"Superstar. Stand up comedian. Jim gaffe again. One of the funniest people walking this earth right now and part of the reason. I love this podcast and our sunday. Sit down that you can watch on. Nbc as well is that there was no reason for it. He doesn't really have a movie coming out today. He doesn't really have a standup special. That begins streaming. there's no book to talk about. It's just that we kinda live near each other. And he has taken up cross country skiing something. He has railed against in his standup act. In the past during this pandemic he's got his family up outside of new york city where they typically live for the last year or so to spread out and have some more space his wonderful wife jeannie and their five children living up in westchester county which is north of new york city and he decided to take up cross country skiing. I asked him why despite the fact he's claimed he doesn't like it and as you'll hear him explain it's because it gets him away from his family that no one else wants to go cross country skiing so he bought the skis. He's been doing it up in this park. And he said hey. Why don't you. And i go for a cross country ski and then we can. Just sit and talk so. That's exactly what we did. So what you'll hear it. First is the two of us. I've never been on cross country skis. I'm a pretty good downhill skier. But never done cross country for all the reasons that jim gaffe again rails against because it's the worst part of skiing which is just on flatland. I like the downhill gravity to help. But he claims to like it so he offered to give me a little lesson kind of confessed. He wasn't as good as he claimed and didn't know as much about it as he'd claimed when he pitched it to me but we did it anyway. We had some fun and then we sat down in that same park..

Trump's tax returns and related records turned over to New York district attorney

"I want to move on and talk a little bit about the tax issue and the tax returns. The court ruling could be handed over to the state of New York and and Cyrus Vance, the A G o. It was the prosecutor in this case. Looking into the President. Trump has taxes, his finances, etcetera, etcetera. You're working on that case. Look, I don't know anything about it. I've never seen his tax returns. But from knowing how businesses are run, I doubt there would ever be a billionaire, or frankly, any wealthy person whose taxes would look good. Unless there's a W two and unless somebody's an employee, and unless there are no no deductions available, I would imagine it would be more complicated than the average person's tax returns. Number one and number two. I would imagine that the president Then private citizen, Donald Trump probably hired the best accountants and lawyers available and they were the ones that filled out the taxes and not him. Well, I could tell you this I mean, 45th president. United States did not go down to meet with the local enough No disrespect, Agent or block. Actually, they do a lot of work, but he didn't go down to the local agent are blocking. Sit down and say here, my W two than he lets on my tax return. You're actually corrected. Tax returns are from a business and from his personal Work, which includes media real estate. Real estate tax returns are complicated by nature. He had expert CPS. He had expert tax counsel that prepared the returns. I'm not concerned about the returns we fought, we fought it. During while he was president. We did not think it was appropriate. To be able to seek those records. At least not unless they could show a special height. Need to justice is actually four justices would have agreed with us on height need. I suspected we had Amy Barrett. Now she probably would have to. I don't know that But it wouldn't matter because now the 45th president is the former president. But Come out strategy standpoint, I'm not gonna discuss trial strategy, and I don't think these are going to trial but from a litigation strategy or case strategy when you defend tax cases used the tax returns to defend your case. So this is not complicated. The tax returns may be complicated, but this is not a complicated defense. You know, the president does make a point. I mean, I'm not sure if you followed Merrick Garland's hearing yesterday, but he e mean seemed like he didn't know never picked up a newspaper to may and didn't knows much about anything and wasn't even willing to commit to keep in the dorm. Investigation. Ongoing. We now have a smoking gun email appear. James committed Jim Clapper and in that, he acknowledged, And this was the day that he signed the sex and second Fiza application. Is the first renewal application subsequently signed a third application three of the four and admitted that he was not able to verify The veracity and truthfulness of what we now know is the bunk, which is Hillary's bought and paid for dirty. Russian disinformation dossier, which raises the question of fraud before a FISA court in my mind that seems like a slam dunk. Am I wrong? No, I think I think you're right. I think Merrick Garland has a as a judge. It's a good reputation and former Justice Department official as well. I'm sure he's going to get confirmed. Hopefully, he will apply the law to the fax is that sky is that kind of reputation? He's not an Eric holder in my view at all and again, I think that this is Look, when you have an election go the way it went, however, it went there. The fact is they get to pick their nominees. And while there's already been some objections on others, I don't expect to be much objection. There will be a party line. Objection, but I don't think will be overwhelming. Yeah. You know all these legal issues that the president has dealt with the weed? You know, the president uses the term witch hunt in so many different ways. Look at what this country was dragged through. For three years. You were you were part of following this entire Russian witch hunt. You were involved in everything involving you. You lived for three years. You You lived the first impeachment trial. You know when a quid pro quo when it was only one fact witness Only one it was all based on not even a real whistle blower. But I hear, say, whistle blower, non whistle blower, and, you know everyone that testified was either an opinion witness. Or hearsay witness and nobody had any facts and the only real the only true witness said No, he didn't want to quit port pro or quo. Um at all. He said he wants nothing. He wants to make sure they're not gonna be corrupt and take that to the next level is thin. You got Joe bragging on tape that he leveraged a billion taxpayer dollars so they'd fire a prosecutor. That was investigating his son being paid millions with no experience. Yeah, well, look, I think the fact is that we beat back Bob Mueller. We beat back the first impeachment. We had good success and a lot of the Supreme Court cases. And the second impeachment, which we did not participate. And although we filed a brief with the Senate on the legality issue of whether you can teach the president no longer in office, which we took the position you cannot The president won these battles I He will win these other battles that he's as right now. But look they're trying to. I think it's pretty clear that the moves here are to try to disable him, so to speak. From being able to run again,

Lady Gaga's dog walker shot, French bulldogs stolen in Los Angeles

"Apparently this is happening a lot where there are dog walkers that are getting robbed and they're taking the dogs. Now it got into the news. Because lady gaga two of her french bulldogs got stolen from the dog walker and they shot the poor dog walker in the chest. He is recovering. Somehow some ways able to make it through this thing after getting shot but there's now two dogs that are out there that have been stolen away from a big celebrity. Who is going public about it now. She said that she's going to give five hundred thousand dollars for the return of the dogs would knows no questions. That's the part of it. I was like wait a minute. What do you mean no questions asked you. Wants her dogs back timeout. Out those guys or whoever it is could be gals. Who knows whoever shot. The dog walker needs to go to jail. and jim for if you're hurry you probably think in this is the bait and we'll say no questions asked but really will have and all right if you're the people let's just try to get in the mind of a criminal for a second if you are the people that stole those there. There's no way that you're full in for. The no questions asked thing because wherever the meeting place is going to be you know. It's going to be surrounded by police officers because they committed multiple crimes. So you can't fall for that if you're the criminal you like you know what i know. Five hundred thousand dollars is a lot. But we're gonna go to jail because there's say lady gaga dad is talking about the actual victim of the crime. You know the guy was shot. The dog walker who shot and he's openly saying we want to bring these perpetrators to justice so i wanna get that. Yeah i mean. I understand how valuable the dogs are to all of us. We all were lovers. We know that absolutely would want to have to have our dog taken but first things first the dog walker was shot. Now the second thing was dogs were stolen. You have multiple primes here. Yeah i know. I mean it's really bad and these people need to get taken off the streets and they need to be in jail and he beat prosecuted. I guarantee you. They find them within the next forty eight hours. You think sharon t you well. They took out of the video. Yeah they do. Have the video of the people realize how many video cameras are up everywhere. John Getter, took his own life just hours after he was charged with two dozen crimes, including human trafficking. And sexual assault get led the U. S women's gymnastics team to a gold medal at the 2012 Summer Olympics. Joining us now is NPR Sports correspondent Tom Goldman. Hey there, Tom. Hi, Mary Louise. What else do we know? Well, we have confirmed that John get hurt, killed himself. Hours after he was charged. He was supposed to turn himself in this afternoon. He'd been investigated for the last three years. His investigation grew out of the Larry Nasaa retrial. Yes, sir, of course, was convicted of sexually abusing many, many female athletes, including some of the most famous U. S Olympic women, Jim Nous, and throughout his investigation get, ERT steadfastly maintained his innocence and that he wasn't aware of what NASA or was doing. Well, what else do we know about this? There were two dozen charges that the state of Michigan announced today. What what exactly was getting accused of having done? A Michigan attorney General Dana Nessel, um announced yes, the two dozen charges and 20 of the 24 counts for for human trafficking and forced Labor and Attorney General, Nestle explained. Human trafficking charges in a press conference today, it is alleged that John Getter used force fraud and coercion against the young athletes that came to him for gymnastics training for financial benefit to him. Victims suffer from disordered eating, including bulimia and anorexia, suicide attempts and self harm, excessive physical conditioning. Repeatedly being forced to perform even when injured Extreme emotional abuse and physical abuse, including sexual assault. Now. Mary Louise, Um Attorney General, Nestle acknowledge that cases like this don't often involve human trafficking, she said. We think of it predominantly is affecting people without the means to protect themselves from this type of crime. But she said, it can obviously affect all types of people in this case, young elite female athletes and she said. The alleged victims still carry the scars of those crimes to the state. Yeah. I said there are ties between Get ERT on Larry Nassar. What were the ties? Yeah, we'll get her was AH, longtime owner and coach at a gym near Lansing, Michigan on Git was there where hundreds of women say Larry NASA are abused them. Now Starr was the team physician and in house medical expert and get her. It's Jim for about 20 years. One of the charges today was that get lied to police about Nassar's role as the physician at his gym get hurt, allegedly told police he had never heard any complaints about Nassar's treatment of athletes. Although at least one prominent athlete contradicts that. She said she was with a group of fellow Jim Nous and get hurt, and she mentioned that NASA had abused her, She says her teammates gasped. Israel Begins Phased Reopening To Citizens With Proof Of 2 COVID-19 Shots

"Life might be like as the pandemic lessons. It is vaccinated a higher portion of his citizens than any other country, about a third of had both doses. And this week is real started opening new doors to people who've had their shots. NPR's Daniel Estrin reports that includes places like gyms and the theater. Many businesses in Israel still aren't ready to open. But it's opening night at the first Israeli Indoor theater to put on a play after months of lockdown, Adam thinking and usher at Jerusalem's fun theater checks, tickets and something called a green pass, just taking their green a passport. It's called Check that they have been vaccinated or that there were sick and then the better Israelis one week after their second shot or recovered from the virus can print out a government issued green Pass. "Now as we lead into this this hopefully winning stage of war. We're going speaking of fun competitive. It's always fun. When the white sox and cubs are good at the same time because of the rivalry. And and i say rival arena. Sense a city rivalry. It's not a baseball rivalry in the you play each other six times during the year. I feel like such a great time during the year because you got the south side versus the north side cubs fans and white sox fans and it is so i enjoyed it so much. How much did you love playing those games whether it was on the south side or at wrigley field. I absolutely loved it. You know it was for me. You know playing in cleveland. Ohio cup. With the reds. And then you know when. I was with the socks and in winter wrigley for the first time and experience that it was like whoa. This is real. This is this is intense and not that there was any bitter feelings to the cubs players. It was you know in living here. The fans are the ones that created. This which i think is so great living here in the winter and knowing how the south side and the north side that back and forth a go you two years ago when all when we were rebuilding the cubs. Were really really good. I said to myself. I can't wait for the day when both of our teams are really good and you know it might being one of the better cities now of baseball competition between two teams in the city. That baseball has and i. It's just gonna be a fun time. We we love it. As far as where we're at and i know i know the cubs of ever really done a fine job with everything they've done as well so will it'll be exciting to just let that play out while we've had a ton of find sitting down talking with you baseball and life in your hall of fame stuff you've had this incredible career. Jim you hit a ton of homers man. I want to jog inside your brain i wanted. I wanna see how much you can remember. This is who served up my homers. Okay now six hundred and twelve homers. This what i did. Cherry pick a few and i figured we could try and knock them out and see how well you remember who took deep by the way. I didn't make the list which is really really reassuring are about six hundred twelve homers. There were two other people though. So here we go all right. I'm not number one on the list. Your very first homer you gave up. Who is it. steve thought. Well steve far. It was in yankee stadium. It was far too. It was a bomb. We'll go with that one number. Three hundred number. Three hundred was my buddy mark. Clark was milton all. No you're right you're right. It was milton. I got so clark was two hundred. I believe in milton was three bad. I should've went more in numerical order..

When his father passed he put a check for a million dollars in his pocket video here. That was like ten million or something. I really so i have issues with jim. Carey in each speeches are heavy with them. Why would imagine you would. I mean you're fairly outspoken. In your atheism. Jim is completely on the other side right. Whereas now it's not religion but it's it's the every time there's a comp- that commencement speech he does and everybody in comedy who has never made it parsh- that fucking speech and lies farther would have been a great comedian but he just didn't have the gusto to do it and then he lost the job and i realize you can lose your job doing something you hate. Why not do something you love. And it's like first of all jim your extraordinarily talented extra like like a once in a lifetime talent like with the vices. And all that stuff. We've never never really jerry. Lewis is the only thing that's close we've never really locking. He's one of the con- be a fan of these but you have to admit he's one of the car right right and so you and late proforma wants to stand in front of people who shit fucking performing and tell them that they should befall because you've made billions of dollars is the most misleading fucking thing and will destructive thing. You can do in society. That can't going for years past longer than they should. This is all commencement speeches. I give everything's threes and it's not progressing. Quit and try something new like that's pretty good. That's you should give that commencement speech. Jim no shit like we talk about this on the podcast a lot. Where forgive me for quoting myself. It's the most you can do. But i say follow the dream. That's also following you. Meaning if it's not if it's not there. Your talents probably lie elsewhere but because our culture values famous people rich people funny people. Everyone kinda gets in that line when you might be a brilliant wood. And then we do the ads and that would be the show but now because of quarantine and zoom and everybody being in different locations. It's gotten very complicated. has it not sonal. It has like right now. We're at largo. Which is where you shoot your show right largo theater in west hollywood right and it's not the ideal setting because it's the opposite of soundproof. It is a building with paper thin walls on the boulevard. I swear to god you hear everything you hear everything. We have to keep waiting while if a butterfly passes outside the studio we have story. We have to stop and then go again. 'cause the butterflies always crashing into trash cans in the alley and knocking them over. It's just a very loud and and you know jim. Parsons is coming to us from. I don't even know where he's coming to us from new york. Yeah in new so jim. Parsons is in new york. We're in an abandoned theater on lafayette boulevard with paper. Thin walls just massive holes in the walls. People leaning in bystanders construction project people can just lean in and look at what the crane is doing. And you're in a separate room right sonal. See you're on stage right now right now. I am in one of the dressing rooms. And i think i'm being quieter than usual because i'm worried. If i speak loudly you will hear me from the dressing room. That would be a problem for the engineers and matt gory. Of course you are at home right. Yeah yes in pasadena. So you're comfortable anyway. You didn't have to move. He's comfortable that's true. Yeah trust me. It's always clear who puts this thing together. Matt says well. I think i'll be at home and then conan. Why don't you go to the fire trap on las vegas. I'm no dummy and now you're not you're not at all no one ever said you were a dummy but it's been very. It's very complicated. I'm not complaining. We have to like no wait a minute. You are planning planning your plan complaining especially. I shouldn't be complaining because we're lucky. We're lucky everybody's doing a good job making this thing work. And it's been difficult because there's a pandemic and everybody's using the internet everybody's zooming everybody right. Now so the traffic's heavy those other teams i think ours zooms should take precedence over other. I wish there was a way that zoom could tell like Okay these people are having a meeting to decide what the new font on their brochures should be way. I we send said. Conan o'brien needs a friend is using this line. Let's shut everything else down. You're talking about like a one percenter zoom or like four seasons. Yes i wanna. I wanna exactly. I want the exact. This is the worst time to introduce this idea one. Yes it's called the elitist zoom. I wanna be in a special elitist zoom where even if medical professionals are trying to have a contest on how to say see. I'm doing a podcast. They all get the cdc's like we may have a cure. "Today's episode is about a boy named Jim Henson whose life was changed when his family got their first TV. He saw those shows the actors on them and the stories they told and decided that he wanted to be on television himself someday. Jim Henson was born in September nineteen, thirty, six in Mississippi. His family love jokes and laughing Jim spent a lot of time with his grandparents who helped him create amazing art projects. He also loved to go to the theater and watch movies and especially loved Westerns and movies that took place in far off places. He and his friends would spend their playtime dressing up and acting out the movies they saw using homemade props and they're big imaginations. Jim also grew up listening to radio broadcasts shows and his favourite performer was Edgar Bergen Ventriloquist of entr. ill-equipped is someone who can talk without moving his lips or mouth. Jim saw this and thought it was amazing. Later his family moved in Maryland and they purchased their first. TV when Jim was just thirteen years old jim watched a show called Kuka friend and. which featured puppet performers he loved the way. The puppets appeared to be real creatures that people could laugh with share stories with and be friends with. The puppets were alive in a way and that was magical. Jim Dreamed about being on television himself. As soon as Jim turned sixteen, he started looking for a job in television with all the local stations. Sadly, they all said No. This was hard for Jim. He didn't give up. He later heard that one of the stations was looking for a puppeteer. So checked out some books on puppetry built some puppets and applied for the job. He got the job building puppets for a Saturday morning. Children's program called the morning show with hard work practice and determination he was accomplishing his goal. Jim Henson. Went to college at the University of Maryland College Park in college took a puppetry class and produced a puppet show called Salmon friends for W RC TV. The puppets in the show or early versions of what would later become the muppets including a prototype or version of kermit the. FROG. Jim worked on the show he invented new puppetry and filming methods that are still in use today such as allowing the puppeteer to work off camera by using the frame defined by the camera shot. At this time, most puppets were made from wood and we're not very expensive. Instead Jim used fabric covered foam rubber to give his puppets greater ability to express emotion. Instead of strings he is rods to manipulate the puppets also increase the range of expression of the puppets. While Jim was working on the salmon friends show he met and worked with Jane Neville another student at the university they would later begin dating eventually got married in Nineteen fifty-nine. The success of Salmon Friends led the Henson's puppets appearing on talk shows like the Steve Allen show the Jackpot program and the Ed Sullivan Show. These are similar to Jimmy Fallon and Jimmy. Kimmel, shows in our day. Henson's puppets also became famous when they were used in TV commercials such as the Wilkin Coffee Company commercial in Washington DC. In nineteen sixty, nine Jim was asked to join the team working on a new children's program called.

"Hello and welcome to South Beach Sessions. I am an old person I am over fifty, and so this name is coming out of the past Jim Belushi. If you do not know the Belushi name brother obviously helped invent Saturday night live made it very popular. He lost him very publicly and Jim Belushi was given a career by his brother, and now he is basically a marijuana farmer. He is televising his marijuana farming growing Baluchi is on the discovery channel and I want to talk here to interesting people about interesting things. No matter who they are, what age they are or where they're from this marijuana business seems like a real interesting Goldrush and his life has been interesting. So we're GONNA talk to Jim Belushi about that show marijuana farming and also in the middle of. This, what's going to happen is you're going to hear if you have no interest in Jim Belushi or the Baluchis you need to stick around for is in the middle of this, there is a moment where Mike, Ryan starts wandering around just shaking his fist triumphantly because he is happy that the grief eater can make an appearance he's making fun of me and I am celebrating. With him and during grief eating moment I punched the microphone and you will hear that you should just listen to that point. Even if you're not interested in anything else here, you should just listen to how awkwardly I punched the microphone accidentally because Mike is Celebrating my grief eating and I am mortified and flailing out but in my regrets actually because he was talking about some pretty. Awful of you, but at least people can laugh a little bit before we get to the end of this because we cover some serious go but I enjoyed talking to Jim Belushi. So here he is. Jim, how did you get into the marijuana business? It seems very competitive these days it seems like a lot of people are trying to make some of that marijuana money. Well we we'd like to refer to it as cannabis by the way it there was a gold rush into the recreational expansion legalization of cannabis. that's for sure and I kinda got into that because I have this farm in Oregon Ninety three acres and I know what the grow and it was legal in Oregon. And I went well the new agriculture. And so I started growing from forty eight plants and now I'm up to you know. These. Eight hundred points. How difficult is it like what what has happened that you didn't expect I imagine that that's part of what the show coverage, right? It's farming. I I'm an actor I. Say other people's lives right now I'm going other people's plants Farming I mean I have done a study. I look I'm a little different than the other people are they're licensing their names to make money? I'm a farmer agriculturists that this point? I've got my metaphor cold bachelor degree on this TV show growing Belushi is basically my master's thesis. is about farming. It's about growing an atmosphere marijuana and all the challenges that we run into the main challenge is what most farmers fight. Go, first..

"Anyway your your memoir memoirs and misinformation which you co wrote. Wait you worked on it with this Guy Dana Vashon? Writer. Wonderful. What's fascinating about this is anyone thinks a celebrity. Memoir they all think the same thing and this is because it's coming from you. It's not what anyone that's actually what I might expect but a lot of this is not a Jim Carrey memoir that anyone would expect in the normal sense and why find amazing is that you must have been working on this for a long time. The writing I think is is really Quite good and there's a lot of really funny and dark stuff in here. But you're basically writing about the end of the world and it comes out during Cova. So I feel like you knew something that we didn't know. Well, it's it's amazing when we started working on this thing, it was it was like an eight year conversation that turned into a couple years of intensive. Creative work and we put our hearts and souls into. Yeah. It was. It was amazing as the time got nearer to releasing the book that we started noticing all these incredibly kind of weirdly. Prophetic things that are happening and suddenly there is a riot on Rodeo drive and there is yes all of these guys that are happening and and not to mention I think as as a writer when you when you light yourself actually. Write down and and home what's coming rather than what you think. They might like you know there's there's some weird clairvoyance thing that happens when you open yourself up to the universe it knows better than you do what's about to happen what I found to be really crazy is that first of all I, love this device I'll call it call it a device but US real celebrities in the book so Jim Carey. Here's what an oxymoron that. I'm is just as real as anyone. But you know what I love is that first of all I've I've we've known each other for a quite a long time been to your house a bunch of time. So it's odd because you're describing Jim Carey who? Missing to man and I'm a little bit worried about I wanNA talk to you. What am I goes is not accounted for. Really, very you know what I found is very hard to sell a Jim Carey Golden Globe very hard thing to sell people are very worried about getting kind you have to change its drew. chiseled out the gym and I tried to I tried to write in drew with a sharpie but. A lot of the a lot of the people were suspicious. But I've been to your house and it's funny because when you're writing about Jim Carey at home, it's very funny and surreal but there are also elements that I think. I've been there and I feel like, yes. This is kind of a depiction of you at home, but it's also not you've stretched it out in. It's insane and you have this very powerful electric fence and you have these dogs that cost hundreds of thousands of dollars that are trained to show you affection and love me. You can't get anywhere. At this point. This but one of the things I really loved is that you have your name dropping name checking people left and right and you're hanging out with them and it's hilarious because you the Jim Carrey. In the book has this incredibly insane relationship with Nicholas Cage. And Kelsey grandma always from reality. It really isn't. Apparently one you created dinosaurs go for a million dollars. Stretched their. Stretch. Yeah. You being one of the greater most. Most incredible eccentric characters living among us and and always always fun to have around and to to exchange creative ideas with. So we've had a thing going for a Lotta years. We have this thing called the Ob Dobie award that we had back and forth between just the two of us. A lot of tension about who's going to get it is a big tense moment and someone's announced. But yeah, that's a fun part of this. It's like. You got to do a book on Persona and a transcending persona you have to use some percents. Ultimate yes. Is Hollywood I loved I was laughing out loud is one of the things I wrote about as I laughing out loud a you Kelsey grammer keeps appearing in the book and we all know Chelsea's manner and his way of speaking and this he's that way in real life as well. So he keeps showing up in the book and there are moments where people are saying Kelsey fucking. There's a there's like a girl, Hussein Kelsey please and he keeps interrupting. Yes. Yes. Yes. Cross dot. Kelsey. Does this wonderful thing that I've loved for years his his his palm his. Befuddled arrogance and you know whatever it is that he does is just amazing. So he was the perfect character to cast in that part of the guy that's such an dedicated Essien that he loves the sound of his own voice and he needs to express himself he because he needs to hear himself he needs. You know which is true of a lot of us. There's a lot of different characters and and I'm starting starting to trickle in. Now the reactions and things nick cage loves it gave him all the best line so I never. Really, happy because they couldn't really hurt if he didn't like it have you heard from Kelsey not yet not yet Joan Dangerfield. emailed. "I get the whole thing but at the same time no go on vacation swimming pool so well you know it is interesting because because there are people jim view lost thirty pounds you lose wrecked. Its new act every while so it's but I think there is this you craft a persona craft a persona and you will it's point of view and the reality is people change their point of view. I'm not saying that you'RE GONNA go back to drinking. I'm saying that you're going to evolve you. In ten years might have different opinions and which goes back to from my point that this arrogance that humans think that we have it all figured out when our views evolve hopefully yeah chain yeah as himself. It's not necessarily for better or worse. It's just different but but do you feel like whereas a normal person never has to contemplate whether or not their audience is going to join them on this evolution. You would be irresponsible not to wonder Is this new direction I'm going in. I'M GONNA alienate. Here's the thing what makes your friendship or your relationship with your wife so dynamic. It's that you're challenging each other. There's there's still some mystery. There's some surprise there's and the her approval of me is not a foregone conclusion devalue that by the way it's probably harder to acquire yeah and so the thing about stand up the comedian with the audience. It's you have to challenge them like I have a friend todd glass who occasionally will open for me and he's like you're always purifying your audience like you'll elsa out. You'll have a joke in there. That will say hey. This is who I am. I think that we live in this age of this exhibitionist voyeuristic era where you have to reveal something which by the way is why podcasts are so popular is because people are revealing things in blur funny. Authenticity Tissot is so cherished so but my point with the stand up is that you have to challenge like the great friends who have they will challenge and you and they'll say d really believe that you know that's bullshit tax hit. You don't really believe that and you might go fuck you but then you're like you know what yeah maybe you're right so oh like having you know on my seven special or touring into city like Atlantic City for the thirteenth year in a row. Oh with new material is that that audience knows that I'm GonNa be funny. There's also an expectation that I'm going to surprise them. A little uh-huh. Maybe I'M NOT GONNA. I'm not GONNA do magic tricks but I'm going to talk with. You and I'm GonNa talk about something that makes them uncomfortable but maybe opens up a little bit yeah now. It sounds like I'm over promising just saying like you have to evolve. I think the best example of it is stern. It's like if you compare the show today to twenty five years. You can't even compare the two and I think so many people argue with about stern. They're arguing from when he was entre stroh radio the last time they heard them twenty years ago. We don't like that Guy Right. He threw Baloney girls asses and I'm like I can't defend that but it's it's been a long time through Baloney. It's the way it's an he's also somebody that has a teflon ability like if you lined up his crimes uh-huh oh sure sure sure I tell you what the whole thing is. We're just really I think drawn to hypocrisy so he's never purported to be some pillar of morality eighty. We're not tearing the rogue off of him. You know what I'm saying. It's like he's owned his his shadiness in a way that there's no story there well. I think there that might be true but I think that there's an additional teflon ability that if things don't stick to him they are things. Don't stick to him and it's a a very unique person. I'm not complimenting it or criticizing it. I'm just saying you're away with murder. Oh sure you're and other people they're like look at that Shirt Day war. I are Never GonNa forget absolutely okay so you have a bunch of stuff coming me now. You've been a very busy beaver. Yes you have a movie on August second called them that follow. I was right to guess that it's a little bit dark ark. It's darn it's it's about a religious call. It's a pentecostal snake healing church in Appalachia APPALACHIA. I'm going to mispronounce it high and I play the husband of Olivia. Colman career seems to be going all right and Walton. Walton is done at playing the minister and so it's a pretty soon amazing castle. There's so many amazing people in that comes out in L. A. On August second can't National August ninth and then August sixteenth is Amazon. You have a comedy special and it's their first comedy special versus comedy special. It's called quality time quality time okay now now. The big thing is American Dreamer on September twentieth. Yes it's the movie that I want directors and producers to see if they can go. Oh Wow he can act yes yes. That is what I want to happen. Who Do you play in that? I play a rideshare driver in Norfolk Virginia who is kind of down on his luck and who ends up driving around around a drug dealer. Some people are rideshare drivers. It's kind of like a side hustle or whatever and then there's some rideshare drivers that are crazy so so I'm more of the latter okay. I'm this Guy Cam so it is it's a it's a larger look at entitlement when in late entitlement and stuff like that and so there's a lot of heavy heavy stuff that happens in it. That's one of the topics I'm most fascinated by yeah. It's the white male entitlement. It's really interesting because playing this guy you know I I mean acting particularly where you're playing this character later that is so complex and you sit there and go. I want people on board for the first twenty minutes and then I want to plant the seed. It's in the script but you WANNA plan to see wait a minute. Maybe this should I be rooting for this guy and then the last act you're like. I can't believe I ever liked this guy. You know the driving force of this character actor is he can't believe he has to deal with this stuff right which is just that encompasses entitlement yeah well. If you grow grow up hearing your whole life you could be president in you. You know there's some kind of expectation yeah that when not met its skies can't even understand it incomprehensible yeah. I'm not supposed to be in by the way it's in you know it's weird also portraying someone like this. You have have to not have any doubts about his decision making process so it's so fun to shoot it and then you get done in someone's it's like I can't believe your character did that. In your mind you're going. That's only could do really start defending. Were so like I'm so crazy. I'm like what's wrong with that. Yes you end up. Defending this insane behavior will in order to play this as well worn. Everyone knows but yeah to play a serial the real killer successfully you can't be in judgment of the serious issue dimensional yeah. No serial killer thinks they're a bad guy. They think they're they're a great guy. Look when I read it. I was like this is a an amazing opportunity because no one's GonNa think that I'm going to go there right one it screened at the La Film Festival. What's it like see people kind of like just kind of like physically turning like why would you do that right you know what I mean and then also horrendous things happening and then he just Kinda goes on because by the way that's what happens in life? Life is what happens in life is horrible things happen and the world continues to Spin Will Jim. We're going to see all the things we're going to see them that follow. WE'RE GONNA watch quality time on Amazon and then we're going to go to movie theater need some popcorn on September twentieth and watch American Dreamer. We're going to support you your loveable kind person thank you I recommend anyone who's planning a Trans American flight from. La to New York you're not you can't find a better servcie partner thing so we held hands during before during the turbulence and then I will say I told Jim that I would be capable of landing the plane and he did not feel any safer than you do. When I offer well Jim thanks thanks for comment you for having me and here's where like the The podcast music comes in the desert songs. We played the Bird Dance Birdsong meals all right. "Barry was the guy who you know he was. The first guy who said the Federal Reserve was was up. It was going all wrong and I used that Africa's Barry was saying things are getting too expensive businesses slowing down. You have guys on who tell the truth and it's remarkable doctors who like I don't wanNA open heart surgery but if I had to write what what's the balance though you're talking about people's money you see your talking about the people's money and you're giving people tips. What's the balance between entertainment in serious talk because the way I feel like I'm a big gambler right and not don't it was says I can't Campbell of course but you are kind of like you know how we do a show called Barstool sports visors where it's about hamming it up up in having fun in probably a little less about the picks. You obviously are a lot about the picks that information so what's that balance like well look. I think if I don't entertain the people watch the stocks can be inherently boring so we have to work in a lot of jokes that work in a lot of cultural references because Google you can work in Shakespeare beautiful you one you can work in anything baseball anything football the have to so. I would say that obviously the entertainment is probably about twenty five percent because because we got to get people in one of the reasons why I think we've been successful as we recognize we have to entertain. It is a joy to entertain. You get a lot of callers because Eh Sunshine Yo but you know I pal people. That's what they a stream. You're an ice cream chocolate. Oh Hey one time they gave me strawberry. I had the run every time I say. This is strawberry right to the next thing strawberry so it's like you have a bad stock is strawberry right run for galaxy ice cream to know people people now think people used to get you sell them Schmitz. everyone wanted wanted. Schlitt right here like Milwaukee famous right walk. He looks like he take Milwaukee Schlitz Very Jim. who was did you think of a mentor the you had and what lessons did you learn from that mentor? It's my dad. My Dad was all about honesty rigor toughness. My father always wanted wanted me to be the toughest guy. He said you know I know you're not the biggest guy but be the toughest guy and be honest and forthright and I love that because it's true north you never go wrong on whether to do for a living. He sold boxes and bags dealers. Oh man he had a big month in October when he died at ninety two and November turns out he had a big breath in October. I didn't know that the irs came after me sold a lot of box at a lot of bags that the mother before he passed and not yet a huge working all October. I mean like I'm still you know this coun- mm commission. Did you throw away the receipts as pop had a big October but died November right but he had a good good October baseball. Yeah yes ask Mister October. So do you think you'll work to the day like he did. I sure hope so yeah. I sure hope so. There's no slowing down. No no speedup beat up now. It's time of it here everyone else in my my high school classes retiring i. This is the time to really go full throttle right right. Who would you say the three or four or five. Just you know the berries of the world they think are absolute. rockstars investing space in investing space okay so we're going to say is getting Lynch Ran Magellan. He's he was unbelievable. He taught all of us and one on Wall Street is still the best single book ever. What's it called one up on Wall Street. I mean it. It's just a pure joy book i-mode I love it. I like Byron Wean who works at Blackstone own and he's got a tremendous view. is another older gentleman really good. You know about him. He's he's phenomenal. I like Dave Tepper who owns the panthers. He was my boss at Goldman and one time I came down. I wanted to buy sell bonds for this company. Primorac which was an Donovan Company and there was about a thousand people on the floor of the of Goldman Sachs in the bottom floor and I came down. I said listen Dave. He was headed junk stave I'd like to I think I can get a lot of points. Look if I sell these primer bonds and goes everybody. Listen Up. I got a first class jerk who want it's a cell. Primorac bonds and hurt all his customers and make fools of them. What's your name. Assuming Jim Jim Coach's his name is Jim Cramer and he is going to gaff every single customer and this guy is a disgrace. Get off my floor and I said well. Is there any way to redeem myself. He Goes Yup never get off my so he owns the panthers the one of the greatest investors ever stick and a great sense of humor the best years years later. He said he was pretty funny that thing with the pods it's kind of funny talk for me yeah kind of like Jon Stewart Good Yeah how how how was like looking back to the John Stewart. I meet my best yeah. Yeah I look back data's Abbas appearance. You know homerun kind of a home. Rice route is playing football. You're not allowed to invest in the stock market. No no so what do the investing if you don't mind my wife does real estate yeah do that. We have a lot of real estate real state. A lot of real estate held real estate bars yeah restaurants. It's re this so I'm I'm. I don't play the stock market the stock market. It's a foreign language to me. Okay I inherently in the cynic in me thinks it's raked look. I think that's a great question because often I have a piece tonight that talks about a subtle little rigging. It's I think it's rigged for the big guys first of all when I say that most stocks costs a thousand dollars Russell Wilson buys stock for Amazon Zahn Stock First Offensive Line's great little guy can't afford that right and so to me they should split the stocks and allow little guys in that's why I say it's rigged toward the big guys because these stocks that are thousand Bucks Alphabet Google thousand. Two hundred bucks. We'll you know that just keeps out the little guy they used to split these stocks so that the little little guy could own stock they had made it so it's too expensive per share now what they'll say. Oh give me a break. It doesn't matter it's you know it's all the same company but that is to me away to keep the little guy out instead. They make them being all these. ETF's they should own stocks and ETF's. Also I mean they used they used to be the Franklin. Roosevelt said we shouldn't allow the shortsellers to bang down stocks. We got rid of that too so a lot of the smart guys banged down stocks now. You're loud the short. I'm not against that but these are the things that make us for. The little guy gets scared. FLASH CRASH LITTLE GUY GETS SCARED December. The market goes bad little guy gets here so they're just scared and we need to protect them and one of the things I try to do and money's protect the little guy because the little guys can be a big guy if you don't drive them out the little guy can go by Amazon two hundred bucks or by Apple. It's fifty but no no no. I mean they've made it so that the dollar amounts are so big that little shopping streets they. I can't buy a tenth of a share now. They do have these little things where you can buy shares but but they're not right in Berkshire hathaway because that's that's a great example era. That's a great example stock was at two hundred bucks when I started to go out and that was a reasonable and the and then it goes to one hundred thousand regular person can't quote houses so I think it's rigged in the sense that big boys have an edge. At what are you invest in. I don't know what I'm saying like. I don't really invest in anything A-ROD CORTO public. I inherently think that it's especially you know obviously the crash happens in two thousand nate and then nothing changes and and everyone stays in power and all the rich people can make you know that's the Gatien of what happened now when they when they had the crash of eighty seven there was a big treasury investigation and we found exactly who were the bad guys know investigation. The government plays no role. The exchanges changes are absent. This must stop the government must get involved to protect in. Milken was one of the few that got in trouble. I know an awful lot of pizza and a lot of good cinde rebel. Abo- with cancer over one hundred million dollars major league baseball eight it back he all the way to me. He is redeemed himself and he's a good man and we need the government to be involved to protect checked a little so how how do how do people our listeners who are probably more like me than they are like a rod and I mean that in terms of you know our pocketbooks folks. Chechen more money okay with the CBS cable to see how do how does someone who's like me or younger than me a millennial be like hey look. I WANNA play the stock stock market. I've no no fucking idea what to do and guess what I think. It's rigged. Well Okay so you look at long-term. It's not rig so what you do is you buy. I was in when I lived in my car which she was not exactly a great time although as a chick magnet thing your place or mine and put in the left Mesa we'll put it off. We'll have somebody that somebody I really don't need it. All shares index you buy the Shares Index Fund and then in overtime that really does work and it'd been great for me away from my kids. Even when I was living my car put under house wage month would my was was a detriment to a lot aww I liked but I was born and and been robbed and everything but I still had money to invest in so you take a longer term view yes short-term. It does feel very rigged right and I think that's an important thing and putting away money every month because I think that's something that probably my generation does not and that's what they have to do and I know that it seems like a boring thing but if you put it away every month it does compound because like you take stock like Pepsi. They keep playing dividend paying dividend paying dividend. They've doubled their dividend ten years. That's a great stock to own. If you've done your index rex fun maybe buy one hundred shares Pepsi. I mean that kind of thing. I've got a lot of stocks that I recommend and I feel very strongly. That investing is for everybody but people have have to recognize that if they don't have the time or inclination they should do index yeah so jim a little rapid fire because I I think in round yeah and it has to be one word it can be you just a short central on some of these. CEOS Warren Buffett best in show Jamie diamond unbelievable radio really smart. Dan Loeb Clever Can Griffin Rich Jeff Basil's brilliant Elon Musk Weirdo. Oh sorry I born born in last one mark Zuckerberg nefarious because he'd sell you sell your name you'd sell any he's probably sold me while I'm talking right to the Russians Chilean probably soldier the comms what is like vesting in in a company that you might not morally agree with what they do. I mean for instance. I won't let people I always say about Philip. Morris Altria say now right. They like life's too short. Just not gonNA recommend those guys. I mean Cole. No thank you I got enough trouble so if you're a young listener and what you have many and everyone in my staff by the way I hide my staff because my staff never misses you. Thank you thank you but let's just say Jim. I said Jim had a million dollars explained to me. How how you would diversify that across the board okay so if you could invest this if you can't is that yes if you could invest in this late in the cycle. Okay well what I would do. it depends on your age. If you're in your fifties and sixties you went eighty percent in the stock market index for twenty twenty. Oh my you want to be as aggressive as possible awesome..

I want to start with the bar and the restaurant so you own half of it. What what made you get into. Is this before because we've got to set the scene for the people why we're sitting here. We'll be started with Bar San Miguel which is a small plate Mexican place. That's a model after a bar is in San Miguel de Mexico. We have house there. It was just too much fun. We happen to love. Florence Michelle. You in is a great chef. My my wife Lisa love to run the front. we think it's great joy. Put a lot of people to work. This is Florentine. I happen to love Florentine but you can see it's this little nicer are the places tavern and I like to be with people because member. All I do is stare at the camera and you look you know how solo it is at the plate. Okay you know sodas. What is I do talk to know and suddenly what happens is. I talked to people and I love it and by the way the millennials had not a clue who I am Yup. Is there stupidest. Would apply yeah so air form. We're we're going to get to that in and the stock market in millennials and however infuse it. Let's go. Let's start at the beginning so I was doing a lot of reading up on your beginning you start. Actually your first job was at a baseball state. Yeah I killed. It killed it. I was I moved. I started with COQ. Okay and you know it's good and I had the record for double header against the cardinals was really great when they go extra in each. You're GONNA crush it. Okay Steve Quality always had too much ice cream after I moved up ice cream and get this. This is the way you play okay. It's about monopoly early on you realize Napoli. I paid every other vendor not to go opt the seven hundred level. Why was only ice cream much. Nobody visits. I'm cleaning. I'm making forty fifty bucks except for Jim Carlton too too quickly quickly and that was the secret. This secret was to pay off the other guys to stay away from my dad interesting right and they take for little bug they get eight Jim. Jim's got to seven hundred seven US work right. I mean you know and that's how I learned to cope people on the show as skip chief. They chief me all the time. I was always cheapie chief people. I think it's a term of endearment John Talking about the phillies. Were you and I'm trying to picture you know you're such a great baseball fan fan. Were you a Mike. Schmidt P Rose Alton Smitty I when when she had three runs and then he struck out in the fourth time I didn't do. That's not my scene yeah. No I didn't do not a true Philadelphian. Look Santa Claus batteries out of Santa Hat. Damn bad here. Everyone thinks that Santa was innocent. You see his numbers on. I mean you and I didn't throw it because I couldn't get that for. I mean I would have hit. Somebody probably a nice fan. We have a lot of Nice fans. That's why we had at the jail to separate the audience from the nut next fans Yup. I think that's what's needed but I loved Smitty. I Love Carlton but the Games didn't last long enough and yeah. We used one of those teams where he won half the game. I mean that's pathetic. I led a wildcat strike which was brilliant because fired all of us thing. You had to reapply all right so your first job obviously in baseball. I thought it was just a cool store to share with everyone. When was the first. What was the first stock you bought? And how old were you. I bought what American economics at twenty seven. It was an Orange Grove company within five days. They had a frost. Wait it out. Okay you know how old are you. I was twenty seven over. Take a lesson learning lesson. That orange is freeze. Yeah Yeah so tell us how you got into the stock market. You haven't gotten you went to Harvard. He went to law school. Walk Right and you started selling stocks. That was your goal with the voicemail. Yeah well what happened is hey. I'm not here right now but you ought to buy a monolithic memories each week. I had a new stock then finally at a guy who made a fortune he called me. Jimmy check for five and tasks. You'll meet you for a couple of years. Five hundred thousand five hundred that's a lot of money and you first thing I did was I lost like thirty thousand and I said listen I can mow lawns I can I can do dishes because your sensitivities wars but but then I came back and I came came back with a vengeance started doing the right thing started watching TV with the ticker had to go to law school. Unfortunately it's a major loss of time time suck but let's picking stocks in answering machine and and then I went to Goldman. Sachs meeting and Goldman hired me and it was not easy. I had to go ten times before I got the job so lawyer. Goma sacks. Tell me the lessons you learned are going to say oh you know what they did was. They shifted me from water. Sales and trading lessons were rigor. Okay the rigor. The rigor that you needed was incredible a just to get the job. One time they call me. Down is a twelve o'clock. They said look sitting in this closet of office and we'll get to you when we're ready to interview you. If five o'clock came out there was I opened. There was nobody there air. Everyone had left so I called the guy who was running the program he goes. Hey it's Goldman Sachs. That's what we do. You leave a guy in for five hours. Hey it was easy to get a job. They bring that kind of let's say humiliation slush expertise and I like it. I get the same thing you know. When I was teaching there. I taught Friday. I didn't like to start to eight. PM Friday and what I did is I gave test at eleven pm and I always posted on Monday. The five lowest scores People's need this. It's a learning west. You're from Philly Philadelphia. I love it. I love it and so so you start there and then you go out on your own hedge funds and talked about the transition going from Goldman Sachs to okay. I can go do this on my own. I can do this with some partners and write my own verse thing thing. I learned where she can't choke people. When you're Goldman can't throw water bottles. You had a famous temper. I had a bit of a temper. I would say that I had I. I would say that I was was volatile. Maybe mercurial judgmental but if you lost me money I mean I did. There was one time when I call the guy's mom and I said listen you know your son unacceptable behavior and I'm going to send him home and he needs to know from Mommy tomorrow if he wants to come back towards a grown man very grown very crony quit the next day you'd you should pay severance. Paul O'Neil with cooler one time I it was a bad day. Market was getting crushed. I'm working my wife. She doesn't like these stores S. Lisa. We love getting crushing. I was doing well. I could not believe how marks down two hundred. US stocks they're holding it turned out to my monitor is broken same prices so I had to a throw that out the window now it's amazing. They made the windows. You can't commit suicide because the twenty nine but yeah I'm as volatile windy announced back. Yes indeed my feet it but I was a sweetheart in the end because I always pay people well. I was the devil and then the sweetheart people care about it was a devil bargain made a bargain with the devil. If you work for me everybody Kinda liked me. Give an okay yeah all right so you're so we're at the Hedge Fund you start also the St. Yeah like what what makes you WANNA do that. You're you're. You're killing it. You're crushing. You're making money. Why would you want to add more things to your plan for some First Class Masochists and what I did was I helped start smart money and I realized that the web was coming in nineteen ninety five so I said listen you smart money dot Com and spent money simple. That'll wipe us out. I said well that's perfect. That's what it's supposed to do and then I decided to do it for myself myself just because I didn't like being talked to like that and I started. We lost a lot of money. Finally you lost about one hundred twenty five mil trying to set a record right I mean didn't some players players for the mets lost about hundred twenty five million. I did with a company. But how did you lose one hundred twenty five mil easily walk me through that well. What happens is that? When can you say you lose ten million dollars a year because you're not selling as much advertising it tends to accumulate over time and you're paying a lot but we had a lot of eyeballs boss see. We were like an audition like we didn't. We're losing money but opthamologist but we had eyeballs and so people wanted us. We were hot stock. We opened at sixty two went to sixty seven next. Stop Two bucks Yeah Yeah but we held in. I mean we were one.
