Jaguars Trade QB Gardner Minshew to Eagles for 2022 Pick
Lawrence, Minshew Still Battling to Be Jacksonville Jaguars' Starting QB
"You to believe that there is an open quarterback competition between his top draft pick Trevor Lawrence and Gardner Minshew. There are dumb ideas, and then there's that sure smells like some college Bs, doesn't it? The kind of thing that might fly in Gainesville but not Jacksonville. You try that in the NFL, and it just sounds and feels amateurish. Jim Rome,

Jake Paul Wins Latest Boxing Match in First Round Against Ben Askren
"The fight last night. The trailer fight club is what Snoop Dog is calling it and I would literally I would play. Jake Paul knocks out An aspirin. Jake Paul is just that YouTube star who was like 15 million Instagram followers. Ben Aspirin is a former M M A fighter who I've never heard of before. And he made $500,000 for this fight against Jake Ball. $500,000. That's his biggest payday ever. And he's in his mid mid mid thirties like 35 36 something like that, right? Take Paul knocked about the first it was. I think it was 119 seconds under two minutes of the first round. I would play that we would play the play by play for you. Except it's nothing but F bombs. Take everything you think you think of her thought of in a boxing match and throw that the hell down out the window or down the toilet, flush it down the toilet. Snoop Dog and company are doing this broadcasters F bombs. There's profanity everywhere, so I wouldn't have. I think I'm gonna ask Anthony. Washington Football Team Wide Receiver Terry McLaurin On The Jim Rome Show
"We're joined right now by a receiver for the Washington football team. He has put up huge numbers already 87 receptions over 1100 yards receiving. He had four touchdowns last season in the post season, six more receptions 75 yards. He was a member of the All rookie team in 2019. He was Theseventies sixth pick overall in 2019 out of Ohio State. Washington was the NFC Eastern Division champs last season. Terry McLaurin is my guest, Harry. It's great to have you on. How are you? Hey, are you doing to meet you and then have me on your show, Terry. It's great to meet you. It's great to have you on the show. Thanks for doing this. Let's not would say to you and ask you what you've gotten up to so far in the off season, but I know one of the things Is you get on the golf course because I see it on Twitter. How are you hitting him right now? And when did you start playing golf for the first time? Uh, well, I've actually kind of just kind of start getting into golf. I've been a kind of a golf fan. You know, I've watched certain tournament over the course of my life and, um, you know, I found that golf is is another way of kind of unwind from playing football and relaxing and but also staying active, and some of that challenges you physically and mentally and I'm always looking for some way I could get better challenge myself. So, um What better way to find that out, then goal. You know as people that she is, my golf swing is not the best right now. But it's all about improvements. So I think I made a big jump in just a week, and I'm excited to see Where my game takes me next. Terry McLaurin joining us That's exactly the kind response I would expect from you knowing your process than where you go about your business. Now, if you and I were to go back to 2019 is a rookie. You had more than 900 receiving yards. Then you come right back in 2020, and you have more than 1100 receiving yards and you go to the post season when you and I know you're looking forward, But when you look back on 2020 and the season what sticks out to you the most I think just the challenges of the season. Um Just first and foremost, from the pandemic standpoint of, you know, being able to play a full season and then you know the ups and downs that we had, Um, you know, as a as a as a football team, you know, we start off slow, but we started getting our stride and We started getting a moment. Um and then you know, he started to notice that people are starting to respect the Washington football team or and, um you know, we go out there each and every day. The O worked hard for each other and try to win football games at the end of the day and You know, we're not just satisfied into the playoffs are next step is getting there and and winning. But, um, you know, we did something that should that would. This franchise has done in a little while and I feel like it gave us a little bit more men. I'm so the The number one thing that I kind of look back on this season is just ups and downs, but the growth that we made a team and myself individually in my second year, Terry McLaurin joining us, You know you mentioned the postseason. You suffer that high ankle sprain late the year and you went hard like you fought hard to get back on the field. How determined were you to get back in time for the postseason? And how critical was it to you to rejoin the fight with your teammates? Yeah, that was everything to me. Um, you know, not many people know I was dealing with two high ankle sprain at the time when my left and my right, But, um, you know, I didn't really use that as an excuse. I have plenty examples around my building's not use. Certain things or, you know, elements of the things you were going through as an excuse. And just try to put your best foot forward for the team with Coach Rivera battling cancer. I was coming back from his triumphant story s. Oh, there's plenty example so I could look to the Get added motivation and just seeing my teammates face when I'm on that football field, and, um, you know, being a captain, that young leader of the confidence that gives them when I'm on the football field. I wanted to continue that and not being out there with him when I was when I wasn't it hurt. You know what I mean? But at the end of day, um, injuries are part of the game. You just try toe, manage them and try to prevent them as much as you can. But You know, the whole time? I was in good hands with our training staff. And my only thought was just to get back and produce even if it was just to take a little pressure off our other skill players that get you know them Some cleaner looks. I was willing to do

Steelers' Defeat Was a Comeback Wrapped in a Comeback

NCAA plans to move entire 68-team basketball tournament to one city in 2021; discussing with Indianapolis
"Basketball. We're joined right now by a college basketball insider for CBS Sports host of the college Hoops today, podcast. Also in front of program. He is John Rothstein, Man. John, What's going on? How are you? Never better. Only great to be with you. Good to have you, John. Great to have you here. All right, so a lot going on the blade. John announced this morning that the tournament and CW tournament will be held in one location and that they are in talks with the city of Indianapolis. The host the entire 68 team event there. First of all, what is your initial reaction to that news? Proactive planning is always better than reactive planning. Jim and you have to sit your captain Dan Gavin, and everybody's the NC. Double A for this. We know that we're in uncharted territory. We know that we're in a once in a century type global pandemic. Now we're in a situation where we have a plan and after they're just hanging up On a call with then gather it. He made it very, very clear. And once the team heads to that area, where the NC double a permanent hold and the NC double agent endeavoring to lock up, according to get it, the city of Indianapolis as that host city by January, 1st. Once a team travels to that city, it will not be permitted to leave. Until that team is eliminated from the empty double a tournament. John Rothstein is joining US John the tournament has been scheduled to start in Dayton on March 16th and 17th. Do you still expected to start at that time? Or could you see it moving back at some point? You know, one of the things that's interesting. Jamie's Dan Gavitt said that you know, because of the different protocols that have to be in place in order to successfully pull off a tournament in a short period of time. The calendar may not be the same for March. Madness as it normally is. It's an in perfect year. It's an imperfect season. But the bottom line is this Jim at the end of the day, and I know I might be the perennial optimist. We see so many people so coming to the negativity that goes on in our world today because of obviously everything that is going on in our world today, But it is time like this. You have to look at the positive or their programs shut down in college basketball. Did a covert 19. Absolutely. Did the Ivy League cancel one of sport's last week to the cove in 19? Absolutely, but the facts of the fact. Over 90% of the Vision. One programs as of today are up and running, and the facts of the fact. There's going to be set back. There's going to be cancelation. But we're having a college basketball season and we're having an NC double A Parliament. If that doesn't get you excited seven days a week and twice on Sunday, I don't know what does
Chicago Bears-New Orleans Saints fight erupted after Javon Wims threw a helmet punch
"My thoughts on that Saints Bears game. And wins. Throwing not one but two punches to a guy wearing a helmet. So what's going through his head? What's going through his head. Why would you punch a guy in the head wearing helmets like the dumbest thing ever? The only thing dumber than that is doing it a second time. What could have prompted that? Why would you ever run up on a dude? And punch him in the helmet twice. Well, one explanation might be that it goes back to the previous Siri's. You see, after a play, there was some sort of exchange between whims and C. J. G. J. And while they were talking, CJ gj ripped the mouthpiece off of whims, his face mask and through it to the ground. Now that probably is over the line. Probably over the line isn't a reason to go debatable, but probably over the line. I gotta admit it's pretty funny. Somebody's not cracks me up him jerking that mouthpiece off his face mask and Troy to the ground actually made me laugh. For the record Tom Palace, Sarah reports. The whims told the Bears coach is that C J G. J spit on him as well during that exchange.

Jake Rome started school at Madison Today. University, Wisconsin Madison. He is now a sophomore. He's there. He's got a hybrid schedule. I think he will go to class physically, once a once a week. So let me welcome Everybody back to school. Second, I was open. I've got two interviews coming up in our number three. I've got third baseman Matt Chapman of the Oakland A's got Ella Chargers cornerback Casey Hayward. Got a podcast which don't do it now. Don't listen to George Brett podcast yet does to my podcast yet wait till I'm off the air If you don't mind. And then just kind of makes that in during your commute. You work out your weekend whenever you want to. Your telephone number is paid for. You know this. You still have to get through hawk like Hawk move from the front row to the back row. But he's still answering your telephone calls. You still need to get through him in order to get to me to get on the air. Follow me on Twitter at Jim Rome email made Rome ROM E and have take dot com. All right. So the topic that you want me to talk about Here's the thing the other day. I talked about this at great length. I talked about how 20 twenties crazy years this is and there has never been another year like it in my lifetime. May never be another year like this. And this year has been about a lot of things. But one of those things is it's been the year of the hot mic. Because Mike's are hot. They're always hot, but they don't pick everything up in arenas and stadiums. They're filled with fans. But the arenas and stadiums have no fans. So the hot mikes, we're picking everything up, and we're hearing things that ordinarily we would never hear. However. If your broadcaster this notion off the hot mic, like, if you have spent even in our working in this business, you know that every mike is a hot mic or should be treated as such. Hell, I would even argue if you own one of these If you have an iPhone, you know. That thing is hot. Because if you have an iPhone, you have a platform, but in terms of the old school, If there's a microphone, you have to assume that it's on that way. You never get burned. You have to know that if you're in this business, especially if you're in this business now, you might think that the mic has not turned on. Isn't live isn't hot, but you never know. So if you assume that every single bike is hot, you don't get burned. And I laid that out and I shouldn't have to. But I did the other day and by the way I laid it out for like 10 minutes. And no sooner than I did that. Somebody got scorched by yet another hot mic. In this case, Reds broadcaster Thom Brennaman. He had a hot mic moment yesterday. Now when I did that take a few days back. A lot of these hot mic moments were funny. Some of the hot mic moments are embarrassing. Yesterday's hot mic moment was awful. Was truly horrible. If you don't know what he said, you have to go back and find it yourself. Because I'm not playing it here because it's not funny. It's not entertaining. It's not interesting. I mean, it's just it's hate. It's bile. It's reprehensible is disgraceful. And it's a slur. And it's deeply hurtful. And the purpose of that slower is to be deeply hurtful. Like Honestly, I'm not sure what's worse, the fact that he said it or the fact that he was so casual in the way, he said it So, no, I'm not going to play that. To be honest with you initially was even going to talk about it because there is no I told you so moment with this because what was set on the mic waas so reprehensible. And it's graceful. There's no taking a victory lap for predicting something like that. Because I never thought there would be a terrible Is it Wass? So my initial thought was to just ignore it and keep moving. Even though I knew that you clones would never do that. But then came.

"I am Jim Rome welcome back good to have you here halfway through it we'll have a conversation with James Devlin momentarily he had a great run in the NFL he's got three championship rings to show for it and a great backstory too so how the four in the mean in a moment in the meantime phone lines are open one eight hundred six three six eight six eight six Dana white is going to join me at eleven forty Pacific time two forty eastern time down to the final segment a program and if you are C. two forty nine scheduled to come off this weekend as mentioned we're joined right now by three time Super Bowl champ a pro bowler five career TD's undrafted out of brown back in twenty ten he announced his retirement last week James Devlin is my guest James great have you on first off how are you and your family doing in the middle of this pandemic we're good we're good you know we we kind of worked out our kids are young too young to really even know what's going on and they're not missing school into my oldest is four so reporter Amanda preschool after the season ended anyway so we're we're at a pretty good spot man and I were hanging tight just like everybody else and just kinda Hopin and listen to this and it's real soon here here here James Allen joining us good here so last week you announced that you were retiring which brings to an end an amazing career if you were to take me back when you're playing college football brown what kind of thoughts we having about a career after college I mean we think about the NFL or thinking about something else are you know our words I was it's always been a dream of mine since I was you know a seven year old kid first up and all that do you know to play professional football make it a career so I would definitely you know willing to do my due diligence and trying to try to see you know how far football could take me and then but you know the the situation was pretty pretty dire at that point you know senior year I had a had a tryout Cleveland Browns under rookie mini camp and even make it to the third day of it they they let me go to practices and then you know I was just kind of like contemplating my comment maybe maybe football isn't what was in the cards maybe I gotta you know try to use my degree lineup engineering job interviews and stuff like that and then and then you know one thing led to another and I just kinda kept pursuing that that calling that I had inside me to keep playing football and things worked out James talent joining us thing certainly did work out now you have the engineering degree from Brown so there are a lot of things you can do with that one of the options though was to play for the Oklahoma City yard dogs in the arena league how did that opportunity come to be and why was that the path you chose well that was a that was actually just I was I was recently graduated from brown I'm living at home with my parents and like I said trying to trying to kind of figure out you know what my next move is going to be and it was actually the opportunity was presented to me through a Facebook message I just got kind of a random a random message from this guy Ian Harris who is who works for the for the Oklahoma City our dogs I've never heard of the team before I responded to it and it seemed like a legitimate thing so I down Oklahoma City did a try out and they they ended up signing me that day and spent the better parts of like six weeks there played and won one game against the pulse of towns and then the season ended and I was right back we're back home and yes those kind of just like a totally random thing I mean it was it was my first crack it and the that professional football and he knows who they eye opening experience this is Lee and then the journey continues because girl from Oklahoma City in the arena league to Florida in the U. S. L. is it true your agent told the team that you were a fullback and if so when was the last time you actually played fullback yeah I'd I'd probably took maybe a handful maybe five or six snaps at fullback in college a brown we went through this phase where we were kind of we put our plan Harvard and we we kind of re wrote a play a book a little bit and just put put the ball in some really really good athletes hands and we just kind of right ran the ball over and so they put me a full breakfast for handful plays just like real easy assignment and that was that was it outside of maybe like in the same situation in high school so prior to prior to going down to Florida I had probably played maybe fifteen snaps in my life at full back and then and then you know I but I I've I felt like I knew enough about the game of football and seen enough that I could you know run some routes and catch balls and and try to put myself in the best position to be a fall back down there and yes so I went down tried out they never asked me really you know what position I played before and so I just never never is one of those on ask don't tell corporate things and and again that that all kind of worked out in my favor James talent joining us and any a chance for the Bengals you were cut near the end of training camp at twenty twelve if I skip ahead alternately you signed with the patriots what were the early days like with the patriots are you know that I was I was on the practice squad for all of all of for for all of that year except for four weeks and so is a lot of just trying to kind of drink out of a fire hose men I mean there was such a big you know storied organization and learning from like some of the best coaches ever do it yeah sure in the locker room with some of the best players to ever do it so I was just trying to be a sponge and learn as much as I could I knew that my opportunity was was gonna column I decided to do my you know do my work and kinda you know just wait for that time to come and then you know really was that following training camp when I really got my opportunity to compete for a position on the team and so I just knew that you know in those first you know that first year on the practice squad I decide to learn as much as I could and try to get as comfortable in the organization with the playbook and you know with my teammates as I could and and I know capitalize on that and no eight years later hi it it went pretty well yeah and and spend as much time as you possibly could the weight room because you're known as a monster there used to smoke guys like rob Gronkowski any other tight ends when it came to lifting wrong set of you quote he's a different creature when it comes to that he's a beast he can put up weights left and right no matter what it is he's just tossing it up and it's special maybe that is serious praise government got like rock what is it about the weight room in lifting that you like so much you know I was I was never really the most gifted athletes I was never the fastest I was never as you know the biggest but one thing I could always control was my strength and you know so I I need a kind of a test a lot of my success in the game of football to my work in the weight room and to just like put in the sweat equity you know towards my career so it was one of those things that you know it I I took a lot of pride in it because it got me to the to the point of giving my getting my first opportunity in the in the NFL so when I was in the NFL and playing for the patriots and everything I had to show my respect that and into my eyes strong respected to the way wrong is just gone in there and try to get after it and you know let them touch ready you can and so it became a it became you know really really a lot of fun and then there was some so my teammates and just now on this can I give me head as you can possibly get but you know those it was this is something that I really really enjoyed that so you're such a big passion of mine is training and you know I always felt like it was it was just doing something I love and and it got me to that point nine and I really appreciate everyone that surely room with because none of those were some really good times James talent is joining us and then last training camp you're dealing with a painful sensation in your arm how would you describe the feeling and what did you think it was at the time our role you know it was it was a unique feeling it was kind of one of the things that this only this thing I don't know if you know if everyone has had that is pretty common in the game of football and then it was just one of those things that just wouldn't go away it kind of kept coming and coming you know the severity was getting worse and worse and the frequency was increasing so is one of those things I just thought it was a number I was just haven't you know heightened sensitivity to it because it has things in the past and they're you know they're a little more susceptible to doing having it happen again so I kind of thought it was going down that path and then you know once I got checked out things so you know got a little bit more serious but no so is one of those things it was just like a nervy Phelan into law sensation and like that burn type of thing that you get with stingers and yet this kind of got a little bit more complicated once I got everything tested out well then you tell my guy Ross Tucker that's one thing doctors did say was you'll probably be fine but quote just don't run into people with your face and quote obviously James the thing is when you play full back your job is to run into guys with your face so when you're presented with that information what was that like to hear what you think that it was there was a I was an emotional moment because like I said before I wasn't really sure of the scope of my injury and so it was it was kind of like a blind side type deal and and there was that was as a tough pill to swallow man I mean I have my wife and my daughter there was was something that was really special because it was just an immediate sense of clarity of of what happened what really matters and and in the world for me and so nervous it was definitely like you know on welcome news at the time hours how the motion I didn't really know you know what to what to make of it and then but yeah I like it I mean like I said the name out of respect I have for the game and the way I the way I grew up playing the game was was you know stick my face in there and and inviting contact and so I knew that I couldn't you know knowing what I knew about my body after after seeing those doctors I just knew that I couldn't you know play the game with the have a reckless abandon and I grew to play to play with and so it's out of respect for the game I knew that it was it was time to hang it up so when the moment comes and you remember of course you've got a wife and three kids how much of the announcement then is about walking away from football or is it about walking towards them and choosing them it's it's definitely both but I I mean it's definitely more you know choose my family over everything because that is something that that will always be my number one priority is my family and and has their well being and you know I need to be to be able to provide for them for three years the calm not only monetarily but not just emotionally physically been there and and you know spiritually been with them and so you know there's it was really it was a tough decision for me personally because I've been playing the game of football for a quarter century and you know it became such a big big part of my life but you know my my wife and my three kids now although I've only been with my wife now for eight going on nine years and then my kid my oldest kid is for so although you know my time in football was was you know over double the amount of time that I've never been a part of my family they mean the absolute most to me and so it was a really you know came down when it's once it came down to it and they're really became an easy decision I mean my family is everything however it'll never be different was amazing journey and I start a new one.

It's like look were you know you can't there's things you can control and there's things that you can't and so. I've been really leaning into group sessions with leadership and being there jumping in slack and making jokes and anything I can do to make people feel a little more comfortable. I've been tirelessly working their senior emails at one o'clock in the morning so they know that the leader is you know this is when leaders lead and so just trying to step up like a good head coach or anything else in sports analogies you know being the CEO. O. immediate have take dot com trust the process all right so the meantime let me go off the board for a minute it's been a topic but it is stoner Christmas and I want to know is that for the first time ever in its illustrious one hundred and twenty four year history as an example the Boston Marathon is not going off today as scheduled and that's obviously because every event involving more than ten people is currently on pause while the globe works together to stop the spread of the corona virus every event is on hold except for one because while the world may have stopped spending it sure is how has not stopped smoking to which I say Mary stoner Christmas heads happy for twenty and your highest of the high holidays is finally here and nothing can stop it not even this pandemic and while there may not be a marathon today there is a worldwide smoke us on to honor the waldos and their secret three digit code for sneaking off to get lifted back in nineteen seventy one know your history heads now I can't even pretend to sit here and say how this year is all that different from the four twenties in the past few years because it's really not everything bacon nation is all about is actually being legally mandated by the federal government right about now think about it it's not a more willing group of people in the entire world who are happy to stay home watch movies in order delivery then heads down stoners that's not some kind of sacrifice it's a sacrifice for the rest of us but to them it's a dream day it's the best day ever it comes at a perfect time because right now on April twentieth twenty twenty the Ganja is now legal in forty seven different states and all weed shops have been deemed an essential business Matt Hey like dat team bake you wanna talk about flipping the script weed shops first of all there are weed shops second of all they are deemed essential you want to talk about flipping the script it's not that long ago that the feds would bust into a feed shop or growth operable operation sees everything and lock everybody up now those very same outfits are not only being broken up they're being protected by law and you're being told to stay home and fire up the volcano vaporizer I think Charlie Sheen coined a word for that the winning so not only is the law on your side practically everybody else's as well from Tommy Chong to even Jocko Willink American bad **** Jocko tweeted a pic of his watch at four twenty this morning and captioned it time to smoke some burpees and so even a former C. O. was in on it well not really because then if you look at the video that he tweeted out he made a point of saying I'm not smoking I have friends who do you want the I'm smoking or four hundred and twenty burpees Chacoan plan so the sea was arraigned although their idea of smoking on four twenty is very different than yours and.

"Welcome back continuing with our deep dive I'm Jim Rome so thanksgiving weekend oh nine was a wild wild time Charlie Weis got fired at Notre Dame which you goals had a whole lot of fun with Hines ward made some regrettable comments about Ben Roethlisberger's concussion he later apologized for Brett farb showed off his rocket arm against the bears entitle woods was napping it out in the street that's a phrase this been used on the show hundreds of times over the years you know so and so napping it out or Tiger Woods napping it out in the street it's been years so much it almost sounds like some sort of clever phrase that I would just throw around except in that case it wasn't he was literally asleep literally napping it out in the street like I'm here for napa nation and the fact that those of you who are a part of that great nation can just map it out almost anywhere at any time map it out in your car nap it out even in the office but I've never heard from even one of you from napa nation who says you like to nap it out in the street but there was there he was the big cat doing just that napping it out on the pavement and folks were there to help him out as Robert Liu said H. writes in his book the neighbors quote brought out a blanket and pillow for woods who is suing snoring and quote M. B. F. "Welcome back I'm Jim Rome that way through it if you're on hold you want to stay there we don't have top your telephone calls a little bit later on but as promised we're joined right now by a center the Utah Jazz he's a two time defensive player of the year a three time all defensive first team player yep you tied to a nineteen to record over the past twenty one games by averaging seventeen points sixteen rebounds two blocks into assist during that span he leads the NBA for the third straight season in screen SS was seven point seven per game he is second in the league in field goal percentage second in the league in rebounds per game thirty four double doubles this season in Utah is at home against Houston this evening we go bear is my guest Rudy is so nice to have you on how are you great are you good driving yep you know I want to talk about the amazing season you're having and how good your team is but I need to start with the passing of Kobe Bryant what was your reaction Rudy when you heard that terrible news yesterday in with the shark Norton photo booth we just found out about the practice and no we couldn't believe it we I mean there was a you know a big big silence and we know we will try to figure out if the news of a real and you know we found out a few minutes so that they were I was just a moment note make sure to take everything into perspective you know this is the legacy and and the impact it had we would be the four of we go there is joining us in fact in terms of perspective you tweeted yesterday quote enjoy every single day people we are always too worried about things are actually not that important life is precious you never know when it's going to end and quote so personally how are you going about processing all of this about what curry how you processing this how are you handling this I mean it is like I said you know the mix of pink mix would take about them also lost one of my one of my friends we could go in car accidents was stuck in you know you see people and all of a sudden the next day it it it just not here anymore and you know and you can do everything right you know it's you can even light testimony into all these things and you know and have a car accident on someone eating you or you know you just never know in life so it's you know it's all about enjoying in order to do the things every day and you know and so on to serve the people that you know make you better today such a great message would go very joining us so really you're coming off a win over the Mavericks on Saturday were you a twenty two points seventeen rebounds and five blocks you've got some really really good games in your career where is that one rank especially when you consider all the clutch moments did you have late in that game really like the fact that you know we we won the game the main thing you know we we didn't blow bit games but of this game but we we we we stick together and you know we'll go through to the claims on the straights defensively and offensively I think it was one of a you know most exciting means of of the season for sure we wanna moments was that block on the lawn right to lay up in the final thirty seconds that really was incredible it was unreal because even more than that was the build up to the block because you made sure that look it did not drive then you made sure that right didn't take a three and then you recovered to reject the lay up so what was going through your head on that entire sequence and then how good did it feel to hear the crowd respond the way they did chanting your name in showing you all about love I'm in the minds of those really to get a stop you know when we were down to so it's not like no we don't three and we're just going to give it a three we just do the one that has to do is call and you know we knew that they were going to look obviously so look at the bottom of it and then them no and then just you what to do and and try to add up and you know I was able to to to to make a play after getting beat up the Jew bone and you know and then after that later for those in and won the game so he was a it's gonna go month it's in those two go up and you know in one meadows in which is of this no the last minute in the last few minutes of the game only a select awareness and all focus is ready increase in the province so good at the end of games which I would go there now I know you're focused on winning a doing a whole lot of that lately going nineteen into as I mentioned in the last twenty one with your teammates reminding everybody did you belong the all star game your coach Quin Snyder said when it comes to the all star game quote to be honest to me it's one of those things it's just self evident end quote I understand the you're not focused on that but what would it mean to you to go to the all star game this year I mean obviously we would mean a lot and no it just because it's something that no one would be best to boiling come to the league of the kid for the day that Noah Thomas as well I want to be at the microphone to be one of the best players in this league and I want to win the championship Nolan when the when we played with the pain of the team it's it's it's great to have guys that can you know represent represent outstanding in that kind of events of so we go there joining me for a few more moments you grew up roughly ninety minutes northeast of Paris so what was life like for you growing up you just touched on that but what was it like growing up and then what's it like now when you go home as an NBA star I mean what was it like growing up I mean I'm a really loves you know where a group of women among them no obviously a very humble beginnings but you know I think that's the reason I am William today you know already no enjoy every day the commonality you know enjoy the little things that we talked about earlier you know it's all about giving any can you half full nor for the people around you and and and you know for me that's why I'm so competitive Nora I just enjoy going out there much inmates and and you know I'm and try to win because it's you know it's really what what makes you feel alive and good of things we call them I guess all right final point into that point you in the rest of the team in a rolling it seems like from the outside I'm not there of course but from the outside looking in it seems like there's something really unique or special about this group how would you describe the chemistry of this team and what makes it special I mean I think it's it's it's ready like radio we really love each other not so to cool the you can tell that you know we we just enjoyed being lunch other and and you know and and and we got guys that just compare those guys that just want to win more than anything and well you know that your mindset and everyone is willing to sacrifice to the beautiful for the others to make the others better a mix you know he just raised into another level of them with the great courses and no one and the work in the world that we would be able to put in every day with a group of guys like that back care about winning you know you just you just feel like you're getting better and better every month and that's pretty much what we've been doing this year Utah's at home against Houston tonight nine PM eastern they have won nineteen of their last twenty one he is a two time defensive player of the year a three time all defensive first team are he's been playing lights out and absolutely should be an all star this year ready go bear my guess would be I know it's a difficult time in a tough time to do an interview I really appreciate you doing that thank you so much for having me a great day ready thank you we go there Utah Jazz double in all star no doubt my mind at a store what imagine the back in the day this was somebody who was actually over looked like on the way up was actually overlooked not anymore it has not been for quite some time right so our number three sets up like this I know a number of you have been on hold and are still on hold and I will get your telephone calls I do want to finish my thought site last hour or this past hour I had a number of sound bites and parts of interviews with della Kobe and some really serious and some are funny some on the radio program somewhere on the TV show okay more sound that I want to play from a podcast that we do a Kobe I thought Adrian was aroused he was amazing in describing what Kobe was like and his outlook in his view and again if you're a Laker fan and you in Los Angeles your Laker fan in your outside of Los Angeles this is a really difficult day and it's really difficult to explain to people who are not this town who do not have that kind of connection and I understand that I understand why you might not understand this but understand that in this town there is nobody like Kobe Bryant he was the preeminent LA athlete of the generation and to what his point there will never be another Laker like that again the fans will never connect with another Laker and a Laker will never connect with this city ever again anyway so you need because we saw him grow up I'm became as a teenager and spasms are career here and won championships here and did it a certain way yeah that would mean a great point to that Kobe like a lot of people like all of us was flawed to continue to try to get better and better and improve in recent years could tell how much you love and embrace being a father how much you loved embraced his daughter's like people stopping like yo yo coke coke you envy you can have a son like no I don't why for the legacy so we see a mom a junior its imam juniors right.

"Welcome to jungle my name is Jim Rome I'm live in southern California we start our number two now and all I see is a very difficult day very trying day that day as the shock starts to wear off and the reality of the situation starts to sink in and again it's so unfathomable and so surreal we're talking about the passing of Kobe Bryant his daughter a number of others on that helicopter yesterday here in southern California and if you want to share your thoughts and if you want a morning you want to grieve if you want to say anything at all this is what we're doing today we did so in our number one will do so for the next two hours one eight hundred six three six eight six eight six sign our tax pop in from another professional athlete who said quote this socks this cuts deep another star athlete the model meant so much to so many different people you can also follow me on Twitter at Jim Rome and you can email the program to Rome are immediate have day dot com coming up in about fifteen minutes Adrian Wojnarowski from ESPN will be joining us also this hour Utah Jazz center would go bear next hour Chris McGee whose cover the Lakers for quite some time and it was very close to Kobe we share his thoughts to and we are taking telephone calls you know Kobe has a long history with this program and I just but every single show I've done for the past two decades he was excessively he was available and you always showed up and always delivered I mean every single time and again this is somebody who did not have to do this this is somebody who did not need the attention somebody who did not need to fulfill more media obligations once he achieved legendary status he could have just shut it down and only done the league minimum the league required media but that's not what he did I go back to two thousand eight he came in studio on J. R. I. B. Jim Rome is burning first of all the fact that Kobe came in studio was pretty amazing get app which do not do that not they don't have to if you can even get them to say yes generally it's like all right send the camera crew to me and we do sell these back and we did sell because of the technology but not Kobe costar come in so what made a remarkable aside from him deciding to come in is it the studio itself was not remarkable that was not exactly exactly the lap of luxury that was a warehouse across the parking lot from a sheet metal factory he wasn't like some cool luxuries building did you wanted to show off in fact in a way I always wanted the the presence of a star athlete to be there I just didn't want them to see where we worked or what the building was like part of me was like oh no mama wants to come in he's gonna see the hood but I work in every single day we love the process you love the whole thing and that was not a building I want to show off but he came down and one of the things that we talked about that day going back to eight what's his legacy right now give you thought about how this whole thing ends when it's all said and done the final chapter of your career how you go out up I thought about him for it's not a lot to remember it as a guide and just love to play the game were extremely hard anymore you know if people to say that about me I'd be very happy a copy we got you in studio took some doing but good to finally have you here I appreciate the visit thanks so much good luck thank you so then he came back again that was not the only time he came back again when Derek Fisher filled in for me as host one day Derek Fisher host of the show while I was out and then in twenty ten Kobe came on the show the day after winning the title so much riding on it so when you finally got to the finish line last night were you feeling how much of it was joy how much of it was just relief like the pressure is off I got the win you know it would include both both more Joyo there's more joy there is a special group of guys and I really enjoyed it because that because it took a lot of intestinal you know inner fortitude first battle can you use game because you know we were all tired roller drain down thirteen said no to a team that executes so well and they'll hardly ever makes mistakes it was tough but we just also was George because we're able to look each other in high it to a man say no we're going to get stuck there looks ugly right now would be bleak right now but we're going to get this done and the joy comes from god banded together in making that happen how long you give yourself to unplug before you think about anything basketball or business related I think that's a great question it is tough for me to think about anything but basketball as to the way I've been about like five so it is going to be tough to do but take some time off physically and I got a look at my finger and you'll see what the heck I'm a do it this way and they got to go from there another which love breakfast and go get a lift in pretty much I'll be on the show right after the championship this is what I mean right he'd have to do that he also came on our show time show multiple times he was always game for anything and everything including talking dog bleep you once said Kobe and I quote I hate dogs I won't go near it I've got four dogs I just don't do dog do it was nobody likes dogs but what's your beef with dog do I was like this is like a different kind of a beat still like for me it's like it's like a I don't know the psychological date a stepped in dog one time when I was younger my grandparents to just sit me some fresh to death in nineteen eighty eight Jordan is to Italy if we can get joins Italy at that time couldn't get in sommeil playing in the yard whatever the step some dogs just mess them up I was like in the house trying to get him out in the bathroom try to much information but you get the idea I know I do man and now I get it how did you recover from that man that is bad that is really bad I'll figure out how they got for you have all the options we have a I will pick up talk Eric Evett Kobe talking about dog poop on our show time shall we talk about Dwight back in the day which is what makes the whites return in desire to work with Kobe and slam dunk contest this year even more amazing how would you characterize the one year you had with the White House and if you're being totally honest is there any part of you is glad that he did not re sign with the Lakers well we didn't see eye to eye is.

"Jim Rome showing the kind of range that I'm known for opened up an MBA take interviewed golfer. Ryan Palmer talk to Mike Rupp talk some hockey in about five seconds quick reminder. The program is brought to you by rocket mortgage by Quicken Loans rocket mortgage with you every step of the way to provide a seamless mortgage experience next hour the head coach of the Zona cardinals cliff Kingsbury telephone number is toll free in the US and Canada one eight hundred six three six eight six eight six as mentioned we're joined right now by a fourteen year NHL vet he's a Stanley Cup champion. You can watch him on NHL tonight, which is airing live before and after every single playoff game. My guest is Mike Rupp microwave yon. How are you? I welcome nice diversified lineup today. Yeah. Right. Zana, mike. Thanks so much. Listen going into the first round of the playoffs. Mike seem like there was some pretty safe predictions. But then pretty much everything was turned on its head. So what do you make what you saw from the first round? And how much does that change the way you view, the rest of the postseason? Yeah. I mean, I've never seen anything like this in the NHL playoffs or all favorites that have been out in the first round one seems like every couple years you kind of have a few Alirza as far as maybe teachers play a little different. They have different attributes the beginning of this year. It's the it's the one of the kind of bike Midi star power isn't really getting done this year that I went out and that star power been frustrated by the teams by committee approach, and they're they're working extremely hard. And they're they're out working there. They're just frustrating team. So I. I we've kind of seen get away from that the last number of years and right now, it just it just that it's just timely goals and just relentless pursuit of the puck. And frustration superstars Mike, rob. Joining us. How would imagine one of the teams you're talking about his Columbus? Blue jackets, we Tampa Bay in the first round there up two games to one on Boston. Now in the second round. Explain with John Tortorella crew is doing so far in the postseason. In the first round the last year. Penguin in seventeen and Washington capital. Both those teams went on to win the Cup. So we haven't really understood what NATO because they beat by the team. They won the Cup. So. Nonetheless, wildcard team going again, obviously, the Tampa Bay Lightning which was setting records for the most most wins. They were looked on stop on team. Real unique thing where a lot of times. Sports penny Joseph as you know, you move them. Try to get some assets team, obviously doubled down. And they said, oh, we're keeping those guys keep them. We're going to pick up on stunts also. So this team has now, and they there there's always been a very deep team plays the game with a appear identity of of hard work and in your face, condo hockey. And they're they're frustrating. Frustrating superstars, we know that they I. The temporary late in the first round and had a hundred twenty eight points this year, which is the most got no how long in the National Hockey League. So and then this keeping the best blind or you know, and frustrate them in the process. So. Great style. And right now. Provides on top of that the high hockey, Mike, rob joining us a fourteen year NHL Vata Stanley Cup champion, you can watch him on any jail tonight which airs live before and after every playoff game, so Mike. There was a moment late in the game where there was a stoppage in play. Columbus defenseman Scott Harrington was on his knees. Just outside the crease. And then Brad Marchand. Went Brad marshawn punch him in the back of the head. And then skated off in your opinion. What was worse the punch in the back of the head? Or the fact that he bolted before Harrington can do anything about it. And. Listen pretend that that's all prim and proper in the NHL playoffs in Redmond never kind of even in close towing that line as a player, you know. I don't think it's a suspenseful offense. I mean, it's a thirty one hundred percents dirty, but he's been known in new those things, but I don't know. I was always under that. The thought process when you play the game with an consequences to stand up to it. And then then it's fine, and it goes away, and I feel like that's the kind of stuff even wanna standpoint. Refreshing. I'm sitting here watching, you know, you're looking at a hundred points, and he's been accepted. And you got to give credit to Columbus for stunning him and retreats, Berge fashion. I, but when you have instances like this, and you look back I was in game one. Cam Atkinson overtime and just stops on his stick with escape braces. Stick late. Listen. You are flirting with. So I'm wherever I want and the point is between that last night. Free and the one in game one with those are pretty clear cut penalties and both missed by the referee and what you're doing. Here is happening overtime this happened in the closing of the game. When you're down by one in the box. So why are you working on this for some play that, you know, I it just doesn't really make sense. And the facts matter. You're talking about one of the top players the league in Marchand. If. This team's gonna need a power play some point in the series. And if I'm a referendum. This is community that these guys may want embarrassed by being very sneaky and sticking the radar nickname things happened. I'll put my whistle. So you can drip all over him. You can quench grab. You ain't getting call the rest of the way that Mike rob joining us at such key point. That is such a key point these guys, look, they're human. They've got memories they're gonna remember. So if they don't call right now, it probably will come back and bite them so quickly. The islanders are down to the hurricanes and their series New York dominated Pittsburgh in the first round. What is changed in this series? They haven't gotten. Go back to that. At the beginning of this conversation by committee that diamonds are spitting image of that. They are group. That's not really they're not really star power driven. They have Matt bars out there. Last year, and and he's a budding superstar, but at this rate this team is just very timely goals. Very shrewd defensive play. They don't give up much in they in. They got that that contributions in the first. This kind of not to go to any of the goals dried up a little bit. And now the seems tough spot. Kind of the same the same image that they're looking in the mirror when they're planning Carolina Hurricanes. So right now, the polls kind of dried up, but if you're talking about game play and you're talking about through two games so hundred twenty minutes plus against overtime. If you're talking about that they've control a lot of the aspects of the game. So I think it's just about staying. The course gotta find a way to break here. Listen, you gotta look at what what you do. The frustrate other teams is being had to you. You're frustrate them. You're trying to slow down make them take chances. Don't take chances. Just keep staying the course and things. We're talking to Mike Rupp. Now, Mike he played fourteen years in the NHL and you had numerous playoff runs you can speak to this on the outside looking in watching NHL playoffs. It's clear it's an absolute grind physically and mentally. But somebody who's been through it. How would you describe it? You know, what the craziest part? I think when people always ask that the physical give you the physical side of it is coming to training camp. And you might have you know, Joe Smith comes into chain camping. He's all jacket. He prime fifteen pounds of muscle in the summer. And you're looking like, holy crap. Morton summer if I wish we took before. And after you come into training camp pictures, and then after the playoff pictures guys looked depleted their muscle. My soldiers depleted. They look run down. Their faces are set in the the physical. The physical aspect is very real with the whole playoffs. It's all mental. It's all mental because these things that we're talking about here. New York Islanders. You've got to stay mentally strong. You can't open their self up. It takes one plate flip a series. And you can't make yourself. Also. It's it's it's a real mental challenge engine plane every other day, you gotta just routine the rest of the world. I remember when I played the rest stop. I mean when you go in late playoff run. My bills are piling up at home. I haven't paid him. You're sitting here is nothing else. Exists weren't eating to perform on the ice humor sleeping to perform doing nothing. But usually and live in hockey, and that's fine. So you go through something like that Mike, and when you laid out like that you go through the grind you get all the waiting game seven of the Stanley Cup. Final against Anaheim. You scored the eventual game winner, you assistant on two more goals in the three a win over the ducks. What do you remember about that game in? How would you describe hoisting the Cup after winning game seven at home? You know, what the crazy part about is. When you when you sit there, and you're looking and. I'm not trying to answer like like a hero when you're sitting there or when I look back at my career that was one of the most home games big stage games. I mean, obviously, it was probably more calm and game. But the bigger states games I played in. I was so called before that game. And I remember thinking back. I was I was green to it. I didn't know what the heck's going on as he. And so I'm looking at my veteran players on the team, and I'm like, all right? You know, Scott Stephen same ways. Sipping on a coffee and joking around. I remember sitting there before the game. We're in our pre game snack. And I remember ten danika. John mad-. The hockey player. Of course, we're sitting there, and we are talking about that they were just telling stories fashion stories about the craziness NHL have and just joking around and just who can hollering and those guys in the locker room to keep it light. I'm like one of these guys are acting like it's just nary game here. So a veteran players are still he and keeping everybody home. If you got guys jokes are prankster keeps it late in the locker room. They better be doing that. And that situation we had that. So it led me to go out there and perform in the Cup that's all ever dreamed about as a kid. So it still doesn't seem real. It's great getting together. Some of those guys that you wanna come with and just kind of about some stories something that'll with you forever gets the best thing ever when he gets those guys. So finally, when you mentioned, I mean, you mentioned some huge huge names in the sport. Those guys were that loose before game seven. I mean, why would they wired like that? And that's the way they were with a guys who done the work in the preparation. How could those? Guys, be that loose before the biggest game of their lives. They're all little bit different got Stevens. I don't know if he was loose. But he was exactly saying he was very intense all the time. He was exactly the same way. He was he was just you know, you can have the time. So so then you GRA door. You know, just cause me remember this part of routine always just sitting there stole, and you just sit at a coffee, and just, you know, just yipping about whatever was from dinner the night before to two stories about is out. Some of the more loose guys were, you know, the Ken Dina go telling fight stories and laughing candidate goes guy, though, you know, very contagious laugh that just kinda goes just joking around guys, you know, the little the little lines that they say before games, and and just cracking jokes. I mean that stuff is so because when player, you know, I'm trying not to.
