"Isn't it oh okay. So and then it just automatically flips to k. When that person leaves next letter okay. When's your favorite number spot. Ooh okay this guy being like a maximum number what do you mean be like three million seven hundred and nine hundred thousand five favorite one hundred but everyone wants to park in the sixty nine because it's a ha- sixty nine just like the letter spa. They skipped they skip sixty nine and thirteen rabbit though tina Yeah don't skip eleven. no well they did. They skipped eleven. So what are you doing with three million plus like okay whatever. Your favorite number is number. Now you think about these things now. Somebody goes up to infinity royce points. It's going to be an empty spot a lot. If the numbers two million six hundred seventy five thousand that's right but what you technically just drive to that spot part there and claim it's your favorite number playing the game cheating too long always cheating. Yeah so you have to establish your favorite number advanced. Where do we do this. Cow o i c. I just good idea roy. Decal color spot. Yeah maybe they should just be a stugatz spot and it changes every every single day so he has to drive around and find it fun. No i don't want to have to drive around and find my spot on my own spot. What if it's the stugatz spot in the same spot but there's someone there and he asks you a question. If you tell the truth you get to park there. I bet if you get a better spot. Ooh what if you lie. You don't know if you get the better spot or the worst spot. So it's like a little catch twenty two. Every time i love a good catch. Twenty two but in cash donlevatar stugatz. If you give him the choice to got you can have the very same thing. One of two ways you could get it honestly or you could steal it. He'll always choose stealing it. Stugotz saul it's quicker path. I mean it's just. Bcc lebatardshow with stu guys so the news broke yesterday. Jim mcbride of the boston globe broke the news yesterday. That set twitter on fire cam newton released by the new england patriots. Mack jones going to be the starter for a bill. Belichick and the patriots. This season and jim with us right now. Jim how surprised were you when you learned to the news that the patriots not trading him not using them as a backup just straight releasing cam. Newton pretty surprised that as most of the people that follow this story up in boston. Were you know cam had had taken the first team reps. In in every practice that he was available for Started all three. Preseason games and really all sides pointed to him being the starter again. This year It was it was a close competition. And mac certainly outplayed camden during camp. But it didn't seem like at the time that would be enough to camp off the top of the desk job. So i think a lot of people were were really surprised by this decision I'm not surprised that it was released rather than a demotion campaign set at the end of last year that He didn't see himself as a backup in this league but really that's that's kind of what he is at this point. Why was he released though. Is that bowel joke. Doing them a favor. Probably you know. Maybe so he could. He could hook on with another team. But i i think it was a combination of things. You know the the fact that that mac emerged this summer Can't really you know played poorly against the giants on sunday night and the fact that he was unvaccinated certainly had to play a role in it. Because you know. He served a five-game Or a five day out of a banishment from the from the premises because of violating probate court of protocols and his unvaccinated status certainly left him vulnerable to to have that happen again. And you know if you're if you're getting ready for an opponent and you're getting everything planned around cam and then he's not available at the last minute that that's a tough so those because you're right what you said cam. Newton was with the number ones every practice he attended. He started for the two preseason games that he was available for. But how important do you think those five days or against three practices without cam where mack jones was taking all the snaps with the number ones was able to show leadership off in practice a way that he had it been able to do before. How important do you think that was in in belgium decision. Yeah i think it was important. you know back headed a practice last wednesday the first of two against the giants at joint practice where he absolutely shredded the giants defense for two hours. It was He he looked like a season veteran and he was playing. It was his first time really this year playing behind the top offensive line and playing with the with the projected stout is at the skill positions and he played against the giants first team and he was really the best quarterback on the field So i think that that probably opened a few more is especially around the staff. It was i really Max first time without cambian over his shoulder and he really you know he really excelled so. I think that that probably opened a few is probably game to the staff confidence that this kid can handle the job. Do you know if they tried to train them. I don't know my sources You know haven't improved for that. But i i would. I would think that they probably just released them You know they might have went to cam scenario. I envision going to candidate saying look. We're going to you know we're going cameras with the star and camp probably will release me so i can go make a deal somewhere else. I i don't think they just you know blindsided him jim. I'm surprised that ballot check whose job it is to win. He's done a fantastic job of doing it. Better than any coach in the history of the nfl. I am surprised. Just based on his reputation that he'd be willing to release in cove year with a pandemic swirling around us a rookie quarterback. You have no idea if he's good. Maybe he gets injured. I'd be. I'm surprised he straight released him and didn't use cam as his backup quarterback. Yeah i'm not surprised by that because cam had mentioned at the end of last season when when you know be long before. He resigned with the patriots. He was asked if he would be willing to come back as a backup and he said he thought he didn't think he..

"We haven't talked about it today. But this defense has a chance to be elite. The front seven has been very active. you know a lot of a lot of veteran guys who kyle dandora dante high came back to share in mass jude on the threes and signing from the ravens has been. He's been a beast this whole summer. He the guy can rush the passer he can. He can set the edge and he's even dropped into coverage so You know very rejuvenated front seven. I think the big is if they get stuff deal. More back you know they. They invested a lot of money in defense. But he's the best player so They need a healthy steph gilmore. What is his status coming up for the for the start of the season. Yeah he's on pop We see him working out every day on the rehab field. a patriot's practices. But i still think he's you know he's pretty unhappy with his contract. He's he's do about seven million base this year. Eight million if he hits close to eight million hits all incentives but He's looking for more money You know invest mandatory minicamp. Which doesn't happen. Very often in new england And that that was clearly a a signal that he wasn't happy. So i think something gets gets worked out before the start of the season. There's still patriots still have You know i think around twelve million and cap space. Oh they can certainly come up with something to make him happy and you know make themselves happy i. It will be a win. Win back Jim one with the patriots are being projected to win nine games. They win ten games and can they win the division. Yes and yes. I think they can win. You know. I think they're gonna win ten to eleven games because that is going to keep them in every single game And and they're gonna play ball. Control offense that will keep most games close. 'cause they're going to down that clock So i think they can win that game. I think they can you know they can challenge the division. The bills are awful tough. you know. They've got a good defense and josh allen. Is you know coming off. An mvp. Pierre and My all the reports. I read out of buffalo. He's having another upstanding summer. "His since late in his rookie year talking patriots with jim mcbride here on pushing the odds so these the game on thursday eagles patriots. Two teams are practicing up against each other. There's been some bad blood here. Comments calling cam. Newton the check down king and whatnot. What are you expecting out of the game tomorrow night. Yeah i think the projected starters they're gonna play a lot more than they normally would The page patriots preseason games especially coming off join practices. They a couple of years ago when they they practiced in detroit. Nashville and stout is most of the snaps in those practices and then when gametime came The backups plate. They they didn't really you know They didn't really use the stars at all. I think with only three preseason games. You're going to see a little bit of a different philosophy this year where You know the starters have to play a little bit longer in the second. Preseason game Because you don't wanna play a bunch of guys next week. I guess the giants because that's still that last game and you wanna take a chance to get people hurt. So i think this game is going to be more like the. You know the so-called dress rehearsal they used to be in the third game In the preseason. So that would be one thing that i would. I would see happening in They only practice for an hour and twenty minutes today which is a very short patriots practice. i'm not sure well how how long the eagles usually go about patriots usually go Two hours minimum and usually a little bit over two hours so So totally practice one hour and twenty minutes and then with a day off tomorrow maybe a light walk through on figuring. The starters are projected stivers. They're gonna get Some pretty heavy run on thursday night. So then was that. Make for cam and mack. Well how do you expect cam. Newton to play for a half i do. I can't place the first half. Mac place the second half and you know bryant heuer's probably in the bullpen for for the giants game profile most of the giants game. Maybe maybe those guys get a series each but Yeah i think it's going to be split pretty even between Mac and then from a deep perspective. Same things starters. Play the first half on defense. I think so and this defense you know. We haven't talked about it today but this defense has a chance to be elite The front seven has been very active. you know a lot of a lot of veteran guys. Kyle van noy dante. Hightower came back to share mass on the free agent signing from the ravens has been. He's been a beast this whole summer. He the guy can rush the passer he can. He can set the edge and he's even dropped into coverage so You know very rejuvenated front seven. I think the big tease if they get stuff deal. More back You know they invested a lot of money in this defense. But he's the best player so They need a healthy steph gilmore. How what is his status coming up for the for the start of the season. Yeah he's on top We see him working out every day on the rehab field at the patriots practices. But you know. I still think he's you know he's pretty unhappy with his contract. He's he's do about seven million base this year. Eight million if he hits close to eight million hits all incentives but He's looking for more money You know he missed mandatory minicamp. Which doesn't happen. Very often in new england And that that was clearly a signal that he wasn't happy. So i think something gets gets worked out before the start of the season. They're still patriots. Still have You know. I think around twelve million and cap space so they can certainly come up with something to to make him happy. And you know Make themselves happy. I it will be a win win. Step back jim with this. The patriots are being predicted to win. Nine games can they win ten games and can they win the division. Yes and yes. I think they can win. You know. I think they're gonna win. Ten eleven games Because that defense is going to keep them in every single game And they're gonna play ball control offense that will keep most games close. 'cause they're going to down that clock So i think they can win that games. I think they can you know they can challenge for the division. The bills are awful tough. You know they've got a good defensive. And josh allen is coming off an mvp type pierre and By all the reports i read out of buffalo. He's having another upstanding summer. So you know it's gonna be tough that the the dolphins are going to be tough this year too But i think the patriots are going to be right there and especially with that defense. I i really like the way these guys are coming together. It's going to be a really fun season. Jim thank you for the time. Really appreciate you coming on today. "Parole football is hitting the open guy. So whoever's open give him the ball and there's sometimes today threw the ball when i shouldn't have but we wanted to push the ball on the field and it's all about taking the shots at the right time and these guys are open on a lot of the place So like i said it's football and the quarterback job is to hit them when they get open and they've been doing a good job of that and we've had really good time on our protection too so it is time for thirty two teams and thirty two shows patriots time. Jim mcbride covers the patriots of the boston globe. That was mack jones talking about his play in the nfl. Let's talk about that with jim. Mcbride here on the augusta line. Jim after all to- aria good matt. How are you i wonderful. Let's start right there with the mac jones versus cam newton conversation. It feels like the media and the fans are having a lot more fun with this talk in the patriots are if you had to pick right now game one who is playing quarterback for the patriots to start the year. It cam newton. Yeah it's You know he's bill has maintained all along the cameras daughter and I haven't seen that much of a significant separation between him and mac in In practices or So far so i would say that the you know. That's offense is kind of geared towards campus is a small offense now with a good stable running backs in a really strong offensive line. And you know that that plays the cam strength. Because he's a you know because he's a guy that can run as well so You know. I think one day you know mac does is going to be the quarterback on new england patriots right now simultaneously. Getting cam ready For the now and getting ready for the future. I'm curious to see what happens when the patriots open up the year and they're playing style of football that well let me put it this way. Do you think the patriots. If mack jones is forced to play do they have the personnel. To run the type of offense that you would need to have out there to help mac joan. Do they have the receiving core. They could get it done if mack jones was forced to play cam injury. Yeah i think they do this year. They've struggled with with finding you know. Quality fast catchers the last couple of years but you know they they signed a couple of free agents and nelson galore and kendrick born and they've really had strong summers They signed two of the best tight ends in the league and john smith and hunter henry and both those guys are down right now with minor injuries but not expected to to be very long so You know. I think the weapons are there. They you know they they. They're they're gonna use a lot of twelve personnel sets like they've done in the past with patriot tight ends and You know so. I think that that matt could easily adjust them. They could easily game plan for for him. you know josh has always done a A really good judge is. Mcdonald's always really good job of catering the needs of his quarterback. And whether that. Was tom brady or jacoby. Percent or jimmy garoppolo He knows how to get guys. Ready as a writer and a guy looking for quotes. How how have you seen. Or how do you perceive the way that cam. Newton is with you guys every day. It feels like he's handling as well as he possibly could. Yeah he really has since he got here last july You know he. He actually won the media. Good guy award last year in new england because he was so cooperative and you know he was You know i know. He had a reputation in carolina was maybe sometimes difficult to deal with. But he's been he's been really good with us very honest. Very candid You know th this year. We've actually got to speak to him in person where we didn't at all last year with all due calls So he's got a personality and he. I think he likes it. He's not he's not a guy that needs to be coached with the media. He's he's pretty naturally says what's what's You know he says what's on his mind. Where as a lot of guys in the nfl will will. Will you know kinda split. The company line all the time cameras the cameras and unique individual and a really fun quote I just wish he talked more than once a week. Yeah i liked what he said yesterday to you guys what he was basically saying like you know as much as i know like what what do you mean like you know have been told on the starter or not like it feels like he is very comfortable with this conversation in being honest with you guys about where he currently is in his career and if at some point this season loses his job do you think he will want out or do you think he'd be comfortable being a backup. Yeah he said at the end of last year when we were asking him about the possibility of coming back to new england that you know what if the patriots drafted a guy in the first round. And you're kind of a mentor. He he said. I don't wanna come back and be a backup now. That was last year now. Maybe he's still feels he can be a styler So he might have a different change. You might have a different attitude this year where he says you know. Look i you know i can. I can accept the fact that that they're grooming this kid and i'll play the i'll play the good soldier role for year but i think he deep down in his heart. He thinks he's still daughter in this league and that he can be effective. And you know. I think so too. They want Seven games with him last year when he wasn't completely healthy and didn't really have a great expanse of knowledge of the offense. So i think you're gonna see a more improved cam this year. I've seen What's more fluidity in his in his throwing motion. Where last year he was kind of. You know hall thing. I think he was still kind of getting over that. Joe older injury from two years ago. more zip on his vol this year. I think the only place where we're cam hasn't shown a tremendous amount improvement This year is decision making and quickness But that's that's gonna come. How much copay. Nineteen impact him through your eyes. How different did he look after the sickness. yeah. I think it definitely affected You know i think back to the the buffalo game where. He fumbled late A couple of other games where he just missed off and he. He admitted that there was a little bit of a fog there and it took him a little while to get over. It was nothing you know Debilitating to the point where he couldn't function but he definitely said his mind was slower and he was foggy at times. So i think it had a big influence you know. I don't think he's one of these long haulers but i think it was You know he only missed a week. and and maybe he could have taken a little more time off I think he was really from his decision. Making wasn't good. After covert regards of the health issues. I felt like his decisions. Just weren't there and he's making decisions in terms of the offense this season in who could have a major role i mean. Do you think how many women i says. How many running backs do you think the patriots carry this year. But they've got. This has got some decision makes to to make in that room because they they have a lot of talented guys. They have james white. Have sony. Michelle damian harris is probably going to be the sadder. They drafted romande stevenson. And the kid. Jj taylor was an undrafted created last year. Who keeps showing up a making place. So it's a very deep room. I wouldn't be surprised if one of those guys gets traded Before the start of the season Maybe like sony michelle's in the last year of his contract. They didn't pick up his history year option he's a guy that might bring back some value To position where the the patriots are our weekend and another team these running back. So you know i probably i think they keep five But they've also got another running background in boulder. It was very valuable special teams guy in locker room guy that at this coaching staff and teammates loved so It's it's pretty deep. So i think it's a trade is going to have to be made at some point or or surprising released. How big of a year could damian harris have huge. I mean he's going to be running behind a really good offensive line He's got tight ends. That can that can block. Now and hunter henry and john smith You know he's he's been here for a little bit by injuries but we saw flashes of a really strong running back. Last year. Damian harris he hits the whole exceptionally hard I think that's one area. Where he's you know. He's markedly better than sony 'cause he he gets to the whole and he gets to the second level and sony's been having trouble doing that really since.

"Cam Newton signing a one year deal with the New England Patriots. Big news as we hear from definitely PC's Drew Mohammed suggested that there wasn't enough of that last year touchdowns, but Cam Newton gets a one year deal. The Globe's Jim McBride broke the story this morning. Well, just heard from a source that you know this was happening. It was kind of pointing in that direction the last couple of days but could confirm this morning and as far as whether Newton will be the guy next year, you have to ask whether the path They're done shopping. No, I don't think so. I think this is just the the start of it. We'll see how it all plays out. But Cam Newton coming back. The Patriots making moves Drew Mohammed WBZ, Boston's

"Ordering curbside. We've been running books out to people's car, and now we're letting A few people into the story to time way. Take everybody's temperature. Everybody wears mass can sanitizer and people have been really kind and compliance. Supportive. It's it's been a very heart warming Christmas time. All right, So let's look at some of the most important our favorite books of the year. And you both. Nicely packaged our first round in a package of three Janet Why don't you start all of your books? You told me Have the word rise in it. Tell us about them. The three books that we have that have the word rise. Our first biography it's called The Dead are arising by less pain, who was a very well known journalist and his daughter camera pain. The book was worked on over a 30 year period, and it's about the life and times. Of Malcolm X. And so this new biography on him for that was worked on for 30 years. I think it's very important that did are rising. The next one is a political commentary by Reverend Al Sharpton called Rise up, and this book is a book of choice making. He says that readers I led to understand that we are in a crossroads in our political development, you know, sort of like our social development or emotional development. Well, we're in that as a country and a Political development where we must choose Live out the meaning of the title rise up on the third one is a cookbook, and it's a historical and contemporary history. It's called the Rise by chef Marcus Samuelsson, who I know has been on Your show, Jeffrey and he was so good. I loved hearing him. The book is beautiful. And insightful and it's one that we highly recommend for people. So those are my three books of rise that have rise in the title, which seems to be the message that we have to rise up and change the way we live and think. All right, so and Janet went with non fiction. I think your first three year all novels. So what have you What do you have? Yeah, I'm always for fiction. Deacon, King Kong By Jim McBride. Jim McBride is Very much in the news recently because he's had a television show about his last novel. The Good Lord Bird, which won the National Book Award was terrific. This is a book that is set in Brooklyn in 1969, a character named Sport Coat who is a bad alcoholic, shoots a drug dealer in the projects where he lives and has no memory of it. Sport coat has both the worst luck and the best luck of any character of about ever seen in literature. And this story follows what happens when everyone's trying to catch up with him. The next book. One of my very, very favorite books of the year. Transcendent Kingdom by Jesse and it is the story of the wonderfully named character Gift E, who is 1/6 year doctoral student at Stanford in neuroscience, and she's studying the science of addiction and depression. And it is about the intersection of evangelical faith and science and how she's trying to solve the problems of her own life and my very, very favorite book of the year by my very favorite writer, Louise Air drinks the Night watchman set in 1959. This is the story that's loosely based on Louise's own grandfather and how he tries Just save the edge of Wei Nation by making sure that a termination contract on Native American treaties doesn't go through the U. S government. This is such a hopeful book and really all three of these novels. Are about one person making a difference in the world and changing the outcome of fate For a lot of people. There was a book that I know you both loved out, Janet, you can start on this. It's called Black Bottom Stains historical novel by Alice Randall can it was about it. By what I'm saying is a novel. And I think it's a very important subject because it's a historical novel based on real life characters and people who lived and worked and walked through a section of Detroit, which was called Black bottom Black by them was very important neighborhood in Detroit prior to the expressways that it has been raised by the expressways coming to Detroit, the unit Interstate Express Ways so that Uh, neighborhood no longer exists. And catcher. You had a few books for young people or for for the child in all of us? Yes, Yes, We always need something for our kids Are right. Silver Arrow, By Lev Grossman. Fourth grade and up girl named Kate asks her rich uncle who she's never met. For a birthday present. He sends her a train. She and her little brother Tom, go off on the train have such adventures and it again is all about problem solving and creativity. Really a wonderful book. Everything Katie Carmelo writes. I love this is the fifth novel in the Decker would drive. Syriza's Stella and a cot and the anything is possible poem grades one through three. You have to write a poem for school. Stella writes it about her neighbors. Pig mercy, Watson and Janet. I think we have time for one more. You got one more pick for us. Well, yes, I have. Five actually, but I'll pick 11 that has gotten a lot of attention is called braiding Sweetgrass. Robin. Well, Kemer, this book brain sweetgrass has, I believe changed the lives of a lot of people Because we've had people come in the store to say I read this book. I've given her away and I want to buy more and give him away. So this is braiding sweetgrass. Joanna Webster Jones of Source. Booksellers in Detroit and patches of Parnassus books in Nashville. "It's kind of funny. We were talking about the identity of the New England Patriots. And when we Had Jim McBride, The Boston Globe on the show Going back to they play Monday night. My days all blend together. No, they played Sunday night with Sunday night and it was in the beautiful weather there Gillette Stadium. So we had just talked about the identity of the Patriots in these last two weeks, really coming forward and seeing the way that Josh McDaniels and Bill Belichick and the other coaches have kind of tailored the Patriots in 2022 their personnel, which is what good coaches do. I mean, if you want to continue to stuff a round peg into a square hole. Or is it a square peg into a square peg into a round hole, isn't it? Yeah, me and my cliches. If you want to attempt to bang your head against thesafeside of your shed, or if you wanna be a squirrel and hide in my shed, you certainly can do that. It's an exercise in futility. However, the best coaches figure out a way to use their personnel and put their personnel in the best situations to get them to succeed and to obviously come up with wins. But then, on the heels of that conversation with Jim McBride, the discussion about the Patriots identity, I heard a reporter asked Mike Tomlin about the Steelers identity. And once again, his answer is classic. Tomlin. Hopefully, identity is winning way need to be the verse and versatile enough to be what we need to be just about in any circumstance. We need to have enough depth to meet the challenges of attrition that's associating in this game. We gotta have enough talent across the ride variety of areas to play a certain style of play. Why does it always sound more flowery and commanding an interesting when Mike Tomlin says it then when anyone else has it? Producer Dave and I. We are in agreement. If Mike Tomlin speaking, we generally are listening because it's just it's better when he says it. This is the NFL. He is fantastic. It's like you talk about you know broadcasters and you listen to them. In a cookbook or a telephone book. I would listen to my Tomlin read anything so seriously. That's a good point. Hey, wasn't obviously one of my answer is because he's not an NFL broadcaster. But yes, Mike Tomlin. I don't know if his I don't know if his side addresses his meetings with his teams are like this, but I can imagine they are. He's not faking it for the media. I mean, I I would love to sit in on one of his team meetings. Although I suspect there'll be other flowery language in there, as was evidenced by Antonio Brown doing the Facebook live. I will never forget that from around the side of the lockers and catching Mike Tomlin swearing about the Patriots. That was so good, so good. Yeah, There's probably a few choice words in there, but he's He's just fantastic. And then there's this. Hopefully, identity is winning dog I went to get No. I love that. How many other coaches have said that in response to a question about your team? Identity? Yeah, man, you're not, You know, for the first time in franchise history, and the future is bright, so bright that you need some sunglasses. So I'm with Mike Tomlin. We don't need any other identity than winning. But then he goes. I want to talk about their depth as well as their talent and being diverse and having the versatility to win in a variety of situations. So all those peeps that even as recently as last year were calling for Mike Thomas to be fired you my friends are completely delusional. And I say that with all the love and affection I can muster. It's after hours with Amy Lawrence on CBS Sports Radio. If you're wondering about the Nick Foles situation, we do have an injury update, thankfully, not nearly as serious as what it was originally thought to be. The Bears are thankful now. He was supposed to have more tests on Tuesday, but the initial diagnosis is that it's just Hip pointer, and it's not something that will require surgery on so he could and up returning after the bye week. I would say right now, the I r thing. I don't I don't see that happening. I feel pretty good with him there and then in regards to both guys right now, with with Mitch and him, they're both a little banged up. So that's the number one thing that we have to look at. And then we'll take this bye week here again, and we will. We will self scout ourselves. Um And we will see The wares and the wise and whatever we need to do. We will do on a lot of different areas, so I don't I can't say one way or the other on anything other than we will every when you lose four games in a rough It's all it's all on the table. Everything's out there in the number one thing with Nick and with Mitch that we're concerned about right now is making sure that their health Is the number one priority, and that will be significant here moving forward. So for Matt, Maggie and the Chicago Bears, most important thing is to have a healthy quarterback and and also self evaluate ourselves. I mean, Mike Tomlin could probably say it a little bit differently, but their identity is not winning. Let's be honest. They dropped four in a row and so for them now, the biggest thing is to find a way to stop this skin. However, you have to do it. Let's see. Also in Chicago before we take our break in Chicago Sports a bit of surprise as Theo Epstein is stepping down as the architect of the Chicago Cubs one year before his deal is up on. He actually points to the current climate on the finances in the economy on D, how that's going to affect baseball in not just the next season, but the years to come. We're going to be facing a challenge of having toe allocate Essam temporarily reduced resource is in a way that would allow us to move forward and be successful and had I decided to come back in 2021 that would have made that challenge even more difficult. So, of course, was part of the reason a major part of the reason why they had all this great young talent accumulated and finally won the World Series in 2016, and he had always said that he was not going to re sign with the Cubs after his 10 years. That he feels like 10 years is long enough for a general manager to be in place with anyone organization. And so Jed Hoyer is promoted to GM. They're working on that kind of transition now, but I think it's interesting that he has the long term health of the club in mind. And and that to me indicates that he cares about what he leaves behind. It became, um, really clear that we'd be facing some significant long term decisions. This winner decisions with long term impacts, and those types of decisions are really best made by somebody who's going to be here for Ah, long time, not just for one more year. Theo has indicated it seems like that he will not take another job immediately, though I suppose there's always the chance that he could be Lord right back into the arena. Obviously, there are teams like the Mets who are looking for general managers, but he says that At least he sent an email to his friends that you know the Jeff Passan got his hinges on who? If you're if you're Theo, I've seen you sent an email to your friend and all of a sudden a major baseball insider ends up with it. Are you a little bit ticked? Would be or do you think that maybe he was anticipating that? In fact, maybe that's how the news got out there is that he knew one of his friends was the mole. I mean, it depends. What kind of friend we're talking about, You know is this friend work in the business in any way Do we know who was No. We just know he sent an email to his friends that somehow ended up with Jeff Passan. Maybe said, you know, send it along to Jeff. And just pretend like it wasn't me. So it was his leaked by way of his friends. Maybe he knows One of his friends is a motor mouth and can't keep a secret. And so he just assumed as you say it would be passed along to The medium has one of those friends. Yeah, we all do. And we all know to steer clear with our deepest, darkest secrets. S O. Theo Epstein. Stepping down in Chicago is is the Cubs as well as every other baseball team faces. Some some really franchise changing franchise altering choices with the lack of fans in the stands with the decline in revenue. All these things a zwei, look ahead in the spring of 21. All right. Your top three Thanksgiving must have at the table. Whether it's four of you or 24 of you or 44 of you, though Probably not. This year. You can find us on Twitter. "We had missed eight games and he just missed a lot of a lot of the time that he had developed with Tom Brady during camp last year, and it kind of set him back. And now we come in comes into this year. He's got a whole new quarterback, whole new a guy to get a rhythm with, so it's kind of been a frustrating experience. And he was even asked about that this year, you know, talking about some of the guys that were drafted in the same classes in a J. Brown. Ck Metcalf. And if he feels like frustrated all that he hasn't kind of developed on the same path of them, And, you know, he kind of stuck in the party line and say, No, I can't compare myself to anyone else. But you see small, small steps, baby steps with him, Um So, you know, I think they're hoping that this Ah, this development with Cam gonna really help him. I can kind of taken him under his wing. So I think you know, eventually you're going to see you're gonna see some great things from came from a Nicky What's What's the confidence level around Patriots fans in this game Because I tell you from the Denver side of the house, they're they're fairly optimistic. They played the Titans and Steelers pretty close. Despite all the injuries they got blown out by Tampa finally pick up a win against the Jets and I get all this time off, and you know the Patriots. Defend the past as well as they used to it for the mention of the reasons you mentioned before Denver fans that kind of feeling optimistic about this Howard Patriots nation feeling I think they feel pretty good. I think it was. You know, the hard part about it was trying to figure out who they were getting ready for was it wasn't gonna be you know, Uh, what? What quarterback was gonna play with gonna be Trulock was gonna be ripping, you know, but now I think that I Think that most of Patriot Nation feels like it's going to be locked. Um, I think that you know when von Miller went down, I think a lot of hatred stands like that game might not be as tough as it was in the past. But You know, Both teams have had so many injuries. Now I think the Patriots, you know Patriot Nation at least a fan that confidence is high. But I think they kind of forget on the fact that the Patriots are only really been on the practice field twice this game, even though it spent two weeks They had. They had a kind of Ah, light walk through last Saturday and then they had a padded practice on Thursday, so you can watch a lot of film. But if you're not on the film going, get on the field going through the game plan. It could be tough, but I think that people are kind of Underestimating the Broncos. Yeah, And I certainly imagine that Cam Newton is thrilled not to face von Miller as we all. Remember that Super Bowl 50. Thank you so much for the time, Jim. Really great insight will talk to you soon. Okay, Thanks for having me appreciate you. McBride from the Boston Globe at Globe, Jim McBride on Twitter. It's good point brings up there about the amount of time they've actually got on the practice field. That's that's a little bit substantial. Me again, You know, you know, Bill Bill, check in his game planning and give him two weeks I saw you know the roles we're goingto have coming up. In the next hour. I saw him tweet about it. I think earlier this week something to the effect of remember when he had two weeks to figure out Jared Golf for the Super Bowl and how that turned out well, But then again, it wasn't that he had two weeks to figure it out. He had two weeks to figure out how other people had done it and improve on that and oh, by the way, the game plan that he took was Vic Fangio's plan that had previously shut down Jared Goff. Exactly so. But but I mean, in this case, and we kind of went through it, I actually did a little deeper dive into Vic Fangio versus Bill. Bella check and I bring you some of those numbers coming up here just a little bit..

"You know if it takes place on Sunday or Tuesday, So I think the tape is benefited from that from that extra time, And you know, they had some handsome guys banged up. On the offensive line, especially on they had to re shuffle some things and and now they probably will be able to have close to their their normal offensive line back. So I guess I was here. The Patriots. I know, I know the Broncos have had You know, way more than their share of injuries this season, But I don't. I'm not sure that one when we could have made a big difference with him, you know, Novella check known for those defense is known for Get after the quarterback, But you look at the Patriots this year, too, feels a bit atypical in terms of defensive performance. They really have not gotten after the quarterback all that well outside of Chase, One of which, what do we attribute that to Well, I think you know, they front seven for the Patriots took a big hit in free agency and talked out. You know, the very underrated guy Last year was was nose tackle Danny Shelton, who ended up signing with the Lions. And then they lost three of their rotational linebackers free agency Landon Robinson. Child. Illinois, both point to the Dolphins, Jamie Collins went to the Lions. Then the big hit really was the office out of Dante Hightower, who's kind of the commander in chief of that front seven guy that got all the pieces in place. Um, so you know, they lost a lot of guys who have been kind of mixing and maxing. And it's kind of going with a hybrid approach it in evening fields has been a safety. His whole career has kind of been playing a linebacker. Hybrid approach. Thes First War games. And he's kind of been, You know, a guy against the run for the the The edge rushers have been, you know, haven't been effective that they have the last two years, So it's been tough. It's gonna work in progress, but I think that this defense hasn't really taken too much of a step backwards from where they were last year when they were they, you know, statistically one of the top defenses in the league. Jim McBride joins us here from the Boston Globe. Just a few more questions here for you, Jim. I want actually kind of go back to what a wild season This was expected to be for the Patriots. You have Tom Brady. Leaving to go to Tampa Bay. And then you have all the opt outs and this expectation now certain that's going to Jared's dead. Um and then Cam Newton signs there. I mean, you want talk about wild waves off what the expectations were just going to be for the Patriots? How have fans in general been reacting to all of this? And what was the expectation coming into the season for this team?.

"Wait. Don't get up to the ocean and I mean playing it any time. I guess we could play a one hit Wonder Wednesday. Not a one hit. Wonder with Billy Ocean two hits, Sir. Dude. Okay, Jesse, if I bring a Billy Ocean, this's it, This is a song, right? Anthony Rod, I know that you're under 35. But if I bring a Billy Ocean this is the song right? You don't bring up like multiple hits here, not doing Get out of my dreams and in my car for any of the songs That's actually a pretty good one. Never suddenly, no. No, I've never heard that one really ocean version. I know Billy Ocean at all of this is still the song. I mean, get out my dress, and my car was like the number three number one in the us. Yeah, You remember that one. Also, there will be sad songs was a number one hit. Yeah, I think you're just making up songs now, when the going gets tough, the tough get going. That was number two Billy Ocean Cash. These are all Billy Ocean songs, guys. I will still carry appreciation for good music. Carry being queen. That's that's the jam. I mean, look, I'm not saying that I pulled the top down on my car was jamming out to this like two days ago, but it definitely was and got caught by some girls at a stop light. It was slightly embarrassing. Yeah, I'm sure you just, you know, found a way to be charismatic and charming. And he was okay. And maybe I don't know. Probably not. They probably just continued laughing in the drove off. Oh, man, Right, So keep it together. Pull question. Ah, at K Way, Colorado who is more the game just like 50 50. Right now, there's more to gain with their starting quarterback available for this game, we say likely available for this game, but Is going to be to lock and it's going to be Cam Newton. Broncos with locker patriots with Cam. It's a weird I don't like. Sometimes we do these poles bin And I wonder because of the strong Broncos contingent that are voting on this. How much that sways like, what's the plus minus percentage that's bone ist to any proving pro Broncos. So this one seems like like a five. Maybe maybe upwards of a 10% swing of people are like, well, it's got to be Broncos with lock, but they're also a lot of self hating Broncos fans that what they're in the mood to basically Sabotaged these poles because they're like, Yeah, Whatever the other team is doing that they're better than us, and we're gonna lose and we can't fire everybody. The self loathing. Yes, yes, claims that there was a fire Everybody it and until they fire all these people, I don't even want to be a Broncos fan. But I'm voting on your poll question, right? Those people, but they have to tell you They have to announce to you that they are voting on it, But it doesn't matter because you need to fire everybody. That's that's that Broncos reminded of the scene from serenity, the movie follow up to the Underappreciated television show Firefly where his they're coming, and he's like, Look some fun, buddy. Fire everything, and that's what I think of. Whenever I see those guys. They want to fire everybody. That exasperated fire. Everybody think we'll discuss this coming up here in just a little bit. "It isthe and I was You talked about the code. I was under the mistaken impression that the code was imposed by President Roosevelt. But that wasn't the case. Oh, no, it actually In some ways In many ways, the movie studios wanted it because the reason wass they needed it just started. They start to get a lot of pressure with all the scandal and everything going on in Hollywood. That they had to do something, and the movie studios were fine with letting this haze Joseph Breen come in and And give the signal that they're movies were signed so that they could get the financing needed out of trouble. And before it was good for moviemaking, But bad for us. For sex scenes of nudity until 1963 when Jane Mansfield finally did promises, promises in the 19 sixties, when we had our first Nude scene in almost 30, plus years in a mainstream Hollywood film, and you also get into in skin a history of nudity in the movies. This is Jim McBride, Mr Skin, You also get into how it how nudity began to evolve back into and become permissible in film. Yeah, because what happened is obviously the 19 sixties. People's attitudes changed with everything going on. But prior to that in the 19 fifties, Brigit Bardo and, uh, Sophia Loren. We're making movies in Europe that had nudity and they showed up in our houses here that weren't controlled by, you know, the haze committee. You know, these are foreign films playing an arthouse private theaters and, uh, A lot of people went to see those as you could imagine, And it just people's added tour who started the change. And finally, um movies were being made with nudity launched by Jane Mansfield and Promises promises and then Obviously a big explosion in the late sixties, and obviously the seventies and eighties and nineties. Sorry. It's all it was crazy and you documented all in your new history of nudity In the movies. It's called skin, and it's available on pay per view anywhere where you get paper view. It's not exploited, and I think if you're a film buff, you're actually going to enjoy what he gets into its. It's very fact driven. It's It's not nasty, dirty at all. Skin. "Jim You concern like John. Harbaugh the raiders. Ravens that somebody could hack one of the teams networks. Yeah you know. I hadn't really thought about that until you know. Coach brought it up. But but certainly you know looking at the amount of emails spam emails. I get every day and say you've been hacked and looking at the strange ads that are on on the Internet now on twitter and on facebook. Yeah it's certainly a possibility. I mean I would be share. Well what's I mean? I'm sure there'll be a virtual private networks set up and I'm sure security will be through the roof on all of these networks and hard lines that the NFL's GonNa use in addition to back up and whatnot. But what's to keep somebody if if they're successful throwing in a mock pick like some some fan who's like really really really really computer savvy and is able to come up with some type of pick like. I want Jalen Hurts. Fifth overall like you and me were just talking about and there are sold on. Jalen hurts and they convince Miami they break into Miami's network and pick jalen hurts with them. I mean I would assume the. Nfl's gone over every type of scenario and furthermore Troy Vincent Director of operations for the NFL tried to reassure everybody and reassure John Hall. That's not going to happen. That's a joke. I hope so. I certainly hope that the security measures are place. But you know I I guess. Maybe you know old-fashioned hard lines would be you know in classes. Well like you know you make the pick virtually but then you have a fall in line there to just double check so you know. I guess that would probably be the only way to make sure it doesn't happen. But but certainly in this in this day and age of Technology. It's it's it would always be a concern. I mean you know the the president's election three years ago though there was. Was you know shenanigans going on so you just never know while? That's a great point. Jim I mean if it can happen at a presidential election level you wonder what somebody who has the? What are the two words? I'm looking for the motive and the and the skillset to pull it off what they could deal so espn I thought broke down. Some of the machinations of how this NFL draft will be different. I love seeing a human being. Do something that I would never venture to do. That's I would never in a million years want to do that to my stomach. I wouldn't survive. Yeah me neither. The first time I saw that and then the ducking of the rolls into the the water that That turned me dogs for a while back but it turned me off for a while to me. It's how the see those hot dogs are. They're cooked but they're not grilled I. I'm very picky with my hot dogs. And I love grilling hotdogs to like a burned. Crisp like the skin is burned on the outside. And then it's nice and juicy inside. That's how I will eat my hotdogs and usually I never have a problem and yes. The Bun has to be toasted as well. Look I will be the first to tell you that I am somebody who grills twenty four. I'm sorry twelve months a year around the clock. I don't care literally. It can be snowing. We saw the at Notre Dame game on Saturday night. That's that was that was great great game because the Irish came back and won that game in the fourth quarter so yeah great week dollar. How did you tailgate? We did a little bit of tailgate. Yeah not not not too much because we had a long drive. Indianapolis after the game but You know we did. Some tailgate was was Was it was quite a quite a weekend? You and me have been around too obviously a lot of NFL stadiums. The one environment that I really loved walking through a tailgating situation was not buffalo. Buffalo's great don't get me wrong. They they do it right in Buffalo. Route Wilson Stadium and bills Mafia. And all of that. They really do a great job but the tailgating experience that kind of blew me away was Kansas City before the AFC championship game. Yeah I I couldn't believe the amount of people that were outright at that game especially in that In those temperatures because man that was that was as cold as I remember covering a game And we've covered covered game. Some buffalo agree. Yeah but Yeah those are some die hard fans and I'll tell you that was the best smelling parking lot ever want to my my career. Yeah it's just well. Kansas City is as all the writers will tell you. It's a great city to go to cover a game if for no other reason than the food the night before if you Kansas City and you do barbecue right. Jim McBride well tracks likely. Stay SAFE DURING THIS CRAZINESS. Help you are to try to do the best we can in this crazy time? So you know. I'm trying to stay mentally sane because up physically. I'm I think I'm doing okay. I think I'm staying active enough and doing stuff in around the house even doing yard work like I did they over the weekend. Saying active is not the issue to me. It's more the mental aspect of all of us and kind of being reminded of it. Let's say every time I go into the grocery store with my mask on. That's the hardest part for me. Yeah you know. It's this this time of year for US anyway. On the Patriots. We do a lot of work from home. Anyway you know probably we would have ended the owners meetings but a lot of work from home so in that sense. It's it's it hasn't changed but you know having a full house like you know having the kids home all the time that that's a little different.

"Without further ado, let's go to Jim McBride. He covers the patriots for the Boston Globe. Jim one of the conversations we've been having over the length of the show today is the longevity of Tom Brady and Bill Belichick. We heard so much about the drama of that relationship. It seemed like this year in your opinion. What is their relationship like, and how long do you envision those two guys working together? You know, I. They're very tight. You know, they they're they're always interacting practice the training camp. All through the season. We never really see what goes on behind closed doors. So they were if they were at each other's throats read is we never really start. It's kinda like a family relationship. I think you you probably don't get along with everyone in your all. But you know, when push comes to shove guys always seem to be on the same page when there's a game to win that they they always seem to be right there working with each other side by side. So, you know, the national of the nation's the crack. Never really kind of resonated with us on the local Pete because we always saw it as a business as usual the way it's been for the last eight years or so on that note, Jim talk about the national narrative you were there in Miami. You saw that fiasco at the end of the game against the dolphins. And the New England goes on the road and loses to Pittsburgh the following weekend. So of course, people were saying, okay, the patriots aren't capable of making a run. It's going to be over the rain is over in the AFC. Somebody else will get to the Super Bowl in the AFC. Why were they why were they able to overcome those two losses and keep things together to put themselves in a position is currently in? You know, I think it's the short memory theory. They were they were down out. So many times this year, you know, when when the report came out last year that that that feeling Tom weren't getting along and that billing and Mr. craft weren't getting along people were counting the dynasty out. And then early in the season when they lost two out of their first three down in Jacksonville. And then again in Detroit, it was well there you go. Is over. There's no receivers got no weapons defense. Terrible. They were down and out. And then they went on a run like you mentioned they had those those back to back losses at Miami. And Pittsburgh and everyone called him down and out again. But I think after that Pittsburgh game that defensive play. So well in that game, even though they lost the they held Antonio Brown. And check they helped start check. I think they really liked the way they claim that damn even though they lost. It was kind of similar to eat the Kansas City Monday night game a few years back that that's fine. The famous onto Cincinnati Bill always talk now about how he saw something in that game. Even though they got crushed back game. And they and they didn't win. He saw something that you liked about his team. I think there's Pittsburgh game was very similar that they saw the adjustments. They made on defense guys were doing a lot of things. They would just you know. It just came up short Pittsburgh. But they really felt good about themselves away they plan. And then you know, they had a a two game stretch against buffalo and the jets, and you can talk about those the lack of quality talent that on those teams that level of competition, but they really found themselves during during that month that last month, you know, they caught fire like other teams have done late the season. And and turned it into a Super Bowl know here. They are champion patriots with Jim McBride from the Boston Globe on ESPN radio the ESPN app. It's autumn sitting here thinking about all this drama. Jimmy, it feels like there's been a lot of drama whether it's rob gronkowski can't play anymore because he's too slow. He's evolved into a guy that's contributing and one or the other story lines that I think is probably getting enough. Ron is Josh mcdaniels is still here. He interviewed for jobs, obviously, the colts story, but is Josh mcdaniels truly the coach in waiting when Bill Belichick retires. You know in talking to Josh last year. After you know, the whole Indianapolis accepting the job, and then he me during conversation that he wasn't made any promises that he was going to be the fear apparent the Bill. He was the only thing he was given was you know? A new contract and more money, but he wasn't made any promises about the future. Now, certainly would make sense that he would be the guy that would step in when Bill retires. But I think the fact that he took the the interview with the the Packers tells you where Bill is at this point. He's nowhere near close to retiring. So they were very happy that that that Josh is to be around for the foreseeable future. But I I still don't think that any promises wherever made to have like, hey, Bill gotta hang it up. This is your job. I'm gonna say on top of stay stay here with Josh mcdaniels colts fan since I lived in Indianapolis Colts for his probably aren't going to like that. I want to continue talking about Josh mcdaniels because of what happened last year here in Indy. What is it about Josh mcdaniels that makes him such a good office coordinator? I think certainly doesn't hurt that Tom Brady is your quarterback. The fact that he's that he is so plant specific, you know, you just never know what you're gonna get with with this guy. He he's now a pass happy league at the quarterback of the league. But here the patriots are the last two games rushing. One hundred fifty yards. He just paler game plan to the opposing eat. That's you know, there's a lot of guys out there that will you know, they run what they run. And and that's that's what you prepared for. Josh. It's always the element of the show. You know, there's one week. It's going to be getting e targets the next week. It's games. Like getting fifty targets. You just never know. This bill. There's no discernible pattern that defensive coordinator or head coaches can kind of figure out with this guy. We just smart he gets everyone involved. And I think I gotta go back again invention that Tom Brady quarterback. Wait, they have that great running back Cordeiro Patterson too. So. It's funny. You mentioned that like we've talked to Mike Zimmer this year before the patriots played the Vikings. You know, he readily admitted that that man, they're using him. Oh, they're using Cordell. A lot better than we ever did. And there's a guy that was first round draft pick never lived up to his expectations of Minnesota or or Oakland, but they got him here. And they said, you know, he has his skillset. No, it was unfortunate that a couple of running backs went down. And you know, they had the press them in there. But they do have out of the backfield. They knew how to run them on jet sweeps, and they basically they just knew how to get the most out of his skill set. I think they looked at him and said this guy so fast. How can we not use them? Yeah. Boy, it's going to be a great week. Jim McBride Boston Globe. Talking patriots football on ESPN radio. Jim enjoy the week and enjoy the Super Bowl. Thanks so much. All right, guys. Thank you. I bet that is Jim McBride Boston Globe on the ticker Senate hood show, real quick, Mike. Well, I I just listen to all that drama. And the thing that comes to mind is the patriots are still in the Super Bowl. And I think it's because they're all professional football people, not just professional football players. But you have Bob Kraft is arguably the best owner in all professional sports. You have you know, the the head coach the coaching staff like they just scream professionalism to me talk top to bottom. You alluded to earlier, you know, Tom Brady puts thousands and thousands and thousands of dollars. It's making sure his body's correct, Bill Belichick are we wanted the best head coaches all time and craft will do whatever it takes to get the right players to write coaches in his organization and when you have professionalism. When you have professionalism that goes a long long way into having success. Clearly, you need talented talent. But I had one coach player telling me early this season talking about the locker room in Indianapolis. And as he pointed out every NFL team has talent you don't reach NFL without talent. But you have to have professionalism and guys wanted to write way in. That's what the New England Patriots have out there in the northeast. Absolutely, right. All right. It's time to hear from you. Because this saints controversy doesn't seem to be going away. Should the saints move on does Roger Goodell. Need to speak up your calls her next on Dickerson and hood, ESPN radio and the ESPN app..

"Morning news. That means sports time, Mike Rice's here. What a weekend for football just made me bummed out. The Broncos weren't in it. But who lost yet? Well, I tell you what the eagles got a big one sports brought. By fix it. Twenty four seven plumbing and heating NFL divisional playoffs now set how about the eagles that go to Soldier Field and beat the bears sixteen fifteen Chicago had a chance to win. It. Cody parkey missed a forty three yard field goal with ten seconds left off the upright off the crossbar. No good. Hit a ball trying to play the wind. I guess there's really no answer to it. I thought I had a good ball. Trayvon Hester of the eagles d get some fingertips on the ball and tipped it. Absolute heartbreak city for the bears eagles move on. They'll take on the saints on Sunday in the divisional round early game yesterday chargers advanced with a road win over the ravens Twenty-three seventeen. Michael badgley kicked five field goals. Head coach Anthony Lynn said it wasn't their best day offensively. We struggled executing two plays in a row. But the move the ball when we needed to move the ball and badges a heck of a job making this Bill today. It made a big difference in this game. Overall speed with the efforts. It was it was definitely a complimentary win chargers at the patriots in the early game. This Sunday On Saturday. It'll be the colts at the chiefs don't count in the out of that one. And the Rams will host the Cowboys big big start to the postseason this weekend. Broncos wrapping up their head coaching interviews today in the Chicago area. They will be visiting with bears. Defensive coordinator Vic Fangio they'd spoke with patriots defensive assistant. Brian floor is in providence on Saturday. Jim McBride of the Boston Globe spoke with our sister station, orange and blue seven sixty and said floors has done it all really worked his way up the ranks. Who's a coaching assistant was even an offensive assistant a special teams guy for a couple of years, and then moved to the defensive side of the ball. So I think it's his versatility. He was the safeties coach he's been the linebackers coach. A good grasp on all three levels of the defense and how they mesh together and how to get the best out of a lot of different guys. So other than Fangio today. No other interviews scheduled to this point will see when the Broncos have a decision on who their next coach will be college football tonight, the national championship again to be decided Alabama versus Clemson that'll be Levi's stadium in Santa Clara, California, nuggets will start a tremendously busy week.
