"And i'm training. The trainer training the coaches. Because we all need it. We all need to be talking mental health and mental fitness. How we take care of ourselves on a daily basis to make sure we're okay. We're chatting with rachel barbosa. We will include your phone calls in a few minutes a day. Five to four two seven two eight five. We're watching a number of baseball games as well. Alabama back in the tournament for the first time in a number of years has lost. Its first game. Eight to one against and see state They'll have one more opportunity to maybe more than that. But they're they're down to a double elimination around. So we'll take a break much more with rachel barbosa and i also want to talk about rachel's experience with the media. The media has been under fire lately because of the situation With from the french open with schalke. And we'll talk about that as well. We are coming right back much more to go right here on a friday afternoon. Listening to the paul finebaum show podcast a little bit to your former life out of one. Who said he was a recovering Attorney i don't wanna put words in your mouth. But i'm i'm particularly curious about your decision to walk away from a field of sports broadcasting and journalism is something that you were very successful. I as we've said and and very good at the quite simply it no longer set my soul on fire and a crisis dope if you will because for a leading to the fall twenty nineteen. I'm changing the game bigger and bigger and more and more. I never saw going where where where. It's where it's gone and here i am. I know some of these players deepest darkest secrets i know. Their mom has been abused. I know they had depression. I know they almost took their own life. I know all of these things in my soul and then after a game paul was sticking a microphone in their face for serious and say. Tell me about that great. You know catch you know. Tell me about that. Great route iran and The great tackle you made. And i almost feel him looking at me like who you are. You mentor and friend and speaker every year. Your reporter are you gonna tell my secrets and so it became really a crisis of the solve for me. What do you really want to do with your life rachel. My friend gina lahey who works at means. He used to work with the college football playoff side door. Her she said rachel. You know you're not defined by being a sportscaster. She said you're seventeen. Years is a sportscaster was a runway and gave you the relationships to be able to know these coaches and then to trust you and then to allow you to be on their meeting in floors without notes without any forewarning bay. Trust me with their players and so you know the simple answer. Is that no longer set my soul on fire. The deeper ed or is it was a conflict in the soul. Let's talk about the ever second because there is so much Self examining right now in in the media after what we've heard earlier in the week from the french open and that's not the first time mean this has been going on for a long time and i It's a it's a topic that interests me greatly. Because i understand what you're talking about and i think all of us were at least i'll speak for myself have had to ask myself the same questions that you dealt with and just from someone who understands it and has so many friends that that are still in it. I know it's a tricky question. But you know what is going on from your perspective in in sports media right now. I think great reckoning. I think what's happening in our country in our world is a reckoning of the soul. I think you can't be alone and you can't pause like we did and and not have this in And this is like this. You know reckoning happening. And i think it for a lot of us And if you if you came out our say this to my to athletes in two cousins aboard told everybody that work with young old as save you came out of the pandemic. The same person that went in you needed to be needed to be looking at your phone. Examining what change like the short life is precious and we're not promised time. Kobe taught us that. So many losses recently taught us that and so i think a great reckoning is happening where a lot of people are looking at themselves and saying how am i am i. Okay what do i need. And i have wild. The the the news out of the french made me really sad how she was treated. What made me what makes me the happiest right. Now is a mental health is being discussed everywhere anywhere in workplaces amongst fringe groups. It dinners in sports. Sports talk shows like yours. I mean in teams. And i teach coaches how to have in business owners. I teach them how to have small groups and how to have those uncomfortable conversations and how to be get comfortable being uncomfortable because that's where the magic happens and how to take off the mask. Is there something. Paul that was meant to kill you but didn't guess what you're supposed to tell somebody about it. And then the the other side of that is. Maybe you've never experienced trauma you don't have to experience great trauma to have gone through have mental health issues right. So let's get you at a good place in terms of mental fitness. So that when you experience a bumps in the road or complete devastation. Like i lost both. My parents lost a number of other people and Candle as i mentioned earlier contemplated taking my own life. And and i was ashamed. Palmas up to talk about it for a while. And then i recognize if i'm asking people across the country to take off their masks. I need to get real. And that's win. This movement just blew up really. It was already big. We already going all over the country. Talk programs it's programs and everybody in between but it blew the lid off but we began to talk about my own mental health. My own ability mild radical vulnerability always say that man opened up your soul and and share who you are and what you've been through telling you people be drawn to you so i i really think there's a great reckoning going on right now all people are looking in the mirror and say who am i go about my job my business and that includes sports media or rachel at that moment and i know that you discussed it but how do you how were you able to come through the darkness When you were facing your own mortality. I call it my darkness soul and i appreciate the u. Being vulnerable going there right now because there are people out there within the sound of voices that have felt the same way in and truth be told hearing somebody else. Go through it. They let alone. And that's what i tell them. You're not defective. You're not broken. You're not week. I had gone through a break- and then my mom passed away. After ten cancer battle. I had barely worked because i chose into to spend a lot of time with her financially. Wasn't integrate place may just being vulnerable and felt like i had the perfect storm of life and i started to hear voices. This said you're weak and you're defective in your book yet and an nobody's ever gonna book you and look at you. You're going to lose your house and you're gonna lose your mission nobody ever stays and And and they were terrible voices. Voices wouldn't go away. paul. I actually saw myself picking up the gun off the top of my refrigerator and using that to take my own life and the only way that i can figure what happened to me. Is that one for me. Faith is involved in for some people that don't have a fake perspective. That's totally okay. You have the life force in the will to live but for me. I believe that there was a great battle that was waged that night and detriment to kill me but he didn't and what he went to kill me with actually gave me the greatest blueprint to go out and tell people that you're not alone and you're not defective as i mentioned and so what was meant to kill me is actually made me stronger and given me a platform greater platform to be able to touch an effect people. So i think people ask. What is your fate. Is it your life or is it remembering your family. The other thing happened to me. Paul is getting up for serious. The next morning it was absolute disappeared. Sauce jim ida. Two night's sleep deprivation..
