"Continues to offer direction and retreats for the sisters of the missionaries of charity. Monsignor Asif encountered saint padre pio, who would become a spiritual father to him. He has lived in areas around the world, serving in the pontifical missions, a Catholic organization established by Pope St. John Paul the second to bring the good news to the world, especially to the poor. He continues to serve as a retreat leader and director to bishops, priests, and sisters, seminarians, and other religious leaders. Building a kingdom of love, reflections with Monsignor John essef, I'm your host, Chris McGregor. What's in your heart today? It's Jesus Jesus, the king of kings. The lord. His title, the kingship of Jesus Christ. You know, when you think of a king and you think of a conqueror, how the power of Jesus is really summed up in the sacred heart. His love is his power. Jesus the king. Overcoming the three major enemies of love. One is sin. Jesus conquered sin in a gospel of today. It refers directly to him as king, and when he celebrates that kingship, it was on the cross in the gospel of Luke in the 23rd chapter, beginning with the 35th verse, these events are taking place while he's raining on his throne. What is the throne of Jesus Christ? The cross. What is The Crown he's wearing? Thorns. What is the sign above him? Look at your crucifix. I in RI. Jesus, Nazareth, Rex city worm. That's in Latin. Jesus of Nazareth, king of the Jews, and so here is the reading for today's mass. The rulers sneered at Jesus and said, he saved others, let him save himself. If he is the chosen one, the Christ of God, Christ means the anointed one, Christ in the line of David is christos, is one who is anointed king. He saved others, let him save himself. The rule is sneered at Jesus and said he saved others, let him save himself if he is the chosen one. The Christ of God. Even the soldiers jeered at him. As they approached to offer him wine, they called out if you are king of the Jews, save yourself. Above him, these words were inscribed. This is the king of the Jews. Now one of the criminals hanging there reviled Jesus, saying, are you not the Christ? Save yourself and save us. The other, however, rebuked him, fear of God for you are subject to the same condemnation. And indeed we have been condemned justly. Here is a sinner. His sin

"Know? Are you deep? About what? About Jesus. Nazareth. And then what does he do? He sits down and gives him the Bible study of all Bible studies. When our friends get to this one, chapter 24, this is it. This is the CD set. I wish I had. Because he goes into the Old Testament and he explains throughout the entire Old Testament. He explains why the messiah, the son of man, had to suffer. I think that's interesting. You know, of all the themes that he would spend that entire day teaching on, he teaches on, suffering, which I think goes back to, Luke 9, the cost of discipleship. Anyway, he goes, I'm not going to tell you the end of the story I'll support you. You don't want to spoil it. But he has a meal with him in the breaking of the bread. Which is the same really as the liturgy of the eucharist, their eyes are open. And they see him, and that is such a beautiful message for us today in that in the eucharist, just like in Luke 24. You want your eyes opened? Go to mass. You know, you want to see life the way it really is. Go to mass. You want to know the truth. Go to mass. It'll transform you like it did this couple that was walking. And then they returned to Jerusalem. You know? So everybody that's listening right now and you are walking away, I would encourage you to go back and meet Jesus in the eucharist. Yes, it's just so we every summer we have every third summer. We put on a camp for junior high students and every third summer, we just walk through Luke 24 and the whole week is this journey with Clio and we call her misses cleopas because maybe you know, there was Mary the wife of clopas.

"Is it weird that I think that's weird? No. No, I think it's a completely reasonable response. That are a guy sitting in Portland. Who grew up in the northwest, should think it's odd. I've shared the sentiment before. You have. And it's just yeah. I don't know. Yeah. I mean, I get the sense that and actually have people, I know, have shared this with you, that you saying that out loud, I know, gives many people permission to be honest. Yeah. That they find these parts of the Bible difficult. Well, it's like, look, okay. Following a guy that you believe rose from the dead. It's already a little bit outside the norm. Whatever the norm. Whatever the norm is. I mean, we live in a world that's stranger than Oz, you know? That's true. We're on a flying space rock. And there's dark energy that is pushing the universe into a fact of our existence in this moment is beyond our wildest imagination. So to find normal. Yeah. Yeah, the universe is expanding into nothingness. But you and I both. And most of y'all who are listening have been compelled by the life, story of Jesus Nazareth, and part of being his apprentice or disciple means believing he is who he says he is, who is the raised from the dead, lord of the cosmos, over heaven and earth. And so you get to that point. Yeah. And then many people have had really beautiful experiences I have. Of encountering him. But then you get to this other piece, which is, well, he's finds his identity not just in his relationship with the father, but in relationship to this book. Yeah. Or a people group whose story is informed by this book, and whose story formed this book. Yeah. Sure. And yeah, Jesus said that these texts are unified in a really important way. And there he actually, that's nothing new. That's what most I can tell you is thought about this collection of scrolls, is that they were unified and pointing in it forward direction. But he claimed that his life story was uniquely bringing what the collection was all about to a next stage of the story and for what he called fulfillment. So I'm in on this because I believe in the power of the resurrection of Jesus. Yeah. And I believe in self sacrificial love. And in heaven and earth uniting. And then this leads me to then

"Is column by ziv or ziv barashi, you can find ziv in all the usual places. And now it's time for what a country segment. This is the part of the show in which each of us describes something that might have surprised or amused delighted or enchanted in source older maybe even fluked us as we went there our way through our world over the last little while Don, what is your better country? Well, delayed for a week by Israel's worst winter storm of 2021 and threatened by omicron, 16 members of Mayan Intrepid staff at the Israel center for educational innovation. Ventured forth a day before New Year's Eve, to Nazareth at the invitation of Sally awara S four and rawya bulus, the heads of our Arab schools initiative, who wanted us to experience their hometown during Christmas time. Quixotically, perhaps, as an aside, living in Israel has allowed me to enjoy Christmas more fully than when I grew up, my cultural confidence as an Israeli slash American Jew in a majority culture has erased feelings of being overwhelmed by a cultural tidal wave that did not belong to me, so it was with zero ambivalence that we took selfies in front of Mary's well. Mary is called Miriam in Hebrew, which always confuses me, which is next to a grand lush, dark green fica street, and later at the giant Nazareth Christmas tree, a perfectly conical artwork, not quite on the scale of Rockefeller center, but already iconic after ten years with jingle bell rock and Rudolph the ResNet is reindeer, blasting through speakers in a surreal way, alternating with Christmas songs in Arabic, which of course have an entirely different rhythm. The crowds were nowhere to be seen since we arrived after the Catholic Christmas, but before the Greek Orthodox Christmas, which starts tonight, following the Julian calendar rather than the Gregorian calendar. So we miss the anticipated Christmas hubba, but given omikron, I was relieved to be putting my team at less risk. Nazareth is a city of rare beauty and complicated politics and still today is revealing its secrets. Just 20 years ago, excavations in an ancient church found three secret tunnels used by Christians to flee from persecution by Roman soldiers. As the birthplace of Jesus Nazareth has unparalleled historical significance to Christians, of course, yet the majority of the population today is Muslim. Strangled by Israel's building restrictions, hundreds of young Christian families have decamped to the formerly all Jewish town next door. Galilee view, or, as it was known until a few years ago, upper Nazareth, creating a new set of sociopolitical challenges, and perhaps some opportunities. But as we strolled through the traditional Nazareth market, Sally told us longingly and lovingly, how she haunted the shops as a young girl, gathering fabrics to bring her mother a seamstress in the family garment business. We stopped at the 107 year old cafe Abu Salem, a backgammon club whose young proprietor George Abu Salem served us inar a restorative beverage and Christmas time favorite made from cinnamon and walnuts. Now he's the third George to run the club he told us. But the first to upend tradition by allowing women and children inside. We also stopped at the below ground Galilee Babu spice up babur as our wonderful guide with the mellifluous Greek Arab moniker of sufjan Abu Hana told us is the Arabic pronunciation of the word vapor, of which the ship was richly endowed. He also told us only a 110 out of the 420 shops in the market are still in operation. Some killed off by a mismanaged renovation in anticipation of the visit of John Paul the second two decades ago, the rest by the proliferation of malls. But I was astonished to see how many of the remaining venues are devoted to culture to literary clubs to poetry nights and jazz performances with boutique hotels springing up everywhere. There are two churches which commemorate the annunciation in Nazareth, the appearance to marry of the angel Gabriel, who informed her of the immaculate conception that she was or would be soon carrying the son of God. The Greek Orthodox church is a modest affair built around a spring where their tradition says Mary was drawing water when the angel appeared to her. The Catholic Church is gigantic, built at another site where their tradition claims the annunciation took place, but also at its heart is a modest sight of the divine encounter. In anticipation of the visit of Pope John Paul, the first in Nazareth in the 1960s, Sufi on informed his tongue in cheek, the Catholic Church of the annunciation was reconceived in the brutalist style into its current multi level magnificence by that famous church construction company solo Bonet, which of course is the hundred year old engineering firm of the histo root, brutalist he told us means that the church is made from dry concrete, not that it's brutal looking because of its massive block like design. He also explained that xmas is a misreading of the Greek letter he, which looks like an X but stands for christos, Christ, messiah. Enormous paintings and sculptures are donated by scores of Catholic communities around the world for this church of the annunciation, almost every one depicting Mary with baby Jesus either inside of her but visible or cradled in her arms, the figures often bearing the racial features of their countries of origin with cultural color schemes to match. These artworks give the church a museum feel, as they line the upper floors and continue along the exterior facade, a hundred variations on a single theme in an astonishing variety of artistic styles and media. Now this proliferation got me thinking about what it must have been like to visit a church before people were awash in our visual culture, with images flashing in front of our eyes at all times. Back then, those church paintings and icons were probably the only images churchgoers were going to see that week, or that year, or possibly in their lifetime, and all those images telling and retelling the same story must have implanted themselves in people's souls. And since both Judaism and Islam for bid religious iconography, the Christian world has had a almost two millennia had start in visual culture. Well, we ended our day with an extraordinary 7 course meal at an Arab owned kosher banquet hall in nofa galil. Another stop at the friendship sweet store where I bought a huge tray of baklava from my father in the last 85th birthday, the best he ever had, he told me. And stayed and we all stayed after sunset to see the Christmas magic lights of Nazareth, an outdoor drive-through installation of light sculptures, which charmed all of my minibus companions. Now, the magic lights are on top of mount precipice in Hebrew ha ha, the mount of the leap. What leaf are they talking about? According to the gospel of Luke, when Jesus tried to preach to the Jews of Nazareth, they not only rejected his message, but pushed him to the edge of a cliff, where Jesus either leaped to safety or magically made his way through the crowd, depending on which version you read. And that was the same cliff we were slowly driving across, admiring the flashing multi colored deers and stags and globes and patterns and stars emerging out of utter blackness. As I said, politics and religion are complicated or as simple as a light show on a mountaintop, happy and healthy, 2022. Yes, I want anyone think of Jesus. Well, anyone thinks of.

"Him here three parables about the kingdom. The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field which a man found in covered up then in his joy he goes and sells all that he has in buys that field again. The kingdom of heaven is like a merchant in search of fine pearls who on finding one pearl of great value went and sold all that he had and bought it again. The kingdom of heaven is like a net which was thrown into the sea gathered fish of every kind when it was full men druid ashore and sat down and sort of the good into vessels but threw away the bad so it will be at the close of the age. The angels will come out in separate the evil from the righteous and throw them into the furnace of fire where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth treasures new and old. Have you understood all this. They said to him yes and he said to them. Therefore every scribe who has been trained for the kingdom of heaven is like a householder who brings out of his treasure. What is new. And what is old the rejection of jesus nazareth. And when jesus had finished these parables he went away from there and coming to his own country. He taught them in their synagogue so that they were astonished and said where did this man get this wisdom these mighty works is not this. The carpenter's son is not his mother called mary and are not his brethren james and joseph and simon and judas and are not all his sisters with us. We're then did this man get all this and they took offence at him but jesus said to them he profit is not without honor except in his own country and in his own house and he did not do many mighty works there because of their unbe leaf the book of proverbs chapter nineteen versus five through eight. A false witness will not go unpunished. And he utters lies will not escape many seek the favour of generous man and everyone is a friend to a man who gives gifts all a poor man's brothers hate him. How much more do his friends go. Far from him. He pursued them with words but does not have them. He who gets wisdom loves himself and he who keeps understanding will prosper fire. We give you praise. thank you so much. Lord god i think for the teachings of jesus your son lord thank you. Thank you for your spirit that continues to inspire the readers and listeners.
