"Now. You were not a garden designer. Then and here you came to this place, and there's views of mountains and feels, and it feels like a big open place, but. You weren't a garden designer. SORTA figured out how to make a plan. And you speak about in the book about measuring the House and measuring the distance to things and kind of drawing and taking photos and kind of pinning up that and some inspiration on almost like a mood board to get started like you know to figure out what you were going to do, yes. Yes I came here not as a gardener. But I felt that I needed to learn really quickly. And and the way I learned was that. I had been farming and. As I. Tell Maybe in the book I made. Five thousand dollars at it. My first year felt great, and I made five thousand dollars at farming my last year and I'd had enough. And I landed a seasonal job restoring a half miles worth of white, pine and hemlock hedges at the Saint God's national historic site, in Cornish, which was the garden of Augustus Saint Gaudens and was part of an artist colony that included architects, landscape, architects and artists. Like Gerald Plot and Ellen Shipman And I really immersed myself. In the Garden Gardens, but it, but then in learning about the gardens that those artists had made. A really came to gardening? As an art form I. And then I had to learn. How to draw. and. Deal with hard scape, which still not very good at. <hes> but the National Park. Service was great about supporting. It staff. By providing training and I spent a couple years running down to Boston to Cambridge to the Radcliffe Institute and to the Arnold Arboretum and guarding the woods and learning the trade there. Okay, I'm applying it. <hes> on the job at Saint Gaudens and here and in some of the other Corner Gardens. I see so. One of my favorite parts of the book, besides all those big leafed plants in that was seventy foot, long border or something. It's just magnificent. Is that you make a list in the book that I find especially helpful I think you call it guiding principles and and I know this was after the fact because you started making the garden in nearly thirty years ago or twenty years ago, and you wrote the book just recently, but but it's good for those of US making Gardener Getting Ready to find tuna. Revise our gardens to think about guiding principle so is this something like this sort of self assessment? What do I really care about? Is this something you do with clients when you first visit there places? If the let me get away with it, yes! And, sometimes, sometimes more successfully than than others. Yeah I don't have a form. That I had a a client, but I I WANNA. I as a designer WANNA be able to understand the context. The built context, the living context the landscape context. And the social context as well as how the <unk> Oman Gardner is going to use the US the space use the garden, and what their what their goals

"Okay, so I should say before we begin our chat that we're going to have a book giveaway of the new book spirit of place with the transcript of the show on a way to garden dot com, so people can look there and enter and congratulations of course on the book. And now toward the beginning of it, maybe ten or so pages after the quote I said in the introduction. You write that much of what gardening is about. Is the feeling of being connected to a place and the place that you profile in the book. Is Your home in Vermont? So tell US briefly for context how you I connected to it when that was and so on. That was nearly thirty years ago when. I had really only started working in gardens and being interested in gardening, but my partner Jim Tatum was offered a job elsewhere didn't take it and we said we needed to Mixed things up a little bit, so he wanted a A modern glass surrounded house with the view and I wanted a farmhouse, and luckily he's the one who found this farmhouse and. The. And what he found was a house that ended than built in the eighteen thirties serve a modest early, Greek revival style and With still open open field to rounded force encroaching beautiful stonewalls hundred-year-old. Maple trees and apple trees and a place that had been gardened by its previous owner Betty Mackenzie for sixty years so I inherited. A lot of really great bones, and then also a lot of blackberries and Barberi and wild roses. That's that's what we found, so you're in what then are you in sound for? What's owner you in bill? On the map it's it's shows zone five, but. That's but I'm in zone. Four zone five is two miles from here, but about six hundred feet in lower elevation close. To get river okay. And where open and the. The garden and the House is on the. North Slope, so we're really open to the winter wins, and and some are gusts and downpours..

Jessica Cornish in the post, which like I get not wanting to call your girlfriend by her stage name, but he said twice like her full legal name, kind of a great is she like rebranding or something? I don't know things about. Who is Jessica Cornish. Just the Cornish. Who or is that I just love order. It's. There's a mixture of like people being delighted. Do you think that there are like Channing Tatum fans and people who know about Channing Tatum who are literally? Who is Jessica Cornish. Yes. They are. They don't know who just a Cornish is. And then you're like oats Jessie, j like I don't do that that doesn't help. Yeah. Dare name is Jessie J's real government. Name is Jessica Ellen. Cornish. Cornish Cornish hen. She is British so Aloom either Jessie j rebranding Jessica Cornish or she d branding. Not even that funny. Oh my God. I'm having a fit real. Okay. I first of all I think she I wouldn't be surprised if she were debating, but I also wouldn't be surprised if Channing Tatum is just a weird kind of dopey robot who doesn't realize what he's doing. Nobody the he's being sweet like that is her name. That's like I don't. She's my girlfriend were intimate. It's weird. Yeah. So it was clearly have. Yes. The caption is what if he calls her just Cornish. What if it's like an intro can actually dice to feel like we're living in a fucking weird. And you're like alright. Yes. Okay. I see Jessie j holding hands with Channing Tatum. And I'm like where am I? Yeah. Yeah. Yes. This. Yes. Into this caption. So the the caller pointed out that he brings up the name twice, which is true. But when you read the full cabinet is utterly bizarre. So it's a photo of him like in sort of like, what do you call those the he's he's not fully naked? He has like on ready naked. But you can tell you what do you call? He's in an outdoor shower not up. What do you call them? Why? What guys where like what you bear? You're a guy. I know. "It'd be no is not here because I know he'd have better stories than than I'm going to have dick nudge loose. Who was a star at Maryland in the early fifties. I two hundred and thirty five pounds of tackle dick Najah Lutsky died in October at the age of seventy seven he was a son of a. Polish emigrant he grew up twenty yards from the steel mill where his dad worked in Pennsylvania. He was followed his older brother Ed to Maryland. Ed was an all American fullback in the player of the game in the nineteen fifty two sugarbowl Ryan, which I'm sure you remember Maryland upset national champion Tennessee in that game. Twenty eight to thirteen. Thanksgiving. Yeah. They played they played into peaceful maybe ten years ago in every Maryland fan. I knew suddenly remembered that game and not. Well, if you're Maryland good memories are few and far between. At the time. Dick modular ski. Again, his brother ad is playing at Maryland. He's trying to decide where he wants to go. Jim Tatum was the coach at Maryland. And dick told Tatum that he wanted to go to Notre Dame. Tatum's reply to dick was it only priest and lawyers went to Notre Dame. He didn't think dick was smart enough to be a lawyer. And he knew sure knew it wouldn't be a priest. So dick followed Ed to Maryland and turned out to be not only an all American himself. But he won the outland trophy at Maryland in nineteen fifty two. So we remember dick Najah loose key. And. While we're in the midwest. Bill Froehlich another. Credible lineman and offense lineman at Pitt died tragically just a few days ago at the age of fifty six. Bill Froehlich like I mean, he's the guy that was so good. They invented pancake. Block right pancake. Block was a was a term that was conjured up by the Pittsburgh sports information office to try and quantify. Exactly what it was that. He did. And as a result finished in the top ten in Heisman vote a couple times an offensive lineman. Even it's hard for me to even believe that. But but yeah. So thank you for the pancake block and an offensive lineman to this day should think Bill Froehlich four he will forever. Carry the torch for for offense of Lyman when it comes to receiving votes for the Heisman. Yeah. No. He was he was terrific player. And there was a stream of good. Good offense lineman or really Lyman on both sides of the ball who came out of pit in the eighties and Froehlich one of the more memorable ones. Tommy McDonald was a start Oklahoma in the fifties, bud. Wilkinson's greatest teams a lot of people believe to this day. Tommy McDonald should have won the nineteen fifty-six Heisman. Oklahoma beat Notre Dame that year forty to nothing. Oklahoma went ten in that year. Notre Dame went to and eight that year in Paul Horning of Notre Dame who three three touchdowns and thirteen interceptions in that too and eight and won the Heisman Trophy. Macdonald did win the Maxwell award that year given out by the club in Philadelphia. Tommy McDonald in nineteen fifty six. Ran for twelve touchdowns caught four touchdowns and threw three touchdowns and. The two things I stand out to me about him. One was that he was a precursor of the Mohammed Ali modern athlete in the sense that he was cocky, and at a time when humility was one of the prize personality traits in a an athlete. Tommy McDonald was not afraid to to does own horn. And it drove his teammates. Crazy. Drove bud Wilkinson crazy. But he was always asking for the ball. Always wanting to score touchdowns. He would keep up on who had how many touchdowns on the team, but he was an incredible player fast quick in fearless..

"Your host Ivan Mays L. Welcome back the campus conversation. It's Tuesday, November twenty seventh twenty eighteen Ivan Maysville here as manager said, and if if I'm even more unintelligible than usual, it's because I just spent an hour and a half in dentist chairs, so not only as my mouth numb. But I'm I'm mad at everybody. So let's have a happy show. Joining me today Heather din it live from somewhere in Texas. Hello, heather. Hey, I'm not there yet. I'll be darned Friday either Friday to watch the MAC in the Pac twelve they still count. Okay. I just assume that whenever the committee meets your within one hundred feet, or is there a reserve restraining order now have you been not to be there. We'll get to that the first in the last. Okay. All right. And joining me and joining other in the studio staring. Josh macrey, Brad Edward tiller bread. Actually. I choose a chair Ivan that's facing in the opposite direction of Josh. So I don't have to don't blame them. I don't blame him. He doesn't wanna look at me. Look at the wall. Win win. The next time. We stare at each other. It will be for that chocolate eating contest cells. Right. Yeah. We're just getting geared up for that. That's right. There's a chocolate eating contest someone's trying to set it up. Yeah. Yeah. We talked about it the day before thanksgiving. All right. I'm sorry. You the podcast when you're not on it. Yeah. We have podcast when I'm we'll never mind. Okay. So we've got a lot to talk about today as you can imagine not only coaching carousel. But as as Heather pointed out, the committee has its penultimate meeting tonight or releases its penultimate rankings tonight, which everyone wants to know who will be number four and important press conference in Chapel Hill taking place momentarily all of that when we get out of the tunnel. Time did come out of the tunnel on campus conversation. Those guys chaining we bad got to get about the cigarettes. They wouldn't cough as much choking on the dry ice. Maybe that's it. Okay. So coaching carousel. News Mack Brown being introduced in Chapel Hill. For the second time. As head coach of the tar heels. I was looking this up before we were on. He's not even the not only is he not even be I head coach to return to coast tarheels. He's not even the second. Both. There have been two men who have done that Carl slavishly being one and Jim Tatum the other both revered names in Chapel Hill the guys yesterday broke down in detail max return game. I don't wanna get into that. But a couple of other pieces of news on the coaching carousel one man who appears not to be interested in returning to coaching be at Oklahoma or anywhere else. And I just say Oklahoma because he would be returning there. But they don't need a coach Auburn does and Bob stoops's name came up and for the four thousand time Bob stoops said, he's not interested. Heather I think I detect a pattern in Bob stoops's career. He was not interested in leaving Oklahoma. He's not interested in going anywhere else. And yet. People at Auburn seem to think that if they just start talking about it. He will magically be interested. I've an what's really ironic about all of this going on a year ago about a year ago at this time, I was on the phone with Bob stoops talking about how difficult it is for coaches to know when is the right time to step down. And how hard it is. And how most of them typically coach longer than they should. And instead of leaving on a great note like stoop said they leave on a downward spiral more. So like, Bobby Bowden dead. And when I was writing that story for ESPN dot com. Guests who I called about knack Brown? And I said MAC, but you know, why is it so hard for coaches to just stop coaching, and we talked a little bit about that. And and in studio on Sunday when all this North Carolina stuff is going on and said, hey, coach remember that story..

At the mosaic new wells plant in mulberry, mosaic kept the full extent of the spill a secret for nineteen days and only acknowledged it to the public after local news reported it in a statement, the company apologized for not providing information sooner. But for some the potential benefits of phosphate mining outweigh the environmental concerns. Jackie's own circle h ranch in north Florida on the border of Bradford and union counties was born here on this property in nineteen thirty three. My father owned it. And my grandfather owned before him. He's in Greece's cattle and corn. But he's known for a long time that his land is rich in phosphate. He recently formed a company in order to mind his land and four neighbouring properties dish county and the adjoining county that dish phosphates in poor county. And I came to the conclusion that we would work roughly two hundred people a tremendous economic impact on the two counties. That is only ish reason I decided to phosphate. Phosphate mining might benefit some workers in this economically depressed area of Florida, political activist. Jim Tatum says that the environmental cost of a false fate. Mine is not worth a few jobs. They live on the river. And what happens Bradford Union County will affect my river couldn't affect my river. Jim Tatum lives next to the Santa Fe river, a small tributary to the Santa Fe, divides, Bradford and union counties and it flows right through the proposed mining area. I think it was nineteen seven they had a spill on the north shore of the river. The spill kill millions of fish wildlife crabs fifty million gallons of wastewater from phosphate fertiliser plants spilled into the Alafaya river and it killed almost everything. More than a million fish for fifty miles downstream. Courtney Snyder who lives right next to the proposed mining area is also concerned. Nobody nobody wants a phosphate mine here. Well, it's you've got you've got the dust. The I guess you could call it radioactive 'cause the rate on whatever else is found in the or my four year old has asthma. And I'm one hundred yards away from the proposed property..
