Look what happened. We don't snatched your chain. This is the only thing. I appreciate that Golfer gets on a new show and Spencer reckless that he is immediately just starts bashing left and right every chance he gets to keep Godfrey down. That's my the again. All I am here to do is to keep the graduates of oldness from succeeding in life because I'm the one that's doing that he pronounced it old missed did y'all hear that old old? I did Lord that disrespect? I am Spencer Hall. Joining me as always is my co-host Jason Kirk said Jackson. Hi. So as Canon now that split zone is the only college football podcast and we are the only. PODCAST. We're the only I'm you know what? Maybe it's time to class up? Do we just rabbit. I think that's what's taking place. So. That's the next or maybe we just moved up to being the only football podcast. Like that it or do we just jump rank completely? Yeah. We're way past that. Already split duo is more of like an an Algan round table for the ear buds. I can go with that. Let's go ahead and. I want to get straight to the most important news of the week because. We're actually already kind of in an actual football week. There are games that will happen and we could preview those but I kind of want to look at the big picture. and. I'm going to look at. Actual. Football Week Do you want to tell everybody what you thought. It was yesterday five I thought it was week five. No, you said three. And then you work your way up to five and it is week six. Everybody else our want to keep everybody else surprised of where we are in Spencer. Time. Do. You know how awesome it is being completely off the calendar like I am being torn stuck in time. Yeah. I do. It's. It's wonderful. So I'm looking at the standings and I'm seeing three Oh two oh, one and one. Oh, no four no I think any number between zero and Four is fine, and then if you an attack on other numbers to bring it up to six or let's say seven, let's call it eight. Any number between zero eight I think is fine. Thank you. I'm content to let Spencer decide what week it is for the rest of the year. You got me on that and I was helping my kid with math today and they're doing that thing where they have like number grades and then moving knowing there like what could equal ten and I was like this is very challenging. Wait then play Sudoku. Siddiqui. One way which they're doing number theory. Right another one would be trying to get me to use a calendar. Something that I'm pretty sure Mo- second graders could embarrass me on so. Thanks. I appreciate the support. Jason. For being totally unstuck in time. Yeah now. So if you were to get into a calendar battle with a second grader. How do those rounds unfold like? Calendar skills what I'm trying to picture which of those like a battle? No we IT'S A it's a five day. It's like a cricket match. It's like a test match right? It's five days long in every single day we up and we have to say what today day the time is. Right right I got the second graders are minus one thousand and. said. Do you want to know why you always need a second grader as an accomplice if you're going to do a heist or some kind of shenanigans because you're going to need to lose a weapon, you're going to need to lose some equipment. You're going to need to lose some evidence. Do you know who can lose something more effectively than any other creature known to man a second grader? A second grader will drop a lego straight in the floor and it'll evaporate. Like hit like seriously like it hit the flu just pulls. Gone Harry Potter. FINISHED UTILIZE I've watched I. Need you to put the put the nail file and the glass cutter. On your under nightstand that's where we need it. Right guarantee it's gone. It doesn't exist anymore. Law Financing Shit. I've watched my son drops something on the ground I have tracked on the ground and I have watched it completely separate from my vision just. Gone. The thing that the thing that lost of course, we'll be something of value and completely. On findable just dislike like I need that special lego piece. That's approximately the size of a tic, TAC. Oh, it's. It would to another dimension. Completely. So yeah. Get a second grader on your crew. Am I telling you to take your local second grader and make him commit or at least an accessory to a major crime? No because guess he's GonNa find out about if a second graders getting rid of the evidence nobody. It'll be gone forever. There's nothing that they could pick up in zoom school that they really couldn't learn in. America's. Crime. Farm system. Through like crime for. What's the? What's the literary thing? It's not alliteration where the words end in the same sound. Near rhyme ask was alliteration but for verbs it is for vowels okay right. Out that's what I meant. God words. have. Meanings. Yeah farm crime. Farm. Crime is farm crime is by the way the most under-exploited true crime genre. We don't do enough farm crime because I did read an article. There are still cattle rustlers donkey arson. Lewis. Farm crime. Donkeys at least appreciate that. thinking. Like. Talk. Yeah. That's how you get. Mad. What what a fucking way to go respect. Again. Just appending farm like words to the end of crimes. CAL fire in a cow is going to go I. AM put a sweet cow why would you do that? If you set a donkey on fire, it's going to be like, yeah, I'd do it too. Yeah. That donkey is like sickos looking in the window. I wish I could do that but I don't have hands. We do actually have an important football story that I'M GONNA share few. It's. Relevant to everything I think we are as podcast and I think as a nation at our best. From the Detroit. News. And Dateline is Tober six today publish it for Seventeen PM. Michigan kicks off the abbreviated big ten football season at Minnesota on October. Twenty. Fourth. But Jim brandstatter who handles the radio play by play analyst, John Deere door from the broadcast crew. Won't be there instead they'll be empty. Michigan Stadium Calling the game off television monitors. I can't think. Of A happier story in two thousand twenty that Dan. Dear door for Jim branstetter finally getting. The run of the place themselves getting the ideal getting the dream getting to call. A game as bald orphan sackler. Our Beloved College Football ads. Alone in Michigan Stadium started watching the game on TV. Bulb Orphan sackler. All right. Oh. If feels good to get into that warm again. Yes, my favorite broadcast team and all of college football. branstetter endeared who are valued IMG colleagues. Yes. ARE VALUED IMG colleagues. s colleagues just as much as we value them. They have. Definitely. Heard of. The hat that was associated with the thing we said about the thing they say we can go that far. We can't the their one of their daughters I told listen to the show if she's still listening I'm really sorry for her but also hello. I'm really sorry but also, hello. I. It didn't sultry until you said it. Also cannot wait to just hear these two guys openly mused about watching from an empty Michigan Stadium. Of the place you want set up cornhole. I'm just put it right here. Each one shows up with his own individual crock. Pot. Already. Worn 'cause there's going to be distance, right? They can't just the original idea had was you know they have a crock pot of Chili between them and just like a trash bag of corn chips and they can. As. They talk. All you worked in a movie theater right you've seen the size bags that they put popcorn and to move it to the satellite concession stands. It's like. Remember chips. And dipping it out. But also that's a little bit unsanitary were still I hope in a place like Michigan trying to practice proper covid protocols. So plexiglass divider separate. CROCK pots. And separate bags of chips at our our precious boys will be all all warm and toasty and safe. Enjoy this though when you said garbage bag full of corn chips I immediately thought well, it has to be one of the clear ones because the black ones a trash bag, but the classic food related one that's the clear one. I. Don't know why. That's my old movie theater employees being like that's how you know it's food. You put the food in the garbage bag that's clear and then it's not garbage so that it's clear that it's food. See there's also a potential time enough at last scenario here where like One of them drops the crock pot as it gets there and the national anthem is concluding and he looks up at the camera. There's chill everywhere. He has nothing to dip chips in and he just goes. That's not fair. I've been waiting for Michigan Stadium to be empty all my life and now no Stands to run those Goddamn crossing routes. Fourth forth all across sections thirty four. I'm. GonNa Watch this game start wait. Do we know? Does it say in the article how we can take of the Michigan feed while this is happening do we have to go serious Serb? Do you know? How do we take in our beloved? IMG COLLEAGUES DURING THE GAME You can subscribe to their Game Day up the Michigan Game Day. APP. or tune in you can listen to the Michigan Sports Network from Learfield Img College Sorry I wasn't quite listening because there's a smart of. Brian. Sadder. Saying happy Halloween that I. wanted to send you guys and I was clipping. What's? Coming Yeah just. Yeah. Just put that right in after this when we're done with that. Just pasted over wherever you like just just. Loop it actually over this audience tween can that be when we're talking about something that we're not supposed to be talking about. This is like a hot. Yeah that could be our hockey. We have a lot of shows between now and Halloween now that we're at two shows a week, which we should probably talk about in a minute. Hey but every time between now and Halloween that we have to bleep somebody I mean we tried to kill Henry Kissinger so I don't know what we believe at this point but we we should put our boy Jim in there. Holy we I I. Really cannot wait for this to happen and cannot encourage you enough. Not just doing this because obviously their workers far now but because. I like listening to the radio feed anyway of games if I can and offense if it syncs up reasonably well, one weird side effect of streaming games. Now, the delay on the radio now almost perfectly matches up with the delay on whatever streaming service I'm using to watch football. So. Now, I have to adjust even less than ever before. So thank you delays of technology moving backwards. If you could move backwards at the same time I won't have to tweak the radio slash TV sink all that much. But of all of the radio feeds you could listen to really can't encourage Michigan enough. What trump? Speaking, of tweaks technology, do you WanNa talk about why we are being beamed to our listeners for the second time this week? Oh we are being being to our listeners because we are going to do. A mail bag. Episode, a kind of unusual mailbox. Back. I would argue the only correct mailbag. In the purest sense of the term on God's Green. Internet. So Jason. Typically how does the mail bag episode work? On our show or in on like functional shows, I mean functional shows that do a lesser job by doing things correctly on half asked shows that strive to be the full cast. Typically. involve. A number of questions between three and Who knows ten twenty? Somewhere, around that and. Usually, called a male's bag. Rice a mail bag what a disturbing collision of words that and I don't think there's anything we. All. You're the one who said sack stat or whatever Yeah Brand brands. Or Hey what is a mailbag episode after all but sack time? Oh Wow also, so about our football uncles one last thing. So the traditional football uncle. The social distancing thing. All right. They're. They're not really all that in on it they took the guideline as like. Well, fuck that we're going to smash our faces together whereas branstetter endear door if I believe enough in them to believe that they view this as licensed to finally distance themselves as much as possible. The Big House is a big house and I believe these fellows will take full advantage of that. You know. Love your buddy can barely see. It's awesome. The opposite sites. LISSI INDAC- this. This is the proper respect mansion shoulder his good friend, Hey stadium are you still in here? I not spend been both have families is it so bad that I imagine them sleeping in twin beds? No. Room Luke, burt, and Ernie. That's IT and they sleep in pajamas that they button up the way to the top button. All the way do. Anything Weird BIRT's. In. EARNED EARN DARN door dern doors earn Ernie. dernie. You know what I'm going to. Talk to this. Don't blame the. Saturday. What. An excess. What an ecstatic vision of having of the two of them have cookies and milk with little nightcaps on before bad. They had their pajamas or striped and the nightcaps are long employees. And they have the Michigan, the Michigan Stripe on them an picturing like full flap eared like a quail hunting hat. I. Like northern exposure style like this. Just, the sleepytime bare but with Dan dear doors head. If, you could go ahead and the only shop that we recognize in this. House. Frankly. I wanted to photoshop that and send that to And send it to we have a lot of accounts. Mood, crew account again sure. Godfrey tell him to send it to us. Launder it, launder it through. So here's what you have to do. You have to get Godfrey to forward this meme along to the Moon Count All right and you will win maybe we'll give you re tweeted something. Sure. You'll get one one reason as a treat actually dino what I have. Do you know what I have that? I can send the winner of this contest. Via our dearly departed sponsor cow bucker r.i.p I have a spanking new never been worn clemson colored Zach time hat I will. Personally mail this to the winner. Okay. This is good. This is good. By the way one of the best weeks of all times that sleepytime Barron somebody going light Joe, he fucked up off that sleepytime. Showing the bear like aw. The longer you. Sorry Continue Doco ahead? Like the about going to the celestial seasonings facebook page. On them like. Something like fucked up happened and and none of them care and ends with like very difficult to rile that fan base. Off seen this to gone off the sleepytime smart. The T- The T- culture not not gossip, but literally T- apparently, it's about as tranquil as it gets online. This is this is just one step forward towards becoming an old Frisbee guy like an old California I got. What do you do? I run in short shorts I shop organic grocery stores. I protest a lot I have. I have a lot of fishing shirts but they're colorful fishing shirts. And I'm gone off that sleepytime t ninety, nine pm Bam. I'm out gone off it. We have. Let's see. I believe we have at one point Ryan Nanny may drop in y'all. Should look at our sleepytime bear honestly time for now the question about the timing of that. Yeah. I've been on for like five minutes. Okay. Okay. If you've been waiting like double Dutch. Polite waiting to be introduced like like a visiting. Royal. I was also. I was also reading up on geared orphan brandstatter and the only fact I really want to share with you. Is that their wives names are going to make sure you get this right because it's important. Wait wait you WANNA. Guess I I want to say Janine and Janine. That's I guess wait. No Denise. Janine Yeah Okay are we all get our this sure. They're not gonNA guess they're both Marjorie. ooh I'M GONNA go I'M GONNA go Meghan Lisa. I, guess I guess Jason was closest. Dan Is married to Debbie dear DORF. And Jim is married to a woman named Robbie who I believe. was like a local broadcaster in Detroit. For a long time and that's where they met. Robbie Tim Robbie Timmons who graduated from Ohio State. University. Fight it. James. Carville doesn't know Shit. So you know you're telling me that it addition to all of his other many fine qualities are boy is also a diplomat. That's right. They met in one, thousand, nine, hundred, seventy, five while anchoring TV newscasts together at. An NBC affiliate. In This. Should have been about. It should have been. Superior. Rather. I also learned that Jim has written two books tales from Michigan Stadium. and. Tales from Michigan Stadium volume to. One of them would be about war but this is the closest thing. So it's interesting that it is not tales of Michigan. Footballer Tales of watching football is this like I got in a fight in the parking lot. Or maybe just random shit that happened like one time drop McKee's in the toilet had to get my friend Franken, there with the snake pulled it out pretty big day. Old Dave next to me farted so huge. Open the press. No a squirrel got into the pipes. My in my throat. Own. Damn game. Fortunately it was Iowa. That squirrels a hell of a guy. I gotTA. Tell you. We go ice fishing now twice a year. Selah. That's squirrels. Name was Jim Trussell. I I would rather have a squirrel living in my matrix then. Call Lion's games for thirty. One years s Jim brandstatter did Dan Oh, my God it's eat the toughest man alive. He did this from. Nineteen eighty-seven until July twenty eighteen and I want you to think how much the world has changed between Nineteen eighty-seven, which is not far from when holly and Jason and I were born in very far Jason. Spencer. was born. WHO Two thousand eighteen like Like we all. Basically became the people we are today the world changed in radical ways that nobody could I seen and the lions the lions remained exactly the same. Old. So. All right. All right. All right two thousand, eight Detroit Lions Record member that. Sixteen year that you're. Three and nine and. Jim brandstatter called every bit of it. He called five straight wolverines losses amid sixteenth straight lions losses. Wow. The man is unstoppable I. Were suggesting that the Lions and Michigan's we're like had some kind of Elliott and e t relationship. Would you when you hurt I, hurt. I hope Jimmy instead or caused the crisis in two thousand and eight because he was so sick of watching these. Barcode Altech, the whole market. So I'd have to watch. Goddamn crap with sincere apologies to the estate of Langston Hughes that man's soul has seen. Sucky rivers. I. Really. Tell you. Go ahead. Just real quick. The two, thousand, eight lions schedule. The. By Week was week four, which means. Thirteen straight weeks with losses. Okay. I'm done looking at their schedule. Wow. Maybe go get it together after the by week maybe it'll clear out no everything is going to be different now. I would like I would like by the way to say that Jim branstetter and maybe the smartest person ever associated with the lions because. Everyone else. who was with the lines for a substantial amount of time quit bid season and quit suddenly share right everybody. So Barry Sanders, Calvin Johnson Bobby Ross, a number of different players have all point. Soon to Matt Patricia. They're going to be like, where do you go? He bugged down? Went to Canada. Or something crossing the border on foot. You'll team twelve, I don't. Know Shielding T. Week if you look at me like week eleven and you see Matt Patricia on the Patriots sideline with no explanation like. Dad just let me back in. Seal team twelve by the way, it's twelve pack that that's why. The number of players who quit like a number of lions luminaries all quit mid season Ryan please remind us when did JIM branstetter look up at the calendar and say I can't do this shit before July it looks like it was July. Correct. His the smartest man because he didn't even get to the season before he was like. I could feel the gorgeous gut rising I can't do this anymore. Jesus. Spending all summer. Every kept he kept it for Boone against summer because he got. Jim It's important to listen to your body all time. To the suburb was like, no no I'M GONNA go back out on the boat and not fear walking into whatever I have to call on Sundays I'm out. Starts in the. This is this is actually I think he knew what was coming because week one of twenty, eight to yeah week one of two, thousand eighteen. The. The Detroit Lions hosted. The New York jets. and. They lost forty eight to seventeen. Who My God I'm emotionally exhausted from thinking about I. Love that. We don't even really have to know what year that is to know that. That's terrible. That is. Yeah. That SAM darnold rookie. Year. That, Sam Darnold. That Sam Darnold in Sam darnold first game he went to Detroit. And he the jets beat the lions by thirty one points. Mean there was a moment when all of us perhaps including those of us on this show who pay attention to the NFL that we said, Hey, the Sam Darnold, think's GonNa work probably do that for an entire Sunday? No. darcus just before it goes black Jason Your your premise. Your premises based on the idea that we all decided to watch jets lines game. We would certainly see the score. Oh, wait I'm sorry it was on Monday night football. Probably. Off. Of His game is that at one point early in the third quarter, the Lions tied the game and then throughout the rest of the third quarter, the jet scored thirty one unanswered points. I don't see anything weird about. Oh. You need to know about the lions is this like we celebrate Thanksgiving by honoring America by putting a franchise it's like not only known for decades of mediocrity at this point in wasting to at least two of the greatest position players in the history of the League. But in addition to that, they are owned by family that at one point within the century. Openly supported the American. Nazi party. You. Look around Buddy how insane? Hours how insane we talking here. So we're talking failures and Nazis that does line up well with like the original Thanksgiving story. That's true. That's true. I'm not saying it's not America but era, we salute America by giving you the Detroit. Lions. God. Thank you. Thank you for this dose of the Plague Dino who they play this year on Thanksgiving. Don't say the chiefs. The jets now although although holly Washington football team just play on Thanksgiving. Aw. They're gonNa such as it is. That's progress. No. Yeah it's. It's a good choice. Detroit is hosting the Houston Texans No. Yes. Yes. This is terrific NFL. Coach at that time by Dan Quinn. That's right. I Adore College football so much because we have a guy like bill O'Brien. Penn state's like you know what Standup Guy Pretty great guy he goes to the NFL it's a completely different universe. They're like toilet man absolute bog stirs. Waste of space. Everyone at Penn State's like he's pretty good. We like that guy never went to Houston's like turn him into cal feed. Throw him in with the pigs. HOMEFIELD APPAREL DOT COM brings time. Just let it go. In comfortable t-shirt fashions. Up This week is it Florida State Week. The timing. Hey, hang on hang on gator boy. You get to talk about this enough I'm going to turn. This particular moment over to our other gator alum on the podcast who had a really interesting point to make about the origins of homefield apparel and how this really is like coming home. So. Homefield. You know when when it when we first founded at least one of the appeals of of this brand was that they had smaller schools schools that were hard to find other places schools that were really interesting like it was kind of like digging through a cool record crate and you know we've leave loved seeing them grow and we'd love seeing them add the pits and the Michigan State's and the Auburn's of the world, but it's just nice that they're like, okay. Let's go back to like that classic Nisha. Small. Not even like are they going to play in a bowl game? They're eligible for a bowl game. It's not how it works here. They're about their about like you know the small craft of football you've never heard of. An and Cam Watch and that's Florida state and that's what I love about it is that you get these classic like. Oh Florida State Jacksonville state rivalry game cool like let's launch an apparel section based on that alone like that game I love to see that every every year to seize this the year. When you know the knowles can finally can finally get the right side of that rivalry and this was, and that's why I think there's great things ahead for Mike norval at the two level. How Really And thank you Jason Spencer for holding space for that I. Just thought that was really valuable. Welcome now. I. Mean You you know. or coming back Starter Jackets Nazis. Incredibly fashionable right now, I'm just thinking of nineties things right Gotcha, nineties fashions are just popping up all over the place and. What is more nineties fashionable than a Florida State University. Football. Shirt. You will be the coolest person of nine, thousand, nine, hundred, ninety, three, and therefore the coolest person of twenty twenty. I will tell you this that if you really. And I say this with all sincerity are Florida State Fan. Because, we're all not perfect and you can feel it your bones. You Really WanNa rep it. When will you have a better opportunity to demonstrate your absolute and total loyalty to the program that by buying a Florida state t shirt right now in this program system right now in this moment when Florida State is currently Subterranean in terms of quality and in terms of outlook when you are below the water table and looking up and go and man it's real dark right now. What better time to go ahead and rep hard for your school and show everybody that you're not the die hard. But you're the survive hardest that you're the one. Who's going to take to these streets in a Florida state shirt and say, yeah, sure we just lost seventy two to nothing to wake forest but I'm still here. I can't be killed for that's score. The score to be to come yeah. So FSU Fan you're you're familiar with this each week, you will be the greatest sad fan name of the week that is your role as an Fsu fan. When you appear in that meme Shirtless Guy Reading a book it's been done the glitter guys been done good or guys wear masks. That's amazing. They're the only people. Tallahassee who do the last survivors del Hassi would gloat or guys. Do, you want to be in that mean frozen in time forever when you get blasted off the field by Virginia. Do. You WanNa look your best. Do you want to do it in a comfortable that he? I think you do I think that's the right choice the other. The other thing about I haven't seen and I'll be honest I don't WanNa see it. Don't send it to me Connor and I haven't seen what the collection looks like, but I'm betting it's not going to be plastered with large all caps. Like raw phraseology that looks really stupid when your team is getting what you like. It doesn't you don't want to wear a Florida state odd. Concord. Shirt. Team is losing thirty, six ten. Virginia Tech. That sucks. So just this way you get support your team, you get to wear something very comfortable and you don't have to walk around saying I, don't understand what words mean. Yeah also, by the way, would you call it in the stands hitting an open tank and nitrous right? One nobody's GonNa get on you because you're wearing a mask right? That is true. What kind of mask. That's what I want by the way I want somebody in a spanking, crisp clean, flattering like maybe you've been going to the gym maybe you got them traps pop and I guarantee the fit on a home field well, tailored lack of portion shirts. It's GonNa look fantastic and it's going to feel fantastic. You know what else is going to feel great hitting that tank and nitrous loosened by forty on air on national TV MOM's going to be so proud that you chose the drug. That's like vintage retro season. If dente dentists make great money, how'd you fluence of laying kiffin Ole Miss? Of Kentucky, game did, we not get somebody in full gasmask vape rig at that contest? Yet. We could still. I feel like we just missed our best shot sip guy who social distances by making his immense vape rick his surroundings like he takes up the other more like the bad guy from Mad Max Syria, road with. Joe But for Ole Miss. Listeners out there if you are if you are vape bane. Go ahead and sir. Photo of your pain vape rig and A. Serbian Egypt take that off it would be very influenced Would not be very based. Anyway use offer code full cast off. Your order at Homefield Apparel, and if you're a seminal fan, you're GONNA WANNA keep that extra money because Florida state will be hitting you up for it. When they're paying I don't know Josh Hypol- by out. Either never get enough credit for being the mean one Ryan I'm sorry yeah. Okay. Now, I'm just hearing in my head Flimflam Bam all. Are you ready? I wait until the nineteen eighties with. Colonel Raby because he doesn't like quitters. I saw the light. Do you Elliott charge. It's almost football they never. Every game we don't feel in charge. But by the way, I cannot wait I, can't wait just one little note before we get into our mailbag question here I cannot wait to watch Ole Miss, Alabama this weekend because there's no chance that old Mrs GonNa beat Alabama but they're gonNA, freak him out for about three or four minutes to this game and all that. GonNa come just flooding back to babba fed veins eleven quarterback on the field. Levin quarterbacks on the field. What I picture is lanes playbook is is game plan for this week is eighty trick plays. All right. But then there's five regular plays and he's GonNa. Do those five plays while Nick Sabin just sits there and boils I know this little shit? And GonNa Kinda SNORT and snicker. The whole time to. Lane looks down at the game plan and goes like t that's a good one and then he calls the play in and it's a it's a draw in. This faster is. He knows plays coming. Home and then they never happen i. hope the. Coaching version of I'm not touching you i. hope audibles are all things that lane knows from personal experience are eating. At Nick Sabin like you just see the quarterback get down and be like replace the tile in the half bathroom replaced the tires and the half past and Nick Sabin Oh meaning to do that for months. I mean all the calls are things. Nick Sabin hates the quarterback just gets out there and yells lane kiffin. I don't know if you saw. But in the Green Bay Atlanta Game Aaron. Rodgers. Called out. Ask the hard county. Hard like a fucking POK mon.. Right Deep. Low Pass. I really hope. I really hope it. Lane Kiffin makes Matt Corral to that just like hey yellow what you're gonNa do before you do it right like bootleg. Pass. charging. Charge. Like I'll seven-year-olds play football, right? Yeah. Look announcing their own plays except if it's old miss met girls going to have to go intentional grounding. Being. Game killing intercept. is so point. The Kevin Sorbo offense running. Re Read Your cues out loud man. not this whole like Ooh I gotta do forty eight lines and code like Jon? GRUDEN. Does it's a west coast offense call no man read the script literally read the script. I. Like this because then when Michigan's blown off the field lane will just be like they had all the I mean frankly am surprised they didn't score more may maybe if we hadn't tipped them off on every play on purpose. Thirty eight but. We gave him the media's like, yeah. We should drop Alabama in the rankings, but that's what Nick Sabin once. So really works all in his favor was the entire offensive line out there with their jock straps on. This is really I don't even think that's legal arts are. Just. Terrible. Shotgun snap. Stab. This week's question we've chosen one it's from at Sedna underscore five one. And The question is. What's the best to support for somebody totally new to college football Note please define best in whatever way you please. Do and I do around of recommendation, we can do a round table we can. We can workshop this I have I can start Because we've done this before right when we picked out a team for Dan Devine. Yes we've done it. We gave it west. Virginia. Sorry. Sorry sorry down. But that specific person and this is this is less tailored more universal, right? Yeah and I'm going to try to get it right and as right as I can. Like this show so that will be different. I want to do this I want to do it for somebody who? I don't want to assign them. I don't want to give them A. Task of rooting for a team that's going to be perennially bad. So I. I can't do that. I can't say, Oh, you should definitely be vanderbilt fan because being a vanderbilt fan they lonely hard road. The highs aren't very high and the lows are consistent abundant and very, very low. So I can't being of Empire Hunter Very. Lonely. Van Helsing of college. Football. Basis. Right that's where the V and that's V in the logo is for it's me announcing is now vanderbilt. commodores because they're sailing to hungry to notorious fan fire. Sailings from Nashville. Sailing from Nashville. Which Vanderbilt Fan would do y'all we're sailing down the comfort and it's going to be great. Now. So I can't do that for you and I want to give a team that's going to give you a broad a good taste. Of a broad selection of college football's color peculiarities and. So I want to get a team that sees cool shit and visits a number of different places that are all unique and interesting. So I I have a team that know isn't a conference where there's a lot of that but they also play some out of conference games. So we definitely need that so not Florida. Not. Florida Florida's out because we do not travel. Right. So who am I going to give you if I was going to give you somebody? Okay. Well, you might travel you want to be consistent but. I'm not even going to put the pressure championships on you. Want the travels. So locally speaking. I was going to go ahead and say this. I think if somebody Ohio state. Ohio state might be a pretty good call. For a team to follow because I do disagree with this but okay, go ahead. Okay. So they do schedule out of conference pretty well. They usually end up with marquee game like every other year. So they get a good home at home they still scheduled those. They win pretty consistently you will get a national title every now and then you'll get conference titles pretty consistently. You won't necessarily have the most interesting things to watch in your own stadium if there's a few things, right there's a little bit of color there, but you're going to get to go around the big ten and see some interesting stuff. You have a great rivalry in terms of a rivalry with Michigan and there's a lot of you. Really thought he was going to say. I really thought he was going to sleep. You'RE GONNA say Michigan State. I was really hedging because I couldn't figure out I actually did a triple move because I was like well, I could play fake it and then go to Penn state then I thought it's funnier if I just say Michigan 'cause Y'all, we're going to say Penn state right. You're right. You got. Very galaxy very nicely. I am in the Lotus position with cosmic energy from Pore Right. That's so I think Ohio states have pretty good call because also there's a lot of you. You'll be really visible for the very, very basic fan not the Sickos like US looking at the window and going. Sunbelt Wednesday. I disagree with. This. Conclusion. Okay. I think there's in vacuum. What you're saying makes sense but college football is not experienced in a vacuum and if you decide if we decide for this stranger, Hey, you're an Ohio state fan. Now we have now baptize them in to a subculture. That may not fit their sense of themselves, their goals for who they want to be. A good person right and now you said you're like Buckeye Guy You you're the kind of person who would show up to coaches funeral. You don't know and sign the card. I think one of them did I don't remember which one. That would. Know that would be that would be that would be Buckeye. Oh Dear God he yeah. He showed up uninvited to some some earl earl earl. Earl Bruce's, funeral yeah. Listen I'm not even mad I crave that level of self possession now to be fair obviously Buckeye guys like an extreme end but think still like. I don't know I don't I don't think Ohio. State fandom is for everyone and it's not for most people and that's why thank God. That's why you only get like late night commercials for it. Does it does Ohio state fandom advertise on the SEC network? Tactical Fad dome. Yeah I think like I'm thinking you want something that's going to be a little more like. Have a little bit less of a stigma I think is what I'm saying like not that A. State is a bad thing, but it's very well defined thing and that doesn't necessarily fit you in the same way that like being Miami Fan is a very well defined thing we're being you know. So I would say I'm leaning in a very different direction and I'm thinking APP state is an interesting way for somebody to come in because you're still going to get. You're going to get a good an interesting football team to root for. You'RE NOT GONNA get the playoff hunt in it but like. GonNa be honest that should sucks like in in Ohio states case especially, it's not like making the playoff makes you happy half the time? It just makes you frustrated when you convince the world is turned against you half time you don't score any points and that's the other half, right so like I don't think rooting for one of the biggest of the big boys is all that gratifying to somebody coming in brand new. So if you're upstate, you get the benefit of were good team. They also schedule pretty well so you'll get to see some interesting You, could see some interesting non conference opponents. You play in a conference that you can win that you should win frequently. And that means you're going to get to go to bowl. Games. against the string opponents and like Ohio state, you also have a rivalry with Michigan so I think that's a lonely path man. That's for the beginning to. The poll, it's a lonely world look. Too Far in the other direction but you're like I don't know man you're basically saying. CH- somebody with if if somebody just popped out of the with them and you're like you're in Ohio state fan now it's like well okay. Where where do I get the Tattoo whereas my accordion? I mean, you know most of the world's pretty basic. That's that's it. That's all you've got. To occasion occasionally, I try to speak normal and it doesn't come out of my mouth well, but I think it's accurately said that thinks It's very accurate. Here's my here's my final argument against Ohio State. Think about all of the things that you have to be mad about if you are an Ohio state fan. You Get mad about so many like it. You're you're right. Yeah. Your you're route offer a list of grievances. Yeah. You're you're essentially Spencer you're telling this is like being born Catholic like, yes. The resources are there yes the history is there but you're going to be in such a bad mood all the time. You don't have to know anything somebody's like Catholics. No anything no. Stan meal you're out before five minutes there see Ohio State football run run pass that same thing that's army football out and forty five minutes. That's run run run run run run run run run. Run. Run. Run. Run, run run run run. I. I, think I think you are putting somebody into a box. They may not be comfortable with and I think we should find something that is a little more. Welcoming and has like has more room for for an individual to get in and not have to be okay okay. Okay Mr I'm bringing hiccup, sell it to the barbecue was. I'm sorry Hickama Salad. It's more like never mind I was GONNA. Make a Hick joke but you're equating Appalachian fucking state with Hickam Salad? No, I'm saying. How many of our listeners are going to know what you mean when you say Hickam because it starts with a J.. Listen hipster the pull of Hickam Salad joke. itself a hipster move extremely from once I know for Wednesday I. Speak I'm saying fancy lad I'm trying to translate to the like the Common Volk here. No you're not. Not with the salad do you know how many people are state fans and our just normal basic folks telling you a lot of But they don't have the luxury like they are still of the community with the people who will go out and be like hold up a sign because urban Meyer's been suspended for two and a half games like those are Ohio state fans to you get lumped in. lumberton. Lump all, those lumps. Disagree clearly. Yeah, yeah. So we we we Jason Holly who would who would prefer to tell I I can go I feel like I have A. Few and I think it depends on your level of commitment. Because Ohio. State commitment you gotta you gotTa worry about football three, hundred, sixty, five days of. Fan. through an APP state fan. Maybe it's down a few months if you're Michigan Fan. Still gotTA worry about it but it's a different kind of worry. Central. Arkansas which we have mentioned several times on the show. I think had a good case going into the game against North, Dakota, state North Dakota State's only game of the year. To have been participating in the AFC s national title game based on being the very rare. FCS team capable of holding a winning record at any point the season they were two in one. That's insane. And Central. Arkansas, it's GonNa keep going. So. If you like low stakes football. And a team that just. Delighted to be here, Central Arkansas if he's taken up a level to the G. Five level SMU is very fun very good for no and. You know in a in a functioning sport make may run at a playoff bid but. Could be a terror in a in the New Year six bowl if we happen to make it that far. I would we could go all the way to Byu but their way too good. So let's dial it down and go with Ole Miss. Thought. I thought you were going to say Texas. No. We're just going to omit we've talked enough tonight about small schools that are because ole miss number five in yards per play. Very exciting, right? That's pretty fun. At the same time, Ole miss in yards per play allowed is gross scrolls last. Every play in an oems game averages basically eight yards no matter who is holding the football. Wow. Numbers. In Alabama is on the schedule next, let's bring up some numbers. How Jalen Waddell have one hundred, forty yard touchdown pass exception Jesus as an research. Yeah, he ran. He ran clear to the gift shop. By the way I was just I just WanNa say Jason is the most sadistic among us because you're letting stranger get themselves exposed to old this? Well, I mean, I don't expect. Now. This is this is herd mentality brother. I don't think it's about like adjusting jigsaw. Jason Jigsaw like, no no no. No, it's fun. All they have to do is reach the sauce across the room and the other people will die thus saving them Jason. Jigsaw. Kirk well, it's less about we're not. We're not advising you to attend the University of Mississippi or becoming like lifelong fan. You know it's just watching Ole Miss Games and creating about what happens it's to be stupid shit. He doesn't want to watch that I think they only have one addendum. First of all. I think I, agree with Jason's more than I, agree with Spencer's I will point out that by picking smu. And by me picking up upstate, we have both picked homefield schools and Spencer, did not because Spencer's partner. Yeah. We're the scar drivers who are doing that doing the proper job during the press conference. That's right. Shouts out to mountain dew thing Like errands rent to own. The. Only addendum I'll add to Jason's is that by going with SMU and then leveling up ole miss this whoever this mystery fan is, you better have a cocaine budget and you'd better stick to. Do you like to party. What do you mean by party buddy? Also. That was strictly in terms of conferences because. The ratings? Ratings. We have those. This is one way in which Ole miss is not quite enough. What do you think the see is foreign busy absent p sap stands for resort puff, buddy. Norton Party what are the lines of the weekend? Let's Take. A look at the. Line. Oh. That's is so energetic all. I. Get there really lines on Sunday. They come out behind. Versus fishing because he's sweating through. On that line is going to move here come the big money hard. because. Now check the Internet for price discrepancies that I exploit I. I've been hammering those lines then Sunday. I just love Jason, the pusher with all bits. Now, one year won't hurt you won't be hooked. No, it'd be fine. There we go. Yeah. Well I don't think I have a less coped choice. But I shouldn't really come as a surprise to anyone. I would argue for this mystery fan whether you're. Getting into college football because the regular sports that you like to watch or not on television or because you're just home more often than you were the in the before times but. I would argue that in Tony Twenty especially and for a lot of national college football fans who are overburdened with worldly wealth to be able to shuttle back and forth all these games and whatnot. Picking a college football team cold isn't so much about the football as it is about the experience and I speak from a little bit of experience myself because I went through very briefly a stent or I was trying to pick a baseball team in two, thousand seven and I consulted a friend of mine who was a baseball writer I had just moved to Los Angeles at all I knew was that I didn't want to be an angels person. because those those people are mall people and they terrify me. And she said well, okay. You need to consider a few basic parameters. You want a national brand like it doesn't have to be a UCLA or dame. But if you're going to be a fan of this team, it needs to be something that you don't have to shell out for the God Tier Cable Package to get right you want it to be fairly easy entry. into being able to watch this team on a regular basis, you also WanNa fan base that is not going to Piss and Moan at you being sidewalk alum because you want people who are just happy to join the party you guys with me so far yeah hundred percent. Okay. Like they don't. They don't have to be unready. You don't WanNa like Seidel up to a you know a group of just placid Boston. College fans like, Hey, guys what's happening? Would anyone like Vegan but You know nor do you want to as Ryan said jumped directly into the deep end with the Miami fans because a cocaine budget and be? That's very, very, very, very specific and you want to start with a more generalized kind of good time fan before you move into these more niche groups to that end, I would suggest to teams and I'm astonished. One of you guys hasn't brought them up so far the first one of these boise state. If you are if you are into. I if you were into rooting for an underdog, here is a set of grudges that you can adopt. That are while they're not necessarily friendly because Lord knows boys he has been fucked over enough times. They're easy to root for right. It's not known for being a particularly toxic swath of human beings. Their Games are on late at night and when you're rooting against something bad that is happening to Boise. You're generally rooting against the larger power structures of college football, which can only be good for you as a human being on balance. the second team if you are interested in a team that technically could though probably won't play for a national championship, but also is not going to get too worked up about that because again, this is supposed to be fun. Brothers and sisters what can I do but invite you to consider Arizona State? It's good. That's Yeah. If I only my only tweak on that would be PAC twelve network is kind of hard to find sometimes sometimes that's a blessing cows. California Arizona State tends to end up on these late night games on the big networks. Yeah. It's Also has real. Day Nineteen. Other Games are also thirteen to eleven and who doesn't like A. Thriller. I think there is also chaos answer still here. I think you could just say Auburn, you could just say. Auburn Fan because that way at the very least like everything we've described as sort of like. Trying to give people a pathway that we think will be predictable. But what if we just abandon that and said the whole point of doing this is that your getting involved in something that you can't control that changes wildly. Week to week, and that is often inexplicable and like if you're going to feel that way, just go be an Auburn, Fan. There's some evidence for this because Stephen Fry. In his series on America goes to the Iron Bowl when it's hosted at Auburn, he's completely taken by the experience overwhelmed just a very welcoming day face paint him and he's like Oh they have lemonade and is so completely. Floored by the Auburn experience that I could see this working on a total outsider but I will also say I think Arizona State for the outsider would be a very compelling experience because if I took somebody who nothing about America and immediately dropped them in Tempe Arizona on Game Day? I think they would get the entire manual to this nation in about three pages, worth of very concise and accurate information. What? HAVE WE COMPROMISE House divided Auburn Arizona State Dorman. I mean that just screams. In. Pharmaceuticals Right. But then thing happened in, you're not allowed to do that anymore. I, love Jesus adderall. I was GONNA. Say I love Jesus. But I snort a little. Lower back to smu shit. I the way I have yet to I have yet to think of a better pick than SMU. Yeah. For All of our all of our over reason I think i. I don't know I kind of like selling people at old miss because what's more American than? Hey, just make a down payment on this. Now you're in for Life Oh. I mean, where where Auburn has the edge here in this is that If you jump directly into Auburn and claim to be a lifelong fan, they will know you are bullshitting but because they are so wrapped up in their we're just churched folks they have to be nice to you sure also also super super boom-and-bust to right like. Doing this year. Buddy couldn't be better. Two years later it's like. A dollar. Met you in a new city you just moved to Atlanta do you need to make friends walk up to someone an Auburn Shirt in the grocery store I, don't care what year it is I don't care if it's twenty twenty whatever pick a week up somebody in an auburn shirt at Kroger and go man I gotta get rid of Gus for. The I think about it is called triples kind of like a casino in that you can go different places and your odds will change accordingly. So Spencer Ohio state that's like playing the craps table when it's fun, it's really fun. But when it's not funny, it sucks pretty hard and like there is an expectation that you were there hopefully to make some money. Some, you know being a vanderbilt fan since that was the other one like that's penny slots where it's like, I'm here I'm here to spend time, and hopefully I will get a free sprite out of the experience ultimately Lake Nona aiming that higher that low just want to like get out. intact. Every other school is like something in between. But Auburn Auburn is like win. The casino. Starts a new game. And you go. You're like I've never heard of this game I don't know the rules. I don't have odd slack Jack Switch Yeah like here's a thousand dollars I'm going to put it down here. Let's see what happens. I. Don't know what's going happen I don't know what should happen I. Don't know if I'm being cheated that's the Auburn experience. Also one last argument in favor of Auburn that I think is the clincher. Who's got the biggest? TV. Wow. And Homefield school. Back to that. So. Teammate governors in a state of never. Never face each other tragic. Really. Yeah. It's a it's called missionary work over. Yeah. Maybe maybe tint pay a trip to to. UNGAVA. Spoiled. People's. Should have learned about it in church. If you were paying attention, you'd actually attended although. Games I I certainly did I don't know about Auburn Versus SEC Games rare very difficult to arrange a ballgame between those. But Vegas. Bowl. Going forward that is an SEC versus PAC twelve game. So Auburn will do it. You can not only can you evangelized to the littoral devils you can do in the city of Sin. Now this is a test of faith. Are you up for it? Are you will you put your? Yes on the table. and Go to the Las Vegas Bowl. The royal purple like the Robes and the king of kings himself. The mechanically lubricated royalties Las Vegas. Jesus was the original mechanic because he fixes the valves in your heart. And just like Auburn you go into casino you're there are a lot of wild animals here. They don't all match the theme. Of Faces Arizona State in that game because it would be like. Last well. Right Right locked he oh, my God there. Oh No, they got each other pregnant. Everyone got married everyone. Married. Let's see divorced. Arizona State of also not met. So Vegas Bowl it's GonNa be fun. It's good. BE A. Supporter is on a state scheduled a home at home. Did they? Oh Yeah. That happened in the before as my daughter would say before the germ Yeah. So that'll definitely happen. It look what happened Florida's. Sadler. Schedule game immediately the was like shines in. Let's go. Yeah. China was like no way. No. We can't let this much greatness accumulate place America will become. Our full. Win The bronze beat the bronze.

Arizona State scandal & CFP expansion update

"Welcome to the audible presented by trader. Joe's i'm stewart mandel joined by bruce feldman it is the middle of june bruce which is usually one of the quietest times in college football of the year. And i'm i'm i'm you know i've been as busy as ever been i. You are to. It's just been in explosion of news in college football. Let's talk about a pretty explosive story. That emerged on wednesday in terms of recruiting violations at arizona. State that You and are. Asu writer. doug taylor have been on top of so Herm edwards obviously has had an interesting time as the head coach at a issue and Look i think he really is handed the keys of his program largely to his defense coordinator antonio pierce. Who's i think has been promoted four times there and there has been a lot of chatter on the west coast especially over the last week about Some questionable recruiting Tactics and one of the things that come to light. As we reported at the athlete was that arizona state was hosting recruits on campus and in their building during the dead period that was imposed related to covid throughout. And this was like it was interesting after our story went up. I got a call last night which being wednesday night From a coach. Who's in the afc who said who's who's like we heard about this because we had two kids we were recruiting are recruiting who just matter-of-factly had talked about how they had been at asu. And we're like why you know. This was back earl much earlier in the spring way before this month started obviously And this coach made an interesting point. He's like you know a lot of kids most kids. You recruit do not know the ncaa recruiting rules. They do not know the recruiting calendar. They they just don't understand it. It's like something where it's complicated for high school coaches to know. So what you're doing is you're going to have family members in some cases recruits you know in on basically A somewhat of a secret That's probably getting out. And what we have found with duggan. I of reporting we talked to a bunch of former. Asu coaches and staffers. As well as. I've talked to a lot of people around the pac twelve and coaches around the country This was kind of an open secret on that was That was out there and so it got into a little bit as we reported of what one former. Asu coach described as a quote rogue culture and had corroborated that At one point a year ago. Asu for three assistant coaches. Were guys that this particular person said were of high integrity in wouldn't cheat And they were guys that were fired in. This person felt antonio pierce you know. It was really the one that herm edwards leaned on a lot and it was like basically these guys were guys that they knew were wouldn't probably do some of these things and they replace them with younger coaches who would kind of just basically do whatever they were told in that regard and which you've gotten some really really dubious Conduct in it and One of the things we'd report on was like this coach talked about personally. Witnessing an instance last season in the twenty twenty season Where ran into a recruit being brought up like backstairs by some recruiting assistance during coded. And they were taking him to meet meet up with her and this person was like it was blatant You know and so there. That's seems to be the tip of the iceberg here and one of the one of the Coaches i talked to today made the point that was like here. You're having all the stuff go in the pac twelve with asu and your you know it's it's out there now and it doesn't right now it doesn't right to the threshold of some of the stuff you see at some other like programs like people have made this comment to me in the conference. It's like it's not like arizona. State has had like a top ten recruiting class. They had the eighth ranked recruiting class according to two four seven last year. So it's not like yes. They landed jaden daniels. Who was who has been a terrific player for them. It was a big get for them. But it's not like they've been recruiting top ten classes in the wake of all this so it's gonna be really interesting to see how much of this pours out but i think it is going to bring to light. You know it's a really interesting situation. Because i know you and i've talked about this a lot over a couple years. When ray anderson the arizona state. ad hired herm edwards. He boasted about how they're going to do things a certain way and really look towards this. You know kind of almost like an nfl model and where her is delegating. A lotta stuff. Well the nfl model is one thing but the ncaa is going to view it. As head coaches are responsible for what goes on in their program. Now one of the things. I had heard from a former f. Asu staffer was. You know some of the guys who are deeply rooted in the nfl world but maybe new to college coaching. And that's that was the case of you know what's the leadership at a issue. Right now is they may not really they think these some of these rules are really stupid. They may not respect them and it sounds like they didn't care about bendon them a couple of things that that really stand out to me for wine. I mean you know for the most part. People are focused on the when you talk about a recruiting violation somebody trying to get an edge. It's a competitive advantage But in this case we're talking a kind of a blatant disregard for health and safety. You know all teams in the country last year. We're trying so hard to basically form a bubble around their football program to keep You know people from coming in that might Spread covid and i. We don't know. I don't know what the crime the order of events was here with when the recruits came in and went but asu had one of the worst outbreaks in the country. Last year. they had to cancel three straight games. Herm edwards tested positive. Half the coaching staff tested positive. I remember when matt berry the sportscenter anchor who went to a issue and clearly connected. There tweeted early on during that stretch that they didn't have enough guys on one side of the ball to practice so year. They were having massive cova issues. Amidst all that you know based on the description it was just kinda like free rein they're bringing in recruits and their families and having visits just like normal times they're hiding recruits in this in the stadium. Sweet during a game You know that. Put the players in the staff in the building endanger. And i think that because of that you know the ncaa is going to take a much harsher look view of this then just like you know they. They brought in some kids when they shouldn't have you know if there were just like run of the mill recruiting violation And then yeah the other thing that really stands out to me in your reporting pete damn has a story about this on yahoo Is you you rarely see a situation. Where so many people are so eager to dunk on the asu to to to out them like usually no. There's this unwritten code where everybody knows who's cheating but nobody turns them in or not rats them out you got if former Staffers there guys like you said they run off guys who didn't want to be part of this. Who are jumping at the chance to talk to the ncaa who were eager to let somebody know how shady it was there. And you know we like you said like what we've reported so far is probably just the tip of the iceberg in terms of this rogue recruiting operation. That was going on and yeah. This is where that that infamous press release when in and by the way for people who don't know or don't remember rare anderson. The ad there was herm edwards agent when he was an nfl agent so first he hires his former client and then they put out this press release. That makes a point not just. They hired a coach but they are going to invent. When i looked at up yesterday they called the new leadership model. A new model for college. Coaching with the coaches the ceo. Who is you know the leadership guy. The big picture strategy guy. It was their admission that her has no college coaching experience. And yet they think this is going to be great. Because they'll just structured in a different way where he is the big picture guy and the coordinators and the assistant sir. Maybe more empowered to run the day to day and based on this early description. I mean it just blew up spectacularly. So i think they're in big trouble You know without knowing all the full details yet. It just seems like when you got this when they when the compliance people are already the ncaa already they're interviewing people There's a reference and one of the stories to there being video You know well the video. So the video part of this. I can get. This is something we talked about. You know a little bit internally is their security but yeah so and one of the coaches has said one when the coaches has said look you know you're gonna get caught at this because their security video Unless you're gonna erase the security video which puts it into another threshold That is kind of mind. Boggling that this now keep in mind. This is not two thousand. Twenty obviously was not a normal season. So i know you. And i talked about this a day earlier about well. How could people not in the building see we remember. It wasn't like you're having the normal foot traffic. You're having the normal day to day where you know. Certain people are around. There's there's receptionists. there's admins whatnot. This is a little different dynamic. But you still have the security footage and so you know as Doug and i had talked about there. Have been You know what we have heard of this. This packet that has been sent A whistleblower in the program You know somebody had said to me. I don't know what's in the package specifically but what i've heard it's like three dozen pages and that there's some receipts in there. That could be very very damning and as you mentioned there is a lot and i you know this a couple of the people i spot spoke to who fit in this category. Who are not going to hold back and not going to lie to the ncaa when they get contacted about it and also in this point got made to me by a coach in the pac twelve is that there's a lot of kids that asu probably did not sign who were part of Some illegal recruiting tactics. Those players are going to likely get contacted and they are going to be told if you lied. The ncaa causes all sorts of problems for you. There is no just like the fourth of the former assistants. Do not seem to have any allegiance right now to the regime at arizona state. There's not gonna be much allegiance to to players who may have been recruited. There were part of some sketchy behavior and then they may be turned to. I don't know how long that process because that's not something here. We are sitting here in the middle of june Pac twelve media days like five weeks away campus. Six weeks away. I don't know how quickly this all ramps up. I don't know if it's like you know not to show our cards too much. But i know doug and i have a lot more in our reporting that like it's not ready. What a t-that but there but there's there's a lot of there's a lot more stuff that we have And i'm sure that there's a lot of other people who are also now in on this especially you know not to give away show too much of the hand but it's like we'll we'll talk about this for a second is. There's a lot of a lot of parts of this that have tentacles into southern california Recruiting and seven on seven and high school football in. So it's not going to surprise me fs some newspapers get involved in the reporting as well So it's you know it's it's pretty unwieldy in terms of where this story covers where it may end up going. What i'm it's gonna be fascinating to see is how does arizona state because again the ad as we just talked about ray. Anderson is really tied into this in a way that a lot of times a dis are but not to this degree. And so you know what happens in this and i don't want to speculate too far beyond that but you know we're not that far from training camp and this thing is really kind of exploding and again as our story that we that went up on the athletic on wednesday points out it was like it's they're direct ties to her involvement. I wouldn't try to predict how the ncaa part of it plays out. Because as as we've talked about a million times it's completely unpredictable and it might take who knows what it'll take them six months a year. Two years hour-long long to do that investigation. But in the meantime we've seen schools handle this differently but it's generally based on. How successful is the coach. You know we see in basketball you know. Kansas is going to protect bill. Fight for bill self to the death. Arizona tried to fight for shawn miller for years until he stopped winning as many games and then in football league. We saw ole miss standby hugh freeze during that thing until until he had his other scandal. But we just saw tennessee. Toss cheering for it aside Want some something kind of like this. You know once kind of similar where there was a whistle blower and suddenly choice but to investigate themselves so You know herm has given them optimism But it's not like he's really won anything significance yet. There was a lot of optimism that this could be their breakout season. But we haven't seen it yet and in fact you know. Ironically that thing that he has given the most That the that the asu fans have been most excited about is the recruiting in our starting to find out. That was a house of cards. So i can't imagine there won't be some some some pink slips here and it's just a matter. How high up does it go. You know their physician assistance antonio pierce and whatnot who are directly implicated. They're probably gonna get fire. Is hurrying to get fired. I think that depends on whether this gets pinned on Whether they can prove that he had knowledge of these things or that he was directly responsible for them. If he if he needs to be fired then. I think you've gotta look at the ad rain or sin. Because this was his higher heat this was his idea and you would think he'd be held accountable for it as well. So could be just a just a complete shake-up at asu. Yeah and again. I think it's it's going to be interesting to see how they handle it because as we saying it butts up against training camp and i don't know like can you suspend assistance pending an investigation. If it's you know again it's how quickly does. Asu kind of jump into this. Because they're already there's already investigation the ncaa's ordina involved. The compliance people at asu are already involved You know put aside just what it does for the recruiting part of it for the class of of twenty twenty two but just in terms of what it means for the guys on the field and then there's also the specter of okay. Well there are players. They recruited And have signed. What does it mean for their eligibility. Yeah potentially You know there's still. There's a lot of stuff that asu compliance especially is going to have to try to get to the bottom of and they're gonna have to. I don't wanna say they're gonna have to get to bottom in a hurry but the question is going to be as You know it's like we haven't mentioned this part of it. Also you have a new pack twelve commissioner. Who is starting in thirteen days. Right and you ever anderson who was pretty prominent in terms of the president of the school at asu Those were strong voices in in the pac. Twelve in a place where you didn't have a lot that's something else. I wanted to bring up real quick michael crow the president of arizona state some presidents. Aren't that involved in athletics. He is very involved in athletics. He is probably the most prominent voice in the pac twelve among the pac twelve presidents. a lot of people say he used the reason. Larry scott stay in power for as long as he did. And there's no question his his a. I've talked to people who Work at asu and that new leadership model that that press releases in keeping with just michael rose approached everything. Everything at asu academically always framed around how they're the innovators how they're going to reinvent things. So i mean. I think he was probably i know he was. This was not entirely ray. Anderson thing like michael crow was definitely involved in the hiring and approval of edward so And i would all the other thing. I was told is that you know. He was very You know made a really big deal. About how serious they were about. Taking covid protocol seriously last year on the campus. And and how well they did completely giving an f you to that so I don't think this is going to end well for people. They're back to the podcast in a second. But i listen up. I have the scoop on your new favorite podcast. It's stars your dad or your best friend or your grandma and forcing yourself hang on. Grandma doesn't even know what a podcast is. Well that's where the people at artifact come in artifact is an audio company that captures your personal stories as one of a kind podcasts that you can share with your loved ones and keep for future generations to hear whether it's your parents telling the tale of how they met your grandma recording her life story or your nine year old talking about being nine artifact makes it easy. They connect the people in your life professional interviewers than edit those conversations into private radio quality episodes that sound like the real thing. Bruce and i made an artifact about the origins of the audible and with father's day coming up. Here's the thing if you haven't bought a father's day gift yet. Artifact is perfect. It's a last minute gift that doesn't feel last minute. You're going to ask advocate for an interview about his life. The wire cutter named artifact list of the best gifts for families just over two. Hey artifact dot com slash dad for some examples and right now you can use code audible to save forty dollars off your first purchase again. That's hey artifact dot com slash dad. Use the promo code audible for forty dollars. All okay stu. We're going to pivot a little bit late last week. There was news about the playoff possibly expanding to twelve teams. There's a big meeting coming up. What do our listeners need to know. So last week the working group the four people who had apparently in total secret credit to them for keeping this a secret from the media for to spend two years Hashing out this. This proposed format as recording this. All of the commissioners are in chicago troop true days of meetings. And that's where they're gonna have their first. You know kind of open. Discussion and debate over what was proposed in the next week in dallas. That same group will meet with the presidents of a group of presidents who are basically the board of the cfp not expecting them to come out of those meetings having signed sealed and delivered anything Basically they just need to give the sign off and say you know we want. We want you to keep pursuing this. We want you to to make this happen so in everybody in the industry you know The nobody thinks that greg sankey in jacksonville brick and bow these very prominent figures would have gone on national teleconference with the media. Touting all the great things about twelve team playoff if they thought there was any chance that their presence were gonna come and say nah. No we're staying for. I think everybody expects this is the model and it will happen. But it's going to take all summer and possibly into the fall to kneel down all the details to you know have to rework contracts. Possibly with the spn and the bowls so it's a long process from here but in you know we've spent a lot of time in the last week making calls talking to people around the industry and i would i get the sense that it's very popular like they. They put a lot of thought into it and people are very impressed with the overall proposal. The one element that's kind of controversial and took people by surprise is that the quarter finals will be played at ball games. I think people assumed that those would be on campus. That bowl games which have really just can't quit them. Just can't quit the habit i mean. It's it's it's amazing because the bulls have is not the days of ten fifteen years ago john. Junker at the fiesta bowl. Running up those huge expense account like the bulls. Don't have nearly the power that used to and yet you know you listen to bob. Dole's be on. that call. Talked about the sanctity tradition. And yeah i agree with you. I think they can't quit them. My story the up on the athletic on thursday gets into some of the reasons why they people feel like they can't quit them. One is just flat out there and contracts with them until twenty twenty six and if they want to do this sooner they may have no choice but to honor those contracts but also you know just is you know as much as people mock the and i know you hate it when they do mock. The lower level bowls As glorified exhibitions or whatnot. It is it is important for them to keep that going and keep that healthy because at the end of the day even in a twelve team playoff. You're talking about nine percent of the fbi. Teams are going to be in this thing in any given year. And i would say it's an even smaller percentage of teams that will regularly go to the cfp so that leaves a whole lot of schools. That still need something meaningful to play for at the end of the year So it is important to them to keep the bowl system going and maybe they feel that if they if they were to kick the the rose in the fiesta and the sugar and everything out. Completely that the trickle down effect would just kill the other bowls That's a that's a. that's a possibility. I just get the sense that the idea of you know our colleague. Andy staples definitely leading the charge on this. Dan wetzel who wrote death to the bcs a decade ago. They do. They really loved the idea of alabama florida. Florida has to go play Wisconsin and the bitter. I love the idea of that. I think a lot of fans loved the idea. I think a lot of people love the idea of that. I don't know that commissioners feel strongly about that though. I mean does it. Yeah because the commissioners outside of kevin warren You know like greg thank. You probably doesn't love. You mentioned florida. Which is obviously. It's not you know there's probably worse weather states in his footprint in terms of that but like yeah it takes it puts them at a disadvantage to go. If you're gonna go play a game against wisconsin. I covered a packers. Vikings playoff game in january. I mean it's an awesome place to be but you know. I'm not playing in the game and i'm not somebody who grew up in a warm weather state. So it's i kinda get that part of it but to me. You know that should be part of football. It's part of the nfl and the bucks went up to green bay last year. one But the interesting thing about sankey being one of the authors of this is that i i know for sure that the abc's and his conference are probably more than any other not on board with it Because they look at this as a chance to you know college. Football tendency has been in decline for a decade or more. Even at the even the alabama's even the george like everybody has trouble filling their stands especially for those early non conference games and for them. If they're if they knew that going into a year giving any given year you know that they felt like they have a pretty good chance to finish high enough to host a playoff game that becomes part of the enticement of by season ticket. You know by your season tickets. You will have first dibs on playoff tickets but under this proposal. Yeah four teams that you would have to be specifically seated five through eight to get one of those. If you're higher you don't get one of those you go straight to the to the bowl part of it so i think it's very clunky and i think the logistics of it are daunting and i think that even if they do it they'll get three years into it and be like this isn't sustainable But as of now. I think that the support for it among the commissioners is much stronger than maybe people would realize. Let me ask you a question. An inside baseball question. You talked about this a little bit. Offline but i kind of pick your brain more on it Our pow ross dellinger of sl dot com had a fascinating story. He did two days ago. About how this has been in the works for a long time and it was kept under wraps and credit to ross four Bringing it to light. I'm curious like you know. We both talked to a lot of people in college. Athletics this was not you know there was a lot of people involved in this. Like how surprised. Are you that. It was kept under wraps to this degree. And like i don. I wanna i wanna take a question beyond that which is almost like what does that tell you about how we're going with. This is last year around this time. We kind of realized how fractured the leadership of college. Football was right. It was every man or every leader every person for themselves every conference for themselves right. That's to me that was one of the takeaways from all that And yet this was like seemed to be seemed to be a very concerted effort where everybody was on board So i don't know exactly. I'm trying to phrase the question to you but like what is your read on how they were able to kind of keep that under wraps the way they were and crew presents a unified voice on something that has rarely uniform. Yeah i think that it is. I can't emphasize enough how different this process has been that covered years and years of of. Bcs meetings you know. I can remember being at a at a hotel in south florida in two thousand eight. When mike's live i proposed they don't even call it a playoff at the time of plus one nobody would dare utter playoff I was in a covered. All the meetings in two thousand twelve. They lead to the fourteen playoff. It was nothing like this. It was all public leaks. They basically looked like nick there. I guess what i would say was very adversarial. Jim delany wanted. What was best for the big ten mics live. Obama was best for the sec and everybody had their agenda and it was just kinda. It was very college. Football is very disorganized. Chaotic kind of like what we saw with covid last summer. This has been much more organized. I think they picked the right for people to to. You know wasn't the. I think the whole group had been working on it the whole time it would have leaked out. You picked four people. They swore themselves to secrecy Lots of smokescreens. Along the way rick. Sankey up until this year every time you he was asked about it. I like four teams. I'm fine with four teams. And apparently all the while he was plotting out in ross one point they talked about twenty four teams so they did very good job of that and then i really do think i don't want to sound cheesy but is really the first time in all my time covering this that they put together something where they it seems like they genuinely looked out for what's best for the sport. Not just what's best for them because it's not best for the power five to give the group of five not only to give the group of birth but to leave open the possibility they might take birth from the power five if one of the power five times as to how is how is this. Aside from the part about homes home games vs bowl games if you're the sec. You go from having a chance. You're not you're probably not getting to your rarely getting two teams. Now you may get four. I think twelve teams is definitely better for the sec than aid. No question about that yeah. Twelve teams also. Good for everybody else. This trying to get You know i mean the big ten has his is a realistic one to send multiple teams. It's great for the group of five Last year they had to they would have had to In this in the in the playoffs so they found something that everybody. That's good for the sec. That's good for the big ten. That's good for the good for. Yeah it's it's seems to be good for everybody. The only thing that i i mentioned this before and i don't know how much this'll be an issue or not is just it's more games for players to play. And but you know. Look with an i l. there there's more visibility more opportunity because as we're talking about now these some of these games in late october november should have more marketability more visibility for them so. I think that's seems to be a win win. I mean i think if you're a player for for iowa and and you're not necessarily a high round draft pick and now you get a chance instead of going to the outback bowl to play in the playoff. You're not going to be all that worried about. I have to pay extra games. I think if you're you know Name the alabama star player or the clemson star player georgia star player. Who has serious. Nfl aspirations who is going to play in this thing maybe every year of their career almost every year of their career. You know that's a whole different. That's a different animal. And i didn't think that the commissioners on that call last week. I thought their answers. We asked him about player. Safety and length Their answers were not satisfactory. I don't think in this climate where i mean literally the day were reporting this. There's like the eighteenth congress hearing about and i l. and you safety athletes safety and is a huge issue on that front for them absolutely an end. The athletes obviously are more emboldened aware than they ever have been. We saw that during covid out there. They're very aware that they are kind of you. Know like all the lanes that they went through to play the football season last year warranty. You know in large part about we can't lose the money. We can't lose the money so to your point. I think if they do this they're going to have to find a way for the athletes to be compensated for those extra games and it may be that and i l. is the way to do that. That it won't is. There's we're not. You know nobody is remotely entertaining the idea of paying players a salary or anything where the schools are writing a check to their players. Or even if the ncaa's radio but could it be that that come twenty twenty three Everybody who plays in the allstate sugar bowl gets an gets appearance fee and i'm using air quotes right now. An appearance fee from That they're like you know police for one game that they're kind of like Influence or or folks. That could be a possibility but i. i don't think. I think they will be met with fierce resistance from congress state politicians. They'll be lawsuits if they just say all right. This is the system you could play. Seventeen games and amateurism amateurism amateurism. That's just not gonna fly in the current climate all the while that these the you know the these stories have been dominating. The news cycle in college. Football mean we talk about michigan and boesch becker. Last week in that has not let up there was another round of protests. And you're seeing more former michigan. Athletes come forward to say. They were abused by that. Dr to To two point two you just the horror. The fact that michigan had so many opportunities to stop this and didn't and now there's obviously in terms of the the football program aspect of it. There's calls to remove the bone. Becker statue and to rename becker hall. And i'm always a little leery of awaiting into that when it's somebody else's campus what. I'm starting to wonder about what this thing is. Where's jim harbaugh and He he had one comment a little ago. Constant you know saying defending rochemback ler boesch. boeckler is was his undisputed mentor The guy he styles himself after as michigan's football coach and as this goes on and as more comes out As the face of michigan football like he'll go to big ten media days. He'll get asked about this. How does he respond to this in a way where. I'm sure he doesn't wanna step by. He may truly believe that both dzhembekov did nothing wrong. But there's a danger there have going to bat for him and looking like you're just being completely on sympathetic to the victims right. I do think this is a unique dynamic in that. Like you and i talked about whatever parallels there are two penn state and gop. Turn aware you boesch amac or has been an iconic figure in college football and especially tied to the university of michigan. The team the team the team there are so many people not just former players but even people we we know you know in media circles who has spent a lot of time around michigan and so there's a reverence there well as people are trying to reconcile that it's it's kinda unique in that even though boashan bekker's been gone for a long time in. This doctor has been gone for a long time. You have a head coach. Who enlarge part was brought back to his alma mater because of his connection as affinity and all things both shimba cler. And so as we've seen. Jim harbaugh is kind of an unpredictable guy when it comes to what he says in front of a microphone to I i very fascinated by this dynamic as it's relating because we've seen a lot of former standout players at at at michigan people were now twenty years removed from their playing careers speaking up and the story as you know our story on site is. We're not quitting. Robert anderson survivors demand action from michigan Jim harbaugh is going to as you said. Gonna be back in the spotlight. Some people i've talked to about then the last week about how the sham boeckler story and how it's being handled by the college football media you know. I had this conversation with somebody on a last thursday. And they've like well it's in the tapping in the off season. And you know games are not going to be played for a couple of months and as you pointed out you know one of the not one of the only times. It's been in the news but one of the flashpoints where it was in the news where there was a press conference happen the same day as the cfp announcing that there was movement towards twelve team. Playoff at that. News comes and goes. The ugliness of the michigan scandal is not going away Does what what is jim. Harbaugh's answer's going to be to this when he is going to be asked about it and he is gonna be asked about it. I think he's going to be asked about it more than one. Time as you said big ten media days announced that it's gonna be In indianapolis like a month from now a little more than a month from now that is gonna come up. I mean bo- shambo goes not just any other former coach and his relationship with jim. Harbaugh is not just i made. It is much different and so You know does what. Jim harbaugh say. It's from the heart. Does that ended up. Inflaming the situation further in causing even more You know even more headlines. Even more attention because jim brandstatter who at least people in the big ten probably know of his a longtime voice of michigan football. He gave some comments. I think they were to the detroit. Free press earlier in the week. That certainly you know Inflamed a lot of people in terms of You know let question timeline of of shock. Sign as one as one of many of the accusers. And so how does jim harbaugh handle this publicly. It's it's going to be something to keep an eye on its i. I don't know how he'll handle it. But it's gonna it's gonna it's going to be a lot different than it's going to have a lot different impact than the radio voice saying something pretty much. Anybody else connected to michigan football. It's almost a situation where the current michigan football coach was when rich rodriguez was michigan football. Coach i give somebody from the outside. Who has no previous ties to that era Dower probably be a little bit less messy than a guy who played for beauchamp sham boeckler models his whole program after bo sham boeckler basically moved into the neighborhood that bo used to live in to try to kind of almost like get that same. Feel of what it's like. Bose existence was to coach. The the michigan wolverines. I mean it's really like It's a very unique dynamic. That i don't think there's quite anything like it in college. Football right now. And you've got unfortunately sadly tragically and hundreds of of Victims out there from this doctor and you know they weren't certainly weren't all michigan football players by any means but they now know or they've now heard from several of beauchamp bekker's players just his son who the family has come out and disputed you know. Non family member michigan football players. Who said they told beauchamp boeckler about this and we're disregarded You're gonna have a whole lot of people out there that if the face of michigan football tries to defend this guy or certainly worse than that tries to you know like like some other. People don't question the credibility of the people bringing these four that. That's not going to go well so i don't I don't pretend to know how that's gonna play out But you know to me that to me that's more. I guess you can take down the statue and you can rename the football building. Those things to me are symbolic. It's how does michigan football deal with this. This you know drastic Trap this this tragedy and how it's impacted the legacy of the guy who is the base of Was the michigan football for so long. You know penn state in many ways is still dealing with that or has been for a long time in terms of you know they brought in james franklin who has no Connection to that era and who has for years had to deal with the fact that they're still a fraction of that fan base. I don't know how big it is. That still reveres. Joe paterno and you know Resents that he does things differently than joe paternity to cetera et cetera. So this is going to impact michigan football. I think for a long time all right. Well we've run out of time for this week. We will open the mail bag next week. I'm sure you guys have a lot of questions about the playoff. Our encourage you to go on the athletic where we've written eight gazillion articles about the playoff including a qa nicole. Our back and i did with the subscribers and answered a lot of those questions. But we'll see next time.

CLAB 22: Talking Kemba's knee, media week and All-Time All-Stars with John Karalis

"The only the celtics learned of celtics wi with dogs. goldberg off the glasgow. Tuck all things special guest. John crawley's masslive particularly our we should be about Walkers in how much love tristan thompson most importantly when you hear about his new book corrosive not tristan and we'll get into that shortly. Do the show john how you doing. I appreciate you having me. thank you. So we've got some stuff to talk about. Some news has happened since we potted last one of the you know the big signing of the offseason here a meal. Jefferson has signed an exhibit. Ten contract what is an exhibit. Ken contract i mean should be a be echinacea exhibit contract. Basically means that you're here to get cut and go to maine red claws get a little extra bonus for going to the main rent clause It's it's a developmental contract that allows team closer. Look at a player who may not quite be ready but has a an intriguing skill set and that player can go to that team's g. league team in further develop and then from there perhaps on the team But the thing about the exhibit ten is it does allow for a player to get away. It's not control player for year. It's basically we're we're giving a little extra we want to develop. You wanna see we got and in. Maybe you can. You can come out of this as a member. Celtics if he goes to the g. league and kills it and the detroit pistons say we like this kid. They have an opportunity to offer my contract and he can go. And you know. God knows the pistons could use more centers. So yeah hoarding. All the beads. I don't know what the pistons were doing this year. But the way i think the right way to think about this contract is that this is an added bonus to the jason. Tatum acts extension a meal. Jefferson and tatum were of course teammates. They appear to be friends in real life In tests in fact. Tatum actually tweeted. Sign him tweet a tweet about signing and they'll jefferson after he played well in a game in europe. So i think that's kind of this. The celtics taking care of jason in more ways than just financially it makes sense. I mean this is. We're now getting into the portion of celtics team building where you see stuff that ps their star. You know like there's the tear down. And you know the same prestige hoarding the picks. We've seen aft stairs the flipping assets for better players and getting out those making those graphics realizing those draft picks and now that one of those draft picks has hits into a potential. Mvp player now. It's like okay jason. You know how much we love you o emil. We've loved him forever. Yeah we were going to sign him. Anyway you'd have to say anything. That type of stuff is what what what. We're going to start seeing over the next few years because tatum natalie extension. He's got a player option for that fifth year. And you know that's one less year under team control. Also you know when that when he opts out of that. Are we going to have another hayward horford tech situation or are we gonna have what. Anthony davis justice with the lakers and sign another contract. Longtre sounds like he's pretty happy at least now and this sort of thing is definitely good for keeping him happy. But everybody's had when they sign a two hundred million dollar contract. I mean how can you not be. There are some other things going on this week in east. I'm not really sure how much it's going to impact either team or the eastern particular but maybe it will make depending on how it works out on the east. A little bit tougher In the middle of the pack. Anyway and i'm speaking specifically about the john wall was a whisper trade What are thoughts on how that might impact east. I think so one thing that comes to mind is obviously the wizards. Were kind of right on the verge of making the playoffs last year and couldn't do it and that was without john wall for the second of a season. He missed entirely Because of injury so in the short term you have to think russell westbrook say what you will about him you know. He's he's had his ups and downs but still a pretty darn good nba player At and i have to think about would boost their chances for making the eastern conference playoffs as may be seven or eight seed this year. But i think the bigger effects on the eastern conference have less to do with what the wizards are going to look like this year and more to do with. What the wizards are gonna look like. In the long term future if westbrook continues to be a super high usage point guard with Taking a ton of shot attempts and perhaps not in the most efficient or teen friendly manner. And if this doesn't work out as well as maybe. I think the wizards front office is hoping than i think. This move could certainly opened the door to bradley. Beal getting moved down the line. I agree with that. I think this has the potential. I think they might have made this to move with hopes of keeping could certainly backfire because bill means the bony hands and westford the ball in his hands. And and the thing about the wizards this year is they've got got shooting on the floor around westbrook and they'll have space and he'll have space. He was all nba player. This past season so in with space to operate he has gone into it. Hack now what does that mean for. Bill does that create more space for bill to operate than he might be happy with this. You know westbrook using a red pick and roll to get to the rim And then at some point turning and flipping a pass out to bill who can then cycle in behind him and get to the room himself or get some open space to shoot some threes. If bill finds himself playing off of westbrook am enjoying the space that that's that creates then. Maybe that does work out for the wizards. I do think that this does push the wizards potentially into playoff hunt. And you've got to remember that. The wizard the the playoffs this year to plan. So it's you don't have to be the you can be ninth or tenth and still have shot in the playoffs. So the wizards are certainly in the top. Ten in the east but they may even be a little further up six or seven so they really can make some noise. If these things work offensively and westbrook can can gel with bradley beal so besides that there's other issues that may affect how the playoff race shakes out end chief among them maybe how available players are As they come back to their teams received eight point eight. I believe positivity rates For covid and that's not a huge boost but in the same general neighbor. I think seven point one percent. Head of the restare positivity rates for players now considering everything is very condensed into a shorter period. It seems to me that we may be in a situation. Where if someone has to sit for you know even just the minimum ten days you could easily miss like a significant portion of the year schedule. Maybe as much as ten percent of it depending on how how the case goes all. Should we be concerned about this kind. Like level of positivity rate. I mean some of the players like marcus. Smart doing his media of jumping a little bit but marcus smart said that he was pretty. Happy with heavily has been conducting. Its coronavirus protocol But i mean there's some real potential for disaster isn't there i think so. I think i mean. I'm not a big fan of the way things are going but i also understand that they weren't going to go back into a bubble that was mentally taxing and financially taxing. The league is just not sustainable for full season. Now if they get through the regular season and they find themselves of struggling to get through the regular season and just get they may set up a playoff. -able that's always a possibility and i think for the sake of keeping things fair and healthy that that could that could be something that they do. But that's all that's a short time so that might be more. Boats is might be more amenable to something like that but we're talking about young people who think they're invincible no matter what and you're going from city to city and they're going gonna be bored and so they're gonna take chances that they're bay think they can get away with and some of them are going to expose themselves because it's just it's too rampant so if anybody you go to new york you spend a you know four days in new york playing knits brooklyn back to back i. I can't imagine that those guys are going to sit inside. read all night. you know. Even if they're curfews even things that even if there are things that are shut down new york. I used to live in new york. I'm you can find anything. You want new york at anytime of day no matter what and these guys with their resources will find it. So it's going to be an issue this year and look at dodgers i think had Like the best quote of the preseason where this basically he was asked like who who can come out on top of the team. That doesn't have kovalski like that's that's we're looking at because like you said guys can be out. Even eysenck matt guys can be for like two weeks. So you're talking about a guy two weeks out and then you still have to pass a myriad of test the pass cardiac tests the comeback that if it sweeps through one team. I don't know how he's gonna react. But if it hits a couple of guys on the team if if it's jalen brown and marcus smart all three of them were in the same place at the same time. What happens to the celtics. They're three best players so that that's going to be. That's going to be tough. And i want to see how the week handles. Yeah it's gonna be really interesting You know i. I'm thankful that grant williams is on this team for a lot of different reasons but one of them is that grant can organize a nice catan party in the hotel room. And what exactly do do some fun. Wholesome activities that don't involve going out somebody. Marcus smart playing guitar. Maybe we'll say no. I think i think it is a really serious issue. And i think you know if we're comparing to other leagues have handled this. Obviously the bubble was kind of the best case scenario for how can work out but You have to take into account that corona virus is of course spreading more rapidly now than it was then by substantial degree all across the country In addition the nfl is currently undergoing a whole lot of issues. As a result of coronavirus. Were having you know last week. For example the broncos had to call up a third stringer wide receiver to play quarterback for them not just lost that game. So i definitely agree. There are going to be some issues where teams will lose large chunks of critical players at that. We just have to factor that into this year and i think perhaps even more concerning is that you know for all of the stuff that we do know about covid. Nineteen we still really don't know much about the long term effects on people's health and obviously you know these guys are young and in their physical primes and have a lot of money and access to healthcare. But you know therapy who there are stories of people suffering severe long-term lung damage as a result of this. And i think that's you know there's an issue there both with kind of player helping length of careers also with contracts we allow these dudes coming up next season in couple seasons from now are gonna be available for huge contracts. And they're going to need to be a have their their best long term health outlets possible going into those years so i think it's gonna be challenging. I think you could start to see. Maybe some labor issues as well Have to see how it plays out and hopefully a vaccine is ready to go sooner rather than later will be sees prouder schedule speaking specifically to how condemned some of these games are going to be and it's not just going to be condensed for boston. Early it's also going to be very very tough. Probably the toughest star. I can recall to a celtics season. It's basically there's not a lot of games in december but there's no easy games in december of january is okay we have a couple of games. Detroit chicago orlando and then games against the knicks. Earth and wizards really the only easy games out of sixteen february has sacramento another game against washington. That are definitely easier. Fifteen games with march closing with the clippers in toronto Before all-star week so they are really going to be putting these young guys into a crucible they'll also be doing on national television. I large portion of the first half of the schedule eighteen national league according to the press. Release you guys thought about the schedule. It's you know. I don't like what what this looked like. An i don't. It's aside from it. Being compressed aside from it being you know a lot in a short amount of time I just don't. I don't like i don't like the the travel i just don't like the i'm going back to the copen thing i just. I don't like the way this is going but billions of dollars are at stake. So they're gonna do this But this is gonna be tough three struggling without kemba walker for a while This is going to put the spotlight on jayson tatum. When you look at the schedule at the this is pretty clear and why. The celtics are on national tv. Eighteen times. Is jason tatum. We're looking at a guy that is is hoping holdings make another jump into mvp considerations. Thirteen va now. He wants to go first. Simone and not only that. But that's what triggers the contract escalator. That will bring him from one. Sixty three to one ninety five but This is the focus is on him and him and jaylen brown and it. It's really gonna be on them to carry the team through this stretch. If if i think. Tatum has the potential to really make an early. Mvp case if he can carry the celtics and be at twenty to twenty five point game. Scorer have some assists from signature. Plays if he can help the celtics to a good record release than with all the national attention on him. This is the opportunity for him to to jump out. People say hey. Wow this kid's really take off just signed the extension in our what he's doing so very thing. That comes out of the schedule is. I'm thinking that if jason tatum can can rise up then he has the potential to to really make some noise legalize. Yeah no i agree. I think that the beginning of the schedule is a huge run for potential for jaylen brown and jason. Tatum brown also has to be thrown into that equation. You know with the departure of gordon hayward with the fact that we're not gonna see kemba walker for at least a couple of weeks By the sounds of things jalen has a real opportunity to Like up his status as an all star in the making and He's gonna get a lot more touches he's gonna be asked to be. I think a focal point of The team both on offense and defense and obviously you know. Tatum is the guy. The celtics want him to be the face of the franchise but You know as we've seen in the past unless you're you know. Lebron james or janas antenna kupa player is really hard to win against the best teams with just one dude Going off you need to have depth and you need to have a quality running mates early in the season And i think this is a real opportunity for jalen to shine but you know and just to say one more thing on this. I think kind of we talk about the loss of gordon hayward in the offseason. I think it's fair to say that. By the end of his time on the celtics hayward was not as impactful a player as a lot of people myself included thought. He was going to be at the start that being said the loss of hayward in the offseason regardless of what you think about him as a player means that the celtics margin for error is a lot smaller than it was You know gordon hayward missed a lot of time as a kind of injury prone player. He also reached seventeen points a game on really good efficiency last year so And if you know with kemba potentially out for a couple of weeks with a really difficult early schedule. I think this is going to require some young dudes on this team that maybe we didn't have as immediate expectations of two. They're going to be tested early. I think you're gonna see whether aaron nasmyth or peyton. Richard are ready to go very quickly. I think you're gonna see an increased role for grant williams. I think you're going to have to figure out what you have in robert williams as well as a thing. There's not mentioned robert. Williams doesn't really fit into his rotation very well and i'm really curious to see how he's going to be. That was the thing. I've been trying to find out for less of oppressors. Haven't been that question yet but Speaking of the pressures of for media week We haven't some really good ones I wanted to talk specifically about tristan. Thompsons in particular interruption. If maybe you could talk about that a little bit john. I've got the. He's he's really. I remembered him from when we were playing the cavs when complained cavs on fairly often postseason. But i didn't really pay attention to him in the same kind of way that you do when a guy is on the team you follow. And he's really interesting. He is thoughtful. He a lot of time into answering his questions. All in. he's really he's got some. I won't say it's a tech a tendency to to mention a certain player. I'm surprised people are not Getting rubbed the wrong way by it. Maybe you could talk about lebron. So i think the interruption you're talking about is when i was i was asking tristan about. I was trying to make the comparison. You play with lebron now. You're playing with jason tatum. Who wants to become lebron white Nobody's lebron you know. And i just wanted to say like hey you you play with this great guy you want to play. The you're playing. This wants to be great. What can you look. Can you impart on him. So the way i phrased it was you played with arguably one of the greatest players of all time and he leans the best players of all time. Which hey you know you got that first hand knowledge. That's how you wanna play. That's fine with me. A lot of people will make that same I think people. I know that there's pushback with lebron stuff in boston. A lot of people do not like lebron james but whatever your opinion of lebron james it is unmistakable that he has at least one of the best players in the nba. You'd want to put number one. That's fine even want to put a number five. I don't care because the fifth best player in nba history is still one of the greatest players of all time. So wherever you want to rank lebron like even your hate can't can't push them that far down the list. So tristan thompson played with At at his peak and won a championship of lebron and so he has inside knowledge of what. It's like to be great what it's like to be around a great an all time great and what it takes for a guy like that. The work that he puts in the way. He handles his teammates the way he just carries himself like that is important stuff to me. And you're right. Tristan is a very thoughtful guy with his answers. And i'm not used to that around the celtics because they really liked to play close to the vest there anytime they can throw out a stock cliche. Answer they'll do it. That's how they want to operate they don't want any headlines one controversy going all the stories just kind of like be medium level. You know whatever they don't wanna have big headlines and this was great but tristan thompson is a he. He actually offer. We answers these questions and when he answers questions mentioning lebron he. He speaks obviously very highly of him. He has a very high opinion of lebron's he appreciated the time. He played lebron and he thinks that having played with the gives him a lot to offer a boston celtics. And i think that's part of why they they brought him in. They brought him in for that and they brought him in because he was on not cavaliers team. That was down three one and came back to be the seventy three one team and they brought him in because the celtics had multiple twenty point leads in the eastern conference finals and they blew them all and they had mental lapses stupid turnovers. And i don't think it's any surprise that tristan thompson from that team. That came back from three. One is here now to show these guys. Hey this is mentally in those situations this got to carry yourself not what you guys just did against miami because frankly that lost the miami pissed danny ainge off and you can tell and bringing tristan thompson in. I think direct result of that absolutely. You know So i really liked the tristan thompson. Signing this offseason i think The celtics offseason. For my money's did not look super good after hayward signed on to charlotte deal and it was a way to really kind of rebound so to speak and You know. I think the tristan thompson fit is going to be a really good one. I talked to some cleveland fans. After that happens yes they do still exist and You know the things that they mentioned worry that tristen For all of his off the court affairs shall we say Oh you're just killing managed. Kristen for all of that. You know was beloved in cleveland as a teammate even after lebron left a lot of the young dudes they're viewed him as a kind of leader Both kind of on the court and in the locker room. I saw some footage from cavs games last year while it was kind of watching highlight videos trying to see what trysted might bring team. And you know there's stuff words. Trista is in the huddle. He's diagramming plays. He's telling us where they need to be. You know. I think this is danny. And i think john you just kinda spoke of his danny ainge wanted to get guys. Who are battle-tested who have been in the trenches and who really know how to win in the games that matter and if there's anything that we've seen from chris thompson's career that he is a good guy to have in those games. I think you can have him on the floor in the critical moments of the east finals or the nba finals. Maybe you know he can be that guy. He's a really smart teammate. It seems like everybody in the locker room likes being around him. And i'm really excited to see what he can bring both to the team and to the press docket you know. I think you're definitely right to say that. The celtics have adopted kind of the ballot. Check way of handling the press conferences for the most part but I think tristan can provide some some really positive energy to this team and really helped them take the next step. Keag actually kinds of kind of fits the bill of the not really saying much while saying things at least in his introductory presser year he talked about. How easy fungi. I think several times on say some interesting things. Besides there he has been going to see. Jalen brown plays since he was wheeler high school. All which i thought was pretty interesting and also speaking of we are high school. Jim brandstatter his availability. Speaking about changing the name of wheeler hi guys thoughts on him doing stuff like that. I'm i mean jaylen. Brown is my favorite player on this team I think the stuff that he does off the court is as important if not more so than steffi on the court i think. His teammates really respect his vision his leadership particularly with stuff like with the nba players union. Where he's now vice president and he's kind of emerged in the wake of Some of the kind of black lives matter protests that the nba has been Working with he. He's really emerged as a leader on that front. I think his teammates respected. And i think they're kind of empowered by a higher open and how serious he is about that work. So you know the more the better when it comes to jalen brown the activists on real betis gonna keep going and i'm happy that he's going to be on this team for at least a few more years. Doing that carries on a little bit of a tradition of boston. Celtics activism going. Back to the days of bill russell. This is important. Work that he's doing and It's important that people understand the type of work that he's doing. Okay so regaining wheeler high school very important work because don't want to honor a confederate general The people who fought to keep slavery that's that is something that on on one level really sends a message of like look. We're going back to the the beginning and were not going to. We're going to erase some of these mistakes. He is not concerned with service level stuff. He's he's not trying to chop the head off the dandelions he's trying to pull it out by the roots and i think one thing that is extraordinarily important to work that he's doing the work with kids in schools and education reform asked bringing Stem that program with nasa goddard eggs working on to bring stems curriculum to underserved communities the his an i. I remember this from when i was in school that you have this tiered s- action when i was in middle school. You had the seventh grade going from seven to one to seven fourteen and seven fourteen. Was you know a path to like vocational technical high school in a ones were like the advanced kids. And what may what what made those tears you've already predetermined our lives and that is horrible now at the time we sit there and saying all right. I'm in the civil ones in the seven. Whatever you just go along your business you would back like wow jalen is right. That is that is horrible to put everybody in those tears like that and then you go to certain communities where the bottom tiers look similar and the top tiers look similar. It's no surprise that the white kids are in the top. Two years and a lot of black kids are in the bottom tiers. And what does that have to do with that's opportunity. That's systemic holding back people from not just the young age generations. so jaylen brown's focus on giving these kids in these communities. Equal opportunity is the basis for all of his actors. That's where he wants to. He wants to make sure no special treatment. No nothing it's equal. Give everybody the same opportunity and then it will shake out how it shakes up but it's important to give everybody the exact same opportunity so i commend jaylen brown for doing that kind of work at a high level and using a platform that he has to to make that happen he understands. This is this is his window of opportunity and and he sees an. I think it's impressive. I actually. I could not be happier. He's on the team As a journalist inject my political opinions into dwarf that. I do but having someone who is already doing that kind of thing for us. It really makes me happy because as you said bill russell he. He's my favorite celtic. All around because of what he did off the court as much as if not more than what he did on the core in to see kind of a a second coming if you will of that on the celtics now is just an absolute joy to cover all speaking to your your point about tracking I grew up really poor. I was put into the blog. Kind of You never going to go to college. Track things and you know a lot of hard work in a little bit of systemic racism. I was able to get a phd. I say a little bit of systemic racism. Because i was poor and i did dumb crap when i was a kid like shoplift and i got caught and when i got i was put on probation sent to juvenile hall and then when i didn't get to my meetings on time instead of ending up into the criminal justice system on a permanent basis. They give me a bicycle. So i could get to my my meetings on time. So that's what happens to me for my whole life until i got to college colleges. They're learning about systemic racism. It didn't even occur to me that this was not normal for large chunk of the population. You just you don't see that kind of thing so for him to use his platform. he does To not just raise awareness but to systematically go after the root that creates these kinds of situations. I think that's absolutely critical alm. I don't want to go too deep into jones activism. What we really should sometime me to a whole pot stuff agreed but there's also some very important stuff of different sort going on in boston on was one of the first pressures that we we had a for media and that would be kemba walker who i feel so bad for him because every presser he's in now's only questions he gets for the most part but i mean it's kind of unavoidable because he takes up a significant chunk of the celtics cap space. And they're going to need the best puzzle to get out of him but we're not really sure exactly what we're going to see from his knee. We do know all that he was going to be operating under this january protocol that they initially thought is my understanding of how to schedule this. This stem cell injection. I'm dr but i am not a medical doctor so i don't really know crap about this kind of stuff all but maybe john you might be able to give us some background since. I know that you've worked through some injuries. A basketball player in your past and have also spoken to some people about things like this previously. What's going up. They won't set. That's that's the one thing that stands out you ask kemba traffic bunch of different ways and they will not say exactly what it is trying to infer from the stem cell injection at it is that is typically some kind of treatment for arthritis stefo about the plan the stem cell injection which which promotes healing The strengthening around the knees when when you're doing a strengthening program like that you're trying to get the muscles to handle more of the shock of the stops and starts when the mussels are stronger. They can hold the the mechanism of the joint in place when the muscles aren't strong enough. That's when the bone. If you're if you're dealing with an earth riddick situation the bone is more likely to start hitting but if the muscles can keep that in place. You're going to get less that own on bone reaction. I can tell by looking at your face. You know how painful that is that is. The plan is to strengthen the leg to make sure the leg is handling the load of the shock. Every time you jump. I believe you put ten times your body weight of stress on your joints and every time you run. It's like five six times your body weight so these stops and starts a constant like a piston in kind of like pumping pumping pumping. I like use the example of a wire hanger. Where if you bend wire hanger enough eventually. It'll it'll snap and that's that's the when we talk about load management. That's the that's something i'm talking about. If you don't stop bending the wire hanger will eventually break. You have to stop roll out so it can last longer and so i think the approach with kemba in also when. I hear that they aren't doing any surgery that tells me it's not attendance. Not something that can be repaired through. You know you get like a cadaver tendon like they would do in a tommy john surgery. You know you you replace something or suture something or whatever like that's not what's happening with him so this is pain management. This is This is something that i think is frankly the wear and tear of a small guard. Who is who has played a lot of basketball in his life. And this is what happens to small guards at this age in starts. The breakdown starts to break down quickly. So i think while i'm concerned about his knee. There is almost a little bit of like well. If i don't wanna say it's only arthritis but if they can find the plan. Is the stem cell injection works and they can continue this type of course of action. They can manage the paint. And if tatum and brown and marcus smart in me smith can be a shooter and grant williams can be you know glue guy know tristan thompson can catch a few lobs. That can get you through. And you can spend the next couple of seasons with kemba managing his his knee getting through a regular season saying whatever and then hopefully by the playoffs. He's ready to go in and everything strengthened soon appropriate point. Well i just think that the focus on Campbell's role is as important as the focus on campus. Unique kind of going forward at kind of john you were just speaking to that effect but You know a lot of a lot of the reason that this is such a big season for the celtics. The guys for brown and tatum williams is because danny ainge in the front office. I have no doubt want to keep camera on ice. For as long as they possibly can I think if they need to bring it back to get him in rhythm to Get some wins. They probably will if things are not going well by say the first few weeks in the season but if they can afford any wiggle room here tatum and brown make the junk that we kind of hope that they can and if they can afford to kind of keep cambe just working on the leg to get it as strong as possible for the playoffs but they don't have the kind of flame out that day in particular walker had in eastern conference finals. I think that's the optimal scenario for them. And maybe that speaks to kind of the long term planning for this team's future finding ways to add players to the roster that will kind of lighten campus minutes and games played burden. I think his contract at this point is among the harder to trade contracts in the league so people see him play. I think yeah absolutely so. I think it's reasonable to think that knowing that it's going to be really hard to trade cambe. It now becomes a question of. How do you build the roster out as much as possible to maximize his effectiveness for when it matters. This is that you know. I just want to add that because if you look at thirty thirty four point three million this year thirty six next year. A player option for thirty seven point. Sixty year after that. It's a lot of money for a guy that if if this is how it's going to be for the next three seasons and really what you're paying for is the playoff performance and if you win a championship in that three years than great fun than none of this. None of this matters but when you're looking at his money and how you're allocating your salary. Thirty six million dollars for a guy that's going to be kind of limited during the regular season is not money well spent so now you start looking at the if kemba shows this year that this is manageable. It's fine with a normal offseason. He can manage it and then next regular season you know what maybe he doesn't play back to backs okay fine. That's not a big deal you you've got you've got talent behind him. That can handle that fun. There no back to back in the playoffs. You deal with it then. Okay then it's okay. The problem is that if if it's less than okay you can't trade him. You don't have the tools behind you to really make big. Splashes they got tristan thompson this year because gordon hayward left and that opened up enough space for them to sign him to the full mid level and hard cap themselves so they can they but without having to like worry about that hard cap so much. They can't do that next year because next year. You've got jaylen. Brown's big extension jason. Tatum is big extension. Which right now is at twenty eight million a can go up to over thirty million marcus smart for one more year if you still got kemba on the books you can't hard cap yourself because now you're doing real cap gymnastics. You won't be able to sign anybody so the kemba walker situation is really worth watching. Because if he's less than okay this year and the celtics lose confidence in him being okay they may have to pay off load and see if an oklahoma city type team exists next year. That's willing to accept a couple of assets so you can get him off of your books. And maybe you turn kim by in two useful players or A trade exception that you use to acquire those players but that that becomes an issue next next offseason that that we have to watch. It'll be costly too because really the only draft essence boston has left are on picks of any value. And those aren't even going to necessarily be near the lottery. Hopefully so right because of that you're going to have to give one of the better young talents. I mean this could be like grampus can be robbed. This could be romeo. It's going to be somebody that they least think that stands a very good chance of becoming rotation player in which at that point you might just say look we have the we have a suck up and then maybe you wait. One more year ops in becomes the expiring contract and you say look at least the expiring contract has about so you might have to spend one season of less-than-optimal kemba just because you can't trade him at that point you have to wait one more year so and that that handcuffs you a little bit because now you have the taxpayer mid level versus the non taxpayer and that you know one less player that you can bring it look is jason could be an mvp candidate and that might eliminate a lot of this stuff but if he is in that six to ten range and you know jaylen brown's and all star but you still feel like god we need that one guy this this puts you in a position where you can't have that one more guy. Yeah no it's definitely gonna be tricky and it's going to dictate a lot of how the next couple of seasons shape up for the celtics. I wanna go back to a point. That I think just made you know in talking about and we talked about this On the last pod that we did a traded player exceptions and kind of use. Those obviously the celtics still have a pretty massive trade exception from gordon hayward sign and trade to the charlotte hornets. It's as much a function of. Who's out there as anything else. But maybe if you're danny ainge thinking about how to use that trade exception You can you have to consider kind of white cameras. Long-term plan is there and whether it's may be wise to use that trade on somebody who could fill minutes the guard spot. Now that being said. I think one thing to keep in mind is that the celtics already have point guard on the roster in marcus smart who offers some real value You know this is a potentially first team all defense player. Who's three point. Shot is improved. Basically every year that he's been in the league and is kind of he's going to be in a much bigger role this year than i think he has been in prior seasons. He's also only twenty six years old. So maybe the long-term answer to the guard spot is already on the roster but even so if that's the case then you have to figure out how to maximize the effectiveness of kemba was being paid much bigger salary than marcus. Smart and if If marcus smart is your long term plan at point guard than that probably means that you're you're looking to move on from kemba sooner rather than later. We also have one other thing that we'd really like to talk about and it's related to great celtics players more generally in fact all-time. John recently published a book. The boston celtics all time. All star is the best players at each position for the sees. All i wanna talk with you a little bit about how the book came into existence on like what what made you want to write it on other details on you could tell about how how i was actually approached to write the book publisher. They just launched this series of all time all stars. I think at this point only the green bay packers all time all stars exists and so this is the first of their nba series and I was. I was approached with just the topic. Hey we want to do a book on the all time all stars. Boston celtics They familiar with my writing and they asked me. If i something. I'd be interested in doing it. I love some history so i thought that would be great But the formula the approach and all that was all up to me and what i decided to do was make it like a real all star team and not just go one through twelve. This is these are the best players i decided to. An all star team has twelve players and so there are five positions. So i'm going to do the. Starting five their backups at each position. Give myself two wildcards to add a couple of guys. I also picked you coaches so you a coach in assistant and it's it really was just a an exercise of trying to go back to the beginning and you get the best players all of these generations and then you try to sort of correct for the va league as it was in the beginning which was eighteen and what level of player success can be somewhat attributed to the lack of competition the lack of integration and in in different factors back. Then that kind of allowed for certain players today to have a bigger role. What was your impact on. The team was impact until history. And and you know just trying to whittle away some of the the noise as best. I could I'll tell you. I came into that thinking. I knew for a fact that certain guys were going to be on this team. And at the end i was like leave these people off and like pains me to leave some of these people off. But how do you. How do you pick twelve people. Out of all of celtic's history It's hard and there are some overlook people that when you really dive into everything that they accomplish like this person needs to be on this team and that that means there's no room for somebody else. So maybe you could give us one person i mean. Do you want to read your book. But maybe you could name. One person did or did not make the list that surprised you. I'll tell you that. I did have to play with positions a little bit okay. So we're looking at. Let's look at the small boats. Do you think about small forwards and south history and there are three. That comes to mind right away in in chronological order john. Havlicek larry bird pulp years. Now what the hell am i supposed to do with that. Because i got to spots. I created this whole for myself with two spots for each position and i only got two wildcards. So how do i make this work. Well john havlicek spent half of his career also listed as a shooting guard. So maybe i have to go there and say all right. Well maybe a check makes this team. And larry bird makes us team and paul pierce makes his team by shifting positions a little bit and so that opens things up which now creates one more opening on the wildcard team. So i'll without giving too much away. I will say that there is one celtics legends that everybody loves make this team that by switching havlicek to shooting guard i was able to fill this guy in as a wildcard And i feel like it was inappropriate inappropriate honor especially considering the events of of this past twenty twenty sounds to me like your book is taking a page out of brad stevens position basketball philosophy. You know i could redo this as point guards wings in biggs and come up honestly completely different not completely different list. But like that's that's where You you can. Kind of finagle with things. It's there are obvious guys right like the starting five knowing that i put how check as a starting shooting guard you can. You can infer that bob. Cousy havlicek bird. You know bill russell. Those are those. Are starters power forward okay. Maybe there's a little bit of debate. They're the real. The real question is the backups. Who backs up. Odd cousy because there are some really good point guards in celtics history. Who do i leave off from. Celtics history you know. I've got gioja white. I've got dennis johnson. One of those guys doesn't make you know. I've got other players that got power forwards like crazy i've got i've got centers like crazy of robert parish. Cowan's you know their names here. That's like wait. You're gonna leave guy off like so it's it's hard. It's a hard practice. It's hard exercise. I didn't. I don't want to reread the book because i'm gonna look at it and be like now. I run run choice here while if there's one thing i know that i can peg for certain locked in i guarantee this is the case The celtics commentating team is that recipes. Tommy heinsohn yes. I mean come on. It's gotta be mike like that's alot. I mean johnny most. How do i leave. Johnny most off of this. I didn't pick accommodating team but like how can you leave gravelly voice. Johnny mos- that's he's the best moments in celtics history. So i can try three man booth but like oh. Yeah even see. That's that's how legendary this franchise is even picking a broadcast team. I'm going to leave somebody. Beloved off of that team is going to bring well. How is it different to write a book on sports rather than covering on a beater blog. Because i i mean i for me i actually got into writing about the celtics as an exercise to warm up for my dissertation and then it kinda just took off But that's not even those kind of things. Were very different now. I approached writing. So i imagine it's really different compared to covering Yeah it's a lot of work. It's a laterite. I spent a lot of time in cafe nero in somerville sitting there Sucking down coffee off coffee going out like eating three meals in there because that was just space. That was conducive to my work. I i feel like i write in a conversational style as is in. I feel like my writing is more conversation with a person than it is a manuscript stat. Like a scroll partner that you read out loud with that. I come from a tv background. And so i'm used to looking into a camera and talking to people. And so. When i write i write i speak and this is just me putting into words a lot of the things that i wanna say about these about these players and so the difference in writing this book and i also say it's writing. This particular book is different than writing other books. people have to do a ton of interviews. I'm only did a couple of different interviews because this is such an opinion based book. This is just me arguing with myself so this book was really like fifty to sixty thousand words of me. Doing what i do in thousand words Every day so it's it's mostly just me going back and forth with myself. But however there's a ton of research that that goes into it like old interviews and finding quotes from old interviews that kind of highlight what i'm trying to say and i did do a couple of interviews with people who around that time and who were you know in on some of these guys careers so research wise. It did take a lot. Because how do i determine you know. bill sharman. Who played in the fifties. How do i figure him out versus you. Know dany aims. Were you whomever. In some of the more current players got a dive into that and not just look at the numbers and say well he. His shooting percentage was terrible. Everybody shooting percentage was terrible back. Then why what's the context. So it's it's that level of research that probably the take what i do for a regular piece on masslive and multiplied by And that's basically the process of writing this book. Where can we find it anywhere. Books are sold my friends everywhere. Books are sold. You go to amazon barnes and noble bookshop dot org. If you're looking to support some of the smaller booksellers of. But i think it's starting to appear on shelves so if you can safely find your way into socially distanced base covering a bookstore. You may see on shelves. I might at some point soon. Try to walk through a bookstore to have that ego boosting feel of seeing my book on a shelf it is still surreal But i haven't even gotten my shipment. They give me a few bucks that i can hand out but it should be available in physical stores soon. But you can. You can't order online and it will ship With a week at this point in time for christmas yes indeed. You want to get a gift for celtics fan. This is a great way to do it. Anything else that. We are working just nut no big projects. No big projects. I just getting ready for the for the season so And of course the lockdown celtics podcast which which i do daily so Key for that by the way. Yeah it's my pleasure. I if you can't tell i enjoyed talking so anything that you know the fact that people want to listen to the things. I have to say great talking. I'll just keep going to stop me using podcasts. I am going on the off. The glass outlet podcast on. I think tuesdays when we're going to do that Or i'm going to be talking with nick. Fan corey waldron about The saddest division in the nba and I'll let you guess what that is. But we're going to be doing just kind of preview for how that division is gonna shake up in this season. We'll say i should also mention. This will be our first podcast. We will also be humvee off the glass network which is pretty cool and of course you can always find my stuff on the celtics wire as always you find a pod was pod catcher. Please subscribes he. Don't miss an episode. And you like what you hear. Each race five-star is if you don't like something have some gesturing near the drill. Maybe don't appear with a hashtag or any article were seen was trying to the deepest coverage.

Yeah I've been to Morocco I got crocus to prove I guarantee you their Ohio state students who went to Disneyworld for a week and said that they studied second Spencer have you even been to Asia you don't you just fall asleep in world of China a lot no comment a remember remember that Hagrid at the same time Snoop Dogg was becoming the Chancellor of Kansas University wrong guy because you know who the guy the guy he's still got his cardio you know who the guy who can like walk right in the Octagon and probably put up a passable effort in a fight I think he had brought his acrobatic friends which Jeff Long interpret when when Jeff Long Former playoff chairman day and night let's fickle is new day I don't care what Dana White says I'm ready so Friday was an exciting day we had dogs acrobatic entertainers he I guess he was literally picturing gymnasts like I don't like us picturing like the trampoline dunk guys him medieval times yeah by the way they beat the crap out of him it was you're saying this for a three point victory bunch of mistakes every single hit was gonNA hurt real bad and they were going to run a they were gonNA run the hell out of the ball keep them off the field which today splendid always come back to this listen I never get tired of telling people about splendid China because they never believe it the best part about this I will say this it's like ninety percent on Jeff Law Snoop did like uncensored versions of everything to am real happy to make fun of Jeff long all night but one I don't think anybody really wants to hear that to and to that Shit Yeah I do luke fickle is like Ryan all day you listen here ride day rent feet pornographer on twitter yes it is jeff long not into eroticism pornography they didn't look that stuff to me more more than one option there in terms of Walt Disney remember because for a while there was a theme park owned by the people of the society and listen like they went and asked todd the vandal about exactly what he did vandal tell the vandals with Martha Stewart a delightful man. How did this happen like did they see his cooking show I think I think he was available at the price you didn't hire him I Bet Ryan Day strictly elliptical machine at this point luke fickle combat ready but I say that because I have an enormous head is like absurdly cheap or anything but I think he's cheaper than getting somebody a little bit more contemporary triangulation of recognizable at affordable you did deal Gabriel had three turnovers? UCF kind of looked pedestrian fickle look like fickle gallagher man he looked like a man Yeah I was GONNA say for that Shit you gotta get into Missouri Brother Kansas is strictly a cinemax and below kind of economy when Jeff Long heard the words UCF's mascot that's actually the names not it's not nitro it's yeah it's called the vandals stole that night outfit that Man Shit man a man insole a man in full search for that job I'm Brian has a fat face hell yes exactly Ohio state you might have had he's got that Glaucoma I hear that easiness or fuzziness about his I hear certain medications can help with that it's like the best part yeah no they they hammered since since he did that thing where UCF was going to get more than thirty points they're gonNA make from one team to another without really lingering too much it could be due to a lack of focus I don't could be due to sort of snoop dogg is very tall did he think they were going to climb him like some sort of mate all that sounds pretty good we should ask I will say write him a letter and asked I would be oh yes I think that's right and also up for like game for yes the most keyword is willing because if we know anything about the last twenty five years of pop culture it's that snoop is of his snoop is very transparent about like hi I'm wearing this Jersey because the school paid me to do that at whereas drake is just like all I want to be a basketball superstar so I don't know if that's what they call it at Kansas really doesn't matter but to celebrate the start of basketball season like what within a week willing to appear at your event no matter what it is yeah will you give will you give him a Jersey I know we give drake hell for this that snoop snoop is right up there in terms of cash I am I am honestly surprised they're responsible that they took the correct lesson from the most recent round of incidentally basketball sanctions Sabbath man so the other thing going on Friday night that was not a broadcast anywhere was at our Charlotte Act to guide medieval times Scott Sweet night out of it I were killed a transformer Anaya whereas skin I think I think you mean he Steve Jackson Kansas right they should have been like every ever listened to one of his songs like what I saw soul plane let's show we had the world's angriest ACC fan described by some as the finebaum caller of ACC fans Bum rushed the stage L.. Lean in bitches I am surprised Rick Pitino did not operate at this event once he heard that there were exotic dancers of cash that's the best part is that this was this was Kansas's hey basketball season is starting celebration at Florida they called midnight madness they call that a bunch of other places so it was he told not to there's no no no am I know I know but like they didn't hash this out right like if that's on the universe point that they were looking to do they just picked on like we pick Dave one-step for a cameo like Yes yes I do I don't think I don't think Steve Dogs brought up the Charlotte show to also bring up the fact that we have Jacksonville tickets on sale you can if you're looking for a link VOX MEDIA VINCE DOT COM I'm aware anyone's or two new has been doing it for longer just with less he cycles through the jerseys less obviously that you are daredevil right when he becomes daredevil and found is overwhelming that's the experience yep you're welcome it's a rubber it's Robert Altman movie which you can kind of hear at the end of the audio by the way the audio is awesome everyone says it's a matter liars because you can hear people not only this toil gotta speed limit and a speed minimum you gotta keep up Martin's score says he loves our podcast that he said he said deleted all my tweets ars hi how much noise can you make fireworks inside it's not against the law in fact it's encouraged this whole thing we've left out that snoop Dogg also had like a hand held money cannon that he sprayed the crowd with doors they weren't Ashley well anyway check the accounts it's around somewhere it's made sure to I'll make sure to redirect twenty-five snakes to it how about that so yeah Jacksonville the AAC of being under major NC Double A. Investigation and possible sanction hell yeah this is what they did they were like strippers the only journalist I trust Clemson Fan so I I thought Louisville Fan was way funnier Chris fucking got here what are you mad big beer garden beer hall place that like an excellent established yeah and they had like four different things going on to the fact that somebody just randomly like hey I want to come am I assume you can find it there if not go look through the accounts of ours you'll probably see it at some point I bet I'm check real time nope doesn't take you too great real people who are not even in our room you can hear screaming wedding party like down the hall that's fucking great audience you went bad audio go listen to our Atlanta show just keep talking about the ninety six gators like dues not even there I mean I was pretty sure at one point like skater was either going to be thrown out hi to physically remove someone from the premises and what physical comedy that would be for everyone involved yeah I can I descend I think anyone yeah he was for the premises by by a guy who used to work as a bouncer who thank you so much and currently it's like open mics layer dialogue it's not for the it's not for the beginner but you know what it's also not for the slow you got you got this this podcast we I I think the most encouraging thing about the whole of the whole fracas was that we later learned that this was not a a pain great except please buy tickets Jacksonville show somebody just let this guy because he was like hey what's going on and the place where we had it is like a bit he works as a wrestling coach yeah so before you had to entertain the idea of any any of US actually try in customer there's somebody who innocently and I don't blame the person who did this because it's the shutdown forecast calm down also who would be there on purpose sooner wage in black metal of yeah ballpark y'all eight but everybody complaining about the Audio New Y'all and in game shape it's it helps to listen to the audio if you pretend as an opportunity to say a bunch of Nice things about your team or your the conference in which they play reexamined that think about the choices that you're making horn networks right there you probably don't get PAC twelve network but you could probably have somebody send you a transcript big ten networks right there see this thing he just man he didn't know what he's getting into yeah the quote we got from I believe Gingko boy on twitter was that this dude was like I talked has that means I deleted the one that said shutter island is Martin Scorsese's Kangaroo Jack like that would have been really so bad I wanna be I wanna be awesome let me be are you set a cow can I can just go ahead and suggest one other theory as to why snoop can freely float wise perfect show no problems whatsoever the we talked about the panthers a little bit the Carolina Panthers and we all neglected to do this collapsing. Yeah Skate so if if you have any delusions that we're going to come to your city or your region and use it it is it is it that snoop doesn't pretend to be a lifelong fan of the team live and die with that like drake I think it's more he has just a slow burn about it which that that also is a hobby the way did vowel beforehand to do that like every four minutes and we didn't back yeah we did a sound check fuckers yeah so out Brown right next also Billy Graham and Ric flair and when we mentioned Billy Graham the room with her I thought okay we're all right then we mentioned rick flair the tyrant like you can go get that somewhere else we don't give it to you yeah I knew we were okay by the way one last note on the Charlotte Show thank you if you attended was he is wearing shorts he had some chicken legs. I'm not worrying about getting kicked my ass kicked by check my favorite part listening back is just spencer just keep spitting bars shitty audio onto your phone as possible so so the natural transition here is we're talking ACC next next on room in unison instantly went I do have one regret from the Charlotte showed that I would like to rectify here one yep just one we circle back to the ACC there is very very clear reason for this on the way back from Charlotte Holly Switzer night we listened you just for paying customers businesswoman like that Ryan is Nicer than me and this is the thanks you assholes give him meanwhile I just wanted to dump as much the one where everyone's like fascinated by all these fucking crossing routes these cower for running we thought we were settling to do we set out to look for the Iowa Radio Broadcast and it turns out that we don't have that on my radio dial so we turn to the Michigan as the second are you know chicken scratch sketch notes for Today on the big board is a C. C. Stuff but I would prefer to skip ahead island king if listen if you want to if you want somebody to just tell you how good your team and your conference our SEC and ACC networker right there resort and found treasure. It was highly fortuitous because the Michigan broadcast was exactly what we were looking before the Iowa broadcast to be you would never think of the it right or I was just going to talk him down like he was just going to be like dear God this man won't I guess I'd done talking about okay you know how you can listen to the audio of the live show and have it be better come to the fucking show broke boys yeah we about Clinton in there yeah we thought it was a Louisville Fan at first per one reports they use a Louisville enthusiasts report is Louisville Fan per jink oh boy tend to be very smart very thoughtful very like analytical people and win a Michigan game is happening they it's like to the Iowa Michigan Michigan broadcast specifically the Michigan radio broadcast featuring dirt dirt orf and his partner Dan Waldorf which was not what we said Gaulle moral delightful every single ask how skater if you're listening to this come back brother no no I mean we'll throw you out we'll let me that'll happen but Last night I knew we were okay because our opening bet was a bit comparing good listeners only for only for rich folks who can yep sorry I for the record I am personally against posting audio of the lashes at all I think it just just your smartphone or laptop it's the way we develop new medicines it's how we compose music it's our connection to friends and strangers tech is changing all of it doesn't matter like if you scratch them I think this is true of many fan bases but if you scratch them or if you see them in full bloom during a game they all devolve of Y'all could have taken this to Israel skinny man this was real skinny and drunk yet but house could would have picked this dude up in the Telfer me the Telfer may this can broadcast to be the one where everyone's just like shouting in anger right you would expect that to be the stately courtly when you respect the island Iowa wanted final degrees and accolades and then the game ends and they're like okay and now trae eight thousand words comparing this game to the journey the journey of because the Michigan fans that we now Jane Kosten Brian Cook Braids and birds like are all outset when a Michigan game is not actually happening Gary from Kalamazoo right they all they all turn into gun through out there running this cowardly Iowa offense the one the hotel then they turn back into Bruce Banner Yeah Yeah Yeah Yeah no just a little surprised because I just didn't think Michigan would permit sidewalk alumni that they start growing hair and claws and they're like they lose all of it and then people have multiple profession it relies on crossing routes me and my buddies at the fishing bar could do better about this what about ice fishing Janine calls and I throw the phone at a wall four we thought we were settling for something and we had no idea what you're in see I am not I wasn't with Y'all but I am not actually all that surprised August Kreis Janie got down points back when Bowl randers program loud maybe he did for a few seconds I was gonna say it only takes a few seconds to comes just popped out you didn't even ah genes into my shit pass carpenter firm so my favorite part was like Dan dear door if you Ronin laps until I shit my jeans and I would've been runnin jeans unhappy and I'll be there why Jesus blue perfect linemen under Boashan Boeckler He was so fucking awesome that like in his down time he was the wrestling team sparring partner world a field goal missed in there like ours sure did I valid shocker it went outside the uprights it's most to go inside Jim we're watching our score three points that is horrible. Jim Was Dan's Lake backup in Michigan so these what he became now is like according to the Wikki at least which I accepted fact Boche and Beckley would slide him from right tackle to left tackle and that is where the ball was going hang up which was when shape her it was Jim branstetter gone shape patterson he takes the ball he's drifted it goes out he's got it's so it's very every now and then they beamed down to the sideline guy whose name is crash crash where did you see down there and he's like golfing were being facetious were not this was the most I have ever enjoyed consuming either of these I'm going to try to par I'm GonNa try to to man one segment number member news have known each other for fifty years I think the point that like they've known each other for fifty years and this is the banter you get do do this beautiful dude is out there like the teams foreign partner couldn't over the whole wrestling team he was he was basically like a hyperactive nine year old who just needed more more activity I mean like I grew up you know as a football fan like uh Dan dirt over his lame and now like I wish you could call every game I would die for endeared thanks chuck time sacked dog to be fair to be fair if I had a transformer that was garbage truck I would name it dear Dorf go horrible and that was his third use of horrible on that driver was fucking broadcasts where you're like an were here where the dolphins are losing by eighteen game hasn't even started fuck it's Dan dear but man he could not possibly be just to watch the whole thing with like the cranky two great great uncles yeah the Statler and Waldorf approach they've just got two guys in her the men in the pattern I don't know how that happened but they're all open and he and he just throws it right at the first down marker and bounces off and I will intercept ref so what I'm hearing is work were exclusively going to enjoy the Michigan Ohio state game from the Michigan Radio Brand Overmars face and other dude on the broadcast June Jim brandstatter was said to be tattered a upright they have this thing where they do an upward punch on the inflection at the end of every sentence man got it makes me wanNA run through walls yes it they just intercept it that deer door waiting the exact amount of time like the perfect amount of just three beats you just hear dead deer door really complimentary at also philosophically skeptical about the offensive innovation and wizardry of the Iowa Hawkeyes and over the age of sixty surely you must be thinking oh there's a play by play Guy Nope you're just Michigan head you set up like yeah yeah anything about the endeared or if that I'm just appreciated Dan Beer door now he was so awesome as a football player and I think this all builds toward the defense is just like off fuck he's on our side now here comes Jan tiered or he's not going to run a flock and crossing route he's GonNa run the horrible there was there was a hardware horrible where branstetter by the way you notice we've only mentioned to me over a shape patterson there is also a great banter moment where like like usually in a broadcast you have like every ten minutes like some focus group is like you know there's a producer in their ears like all right they were a little confused for a while because obviously the game was ten to three four some time and our were clinging to a lead here and they were so stressed and then the second whistle they're like never endow just a commanding defense drive it went holding penalty holy penalty false start sack sack I believe was the final tally on that drive every time Iowa like loaded both barrels shot themselves in the foot they're like defensive masterpiece never ask can't figure this thing out the affluent Trivia question who the hell is this wonder Brian Fahrid's so okay additional their producers named is Tony I hope that he has the same age of by the way not lie No last name both announcers both award thing right one more thing just this I'm sorry that you missed US Ryan I'm sorry that you had I'm not sorry that you didn't spend six hours on construction late night live but this was our reward Iowa's final drive when they were attempting to anything resembling approaching the end zone which they did not because on the final attended three for like six hours and these dudes are like Dan I gotTa Tell You I've sweat through four pairs of jeans and we're wondering aloud in the car why are they worried about a ten to three game this is Michigan Iowa and that they referenced Multiple Times and we couldn't figure out why not a bad play for shape paterson Oh that was that after shape outer said like threw the ball guys let's say something fun right no there is no fun on this broadcast I have fun when they're running all these goddamn crossing routes we found out aw mine the shrink Soroush producers in their ear lake this is great we're having the funny banter was like they got to talking about golf and and when you call Mark Golf game the Bank of bottomless and the others like oh the next time you eat a zone I want you to think sack time sucked I watch this game on television so I did not have nearly the enjoyment out of bounds rather than force an interception or take a sack I feel okay it was funny against Wisconsin it was funny against Army I have crossed into some sort of realm why is Pat McAfee on television will weaken have these two I mean I don't want them on TV I don't WanNA see their faces I wanna see the veins in their head the I like the part where you said I had to do pap an so I actually watched some we'll look I wasn't good which team is in which ACC division scrap that good thing we didn't read it because throw throw that record out because Minnesota's in the ACC coastal additional the big twelve game that came down to Louisville defense sure and then the only game in which nothing stupid happened was background with doc right right yeah I don't know they'd be like a southern or something like that I don't think actually played ACC team no they'd be Georgia Tech Challenge get a pit challenge for you pit pronunciation challenge Pluto Pluto Pliuta George Minnesota is now in the ACC coastal there's a pneumonic device that we worked on for the Charlotte show that we didn't get to help you remember new piece of lore spotted by a podcast reader the AC sees official website listed Georgia tech is playing Minnesota during this game according to ACC dot Com all right yeah and I don't Know Illinois might be an ACC team to at this point could probably argue it Luda of four not not a partner for fuck you buddy so yes in your welcome kit that's victories that recharging the fit super weapon with Dave wanstead talking about sandwiches has given you my favorite part is those two Idi I think it will sleep wherever they're allowed to sleep not the time Naptime Yeah 'cause Illinois because that's there was a squirrel at Tennessee game and it's not just like Oh hey there it's not like when there was a faulk set what was that a Texas Tech game a couple years ago does Illinois go up okay fair Is it time to talk about SEC football yeah yeah yeah oh rally fought or or occasionally you'll see like all there's a there's mischievous squirrel at a baseball game or something like this no this is somebody who lives in Oak Ridge four sort of not Nerpa Nassar Okay doing eight bit theme songs of Various Fight Songs and the Illinois one honestly in eight bit it sounds just right because you're like yeah this sounds like thirty five cents the article he found this squirrel abandoned which I would argue all squirrels are abandoned so I don't really note the distinction there and he took it in as a rescue the people were starving and yet we found instructions from this year on how to me. AC coastal they're leading it are the highest is Virginia ranked. I don't know I mean I th well it just by record oh there one because they beat Georgia from this game I would say was holly pretty much calling how would go almost exactly I've seen this movie before holly off his Volunteer Pride this man's name is I'm going to apologize if I get this incorrect Sayed Awad not familiar okay or not and now I have a bunch of people who think that squirrels and possums are the same thing which is even dumber stop that I the only other noticed notable thing Tennessee Helmet Tennessee Jersey. Whatever to this to to the Tennessee Georgia game and they're just all these pictures of of casual Tennessee fans like hey look at this squirrel and I think they're happy because all of the pictures where they're holding the squirrel in the stands they are not facing the field and they're very it is to have an excuse to not this is his pet swirl silent there's too much of my life in this podcast silence on I don't know what exactly it is according to if you listen by the way a couple of cups of our Texas am blog on ESPN nation network he is I have seen this movie for because Georgia has a lifelong habit of digging around against it's what is delightful the one thing I'm complaining about is that normally I just have a bunch people amendments every day who think raccoons and possums are the same thing order than they do against Mercer to beat Tennessee right now and so at eight twenty three PM with Tennessee leading fourteen thirteen in the second quarter I said you and shortly thereafter he began to dress it up and put it on instagram and so he brought he brought the squirrel with this little like Georgia will score before halftime twenty fourteen heading into the locker rooms final score I don't know thirty seven to fourteen the thing that I missed just go ahead and read verbatim what you what you put down and then we'll we'll compare it to what reality okay who wants who wants to find the whatever point in the box score who wants to open up their Youtube TV and find what time eight twenty three PM was so so we estimated that this is when the it and it also sounds like this is a team that can go up down left and right that's it took the tempo changes you like to press press b. grew up watching the NFL you think if this is like the most boring man alive because you know the NFL was boring for like twenty years he was consistently on the board was Georgia scoring twice before half-time I regret the error and the final score was forty three fourteen which also is explained by that This quarter right yes correct it was it was part of the series of the series of plays a during the game which Tennessee Georgia fourteen who does he really that's that's what the local news stories how can how I probably know this person you probably do there's a decent chance wait what's his name let me find it if it's my neighbor if it's one of my neighbors not all right here is the air is the article titled Tennessee Fans Pet Squirrel shows eighteen for some fucking reason I say that like I don't know the reason and everybody got excited and I said there's something very specific happening here the y'all are missing body bad games and Tennessee is now a body bag game that's the part people are missing Georgia likes playing this against Mercer and they don't have to play any it's time to talk about sec let's talk about the Tennessee Squirrel fucking hell yeah let's do that So score was four allied I know what the score was I just don't know what the time in the game was at this point okay efforting it was your gene so it was fourteen thirteen accuracy I love that feeling of knowing you're team stuck on a score line your team scored seventeen that's it that's all we got that that last score at the end of the first half came with nine seconds left so you were very very close to mailing this with spooky yeah no I've got you U._S._C. Notre Dame as pretty certain outcome and other than that nope Alvin this mad at math since my fourth divorce math was my wife I never knew vic advance had this many marital problems I assume they just it was good enough yeah that's so I I don't know like this is this doesn't say a whole lot knew about Florida other than hey defense is real good against bad quarterback the the other part of the defense is that all thirteen of Auburn's Auburn's points came on short fields they scored a field goal on a drive the Sir the Florida thirty nine another one that started the Florida forty four their touchdown came on a dried the start at the Florida thirty to the fact that like Florida's defense is good for Auburn to really struggle to sustain anything drive wise that's like the most alarming thing you should take away like season I take off these cufflinks go to the ice I'd imagine that's not my best work I could do better monster untrue trask if you're lost just look around and he's probably the reason also he's constantly drunk you look you ge- he's massive of Dan Mullen was running him I I don't know why after a severe leg injury but you know who's the quarterback draw coming up third one would your quarterback has an armored left leg yeah you got all todd Grantham Cindy lauper because breath and Auburn forgot double coupons on this day they did they did they forgot the double coupons which meant that Florida profligate Florida wasteful Florida date married and we're unhappy it gets cold things things get frayed coughing season go is that if I wanted coffee nine yeah those good like started laughing at them house do it if that was not familiar yeah it was an Auburn Florida game which meant that everything went sideways very little made sense It was stressful for everyone involved and by the Tennessee Georgia game I the rare litter of moment when I am not matinee I'm actually laughing I'm a little bit mad because I really thought I had the tailed and I was up by six carry on speaking of Nail Mad at Mass Matthew I'm math ma a heinous fix he played like a freshman Kyle trask managed managed the game well did get insured rolled up on him unintentionally handed over four turnovers Florida Fortunately Auburn was feeling equally profligate they handed over four turnovers again to disabuse the notion of anyone that I am sad road game etcetera etcetera but like they they didn't have any option B. They didn't have other parts of the running game that could spell head but it has it has flaws it is you know not front to back all eleven outstanding it's not like the best Florida defense we've seen in recent memory ahead night nice little big cuddle bear moment after the game so I remember the Kyle Trask is like six five he huge it doesn't look it as sort of talk to you have like okay we're GonNa find it easy ways to get balls to receivers and space or anything like that like they were if they did not have they did they they are asked hell at him and he threw three picks clemson some awful when I say that somebody who's watched a lot of Florida quarterbacks over the last decade some truly you on the road Florida's got

Indiana's Gonna Win the Football Game

"Broken. Doll. Pool Past Come to shutdown full cath you are listening to. The Internet's only college football podcast. And as always the CICADAS. Are Co, host, the CICADAS and other various nightlife. There's something in the background there that sounds like some sort of like howling. Mayhem do you hear it I so on my recording device have just figured out which nozzle it is that controls my personal volume and my personal volume also includes the creatures of the night so. Singer me. Now they come and go at at my whim. That is the that is the lowest voice of my co-host. Jason, Kirk Jessen, Kirk. How are we tonight with with all of your? Wilderness friends both Mr That's nice of you to ask end. I. Think my answer is. Over all living things. He's like Aquaman but for bugs. What a terrible terrible superhero that that for everybody. Okay. So like not ant man, but get it yet literally the AKRONS power to control fish, but you control Lake Beatles. Yeah roaches. Are crawdads subject to Ackerman's powers. I border line I would think that's like Godfrey. Let's like let's like Gulf Gulf man right. Lake. I don't I. Don't know if man can control rivers and Shit by day he's Todd Gulf the a mild mannered oil and Gas Baron Aquaman rivers and lakes see Great Lakes. Great Lakes Man is my favourite concept frogman because Great Lakes Man's like August, the Walleye. It looks like. As far as I can tell, Aquaman river and lake jurisdiction sort of comes and goes depending on the needs of the story. I mean he could probably figure out, figure it out a Gulf type creature. If you could control all the snapping turtles, you'd be a terrifying human just imagine being able to control like crop at crawdads at full run in a creek worst creek men. I want the Powers Creek men. Listen if he can control crawdads that man is public enemy number one. Crowd. There K. Mart at all. So I googled creek man and what I got as a wall of Google images that looks like knockoff Aquaman. Subdued with long hair beard covered TAT's who if I if I just glanced I would say, Oh, this guy's trying to be super touted aquaman. But his name is creek man what are the odds of that I? Wonder if it's just a destiny thing Creep, man's got some extremely problematic opinions. Let's just what I'm guessing. He's probably not politically allied with Aquaman. What I'm saying he's like a little bit of pollution's fine. Make you stronger. Make the call bigger. Holly, you're joining US tonight Yeah. Hey thanks guys good to be on the show. Yeah. Power you. I don't have dominion over all living things but other than that I have no complaints at this time, we'll work on that. I buy what making me talk about my football team. Do you think you can hurt me? I said living things. You should have gotten to me earlier man if you wanted to tell you if you wanted to hurt me the half dead would not be included. Not Not the first time we've said this on the show but Tennessee football is like third degree burn and yes, I. Know Whereof I speak. I. Can see that my flashes charred and pulling away from the bones nothing hurts. So. It was a great weekend for Tennessee football and for many other teams. Obviously but I do feel like we have one. Enduring, one salient theme to cover for the weekend. That was you promised me you were GonNa read the Kentucky box score allowed. I will read the Kentucky box score log bedtime store. It is on here during child and I'll read it to you. But there are there are marvels. This was a weekend of revelation marvel and wonder we just came from DC. So That's correct. Dumb comics. But instead, we're going to be covering things that I think might even be too fantastic for the comic world. Jason, it was a special teams weekend. That's right it. So ordinarily, football weekend, we could consider it a teams weekend. Because there are many teams, playing dozens and dozens of teams. In fact, this weekend more teams than usual as of late, we'll get to that. But not just for sheer quantity was the special. Teams weakened. In fact, it was the acts of the special teams themselves. That was truly special. Spencer you have dubbed this night of the Punter Naito. I thanked her. Night. Though, I think that income. Just punters. Night of the Punter rhymes. Yeah. It's like a reference to you know an old movie it's it rhymes. Shit don't worry about it. Yeah. Tough. The Punter and also the kicker and the morning of the Punter and kicker, and it's really an all inclusive special teams just go with it just go with it y'all. Listeners. Certainly feels like the twilight of several things doesn't it? It's It feels like if feels like the twilight of me ever watching Penn state again without thinking of she threaten me with a good time. A, very specific noise. and would be the noise of the missed field goal in the second quarter when at the very end of the half, it did they not have they never watched an Alabama football game. That's what I have a question because if you don't know. Congratulations Yeah Heaven. It seventeen seven going into the half Indiana is leading. If you've been asleep for the past forty eight hours. Let me tell you something Indiana is. And there's a plot twist at the end brother. But, we'll get to that in a second. There is one second on the clock that James Franklin has fought for and. Because again, he's never watched. Alabama play football and doesn't know what occurs to ask for that one second and Indiana has fumbled giving Penn. state the ball and a shot at a twenty five yard field goal attempt. which they take. And Miss. But not just miss I've never thought I could hurt a field goal being described as missed with Gusto. I. I don't really know quite what to tell you about what this exact noise is. I'm going to try to play it as loudly on my computer as I possibly can. So you can hear it. Is a gunshot. It sounds like sounds like a celebratory cannon. It sounds like one of the candidates in the eighteen twelve overture. It sounds so good stop mashing your face into the keyboard and we could ask our producer. If perhaps we could get some audio from this game. That's technology too much. Okay. I'd rather be meant straight from the Internet through three Mike's. Guest. The. It is the worst field goal attempt. I have ever seen not by missing, but by enthusiasm of not making it all I really thought the Goddamn upright with going to fall off. It made the best noise if if you're listening F s one and you actually Mike the Football and then put microphones inside. The UPRIGHTS, right. There's probably some somewhere who was like dude listen you gotTa Put Mike in the upright. If, it hits is going to be banging. It's going to sound like the end of the world dude. It's going to sound like a truck hitting garage made of other garages like it's GonNa sound awesome and that when that happened was like I told you I Gone I told you if you've ever backed not. Disastrously fast. But a little too confidently into a big concrete upright in a parking garage. You know this noise. Yeah. If you've ever heard the noise of a very closely miked garbage can hit. On a wrestling program that is this noise. Now when a team misses this badly. It with this much enthusiasm. Last time because I thought, I heard a noise this decisive before Mizzou South Carolina overtime two, thousand thirteen. If you'll remember South Carolina is about to lose. A Mizzou or about to tie and go to another overtime on the road against. Mizzou. And mizzou absolutely hammers the attempt against the Left Upright always left upright. And the noise that made was. Melodious is like own. It was like it hit big Ben itself as last time I heard field goal is good. What a delightful thing and instantly I thought, there's no way Penn state's winning the game after making a shot that hard this is all by way of saying the entire point of the story is not just that missed field goals that hit the upright and make it a tremendous thunk are amusing. But that I'm brilliant and I see things before they happen Jason, the night of the punter was not just limited to this. What else do we have L. my gosh where to begin So we have four items on here in terms of special teams treasures, and the number four is a key number because within our four, we have an additional for. The rice owls attempted a field goal fairly normal thing not that they don't tempt all that many of them because they usually aren't in range of one but. They did attempt one. And it to produced joint INC not as loud. At first as the Penn State doing however, it was able to multiply. It added to its number with a second, but it lasted quality at made up. That's right. It it it wasn't a cannon blast. It was it was a it was a three round burst but not just three, four, four round bursts battling gun a field goal attempt. Yeah I did go crossbar cross it went it went upright crossbar, crossbars that it went from. If you are watching from the mind's eye looking from the end zone out towards the field or from your television from your television from the angle that was broadcast from right behind right like if you're the net, it went left upright. Crossbar Right Upright Crossbar. And then short bounced onto the field and short now, at this point, we have to dredge up perhaps the oldest bit of full cast lower. We have ever had to drag up from the lake of our collective memory predating I think even the notion of the full cast itself was this an espn live rule might have been. Yeah. that. This was. The author of this rule it was me or doug or me and Doug in some combination that came up with this. But yeah, we had a set of we had a very early version of how would you change this game back in the Halcyon days of the early odds and? our contention was this that if you hit if you kick the ball and hit both uprights and the crossbar, you win the game. Yet. Like the gold would make game. It's like a snitch make things more interesting like teams like rice could just camp out in field goal territory should they be lucky enough to get that far? And just bring in the best trick shot kickers they could because it's way easier. To get a ball into a very large space then to get it into a poll let alone. Three polls loan three polls plus one bonus hit. I. Had one suggestion you have to call it. It's like a pull shot. Oh, I like that you gotta call it ahead of time, and then then you can get the ten points of the instant win whatever you like. I think you hit four I think if you hit three, it should be four. It all four you instantly when the game which. One or the game if you hit four call it or not that is a that's that's a conference championship. because. Nobody's ever done that before and also who cares who wins this conference I'm sorry. Did you can say that. What rises sunbelt correct. Oh. No. No I got it wrong yes. So now have shifted the the conference USA Legions who were upset with me. Now you have taken them onto yourself. So see you team team player. Team player. So yeah, who cares conference Moore say that's fine. Conference say fans would probably be like your I give it to. act like what is the collective conference USA mindset like you know? Like like, there's like ten people who root for the SEC these days like ten years ago it was it was it was thousands and thousands, and now there's just a few doors left to do it and I feel like Ironic ACC. FANDOM. Is a thing and like big ten phantom that that is big boisterous swelling but like. You know conference you like the massacre, the sun built you could be a Mac hive. You could be a land have been and certain year's. Conference USA that has got to be the one that. Is. LEAST LIKELY TO ATTRACT A. Conference specific homer. Because even the American you know even if it's FANDOM that is set up not so much as rooting for one thing as is in opposition to just a general power structure. That's probably where you're going to draw most of like the rooting for the underdog for the underdog sake crowd, right because the AFC fan they have it in their head that like whichever one of US makes makes it out of this whole is Gonna Drag the rest of us up out of it can. I so close I was GONNA ask is the American conference one that is the most listened son whatever you have to do to get out of this town. do it because the bottom ear his real low once you're down there hard Colombo, yeah. That's Cincinnati. Is Hell I? Think it's I. Think the the mindset is like you know as soon as one of us, makes it out. That's the path. We're we'll follow that. And then there's kind of the mountain west thing where it's like now, we're there's room for two conferences here and we're the second best so please. Here have a seat. We're going to be skiing in three months and three months. We will forgotten all about. This will be skiing. We have another one on this list that I think is absolutely magnificent that I will I'm going to ask because I only saw the play and it was I was gobsmacked when I saw the replay and that would be the Texas Tech Punt where. If I have this correctly. punting from one end zone clear through to the other. Almost? Yeah the. Officially Eighty, seven yard punt but in terms of actual distance traveled it was. Yeah. So he he launched his it from about the five and it goes. Over the West Virginia Turn Man's head and bounces into the end zone keeps bouncing I would guess it went at least one, hundred, ten yards for it stops rolling the all time record for this is going to be difficult to top because the all time official records from nineteen fifty, it was ninety nine yards by Nevada I believe But. Inter in just in terms of actual ground covered I I mean. Standards, it's not a huge wind. I mean total coverage on this point is over uttered yards. Yeah. Thank thing. Rolls off. Camera. Ball the volume literally. Making graceful exit? The ball could still be rolling for all. We know it's like a cartoon tumbleweed lubbock real flat it could go a long way. Somebody in New Mexico's like I saw the ball of Ramblin just kept on going over the horizon say it's still roams these planes role years later, just tips into the rocky mountains and then just rocks back and wrist in place Well. Hey there little fella needs some water. Yeah and then like Paul Bunyan punter picks it up and blasts it right back. Johnny Coaching Tree. Oh my Austin McNamara. Outstanding work. You know man that's incredible. Not often by the way for for the eight to nine Sickos I know who are all about punting? And by eight tonight I mean Robbie Kalland. Specifically People who they see the big punts just you know it's a special spark lights up in there is because they're deranged this for you and this is the this goes beyond like the big ten punting fan because like Eaton big ten fancy appreciate but you like it because no points or being scored referring to people who specifically like punting. Yeah this was seconds sickos. Disease does these perverts all of? Finally. There was tall. Finally there was in the Boise state game a punt that I didn't really think. I. Was going to ever see which is the rare punt to the direct back of the skull. Of the up man. This was like the quad. But with people. Yeah. Yeah. This was if you could you could not have done this on purpose right? Like it's just not possible but they. Boise's just blasted at the back of the head. And it went. Back the other way. So he to kicked it into an end zone. Not about the one, you want to kick it into. and not necessarily his entirely his fault. But I just want to know what the sensation was that young man said when he felt a football impact, the back of his head and he had to be like all the Sopranos Finale. Oh No. God because he may not know where the ball went but wherever it went, it was bad. At that moment. Happening was very, very much bad. I think. This concludes the night of the Punter I think we've been I think we paid enough respect? To are flexible. Talented Boys. Special teams. I made that sound way more Roddick than I had to. Appreciate it I. Mean we're talking about putting. So it's it's difficult to. It's difficult. It's difficult to capture the full eroticism anyway. I wanted to see if we could sort of combine a couple a couple of things tonight. Is this. Are you. You know what just keep talking You'll see where I'm going with this guy I hope not. Because if you don't know. Our. Our. sponsor. Is Home Field. That's right. Bring the crickets. Oh, Jesus Christ ventures got an ad read. It's not really an ad read. Ryan where are you is not really an ad read Ryan's off tonight. Is. The problem it's not really an ad read, but it kind of is because. What happened this week and Y'all. We flipped the script we are on our way. To eight Wendy Anna. That is correct. The dream of Wendy Deanna not logistically possible this year. Schedule itself. So only eight games all you gotta do is cut the neck out of those nine hundred tournament side down and where I'm like six Indiana Tube topor take a sharpie you just take eight. Or nine and discount I'm using the Sharpie to make mine into an inch Deanna. Yeah, we can do Eleven Indiana here. Oh Eighty eight no big ten, championship playoff, semi-final, national championship and. I was GONNA say why go small aim high so is he's punter should've done how `bout we then Indiana then joins the FCC Spring Ball. League. Let's Go for Twenty Wendy Anna. Okay then. They play in the NBA Twenty one, the Anna and then by the time that shit ends. Let's just count all of that as the same season. Gopher thirty, two, Indiana Infinity Anna. Yeah. It would only be fitting after a century of utility. That Indiana football went on like a seventy game winning streak that they've eaten in this heart. They hey they'd be downright futile in the cruelty they showed their subjects. Like Ohio State. You heard. Buckeye. It's on. That is correct. This weekend. Indiana water football game. So let's technically homefield AD. But itself if Indiana wins the football game Sorry Connor. No He's not no, he is. Not. He's hung over not sorry. No no one bit. No. Nor has anyone else who is an Indian football fan which constitutes I think at this point up most of the national media. I'm going to start in the tank for Indiana football. Yeah. We're feedings conspiracy on spiracy operating behind the scenes to pivot Indiana from regional power to college football super power very very far behind the scenes after all if we're going to be accused year after year week after week. of doing everything we can to lift up your team's enemies. And put down your team's allies. By God, we ought to actually try one year. I was overjoyed this. This was in a weekend of a lot of blowouts. There were a lot of extremely lopsided games. That did not necessarily provide. The anticipated or even inacceptable amount of entertainment. Right, there was like Alabama, Clemson both played in blowouts just nothing interesting happening there whatsoever the super weapon. It gained powers charging. Yeah it came. Alive lot charge a lot of friction there that builds up charge. It's like the Black Panthers suit the more punishment that you will into pit the more will release on someone later now you. So, instead of instead of the black. Panther suit it's The Sky Blue Panther. Pitt Panthers were actually no they were wearing the trash bag uniforms. Yeah humble greedy football team. Yet hit looked like storm troopers at Zuma class and Notre Dame looked like pit at practice. With. Shiny hats yeah. I mean I will say this, they were more like the lack panthers. This weekend God I did it I did it. But they will. Still charging and they will go off on somebody that was forty five to three. So obviously wasn't this weekend. But I'm saying in terms of actual competitive football in terms of suspense in terms of drama. I'm not even joking like like normally we would go Yeah Indiana Penn State, best football game of the weekend. No Real. You'll Indiana Penn. state was the best football game this weekend. Yeah. This was a barn burner well, Indiana Penn state I mean I feel like that often is count let's sixteen, two, thousand, eighteen and two, thousand nineteen. This game was had some high drama. There is an onside kick two years ago Indiana lead in two, thousand, sixteen like this is one I can't. So I have. Let's see. Nineteen Games over the last one, two, three, four, five, six years when Indiana has had some sort of a realistic chance to beat a top ten top twenty team whether it was a late lead or whatever nineteen. In Penn state features in here several times and it has finally happened. You either of you remember the genesis of our particular collective fascinated with Indiana which game it was because I don't other than a vague recollection that it was. Like somewhere in the twenty fourteen, fifteen range, the two thousand fourteen is the first year I have on here Indiana Ohio state that year Indiana lead number six Ohio state by six points. In the second half and then they lost by fifteen, and then basically the same thing happened or they they were leading Michigan state in the second quarter and then lost by forty points Twenty fifteen was the year really took off because that was like every year that was by then Indiana having the Internet nickname chaos team was pretty entrenched and that was the year where even came down to their ballgame. Against, the Duke the field goal that was daddy what I'm thinking yeah it was pretty clearly made good and if we'd had Jimbo lasers on top of those top of those uprights and perhaps we could have seen the Indian did actually deserve that victory. That's that's copyright copyright I'm already wealthy I'm on protect my money. Yeah. Jail Lasers. Yeah I did I did Sir I did. But yeah. So this has been six years of agony for the hoosiers. And what was it? What was the streak? Actually I have it. The stew. Losses against top teams. Forty one. And the last half decade most of them are agonizing. Longest such streak ever by a big ten team. Obviously doesn't really and rutgers but a, and you should know name ever first name what. So Indiana is should know completely unscripted in this game by getting an early lead despite having absolutely nothing in terms of offense. They still finished with. A total of two hundred and eleven yards. Of offense as a team that's counting overtime. Counting ot because this came did go into. So. I during this game when Indiana had eighty seven yards in the first half and was somehow winning. And like it wasn't even a bullshit turnovers thing because both teams had turnovers I was messing around on sports reference to find the last time a team finished with under two hundred yards and more than four hundred yards. And allowed more than four hundred yards and one anyway and the biggest disparity I could find on their this millennium was two thousand four. Oregon Losing despite out gaining a team by three hundred yards team at out gained was of course Indiana. I will also say that the before the final drive and ot, they had one hundred and eleven yards of offense. So. Through through the magic of field position turnovers, timely defensive play, and all around just W T.F NECE in all directions. Despite being out gained four, hundred and eighty, two, hundred eleven. On the final going into the fourth. They were still in the game. And then. The script for Indiana. As Connor Homefield like. Home Balls himself die hard Indiana Fan. Said Hey, this is what's going to happen. They're going to get a late score. We're GONNA blow it. That's the script. That's what he said before life decided to renew faith that had ever paid off for him. Because that's what Indiana did Indiana went and scored a touchdown to go up twenty one twenty. And then scored again, go twenty, eight, twenty and then for some reason, Michael Panics junior remembered how to pass the football. Completed, five passes on the final drive of the game getting them to to twenty six. Twenty eight and the converting the to pointer to make it twenty, eight, twenty, eight on that final drive had like three circus catches. At least it was just one of those drives where everybody decided they were going to catch anything thrown in their direction whatsoever. kind of beautiful and five yards. The drive also preceded by Penn state accidentally scoring a touchdown. The point at which Penn State head of which you know. It looks like there was a little bit of miscommunication. The player on the way in was clearly looking back at the sideline like she'll be taking a you know like. It seemed like a communication thing. You. Could do goes in Indiana signals such. Yeah. You could see like maybe should have made it a lot clearer. What was supposed to happen? But Indiana was on it it being a communication thing does not take away from the fact that it was very funny. Yeah. You can see him like it. kind of Flints like all. Making one of them at all because they were trying to do what they were supposed to be doing there. But that didn't happen in the fact that it didn't was very funny. Can I also say that and I'm sorry Jason the Falcons really bailed everyone on Penn state out on this by doing it in a professional game today. The scoring when you clearly when the defense wanted to score because Yeah Indiana was relieved that Penn state would ahead and scored and extent of the game they weren't cheering like the Detroit lions for the Detroit lions defense was cheering when Todd Gurley score today. Yeah I mean. Yeah. There are no. Need for apologies here I am delighted to get the chance to talk about how stupid my favorite football team is. Also also did the professional football player in question also do the exact same cycle of. We'll. Thing is as as Roger posted, we know Todd Gurley knows this rule or this strategy because. Twice in his professional career, he has done the thing where he's like gone down at the one to preserve the lead and not give the other team the ball like he knows the smart thing to do he just kind of tripped and then he falls down and he's laying on the goal line and he's just motionless like if I stay here, I, don't think. They don't ever roll me over. They'll never know the ball is. Like Todd, Gurley had the right idea. He just physically pull it off. With Penn State, it was more just like no one talked about this. But in a penn state, my favorite part of it is if you watch it Indiana number thirty one. is at the eight yard line is Penn State's guy is at the two and you Indiana number thirty one just starts printing because he realizes I'm GonNa Shove that dude into the end zone. A little light bulb go off. You can. See. His feet. You're like sonic. The hedgehog? Like Oh shit this is going to rule I'm going to. A start right. and. As he gets there, he's the first one to hold up the hand to signal touchdown. So. Yeah. Indiana number thirty, one was on the ball. And it worked it worked. And at this point Penn state goes from one. Little. I read. So so in the in the discord we got a bunch of smart folks in there. And Spencer and I were like what the fuck are you doing and all of our smart friends. Are saying like, no, actually this is the right move and I don't know something. We. May perhaps perhaps going for one was a smart move but somehow we we sense that no, this is this Indiana football game. There is no such thing as smart here you paid for to. Yeah. I didn't really I don't get the reasoning for doing that maybe because I am not one of the smart people and also this is a disagreement on a philosophical level right this. People asking, did you guys not do the math and you asking did you not do the reading right like okay sure. However. This is an Indiana football game and it is also. James Franklin the Penn State team in a late game situation which can be kind of. Free. Wheeling. I such a notorious micromanager yeah. Yeah Can be a little dodgy in terms of of how it gets executed not in the sense of Oh he goes for it on fourth down but sometimes sometimes just for James, Franklin just likes to freestyle on it sometimes just likes to. Do Little Improv with the numbers at the end of the game it's happened before and based on this it's going to happen again. So, I don't know analytically sure. Go ahead make it an eight point lead at. There's one thing. I. Love. It's free styling from the guy who's idea of free styling is to put out milk on his coffee. Almond milk. To, listen live it. That's why they'll never succeed the big ten. I think maybe my thing is I just think everyone should always go for two and then we wouldn't have to think about it. What's the overall? Optimal. Strategy Galaxy. Brain disease. So they. Get too. Ot. And Penn state scores down on the first possession of overtime. Are on the as they score one and then Indiana scores. And when Indiana scores they decided to go to, I will point out that for any other team going for two at home. Not, the call but wisely Tom Allen again. Being the person who did the reading and not the math said no, hell no. WE'RE INDIANA. Headed this now. We got I'm scared. Let's keep them scared I mean to me the logic of it is like. All right. All our guys are three stars. All their guys are forced on. Let's have this come down to one play. Instead of ten plays the longer where out here the more we die that's basically approach. And I, love it. And then Michael Panics. Enters the end zone on a two point conversion with. No controversy. No. Luckily incident I can't stand like of all the things that I've gotten. So completely over, there are two things one people and I've mentioned this people who take screen shots that you. Charge your phone dude I'm like you're dull and persistent the worst to things. Like that's that's I. Hate that the second biggest charger phone I should the second thing. I absolutely despise strangers doing is trying to argue an officials decision with me. Because because I know other people one might say, Oh, I had nothing to do with that call shut them down really quickly by saying that they're right and that you will corrected immediately one do anything about it to not just tell them you can. But but fundamentally, what people need understands I don't care. Like I really don't like if official makes a roll-call, I'm like Oh. Cool. Good. That's more chaos I. Hope you're mad. It's a better story I love this. That's great. Yeah are you angry did set something on fire? Is this a great injustice to you total stranger invested in football team that I really don't care about? This this. I can't do anything about it. Anyway if you're making, you know if you're putting your whole ass on the Internet. Life's life's better for me. Spencer's really easy to anger online. You can reach him on twitter at ESPN S. at thirty eight. Godfrey. So like and also we're talking about a very cool thing here like this wasn't some shit where it's like very prestigious boring did the. Hours on the line you know like this wasn't boring or like or like. Did the guy get off the field in time before this ball snapped look like no, this is the coolest fucking thing you've ever seen like. There instantly within fifteen minutes, there are like five competing Sistine Chapel photo shops. And that's a good sign that you've really done something athletic if that happens. Also like the officials would have upheld that call no matter what the call in the field was because there was no way of determining whether they were right or wrong based on the visual evidence available. Okay and evolve the things I hate of all the mistakes that you made of all the decisions you could have possibly made in that game to come down to a single, very difficult to call officiating thing to get mad over that. No. Get. Mad over three turnovers get mad over letting Indiana win when they had. Again, two hundred eleven, yards of offense. That's not on the officials. This on, you don't ever don't ever let it come down to the rules. Indiana Harder Indiana's Ventura hard for a long time and Penn stay home on your this stupid shit was going to happen at some point. You do this every year you might as well get it out of the way. Also, it was a good call. Got The ball across. As the knows we often say, yes good and actually if you don't like to call too bad because it's forever now. Sales Yeah, I have a lot of sympathy for officials to because God have to college football fans. You know they have to do this. Has Changed you have to do this in real time. Kids this. That was good. You have to work after work in the SEC bought me off. I was actually giving you an opportunity to promo the show because I think you have yet to say. That I'm on thinking out loud every Monday night on the SEC network at seven PM Eastern. With my co hosts Richard Johnson Elissa Lang and Brandon Boykin the Georgia legend himself you should tune in Dvr. Record series if if you like SEC plans but only if you like absolutely. Yes sec plants like myself. That's there. That was good. Thank you. That was excellent. So. Yeah. Indiana one. Doesn't matter what the officials say Indiana one. One, you can take it up with thirty eight. Godfrey if. Don't like call and Work God or God get what you call. God talk about that. He loves this stuff I, don't. Jason. What else happened. Did we want to do the Homefield ad? Because you're. A. Good? No, we will not was Homefield ad that was the homefield that whole WanNa save that for Thursday. We'll save that Ryan. Yes. I was just going by the document. That's. No we'll see if that we'll save that for the Wednesday just document document document. Yeah you're shared on it. All right. Well, it's time to yell about the big ten then. Oh, sweet. Nebraska, got football back hedge like that hanging on hanging. We're heading out to the the the lonesome midwestern prairies them and bring in the creatures again. Sufficient. Stevens. Play. Pretty good. I'd do that like Max volume like dog walks by farts or something. That would that would also be very big ten would be too much cheese Dadfar football. This talk talk but hitting the provolone hey, you guys sound like Dan and Jim. Dandy Jim had a really good weekend. Or to beloved. Football? Uncles. After listening to them was extremely soothing. The first dear door brandstatter broadcast Michigan football this year. A triumphant victory over the Minnesota Golden Gophers for the Michigan wolverines called by Dan Beard or if Jim Brandstatter Calling from an empty Michigan Stadium, this is my favorite setup. Of any broadcast team in the nation ever that the game was in Minnesota and they're like, we're going to call it in the stadium. Which one Michigan's the Games not there so We know where all of our stuff is. Yeah. That's where I left my headphones. We're GONNA record it. There was awesome. They watch the game on like a big. They watch the game on like an enormous TV had their spotters everything say it looks ideal. It looked awesome. Right. There are just like, yeah this is my house to stadium will how sure are we that they don't live there Non Entirely where I'm. Land on this I think they have twin bed set up in the back like burt and Ernie. Why would they call it the big house if it's not a big house It's got bathrooms. It's got shares could see a Michigan grabbing. The couldn't call it that if it was ally. Could they? Yeah it's on the syllabus. Yeah that's it. Legally they just couldn't do it. That's Michigan Law. Michigan by the way Michigan absolately. Michigan. Michigan plastered the Gophers Forty, nine, twenty, four or Joe Milton look good. That's the Hawk zone man like that offense actually looks Kinda like it was supposed to look with shape patterson and it never really never really took off but yeah, they like it's not like Minnesota, didn't have their guys looking good It's just Michigan absolutely destroyed them. Including including a big man touchdown when a free rusher obliterated. Tanner Morgan, he coughed the ball up directly to the heads of it onrushing lineman. Just probably the most. The. Most beautiful play, not involving a punter or kicker this weekend. Probably that strip sack fumble touchdown of Tanner Morgan. Of Minnesota but yeah, they looked awesome. And Dan Dan Jim were thrilled even though at the end they did bicker a little bit. They did have this beautiful that was about and they did discuss. they were discussing the concept of what is or is not a rhetorical question, and then it led into one of them. Deciding that it was okay to let off steam at the end of a game and kind of take off the break and Jim. I believe arguing that they're still coaching to be done and then they got completely distracted right after the snap with like. One. Minute left in the game a saying Jim. Harbaugh is not wearing Khakis here they this is a trend. He's got I. Think those are Lululemon, decided it was Lululemon pants for men which frankly horrifies me on. Behalf. They're cozy. There's Lulu. Lulu Yeah Oh shit. Lululemon said French. Lou. He was wearing Lululemon trust them with our fries. That's it was. I really felt like you know. College football back was still weird but. But having having having Jim Dan. Having Dan. Point, Dan saying I'm not speaking to you. When an old hand sister to the roll man I'm not speaking to you. Oh, that's when the conversation has gotten. Really Really Sublime Sharak. Time. Oh Yeah. We did get a sack time to it was do we got three in a row at one point? Yeah. What else one of them said we have said we have a firm grasp on the hand of the little. Brown jug they actually had two separate arguments during the game over what did or did not constitute rhetorical question. Why Now? Michigan is back. That's like actually kind of A. Complicated argument. Yeah. That's like they had time because again, the shellacking YEA SHELLAC time. Show our time. This was also the weekend where. Nebraska did get what they ask for. They got turned football boy did they make a whole lot of? They also, my favorite part of this game was. Let's see figure out what the exact score was at the time. It was ago thirty eight fourteen in the with about eighteen minutes to go and Nebraska to culminate a seventy two yard drive. Boats a twenty two yard field goal. Well they said, they want a big ten football back. So after all that all after all that football. Scott Frost decided. Okay. WHOA. Whoa it's easy there. That's an football. Hey Jason did they after that? They went on fifty two seventeen? Ohio state did. Yeah, Ohio State kept scoring. Yeah. How's Ohio State. State wanted to play. Yeah. Just in fields missed one pass. How many did he throw twenty one? Twenty twenty one and the one pass they missed was a well thrown touchdown that was broken up by. Submarine The wide receiver in the end zone, banging his shoulders and head against the turf dust dislodging the ball otherwise and easy td for Ohio. State and he's twenty one of twenty one on the day, I? Think he'll get over. It seems fine. They looked awesome. This is not going Oh. So surely, this will come down to Michigan Ohio state because I don't think that Michigan fans can really take that in terms of cardiac loader stress on their nervous system but. But I'M GONNA go ahead do that because you're gonNA. Do it anyway because you had a good weekend. I know what you need Michigan, fans. You need this to be complicated by existential dread. So there you go. It's GonNa put that in your body. Cruise into the Ohio state game with with no hope. No Hope I secretly hope. Well not just that get past rutgers. Records. On a Goddamn. This was a great weekend from Michigan Football undefeated rutgers. State had seven turnovers I think. So Michigan state I feel like your problem. Is You tried to beat the team from New Jersey with a quarterback named Rocky Lombardi. A double agent if I've ever seen one. Sleeper. Cell. Just. A he he only through two picks. So only two turnovers for his fault but. daft. But they all the other five or the other five and the other two turnovers on downs. So really if you Nine. With effectively nine turnovers nine drives that ended with here take the ball. So you can't exactly call them turnovers but they're not exactly contesting the giving the ball over. Overs there give over. So yeah, nine nine possessions in that game. It's actually kind of a miracle given all that that the score wasn't more lopsided. That's that's what makes me think like what? Michigan State. They're probably not that bad at rutgers rutgers probably this good. Well fortunately records very normal time next week because they're playing ranked Indiana. What is this game a? Let's see Indiana's highest ranking since Jesus Nine, hundred, ninety, three. This is not good. This is. No. Indiana and here's a sentence. All right. Here's a sin if. Of Beets Rutgers this will be their highest ranking since nineteen, Ninety, eight, nineteen, eighty-eight, their. Self styled self styled entrepreneur and self-employed Gentleman Indiana has just won the lottery. What shall become of his winnings Can Push this into the top ten that'll be the first time since nineteen sixty-nine. Let's just get Indiana the top ten and then after that. It's all gravy. Records and then Michigan if you can do those two you might be in. Argued beat Michigan Yeah, and you know Michigan fans it like every single year they circle this somebody's sitting around a survey Michigan fans from the off season when it was like, what is the scariest trap game winning all set Indiana. Well, how much scarier is it now? So. There we go. I think we've supplied Michigan fans with like ample dread. They're feeling much better now. This is this is by the way nothing but nothing but good for Indiana right. Because now Michigan's like Oh, we gotta take him seriously. As. Opposed to like Oh. Yeah we're GONNA laugh him off maybe we should take them seriously guys. You know stick of seriously in the back of their head, they're like. Still. Feel, like we're in Michigan take something seriously it's like all like all in their head like fumbling and sweating and. Staring got. Like works its way all the way back around to like Oh. God. It's Indian. GotTa gotTA. Pass this test Jesus. Like like the thing that will actually carry them through the mental edge at all like they'll make plenty of mistakes. It'll just be the fact that like all of the guys I'm Michigan run a tenth of a second faster. Like I, didn't even want to score the touchdown something. We wanted to embrace failure and humble myself before everything that I had considered an expectation or a standard, but I'm just faster. I mean that is what happened to Penn state they they did try. I think at one point Penn state really did go like Oh. God. Oh God. This is Indiana. WE'RE GONNA lose to them like that. That went through their head. that. Had to be it exhilarating moment painful one but an exhilarate one light. It was like when Florida finally lost to Kentucky. The thought was host is really happening. Cadillac poop in your pants to like. Okay. This real name when your pants like after a certain amount of time. There's a reason. Like like Florida Kentucky First Time In twenty five years or whatever and then pooping your pants for the first time in twenty five years or whatever Oh. Yeah. You're like well, time is a big factor here, right? Yeah. It is either way you're like Ha. I mean it's not as bad as I thought it would be how bad as I remember it being. Still. Very bad. The needs to be a word for that, which is it up a lot on this show. Again, they're they're. They're mostly legumes and sugar free. Sugar Free Sweeteners Oh right. The sugar free mementos incident. How could I forget orbital's source tells the demon when I wrestle with it I lose. Speaking of wrestling just interest. Speaking of wrestling with demons that you lose to. I just wanted to mention one thing. Northwestern Western northwestern beat Maryland by forty points northwestern who had trouble scoring like four points last year. They scored forty three against Maryland and I am just taking this opportunity to say I don't think Maryland's GonNa win another football game this year. I think the date there shots fired at Alex Kirschner. They are real bad. This is a very bad football team. Like. Stunningly bad football team I feel like Alex successfully Reemerged as a pit fan you know like, yeah, we know where you went to school but. We don't hold it against. Yeah. Yeah I mean in my mind, it's funny I always think of Alex Pitt Fan even though I know Maryland Fan but I mean come on it's fine. My school against me. Well I mean, we're all pit fans. This is true. This does United States. Yeah. So well, we hold Florida against you and Ryan all the time that's different. We're consequence free pit fancy which I love because we can just go like. Blasted this weekend you guys were pit bulls were all the fun and as soon as things go wrong we're like, Oh hey, your babies cry and pit is. Child like the way you WanNa be for your child when you're like, Hey, listen man I'll bet on even if you never went race look, we made that with fit. Well, we've done this with pit for years and we get dissipate doing it for many years to come. I Love I love you even if you never even if you never. Think you mean even though you never make even if. I think it's because you never make it. Here we go. Yeah. Yeah. But yeah. That's this all on to say Merrill's not winning because they are they gave up thirty one first downs. Northwestern they turn the ball over four times that even if they score touchdown all four, those they still lose tragically in this game. Absolutely horrendous. They're going to get killed by rutgers. Might be real. We might have done that. The only other big ten thing I. wanted to mention this that I watched the Wisconsin Illinois game on. Thursday night James Lord Itis. Is Color, commentator He's real good at his job. Even, though yeah, he does look like Scandinavian detective actually that's a pretty cool look. He just also it looks like a Scandinavian detective, but he looked but yeah, he's he's awesome like the big ten network he's like baby he's like baby spielman. I have one big ten network, trust yes. I. Think it's real weird that A. Daily men grown up here now go back out. or at least have the American. Flag Tie I know, right? Yeah. It is it feels like they've sanded down his edges and that's that's not the fluffy haired Prince, we fell in love with. Yeah also. Grammar he's okay. Tested positive one positive test for covid nineteen. This Wisconsin's quarterback just like, wow, Wisconsin is quarterback and immediately positive for covid nineteen. How'd that happen What else we got? Well. We. Offer. which I know Auburn one. Is that the right word for that what did this again Auburn scored more points Auburn accepted terms. Of Disengagement. K.. Against, speaking. Fair speaking speaking of does if it was like a I think Auburn. Settled its case out of court. No low to auburn plead no low. Investigation is ongoing. Late in this. Game Auburn. An Auburn returner. The ball hits his hand like. I don't there's no other way to interpret the had actually bouncing and shaking. As the poll flies by then the ball hit his hand. All the way to the end zone and a recovery that would have given Ole Miss Mrs Score is instead a touchback. Is that fair to say? I think yeah. Like hit dudes Pinky. Yeah On. The Internet Zapruder's at NC alive but yeah. Every new is very mad about this was very fixated on the Pinky. This which Auburn this is auburn benefiting from a call. In case you don't believe all of our talk of the realities of Auburn Jesus who again, it's very real and loves. You now you loves Auburn of the exactly when thing yeah he loves Auburn football actually offer Jesus not really there for basketball all the time times. Sometimes So I. Mean I feel like Ole miss the complaint soared went out the window. Sousa gave a fifty eight yard touchdown pass with one minute to go. Yeah. Along with a two pointer. Once that happens I'm not really worried about the Pinky all that much all teams seemingly remained the same forever. And just in terms of their basic nature Auburn, itself will get a call that. Benefits them. and is perhaps not accurate or accurately called. But that's okay. Because ole miss will lose all grounds for said, complaint by making a huge mistake just seconds later. Which I think is pretty neighborly of them. Also considered also by squandering a time management on the last. Drive so badly that lane kiffin finished at a time out pocket. Yeah It was A. Camera Jim this for store credit. Listen to electrical bill selectric fills late flow heavy this week, and I can give you a time out for. Maybe some gift certificates Chinese at Sharper Image. Yeah, one of those massage chairs. The. I I also would say this to that Mrs.. Coach. Probably has like bookstore endowment right. We're like a Sky Mall Endowment Sky Malls probably closer. Yeah I'm thinking also like. Maybe. Billy. Reed just makes your shirts right Selena Gif and has all these shirts that he's not wearing because he's like I got all these old miss. Baseball shirts up I'm just gonNA wear these because you'll notice people are like all that. So Cool Lane kiffin wears Miss Baseball jerseys coming off the bus and I'm like that was clean. It was clean. It was free was clean. He gets all these don't have a life that was the clean shirt look at. Look, at a lot of coaches and they're like man, they're wearing some really cool gear and you're like, yeah, that's. because. They've cultivated a look. Have you met these guys? Yeah. No No, no. No, they did not cultivate a look. They got that in a box and they've been living out of it for the past week. I believe Matt. Rule not only cultivated look but has brought it back. He's wearing the the market now that was his wife didn't we determined the his wife pick that out or did she make him stop wearing it back is back He's loose. Yeah. He's got a -Til smock it. Until -til tactical combat smocks. I. Have Not seen this for myself and I'm so excited to lay eyes on it. Yeah it's amazing. He's look a commandant in the Pastelle Army. He's like someone trying to camouflage himself hiding in the nineteen nineties. South Beach X., Ray Tech. You won't be able to find me at a mall am laying on. Coastal Carolina's turf. She's practically invisible. One, more thing for that Auburn game by the way everyone how Bonex really play with it himself and he's fixed. It was all miss. I mean yeah. He Clean Game Foot. If you think this is if you think this is a corner. That that's been turned hairs Garner. Yeah. Cult call someone who cares because Each week, the key, the key is this the bone excuse this each week he generates interesting content this week that content was. Giving Ole miss a fifty, eight yard touchdown with a minute ago. Next week who knows what it'll be a couple of weeks ago it was inventing the backwards spike and it's very fitting for a guy whose name sounds like an APP. Also are we talking about having not running back named tank? WHO's good? Tank big. These also didn't I bring him up last week. Yes. Told that he was unremarkable I was incorrect in saying. That so a correction has been issued and an apology made. To me not to you personally apologised tank o politics tank big always always side of politics to the Fella named tank. That just seems like a policy. You apologize to tank Mr Tyke. So sorry. Yeah it's just keep running up there with Jupiter get off that swing set. We ll apologize to tank right now apologize tank. I want to give you a number. And over or under, you can play along know the answer. Because I just want to say this out. Loud. Kentucky did they run? Over or under forty five total offensive plays. against. Missouri. I know this already. So I'M GONNA give us Jay Jason Forty five, four, five over under. Will you put the answer in the show notes did I. I will I will pretend I don't know. Then I'll say surely it was over we did Jason was under Oh shit under. Way under as a night under that puddle because Kentucky ran thirty six. That's like that's down there. It's like a perfect game in baseball. You know like one one pitch swing out. A pitch swing out. Here's the sick thing. You could do twenty twenty-seven play. Baseball game. Here's the part where I pay off Holly. By reading patiently through that bullshit a couple of weeks ago. That's right which I told you I was going to happen. Yep which made me sit through it anyway Yup. I'm going to read the Kentucky get a little punishment. I'm going to read the Kentucky box score. This bombed my soul. Thank. Okay. Because by the way Mizzou. Ten. When I read the box score, you're going to say how to Mizzou. Hundred three. It's actually kind of a miracle that Kentucky kept this two thousand ten because. I als- Kentucky had eight Missouri twenty-six. Third Down Efficiency. Kentucky went to for nine. I'm. surprised. That seems high. Considering, how bad they were on offense. Passing. Kentucky had forty seven yards of passing. That's four seven. Surely this was an army or navy s display of passing as a utility of last resort for a rush. I offense. That's pilot yardage. No, no. No. They had ninety eight yards rushing. Nine. Eight That is correct. They averaged three point six yards a pass. Three. Point. Six. This is fine when Tennessee spotting seventeen points. That would be fine. But MIZZOU. Wasn't. Mizzou MISSOULA's was doing fine. They had carb as like two hundred, one yards passing they and they had two hundred, twenty yards rushing because roundtree was a monster. But who had like thirty seven carries for three point, four yards H.. So in other words he was averaging about as much as Kentucky was per pass per rush. He was a absolute force for zoo By the way you surely go man maybe Kentucky a troubled penalties now clean gay man. One penalty for ten yards. And they didn't turn over that. Was it. and. They were somehow at seventeen ten late in this game or a seventeen ten with just one score between them Mizzou somehow in the fourth quarter or amount for you. Mizzou. You're welcome. Does not the crowning they were clearly so They were so footsore and weary with their trampling of the rocky mountains. That the planes of Missouri proved too lofty to. Scale. Even I, don't believe this. I got one more thing. It's the crown jewel this box score. Go right ahead. Time of possession now. Kentucky had the ball for sixteen minutes and fifty cents out of sixty. Oh no no. In my opinion. That's suboptimal. Mizzou is my favorite team this week. Because after Kentucky just like. Slowly force-fed fed everyone. Absolute garbage football as part of the game plan like Oh. Yeah. We're going to slow this down going to give you so much terrible offense. You won't be able. We're going to run the clock Mizzou was like Oh really oh, really. Oh, that's cool. We're GONNA do the same to you. Read hold the ball for forty three minutes. Four. Dare you do something how many minutes was that? Sixteen fifty four Kentucky Forty, three, ten, four. It looks like Illinois, the crown this week with sixteen thirty, two time of possession. They had the ball for a quarter. How'd that go? Well. All of the numbers affirm that. That's the that's the cross fit. Offense listens to short workout. High intensity interval offense they arm. Guys gotta the feel got off. Alright. Keep the intensity. Thirty seconds thirty seconds off. The. Bottle off. Entity Illinois offense ago. Meanwhile Johnson is like. All we're just warmed up and we can do this. All Jerry. You got about an hour warm up. And then there's the post war up. And you'RE GONNA. Start workout. And then you're going gonNA need to cool down The old man workout there just over there on the foam roller like bird another ten minutes on this baby. Real stubborn went in there. That's not Always like give you bought in bulk. got a punt. Got PUTT. Three reps and then go no higher than three RABS. Three reps and then then you punt that's it. That's maybe four Reps. We don't want to do this for size we don't want to get to swell. This is this is the maximum impact. Illinois Cardio. So we can spectacular. Where's Illinois they're like they quit three hours ago they only did this for like ten minutes I'm picturing like a ground level camera that captures like. And hundreds of pairs of slightly scuffed white new balances. Who boy these do support the foot though don't they so good. I didn't even know they still made British. Nights. Wisconsin. Marathon.
