Graham says Barr committed to letting Mueller probe continue
"Just as deputy attorney general rod Rosenstein is preparing to exit to talk through the changes at Justice and what they mean for the Russia investigation. NPR's Terry Johnson's here in the studio with us. I carry hey are what kind of reception did. William forget from senators today, mostly a warm one Bill Barr met with Republican lawmakers, including Lindsey Graham, the incoming chairman of the judiciary committee, Lindsay Graham told reporters he asked bar a lot of questions about the Russia investigation in the man leading it special counsel, Robert Muller bar and Muller are apparently good friends. Miller attended the weddings of bars. Children and Lindsey Graham says bar told him Muller is not on a witch hunt bar said he would make sure Muller can finish the job. And according to Graham bar also said he would quote, lean on the side of transparency. In terms of releasing any public report that Muller prepares all this new information, maybe coming out now to make bars nomination more attractive to democrat. Okay. So it's clear what the central tension point in this confirmation fight will be given that the Justice department is changing leaders in the middle of this contentious investigation, while his confirmation really be that easy. You know, there are a few complicating factors here. Whether or not these guys socialize with each other bar has been critical of some parts of this Russia probe. Democrats have been asking Bill barter recuse himself from overseeing it that's because he wrote a memo last year to the Justice department arguing that obstruction of Justice should be out of bounds. When it comes to Trump's firing a former FBI director, Jim Komi in that memo. Bill Barham, essentially said the firing was within the president's power not a crime, but bar has not agreed to recuse himself. In fact, it's hard to imagine why he would do that. And take this job. Remember, President Trump had a vendetta against the guy who used to be attorney general Jeff Sessions for recusing himself and leaving the. Russia probe in the hands of the deputy attorney general rod Rosenstein, and there is news about rod Rosenstein future. Today, Tulsa latest there. NPR's confirmed Rosenstein plans to leave the Justice department sometime after Bill bar is confirmed by that time Rosenstein will open on the job nearly two years. That's a long tenure for a deputy AG. It's probably the hardest job in the department in normal times. These are not normal times. I'm told Rosen signs leaving on his own terms. He's not being post, even though the writing's kind of been on the wall since the New York Times reported last year at one point he had discussed wiring, President Trump Rosenstein sides he was being sarcastic. They never went ahead with that idea as long as you're in the studio, I want to ask you about a development in the case against President Trump's former campaign chairman Paul Manafort, this looks like some self inflicted damage

"What ran counter to fbi norms and procedures and he knocks jim komi the former fbi director fairly substantially for those and goes through them in some level of detail and also you know there there were decisions that and and conduct on the clinton email investigation itself that was questionable but what he concludes is that none of this was done out of some sort of political bias or partisan animus in an effort to you know influence politics or sway the election itself and that is the major takeaway here or at least that's what the independent inspector general wanted people to take away from his report republicans will point to the details of the misconduct including some very damaging texts that were exchanged between two fbi agents who were involved in the investigation and involved romantically who have one of whom has since been kicked off of the russia investigation and say we take the inspector general at his word that these were inappropriate things that were done but we reject his conclusion that it wasn't because of politics we think it was because of politics we think that this was an instance of the fbi people in the in the fbi trying to deny donald trump the election and they were going to do what they needed to do to do that and so that's what they've taken away democrats on the other hand will say that this shows that you you had a few bad actors bad decisions but by and large this investigation.

"So the way these the way they, they bent over backwards not to make the case on Hillary and the way they've scorched the earth to find anything they could find on Trump and they have violated every norm that we have about investigations, including announcing the existence of a counter intelligence investigation and look. I love Jim Komi, but I mean he gets up in congress March twentieth of twenty seventeen and announces not only. Announces the existence of a counterintelligence investigation, but floats out that. And we're also looking whether they coordinated with the Trump campaign under circumstances where he's been telling Trump for three months. And I don't think. I don't think in an particularly credible way. He's been telling Trump three months. He's not a subject of the investigation. Now to my mind that's nonsense. He was a subject investigation, but that's neither here nor there. He told the president, you're not a subject of or you're not under suspicion, or however you are elated it. But we can't say that publicly. I'd be with them on that except that you can't say publicly other things that would suggest a people that he's a either talk or you don't talk. And if you're gonna talk, you shouldn't talk. We have good rules for you don't talk, but you have to then tell the whole story. So if he had got up on on March twentieth and said, we're also looking at any coordination between Russia's interference in the election and the Trump campaign, but be mindful of the fact that President Trump is not suspected in that as I've told him a number of times, he is not a suspect in our investigation, but we're still looking at what other people in the campaign did. If he just said that, which is what you've been telling Trump then a lot of what we're dealing with, we would not be dealing with and he'd be he'd still be FBI director. Given that's the case, and you talk about sort of the viscera of norms and the scorched earth policy, and we can go through your calms you've written about the litany of issues from the fact that it was a counterintelligence investigation, not a criminal investigation that the order itself covering this was completely vague and seemingly limitless, and also subject to modification down the road with a letter from Rosenstein. And we can talk about the fact that the investigators themselves are being investigated right now in many cases and the the layers of conflict of interest and all of it given that's the case. And you see the way that people can get taken down who were on the wrong side of a particular issue. First of all, what is it that at core is animating those people that are scorching the earth. And then is there still a semblance of Justice because this feels like a Beria like kind of system where we have the man, and we just need to find the crime to stick on him. That to me is the most chilling and frightening thing about all this. Take all the particulars away from it. The fact that if you're on the wrong side, they will get you and they'll find a way even if there's nothing there that is really chilling. Yeah, yeah. I think..

"Reading mr schweitzer a pleasure to talk to you sir my question is is this you mentioned two examples obviously with biden and mitch mcconnell what i want to know is how did the richmond happens his political class other the non elected areas the example thinking specific love is andrew mccabe everybody was in an uproar who supported him when he got fired by jeff sessions and yet i've seen reports that said that this man was not going to be living off the value menu that he's already got a net worth of eleven million dollars yeah no i mean the caller brings up a great point which is this is not just about elective office it's p people that are in senior government positions in lots of respects and they're different methods certainly in the case of mccabe you have situation with james komi where you had an effect this revolving door occurring at the leadership of the fbi that the you know they work in the fbi and then go out and work either for law firms or for contractors sometimes those are contractors that do work with the fbi is jim komi did then they returned to head the fbi so the notion of sort of public service that you know it's not going to leapfrog you to something else that it's not going to create these different polls for your attention or for your loyalty because you're looking to cash in it goes far beyond elected office and the callers right it concludes elements in the senior leadership of the fbi and you know that's problem when you talk about the fbi which is supposed to be the premier law enforcement agency in the united states you don't think of it as a pathway to selfenrichment but it has become that in in in you know several instances that we know about thank you for your call tim as we go to the next call i've never fully understood this corruption understand that that people will will try to break the rules but if money is your goal going into politics is not the.
