"Traditional right And now this woman is talking 400 years of oppression for yo yo asiatic black men Hold it It gets better Let's go to the Harvard of the south in North Carolina at duke university By the way in duke in the final four they play North Carolina Hey typical each North Carolina schools I actually like Jimmy vaccaro and he was alive The wolfpack Yeah wolf pack North Carolina state a Nancy with Ptolemy the other day she wanted to go to North Carolina state and I said to her what was that four years ago Because by the looks of it you're like what 28 29 The accused me of snatching from the cradle But who knows He probably doesn't even know about Vayner Wait a second Why am I saying porcaro wasn't a Jimmy valvano Who was originally from iona college and then went over to the wolfpack became the coachman unfortunately passed away from throat cancer Am I right on that Am I right on that One 808 four 8 9 two two two that's one 800 E four AWA BC But what do you say In the shadow of the coach you learned on the Bobby Knight At the West Point who is that coach And try to pronounce his name And at what ethnic group is the coach of duke And the reason I mention this is I have a feeling that the coach of duke and the final four would never ever have said what this duke professor said in relationship to Chris Rock Will Smith And Jada Smith Here he is Mark Anthony Neal Wow Three names Like he told you never trusted anyone with two first names or with three names Two first names in the three names Could I hear Mark Anthony Neil professor Duke university But I think in this instance the expectation that black men show up is not something in which we resort to violence I think like ESA suggested we saw a man who was unhinged in that moment and the only thing that seemed to be in his toolbox to respond to that moment was an act of violence What the hell is he talking about I was in Penn station tonight All kinds of emotionally disturbed all kinds of homeless Why was with the guardian angels We were hunting for hatchet man A black guy supposedly from Newark who took a hatchet to another homeless person What does that say about him I wonder if what professor Isa not tarry the nubian princess or the duke professor Mark Anthony Neal would have said about that Yeah he's insane in the brain He took a hatchet to another black man he needs to be put into a mental healthcare facility and then transferred to the psychiatric hospital for the criminally insane and I know exactly where he can go right there and Randall's island Kirby psychiatric I don't think that would jive with what these two professors said No and in fact the duke professor wanted to wanted to even get further into this nonsense Play it is he play it But I also don't want to erase the violence that was enacted by Chris Rock in that moment In his critique or joke of Jada Pinkett Smith and extension of a broader critique of black women you know is it ever a comfortable space to make fond of the kind of chronic diseases that black women are suffering right So in that regard I absolutely agree with ESA that we're seeing a continuation of almost the spectacle of black pain You know broadcast to millions and millions of people Each gotta be kidding No no Back comes the professor from hunter college the nubian princess professor Aisha Who talked about black pain that triggered this Did you know that ladies and gentlemen Black pain Talk about black pain as it relates to Jada Pinkett Smith in this moment And to black women was Chris Rock's joke about her shaved head did it go beyond an insensitivity to her medical condition alopecia but did it also hit at issues surrounding black beauty Black beauty Is there anyone out there who wouldn't suggest that Jada Pinkett Smith I never trusted anybody with three names It's a beautiful African American Queen Of course she is With hair without hair she's gorgeous A little bit on the oldest side Like mommy dearest I really think that her two kids in the future Since they expound and are exponents of expressing themselves at a very young age will probably end up writing a book Volume two mommy dearest about Jada Pinkett Smith I have a feeling yes Anyway I know it's one 808 four 8 9 two two two 808 four 8 WABC Let's go if we can to Walter who's calling from Long Island your turn to be heard he had WABC Walter "Down one to go. And so last Tuesday night, I watched the episode knowing that that was the day final cuts we're going to be made, so I had to watch it a little bit with a jaundiced eye, but nonetheless the same Take away I've had since week one about head coach Mike McCarthy. You look up clunky in the dictionary and you see his picture. He's inarticulate and he's got this. It's the same speech at halftime. It's the Sanchez. Let's win. Let's win. Let's win this game, you know. The most successful leaders, most successful coaches that I've observed, they understand this about winning in any sport or in life. It's a process oriented endeavor. It's not a situation where you focus on the outcome. You focus on the process the leads to the outcome. That's what Nick Saban does. That's what John Wooden did. That's what urban Meyer did. And three colleges. That's what all he agreed or did at Cal State Fullerton, the greatest college baseball coach of all time. But Mike McCarthy is Mike McCarthy. And I don't expect him to change and he did win a Super Bowl. So what do I know? All right, in the fourth episode of each view is hard knocks well again. It came the night of the roster cut down to 53. I I waited till the end of watching, but my fears were three guys. I was rooting for. Well spoiler alert. They all ended up getting cut. But these were some of the highlights of Of hard knocks last week. These are some thoughts again. I I pick on the show, but I enjoy and I watch it. This hasn't been the most compelling I would say episode or, you know iteration of hard knocks because The Cowboys just aren't that interesting to me In terms of personalities? I don't hold that against him. Still an iconic franchise. It's just that they don't have, like, you know, the Jimmy Valvano type characters. I get such a kick out of Covid reared its ugly head that forced the team in the virtual meetings again. I get a kick out of John Fossil, the son of the great Jim Fossil arrested Soul who was a great NFL coach. He lived here in Vegas. They knew him. He's a terrific guy, and he was I who couldn't relate to his Dissertation that Covid is for the birds. But the players were able to return to the star after a couple of days and But their defensive coordinator, Dan Quinn, was still in protocol. And so a guy by the name of Jowitt stepped in. And, um he has his own coaching style, which to me, didn't throw me once again, one of the serious favorites. The gentleman from Mexico. His name is Isaac Alarcon not to be confused with Isaac Long crime who's a star here at Fox Sports Radio and Isaac Alicante, trying to be a star with the Cowboys at the Star. And the irony was, is he even though he acknowledges he's from Mexico, which is extremely hot there during the summer, he was literally feeling the heat, figured everything in the heat and that Dallas son was just beating down on them, and it was obvious. That with cuts looming, um he knew that he had to have a good day. He knew he was on the bubble, but the heat was getting the best of them. It was something that I just I really felt for the young man. I felt like he was almost admitting that he knew. He wasn't going to be able to limp across the finish line and spoiler alert. He did end up getting cut. Then the camera shifted the Jiuquan Hardy, the running back who had the issue with the, uh, the contact lenses you remember and all that that he had glasses and he had other issues. And then he finally settled into better contact lenses, and he has been fighting for a spot and he kind of caught a break. It's one of those, you know situations. He was behind a running back named Rico Dowdell on the depth chart, but it turns out Donald, you know had an injury hip injury. It was sent into the sent him to the I. Honestly, you won't see be seeing Rico suave via Rico doubt at any time. The hearing the Cowboys. It's ashamed to have that happen to the young man. But what that did was open the door for Jaquan Hardy and the running backs coach Pete told him. No uncertain terms. Here's what you got in front of you, man. Right? And then they went into Dequan Hardy a little bit and he's just like you and I, he went out, he found, uh, restaurant there and Dallas or Frisco that that made his favorite Southern food and he was sitting there like we can all relate to that. You go. You're looking forward to a meal. You go sit down, and then you know you're waiting and waiting, and he starving and they put the tray in front of He's got a big smile on his face. Again. That was actually very relatable. This guy became very likable, right and he was eating his, uh, his is I think it was some kind of fried chicken or maybe gizzards. And then there's some kind of mash up of Mac and cheese and yams and Yeah, It was a human moment that I thought that hard knocks crew did a good job of giving you a glimpse behind these people. Yeah, the National Football League wannabes or players there, guys. That are trying to do something with her life there. Human beings will I found myself rooting for Jaquan Hardy. He had an okay game. They show that you know it caught a couple passes in the flat, had a couple runs. He didn't make the team. Michael Parsons again. He stepped in and you know there's a stud waiting to happen, Uh, great player out of Penn State First round draft choice. Another lover of Southern cuisine, he had the teammates over to his house. And then and then he had a little game of Connect four and he's better and connect for that. He is a chest so if that excites you, God bless you didn't excite me. I thought that was kind of stupid. And one of the things that they've really not done a lot. In this hard knocks his talk a lot about veterans, right? But they did show a bit of a rivalry between the mark Kewpie in Trayvon digs and the kind of one on one battles are going in camp. True, you know, Diggs is a is a defensive back. Tough player. Mark Cooper's a brilliant receiver, and Dak Prescott was kind of tagging them on. And it was it showed. You kind of took you behind the scenes to show how intense competition can be, even for guys who've already made the team. I mean, these are world class athletes, right and then Dak Prescott weighed in again and who knew he was silver bowls. He started talking about corn hole in the meeting and the long and short of it is, And then he got finally back to full participation in practice and again, you were reminded of why people like Dak Prescott so much There's something unexpected came out of left field. Player by the name of Tarell Basham, who is a stand up. Want to be Canadian? Took the mic at a comedy club, All right. I don't know, man. If this is his post career path, I don't have high hopes, but he did manage to make his teammates laugh. He did a rendition of his routine in a meeting as well. And he told something story about going to a restaurant with somebody. You don't have a restaurant..

Ron bucks and good to have you with us for this hour of america's sports talk show. We're talking basketball this hour and we're going talk with the guy that is in the basketball hall of fame but i will teach you a little bit and tell you. He's in the basketball hall of fame but he did not play the game. Ross going to be talking basketball with a guy that did play professional basketball for twelve seasons in ncwa championship as well at the outset. Here let me take a moment to say thank you. I say that because back in nineteen eighty-eight when we launched the network with just some twelve stations across the country. I wasn't quite sure whether a national sports talk radio network would work but many years later. Now i can kind of smile about it and tell you in all the years. I've been in broadcasting. This has been the greatest experience that i've ever had walking through the door every night being able to sit down and talk to great athletes provide moments and opportunities for you fans out there to talk to the athletes as well. It has been a wonderful thing for all of you. That over the years is have either run into me or emailed me or called me and said how much they've enjoyed the show. Because i've tried to make this like a nightline of sports. Someone said to me you know. You're like rose when it comes to sports. Well that's a great honor. Because i think. Charlie rose is a great interviewer and what i've tried to do. The years is kind of bring out in athletes. The human side. Because i've always felt that the fans the listeners out there they can better relate to the human side of athletes and then they can the professional side. I can't hit a ninety. Five mile hour fastball. And most people out there can as well. But i think they can always relate to the thing that is human about athletes throw. Bailey is standing by to kick things off. He played in the nba for twelve seasons with the utah jazz. And the minnesota timberwolves. He also played internationally in greece and italy was taken in the first round and he came out of college at north carolina state where he played his college ball during jimmy valvano tenure as the head coach and he was the leader of the double a championship team back in nineteen eighty three that upset the university of houston that year. He led the wolfpack in both scoring and rebounding and he is a good guy. And then hank nichols a member of the basketball hall of fame and he didn't play but he served as the ncw national officiating coordinator for twenty years and he also referee in the atlantic ten in the acc and other conferences. And he has officiated a record six. Nc double a men's basketball championship games. Good to have you with us. We're ready to crank it up here on.

"Back. Anything is possible. I'm Jack Russell over with Richard Digger Phelps Digger. Let's go back January 19th 1974 The Irish are playing John Wooden's U C L A. They'd want 88 straight. What happened? Well, it's an interesting matchup. Of course. John wouldn't coach that South ventral South Bend Central High School back one after he graduated from Purdue, and he played pro for a couple of years. He ends up coaching in South Bend Central before then he went to Indiana State. And of course, that you sell a Bill Walton was probably the best player and you sell these program after Luau Sender or Jabbar's expelled today. But what was interesting that game as we're getting ready to play that we had going to be number two in the country. They remember one preseason in the street was up the 88. Well, what was amazing that week during practice before the game. We used to get together after practice, and this was on Wednesday before the game on Saturday, and John Shu Mai was the co captain, and Gary Novak was a co captain. And I made him both get together and a half court. We get together. Put her hands in the circle. My ideal number one. They don't you have another dame? Well, before we did that, I said, shoot, Goose. No. There you guys outside. Get your six players on each side in organized how you're gonna practice cutting down the Nets now for Saturday's game Saturday, Like looking at me, I said you do hear what I said. Said, organized and let's all go down and organized. How you're gonna organize to get these guys won't cut down the Nets. So no backs down here with these guys in one basket and kind of a guy named Tom Hanson was walking on the baseball player. He's up there. He's ready to cut. Then that's where the Sensei said, no. Don't cut them that today we needed for Saturday. But I wanted to get in their heads. Hey, we gotta practice cutting down the nets. Because we're gonna win Saturday. We gotta cut down the nets. So next thing you know, the game starts were down 16 the first half Anytime you're down, double figures in the first time by half time you want to get it tonight. They have a moment. Um, swing. Well, we did that. But you sell I with some three minutes and 22 seconds ago. They've got an 11 point lead and I called time out, and I looked all five players on the floor, dice Martin Gary broke our John Xiu Mei, Adrian Dantley and Dwight Plan and look at each guy and use a few French words. That if you're not ready to play, go take a shot right now among you down here because we're gonna win this game. What we come out of the time out. Where is our ball underneath our basket? We ran a play to shoot. May he stills gets it scores. And then he steals the inbounds pass to Bill Walton and scores. They've been Danley steals the pass down on the defensive end on the sideline. He score now they Mrs shot. They come down. Gary broke off. It's a shot in the left wing. Okay, Here we go. A straight points. They have a turnout. They come down. We go to broke on the left wing again. He shoots again over Keith Wells makes it now It's 10. Straight points. Next thing you know, they miss a shot. We get the rebound. And Brokaw's got the bomb Left wing and Tommy Curtis was guarding Dwight Plane leaves Curtis to go double team Would Wilkes on Broke Off Well is Gerry's dribbling across the lane. He seized white clay, who was known as the Ice Man because the year before as a sophomore, he hit the winning shot against Al McGuire's team, the end and 81 game winning streak at the Mecca in Milwaukee. He sees the ice man open, throws it to Clay. He hits the shot were up one. We held them scoreless. The last 20 seconds of the game. To me, gets the rebound frozen up in the air, and we end that streak at 88, Bill Walton and John Wooden and we go on to become number one in the country. Um, you and Gary Williams are the only college coaches that Had the most upsets over the number one team seven. It 20 years. 21 years you coached college basketball? What's the biggest thing you learned? Biggest thing I learned is in 21 years, there's a coach. All my players have graduated and then go on to be successful to gain in life, because what I also taught them outside of basketball is what do you got to do with life after basketball? Taught leadership in leadership had nothing to do with the game itself. It was give me somebody that's creative. Somebody has the right risk taker, somebody that has The right sense of survival, and that is leadership and all my guys went on to become successful leaders and the game of life after basketball like stock pattern is President Chicago Speedway. A guy named um Would say when I look at Mike Mitchell. He was a kid from California who as a south more tours Nia and he was a freshman in 79. And his junior year, he cares the same knee up on the other side. Well, he ends up graduating with a 2.5 in the school of business, but because those characteristics of leadership He became president, president of Nepalese US A beverage. So what it was to me was to get these guys to degrees, which father has broken Father Joyce while we do, but also teach them how to be successful after the game of basketball to go on, be successful in the game of life, and we did that in those 21 years, including the 14 year and 20 years of Notre Dame. Another 20 year chapter from 93 to 2014. You were a college basketball studio and game analyst. And for a number of years you carried a bald guy, One eyed guy named Dick Vie. Tell Alice about Dick vital. What if I tell? Of course, he was a high school coach in New Jersey. And then he became an assistant and Rutgers. And then coach at the University of Detroit. We'll know when the ESPN started. I'm really like 78 79. He became the first analyst to be a part of doing basketball college basketball. And he's the guy who made it for all of us, because what I think by town there is no yes, me and there is no college basketball being one of this that and he's just a great person and obviously with the Jimmy V Foundation when Jimmy Valvano died He started everything to do fundraising. What she's rain Mark Kind millions.

John Shu Mai Adrian Dantley Gary Novak Jimmy Valvano Dwight Plane John Xiu Mei Tom Hanson Gary Williams Tommy Curtis New Jersey John Wooden Bill Walton Curtis Mike Mitchell Jack Russell Wednesday 20 years California Dwight Plan January 19th 1974

"Win a game. As i said put it in overtime but it was a significant shot. The first of its kind of going to say ask my second one. Third one third one is about a coach. This is a meme rates. A series of things that somebody did. Like sky clocks like creams skyhook. A singular event camping in early nineteen eighty nine time. I was in college just graduated from college. It was march which is of course. The marshall march madness time. Everybody wants to watch basketball and guys were living at the time. We were the same way. We were watching basketball. During march like everybody else. Now there's some buzzer beater. Win a game. So i'm talking about Nc state north carolina state is playing and jimmy valve is your coach and he was Four personality wonderful person to listen to talk and being perspective coach time. I wanted to hear everything he had to say. Because i felt like. I could learn from great coaches john. Wooden jimmy valvano just to name to basketball coaches. That had a lot to teach a person who is gonna coach in any championship game. Nineteen eighty three. I believe early eighties. Anyway and the game is won on. Buzzer beater is the ugliest buzzer beater. Ever not the pretty shop for sure so kids from north carolina state aches shot. It may be shy. There's still some argument whether he was shooting or passing. I don't really know what he put the ball up against Always houston yeah. So north carolina state. They're huge underdog in the pilot game. Houston's iconic you guys our economy. We were vice slamma jamma. There were like the bomb early eighties houston university in basketball and nc state was definitely the underdog for the game tied. Fifty to fifty to the north carolina state guy throws a brick now. Was it a pass or shot. Dead debate goes on the way short. However renzo charles teammate. He sees the ball coming down. And i think he has presence of mind to know that. Ball's short so he goes up and he gets it in mid air just before any defender realizes what's going on. I think most people are kind of backing off waiting for rebound with the wasn't gonna be one. Lorenzo charles gets up in the air. Catch his in dunks it right. They're all in one spell swoop one second left and that is kind of the question was shot wasn't a pass was a alleyoop pass. Nobody's really said definitively. That didn't matter north carolina. State lindsey game. Now that's a good moment in itself but for me the best moment was the part of the year celebration. That erupted from the wolfpack bench. As soon as that happened. Coach jim valvano. All kinds of personality loved his players. He was great in the press conference. Pregame postgame was fantastic. Listen to. He's caught on camera running down the court desperately looking for someone to celebrate with. He makes a beeline for the nearest player. But before he gets there. That player gets mugged by another player near huggins. So he veers to the side heads for another guy seems to be standing by herself and other. Maybe it was a coach or another player team person. But before he gets there that guy's getting starts getting hugged and mobbed by somebody else so he veers off in another direction in a series of those kinds of things went on for a while to leave. Valley found somebody to celebrate and it was just it was funny to watch and you almost felt sorry for him and but it was just a matter of bad timing and it was just the circumstances but it was jim galvano running down the court looking for somebody to hug and not being able to find. The name made a funny video about it was really funny. And you know what the power of the moment i think was magnified some less than ten years later really. When coach v died after a battle with cancer and showed that picture quite a bit then almost ten years later. It was even more sad. Jim vinyl looking for what was wants funny and comical became tennis sad. So that's my third. Great sports moment related to basketball. All right. here's my number one. Greatest moment in memories of basketball sporting moments. None of you thought of this it is nineteen seventy-two. I'm going with the olympic men's basketball final. I know if you know what that means. He didn't think of it. It was a great moment is a losing moment for you. A significant losing moment. But i think i took it as teachable moment and in all fairness it was a significant moment. Just not for my country. That i live in. There was a significant moment for most of the world. Large portions the world. Anyway let me give you the background. This is one of the most dramatic events in olympic history. Basketball at the time was strictly damage of team. Usa thin now like now crashes play was all amateur and at the time that would've meant college players so is mostly college players. This particular team was coached by a college coach. Hank ibew he may know that name and so's college coach college players all amateurs. The united states had dominated basketball as you would expect since it started in olympic play in nineteen. Thirty six olympics was first time that they played basketball in the us. In one emory previous gold medal in fact had never lost the game so he come in one thousand nine hundred seventy two olympics at munich which that's another whole story maybe another day but for now we can talk about base basketball and try to stay positive so it's munich nineteen seventy-two us in soviet union wasn't russian then then it was the soviet union and convincingly won the first eight games so both teams undefeated tournament a us undefeated in the history of big basketball in the soviet union completely dominated up to that point that year. That team had an overall pick gregor going in his championship game. Sixty three and now as i said the olympic strictly prohibited any involvement of professional athletes. Everybody had to be an amateur so the way the soviet union other.

"All right my second one also nba. This is jerry west. Jerry west hit a sixty foot buzzer beater in one thousand nine hundred seventy finals game. At that point. I was in grade school now. My dad was a high school basketball coach so i would go to practices and during the winter. Two people he hung out with were also basketball. Coaches very collegial. These coaches were at the time. So i heard a lot of basketball talk from the grownups and my dad would Frequently lament what was going on in basketball and celebrate. Successes and complain about things weren't successful. Vividly remember in one thousand nine hundred seventy here west hitting his buzzer beater. Was a big deal to those coaches now back then. The three point shot did not exist if the would have existed. Think this might be clear number one in all the nba finals history. But it was just a two point basket so wasn't any better than the other fat at the buzzer was about to go dead nyc think it must have been because it was two point matter where he shot from people in take the long shots very often. It wasn't wasn't really advantage shooting a ball sixty feet. If you had time anyway you could pass it in and out of court and easier shot. Have a better chance of scoring the two points that you needed to score. I think In the sixties and seventies defense and dribbling and pass work was more appreciated in basketball than is now now is shooting a dunk anyway. That's not what we're talking about. Iran talking about a sixty foot buzzer beer so this shot did not win the game but it did could it in overtime and the lakers play for lost anyway in overtime. This shot that was significant to me. I remember as being the first beater long shot probably with some before that this is the first buzzer beater launch and sixty feet way past half quarter about sense about a half court. Shot can't remember what angrily had if it was straight honored aside but it was Was great shot. And that's something has happened a lot since klay feel like this was the first time somebody shot a half court shot. That beat the buzzer. Didn't win a game. As i said put it in overtime but it was a significant shot. The first of its kind of going to say ask my second one. Third one third one is about a coach. This is a meme rates. A series of things that somebody did. Like sky clocks like creams skyhook. This is a singular event camping in early nineteen eighty. Nine time i was in college just graduated from college. Buzzer beater the ugliest buzzer beater. Ever not the prettiest shop for sure so kids from north carolina. State aches shot. It maybe shy. There's still some argument whether he was shooting or passing. I don't really know what he put the ball up against Always houston so north carolina state. They're huge underdog in the pilot game against houston's iconic you guys our economy we were vice slamma jamma. There were like the bomb early eighties houston university in basketball and nc state was definitely the underdog for the game tied. Fifty to fifty to the north carolina state guy throws a brick now. Was it a pass or shot. Dead debate goes on the way short. However renzo charles right teammate. He sees the ball coming down. And i think he has presence of mind to know that. Ball's short so he goes up and he gets it in mid air just before any defender realizes what's going on. I think most people are kind of backing off waiting for rebound with the wasn't gonna be one. Lorenzo charles gets up in the air catch his in dunks it right. They're all in one spell swoop. Here's one second left and that is kind of the question was shot wasn't a pass was a alleyoop pass. Pregame postgame tastic. listen to. He's caught on camera running down the court desperately looking for someone to celebrate with. He makes a beeline for the nearest player. But before he gets there. That player gets mugged by another player near huggins. So he veers to the side heads for another guy seems to be standing by herself and other. Maybe it was a coach or another player. Team person he gets there that guy's getting starts getting hugged and mobbed by somebody else so he veers off in another direction in.
