continent but We start jj with the big story from the last couple of days. And the will he or won't he of the past year or so has now been confirmed. He will lionel messi returning to barcelona. Not just returning there. But we're doing so on a five year deal. The financial terms have not yet been disclosed. But everybody is reporting. That is a significant pay reduction which was always going to have to be the case given barcelona's unbelievable debt and given the fact that Malaita was not even let them submit their roster or submit all their additions to their roster a guero dot is still need. They still need to trim fat. And so let's get right into it. First of all the messy angle of this. So i i will say jj when we. I remember the report happening during the pandemic and doing i don't know if it was an emergency podcast. Or what but we you know we got together and did a whole thing on messy demanding to leave barcelona that it was over and i do remember us kind of approaching it with a measured tone. Sort of a okay. Let's let's allow cooler heads to prevail here and see. Let's not jump to wild conclusions. It was certainly possible that it was the end. I believed messy in that he wanted to go But boy the the fabric of his life and career is so interwoven in that club. It just seemed hard to untangle all those threads and in the end. A presidential election took place for the club that he was almost the signature issue and with laporta. Winning like we always said about for laporta was vote for messy and that kind of wound up being the case here. Yeah from the messy side of things. I don't think this is really a surprise. And you know. I've been thinking about what simon cooper said last summer during all the drama where we thought. That's it he's gone. He's had enough of everything as essential as he's being to barcelona for fifteen twenty years. This isn't a one way street like i. I wanna forget the football just for a moment and think about Because simon cooper did a deep dive on them for a book that we hope to have a simon on to talk about. But you know. Forget the love of of barcelona which he clearly has forget the football side of things for a second. He loves living in barcelona and he loves his house and his neighborhood and the relatively considering his status as the world's most famous athlete the relative privacy of his existence. And if you think that they're only three possible top level destinations for him outside of barsa so london paris or manchester if he went to either one of any of those all those home comforts disappear if he moves and i. I suppose he's kind of know you know he's had a weight. Lifted off on the international scene and he can do what he tried to do in twenty eighteen which was focus all the attention on barcelona winning what they need to win. And you know. I suppose if you if you put those angles together. This this makes sense for from his perspective Yeah i think so. And i think there's something to the allure of him ending his career as a one club man with lona. I think there is something important about that kind of four for whatever this matter somebody with for his brand not to cut across you know lino. He will consider himself a one club man he moves to. Mls that's you know. He didn't consider himself that but he wouldn't be. He he would be really will be. That would move to. Mls at the stage in his career at which he'd be out would be a a lifestyle move. Let's not let's not kid ourselves here. The exact reason that. I don't consider stephen girard a one club man. I absolutely consider well. You'd be wrong okay. with regards to messy in the situation like we said barcelona. This is not this is can we. Can we talk about what this means for them on the field like obviously having the on your team is his massive be obvious statement of the century and with him. You know they immediately not become remain a title contender both in europe and of course domestically but there there have been conversations about okay. What is actually best for this club now like we said i'm seeing now. Jj at sky sports and some other places that it's a fifty percent pay reduction that messy is going to be taking still an incredible sum of money that he'll be pocketing because what he was making before was bonkers makes sense given his talent what he means to the club but it was still insane so they still are going to have to make a lot of moves and get rid of players that are seemingly valuable to them You know there's there's been a lot of talk about a potential swap with antoine. Going back to let it madrid and soul potentially going to barcelona which i think you know wouldn't be such a terrible thing but again barscelona are gonna have to make some changes and reduce their wage structure significantly given the fact that last season they finished third that they didn't advance nearly as far as they would have liked to in europe. Are barcelona moving forward or is this you know great as messy is are they kind of just in a in a moment of plateau here. I think your moment to plateau is is a good point. I think from their standpoint in a financial crisis they have managed to keep their their crown jewel. It's a short term winge however this is the virus loaner that no longer can expect to win in with messy can't dominate domestically with them. And so it's hard not to feel that this contract might might stifle the painful rebuilding process. That has to begin at some point. Nope you you you said there about you know. It's a significant pay reduction. It's still a lot of money signing marsden of espn has tweeted this. Some reports say will be fifty percent caught if that was true including the image rights contract. His new deal would be worth thirty six million euros gross still about almost fifty million dollars excluding the image rights deal more like thirty million euros. That's ignoring bonuses. However sources have indicated that messy will be paid more and twenty two twenty three then this twenty one twenty two and it's not simply an x. Percent caught it staggered to help barcelona now buying them time to get their house in order next year regardless more cuts donated to register this deal and how however much it is still a lot of money post contracts straightforward etc..
