I know you jumping on food, but if you look back at it wasn't until probably, I would say Prince where they really started like focusing a ton on the halftime show. Like a lot of times it was Group of performers. The You made a comment all fair, I forget. Which group you sad marching band, So it wasn't until that long ago that the halftime show started to become what it is now. Well, they tried a bunch of different things, and they tried bit like Disney. Disney had produced a number of halftime shows. I was looking at all this yesterday. That's why I saw the I had seen the clip of the Blues Brothers one and it's There were all these big production numbers, and then they decided they were going to start focusing on Mork concert like Performances and more classic rock kind of things. That's why you saw Springsteen and Tom Petty and you, too, and Prince and you know you can categorize Princess and Prince and a number of different ways. This is one of the most memorable halftime performances for me ever. So it was. It was unbelievable to watch that one are we've got that We'll talk about the food and all the other stuff on the other side, But when we come back after the news, we are going to Go to a brewery. She hasn't done enough outside of us. Now, this one's one that you guys might be able to debate a little bit Jim Belushi. Yeah. So I was wondering if he was gonNA come up because I've. There's been some movies that I really liked. Jim Belushi MR destiny was a good one. Mr Destiny was really good but I think he's in the shadow of his brother. So that's a little tougher. Committed L.. Movies I like him I would I would give him a yeah because I think he's a solid guy. Yeah I don't know if he was good in certain live but I certainly think he had a decent career I would say, yes, he had his own Sitcom. It lasted a long time whether it was good or not. And I I can't I'm not gonNA argue the outside of SNL at all because I think he's done at a fine career. It's the it's that he was only on SNL for two seasons and it remember on and his and his brother his brother died you know right before he joined her right way. Anyway, so is eighty three to eighty five when he was on. So I think that's a good debate gary that I'm thinking of his post S. L. O. Career. Yeah. Giving him in there. But if I can't think of one character he played or one skiff he's in his Serta live. Is that necessarily? Should he count I think that's why we would exclude him because. Has To be both. A run into some other people on this list that are giant stars that were nothing on us and l., and according to what is was an earlier parameter. Wise. They would. They would read good point. That's an interesting idea. Those that you know snl probably gave him the springboard you know they went on their did get a whole lot but got their face off there. Then when they got off of US and they'll they were successful was brother probably gave him the springboard well, yeah he did I mean that's for sure. He was in a he was in a lawyer show to that was set in Vegas. That only lasted one season I remember really liking him in that. More dramatic role yeah. Good stuff. The my niece was on that show. So obviously, the next one is going to be John. Belushi and..

"It's the blues brothers the celebrated with pester them the region's Jim Belushi will join us in our mission from god starts tonight it'll G. here continuing the conversation with associate professor of history at Northwestern University Kate Macer and we are talking about Juneteenth the history behind Juneteenth and the reconstruction era which is after the civil war and Kate you know it's interesting that you say it's some you mentioned how something could be signed in Washington and it could be signed by the president the proclamation to be signed but then that doesn't mean that necessarily it's gonna be easy you know it's going to be what happens all across the country I want to ask you like what do you think about what's happening right now in terms of you see even larger you know big corporations right now all coming out with mission statements also do you know changing branding and do you what do you think about that you know I think it's interesting it's it's sort of it's sort of very American right it seems like at this particular moment after a lot says controversy about brands relationship Q. black protest you know if you sort of think about that Colin Capra neck and that that story and Nike and what have you he gets kind of like the floodgates have opened and now on every I went to my online shoe retailer the other day and there was like a banner across the top being you know we support the movement for black lives I mean I think it could be I think it could be worse you know it's it's but it doesn't it's easy it's a relatively easy thing to do what is much harder is to figure out with the old ways of attacking and remedying injustice right and so it's kind of easy for that kind of stuff to feel super special or very symbolic if you don't find that behind it are you know real investments in for example hiring and promoting African American employees or making sure that you know people are paid fairly or making sure that people have access to good education and you know and so I think it's it's just interesting and and similar at least you know the embrace by so many different corporations and other entities of Juneteenth excel six you know I think it's too early to tell where this movement is going but it's certainly very interesting movement because it has been joined and sort of bought into by these incredibly powerful entities in American culture the question is what happens in action right yeah I didn't know if then you know sort of the psychological shift that's not only happening with you know people that Americans but then also the fact that actually corporations usually really only worry kind of about revenue and stockholders if that if that means that that this is going to be some real change but you say it's kind of like you have to wait and see yeah I mean this may be their judgmental about what's good for revenue and stockholders right but if that is the case that is also interesting because you know we haven't had a critical mass of powerful mostly white Americans who think it's important that their company or whatever he makes a statement like that so again I don't think this I think you will want to see what that what's behind those statements what kinds of real changes in terms of you know equity itself and really moving resources around come along with the statement well I'm wondering professor if he you know to go back sort of you're one of your areas of expertise the reconstruction era was there a moment or do you and if course you you would know you know it was there a moment where you think as a historian man if that had just gone the other way or if they had if this hadn't happened then maybe we wouldn't be I'm having as many difficulties as we're having right now yeah I mean there are a lot of it's the complicated moment they're they're kind of very at all if you know if you want to put it that way but and I can't the thing that I that I can never really get out of my head is because of you know what happened during the construction of the US government passes and states ratified three new constitutional amendments the amendments and slavery they declare that everyone born in the United States in the sedan they insure federal protection for civil rights and then they are racial discrimination in voting right if those had been in for N. F. basically white southerners had been willing to follow the law the new lan that would have been a very different story but that's not what happened right so first what happened did basically across the south white southerners virtually refused to say they don't think that the entire new regime that attempt to reconstruct the nation on a long lines of greater equality they don't believe it's legitimate and they they just refuse to accept that and so they make the cost of enforcing it incredibly high like basically your government is enforced with putting troops on the ground every time you know there's violence at elections whites are killing black people are threatening to kill them if they vote and in order to stop that the only force that can really neat the white violence is army the U. S. army and so the cost of enforcement is so high that eventually the government at that time Mr publican party in power decide they cannot keep doing it it's just it's too costly for them both mainly in terms of like that they were gonna end up losing elections back at home and so that's the pivotal point and and it probably is too much to hope that you know white southerners would have fallen into line after losing the war and said you know we we not only lots of war and actually read basically boss but also we're now gonna follow federal law okay I actually think it would that would that would have changed quite substantially so yeah that's you know it's pretty shocking to think about because the level of lawlessness the level of just complete disregard for the law in a community right to like a beast the people who who did that stuff never were prosecuted at the time and never to this day you know has really been it's never really been kind of fully aired out and discussed how the construction was brought down by white southerners now is this area of history I mean how do you feel about like high school history textbooks like I mean is this an area of history that just weed as a general generally Americans don't know enough about war we're we're not taught enough about it or how is it doing anything so yeah I you know I have a lot of I worked with high school teachers I have a son who just finished high school and you know high school teachers are up against a lot there's a huge amount you're covered there's certain you know there are standard there cried line I would love to see more attention to the dead end high school curriculum but there's so many things competing for attention that being said there are a bunch of relatively recent kind of innovation from nonprofit groups and things like that that are interested in high school and teaching curriculum that are now available to high school teachers who want to focus more on the so it's been really encouraging to see some of that stuff come out I mean I within the last few years there's been a growing focus at least among some people in trying to get more history in the school of first it's a very contentious period in our nation's history and and and I think there's a lot of as you say misunderstandings in that in that era as well and you've been really fighting to make sure that there were the I'm like there's a national historical park act to sort of save these important physical places in the room that were important in the reconstruction era yeah I mean as you're kind of implying there for a long time the history of reconstruction was told in a completely incredibly biased and frankly white supremacist manner and so there are a lot of misunderstandings about the period particularly among older generations of people who are in that kind of earlier Jim crow version of the story and then there are a lot of younger people who just really don't know much about it at all and and meanwhile in our National Park Service on which is a huge purveyor of historical information to the American public and keep people from abroad to their tons of national parks there actually historic site there were no even though the National Park Service runs most of our civil war battlefield there were no site that were devoted to interpreting reconstruction and so I was involved with a bunch of other people in an effort to try to push for at least one National Park Service site dedicated to remembering and teaching about this history of reconstruction and president Obama signed that into law by executive declaration right before he just a few days before leaving office so there is a national reconstruction monument now in our reconstruction after like that I think you for our South Carolina and a couple years later it would need it's status change to a national monument to national park and now in the works is a network of reconstruction site so I hope and I think it.

"Think that you could probably get some retired. Better. Trading aspect that. I like. What happened to tackle the kit? You that the guy winning attack? The placement does. Yeah. But it's different. You know, kids going to think twice about going after trained police officer. Then, you know, Mr., you know, Mr. Mr. teacher, who I know, you know, and he just happened to leave the gun around or I was able to get the gun from him. Or you know, what I mean, especially today. I mean you ever see the videos of like fights break out in the classroom and the teachers on allowed to do anything or there's one video of where a big kid grabs. A teacher's us throwing them around the room and the teachers not allowed to do anything. You know? Yeah. So I mean, who's to say that he's not going to be able to get the gun at the principal Jim Belushi where he beat the hell out of the student that doesn't happen anymore. In the school. That would be a great deterrent that think. So that's why you don't need to give it to the teacher talked to Jack in mama, thunder jersey one zero one point five hijack. Hey, how will you? I'm good. I'm vehemently Armenia, teachers, okay? Erzen retired law enforcement officer. I okay. What is don't give them a gun? Raga I got from. I mean, whether he's if he's a retired law enforcement officer when as going to become a teacher at age fifty. I mean. And if there's still maintaining their qualifications. I don't have a problem with them doing it. But they're not still qualifying as a retired officer. Then you still have the disconnect you still have that emotional attachment. Let's talk to Kate in rights town on New Jersey one point five Cape. I'm good. How are you? Not too bad. On this. Okay. Veteran and public schools. I think it's time that we changed the structure this, and we have a school for kids remotely because everything is being done on the computers now, and I mean, there are already school set up your kids kick out one line and get the registration that way to university. More. School university of Phoenix or home school. Here's the thing. You know, you have as much as we hear about school shootings. It's also that they're very rare. You know, how many kids go to school every day socialization is part of going to school getting along with others working in playing well as part of going to school despite the video games, you know, despite the time they spend looking into their phone, but and you don't want to take that away. And I mean, I could see like the idea of home schooling. If you wanted to be that protective, and a lot of cases, home schooled kids, really, you know, pretty smart. So I you want to go that. Good. School kids, they connect with each other with other families and everything and they get together and like they shorted out like. Maybe someone will drive them. So who does math? And you know, so that works out pretty good. But I think getting any better. Again. I know it's we live in a society where the bar, you know, of tolerance has been moved to where this is an acceptable. But being done once upon a time, this would never when we were kids. This would never ever ever have even thought of and now it's happening with the frequency, you know, so that bar has been moved now that it's good that we tolerate it. But we're at that point now, but we don't like, you know, we don't shut it all down over the sake of you know, of a small number of school shootings. You know, we find a way to solve this problem. And I like when Nick was talking about maybe we reduced the number kids in classroom. Maybe we get to know the students better this such a disconnect with studio students and teachers today because of the size of the classrooms. You know that they're working in some places Kate thanks for the call to New Jersey. What oh one point five one eight hundred two eight three one zero one point five Steve trevelise nine.

"The candlelit dinner and everything is gonna sweeper offer feet. I think it shouldn't take a blood test. I think it should have been the wife knows. That's not her husband. And in fact, one of the big reasons Warner would not make this film is they told the writers you're not going to allow Castro to rape Archer's wife that will not ever be in a film, we make and they said, no, no it's important because this is what the film is all about. It's the fight over the woman. And so they stuck to their guns that the rape had to occur. If this was a real drama. Maybe like we never see them have sex. It's just implied of eve later on tells cage with Travolta and of them that oh, you know, what we been husband and wife for a week. And they have this really weird moment of like, oh now we gotta deal with how she's been raped for a week. And I'm like not the right movie for that the word I would use for it is overblown. They are just. Taking everything and going the spinal tap root of eleven isn't even enough with woo and cage. We're gonna make it thirteen and we're just going to make everything so overblown, and so crazy and not in a good way. Either. The craziness is definitely a manic form of insanity that's going on here. But again, it's one that you can take the ride with when you see a big cage doing the prison breakout. And nobody knows it's a trick on the viewer that this is a frigging ocean bound prison, you'd think Archer would know Archer should know where the prisoners go. A he gets to the top is stymied. By the fact that there's nothing but water in all directions, and he still jumps off. You just have to go with the fact that this is going to be extreme in every way. It really does seem like Whoo. Wishes. He was my little bay making the rock. Yeah. I think he wishes he was Michael bay doing a good Michael bay movie. I don't know the rock is that I'd have to go and revisit it. But this isn't a, wink, wink, nudge, nudge. Look how crazy we're gonna do this. He just fought his way out of an underwater oil rig prison and others Alec with machine gun shooting out. And he's got a job. I don't feel like they're ramping up on purpose to see how absurd I do think. Whoo. It's tricky giving intentions to the filmmakers, but I do think wou- thinks that. Yes. This is exciting adrenaline pumping action. I don't think it is my question. I wonder is I know that he wasn't particularly fluent in English. And there were translators. Did he not understand what some of this stuff was going on? And it's quite possible. He didn't have control over some of this tone because he didn't know what was really being said and being done. Well, take this for what you will. But he demanded rewrites, and they would send him rewrite, and he would send them back with no nose and just be like not good enough. Do more. I mean, okay. Maybe it's not good enough. But if you're going to break out of prison, I've seen a lot of movies where they do that. It's got to be cool. Not I've got a cigarette. And I'm going to burn the guy's hand as he's chiming down to the electroshock therapy chair while the guy who I had a sex sandwich with his wife and sister. I'm just going to convince to like, go crazy. You're Jim Belushi tear up the prison. I mean, this is the only word I had for it is comedy. This is not serious. No. You know, what it is is having invoked bay? It's Bazy it's not necessarily comedy. But it certainly just kind of rolling with things in those moments in those moments that is a rollout moments because yes, I agree with you that scene is ridiculously stupid that this guy just got electroshock therapy is drooling down his shirt, probably pissed himself from the shocks and is going to then get up like Frankenstein and beat down a couple of guards..
