"We feel very grateful and you know. The senior bowl is always an incredibly important part of the The pre draft process was it for you know for the nfl folks for the players that you were able to get involved in it. Was it more important this year just because of the circumstances because of no combine because a lot of these kids didn't get to you know or at least some of the kids didn't get to have a fall season was was even more important of an event. You know this time around Yeah i think it was. I think that's fair to say you know. I think smart teams have really moved away from combine evaluations. To be honest. i'm their gotten back there. Really the value of the combine is for the medicals the interviews Not as much on the on the workout stephanie. More i mean i was a part of teams that get burned by that stuff evaluating guys in shorts and t shirt so You know i. I really think. The teams are really focusing on our week. And the other all star games because it's actual real football but no it certainly surly more important and we told our we told our hundred thirty six guys when a guy here during a unique position because they're probably only hundred thirty six guys in this draft cycle That are going to be interviewed. Face-to-face with plexiglass obviously this year but interviewed face-to-face with all thirty two teams and be evaluated on the field for an entire week. And just that that that exposure to these decision makers is absolutely critical. I mean they're going to try to pull off road as this spring. But that's you know that's going to be mostly scouts crisscrossing the country doing that. It's not going to be gm's director level guys. The guys are going to be making the calls in april so Now it is without without the combine this year win without a normal day circuit Game in the nfl pa game. This was yeah. I do feel like the game took on a more.

"But more, you know, more to what we're talking about here on the football side of things. You know what I really wanted to do was create something as close to a NFL personnel department is I could. So, you know, one thing we did last year that we'd never done in the past year was, we hired a staff of former NFL scouts, the scout the country, and we have four guide, they'd sixty nine years of NFL experience. So, you know, that was important to me, because it gave me sets of is all around the country, that I, I knew what they were looking at there were well connected with among the scouting community, but also the agent community and at the schools. So, you know, again, because we don't have an NFL budget. You know, our guys can't get out and travel a bunch. You know, they can't you know they couldn't get on planes. They couldn't stay night to know tell so really wherever we could get to driving distance and get back home that night. That's that's you know that's what we did. So, you know, one thing we're really proud of, of one hundred. Fourteen guys we invited to last year's game. We saw one hundred and five of them live in games. So that was that was huge to have that to have that staff in place. And again, they were all under contract with their teams couldn't pay him a huge. You know, huge salary really anything to live off. So it was important. We found some guys that were still under contract. You know, we went through the right channel that contacted the reformer GM's and, and they were they were okay with it, and, you know, then working with us so that, that worked out, great, you know. And we really had a tighten it staff. We, we did conference calls all the time. I got him senior bowl geared, aware and business cards and emailed, and really tried to make it as an official position as possible. You know, so that was that was really big. And you know, we, we built out the roster last year probably about eighty percent of it. And then I called around seventeen of the third pretty two teams so we could thanksgiving and we kind of let the league help help us shape the back into the roster gonna want to bring in the guys they wanted to see because again this is for those thirty two teams not for not for us. So really tried to give the NFL some official feedback on this thing, which they never had before. So that was, you know, that was a big part of the process, and like you to looted to this being an important stage. It's the example I used in the in the orientation last year with the players, I use the example of Isaiah win. And you know they win the tackle from Georgia two years ago. He comes to the senior bowl with a partially torn labrum, and he has two great days, the practice, especially in one on one. Period. And then he tear that tears tears labor them fully estimate. The combine mistpro day. Never runs. Never done anything else. And he probably came into the senior bowl. Most teams probably second third round grades on it and he ended up a first round pick..

"Dr toe, and five and go five and five, but I honestly felt like Marty Schottenheimer should have won coach of the year that year considering the you know what we were playing with what the roster looked like. And as young as we were in, you know, just trying to get things turned it instead he gets a pink slip. So just that's kind of that's the Redskins in a in a nutshell, though over the last twenty five years. I I really felt like mardi was going to get that team turned around really quickly. But yeah, so what what they wanted me to do the new regime that got brought it. And they wanted me to I just moved my fiance out to the west coast. We're living in Arizona doing the west coast and you know didn't even didn't even. Have a ring on her finger when we moved, and they wanted me to move to Washington and work in how they I don't know if they felt like I was ready to be on the road. I was twenty six years old. You know, maybe I wasn't you know in hindsight him. It's a grind and, you know, but they wanted me to move in house, and, and work in Washington. And I said, well, I just moved it's girl a year ago. She's now, my wife of, of sixteen years. But is there any way that I can, you know, look for something else that would keep me on the west coast and then God that how I didn't know a lot of people around the league? But I I call Jason light from is working at the patriots at the time the GM and the buccaneers now. And just calling the people that I knew, and see if they had anything open and thank God Jason. Yeah. We actually have a west coast opening being go down and talk to Scott, the elderly, and he calls back. Five minutes later. He's like, yes. Got like to bring in for an interview and when out there a couple of days later and got that job. So I didn't I didn't have to. To, to DC able to stay out in Phoenix and due west coast for the patriots. That's awesome. So what's interesting to me about that? Jim is Crimea from wrong. But the patriots typically like to hire guys with no experience. Right. They don't they almost don't want you to have worked for another organization because they want you to teach they want to teach you their ways rather than whatever was in your head from Green Bay in Washington, my off on that or is that kind of that kind of accurate. Yeah..

"I know a lot of it and actually looked up some of it, but I prefer to let my guest kind of tell the story of where you grew up. You know what did you play and kind of how did you how did you into this business? Yeah. Well, we got a little time. Usually doesn't fit radio show. It's doing podcast. No, I grew up in northern Michigan and a place called traverse city you know, people like that's how I got into scouting, and I tell him really in the NFL, the only advantage that I had with that, I knew and I wanted to do from the time out about six or seven years, old, honestly, grew up around the game of football, and my dad was a coach then what he's stepped away from teaching and coaching we moved to a new town and just by chance there, the kid who I became best friends with his dad was the varsity coach at that school. So just, you know, grew up, you know, two days and, you know, being the equipment manager when I was in elementary school, and running water bottles out at time out and all that stuff that just grew up around the game and then grew up playing it. You know, played a lot of baseball and basketball in high school as well. And when I got done with high school, my only opportunities. To keep playing with with small school football division two division three. So this was pre internet. You couldn't just get on and Google, you know how to become an NFL scouts. So I had no clue. It was just, you know, I idea what I was doing. And I got waitlisted at the university of Michigan. So I was really planning to go play division three football. And once I got into Michigan, I figured, oh, well, that's how people must do it. They must work for, you know, a big, big powerhouse football program or something like that. I really again, just had no idea. And then I went to Michigan for, for four years. My last two I went down and volunteered. And the Atlantic department did a lot with the football team did some stuff on the weekends with the basketball team networks would come into town to make a little money. And then I get sent out resumes and cover letters, really. And back then there was no internships, and the scouting side of things and your only your only way to get your foot in the door was through the. Office. So then out resumes and cover letters to all the PR department through on the league got rejection, letters back from all of them, and except for the Packers and the Packers called and, and brought me over there for training camp. And it was the year. They won the Super Bowl in ninety six and at the end of camp they needed they needed extra help for the year. So they asked me to stay on. And really that was the it was an unbelievable year and all I did was whenever I was done with, with my PR responsibilities for the day. If I've got a break in the day, I would go up to the scouting department, and, you know, bother John Schneider, and Reggie McKenzie to sit and watch tape with those guys and there was five future GM's on that staff. So it was just one of those right place, right time, meet the right people type of thing. And, you know, when you when you broke in not out of Princeton in Washington, that year that was my first year on the road is a scout. John Schneider had been hired to be the right hand guy for mardi Schottenheimer. And in John..

"It's it can definitely changed the game we've seen it for the steelers over the years it can completely change your game but all right this next one from mike spencer if you if you could go back to your first year of scouting or covering the draft and fix your biggest mistake from what year would it be he says his would be not having calvin pryor as a top ten player ooh that's a good one i'm trying to find i remember my first year my first year be are would have been two thousand twelve i guess so mattress richards i mean that that's the one i really wish i could change i think a lot of people in the nfl tell you the same thing but but do you think that trent changed as a player when he got to the end without a doubt that thing like it doesn't mean the evaluation was wrong yeah it just it changed yeah i mean he got hurt and then he gained weight and just had a lot of stuff going on off the field the one that like to be and i've told this story before but two thousand twelve at the combine at will i at the senior bowl spin everyday with the russell wilson then we go to the combine and i got to go to all his private workouts where you know like warming up the night before he was gonna throw on the field i had an end with his trainers they were i was twenty five years old or whatever they loved me so it was hey come tag along and i spent so much time with russ that year and i kept telling his agents is trainers like man if he were six to he would be my number two quarterback in the draft and hopefully those guys still like me enough that they would vote for me because like i it was it was just he was so amazing but he's my height and i just kept saying that there's no way there's no way and so i.

"A negative on his scouting report that people have a hard time not thinking of so i do think that's why even though they're both stylistically very similar both big backs who can catch have speed it's just when you think saquon barkley you think boy scout when you think joe mix and you think of that awful video that we all watched so that would be why to is to is question of are we a fan of the modern day workhorse running back i think without a doubt it's just that they've become unicorns because of how the league has really changed involving running backs in the passing game so much when you count them guys that are really on the field for three downs that are excellent runners excellent pass protectors you know viable pass catchers it's david johnson levian bell i think saquon can be that guy but we can't say it until we see it i think zeke is that guy and i would argue for net is probably get along internet and todd girl hot gray fernande girly gets spelled a decent amount yeah i think we'll see that zeke this year i think they'll give him some breeders with rod smith just because they are that guy but man you just don't want to to wear them out so much because they are so important in games in late in the season so you know the old school workhorses probably gone i think the modern day workhorses more like what marshall faulk used to be yes where twenty twentyfive touches but we're also going to make someone else in to do a little bit of the dirty work especially like in the middle of the game where we maybe don't need you as much so that you are fresh for this fourth quarter drives whether it beat it keep a lead or two for those big comebacks but i'm with you man i i think there's like five or six true workhorse guys and we'll see if guys like darius guys can get to that level but i do prefer having that one superstar running back that you can you know game plan around and takes the pressure off the quarterback but it's just it's hard to find those guys yeah that's a that's a great question and coaches love just keeping them on the field because it doesn't give away anything you're doing they're just raw reliable.

"Is going gonna be the challenge for me going forward is is you know learning the rest of the country but the great thing is i just got with exo this week who's you know the the big video provider for the nfl dv sport next does and they're they're a partner of ours and they're they're outfitting our officers with all the tape we need so looking forward to that and get my get my hands dirty on that stuff but in terms of this year's class you know in my role right now at the game i'm really focused on a quarterbacks i'm going to the manning passing academy next week which i'm super jacked up about you know if you work for an nfl team you're you can't go there so this is going to be my first chance to get over there and archie archie was nice enough to invite me so just to get get a look at these quarterbacks first hand up and i've seen jarrett's didn't play some play three times last fall and then guys like drew lock and you know the family kid at north carolina state i mean there's a number of my discuss the list list in front of me but i really really looking forward to watching this quarter class and if you know jarrett's did him has graduated already i've already looked into that because if we could get an auburn or alabama player of his caliber down here in the game next year that'd be great and especially if the quarterback position it's been a long time since since there's been an auburn alabama quarterback of any stature come down to the game i think brody royal is probably the last guy maybe jason campbell from auburn so i'm looking forward to seeing those guys did him in lock in that group well that's awesome in jim we're looking forward to seeing what you do with the senior bowl we're excited to see the great tradition that is the senior bowl continue in not only the nfl world but also our media world and we just want to say thanks a ton for giving us some time today and we're we wish you the best of luck we really can't wait to see what you do with this event you know i appreciate it guys when you get down here let let me know when you get done and what and we'll head over to.

"Amazing stab yeah so so you know every free minute i had away from pr i was up there badgering those guys in bothering them and you know it's gonna let me watch tape with them and learn learn from them so it was so that was that was that year and then nothing nothing fulltime materialized for me so i actually moved to new york city and hooked on with an agency for a few years and you know one of the agents that that worked in our group the main recruiter was the guy that was a scout they pulled him out of they pulled him out of scouting you've got it for ten years his name was gary horton was a former college coach and you know like a lot of agencies they have a football guy to kinda help them recruit and sell the football side of things and gary was that guy for our group and he actually started out kinda of his own scouting private scouting business called the war room at the time and the two guys that he had working with them where me and a guy named todd mcshay so so we did that i did that for about four years working on the agent side and then doing the war thing part time and we were getting all our tape from danny green who was coach of the vikings with gary's good friend and he'd coached with so that was kind of my introduction to you know just qouting to scout and players is working with gary and then when john schneider got his first job in ability to hire staff in washington with marty schottenheimer in two thousand one he he gave me my first shot as a scout so i got got a job scout in the west coast moved to phoenix and kinda started from there so that's a long story but that's kinda how i got into it and you know unfortunately he right it right after i took that washington job gary and todd sold that war on business to espn which turned into scouts inc for a lot of money so i wasn't i wasn't a part of that but it was it was a great opportunity and all ever wanted to do with the scout so there was there was no.

"And that's usually not from the team side the team side usually airs on the side of caution with the prospects rather than pump up their value if anything that push it down a little bit to to not encourage kids to come early it's usually more from families than agents but but nothing that there's something has to be done on that front but yeah it would be if we could have all the draft eligible obviously our game we would we'd have a higher level of talent every year but that's that's probably a ways down the road on that note jim do you see any anyways and maybe this is part of that process of kind of partitioning the nfl to say hey we've got one hundred and fifty juniors declaring why don't we try to to give them the best chance to improve their stock from that january fifteenth deadline where something like the senior bowl would maybe help some of these guys or at least get them a couple more opportunities i i mean i know the rule is out there if you don't want contact with you know guys who are underclassmen eligible but it seems like that's kind of an outdated rule with so many guys every year making that declaration yeah you know you think about what the nba does where the player doesn't sign with an agent they can always go back the problem i feel like the problem with the nfl thing is that just what the timeframe between bowl games and then the agents get involved i it's really a sticky issue i mean i think everyone's cognizant of it i think the colleges are i think the nfl is you know there wasn't movement a couple years ago and it's you know it's kind of baffled me a little bit that more colleges haven't taken advantage of it but there was initiative really really spearheaded by coach sabin i think dabble at clemson some other coaches were involved where they were when you went to the pro days as a scout started two years ago each each school could give you think it was either up to five or six rising juniors that you could you know weigh and measure in run if you would want to you know there was supposed to be medical information provided there was supposed to be.

"Across the league right now i mean a ton of guaranteed money we know it's a long term deal most importantly this gives the cowboys the next two years of that really really good starting offense of line maybe longer if you continue to keep that core together there and you pose the question the rundown how long can the cowboys keep this window open listen it is crazy but it really comes down to obviously defense continuing to get better but what dak prescott are we going to get i know this offense of line is one of the best in the league top to easily and i know zeki leli a full season him is going to be a lot of fun no does brian anymore you've got hearns in there it's fine the defense is getting better like i said what dak prescott are we going to get and now with this move locking offense line you'd like to bet that it's the guy that played like a top fifteen quarterback recently and i might be one of those weird people that actually i feel like i'm on team dak because i look at what he did is rookie or and then what he did when zeke was in the lineup last year and he did it with does bryant kind of being a head case dropping a lot of balls and not being able to separate so i still i still believe the dak prescott can be a franchise quarterback i think doug prescott could win you a super bowl if you give him enough pieces and i think we'll find out this year if that's the case but like i asked in the rundown what what is the window here i don't believe that zeke elliott ever gets resigned there maybe he gets franchised once and then they let him walk i don't think demarcus lawrence is back after this year so build your strength and that's the offensive line we have a great running back you can just run into the dirt like a rental car and then let him go you have a quarterback who's not going to turn the ball over and if they've drafted well a defense they probably can string something together here but i'm with you i think that run is about two years before we get to the.
