Five Ways to Relax
"I lo- people on the youtube soon. Yo coming to you throw a Jonah growth in an empty hall and again I feel a bit like a food talking to Nobody feels really weird. Maybe of you are by yourself right now. Pause the video and just talk to talk to a wall or something and you get some idea of how I feel or you're in a car. Just talk to your steering wheel something like that. That's a bit awkward. But just imagine people listening to this and Ought to give this talk yesterday. And then My first initial reaction was. Are we still doing? Those talks aren't enough talks on the Internet by now. Because I've been away for a while and I didn't realize we're still doing these talks For having to do with the corona virus and at some point you. You've heard dot at like me. I've heard also money talks over the years. Its onboard. You're like I don't need any more talks. Why why do we need the talks to keep coming but don't get me wrong? I'm happy happy to we talking here although talking to To An empty hall. But it's I'm happy to do it but sometimes you like do we need to do. We need to keep expanding our knowledge. Do we need to always keep hearing more and more stuff about Dhamma or do we just reach a point where we just practice instead and just let go of all these stocks? I like all the Buddhist tech sweater. Monks nuns delay people. They would come to to Buddha and just give me a short teaching and With that Short teaching just practice and they just do that short teaching and went to a quiet place. Practice for a long time and And they usually vacation a light and just just by debt. So that shows you that. We don't need too much teachings and as I said sometimes it's just Maybe the Dhamma teachings are more sometimes for entertainment instead of information and sometimes also the opposite. You get so many talks. Catch a bit boring after a while. I mean Jim Rome. He's a great teacher but sometimes I just like Not a not a talker. I JUST WANT TO MEDITATE. Stay in my heart but Usually always still funny to talk. Extenua- reminds me of Of A little store your little joke. Actually that I heard a while ago and I've been teaching That I've been telling people and it's about the man who goes through the doctor and comes through the doctrine says Dr. My heart is burning and on my stomach. It's not good. It's like painful and my knees doctor. Can you please check me out? I don't think I'm very well. Doctor says okay. Do sit over here. I'll show we. He takes his art fame. You know what do you call it? Stethoscope or something too hard. You take this Paul's blood pressure. All these things that doctors do and then the doctor says sorry. I've got some bad news for you. Oh no the man. What is it? The doctor sure you've only got six more months to Leith. Demand is no only six months. Doctor Dr What can I do? And the doctor says what you can do is listen to talks by the monks of the voting Monastery and non of the W. A. Especially the talks of junior and imagine like. Why will that make me leave any longer will make me better and the doctor says it will make you any better. But at least it'll be the longest six months of your life and I just love that because you know sometimes all talk stuff. It just gets a bit boring. But it's like when you meditate. Sometimes it's the opposite doesn't seem long at all at the same time seems to fly by like this morning. I woke up really early. And you started. Meditating straight away Because I felt really awake all right usually when I wake up and meditated for maybe two hours or something just flew by my alarm clock to go for The work matching went Yeah felt like only like forty minutes or something or less even so this is something something shows you that meditation can be really enjoyable because you know when you enjoy yourself. That's one time flies down. They say that's at least that's Dr Expression kitching expression as well time flies by. That's right when you're having fun but maybe there is some truth. Actually in doctor's advice of listening to dumber talks to make you Physically better as well. I'm just making a bit of a joke out of it. I think that can be some truth in it as well because meditation we can learn to. Relax. Our body undermined especially in relation of the body is so so good for Helping you to fight illnesses and also to prevent illnesses in the first place

"I am Jim Rome welcome back good to have you here halfway through it we'll have a conversation with James Devlin momentarily he had a great run in the NFL he's got three championship rings to show for it and a great backstory too so how the four in the mean in a moment in the meantime phone lines are open one eight hundred six three six eight six eight six Dana white is going to join me at eleven forty Pacific time two forty eastern time down to the final segment a program and if you are C. two forty nine scheduled to come off this weekend as mentioned we're joined right now by three time Super Bowl champ a pro bowler five career TD's undrafted out of brown back in twenty ten he announced his retirement last week James Devlin is my guest James great have you on first off how are you and your family doing in the middle of this pandemic we're good we're good you know we we kind of worked out our kids are young too young to really even know what's going on and they're not missing school into my oldest is four so reporter Amanda preschool after the season ended anyway so we're we're at a pretty good spot man and I were hanging tight just like everybody else and just kinda Hopin and listen to this and it's real soon here here here James Allen joining us good here so last week you announced that you were retiring which brings to an end an amazing career if you were to take me back when you're playing college football brown what kind of thoughts we having about a career after college I mean we think about the NFL or thinking about something else are you know our words I was it's always been a dream of mine since I was you know a seven year old kid first up and all that do you know to play professional football make it a career so I would definitely you know willing to do my due diligence and trying to try to see you know how far football could take me and then but you know the the situation was pretty pretty dire at that point you know senior year I had a had a tryout Cleveland Browns under rookie mini camp and even make it to the third day of it they they let me go to practices and then you know I was just kind of like contemplating my comment maybe maybe football isn't what was in the cards maybe I gotta you know try to use my degree lineup engineering job interviews and stuff like that and then and then you know one thing led to another and I just kinda kept pursuing that that calling that I had inside me to keep playing football and things worked out James talent joining us thing certainly did work out now you have the engineering degree from Brown so there are a lot of things you can do with that one of the options though was to play for the Oklahoma City yard dogs in the arena league how did that opportunity come to be and why was that the path you chose well that was a that was actually just I was I was recently graduated from brown I'm living at home with my parents and like I said trying to trying to kind of figure out you know what my next move is going to be and it was actually the opportunity was presented to me through a Facebook message I just got kind of a random a random message from this guy Ian Harris who is who works for the for the Oklahoma City our dogs I've never heard of the team before I responded to it and it seemed like a legitimate thing so I down Oklahoma City did a try out and they they ended up signing me that day and spent the better parts of like six weeks there played and won one game against the pulse of towns and then the season ended and I was right back we're back home and yes those kind of just like a totally random thing I mean it was it was my first crack it and the that professional football and he knows who they eye opening experience this is Lee and then the journey continues because girl from Oklahoma City in the arena league to Florida in the U. S. L. is it true your agent told the team that you were a fullback and if so when was the last time you actually played fullback yeah I'd I'd probably took maybe a handful maybe five or six snaps at fullback in college a brown we went through this phase where we were kind of we put our plan Harvard and we we kind of re wrote a play a book a little bit and just put put the ball in some really really good athletes hands and we just kind of right ran the ball over and so they put me a full breakfast for handful plays just like real easy assignment and that was that was it outside of maybe like in the same situation in high school so prior to prior to going down to Florida I had probably played maybe fifteen snaps in my life at full back and then and then you know I but I I've I felt like I knew enough about the game of football and seen enough that I could you know run some routes and catch balls and and try to put myself in the best position to be a fall back down there and yes so I went down tried out they never asked me really you know what position I played before and so I just never never is one of those on ask don't tell corporate things and and again that that all kind of worked out in my favor James talent joining us and any a chance for the Bengals you were cut near the end of training camp at twenty twelve if I skip ahead alternately you signed with the patriots what were the early days like with the patriots are you know that I was I was on the practice squad for all of all of for for all of that year except for four weeks and so is a lot of just trying to kind of drink out of a fire hose men I mean there was such a big you know storied organization and learning from like some of the best coaches ever do it yeah sure in the locker room with some of the best players to ever do it so I was just trying to be a sponge and learn as much as I could I knew that my opportunity was was gonna column I decided to do my you know do my work and kinda you know just wait for that time to come and then you know really was that following training camp when I really got my opportunity to compete for a position on the team and so I just knew that you know in those first you know that first year on the practice squad I decide to learn as much as I could and try to get as comfortable in the organization with the playbook and you know with my teammates as I could and and I know capitalize on that and no eight years later hi it it went pretty well yeah and and spend as much time as you possibly could the weight room because you're known as a monster there used to smoke guys like rob Gronkowski any other tight ends when it came to lifting wrong set of you quote he's a different creature when it comes to that he's a beast he can put up weights left and right no matter what it is he's just tossing it up and it's special maybe that is serious praise government got like rock what is it about the weight room in lifting that you like so much you know I was I was never really the most gifted athletes I was never the fastest I was never as you know the biggest but one thing I could always control was my strength and you know so I I need a kind of a test a lot of my success in the game of football to my work in the weight room and to just like put in the sweat equity you know towards my career so it was one of those things that you know it I I took a lot of pride in it because it got me to the to the point of giving my getting my first opportunity in the in the NFL so when I was in the NFL and playing for the patriots and everything I had to show my respect that and into my eyes strong respected to the way wrong is just gone in there and try to get after it and you know let them touch ready you can and so it became a it became you know really really a lot of fun and then there was some so my teammates and just now on this can I give me head as you can possibly get but you know those it was this is something that I really really enjoyed that so you're such a big passion of mine is training and you know I always felt like it was it was just doing something I love and and it got me to that point nine and I really appreciate everyone that surely room with because none of those were some really good times James talent is joining us and then last training camp you're dealing with a painful sensation in your arm how would you describe the feeling and what did you think it was at the time our role you know it was it was a unique feeling it was kind of one of the things that this only this thing I don't know if you know if everyone has had that is pretty common in the game of football and then it was just one of those things that just wouldn't go away it kind of kept coming and coming you know the severity was getting worse and worse and the frequency was increasing so is one of those things I just thought it was a number I was just haven't you know heightened sensitivity to it because it has things in the past and they're you know they're a little more susceptible to doing having it happen again so I kind of thought it was going down that path and then you know once I got checked out things so you know got a little bit more serious but no so is one of those things it was just like a nervy Phelan into law sensation and like that burn type of thing that you get with stingers and yet this kind of got a little bit more complicated once I got everything tested out well then you tell my guy Ross Tucker that's one thing doctors did say was you'll probably be fine but quote just don't run into people with your face and quote obviously James the thing is when you play full back your job is to run into guys with your face so when you're presented with that information what was that like to hear what you think that it was there was a I was an emotional moment because like I said before I wasn't really sure of the scope of my injury and so it was it was kind of like a blind side type deal and and there was that was as a tough pill to swallow man I mean I have my wife and my daughter there was was something that was really special because it was just an immediate sense of clarity of of what happened what really matters and and in the world for me and so nervous it was definitely like you know on welcome news at the time hours how the motion I didn't really know you know what to what to make of it and then but yeah I like it I mean like I said the name out of respect I have for the game and the way I the way I grew up playing the game was was you know stick my face in there and and inviting contact and so I knew that I couldn't you know knowing what I knew about my body after after seeing those doctors I just knew that I couldn't you know play the game with the have a reckless abandon and I grew to play to play with and so it's out of respect for the game I knew that it was it was time to hang it up so when the moment comes and you remember of course you've got a wife and three kids how much of the announcement then is about walking away from football or is it about walking towards them and choosing them it's it's definitely both but I I mean it's definitely more you know choose my family over everything because that is something that that will always be my number one priority is my family and and has their well being and you know I need to be to be able to provide for them for three years the calm not only monetarily but not just emotionally physically been there and and you know spiritually been with them and so you know there's it was really it was a tough decision for me personally because I've been playing the game of football for a quarter century and you know it became such a big big part of my life but you know my my wife and my three kids now although I've only been with my wife now for eight going on nine years and then my kid my oldest kid is for so although you know my time in football was was you know over double the amount of time that I've never been a part of my family they mean the absolute most to me and so it was a really you know came down when it's once it came down to it and they're really became an easy decision I mean my family is everything however it'll never be different was amazing journey and I start a new one.

"Mike McCarthy You know just try. Just try to spend a week with me and my team at intermediate to do the marketing and business strategy for your business just kind of try to put on the line so feeling pretty good about my experiences doing quite well. That's awesome Gary joining us all right so draft day and your beloved jets do have the eleventh pick in the first round. What are you looking for the jets to do with that pick? You want them to use it. You want them to trae down and address a number of hose. What would you like to see them? Do I would like to see them down. I think this is you know I've been in the sports representation business with my brother. Aj being or sports. The last four years and I'm an avid fan. I've been following the draft for twenty five plus years. I think this receiver draft is got parallels to twenty fourteen receiver draft. It could could end up being the best one ever. We need receivers bad Robbie Andersen obviously signing Carolina. So I do want the receivers but I don't want CD at eleven Even though he's a he seems to be a really great talent. I I want the kid. Becton at Louisville left tackle there. I probably settle for any of the top. Four left tackles there. If I'm being honest 'cause I've watched enough film to go with my guests but I do. Love Beckons upside of looked at him carefully though. I do love. Usc Left Tackle Awesome Jacksonville. I think it'd be leader We do have to. We do. Have some We have two third round pick so we've got four and top one hundred but I'll take more joe. Douglas has a real job to do. Unfortunately the cabinet or last. Gm didn't want to be all time worse jobs over five year period and GM history with his long contracts and is drafting capability and so just got a lot of work. We have a lot of free agents at the end this upcoming season at the end of it. So there's a lot to lock in. I prefer trading out of eleven going into the twenties loading up and going ham on the rest of the strap because I think all times rath and I believe in our scouts that Joe's put in place that I believe in Joe and I think we'll do well in the late rounds which I think we're going to be the most interesting late rounds ever because the team's thirty visits weren't had this year because a co there's just small town small school kids are GonNa slide. There's a ton of talent there as we've seen. I think it's GonNa be one of the more interesting drafts to look at. I predict things like a hall of famers in the fifth round. If you told me that happened in this strap I would understand that Because of the way this process went Gary joining us and then Gary on the other side of that. Venus sports has a number clients in this year's draft so what's draft day like for you in Asia and the rest of the team? It's pretty hectic. I mean most of our guy you know we have darnold homes from UCLA. Who's a day to guy to tomorrow is GonNa be exciting to see where he goes? The March giardi about our eyes are projected to be three guys. A Saturday is going to be key. Insanity So you know. Every year is different right. Josh Jackson a couple of years ago was the day one guy he actually slipped out to. That was a tough day for all of us. You know sitting in the Green Room. Not Getting ticked. Never Fun but Josh is such a resilient kidney what the packers early around to going through his his career and so every every draft is different. We have two quarterbacks that we think are sneaky this year. Mcdonnell the kid from Hawaiian even montage from Colorado the way the. Nfl is with young quarterbacks. Now I don't any homework just mentioned I think is going is the prototypical need in the secondary and the new. Nfl speed-wise some of his tape against game yet against Hollywood Brown two years ago. It was really intriguing to watch so just super excited about it. You know. There's a couple of kids that I think are going to go. Undrafted your Kid Nigel. Kilby who's got an incredibly interesting story that I think makes him a tight end. Ud Up day or seventh-round steel and then it's like you know the the. The agents are insane texting with the special teams coach. They're texting with the head coach with the GM the scouts. It's superfund for when your favorite passionate world growing up has now become something you're on the inside up. It's pretty. It's pretty intense. But I remind people if you're listening something I didn't know until I got into the business. No no no energy is ever going to four. Cgm's to do they`re. They're making their decisions. So what you're doing is you're trying to give information you're not selling 'cause everyone's selling they're making their picks their jobs from the line but it's a it's a hectic day and then the other thing is when your kids get picked. You're finding out a good twelve minutes eight minutes. 'cause there's a solid delays. So you know it's Kind of knowing something early plus. I'm such an insane jets fan. Thank God this hasn't happened yet but we have thirteen kids. I argue that will have eight to ten drafted this year so ups the ante. We still haven't had a Patriot drafted you know in some desperately worried about their Jim. My greatest sports. I'm not kidding Jim. I'm not doing this. I'm I'm I the relationship you know. You got a kid who you fall in love with the family. This is deep is real thoughts. You know their mom and I'm telling you right now. One of our kids goes to patriots. I'm done I tell the kids in the process again. You're going to be there for me. I'm like attracted by the Patriots. You know yes unless you get drafted by the Patriots. So I'm worried about that this weekend Jim. You'll feel better gary. Brady's Gone Gronk has gone so that helps he really quickly. Yeah right you had a sit down my guy at my let recently and I think the two of you guys are really really good at this time or and asking you before you go would. Would you say to somebody right now? Gary who is listening? Who MAY HAVE LOST THEIR JOB? And it's feeling really down in really hopeless. There's so much so a before I spit out what I have to say. It's all contextual and there's no one size fits all but he was what I will say. The reality is life is completely based perspective. No matter how crappy it is you could decide that you have a ton of stuff in your house and you can sell it on. Ebay and craigslist and facebook and and pick back up to three months worth of your income. Do you have the humility for that when I said that you like whatever I get it but you have the humility. 'cause it's real 'cause. I ten thousand people emailed me that they followed that model number. Two social media may content write articles and make videos for your Lincoln profile right now. People are watching. There's tons of companies on the offense and the number three seventy five percent of people. Jim didn't like their job to begin with. Maybe this is the greatest gift of the one that classic one step backwards and two steps forward. This is gonNA require humility. You might have to give up your fancy car. You might even have to give up your fancy house but as long as you don't care about other people's judgment who don't even know you and have nothing to actually do with your life and you actually focus under interest. NFL Draft 2020: Packers blindsided Aaron Rodgers with Jordan Love pick
"Operate Jacobin the NFL draft came off without a hitch last night and was a welcome relief in rounds two and three you'll be tonight but this week's event as certainly re energize the football fan commissioner Roger Goodell was a guest on CBS this morning is hoping the NFL can start on time but the draft continues tonight last night's first round didn't have any surprises up top but they came later in the evening the Packers at the biggest eye opening move trading up to take Utah state quarterback Jordan love Green Bay is coming off a conference championship game appearance but instead of adding a weapon for Aaron Rodgers of which there were several possible wants to add they didn't step decide to draft his successor GM Brian Goodwin said it came down to finding the top player on their board Rogers was drafted late in the first round fifteen years ago and sat behind Brett Farr for three years perhaps the Packers will follow that same plan with love certainly needing seasoning after a down year with the Aggies the Bengals let off the draft by taking Heisman Trophy winner Joe borrow as expected all the number one pick in tonight's second round as well some of the other winners from last night's first round include the Miami Dolphins went three picks in the opening round and still got to a talk by lower thought was the tank for two up but that seemingly went out the window when they won five of their last nine games but they still got their guy at number five the Alabama quarterback is downplayed concerns over his injury saying he's fully recovered from hip surgery they also drafted some protection selecting offense of tackle Austin Jackson out of U. S. see the box also beefed up their offense of line moving up a spot to take some protection for Tom Brady and I was tackled Tristen worst tiki and Tierney will have complete coverage of tonight's festivities beginning

O. immediate have take dot com trust the process all right so the meantime let me go off the board for a minute it's been a topic but it is stoner Christmas and I want to know is that for the first time ever in its illustrious one hundred and twenty four year history as an example the Boston Marathon is not going off today as scheduled and that's obviously because every event involving more than ten people is currently on pause while the globe works together to stop the spread of the corona virus every event is on hold except for one because while the world may have stopped spending it sure is how has not stopped smoking to which I say Mary stoner Christmas heads happy for twenty and your highest of the high holidays is finally here and nothing can stop it not even this pandemic and while there may not be a marathon today there is a worldwide smoke us on to honor the waldos and their secret three digit code for sneaking off to get lifted back in nineteen seventy one know your history heads now I can't even pretend to sit here and say how this year is all that different from the four twenties in the past few years because it's really not everything bacon nation is all about is actually being legally mandated by the federal government right about now think about it it's not a more willing group of people in the entire world who are happy to stay home watch movies in order delivery then heads down stoners that's not some kind of sacrifice it's a sacrifice for the rest of us but to them it's a dream day it's the best day ever it comes at a perfect time because right now on April twentieth twenty twenty the Ganja is now legal in forty seven different states and all weed shops have been deemed an essential business Matt Hey like dat team bake you wanna talk about flipping the script weed shops first of all there are weed shops second of all they are deemed essential you want to talk about flipping the script it's not that long ago that the feds would bust into a feed shop or growth operable operation sees everything and lock everybody up now those very same outfits are not only being broken up they're being protected by law and you're being told to stay home and fire up the volcano vaporizer I think Charlie Sheen coined a word for that the winning so not only is the law on your side practically everybody else's as well from Tommy Chong to even Jocko Willink American bad **** Jocko tweeted a pic of his watch at four twenty this morning and captioned it time to smoke some burpees and so even a former C. Where Will Cam Newton Land?
"Another quarterback that's out there that hasn't found a home that I'm surprised by that the charge and go get is gather your teammates with cam Newton how do you feel about what it will what do you think I think cam Newton is about to really dominate somewhere but it seems like there's potentially no suitors for the guy what the hell's going on there I I think it's a bad timing thing right like there you know if everybody would know that cam Newton was going to be a free agent when they ought when the market opened up I think he's gone first day right but the fact that nobody knew Caroline was like always will be our quarterback and then on a random Tuesday they signed teddy Bridgewater like the second day of the trip three eighty is the advice I woke now next you know can't do you go see a trade war everybody knows there's no trade value because it I won't give up anything that you know you're not gonna keep both these guys we know you're going to release them in another week and now everybody's on their quarterback we know that Miami wants to go young they're going to draft charges they're definitely going to draft a quarterback and they have Tyrod Taylor to stand going to be so where's the fit like you will need the quarterback Cincinnati has any dog just sitting over there but we all know they're going take Joe burrow so what is the fifth I'm looking forward to a camp going to do I think this is uncomfortable position for camp but I think just like camp done is every every part of his life he's always just kind of figured it out and became it became a star just like everything else and I think at some point he's probably going to maybe have to take up a role as a backup guy like Taney deal did knowing that Hey I'm coming here to compete and eventually it which is going to take a really strong locker room hi who's going to be able to take take a lot more more we can't Nunez like possible that backup quarterback waiting right yeah like who's gonna be the star quarterback that's comfortable with that right that's another conversation yeah because you got the quarterbacks wide will get more interview opportunities and is going dressed better than the starting quarterback is gonna be bigger stronger on all these other things like that's a really tough spot to be fourteen to bring in somebody as well so I think that's also playing a part of it is well is that how can we take this on and not looking still look like we're confident in the guy that we have but we're gonna bring in cam Newton anyway and this is not Camdenton is nothing like Tim TiVo I intend to vote there's nothing like Colin Kaepernick but this is the conversation that was happening about all the your backup quarterback came a massive distraction for your team because the quarterback room the quarterback position is a big deal if you have somebody in a room that's a distraction to your team whether it's tam calling then candidate might say because he's a massive personality and very good at football we go to football having that'll be a potential distraction he could see how teams would be like at we're not we're not we can't put ourselves in that

Ivy League denies graduate eligibility for spring athletes
"In retrospect the ivy league's decision to call off its basketball tournament in the first days of the coronavirus spears was white I don't think yesterday's decision will look good after any amount of time the ancient eight will not adjust its rules allow grad students to compete athletically that means that the NC double late this season to restore this year eligibility for spring sports athletes doesn't really apply to the Ivy League current seniors now have two options withdraw from school immediately then resume their studies I'm playing career in the fall we're transfer and play their final season somewhere else the Ivy League embrace of history and tradition is usually endearing but not now in this extreme situation it's better to be accommodating menace
"My name is billy allman and I am a biology inspired storyteller and designer so I look at organisms in nature I get an understanding of how they innovate how they have an innovative and I look for opportunities to apply that to challenges at the human scale. Wow now I regret to say I I heard about you last year at the blackened design conference that goes on at Harvard Graduate School of design. You are on this panel with actually with two other people who've been on the show are Emelin Ciano and Jim Rome Harris. Yes so I know that the panel was about like equity and justice in technology and media. Remember you gave this example about a slime mold that I thought I was sitting in the back. Like wow that is really dope. How would you heard about the event before you spoke there? I've been trying to go to the event trying to attend the event since the first conference and my wife. Actually told me about opportunity when they started looking for speakers for the last conference so she actually reached out to them and said. Hey check out this guy named Billy Allman. You might be good for your conference and then they reach out to me with an inquiry about participating. Nice. Yeah I I mentioned before we saw record how your wife had. She reached out to me to like years and years ago about starting podcast. So that's dope that. She's been proactive in helping out like that. She's the most self actualized person I've ever met. It does wonders for my career. So I read where you refer to yourself as a bio mimicry advocate and practitioner. So of course I have to ask I feel like you probably get asked this on every podcast but what is bio mimicry? And how do you use it in your life? So bio mimicry comes from this term called biomet nieces which translates to imitate life and essentially. It's the idea of turning to nature for inspiration on how to solve problems if you think about the world in which we live in every single organism on this planet whether human or bacteria or mammals all of us have to deal with the same conditions of sunlight cyclical processes ebbs and flows in in resources competition. Environmental Factors that. Play into how we live our lives. And so when you think about the fact that we all experience these things and we think about the fact that a lot of these organisms have been around longer than we have. You start to see that. There's all of these existing methods and strategies for solving problems that exist in the natural world. And so what bio mimicry does is we study these organisms and then we find kind of the underlying tactic or strategy or function. That's at play at how these organisms are solving their problems. And then we apply that to parallel problems that humans face to give you an example. Velcro is an example of the Bio mimetic process at play the designer of Velcro. He was a Swiss gentleman who would take his dog for walks right and every time that he would come home he would find these little spherical seeds attached to the furthest dog so he took the seeds under his microscope and saw that there was these curly little hooks on the end of of each strand of the seed and he realized that this is a great way that this seed attached to animals curly little hooks and that became the inspiration for Velcro. So if you think about how velcro looks when you look at it up close. It's all of these little strands and curly strings on one side with I wish counterpart on the other so velcro came from the strategy of the C. Which is called a bird seed to attach to animals? In order to have the animals carry the seeds to locations where they might potentially grow. Oh interesting yeah. I've heard I've heard something about that with velcro now. Now there's I guess there's different types of Velcro. Now where the I guess the matting isn't as plush or the hooks aren't as deep but it is still based off of that same premise. Of of what you've seen in nature you're able to recreate that in like an industrial setting exactly so given that example like I feel like that's something we probably as kids just running around and field and stuff have like kind of instinctively picked up. You know you run around and you've got grass and all kinds of stuff stuck to your pants and your shirt and your hair or anything like that. When did you sort of I learn about bio mimicry? When did you? I know this was something that you were into. I actually came across by mimicry as result of Hurricane Katrina and by that I mean after Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans. I was architecture student at Howard University at the time and after the storm hit and after the manmade disaster that followed there was a lot of students. Obviously not only at Howard but around the world but at Howard. There are a lot of students who wanted to do something. Just how can we help about five hundred students from how university drove down to New Orleans and to the Gulf coast to just find ways to volunteer to help during our spring break and singing? What took place up. Close had like the most transformative experience. It was the most transformative experience I've ever had. Just witnessing you know people who look like you people who look like me in the conditions that that that disaster left that community and so as an architecture student I was just curious like how do we avoid this from happening. How do we create spaces and communities where this event is not taking place and especially knowing that climate change is not going away that you know especially coastal cities and people In low income neighborhoods are going to be? The most affected are the most affected by climate change. How do we prevent these kinds of things from happening again? And in in trying to find answers to that question I came across this book called Bio Mimicry. Innovation inspired by nature which was written by a woman named Janine Banias and after I read that like everything for me change. It became my my design philosophy. Nice so once you learn the well hold on. Let me switch gears a little bit because you mentioned climate change and here in Atlanta. We have a Museum of design here and twenty twenty. The theme that they have for this year is the Year of climate change. Actually by the time this episode airs there will actually be an exhibit there about bio mimicry is titled Learning From Nature. The future of design was developed in collaboration with the Bio Mimicry Institute. I'm really interested in checking that out because I heard about that right around the same time that I was at blackened design and I was like I need to learn more about this because the examples that you were giving during that panel talk really kind of inspired me to think about what are ways. That designers could possibly use nature for design for technology for creating more equitable futures. Which will get to you know later on in the conversation but I wanted to to mention that. So let's switch gears here a bit because you talked about Howard University so I wanna go back a little bit further than that. Where did you grow up? I was a military Brat. Growing up my dad was in the army and my mom worked for the Department of Defense and so I was born in Germany. I think we move back to the states when I was gonNA say like one. Maybe two bounced around several states. Texas lived in Georgia. A little bit lived in Maryland before I went to Howard lived in South Korea and then back to Germany. So just all over the place which was a fun experience especially when you get to come across kids who have like friends that they've known since they were like in diapers. And you know I have a new best friend every two years so that was always a fun experience growing up with all of that travelling in like seeing the country seeing the world. How did that shape you creatively? Oh man made everything possible. It told me that there's more options than I think right away. And and it kind of had all these different flavors to you know the mix of how you can create something new by just introducing a new or different perspective on what you're trying to do. Does that make sense now? That makes sense because it's sort of like that added. You can't be what you don't see. Yeah so like the fact that you're able to see all of these different experiences different people different cultures etc like that all feeds into. You know just kind of who you are. Yeah and I gotTa tell you if there was one thing that really stuck out to me about the experience of all that travelling as a as a young kid was just the value of exposure. I mean like you say you don't know what you don't know once you're exposed to something it just reintroduce you to another level of possibilities right so I can't emphasize enough. How much exposure even in a lot of the work that I'm doing now. How big of a role that place.

the Utah Jazz he's a two time defensive player of the year a three time all defensive first team player yep you tied to a nineteen to record over the past twenty one games by averaging seventeen points sixteen rebounds two blocks into assist during that span he leads the NBA for the third straight season in screen SS was seven point seven per game he is second in the league in field goal percentage second in the league in rebounds per game thirty four double doubles this season in Utah is at home against Houston this evening we go bear is my guest Rudy is so nice to have you on how are you great are you good driving yep you know I want to talk about the amazing season you're having and how good your team is but I need to start with the passing of Kobe Bryant what was your reaction Rudy when you heard that terrible news yesterday in with the shark Norton photo booth we just found out about the practice and no we couldn't believe it we I mean there was a you know a big big silence and we know we will try to figure out if the news of a real and you know we found out a few minutes so that they were I was just a moment note make sure to take everything into perspective you know this is the legacy and and the impact it had we would be the four of we go there is joining us in fact in terms of perspective you tweeted yesterday quote enjoy every single day people we are always too worried about things are actually not that important life is precious you never know when it's going to end and quote so personally how are you going about processing all of this about what curry how you processing this how are you handling this I mean it is like I said you know the mix of pink mix would take about them also lost one of my one of my friends we could go in car accidents was stuck in you know you see people and all of a sudden the next day it it it just not here anymore and you know and you can do everything right you know it's you can even light testimony into all these things and you know and have a car accident on someone eating you or you know you just never know in life so it's you know it's all about enjoying in order to do the things every day and you know and so on to serve the people that you know make you better today such a great message would go very joining us so really you're coming off a win over the Mavericks on Saturday were you a twenty two points seventeen rebounds and five blocks you've got some really really good games in your career where is that one rank especially when you consider all the clutch moments did you have late in that game really like the fact that you know we we won the game the main thing you know we we didn't blow bit games but of this game but we we we we stick together and you know we'll go through to the claims on the straights defensively and offensively I think it was one of a you know most exciting means of of the season for sure we wanna moments was that block on the lawn right to lay up in the final thirty seconds that really was incredible it was unreal because even more than that was the build up to the block because you made sure that look it did not drive then you made sure that right didn't take a three and then you recovered to reject the lay up so what was going through your head on that entire sequence and then how good did it feel to hear the crowd respond the way they did chanting your name in showing you all about love I'm in the minds of those really to get a stop you know when we were down to so it's not like no we don't three and we're just going to give it a three we just do the one that has to do is call and you know we knew that they were going to look obviously so look at the bottom of it and then them no and then just you what to do and and try to add up and you know I was able to to to to make a play after getting beat up the Jew bone and you know and then after that later for those in and won the game so he was a it's gonna go month it's in those two go up and you know in one meadows in which is of this no the last minute in the last few minutes of the game only a select awareness and all focus is ready increase in the province so good at the end of games which I would go there now I know you're focused on winning a doing a whole lot of that lately going nineteen into as I mentioned in the last twenty one with your teammates reminding everybody did you belong the all star game your coach Quin Snyder said when it comes to the all star game quote to be honest to me it's one of those things it's just self evident end quote I understand the you're not focused on that but what would it mean to you to go to the all star game this year I mean obviously we would mean a lot and no it just because it's something that no one would be best to boiling come to the league of the kid for the day that Noah Thomas as well I want to be at the microphone to be one of the best players in this league and I want to win the championship Nolan when the when we played with the pain of the team it's it's it's great to have guys that can you know represent represent outstanding in that kind of events of so we go there joining me for a few more moments you grew up roughly ninety minutes northeast of Paris so what was life like for you growing up you just touched on that but what was it like growing up and then what's it like now when you go home as an NBA star I mean what was it like growing up I mean I'm a really loves you know where a group of women among them no obviously a very humble beginnings but you know I think that's the reason I am William today you know already no enjoy every day the commonality you know enjoy the little things that we talked about earlier you know it's all about giving any can you half full nor for the people around you and and and you know for me that's why I'm so competitive Nora I just enjoy going out there much inmates and and you know I'm and try to win because it's you know it's really what what makes you feel alive and good of things we call them I guess all right final point into that point you in the rest of the team in a rolling it seems like from the outside I'm not there of course but from the outside looking in it seems like there's something really unique or special about this group how would you describe the chemistry of this team and what makes it special I mean I think it's it's it's ready like radio we really love each other not so to cool the you can tell that you know we we just enjoyed being lunch other and and you know and and and we got guys that just compare those guys that just want to win more than anything and well you know that your mindset and everyone is willing to sacrifice to the beautiful for the others to make the others better a mix you know he just raised into another level of them with the great courses and no one and the work in the world that we would be able to put in every day with a group of guys like that back care about winning you know you just you just feel like you're getting better and better every month and that's pretty much what we've been doing this year Utah's at home against Houston tonight nine PM eastern they have won nineteen of their last twenty one he is a two time defensive player of the year a three time all defensive first team are he's been playing lights out and absolutely should be an all star this year ready go bear my guess would be I know it's a difficult time in a tough time to do an interview I really appreciate you doing that thank you so much for having me a great day ready thank you we go there Utah Jazz double in all star no doubt my mind at a store what imagine the back in the day this was somebody who was actually over looked like on the way up was actually overlooked not anymore it has not been for quite some time right so our number three sets up like this I know a number of you have been on hold and are still on hold and I will get your telephone calls I do want to finish my thought site last hour or this past hour I had a number of sound bites and parts of interviews with della Kobe and some really serious and some are funny some on the radio program somewhere on the TV show okay more sound that I want to play from a podcast that we do a Kobe I thought Adrian was aroused he was amazing in describing what Kobe was like and his outlook in his view and again if you're a Laker fan and you in Los Angeles your Laker fan in your outside of Los Angeles this is a really difficult day and it's really difficult to explain to people who are not this town who do not have that kind of connection and I understand that I understand why you might not understand this but understand that in this town there is nobody like Kobe Bryant he was the preeminent LA athlete of the generation and to what his point there will never be another Laker like that again the fans will never connect with another Laker and a Laker will never connect with this city ever again anyway so you need because we saw him grow up I'm became as a teenager and spasms are career here and won championships here and did it a certain way yeah that would mean a great point to that Kobe like a lot of people like all of us was flawed to continue to try to get better and better and improve in recent years could tell how much you love and embrace being a father how much you loved embraced his daughter's like people stopping like yo yo coke coke you envy you can have a son like no I don't why for the legacy so we see a mom a junior its imam juniors right.
