"Jimmy. Johnson describes how his rolex twenty four started with himself behind the wheel to kick off the entire race and to have an opportunity to drive action express to have my former sponsor with ally on board and chelsea's here jeff gordon. You know pre-race. Although i did miss the fans now being there there still was just a great energy To be standing there knowing. I was getting ready to start This just amazing event. You know. I've never had the honor to start in this race before so a lot of really cool emotions and memories and thoughts at all. Never forget pine now jimmy during that first step behind the wheel was et more. Making sure that you didn't wreck the race car. And kind of keep yourself in contention for the rest of the team. Sure you don't wanna be the one to break the toy so to To miss some of the carnage. There were a few close calls. That i had ellen pico. Some some kind of two or three white off. The king and was spinning came back up on the track and turn five right in front of us. That one really got my attention because the dirt and dust was in the air and i couldn't see and pick the right lane and was able to squeak thyself certainly a lot of nerves to deliver the car in one piece and i'm so happy to have that out of the way can go rest and just kind of fall into the rhythm of what this race needs. Look for jimmy behind the wheel. The chip ganassi number forty eight indycar this season at road and street courses on the schedule.

Daily - Jimmie Johnson had a rough 2020 Cup Season

"For jimmy johnson. Let's just say he had a ton of obstacles in his last full time season. In nascar you get into the year and oftentimes times. They're things that disappoint your stress. You out in a negative way. And i haven't made it that far into the season to encounter any of that But last year was a really intense year. You know had very high expectations for myself The year didn't go as planned obviously Having my cova positive covid nineteen tests and missing the brickyard and missing the playoffs. You know there is a lot of negative stress on me during all of that so it can't come back at you know. This is motor torn. I do do recognize that but last year at least you know the middle part of the year Into the start of the playoffs you know it was an uncomfortable pressure. A different type of pressure. That experience too often jimmy johnson compares the cars. He's driven in the rolex. Twenty four nascar and indycar from the dp. The dpi is the car does move around in the corner. You do lack rip off and have to drive the and there's a big window to slip and slide in that that's much more in line with my nascar days. I'm finding in the indycar that that window to slide. Things around is so narrow and i've i've looped it on corner exit multiple times now a result so i i feel like i'm able to once i get into the turn and leave the corner in a dpi car or i'm still on edge in the indycar.

"Here's a bonus episode with one of the best ever sit behind the wheel and nascar seven-time champion jimmy johnson. I had hoped to get him on the podcast this year and finally worked to get a few minutes with jimmy and i'm excited to share it with you. The goal in this conversation was to reflect on his career which comes to an end. This weekend at phoenix raceway but to do so with some different questions than maybe jimmy has faced since announcing his decision to retire from full time. Competition almost a year ago. So we're going to discuss the emotions of the end now being near his personal and professional relationship with jeff gordon holding himself accountable and being held accountable by former crew. Chief chad canal that he won those seven championships with and the chip that jimmy raced with on his shoulder. I was really interested in asking that question and naturally was impressed by his answer. It's a short conversation. But i really think there's a lot here and it was certainly enjoyable. There are few stories involved as well including from the two thousand six race in indianapolis and one from dover. That has absolutely fascinating. What is one word. You would use to describe jimmy. Johnson's career think it over. While you take a listen to this conversation. Because i also put jimmy on the spot and got him to offer how he would describe it. Now that it's coming to an end with that here we go. It's seven time nascar. Champion jimmie johnson on the racing writers. Podcast so i appreciate the time we're going to give me let me jump right in. I can make the most of it. Obviously you know time is winding down. Now you're going through all of these races and coming down to the end of it all of these obligations. So what's the feeling now. I know we ask you this all the time but now with its right in front of you. It's right there at the end. You're i'm sure you've got request upon request upon request as the season's ending what's the feeling now just like as it gets closer. There's excitement i mean. I've made this choice and now the end of the road is here. I feel very fulfilled on my nascar career. Thankful for all that's happened in all the relationships i've made like i have nothing but love in my heart and feel so good about everything. Sure it's bittersweet but the bulk of of all those emotions through last october. When i made the decision the announcement so i'm really in a spot where i'm excited and celebrating. Sure there's a little like said Bittersweet but i'm really excited to finish up strong and then to see what the next chapter ranks. It's going to be exciting to watch. I know that you've already got that laid out so when you look at almost twenty years or so at least with a cup series stuff that you've been doing. I know you love racing. You've talked about their through the years. I just want to reflect a little bit. Have there been times throughout your career. Where has happened. You've been doing something and you just stop for a minute and said damn..

When you're able to be in a position that we were in like we were tonight and have to go to perform and go and do that. I think everybody gains a lot of confidence from it and we prove to ourselves that we can do it. I think we always believe we could do it. But to go out there and achieve it certainly is something that we haven't experienced yet as a group and to win a championship in this series. You have to make the final four. We see the same crowd. Make the final four since this deal's been implemented and we want to assert ourselves amongst the people who can make it consistently and i feel like we're very capable of doing that so we just have to seize the moment enjoy it. "Really got involved with jimmy with his fitness program Number of years back did a Jimmy johnson five k. And he did immediate show. And i took the media challenge. I was looking to kind of improve my health and never saw running coming into my life. And i decided yeah i could do it and you know they set it up. She can walk. You could run. you could jog. You could do whatever you wanted to do. Really the encouragement was just to do it. And so As they got closer. I started to get more and more serious about it and i went and did the event and had a great time and actually one of jimmy's guys actually came and ran the last little stretch with me so it was. It was really neat. And so that kinda created a little bond between us with my running and his right now comparing to my running his running is is is is comparing streets. Doctor your local track to a high-performance f. one machine. Jimmy is so serious about it but yet that good guy jimmy just kind of always always is interested in where i'm at with my game and we always chat about frequently. Good miss those Casual laid-back conversations that we've had over the course of time with jimmy and the garage. What career and what a driver jimmie johnson remember him. Starting out of the nascar xfinity series with motor sports making the move up to the cup series and through my interactions personally with jimmy. They've all been positive. They've all been fantastic. I've seen jimmy and a lot of environments whether it's dealing with with media and some things that necessarily weren't pleasant to talk about but on the pleasant days as well. It doesn't matter what the topic of conversation jimmy johnson is class. He always full of respect. He cares for his fans he cares for everybody about this sport and this sport and jimmy johnson threw out all he's accomplished will leave obviously a great legacy in this sport. A legacy that race fans can enjoy for years to come hate to see him. Go understand that. It's time for him to leave us. But i think we are better in this sport because of jimmy johnson competing here coming up on nascar. Live another driver. That will be hanging it up after this sunday is clint boyer. "Earnhardt seven-time champion jimmy johnson. It's hard to describe him in one word. Like king or intimidator. We do with those two guys but i think all the way back to nineteen ninety seven. That was my first year calling races on mr in radio. But i also still did some track public address announcing back in those days. And i was working in. Asa event at southern national speedway in kinley north carolina. Not all that far from my home. I was over there doing before the season. Finale was the north carolina. sweet potato. four hundred believe it or not. I remember it and i remember being introduced to this young driver. They said yeah. Keep an eye on this guy. He's only made three starts. This was his fourth start in. Asa as a matter of fact he's only his fourth start on pavement in stock car and they introduced me to him down in the pits. And i just said hello to him. And i thought okay is any other young race car driver trying to make his way up the ladder okay. Whatever but as i look back on that it's it's hard to imagine how far jimmy johnson had come but To meet him. They're driving for her dog. Motorsports in one thousand nine ninety seven. It was impressive. It really was an ice decent drive. He didn't do anything remarkable in the race but to see that name pop up a few years later to run in what is now. The nascar explicity series. I thought okay. Well this guy. I remember his name and as we all do so many new names that come along especially back in those days with the asa series but To see what. Jimmy johnson is evolved to coming coming from the offroad racing the trucks out in the desert of southern california and then the south west for that matter to where he is now. It's just unbelievable from barre vermont. It is dave moody my most memorable moment of jimmy. Johnson's career two thousand six sylvania..

"Area would go to a local children's hospital so at fifteen. I was traveling to children's hospitals experienced team. What that moment meant to to. So many people that were in need and the look around the totem pole. Then nobody really cared for my autograph. But i can see the impact it had and it. It really meant something to me. So i i've stayed on that path for a long time and once i got to cup kyle. Petty challenged me in an not really challenge. We're just suggested today few few really want to do more. Upn in your sponsors in your fans will support you and follow you. And i was violated them. So we started jimmy johnson foundation then and have been able to have a lot of very successful years. I'm so thankful for the sponsors and fans make the donations and the kind services everything that's gone on. That is something. That's really special twice. And i and something that we're now really using short kids in how give back in and teaching them those life lessons as well as fans look at you as a champion both on and off the race track. Let's do this a little bit of fun. i'm gonna give you three names that have been instrumental in your career. You give me your thoughts. Let's start with a man that believed in you first and foremost at this level. Rick hendrick change my life. There's no way around. It is belief in me in the opportunity. He gave me his absolutely changed. My life ultimately leads to meeting my wife and my kids and insist on so many levels sees absolutely changed my life and made a better. Jeff gordon very similar not only changed my life but help me be better at my craft In in really showed me the ways to be selfless in trying to help others. I don't think he ever felt like. I would be such a rival to him but he. He opened up in taught me everything he could about the sport in about driving race cars and then ultimately ended up being they're taking some winds from potentially some championships from him so that selflessness is something that i've learned and finally wooded what does chad canals mean to you jimmy. He's my my third brother not clearly from in blood but our relationship and our friendship and our bond is like a family member and he's pushing me harder than on this planet has that's good so there's clearly a lot of good that's come from it and i'm so thankful that You know i've been able to to share so many years professionally with him and look forward years you know in the future with our kids and our families and You have growing up that bonding friendship that we have you have millions of race fans around this country and unfortunately they have not been able to be with you at the race track. They would love to hold up a sign wave. Hold up the forty eight And recognize and salute you. How difficult has it been to know that they want to be there and you want them there but it just can't happen it is. It really is difficult in all. I can truthfully say and honestly say is just thank you. Thank you for your support. Thank you for being a fan. Thanks for being a fan of nascar. Even if you're watching this element of fan of the forty.

"Way to to superstar A. As stated at the top of the podcast I learned a lot about Johnson in this interview and I felt like I knew everything already when he told me that he was insecure as a racer in Nascar until he won his third championship. I was completely taken aback. There aren't very many drivers who even one three so for someone that has had historic success. Seven championships eighty three. Wins and counting. That struck me that even the greatest of the greatest ever still feel a level of concern about their positioning until a certain place. Johnson's told me more times than I can count. And it's one reason I didn't ask the question in the interview. What his true goals were. Or what little Jimmy would have said about this. He only wanted to win one race in Nascar just one and he wanted his tent. Start at Fontana California his home track in southern California. Jimmy's from San Diego Greater San Diego. He's actually from a little tiny town called Ilkka home blue collar. You heard him say. Their Dad was a heavy machine operator. Mom was a school bus driver and Jimmy. Johnson is the American dream. And I want you guys to know this about that man. I wrote this a few years ago. After he won his final championship that he is one of the most unique people that I've ever met because he is universally revered and respected as a competitor and he is universally adore as a human being. He is the kindest person his influence on young racers and and the sport itself and the way that he is completely selfless in offering his perspective to people. He's never jealous. He's never concerned about all of those things that consume a lot of us. He's an amazing husband. He's an amazing father. He's the best friend every friend and with someone has a schedule that is completely packed and and determined on January first all the way through December. Thirty first he makes time for you when you need it when you really need him. He's there and I know that because that's been my situation in the past. It was awesome to catch up with him. He believes in his heart that after a couple of down years that were absolutely subpar by his standards with his new crew. Chief Cliff Daniels that they have the opportunity to win races and win the championship into two thousand twenty and that he can go out a champion and the only man ever to win eight titles at the highest level of NASCAR. Whether or not that happens we'll have to wait and see but he really believes that they have the manpower the expertise the equipment and certainly. He still has the talent in the hunger to do that. So it was just awesome to spend that time with him and not only. Did we do that? Sit Down but we also did a bike ride that Scott legacy a mutual friend of ours who himself spent a Lotta time. Driving in Nascar. Scott is an avid cyclist. Just like Jimmy is just like I am and put together a forty mile awareness ride six years ago to raise awareness for cycling safety and this year after five years of asking me to do it. I decided that I needed to do it. And we were able to use that as a platform for the feature. We did on on Jimmy Johnson. We rode around the race track at Daytona which was an invigorating experience. I mean to be up on the race track that I grew up idolizing the NASCAR drivers who were on it. I love cycling. It's it's hard to describe if you're not a cyclist what it is. It's not just a bunch of dudes prancing around SPANDEX and looking funny with helmets on their heads. It's the one of the most freeing feelings that I could ever begin to try to articulate and it's a unique comradery in the cycling community that group that wrote in Scots Event was an amazing group of people. Sixty people there were pros in that field. There were folks who maybe were on a bike for the first time who just wanted to support Scott who were members of the Nascar community and I also want to say thank you to Steve. Who owns the hub cycling in a right around Daytona? I forget exactly what exactly what town they might be in Daytona. But it's right near the race track three or four five miles from Daytona International speedway. Steve owns a a cycling company? And my dear friend John Quinn. Who is an executive at Scott Bikes? I didn't have a bike. And so those guys got together and arranged for me to have an amazingly technologically advanced bike. That had electric. Shifter's I mean that thing was a Ferrari and it just made my experience during Scott's ride amazing I got the fellowship during that ride with Jimmy with NASCAR president. Steve Phelps with Scott Legacy whom I mentioned a few moments ago with Eric Merola who drives the Smithfield Ford for Tony Stewart in the Cup series and we got to catch up about our families and catch up about our lives and those guys were inquisitive about everything that I have gone on. And it's just an amazing community and I hope that those of you out here who are members of the of the cycling community a whole PA was able to describe will what it is. It's not about being out there and and being Lance Armstrong or being George Hincapie. It's about being out there and feeling the wind in your face and the freedom of the road. That's you know you hear guys on Harley's all the time talking about that. It's this amazing sensation. Especially when you're in a group like that that is like minded and I just love it and I'm I'm so glad that that's part of my life and I was reminded will about that community last Thursday. Third Scott's right so thank you so much to Scott and order. The people that was on the ride that was I mean. I was so stoked to meet. This guy was sheriff Chitwood. Sheriff Mike Chitwood Down in Volusia County in Florida. The ride this year was dedicated to one of Sheriff. Chitwood senior deputies. A gentleman named Frank Scofield who was hit and killed by a vehicle while riding his bike in new Smyrna beach and we stopped at the intersection. Where frank was killed? And there's now a memorial in his honor their his wife came and all of us signed a Yellow Cycling Jersey and it was framed and Scott. Gifted that framed Jersey with all of our signatures to frank's widow in an amazingly emotional scene. All the deputies. Were there sheriff. Chitwood offered his words to frank's widow and about frank to the assemblage and it was an amazing moment and it's just it was a great day for me because of the reminder of live and where your feet are so hope you guys enjoyed that. I certainly did. Thank you so much to Jimmy for giving us so much. Time and insight travis is on the other line but because. I'm remote today. We don't really have the opportunity to banter back and forth. He always does such a great job as a reminder. I'M GONNA go ahead and start beating this drum to you guys travis and once again are going to produce the masters podcast coming up in April. Four the folks at Augusta National. It is the honor of our lives to have that opportunity to partner with Augusta National Golf Club the Masters Tournament and to be Voice of that amazing amazing week. I I just. I can't even begin to rationalize that. I'm able to say that since neither can travis and I just can't believe it and we're so grateful for that opportunity so coming up in April we are so excited and can't wait for you guys to hear Masters podcast two point. Oh remember to go. Listen to stupidity and check out many times and Sarah Spain's podcast. I'm so grateful that you guys are loyal to Marty. Smith's America thank you to our law enforcement officials again. I was reminded of that on that. Ride what a special group of people are. Law Enforcement Officials are in communities all over. This country are policemen and women firemen first responders and I'm so grateful as always for the United States military. I watched platoon last night. I got to San Francisco late from Daytona twelve hour travel day and I laid down in the bed and turned on the TV and platoon was on. I had not watched that movie in a long time and I I just was completely taken aback with what I was seeing and it was yet another reminder to me that we live in the greatest country in a lot of people have really given a lot and sacrificed everything in some cases in order for us to live in a free land. So thank you to our military. You guys see somebody in restaurant or in the airport walking down. The sidewalk has on that says Vietnam veteran Korean War veteran World War Two veteran Desert Storm veteran. Stop them shake hands. Say Thank you that is Marty Smith's America Volume Steve Smith and appreciate y'all for listening so much have an amazing week. We'll try to do better next time. So y'all next time around..

"Christie DOT COM. Yeah Kind of a big story of rose in the wake of homestead dead not championship related of course because that was a runaway by Kyle Busch. But they're taking away his cup. No no that's safe. It's staying but there's Karama back in the back of the pack. Carry the guys that you like to follow from week to week. Only you have breaking news from the back of the pack. This is pretty big though. This is race manipulation. Asian this is just like the micro wall bracing two thousand thirteen incident in Richmond but it was in the championship race and it had to do with the guys in the back of the pack this time. Round of course sleep the top non-charter car season so there's thirty six cars they get a charter each year. So they're guaranteed entry in each race while the cars aren't guaranteed. Don't have a charter. And those guys guys battle it out all season long and hoover's highest up in owner points out of them at the end of the season gets an extra bonus so all the races where we don't hit forty cars carry. The remaining in person of the race is thrown into a fund and at the end of the year that fund is given to the top non-charter team so quite a bit of money was built up as we didn't hit forty cars very very much this season. Were they out there breaking some kneecaps or what. Now they weren't. They weren't doing that but they were doing some questionable things so The twenty-seven team of of premium motorsports which was driven by Ross chastain. They tried putting their premier driver in the seat to try to get the best. Finish possible this weekend because they entered the weekend with a seven point lead on the ninety six brothers racing team which had drew herring making his cup series debut well towards the end of this race drew herring was doing what it took to tie the twenty seven car and based on a tiebreaker. The Ninety six car would take that the best open charter team spot with bonus money so it was is looking very very not good there for motorsports and all of a sudden with about thirty laps to go. Some weird stuff starts transpiring the fifteen car They have some weird radio Jio transmissions about their steering box steering box. Go to the garage go to the garage. So they fall out of the race and that that moves chastain up to thirty seven in the The seventy seven car has has some other weird transmission where they're trying to tell Reed Sorenson garage for four or five laps before he finally understands what's going on and so he goes to the garage as well which moves moves up Another spot the twenty seven car and then the fifty two car rick ware racing. They also park at early Fifteen laps to be exact. which moves chastain up to the spot? He needed to be in thirty fifth to get that extra point to break the tie with the ninety six car. Well as you know you probably because dot com. I went through the audio that I could get a hold of And so that's where we found the weird audio transmissions and stuff where it seemed like they were doing some stuff a little bit on the nefarious Side of things to try to make Their car get the extra bonus. Money and APPARENTLY NASCAR has also agreed to that. Because they've done their own investigation. Penalties have now been dished out. Carrie huge penalties. What I mean th th the season's over what is it like you? Don't get to celebrate Christmas. Or what is it well. I'm sure they probably won't be celebrating this Christmas. Because now they've not only been stripped ripped of that top highest non-charter team spot because they've been deducted fifty championship owner points but they've also got a lot of money money flowing around here between these These four teams that were involved here. So the fifteen car was docked fifty championship points which means now. The Ninety six team hits that championship bonus for being the top non charter team the fifteen team. which is the teammate car? The twenty-seven was docked fifty championship points and assessed. A fifty thousand is not finding the owner spire motorsports. which was the seventy seven car? Reed Sorenson that cars. Osman Doc Fifty Championship owner points fifty thousand dollars for their participation in the event here and require racing's number fifty two team which I couldn't find evidence of but I'm sure there's something in there that Nascar found that they were transpiring and conspiring in Miss. But they've also been docked fifty points and fined fifty thousand dollars as well on top of that.

"The mirror. You just posted pictures The other day dressed up as over the years You had one year where you were a turtle So you're A pirate one year. You were Tony Stewart. One year Like Kurt Warner one year is that right. Yeah so which one of those costumes your most impressive As a kid grown. Well Stuart thing. That wasn't this Halloween me and that was almost every day I would put that thing on and play my video games so the two zero one is probably my favorite. But I like the Kurt Warner uniform and helmet. I remember we got. I think it was a cold or something they had a Kurt Warner Santa Brett Farve one and I bought them. Both and I would always dress up and drove football around the house. So I don't know why. Kurt Warner fan growing up. Because I was colts. Fancy but I would say the Tony's favorite them very very cool so did you have any aspirations of being an NFL player. At any point I played football till third grade. Third Grade was the first year we had tackle football. And I remember I was on defense and this guy came running around the corner and I jumped out of the way to make sure I didn't hit him and I remember my coach came and yelled at me and that was that was the end of football for me. I realized real quick for me and I had a sector baseball and basketball but football. I love watching it. Just not very good at playing although you never made it in the NFL. "Thing than stats okay. So next year last last year full time in the Cup series. So does he have any goals. I think I haven't heard the clip you've selected here. I think what his goals were. Yeah first of all. The outlook for next year is is absolutely to win races and being that final four in if you're in the final four the championship for I should should say it Phoenix. Now you've got a shot and that that's that that is absolutely the goal for next year. I have the fire. Our team is getting stronger. I think Hendrick motorsports is a whole. We've had a great evolution to the course of twenty nineteen. We have new things coming our way for twenty twenty and just pulling back and looking at the opportunity. This company has twenty twenty and then myself with it being my final full-time year. That's that's a special opportunity in that did kind of go into my my my thought process in my head which probably never shared twenty years has always felt like a nice round number two to be a full time driver. I can see what twenty twenty looks like I. I don't know like Mike much like all of us and we don't know what twenty one looks like so it didn't play a role in my decision making process. But when I'm looking around trying to find things to to to sway me one way or the other it's like twenty twenty s looks like awesome opportunity. Yeah so I mean you know win some races. Pick up that At number eight championship being chip that that'd be a good goal if I were him right. So The r word has been used. He's going to retire from full time. Cup series racing which means he's not retiring from driving think of any sort he'll still be doing but let's hear Jimmy talk about that. This is not retirement from racing stepping down from the thirty eight weeks year that it takes to be competitive additive and in the time that goes with that I would come back and drive cup cars for Rick Without a doubt and all options are open honestly accept any car and festivals also knew that was not but I really look forward to what what might develop in twelve months from now in what opportunities. Virginia's might be out. There was just kind of wait and see and most importantly I feel like I need to take a deep breath and just see what kind of comes from their put. My family first instead of racing. I just once in take it from there. No I'm wide open. This is not a retirement from from driving racecars. This is slowing down from thirty eight weekends a year. And you certainly Noga. Oh the stress and pressure that Brian that that it takes in nineteen years in cup and then two years in xfinity series. Plus everything before for that one more balances is really where that sits but It's been run and we're GONNA keep going. He hasn't said this. But what I think is goal after the twenty twenty season is going to be those twenty four rolexes. Oh that's a good point. He's run it before pretty strong in it before for his Car malfunctioned if I remember correctly. So that's an interesting thought. All right he got the The final time machine all fired up ready to go. I do proved group. D capacitor is flexing. Jimmy takes us all the way back to his first meeting with his new sponsor lows for his rookie season. We had a meeting across the street over here. bricks old office area and those folks were there and Tillman was was his waiting for me to arrive at a sponsor commitment for my Bush team and was just getting back to town from it and Bob wanted to look me in the eyes and find out if I was really willing to to man up in win a race for the company and at that point that WanNa race and he literally started across the boardroom table and and put me on the spot asked me if I thought it was able to win a race dug deep and sat there and I felt like allied right and do his eyes and said Yes sir I can thankfully we delivered eighty three times since I was a bomber. Hey what race or races are on. Jimmy's list that got away. There's two okay okay. There's probably more than two but coke six hundred for rookie year coke six hundred. I'm really soft at getting into the pit blocks. We ledin hidden five hundred miles that things had five hundred plus and he's like come on buddy get into the pits pit box harder. We got to get it. Get it in here get it. In here I slide through the box. Come Out Alton third or fourth and work my way back the second one on the table so that one that one I definitely remember one other one is still today. Swear that the I should have twelve wins at Dover one Pablo spun the tires on a restart and baled and made me look bad and I beat him to the finish line and called on it so that that's another when it comes to mind that's interesting for a guy who has eighty three wins having to talk about the ones that got away. There shouldn't be that many in there but there are yeah totally totally and simple question Russian. Why retire why? Why man why I mean at the end of the day this is about time I guess when I look at next year I've been dreaming of Racine as much as I could for forty.
