"Machine, got an 86%. That would retail for 34.99. That's a great game. It's a puyo like? If we like, Sam, do you know Jim power the lost dimension in 3D for Super Nintendo? Yeah, I've played this game because you'll get it in I would buy a large boxes of like dollar games, right? And this was a really, really funny one to have a couple beers and try to play because it's just like just a mess. Just a total mess and like over the top and just awful. Check it out. Apparently the 7 BS in it. It's very funny. It's about 7. And then I guess it worked with just regular old 3D glasses, like the cheaper glasses. Yeah. I looked at a video on YouTube, and there's many, many layers of parallax scrolling. It would actually kind of make me feel sick, I think. A ton of like using the Super Nintendo gear, but not actually making a game work. It's like maybe there is a limit to how many levels of parallax scrolling we should use. And I want to point out 1994, this game costs $60. One. Wow. And pricey. An ad for a puzzle game for game one game here called gear works. It's from Sony image soft. So they post all those employees. And then rock and roll racing is an after rock and roll racing. Is this the one that has licensed music? Yeah, I talked about this on the show recently. It has paranoid in it and blue oyster cult and just like kind of funny, born to be wild. As well. Yeah. This is really good. And the sound chip was so good. That sounds cool. Yeah. What I think is funny is they make no mention of that in the ads. Maybe they didn't think that would be a selling point to 90s teens. Yeah, maybe not. Maybe they didn't have the license yet by the time they had to roll off this ad because they made the game like two weeks. But it also was like a cool angle of a racing game. Yeah. It looks like RC pro am. It's like RC pro ammo.

"Has made it through another week. Merola and how you doing man. I'm doing good in. Yeah i mean you know what it's it's you know. We're we're finally at the end of the winter sports season this weekend. Donald j qh raina I it's great to see the basketball teams in classes or five and six being able to finish the job that they didn't get a chance to finish last year. So that it's pretty cool that those kids are going to get to get down there and Compete and have a lot of fun and and worked for a state championship. So amin were at the end of the low. You know. we're at the end of the road there but then you know the spring sports are starting this week at you know. Baseball's going to start and track and field gonna start and soccer's gonna start so you know it's great that we're seeing this where we're finally at a point to where the kids are participating the kids playing and their state championships to be wants. So that's a really cool thing about it right now. What kind of feedback are you getting. Jim from Athletes from coaching staff from Families administrators both the high school and the nc two level. I'm telling you right now. The you know the the feedback has been the bottom line. The kids are playing You know one of the biggest things. And i know we talked about this. A while back is when everything was shut down and the kids are working virtually from home doing all their studies. And everything it you know. Yeah they missed field but but there's a big mental part of this as well That nobody really talked a lot about back in the fall and think seeing the kids out there competing i i think the mental side of it is starting to kinda get back to some sense of normalcy But i i know. The kids were struggling. You know last spring and summer and even the follow it without the county was shut down until you know the september So i think everybody is grateful..

"March twenty twenty so why not be as open and willing to share and to help and to provide the yes avenue versus the no is much to increase participation. Because i'll tell you. I one of the big things that we are struggling with is a lack of participation in our community we have lost quite a few in terms of our percentages and our numbers that we normally can expect so. I think you're right with the patent situation. That coaches recognize. Hey we kind of have to share a little bit if you wanna maintain our programs and be able to be competitive and a lot of areas you know. It's it's easy. And i think one of the great not just mantras but you'll hear successful. Athletes coaches talk about doing a little bit of everything. Don't specialize don't limit yourself. It's easy in theory but it's a lot tougher in in practice. Maybe and and maybe this is. You know forcing folks to adapt and rethink perhaps a little bit coach. Yeah i would agree. And i think that that in general i would say there was probably a period of time about six to eight years ago where everybody was really hard core on the specialization. Kick of a new basketball or seven on seven football or quote unquote getting big for football. And what we've seen is hey first of all like the best athletes and professional sports are multi sport athletes. So why would you go against the grain of the most elite outliers in the sport in go all in on a particular athletic pursuit that may actually in the long term shorten your growth curve and limit your development as opposed to. Hey let's get involved in participate as much as we can have a high school experience. That's robust that can provide a lot of opportunities through not only skill acquisition for multiple sports but maybe potential college scholarships in a sport. You had no idea that you would be great at. And i think that moving forward as a society. We need more participation instead of less and that three sport athlete. I hope can make a resurgence as we're moving forward as we're starting to see like you know the kansas city chiefs that almost every one of those guys ran track in high school. You know and speed kills both on defense on the offensive line. The defensive line. It doesn't matter your position and what better sport to get fast than they actually do. The sport we spent two to three months. Run really really fast. You can get big in the other offseason. You know it's like if you're a ceo. You're not only going to you know. Read books sore Have conversations with people in in your industry and you know my theory coach as to why that happened. I'm interested in your thoughts. "That. I'm not interfering with other sports. I practice my team later in the evening. you know. it's one of those things that we always hear coach. But i think sometimes it can be tough to put it into action because it requires a lot of moving parts but everyone says you know play multiple sports and do a bunch of things you know these students i think a of us have learned time management and a lot of when i used to say i'm busy. I wasn't really doing anything. I just wasn't really getting to what i needed to do. And you know. I think that. Hopefully it's another silver lining is that we're all realizing you can do a bunch of things at once. It doesn't mean that you have to do any of them. You know heartedly but right. I'll figure out a way to work together with whether it's in work school athletics. Whatever and we have to realize that it's a commitment you know we're trying to keep these kids out of what's going to keep them more trouble than from this practice that practice to do their homework go to bed because they're going to be tire where we're taking up all that that Restless energy out of their bodies for their parents. So i i think that again. These are things that we can look at to help. Our kids be successful in school. It a help them with their time management and understand what a commitment really looks like. Because they're doing. And i can definitely say our kids are understanding that given a a huge commitment right now. Well tell me about your team. Tell me about what. It's like to be planned spring ball have all the guys back together. You step back together and Just or have you seen to this point coach. It has really really been fun. This very different. You know you're in february or practicing and it's cold out you have on snowsuit and boots on our goodness. This bill is ringing. You have an audience coats in you. Know kids have hoodies and stuff on over there. Their practice gear. I mean is just comical and i. It's just fun to be back out doing what we do what we're accustomed to doing. It doesn't feel like it's the spring necessarily it. Just feels like we're in football and we're doing what we want to do what we love to do. Yeah i guess the last thing. I was wondering about that if there is like. You know something weird in in the brain that even though you're you're playing football you're on the sidelines. You're getting ready. It doesn't feel like football just because it's a different rhythm on the calendar. But i guess there hasn't really been a rhythm for the last year so i don't know coach. You'll be like playing cricket at patent ville next year. I wouldn't even bat eye right now. I'll tell you what the the really only weird feel is. The lack of spectators in the stands. You know not having spectators. That's a little different. But i would if if we could have a full stadium and you see the concessions going and things like that. Then you feel like you know. It's really football going on but when you have to limit the.

"Peers coaches Teachers folks in the community bouncing stuff off or you know when when you thought man is ever going to end and maybe you need to reset. Who did you lean uncle. I mean again. A lot of buddies are coaches. So we we all talk to each other a lot during this situation. Everyone bouncing ideas off one another. You know i'm gonna situation unfortunate fortunate enough. My best friend is all my staff so sorry about that. The bill is raining. I'll good again. My best friend is on our staff and we spend a lot of time talking about situations and things going on you know lo and behold unfortunately. His mom actually passed from kobe. I so i mean we had a very personal relationship with the pandemic hitting us in home and seeing from the outside of people wanting to participate so for us we. It was kind of an easy decision for us to say. We wanted to wait until it was safer to participate. Because we didn't want to put anyone else in jeopardy but you know we really really missed not having a football season because that's what we're used to. That's what we're accustomed to. This is what we do. And i it was very different Put it that way very different. Yeah i i think sometimes different can be okay even if we resist it like we saw that. The national league used d. h. and the The player that the designated hitter busch stadium didn't fall into the batting circle into a best right like sometimes changes like change out of tough situations can lead to things stat Maybe are improvements as you think about what's happening right now in the state of missouri around the spring sports as you think of flexibility within scheduling the way you had to do things Is there a silver lining that you can think of. Or or if i told you coach smith give me one or two things out of this year that you would like you know The athletic missouri athletic association to discuss or consider moving forward. What what would you give me. I tell you what the number one thing would be consideration for spring ball. Because i mean we're we're using is probably somewhere around fifty days that we will be participating something like that that we could do from this off fall season and spring ball season somewhere about fifteen or twenty days. Something like that. I think that there's as long as we're doing this the right way. And other coaches. See that we're not taking players away from them. We can actually share players. Were only talking about a fifteen twenty days worth of work for these kids to what these kids have gone through. That'll be nothing to only. I mean it's it. It can be a huge silver lining so whole going forward. This is something that they would consider. You know that no-one feel slighted that will be football. Players are now. They're cutting into our baseball time or are lacrosse time. Or you know track time. Whatever other sport the kids are participating in they'll just know that we're all in this together and you can actually what we do. I let the kids go to their track. Practice baseball practice. Whatever chanice whatever sport. They're playing volleyball and they do their sport the regular practice time and we practice for football since. We're the alternative. We're practicing in evenings now. No that's not luxury has but we're just slow to..

"I've always said that The basketball seasons entirely too long. I mean in normal years in a non kobe year. Your state champion played thirty two thirty three games. That's an ncaa schedule And these kids are built for that just yet So that would be the other one at end. The other one with basketball is i know. Everybody kicks and screams about the shot clock. I i'm not a fan of the shot clock in highschool. I'd rather see the restricted area arc underneath the hoop before. I see the shot clock so but those would be a couple of things that i think are going to be addressed in different things along those lines. But you know once again. I think we're just see a lot of different things. I think you do. I envision in the near future having the pack gymnasiums and stand in three or four deep on the baselines for a cbc shamanov game. I don't see that happening in the next couple of years I think that schools are going to have to do a better job in in taking care of stuff like that you know but the bottom line is there's going to be some new normals in and i would love to hear what other people would wanna do it if they were. You know intruder haunts shoes or the board of directors shoes. They just kind of say. Hey can we change things to make things better. Yeah i i love it because you know. Discussion and even discussion in the midst of frustration can Could lead to some positive. So i would love people to tweet us. "Because a lot of them you know they. They couldn't go workout a summer. They couldn't go to gym. They couldn't go You know run at the playground and that kind of stuff so they literally had to you know go back to the roots of the game and have the hoop in their driveway in do drills in different things along those lines and every kid that i talked to said i really my love for the game during last summer and that was awesome to hear i mean that was you know some great stuff here and once again. A lot of kids. Don't understand this. You don't realize how much you love something till it's gone and i think a lot of those kids you know realize that last summer and last spring and you know they they. They realized that my gosh. I'll take the coach yelling at me. As long as i can get on the court and play or out. I'll take a bad call by an official as long as i. Can you know play baseball or something along those lines so the kids have just been so resilient and of just once again done everything i mean. There have been some cases. Sure we're going to have that but for the most part they've done everything they needed to do. Yeah let's talk about that play on the field on the court. What a first couple of weeks of the Hoops state playoffs and caliber basketball manage. Just been unbelievable on both sides. Yeah no doubt about it and you know. I think some great stories are coming out of out of this to lift for life. I mean holy zhang you know this is a magnet school down sue lar- you don't hear a lot about him Especially this year with you. Know some of the rules. That are a little bit different down in saint louis city than in the county But for them to make two incredible runs with their boys and girls teams to make it. Down to jake. Serena play this weekend in the state final four. That's just some really really cool stuff But then you look at the bigger classes in the caliber basketball being played. You know see shamanov last friday night. That game is really go down as the best game of the year. If not may be one of the best games in the last five to ten years With the way that thing evans flowed over the last three minutes of the game You know on the girls sides..

"Throws the mother guys into your adult at different role for the team. And when you're in a different role than what you were the year before it. It takes some time to figure that part out. And and i eat as a coach. You gotta be willing to go through those growing pains and let the kids figured out and Because now said by the time you get the march when you get figured out. Hopefully you're rolling the way we feel like we are right now kind of fitting that. It's here. We are again against cardinal richard. Does it feel like that was a couple of seasons ago coach. That loss that you've alluded to. Yeah you know how. Sometimes you look back on game as i mean. That feels like it was yesterday. Yes that feels like. It was a couple seasons ago because that was just like a week or two into the season our third game and everybody was just getting used to playing in front of a limited crowds or no crowds Wear a mask. Everyone just completely different. The digits spaced out now. Almost looks normal when you see it And if you see somebody else not doing it it catches you off guard so yeah it. S like a longtime flake. We're a different team than what we were at that. That that point in season so Again that's And i'm sure. Cardinal ritter is as well as looking back that was their first game of the season. That was a ring ceremony from their state championship year before So is a big night for them but The have a game like the earliest season to say. Hey guys this is the type of game that you're going to need to win To get the state to win state or at some point down the road and now here we are with a rematch. It shows you that we were playing the right games and In both of us in double overtime game early on that we both get fighting and got back to this point to rematch..

"Has been quite as much of a shock. Because they've got i guess. The eye opening experience little bit last year but again that maybe they don't know what they're missing But i think some of the kids that i'm around every single day. The kids in my classes the kids in my team. I mean they're they're just they adapt to whatever stone. Adam and i think that's what you have to do in life. Life's gonna throw your curve balls. It's never going to be perfect and these kids. I tell you what you know for basketball guys. I asked them how about working out this fall. How are we going to be able to do it in five different ways and we get on zoom during the summer and in guys would do we do push up contest and just find any which way and there's just excited to compete in be around each other even if it is over the computer They're also a little more tech savvy than what we were when when we were in high school. So i think they're okay with sometimes the communication over a zoom calls or texting or face timing than than while probably we were at that time cook. What have you learned And for as much success as you've had in your staff if you put together all the years in games that the you guys have have coached and have been around student athletes. What's something you've learned. That may be at this time last year. You never would have thought you would need to have in your to about so to speak well. Number one is Just fill in filling blessed that we get to play the games and the take advantage of the relationships and we all get blind to it at some point You know caught up in winning and losing and how we gonna make this team better and sometimes you can get so blinded by all that that you you miss out on the joys of being coaches with kids and having relationships and end developed as people and I definitely think for me Just you know the thought of not having a season thought of having things taken away just It changes your mindset. That will go on like a every day that they give us a data practice is is a day that we get to be together and hang out have fun and work together Because we had some things. Take away from us you know. We don't have the locker room experiences at least increase core st louis county. You don't in a locker room so You know we're not you know the the the locker room before the game after game the celebrations Just the little things. Pre-game meals were all eating together and hanging out talking go. You're what we used to go to family's house that was close by to the game that we're gonna play have a pregame meal so we all can hang out together in a guys all get fed and then we go to the game. You can't really do that this year..

"Ironically we are right at the the one year point of all got shut down last year so it was march eleventh coached. I flew back from spring training last year. Yeah well i mean everybody. Just a played their quarter-final games on that saturday and was looking forward to the state finals. the the final four also got shut down so it's been obviously a long drawn out process going from a year ago to where everybody's at right now but it's It's definitely i guess you'd say you can't take your foot off the gas pedal at any moment during all this but we've at least made it to this far you know to where we've got eight teams left in our class in. It's been a long long season. you know. Trying to figure out ways to navigate through the schedules all the changes that it had made as soon as you get changes and things are going great The weather kicked in a few weeks ago. We have a bad weather so games get shut down so you just basically Have to stay optimistic. You have to stay ready to adapt and Ready to adapt to whatever situation. As i told our guys even at one point you might just need to bring a uniform to school because i might tell you. We got a game tonight just to try to fit a few in a certain point you know. I was broadcasting back on october. I think it was october tenth. The first game or the first weekend of games in saint louis county dismised in. Cbc at met and it was you know all the new rules in terms of parents and family members that were allowed in and protocols inside the county for you Guys and you know while. I know that was football. You are obviously a part of of the dismissed community. Saw everything that went into getting things going. You've seen everything even outside of basketball And all the people taken over the last six months or so. How would you describe to someone who doesn't have your vantage point. Just the infrastructure. The amount of people. And just you know the manpower. The man hours not just from the student athletes and the coaches but from so many people to to keep things rolling right. Well there's so much going into it just to keep it rolling As you mentioned in nonunion to take into consideration just the daily process of these kids at school You know wearing a mask all day in six feet apart The fall semester started with a hybrid. Schedule where some kids were in class. Some kids were remote at least four dismay Eventually adapted into everybody being in school and just kind of growing from there and then One of the big topics that came up you know was a football and soccer. And it's really leading the basketball officiating in referees for for these so as as many times as you want to say. Hey we can't play a game here. Let's go play game on this day. you gotta check see how many officials are available and In that that was obviously when you think you're gonna have a game and then they officials are out with quarantine or anything that pops up You've got people at scores tables. You've got administrators. There's everybody that's kind of been hit at one point or another during the season of the fall or the winter sports that attend to shut something down for somebody. So we've been very fortunate to make it this far I was kinda hoping going in the season. Maybe we just had a short season going. Maybe january until now Just to have a shorter window to try to make sure we get it in..
