"This Friday before championship Sunday edition of the rich eisen show where live right here on the Roku channel 8 four four two O four which is the number to dial here on this program so excited to be here with all of you 8 four four two O four riches. The number to dial, please call us. Tell us what you think is going to happen this weekend. If you want to give us your prediction as to who will make Super Bowl 57, we're all for it. Please do so. It'll be a lot of fun here on this show. We have Greg Olson, who is getting set to call the NFC championship game on Fox on Sunday. He's calling into the show first up in about 20 minutes time. And then Tom palace is going to join us. As only one head coaching spot has been filled right now, Sean Payton is still out there. Apparently, for somebody to go and just generationally enrich him more than he already is and have him come and be the head coach there. Is it the Denver Broncos? Could he go to Arizona or stay at Fox? What is going on with all the coaches searches? Dan Quinn, TJ Jefferson, I'll go to you first, said that he's sticking around in Dallas. To stay because there's still unfinished business and. That one kind of surprised me to be honest in compensated. Well, I'll ask that of Tom. Tom is going to join us shortly, but good to see you over there. TJ liked that candle crazy. How are you over there? Good to see you. DJ Mikey D is in D's nuts. How are you doing? I'm ready. You are here because do you know how many people are looking forward to your weather report at the end of this program? Not to get you flop sweating, going already. TJ just wants to laugh. I have friends who say, please tell me, Mike's doing a weather. I like that. Tell them, thank you. And I'm ready for it. Do you really? Do I really? Yeah. Yes. Okay. I will show you the tests. I actually believe this. I believe. People want to see me sweat. And that's what it is. It's they're not interested in the information. I could say it's snowing. It could be sunny as hell. The most entertaining weatherman since Lloyd Lindsey young and everyone remembers him from the northeast. Okay, very good. Another three named guy who folks in New Jersey know very well. That's the way we're rolling here on this program. What's more likely? We'll give you our picks for Super Bowl 57. Who we think is going to make it. That's how we're going to go out the door later on today. Richard's still on the ankle watch too. I mean, we'll see. We'll see, I don't think mahomes is talking today, but he never had one video Mike pop. We could just imagine it. So we've been having a lot of fun with the ankle watch. No question about it. Let's talk about these quarterbacks. The four that are remaining. The four quarterbacks that are remaining. One has an opportunity to win his second Super Bowl. One has an opportunity to make his second Super Bowl in consecutive years in just his third year. And then there's two young ones. On the other side, and what happens to be an MVP candidate and the other one happens to be a rookie of the year candidate and one of the most amazing stories of all time. I'm talking about obviously Patrick Mahomes, Joe burrow. Jalen hurts, and Brock purdy. How about that as the final four quarterbacks of this NFL campaign? So many are talking about the AFC championship game because of mahomes versus burrow. And the fact that we are watching some young, talented quarterbacks who appear to be quite generationally talented. Going against each other, forging a rivalry in the conference that Brady and Peyton Manning had so many great moments together, and last year we thought that was the birth of the mahomes and Allen rivalry and this year coming in to this year, the conversation was not will mahomes and Allen play each other in the playoffs. But just which round was it going to happen? And sure enough, they didn't get to see each other because for the second straight year Joe burrow was raised his hand and said, I've got to see this tale. And in terms of this rivalry between the two, I've got some numbers. It's fascinating. That these two guys are already right now. Are on the list of quarterbacks all time. That have 50 or more percent of their franchises play off wins. In the history of their franchises. Mahomes and Joe burrow, both. Have exactly half of the all time playoff wins for their franchises. Mahomes has 9 career playoff wins, borough has 5 will do the math. The chiefs have 18 career playoff wins. And the Bengals have just ten career playoff wins. That's it. That's crazy when you consider the Bengals been to three super bowls. And they have just 50% of their wins. Another quarterback with 50% of their franchises wins. Jim Kelly. Bills have 18 all time playoff wins just like the chiefs Kelly has 9 of them. The other four quarterbacks, you can guess one of them. Chris. Tom Brady. He has 30 of the Patriots 37 all time playoff wins. 9 81%. The only one with a higher winning higher percentage of his team's all time playoff wins. Drew Brees has 9 of the ten saints all time playoff wins. John Elway is 14 of the Broncos 23. 60.9%. Close to being nice. And how about this one? Our buddy Kurt Warner. Has 57.1% of the Cardinals all time playoff wins. He has four of the franchises 7. Children Russell Wilson? I did not. He does not have that large percentage on it. Really? Well, he doesn't have over 50%. This is Jim zorn was put in a long time. Come on, Matthew Hasselbeck, as you know, made the Super Bowl. Yeah, that's true, true. Good point. So, look, these two are now marking notches for their franchises all time. And now against each other, you want to talk about this rivalry here. I've got an interesting statistic for you. They're all over my desk. I got to find it for you. Here it is. Mahomes in borough as we know have played each other three times and burrows won all three, the NFL network research department came up with a list of notable quarterbacks to win their first three or more starts against their rival and head to head matchups. Aikman beat Steve Young in the first three times he faced him. No way. Bradshaw beat Roger Staubach the first four times he faced it. Ken stabler beat Dan fouts the first 5 times he faced him. Bart Starr beat Fran Tarkenton the first 5 stars he faced him and Tom Brady beat Peyton Manning the first 6 times he fell. And this has an opportunity to just get right in this mix. This all time next can't wait. Nor can Joe borrow, who said this about taking on a chiefs team that is once again hosting them in the AFC championship game. Coming

I mean, obviously you're going to get a lot of people saying Joe Montana, dude. Obviously, clearly. We can just stop it. Honestly, we have to stop that conversation. I mean, there's a conversation of the greatest player of all time in the history of the NFL and it comes down to Jerry Rice. Jerry Rice and Jim Brown that Brady finally crashed that party. Just a couple of years ago, but when I first started NFL network, damn near 20 years ago, it was Jerry Rice or Jim Brown. That was the conversation and that was always going to be the conversation until Brady crashed that party. Seattle, Steve largent is an outstanding choice. I love that choice. "There's a lot more that Don't you know where you have? Tom Brady? Ryan Fitzpatrick, a couple guys Matt Ryan. Now it's older, and you have seen some guys that are getting up there years. Ben Roberts Burger. But, yeah, they're able to do it. They've been lucky where they've really stayed injury free, and I think that's one of the biggest things If you can stay injury free, where it's an injury, that even if you have it, you can come back in rehab and do those things they have. Around for a long time. And guys are I mean, with all the technologies out there about how to take care of your body, how to rehab? How does just strength train how to eat right? You can play a long time and if you can be in a good system And be smart and help teams win. Then you're even got to be there longer. What do you attribute some of these rookies coming in and playing sooner and being acclimated sooner? Uh, from the college level. What do you attribute that to these days? Well, you know, I've always wondered that is it Is that the NFL taken on the college mindset a little more. Or is it the college mindset taken on the NFL? Um What they like to do a little more, and I think it's more the NFL is going to more of the Shotgun all the time. You know 345 receivers all the time. Not so much like it used to be when I came in when it was I formation full back. You know you had you had to running back and you had two tight ends and Lot of that stuff, and and we don't see that as much anymore. And we see these quarterbacks who have been Inet system in college and learn to understand what it looks like to have five receivers and how to how to pick the defensive partner all those kind of schemes. And they're coming in the pros and they're able to go and write and do that, and we saw. I think the best example was watching Justin Herbert do that last year. Yeah, Yeah, I mean, offensive Rookie of the year. And, you know, I think back to Cliff kings, where you're getting hired out of Texas Tech like that's something that never would have happened Probably back during your playing days ago. Not only quarterbacks coming in having played in the air raid, but literally a coach who runs the air raid being brought into the league to coach a rookie quarterback to run essentially, you know, probably a modified version of it. But its cliff Kingsbury's offense that they're running there in Arizona. Right, And we're seeing that you know, before when it was kind of taken over. You're like, okay, Do I want to put my quarterback back there and shotgun and we're not really sure if he's going to be able to find all the blisters because Remember when we first started doing some shotgun and Dicle Bo would come up with these crazy blitzes. When you play the Steelers, and you're like we've never seen that before, You know, but they've also had to adjust with all the receivers in the talent that spread out across the field. And so I think it's been a give and take between offense and defense, and I really like how it's going. I mean, I love the scoring, obviously, because I'm an offensive guy. But, you know also, um, we know that Good defense is going to get you a long way. And so it's really a lot of fun to watch the NFL every year because these rookies are coming in. They're able to throw the ball around, and they do such an amazing job. Understanding of defense. I think it's they're they're kind of light years ahead of where we were in the nineties. Gus Frerotte, former NFL quarterback. Joining me on CBS Sports radio accustom always curious someone with your career path. I think seven different teams that you played for. Do you have a particular juncture of your career that you look at most fondly among all the stops? Well, I think I love them all. And you know, I enjoyed every stop. Obviously, it took my family everywhere we went, and I mean, it was just it was. I was just lucky to be there for 15 years, you know, and play for all the teams. I did, but Every stop. I can tell you a great story that I had, um of teammates, a family of coaches. Um, but, you know, being drafted in Washington and being there As long as I did. I think that was my favorite. Stop. The first go around because D C is just an amazing place. And you know, I love playing for the Washington football team. What was it like playing with Barry Sanders? I don't know. Let him get too. Oh, he was gone by 1990 God, that's oh, my God. That's why I went. That's one of the reasons I chose. Detroit was to go play with Barry and, you know, be Scott Mitchell and hand it off and just watch him run the ball. And then you know, right before training camp because Yeah, I'm not coming back. And we were all like, Uh huh. What are we going to do? So, you know, we we ended up actually making the playoffs that year, and we did. Okay. And I couldn't imagine how good we would have been if we had Barry Sanders there. That's wild. OK? Yeah, I'm just I'm looking here. I'm going on 1999 Barry Sanders are still around. But you forget like Barry Sanders just up and retired. Out of nowhere just said peace out. See you later. That's crazy. So so you guys are there one day and all of a sudden, Barry Sanders says. See you later. Yeah, It's like, okay, We're getting ready to go to training camp, you know, and you're getting ready to kind of leave your family and and it's July and we're going to training camp and all of a sudden the big media hype comes out. Barry Sanders says he's retiring, and it's like we what You know, like our whole off season was predicated on because this is what Barry like. This is what he how he wants to run the ball. That's why the scheme he likes and so you know, we went in and you know, we had some good players that were his backups, but, uh You know, I can't imagine what would have what we would have done on offense. If we would have had very I'm looking at who The leading rushers were on that team. I mean, Yeah. Imagine being Greg Hill or Ron Rivers. I'm looking at it right now. Those poor guys talking about filling shoes. Oh, my goodness. Wow. Crazy. That mattered who they would have brought in. Um you know, those were not some shoes that anybody could have field. Yeah, they Whoever they brought in their name is not Barry Sanders. That's who that is. That's crazy. That's right. I mean, we had a good team. Jim Zorn was my quarterback coach. Yes, sir. Crooms. Those are offensive coordinator Bobby Ross was the head coach. We had a great team, and we had I thought we had a really good scheme. It just didn't work out like we wanted. Yep. Yep. They said You're too young. We wouldn't even we wouldn't reject you. We're not doing it. You need to go Try something else. Go get a better therapist like we've got a connection to get a better brace, You know? So I go this guy Nino predict. He's a He's a chiropractor here in Kirkland, Washington, and he saved my life like he brought it back to life. He made it look better. He manipulated. He kind of got it going again. Then I gotta brace. But a few years later, I got a better bridge. So this thing is called an X Osim. And it's funny. I told Jim Zorn, who has a similar problem on his left ankle. He got the same first press as a gym. You got to go to the second guy right now. You have a station wagon and I have a Ferrari like they're two different devices. No offense, The other guy, it's you know, it doesn't for some people, but I can run with this one. I'm going to go play golf. I'm out the door After this question, I hoped and get well. And I can walk with Gretchen. I can hike I can sprint like it's amazing. So the day I got mine is late fall 2017. I believe it was Gretchen. I immediately like Let's do something good. Like I cried for two hours. When I got mine. I couldn't believe my gift. We start a foundation called Run freely. We've raised money a whole bunch of different ways. Jamal Crawford just give $1000 for each of my 27 years, so he just donated 37,000 whole bunch. People have done nice things, and the $5 ones matter as much as Jamal is 27,000, right? $5 to 1 person is 27,002 Jamal. So it's all relative. But we have We have enough money right now for six new veterans, and I just got to call the next one in line out in Port Angeles, Washington, which is on the Western peninsula. She was so sweet. She almost made me cry on the phone like I I couldn't hear her answers without getting emotional And sometimes I choke up talking about it myself Just because it truly changed my life Now I don't need it day to day. You know, I'm not in great pain anymore. Word just to go to store. You know, I just wear flip flops all the time are slippers or barefoot. But if I'm going to do something athletic Have to have it or my ankle will totally blow up. So it's huge gift to me, and I'm really proud that we're doing the fact that you departed, ESPN became a huge Benefit gift to run freely dot org. Correct 100% you you can't you can't state it any other way? My departure and ESPN suit Six new people are gonna have their lives changed, so that's pretty good. But how much money came into the foundation over the last three weeks Since since you died, like 50,000 something like that, And that doesn't sound like a lot. There's other people to hold big galas, and they bring in a minute. Word. It's me. My Twitter girl named Mara in South Carolina and my wife and people like you people. You've done it. "Solution to avoid amputation. What propelled you to do that? And how is the foundation doing overall? Well lately, we're doing great, like the news of my departure. Um it's funny and great at the same time, like, uh, we every time I did an interview like this. I would find a way to mention or just come up, but I broke my leg in college 1980 last play of the game. We're at Oregon. I'm in the game. Last play were down 33 to 9, I think was very Decide One more We call it 95. That was like triple go routes all over. And why not? You know when I try to make it 33 16 guys fix his helmet on my ankle ball comes out of my hand. It was a wet day, horrible pass and have a fracture dislocation. So I played the next year. And this this favor like wrapping all these many stories into one here the next year I played I was second string to Sam King. Sam King led the nation in passing yards will beat BYU at BYU that year. Uh, Jimmy Sandusky, a post corner Jim McMahon was hurt. A guy named Steve Young was their quarterback. Yes, Funny, right, Like all that I didn't play that game, Sam through for like 500 yards. So after the season, the Seahawks gave him a free agent deal. But he was going to go to Canada. Instead. My coach said, Hey, if you like that guy, you should look at the backup guy. He probably has a better arm. Sam was a better quarterback, right? That was pretty much the book on us and I go through. To Steve Largent. If you will. He happened to me in the building. That was my travel guy. Wow. And he was. Yeah, and I signed a contract. But I ended up working out for three weeks in Kirkland. But I end up failing the physical for this damn ankle, right? They put me on the machine to measure the strength and I was thinking it was just like a 40 or bench press. You know, I was trying right? I would have cheated. I would have gone hard on my bad leg. 70% of my good leg. I didn't realize what was going on. But they were measuring the difference between my good and my bad and the variance was so great. They're like we just You know what dark. The doctor just said. We can't pass you like your ankle isn't isn't going to last or you're going to get hurt worse, or we're gonna have to pay for it or whatever. So I was out. I got a TV job five days later in Seattle is kind of a gofer, right? Took a while to move up to three or four years. I get on the air than I do sports and the whole ESPN thing. So I mean, I think all of that matters in the makeup of me and how I look back at everything. The appreciation I have for what it all meant, and also kind of where I am now. Like I've got more attention in the last three weeks than I have. In 27 years you were talking about outside more in three weeks than 27 years by far. Wow. Yeah. I mean, I'm not saying I didn't. Somebody wouldn't call. Hey, you want to be in a commercial, but I'm talking about in a condensed period. Well, you know, you know what It's like. It's like you died to a certain extent. That's what Ben Schwartz said. I don't like using that word. But sure, Uh, said, how is your electronic funeral or something else? No, no. And I was so touched. Truly earnestly. You know, I didn't know how many people would even carry, like, like whatever some other guy old guy left ESPN, you know, give us the next game. And just the outpouring and the sweet words and from athletes from strangers, you know, from colleagues, you know all over the place. So going back to the run free, though, because I got sidetrack the ankle is what the point that was filled the physical years and years later, I'm now 50 something. And I was considering amputation. I'm not kidding. Like it hurts so bad at this period in my life. I was doing the football stories. Matt Doyle, the producer with me and and Oh, my God, he he just shake his head as I'm like limping off the plane turning, you know, drive your ankle into a place where it's bending up again because I have like a locked ankle of like a self used ankle essentially and the flights not good for it, and it's our It was a bad hair and dark period. And I got advice from the amputation people in Seattle Harborview Hospital. They said You're too young. We wouldn't even we would reject you. We're not doing it. You need to go Try something else. Maybe Diamondback, maybe name a team marks when he's probably been on it because Tyrone Corbin of baseball exactly. Good teammate, Good pinch hitter and just, you know, I mean, I I think he's the guy you want on your team. Anyway, He's going to be here to 15 little Giants baseball and the rest of the N L West. And then Eric Musselman, the head coach of the Pig suey, Arkansas Razorbacks will join us and we'll find out what he's got going on, and he follows the NBA two so and get his starts on. On the NBA playoffs. What's up, fellas? Yo, what's up? You know it's funny, you I'm sure Eric follows the NBA intensely and he's got a couple guys in this upcoming draft. But you know, he's like a guy that can do both. You know he could. He could see him back in the NBA. I thought he did a really good job, and I think he's credible enough. But I think the college game his enthusiasm and his energy and his His motivational tactics since I just think In some ways, he's like a perfect perfect coach for today's college game with the transfer portal and all the recruiting that has to go on. Multiple levels. I think he's like, ideally suited for that. Yeah, all the Twitter is going to hit at college. It ain't hitting their head in the pros, and then they can dig the hole Twitter stuff and you can't come in there. Dressed as an army ranger, uh, in the NBA, That's I mean, that's just that just ain't cutting. It got good. Well, yeah, he could assure you see what happened. I mean, kitchen guys gonna go. Uh, yeah, bro. I got kids at home. All right. Just tell me what I need to do and tell me how to do it. And I own five homes that I have $10 million in the bank. Uh, I don't want to be an elephant who will move on. I would move on from the Rangers. Uh, you go ahead and you would get you similar war games after practice, but No, they're just it's different mentalities. And you mean anybody? Can think about what they were like as a man or a woman. And what they're like, is a college aged man or woman. I mean, did different things appeal to you. You have different sensibilities in different things hit that kind of step. That motivational stuff. Will hit you in college because you know it's a lot more raw bra, then that kind of stuff pros. I mean again. I always tell people we love to play and I loved playing. It was fine, but it's a business. I mean, you're not going out after practice the with your boys and hanging out Sure. Go to the pool. Good play Wiffle ball. Do we just hang out? Do whatever you know the pros practice over. Everybody goes home because I mean, well, except for me, Jim Peterson. We have together all the time. But guys have families. You know you have families you have y have your girlfriend's it. Whatever. You're just gonna go home, and, uh then do your own thing could one could probably more likely. But you just go to your thing. And nobody regrets as you that it's just different. You know you're grown up now. And when you're growing up, you just do different things. You have different responsibilities. And you just You know you don't have time for that stuff. You don't really want to hear that stuff. College. It's totally cool, but And not only it's a knock on anybody's just what are you better suited for? Like? I was saying Jim Harbaugh's much more suited for college. Then he is the NFL even though he proved he could win. At the NFL. But like his, it's demeaning to call it an act but for lack of a better word, that's what I'll call it because I don't think it's an actor too. He is, but That type of coaching is much better suited for college than it is the NFL. I mean, you can't tell me That they're winning, so they're like going along with it. But like you can't tell me that nine years like the whole who's got it better than that's nobody there like rolling their eyes going. I felt okay. Here we go. No, nobody. It's like Jim Zorn, Washington hip hip parade. They had to be thinking. Are you kidding me? We're back and Pop Warner and I was like George Allen stuff right there. I know that's why he did it, but it's like, what are we doing? Like that's what we're doing today. We're doing hip hip arrays, so I just I think most guys roll their eyes. That type of stuff when you're winning. That takes care of everything, Uh, pretty much, But you ain't doing who's got a better than us. Nobody in like, four and four. There. There can be like if you hit the bricks who got it better than us. Beat it artistically. Quite a few teams, actually, exactly. Well, yeah, you mentioned nothing. You mention it, Coach, Uh, coach up like this is the time for podium and just want to point out that? Yes. There are several teams that have it better than us. You might want to use in fact, checking. Yeah, I just like we have the standings right here, sir. We had a recruiter. We had a recruiting visit. And and Steve always loves to mention. This is where we're at it. Randolph Park. And we take this recruit out. Uh, for like a picnic hangout. Screw around with football. All that kind of stuff just messing around and the player we were all there, and it was there and everything. And loot walks over to the young man.
