"It's like he's the best player in the team like they mean they might not need someone else. They need him. Well, they need Mookie Betts to be movie Bette. Yes, it was bad, But look at his numbers there pedestrian. They know you and I know that's not a big deal for long season. It's fine, but I think we underrated that This team is still gonna go wherever Mookie Betts takes them because he jumped into the story late. I think we missed that a bit. And I think to me it's very like Kevin Durant. It's going to be about it. Mookie Betts, not Mookie Betts. This team won't be this team on one more guy that I think deserves being thrown under the bus apologies in advance, but we're going to do just that. Or at least I am. The phrase can't miss. Is you way too often in a lot of sports and baseball Keefe among them, and that's what they said about Gavin Lux was he was coming through the Dodger system, and they were holding him back by not bringing him up. What's the matter? Well, he's here now, and he's not performing and I have not seen it on the major league level that this guy is even on above average player Yet it may kick in at some point, but Again paid me guilty if you must, because I believed everything I read and heard and blood had come to us for a static. Oh, this guy was going to step right in and upgrade their lineup. Hasn't happened. Why? Okay, Well, I agree with you, and you're right. I'm not gonna make excuses because you're right. But I'll play Devil's advocate in two fronts. One The guy was playing shortstop for a long time that in the minors and not playing that here is that a reason? No, But you know, they're not just young athletes for young people. So does the change of position and playing it. I have no idea. The other one I think is very realistic. And kind of makes sense, though not an excuse. There were no minor league last year, There was nowhere else to play your hand. The alternate site. What are you doing? Playing for a fortnight? We're hanging out with Jesus Luzardo, breaking his finger playing video games like there. There's nothing to do so when he doesn't make the roster after, Remember, he had a great year down the stretch 32 years ago, he ended up hitting a couple of big home runs. Nobody got him out in the minors. When he comes around last year, you don't make the team. There's nowhere to go like there's nowhere to play. I don't even know what he was doing. So it's almost like he kind of missed an entire season. I think it's fair did too, at least wonder if that may kind of hurt the timetable because you know as well as I do now, you're not getting consistent at bats, right? Which is hard for anybody. I mean, you're you're pressing all those things, but I don't even think. Forget about the 60 game season. He didn't even have a season. I do think that has to come into play somewhere. I'm with you, but I would reserve a little bit of waiting time because I have disjointed for him Specifically, last year was a team that I can actually say Two teams have been much better on what Ice project to despise. The American League in the nationally goes, I couldn't believe how many people just dismissed Oakland. At the started here and saying hello. They won that division going away last year. All right. Yet Simeon went elsewhere and Hendrix Society go to Chicago. But I like some of that good young arms, and I thought they'd be a little Philip Boyd on the pitching side and Elvis Andrus doesn't hit like Simeon, but I thought he was a nice acquisition. I thought Oakland would still be a major contender and activation and They're sitting on top of the division. Right now. The other team was Boston. You know, my dad and the retired for sure. It's not going to ball games, and it's eating him up in the light. And I had a conversation with him at the end of spring training. You know what? That I don't think the Red Sox are gonna be that bad this year, he said. Well, I don't know perform anymore because they're not sending me a check. I don't know what you're seeing, but I don't I said, Yeah, I think I am okay with the rotation. You know that. I've always liked a couple of their guys that would write and sue to get back out there. He'll be good. I actually think Barnes could do the job out of the pen. I never thought they'd be in first place five weeks in to be truthful. Yeah, I'd love to say I had him in first. No, I didn't. I just said they're not gonna be as bad as everybody thought. What's clicking for the Red Sox? What do they have gone, right? Why is it the first thing I will say is, you know I ducked for cover because this is not gonna be a very popular thought, but it's not take it just opinions. I mean, I've been friends with outscore for rendered. Look, we covered people in the game. He's a friend and I've known him a while and he did some bad things and all that stuff happened And you know whether owning it is enough or not. I think he probably has handled at the best also. He's really good at what he does. I mean, he's a really good communicator. He's very trusted beyond that, Jodi a lot of these guys when they see him. Nothing gets run. Run, Nicky. What did they remember? Oh, we were with the guy for two years. Yeah, The second was weird. Remember that other time 108 games so you want it means like they're It's like it's like these. The company blanket like to me. He brought Ability back the day he walked back there because he became a basis in a balance for everybody. Then there's all the other stories and to me at the forefront of that isn't water. Rodriguez, who I mean, we're just happy This guy's healthy enough to be here right on Earth. He's pitched like an All star. He's done a great job, and you know another thing I'll throw in. Even though everybody has B. J. D. Martinez. You cannot go ahead and be released by the Astros as a guy who was a highly touted dude. And go and have the fortitude to be humble down to the ground. Redo your swing, eventually build your career into that and then allow a 60 games. Cesena's A D A. For all the guys to do is walk up there and hit two, then ruin your confidence, like the idea that he was going to disappear. Jody, I never really understood that. Like this. Isn't that dude, He's been a big big part of this because when he's in the middle, Devers and Bogart's and those guys, they're not supporting cast there be a second tier. I mean, J. D. Martinez can carry it offense, and he's been doing a lot of that this year. No, you have a good relationship with the Red Sox manager. How about the Tigers manager? Is AJ hint saying to himself? No, wait a minute..

"Now to Rob would fork all right, Dick the nationals on a four game win streak that has taken them from worst to first in the N L East. Today, they rode the bat of Ryan Zimmerman and the golden right arm of Mac's shares or two or 31 victory over the Marlins. So they sweep that Syriza Nats Park and sure they're tossed nine strikeouts today. And what was his 12th career complete game. And if you think that's a full load, consider the fact that he immediately left the ballpark for daddy duty because his wife is in labor with their third child. John Jones is pretty impressed. He's been an amazing picture his whole career and it almost comes down to like some of these out his. You know, he finds these new motivations, obviously, from the broken nose. Thank you found a new motivation just came out and Del. And today after the game we talked a little bit is like, you know, having the baby tonight might as well It's like that, or fish like him in in the words of next. Yeah, well, Gomez batted like a grown man. He had game highs with two hits, and Zam had that 430 ft three run blast, And that goes down as his fourth of the season. So the Nets now even their record at 12 and 12, and again, they are in first place for the first time this season, the Orioles could not complete the sweep in Oakland, they lose to the A 75 on the late Ramon Laureano home run and speaking of the A's Get this dick they placed there. They advanced to the FCS semi finals against Sam Houston on Saturday and the Maryland Women's lacrosse team today falls in the Big 10 tournament. Final 17 12 the final score as Northwestern remains undefeated Rob would work w t O p Sports, You know, Rob, that reminds me of an old man story back in the day when I was a little boy. The Red Sox had a great right hand pitcher by the name of Jim Lonborg. And he broke a leg and people couldn't believe it that he did it while skiing and they thought, Whoa, That's what the guy does in his off time and the winters go skiing and break a leg and couldn't to show up in spring training. Yeah, but the thing is, video games are not a contact sport. That's not supposed to be so true. 7 47 We made Yusa insurance for members like Martin, a veteran made of conviction. "What Chris Davis could do when he's on, you know, and if that comes back, it's gonna be hard to see him hit 40 home runs for another team, and I think there's you know, certainly a possibility that that's what is gonna happen because You know, there doesn't seem to be any real reason that he had the fall off that he had beyond just something mechanical. He hadn't quite gotten worked out 100% yet as of last year, So you know, if he makes that come back, it will be a little bit hard to swallow on the flip side. Where he played and the fact that he was a right handed hitter, you know, was somewhat redundant with what they had already in the roster, and so if you were going to move somebody, he's somebody that you could replace with the guys you had internally Plus. Now you bring in a Morland. You know who gives them that power but from the left side So you know, from a baseball perspective, that's that's fairly easy to replace in terms of what their personnel was already set up as an Andrews even though he's not the Elvis Andrews, probably that he was five years ago is still an upgrade over what they would have had internally at shortstop. At this point, you know, within a gallon being a year so away from being able to be, you know, Major league ready, and Andrews is a guy who's gonna handle the defense. Well, especially with Chapman, able to, you know, bring in a little bit of rain. She's got the big arm. He could be the lead off hitter and give him a little bit of speed up at the top of that order, And he's also a very infectious personality, You know, really teammates just absolutely love him fans and loved them. So you know, I think he's somebody who, if you're going to take away a guy who was is important to that clubhouse is Chris Davis was bringing someone like Andrew's back in that deal was important because you're not kind of Saying that you're giving up that kind of presence in your clubhouse here, replacing it with a different kind, But he's still you know, a very well respected and sort of, you know, brings that kind of gravitas to AH Big League clubhouse that Davis does is well, it's all good point. And it's funny. If you look at the team. Now they've become AH War veteran presence team right with mentioning Elvis Andrus. A lot of these guys have been around now for a few years and Have had playoff experience and had some success in the playoffs. So all good stuff The one element of the team that I think is still sort of a question. Mark is his pitching staff. Right? AJ punk is supposed to be the big number one prospect and thean Juries last year. Sort of, I think, Derail some of that a little bit and 2020 think we don't just like to call it a wash. Sort of wiping away and not really remember it. But what is 2021 getting mean for AJ Park? And how is he heading into camp here in 2021? Yeah, I mean, I think until he ramps up to 100% game effort, we won't know because last year when things fell apart for him, it was because he got to that point where all of a sudden it was supposed to be in game and that's when the you know the shoulder really started barking on him, So he had a bullpen session yesterday, Melvin said that he looked really good, free and easy. Wasn't holding anything back or babying the shoulder. He spent all off season working with Jesus Luzardo down in Florida at Eric Kress is sports performance Jim or trainer Center. Whatever you wanna call it, and you know, Chris. He's got some of the best pitchers in baseball, You know, they're kind of peak performance, and so you know, if his body's and shape the amount of innings he's going to be able to throw on what role he's going to be in, you know, sort of you think remains to be seen. If he's healthy and in shape to give them even 60 innings. Those they're going to be 60 pretty high value innings. I think you know, it could be. One of those things were now that they have all this veteran presence in these extra bullpen guys. That they've just signed. They could start him. Maybe even in the minor leagues pitching. Maybe once a week is building up slowly and then towards the end of the season, when things really start to pick up. Maybe he has enough innings to kind of come in and help him get into a postseason And maybe even be a guy like a Julio areas was last year for the Dodgers and and kind of come out of nowhere and be 34 innings and key games throughout postseason and performances, So we'll see. I mean, he's got that kind of talent to be. That sort of X factor for them, But now they're not counting on him. And I think that's something that it's important when you're coming into a season like this one. Yeah, look like their roster was gonna look much differently. Two weeks ago, all of us said they look like they can still like, really be competitive in the ale West. So, Melissa, Thanks so much. We'll catch up with you when we get closer to opening day and check back in on the roster, But keep doing your thing. I'm sure there's gonna be able to free agent stuff coming up in the next week or so. Yeah, Keep hitting. Refresh on that page. All right. Thanks so much, Melissa. We'll catch you later. Thanks, Adam. I appreciate it. All right. Good. Hit there from Melissa Lockard of the athletic makes You check out her free agent tracker as free agents are still being signed, and like I said, I'd imagine that will continue into the next couple of weeks. They worked in to finish the season and because we've gotten to this point now we're in for an October like we've never seen before. Exciting stuff for baseball, having Teo.

Kevin Gausman against Jesus Luzardo at the Oakland Coliseum. Right here. 1 10. You can hear Dave Fleming. As well as John Miller. My next guess I can't talk about him enough. He's one of my good buddies. He has been on NBC, California since 2008 as a pre and post analysts. Let me bring in my buddy Mac Babbitt how you do it shooting Bea, Don't be. Don't be doing fantastic. How you doing today? Good to hear your voice, My friend. Glad you're safe and know well and I'm glad to hear you talking about the Oakland A's because they are a dynamic team this year. Right now. 32 19. They can't do too much bad. So tell me a little bit about your thoughts about thes Oakland A's Well, since we're in a condensed season, and it's pretty difficulty value way teams are players in such a short season. You know bill because most of the time it's alway a body of work. It's like a starting pitcher. Right now. You're just now getting loose and you're quick, just getting broken, typically in a normal season, But here you are, find yourself in postseason form and trying to find your way into the playoffs. But We're just like everybody else. We've been Balan conditions situations unfortunate for the injuries that we've had having crippled to the point where we can't compete at our ultimate level. I think what's been in advantages organization is that they have always prided themselves on having depth. Creating a competitive roster will with one guy gets hurt the next guy better be ready to play because he's going to get his opportunity. And we've been fortunate to have guys on that Ross and we've been fortune to acquire guys a plug holes in which we're leaking. So we have to feel really good where we are right now, considering the circumstances which everybody has had to endure. Ah, but, yeah, I mean, it's it's an exciting team is a group of kids who have been together for a significant amount of time. They've wanted to Marty League level together and they've come to the big league level. Same time, and they're having the same time a success. You're listening to shooting Babbitt here on KNBR. You can see him on NBC, California's a pre and post analyst, and Z Z top, made a song about shooting the well dressed man. And how I say that is this man has put suits together with combinations that dis explore the color combinations of the world. I just want to know one thing shooting. Who in the hell dresses you I guess you have to get a credit to my mom rest her soul from the first day she took me to church out was the most G kid and it was in my d n a. But ah, you know, Have some fun with it, Bill, But I just feel that there's no league big in the big leagues. You know all my life. I dreamed and prayed and hoped for an opportunity to get their fortune. My career wasn't as long as I had hoped for. But I know the time that I was there and how Right those lights over there and no matter what you're doing at the big league level of your ticket taker, If your person f l beverages, you're in the big leagues, and I think you have to represent it in that form. You know, to be on a camera being on the radio to be representing people, my people in my community of kids that I work with every day and communicate with them and tell them about how important it is. Carry themselves. First impressions go a long way. You know, I may have done my last pregame postgame for the season the other day, and I tried to make sure that I wear my best outfit because you just never know when the last time someone is going to see you. And I want always leap that lasting impression that You know the same type of presents that I bring. I want other kids to bring Same thing so, man, it's It's our honor to put my suit and tie on and to be in front of baseball fans and people who understand the game and enjoy the game. Well, outstanding. Right there. Well said shooting and you and I have been friends for over 20 years and I tell you what you're Dynamic personality, along with what you wear is spot on your A plus in my eyes, and you know that one of the things I want to ask you is an analyst. If you were going to analyze this Oakland A's team as you see it is that offense, is it starting pitching? Is it bullpen? What comes out at you first? It's a combination of all pitching and defense. Teaching the game. Timely hitting helps you win the game. We have six guys that have been legitimate starters. Even they all have different backgrounds. But they've been healthy. For the most part. The bullpen has been magnificent. This is a bullpen year starters. Yeah, I think you would be remiss of you. Try to hold them accountable to Guam. Pick six or seven is at this time of year when it's just not healthy, and it's something that they're not used to doing. So when you have so many guys that he used to come in in a shirt book, short burst gives me for one or two in his perhaps And you've got a staff full of those guys. You have to be the team that feel like you have an advantage and from one guy to the next we've got former closes down a pitching in the seventh, which are used to coming in high leverage situations that gives in to even be better in that time in the game, so just a combination of everybody and now you got to give credit to staff players as a whole because this is just not normal circumstances and I don't want to have anybody on the back for their accomplishments because it's something in the short term, but you definitely have to go. Tremendous about a credit have been able to do what they have done up to this point. You know, One of the things I hear on the post game shows is all these pictures, complimenting Sean Murphy, the catcher. He has done a dynamic job behind the plate. Last night. Bassett was saying, I never even shook off a pitch. That's how good I'm one on one with Murphy. Tell me your thoughts about Sean Murphy and how important it is not just the starting pitchers, but no one What that bullpens coming in. And what pitches air Good and bad. And what did they feature when they're coming right after guy well as Faras Murphy and what he brings to the club, I think continuity guys being together for a significant amount of time. Once you know what guys do have a heart. Rate beats how guys worked together how they play together how they move. I think that's how you become a winning team. I mentioned how these guys came up through the system altogether. Market taxis these pitches for the most part for the last three or four years. So the one thing I've been the most impressed about him. I can't recall one pitcher shaking him off yet..

How good did it feel in a short season, especially to beat a red hot Diamondbacks team? It felt good. You know, we went into their place and you know they took both those games. He works his butt off. He's prepared when he takes the mound and he is just a tough kid. You could see when he goes out there any pitches he goes after guys. All that type is just kind of fits the mold but yeah he's a great pitcher had a career and someone that you know it's an honor to be even compared. To what kind of things did you pick up from him. Did you kind of watch him pitch and maybe try to to learn a few things. Thanks you incorporate anything in particular yeah. I mean he was you know Kinda. Guy Who really back down wasn't afraid of justice fastball via great change and that's something that I kinda take pride him mm-hmm when you're young pitcher. Did you always have such good movement on your pitches. Did they kind of come naturally to you some of the stuff yet so when I was this young Kinda focused on like you know changing speeds and movement because I never really through hard until my senior year or junior senior year that I kinda got the video I grew a little bit but uh-huh before that was really kind of pitch ability and that's what I think has helped me throw my career. That may be Kinda made you a little bit more advanced for your age because you do seem like you you know the sort of game within the game the actual pitching and thinking ahead. It seems like you're somebody that has a real knack for that. I mean I've definitely picked up along the way talking a lot of the gossipers especially last year in Aaa I got hit around a little bit and then I pick some brands and that's you know every step uh-huh along the way I've been helped and I appreciate everyone told me to get to where I am. When did you start with a quick pitch because I know obviously that's something can thick a throw offer hitter's timing and puts it in the back of your head their head that that you've got that when did you start that mess around with a little bit last year in Stockton and then Dan kind of shut it down for months and then brought it back at the end of the year and then all this year I've been doing and it's it's been you know working for the most Barton. It's something something that kind of helps me getting a rhythm. What sort of reactions have you gotten from hitters especially when you very first started using it allows guys don't like it a lot of kind of ambush. I guess you could say but I mean you know anyway to get into. Your House is what I'll do. I liked the reactions from I sometimes have you shown Murphy says you've actually sort of almost clicked pitched him at times because you you just do it on your own right. Yeah I mean especially with Murph. I don't really like him no just because he he knows me and he kinda knows the situation sometimes just out of nowhere and I'll quit pitch him. happened to Houston the other day but yeah I mean he he's great within. He's been handling me real well. also I mean all the catches it after onto have have been really older. You are unique in that you that a couple of your pitches. You have different variations of them in your mind. How many pitches would you say are in your arsenal. When you you consider that you have like Sorta to curve balls and ETC Yummy. I'd say total with with everything have three within those three. I got about five years so I know you. Talk about your curveball. You've got the big breaking curveball and there's a another pitch. That's a little slurpy. Do you consider that a curveball because I get asked about that. One A lot young I considered the same bitch when we call it's the same pitch but sometimes depending on the situation nations scenario would I need is kind of can manipulate shape little bit but about some of your other pitches like would what would you say when you talk about your slider. How do you have variations of that. I actually just throw her call. So so it is not and there is no slider man even even your catcher sometimes call it a signer a lot of br even this year last year people will consider a slaughter over curve global. I mean I bo is called the a curved watch. This kind of shape is a little off the break.
