"120 countries. I'm Michael Barr, this is Bloomberg Tom Paul. Michael Barr thinks so much. Bloomberg business of sports with the shift I watched the other day in baseball. I still don't get it. But now we have relief pitchers starting games. Jeff passing over to ESPN today with a smart article on breaking the cadence of starting pitcher to middle relief to one guy that mops it up. What we grew up with is gone. There is no Sandy Koufax anymore. You don't have that. You don't have the pictures that we had back in the day. The Denny with tigers, man. You don't even look records anymore. You don't say like it used to be, if you're a great pitcher, you had 20 wins in a season. Yeah. Yeah. Nobody gets that anymore. Remember the Baltimore Orioles had three pitchers one year Jim Palmer and two others that were killed. From a Bloomberg business of sports standpoint, is this just there were so much money that the worry about their arm is completely taken over. Denny mcclain didn't care about his arm. He would just pitch until. I mean, we all fell off. You're too young to remember this, Michael barber, there's a guy named Christy Matheson out of bucknell, who tragically died early of TB, but a guy like Matheson pitched himself out of baseball. I get that's the bad case. A hundred whatever pitches a game. Pretty soon he couldn't throw the ball, but have we swung too far the other way? No, well, I think this is the way you're going to see the game go, because you're going to have it broken down in three segments like that. You got started, then you got the middle, then you got the reliever. You're going to see

"But in that particular case, I was being very real. I mean, the easiest thing in the world to say, oh, I love stetson Bennett. I thought he was great last year, and he's going to be even better this year. Ball. The guy was America's best part of the mirror, Paul. I wouldn't bet against Tiger. Well, I would have, and so would you. Yeah, yeah. Yeah, Paul, you bet, yes. And you told the truth, you got nothing to be embarrassed about. So let me break it down to you, Georgia. Let me break it down real good to you. And times that you may understand, this is for red doo doo, mad lazy poodle, and all you, Georgia bulldogs. It's over. It's over. There's only one team. One freaking team. I asked the LSU tigers that get 14 or 15 players drafted in the NFL and come back the next year and win a national championship. It is the king, the Muhammad Ali college football, baby. It is the Alabama crimson tide. It's over. Enjoy it. It's done. We're moved on to another season. Now Paul, I'm pissed off, dude. I'm pissed off. You know why? No, why? Baseball season. I'm a Oreo fan. I don't opening day. I was already 20 games out of first place ball. I hate baseball. And I said, you know what? I'm just really, I'm not ready for this. No, I hate freaking baseball. It's not America's pastime. It's America's disgrace. Listen MLB and I'll never mention you again. Until everything has an eagle financial playing field, you are a frigging joke. You are not America's past time. You are America's disgrace. What's happening in Pittsburgh with the pirates and Baltimore with the Orioles, it is a disgrace to Jim Palmer and Roberto committees and I wish you would stay on strike forever. Now, Paul, let me say this. I just got word from the championship trophy of center. They built me a fine bomb championship trophy and I need your permission to put your head on top of my trophy. Can I have it? Legend, you have anything you want in the fine bomb show arsenal? Well, your head is going to be on top of my Chapman ship trophy, my 2022 fine bob championship trophy to find bomb head is going to be on top of a brother. I'd love it. And listen, they can only be won. Not 54. And I was just reading page 54, to lose no doubt, yes. And would you imagine a picture of the Miami hurricanes? Let me tell you something, KD, KB or whatever the hell your name is. You ought to be awake forest hater. You ought to be a Syracuse hater. You ought to be a Florida state hater. Everybody has warped your ass. I still remember Keith Jackson saying, Thomas has loose. Thomas is running down the sideline. Oh no. Like a boat of lightning. Two and three catches him. Takes the ball. Chelsea's face in the dirt that dynasty is destroyed. Damn right you hate me because I'm the king, dude. And you always hate the king. When you're a relevant child, like to you, I'll thank you so hard to you won't be cheering for the you. You'll be cheering for the oh. Legend out. The legend never failing to deliver. Eric is up next in Georgia. Hey, Paul. That's a fake red dog guy. Made a great argument as to why Georgia could win the national championship. If stenson Bennett is not the quarterback. Let's hear it. How did the four candidates, he's clearly the least talented. And I can't imagine that he's holding the job by the end of the season. I also agree with you, he made an egregious error coming back because if Georgia doesn't win, he's going to get the blame for it. And he will no longer be the darling of Athens, he'll be the foe that the reason why Georgia didn't win this year. You know, Eric, if you look at the history of mankind, there have been a number of people who have had masterpieces and continued on. Beethoven, da Vinci, Picasso, Michelangelo. I mean, you don't know, because it's not Beethoven, a lot of his works became more famous later in his life. Same for Bach, aimed for other great composers, great artists. What I'm trying to say is stetson Bennett knew he threw up a masterpiece that night in Indianapolis. There was nothing else he could do and he still came back, he's entitled to it. He earned it. Cliche, whatever you want to say. But all I said this morning was, and I'll continue to say it. I'm troubled by it. I don't want to see anything, unfortunate happened to his college experience. And you've you know what's behind him? Well, I think people are giving him too much way too much credit for why Georgia won last year. It was because of the cast around him. It's going to be like that again this year, but I can no way envision that Georgia repeats if he is the starting quarterback. Just no, well, you know, as the caller a few weeks ago, minutes ago who said he should be the Heisman. He should win the Heisman. He's got a good cast around him, but he needs more than a couple of good receivers. And I just don't think George will have that. Hey, thank you very much for the call. I appreciate it. We head to the break more of your phone calls right after this. You are listening to the Paul fine bomb show podcast. And.

"Those was A lot more closer than i thought this would be an okay. You gotta give credit to the cubs score hanging around and the guy down. They tied back up. But you know we got the lucky wild pitch in the bottom of the night than they were phillies. We're able to walk it off in thing that really obviously helped them in the L. e. standings. I think they're only what three and a half games out or some three games and other braves game got postponed today because of bad weather but That we got it over the line and then like you mentioned Couple pitching changes for us. I was gonna fade. Mike minor yesterday but got changed to hernandez and the as still to curb business against Against the rolls yesterday. I think they want to all the ten and right now. They're two in the top of the night so You know we'll see how that goes by you. Know a a win is a win. And we'll we'll take the w any day of the week. Yeah mine's My dog still alive tonight. Isn't it tyler. Alexander is going for detroit. Which i was i was cool would get a win. It's the it's up to for bullpen. I think someone paid off. Somebody head pictured tampa bay going in his is an open started off. So i think the tags on the live doppler but it won't be an official due to the pitching changes weeks news will surround just a few little bits and bobs. Because obviously the scots here. So we've got all the good stuff to get to. Julio last i became the first pitcher to get to eighteen wins for the dodgers on the season. he's kind of being overlooked. I think he's to be overlooked. We've entered once or twice Assad because he's always been twenty five hundred thirty three and mainly because a couple of the names For example cheers. He's on the roster with him. he's been outstanding season. And i think he gets a little. Bit short-changed me up these pitch conversations. I definitely that's true having said that. I'm kind of curious. How the cy young awards going to play out because you have basically three guys on the same team that are just cannibalizing votes from each other. Is you mentioned shirts. You can't forget about bueller and you also got a mention your. I just think it's kind of funny. Now that kershaw's back in the rotation because he's healthy again that he might be the best number four starter like in a single season ever which is kinda funny. I'm trying to think of other comparisons. You have the orioles team that had four separate twenty game winners back. When jump jim palmer was still there but the point is is that your is has been great. Is it going to win the award. No you can be in the nomination. Maybe if it was the same criteria they used to use just over inflated how how valuable wins war because that's where he ranks but the issue is is that is on even the best pitcher on his team is not even the second best pitcher in his rotation. He's not going to win the award. Of course i still think is a very good pitcher. And there's a reason why he ended up closing the deciding game in the world series last year of the bullpen is because roberts realized he was really good but he's had a great year..

"The i number five. He's number five in the list of number one starter. Okay yeah okay. So so the ranking. We'll as far as the number one starters. Maddox has got to be eleven. He's number one. Let me roll through the number one starters. We'll pick the top four okay of of each team. I'm talking about the number one star in each team each. There's a number one on each team all right. So for the for the mets it would have been good. Yes for the orioles jim palmer. Yes and i'm just looking at teams now for the cubs had to be lester. It was last sixteen for the braves. Maddox right twenty. dodgers kershaw our bueller with her shaw. Okay toots at astros orlando her two thousand eighteen red sox of portillo. No not not only thinking. You've already know whom i love my missing. The miss your best is missing their best pitcher. Who's on the who am i missing. Probably their best. Pedersen's pedro martinez. Honestly do you know it. I know i know who am i missing. Why am i going haywire on my team. Who is holland skinny. Oh chris sale chris sale. Gosh dang he gave me the same thing with third over thought. The best thing you ever think chris out there you go y y because crew sales getting gotten lit up in the postseason forgot all about it but that postseason english and and that wasn't when portillo cy young year was that the astros world series year. Seventeen might have been right. He was like sixty sixteen. That foreign might have been that long ago. All right so as i look. It's still pitching. I have no idea somewhere. Maybe i have no idea no. He's not he's pitching this year. Sixteen he will say okay..

"You're not gonna wanna have a whole lot of people that you have to manage all the time. Well that's actually not one hundred percent now. It's a drag to manage people. But if believe me if you're going to have businesses and i have i have Four internet businesses plus my coaching practice. And do in doing the live events. If i wanna be off on monday and friday i need people that are taking care of all these things that are going on behind the scenes. i have no employees. Jp will i have one employee. It's my wife. She helps smooth the coaching business. But i have thirteen virtue. Assistance that run the various internet businesses. And you know there's a chapter in my book. Decide called delegate or stay small forever if you don't learn to let go and have other people do things then you're you're going to be forever limited because there's only so much time in a day nobody gets more than twenty four hours in a day right absolutely but it sounds like and what i met by managing. It should have been more clear that it seems to me the way that we're building the way i build my business. I work out of my loft kind of like you're working out of a one bedroom in your case is that we want things so that we don't have to have a central office. We don't have to go there. We have the freedom of being like like in two thousand seventeen. I'm spending five months in denver. And then i'm going to spend four or five months in san diego. I'm able to live in different places that that was part of my dream lifestyle. And i might go to austin for another couple of months so you know. It doesn't matter because my business that. I have to carry with news to max a mixer and microphone and there we go. I can roll it behind me so running. The business is also. It seems to me like you've got all the va's but my guess is that you probably have a lot of that on autopilot where they have systems and they know what to do. And you don't have to micromanage any of it i do. It's really important that you create the system so we use some various software. I think high rise is one of them Base camp is another project management system. And i also have a. I have what. I call a director client services and this person's been with me almost ten years and she oversees all the va's and what we did and this is hard. It's hard initially to put it into action. So i had to document every single thing that i was doing and then start. Started outsourcing pieces of that. Now everybody knows because i have people in this country multiple countries that do different things but it all comes together and so i people know i have writers that produce a certain amount of content by the tenth of the month that then goes to the template designers then goes update the website. So everybody's got a hand in it and everybody knows each other at least by name. Email and occasional phone call. And everybody knows that i gotta have my work done in this state so i don't hold anything up that that didn't happen overnight. It took a lot of work. Get that happened but honestly another reason you want to do. That is that when i mentioned one of the elements of a dream business. J. is becomes an asset for worry free retirement and one of the things that makes your business attractive to a potential buyer..

"I switched only do calls on tuesday wednesday and thursday. And i have monday and friday with. There's no interruptions now. Sometimes i use those days to write or to do whatever production or i take off and nobody has my cell phone except my family kids in a couple of close work associates. That's it and so i- consciously made the decision that this is what i wanna do. I wanna control what my life and my schedule looks like and some people might be thinking. Jv will let sees if you say. Well it is and believe me worse but a lot of it is really because i do the same thing. I coach on mondays and tuesday mornings. That's it you can't coach with me any other time. You don't care what you want to pay me. That's my coaching time. And i have certain days that i do podcast interviews. And then i have days. That are free. And you can't talk to me. So i think what you're saying is is really figure out what you want and batch it you know i was doing a call yesterday and one of my clients said starting in two thousand seventeen. I wanna play golf. Every friday any listed a bunch of things he wants to do he goes. I'm trying to pre think about what are the most. What are the biggest speed bumps. And i'm likely to have with that kind of a schedule and i said the biggest one you're gonna have to get over yourself because if you're a worker bee if you were brought up the you and i look like we're probably similar generations you were. You were brought up to work and respect work and hard work. But when i got my i got my first boat three years ago and we started this Off on fridays mondays. "Guys want to. What like when. The game is only something in real quick on in the over head in west bloomfield michigan. You're here on the richeisenshow what's up. Rich I share a low for baseball. Like you do agree with your takes about All the edicts from the baseball commissioner that have just gimmicks that ruined game. Whoever your take about the shift. I'd like to talk about a little bit There was a Old time baseball player who Basically said keep your eye on the ball and hit them where they ain't yeah and to me and you also said that ted williams. He was shifting. There was william shift on yup. Yes right and he ended up batting four hundred. So what it says to me is that the shift is just the challenge to the hitters. That's a managers decision. It's not an edict from the From the baseball commissioner's office. Now i know so but but now the shift isn't just for one player. It's for every player. An an end. It has gotten to the point where everything together that ted williams didn't have to face a hundred miles an hour out of the pen four or five different times from four or five different arms. It's a different game and not everyone's ted williams so you know my response to all this is is that that the game has changed that it's more difficult than ever to hit and i want to see a rule to make more hits. That's that simple. I wanna rule to help the offense in baseball. And that's my rule here but what why would you want to dumb down the game. I guess the other thing you know ted williams even advised having a six degree angle. When you swing swing your bad right. I mean so he was already saying that you should you know not do the level swing that most people were taught when going up. Yes sir. I know jim palmer was telling that very same story today and and i appreciate you taking outlook you and i you. You make excellent points and you are also giving voice to what every manager. That's come on the show that i brought this subject up to ed You're giving that voice. I'm just saying the other way around. I it's driving me nuts it. I think it stinks. It takes hits away from the game and in a game already. And thanks for the call. Callback sir I it's hits challenged. It's runs challenged. It's offensively challenged right now. There is no pace of play issue in baseball. It's quality of play issue in baseball. Needs to be fixed and the first things first is to make sure that every single person that's designated shortstop to third baseman is on the left side of second base looking into the outfield and second base and first base is on the right side of second base and they can't get further than five yards past The infield period and story. That's my way of doing it. I thought i handled that very calm. And zen like with a listener. As i'm i'm learning i'm trying to become better at not letting things bother me and annoy me and gets into a problem. That's right. I'm trying to do what aaron rodgers showed and earlier on you try to trigger me. Glad you didn't bring up like choose off on a plane that would have been very triggering thing off about it or the the other thing with. Pt went pineapple on a pizza pineapple eating eating your pizza with a knife and four. I which i called. What once upon a time. I said that was animal psychotic or as i say it was like a psychopath or something like that. Okay psycho pathology. Could we bring up a raw chapman that You know just. He'll he'll get throwing some news sticky substance to put on his. I don't know what it is. He'll just get through. It can't last forever that's getting there. That's like denial so when our show of was on two springs ago on youtube this is before. Nbc sports on peacock and before nbc sports net and after our departure from audience. We were on youtube. We were right for just a couple months. To keep this thing alive keep it moving matriculate the shows down the rundown okay and here we are here we are here. We are and One of the things we talked about when we were mostly on youtube was for some reason. my uber rating was in the toilet. I didn't know that my rating was appreciably terrible compared to other people's writings until it was brought up here. I don't know. I don't remember how it came up. But it did. And my rating was four point. Five four stars air four five four and that's what when we were coming up with. What do we call the the The names of the people who would show up on our youtube stream and post you know like actual people not like the russian botts or sending his heart emojis and things like that. You know Tj we came up we call them the what the four five fours round. We're five four. And so i was like i don't get it because i'm i'm always i get in the car. I don't say much. And i don't you know i don't slam doors. I don't bark at people. i'm on time. I don't cancel rides. I don't get it. I don't understand. Right and mike. You told me i came up with my uber. You know i'm not gonna swing it. That hot fastball monday. Tuesday he says you know. I'm off that of course on wednesday of course type fastball. He pop it up cloud or whatever so in the twelfth inning. It's gone from my twentieth win. And john mccain blows a clay. My car was out by about a half a step and cause them safe and that'd be in went into one. It's two to two. And i'm trying to win my twentieth late august and jim spencer comes up and you know. He was a little fastball hitter. I you know you're in a tie. Boggy to in the twelfth inning and throwing the fastball away and he gets a little stop lines tonight. look i should. do you want the ball. I said you know he was from baltimore. He used to play basketball game. I said you could have been doing that for the last two years so we knew about where to pitch guys. We knew that you know as henry so that they don't see the ball you have you know you have a high fastball. That has currently great spin rate. You know what. I thought my purse world series game. Santa colfax is last game. And the i'm on deck and dodger stadium and sandy throws that the three thousand balls and he thought about swinging at all three of any never could get the bad going so as i'm walking up to home plate i i said I said radio. She said what i said. You know you could hear him. But you couldn't see them. So i walk up to home plate and he throws and i was pretty good hitter. He throws fastball. And i it starts in the lobby and it ends up on the second floor. I said no. I'm going to really have to get going way. Throws me the same pitch. Except it's not as fastball. But you know now there's a term cuddling where if you throw the pitch out of the same you know release point. They don't know the difference. Well roseborough monroe catches on the ground. And that's of high learned. How what santa colfax was santa colfax because he had a fastball curveball. Pretty much the two coaches he had. You could never tell the difference when started in the lobby ended up on the second and third floor once started a lobbying ended up in lower basement. So you know. Baseball hasn't really changed. It's just you know. I think they they wanna you know quantify it and all that but i mean you know i know pitchers are good and they're throwing with more callosities and you could talk all day long about whether they're using substances or not but at the end of the day You know ted williams tapped his bat on the plate in nineteen sixty nine. Said you know. Boys get a good pitch to hit preferably fastball. And you need to have a six degree upswing so we talked about launching go back in nineteen sixty nine and of course he was headway. Yes jim palmer here on the rich eisen show I could talk all day but Before i let you go. Jim i i do want to give you the floor and shohei otani of what. We're seeing a unicorn every fifth day and certainly every other day I'll give you the floor and what we're seeing from him right now. It's just amazing. you know. Read an article this morning about babe. Ruth only what pitched in the outfield. And what two hundred eighteen games and he said you know. You can't do both. We'll all can't but how big is he got. He's it's like he's you know we. You know i mean if you broadcast for the orioles in the american league east your stand and you know and and judge and all that i mean guys that are superdome. They look like they. Should you know be on the you know in the movies and you know and then you know some of the you know the superhero movies and all that so But otani just you know. I saw him a couple of years ago and we could actually go on the field and talk to players and all that yeah you know and then you saw him run and you said he. It's ball now. Gets the ball real on way to all fields. You know pitching wise. My social was the manager. I've said you gotta get them in the middle of coaching. He's gonna hurt his arm which he did so he did the time john. You know it's it's i mean it's it's it's it's it's kinda what al michaels used to always talk about. He said you know. And you could be reading a book when when dow hitting for the oakland a.'s. Reggie jackson you stop breathing. When otani pitches or comes to the play you pay attention. Yep so. I don't know if you can say it any better than that. I mean. i'm sure people could say much more eloquently bob cops. This comes to mind when we talked about that. But yeah he's a special player and You know if you're very angel fan you know or you got this. see tom. Seaver strike out ten batters. You know in april what day april twenty. Second nineteen seventy right. You know just to think that you were there or you get to see. Otani do some of the things he does. That's what makes baseball game. It is jim. I appreciate your time. I think I think Who who's that. What's what's the name your dog. That's you know Idea that teddy grossman's world thing done man. He's ninety years old. My i have a stepson with autism. Spencer sits up. Let's name him teddy grossman. We have a human teddy grossman who lives in santa monica. And then we have jedi. Grossman was barking in the background of a wired hair dachshund about an hour south of from From atlanta got him five years ago the day jordan speech at the two balls in the water we were our away from those spring dachshund farm where we got the handle drove twelve hundred miles from palm beach to get him when the speed dumped a couple of balls in the water on twelve which i had done too so i know it's you know. Of course he's not supposed to be. Jim paul well. Let's see him throwing up into johnny bench. One day. jim see how world so take care. Thanks for the call. Jim look for my call again..

"Goodfellas goes costa. I'm not a fan of resorts Where you're spread out. I like to go to a hotel where i go straight up in an elevator. So here i am staying in this spot that they put us up To resort it was like half a mile from the main desk. And you know they wanted us. Even though the shotgun start was like eleven in the morning they wanted us to Be picked up like seven. Go there and have breakfast. And whatever like oh my god. That's our this is when i was. Espn was a single man. I was out late. Whatever and i'm like. I don't wanna wake up that early. Fine a wake up. That early woke up that early and Standing in front of my Spot getting ready to be picked up to be brought to the main desk to go all the way out there. No nobody's coming. They told me to be out there too. Certain time. and someone's gonna come get still nothing. So i called the main desk. I'm just taking a little breath here. You know. But i'm i'm a little heated. You know how it can get you. Jerry didn't want to be up early. So i hopped i busted up my flip phone and i'm waiting for you know I call the front desk. And i'm like. Is there anybody there who can tell me when this lift is coming to take me to you so i can get to this golf course on time and the person who answer the phone and says there's a bunch of people here from the tournament waited ready to go and i'm like exactly i need to be with them. Can you put somebody from the tournament on the phone. And the member of the hotels like is there someone here from such and such tournament and your perform person go. Yeah i'm with that tournament. Well rich eisen wants to speak to you and get on the phone in there like hello. I'm like are you at this tournament. Yeah i'm with the tournament where where is the you know. I'm trying to be calm because you know you never know trying to be polite. Because that's my default and i'm like but where is the ride. I think it should be there any minute rich and i'm like well. Who is this. So i know. And he goes. This is brooks robinson almost robinson. I wanted somebody who's managing the tournament. Playing one of the nicest guys ever this is brooks robinson. And that's how i welcome. Jim palmer the program. How are you. i'm good i like. He was a nice guy when he was playing third night. Through those rockets down the mvp in the seventy world series right so You know the one of the great all star games was the seventy one austin where he was played in two hours eight minutes and there were like eight home runs. All by hall of famers reggie gets. The i was actually warming up by blue. Star of the game for the american league would go to win the cy young and the mvp in his rookie year. But reggie at once so far there was complete. Silence i mean because everybody's watching to see how far the ball went one way up on the roof and you know the light tower a little bit like the natural except you know very levinson wasn't producing we had like and stuff. Gm reggie on the show Just a couple of weeks ago and He i asked him about that home run. He said it was born. Out of sal. Bando telling him before he went to that. All star game don't embarrass us and he thought to the matter of fact he did. He most certainly did. Not but i was going at. What's funny is that you know. We played the the reds in world series year before. And you know we ended up winning. What game four. To four games at one. And you know brooks brooks made all i mean you you just don't i mean he was good as he was sixteen gold gloves. You don't get the opportunities in one world series to make all the place de made. I mean you know and i mean it kind of started in game. One when lee may singled in a run to hang her in the two home run. And then i told him to up. So i've gone through my pretty much my whole. And then that's the ball that brooks catches going over the bag and from the coaching box. One hopper blue-collar throw ellie may so now i figure okay. Johnny bench comes up. I pitch in four and five. And i you know what i pitched them away in the world series. I'll try to go up in it. He hits this rocket in a hole and brooks of course is does bench. Cisco's it's just not. This is not fair and i just figured you know i'll see what johnny convention can do. On on the fastball. You know up in well. I found out but which was there to save me. Yeah you know when you talk about. Yeah he was a fabulous player. But what. I mean person everywhere. I've ever gone over the years. Nobody that i've ever met said anything bad about on one of those korpi guys to have as a teammate. And no i mean i see. I'm seventy five books. He's probably eighty four. Thank somewhere in that range. He's great role model. I mean if you wanted to kinda mir be like when you get to the big leagues at nineteen. When i did and books. He's twenty seven was like that. You're removed from being the most valuable player in the american league. It's somebody like bruce. Jim palmer here on the rich. Eisen show Jim how would have gone if there was a front office. Executive with the baltimore orioles who Armed with numbers like spin rate and exit velocity would've walked into earl weaver's office and told him this is who's starting today and this is how long your pitchers gonna go against that other team because these are the numbers third time through the order. Howard earl weaver have handled something like well. You know it's funny. I mean earl earl was the kind of ahead of the curve with a weaver cards. You know stat. yes you know. He didn't know exactly when or how current they were. You know he relieved me once tippy martinez Up in new york. And i had a four to one lead is made in my career You know they went to hit a an infield hit and then you know score was four to one or something like that. So dippy comes out. He's well rested. You know i'm happy about that. You know they. There's two outs in the ninth inning. And you know have been nice to have a complete game but you know it's kind of i just was looking for wins. I'd already had enough complete games and girl comes out. And he know he's two for twenty. It was that was the only two for twenty three. And i said well actually you know. He was over twenty one and his last two hits so was arrested tippy martinez on a curb. All down away shortstops head that beat us and the other was an upper deck. Homerun twelve sending When he had pitched by straight days and his curveball was meandering up to home plate. And i said well see numbers. Don't tell you the whole story. And even today we all know. That's not the cage. You know we have you know signal does. Are you know. He's a nasty guy that worked with mike. Elias who's now the case. The president that these operations and all the more you know he was kinda telling us how important runs are. And you know. I mean you know if you do enough analytical things well you can save no thirty five thirty seven runs whatever your. You're and whatever so. We're walking out of the stadium about two and a half ago. And i should say you know i kind of i went back to two thousand seven.

That's a perfect game, though, isn't it? Don't say the opponent, though. Ah, yeah. Oh, yes, it is. Brandon's Seattle Mariners was a Jim Palmer for the Orioles. No, no, it's John means perfect game right now. It was a guy reached on an air. So count, no perfect game and non perfect game. No, that's all the more 18 to nothing. Sunday. Mariners got no note again that that team a lot then no, not true. Looking like three years to find six runs, eight hits and no errors for the Mariners. No runs. No hits, no errors That should count is a perfect game. Well, I gotta go. I got on base. It's not well, but yeah, but he's the picture. If you see if you walk a guy, I'm over your no hitter to begin with. You could throw a no hitter and, you know, walk three or four dudes. I'm like you know where it doesn't. There's not an error on the box score there. What? What is going on? Struck out and he dropped ball catcher didn't get it. Divert. Oh, no. Uh, that reminds me here. You guys want to hear a moment of Jason Dick baseball excellence from his bus boy story had been ninth grade playing junior varsity baseball at round Rock High school on my friend. What was your Stephen something? Steven Johnson. Why? You gotta bring Steve Johnson and well, Steven Johnson's has gotta be a record. I'm almost positive. Because he struck out 22 batters in a high school game. 22 batter stop the math for a second seven inning game. Okay? Oh 22 batters Only 21 out's okay. How can you stretch? How do you strike out? 22 batters? The guy got no basis like you got the ball. You got a lackluster catcher back there. You dropped the ball chasing Buster Boy. Dick is not on me. You're like, Hey, let's break a record states that I'm gonna drop the third strike on this guy throws heat. He throws in an insane, like just dives into the dirt slider. And so yeah, these guys, they're just swinging and missing involved that are uncatchable and Yeah, there's some of them advanced made it to first because the other catcher's got throw anything. Where whatever, and I don't know. I guess I didn't complete the play enough times. And so you have my guy struck out 22 batters in a seven inning game. You're welcome, Stephen. Yeah. I mean, is there for you? You did that on purpose just so we could get 22 case? Yeah, let's do it. So, what happened to him if I didn't go on to greatness? Um, I don't know. We were there. The competition levels were all over the place, and we might have been playing some guys who had no business being on the field. With the incredible round rock dragons When it came to baseball, we're gonna baseball, all right. They were getting baseball. Yeah, hey, was supposed to pitch for the Oakland A's yesterday but was unavailable after he broke his pinky finger. Playing a video game, huh? Tell me that he got so mad. He was like banging the control like I used to do in elementary. She insists that he did not do it in anger or frustration. Simply bad luck. He doesn't really fully explain, it says here on a video conference call, Luzardo demonstrated how his hand came out to his side and hit the top of a table. What he called a reaction to something that happened in the game did not share what game he's playing. Excuse me, but he says it was not out of anger or frustration. Was it like I mean, I could see if you're playing like one of those interactive we games like if you're playing tennis or bowling or something like that, But I still have my old school nes controller. I only have one. I still have some games. I don't know. I think my mom sold the actual box which still kills me to this day. But on it One whole side of it like this whole side just has like chunk marks in it because like when I would die about to beat the game with one guy, you hit it like a bank. Oh, let's see here you feel Hey, Seuss's pain, apologized to the team, says, quote on the 23 year old kid. I make mistakes. I feel like a lot of people don't realize that we are people as well. "My bed. All right. Well, let me get a phone call in here. J D from Baltimore is up on CBS Portrayed. Right? J D. How you doing, sir? Good. You I'm okay. I'm okay. I'm listening to the sports when my sports taken 157 the fan Anyway, I'm gonna be 70 years old next next month. Okay, A bit of sports fans of 1958 my soul, the sun death game between the Colts and the and the Giants when I was seven, and like the side that I guess you could call me a traditionalist I hate with baseball has become Hate the openers. I hate the 17 games. We don't like the designated hitter and I've gotten used to it. I mean, I'm always ready with Jim Palmer, seeing how many times he pitched a complete game that's almost unheard of today. You know to me they came to the worst. Down football. Um, it's gotten better in something that come to the second question protocol. But the whole thing is to make money. You make money with offense. That's what the offense have Ah, basically edge on the defense. That's why I want to say I agree with you on both fronts. Uh, footballs I don't like the way for balls can come with you. They have bent over backwards to make. The offense is more prolific, but at least it is exciting. I'll give you that much that while it might not be the football that you and I grew up with At least the product that they're giving you today is tremendously exciting. The one that I even feel more different about than the others is basketball because some peoples are nobody plays any defense. Tall one. I want it all isolation. Then it's great. But old school basketball was great, too, when it was based on playing defense and team ball and being unselfish and disciplined and like it's it's a different game, but both of them are great. And I hate the fact that people say Well, if you like old school basketball from the seventies and eighties, you have to hate the basketball today. No, you don't. And if you like the basketball from today and you are around during the seventies and eighties. Oh, my God. It was so unmarketable. What do you talking about? It was great. Just because it's different doesn't mean it has to be better or worse. I'm agreeing with you that I don't think baseball is as good as it used to be. I'll give this seven inning. Like I said, with case you want to have a month, the seven inning double header the start the runner at second base star Next training's I'll give that all a pass because I firmly believe they're doing it. Because they're trying to put the players in the most safe positions. They don't want to put them at further risk. And if it means they're gonna tinker with the game to do it, I get it doesn't mean I have to like it, but I can get it. As long as after we beat the coronavirus back. We go back to playing baseball the way that we used to appreciate called Thanks for checking in. All right, look. College basketball talk coming up next. Brian.

"These are some of the all time great in the history of the game. You've been following it and covered it for a while. And you grew up as a big baseball fan. Did anyone of the passing of the great that we've lost over the last couple months hit more hard at home for you than any of the others? You know, it's appreciate you asking that question because it's it's one that we just can't get away from because every time you try to forget all the tragedy of the year we lose another Hall of Famer. Like most recently, any guarantee. I'd say a couple things, Joey, Um, as you said, Yes, I grew up a huge sports fan, a huge baseball fan. Specifically, even though I live in Southern California, now specifically I grew up in the great State of Michigan. Huge Tigers fan. Listen, Durning har well every night. What alkaline passed last last April. You know that that hit I mean, K line even up is old as he was. He always carried himself with grace and class, and it was in great shape and He was almost to the end and in uniforms during spring training at times in Lakeland, and I always loved going through Lakeland, Florida, stopping to see the Tigers and seeing out K lines locker in the clubhouse and seeing him in uniform. You know that hit and then, of course, most recently Hank Aaron hit You know, I mean, Aaron is Like, um Like Jim Palmer said their hall of Famers and then there are Hall of Famers. And you know what? Palmer's a Hall of Famer himself, but you know, you get what he met. I mean, there's certain guys, I can't hear it. Willie Mays that are at the top that You know when you lose Hank Aaron. I mean, it's not just baseball. It's on American hero, a civil rights. I can, and that was tough. And you know the hits just keep comin. I mean, one thing. I'll use your question here too real quick. Throw in as well. We lost it in the baseball writers world We've lost a few. And today yesterday we lost Mel Antonen covered for a long time for USA Today. He was a friend of many of us. Mateo is such a good heart and a friendly face in the press box. And you know, some of us in the writer's world are reeling from that loss just in the last 24 hours. And, you know, I was talking to a friend of mine and Jody. That's one thing about this pandemic. I think that the longer we're in it, it hits home more and more. It seems like with all these Hall of Famers we lost and just talking baseball world. I've lost a bunch of friends, Writer scouts in the Hall of Famers. And this stuff keeps coming in waves in the promise. We're all like isolated at home in like with You know so much being canceled, like even concerts. It's like we keep this sadness. The sad events keep accumulating. And there's not the happier events out there like hey, we're going to see Jimmy Buffett next week or whatever it is, there's not that stuff available that balances the sadness, so it just seems like the sad events. Like these deaths you're talking about just they keep piling up, and they become such a heavy burden to carry And then Tommy Lasorda passing. They had a private service for him and Dodger Stadium a couple weeks ago, and I saw it. I just saw red a little bit about it. But Normal times. I mean, Tommy Lasorda would have. They would have had a huge celebration and Dodger Stadium of his life and you know it would have been packed and fans could have gone on in just that communal aspect of everybody getting together would have Helped him solidify Tommy's legacy and and help lift up everybody else. But We can't do that right now. And that's I think what more than anything really, really becomes burdensome. Your point is an excellent one. I was here in Philadelphia when Ricky aspirin past decade ago, whatever it was They had a public viewing in a major Philadelphia park, where just for hours, fans lined up to be able to just go past and make their last sentiments known to Ashbourne in his family and the like. It went on for hours and hours and hours and hours because he was such a popular figure in the city of Philadelphia would have been exactly the same for Tommy Lasorda in L. A. And it's a tragedy on top of the tragedy that something like that couldn't be had At this time. Scott has always great stop. Appreciate it whenever you come on. Thanks for we're hopping aboard. You know, we talked plenty is we get that much closer to spring training. I look forward to it. Jody, do you in the listeners Stay safe.
