Who Should USC Hire as Its Next Coach?

"So i think. Usc should go get a nfl coach. I think name image likeness is going to be a little bit of an avalanche the next decade and these nfl coaches are not control freaks. They've dealt with players getting paid. They're very comfortable with it. They've got owners in the nfl. they're not in the. I have to control everything. Business i said doug peterson to me matt. Nagy if the if the bears fired him anthony lynn. All one playoff games in the nfl. All have a presence If you go. Look at usc miami and ucla three urban universities. Mike McCarthy Compares Coaching Dak Prescott and Aaron Rodgers

"Mike mccarthy opened up about what he learned his pastime with aaron rodgers car relationship with dak prescott. It was all done in what was described as a quote relaxed environment for forty five minutes. Several cowboys reporters mccarthy also spoke of constantly of the cowboys situation. Saying obviously you wanna win games. But i'm building a championship program. Not just trying to win one. We're trying to win them. All so shannon. What do you make of this informal session with mccarthy skew say sometime why why would you tweet that or why would you go to social media why you know skill. I'll believe mike mccarthy believe he's not the coach of the green bay packers because they're rogers wanted him fired. I believe that's what scale with. Someone says oh he. The clinic was that he weird weird he. He's a very intelligent guy. well he the guy. That's very condescending. That thinks he knows more than you and he talks down to people and why that will be going back. Guess what they get this and go back. Aaron rodgers aaron. Did you hear what might say. Yup look out i play. I don't know how many how many of these. Tom lehrer do coach landry. How many did jimmy. Johnson do sit down interview. What is this your the hand you. The head coach of the dallas cowboys cared about no relationship. They won't you there to win game. They will to be free. They come into the house to eat. You're not sleeping anybody's house. Nobody wanna have no drink with you. They jones to win football game. Jerry jones causley talks about his football mortality and what he would be willing to do to hold their trophy one more time. And you're talking about that. I got a great relationship with that. I'm building a championship program. You ain't alabama championship program. Wins have shifted three. You got exactly what you're looking for because you for three years water jason gear dub. That may eight eight. Oh jason eight you wanted to go and now you've got somebody

"Talking about one of the most embarrassing movie scenes in the history of his life. I go back to my trailer. To get my robe. And i look on my bed and there's three paint socks one is eighteen inches long one is about twelve inches long and one is about four inches long. And i'm looking and i'm going. You got to be kidding me. I gotta pick one of these and put on my penis and all at holy cow. Now if i take the big ones everybody in the world knows that just no way that that's possible. I got horses. That couldn't feel that thing out. So i said if i take the little one. They're going to laugh at me because it's not very long and i know the wardrobe people are going to gather around ago. Which one did you go with. Obviously that went with the middle one. Not put that stupid thing on. I got up there to do the scenes. And i had a penis on. And i've never been more uncomfortable in. I live well. You'll meet a finish that story. 'cause i've i've heard this story many times and told him many times but there's a aftermath of that was doing the scene from failure to launch and they had the one scene where he fits around from the aquarium and matthew mcconaughey is supposed to be startled and so they read one ran the scene. The director looked at matthew and he says no. I want you know good reaction when when he whips around and so they did it again. Matthew mcconaughey still didn't have that sorta look so terry says hey i'll give him a startled. Look he took the sock off and who after around yes going. Hey says oh my. That was all rap. Terry bradshaw bringing up the best actor in matthew mcconaughey. I want to. I want to cover with you jimmy. I've never asked you this. Because i think this was the period of greatest jimmy johnson. I don't give a bleep. You were doing advertisements for penis enhancers. And i'm like jimmy has really let go. He's like i. I don't care what anybody thinks. Not the jabber cared what people thought very much actually terry the one that gave me that commercial. They first approach terry to do it and he was telling me about it and he. I just think bring myself to doing it. Did give me and net. chris. Mccall hey i'll be. I'll be a spokesman. I'm ready. You have done. You have late in life. You've evolved with hobbies right you have kept. I've talked to you about wayne. High zanga the late owner of the dolphins and l. quality time left. You said he would send you jetskis and remind you to enjoy the little things late in life. You've seen here. That bobby bowden passed away here recently. And i don't know can those things move you more these days jimmy than they used to be able to get to you. Well you know i i. It's a different lifestyle now and you know i didn't know bobby bowden. Well you know. Obviously we continue against one another but such a great man you know not only a great football coach but just a great band someone that we all are and and then you wayne highs get the same thing you know really wanting to buy the spending of ever known in my life But he told me he said you know quality time well You know just you know. Don't don't wait until it's too late when you got plenty of money but you can't enjoy it because you're too old and they said you know they sure and check out quality time left so that really made an impact on my life. One of the stories that can be told now. Jimmy all these years later about your last year with the dolphins and wear wayne high zanga was helpful to you because you were grieving. The loss of your mother. Yep and then you know wayne Let me use jet went to mother's funeral still during the season and it hit me pretty hard as you know. And and. That's when i realized i i've really got to slow down and i i. I gotta take some time for my family. Because just like i said you know at my yeah hall of fame induction speech yeah. That's you know. Appreciate the people you love because there's gonna come a day that you're not gonna be able to do that. How many teams. Since jimmy have tried to persuade you to come back and lead their franchise. Oh danielle did there for a long. I'll quite a few teams. It came down to check. I wanted to go back into coaching. You know back when. Tom benson and bob mcnair. And you know. Jeffrey lurie. And you know dean spanos. Ao been down here. But then there was a period that it wasn't coaching you. They wanted me to come back either as a general manager or a consultant As for the general manager but now now it is all they come down vice. In fact i'm going to get playing. Go up to jacksonville Wednesday they're gonna they're gonna come down. Pick me up. And i'm gonna go watch practice and does it with urban and probably talked to team but Yeah so now. it's more of consulting down from the keys actually working twelve months out of the year ready to do that no matter how much they pay you. Leave the keys for jacksonville. No matter how private how many private planes they send them surprised. You're still doing that instead. I would suspect that you'd rather be on the boat in the morning. Yeah but i'm doing it. As a favorite urban urban has been down here. We've known each other. I talk him and his son. Nate fishing back ten years ago. He worked with us at fox. And you know. I have talked to him. Cut you you time. When he's getting ready to you know eight turn down texas and then again when he ended up taking the jacksonville job. So i'm doing it as a favorite for urban. What did you tell him about turning down texas and the taking the jacksonville job. What is the advice of a guy who has been the biggest and the best in both in both world. Well yeah we just talked about you know those strains of recruiting and one thing another and actually we actually compare to you. Know going into professional football as well and I i did actually give him my. You know my Feeling about what he should do. I just Talked to him about the pros and cons of both positions. So what would be the conundrum on something like texas. Is it not the greatest of the program. I'm sure they would have paid him more money than than any college coach was being paid. I i i don't think he is. I don't think saw the tat like That jacksonville kissing and You know. I think he wanted to challenge a professional football He's -ccomplish everything. Acheived -ccomplish intelligible and so even challenge professional football. You didn't dare council him. Don't do it anymore.

Relax and drops and gone drops what array that would be stugatz standing outside with my mouth open why i fall the rain drops. Roulet jobson gumdrops rain. That would be this easy donlevatar. Show with these two guys harry you. Oh i'm happy to hear your voice happy for you this weekend. I it was. It was good to see you so emotional and moved. And i've told you before. I think that i've i've admired the man that you've become after football well. It was a good It was a good weekend and for my family was very busy you know they. They wrote me pretty hard as far as old autographs pictures and what they other but well. We're at the time. I wanted to tell people your story jimmy. I think that they know it. But i'm fascinated. Almost i think most despite all the success that you seem to be a lot happier after football after coaching football than you were wild. Coaching football will God i think that's true. Dan i used to say the happiest time in my life. The most fun was my five years at University of miami. I love you. Know living in south florida you know. Of course we had tremendous success And it was just a fun fun time but the most fun time in my life is right now. I'm closer to my family than i've ever been am Still involved with football with fox. Nfl sunday and plus living in the florida keys. How can you get any better. I don't know that. I could have imagined though. Jimmy the the monster that football sort of major so to be a titan to be a successful leader. I couldn't have imagined jimmy johnson who what is A present and loving dad. It would have been hard for you to imagine too. I imagine yeah it and daniel hours that i was working in really the attention and the stress that was under coaching working around the clock every day of the year And never taking time off for my family It really Cause some problems You know my youngest son struggled You know when. I wasn't there and and you know really i wasn't as close to my family is what i should have been and and so even though i hit tremendous tremendous success. You know in football. I didn't have tremendous success with my family. And so you know pulling back and now. I'm still involved with football. But yeah my two sons and my daughter-in-law's I mean in in rhonda. We are all as close as close. Couldn't be and we have fun with each other and it's it's a different lifestyle. Now i love to hear a jimmy. And i'm curious if i can ask you this without being invasive but you say it caused some problems as if you're not being present as a father because your your sons struggles with addictions have been public. And the work. He does to help others with addiction. Now has been public. Do you blame yourself for anything. That happened there because you weren't around well. I don't know that. I blame myself but you know i i really feel like had been there. More for him Maybe we could have prevented some of those problems and You know. I didn't even realize him until he was just so far down that it was difficult to turn him around. So you know. Maybe i to you know maybe nipped in the bud before it got to be a problem. Where and how did jimmy. Johnson learned to tell his sons that he loved them. Because that was something i remember. I wrote a lot of profiles about you and did a lot of reporting and you are a bit of a mercenary robot football leader. Ceo chewing glass all the time Where did you learn how to do some of that stuff. Well dan and of course. A lot of people can relate to this 'cause there's a lot of people out there that got family members or friends or people that are close to that struggle with addiction Laying in bed at night just crying. My eyes out saying to myself i i would give any amount of money in the world is somehow some way i knew how to correct the problem That's when i realize if things ever got better he was going to know that. I love and can you look back on your university of miami days and just take us through some of that stuff that made it your best experience in in football really right because it was your most. I don't understand why you always said that. It was more joyous than winning with the dallas cowboys. Well really i think the relationship i had with the players you know in college football and professional footballer so different The length to the season the financial situation with professional players agents College football the head coach is more of a mentor and in some ways a substitute father figure You spend a tremendous amount of time counseling players. you know. They're young kids you know. They've left home for the first time in their life. You know they're out on their own you know. They've got to take the responsibility of of really. You know gauging their time Getting up in the morning going to class getting an education daily the girlfriend dealing with being away from home so the head coach really spends a tremendous amount of time with the individuals. You know the young kids making sure they're on the right path and I like that. I really enjoyed it. Especially since you know. We had so many inner city kids you know. When i went to miami you know there was just slightly over. Fifty percent of them graduated. You know about adding you know. So academic support system counselors and mandatory study hall and mandatory crisis during the way close to ninety percent graduate and that number is state about the same ever since i left so i took a lot of pride in that. And you know i. I really enjoyed the relationship ahead with the players and especially players that have come from you know maybe sparse means income from difficult backgrounds and professional football. You're dealing with agents and they're playing for the money. It's a professional sport. And so you don't have that relationship with the players you know. So that's why it was really different. It's interesting to hear you say that jimmy because you really did connect in that space with black players. You had a unique vantage point on the good work that you were doing even as you you had to have been going crazy feeling everything around. You was totally missing misunderstood because of what you're seeing in those kids what they were seeing in those kids and then it became about a handful of arrests. And the you know the catholics versus convicts but you you've got a bunch of kids out there that that's as close as you've been loving players right. You didn't love your players in the pros like that. Well i don't know the looks up a hard word to find to be honest with you. I think you have different kinds of love Now you have for your family you have love for your wife. You have love for people you deal with. You have love for friends. And i think all of them are different. Can you take us through what you've viewed as your worst time at miami like when you recall it. It was the happiest time that you had. But what didn't feel like that. Well you know that first year was difficult. I to the way i accepted the job is always going to retain the previous staff and those staff members did not know me. They did not my style. i didn't know them. You know three of them that had applied for the job. Found out five minutes before i got there that they did not.

"I thought he was terrific his rookie year for the most part beat sometimes but he also led the team in interceptions with three. And what you say. I went back and looked at my every play. I was on in tape i. I should've had my aunt alabama. Fourteen times only got three interceptions. I should have had fourteen interceptions. So this is a guy who's pretty determined to improve in year two and take that quantum leap and beyond him i would say kelvin joseph's been physical guy hasn't stood out like digs has the.

"Bobby the guy who went to camp twice versus the guy who hadn't been on all body we're just i'm out raising funding. Okay it's It is The doomsday podcast. And and we're talking about. Ed has had two trips out. He was there at the beginning and then he had a few days in and he was able to He was able to kind of follow up with the cowboys. Biggest observations from being out there and by the way the breaking news today demarcus lawrence has been cleared to come off the physically unable to perform list pup list. We like to call it and he will not be in thursday's game but he will be able with with whatever he was dealing with his back he'll be at herniated disc in his back. He said this is third back surgery of his career. So i'd say people should be more concerned about that injury. Then they should be what dak prescott is going through right now and then i think the other injury update was amari. Cooper spoke to reporters for the first time today since camp began. He's also been on the pup list. He's not been cleared but he said some interesting things one is that he has bone spurs in his ankle removed in january and that causes kind of inflamed and other part of of his that was you know had bothered him since his college days at alabama but the the interesting thing he said to me was he's down ten pounds in this camp he still wants to get down. Five more pounds would be down fifteen pounds from where he was last year. He's always played at two twenty five looking to play to ten. And so i think this might maybe be the result of. Hey at the end of this year. It's either you or michael gallup on this football team you know. I mean cd. Lambs ben sensational. He's going to be the number one receiver on the football team in my opinion this year. Ready so there's your first observation. Wow for interesting observations. That's that's one. The number one wide receiver for the dallas cowboys will be cd land. I think cd land will be the number one receiver. And if if they have any thought at all that this is amari cooper slash early certainly structured his contract so that they could get out of it after the season he's has no more guaranteed money than i think that's the direction you wanna take. Cd-roms career right right now. You need to come out of this feeling like no question. He's the number one receiver on the football team. If we're not going to bring back amari cooper if you decide to. Michael gallup is more affordable and rather have him paired with cd-rom than you would amari cooper. I mean they'll be far enough away from the deal that it's not gonna bother them. They traded first round pick. They'll feel like they got value over the three. Or four seasons at amari was here for surrendering that pick and they got put in a bad position. They put themselves in a bad position quite honestly to allow him to re free to seeing and get the second is paid wide receiver. Deal all the football He he he isn't worth that. He has been a very good player. But i think my my argument about him as a number one receivers. He doesn't show up in the big games you know. When whenever he's matched up against one of the premier corners football he gets shut down. Shut down by gilmore. In new england. He got shut down by dairy in detroit. And so. I don't think you'll see that happen to cd lamb i think. Cd-rom got more dog in them than amari cooper whole while little dog bulldog boy like a little bit like Michael were used to have. Ed i am i am sort of curious your observations. There's the kelvin. joseph mica parsons seeing the cowboys. I frown linebacker out there. And then vander and jailed smith. The thought is beat again. Both of them could be on their final. It's that same scenario. Where these guys gotta they gotta play their asses off because their jobs are in jeopardy and they clearly that that message has been clearly delivered when anybody saying a thing just by the fact that mike. Parsons is playing at every position on the field on defense like dan. Quinn cannot sleep at night because he's coming up with all these new ways to use. Mike parsons on defense. He's gonna rush him off. The edge plays middle linebacker. I think jalen will probably be more of a pass rush specialist than anything else. Based on what we've seen to this point now roles are still being defined and injuries can still happen to change the whole equation. But i think one of the most important things with the defense as bad as they were last year. You would expect these guys to be really open to change right. I mean they gave up the most points in franchise. History and the franchises played football for six decades. They were the second worst run defense in football. Only the texans per worse. So i think these guys are willing to make the change. And they've really embraced. What dan quinn is doing dan. Quinn is a very hands on. These guys are working harder than they ever were. Worked under rod marinelli They're being pushed and he's out there and he's in the drills with them you know. He's he's wearing the arm pat. He's holding the ball blocking sled so he's fully engaged with them in this and and i think there's been a lot of bienne about that. That's not the way it was last year. You know mike nolan was putting a very difficult situation and fired after one year and it didn't seem like it was that way under rod marinelli the last year's either so these guys are working hard and i think they love the way they're being coached. Okay being coached hard excited. These are very good observations. I love the water observation deck. Now people want to hear Orders take on some of these rookies. sean right kelvin. Joseph some of the some of the you know the obviously i was hearing naval gallimore was. He's not rookie. But he's been around a little bit second second year. I i've heard he's doing really well Who who are some of the or any of the rookies other than mike. Parsons start to step up in in in the cornerback we nets. That's a big deal. It seems like cd lamb and and digs are having some some pretty von exists. Yeah it's not quite yet. To the level of michael irvin against dion sanders and in practice that we used to see out at valley ranch back in the nineties But it's it's competition that should make digs better. Like how many guys is he going to go up against. That are better than cd. Land more athletic than cd lamp. Yeah he's he's been. Poster is a few times every time you see lamb some ridiculous catches on digs but digs is winning a fair share of those matchups as well. And but nobody nobody is going gonna be able to defend. Cd lamb the way. He's playing right now with the offense that he's in the talent around him. That's why i'm predicting such a huge season for this kid. I mean he had he set cowboy rookie records and he played with four different quarterback. Last year you only played five games with dak prescott but digs is a very physical guy. dak prescott loves his mentality. His attitude he talks about you know he talks. He gets into it with dak from day. One talking about. I one that rap i picked that ball and you know the whole the whole deal very physical type player emotional player..

"Yes absolutely. I think he's a guy up to it absolutely. I get an initial finance. That was talk. I was talking to the jacksonville. Jaguars team Just the other day monday. Yeah monday and i was talking to them about the writing on the wall. And i've seen. I had a front row seat when i watch this before the same thing because i came into dallas. You know then then the next year jimmy and coach from college comes in we. I first we got the first quarterback the best quarterback in just like that. I told him in this game. Our game is not just about kill. You know because we had offense lineman that people were calling bucks. They will call it now. Nobody knew anything but the right people came along and got together and they became the greatest office of line up. What what i'm saying is is this game because we have jen man to man combat win each time week at football player in him in may come back not not many professionals. Have that you guys don't do. I don't do it in my profession now. We don't have to face a man any man to man show skill matter but also will you see what i'm saying when you're facing another man here in the hand man to man we'll there's a big part of it too if skill is well and it is nick that brings about a winning team and doubt yes you can say what you will and a lot of people have a whole bunch of opinions on the deal but the will indicate trivedi he rates off the chart on that and i say he has great skill. So that's why. I believe yakkers a lot of pressure by doctor. Live up to all of it. Because he's great. On the three parts. That i think make up. Great football teams. So you just basically told urban meyer drawing a parallel the early early cowboys and you joined urban. Meyer and lawrence. We're gonna win three super bowls in four years become the dominant. I've told them. I told them i told them to add. Mattel told us we we. We went from one in fifteen twenty three to bows and four years three four three short years later right they can do a queer doing sooner because back then. We were still fitting quarterback in the nfl sister from now the system to the quarterback in the nfl. You see what i'm saying. Now do you can do it quicker and you have to have those elements together no matter what you do and i told them sometimes when you guys are hanging out but you have to be careful you have to feed and hold each other accountable will go to chucky. You got so. We're holding a seventeen. And i hope.

"So i was out in cowboys. Training camp my second visit last weekend who should appear to my right wearing the nfl network polo but former cowboys hall of fame. Three time super bowl winning receiver michael irvin. Who joins us now. Michael you ben to both the bucks camp today on tom. Brady's birthday nice to invite you on his birthday and the cowboys camp in a short space of time and those two teams start the whole. Nfl season against one another. So let me ask you about the team's first and then we'll talk some hall of fame stuff because it's a big week for the hall of fame and for the cowboys organization. But let me ask you first. What were your takeaways about dak prescott. And how concerned would you be about your quarterback coming off a huge injury that that cost him so much of the season last year. Now having not being able to throw in training camp for a length of time as he gets ready for this this epic game And i know everybody and has been playing it down and saying this is just something minor. And they're being precautionary. And i and i hope that he has the goksel. I hope that he's exactly the truth. But i am a bit concerned that that that that that that this thing may be a little bit more serious than they're playing on onto. I watched back you date right shaky snaps doing these drugs and then died. He's still use his all on now. That means you use your on the throw that ball yards in front of you. If you can't crank up to yard right now. Why am i too believe in you know two three weeks you can get up sixty yards i i. I'm i'm a bit concerned with commit. And i hope no and pray and i'm being my niece tonight. Hope and pray on it. But i hope it's as minor as they're saying but i am a big concern. What what about overcoming the gruesome leg injury that limited him to five games as you watched them run around you does. He looks like he's fully recovered. And willie be the same quarterback that he was before playing that physical style and the dual threat. And that's what i asked you. We'll talk to him about now and let me be honest here because when i watched it you know i remember what i was like coming back off over me. I remember watching people come back off a certain injuries and and what happens sometimes. Is your gate changes a little bit your gate. you know. You're you you kinda you start and your stocks once you get in stride. You're pretty good. I can feel tale. I feel cared little just little just a little bit. There's a little bit but that really. It may just be that the gate had changed a little on how you run because you you know you do run differently. Have you come back and out miami surgery. So so but. But i think he's fine in that category and i think he'll be fine which is a hard thing and that's why i said even at camp. Let's say no. I don't know get any clear ever ahead this kind of pressure or i called it Circumstances in challenge facing him in his first game back is returning for the first time of that gruesome with egg injury. You're talking about now. He's dealing with the show dangerous. He's on hard knock either. They're doing the hall of fame game. Top was and then the opening game of the season he has the go into. I mean literally stance literally delighons. Dan do have to go champions. Where his landmark and dropped their flag in your own own town to win their own super bowl in the first time ever in. Nfl and way got you got that great defense. Could they got everybody back there. Even a guy like oj. How that were from the year before and the guy that's quarterbacking that whole shoveling is the greatest dudayev played the game period at the quarterback position. There you go prescott there and you probably you just. Don't wait. Call fake becker life. That's our alabama battle right there man. I saw a lot of pressure. But i love when that put be put under pressure because usually he shows up and perform any. Didn't even mention the hundred sixty million dollar contract. He has to live up to. I don't know how. I forget that but miss all of this other stuff. You know everybody is waiting. Everybody's waiting to say. I told you he wasn't worth it. I told you he was so absolutely. I don't know i'm trying to think about it. When i was in and and kim i was like me who you understand. Go wait at autumn. And that's probably why even though they can't out sater's just some minor. There's something we can't. Douse the hope of rotc of our team right now. This early and camp. You know what. I mean joke. 'cause oh my god that would put a sad place on the dallas cowboys. They announced that. Chris up going to be out for anything period of time. I've never known doctor. Jerry jones to me an injury report or downplay the significance of some players injury on michael. You know better than that. Even he's always honest in his calculations in that regard. Okay i'm becky says i know you are at editor. Absolutely start telling me cheek when you drop in that race this hearing so he has to play dangerous shipping all of that stuff. But this is going to be in saying okay. Let's go let's go here. Crack two billion billions of receptors in our immagination. And no longer just play with the millions of receptors in our reality of the brain but the bill. You're less than imagine that. Chris stop goals in win that game. Slow molly my god. Be here your american. If he wins that gay. Oh my god man every cowboy fan. There's been hiding in the last thirty years from guys like stephen as camille forty will come out are be something. It'd be something beautiful to watch. I can't wait for michael it's mostly and it's it's fun to get to talk to you and i give you credit by the way the vaccinations are up for the cowboys. I think i think you 'cause that i think you had an impact kind of call him out and so some of the numbers. Don't don't try to help. The vikings the vikings are at about sixty four percent right now. They're struggling a little bit. But i what you said. I think Had an impact eight. I wonder if you could compare a little bit. That the whole thing you got rodgers you got brady. You just saw brady. You got russell do you. I mean from a from a meant to you. spend time with him in in and you think about troy. everything's compared to troy. When you're around this guy. Do you think he has that greatness. Ed was just talking about that money and all of that is he diseases. Strike you as a guy who is up to this. I mean this is This is this is a lot to ask that.

"Because you had something to do with that so i think that's the biggest compliment that all the players can have. And this be proud of a man so deserving this one at the pro pro football team. Yeah i mean it is amazing. How other people on the staff have become legendary in their own right. We talked about joe avezzano. Obviously dave wanstead north turner. Who's had an incredible career afterwards. Rich darren paul. Jimmy's guy continues obviously Be the goat. I just you know it's cool. I mean it's it's really really exciting to see how this is all gonna unfold. Obviously it's been a long time coming Obviously in general. But just what the fact that we've had to wait an entire year because of kovin and whatnot I'm really excited to see what he has to say I i have to imagine he'll be somewhat emotional You know and i just. I don't know this really cool moment as a dallas cowboys fan like you know it does feel and i feel like it does get lost and you said that jimmy jimmy re catapulted. The brand of the dallas cowboys and jerry has done an incredible job. And i. it's about jerry. But i mean he's obviously done an amazing job at at fortifying the brand but people forget that when when you guys got there like it was not glitzy and glamorous like yes they. They were america's team but they were not this world dominant brand at the time. I mean they hit. They had fallen off. Kind of feels like I have you seen the new space jam. I haven't have you seen the new one. No i i don't know watch it. I hear it's good but it's because you sound like you've seen the original go right obviously a lot of people that they wanna and the old one instead. It's it's kind of jimmy. You just can't immolate and write a prequel not a prequel world. But do sequel to so good original when jordan. I gets to the gym with all the looney tunes. And it's like this piece of crap and joins like this is the jim and they're like. Oh all needs is a little spit shine. Then they all start like spitting in at whenever and then then. It's like beautiful and glamorous. If feels like jimmy gave the cowboys a spit shot. You know what i mean like. And then as soon as he was done laughed at me. And all of a sudden this is beautiful diamond in the nfl y'all whereas spit-shine but like kind of like that was his approach in some ways. Yeah and i think would. Also when i watch and give a speech i think will will be able to relive those moments again. Relive live twenty five years along expensive. He's been out of coach since he'd led us at super bowl. Would be able to relive those moments and really. It's almost like we're putting on our shoulders and celebrate because what he was able to accomplish so i think that that's something will be interesting. I really what he's going to say. I think it'll be pretty epic to build a watch. That and i'm excited to see it. It's gonna be a great celebration. I don't know if i'm going to be able to go or not. Because i think that it's one of those deals that that'll be hard to around it and embrace it. Because there's so much stuff going on But i think we are going to try to have something back in dallas where we can all declare get together and celebrate it where it's more intimate that sets that kicks ass like that. I guarantee like every dallas cowboys fan thinks that's the coolest thing ever that y'all still get together break. Bread drink water shirley and You know just just tell stories water. Tequila. i mean i have you. Are you heineken. Guy like did you. Were you ever inspired to take up heineken. because jimi specific i guarantee you. There is a dallas cowboys. fan somewhere. That drinks. heineken is gross. It is because jimmy. Johnson is a heineken guy. You know what. I never did. Inevitably really disciplined a pattern myself after jimmy johnson especially when it comes to beer because to me that there's not really a beer i don't like but it's a good beer but i think it's the way heat the whole tag with it. The hines and the nachos and everything and you know we could do three our podcast stories about jimmy man. I could sit and rattle off so many of these stories but know. That's the uniqueness of it made everyone has to have a story has to have how they got there and how this thing off formulated and the the store at indian and i just think it's a great end store to this book of by jimmy. Johnson finally getting pro football Hopefully the ring bottom will follow that Shortly but it's kind of like what troy said it's like i don't really think that he cares about the ringer. Bonnard morrison hall of fame. Pro football fame. And so this is something that i this is the in my book. This is into everything as far as my football career. And so that's the thing. I'm excited about our j. My last question. And then we'll wrap up good outta here. Obviously is jimmy's choice. But he picked troy to present him. I know he has terry bradshaw like he has a fleet of people that are part of it. Whatever but betrays the one presenting him if you could have picked his presenter and that's a weird question but would you have picked troy. Is that the person that you because you've talked so much about. How troy was y'alls quarterback and what he meant to you guys. I have to believe that for all of you. It feels right. That troy is the one presenting fills right. But i i gotta be honest fries. It'd be some some osa. Turn not the troy's not close rank So i thought maybe it would be maybe in his one of his family members or someone like that. But i just thanked him. Trower really close. I think that they understand the i. Guess the procession of them. Not if you watch the football life you watch choice story You know the time that he was you know when we got our asses kicked by the detroit. Lions game steve. Burr line was a quarterback. And you know choi was was was fine with his name he wanted to play. But then you fast forward in will. It did surprising but it doesn't mean it makes a lotta sense. You know because those guys came in together You know they. They both were on the same wavelength. They both like structure. They'd it's black and white that You mentioned you mentioned stolen Trailer was a in some way stoke in a good way because he kind of had that persona were. It's all business. And this is how. I'm gonna motivate so they had similar personalities. If you will so. I think yeah i think if anyone you would you would select to present you or i understand. Terry's someone can present a man and he's done an introduction on video that he did that. Yeah it makes a lotta sense because those guys built this name Yet to have everything else to go along with it. But they've been through a lot and they spend a lot of time together And they keep. They kept entrusts for a long time and You know to mater. There are a lot of life so it makes a of sense that he would do that. Not as bad way. I decided choice. I'd love troy choice. he's a. he's a great teammate. And he's a he's a great friend so it's a huge honour. And could you imagine of all people that either you know anyone would select the presentiment hall of fame you got picked and i think that's what troy said he said look. It's one of the biggest honors. I've ever got billed to be part of that celebration and think about all the.

"Com. You hear so often in sports. I was gonna say the nfl but like people say like you know. I just wanna win like winnings all matters like winnings. The most important thing like one of the coolest things that tom brady says i mean only tom brady because this is you know when he's asked what his favorite super bowl ring is. He says the next one right like that's that's the one i'm i wanted. Just i'm obsessed with winning. And that's like jimmy was kind of the first cut of people like that feels like an in at least a long time because jimmy i feel like was the introduction of the nfl to a new era because every great head coach to that point in time had been this really stoic reserved personality. Obviously vince lombardi. Tom landry chuck knoll. Bill walsh people kept close to the vest. And here's jimmy. You know chugging. Heinekens adhere cusses. Out and bragging about you know what i mean. We're in short shorts and and having polished hair And one of the other stories. I want to ask about because i know you guys all talk bob sturm until difference just stories about jimmy kind of the person and then the todd archers piece about how about them cowboys which was after the ninety two title game. But i- story that. I i i honestly feel like doesn't get talked about enough. Was the guarantee in ninety three. And i've never asked you this before but like what was that like. How did you find out Just for for younger fans like we kind of joked about early You guys are going into the title game and ninety three against the forty niners. This time at texas stadium and jimmy. You know the legend is. He's listening to local sports. Talk radio driving dinner And just listen ended. People talk about life man. You know it's going to be a close game. You know the forty niners really going to hang with the cowboys. Beat him and said he just says like this is stupid. Any calls in in intel's them. You know guarantees. We're gonna win the game. And i mean says you know you could put it in three inch bald letters. You know on on the front of the paper and they do well. What all that like. Did you get a copy of the paper. Like i mean. What was your experience at that story like. Well first of all.

No Grease, The Small Business Champion Of The People

"All right y'all back on the line. Deion and jimmy. Johnson from no greece are back on the line and of course last time we talked. It was a controversy going on at southpark mall that has been resolved and now they here to kind of tell us. What was the conclusion of that controversy. How ya doing brothers going man. I'm so proud of y'all man. I'm so extremely proud. Man that was a great look for us here in charlotte man to see them do the right thing and they wouldn't to underwrite thing. We wouldn't have stood up for our rights and what was right. God back this up one thousand percent you you started the whole thing man so we appreciate you. People really heard heard our voice. I threw you manso. We appreciate Being j murphy and everything that you you brought to the table for as so thank you so much well. We give all praise the gulf for having the courage to Talk about things like this and you know we doing this for our children. We are doing this like dame dash that we this for the culture. Let's talk about the conclusion note of what happened between you and south park mall. It came to resolve by way of simon property from corporate Getting involved so it wasn't a more management from south park. It was corporate Simon property and actually wanted to see os clue in and they met with me and my brother that friday. And let's be clear it was the people and it was the the media and all of those different outlets that no them charlotte it. Wasn't you know no greece wasn't germane game. You know it was the people and particularly that people are charlotte and so The ceo he flew in. We met them on their friday. They informed us. On some of the you know how was kinda mishandled on You move management side and you know there was a deal being worked That the lower management didn't know corporate was doing with a bigger company which included twenty stores in that store that we were in which included in the math. They knew that the best thing to do was finish out. Lease and then Finish that deal with that company A more broader thing was that they recognize that we had already been five other locations in simon properties. They wanted to help us expand and they're going to give us a permanent lease there in South park so choose to do it. At the end of the lease Actually already offered us two locations already in there. We just haven't made a decision on which one of the locations we would you know Prefer okay and guessing the nutshell gang. Yeah i just want to back up. You know just a little bit. Was that that pressure that the city the people of charlotte put on on simon property in in south park. You know may that resolve happen real real soon. You know in twenty four hours. Basically they had already reversed. You know the whole combination of our lease and so that was already know down at twenty four hour that they was not terminating us and then everything else was about. How do we do better as a corporate entity working with small businesses. How do we do better. So that's how discussion got to wanted to see ios clients charlotte and having that discussion with us so a lot of people when they were looking at this story. You know two black barbers in south park and people were were saying. Hey nah is this. Racism i an are. They doing this deliberately. Because they don't want black people to become successful business entrepreneurs in south southpark mall in and then others would want to come in and say. Hey look we don't need that many black people in the south park ball. That wasn't the case at all. Was it or was that was not issue with south park. Simon property it was not the race the race card but the issue of the community and in particular small businesses and black businesses and particularly. Those issues are the broader issues that they attached with no greece's issue. That's why we want to kind of continue this conversation so that we could deal with some of the broader issues. That's happening not only in charlotte across america was small businesses and specifically. You know when we start talking about small businesses. we're talking about black businesses. Also so. I think that's the that's why we think it's important to continue this conversation. And start to plan strategies and actions moving forward because this really energized the small business community when i saw this happening and everybody put themselves in your place. I know that you want to really be a catalyst for helping. Small businesses thrive and and the begin to be established especially with young people. What do you think is our next step for building. Economic mobility was small businesses. Not a we have. The city's attention. And when i say we i'm tom. The small business community is now. It's time for us to put the pressure you know on our politicians and our leaders here in charlotte and say okay. What are we doing as a small business community. What opportunities really are afforded to us here in charlotte. Let's start holding our leadership accountable. And when i say our politicians talking about our our private equity investors here the banks. Those are the people that we need to start saying. Okay now what are the opportunities here because we have this challenge here with you. Know being data city and meaning no when economic mobility. Here you know. We have a a group of people that fallen last here. I mean if you're born poor in charlotte you remain poor for the rest of your life right and small businesses the big answer to that. We need to create more small businesses so that we could deal with this poverty issue here in charlotte. You know we're talking about you know tax dollars and we're talking about politicians who obviously they get paid by tax dollars. They need to be held accountable. These answer

"Jimmy. Johnson describes how his rolex twenty four started with himself behind the wheel to kick off the entire race and to have an opportunity to drive action express to have my former sponsor with ally on board and chelsea's here jeff gordon. You know pre-race. Although i did miss the fans now being there there still was just a great energy To be standing there knowing. I was getting ready to start This just amazing event. You know. I've never had the honor to start in this race before so a lot of really cool emotions and memories and thoughts at all. Never forget pine now jimmy during that first step behind the wheel was et more. Making sure that you didn't wreck the race car. And kind of keep yourself in contention for the rest of the team. Sure you don't wanna be the one to break the toy so to To miss some of the carnage. There were a few close calls. That i had ellen pico. Some some kind of two or three white off. The king and was spinning came back up on the track and turn five right in front of us. That one really got my attention because the dirt and dust was in the air and i couldn't see and pick the right lane and was able to squeak thyself certainly a lot of nerves to deliver the car in one piece and i'm so happy to have that out of the way can go rest and just kind of fall into the rhythm of what this race needs. Look for jimmy behind the wheel. The chip ganassi number forty eight indycar this season at road and street courses on the schedule.

Daily - Jimmie Johnson had a rough 2020 Cup Season

"For jimmy johnson. Let's just say he had a ton of obstacles in his last full time season. In nascar you get into the year and oftentimes times. They're things that disappoint your stress. You out in a negative way. And i haven't made it that far into the season to encounter any of that But last year was a really intense year. You know had very high expectations for myself The year didn't go as planned obviously Having my cova positive covid nineteen tests and missing the brickyard and missing the playoffs. You know there is a lot of negative stress on me during all of that so it can't come back at you know. This is motor torn. I do do recognize that but last year at least you know the middle part of the year Into the start of the playoffs you know it was an uncomfortable pressure. A different type of pressure. That experience too often jimmy johnson compares the cars. He's driven in the rolex. Twenty four nascar and indycar from the dp. The dpi is the car does move around in the corner. You do lack rip off and have to drive the and there's a big window to slip and slide in that that's much more in line with my nascar days. I'm finding in the indycar that that window to slide. Things around is so narrow and i've i've looped it on corner exit multiple times now a result so i i feel like i'm able to once i get into the turn and leave the corner in a dpi car or i'm still on edge in the indycar.

Looking Ahead After Kentucky Speedway

"Beli go to the all-star racist of course midweek. We're excited for that, but then on the next points race Texas in points. Were there a premium now? Kyle because Cole custer winning this race taking a playoff position only nine races to go before the cut-off yet you know we talked about it a couple years ago when Chris Butcher won at Pocono when you're outside the top twenty five or back in points far enough, and then all of a sudden you leapfrog into that top. Top Sixteen, and you don't just leapfrog into that top sixteen you leapfrog into the playoffs. You leapfrog all the way that's how simple it is with that win, so I think when we look at that that puts a lot of pressure on sixteen, Seventeen, eighteen, also on fifteenth fourteenth. Thirteenth twelve these guys. It tightens up it again I'm back to the musical chairs, analogy, the music just stop for somebody and that top fifteen and they got bumped out. They went into this race thinking. They were only a few points in or a few points now and now they're out completely. They've to figure out how to find their way back into it, so that is the amazing part, and that is the exciting part for me about watching these next eight or ten races leading up to that bump leading up to that playoff situation, because there's so many things so many strategies that go into it and you've always got to be looking behind you at a team that can jump. Jump in and win a race. Yeah, so yet. Pressure is mounting now so when this season started. What feels like two and a half years ago? It's hard to imagine that we're talking about just non-racist until we get to the play offs, so I think that because of everything that's been happening. I'm not sure how many people have even been paying attention to those playoff standings that much, but with coal customers win. That is open. Everyone's ass is open. The eyes of those people that are. Back to sixteenth Jimmy Johnson sitting in that sixteenth spa is the eyes of some rookies and some other teams that haven't won yet, but see that. Coq Gun win a race. That says that this is open to anybody and everybody could possibly do that, so the the pressure's GonNa. GonNa, amount here and we've. We've got racist coming up as some very difficult tracks, a coupla double header weekends that Never GonNa come along so many things happening that we can see a lot of shakeup in display off standings as we look at, it might not look anything like what we see right now, but cold customers proved to the world that is out there for the.

NASCAR allows limited audience for first time since coronavirus, Confederate flag ban

"A historic milestone for sports in America Nascar drivers on the track today, a small number of fans back in the stands for the first time since the corona virus outbreak, and now the band confederate flag not allowed anywhere in sight. ABC's Victor Oquendo is in Florida. Green. Card going full throttle. Spree quality, welcoming back a select group of fans, but not the confederate flag that company has done more in one week for racial equality than it had done in the past seventy years. Pass cars overcome covid. Nineteen fans are back at the track for the first time today. And battling social and racial injustice with a car, bearing the black lives matter Hashtag Bubba Wallace the circuits, only fulltime black driver, leading the charge for change. This is about our brothers, and our sisters that are that are are suffering through a lot and. You look at. The confederate flag and and how yes may mean heritage to most but to a group that is in a lot of pain right now. The community is in a lot of pain. That's a symbol of hate. It's an a veteran in attendance welcoming the new era. I'm happy that. THAT NASCAR has finally realized that there are so many other people that probably Wanna come to track, but they didn't feel comfortable, and hopefully now they will talk to your drivers like Jimmy, Johnson and Kyle Busch, taking their own action, cutting ties with the helmet designer over tweets about the confederate flag, but not all drivers are united one threatening to quit after the flag band, one thousand members of the military invited to the Dixie vodka four hundred everyone's screen before entry masks were required. Fans spread out NFL pro bowl running back. Alvin Kamara there to going to homes in Miami speedway. FIRST NASCAR race rooting for bubble wallace tonight, president trump saying he won't be watching football if players Neil during the anthem responding to a tweet about the US national soccer team, not being required to stand for the anthem. Saying looks like the NFL is heading in that direction also, but not with me watching. Okay victory. Kendall joins us now from home, said in Miami Dade County at the speedway there and Victor I wanna go back to NASCAR. What will car do with fans trying to defy the confederate flag ban? Tom Nascar is finalising protocol to enforce this new policy, but the bottom line is the confederate flag is banned from all races. It's banned from all events the next race next week at Talladega where up to five thousand five fans are expected,

She did a brain scan on me and made me do all these Parkinson's test. My balance was a great I was standing on one toe, and then the other toe on both feet could turn circles I can touch my nose with my eyes closed and everything else, and the brain scan came back clean and she goes. "The more contemporary the contemporary fan doesn't they know about the nineties because of this brand of maybe tonight about the nineties but because of the brand what it become became because of the success that we had and had the brand not been a successful with Jimmy Jimmy Johnson. Jerry Jones bought the team and getting credit for that. But the reason why the cowboys one business because Jim Jan Johnson wasn't because Jerry the players that you know that that were part of that that whole dynasty troy's house it was part of but I mean just the the ability to put things together into really just a you know. Carry out the plan. I mean a lot of coaches can't do that and I think that's what made him You know such a special dude and in the stories of on the airplane of been on a way back from Washington game and and all right. There was a severe thunderstorm. I think I've talked about this before you know we're going. We're an hour out and you know we lost a game and and you know you. He did not want to be around. Jimmy you didn't WanNa make eye contact with Jimmy if after you lost the game because it just wasn't going to be good. He wanted to the pilot to land the plane in a in a tornado tornado. So in the end of the pie mating sit down and relax ethical beer because You know I I. I'm responsible for all the people on this plan. You lost a football game in on him telling the land plant and so it is some stores but just what made him his personality in the in the guy that guaranteed we'd beat the forty niners way About the cowboys I mean. How can you point a phrase just and when you hear it you know exactly what who it is and I think today I think we all should have a throwback moment we should go out and button or whoever has a you know how about them? "All right guys. Welcome back and get back to talking Jimmy Johnson the pro football hall of fame and everything else right here on the OCHO. It's going to be some makes you think about Joe Avezzano norv Turner. You know. Dave wants dead. All you know all those guys you know. There's not an astrologer Roger Happening I you know I do Wanna get your thoughts on. I tweeted this and I. I texted it to you as well. It is is I. I can't think I'm not trying to just be harsh. I mean you know that's sometimes as part of the Gig what I really truly believe. It's embarrassing for the Dallas Cowboys. That Jimmy is now a pro football hall of Famer and that it actually took this. You know a specific centennial annual class for him to get in and that he's not in the ring of honor that's it's it's a shame it really truly is yeah it is And and you know I don't know we don't know you know the behind the scenes of of all that but it certainly does you know put Put their among you know on the front of the The world stage just to you know. How do you explain this right? Yeah and the guys in the hall all of fame because of what he did in your organization. Yeah he's not what dozens yeah. Yeah no exactly You know so yeah I mean I I you know I agree with you and you know it's also you know kind of you know how like we always talk about things you can't plan you know the the same very same week that Jason Garrett Leave the organization. Mike McCarthy joins the organization and then Jimmy Johnson gets inducted into the pro football hall of fame. I mean you just can't plan that I mean and you know so here is McCarthy now you know he's now he's got you know quite a high standard To you know to shoot after and then you know I I wish him the all the success and hope he surpasses that but you you know. That's pretty high standard now. Yeah I WANNA get your. We've got a criminal out into the end here but to finish the tai-bo on the Jimmy Jerry. Thing it you're right like there could be. I mean because you know there's an infinite amount of possibilities or I guess it's technically fine but I mean there is potentially a reasonable or at least somewhat understandable reason. Why Jimmy Johnson's not during a fire like that possibility does exist? But you said it I mean you. CanNot it really explain this in all this does is really make Jerry. Jones look poorly. I don't think you know I think that you look at it. I don't believe leaving Karma that's not like you know our faith or anything but I do think it's at the very least interesting that you know so you know because people say Jerry's there is only in the hall of fame because he stood on. Jimmy shows whatever but. I think it's funny that you know denied that Jerry was celebrated with cowboys fans at Agency stadium. Liam for going on you know when they give them their hall of fame ring. That night was the night. They lost to the eagles in two thousand seventeen. That's literally the worst loss ever in a ged stadium sister. You know what I mean. That's just a really funny coincidence. And you know you look at Gil Brandt who also took way too long to get him to honor and he just barely got in there before before he got into the hall of fame and at the time the writing was on the wall that he was going into the hall but Gil Brandt went in the night. They beat the saints in two thousand eighteen. You you know what I mean this like incredible night everyone will remember forever or as Jerry went on this one that everyone wants to forget and it just I think those are funny things that automatically you know make paint Jerry in a poor light or whatever he did release a statement And he said were so happy that the hall of fame has recognized. Jimmy Johnson. Awesome for what he is. That's the first sentence and it's just like well. Then how have you not you know. It's a really unsettling thing and I think that like like throwing a boomerang. Yeah it's a really a hypocrite. I don't know what word to use but it it looks really badly on the cowboys organization. That that it actually happened. I mean great for Jimmy Johnson. But you know you know. Somebody tweeted at us on the block on the boys camp. It said that Jerry should inductive an I vehemently disagree superior that the moment should belong to Jimmy and Jimmy alone because he did he has not gotten that do in cowboys fans. He should bathe in it all in his own. If he wants have his players you know like we talked triplets. Think that would be cool but this you know. It's a really really really bad season for Jerry. Jones the owner of the cowboys. And this is kind of the. You know the closing of that circle so to speak. Yeah no I totally agree and and the yeah. Yeah I mean I I think that You Know Jerry Has Been Very very kind of to due to Jimmy in terms of you know whatever success cowboys have had in terms of including hammer recognizing them for that in fact you know may have even gone out of his way to try tried to leave him out of it but You know this it's here is something he cannot ignore it. I mean it It's very vivid. Part of You know with the cowboys success is is due to and And Yeah I think it's Jimmy's opportunity. I'm you know Going there and enjoy the moment with themselves by you know himself on on a standalone basis as a as a dynamic coach that You know did some some pioneering things to change the game and I do believe that firmly We'll go in order of importance here with regards to the new cowboys. Head coach conference title Games. You mentioned it briefly. But you haven't been on the pod sense. What are your thoughts thoughts on Mike McCarthy just to get them out into the ether? I liked him You know I think you know I have been sorry to cut you off but I meant to add things you cannot plan. They comment you go. I mean you couldn't plan first of all that the hall of fame announced these you know what I mean like the bill cower and Jimmy Me Johnson thing like they're never announced you know what I mean divisional weaken. This is like the the one time that ever happened in into your point. It was the week that the cowboys moved on from guaranteed McCarthy earthy and that had happened at halftime of the cowboys new coaches old team punching their ticket to the NFC championship game. Sorry the airport. Yeah no I mean that's very Very pinpoint and I appreciate that but no I I like the I like the higher of Mike McCarthy I liked what He's talked about that he's done in the off season I think that You know and I'm hoping hoping although we you know we really haven't seen the exact nature of what latitude and authority and level of decision. Making he is is going to have. But I'm assuming that it's going to be you know Enough that made him accept the job or helped him accept the job I certainly don't see him as a guest person to just come in here and you know. Take everything that the The Front Office wants him to say and do and do it. you know so. I'm I'm happy that we've got somebody that you know. I consider to be a high pedigree. I think He will make some changes is You know they may not take cowboys to the Super Bowl in year. One but I certainly think that the There will be a lot of Improvements mints in terms of the Execution in the and the football play and The disciplinary type of approach to the game. Something that I think were some of the weakest links that we had Past few years here. It's ironic that those would be the the weakling Sunday cowboys. You know the cowboys of today you know. In the year. The Jimmy Johnson goes into the hall of fame when those were arguably really his greatest assets. I mean it's just it is rated contract. Yeah right So finally Were recording this right after the conference unstamped ship Games are sad so we've got titans chiefs in the AFC impacts forty niners in the NFC although we didn't mention before we got there. What did you think of Troy Aikman even during the Jimmy announcement about that was very genuine? you know I mean just a moment that You know the Kodak Moment for lack of a better term but you know it was very appropriate You know that he let his emotions you no be shown to a certain degree I think people will Embrace him for that You know it certainly Demonstrates that they had a I think a very special relationship And so I was. I was very You know I was I was also you know maybe a little emotional. Don't do and I saw that but it was. I think a good moment for for football and a good moment for Jimmy Johnson and Troy all three of saint time. I think that's one of those things things that just tugs at you as a sports fan as a cowboys fan. In this instance there are times where you get emotional. I'm not trying to put this in that category but to me it feels. The moment felt a lot because that was a really powerful. Just still frame of Troy if felt like when Roger Staubach doc retired and he talked about Tom Landry and he welled up and he talked about a man in a funny hat. Looked like that you know what I mean like. There's the same sort of love and respect which was cool but anyways so choi will be calling niners packers Who who do you think wins two games last that I? Yeah One last thing on Detroit thing I to me the last thing I was gonna say is it just seemed also that you know maybe you know. He had somewhat lobbied for Jimmy with some of the sports writers. You know some of them you know so this was like okay. You know these guys you know and again. I'm just speculating. But he wanted like you could tell he was invested in them. He wanted it in not that work for it. Yeah and and not that the pride like oh my work paid off like it was pried like this is. Why did that work because he deserves? That was the motion exactly. Yeah no and I kind of felt like there was a little bit of that too. You know like wow. I'm really glad that you know this is happening for Jimmy. And you know everything that a lot of us have have tried to you know portray to others about him as finally come full circle for him so yeah but yeah so You know of the Next week game forty niners and And packers well. You know you and I watched the first time they played earlier. This season in In Boston Boston At a Chili's restaurant after the The cowboys that loss to the Patriots. So we watched that game and and it wasn't much of a game there wasn't much contest it was You know forty niners really just rolling over the packers and I'm not going to go out and predict that you know both teams things You know have matured and done a lot of things since then You Know I. I was impressed with the third down. Conversions tonight by the packers packers. I thought the SEAHAWKS You know could have control. That batter came. You know some of these times some of these things you just say..

Jimmy Johnson to enter Hall of Fame, but not in Dallas Cowboys Ring of Honor

"Really truly believe. I'm you know Going there and enjoy the moment with themselves by you know himself on on a standalone basis as a as a dynamic coach that You know did some some pioneering things to change the game and I do believe that firmly

"If you want some more information Maurice Linguist from my Alma Mater. Maurice expected to be the Dallas Cowboys. Secondary Coach under Mike McCarthy. This past weekend was the first one with Mike McCarthy as the team's head coach and it was also reported on Sunday afternoon that is expected to be. The team's quarterbacks coach is there reported reported moving on from John Kidnapped and Doug obviously was the team's tight ends coach which means that could be Jason. Witten job I don't know that's you. You know speculation for another day like I said I want this episode to be what it's about and that's about Jimmy Johnson. The former Dallas cowboys head coach the two time superbowl winner. It was announced announced on Sunday is part of the pro. Football Hall of Fame Centennial. Class of two thousand and twenty and it is such fantastic news and and to discuss all of this. We brought an very special guest none other than my dad Top Jimmy we talk his career talking to being a hall of Famer on and on and on and on so let's not waste any time here. He is my dad talking. Jimmy Johnson Hall of Famer here on coaching pleased to be joined now by a very very very very special guest. You ask for them all the time here. He is not in person will reporting over the phone peasants the one and only my best friend. Your Best Friend Dan my Dad Papa Ocho what is up my dude. Hey how are you happy to be here. I'm doing well. We don't record a lot like this Is it strange like do you feel we're not being in my office. It's a little awkward but I think I can manage. Yeah and you will be here For at least one show After the Super Bowl right or before the super bowl or any way to around superbowl time. So we'll have a live recorded or impersonal episode coming at them but we had to get an episode now. Because I tweeted this. Obviously everybody listening. Listening knows that Jimmy Johnson was announced as the three hundred twentieth member of the Hall of fame by the way. Very cool for you in the to share and talk about because we were at Super Bowl fifty one and the twenty eight to three. and He's number three hundred twenty eight but I tweeted this I. I'm thirty years old. Is I turned thirty in October. And I look a lot of people are cowboys fans because like for me you know. My Dad was a cowboys fan. You know you raise me that way. And we've shared a lot of great times and as well watching in whatever but a large reason that so many people my age my generation became came cowboys. Fans was because of what Jimmy Johnson did and so I could think of nobody else. I would rather have the sort of post announcement talk with Jimmy. Johnson is a pro football hall of Famer. What do you think about while I'm thrilled? That it Jimmy was Recognizing that manner I. It's come full circle. I mean you know I I. There's a part of me to believe that the triplets wouldn't have gotten you know the the amount of recognition and all the success they had without the Fabulous coaching that. They had by By Jimmy Johnson Obviously you know. They had a lot of talent to you. Know to begin with but Jimmy was The guy that put it all together you know. Put all the pieces of the puzzle together. made the Chemistry come together you know. And you know his psychology major major really came into full effect when he did that with the triplets on the other members of the nineties cowboys. you know so. Yeah Yeah I think it's very very exciting. You know that You know if if they're in the hall of fame you know he and Jerry's in the hall of fame you know Jimmy. Certainly Belongs along that same classification in that same same accolades that they've received because he was part of that nucleus. Ah The prime. We'll get to Jerry and a little bit and there is a bit of a you know an elephant in the room but there's an elephant in the room sort of wrinkle wrinkled at this but I mentioned that you know people my age kind of became cowboys fans to some degree or at least their fandom was all the more strengthened by Jimmy and this is a topic for another day. But you and I've talked about this I mean I don't know that the cowboys I mean. They're America's doom not trying to take away from that but I don't know that they become. I'm this global brand. If they have that decade of success in any other decade I think the fact that I mean. You know better than I. You know in the nineties like the the American economy booms you know what I mean like. It's this you know. It's the the birth of the Internet early on in its very I don't WanNa say delicate but very precarious decade in United States history. And so the you know. The country took off in a different way and so to have the cowboys do what they did in this really blitz and glamorous sway really added to the legend of it. All I mean you obviously you know where a cowboys fan for a long time before that. But what did he do for you. How did you know what what was that? Like to to live and experience. And I mean I know you you and Uncle Mandy and uncle George and everybody those characters that Ocho listeners don't necessarily know about but I mean you you had some great times. I mean in in a way that you know people might didn't so what. What was that like just to live experience on? What did it do for your fan? Well you know I think that You know everybody At the time had the utmost respect for Coach Tom Landry Hendry and You know we had come to believe in him. He had brought an enormous amount of success to the cowboys and You know so. Yeah I mean. Everybody respected him as the elder statesman. And you know I think when When Jerry took over the team and brought not in Jimmy I mean there was an initial Maybe negative reaction to that partly because of maybe a little bit of the disrespect respect that was shown to To Tom Landry But you know the way that I think Jimmy was able to have the team embrace him immediately and you know the very very contrast contrasted style that he had from Tom. Tom Landry You know just made us hard to believe you know that there could be more success in Dallas You know in the very near future and as you know I think they started out once one in sixteen His very first season they did for me. Yeah and and and You know so. We're like wow you know what just happened and here and You know and then. That's when the Herschel Walker Trade Came about and and You know they were able to put together The trade for that that ended up getting those the pig for Amit and You know in three years later you you know we're super bowl champions than you know so yeah it was. It was a very trying time for those first couple of years. But you you know Jimmy never relented you know his his Coaching style is Method of of being You know a fair yet berry assertive assertive disciplinarian type of coach. You know proved to be very very successful. The players love him. You know even though he was extremely you know disciplined and and Very little tolerance. I recall that you know he He cut a one of the running back named Kurban Richards after he fumbled twice in the game meaningless game in. I mean to to be exactly but you know but you know and some people said he made an example out of him. But you know I think it could have been anybody I really do. Feel that way and You know he just had to demonstrate that You know there was a certain Red Line that you didn't cross a lot of variables involved in the operation and the business and the end of the game and the team and you know he You know was very very You know just upfront about it. I mean you know you know the thing that he did to solidify you know the The fans following him. You know things like you know when he said You know the the Championship in the nineties. Yeah three inch spoiled lettuce. You can put that in three inch bold letters we will win this game and you know I mean that day I mean I think that's one of the you know the the most Euphoria I've ever self as a cowboys fan. When he said that? Because we're win or lose. You just felt good that you had a coach you know. Oh that was You know using every bit of his you know Ed's in in terms of philosophical to try to You you know when one pump his team up and also intimidate the other guys to the point that you know. Maybe they'd be. You know anger that they go in and start making mistakes which they did. YEA GOTTA no penalty to start the game like before kick-off. Yeah Yeah I mean you know He. He pioneered those kinds of things. You know to get into other people's heads And so you know that's That's the type of thing that Jimmy brought to the game To the team the organization that you know we just haven't seen anything in close since then and you know you know being very honest I've since we've changed coaches after him I've always had that You know maybe subliminal fault that you know maybe we could get Jimmy bag but yeah I recognized. It's past his time now so I didn't even cross my mind this week anymore but in previous times and I think I shared that were the the I would say man. It'd be awesome if they'd get Jimmy back but but no I mean he was the one of a kind was unique and in many aspects aspects and You know I can't wait to see you know his Acceptance Speech and dancing. I agree you're right. I think what ask what super awesome about Jimmy. Johnson is that there's this law and there's there's a lawyer for check mall and there's a lawyer for Bill Walsh you know in these. He's like you know they're these gigantic figures that were super respected in these brilliant men. That did all these crazy things. Dramatically not Jimmy but but Jimmy was just this like I mean this bad ass. You know this I'm GonNa drop them on the table. You know what I mean like in in that was a really Character that was a new sort of character I think for the NFL And you can pick you mentioned the Carbon Richard Story There's also the the asthma tests in the asthma field legend. And I think the best sort of like Jimmy's story is the three inch four letters but that would never happened today. Just because coaches are so stoic. You know what I mean like they hate talking as is the the best part about that story is. It wasn't like you know. Jimmy said you know after practice when the media was around he called into a radio show you know he called in because he was yeah. He was hired of of hearing even the suggestion suggestion that his team wasn't going to just whip ass in like I think that that hunger that aggression I mean like now people say they like oh I want an aggressive coach like the kind of guy that will go for like on fourth and three. That was Jimmy before you know that sort of wave cool. Yeah exactly and you know to to peel that onion back a little bit the title game. You know three interesting. He didn't do that. You know look I want to get your thoughts on the toddler games a a little bit. But he didn't do that against the two thousand nine hundred Tennessee. Titans led by Ryan Tannehill. He did that against Steve Young. And Jerry Rice. You know like the the a Santa Mighty San Francisco is already beat him the year prior. But you know he did that. A against a a Bee's that wanted to come in their house house in get revenge and he just said you know what I'm good you know. There's a lot of quotes he's got he's got the one about you. Know if you swing it a guerilla You don't swing it in lightly you hit him with everything you got which I think was their mentality but you know some. We haven't even mentioned. I think you know that I don't want to say he deserves credit for as we're way to put it but Jimmy coined how about them cowboys. And you know that's the I'm not saying like put him in the hall of fame for that but that that's just what makes them special the cowboys fans. You know what I mean. Yeah and you know you hear every Many many teams many different sports at many different levels you that same term that he coined they'll Kansas J.. Exciting them whatever. Even how about them apples in one of the movies he's in so yeah but But no I mean and I fully expect that him to interject that phrase That that that term that he coined in some part of you might end this hall of fame speech with that and that would be phenomenal but But yeah no I mean you know one of the the other things. I remember vividly. was you know the the rivalry ettelaat rivals with the NFC's but the one was Buddy Ryan and the eagles was telling US unbelievable. That was fish. I mean you know. And and he brought that To that rivalry because before then it was a very respectful..

"With us thus than I talk your colleague Nate Ryan the Bristol s weekend. All right, everybody talks about wanted to have the old Bristol back. What is the old Bristol? Because I thought we had great ratio last weekend. I mean, we're talking off air old. Bristol is Jimmy Johnson getting wrecked in turn one by Robby, Gordon and his car coming to arrest the inside of turn one getting out of his car. And when Robby Gordon comes back around the track in front of hundred and forty thousand fans, or you know, how many was back in the stands back then and TV and everybody an Robby Gordon, Jimmy Johnson saluted Robby Gordon with one finger. That's not something that Jim. Johnson would have done in most cases. And you know, I can't recall any other time that Jimmy Johnson did that, you know, outside of the car inside the car, maybe. But outside the car in front of everybody and Jimmy Johnson was that upset and again, that's that was what old Bristol was now. Again, I think they're still cases where guys can get upset. It's it's it's you know, what the two lanes there's a little bit. There's more maneuverability. I I mean, I think I never thought, you know, I I saw it used to be the all ran at the bottom, and they just knocked the heck out of each other to make a pass. And then when they they made the change the track and suddenly there had two lanes. It's only go three wide at times. And I was like I thought that was something I would never see Bristol. And I thought that was really cool to see I don't have as much of a problem of being too too wide. And and not being maybe to some people like the old Bristol. I don't I don't, you know. I don't I don't I didn't. I never went to bristle go see a demolition derby. I wanted to go see that. I'd go to I would go to the county fairgrounds. And and wait for the county fair to come in. And the the locals to run in the demolition derby. I came to see racing. And you know, old new whatever, you know. I think this. I think this past weekend race was entertaining. There was a lot of things happening especially early in the race. A lot of things that kind of happened at the end that kind of change things up. I think there were a lot of different dynamics out there. And it was it was a fascinating race to watch from from a lot of different angles. And you know, what I what I don't think. Anybody put anything? Anybody wrecked? Anybody? And so still pretty pretty darn good race in that sense. Lewis again off the year. We would talking the cars today are not like the cars used to be. You don't wanna cut down a tire. They're the front ends of the cars are much more sensitive. There's not as much built up back in the old days. You you could bangel day long. You know and move somebody out of the way you move someone out of the way today, you're gonna take self out at the same time. But just today it it's hurting somebody. You know, it sounds like you're gonna hurt me more than it's gonna hurt you. So you gotta be very careful there not not to put a put offender on somebody. But they didn't have to wreck them to get by it. So you had a lot of drama there. I thought it was interesting. We got out of the end of the race. And you know, you had the Pinski cars made a decision. They were running up front. They made a decision to come down at Pitt. And I thought it was an interesting decision with that few elapsed left. I wasn't sure that people are going to be you know, the that Kyle Busch Kurt Busch. Those guys.
