"Group basically what tiger did everyone his entire career right get a lead with driver and then best ball striker and he'd go out and just fairly green to death with three woods and to off the T- I. It's a tough balanced. It's a tough balance. It really is I guess my only point and and again I definitely, I'm not here to stand and say the way it is I think we we should all have opinions in the folks listening, which is my opinion, right? Wrong. Doesn't really matter. But my opinion if you're asking is US L. Ben Media to get the ball in the fairway. So make premium and I think that's the US Open winter. I think when it's firm like so much of this goes out the window right because the shorter hitters can can hang with the longer hitters a lot better with VOL's rolling out and it becomes less emphasis and that's one of the things about bethpage it's yes it's damp there a lot. It's Kinda cool. Damp that Long Island you don't get that real firm golf course feel. there's wonderful golf course but Yeah. An in unless it rains younger back to congressional, which is a very difficult hard golf course but rory tore it up but it rained so much the golf course was soft and when that happens these guys throw darts. So you're right US Open. I'm not saying the FAIRWAYS has to be twenty five yards wide but you know we've seen some forty plus yard wide fairways and us. Open it's just it's just a rare look and I think from what I hear. We're GONNA see wing foot kind of thinned out. You know it's GonNa be a little bit narrower, I i. think it's a phenomenal golf course it said So tilling has bunkers there. They're honest there. You look. At some of those Greens, and you see the the big white flash and they're intimidating and a tough place to play. Yeah. So ironically, the the US Open that you one was one of the easier not easier setups you're. There's only a couple of guys under par but it was terrible terrible easy I think there's two or three guys who Eleven under one point, which was a record I think to that point. But what do you remember about I? Guess we all Olympia this past week at the BMW championship to that look a little different on TV. This time around how tough applegate looks like they lengthened it out some. We saw some extremely good scoring conditions for the US Open that I want. So records were set Thursday and Friday. The Wind. The burris came from a totally different direction a much easier breeze. We had overcast skies fairways and Greens weren't firming up that all changed on the weekend water got sucked out of the Greens. Breach Change Direction, and all of a sudden you had a extremely tough golf course in and that happened a lot that happened the year. Fill and relief ballot at Shinnecock was Oh four. Yup We broke scoring records on Thursday and Friday there as well, and then the golf course was. A borderline unplayable on on Sunday. But Saturday Sunday was extremely difficult. The scores those two shot under those conditions were some of the Best Golf I've ever seen play. So you wanted eight under Stephen Leaney was the only other guy that was within seven shots of you. I mean they were you in complete control that whole week or I was playing extremely well on into that golf tournament came come on all three top ten's felt really good about my game was putting well. Really. Felt good about my golf swing I. Mean I. Had My week off I was kind of licking my chops like what do I need to do to get ready for this golf course and had never played Olympia fields? And I was putting with this putter at the time that was deemed illegal in my week off. So I went to the US Open. I didn't actually have A. Really have putter with me. I had a potter, my bag widow something. I didn't WANNA play. Why was he the legal? So at the time it, it was a It was a double bent shaft. So Face balanced. Odyssey would call it a one. Paying answer. Kind of type ahead but it had this aluminum attachment on the back that Kinda screwed on and it had a long line. So it kind of made like a big. It was basically an aiming device on the back and at the time the the USDA deemed that you couldn't add. an attachment to a potter solely for aiming like if there was another reason for like if you wanted to back way to potter or if you wanted to and it was made of aluminum so there's nothing you can really say by waiting because it was light and it was there solely for for alignment so. They deemed that putter was illegal. So I wasn't allowed to play that week and I. Kind of had a chip on my shoulder. I was a little bit. pissed off about that that that you know there's butter goes it didn't seem to make make a lot of sense but kept my mouth shut I pulled the shaft out of that Potter and put it in another one that had a long line just no attachment on it, a mallet butter and And kinda worked on that. Potter the law, the lie and every day was making a tweak here and there and I mean like tweak driving driving my tour rep absolutely not those like a quarter degree upright writer like really was going to matter that much. But I had this you're a tinkerer I was tinkering with this potter tremendously and potted beautifully that week I think I'd have been with my shoulder to after rough star couple over after the first nine, and then I think I shall five under and played a great Friday round and got myself in contention so. What's it like to win a major is you know you're pretty much in the prime of your career I think safe to say in two, thousand, two, thousand three is that fair to say felt so. You. Is that a weight off your shoulders? Is it just like I'm trying to trying to understand what how to place majors in people's careers right? Because I kind kinda want lead this into you have some so many close calls afterward is it easier to go through the close calls after having one one I just Kinda I wanNA, place it along that timeline. I don't think it's ever easy. Mean has some close calls in ninety eight both at the masters and the British had. You know some good opportunities I think for me. It's funny feeling when I one. was probably for the first hour was probably more relief you know put so much pressure on myself. You sit on that t time it's two or three o'clock I walked into the players dining kinda sat under the corner and there was a TV above my head and usually like in the morning or an afternoon round I'll watch TV. would. Love to have the sound off but I'll watch TV. Jesse with a pins are maybe I'll see a couple of shots. Maybe I'll pick something up on television that that might help during the round and usually it's only for fifteen or thirty minutes. But I sat under the TV I didn't WANNA. Just didn't WANNA watch. I. Don't WanNa think about it in the sound was like someone flipped sound on and I was underneath it and I heard on never forget this Johnny Miller talked about a talked about me having the lead of three or four.

"I career feel very comfortable with the putter a role in the ball. Well so just gotTa put autonomous short game. I mean how much is my game changed? You know? I. When I first came on tour, I was a very average ball striker and I kinda worked myself and my first ten years on tour. I kind of worked myself into becoming very good ball striker by PJ tour standards and I had a really good ball striking last two seasons. Nineteen twenty and eighteen nineteen I had two very, very good ball striking seasons and you know this year you look at my if you look at my. Prevent percentage it fairways and actually even look percents. Greens. It's it's it's pretty surprising. I still hit the ball well enough but I'm not getting the ball on the hole and I'm just giving up a ton of distance. If that makes sense you know now I started looking at like. Started looking at stats through the mid to late part of this year and I really believe the average guys on tour throughout that number before to eight two, three, zero to a bulk of the tour. kind of sits in those numbers on average in two eighty one. So I'm giving up. At least seventeen yards to kind of that average length. I Long I was in my career was to eighty two. But. The average guy hit like two, hundred, eighty to eighty nine I was giving up six or seven yards to the average. Then you know early in my career wasn't given Abani and so. You know I'm still good ball struggling to get iron player but you know from the average Guy I'm giving a you know pretty much to clubs from the middle of the fairway that ends up the bombers given up even a lot more. So there's courses you know harbour town can still compete val spar when fairways are important when you don't have to bomb it when when guys are even a limited off the tee on some of those golf courses and it's more about placement. I still think is some chances but this you know it's farther fewer between and COR setup exchange equipment change the game really has changed and I think You know. I. Hope no-one Paints me as that old bitter guy that says the games changing it's fun. I mean, those your viewers out. There are the ones that love golf listen to your show. I mean, it's golf's in a great. Great Place Right now it's fun to watch is exciting. It's just different you know and and what I grew up, it was different from Nicklaus's hate as well. It's just everything changes and evolves and the best players do with it. I'm just getting maybe a little old to to change my style. Well, What's interesting though is when I go back in you know. Getting to know you a little bit. It's. It's weird like old highlights on TV right into one that I don't even remember you being in contention of a master ninety seven masters, your names on the front of leaderboard like your your career spanned generations end when it when the distance boom came in the two thousands in it's it's slowly evolving to the point where it's very streamline. Now I think people have so much more data and know exactly what the value of it is but so many guys similar. Similar playing style to you did not have sustained success for fifteen twenty years after you know the golf ball changed around two thousand right. But there was guy I, mean look at a guy like Fred funk I mean, here's a guy he had shorter than I did yeah and straighter, Guy Guy, I want Australia's players of all time. But you know he made like a Presidents Cup team in his late forties forty, eight, forty, nine years old I. Think if the hearts there if you know the the work ethics there guys willing to put the time in I. Think you also see a little fall off from some guys. In their same mid forties, just life changes as well. Your kids are certain age your priorities change Maybe you're not putting as much time into the game to you know, look maybe Kenny Perry where. Family is very important to the Perez and he's a wonderful man and his game Kinda through his late thirties early forties kind of faded a little bit right and his kids were kind at that age where they're growing up and you know they went off to college and then and Kenny's early to mid forties. He all of a sudden turned it around started putting the work in and You know he was a top. Top Ten player in the world won a bunch of events played on a bunch of presence teams, Ryder Cup Team you know just had a really. Late, right now he's also got big and strong and bombs the ball but I think a lot of it's where you're at in your life and a lot of folks put so much effort into their their game and and Kinda, getting and climbing that mountain and they do it for twenty years and and then just other things take shape priority as they should. That's as I get older. You know I I you know five six years ago. If you said, you know you had six hundred career starts all cool. Like that is he's super competitive now I hear six hundred starts at like, wow six hundred weeks on the road away from families gotTA. Be just super challenging I mean it's it's a tough balance I think it it's it's an it's a balance that we all struggle with and and I saw the help I mean my my wife and my Dad Kinda gave me their input and how they felt I should handle it and it sometimes it's tough taking advice from those who you love the most I kinda sought advice at our media day for our event you heard me say that I as Davis for Bob Hotel is number. That really wasn't as much about it really wasn't anything about golf..

"Bag you might need to get in there was like seventy, four, hundred comments as I go to. Record this little intro here also go to Calvin Golf Dot Com. You can subscribe to an email us for a chance to win a callaway maverick drivers Cybele by Phil Mickelson himself. So without any further delay as we roll into US Open, we rent a full US Open preview coming out later this week but here is Jim Furyk talking about Mir, things good Ryder, Cup stuff here a lot of good stuff within this but thanks everybody for tune in and we'll soon. Cheers. So do I introduce you as champions tour player Jim Furic or PGA Tour player Jim Furic what's your answer to that? Yes. Yes very good question. I probably got six hundred and some starts on the PGA tour one on the champion tour. So you figured out you do want. Well. I was saying you should just retire from the champion. You Win your first start just like just a complete walk off and it's only going downhill for here for you know percentage wise from here but no, I think to answer be serious answer your question. I'M GONNA play a little bit on the PGA tour This next season I'm GONNA start the year Napa I feel myself transferring over and being a little bit more fulltime PGA tour champions player for a number of different reasons. There's still some courses I love I love innisbrook and the Vowel Spar Hilton head the RBC heritage that golf courses phenomenal. So there's be places I'll pick and choose I. Like colonial but I see that it's also opposite to senior PJ next year. So I've been kind of looking at the schedule and and I've always said all along that I. Really don't WanNa go fifty fifty I don't WanNa cut my time and I don't care what tour you're playing on. There's enough town on either tour that playing half a season you're not gonna get a lot done do a lot of damage. So I think I'm going to probably focus my efforts on the champion. Star and Cherry pick some events on the on the PGA tour will at the Media Day this week for your tournament which we can get into here in a second but you and Davis love kind of pointed out the crop of guys it is currently coming up to PGA tour champion I gotTa admit I hadn't really Thought of it that way until you spelled it out exactly how good the competition's is getting out there but you seem you seemed very excited and eager to get out there and I don't want to cut the Guy Short already out there on ruffle any feathers before I start playing full-time. There's a lot of talent already there but look at you know relief and Ernie, just came out you got you know. Phil just turned fifty I turned fifty Mike we are and I share the same birthday k j Choi just saw rich beem played his first event and you've got a slew of others on the way Duval's pretty soon Justin Leonard begats only about five years away that receding hairline it looks like he's GonNa turn fifty next year but know he's about five years younger than me. Do they play out there I, don't know. We'll see we'll see you know what's put it this way five years ago. I'll ask this question. Did you think Phil was going to end the champion's tour? I. Don't think he's GONNA play nobody. Would it look like five years ago? A lot less bright than now. You see them come out and he's got a little hole in the schedule and he wants to get sharp and he's playing good. He finds of course, he likes and he's talking about playing later on this fall. So is he gonNA play full-time? No wrong. He's he's still hitting his bombs and he still wants to play the tour and extend that career. But the fact that he'll come out and play some on the champions tour now and then you know little by little I think he'll add more and more of that because he likes to compete what is the the competitive spirit of it like A. Man What is it? I guess just kind of talking about your transition and why that is appealing to you from is from a competitive standpoint is it? You know I still think I can compete on the VJ tour made a good run into the players last year. Now it's kind of you always have your favorite courses the ones you think you have the best odds to compete on throughout your career and the number of courses that I have that opportunity on is dwindling and I'll pick a a golf course like Charlotte Quail Hollow Great Golf. Course was one of my favorites on tour one there I think to other second places if place finishes. It's just it's gotten longer. I've gotten a lot shorter relative to the field still hit the ball the same distance, my percentages of being able to win there have significantly decreased and to the point where I almost felt like you know I'm I'm wasting my time going to this venue I need to start picking other places that I can compete at and so when I look at. The length of the golf courses on the champions tour. They're not short over seven thousand yards. We Played Warwick Hills at the ally from the same exact tease. on seventeen and eighteen holes as we did. The last time I played there in two thousand and nine. I hit the ball. The same distances I did know nine. So it was like I never left you know hitting the same shots but we're not playing seventy six hundred year golf courses and I'm not playing against you know. The majority of the field can hit it. You know somewhere between two, ninety, eight and three to you know I'm not giving up a lot of extra yards and I'm a little above average out there for driving. So that's kind of fun I. Long It's been since I've been above average and driving distance may maybe since late May Have I you know seven years on tour. So I missed some friends out there I know it's a little bit more relaxed but I saw a lot of guys practices beaten balls working on the shore game Puttin and the guys are competitive. They shoot low low low numbers issue you know. Fifteen, hundred par, you really don't have any business or any chance to win and and so it's a, it's a track meet every week. It's a three round track meet. Now how different is your game currently at age fifty? Then say the best the best time of your career I mean, we played a shot sixty six. There doesn't seem to be any decline in my eyes. You want your first start on the champions tour. Is it the game has just evolved some from a competitive standpoint from distance or you know I just Kinda WanNa compare contrast you know how the best you ever played versus how it is today I would say. I mean, we always say right this second we say, Oh, look at this this season I didn't have a very good season from around the Greens you look at my shots game putting if you look at my getting the ball up and down numbers some of those were actually quite poor that was a strength throughout my career I need to put a little more time on my I think my equipment and more importantly I got to put a little more time in on my technique in the way. I. Get it around around the Greens I feel like I've I've kind of started. I've changed my putting here in the last couple of months now not left and low or cross ended on back shooting and say back to conventional I'm starting conventional pretty much for the first time..

"Biting and hard Sunday the challenge came with the setup. And the wind and the players knew it was coming the challenge was They're the combination. The open is known for over the, years in, the early finish your Sunday gave you an indication the scores weren't going to be as. Low as they had been in. Earlier rounds of the tournament but that didn't mean it wasn't going to be a tight race to the finish oh it was. Every bit a tight race seven different, golfers had, the lead at one point. Of the final round crowd. Favourite Justin Rose was the first to hit the clubhouse with a strong finish six under. For the tournament Then many others on the course saw that standard but they just couldn't hit the bullseye third-round. Leader co leader Justin speed the defending champ Jordan Spieth pardon me early struggled early much like me right here and never. Got right finishing at five over seventy six time for ninth is fellow third round co-leaders Kevin Kisner Zander sharply. Both faltering shooting three over seventy four for Tiger Woods well. It was a. Special tournament signaling too many his comeback is still on the rise. But an even par round of. Seventy one wasn't going to be enough for him to hang with the hottest and most consistent golfer. On the planet these days Francesco Molinari the Italian followed up his six hundred sixty. Five, Saturday with another bogey-free round two hundred. Sixty nine bringing him his first major championship making him the first Italian to win. A major Molinari paired with woods demonstrated he had no equal this week over the final thirty seven In holes he played without making. A, bogey which standing the challenges from so many. He parred the first thirteen holes Sunday, birdied fourteen and finished with a birdie on eighteen to go out in style yet even some time after winning and being presented with the cleric jug. And giving an acceptance speech Molinari was still trying to understand what he had done just these beliefs to to be honest. It's amazing to stand here with the with the Clark jog I knew was coming in with the you know. With some good golf my record there on here was terrible That didn't make me to think about the week but I just tried to to you know nothing about. It and and focus on hitting shots they way to go, the weekend bogey-free it's, unthinkable to be. Honest so very proud of of today very proud of playing with tiger was another challenge because of, the of, the crowds and everything. But I felt I felt really good This morning when I when I came here I thought I, was I was ready for the challenge Visit. Conscious that you could have gone, either way but I knew I was gonna. Do my best today when. You were in that room bury your head in your in your face looks like maybe. You wept what were you thinking I couldn't even watch on their played host to be on, that so that's why I went to the putting wrinkles Watching on TV and So be, credits to my wife watches me all the time How she does, it I couldn't do it No, I, mean it's, just disbelief like I said it's you know to. Like me coming, from, Italy not, really major golfing country it's been it's been an. Incredible journey Cesco can you expand a little bit on the difficulty of playing in the group is, tiger raining, you, did to kind of prepare yourself. For, that and just as a second question you're up and down on thirteen was that, maybe the key moment view as kept tiger and so forth was great today you, know really. Really good, spas sportsmanship with me obviously there's a lot, more people if your group. Within then. If I'm playing with the I can't really say names but some some of the other guys I done it, before I, play, within before in in Ryder Cup. Sending, in big occasion so I knew what was coming and I was ready for it Now I mentioned it was a pretty special week for Tiger Woods and most will probably. "In the last five weeks is absolutely phenomenal but remember this is a guy who's an inexperienced pro golfer and has been on the Ryder Cup team before and if someone we're going to have to look. Out for this coming Ryder Cup in France Paris that being said now I'm gonna make all the Tiger Woods fans freak out and get mad at me when I say at one point during the day on Sunday the only guys. That were bogey-free Tiger Woods and Francesco, and they were playing together guests who stared down Tiger Woods on a Sunday and even after tiger took the lead ended up beating them, and win the Claire jug Francesco Molinari so. I know tiger fans how, dare you know what this is the age that we live in that someone like Francesco Molinari can play really. Great golf and beat? A guy like Tiger Woods who makes Surcharge Michael Collins on. Sportscenter with Zubin Muhindi now it's one thing to hear tiger talk about having the opportunity to be. A champion again and having it right in the palm of his hand and it's one thing to have Michael Collins getting giddy over that fact but when one of tiger's true competitors realizes the future possibilities Well that's. Saying something is ROY McElroy not. Tiger that Phil and Ernie and all those guys how to deal with it's a sort of it's a different version, but you know he's right there you know he's right there he's getting. Himself into mix you know he looked good in in DC A couple of weeks he's he's looked, good here I'm not sure if if, that finish is, going to get him into Akron or not you know he's he's played a, full.
