"Thomas and for tomorrow's installment of our series of profiles ahead off election day in canada next monday to almost luke's jug meet seeing the leader of the third largest party. The left leaning democrats. You're listening to the briefing on monocle. Twenty four today's broker. I'm the barracks of the world's smallest and most colorful army. The vatican's swiss guard are due for a major revamp. A forty six million euro refurbishment to be precise but this time the gods squatters will be designed to house female gods even though. The admission of women is not allowed yet. Let's get the latest with julie at lindley a form of and correspondent and regular voice hero monocle twenty four. Good afternoon to you. Juliette get to be here. So julius could you first tell us. Both the proposed to refurbish men's. How urgently is it needed. Well actually very urgently if you think that these barracks which consists of three buildings squeezed in the tiny quaint vatican city which as you know is the smallest country in the world they were built in the early nineteen hundreds so that over a century old that cramps have got inadequate isolation. They were made with poor building materials. So pretty urgent need to refurbish and over the next four years the plan is to create more private rooms with bathrooms rather than shared living quarters. A large kitchen canteen theater hall library overall thirty percent more living space. Now mike is the news. It apparently the new barracks are being designed to accommodate females wisconsin. Well that comes as a surprise given that ever since the core was founded and that was back in fifteen o six it's never included women so Yeah i'm kind of thinking that. The swiss foundation that's financing the refurbishment might very well be hoping for gender parity within the swiss guards but it's pope francis himself has the ultimate say in the matter and the holy see is absolutely mum on this. Now so what does what does it take the moments what is required for those who want to join the swiss guard. What exactly is the criteria that first of all gods you've you've got to be male fee a single catholic and your parish. Priests in your hometown has to endorse you. You've also got to be aged between nineteen thirty years old. At least one meter seventy four. You'd have to have completed basic swiss army training. And you need to have done an apprenticeship or posture mature or ballet. So guess what. Marcus is increasingly difficult to find young swiss men who official those criteria and who want to spend three years at least living within the seat of catholicism. Earning one thousand eight hundred dollars a month which that might sound not bad for a young kid but by swiss salary standards. It's actually not a lot. You are obviously joining us from zero. Can you tell us how how the job asked us. God is viewed in the country. Do the gods come from across the country and and east moving to the vatican considered a viable job opportunity. Well i'm not sure about how viable job of achier did is precisely because every year they've got to find at least three dozen new recruits and it's getting harder and harder often they recruit from french-speaking switzerland which tends to be more catholic and some from italian-speaking switzerland but is also much more logic would tell you open up to women and you'll have a greater you'll have a wider arena from which to choose your guards but you must know that you know. The swiss are actually rather attached to the idea of having swiss guards in the vatican even if that's their own sons. Don't particularly want to go and do that and from a pr perspective for switzerland. It's actually rather grade and you know those guards dressed in their eye catching orange blue and red. They're known all over the world and they're pretty much a hallmark of what sits and then stands for perhaps in the catholic world do. Do you think these these refurbishment is going to make the idea of going to the vatican more attractive for those potentials we scores. I guess the fact that it's more comfortable might make a bit nicer. But i think in general. It's just it's harder and harder. I think to find churchgoing youngsters. In general in switzerland and the fact that you need your parish priests to endorse you makes it even harder and a lot of young kids. I think they can think of other things. I'd rather do than spend three years paps at the vatican guarding the pope. Like just just finally juliet's can you tell us about how important the role is the sweet swiss guards place in the vatican. How important are they to that institution. They are the world's smallest army under the pontus personal escorts and they're mainly known that save for their ceremonial role during official events and also for people trips abroad. But they do have keith security tasks to marcus so they they carry out these tasks in conjunction with the vatican gendarmerie and with the italian security services. So they're not just there for show if you want about us the journalists and broadcast jimmy leaning thank you so much for joining us here on the briefing. And that's all for this edition of this program. It was produced. By reese james and emma. Our research was so what jim studio manager will increase block wa. The briefing is back tomorrow at the same time. That's saturday midday here in london. Twenty hundred listening in tokyo seven. Am if you're listening in toronto. Marcos hip goodbye. Thanks for listening..

"Hi Mike the office of a Chicago house party gone wrong thirteen people shot on the windy city southside police say inside the house party there was a dispute people started spilling out into the street shots were fired at people in and around the house thirteen people were shot ranging in age from sixteen to forty eight years old police say the scene was so frantic some people didn't realize they had been hit with a bullet fox's mac fan the Senate is waiting for the house speaker Nancy Pelosi to send the articles of impeachment to the Senate Missouri Republican senator Roy blunt says pelo sees stalling I actually don't think the speaker who has great power in a lot of cases I has the power to decide not to send over my determined will of the house of representatives they have voted they have voted on too articles they need to come and defend those two articles want on CBS's face the nation America is listening to fox news and the thirty five minutes James person in newsmax will be here but the two counts of impeachment to not communicating yet to the Senate which is an abuse of power by itself since Nancy Pelosi once a quid pro quo did your constitutional duty and I had a question from Kentucky in a few minutes ago of course not there should be no witnesses in the Senate because you have no idea how this witness is going to testify they're going to claim executive privilege are going to claim attorney client privilege it goes back to the court system takes many months whatever it is just get it over with do this to have the same rules and twenty twenty that the Democrats agreed to in nineteen ninety nine so let's continue now thousands on hold millions are listening let's go to has been there the longest coda Tony in New York on impeachment and then Christian Clyde Joe Edward Mike and many others and Tony New York welcome to the bill Cunningham show Tony how are you Gloria all to the bill I'm doing while you're great American thank you for doing what you're doing thank you thank you I also want to thank you for paying homage to Roger saw back come I think he was a great American when he served continues to be one and I say that as a follow American and also the Dallas Cowboys fan as well I mean I on that point I grew up watching him he went to Purcell high school is that it offers to go very very sell their skills he wanted to serve the nation they want to a course went to the Naval Academy he won the Heisman Trophy Joe Bellino wanted before these guys are there it was wonderful to watch all the cadets and midshipmen sang the star spangled banner watch the president be praised and so the media had to come up with something to smear the whole operation by making something up that did not happen and when the mainstream media wants to report lies about white supremacy symbols at the army navy game which was the circle game a bunch of crap I should say now wait a minute as a possible they did not intend to give white super I mean who in their right mind would think that on national television at that event that mid ship mentor cadets would give a white supremacist symbol only the mainstream media would believe that's a possibility when it turned out to be false in a light was the circle game not white supremacy the media drop that never apologize they never apart it talk about a truck never apologizing did you hear from Lester Holt Jim skewed all poppy Harlow or George Stephanopoulos or Gayle king they were wrong for days to care reporting that could dancers symbols of white supremacy are you kidding me they dropped it immediately when it was a live much like Nick salmon that was cross examined by Savannah Guthrie the today show has somehow participating in white supremacy and showing disrespect to a Vietnam War hero that being that Nathan Phillips character when it turned out to be a lie they dropped it completely when Jesse small lad who said he was walking around Chicago late at night and Megan had wearing white supremacist put a noose around his neck who would believe such things happening in the first place in Chicago but when it turn out to be a lie the media drops these things quickly when there's murder of Jews in Philadelphia by members of the black Hebrew nation part of the group protesting in the next ten minutes and by the way when it showed it wasn't white supremacist they quickly drop that one is Pensacola with the first guy was Mohammed that did the shooting they drop that anything that fits their bias and prejudice they promote doesn't thank nor please continue going more agree more I want to get your opinion on a part of that I have I don't think pillows the ever intended to present the articles to the Senate and I think what you're going to do to do is use McConnell statement about how he he he it made it that you know he's not biased and he's going to a quick trial I I think she's going to turn around and try to shut down can people stroke that she's not bringing the articles because McConnell already said the the the the the trials rig and that gives her exactly what she wants is the ability to speak to her allies on contested as they've grown that they've done all along so I think she's getting exactly what she wants Tony do you think the democratic candidates for the presidency in the US Senate should not said in the Senate during the trial now I like to have someone say if you're one of the three or four US senators running for the presidency is it prejudicial for you to sit in judgment of the president if you're gonna personally benefit the answer would be yes no one's talking of course but no one is saying to them Hey senator Warren you have to step down Hey senator Bernie Sanders you got to step down it doesn't happen that way because those are Democrats say play by a different set of rules in nineteen ninety nine Democrats the senators Democrats work with the Clinton White House to develop a strategy and how to present it the Democrats in ninety nine did exactly what the Republicans are doing now but the media didn't care about that today absolutely not why we're working with and in close to dispute the laws of the state and tell me how much collusion did CNN provide for the front for the Hillary campaign against trump they're in the collusion business that's what they do is collude with the Democrats to promote the democratic talking points how much collusion took place between Hillary and the creators of the falls dossier to get dirt on drop in Moscow with that peeing in the bed incident with the hookers that's what the Democrats do they how much collusion did the F. B. I. do and the CIA due to elect Hillary Clinton and have the insurance policy didn't they exactly engaging collusion and isn't right now isn't Hillary Clinton colluding with Chuck Schumer on a quid pro quo and they called abuse of power when trump does nothing but they're engaging in the abuse of power good to great you're more how how how much collusion is there were every damn Democrat when they get out office school who works for the local reporters are you online my good friend mark live then wrote a book on that three hundred circumstances where Liberal Democrats go from an administration whether it's bomber Clinton into the media like Jim studio that goes back to the to make money then because back out then goes back to Harvard or whatever the make all this big big Jack to make big money the collusion happens region the mainstream media and Democrats thank tanks law schools and when they did three witnesses that testified that trump was guilty number fact witnesses how can a law professor testified as to the guilt of someone on impeachment when in fact they didn't see anything it's an opinion how is that possible exactly exactly which which is why I don't think she wants these articles in a full trial to go to the Senate because ninety nine point nine if not a hundred percent above their wives will be fully exposed well I hope so but the American people will be told this Alicia listen to talk radio ever occasionally I mean right now Chris Wallace is completely lost his way I I have no clue what happened to that guy but none the less fox news generally about half the time gives us Hey if I want to watch CNN all watch CNN which I do on occasion I don't have to watch Chris Wallace to watch CNN I want a different view point of what the news CNN is not a news operation is not the most trusted name in news it is ridiculous CNN news Max is a pretty good job one American network does a pretty good job but fox has lost its way because they think that the money's in the future of being somehow more liberal and that's fine to Europe whatever business model you want but that would be one source I can go to to get the truth I don't get it from the mainstream media that and see if that is not a news operation I'm sorry it is not they can do what they want to do but don't call yourself differently than you truly are that's my only point thanks for your call and now let's go to Joe in Pennsylvania Joe in Pennsylvania welcome to the bill Cunningham show thank you for your patience so go ahead yes so thank you for taking my call and merry Christmas I'm calling because she's holding on to that impeachment because she's trying to get those Republicans in the Senate to go against trump and if she doesn't get him she's going to wait for the election in the she takes the Senate the Democrats take the Senate the big denture set a mobile and then there really impeach Jonas gonna see if there's an impeachment and there's not a trial is a not an abuse of power and in fact since the Senate is the only the only place to have a trial isn't it a quid pro quo which is unconstitutional to to to not send the impeachment articles over until Schumer and hello see collude together to screw drop in the Senate isn't out of quid pro quo by itself is not an abuse of power yes but you see how they don't care about the constitution we lost the constitution the way what you're doing bill good people in America kinda like lost what can we do to fight back the only thing we got is a ball well what what can we do well what's wrong with the vote in November what's wrong with saying if the silly Democrats wanted to say we're going to have oversight hearings that's fine do what you're going to do oversight put it on the rack whatever how you will then let's vote but they they want to take away your right to vote in November by taking away your selection for the presidency and they want to decide for you who's in the office now that's voter suppression right there when they cry about it all the time it's voter suppression joke yeah that is true but look what you're doing and no one is holding them accountable I don't see anyone going to jail call me everybody should be in jail Carper Brennan in jail long time ago what's going on it doesn't work if you're a democratic don't worry hi Gerry if the Republican or if you.

"High school kid did to do they just look at the film or no they go to the school and I talk to that that you have high school head coach they talked some teachers I talked to some parents that they get a bunch of bunch information right there for you make an actual informed decision if you're applying for a job at McDonald's over there they would probably you know they were also looking background check background check but they would also see other what other employers have you been at all that sort of thing a little more of a process now here's the other argument no we'll see a as a right to work at McDonald's no one has a right to get a dog you have a constitutional right personal right to possess guns that's the difference and so I don't know what the answer is I know we've tried many different things and even you Republicans are gonna pass red flag long and you're going to pass this background see none of which will have any impact zero and the Democrats know it because they've tried it and it didn't work with the parkland shooting that guy had I think three different people contact the FBI separately to report him and report that he had dangerous intentions that he was homicidal and that he was going to kill a lot of people any then nobody social media profile also and and if you're paying all a bunch of different sounds however we don't have the time to answer nine one one calls when you talk to Dan hills Jim meal nine one one calls come in right now they don't have cop to go there you mean to tell me a bit of a police force they're going to background checks to a bunch of people and no we don't have the time they say we don't do that well not only did I have the time but once they show up it is it part of a cop's job description to do a psychological analysis on someone whether not they should at that as a responsibilities a cop I be like look I do a lot of things is in my I'm not a psychiatrist I wouldn't want that responsibility it's pretty big and the Democrats in theoretically tried all these new brand new laws and they didn't work and Republicans no they're not going to work and Republicans are afraid okay we do one two and three in a fail in three to five years guys what gun registration under oath he tells every gun U. god make me a serial number and you pay for that and if you lie to assure a felon so gonna make felons out of tens of millions of innocent people that is going to start taxing amylin taxing guns every year had to be ripped re register and that goes on and off get on the slippery slope that's words had because at some point your friend Bernie Sanders will be the president in a she's going to be speaker of the house and wait for the laws to fly out of there and then all over is going to become criminals because Democrats say we are and I have NO in Cunningham thank you and by the way the dumber than the criminal element will never pay attention to those laws they couldn't care less yeah because the toughest gun laws in the country or in the city of Chicago how how's it looking good hometown of Detroit which could you even eleven Detroit though they have like sheep and cows grazing yeah they do and they are that's actually okay because like those vacant lots I was talking about when they bulldoze the houses they have all of this lady and that's just empty pharmacist and so they put farm animals on them and then they take those farm animals and they I guess donate them to yeah well they donate them to food food in the community because about Jim studio yeah and how about Chris Cuomo now but Anderson Cooper pitching a tent in these crime ridden areas for African Americans are forced to live and saying why have you failed with that thank you she said may give you some sports I'm afraid.

"Thank you, ping them for your support of this show in really FM off to say this. Okay. Never been to Disney right now. I've never been to discipline Christie. You've been to distant right? Many times Hollywood studios. Right. Yeah. Do you know the movie magic cried? Do you? The little storyline. They're trying to tell the mobster. You've got some teenager there. This hoping to be on the Disney channel one day. And they do the whole skit for you. You see those some hone? We all my God Simone that is you all my God Simone. We have to take you to Disney's mousketeers magic. Disneyland. Am I? The Kissel that right? So Mr. Chaney that you're right. They did. I remember when it was MGM studios. Yeah. I for me. I will never call it Hollywood Disney. It's like it's always Jim studios. Wow. I can't believe that cancelled my ride mutt. Guys. Guess what I figured out today? What Tokyo Disneyland? Tokyo. Disney sea. That's why it's called that. So moving on. Okay, fun story Ness cams necessary back in the headlines after a family's password compromise password was used to log in to their nest and experience really fun. Notifications of siren noises and an announcement that they needed to evacuate because North Korea was going was launching nukes at them and they had five minutes to seek shelter. So this was in the headlines. I because there was initially like a concern that this was a nest issue the verge has a piece up could like reaffirming. This is an issue of poor passer at hygiene. But this cannot be happy about this. Because the fact that the device was used means the people are looking at it and going oh boy been awhile since I heard anything good about that. Ain't it. Well, that's why I was thinking out love your opinion on this Christina Christopher mims of the Wall Street Journal friend of the show he was like asking on Twitter. He's like serious question has nest ever had any positive headline written about the ears? I went to Google news reader, and I would jet could not find anyone saying anything positive about nest as far back as I scrolled and scrolled for a long time. So I know it's weird, right? Because they came out with kind of the perfect product that thermostat and then Google bought them. And that transition was not great. And they're you know, Tony Fidel had a had a lot of problems based on reporting kind of fitting in with the Kuku machine. There were some other things going on. There were really late to come out with their own security camera, and they didn't integrate well with the drop Cam purchase, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah. But also than the smoke alarms were like terrible. And 'cause people's houses to alert them all the time, then they had a number of security breaches. So. Yeah. Now that I'm saying this a lot loud yet. It's been awhile. But yet the messed up thing is this is like tennis credit also to the discredit of the rest of the industry is that even though Honeywell and everybody else copies nest like as much as they can get away with the whole market of trying to get these like smart like thermostats is such an issue show. The nest is still the best presuming your house supports that wiring witness, not every house does. And I only know this because my friend Brian Holt, behold, definitely not listening to this. But I wish he was he just moved into a new house, and it didn't have the the connections that would work with his nest which made him very sad. And we were looking up and try. To figure out what? Okay. Well, what Honeywell product would work in. What's most Ness-like, and it became this? Ridiculous. Ordeal. You know, there was going to require him going to Home Depot in like hiring. Do it come out to his house and whatnot. So we ended up buying a dump thermostat and is sad. So if you can get Ness to work even with all of its issues, it's still like the good one. You know, because when it comes to the the smart home stuff that space for whatever reason is still like not ideal. And I say this is someone who's not a homeowner and doesn't have as never had an SM to use other peoples..
