Chinese scientist claims world's first gene-edited babies, amid international outcry

"Is, gene editing. Where are we in terms of what has been proven scientifically? So as an in vitro research tool, it's fine. But actually trying to produce babies with this technique. But it does expose them to significant risks. Professor my right that the technology behind all of this is sort of coming to four right now. And it it's not a matter of if this can be done because there is seems to be some dispute as to whether or not this actually was done, but scientifically speaking, it's feasible. I think at this point the primary reasons why we haven't tried to produce children who are generically engineers are primarily ethical and policy rather than scientific it's not obvious that this individual has succeeded in doing it. And in fact, I think there's a lot of reasons to be skeptical of his claims that being said the technical ability to be able to create altered embryos has already there. And then the next step would be to try and create children with them. However that is such a large step, and with significant risks associated with it that requires a great deal of spot concerned oversight consent, all of the things that seem to be missing in that particular research that was undertaken in China and not to overstate the obvious. But if you do this in vitro, you don't know how the child's going to grow up, right? You don't know the implications. That's correct. It's going to be an experiment that that's been true. For a lot of reproductive technology. The first in vitro fertilization, the first uses of of sperm injections or a lot of those attempts to try and create babies new as we're all researching all experiments to see if they could work in many of them have been successful. It is possible that it's going to be a we're going to be able to one day to be able to safely produce alterations. But one reason why researchers and scientists and the ethics community are so concerned is when you talk about germ line, interventions, this is the change in the particular child that you're altering. It's also a change in future generations. I wanted to ask you a little bit more about the ethics community to what degree do you all work together? Internationally, in other words, this stories came out of China. Will there be political pressure from around the world? I'm sure there. Well, there's already even within China. A large group of scientists who signed a statement criticizing this announcement and the academic institution that these scientists was associated with has already suspended him in conducting an investigation into his activities. I think one of the things this highlights is one of the challenges in this area. Is that the technical expertise needed to do this come from a variety of fields in this particular? Scientists is a physicist is American advisors. Physicists these are all people coming from a background. That's really not very well steeped in human subjects research protection, and like sorts of considerations. That are usually brought to bear. And it highlights the importance of really hadn't people who have that kind of knowledge background and experience to know what it takes to actively conduct research on human subjects that was David Magnus.
