"Head. I didn't even think about that. Oh my goodness. Thanks for that. I was so sore, but I'm repeat in my head sits that answer, but I gotta try to put that out of my head and ask about the rest of the outfield picture. We talked about jazz, but I wanted to ask about the other guys because Brian de la Cruz, I think, has been kind of a popular breakout pick by some people this spring, so make the case maybe if you agree with that possibility and then the other guys out there, you know, it's solar. It's Jesus Sanchez. It's a Garcia, I guess the layers more of it the H at this point, but those guys were kind of the core of the disappointing Marlins bats last year. So what are the expectations for possible bounce backs from that trio? Yeah, so obviously over C is in as of right now as penciled in for right. Jazz's pencil infra center, Jorge soler, primarily, it looks like he's going to be the DH. They want to try to keep him as healthy as possible. Again, he and jazz both went down about the same time last year. I think it was a day or two apart from each other in late June. And they're offense went from being about middle of the road at that point across all of them. They'll be which with that starting pitching staff that they had, that's really what they needed. And it went from middle of the road, averaged about four and a half runs a game to averaging. I think it was 2.2 or 2.3 runs per game over the final three months of the season, which went from being good enough for the starting pitching staff to being dead last in baseball over the final stretch without jazz and solar. So if they can keep so layer healthy, they can keep jazz healthy, those are the two ideals. Left field, Brian day la Cruz, I would agree. I've been high on him since he made his debut when the Marlins acquired him from Houston in the Amy Garcia trade back in 2021. I liked his makeup. Again, he was back to ball skills. He had the look that those two months that he was up there in 2021. You saw he regressed a good bit in 2022 and then came back strong at the very end. I believe I remember correctly, he led the Marlins in home runs from the time he got called back up toward at the end of the season through the end of the season. It's just a matter of how can he put that together over the course of a full season. And maybe it's him platooning with Jesus Sanchez. Again, dela Cruz is a righty, Jesus Sanchez is a lefty. They have their bench spots they need to fill. They need to figure that out. And if both of them are more profile for the corner outfield, then center. So if they're at the more defensively comfortable position and potentially in a platoon spot, that could help both him and Jesus Sanchez sort of become those guys at the Marlins were hoping they could be with, again, they both have. They both have power. They both have contact in their swings and they will be playing in a more defensively correct position for them if they're in if they're in left compared to the two of them playing senator like they did last year, which was basically out of necessity when the Marlins didn't acquire center field in the off season before 2021. So right now I would think de la Cruz probably is a slight edge on Jesus Sanchez if it's one over the other, but right now I think the platoon is probably going to be the most logical fit for the Marlins there. When I looked back at our top prospect list for Miami last year, you won't be surprised to know that a lot of the top slots are occupied by pitchers. We can talk about some of them in a minute, but when you think about the guys who went down with injury last year, some of their attempts to reinforce the lineup this year among the position players they have in the miners, are there any who strike you as likely to play a big league role at some point this year? Yeah, I would say it's two guys who they acquired in this off season Jacob and I are who they got from the Dodgers and the Miguel Rojas trade and Xavier Edwards who they got from the rays in addition to JT Charlotte back in November. Those two were both in triple-A last year. Amaya is defensively looking like he can hold his own at shortstop, Edwards is a little bit more play some second place, some short play some third. He can move around and fill one of those infield spots. Those would be the top two that I'm keeping my eye on and then also in the infield Jordan Grosjean who they got in the trade with the Blue Jays at the trade deadline for Anthony bass and Zach pop. He debuted last year played play I think it was about two weeks in the final two weeks of the season was all a third base. He would likely stay at third base if he came up. And those would be the three in terms of infielders, outfield, I think they have enough options between the guys who they have if one of the corner outfielders goes down if let's just say obviously Garcia gets hurt, they can move one of dela Cruz or saints just to right field solar could play left field if needed. And then Peyton burdick I think will be the first call from the minor leagues and then Gerard turned out to be on right after him. So they have a little bit more depth there. All of those guys with the exception of a Mayan Edwards have played the big league level. So the Marlins have an understanding of what they can do, what their strengths, what their weaknesses are, granted, it was all small sample size about. I think none of them have more than two months, but it was enough for them to start working with them this off season two, try to get them ready for if they have those scenarios where they need it. Talk about two starting pitchers who went in different directions in 2022. Another popular breakout pick this year is Jesus luzardo, but I think you could argue that he already broke out, certainly relative to his 2021. It's just a question of durability with him as it always is. So he was the good news, the bad news last season was Trevor Rogers, who regressed hard from his breakout in 2021. So give us the outlook for each of those guys is one going to head up the other head out or can they both be successful? Yeah, I think again, Jesus lazaro is the one that outside of Samuel Connor is the one I'm keeping my eye on the most out of the Marlins current projected rotation just if you have a lefty like him again 120 strikeouts in a hundred and a third innings last year made 18 starts obviously missed a lot of time early with that, I believe it was the forearm injury. He missed about two months there, but once he came back, he just, every time he was on the mound, he looked good.

"Boston for Richard blier, JT Charlotte who they got from the raised in November, plus the return of Tanner Scott and Dylan floro, who were the main two who had the closer role last season and Stephen okert who was a 7th 8th inning guy. So they have 6 guys who they're looking after the high leverage roles. And puck at this point is going to be in the pen if health or whatnot predicated it in injuries happen, they could potentially they have an avenue where they could stretch them out to be a starter or but at this point he's going to be a late inning guy, potentially could be a one plus guy in the bullpen, which they're trying to figure that stuff out too 'cause they don't really have a true long man as their options in the bullpen, but they have a lot of guys who can do one to two winning. So they're figuring that stuff out. But with the day, that one, honestly, when the trade happened last week and it caught me by surprise, just because I didn't think they would, they would send them off or give up on them I guess would be the phrase after just one season just two months of giving him time in the big leagues, but when you look at where their outfielder stand at this point, obviously Garcia, jazz and jazz and center, Brian de la Cruz, Jesus Sanchez and Jorge soler all options as well. You already have 5 guys who are expected to be on the big league roster to play outfield. You have John birdy who could play in the outfield as well. They have a couple other guys in Peyton burdick who debuted last year, harrah and Yellen who debuted last year who are other options. So it's story that I feel like the same with what they did with Pablo, but to a lesser extent, they don't know what JJ blay's value is going to be, especially since it was unlikely he was going to crack the big league roster. So if you're able to trade him for a reliever and a quality pitcher in AJ Paul coup, both who similarly, he's under team control for 5 years. So they have a guy who is going to help them now and be with them, be able to be with them long-term. That was more of a looking in the moment looking at how they can improve the present, especially since they were uncertain about exactly where blade was going to fit in, given the current state of what they have outfielder wise at the MLB level. You use the word sore when you were talking about Pablo Lopez's trade value and you can't use the word sore during a Marlins preview without making that play in my

Braves miss chance to clinch NL East, lose 4-0 to Marlins

"The Atlanta Braves will have to wait at least one more day to clinch the national league east title after losing to the Marlins four zero in Miami while the mets were rained out in New York The Marlins jumped out to a quick two zero lead on first ending RBI doubles by Brian de la Cruz and Jesus Sanchez off Bryce elder Dela Cruz then blasted a two run Homer in the third to up the lead to four zero The magic number remains at one for Austin Riley and his teammates His team can do it So I'm not worried whatsoever so I'm not excited to get some sleep denied And kind of regroup and get back after it tomorrow Atlanta will have three chances to clinch on Tuesday with the mets playing a double header while the braise faced the Marlins again I'm Tom

"There's a swing and a miss on another fastball. Two down in the 7th. I hope that it doesn't happen to carnation the way that it happened to Sanchez. You look down at your scorecard. He's got the hat trick with three fastballs. Remember where Jesus Sanchez went to get exposed. Right here. Right here. This very ballpark. Late April, and he was never the same after the hot start to the season. No. And now he's not too far from here playing in gwinnett this weekend for the Jacksonville jumbo shrimp playing the brave stop farm club. Two outs nobody on for Charles Leblanc. He struck out both times tonight. The 5 and 6 spots in the batting order in the block might over 5 with 5 K's. The block one for three last night. Hit a double drill walk in the series opener fouls. This one off his foot, his back foot. And he goes down to a knee, picks himself up and he's limping around a little bit. How do you hit a ball off your back foot like this? He has to put the shin guard in his back foot at some of the front foot. He needs a tall garden. That kind of near the toes, the top of the foot. Wow. Ew, right on the bridge of the foot. Ouch. The ball to strike bases empty two down Marlins down one nothing in the 7th. Minter's pitch swung and missed. This offensive stretch for the Marlins went back to early July. Really hard to describe what we've seen here over the last 52 now 53 games into tonight. On one, two, that's taken for strike three called minter caught him looking at a change up to end the inning. So now 12 of the 13 set down by braves pitchers minter a couple of K's and a one two three 7. Time to stand and sing here in Atlanta. It's the 7th inning stretch at the stretch one nothing braves on the Marlins radio network driven by our nation. Who are you? I'm you from the future. What do you want For their kids recitals. You've compromised enough. Pepsi zero sugar. That's what I like. Take me downtown. I just looking for some touch I've been there working with those topics. Didn't get starter Edward Cabrera. Cabrera went the first 5 innings waskar braza von struck out of here in a one two three 6. Now Richard bryer gets the 7th for the Marlins. "So I wonder whether you think we know something more just from looking at the swing speed? Is it like there are guys who will have high swing speeds, but not high exit speeds and vice versa, or should there be a pretty one to one match there for the most part, at least if you're looking at contact events when you actually do hit the ball? Yeah, I think we don't have enough information to answer this yet. But the number one thing that's going to be most interesting to me is an aging curve. I think because you think about exit velocity, that's an outcome event, right? Like a swing speed, you have full control over how hard you swing it. And just eyeballing it, it's like, okay, well, Leo Rodriguez is very young and at least Robert is young and Jesus Sanchez is at the top is very young and just Chisholm and Bobby witt. And then I noticed like Justin Turner's pretty far down the list and he's 38 and he's actually been pretty good recently, but for most of the year he hadn't. And I don't have the last 5, ten years of his day to say if that's actually any different from the way he always was. But it would be pretty interesting to say, well, you know, his swing is really slowing down. This is going to give me some reason for concern. So that's the one thing, the second thing is I find it really interesting that there are, you know, there's multiple ways to be a good hitter. So let me give you a Michael Brantley example because he's an ASTRO and therefore someone we have a lot of data on. He does not show up very well in this, right? He's a very good hitter, does not show up with particularly interesting swing speed data, presumably that's because he's extremely good at squaring it up, right? Or he's always getting the ball at the sweet spot of the bat. Even though he's not showing elite bat speed. But one idea I had, and I know I was just saying, don't do splits, but I did it anyway just because I wanted to see what would happen is I was curious, you know, do guys have, let's say, a two strike approach. Would guys maybe be a little more controlled with their bat on two strikes? And so I looked at that for the Astros and for example, Jordan Alvarez drops four miles an hour in swing speed from before two strikes to auntie strikes. Okay, sure, Altuve, down 5 miles an hour, sure. Michael Brantley is no change whatsoever. He appears to be using his two strike swing all the time, which I find fascinating. That can kind of go into what kind of hitting approach does this guy have. And if you can do that on counts, you can do that on all sorts of things. Pitch types, high velocity, low velocity, like you name it. I think it opens up a lot of interesting things. So you already mentioned Julio and you mentioned Jordan who I think we would not be surprised to see is ranking well here. Who are some of the other in your extremely limited sample that only looks at contact incent does not include swing and mess, which we are only saying not to give you a hard time but just to remind people of where we are in this, which is exciting nascent stages. Everyone relax. Who's doing who's doing the best here, Mike? Well, it is still who they are Andreas. I don't think he's actually played any of these parks in the last two weeks, so that hasn't changed. I'm very excited right now because literally as we speak, the nationals are getting pounded in Dodger Stadium. But that does mean that Juan Soto is in front of these cameras. And when we did the home run Derby show, he obviously won, but he had the highest, the three highest swing speed rounds, right? If you ordered all of the players and all the rounds, he was number one. Number two, and number three, which was very interesting to me. So I would be fascinated to see how he winds up. But if you were to look at the top ten names, I think 9 of them would probably make some amount of sense to you, right? Like the names I mentioned and also Stanton's up there, Manny Machado, Josh Chisholm, super satisfying, because everybody's seen him turning around a 101 mile an hour fastballs. Pull side. Great. Happy he's up there. Trace Thompson is on the list, which I gotta say, I didn't see coming. And it's like, he's a Dodger, so it's not what he was only there for one game, but also we haven't seen him that much. He just happened to have the three best games of his life in front of the camera. I don't know. But it's interesting. That one stood out and he's actually pretty well on a very good Dodge your team. So I don't know, maybe he's just unable to make contact, but he's got a leap bat speed. I got to say, I enjoyed looking back on old scouting reports of some of these guys. It's just to see how they matched up. Like Joey Bart is now high on the list, even though he can't hit it all. And the Scott and reports on him were 20 hit tool, but very good bat speed. And it's like, great. Wonderful. Perfect. I'm happy that worked out. Yeah, I love that you mentioned in your piece too that Mike Trout at least pre back injury. Hard swing rate, essentially, even though maybe his individual swings don't stand out as extreme, much like I guess his hard hit rate is very high, even though he's not putting up stenton or judgy and individual exit speeds for the most part. So just incredible consistency, basically. Yeah, totally. And you're right. In the same way I don't actually use average exit velocity that much anymore. My guess is we might not end up using average swing speed that much either because a percent of hard swings. And right now the 5 guys I have were perfect 100% over 85 are still Julio at least Robert frontal Reyes Machado and Mike Trout. That's a pretty solid top 5, I think. Yeah. So you got into swing path and swing shape a little bit in your piece too. And again, I guess there's gonna be some correlation here probably with launching coal, but maybe not completely just because part of it is going to be the height of the hitter I imagine as well, but you looked at swing flatness and upper cut Ness. So how much of a variation is there among hitters and I guess I'd also be interested, I don't know whether it's possible to answer this yet, but it would be interesting to see the just variation from swing to swing within the same hitter. Do you use an uppercut swing when you're going down to get a ball or you're facing this picture and then you use more of a flat swing on other types of pitches or maybe it depends on what pitch type you're predicting, that would be kind of cool to look into eventually, but what showed up as far as who's the flattest who's the least flat that kind of thing? Yeah, that was pretty fun to look at. I don't think I necessarily broke any barriers in the sense of if you swing up, you'll probably hit the ball harder and then more likely to miss more or if you have a flat swing, you'll have a higher babbit, but less power, but I mean, these are the kind of things that I think are intuitive to the eye test, but now you can actually put some numbers too, which is cool. So like you said, I broke it into four different groups, you know, 25% of the swings and the guys who have the uppercut swings. I mean, it's pretty clearly that the barrel rate is like through the roof and the guys who don't, you know, have good batting averages, but don't have any power. So I have the list updated through yesterday, actually. And at the time, Stephen Quan had the flattest swing, which sure. At the moment, Connor Joe does, which I think still makes a certain amount of sense. My favorite at the top, it was Altuve. And now it is Matt Carpenter. And man, does that make a lot of sense? Because look what he's doing. This is another example. I wish we had historical data. I wish I knew what he was doing with the Cardinals because I bet it's not what he's doing now. Yeah. I think that we should just take a moment, you know, because it's never a bad idea to appreciate what Matt Carpenter's season line is right now because it remains hilarious. Three O 9 four 27 7 94 is a two 35 WRC plus. Like, this guy, this guy's has 30 hits and 14 of them are home runs. This is my favorite this was just my favorite thing, sorry. It's not really the point, but it is a point that we could make here, so. And he was just out there pretty much anyone probably could have had him for the right deal. Of course, the Yankees. Got a cool, yeah. Of course.

"At 15 and 45 powered by maximus. Moving people and technology forward. Four 45, what is up, rob woodfork? Here's what's up. Unfortunately, it was a baseball into the stands over at Nats park. The Nats won out from stealing a win to avoid a sweep of the hands of the Marlins, but just moments ago, Jesus Sanchez with a no doubt two run Homer in the top of the 9th, it puts Miami back in front four to three, the Nats were actually in a two zero hole. They were getting no hit until they put together a two run 7th inning, Josh bell was the one who broke it up, and then he would be the one to hit the home run in the 8th inning to give the natsir first lead, but Tanner Rainey served one. He actually walked one then served up the go ahead home run to get at the moment the blown save the nationals looked at either tied this thing up or get the walk off here in the bottom of the 9th inning. The Orioles, meanwhile, they are in Minnesota, leading the twins rather three to one top of the 9th inning as all of their scoring coming via the solo home run. The mystics without Elena delle donne led by as many as 17 in Connecticut only to fallen overtime 74 72 to open a four game road trip. "Exactly, right? Yeah. And we're people in podcast guests like Fernando Paris, who still extremely fun to talk to you. Sorry about my intro, you are immersed in baseball culture again, but it has not rubbed you of any of your personality fortunately. Maybe it's because the giant not your typical baseball culture. At least traditionally. So just a joy to have you on again and hopefully we can do it again, not years later. I hope so too, it is always very fun chatting. It's very nice to meet you, Meg. Nice to meet you too. All right, I forgot to give you today's past blast earlier in the episode, so before I clock out for the week, let me give you that in a few follow-ups. As always, this comes from Richard hershberger, saber historian, author, researcher, writer of strike for the evolution of baseball, a book that I hope some of you will be picking up. This is episode 1864, so today's past blast, of course, is from 1864, and this is a brief excerpt from the Brooklyn eagle on June 16th, 1864. It says Eureka versus empire clubs, Miller was its second and Benson at first, when jewett hit a high ball which burrows the Eureka pitcher could easily have held on the fly. Had he done so, however, only one player would have been put out. Therefore, for strategical reasons, he muffed it and picking the ball up quickly through it to third base, and it being forwarded rapidly to second, both the men that were forced to run to those bases were put out. You've probably picked up on which scenario this is describing Richard Wright's. This is the infield fly play. My name for the play that the modern infield fly rule abolishes under the modern rule, the umpire would have called this an infield fly, putting the batter out automatically, and the runners would have remained safely at their bases. This rule was not yet imagined. Burrows by intentionally muffing the ball forces the runners off their bases, but with such a late start that he is able to turn a double play. This was not a trick play, plays such as the hidden ball trick, rely on the runner not paying attention. This is not the issue with the infield fly play, the runners have no way of knowing ahead of time whether the Fielder will catch or drop the ball, so they don't know whether to run or stay at their bases. This was a difficult play for the Fielder. It was easy to misplay, resulting in no apps at all. So it was admitted as skillful play when executed successfully. As a final note, he says everything you think you know about the reasons for the infield fly rule is wrong. This is too big a subject for one minute, but he sends me a link to a deep dive he did for saber on the origin of the infield fly rule, which I will link on the show page. It appears to have been legal during a period from about 1859 when tagging up became a thing to maybe the mid 1870s or so, but it's hard to pin down Richard told me the language of momentarily held is not the most transparent. This is why it is misunderstood today. You wouldn't pick up the intent from reading the rules. I figured it out by doing my research the hard way, sifting through reporting for interesting discussions. It wasn't a whole lot more transparent at the time. Nick young in later years in his capacity as NL secretary and later president would put out bulletins in the spring with official interpretations of various rules, this one featured pretty frequently. This is a dead giveaway that it wasn't being enforced consistently. The modern language was implemented in 1895, I think. It also is not a triumph of clarity, but it was good enough that people, especially umpires, figured it out, and going earlier, Nick young as an umpire called it in 1872. There is a lot of consensus building and how the game is played that this not always show up in the rules right away or even ever, Richard also adds that he believes the infield flight called in the 2012 NLCS was absolutely correct. Okay, as promised a few follow-ups, we talked recently about the play that the Cardinals pulled off where Nolan Gorman just ran right through second with the bases loaded instead of sliding in, so that he would not break his momentum there. He would be safe at second and the runner who was on third could score, and we thought this is smart. Why doesn't everyone do it? Well, there is one reason which Connor pointed out to us the big concern about running through second is if the field are going to the bag steps through the bag and there's a huge collision. The cards did it against the cubs a couple weeks ago and the runner very nearly ran over Nick madrigal. The short stopper second basement continuing through the bag when catching the ball is fairly common, and you're only doing this on a bang bang play, therefore increasing the likelihood of a collision. All it takes is one big collision before you have an issue. Could point Connor enjoyed that play, hope to see it more, but also would prefer for runners and infielders not to injure each other. Now, most of you probably heard that on Wednesday, the Astros pulled off two immaculate innings in the same game against the same three batters, very fun fact, Luis Garcia had the first immaculate ending, that's three strikeouts on 9 pitches, film Eton had the second, and better yet they did it against the same three batters, each of them, Nathaniel Lowe, Ezekiel Doran, and Brad Miller, and his Sarah langs tweeted this is the first time on record there have been two macula innings on a single calendar date, let alone in the same game or by the same team. So that's pretty amazing, but Patreon supporter Jeffrey asks a different question, he noted I just watched Luis Garcia pitch an immaculate inning and then strike out the first batter in the next inning on three pitches as well. Unfortunately, he then struck out the following batter on 5 pitches, what's the record for number of consecutive strikeouts on three pitches recorded by one pitcher, so he had an immaculate inning and a third essentially. And that actually is the record within one game dating back to 1988, which is when pitch by pitch data started, Garcia was the 7th to have four consecutive three pitch strikeouts in a single game after Andy ashby in 1991 Jesus Sanchez in 1998, Matt Clement 2003, Francis galiano, 2012, Craig kimbrell, 2017, and kenta maeda, 2018. However, the record holder, if we count multiple outings, appears to be Tony Watson on April 2nd and 6th of 2014 and all star season for him, he had 5 consecutive strikeouts strung across those two games on three pitches each. Thank you to Lucas apostolis of baseball prospectus for looking that one up and you can check out a blog from Ben Clemens at fangraphs for more on three pitch strikeouts that will be linked on the show page. Listener Peter said, last week I watched the Red Sox at angels game on June 9th. I thought the bottom of the third was interesting, Nick pavetta was pitching, he struck out Otani and then struck at Stassi, the third batter was well she did not strike out but hit a soft grounder toward first, pavetta was coming off the mound in that direction and made a one unassisted put out at first. I was excited because I was under the impression that this is all happened in 9 pitches, three per batter, so my first thought was that this should qualify as some kind of special version of an immaculate inning since the pitcher threw 9 pitches and made three outs without any assistance from a Fielder. I went back to watch it again, it turned out I had missed a ball making it a ten pitch inning still. I wonder how you feel about it, suppose it was a 9 pitch inning. Do you feel such an inning should count as an immaculate inning because the pitcher did it himself? Strikeouts and unassisted put out is that immaculate because he didn't really rely on the defense behind him. Good question, but I would say no. I think an immaculate editing is specifically about three strikeouts on 9 pitches. It's not just about doing it yourself or you could have a much shorter in where you had a bunch of unassisted put outs or whatever..

"About Jake de Grom. Absolutely, you know, I mean, it was really exciting to be there. I will say that and my best friend is a rapid fan at this point and she was having so much fun and you just see there's a lot of positive coming out of queens right now. All right, let's play the numbers game. Number three. Number three is two. So speaking of those mats, Nick plummer hit that dramatic home run on Sunday baseball. Awful chorus to tie the game in the 9th inning and then he hit another home run on Monday. So he is the first met ever to Homer in each of his first two career starts. And I thought that Sunday home run was pretty fun. So the game tying home run in the 9th inning for his first career home run. The last met to the game tying home run for his first career home run, the 9th or later was lasting in the bottom of the tenth off Armando Benitez on June 4th 2006. He very infamously high 5 the fan down the line. I was actually at that game with my mom so that was a fun little throwback. Number two number two is 496. So Jesus Sanchez hit a monster home run yesterday. Yeah, so was it Coors field, but if you were to get four 96, I don't care where it is. We're going to pay attention. So that was the second longest home run stack SS track at Coors field. And of course, the longest was also a Marlin. It was John Carlos Stanton in 2016, 504 feet. Number one number one is 12. So move key Beth has 12 home runs in May. He is right there in the MVP conversation after it kind of slow first ten 15 games totally in the past at this point. So there are only four Dodgers have more home runs in a month and of course move as a chance to get up there with them today one more day left in May. Pedro Guerrero in June 1985 hit 15 home runs. Duke Snyder in August of 1953 also hit 15. Cody ballinger back in June 2017 hit 13 and Adrian Beltran in August of 2004 also hit 13. So Sarah, I got to ask the question, get up yesterday by Hannah storm about whether or not we should just, you know, if we feel like the Dodgers are so good that we should basically look them as being the prohibitive favorite to win the World Series. And I said, no, I feel like the last 5 years they've been on paper the best team. And they've won the World Series once, and we saw 2019. The Washington Nationals, I felt like in that moment, they were actually a better team than the Dodgers with how they're playing. And then there's no question that last fall that the Atlanta Braves got hot. They had made all those trades. They were better team than the Dodgers when they beat them in the postseason. So I was like, no, I'm not buying that. What about you? Yeah, I totally agree. I mean, if we were gonna give it to the team that seen the best in the regular season, as you're saying each of the last 5 years, if not more, it probably would have been the Dodgers. And I feel like we have this conversation every year on opening day too. Hey, on paper, this is the best team let's see if they can do it. But the Padres have been really good this year. We just talked about the math. We even talked about the American League with the Yankees and even teams like the twins. I mean, who knows what kind of run they could go on with the fact the white socks aren't doing well on that central. So I don't think we can give it to them, but I hope they put up a great fight in the playoffs. Yeah, and I'd say in the postseason one thing to watch for the efficiency of their defense. I think that every team has its potentially under soft part of the underlying belly, the exposed part. And for me, it's the Dodgers infield defense. I think that that's going to be interesting to watch in close games. All right, Sarah, thanks for doing this. Great to see you. Thanks so much for having me. Bleacher.

"Had not noticed that, but in fact, that is true. The marwan's have Jesus Aguilar. They have Jesus Sanchez. They have Jesus. How sacrilegious if I refer to them as the holy Trinity. I don't know. I guess I just did it. But I like that they have collected all the Jesus's and frequent stat blast consultant Ryan Nelson. Look this up and found that it has happened three times previously, that a team had three people with the same first name and had all of those players who were in the league at that time with that name. And I guess this is just matching exact first names, not looking for variants. But in 1908, the reds had all the dicks. The reds had all three dicks in the league. They have all the Richards? Maybe not, I don't know, but they had dick hope witzel, dick Bayless and dick Egan in 1936. The reds again had all the leaves. Lee handley, Lee Stein and Lee Grissom, and in 1967, the pirates had all the manies, many Mota, many sanguine, and many Jimenez. No team has had more than three, a 169 teams have had the only pair of players with the same name. There have also been many thousands of times that a player has been the only active player with his name in a given year. So this could change, obviously, if there were to be another Jesus in the majors at some point this season, who is not on the morrowinds, the marylands have a low a 17 year old player named Jesus, but I don't think he's going to get there in time to form a Quartet of Jesus. But you could have another recent Jesus, maybe Jesus Cruz or Jesus or Jesus Sucre or one of the other Jesus. We have seen could come back and be promoted to the majors, but I am rooting for the Marlins to acquire a fourth Jesus and just break the record. So if there's a possibility to add another Jesus to the rest of the season, I think Kim should pursue that option. I think that that is true and also it makes me want angels to pursue actual angel names in the Bible because then we can make angels in the outfield jokes. I don't think that I don't know. I don't know about religion, Ben. So I don't know if you've offended people. I don't know you didn't mean to. I mean, the ones that are into Jesus probably are fine with that. I don't know, man. Yeah, all right. And then we got a question from Simon E, who basically just sent us a tweet from Kurt hogg, who is a brewer's beat reporter for the Milwaukee journal sentinel, and he tweeted the brewers outfielders did not record a single out tonight. Someone smart figure out the last time that happened in a game. So someone smart is Ryan Nelson and also Jeremy Frank at MLP random stats who tweeted about this as well. But this was a classic case of, I'm not sure if this is weird or not for no outfielders to record an out in a given game for a team. It turns out it's actually not really that weird or that unusual. It happened a 164 times this century, Ryan estimates it's probably happened about 500 times at least. It's a tough to tell with earlier years with the scoring that was available then, but the brewers themselves did it. On September 8th, 2021. So it's not that rare Jeremy tweeted that it had actually happened a few days earlier, the Mariners did it on Sunday this past Sunday, so it happens like 5 to 15 times per year now where no outfielder on the team records a put out or an assist. And I think these days we have more fly balls as a percentage of all batted balls, but we also have fewer batted balls. So I think it has become more common in this high strikeout era for this not to happen. So that did sort of surprise me, but that's why we do the stop bless. Sometimes the null hypothesis it turns out to be not all that interesting, but that is important to point out as well. Yeah. And then lastly, we got a question right after opening day from Scott, who said the mets broadcast tonight noted that nationals third baseman Michael Franco had a special game with 5 unassisted putouts at third base over the course of the game. Keith Hernandez even went so far as to say he had never seen that in a baseball game. In the spirit of the recent true ghost player and plays in a row stat blasts, is this truly as special for a Fielder as the broadcast believed, what position has the most unassisted put outs in a game or the least other than presumably pitcher catcher and maybe shortstop. So again, Ryan Nelson did his magic here with his retro sheet database and I will read his response here. So the record for most unassisted outs in a game and this is not counting strikeouts for catchers because catchers get credited with put outs on strikeouts, but it is counting other types of put outs for catchers. But still is 13. The record is 13 by rolando rooms of the 1989 Cincinnati reds, who set the record playing right field against the braves on July 28th, part of the reason, though, that this is a record is that this was a 17 inning game. So he had many opportunities to get his 13 unassisted outs. The highest number of unassisted outs in a 9 inning game is 12, helped by two players Lyman bostock playing center field for the twins against the Red Sox on May 25th, 1977, and Jacobi elsberry playing center for yields for the Red Sox against the Blue Jays on May 20th, 2009. The record for non outfielders is 9, accomplished by ten first basemen and one second baseman that was Tony bernazard on April 27th, 1984 for Cleveland against the tigers, but that game went to extras that was an 18 inning game pre zombie runner. Many first basemen got 9 and 9 innings. So the record for a non outfielder and non first baseman in 9 innings or fewer is 8, which has been done three times by three different players at three different positions. Or second baseman rich dower on June 29th, 1979 against Dave Steve in the Blue Jays. He caught two fight balls in the third, one in the fourth, one in the 5th had all three outs on assisted in the 6th and one more fly out in the 7th. Plus two assisted put outs and four assists, meaning he had a hand in 14 of the Orioles 27 outs, cubs shortstop, Charlie hollick, on July 7th, 1922, he also had 8 and Washington senators catcher muddy rule or ruell on September 27th, 1928 against the browns. He caught a pop fly in the first of foul pop fly in the second two foul plot flies in the third, another foul pop fly in the fourth, a pop flight in the 5th, a foul pup play in the 8th, and yet another foul pop fly in the 9th, which is weird. He also had four strikeouts, so 12 total put outs. That's a lot of pop flies in a single game..

"There are all these bones and kingery is in moniac hanging around here who like, if one of them could click, that would really help quite a lot. And I know people are maybe excited about Mickey moniak, spring. He has a 1285 OPS in spring training, which is fun, although I will note that he also had 1000 plus OPS in spring trading in each of the past two years in fewer at bats, but that's something that has happened. So rookies, I mean, we mentioned start rate and is not veering rookie eligible. I don't remember how Ricky eligibility works. But he's around as well. Hey Matt feeling is ruche eligible. You like either of them or anyone else? Yeah, I mean, I think it having just mentioned bomb like it was interesting that that was a bit of a positional battle, but I think as Meg said, I think it's pretty likely we see get some time at short and yeah, it's exciting that he will be on the roster for opening day and I think that one should be went to watch out for. All right, well that's the Phillies. There's definitely a lot of reasons to watch this team. It should be frustrating at times and fun at other times. So I'm definitely looking forward to this Philly season. It will be unlike any other season that we will see this year, I think. So that brings us to the Marlins. They were also active. There are a lot of active teams in this division this winter. Do you have a favorite or best Marlins move? So looking like big picture long-term, I think it's hard not to pick extending a sandy Alcantara because that's I think a really good step toward blocking down this young rotation core, which is very exciting and fun to watch. But I also really liked picking up Jacob stallings at catcher to talking about how good this rotation can be in, especially a young rotation, having him there to manage his staff, I think, is really exciting. And so that one, I think, might be my favorite. Yeah, that's a good pick. By the way, I should mention that the Phillies have kind of overhauled their player development department. So maybe things will get better there as Nebraska said, we need to be better at getting players over the hump and producing good players from within the system. I agree, Dave, the Philly's definitely need to be better at that. All right, back to the so the strength, I guess the strength is probably what we've always talked about with the steam right the young pitcher. Oh, yeah. Yeah. I mean, it's hard not to, yeah. Yeah. There's a lot of it. It's fun. I mean, there are pictures on the staff who have already been great. Like, I'll counter and Rogers. I mean, people have projected our counter to make even greater strides I've seen according to stat cast. I noticed this because my colleague Zach kram pointed it out the other day. But Alcantara had the worst framing support of any pitcher. He had the most runs last two framing according to baseball savant last season. So with Stalin's hopefully that will not be the case, even though maybe stylings is a more elite blocker than a framer, hopefully that'll get a little bit better for him. But Trevor Rogers has already really good bubble Lopez. Eleazar Hernandez, they're so many guys here. Jesus, I guess the question. I don't know whether we're stepping on any breakout picks or anything here, but that's definitely one of the storylines of the season. How much will you get out of him? Yeah. And obviously 6 do Sanchez who does not seem to be close to returning from his shoulder surgery. So I just, I have no idea what to expect out of him if anything or when, but there are so many good pictures here that they've already traded a little bit from that depth, but they could continue to if they want to supplement the lineup still. Yeah. Yeah, I can't wait to see what this player does group can do with lizard, which isn't to say that like, you know, Oakland's not like bad at that, but I think that there's just the opportunity here for him to take a step forward with the combination of what they're up to and good health and yeah, and if 6 or 6 inches can ever figure out a better fastball shape like look at. Weakness? I appreciate that they try to fix the lineup some Jorge soler. They tried. You can't say they didn't do anything. They did that do enough for dirt cheaters taste seemingly. Yeah, weird. Because what we're saying, this rotation could be so, so, so good. And it's like if you could just do a little more here to give me confidence that you could at least consistently be a average ish offense. I would feel so excited to watch this you and instead you haven't quite done that. I think it admirable job of trying with what seemed like it was not very much to work with. Financially, but yeah. Yeah. Garcia, obviously Garcia is a good player in Jorge soler. I have no idea whether he's like the very not good player or the very good player who he was like within last season. I don't know exactly what to make of him and Stalin's obviously helps you a lot. Defensively at the very least. So it is an improvement, but yeah, they were linked to Castellanos and Marte, who, of course, was a Marlin in the not too distant past. And someone like that, I mean, yeah, it seems like they could use a real Big Bopper, but I believe in aspects of the lineup, I guess. Is there a breakout pick either on the offensive side or just yet another pitcher who could take a step forward for you? I think luzardo is such a good pick because I really do think that, you know, working with this staff, I would be really excited to see what we get from him if he can kind of fit in with the rest of this rotation. But other than that, you know, this steps on a rookie, but I'm talking about this lineup and what we might see. Can you curious to see what Jesus Sanchez does in the outfield? He does have some power that is other always missing from this lineup and I would like to see maybe we can get something from him there. But yeah, breakout wise, you know, I feel like it's hard because pitching staff is already so good other than luzardo that you can't really point to much there. And then the lineup is what we've discussed it is. So is it too late to predict well, I don't know if I'm predicting, but to hope for a jazz Chisholm break out sort of for him to elevate past what he did last year, which wasn't bad, but was not like, you know, he was a below league average header and the defense was only so, so. So maybe we could give some hope to just hold my suppose? Yeah, I think so. He's one of those players who in my head because he is so much fun to watch even if he hasn't like fully put it together that he has already transcended it in my head. Even though you're right, he was not a leak average hitter, even though he felt like one to me. Right. But very much felt like one. And so that's a great point. This close. Yeah, it was close. But not quite there. Yeah, no. His highlights are as exciting as anyone. And I guess it sounds like a cliche, but consistency that's kind of important for him, but also plate discipline and strikeout to walk ratio. He struck out close to 30% of the time last year and walked less than 7% of the time. So that's an issue, but he does have speed and power and it definitely wouldn't surprise me to see him make a step forward. He's only 24, so yeah, I could see it. And I'm with you on Sanchez as well. I could see him having a 30 Homer season. He hit 14 and 251 plate appearances last year. So clearly has a lot of power. So yeah, there's that..

Covid coordinator Jeff Zions told reporters that have fallen short of the July 4th goal should not undermine the enormous progress that has been made over the past few months. We set 70% of adults as our aspirational target. And we have met or exceeded it for most of the adult population. This is a remarkable achievement. Remarkable achievement. We haven't at the goal, though. I thought we're at 65% Sciences 70% of U. S adults. 30 and above have received at least one vaccination shot. Well, that doesn't mean they've been fully vaccinated now, does it? See, we changed. We change everything as we go along. Just make it easier to make it seem Like we're doing the job. We're supposed to be doing just crazy. They're not including those 30 and under people who have been slow to actually go out and get vaccines as well. Right now, I've got three daughters under the age of, uh 24. All three have been vaccinated fully. And they had they were they were dying to get it done. You know, they had no qualms about getting it done. So I think wondered at school one in Philadelphia, where me is working in one here once you kill me, Katie when she came back home So, um Because it was at that time because Katie left school very well. Syracuse. What they did was to get rid of the spring break and they let them out earlier and they were She was home. I want to say in April early April, Wow, that is early. So you know, I was at the time when when there wasn't enough vaccine around, and so she came home and got it done here. Well, Yeah, I mean, because it was smart. They they decided that they didn't want to have this. Going further deeper into the summer when they were worried that it may you know, we may have more problems with Covid 19 remember. It was one of the one of the thoughts. Yeah, it makes so that They moved up their their start date. And they, uh They got rid of their spring break. So you know those my daughters Twins, one at Northeastern in Boston, one at Syracuse. We'll have really their first. More normal look of college life this year. Eva, for example, in Boston at Northeastern and live in a hotel. Because She was supposed to begin it. I think her first semester in London. In this program she's in and they canceled all foreign travel. So they had no more room to put the kids in, so she had to stay in a hotel for a year. Well 1st 1st term. And you don't get the experience of what really caused life that like so Hopefully they'll they'll enjoy it, both of them and it will be different, different, but hopefully they'll enjoy it.
