Marcus Ericsson wins 2022 Indianapolis 500 in a two-lap shootout after late red flag

"Survived a late restart to win his first Indianapolis 500 Ericsson grabbed the lead with ten laps to go then battled it out with Pato o'ward and Tony Kanaan after a Jimmy Johnson wreck led to a two lap shootout The only thing that could stop us was a caution and of course that caution came It's not supposed to be easy to win the 500 And those ten minutes sitting there in the pit lane during that red flag was some of the hardest ten minutes of my life probably A war had finished second in Kanaan was third Hole sitter Scott Dixon led nearly half of the 200 laps but a pit lane speeding penalty cost him a chance at the win

"All like new things right but i genuinely think that we are in a world where we're just going to accept price. Andy shambo for who. He is almost want him to do this stuff. Winning cures everything the further. We get away from the ryder cup. I think that that's going to dwindle and stuff's going to continue to happen. I think people were going to eventually get upset about it. Like they did in the past. That's my guess Like him saying his drivers socks Him as relief from fire ants him telling the cameraman. Like you can only put stuff out. That makes me look good. I think when that stuff gets six months twelve months away from the ryder cup dad. It's just going to add up and add up and we're going to be right back where we were. I don't think any of that stuff had anything to do with brooks kepco. That's my guess. We'll see who else will see. Only time will tell. You can't break future. it's fact caddy so. We had a very couple very surprising announcements. Just thomas and his k. Jimmy johnson separating. And jim bones. Kyle leaving tv Who caddied for. Nicholson obviously forever leaving. Tv to take the full time job on justin thomas. His bag very very surprising. The anybody saw that coming. Jt put out a statement himself in which he wrote in there. I one hundred percent did not fire him. Talking about jimmy johnson. That jimmy him at the ryder cup and said you know that he thought it was about time to go. Their separate ways has any Big time thoughts on this but But yeah interesting news. I guess yeah jimmy johnson. Another name like we said prior like michael jordan. Or do you think of it. You just think of the driver. When i you know i think of the dallas cowboys head football coach as well for me driver. Jimmy johnson don't know see. That's a different. That's got different levels to. It does have differences to very very famous guys. Who have to regain jimmy. Johnson was a little bit before. Like was before my time even when i was four or five. That's when he was in dallas on tv he is on tv. It is weird that i went straight to the to the driver but the driver one of the more famous drivers of all time jimmy johnson. Who do you think is more famous. That coach okay. That's right. I think the driver i but the coach is definitely more famous. I agree i don't know nascar's pretty fucking big. That's an interesting question. I think people on the we're going to be very passionate either way in all the places that nascar is big. Football is also massive true. So i think jimmy johnson headed trump's. I think you're right. Jimmy johns driver. You're not gonna find a place where nascar is big and football's not equally as big. That'd be a very interesting pocket of the world. Only place that the only person like there's only people that would know jimmy johnson. The coach and not jimmy johnson. The driver you know what i mean. Yeah okay. I'm surprised bones left. Tv i get it and i get that you know..

Who Should USC Hire as Its Next Coach?

"So i think. Usc should go get a nfl coach. I think name image likeness is going to be a little bit of an avalanche the next decade and these nfl coaches are not control freaks. They've dealt with players getting paid. They're very comfortable with it. They've got owners in the nfl. they're not in the. I have to control everything. Business i said doug peterson to me matt. Nagy if the if the bears fired him anthony lynn. All one playoff games in the nfl. All have a presence If you go. Look at usc miami and ucla three urban universities. If you look at the coaches that are had the most success. Pete carroll john robinson. Usc pro coaches chip kelly. Pro coaches getting it rolling dick for meal. Ucla pro coach. How 'bout miami. Last time they won. Butch davis dennis. Erickson jimmy johnson.

"How's that sound bill Still trying to get used to it really is it's very short period of time Going you know it happens so fast. Whirlwind got two shows on the weekend. You know now kind of soaking a little bit it's I think it's pretty special. Obviously being on live television is is sometimes Difficult enough even no matter. How many times you've done it because you're on live television. I mean what was going through your head. When david baker appeared all of a sudden bill you know i had absolutely no idea and the ironic part of it was. I sat down that morning with my wife for You know i. I talked about it. I don't think i'm gonna get in. And i'm okay with it. I almost put some closure on it and that was okay. You know and i came in. No one knows anything discussing in pretty professional. I appreciated them. Kind of like giving my space from it. All and I was getting ready to doing those in with Phil stems and talking about lamar jackson. Then next thing. I turn around you david baker and we all know what he stands for and And it was a lot of things to turn the process at the time. It's kinda why this is. This is the way. I i thought this was going to be going to get a call and says hey you know you're close but you think it and we don't find out on tuesday night or something because air on wednesday and Yeah it was almost surreal and You they ask you talk as speech. While they're trying to think about this one so it just kinda rambles. I got what i just said But it was pretty surreal moment. And you know every day you wake up it's just like wow during about as a kid and You know you never feel like you're worthy all the candidates that were there and it's so funny. I sat back and watched jimmy johnson at the same thing happened to him. The halftime of a game on on on got home. And i know exactly what he wants to be american. I had to put on a tweet. I i never thought about it. You know it really know that. He had to future hall of fame. Players watching bobby boucher and jimmy. Jimmy jimmy johnson. I don there in nineteen ninety seven ninety eight. Whatever was actually. I think since then re tweeted i said. We're talking about booby. Louis bobby boucher. He sang that. Taylor i go now. Mike McCarthy Compares Coaching Dak Prescott and Aaron Rodgers

"Mike mccarthy opened up about what he learned his pastime with aaron rodgers car relationship with dak prescott. It was all done in what was described as a quote relaxed environment for forty five minutes. Several cowboys reporters mccarthy also spoke of constantly of the cowboys situation. Saying obviously you wanna win games. But i'm building a championship program. Not just trying to win one. We're trying to win them. All so shannon. What do you make of this informal session with mccarthy skew say sometime why why would you tweet that or why would you go to social media why you know skill. I'll believe mike mccarthy believe he's not the coach of the green bay packers because they're rogers wanted him fired. I believe that's what scale with. Someone says oh he. The clinic was that he weird weird he. He's a very intelligent guy. well he the guy. That's very condescending. That thinks he knows more than you and he talks down to people and why that will be going back. Guess what they get this and go back. Aaron rodgers aaron. Did you hear what might say. Yup look out i play. I don't know how many how many of these. Tom lehrer do coach landry. How many did jimmy. Johnson do sit down interview. What is this your the hand you. The head coach of the dallas cowboys cared about no relationship. They won't you there to win game. They will to be free. They come into the house to eat. You're not sleeping anybody's house. Nobody wanna have no drink with you. They jones to win football game. Jerry jones causley talks about his football mortality and what he would be willing to do to hold their trophy one more time. And you're talking about that. I got a great relationship with that. I'm building a championship program. You ain't alabama championship program. Wins have shifted three. You got exactly what you're looking for because you for three years water jason gear dub. That may eight eight. Oh jason eight you wanted to go and now you've got somebody

"I was like what a million dollars worth of wrecked racecars for jimmy johnson. Yeah that's crazy. And then of course. The guy who won was catapulted through the air on lap. Four right the. That was a wild race. My goodness just throw new nose cone on it. It'll be fine. Yeah sure enough. That's why you don't ever quit in the sport though. Yeah whether it'd be nascar indycar if you have a chance to get back on track or you have a chance to make a repair or you're just not out of it until you're actually out of it and that was the prime example. I don't know the exact rules at indycar. But i think jimmy johnson was the reason they got pulled from the race because it was during a red flag situation there crew was kind of size and everything up and he's like diving in the cockpit grabbing stuff. Well he's diving in the cockpit grabbing stuff. They're actually putting their hands and stuff on pieces in the rear suspension areas while trying to figure out what's going on but you're not allowed to touch right man. Jimmy is pulling out new nose cones to put in front of the so. It's ready to go and everything. Yeah yeah that was That was wild. So i think he didn't understand the rules. Were different or were the same as nascar because these are all of these guys touch the car. I'm gonna get things going to write and That was pretty wild like well. Apparently the rules are the same as mass car. So that course was absolutely crazy. When they the the i ride along through the course with one car i was like how are they going to and they were going like three wide. Sometimes yeah that was. Just absolutely bonkers. That was insane. It'll be interesting to see if they do that course again next season. If it's that crazy. Yeah i'm sure. We'll have to make some adjustments to make it a little easier to drive in certain situations throughout the race but yeah that was that was a race. That was fun to watch for. Sure i stuck around because you know nascar was promoting it. I'm like oh that sounds interesting. And and then have the thing you've never heard of is emergency divers because they're racing on a bridge and it's one of those things were probably not going to need them. Bright have them race. Cars find themselves in places they shouldn't be so it's yeah do and i would imagine if you're flying off of a bridge in and hitting a body of water. I think that's gonna knock you out pretty good so you're probably get somebody to save you at that point ever diver Coming up next. We've got double truck series winner austin hill two weeks in a row. He has visited victory lane races. It was multiple weeks between them. Well yeah because they have months off between races but you know what i mean to race winner in a row austin hill next on.

"You idiot. Get out run for your life. Spend your money on a beach somewhere. I wouldn't use those words. I i I just talked to two. I mean talking about how difficult it was going to bait. Were any of those offers. Jimmy in any way tempting of over all the years was jimmy ever close to coming back or once. You finish you finish Went travel finished. I was finished. I realize feel my sammy's that's staying away from our family There was nothing that was going to get me back. Can you explain to us our relate. Your relationship with troy aikman because you talk about different kinds of love and i see love their. Yeah yeah troy well. Of course choice home when he was a sophomore in high school and So i known him for a long long time. We had some tension When i went to dallas. Because know i had steve walls and i had to walk to fence. I knew that choi was my god. But i couldn't feel outwardly. Say that because i wanted to trade state. Walsh and i ended up getting a one two and three perceive but after traded steve i was able to bond with troy and we have built up a really great relationship. He's a great friend tax and obviously it was a great player. He helped us win. Super bowl but I think my value to him right now as what i look at him but he's a better friend that he was great player. I love that you still remember jimmy. I got a one two to three. For steve walsh. Just i love that you. Just i remember those trades because they were important to win. And what are your favorite of those. Give me a couple of your. The the the the the trades that you remember i i got away with. I got away with one there. Well moving up to get emmett smith You know. I mean up a three or four spots to get him. You know that was big I was able to sign russell. Maryland oak forest source. Take money But i worked out a deal to where we can take a number one. So i got who hated to fill in with defense The trade charles. Haley was huge He helped us win. Half the cowboys win. Three super bowls. Taking zach thomas into fifth round thinking. You know i. I knew i wanted to jason taylor and sam medicine And i'm really working in the second round. And so i was able to take sam madison and then wait till the third move up. Get jason so there's some of the better moves made. Is there one above all others that stands out as oh man. I screwed that one up. Oh yeah actually Not not the making the trade. I could've made a trade. It would've taken. It would've taken my entire draft forward but I could've made a trade to move up to cite many fact. I talked to peyton archie about it this weekend. Tell us more about that. I wanna hear some more of these details. Well that's all the details on. It can give you much already. All right jimmy. It is really nice to see. Honestly i told you this before. And i'll tell the audience this i couldn't have imagined many years ago. I've learned a lot from this man. I could not have imagined when i was walking across his green tree practice field one day just at the university of miami as a student and kicked me off his field. He ran over in those tight orange shorts way to type way too short and told me to get off the field. I would learn from him. I i would make him mad on occasion and then years later when i drive back from the keys you know i have a beer with him at that wonderful guest house on that wonderful property. I just could never have imagined that all of this stuff would have happened so that you would have been so much softer so much kinder late in life because 'cause football and live talked to so many things dan the next time you hear of someone that played for an undefeated national championship in college. That coach to an undefeated national champion in college who won act act superbowls and then the broadcasting hall of fame If you hear of anybody done all those things give me a call and the football now the football hall of fame. I can't believe jimmy one of the things to take. I forgot to ask you take me through. How you in. Jerry repaired some of this. I never thought. I would see the day where you guys would stop the stupid stuff and the petty stuff and be like all right enough. We're old enough now. Just honor me the way. I deserve to be honored. Well i i think i think everything's fine but like i said on the show he was talking about doing it and i came out. Is he going to do it. Well live so. Let's wait and see all right fair enough. It's not quite it's not quite prepared yet and you still don't trust the larger point you're not you're an and with good reason and with good reason. Trust him because what happened. There was ethically stupid. You should have been the coach of the cowboys. Whatever i'm happy now. Dan good talking to you jimmy. Thanks for catching up. Thanks for making the time. Okay thank you good talking with you too..

"Talking about one of the most embarrassing movie scenes in the history of his life. I go back to my trailer. To get my robe. And i look on my bed and there's three paint socks one is eighteen inches long one is about twelve inches long and one is about four inches long. And i'm looking and i'm going. You got to be kidding me. I gotta pick one of these and put on my penis and all at holy cow. Now if i take the big ones everybody in the world knows that just no way that that's possible. I got horses. That couldn't feel that thing out. So i said if i take the little one. They're going to laugh at me because it's not very long and i know the wardrobe people are going to gather around ago. Which one did you go with. Obviously that went with the middle one. Not put that stupid thing on. I got up there to do the scenes. And i had a penis on. And i've never been more uncomfortable in. I live well. You'll meet a finish that story. 'cause i've i've heard this story many times and told him many times but there's a aftermath of that was doing the scene from failure to launch and they had the one scene where he fits around from the aquarium and matthew mcconaughey is supposed to be startled and so they read one ran the scene. The director looked at matthew and he says no. I want you know good reaction when when he whips around and so they did it again. Matthew mcconaughey still didn't have that sorta look so terry says hey i'll give him a startled. Look he took the sock off and who after around yes going. Hey says oh my. That was all rap. Terry bradshaw bringing up the best actor in matthew mcconaughey. I want to. I want to cover with you jimmy. I've never asked you this. Because i think this was the period of greatest jimmy johnson. I don't give a bleep. You were doing advertisements for penis enhancers. And i'm like jimmy has really let go. He's like i. I don't care what anybody thinks. Not the jabber cared what people thought very much actually terry the one that gave me that commercial. They first approach terry to do it and he was telling me about it and he. I just think bring myself to doing it. Did give me and net. chris. Mccall hey i'll be. I'll be a spokesman. I'm ready. You have done. You have late in life. You've evolved with hobbies right you have kept. I've talked to you about wayne. High zanga the late owner of the dolphins and l. quality time left. You said he would send you jetskis and remind you to enjoy the little things late in life. You've seen here. That bobby bowden passed away here recently. And i don't know can those things move you more these days jimmy than they used to be able to get to you. Well you know i i. It's a different lifestyle now and you know i didn't know bobby bowden. Well you know. Obviously we continue against one another but such a great man you know not only a great football coach but just a great band someone that we all are and and then you wayne highs get the same thing you know really wanting to buy the spending of ever known in my life But he told me he said you know quality time well You know just you know. Don't don't wait until it's too late when you got plenty of money but you can't enjoy it because you're too old and they said you know they sure and check out quality time left so that really made an impact on my life. One of the stories that can be told now. Jimmy all these years later about your last year with the dolphins and wear wayne high zanga was helpful to you because you were grieving. The loss of your mother. Yep and then you know wayne Let me use jet went to mother's funeral still during the season and it hit me pretty hard as you know. And and. That's when i realized i i've really got to slow down and i i. I gotta take some time for my family. Because just like i said you know at my yeah hall of fame induction speech yeah. That's you know. Appreciate the people you love because there's gonna come a day that you're not gonna be able to do that. How many teams. Since jimmy have tried to persuade you to come back and lead their franchise. Oh danielle did there for a long. I'll quite a few teams. It came down to check. I wanted to go back into coaching. You know back when. Tom benson and bob mcnair. And you know. Jeffrey lurie. And you know dean spanos. Ao been down here. But then there was a period that it wasn't coaching you. They wanted me to come back either as a general manager or a consultant As for the general manager but now now it is all they come down vice. In fact i'm going to get playing. Go up to jacksonville Wednesday they're gonna they're gonna come down. Pick me up. And i'm gonna go watch practice and does it with urban and probably talked to team but Yeah so now. it's more of consulting down from the keys actually working twelve months out of the year ready to do that no matter how much they pay you. Leave the keys for jacksonville. No matter how private how many private planes they send them surprised. You're still doing that instead. I would suspect that you'd rather be on the boat in the morning. Yeah but i'm doing it. As a favorite urban urban has been down here. We've known each other. I talk him and his son. Nate fishing back ten years ago. He worked with us at fox. And you know. I have talked to him. Cut you you time. When he's getting ready to you know eight turn down texas and then again when he ended up taking the jacksonville job. So i'm doing it as a favorite for urban. What did you tell him about turning down texas and the taking the jacksonville job. What is the advice of a guy who has been the biggest and the best in both in both world. Well yeah we just talked about you know those strains of recruiting and one thing another and actually we actually compare to you. Know going into professional football as well and I i did actually give him my. You know my Feeling about what he should do. I just Talked to him about the pros and cons of both positions. So what would be the conundrum on something like texas. Is it not the greatest of the program. I'm sure they would have paid him more money than than any college coach was being paid. I i i don't think he is. I don't think saw the tat like That jacksonville kissing and You know. I think he wanted to challenge a professional football He's -ccomplish everything. Acheived -ccomplish intelligible and so even challenge professional football. You didn't dare council him. Don't do it anymore.

"I didn't know them. You know three of them that had applied for the job. Found out five minutes before i got there that they did not get the job and instead he this stranger from oklahoma state. Yeah yeah that was a little difficult and then you know. I pretty well except that you know we were gonna make through that season somehow and You know it it eventually at the end of the year But i was able to correct that. And so the worst time Was either you know at the end of the first year or of course. The penn state game where did the workshop of coaching. I've ever done in my life. You've say that all the time like you haven't forgiven yourself you really. Do you say the worst job. Coaching because of how much better you guys were than that penn state team and it was six turnover seven turnover to something right right and yeah. I should have prevented dance. And you know head. I make different decisions. Maybe the better team would won and that would have been university miami and there's been another national championship and another undefeated season. You don't have a greater regret than that one do you professionally. No no there's nothing nothing close That that was The worst game that That i was ever involved in and Most disappointing game. That i was involved. And you know then they probably made me a better coach After that It was full throttle After that my my foot never left the pedal I i never took a chance and you know regardless who. We were playing a bad team. A good team. I really didn't pay attention to it. I prepare our team as well as i could prepare them And we tried to beat him as bad as we could beat them. I i never. I never took a chance after that ballgame. You got criticized for that too though you got criticized for running up the score. Was that before the fiesta bowl. Where notre dame and they they ran television they were owning television. And you were criticized because your third stringer blocked a punt. And and you may jerry foul slip ban I'll take criticism for running up the score anytime rather than be on the other side and having scored run up. What were the best and most emotional parts of the weekend for you jimmy. Because i imagine your vantage point now is something that fills you with great gratitude and you can look back nostalgically and lovingly at all the things that that your leadership birth. I just got off the phone with terry bradshaw and I told him i said that. The worst part of the weekend was. When i got there i had a four and a half hours signing autographs That and plus i. I did go to to Party functions were they. Were you know. Probably five or six hundred people in each one of them and i ended up signing autographs and taking pictures and the reason why it was the worst because there were people in the room that i hadn't seen in twenty five years and i wanted to spend time with them and talk to them but i couldn't talk to him because i spent the whole time signing autographs and taking pictures so that was the worst side the best time we had three different days and tonight after this function There was my two sons and their their wives. My daughter-in-law's my wife rhonda and her girlfriend. They want that his wife. Tony wise north turner. His wife enrich their ripple. Just our group we we got together. We had lunch. We had drinks. We tell stories we laugh. We cut up just had a great great time But we did that on three different occasions and that was the best part of the whole weekend. Those are the lifelong friends right. That football gave you those. That's that's your crew from the miami days. That's that's the crew that started with me at the back university of pittsburgh oklahoma state university of miami. You know dallas cowboys. Some of the miami dolphins That's been my crew for a long long time. We had some great stories stories. And and you talk about love. You know they can't love. I love you know and and obviously having my two sons and my wife there to be part of it was a special special to have. It has been really cool to watch the way your love for. Terry bradshaw has grown the idea that you can have a friend like that and i can't. What's that conversation like when you're talking to him you're just reliving the weekend again because you guys like i mean you don't have a better friend than that right it chris. And by the way kristen and felicia he was right. They were both right there with their respect. For the way in nick kristen rand. he rode in convertible in the parade with me So yeah nick christian and terry bradshaw to my two best friends and I had a great time. you know. Of course there is a piece of work and people people really. Some can't understand how the two of us so close But when it's just the two of us we have some great great talks and we laugh and cut up. We're really enjoy one another jimmy. It is hard to understand because they're looking at the person you used to be. I think and that they're not looking at the person who has an adult. Made a friend in the new version of yourself to terry bradshaw. No the previous incarnation of you. Oh jerry talked about it all the time. In fact troy. Aikman was on that whole that little group as well and troy interior of talked about it about how i am different. But you know like i tell troy and like i told terry back then. It was my responsibility to get team ready to play a bill ballot. Check ahead of this conversation after you want the first super bowl i said you know you're the only guys got hammered. You know if you're gonna win your second one which he did anyone many meeting more Said you know really those especially in pro. Football assistant coach is getting to be trained with the players. Some of them are about the same age even younger than some of the players. And if you don't if you don't watch it after you've had success they'll let 'em slack remember my my great running back coach joel brodsky. Who i love to. Yeah so he's not with us anymore. After emmett smith held out one year for two weeks. we getting ready for the third game of the season. And joe which is wearing this backup running back. Derrick classic out and it wasn't getting any reps i say joe get emmett in. They're getting getting ready to play. He said oh coach. he's a veteran. he'll be ready on sunday. Which didn't sit well me. You know you can't let these veterans latte. And i said so bella check and said hey. You're the only got the hammer. You can't just rely on your assistance. Because at times they'll let them slat. I couldn't led our players slapped. i couldn't ever let him slide to where we would have been state type game. I wanted to cover all the bases. I can't believe i did not know that about you. Jimmy that that basically you became the unbearable hard ass pusher past the limits because of the shame and embarrassment of i cost the better team. The game in the fiesta bowl. It is a loss that will haunt me the rest of my life. You're you're right. On target dan and it just a for instance You know there before one of the super bowl. We already had to play off. You know sewed up and we played at washington and we've flopped around. You just played so poorly. Turn the ball over and on the plane going back to dallas They start serve the food and said no. You're not serving food. I said they don't deserve beat. I'd say so. I told the flight attendants to set back down and not serve food. Well obviously the players really upset with me but you know once that came into my office the next more. He's jimmy say you know. Don't you think you're a little hard. Oh we already got. The playoffs sewed up. And i said when they lose out weren't hurt. I don't care if they're mad at me. I don't care what they think of me. I want call some emotion with them. I don't want him to accept losing if they're the ones ballgame. Hey you know no-holds-barred jake do whatever the hell they wanted to know but if they lose i want him to hurt and i'm made them hurt and i made a mad mike grind. Do you have back there a sound. "L. dot com code. Dan for an extra three months. Free lebatardshow fall the raindrops. Relax and drops and gone drops what array that would be stugatz standing outside with my mouth open why i fall the rain drops. Roulet jobson gumdrops rain. That would be this easy donlevatar. Show with these two guys harry you. Oh i'm happy to hear your voice happy for you this weekend. I it was. It was good to see you so emotional and moved. And i've told you before. I think that i've i've admired the man that you've become after football well. It was a good It was a good weekend and for my family was very busy you know they. They wrote me pretty hard as far as old autographs pictures and what they other but well. We're at the time. I wanted to tell people your story jimmy. I think that they know it. But i'm fascinated. Almost i think most despite all the success that you seem to be a lot happier after football after coaching football than you were wild. Coaching football will God i think that's true. Dan i used to say the happiest time in my life. The most fun was my five years at University of miami. I love you. Know living in south florida you know. Of course we had tremendous success And it was just a fun fun time but the most fun time in my life is right now. I'm closer to my family than i've ever been am Still involved with football with fox. Nfl sunday and plus living in the florida keys. How can you get any better. I don't know that. I could have imagined though. Jimmy the the monster that football sort of major so to be a titan to be a successful leader. I couldn't have imagined jimmy johnson who what is A present and loving dad. It would have been hard for you to imagine too. I imagine yeah it and daniel hours that i was working in really the attention and the stress that was under coaching working around the clock every day of the year And never taking time off for my family It really Cause some problems You know my youngest son struggled You know when. I wasn't there and and you know really i wasn't as close to my family is what i should have been and and so even though i hit tremendous tremendous success. You know in football. I didn't have tremendous success with my family. And so you know pulling back and now. I'm still involved with football. But yeah my two sons and my daughter-in-law's I mean in in rhonda. We are all as close as close. Couldn't be and we have fun with each other and it's it's a different lifestyle. Now i love to hear a jimmy. And i'm curious if i can ask you this without being invasive but you say it caused some problems as if you're not being present as a father because your your sons struggles with addictions have been public. And the work. He does to help others with addiction. Now has been public. Do you blame yourself for anything. That happened there because you weren't around well. I don't know that. I blame myself but you know i i really feel like had been there. More for him Maybe we could have prevented some of those problems and You know. I didn't even realize him until he was just so far down that it was difficult to turn him around. So you know. Maybe i to you know maybe nipped in the bud before it got to be a problem. Where and how did jimmy. Johnson learned to tell his sons that he loved them. Because that was something i remember. I wrote a lot of profiles about you and did a lot of reporting and you are a bit of a mercenary robot football leader. Ceo chewing glass all the time Where did you learn how to do some of that stuff. Well dan and of course. A lot of people can relate to this 'cause there's a lot of people out there that got family members or friends or people that are close to that struggle with addiction Laying in bed at night just crying. My eyes out saying to myself i i would give any amount of money in the world is somehow some way i knew how to correct the problem That's when i realize if things ever got better he was going to know that. I love and can you look back on your university of miami days and just take us through some of that stuff that made it your best experience in in football really right because it was your most. I don't understand why you always said that. It was more joyous than winning with the dallas cowboys. Well really i think the relationship i had with the players you know in college football and professional footballer so different The length to the season the financial situation with professional players agents College football the head coach is more of a mentor and in some ways a substitute father figure You spend a tremendous amount of time counseling players. you know. They're young kids you know. They've left home for the first time in their life. You know they're out on their own you know. They've got to take the responsibility of of really. You know gauging their time Getting up in the morning going to class getting an education daily the girlfriend dealing with being away from home so the head coach really spends a tremendous amount of time with the individuals. You know the young kids making sure they're on the right path and I like that. I really enjoyed it. Especially since you know. We had so many inner city kids you know. When i went to miami you know there was just slightly over. Fifty percent of them graduated. You know about adding you know. So academic support system counselors and mandatory study hall and mandatory crisis during the way close to ninety percent graduate and that number is state about the same ever since i left so i took a lot of pride in that. And you know i. I really enjoyed the relationship ahead with the players and especially players that have come from you know maybe sparse means income from difficult backgrounds and professional football. You're dealing with agents and they're playing for the money. It's a professional sport. And so you don't have that relationship with the players you know. So that's why it was really different. It's interesting to hear you say that jimmy because you really did connect in that space with black players. You had a unique vantage point on the good work that you were doing even as you you had to have been going crazy feeling everything around. You was totally missing misunderstood because of what you're seeing in those kids what they were seeing in those kids and then it became about a handful of arrests. And the you know the catholics versus convicts but you you've got a bunch of kids out there that that's as close as you've been loving players right. You didn't love your players in the pros like that. Well i don't know the looks up a hard word to find to be honest with you. I think you have different kinds of love Now you have for your family you have love for your wife. You have love for people you deal with. You have love for friends. And i think all of them are different. Can you take us through what you've viewed as your worst time at miami like when you recall it. It was the happiest time that you had. But what didn't feel like that. Well you know that first year was difficult. I to the way i accepted the job is always going to retain the previous staff and those staff members did not know me. They did not my style. i didn't know them. You know three of them that had applied for the job. Found out five minutes before i got there that they did not.

"Great name. It is a very pretty mascot. it's purple and it. Has these like pretty jewel tones on its neck. Caller thing mike. What do you call that. You're triceratops expert. Romanek next sounds good for me also We're still doing this with lewis. Brinson h- that was learning. He's still around. He's been on fire. He's having been really giving like the best stretch of his career right now. Okay what's his batting average. Was what numbers if we finally win this trade. Let's not get crazy. I thought i did think billy the last time that we had talked about lewis brinson. He is one option away from them no longer being able to option him he either plays well now or they will have to keep him or get rid of him at the major league level. Correct because he's been down like twelve times since it feels like but he's crushing it now. Dan and i'm pretty sure he's doing better than yellowish this year. Sell trade one yelich. By the way i mean i don't wanna say it but say i think it's best is behind bust but i'm glad we got out of that contract. I think he's done. I was surprised to see how bad he's been this year. And they're good. Yes you got said. Something's bruin in milwaukee yesterday during the survey ships and looked at the standings and he was right you began. You began a sentence with the phrase back when i was a fan of baseball. I feel like you're getting kind of lord back in ever. So i believe a playoff some fun playoff games with some really good baseball teams because there are a lot of really good baseball teams this year that they might be able to lure you back in. I'm back in on baseball but still with old timey names i'm playing. Mlb the show one game at day and holy cow right now. Tony gwynn twelve games into the season has five seventeen batting average for me. I'm going to blow the doors off of four hundred. I'm going for five on this. Bret saberhagen had a complete game. Shutout for me and chris. Carpenter had a game with fifteen strikeouts. I love this game one game a day. So are you like doing a full season. And you're like taking days off when you actually had a day off the cuff. Well but i have the miners to double check on the system. The louisville bats aren't gonna run themselves. "Nine with it. of course. Oh of course. I've got a tweet here from somebody. Please do actual research on the colorado fan mascot controversy instead of telling possible lies and that is an absolutely correct second. Guess but what possible research is that you wanted me to do lewis. Brinson said that he watched the video fifty times especially after it was reported awkwardly. I might add ken rosenthal. I can't imagine how awkward all that was for him that cameraman and the rockies in a fan say that when lewis brinson was batting for the marlins and it sounded like a fan was yelling. The n word at him. The fan was actually yelling to the rockies mascot dinger and i saw that happen i'm like that is the one place in twenty twenty one or something funny can happen around all of this and i'm listening to it again and again and i'm like that still doesn't sound like dinger. And why was that guy so zealous about getting a hold of the mascot hold up. Have you seen dinger. I have purple. And i believe horned right. It's a triceratops. It's one of the best mascots and all the sports if you had. When i was a fan of baseball i would have. Mlb extra innings just to watch rockies games because dinger would sit behind home plate and not move for three innings just. The dead cold is a triceratops with purple skin. Looking right back at me. No movement and i was thinking how can a pitcher pitch under these conditions is so distracting lazy sedated. What was happening. There was it a mascot that was just sort of a bum. That wasn't working hard very clearly going for something it was. It was very distracting and it automatically made dinger my favorite mascot and i thought it was just a matter of time before dinger would rise national prominence. However i did not have it going this way. Can we examine sort of the marketing meeting and the public relations staff gathering with the rockies. And this was something that made its way viral. Because you have the confluence of events of what sounds like an otherwise really quiet ballpark and the unmistakable yelling it sounded like the unmistakable yelling again and again of the n. word and if you want to look at this closely i ask you to consider the odds given how few black players there are in baseball that that fan would get wrapped up in that controversy right then given that it had to be a black guy batting for us to make the parallels of because you heard the echoing of it again and again and it sounded and it still sounds it. Sounds like the n word even after you know even after you have the information on dinger and a mascot and dinosaur it still sounds like ann. Lewis brinson insane. I hear what everyone saying. And i didn't hear it when it was happening. But i keep listening to the video and it sounds to me like that's the n. Word the third time. I heard it. I heard dinger. I think this is one of those laurel or yanni type of things where it's just super confusing. I went into it thinking. Wow this is going to be meaty and sad but also having told you about my previous connection at dinner. I was really hopeful that someone felt as passionately as i did about the purple mascot. And someone did. You're saying. I could not have foreseen this pivot and again i tell you tweeter that. This is the correct criticism. Please do actual research on the colorado fan mascot controversy instead of telling possible lies. hold up. this is an easy thing. Armchair quarterback surp- or ma'am what research did you do on this. Because i would like to know. Because i've done plenty. Triceratops fossils have been found in colorado and that's why dinger is the colorado rockies mascot what have you done he was very or she was very pleased to get a colorado rocky statement that exonerated the one percent. It's not like we jump to that conclusion. Without any previous information about what happens sometimes around black athletes and sports. It's not like we. We just heard it and didn't have any particular reasons to jump to that conclusion. But you said the words sad in meaty story. i simply didn't have it pivoting that fast into funny it is funny. It's a funny story and too many are afraid to say it. There's a great tweet from someone who put a fake script from curb your enthusiasm. Says larry david colon. I can't believe. I let you susie talked me into going to this game the rockies in august come on jeff colon larry have some fun. Relax okay look. There's the mascot larry. Oh oh this guy. I've got some words for this guy. Hey hey you yeah you dinger. I thought it was brock meyer episode. I thought comedy writers could have written something like that and it wouldn't have been as funny as just the mascots photo coming up on the screen for everyone being introduced to that mascot once they're introduced to that mascot through this story good mascot ask. There's something about dinger now. The name why. I just i don't i don't think it's that. Close the police. Did you think dinner was dangerous. Were yeah it's it's dangerous when it's eight. Look god bless her heart. And i'm sure it was influenced by the controversy out there. Twenty collins had a faux pas on sportscenter. Doing a highlight saying dinger. It's it's close. It's close enough. That if you mess up one syllable. You're all of a sudden embroiled in a controversy that you didn't mean to be billy can you please put it. That is some real armchair quarterbacking from you right there. At lebatardshow thing tony collins meant to say the word put on the poll please should the rockies changed the name of their mascot to bill at lebatardshow. Boy chris ceratops just call it. Sarah loom.

"Jimmy johnson in need selects troy aikman huge honor. Yeah it's only appropriate. That the he would be the guy in troyes is obviously such a a product of the coach and tree. I mean i in earth both chose jerry to present them. Troy chose north turner. You know what. I mean so like troy troy has always been there and so it is very cool when i think about it. I always thought of michael irvin was really humid platform at miami. I thought well maybe if he did selects them from franchise it was part of the nineties dynasty. Maybe it'd be michael irvin but again troy. Aikman can't go wrong with that dude it may. He's probably mel. Knocked out now. And i mean what a what a win for fox because you know the pro football hall of fame games on fox. They have troy from fox presenting jimmy from fox. Nice we're going to be fox really. I think it's kind of interesting the way they did it. You know thursday night or thursday night Game and not a saturday game because they undercut because the induction is on saturday to stop. It's kind of interesting the way they did it. So they flip that like in five years ago because they used to do the game on sunday address ceremony but the field was a disaster because they have the ceremony on the field and it gets all beat up because everybody so like. That's how they started putting the game before it but yeah it will be cool. Four preseason games with ask next week tony. We're going to have a football game to talk about and react to. Are you excited i am. It'd be excellency what the what the top topics will be and what would be breaking now mouth. Whatever they are we will break down. That's the most important thing correct. We have football oklahoma. So jealous of and they had to join the sec. School sort of deal whatever. Tony have a great week. Everybody have a great week. We'll see next week. This was the seven five. "Because you had something to do with that so i think that's the biggest compliment that all the players can have. And this be proud of a man so deserving this one at the pro pro football team. Yeah i mean it is amazing. How other people on the staff have become legendary in their own right. We talked about joe avezzano. Obviously dave wanstead north turner. Who's had an incredible career afterwards. Rich darren paul. Jimmy's guy continues obviously Be the goat. I just you know it's cool. I mean it's it's really really exciting to see how this is all gonna unfold. Obviously it's been a long time coming Obviously in general. But just what the fact that we've had to wait an entire year because of kovin and whatnot I'm really excited to see what he has to say I i have to imagine he'll be somewhat emotional You know and i just. I don't know this really cool moment as a dallas cowboys fan like you know it does feel and i feel like it does get lost and you said that jimmy jimmy re catapulted. The brand of the dallas cowboys and jerry has done an incredible job. And i. it's about jerry. But i mean he's obviously done an amazing job at at fortifying the brand but people forget that when when you guys got there like it was not glitzy and glamorous like yes they. They were america's team but they were not this world dominant brand at the time. I mean they hit. They had fallen off. Kind of feels like I have you seen the new space jam. I haven't have you seen the new one. No i i don't know watch it. I hear it's good but it's because you sound like you've seen the original go right obviously a lot of people that they wanna and the old one instead. It's it's kind of jimmy. You just can't immolate and write a prequel not a prequel world. But do sequel to so good original when jordan. I gets to the gym with all the looney tunes. And it's like this piece of crap and joins like this is the jim and they're like. Oh all needs is a little spit shine. Then they all start like spitting in at whenever and then then. It's like beautiful and glamorous. If feels like jimmy gave the cowboys a spit shot. You know what i mean like. And then as soon as he was done laughed at me. And all of a sudden this is beautiful diamond in the nfl y'all whereas spit-shine but like kind of like that was his approach in some ways. Yeah and i think would. Also when i watch and give a speech i think will will be able to relive those moments again. Relive live twenty five years along expensive. He's been out of coach since he'd led us at super bowl. Would be able to relive those moments and really. It's almost like we're putting on our shoulders and celebrate because what he was able to accomplish so i think that that's something will be interesting. I really what he's going to say. I think it'll be pretty epic to build a watch. That and i'm excited to see it. It's gonna be a great celebration. I don't know if i'm going to be able to go or not. Because i think that it's one of those deals that that'll be hard to around it and embrace it. Because there's so much stuff going on But i think we are going to try to have something back in dallas where we can all declare get together and celebrate it where it's more intimate that sets that kicks ass like that. I guarantee like every dallas cowboys fan thinks that's the coolest thing ever that y'all still get together break. Bread drink water shirley and You know just just tell stories water. Tequila. i mean i have you. Are you heineken. Guy like did you. Were you ever inspired to take up heineken. because jimi specific i guarantee you. There is a dallas cowboys. fan somewhere. That drinks. heineken is gross. It is because jimmy. Johnson is a heineken guy. You know what. I never did. Inevitably really disciplined a pattern myself after jimmy johnson especially when it comes to beer because to me that there's not really a beer i don't like but it's a good beer but i think it's the way heat the whole tag with it. The hines and the nachos and everything and you know we could do three our podcast stories about jimmy man. I could sit and rattle off so many of these stories but know. That's the uniqueness of it made everyone has to have a story has to have how they got there and how this thing off formulated and the the store at indian and i just think it's a great end store to this book of by jimmy. Johnson finally getting pro football Hopefully the ring bottom will follow that Shortly but it's kind of like what troy said it's like i don't really think that he cares about the ringer. Bonnard morrison hall of fame. Pro football fame. And so this is something that i this is the in my book. This is into everything as far as my football career. And so that's the thing. I'm excited about our j. My last question. And then we'll wrap up good outta here. Obviously is jimmy's choice. But he picked troy to present him. I know he has terry bradshaw like he has a fleet of people that are part of it. Whatever but betrays the one presenting him if you could have picked his presenter and that's a weird question but would you have picked troy. Is that the person that you because you've talked so much about. How troy was y'alls quarterback and what he meant to you guys. I have to believe that for all of you. It feels right. That troy is the one presenting fills right. But i i gotta be honest fries. It'd be some some osa. Turn not the troy's not close rank So i thought maybe it would be maybe in his one of his family members or someone like that. But i just thanked him. Trower really close. I think that they understand the i. Guess the procession of them. Not if you watch the football life you watch choice story You know the time that he was you know when we got our asses kicked by the detroit. Lions game steve. Burr line was a quarterback. And you know choi was was was fine with his name he wanted to play. But then you fast forward in will. It did surprising but it doesn't mean it makes a lotta sense. You know because those guys came in together You know they. They both were on the same wavelength. They both like structure. They'd it's black and white that You mentioned you mentioned stolen Trailer was a in some way stoke in a good way because he kind of had that persona were. It's all business. And this is how. I'm gonna motivate so they had similar personalities. If you will so. I think yeah i think if anyone you would you would select to present you or i understand. Terry's someone can present a man and he's done an introduction on video that he did that. Yeah it makes a lotta sense because those guys built this name Yet to have everything else to go along with it. But they've been through a lot and they spend a lot of time together And they keep. They kept entrusts for a long time and You know to mater. There are a lot of life so it makes a of sense that he would do that. Not as bad way. I decided choice. I'd love troy choice. he's a. he's a great teammate. And he's a he's a great friend so it's a huge honour. And could you imagine of all people that either you know anyone would select the presentiment hall of fame you got picked and i think that's what troy said he said look. It's one of the biggest honors. I've ever got billed to be part of that celebration and think about all the.

"Com. You hear so often in sports. I was gonna say the nfl but like people say like you know. I just wanna win like winnings all matters like winnings. The most important thing like one of the coolest things that tom brady says i mean only tom brady because this is you know when he's asked what his favorite super bowl ring is. He says the next one right like that's that's the one i'm i wanted. Just i'm obsessed with winning. And that's like jimmy was kind of the first cut of people like that feels like an in at least a long time because jimmy i feel like was the introduction of the nfl to a new era because every great head coach to that point in time had been this really stoic reserved personality. Obviously vince lombardi. Tom landry chuck knoll. Bill walsh people kept close to the vest. And here's jimmy. You know chugging. Heinekens adhere cusses. Out and bragging about you know what i mean. We're in short shorts and and having polished hair And one of the other stories. I want to ask about because i know you guys all talk bob sturm until difference just stories about jimmy kind of the person and then the todd archers piece about how about them cowboys which was after the ninety two title game. But i- story that. I i i honestly feel like doesn't get talked about enough. Was the guarantee in ninety three. And i've never asked you this before but like what was that like. How did you find out Just for for younger fans like we kind of joked about early You guys are going into the title game and ninety three against the forty niners. This time at texas stadium and jimmy. You know the legend is. He's listening to local sports. Talk radio driving dinner And just listen ended. People talk about life man. You know it's going to be a close game. You know the forty niners really going to hang with the cowboys. Beat him and said he just says like this is stupid. Any calls in in intel's them. You know guarantees. We're gonna win the game. And i mean says you know you could put it in three inch bald letters. You know on on the front of the paper and they do well. What all that like. Did you get a copy of the paper. Like i mean. What was your experience at that story like. Well first of all.

"If you go to watch damp it's a place but to the point received a best is I'm not gonna lie to you You know isn't arab. Were point is that you can't get your back. It was almost like a twofold the get your life. Back is trying to campus o. R. c. had to really just kinda retrain yourself to get ready for the regular season game but you know i always thought the best. The best part preseason as ending. Obviously you need the reps. And i've mentioned this before you have to get your body acclimated to the this calorie of it but It's a necessary evil. I think it's more. Rj for valuation of younger players. And people you know players are maybe what make roster but other than that. It's a pointed at times. You think it's senseless but reason why they have preceded gains because it's tv revenue and people watch it and they love it that's true Tv revenues all the rage in all levels of football especially college. Football right now but It is speaking of tv. I cut the cord but that's a whole different subject. We can talk about that offline. I'm i feel liberated but But this preseason game on thursday. The pro football hall of fame game will take place on fox Generally that has been on. Espn things are just a little bit different but everybody knows on fox we will have an article available for your the in case. You are confused. we let you know how to watch and listen to it. But that's the game. But i as mentioned tony. I think the thing. Everyone's looking forward to the most is the enshrinement ceremony on saturday. Because jimmy johnson's finally going to get to go in. There's been a lot of great material floating around the internet. Different spaces different media spaces in the lead up to jimmy's enshrinement. I saw bob. Sturm had a great piece over at the athletic where you were a part of it A lot of different. You know former cowboys players from that time just kind of told some jimmy stories. Did you see the story. The second story. That troy told to bob sturm. You know what. I know the bob. 'cause he reach out to him and i was part of its piece but i have not ready yet But i will now that you mention that but there's so many great stories about jimmy. I'm just curious to what the troy add to say so troy. I don't know if you feel cheated. Tony bet Bob let troy tell two stories about jimmy so you got one a lot of great stores. I guess the best one. But the greatest of all time quarterback the cowboys. And i guess you get to stores share so said this is the second one choice said again. Everybody go read this story in the athletic that he was in the bahamas and after the super bowl in ninety three. You guys are back to back. World champions you guys are on top of the world and choice that he was there fishing with some friends and he said that jimmy had set him up What this gm at the crystal palace hotel and casino. I don't know if you've ever been there tony but obviously troy had a good time here. as the back to back super bowl champion winning quarterback But choice said he was up ten thousand dollars on the gambling table when he got back to his room. He said he didn't have his workout for the next i. This is the kind of what. I thought was fascinating. So i don't know if you guys would have these like printed out or something or like you just would write down your workout or something But choice it so he called You know your strength coach at the time and you know said hey i need my my workout you know can any actually said this is the line can fax me and my workout for so i can get it in store and troy said that he he on the message he left he said oh by the way if you run into jimmy at the facility tell them i'm kicking their ass on the tables and he hung up and so he said the next morning he's deep sea fisher and so they left really early and he said he's waiting for his friends in the front of the hotel or wherever and gm of the casino goes out to him and says hey when you get back coach says he's going to meet you at the tables and choi was like what are you talking about and the guy says jimmy johnson and he's he's coming over here he's gonna meet you at the table so poorly troy talking crap about being up on the tables inspired jimmy to just fly out of the bahamas that's just the kind of life jimmy johnson leads. Well it's it's kind curious at the detroit take home at ten thousand dollars. Jiming that he who won the most money a ally knows that anytime you get emotional at a casino you're gonna ask is gonna loose. I just know that by my experience so hopefully it worked out for both those guys. But yeah so i. I obviously vividly remember the facts days and that would be mike worst cigar string addition to the time But you know. That's kind of how competitive jimmy johnson was because here's troy. Aj he's in the bahamas at this casino as ten kicking. You know the dealers bud asked up ten thousand dollars. Here's this coach. Jimmy johnson city. Now and you know at the time. Maybe he'd made been the keys or whatever. Maybe it's like. I'm just gonna go word. Say i'm gonna wind up itself. It's really interesting because You know through all these damn stories that we tell about.

"What up man. I don't know about rest of regardless of great to be here with this morning on tuesday but yeah so i'm looking forward is the inaugural preseason for the nfl. Some excited about that. I guess i guess on what we say. But it's gonna be a little bit This more les excited about this weekend. Obviously fame and former coach. Jimmy johnson getting inducted. Yeah i wanna get to that. I do wanna caution every dallas cowboys fan. It's super pump for thursday. Maybe because we have a lot of younger listeners to maybe some people that are still newer to watching football. Everyone's jimmy johnson and it's now that was what i was gonna say. I was gonna say because thursday tony. It's like everything on social media is gonna be football as back football. I mean that's and everyone's going to go get their their top food choices. They're going to go their favorite pizza place or favorite wing place. Or you know what i mean. They're going to get the whole nine yards. I actually never understood where that expression comes from by the way because when you want the whole ten yards like generally it's first and ten but the whatever as long as you you know. I think football fans to spend as always starving for the nfl or college. Ram upon attended. But i think it's great that now we have something To watch as now there's a you're not gonna see your you start playing a whole lot of the game but nevertheless it's a symbolic we actually watch that with With all the which. I've been a stan really. Been watching that. So this gives people choices. I would say i agree. I mean i'm not complaining their football's back. Well where. I was getting distracted myself. Everyone's going to get all pumped up. Tony they're going to put on their favorite cowboy jersey. I saw there was a casillas jersey. Floating around oxnard. By the way jane slater was was on the case to figure out exactly what the story was there. And everyone's going to sit on their constantly. Football's back hell yet and then two plays in people are going to go. This sucks. I do not want to watch this. Preseason bring me the regular season but still it's football it's awesome What is your favorite memory of the preseason. Our first of all it was so funny. Talk about james later. She actually sent me a picture of that. Text it to me. And i was like well. Obviously the guy needs to wiggle casillas. Because i actually there was a kosice at actually played on the cowboys. But that's You casillas i guess is a very common name so it was good. The sam had number thirty three on these sets a one of the greatest of all time. Tony dorsett if that's huge but I thought it was funny to see that. Nevertheless may he had that jersey because he found that you bought a tony dorsett jersey. You know what i'm saying. He just he merged the two worlds. If we want to spend that way. I'll i'll ride along with you on. That sounds great. But i thought it was funny because.

Boo Weekley Knows How to Party in New Orleans

"David, talk to me about that party after your first Hilton head in New Orleans. We loaded up. We stopped here to stop off 'cause they said, ask them, oh, Jimmy Johnson, JJ, my own agent. And I asked him, I said, hey, man, I said you're big on this thing. And he said, no. They ain't, but we're going to stop off, right? For what, I said, we got to get some billion for this ride. He goes, man, he's saying to go from New Orleans. He gonna party like a rockstar. I said, now, I said, I got to get prime before I get down there. So we got ready. We went to the gas station. I grabbed me a 24 pack. We got on that airplane, me and no JoJo. And y'all know JoJo. Oh yeah. Bro that's my son's JoJo, but he's a big boy. JoJo. He's country strong. Yeah. We loaded up. We laid it over in New Orleans. And we got there. We went Jake then and we went straight to the hares. It was to give you the slot machine. With all the money. If you had the key, if you had the key to unlock it and take the cash while you couldn't win shit at that point. That's exactly right. You break even. So we got the party there, a little bit with all the guys around there and we went on down there to bourbon street and man, we shot bourbon street all the way. I'm talking about we watched the sun come up right there at the riverfront. And I said rather to run front and yodel Dixie for a long time while yo, my gosh, I sat there. "You tend to forget jerry's age because he has the energy and enthusiasm of person half his age stories that i can't share on air but i'm fascinated with it. This felt very reflective It was almost like the hourglass. He felt like the sand was running out. I don't know how else to describe it again. I'm not trying to be dramatic here. I was second row. I saw the tears. I saw him getting choked up it. He's always an emotional guy but it felt different. Maybe it's because he got the ball taking away from last year. He wasn't talking to the media like easter. i feel like he gets. He's like tinkerbell like he lives for the applause. Right like gets superpower is. His charisma is energy but it it felt not even urging it was almost like reflective bitter sweet and then here's another story to support that argument where he talks about jimmy johnson and barry switzer and almost regrets bobby when i look back at the time that we got to enjoy and what happened to us during that time Go back to what barry switzer said switzer came in the audio. "And jimmy made it real clear that if you weren't in dallas in the offseason you're not going to be on the team and fortunately fortunately dallas is a is a great city to be in to be living in year round and our our players did and not as many did it prior to jimmy coming around. But you know i can understand totally can understand. Where if you're in some of these cities and your california guy and you wanna get out of the northeast and get out of the cold and you know that maybe you don't want to train In in some of the same facilities as as you might if you're in dallas or with the rams and some of these warmer climates tampa bay. And what have you. I want to apply some of these things to your current profession. I do a lot of things but broadcasting for fox. When you're first getting into the broadcast game when did you get your reps. How'd you get your s. Because i you tell me. I don't know your full resume but i know a couple years and then you thrown into the john madden seat. Which was the number one seat. And you've been there fifteen years now doing it. So where did you first get your wax at it. And then sorta did you. Did you learn from a coach. Edward all go down where he became what year which are at today on the pinnacle of the game. Well it's it's interesting that i was playing. It was one thousand nine hundred ninety eight and Mega long story short. I had been asked for a number of years to go over to europe and broadcast games for fox and it just wasn't something. I was interested in the world league or nfl yeah nfl. Europe and japan interested in i. I didn't think it was something that i'd really enjoy. Thought dion sanders would go onto television. We thought michael would go but that was kind of an really during that era. Not many guys really talked about going into broadcasting when they got done playing. But i went over there brad. Sham the voice of the cowboys on radio. I'd always done a radio show with him and he was my partner. And i had comfort in that on that guys. I have nothing to say. I couldn't the and the reason. I didn't think that i would enjoy. It is because i always wondered. How do you talk for three and a half hours. I mean how do you have. How do you have that much to say you know and But then when you prepare and you're getting ready for a game you find out that is really quite a bit that you wanna talk about. There's not enough time really. And so i enjoyed it and i think i enjoyed it because i already had this relationship with brad. Sham the play by play guy and we left the booth. And i thought man. This was really a lot of fun. And i got a call from ed gorn with fox and he said hey. I don't know how many years you're gonna continue to play but when you retire. We've we've got a job for you at fox and i thought that was the first time that i thought well. Maybe this is something. I might mention doing until i figure out exactly what i wanna do when i retire two years later. I was contemplating retirement and matt millen had just taken the gm job with the detroit lions. She was the number two guy at fox. And so ed borne called me and said hey if you if you do decide to retire with. We'd like to iron put you in the number two spot and one of the reasons i don't to speak for matt mellon but i think one of the reasons he took that job. Why does a great opportunity but to the john madden wasn't going anywhere he was the number one guy. He was the eight hundred pound gorilla and john. And i are good buddies and a year passed with me as the number two guy and i got a call as soon as that season ended and he said i just want you to know. I'm going to monday night football. And i thought wow you're kidding me. No and i had. I didn't give thought as to how that might affect me in any way. I mean i just didn't even give me a so what that might mean for me. And and then they elevated me and joe buck and chris collins worth into a three man booth and that was two thousand and two and i've been in the i've been in the number one seed. Chris worked with him for three years now. He went to nbc. And joe. and. I were going on our twenty twentieth year twenty first year together and it's It's bizarre it's been it's been a great job In terms of just quality of life and being a single dad and raising my my youngest just graduated from high school. Congratulations wow. it's hard to believe. But i mean i. I've been doing this the whole time. They've been being raised and to be able to be there for those big moments Throughout their lives. Where were if you're if you're a coach. You know you don't get to do all those things. You just can't out of other professions but you know broadcasting afforded me a great life with my with my girls and i and gave me flexibility to work on my time. It's a lot of work especially a lot of work doing thursday nights in addition to sunday. But it's afforded me a some flexibility in being able to be there for my girls you know big moments in their lives. It's been great. Yeah peter out. I'll tell you what you going into our fifth year. Trolling i have gotten developed a good friendship and relationship and i think one of the things that immediately resonated with me is number one. If we're having games with troy it means we're worth this shit. Okay so that's a good thing. Sean you see me.

"Jimmy. You know pre-race. Although i did miss the fans now being there there still was just a great energy To be standing there knowing. I was getting ready to start This just amazing event. You know. I've never had the honor to start in this race before so a lot of really cool emotions and memories and thoughts at all. Never forget pine now jimmy during that first step behind the wheel was et more. Making sure that you didn't wreck the race car. And kind of keep yourself in contention for the rest of the team. Sure you don't wanna be the one to break the toy so to To miss some of the carnage. There were a few close calls. That i had ellen pico. Some some kind of two or three white off. The king and was spinning came back up on the track and turn five right in front of us. That one really got my attention because the dirt and dust was in the air and i couldn't see and pick the right lane and was able to squeak thyself certainly a lot of nerves to deliver the car in one piece and i'm so happy to have that out of the way can go rest and just kind of fall into the rhythm of what this race needs. Look for jimmy behind the wheel. The chip ganassi number forty eight indycar this season at road and street courses on the schedule.

Daily - Jimmie Johnson had a rough 2020 Cup Season

"For jimmy johnson. Let's just say he had a ton of obstacles in his last full time season. In nascar you get into the year and oftentimes times. They're things that disappoint your stress. You out in a negative way. And i haven't made it that far into the season to encounter any of that But last year was a really intense year. You know had very high expectations for myself The year didn't go as planned obviously Having my cova positive covid nineteen tests and missing the brickyard and missing the playoffs. You know there is a lot of negative stress on me during all of that so it can't come back at you know. This is motor torn. I do do recognize that but last year at least you know the middle part of the year Into the start of the playoffs you know it was an uncomfortable pressure. A different type of pressure. That experience too often jimmy johnson compares the cars. He's driven in the rolex. Twenty four nascar and indycar from the dp. The dpi is the car does move around in the corner. You do lack rip off and have to drive the and there's a big window to slip and slide in that that's much more in line with my nascar days. I'm finding in the indycar that that window to slide. Things around is so narrow and i've i've looped it on corner exit multiple times now a result so i i feel like i'm able to once i get into the turn and leave the corner in a dpi car or i'm still on edge in the indycar.

"Beli go to the all-star racist of course midweek. We're excited for that, but then on the next points race Texas in points. Were there a premium now? Kyle because Cole custer winning this race taking a playoff position only nine races to go before the cut-off yet you know we talked about it a couple years ago when Chris Butcher won at Pocono when you're outside the top twenty five or back in points far enough, and then all of a sudden you leapfrog into that top. Top Sixteen, and you don't just leapfrog into that top sixteen you leapfrog into the playoffs. You leapfrog all the way that's how simple it is with that win, so I think when we look at that that puts a lot of pressure on sixteen, Seventeen, eighteen, also on fifteenth fourteenth. Thirteenth twelve these guys. It tightens up it again I'm back to the musical chairs, analogy, the music just stop for somebody and that top fifteen and they got bumped out. They went into this race thinking. They were only a few points in or a few points now and now they're out completely. They've to figure out how to find their way back into it, so that is the amazing part, and that is the exciting part for me about watching these next eight or ten races leading up to that bump leading up to that playoff situation, because there's so many things so many strategies that go into it and you've always got to be looking behind you at a team that can jump. Jump in and win a race. Yeah, so yet. Pressure is mounting now so when this season started. What feels like two and a half years ago? It's hard to imagine that we're talking about just non-racist until we get to the play offs, so I think that because of everything that's been happening. I'm not sure how many people have even been paying attention to those playoff standings that much, but with coal customers win. That is open. Everyone's ass is open. The eyes of those people that are. Back to sixteenth Jimmy Johnson sitting in that sixteenth spa is the eyes of some rookies and some other teams that haven't won yet, but see that. Coq Gun win a race. That says that this is open to anybody and everybody could possibly do that, so the the pressure's GonNa. GonNa, amount here and we've. We've got racist coming up as some very difficult tracks, a coupla double header weekends that Never GonNa come along so many things happening that we can see a lot of shakeup in display off standings as we look at, it might not look anything like what we see right now, but cold customers proved to the world that is out there for the.

NASCAR allows limited audience for first time since coronavirus, Confederate flag ban

"A historic milestone for sports in America Nascar drivers on the track today, a small number of fans back in the stands for the first time since the corona virus outbreak, and now the band confederate flag not allowed anywhere in sight. ABC's Victor Oquendo is in Florida. Green. Card going full throttle. Spree quality, welcoming back a select group of fans, but not the confederate flag that company has done more in one week for racial equality than it had done in the past seventy years. Pass cars overcome covid. Nineteen fans are back at the track for the first time today. And battling social and racial injustice with a car, bearing the black lives matter Hashtag Bubba Wallace the circuits, only fulltime black driver, leading the charge for change. This is about our brothers, and our sisters that are that are are suffering through a lot and. You look at. The confederate flag and and how yes may mean heritage to most but to a group that is in a lot of pain right now. The community is in a lot of pain. That's a symbol of hate. It's an a veteran in attendance welcoming the new era. I'm happy that. THAT NASCAR has finally realized that there are so many other people that probably Wanna come to track, but they didn't feel comfortable, and hopefully now they will talk to your drivers like Jimmy, Johnson and Kyle Busch, taking their own action, cutting ties with the helmet designer over tweets about the confederate flag, but not all drivers are united one threatening to quit after the flag band, one thousand members of the military invited to the Dixie vodka four hundred everyone's screen before entry masks were required.
