"Welcome back to offer all the show where we talk about all things space exploration in pop culture today. We are talking about the nineteen Eighty-three film, the right stuff based off of the book. I'm Ariel Waldman. I'm norm. Chan I'm so excited for this interview. You did because the right stuff is it's kind of almost like a documentary style movie about the mercury era. Absolutely. And that's why our guests are just really awesome to have. We have tests very own Adam Savage, an astronaut Jim Newman, and Jim has been involved in multiple spacewalks. And like a lot of incredible stuff in space. I mean going to space it all is pretty incredible in and of itself. But but Jim really is a gem and atom, of course, is a huge space fan and loves the mercury era has a spacesuit from the air replica spacesuit from the era. So let's take a listen. So your conversation. Today. I'm joined by Dr Jim Newman. A NASA astronaut who has been on four space shuttle missions, six spacewalks. And was formerly the director of the NASA human spaceflight program in Russia. Thanks so much for joining us today. Yeah. So you know, the right stuff came out in nineteen eighty three. It was based on a book, it's very going over the history of human spaceflight, and how it got started and the framing of going from aviation into humans speaks like, what did you think of the movie? What did you like I washed it, of course, many many years ago? Then I watched it again recently, and it was really a treat. I really enjoy the movie is factually quite accurate. Okay. I'm curious about like what you what you were often. When I watch a movie I haven't seen in twenty or thirty years. I'm surprised by what I remember wrong. Is. There was stuff that you like were inspired by the first time, you watch watches the second time like oh that didn't quite work out or. Something that was very different. Talking about of course is the right stuff this ethos. This idea that the people going into space have something different. And I wouldn't say that. That's not completely true. But it's not people go into space, just like you and me only more. So right. I would put it, but we really struck me in watching it again and this time with my wife. Was the dichotomy? I think where we were then and where we are now, which I'm glad is a very very different place. But explicitly what do you mean? Well, there was the politics of the country or the technology that NASA had to launch people into a particularly the technology and particularly access to space. I was fortunate to fly during the shuttle era when we were able to get a lot of humans into space. And of course, we made a great deal of private because if you look at those people who are in that movie, I would say they're not Representative of our country at large. How do you think about? I mean to me what I really loved watching it, you know, so being millennial and like I didn't grow up during this era. But like watching what people went through the thing that excited me is that it was actually reflective of the experimental nature of human spaceflight that we still see today. So watching, you know, the with the experimental airplanes, and how those work was very reminiscent of verge. Galactic. And you know, they've got the white Knight two which carries the space spaceship too. And it's the same sort of configuration that you saw Chuck Yeager in with x one airplane. And so to me that was really cool bid of like getting the feeling that we're still continuing on this experimentation. Yeah. So I mean did mercury. You know? I I know we're all a bit young for having. None of us were adults during the mercury era, but did mercury, you know, influence, either of you a lot as you sort of grown up with the knowledge of what those guys went through enough to predate mercury. And until I was saying that what affected me the most was watching the country..

The International Space Station Begins

"So today is another very special episode because we're celebrating the twentieth. Anniversary of the beginning of the international space station. The I s a critical mission in this story is S T S eighty eight. It's the shuttle mission that brought the unity module to join the first element Zara in space. It was the first ISS assembly mission for the space shuttle, the first time I s elements join together and the first spacewalks for ISS assembly and maintenance SDS Eighty-eight launched on December fourth and return, December fifteenth nineteen ninety eight so tell the story we're bringing in Jerry Ross, he's a former astronaut and flew with Mr. Cabana, Mr. Bob. Cabana the commander and currently the director of the Kennedy Space Center on SDS Eighty-eight. Ross went out with astronaut Jim Newman back during the mission for the first three spacewalks of assembly and maintenance to give you some idea of how cool that is where over two hundred now for I s assembly and maintenance base walks at the time of this recording. So with no further delay less giambra head to our talk with mister Jerry Ross for the twentieth. Anniversary of the international space station and the milestone mission SDS Eighty-eight enjoy. Jerry. Thank you so much for being here today. I really appreciate you actually taking the time to come on here. I'm glad to be with you. So today, we're going to be talking about a milestone mission SDS ADA. This was a lot of I this was the first time that the first ISS assembly mission, the first ISS, our international space station space walk to actually do assembly and maintenance very important milestone in the beginning of the international space station program. So I kind of wanted to start by just sort of setting the scene. This is late nineteen ninety eight hour talking about what is what's going on at NASA where we coming from what's going on right now. What's going on one thousand nine hundred eight? Okay. Well, for me, personally, I'd been on one of the MIR missions SEO seventy four when we'd gone up and visit the MIR station, and we actually added the docking module to the MIR station that all subsequent SP. Official visits. There used to dock to the MIR station after that was done. I went into a fairly lengthy period of leading the spacewalking team to try to figure out how we were going to build a space station from spacewalking standpoint, we build a large cadre of crew members and engineers and and flight controllers. We went through evaluated every piece of hardware to make sure that we could physically do what we're supposed to do. Or what the engineers needed us to do to do the assembly and maintenance activities on that? We found many things that were not adequately designed and sent those back to the program and said, we can't do that. And we worked hand in hand with them to figure out ways to fix things and get things ready for us to be able to confidently build the station and maintain it. So this was coming from experiences on MIR to right because that was also a collaborative. Endeavor even said, you were talking about the docking module that fit the US shuttle to the MIR. Right. We didn't do any spacewalking on MIR except for one or two times. Okay. And that really didn't feed into to this effort. But certainly what we did learn on MIR about longer term stays in space in the logistics of it and how to do the care and feeding for the crew members that were up there for long periods of time. That's all certainly folded into our our thought processes in our planning and our execution of station. Once we start staffing it. Okay. So then how how did you even start with if learning to spacewalk, and knowing what you were going to do to actually assemble the international space station. Okay. Well, I had done five spacewalks already by that sorry for spacewalks by that time

"We were very quickly able to identify where they weren't where we were supposed to be looking and to their credit. They had to identical lasers same model, same brand and everything, which is a great idea. And so they set them up on opposite sides of the water. Add just hand holding these lasers from the opposite side. They could now picture your ten miles away from me carrying or nine point six miles away from you want to be precise. Now, picture. I'm way way over here and I've got just a hand held laser and I can point it and shoot straight in your eye. Yes, that's pretty good aim on my part, right? Yes. Well, that's what was happening very quickly. So we were seeing this laser barrels shoot straight as and just looks like you see the light kind of searching around Arkin up, then it looks like boom, it's hitting you right in the eyes. Whoa. Okay. What's the height on the other side? Because we're just. Banding nine point six miles away, and we're seeing this laser shining and Jim Newman confirmed. Yep. They're just standing normal height and even when they'd get down pretty close to the water, they could hit us in the face with this laser. And so you had been thinking this should be obscured? Yeah. Okay. So so we went home and the earth is tip for our show are things. So yeah, I gotta say I was pretty gobsmacked, wow. I was not expecting to have this laser look like it's hit me straight in the eye across the water because you should have approximately curve of seventeen feet essentially in the way blocking it. So you're gonna do your special pleading and explain why this was about tasks? Exactly what I'm going to do, but I've got to say this is the most compelling evidence I have seen for flatter. Yeah, I can totally see why someone looking at this would say, oh, there you go guys standing over there hits me with the laser. So first problem is we never were able to make contact with Jim, Newman's, bright light on. On his telescoping pole. So the one twenty three feet up. Yeah. So we couldn't see that we could see this laser that slower. Yes, strange. That should chats confusing. That's a little bit of a head scratcher. And this is a fairly low powered laser. So the first thing I did just to try to deconstruct what was going on here, but was to walk one hundred feet away. Approximately, again measured by just me taking steps, have the people on our side, shine their laser toward a chair I was holding and they showed it towards my pants which were just as well. And I could see that already a beam that was coming out of the laser. Looking about a millimeter, thick was already about four to five inches in diameter. By the time, it hit my pant leg. So I demonstrated this for them. Oh, okay..

"The democrats win and should this bill passed why are they bound by it this is a law made by men who kept why can't be broken it's not god's law it's not like you know i mean especially if it's meant for making people's lives better why are they bound by about by the tax cut yeah i mean you jabri i heard because because in order to raise taxes they would have to overcome a filibuster in the senate and the the assumption is that even if republicans lose control of both the house and the senate that they're not going to lose control the senate to the tune of sixty votes that the democrats are not going to have a filibuster free or proof senate like they did during seventy four days of the first year the obama administration seventy four business days of they're not going to have that and so as a result the republican tax cuts will in all probability stay in place and and and the democrats are gonna be stuck try you know have uh as was the case during the clinton administration as was the case to a large extent during the obama administration uh the democrats are going to be stuck try and having to make terrible uh hard decisions within the context of the spending for framework that they have in the tax revenue if they have and in the midst of all of it the republicans are made constantly screaming about the debt and the deficit as they did throughout the obama administration as they did throughout the clinton administration as they did throughout the carter administration they never scream about debt and deficits when there is a republican in the white house they always do it when it's democrats so that's why no jim newman 2020 we have a democrat is president can they ruled rolling back no like get all the president does not have bob no the president doesn't control legislation legislation all all seen all taxes after by congress the president merely signs that he has no you can't do that in so so that's that's gone here a thank you for the call we'll be right back you're listening to thom hartmann visit thom hartmann dot com audio and video archive.
