"A smile on their face and they keep clapping. Do you know when to stop like wet thing when's the measuring stick to stop clapping? Because I'm like, when are they stuck? I will tell you the NASDAQ has a woman that very much could go right to Disney World immediately and just manage whatever show they've got. She's very good and she just she preps you. You warm up. You're like, okay, let's try it. Let's cheer and then she's like, no, no, no. You know, scarlet is a little no fact about Steve Young. You know, Steve was born in Salt Lake City, Utah, played for BYU while he was with BYU. He actually replaced the legendary Jim McMahon, all this kind of good stuff, but Steve played high school. Are you ready for this Scarlett you'll love this? Greenwich, Connecticut for our beloved Greenwich cardinals, right? Where he was in all state quarterback Steve correct me if I'm wrong he Steve even pitched a no hitter his senior year against the dreaded new Canaan rams. Now the reason I mention all this Steve is because our audience I'm quite a large percentage of it probably does hail from Fairfield county. But look, I'm talking about our amateur athlete here. I'm talking about sports gambling. I'm talking about NIL. I'm sure you saw the latest kind of judgment with Michael cloud and you yourself, your history, with our youth, and with developing these athletes, you know, how do you think sports gambling and NIL and its arrival is really impacting the future of these professional athletes? It's a wild west, especially for a young 16, 17, 18 year old athletes. We've used to generally protect them from the madness. And now the madness is upon them. And it's early. And they're going to have to we're going to have to figure it out with them. And we have to give them the resources to try to empower them in some way so they can make decent decisions. It's all the madness that you could expect and the difficulties and look, look at gambling. Look, there's gamblers anonymous, like gambling can be an addictive thing. And so for kids who are not fully formed, their brains are not fully formed. I mean, it's a very, very dangerous world right now. And we always knew, look, technology has done that. There's a lot of danger on the world. We've just got to figure out how to empower people to make good decisions. And now we have to do it for 16, 17, 18 year olds, even 15. 14 year olds who are showing incredible talent, they're going to get recruited there. Because I mean money floating around. There's going to be stuff that just now because it's a wild west. There's the NCAA can't do anything about it anymore. So in that way, it's going to be who has the most money and who and all the parts of it. And if various parts of it, all the negative parts of it are coming. And those stories will be hard to watch. It's difficult enough for players in their post playing career post retirement to make it in professional in the professional world. But it's difficult enough without being plagued by something like a concussion. And you played with them throughout your career and I will never forget that vicious hit you took on the third week of the 1999 season. I think that was the last play you had in the NFL. That was it? Yeah. That was the final. It's a violent sport. I think that the league has tried to make it safer for, I think, a good solid 15, 20 years they've been trying to make it safer. It's changed the game. It's more wide open and less quarterback. I would love to play today. The wonderful. But the injuries are real. Entries are real in high school. For soccer for hockey, for any sport. Do you think the NFL is doing enough? Is the question a lot? I know you want to say. And I think I know, I know. I have to ask it. You're the only one. Look, the NFL is on their mind There's no question it's a focus. Yet, I see doctor sills who runs the NFL's kind of health and wellness and I'm like, there's objective testing for head injuries that we've got to get on the sidelines of the blue tent. So that it's out there. It's being used. It's being used in college and we need to have in a scary because if you take the test and fail it and you tell everyone you're still fine and you're out of the game and now you can't get back until you can pass it to your career and impact who you are as a player testing we have to have. We have to think about as empowering the players because as much as we have neurologists world famous neurologist on the sideline, it's still subjective and the brain is impossible to see inside the brain, but we have objective testing to be able to do it. We've got to put it in the blue ten. So I wonder if the makeup of ownership might contribute to movement on that, a sense of urgency on that. And I bring this up because I noticed the MBA is allowing institutional investors sovereign wealth funds, pensions, endowments, and PE firms to build passive stakes and teams. And we know PE firms have a well established role in European sports. But the NFL is an outlier. It pretty much is family fun. Family owned. What needs to happen for the ownership there to consider letting big funds invest in its teams and what that changed the way that they respond to things like you were just talking about. Scarlett, you've seen some funds emerge for some minority stakes in NFL teams. So the NFL is allowing that. They haven't allowed kind of traditional private equity to get involved. I think it's inevitable. I think the market's been made. Owners are getting aware. And I think that the league is obviously in control of the big game in town. And so I think, but I think as a controlled market gets set, I think they're going to open it up. I think it's inevitable. Is this a two year thing? I don't think management of the teams won't change because of this. It's going to be everything that happens in a minority position. As you can see, it's the American royalty to own a football team in the NFL. And I think that's going to be generational. I think very few will change hands. As you've seen over the last ten, 15 years, one or two, Greg penner is now running the Denver Broncos for the Bolin family. That happens. That will happen periodically, but very, very rarely. And you can see the transactions are now at 5, 6, 7, maybe even $10 billion soon. And the people who can make those transactions, you get that. But the minority stakes, I think there's going to be a real market for it. That's Hall of Fame quarterback Steve Young on the Bloomberg business of sports talking to me scarlet and Bloomberg sports contributor Dan Schwartzman. And of course you can hear an extended version of that conversation right now on the Bloomberg business of sports podcast, go there, it's on demand at Bloomberg dot com slash

"No shortage of action in the first half Robert. Yeah, no kidding, Super Bowl 57 approaching halftime in Arizona, Philadelphia leading this shootout with Kansas City 21 to 14, the eagles though with four seconds left in this second quarter have the ball in an opportunity to tack on three more before Rihanna time. Chiefs fans won't like the news that on the previous drive Patrick Mahomes so far, 8 of 13 for 89 yards and a touchdown, he was tackled on a third down run. Not only short of the sticks, but he would limp off the field writhing and pain on the sideline. It appears to be a re aggravation of the high ankle sprain. He suffered in the divisional round win over the Jaguars, but still awaiting official word as we approach half time, all three eagles touchdowns, even one of the chiefs actually comes courtesy of Jalen hurts, one on a long touchdown to AJ Brown to rushing touchdowns to become just the second quarterback in Super Bowl history with multiple rushing touchdowns and you will never guess the first one. It's Jim McMahon from those Super Bowl shuffle bears 37 years ago, can you imagine? Sweetness didn't get in the end zone. Jim McMahon got in the end zone twice in that blow out of the Patriots long ago. The capitals have lost 6 straight games on Super Bowl Sunday after a four one loss to the San Jose sharks, the Maryland women much better. They came back from as many as 11 down. They knocked off Illinois 82 71. They've won three in a row at a very advantageous time for them. "Ohio is a good contestant. He got the second one is tricky. First one isn't easy, haven't asked it that much, and here he is. He's halfway home. The first quarterback to have two career Super Bowl rushing touchdowns Dan from Ohio, that is true. Jim McMahon. He danced smart. He did a little homework. He's not calling on a cell phone driving around Cincinnati. No, you can see my hands are up. You can see that I have no help. You don't hear him pressing the kitchen. When you have members who do that, like me crazy. Yes, it drives the marquee crazy when they're pressing your computer buttons and they make me ask the question for the 9 million time. You are doing it at the top of your head. That's what a good football trivia person does. First quarterback, Daniel. Two

"He loved track. Like he loved track at auburn, he was a great, great sprinter. He would have been an Olympian. It was almost no doubt about it. His skill wise he was there. I mean, he ran a four one three 40 at auburn. He liked football. He liked some of the elements of football. He liked baseball more than football. He liked the pacing of baseball the camaraderie of baseball. But really, he was coming. He was showing up the stadium. He was doing his job. He was leaving. I also just want to say Dan. He shows up with the readers, and they actually are skeptical of his 40 time. So Tom Flores is a coach, and he hasn't run a 40 on grass in pads, and you're on to four one 9. They don't believe it. They have them do it again on grass in pads at 225 pounds. Here's a four one 7. He ran it better the second time. His first major league at bat. He is first made out about September 2nd, 1986, royals, White Sox. He hits a grounder to second base. He beats it out. 3.6 seconds. It is the fastest second fastest recorded time ever from home to first for my right handed hitter. It's his first app at. The only guy I ran faster tape wise was Mickey Mantle. Yeah, I remember that. That's a joke. I do love this story when Bo got brought up to the royals because he was coming up and that was a veteran team. You had some, you had some crusty old veterans there. Tell the story when Beau first goes into the locker room. Well, he shows up. It's like so tone deaf, it's fantastic. With a stack of glossies of him with the Heisman Trophy. He signed them all and went locker to locker and left them on the seats, thinking like Frank white and George Brett, what they really need in their lives is an autographed picture of some 22 year old. And how mccray was the D 8s in his last year with the and he goes around following Bo and he takes the pictures and starts throwing them up in the air. And everyone starts throwing their own pictures up in the air. And George Brett looks around and he takes four of them and hangs him up by his locker. Everyone else says chucks him away. He was arrogant, but he was cocky. He was confident. He was not arrogant. He was very confident. I had an opportunity to first time I interviewed him. He had won the Heisman. I was working at CNN sat down and did an interview. And he had a really bad stuttering problem. And so you didn't really know about him, what you knew is what you watched with boat. And he was in a kind of careful in what he was saying and how he was saying it. But later on, I played golf with him and Jim McMahon. Oh, wow. And Bo putts one handed. And he was great because I let McMahon and Beau talk because I'm being a reporter or journalist. I wanted them to just have fun. So we were playing a round of golf in Chicago. And I just remember Beau punting one handed and I asked, I said, why are you putting one handed?

"So at least you could say, look, there's enough around Zach Wilson to where there's really no excuses. With Chicago Bears fans looking at Justin Fields, you can't judge Justin Fields. If he's going to be any good or not, because there's no talent around him. I mean, just go over that roster. See what they've brought in. I don't understand how you bring in a trade up to get a young quarterback. That you feel is going to be that franchise quarterback. And by the way, the Chicago Bears haven't had a franchise quarterback since probably Sid luckman in the 1940s. I knew you're going to go there. The key word there was franchise quarterback. Jim McMahon was a good quarterback. Jim McMahon also had one of the greatest defenses in the history of football, had a guy by the name of Peyton, first named Walter behind him, kind of helped. You know what I'm saying? I wouldn't say he's a franchise quarterback. Justin Fields could be that guy, but we'll never know because they are not surrounding him with any talent to help him. I feel for the kid. Good luck to Justin Fields. He's going to need it. Am I jumping on this Buffalo Bill's bandwagon? Are they your best team in the NFL should be should they be considered Super Bowl favorites? Should they? I'll tell you. I'm going to break that down for you next because I honestly, I'm torn on this one. And if you have your thoughts, should they be considered Super Bowl favorites.

Okay let's We're always down for that. Dairy slayton and sterling. Shepherd missed practice this game. I don't think anyone wants to talk about giants at saint. It's our last game that will be looking at today. Okay do we have real quick real quick. Do we have an update on the san francisco running backs against seattle elisa. These guys did on wednesday and thursday than they'll list you know on the active roster on on friday to play in the game You know that's one thing in terms of gibson. If in fact he does miss the game. Keep an eye on curtis samuel because his role could be Something that you want to monitor Bateman is is. I mean they're both stash candidates at this point but still i think My guess is using. They're going to be an off another week. Okay and samuel's forty five percent roster and this guy who was a top one hundred pick at one point. Think maybe you wanna take a shot on curtis samuel. "Winston keeping the saint starting quarterback job. Well of course this comes in the wake of the news. The sean payton his name james. Winston has starter which is like you know. There was no suspense to that Starting a week one and once it of course is coming off a season where he threw thirty picks. Nobody believes that. Sean payton is going to stand for that. Having had drew brees who took like four and a half season to amass thirty picks. I think he'll be the starter for reasonable at the time if people will call for his head when he has a bad game but i think he's the starter he's been in that system at least been able to practice and study it and walked through plays in it for over a year now frank. I think he's the starter for the foreseeable future. And that's all that crystal ball can tell you about. The nfl is foreseeable future. You're talking so much soccer on. I was convinced you were going to call them. Hamas and not jameis winston and. You're right about the thirty interceptions. But here's the thing. He's now with sean. Payton who's a very good coach. Good with quarterbacks and tastes him hill was his competition. Tastes hill is a good player. But for me he's a situational play for specialty downs. Absolutely so you know you have that in hill. So why would you mess with the give. Winston a chance here to succeed. I think spending a year with that system again. He's only twenty seven. he's a young player. I think lash you help. Remember came into the playoff game against tampa bay threw that touchdown pass. I think you give him a chance. He'll works maybe the first five six seven eight games. I think sean payton is onto something. I think james swinson all along was going to be the starting quarterback now whether or not he's the starting next season that's another story next season december. Who the hell knows that. Even that crystal ball but hill is a specialty. Try layer. Leave him in that role. He's comfortable with and his teammates. Those role opponents after prepare for it and they can't he does well in that role. Who is the next caller. I feel in frank high wilpon. I want to know if you see e. y. You joining the big twelve. Where you know. This comes in the wake. Frank of the athletic reporting that the big twelve is seriously interested. You know seriously discussing adding. Byu to the conference. I mean we're talking about now. Byu's byu. i don't know that. I have been waiting for better off a bigger offer. Maybe the pac twelve you know comes knocking on my door and the pac twelve is clearly still higher in the pecking order. Then the big twelve boise state is also in the mix. Yeah i think they could be added out west west west for real not to the big twelve. I don't the big twelve really. I don't know that. I want to join the big twelve. Even though frank it would mean more tv dollars jack or the currently independent. Byu i get that. But let's not make them sound like notre dame. Okay why you still need some support and they can find it and better elsewhere to me than the big to all right. The pac twelve is already said that they're not going to expand now. Maybe that's all negotiation. Byu and they have a great football tradition. There you mentioned your guy. Steve young also. Jim mcmahon they've had terrific players times. Were they've had a one loss season. Are they going to feed it and nobody takes him seriously as a team that could compete for national championship. The big twelve is going gonna change the hang on. Though if if they expand the playoff and they win the conference they would be one of those twelve team. So i think for them it makes sense and from a basketball standpoint. Why when you like it. You're going to get to play different deal. We know teams can split their alliances and allegiances now. Football and basketball don't have to be in the same unity. The playoffs getting expanded. It gives you a chance to get in there. Because who's to say if they don't go if they don't join a conference and if there's twelve teams they could get in. This would guarantee them away to get in if they win the conference. Well frank that is the biggest reason that they would go because we saw how much they cared about this last year. Yeah and once every thirty years or so. Byu pops up and they care about being included with the big boys in college football. All i'm saying to you is i'm not sure in their current state that the big twelve qualifies. How about a few y. You boise state at both of them to the big twelve. Okay then you got. I tell you what the pac twelve might wanna step convince you. I knew it the.

"I think it's role is more valuable in that regard than the would be If he were just the starting quarterback he'll was even saying himself to get ready for the competition that you know. He trained a lot differently in the off season then he would be normally in the off season when he was just a jack amongst traits. I mean here's a guy who had to work on the blocking had to work on his catching the work reading the work on that and the other he focus solely on quarterbacking this off season and i think as far as the team is concerned. I don't think that would be the right. Move wendell's role in sports. I'm your host window wallace so glad that you could be with us. Let me end with the situation in chicago. The quarterback situation between andy dalton and justin fields bears got blown out at home. This past saturday. Forty one hundred. Fifteen by the By the buffalo bills you know who's the Backup quarterback for the buffalo bills you betcha none other than mitchell trubisky who came back to soldier field and looked pretty good so when starters when the presumptive starter for now andy dalton was in the game. The bears started chanting. We want fields. We want field to when feels got into the game. He got a huge ovation. The first preseason game justin feel fields played fourteen hundred four twenty one hundred forty two yards. Look good so the chicago bears fan alike. It's hadn't had a halfway decent quarterback since sid lachmann before jim mcmahon came along for a couple of seasons. I mean they're yearning. they're burning. They're wanting to see a quarterback who can You know have some have the ability to be. A true franchise quarterback something so. They haven't had not. even vince. evans could fill the bill. So here comes justin fields and you matinee talking about eight. You know what i'm still gonna go with. Dalton are still going to go with their the dalton. I think on the thinking to myself as matt nagy making this decision because he's trying to a win respect or keep respect respecting the locker room or be might be thinking that his job might be in jeopardy so the person who give you the best chance to win right now is going to be andy dalton. I i don't. I don't know what a situation like. This is well as justin feels as play all of a sudden. You're going to go ahead and Start andy dalton for a few games and then when the team is two and three or two and five. You're gonna go ahead and make the move to justin fields. I say he looked in a situation like this. Get the kid out there. I'm not for practice..

"It would've beaten everything on television america last that. Except maybe the baseball game and i don't know how many viewers they had so they play. They have these entities scrimmages right and over the course of the next ten years. You're going to see more of these scrimmages and fewer preseason games. I'm here for it. I think it's undervalued like the summer league for twenty years. Nobody took care of the summer league. Nobody paid attention to it now. They put it on and it gets real ratings right like start putting the scrimmages on to adjust and field. So here's the story. Out of the scrimmage. Yesterday four quarterbacks took snaps in the bears. Miami dolphins game one got oozing odds according to the report. Losing us from the fan of ood who justin fields. That was the guy and this is where the niners are where the bears are garoppolo dalton all these snaps and experience they use ause guys and players our fans to and coaches love when players. They drop a play and the player runs all the way to the end and trae lance and justin field. You're not gonna do that. Sometimes they're just gonna wiggle around and make a play and the fans are gonna go. Ooh and the players are going to go. Oh and that's why just field is so exciting you gotta have buy in from players. This is what i said about mc jones you can be smart efficient and accurate now getting a lot of us off with mack jones or two. You're getting oozing odds with justin fields. And they need a playmaker. They got one top receiver allen robinson. Kids they have one young tied and coal combat. That i like a lot from notre dame. But he's young and he's he's still developing they have one running back. That is healthy. And that i really like. They need playmaker and the bears in. The buccaneers are very similar. The bears title eighty-five the bucks wanted in two thousand two. They've had hall of fame coaches hall of fame defenses all-time great. They've got a super bowl thirty years all that stuff. The box and the bears could never get the quarterback right and the bucks finally did and it's like oh my god best team in the league. The bears fans the bears organization. Can't like tampa get the quarterback right. They've had cool guys. Jim mcmahon tough guys. Jim mcmahon smart aloof guys. With big arms jay cutler big arm rex grossman. They've never had the guy. The arm the athleticism the maturity not trying to be too cool not trying to show off his arm just a winner. They've never had like just a win. Every bear quarterbacks got an issue mcmahon to indian cool and cutler's too aloof didn't get along with teammate than grossman was an arm and not much else. Good arm like justin field. Now they got a guy. Don't screw it up. Chicago's one of the great cities in america. One of the great sports towns in america. And i swear to god they the bucket nears and the bears of had everything about hall of famers coaches defense. Everything and they can't get the quarterback right. I don't know what's in the water the chicago. I don't know what it is on lake. shore drive. Maybe there's some salt coming in and they can't it doesn't i don't know. This is exciting. Four quarterbacks snaps one fans are freaking out and you know the players are because players fans to. I read a reporter. Who was at the scrimmage. I swear it should have been televised. Adam hoge says there is no doubt the best quarterback on either field. Today was justin fields not to tell you something chicago. Sports has had great hockey teams. They've won super bowls. The cubs did it. The white sox want one thing. They've never had the dude at quarterback a fifteen year up can move around big arm from winning high school program. Wedding college program. I think they've got it. I don't know. I haven't seen him enough but it's exciting. It's one of those things one of america's great sports cities l. a.'s had good quarterbacks. In new york's had good quarterbacks. Hell canada had warren moon candidates. At chicago's never figured it out. Looks like they have it. "What's going to happen here with lori marketing so some questions but again you get a twenty three year old is good as lonzo ball on a reasonable contract. That's a that's a good day for you. I love this as a recovery from what is really been a wayward few years since they traded jimmy butler. I was one of the few people that did not love the vuckovich. Do for them. At the time i liked it. Much better for orlando than i did for chicago. I still do. They gave up two picks one of which ended up being the number eight. Pick in this draft n wendell carter junior. Who is i think. Still twenty two years old in a meaningful player that they gave up. But i thought they recovered well yesterday. I think lonzo is a fantastic. Fit with zach levine. he does. He is not a traditional half court point guard and he does not have to be on this team. He can be the hybrid guard that he was in new orleans. And i think you nailed it in recap of this. I think him in levin and transition is going to be magic. The problem isn't nick. Vuckovich is is going to be a trailing those expensive margin and you just read it a lot of stuff to get him but even in the half court vuckovich is a double team magnet in the postseason. Really good postal player even though he never draws fouls lonzo is gonna get those kickout threes. He's just going to introduce some verb and unpredictability and into their offense and but the half court in the transition game and he's a good defensive player and is a good rebounder and all of that also applies to alex caruso. I liked the way those to kind of fit with the buzzer. Doing but to your point for a team. That's been bad for a while the bulls. Don't it's matters. That caruso in lonzo young. I think that's really important for the bulls. Because they went they went too far. Accelerating with vuckovich and now they've dialed back the age curve but for a team. That's been bad for this long. They don't have enough stuff. Like look at all the stuff the hawks have. And you look at sort of all the stuff. That didn't work out for the bulls marketing. Is he done there. If seems like we don't know we don't know that the market for him but they got levin markkanen done and affect effectively tank to get window. Carter junior in the jimmy butler trade market and might be gone. Done is gone into nonentity. Wendo carter junior is gone. You know doug mcdermott thing still lingers. They gave up to first round picks. Get doug mcdermott it. Didn't it didn't work out. There's just a lot of quiet trickling talent drain. That has made like kobe. White is way too important to this. Team's future pat. Williams absolutely has to hit for the bulls. Has it and i like pat williams. I do think he's gonna hit. I don't know what it looks like. I mean everyone wants to compare to leonard which just dial that back a little bit quieter. The two-time finals. Mvp dial the bat. Dial it back. But i think he's going to be a good player but there isn't a lot here. Considering how many shots they've taken it young players that said. I love the lonzo fit. I hate what new orleans did. I'm gonna talk about that with. Jim mcmahon later. And i liked the crucify. I think this is going to be an interesting next year and by the way. They can't be done because they are under. They cannot miss the play in next year. They cannot they unday should be under a lot of pressure to in fact that should be they should have higher education that even in a competitive east. But i think there's gonna be a fun team. And i like taking a shot on lonzo. Look he's got some flaws no the very minimal. Sorta half court game doesn't get to the rim doesn't get to the line finally shot while at the line you're not a very physical player doesn't take charges doesn't like to get in the fray of defensive physicality i like them and i like this fit like nine hundred million of the tax line to play with so how exactly they manage to use that as s- fluid i guess would be the issue you know. There's the potential of working the caruso sign and trade into the daniel thais signing in houston. You could work it into the i. Guess somehow we're going into a marketing sinan trade and all those would leave you with your your mid level exception still available to go add in the frontcourt or they may they just re-signed markkanen i. There's there's a few different ways they could do this. I just think they going to be fun next year. I could just a couple of other quick hitters. I'll let you go milwaukee depth issues after not reciting. Pj tucker to try to soften their tax payment Got bobby portis back. Good cleveland find jared allen extension people balked at. I think it's fine We need to people need to stop reporting that. They're trying to dump near they're not. They lovely inch junior charlotte. I'm gonna talk about what. Tim mcmahon thought. They've had a good a good week. Washington d. indiana lost. Doug mcdermott retain. Tj mcconnell got tory craig. They're still a very interesting team. Which i just think something has to give there eventually but nothing has really given there yet anything else. Kp before we journey away from the east. I let's circle back to atlanta real quick. I have liked what they've done. Dhillon right a really solid backup to trae young somebody who's a little bit stretched as starter we've seen in the past but if you can put him in that backup rohe's great. If i were boston i would have just traded tristan thompson for him and not not gotten josh. Richardson in chris. Done in that deal. I think That would have been a better scenario for them and then a very quiet value. Signing i think with gordon chang. It one year four million. He fills that role of they needed a backup center to to play that spot. Well the economy who recovering from shoulder surgery..

lonzo jimmy butler vuckovich Doug mcdermott bulls wendell carter zach levine Vuckovich alex caruso lonzo young levin markkanen Wendo carter caruso new orleans lori levin orlando pat williams Jim mcmahon nick

"It just It just knocked me on my rear end. Well, luckily for me, I'm a big water guy. Anyway, I try to drink up close to a gallon of water a day. Nice. So, um, I will be doing that. And hopefully my experience is not as bad as yours because I've definitely heard a lot of people say the same thing that you have, how it kind of knock them on their ass and then lay them out for a day or so. But I've also heard some people say, you know, it was fine. So you know, I'm hoping for at least somewhere in the middle, you know, And I've had people come up to me. Why would you take that shot? You don't know what they're putting in you. I said Look, I want to be able to walk in somewhere without a mask. Yeah. Listen, I've put worse things in my body. And you know, I'm not worried about this thing I was going to say the gallon of McCormick vodka that I drank outside of the dorm room when I was in college. Is a hell of a lot worse than whatever they just in check it exactly exactly can promise you that the gallons of E and J. Brandy that I drank throughout the years of college or the same night's special brews. I think those were a little bit worse than the medicine that our government has developer Pfizer has developed. I don't know what got us talking about this. Some of the bad quarterback matchups. Somehow we were talking about the Bears. And what happened against the Colts in the Super Bowl? I found an article that ranked the 52 quarterback matchups in the Super Bowl, and I want to go from back to front. The front ones. We all know. We know all the great ones Listen to some of these awful and this is going to be the worst. Literally. I'm not making this up, Kevin. The two were Super Bowl quarterback matchups. Both included the Bears. That seems about right number 52. It was Jim McMahon and Tony Eastern. Now, this was not Jim McMahon's problem. Tony East and stunk. Steve Grogan was the one that were He was the old quarterback for New England had the big, big neck roll that he was. But Jim McMahon was never considered. To be honest, He was never a superstar. Quarter a good quarterback. No doubt. Love Jimmy Mack. I had a chance. Start the Super Bowl when we were down in Houston. My buddy Dave Archer is actually really good Friends with Jim McMahon. We went over at their hotel and just hung out with them had dinner and drinks and listen to the two of them tell stories, and it was fascinating, but number 52 Jim McMahon, Tony Eason can considered the worst and a lot of it had to do with Tony East and going against That mayors famed 46 defense number 51 the one we were talking about Peyton Manning against Rex Grossman. Grossman in the game, had three turnovers, including a pick six that sealed it. You know how many games he started after that? Just eight? How do you go from the Super Bowl to only having eight more starts in your life, But that's where there were. It was wild because I remember that season very vividly, and he started off like a house of fire. I want to say the first you know, four or five games. He was fantastic and then Think a game against Arizona. He was just dreadful, never really recovered From there. It just became very much the defense carrying a team and William Devane restaurant special teams, of course to kind of carrying the load. But There was optimism for Rex early on because he started out hot. And then that balloon deflated quickly. Number 50 on worst quarterback matchups. Joe Theismann against David Woodley. Do you have any idea where David Woodley played NFL football? No, no, no, no, no. That would have been the 1982 Super Bowl between the Redskins and the Dolphins. Redskins win the game. 27 17 Dolphins should have won the game. Listen to this as far as a lie. Woodley completed a 76 yard touchdown pass to Jimmy Sefolosha, who's been doing TV in Miami for 35 years. In the first quarter, he completed just three passes the rest of the game. And did not complete a pass in the second half. Kind of hard to win a Super Bowl, even in 1982 not completing a second half past. So David Woodley, may he rest in peace. The next year, there was some guy named Dan Marino drafted. Think about that. You're the quarterback of the Super Bowl. You go to the Super Bowl, and they draft your replacement the very next year and let's just say David Woodley was no longer on. It was no longer a starter for the Dolphins. Much longer number 49. How about this for a terrible one? Terry Bradshaw. Really Good. Vince Farrago Mo. Vince Ferragamo. Who took over for an injured Pat Hayden 11 games into the year for the Los Angeles Rams back then, had him in the game at Pittsburgh won 31 to 19. Now. This one. You should remember. Terrible matchup Trent Dilfer and carry college. Oh, yeah. Oh, I mean, let's be honest, Trent Dilfer very easy to win a ring. When your defense is giving up like 2.5 0.6. He's probably the worst one to have to ever win a Super wide say right, at least in my I'm a little bit younger than you. But in my lifetime, certainly the worst ever win the Super Bowl either him or Brad Johnson, who won it for Tampa. They were both equally inept. And that was within just a few years of each other right? And both of them had like generational defense is Kerry Collins. By the way, it was absolutely terrible. I want to give you some of the other funny names. Are they rank Patrick Mahomes, Jimmy Garoppolo down there at 47th Jim Kelly against Jeff Hostetler, although it was one of the greatest Super Bowls ever. That's the one where the bills misses the game winner at the end. That was a year after we had gone to the Gulf War is really, really special Super Bowl in 91. Jeff Hostetler was a backup most of his career. John Elway. Chris Chandler. Alright, there you go. Falcons. Good job Having Chris Chandler is your starting quarterback That didn't work out very well. Steve Young against Stan Humphries, Chargers quarterback back in 1994 that was supposed to be Dan Marino and Steve Young. But the Dolphins blowing 19. Nothing lead. I believe against the San Diego Superchargers did not go well for Stan Humphries. They lost 49 to 26. This one was equal yucky Brad Johnson against Rich Gannon. Rich Gannon through, at least actually, I'm sorry. He threw three picks. Six is in the game three. And I think it was the MVP of the league that he was. He had a really good regular season. I remember. Yeah. Brad Johnson, a career backup who ended up going to the postseason winning there. Bob Bryan Bob greasy Billy Kilmer, 14 7. That one was terrible. Some of the old ones are really bad. Lynne Dawson against Joe Kapp. I've never even heard of Joe Kapp. No cap when I say I don't know who Joe Cap is. Tom Brady Nick Foles, which is a tremendous Super Bowl. Ended up being ranked 39th Tom Brady against Jared Goff. 40th see if I could find some other funny starts. How about Neil? Oh, Donald He threw a couple of pick sixes for the Pittsburgh Steelers. Back in the day, Jake the Lome was the starting quarterback for the Carolina Panthers. Yuck! And they almost won That game should have wanted They got obviously a late field goal from the guy who never misses late Field goals and Adam Venit Terry Mark ripping against Jim Cat Port Jim Kelly. Should have won a Super Bowl. People forget Doug Williams while it was a historic Super Bowl because he was the first black quarterback to start and then go on to win a Super Bowl. Uh, he was not a great quarterback. He was actually the lowest paid starting quarterback in the NFL showed up and showed up. Obviously, with the Redskins and the rest, shall we say is history. Ron Jaworski. Jim Plunkett, That was terrible. Jaws is a great analyst was not much of a great quarterback Joe Namath against Earl Moral..

Patrick Mahomes Terry Bradshaw Ron Jaworski Jim Plunkett Steve Grogan Jim McMahon Rich Gannon John Elway Steve Young Kerry Collins Vince Ferragamo Dan Marino Joe Kapp Dave Archer Chris Chandler Lynne Dawson Brad Johnson David Woodley Jeff Hostetler Doug Williams

"So that's gonna be trained Lance's best chance to start if you just put it all out on the table as far as which quarterback of the chance to play and replaced the starter because of who they're coming in behind. I think it's Justin feels that the better chance replacing Andy Dalton at some point If you go head to head with no injuries involved, Couple my first round winners. I like to the Bears pick of Justin Fields. They haven't have a franchise quarterback really like since Sid Luckman. I don't know if you want to count Jim McMahon, but it's been a long time. In Alabama was one of the big winners of the draft. Overall, 10 players drafted eight in the first two rounds. I think I know why they won the national championship. Anybody else Michael you had is a winner who deserves a shout out from the weekend. Hold on for a quick a nick sables calling right now he says, Hey, we appreciate Erin, uh, saying we had eight guys drafted in the first two rounds. Can we simply just get some love and say We have seven guys selected in the first round. Okay, Let's just worry about the first one that just got you know, Nick, I'd like to apologize. I'll make that stat make you look even better than it already does. You had seven guys taken in the first round. Although one of them the offensive lineman that went to the freighter's was probably a third round pick. They got taken in the first round of whatever you know that it played a turban that Nick Nick doesn't care. He doesn't care. You know what? I like to jet? I like What? I'm sorry. Not just the Jaguars. Obviously. Trevor Travel or into me. I get it. You get it? Why do you do that to jet fan? You jet fan thought they were going to get some love and then you immediately I don't like to think I don't like this. I don't like to Zach Wilson pick the Jets are in a position to go ahead and roll the dice on that again after Sam Donald and work out, So I like the Jaguar is going to two clips and players in the first round. Of course, it's Trevor Laurence. Destiny's After need anything. I could have made that pact, but Travis 80 and pick is interesting and it's interesting to me, you know that they've to a has now hooked up right with Waddle in the NFL and Burrow which you mar chase interesting the way those quarterbacks and receivers have connected now in the NFL Up Next, we go live to Green Bay Firm or on the Rogers situation. "21 interceptions in a QB rating of 84. Elway had 22 touchdowns and 23 picks Ken O'Brien of the Jets that year. Had 25 touchdowns and eight interceptions. Ken O'Brien, Joe Montana. Hey, Joe, What do you doing with avocados Today? He was almost station today by the Joe Montana threw for 3653 yards that year with 27 touchdowns and 13 interceptions, the great Dan found, said 27 touchdowns and 20 interceptions. We people say, Well, I mean Manuel food, they don't make them like him anymore. What Jimmy Mac that year had a quarterback rating of 82.6. Which let me see in that year for all of the guys that were Like Ken O'Brien, I think statistically had the best year of anybody that year. It's just crazy. How they remember to away games daily. The quarterback rating also is a lot of ways. It's tied to completion percentage, right. I mean, they weren't throwing wide receiver screens they weren't thrown as many hitches. The rules on how you can cover a wide receiver were completely deaf Review completed 60% like Remember Joe Montana in the 40. Niners played that West Coast offense where that little swing pass was That was the first time you ever heard anybody say Well, our passing game is an extension of our running game because we get the ball in the hands of our receivers in her back really quickly. Joe Montana that your completed 61% of his passes. So I mean, it's just It was your right. I mean, it was a different era. It was a different era. But statistically, yeah, you're I mean, you're right. Jim McMahon was never leading the league in any statistical category. I guess you could tell me more this than I could tell you because Was too shocked to hear the gym. McMahon's Hi touchdown here was 15. Yes. You just told me Ken O'Brien and that same year had 27. Yeah, No, I am. I am surprised. But I think Jim Jim fit that team. I mean, that's that's kind of that's who they were. That was their DNA's. That was there. You know, they were just a different It was a different style. Um, you know, I like I said you you would know better than I didn't even get here until 89 played with Jim and one training camp and I was I was Absolutely totally impressed with the guys football like you. Yeah, despite despite his his body haven't taken a ton of abuse, and he physically wasn't at his peak in that time. Paul was always on time and camp. I mean, he knew where it was supposed to go. I was really impressed with him. I think his body had betrayed him at that point. When then we traded him. I think to San Diego. Um, yes. Yeah. I don't think anyone will ever look back and say Jim was one of the all time greats in the history of the league. Well, people bring that up about. Hey, will you had Jim McMahon? That's what people a lot of people bring up, and that's why I always say. Google his numbers, you'll be shocked. I wanted so Everyone has always said about the quarterbacks, and that's why we're talking about Nick. Man we're talking about racks were talking about Tre Biscuit. We've talked about Cutler these air, the greats of the modern era for the Bears. We've never had a truly truly great one. So let's play the There's rumor of the day, okay? What's it? Newton Garoppolo Menchu cousins Glennon. It's time for the QB. Rumor off the day, you know, mija love it. This is from that Maggie from a Mike Silver article on NFL that club dot com. Talking about All the quarterbacks moving around, had tipped to believe her nation. One person watching closely is Chicago Bears coach meant Nagy, whose team is actively seeking a replacement for Mitchell. Travis Key, the number two overall pick. In the 2017 draft quote. With all these quarterbacks out there and all those young guys who will be in this draft. It's gonna be a fascinating off season as far as the quarterback position, Nagy said. And once one goes, it's going to be like a domino effect. So was that one Matt Stafford or is that one to Shawn Watson? And another name to bring this to moved. Off. And you ever remember. They know we're swamped for one another. But there's been two names that have been moved in Stafford, right. I'm just reading you his quotes. No, I know I'm not like I'm there's really nothing there. And the thing that the rumor the chatter today is Carson Wentz could very, very Likely be traded is the way Adam Schefter said it. He was on a Philly sports radio station yesterday. Does he interest you and Woody interest met Maggie considering Doug Peterson, who is close with Matt Nagy was the guy who wanted Jalen hurts. I told you this yesterday. That's not the route I would go. I'm not convinced that a quarterback that needs to be fixed that the people here can fix him. Wanted. I want a quarterback. This isn't need to be fixed. I don't think that you have the capacity. The time the patients the proclivity, whatever the word is that you want to use that don't believe that their best Option is to rehabilitate a talented quarterback who has gone south made. The other side of that is a quarterback who may not be have to be fixed could just be a little above average. And you could be paying a very, very high cost for him. That's true, But you're still gonna have you're not gonna have to pay much, probably in terms of trade compensation or less. Probably for Carson wants, but you are gonna have to absorb that contract. And Like dare cars playing better than In Carson Wentz right now, Right, So, yeah. Mean again. I think he can be. I think there's talent in there. I think he can be fixed. Think even you don't even have to go back to that season where he got hurt. The artist stats from the 2019 season and I can't profess toe to tell you that I've I've watched every eagles game from two in 2019, but I think his his performance in 2019 wasn't Bad. So like it's a newer phenomenon him not being able to play his position. Yeah, I mean, he still wasn't ever a zoo. Good is the year that he did get hurt. There were still still things that he did that would drive you crazy. I'm looking up his stats right now. Then we were. Why don't In the meantime, When I get some callers, I need 10 callers. Let's go every inch every five. We're gonna play a game based on the Super Bowl 3123323776 in increments of five all the way up to 50. Carson wins here. I've got 27 touchdown, seven interceptions in 2019 quarterback rating of 93 threw for 4000 yards completed 64% of his passes. That's what I mean. Like 2019 wasn't horrible. So maybe you don't think you fix him as badly as you think. Well, that may be true, but I think he still needs to be fixed a little. All right. Andrew Luck's Retirement Highlights the NFL's Growing Problem

"Know what it wasn't long ago. I think it was last week when two weeks ago when mclovin said hey how about this poll question is andrew lock more likely to be an slight disappointment or hall of famer and this is when the ankle injury came. I remember it was the calf and then the owner robert say said i think it's an ankle and then i started to think there's more involved in this. There's more to this story. Sorry ben just glynn from the calf to a high ankle. I don't even i still don't know what he has but we know it serious enough that he announced his retirement and everybody's got an opinion on this. His decision to retire was a shock to the system for you know the the entire n._f._l. Nation when people say boy oy this is the most shocking football story we've ever heard i mean like new. No no no no how about we start with o._j. Simpson michael vick aaron hernandez. Those are shocking stories. Andrew looks different cat all right he is. He went back to college to get his degree. He could have left after his junior year. He went back to get his degree in architectural design. I believe he there are guys who are or football players and then there guys who play football most our football players j._j. Watt is a football player. Should he still be playing football. No no not at all but it andrew luck is a guy who is a guy who was good at playing football. I don't know if he's a a football guy and there's a difference in that but that doesn't mean he wasn't good at it or didn't love it. I just think that we're we're so unfamiliar. Oh you're with an athlete who uses logic where you go. What are you doing. Most football players in pauley had the analogy. Let's say you have a rock rock in your shoe. Most football players will continue to play in fact. Stop down on the rock. Where is andrew luck goes. How about. I just take the rock in my shoe. I mean it sounds logical. He just took the rock out of a shoe. Football players will tie the shoe differently like they'll somehow find a way. Hey i'll walk differently who care i'll take madison. Shoot me up. Whatever andrew lucked just said. I'm gonna take the the pebble <music> out. He's removing football from his life. Everybody has an opinion on this and when he started rattle off the list of injuries it makes a lot of sense but it's hard for us to imagine and by the way athletes are just commodities. We've moved on from all of these athletes. We don't care really don't care eric. Dickerson joined us in los angeles when we were out there and here's one of the great running backs of all time any looked great. I said the kind you look like you could give me a couple of carries. He said people don't realize the toll that this takes on goes. I slept in a reclining chair for two years because i had neck and back injuries. Nobody cares about eric dickerson's injuries. Nobody cared about jim. Mcmahon's injury his health. He thought about killing himself. We move on and andrew luck realizes that and yes he got paid paid and the reason for people to be upset and how do you do this to your team. And how do you quit on your team. I understand those emotions. I really do but i have to look at this and say andrew. Luck did what andrew luck thought he needed to do. Is it inexcusable to you know oh colts fans. Yeah i get that. I don't think he's saying boy. Watch what i'm gonna do. I'm going to set up the colts for failure now. I don't think i think that he had to process this. It took a long time. It's something you do you do well. It's your identity and maybe he doesn't want that is his identity and can you get away from this. You know the guys who had all the surgeries. I'm seeing all of this stuff here. Everybody's saying how do you do. I understand all of those emotions. Russians here but andrew lock did what andrew lucked thought he needed to do. If barry sanders was a quarterback and he walked away we would have abba bigger issue with what barry sanders did at age thirty-one calvin johnson at aged thirty. Jim brown age thirty. What are you doing walking away from the sport. Guess you've got a contract extension. There are a lot of questions. I have ranted you luck in this situation. When did you really know and when did you let the cold snow and what is the reason. Is there more surgery down. The road like you went through shoulder. You had and i put some of this on the colts by the way ryan grigson in particular the former g._m. What did i say for years. You have this investment. It's like having this unbelievable engine but then you have a car that's falling apart. You traded for trent richardson. You didn't use any lyman you finally went out and got quinton nelson and what happened. Andrew luck had the best season of his career. He had the fewest sacks. It's not something that takes a whole lot of thought. Hey how about we have a good offensive line. Chances are andrew. Luck might be able to play play a little bit longer but so many injuries and then you start to get down on yourself and you get in your head and you don't wanna go through it and and i look i couldn't play the game. I've told you if you ever watched a game on the sidelines. You never let your kids play. It is violent. It's more violent than you think because when you hear it you can close your eyes on the sidelines just listen. There's no way you go yep. I want to play play. I know we're macho. I know we all wanna play through pain. I did stupid things with my knee and my shoulder waited thirty five the years to get my torn rotator and i'm not even a pro athlete. I have an artificial knee because i was stupid when i played this guys out there and they're taking shots at him. He's getting hit lacerated kidney. He's got shoulder. He's got yeah. I understand all of these injuries. Do we want him out there. Yes because it's about us he. What are you doing to my fantasy team. Hey what you doing to my colds. You're you guys got a chance to. I understand hold loose things but this is something that we don't understand an athlete who says i'm gonna take a logical approach. He's a guy he's got a flip phone. He's got a book club. I mean he he's not your normal guy. Hi and we can't understand this. He's newly married. We can't understand this because all of us would go. I killed a play and make that kind of money and be a starting starting quite yes. This story is about us in how we perceive. This people didn't play wanna tell you they would play or how oh you need to play or. What's wrong with your your soft. You gotta take a step back and andrew luck. Doing i see all of this twitter chatter. Oh this is going to stay with him forever. I is very sanders. A quitter calvin johnson a quitter. Is jim brown a quitter right i. I haven't heard that i'd never heard somebody say. Jim brown's a quitter. Barry sanders quit walked down on the <hes> the lines how can you do. I guess andrew luck is a quitter but i'm guessing will move past this calvin johnson. Is he a quitter or see smart. I don't know i just i saw this reaction this vitriol that andrew luck how dare you do for this. He walked away from his team. I get i get it. He gave up on a sport. He excels at but no matter what people say. I think we can all agree. Andrew luck was outstanding when he did play and wishing luck and no pun intended with his life after football.
