"She's going to see her number one son in Czech Republic today. She didn't see him 7 months. If it was me, she would not even be packed yet. She was, we're ready to go to the airport like four hours ahead of time. She's going to see Jimmy. Yeah. If it was me over there, she would probably be sending me a letter. You know, maybe I don't know how much did she do that, but hey, you know, I had an unbelievable run I've never thought it would happen. It's just like you, you never thought you'd be doing this great thing for so long. You thought you'd be pumping gas or something. I know that. But anyway, well, hopefully I never fall prey to the only thing I'm doing is a celebrity bracket challenge on a radio show. So if I get that low I've been off your four jobs in the media since have you really in four weeks. So how tough can it be? How tough can it be? I've never worked in the media. I've never aspired. Well, you've worked on the media. Well, I actually like the media, just there might be a couple, but other than that, I enjoy the media. I always have and it can't be that hard. No, it's not. Trying to hire me. Well, they're hiring you for eye candy, I think. That's true. Look, look, it's the face. Oh, I know. Oh, don't I know. Oh, hey, safe travels there. And we'll probably be radio. Yes. Yes. Yeah. I made a career out of it. Coach, safe travels. Thank you. And that's Jim baham. And that would be his wife in the background, giggling. She's a great audience. I could hear zippers and I go, I hope some of these packing in there. I don't know what's going on. Play in the day is up next and then we will turn you loose with your phone calls after this.

"You say, some owners might be like, if bidwell didn't have to put 80% of what Kyler Murray gets on this contract and escrow, do you think he'd prefer it? Probably sell. Or two of the teams that are going to have to pay quarterback soon. Yeah, you think Mike Brown and Brown and dean spanos probably don't want to put 200 million aside. All at once. Probably. They might find some common ground and some other teams will be more apt to sign someone like Lamar to an offer sheet, one would think. I would do that. But I'm just me, just a guy sitting here and button up sweater. Sun's out. Ah. Thanks, Mike. I just came out of nowhere. I just saw the sun. I'm making a point. Am I making a point? Am I in the middle of making a point? All of a sudden he's like squirrel. Well, you know, he is our weather guy, so. I got to keep it. Okay. I'm sorry. I've made my 5 finished at any good job. Thanks. Am I wrong? I liked it. No, no, no. This is definitely something that probably should happen. I never knew that. That's crazy. Yeah, it's a cash flow. That's what everybody keeps saying. This is about cash, cash on hand, you know? You're going to take all this cash and put it, put it aside. Man, I don't know how Lamar is going to finish this. I don't know how this is going to finish up. All I know is that the ravens have the opportunity to match and they have the opportunity to pay them $32 million. And have him go out and play, you know, and if he's saying that weeks 13 through 18 had nothing to do with making sure that he wasn't putting life in limb online for team that wasn't willing to pay him what he thought he was willing to be paid. If it's not about that, then great. But I don't think he's going to sit out. That would be something else. And Nate the great is getting lit up on Twitter. Nathan grates having a tough goal. I hate me. Wow. How did you get a strong word? Well, look what he did. So the hate that you have for the Nate character is it akin to his dislike for Jim baham? Where you loved somebody and then you thought you'd love them and then that person overstayed their overstayed their stairs. Well, I think he has and then he'll turn. He has a closer relationship with beheim than I just feel like Nate did Ted dirty. I don't think he's I don't think he's got a close relationship with him. A day or something. Yeah. And how did he treat you talking about salmon? Well, back in 2000, I love Jim. Do you think he would remember the guy who talked about salmon? A chance. I don't know, I could remember on one hand, if anybody came up to me and talked about salmon with me. I don't talk salmon too often. I don't like it. I think it's too fishy of a fish. The hot take. How's it a hot take? That's a hot take. Why? Sushi, everyone needs to do. Salmon? Sushi. Oh, no. Next year. Everyone's like, you should have salmon. I'm like, tastes like fish. I don't even know if you get some properly prepared Sam. I was like you, man, Sam is good. Well, the Roku channel is loving this salmon talk going out

I was a player assistant coach read assistant assistant girls head coach. It's been a great time, I just feel so fortunate to have been able to do what I've done at one place for so long. But why was it awkward there? We hadn't worked some things out that had to be worked out. You know, it was simple. It wasn't actually, it took 30 minutes to work it out. And it's unfortunate that we didn't get it worked out ahead of time. Yeah. But that's a minor thing. If I wasn't, I'd tell you, you know that. I would tell you, I a 100% ready. It just wasn't. We just did. And it wasn't just the university's fault. It was really both both parties. And it's all worked out. We're all happy. We've got a great coach. I wanted to coach this year. We had 6 young players. 5 freshmen transfers off one another sophomore. And I thought we got through the year okay, not great, but okay. And I think we're in a pretty good position because we have every guy could come back, of course, in college, basketball, that's not something that usually happens. "Up. Jim Bailey, what kind of mood do you think Jim baham is going to be in? Does he give me, does he give me one of those today? I think it might get a little prickly. Yes. Yes. I think so. Yes. He's got to be prepared to wrestle with you a little bit. He knows there's some questions coming that are less than comfortable to answer. Well, he can now talk now it's over. He can talk. Say whatever he needs to say. He's officially a free agent at this point? I don't think he's going to come to another job. Yeah, I don't think he's like Mike bray at Notre-Dame as said, hey, I'm not retiring. It feels like Notre-Dame is going to bring in a new coach, but it feels like Mike bray still wants to coach. Is there a long time? Yes. A sneaky long time. Yes, he, yes? Was he there longer than digger Phelps was there at Notre-Dame? Does it feels like Mike was there a long, long time? I got Mike bray, jeez. Seems right. I think he got there in 2000. That's like 22 seasons. Yeah. Wow. How long was digger Phelps at Notre dame? I think 9 but I got checked. I have him at Notre-Dame digger was 71 to 91. Oh, how long? Okay. So about 20 years for him and a little over 20 years for Mike bray. Yeah. Philip in Florida joins us. Hi, Phil. What's on your mind today? Hey, good morning, Dan. Good morning. First off, I just wanted to say that I'm a proud member of the invalid club. I found your show in 2020 and I was laid up in the hospital and started listening then. So I always appreciate the joy that you and the guys bring every day. And lastly, I hope you and the dense have a great week, free of awkward celebrity encounters. Thank you. Thanks, Phil. Getting the moonshine tailgate moonshine. And once again, the invalid fan club is a very powerful fan club here on the program. How many times would we hear that? You know, I was laid up with knee surgery and I found your show. Broke my arm and I couldn't change the channel and I found your show. The official show hip replacement. You're really down for the count with that one. But I'm okay with that. Yeah. Yeah. It's a little more rough, Gritty. Yeah. Like NBA refs are fixing games. Now we're cooking. Ripped from the headlines. Oh. Should I have told him when he called in that I had not really, I haven't seen a full episode of Law & Order? He wouldn't believe you. It's almost impossible to not have seen an episode of Law & Order. He would have been like, see, now you're getting nasty. No, then he would say you're lashing out at me. Yes. And that would, I would understand that. All right, we'll take a break. Get Jim beheim set to join us. I got something that J Bill has talked about this yesterday. He hinted about this yesterday. And I got some more details about this of maybe the future of March Madness. And it could change the sport forever. Jay talked about this a little bit because he was saying, why isn't Clemson in there? Or Rutgers and they did think about expanding the tournament to 90 or 90 16s. That was that was brought up. They have a committee called the transformation committee. And they recently talked about expanding March Madness to as many as 90 16s. This way, if you play in a really good conference, that you don't get left out because March Madness, the tournament once Cinderella stories. We can watch basketball every night of the week. You can watch these games. But when you get a Cinderella story, certainly the first two weeks of the tournament, that's when people are talking about the tournament. If you get a blue blood winning and moving on, that doesn't move the needle. Now, when you get to the final four, you want to see the great teams play against one another. And maybe have an outlier. But I have some details here from a source that I'm going to bring up to you a little bit more in detail after Jim bahan. Just so you can get a sense of what could happen with March Madness. And it's not far fetched, but it is a reality that I think down the road that we'll be talking about this. And as my source said, it could change college athletics again forever. I'll have that for you coming up a little bit. Take a break. Jim bay Hun joins us next here in the Dan Patrick show. Oh, by the way, giving away a traeger grill with our celebrity bracket challenge. The Rich Eisen Show

"First year, we had the first four want to say it was 2012, maybe 2014, the very first year from the first four BCU was in it. They went all the way to the final four. And then UCLA did add in 21. So in what 9 years we've had two teams go from the first floor to the final four. So you're talking about the last teams in the field. Florida Gulf Coast was the first to reach a suite 16. Saint Peter's last year was the first 15 seats to reach an elite 8. So Wichita state, butler. So it's been happening for quite some time. One thing that is happening, though, because you mentioned NIL between the NIL and the transfer portal where kids can now switch schools and not have to sit out. And the other thing rich is the COVID years. Everybody got an extra eligibility. So we've got like 60 or seniors on some of these teams. So college basketball is definitely older than it's ever been until this COVID thing cycles out. And I think that's kind of what I look for not only experience, but also continuity, who's retaining players over a couple of years and oftentimes it is the mid ages who are able to do that a little bit more easily. Seth Davis here from CBS sports Turner, the athletic on the rich eisen show, is the brackets have now come out and the first four starts on Tuesday and then do we call it the first round on Thursday? Did we finally give up the ghost of calling that the second round? That's not gone, right? Can you believe someone had that idea? Yeah, that was like, you know what? They didn't like they didn't like the play in games. First used to be only one of these games. That was the playing game. Let's call it an opening round game. Okay, but now it's the first round game and then the big first round is the second round. So sometimes sometimes it takes them a little while to get to the second they got there. We're finally, they were finally there. So just a couple more questions on the sport writ large. Did Jim beheim get fired? Seth? Kind of. Yeah, you know, I think he was moving to a place where he was going to retire. And then because he's Jim baham God bless him, he's a reporter's dream because he always said something he shouldn't say. He just couldn't help himself in that press conference. Well, it's up to the school and then okay. So sometimes if you force them to show their hand, they show you their hand. And in this case, he got the back of the hand. So I think he saw the writing on the wall of well, if I want to come back next year, I think I can, but maybe there's some folks who don't want you to because we haven't done well the last couple of years and I'm 77 he is. So I think they would have gotten there in a better way, but he just wouldn't play nice in the sandbox and they were working things out. Some of it the Chancellor was out of town. I talked to Jimmy for a while about all this, but yeah, I think at the end of the day, they expedited the day new model. I think is maybe a more positive way to say it, but if you want to say he got fired, it's not entirely incorrect. Well, I guess the only reason why I bring it up is because of that final press conference in how odd there's no other way to put it odd, awkward, which is not what you want to have from somebody who's been part of the program since 1969. So does he have a role in Syracuse basketball if he wants it or is this just a let's just have a cooling off period because of the way everything ended? What do you think? I think yeah, I think he'll have a role. I mean, like I said, I think it was messy. I think they would have ended up there anyway. They were starting to have conversations, okay. How is this going to look? One of the issues was he's got another year left on his contract. And he wants that money, you know? And I said to him, well, he got enough money, right? He's like, ask the principal. All right, Jim, mister principal. So God bless them, you know, figuring that out. He's going to do some ambassador work for the school. He could certainly help to raise a lot of money. He's still got to do a radio show, so he's got some radio obligations there. And I think he'll do a great job for the school. I mean, he's certainly a huge asset in terms of raising money. It just shouldn't have gone down like that. I mean, he should have, he should have known the question was coming. Like, okay, after you lose your last game, they're going to ask you if you're retiring. What's the answer? And the answer should be, you know what? We just lost a season's over. I'm 77. I'm going to take some time. I want to think about it. And I just, I'm not there. I'd like to, whatever to say. And then it goes away. But he didn't do that. He didn't do that. And so he forced their hand and they showed their hand. And it was not pretty, but like I said, I think they ended up in the right place, and I think that he'll be around and he'll be helping out and he's still meant a lot to that program in that city and time. I think people will forget the way that it ended and celebrate what happened up to that point.

So Kirk Franklin. Okay. We played the wine ins. Yes. Okay. This one side of the family, they gonna play this. And the other side, Marvin, we're gonna play his eyes on the sparrow. We don't play that. You can see the terms and check it out for yourself, discover dot com slash match. We'll get to phone calls coming up. You get the feeling that they're almost ready to print the Aaron Rodgers jerseys. It just feels like in the last two days, and this is with jets fans. Like, it's happening. It's just when is it happening? Locally. Because we've gotten to that point, Diana rossini who joined us yesterday from the mothership said, you know, there's optimism that they're on the brink of signing Aaron Rodgers. Now it's just a question of what is this going to happen? If it doesn't happen by this weekend or Monday, then doubt is going to start to set in. Like, wait a minute, what's going on here? Should we go after Lamar Jackson? Can we have Mike white again this year? What about Jimmy Garoppolo? You're going to have panics going to start to set in. Because now you're like, hey, we can go toe to toe. We can beat the dolphins. We can compete with the bills. We're better than the Patriots. This infusion of optimism is unbelievable. But it can be crushing if Aaron Rodgers decides on second thought, I don't want to play anymore, or I want to go to Vegas, or I'm going to stay in Green Bay. Now, all the reports at a Green Bay are the optimism is, it feels like we can move on now. Fresh start Jordan love, young team, let's go. Now, you might be irrelevant this upcoming season because with Rogers irrelevant, always. In the atmosphere makes you relevant at green bag. At Lambeau. But it feels like from the front office and the reports out there. It's like we're done. We're done with this. We don't want any more of this. I mean, that's why they gave him permission. You're not going to give him permission unless you want him. To find somebody else. They don't want him to stay in Green Bay. I have the cover of the New York Post, which really is the pulse of New York City. Of course it is. Yesterday's sports cover on the top half was big picture of Aaron Rodgers gangrene can't lose Aaron now, and then they'll other pictures Jim buy him. Jim baham leaving, Syracuse, of course, a hell of a fun with that. But guess which athlete was on the cover. The front cover. Of the New York Post, the past two days. The front cover. Not a New York athlete, per se. Past two days, I was pretty surprised boy, but remember, they like salaciousness more than sports. Okay. What is solution? So son Brett Favre. Nope. Okay. Salacious. John morant. More salacious. More postage. Yes, Todd. That sounds like a Tiger Woods situation. Correct. Tiger by the tail Woods locks girlfriend at a mansion. She sues to tell story wants 30 million. Today's cover. This is this morning. I was also caged by Tiger, old girlfriend blah blah blah. Not literally. Yes. But this is a quote. And so Tiger on the cover of the New York Post two days in a row, not the sports company. Yeah, I guess she was with him for 6 years. And then the report was a couple of days ago, they told her to pack her bags for a short trip, took her to the airport, and then told her that the locks had been changed at his house. Yeah, Locke's security. And there wasn't any trip. She wasn't going on a trip. And then she, I guess, agreed to or signed an NDA when she first started dating him. And now her attorney wants to fight that. And she's suing for $30 million. She wants to she wants to tell what life was like with Tiger. I'm assuming that's why the NDA. Did she get any parting gifts? Did she get like a major? Did she get like you got to give her something she was there with you when you nearly died in the car accident? You were like a major used set of clubs. You can make some money off that. Yeah, but give her like, you won the Arnold Palmer or something. Give her a trophy. Yes, it's got a stink to go from not living that life. To live in that life for like 6 years. And then it's like, all right, well, got to go back to your old life. Now, no more private jets. You know, 50,000 ft² houses. Yeah, sorry. Yeah, Pauly. There's a lawsuit that alleges Woods violated the Florida residential landlord tenant act by breaking the oral tenancy agreement that this woman says she could still live there. She's also suing for her $30 million on top of that. There is no common law marriage down there. I don't know if there are 6 years is enough, but they don't have that down. I think it's ten years old. But she's so why is she asking for $30 million? And how do you kind of settle on $30 million? The filing states the actual damage damages are likely to be measured in excess of $30 million. Woods, it's unclear. It's a bunch of legal stuff. Yeah, but I'm just wondering if like I'm suing and I want $30 million because why? Yeah, yeah. You're a standard of living that you've been accustomed to. And that's why you're suing. Heinous suffering? Okay, but embarrassment of being locked out while the neighbors are like, look, but shouldn't you be able to break up with somebody? Can't she join a live tour, they're throwing out money. They should bring her stories and all that stuff. You did get a copy of the taco with board game. So it's something. It's not like she was completely empty handed. No. No? No. Those game shows, they always say you get a copy of the board game. What about Pauly had a pretty good one? You did. Yeah. I mean, there's solid double. Thanks. And then you have a dribbler to the mound. So his is now like a triple advance the runner though. So that's all I'm here to do. Hey, that's what new baseball rules. A lot more movement there. Over to third. There's less than two outs. We'll get the rundown. Yeah, Paul. The defendant in the case the girlfriend was told to pack a suitcase for a short vacation before it was revealed to her that she'd been locked out of the premises upon arrival at the airport. You don't wait till you gotta think better than that. You actually put them on the plane, put someone in plane, then say, I gotta run back and grab something. And then, yeah, but then what happens when she's on the plane and you have to go back and now she's still on the plane. That's not his business anymore. Well, it's his plane. He's dealing with. He's dealing with the locksmith. Would you not flying continental or JetBlue or something? She's a middle C we're going on spirit, hon. What? What happened to air force Tiger? Yes. Would

"Do that. And they were like, I don't remember exactly, but it was like, yeah, just call him. We'll just call him where. How? And they were like, yeah, well, just in his office, he handles his own media. So just call he'll answer. He'll recognize his voice and then just he'll talk to you. I was like, so I'm just supposed to, he doesn't know who I am. He doesn't know, yeah, just call him. It'll be fine. I was like, okay. So is Jim Baháʼí, and just to randomly, it was just unusual experience the way that stuff typically works. And I remember him being accommodating. You know, and he was terrific. And then of course, Memphis beat Syracuse in the garden, and then Sarah used won the national championship that year. And that is the year that Jim baham was able to hold a trophy at the end of the whole thing. So he's gone, red Autry is now the head coach. And we'll move on after this. I've had multiple people ask me, do you think he's the right guy for the job? I think he's the right hire. I have no idea. If he'll do the job well, and I say that not specifically about red. It's just that with assisting coaches, first time head coaches, you never know. You never know. Sometimes never know. Your Arizona and you hire a first time head coach and Tommy Lloyd and it works beautifully. Your butler, you hire a first time head coach in Brad Stevens and it works beautifully. Other times you're Louisville. You hire a first time head coach in Kenny Payne. Doesn't go so well. You just do not know. So I do believe he's the right person to be hired in this moment under these circumstances. Whether or not it'll work, we'll see. Real quick. Georgetown Syracuse is having coaching changes in the same cycle kind of interesting. Texas and Texas tech, since we last talked, Mark Adams resigned, we'll see where that goes, but Paul mills and grant mccaskill and Paul mills in oral Roberts are going to the tournament grant mccaslin could be going to the tournament. They've got a big game later today. Those are a couple of names to keep an eye on. But that's a job that opened a job that opened just after two years. So that was notable Cal fired Mark Fox, which was inevitable. Stanford is retaining Jared Haas. This is the second straight year where there was the expectation that Haas would be fired. He has not. So he will get you 8. They have not yet made the NCAA what's the explanation there? Listen, I don't have a root for people to get fired. Everybody's got families and mortgages. So I'm never like I'm enraged that they kept this guy. I don't get like, yeah, whatever. I don't care about Stanford basketball. It's not my Alma mater. Wish it was my Alma mater. I wish it was my Alma mater. But it's not. I once wanted to go to school there. But so I have no emotion in it. But what? I am shocked that they're keeping him after yet another. And I say this as kindly as I can say. After another disappointing season. I talked to someone about a week and a half ago, they thought it was 99% that they were going to move on, talk to someone else about 9 o'clock on Thursday night and they're like, he might be safe. I'm like, he's safe. He might be safe and lo and behold, they lose to Arizona, another sub 500 season. Yeah, by all means, I mean, if you can keep doing it, Jared Haas, and we'll see how many players going to the portal. I don't know, but Mark Madsen is an alum who has done a great job at school. Nobody knows about at Utah valley. And you have the window right there. Take the easy win. Why is this the case? Honestly, Bernard Muir is among the nicest 80s I've ever talked to in my life. And I feel like his mental disposition is part of this. I don't know, Stanford's also not the job now that it was two decades ago. But why? Why isn't it? And IL situation is not great and the transfer portal and getting guys in. It's just not as in theoretically. Now Haas has actually been able to recruit NBA picks. Yes. Like three of them in the past 5, 6 years. So you've actually gotten talent there, but I don't know. Sometimes I think, and I don't mean you, but I think sometimes people look at a program that's struggling and they say, well, it's not what it used to be. Well, does that mean it couldn't be? Because they gave you hired the right guy, could it be? Stanford was a consistently awesome men's basketball program for a long period of time under Mike Montgomery. The idea that they would go this long without making an NCAA tournament when he basically made it every single year. Yes, I know different era, all that stuff. I got you. But man, you're not going to convince me that somebody can't win at Syracuse. You take all those things you think are disadvantages and you turn them into advantages. I hear you at Stanford was bad forever before Montgomery as well, so there's that to consider, I do want to get to games. I do want to, I see people in the comments, like, it's hard to get players there. They got players. They've got players. The thing with Jared Hess is not that well, he hasn't been able to get players. They've had projected first round picks in this program under Jared. And it just has really never never clicked. Yeah. Last thing on the carousel front before we talk some hoop, 'cause I don't like my hours and days are blending together. I don't think we have podcasted on this podcast. I think we talked about it on the show. And to anyone that watched both our CVS Sports Network shows, we appreciate it. And GP and I and the studio yesterday together. That was a lot of fun. I don't think we talked about it on this podcast though. The beard candidacy at old miss, we will see he is a leading candidate, but I'll reiterate what I said on our CBS Sports Network show. And what I've said like two times, I guess on headquarters, I've just been told that he's a viable leading candidate, but there are significant hurdles that frankly, at this point, might have been cleared, but from a legal standpoint, like they old miss is going to do every single thing as it should. I mean, if you're going to make this higher, if it happens, and it could happen, it could happen today or it might not happen period. Like I was told they could reach a point where they keep getting the football down the field, but then they hit the 5 yard line and then something or something says some realizes something they're drafting the contract and someone in a position of power says, you know what? Here's why and we're not going to do it. I'm told they're still looking at the other guys. But beard is in the mix at old miss and he is considered at last check the leading candidate, and if that's going to get done, my understanding is going to be the guy, I

"The green wave. Well, that was obviously wouldn't happen these days. Because those programs are two entirely different levels. But that's what Jim baham inherited. And where he took it was to a place where it was widely recognized as one of the biggest brands in college athletics. And so that will be his legacy. It won't be being eliminated by wake forest in the ACC tournament and then holding a weird press conference. It'll be that he took over a program and turned it into an absolute monster and kept it there for a long period of time. Did he stay maybe a year? Or multiple years too long? Probably. But that's not for me to say. Ultimately, at the age of 78, he in conjunction with the school decided it was time for somebody else to coach Syracuse's program, red Audrey will be that guy hopefully jump behind will enjoy his retirement. The way we've seen Roy Williams, even Mike krzyzewski in recent times, you know, as somebody who can walk around that campus, go to those games and be appreciated for all the things that he did. Interesting trivia time I tweeted this the other night, not really a tour of the time. But it could be like a fun one someday. The last person Jim beheim ever beat and the last person who ever beat Jim behaim. It's the same person. It's Steve Forbes. It is Steve Forbes. How about that? Put that in your notes. I had it in my notes. I apologize if the first thought it was turned off. The air conditioner turned on. I don't know if you can hear it or not, but I just tried to turn it off and it refuses to comply. I got the Jim beheim of wall mounts over here right now. So as a listener, we can't hear your air conditioner. We could not hear the sirens. We can barely hear you. Okay. That's good. Jim behaim's time at Syracuse was so long ago. Number one album in the country. Ray Charles legendary legendary record, modern sounds and country western music. The Beatles had not even appeared on Ed Sullivan. I started at Syracuse there. So that's also part of this. He has the longest association with a school of any person in the history of college athletics. Jim phelan coached two years longer at mount saint Mary's, but he did not go to mount saint marriage. Went to Syracuse, was a walk on, played at Syracuse, had a few years where he was playing low level pro ball and then returned basically still had his home there. And then was there from the late 60s, early 70s on. And so yeah, this is, this is a historic ending. It really is. And it's the fact that it's 2023 and it's finally here. It's wild. On a personal note, back in O 6 or so, I think it was. I got to go to my first biggie's tournament as not even as a functioning media member, but I was able to obtain a credential. And so I was like, what the hell I'll just do this. And so the first question I ever asked any coach in any capacity at the D one level was beheim in the old and the old big east and I've got the, I've got the transcript somewhere in my pile of junk, but I wanted to save it and I don't even remember what the hell I asked to be honest, but he took it well and I was like, all right, one down, let's do it. So he moves along and now obviously in three successive years in the ACC alone, we've had the change in the garden. We've had Roy, K and now Behan, that's not even getting into the likes of Jay Wright, but a lot of the Hall of Famers, the men who have won national championships, the men who are near or at the top of the all time wins list, they've moved on. And now we see what Syracuse can be in the air to come. I do think it will be a challenge, but maybe Autry's got it to the point where he can get this thing where they can be a top 25 level kind of program to out of every three years, you know, his goal will be to do it every year, but we have to see. This is as challenging of a changing of the guard because Syracuse is not duke. It's not even huber taking over at North Carolina. It's not, it's not Kyle Neptune and Villanova just lost on Thursday night. It's not even Neptune taking over Villanova, which is in Philadelphia, which is one of the best basketball cities in the country. Syracuse, New York. The middle of the state, winter's last half the year, and beheim was able to so much of behe's legacy is how he was able to recruit these incredible players from across the country to be willing to go and play in Syracuse, New York. How did you do that? I wonder. I wonder. It will not be easy, but I'm interested to see what Syracuse can be because I don't know what it will be, honestly. If you told me ten years from now, Syracuse was able to maintain a top four status in the ACC. It wouldn't stun me, but if you told me, yeah, Syracuse's average finish in the ACC in the ten years since Jim beheim retired is tenth. That would not shock me either. We'll see where it goes from here, but a major era is over, and that program needed a reboot and it's going to be better for having not gone at least one more year with behemoth in charge. Yeah, my first year as a full-time beat rider was the 2002 2003 season. Covering Memphis for the commercial pill newspaper and Memphis happened to open that season inside Madison Square Garden against Syracuse. And so I remember in the week before, I had set up an interview with Carmelo Anthony this fabulous freshman Carmelo Anthony and I talked to him which is no, by the way, as a small that's not like Carmelo Anthony's hype was massive. So the fact that you pulled that off, you know, different era, but that's well, this was the point is that so I'm working through the SID. Again, I'm like a first time relatively young beat rider. And I'm like, I guess you'd call the SID at Syracuse and see if maybe you can get Jim behaim on the phone.

"Dead, like we did a show on CBS Sports Network. I hope everybody watched it. Shortly after Syracuse was eliminated from the ACC tournament. And we both said that in that postgame press conference, Jim sounded like a man who knew he had just coached his final game and then literally I checked 6 minutes after we went off the air. It became official that Jim behaim is no longer Syracuse's coach. What did you make of the way all of that went down? It was bizarre. Well, okay, more than anything it was apropos. All right, because between it becoming publicly official and Syracuse's season ending, we had the only way that beheim could possibly go out. And that's by getting cantankerous with the media and going back and forth and having another classic Jim beheim, ted-talks, and this time it came with Donna de toda, the great beat writer out in Syracuse and Syracuse bungled this whole thing. In fact, I have not read the story it has been busy as hell, but I did see that Pete family ESPN did get chef guy on the phone and she chefs because apparently he said something like they gotta make this right. Like this has to be, they can't do it like this. Syracuse announced it was moving on from Jim beheim, did not use retirement or retire in the story. Hiring red Autry, which was the expectation behind the scenes for weeks, if not months at this point. And Jim beheim didn't have a quote in the damn thing. The man has been associated with this university since 1962. 1962. Very strange, very bizarre. I was told beheim really for the first time expressed to the entire team at the same time in his presence that this was going to be it. He said that after the loss to wait for us. And so they like Syracuse had their quotes prepped and they had their story prepped behind the scenes, but there was just a botch with all of this. And it is like a bummer. I mean, I guess it couldn't go any other way with Jim beheim, I guess. He clearly, he got just, you know, he's getting ready to say goodbye. He's saying his goodbyes. Someone's just handing them a jacket, and they're just kind of, they're just nudging them. We'll see you next week. It's nudging him right out the door. And it was, I don't know. It was weird to be honest. There is a press conference on Friday here at Syracuse to formally introduce Adrian Australia to the media. I don't know if beheim will have. Let me stop you right there. Mike waters covered Syracuse forever, terrific reporter, writer. Is that this press conference? Jim beheim is there. Okay. And Jim behaim is speaking and again, I'm just following what Mike watters is tweeting, said that he felt while the late season losses were piling up, that it was time to retire. And says that he talked to his athletic director about it last Friday, but never really had enough time to talk to his Chancellor, which is why the press coverage on Wednesday. Jim says, seems so awkward, but he is now indicating he's known for about a week. This is what he was going to do. Which I'll take him at his word. It just still makes it interesting, hilarious, that when it came time to like handle that, he just couldn't do it. He just couldn't say the words. There have been coaches who have in press conferences at conference tournaments say this is it for me. And Jim just could not bring himself to do it. As I wrote on Thursday morning, people don't usually we get in the moment so like locked in on how it ended and what it felt like and what it looked like and the truth is when you get some time between now and a different place in the future. We tend to focus less on how it ended and what happened. And just look at the totality of the career. And so this is something that was awkward on Wednesday and has created shrug of the shoulders over the past 48 hours, but after today, Jim baham is going to walk around Syracuse for as long as he lives as an undeniable legend icon. And one of the most accomplished people in the history of this sport. And so I would say the same thing about Tom Brady or Joe Montana or any baseball all time great. You don't remember the very end as much as you Michael Jordan. When you think about Michael Jordan, you don't think about the Washington Wizards. You think about 23 and you think about the bulls and when you think about Jim beheim going forward, you won't think about losing to wake forest at the buzzer, an awkward press conference that time he accused Pitt and wake forest of buying teams. You'll just think about that guy was at Syracuse for longer than I've been alive. And look at me. I've been alive a pretty decent amount of time at this point. And really took that program to a level that must have seemed on imaginable at the time that he took the job. Because the guy, Jim beheim replaced, left Syracuse to be the head coach at tulane. Think about that. That's where Syracuse basketball was when Jim beheim took the job. He was replacing a guy who was like, you know what?

"Comes to Tennessee. Let me ask you about Rick Barnes. I am a huge rig Barnes fan. We had a fantastic conversation with him yesterday. But he has there are some naysayers out there among the vox populi in terms of March. And he's got a final four on his resume. He's got a lot of, but you know what? And I think probably too much of it comes from a couple of years ago when there were one seed and lost in the sweet 16. Is that a fair wrap? That's like saying what Mark fuse not a great coach because he hasn't won a title. He has the winningest percentage of all time in college basketball history amongst active coaches right now. No, the NCAA tournament does not does not mean that you can coach or you can't coach. What you doing during the course of the regular season is going to be indicative of championships number of appearances consistency within your program. Those are all the measuring sticks of being a quality coach. What the NCA tournament can do is when you do win it, it does put you in another stratosphere. But I kind of equate it to Trent Dilfer winning the Super Bowl as a starting quarterback. He did. You know, do we sit there and go, okay, well, because he because he won a Super Bowl, he's now an elite level quarterback. And there's other quarterbacks you can point to, but that's the one that comes to mind with me right away. Just because you want a national championship as a coach, doesn't mean that you're a legendary all time great head coach. You know, we just saw Jim beheim retire yesterday or announce his retirement or maybe not announce his retirement in the school announced his retirement. Whichever way you want to roll with it, right? About 45 years old. I have not been alive for a single day in which Jim baham wasn't the coach of Syracuse basketball. And all those years of coaching. How many national championships does Jim beheim have? Okay, and he's one of the all time great coaches that we've ever had in the business. So it's unfair to hold Rick Barnes to the standard of, well, if you don't win a national championship, then you're not an elite level coach. Rick Barnes is an elite level coach. He can coach anywhere in any conference in the country and he's going to make you competitive. He's going to turn your program into a winner. He's going to give you conference championships and he's done all of those things already in Tennessee. And I'm glad we could get that because it brings me to the next question about John calipari. I heard somebody Kentucky fans and they said, do you realize it's been ten years since we won a national championship? Yeah, I think we all realize that. But it is part of the narrative of March, you're at the Vanguard of it, but it's still these conversations go on. It's been 23 years since the entire big ten won a championship. It's been 26 years since the PAC 12 has won a championship. So oh my gosh, it's been ten years. Now, the standard in the bar and the excellence is different, right? But I played at UCLA. UCLA hasn't won a title since 1995. They've been to final fours underneath Ben Howland. They went to a final four under Mick cronin. They lost in that game to Gonzaga, which Jalen suggs hit the buzzer beater from half court. But listen, I get Kentucky as much as anybody because of my time in this conference and the bar on the standard is so high, but that's the way it's supposed to be. And Cal wants it that high. If he doesn't want it that high, then that's the time that you say I can't do this anymore. Because the pressure is there to do that. By the way, this is a Kentucky team. If case and Wallace is healthy and playing at the level in which we've seen him play it. Right? That going into the NCAA tournament, they're going to be that team that's going to be on that 7 line or that 5 line that all of a sudden the four is going great. We get Kentucky in the second round. The two's going, we got to deal with Kentucky. If there are 6 and they play in a three, the three is going, I don't want no part of Kentucky. And they're going to have a chance in this NCAA tournament to make a run and make a march. But, you know, there's been other teams. I think you go back to that undefeated team with Devin Booker Karl Anthony towns, the Harrison twins, and Tyler ulis, that entire group, when they, when they took the loss in the final four, I think that was the one that stung more than anything. You mentioned UCLA and you may have, I don't think you were

"Absolutely. Name image and likeness, one and done G league, the NBA going to get to the point where they allow you to come out of high school and go right to the NBA. Coaches, coaches trying to figure this out. And I'm sure that Jim beheim, it's probably bittersweet that he's going, you know, I hate to quit coaching, but I don't want to coach in this environment anymore. know if that's how he feels, but after four decades, nearly 5 decades of coaching this way, and now you're not really in control or as much as you think you are. That's why you're going to see a lot of these coaches who bounce around. You know, John calipari's going through this at Kentucky right now. He's got a warm seat in Kentucky, and I never would have thought that we would be saying that about him. Now he's got a great recruiting class coming in. But that's what coach K coach Kyle does. He kind of keeps himself relevant because he'll bring in another recruiting class. But everybody's caught up to him or a lot of schools have caught up to him. And they're able to get these recruits. And, you know, it used to be that it was calipari and Kentucky were leading the charge on. We don't care if you're one and done. And then when Mike czapski goes, you know, maybe I'm going to get into the one and done. I go, okay, that's it. You've just taken away the advantage that Kentucky hen. But Jim beheim, I owe part of my career to Jim bahan. And also the coaches who were in the big east, Louis carnase, John Thompson, Raleigh, massimino, the early days, man. We were coming off those games leading right into SportsCenter, being able to cover the biggies tournament. The best. Best. I mean, I was able to see some great great basketball at the garden. Great basketball. It feels like there's like a generation of people that were sort of raised on the biggies tournament. Yes. You know? And me being one of them. And plus, you also look at this and you go, Jim baham bows out in what Greensboro, North Carolina, when Syracuse is playing wake forest. What is wrong with that picture? Hey, we want to be a football school as well as a basketball school. They could have just kept the big east and been a basketball powerhouse. And I know you get your money from football. I know, you know, Syracuse football program. But, you know, it's really about their basketball program. And, you know, you look around with St. John's or Villanova. I mean, it's about basketball at those schools. But everybody wants to expand. I mean, you're seeing this right now with the PAC 12. Big 12, everybody's looking for a seat. And what's going to happen? Now you're going to start poaching more schools and trying to Gonzaga may be to the big 12. Oregon going to go to the Big Ten. I mean, this is what's going on right now. Kind of wild. But Syracuse decided that they were going to be in the ACC and I was like, all right. And then I did have people arguing, well, they got great basketball there. They do. But it just felt like the big east, and everybody wants to kind of metastasize. Hey, we're really good here. Let's spread it out a little bit here. And Syracuse ends a game against wake forest. All righty. What's poll question today? We got a bunch of them here, Dan. We can start with Aaron Rodgers if you want. Let me save that. Okay. Because we have maybe some information coming up here with Aaron Rodgers in the jets. You want to go with Jim behaim? He's no longer the coach at Syracuse because he decided 47 years long enough. The headaches of NIL and transfer portals became too much. Or he was forced out. I think that's from Todd. Oh. I think the toddler. I would just, I would just say he was reminded that he wasn't going to be coming back. Encouraged to retire. It does seem like we're seeing a lot of, you know, just Hall of Fame coaches. Retire in the last year or two, three years. Yeah, but look at the ages of, you know, coach K was what 75 when he was retiring? Maybe? So you think like emergence of NIL and things like that is just coincidental? No, no, no, no. I think it does factor in. I think it makes it far tougher to be a head coach now. Yeah. Yes, absolutely. Because there's so much more involved in this. How much am I going to make? That's probably one of the first questions that they hear. Imagine you're a Hall of Fame coach and you got some 18 year old coming in there with his parents. Hey, how much am I going to make? And that's what they ask. Yep. It's not playing time. Oh, I'm getting planned time. It's how much am I going to make? I mean, imagine LeBron James son is going to do some university a favor by going there for one year. And he's only going to be there for one year. And he's probably going to make, you know, 7 to $10 million when he's there. And there'll be on national TV all the time. The players are the ones who are guiding this now, steering this now. And I'm sure that, you know, some of these older coaches are like, hey, I want to do it my way. That doesn't work anymore. You got to play the game. And that's the game. Transfer portal used to be, hey, am I going to play as a freshman? Now, we're not even talking about that. It's how much money am I going to make? All right, well, get your phone calls coming up, settle on a poll question. And Drew Brees will join us coming up in a little bit. Gilbert arena's former NBA all star get his thoughts on the situation with John morant, John morant, taking another couple of games off, not called a suspension, it's everything but a suspension, it feels like in name. But for more games, perhaps for John morant, Gilbert arenas is been down this road before, and he had an unbelievable career, and then at age 28, he brought a gun in the locker room and had it pointed towards one of his teammates. So we'll talk to him coming up. Drew Brees will get his thoughts on the size of Bryce young and also what do you think of Derek Carr going to his New Orleans Saints? Take a break, 15 after the hour, back after this. Dan Patrick show. If you own a business, a small business, you know the value of time. Get refunds dot com. They know too. A nice little injection in March would not be the worst thing. In there. There you go. Why not just leave a 5 star and then put your entire bracket? Chip, you will be back on more shows later this later this month. That will be happening. As I said on an earlier preview episode, this is just, I feel like for the listener and listen, if you feel this way, shout out to CBS at Gmail dot com. Or leave a review. We want to just give you a slight break with just me and Paris on every. We didn't want to pummel you with 6 preview episodes and it's just me and Pearson frankly, if we did that, the episodes wouldn't be 18, 20, 22 minutes, they'd be longer that. We got to get in and get out relatively quickly. So this is the ACC preview episode. And we got to get this thing into the feed pretty quick here because this year's ACC tournament will be held. Chef, where is it? Greensboro, North Carolina. That's right. Unfortunately, it's not where it deserves to be. You and I both agree Barclay center. Taking a year off. It's going to run. It's going to run Tuesday through Saturday. You know, I could even, I'm not going to. I could just step away for the next 12 to 15 minutes. I feel like you and not a can just get this done. You don't even need me for this episode, but not I'm going to be throwing to you before we get out of here as well because I want a couple of thoughts from you. I also don't have the not a welcome drop in the board yet. That's coming. I got to get the welcome drop from a couple episodes ago. Classic pod moment. If you missed it, the title game in the ACC tournament will air 8 30 eastern on ESPN on Saturday. Let's get to our storylines, chip Patterson. As we prepare for this, frankly, 15 teams, what are we doing here? Can we just go top 12 in this league? It's a waste of time. But regardless, 15 team bracket, what's your storyline to know, heading into the tournament? Yeah, I mean, as much as you want to say, it feels like 83, 40 years since NC state's national championship as much as you want to look at Mike bray. Can we get some sort of dream run as he continues to have the seniors in the fighting Irish playing a little bit better? Dukes playing good basketball. Come on, man. If you were talking about storyline, a story that generates conversation, we are in Greensboro, North Carolina, where so many ACC tournament games and multiple ACC tournament championships have gone to the North Carolina tar heels, and after losing to duke over the weekend, North Carolina now enters, as y'all broke down on the pod, needing multiple wins against the right opponent in order to be able to potentially make the NCAA tournament. And so does the team even have the ability given the inconsistencies that we've seen and how much that team struggles offensively to win multiple games against the kind of opponents. Will they get the bracket luck that they need in order to get that line of opponents? And is there any possibility that they are one and done? And that it's like, this just goes out like a fart in the wind with the Louisville BC winner, stepping in there and sending them home in Greensboro. Like the range of outcomes is tremendous, given what we've seen from the tar heels this year. And so given the setting, given the fact that the history they would make in terms of not making the NCAA tournament, I promise you, I'm not just like dipping into my comfortable bag of what I know, to me, this is the biggest storyline in the ACC tournament. A couple of things here. First of all, I just had set Davis text me what exactly defines us versus them. Come on. If you're in every show listener, I don't need to explain that he's doing this in real time. So you listen to Sunday show and the kind of saw state stuff. It happened as you were going through that. So that's hilarious. Number two, I think you are right. And to anyone listening along to this episode, either nod your head or shake it, the fact that North Carolina continues to be the dominant storyline, many of you probably just don't want that to be the case. It just still is. It just is because the other ones dukeshire, he's done well. Like, there's something there, but it's not percolating. It's just can duke actually continue to play hot and we'll get to the blue Devils in just a minute here. I actually think another one, this will be a storyline because someone surely must ask him, Jim beheim noted Greensboro, North Carolina food connoisseur if memory serves correctly. It was the Denny's that he was referencing as the best for dinner in Greensboro. Not true. But if you're watching on YouTube, you can see the bracket up here that not put up. Syracuse wake forest. Syracuse is the 8 wake is the 9. Is he going to lose one and done? And it's Jim baham going to coach his last game of Syracuse. Someone's going to ask him if he's going to retire.
