"Scene for five years. As he leaves the presidency. The Republican Party must adjust to the post Trump era here to talk about what it might look like is Keith Nothing? Keith is with silent majority strategies and is a columnist for the Hill. Please welcome back to American radio journal, Keith we are back in and unfortunately familiar situation where we have impeachment against the president moving through Congress. We've had the very unfortunate riots of a couple of weeks ago. All this leads to the question. Where does the Republican Party go to from here? So first of all, you're global thoughts on where the Republican Party stands amid all of this? Well, I think it this time. It's a bit of a low point, but I think that's relatively temporary. I mean, they think people get a little A little overboard on their political analysis. The impetus behind Trump and his supporters hasn't changed. In fact, that's reflected a lot of the electorate. There's still a lot of issue with income inequality and whether the advances in the in the growth of the economy in that success is being shared. Bye, everybody, which I think most people would agree. It has not. And there's a lot of dislike of political correctness and elite control and big text control over so much of the economy and so much of the messaging in this country that's not going away. It's just a matter of Of Republicans and even Democrats on the left of attempted to do this of Presenting some real alternatives and presenting good candidates that people can support. In terms of a legislative agenda. You touched on income inequality and, of course, trump populism, largely fueled by that it's an issue that the left has capitalized on more. What do Republicans need to do from a policy perspective, even though they are a minority now in Congress to try to recapture the high ground on that issue. I think you've got to look for ways Tonto spread income and spread wealth around without creating a welfare state. People don't want a welfare check. They want to work and they want to get fair pay for their jobs. Fair pay for what they do so finding a way to do that is very important. We've gone through a period where Republicans have simply said, Well, it just cut taxes and let the chips fall where they may. Well. The chips have ended up following falling into the laps of Wall Street in Silicon Valley. That's not spreading it around. So we gotta find a way to spread that wealth to more people, But not as a welfare check, but maybe as an earned income tax credit or something of that nature. But if you don't do that, you're gonna be back right back where you were 10 years ago. Of course, as we move forward, even though he world no longer be President, Donald Trump is going to be a towering figure in the party. What do you see for his future here? Keith? Is he still a viable potential candidate for 2024? I don't think he's a viable potential winner. I think he is a viable potential candidate in that he's got AH group of hard core supporters and in the nature of the Republican primary system on the presidential level is that you can get a minority of the vote. But as long as it's the largest minority, you can take all the delegates. You know you can really rack up. Big lead on the nomination contest getting only 30 32 35% of the vote and the far out ahead even though you don't have a real mandate, and the issue with President Trump is I don't think he can win a general election even if he's lost five or 6%, or that feeling has dropped by five for 6% points. That's just hopeless. So it's time to move on to someone who can win because in politics, winning is everything. If you don't hold the levers of power if you're in the outside, that's not heroic or principle that just being on the outside and let the opposition go go up to their own mischief. Of course, there will in 2022 B. U. S Senate and the entire House of Representatives up for re election or election again. Keith Republicans face a challenging map in the Senate. But in the House Remarkably this past year, Republicans really narrowed the gap. One area where Republicans need to improve their performance are in suburban areas around the country. Be interested in your thoughts as to what the party needs to do to try to recapture those votes. I think people need to feel comfortable with Republican candidates and comfortable with the message. I think that the hard core left on the Democratic Party. They can't help themselves. They're gonna push there. Agenda, which is not supported by a majority of the country, which I do not think is supported in the suburbs, the Republicans have to present a reasonable alternative. So the rhetoric has got to calm down. People are not interested in revolution. People are not interested in bringing what's happened in the protests in the city's after the suburbs, so they want things to be nice and calm. They're looking for an alternative to that progressive agenda, and that's what the Republicans need to provide. Let's talk for a minute about the Democrats. We have President elect Biden about to take the oath of office. Democrats will be in control very narrowly of both houses of Congress. Keith. We're getting mixed messages. The president elect's inaugural theme is Unity. On the other hand, we have his party in Congress, impeaching Donald Trump and engaging in a substantial amount of vitriolic rhetoric. Where does this leave the Democrats? They seem to be schizophrenic in their messaging. Joe Biden was the sort of an iodine alternative that everyone could get around rally around her really rally against Trump. So he's not that Big, charismatic leader like an Obama like Trump was for the Republicans or Ronald Reagan. So I think the result is you've got all the Democrats freelancing. You know, they don't have that same loyalty. We have been talking with Keith Naughton, who is we have silent majority strategies. He is a columnist for the Hill. Keith, Where can our listeners go to read your recent opinion column on where the GOP heads from here as well as your other writings even go to the hill dot com. I'm in the opinion section, along with a lot of other great writers. He's not of the hill. Calm and silent majority strategies, Keith Thanks as always, for being here. Thank you. Scott Parkinson from the club for Growth has the week off Filling in is Jessica Anderson. Jessica is the executive director of Heritage Action. She's here to talk about issues. Conservatives must focus on in the post Trump era. Jessica Welcome to American radio Journal, Jessica last year, Heritage Action was very successful with a grassroots effort at reaching out to something like 5.5 Million voters. As we go into 2021, which is not a federal election year, but where we're gonna have a lot of policy battles. What do you now do with those voters that you have already reached out to Well, I think first and foremost, we have toe recognize that voters all across the country are really looking for direction about where we go on a policy basis with our federal government. How does America They know in love and have learned to grow up with how does that succeed? How does it Wayne? What does it look like with federal and state policies that oftentimes try to limit opportunity or or limit economic freedom? And so when we were talking to voters the full year We were talking to these half 5.5.

Barrett deserves to be treated with respect that's coming from Tammy Bruce, she said. Yet the so called women's movement is standing by, while the mainstream media Questions. If Miss Barrett can be a Supreme Court justice and a good mother, in addition to vilifying her for her background and her faith, and that's Tammy Bruce talking, but At the opposite end of the mall. At the exact same time, there's going to be a another women's march. You recall the women's march of years ago where they do a million progressive ladies. Down on the mall that was in 2018. They're also planning an afternoon rally and march down the hall in that area. It's called the count on US events, and they're going to start at Freedom Plaza, not far from the White House and force trumps hotel down there, and after they get down down to the mall, they're going to have a mask. Texting effort about their cause. They expect to send out five million checks, and they also have 400 other marchers that are taking place in 50 other states. That's what they have to say. We need a huge and powerful mobilization to help energize the nation inspire millions to turn out to vote and to cap off Trump's presidency just the way it started with massive women led resistance. You got it. Two marches down there. One conservative one. Definitely progressive feminist. If you're curious about the conservative 1 march for all women simply go to march for all women dot com. A long line of people saying I'd love to run for statewide office as a Republican or anything democrat, even independent whatever because it's such a fun thing. Because you know, what happens I think that'll change too. When Meg Whitman ran in two thousand ten. And she did a lot of advertisers. You've paid for a lot of it. We ran a lot of radio spots here on AM seven sixty. She started having a dialogue and really stood out. Here's a strong smart woman. And she was talking about issues. She's going to win this thing. Especially funny about that the same people who look at that illegal now, they're the ones going. Hey, we don't need any walls. We don't need fences. How dare we think that we have any sovereignty come on in the benefits are fine. What is funny is that politicians, regardless of party seem to think that we don't have the internet anymore? Course not but it certainly right, so wrong of the balance of the court and hopefully will return it to a non put aside unbiased constitutional point is key at this I now, Jessica an unbiased court can't we still, expect the? Liberals left on the court even, if we get to six to three on the court with three being, the liberal contingent there's still gonna. Vote based on politics aren't they while I think the conservatives I I would hope would augur toward the. Example, of Antonin Scalia and say don't care what the result, is you simply have to go based. On, what the constitution says and let, the chips fall where they. May I. That's not the way Justice Scalia would have said it but I think that's a fair summation he he told? Some his law clerks don't write the the opinion Don't. And because he had logged clerks helping us all of them do he said don't don't write what you. Think, I want to see right what the constitution says I, wish we could get you know Ginsburg. Ins, and the rest of the liberals, to do that same thing Yeah I think that's exactly right but the beauty of the fact that the court is, a panel of nine allows for. That Plugin, Paul where you would have multiple. Conservative hopefully representing the, constitutionalists? Perspective and they would. Be overruling the activist nature, of those, you would certainly see some of that come out in their. Dissenting opinions We would have to monitor that vigilance look at. That but Cavanaugh nomination gives us you know really real chance of movie news decision passed just a panel of nine and really back to what is the constitution say, and how can if he upheld through. The court as opposed to the legislating from the bench which as, you say is what we've seen the last two, years and so there's. There's a lot here to be excited about and it certainly have downstream effects in. Returning power back you congress and back to the local state? Governments especially when, it, comes to cultural issues I almost wonder when I hear the liberals run the scare tactic they're going to reverse Roe. V, Wade that they they kind. Of expected conservatives will try the same tactics they've been using successfully where they persuade the courts can. You find a right to abortion somewhere, in the constitution and they say yeah we think we can find it and they jump through all the hoops and they find it even though it was Wasn't there can you find a right to marriage in, a document that never mentions marriage why should we, think we can do. That as well and they expected when contributors are solidly and probably for the next. Half century in control of the majority of the votes on? On the court, that, somehow will use the same tactics they've been using for a good long time at least back to the nineteen sixties That we've seen from cabinet history and certainly his twelve years on the bench his. Three hundred written legal opinions you see the heart of the and how he? Is going to interpret the constitution and he has pledged? To interpret it as written rather than this legislating for the Bank of his case and and just from a year ago four starburst garden city, for case and I I want to read you a line because I think it, really hit that exactly what you're talking Not a. Judge's job to add to or. Otherwise remould statutory tax to try to meet a. Statues perceive policy objectives instead he must apply the statute as so, I, think just even, in looking at that he's looking at, the constitution Spurs and precedent second so, when it comes to cultural issues like worldview. Way he's gonna look at the, constitution I go back to that and try to hold that and that's exactly the type of judicial review and injured initial law that we, need to see certainly going into. The next decade hopefully that will sit on the court MS Anderson I dunno if, you're one of those who subscribe to the theory I I will admit I am one that said that. Justice chief Justice Roberts made the ObamaCare, decision not because it was what. The constitution, said but because he was concerned about I think the courts image and that he wanted the court Not to be seen as a political body and by sort of bending over backwards far over. Backwards, beyond the constitution that he was somehow. Mandating that you know I found that very, persuasive it wasn't my original idea but I read. A lot to find out what other smart people have, for ideas but I wonder can. We maybe get the court to stop doing that as. Well stop worrying about what folks are going to think of the supreme court in its you. Know its legacy and all the. Rest of that and just make the decisions the. Constitution requires and it'll work out fine instead of trying to say, let's, make the constitution, or our decisions make the decisions that, will give the court the right reputation, in history I think that's a lousy way. To make decisions frankly and if, Justice Roberts was standing here I'd tell it to his face Well I think what you're getting out of exactly right which is that the structure of our constitution is meant to protect, our liberty, when judge Kavanagh's on the. Bench and the justices meet, again in October we want them to be you know actually reflecting and and ruling, on our liberties, and in doing so then they will have the pride enjoy American, people because that's what we want note right we want our constitution upheld they want, our fundamental, rights upheld and we want that you know front and center as opposed to having the court take them away or. Strip us of of what, the the safeguards should be provided by the petition a one last thing how much, do you think they're going. The Democrats are going to be able to hold up. The confirmation of judge Cavanaugh especially now, with the passing of Senator McCain Certainly trying they're trying. All in their style. Tactics we saw that with the mass hole. For a completely unprecedented amount of paper. Even, going back to his time as fast Terry the. Bush Whitehouse it's really not working and I think you see the comments by I'm Chuck Schumer last I guess two weeks ago now where he said. Literally lowering the expectations that, his own, beef he said well we don't have the process to be able, to stop this and and it says it's a small soap but he said in. It's? Worth pointing to you because. I think even the liberal last, understands that they can't any longer, and he's hearing date has been that it'll be September four I've watched three days of hearings and and hopefully if this goes smoothly wheels to sit. This political game and being political Ponge I'm really by the right or the left so I mean I think the ideal that we would look for that we. "Bohannon show with Jessica Anderson of heritage action for America we're looking at their efforts. To get, bread cavenaugh confirmed as the next supreme court, Justice said, we have. A, call from Charlie in Syracuse New York good evening, Charlie Jim I was, just a, simple thing, to, say The. The cash tuition, is set up with oversight in other words the. Constantly congress has the sole right to impeach now when the. Judge articles three, talks about operating, good behavior in other words when a judge I'm gonna go. Back in nineteen sixty two overseas with tally The day removed school prayer for like twenty. Thousand schools all, across the nation, who'd been for almost two hundred years reciting a little prayer And they used the Somehow they. Got around to party this is not prohibiting the free exercise No they did. Prohibit the free exercise so they're. Supposed to stay out of that one Somebody makes a major decision like that and takes. That you know that Christian, ethic off the whole country was that that's impeachable I, think and then in, seventy three. When they used. To privacy caused who is now resolved Medecin sixty. Million children you can't, they didn't have they don't have the right to make. Those decisions it should be impeached and that's the only oversight that the judges, will get that's, what, all the fighting is about as. They do anything they want their like they say On unregulated unelected tendered legislators I think that. That is true, in many cases I'm not sure if your specific examples where necessarily ones that I would sight but I think it can certainly be said Jessica Anderson that many judges have probably to the extent. Of their their interference in the. Elective. Process have have probably committed impeachable. Offenses your thoughts Well I. I think the ideal is that the judicial. Nominee at really any level and then if they're lucky enough to actually get to the bench either at the lower court or stream court they can't get caught up in. This political game and put a being political Ponge I'm really by the right or the left so I think the ideal that we would look for and that we. Should strive for that they're serving the American people and they? Have a duty to uphold the constitution but there are definitely cases where we've seen judges that. "Two six we're? Talking with. Jessica Anderson vice. President of heritage action for America there are eleven and a half billion dollar budget for this year is being spent. Principally to. Try and obtain the confirmation of bread Kavanagh is the next Justice on the supreme court we have Tamou calls in from Medford. Oregon this pardon me. Medford Wisconsin Tim good evening A few thousand miles there are there you go. Okay checked well I my question JIMBO is the one that I have I think a lot. Of people have and that is, the, fact that that some reports have, put, out the judge, Kavanagh's, ruling, on, the. Affordable Care Act ObamaCare that his decision that the wording of it. Was used by chief Justice Roberts is his blueprint to give the concurring opinion with the liberal side of the card and keep that. Law constitutional that does give me some pause and. I was wondering if Sanderson does that gives. You or any? Other, conservative, spas, as well Hey Jim why they are. Tim thank you for. Thank, you for your call so I think these are the exact conversation that senators are. Happy with Justice or Judge Kevin excuse me right now and where we need to look incredibly closely I, where he is previously. Spoken about the repeal effort for ObamaCare and what that would look like so you know. I haven't. Met, with him yet to actually ask him that question the. Case that year and actually I don't, think I I will but the case that you're referring to is one that we are looking at as well and what, I'm looking for his did he does he uphold the constitution well he protect the constitution on an ensure that will he see the lines a day and I think the best thing that I've seen so far from him. Is that he goes to constitution I and precedent second so unlike other nominees that have come From those on. The last you, look at precedent and then you try to reapply wa but is not his record and. That gives, me a lot of, hope I'm, not he'll be with us on the effort hopefully when the house and Senate return to effort to repeal ObamaCare in January if not sooner. So I think there's. A, lot there that we can unpack it doesn't give me pause because I I see. His judicial background and I I'm happy with that but I totally understand the case you're looking at it, think those exact questions. That we need to be asking yeah It does seem that the the battle to pick ideological, clones the democratic presidents have done a better job of. Picking Let's say a, pretty doctrinaire liberals than Republican presidents have picking doctrinaire conservatives Well I think what we're finding. Within that pregnant wanted to to nominate someone that was a qualified nominee and so when he looked at the original list, that he had all the way back from the, campaign in, Judge Kevin I wasn't on that originalist within the second list but I I was. Really this, drain the, swamp lesser president didn't. Want anyone on the list that was you know was from Washington DC, so Cavanaugh missed that list. Because he was a Justice here in Washington our judge here, in Washington so the second list. That he made it to was. Really I think reflected that they wanted he wanted someone that was qualified he wanted the best of the best in the law and looking at the. US of appeals for the DC circuit was exactly where to find out and we talked about earlier meeting the judge, has over three hundred cases and either really, complicated everything from cultural issues all the way down to something. Like healthcare and he's been Wayne in on that at the federal level That's a lot, to go through that it's exactly what this, process is supposed to reveals just as a Justice worse itch You're not gonna get a lot better than. This quite frankly there are no. Perfect judicial nominees anymore than there are. Perfect politicians defined as someone who agrees with me one hundred percent of the time Yeah. I mean, that's absolutely right so but I do think in terms of what we wanna look at from him I mean I would look at rulings. That he's had a route radio ministry of state I mean this is this. Is exactly what this president is. About in ruling against kind of the regulatory overreach that happens in in in the administration so. He's got, really good cases around that around EPA really back those racks so. I would look at those I would also look at his work around. Religious liberties and freedom, of speech and second amendment I mean he is solid in defending religious liberty of all. Of all Americans his work on second amendment rights was. Used by number of different cases civically, Heller verse DC which is one that I know many people across the. Country look, at with keen interests so there's a lot there for us to get behind but at the end of. The day I mean that JIMBO A picture, of this is is kind of the larger thing which is that. What conservatives and most other Republican right wants to see is this is. This principles unbiased unpoliticized judge not with a laundry list you know policy priorities but but with firm principles we're. Coming up on a break that doesn't move we'll take. That break and.

"Twitter at jimbotalks, as we talk about the next supreme court Justice of. The. United States red. Cavanaugh well that's not a done deal but personally my betting would be that it'll probably happen certainly no slam dunk this talk about the process and the. Progress in. That. Direction with Jessica Anderson the vice president of heritage action for America Online. At heritage action dot com good evening Jessica Jim thanks for. Having me. Absolutely The Heritage Foundation activist partners are spending the bulk of their eleven point five million dollar budget for the year on getting judge cavenaugh confirmed to the supreme? Court does is that. A A? Major big deal I, mean I can understand very easily that happening I'm not sure where else you would be spending that money are you shortchanging some other worthwhile efforts in that regard like the midterm elections While things Sarah so having you tonight so we are smoke as operating budget on getting Kevin across the finish line and I think the progress that we. Feed thus far in the last few will, relationships that we're right over the target where the American people. Care so much about getting into the. Court in our focus on his. Background and swiftly through the Senate so I'd say we're right over the target but what we're doing that may be a, little bit nuance we are actually engaging in the elections this coming fall are operating budget. Point sizes is going toward this effort with, Canada than we have any dishes funds that are outside of our operating budget which. Will go, directly towards the midterm elections and ensuring. That Republicans can keep the house so we're trying to do. With limited resources but certainly point EROs by the fight? Is today given that The entire choice here is up to one hundred people and with John McCain's physical, circumstance perhaps ninety nine how do you spend that money it's not as though you can. Can reach out to a wide variety of, people there's no national referendum on the issue just those hundred Yeah so I think our focus is really. On how we can target senators in particularly those Democrats that are in red states so we look at someone like Senator Manchin in West Virginia Senator tester of Montana Donald Deanna even Casey in Pennsylvania a pro life democrat that ran on life issue up to face with choice so what, are the state's mccaskill Missouri we've on what are, the states that Trump readily carried in the election on nearly two years. Ago that has Democrats sitting now and that democrat Senator has significant choice to make do they stay with their activists liberal face and, support Schumer's perspective. Here or do they try to? Save their own necks would their election and across the aisle at vote for President. Trump's candidate and I think the early. Progress that we're Were, seen even with someone, like Senator, Manchin sitting down with, judge Kavanagh's today as an indicator that these Democrats they have to take this. Serious then we're doing our best to make sure that the year that message so we're getting letters Theodore published in the states activists are engage actively studying up district videos that rally and direct kind of activism efforts with their senators and we're just gonna continue to see that increase the, month you know the Senate is is back in, their home states next week which will be pivotal for us to make. Sure they're hearing from everyone on the road Of course there are Republicans are hoping that they can maintain some kind of of cohesiveness but I would guess next to do the administration probably nobody is more interested in a cohesive Republican vote on Capitol Hill than the very aforementioned democratic senators, because if in fact Kavanagh's confirmation. Were to be a foregone conclusion then it would be pointless to sacrifice. Senators imagined mccaskill Don. Lee and so on they, would be more or less freed up to go ahead and and vote and make their voters in their. Home states happy so I I'm sure that they would would. Very much, like that their vote not be that crucial affect Claire mccaskill, I believe has been brother pointed in Missouri in not committing to how she will vote Well I don't think it's the same Duncan I. Think Republicans though that it's when I slam dunk I mean you know I heard today, let's not count our chickens before before its time, and I think that's right but I what I think is important is that there's a clearer liberal art. And how they're talking about the nomination hazards the nomination and how, they're reacting to the progress that's been made I. Mean we saw it right away. When the nomination was was made public liberal activists you know they had their minds date up about ever the judge would be. I mean, women's March I'm sure you saw this the women's March sent out a press release before the announcement was even out that said we oppose judge ex- ex- ex- insert name here as a exactly Oh yeah Crazy as they didn't even give the guy, a chance let alone have. His name so that was the first thing out of the out of the gamut and then deliver lafley turned their focus to, hypothetical ratings but what would? He do. Here's her she's not qualified or. Judicial philosophy, I mean the man has three hundred court rulings twelve years on. The court I, mean this this is a tax. Judicial nominees that is very principled in his unbiased at unpoliticized rulings has a lot to. Dig zero so Philip obese realize that they couldn't actually. Argue that so they go to different. Straw tactics and then what I saw, last week which I think Jim's you'll find with me was really the, most revealing which is that humor is already out there lowering expectations to the, democratic base and he's saying, things, like well we've run out of prestige rural options to stop. The confirmation so so even just the, adjustment, of What yard of the possible Is revealing because they know that I think Republicans are short off on. The right saw Senator rand Paul's get. To yesterday that was huge Ask you about the rand Paul I made. That, I guess that's still. Leaves well Susan Collins of Maine I'm not, sure about Lisa, Murkowski of Alaska and of course John McCain situation who knows if he'll. Ever set foot, in Washington again but but obviously rand Paul was was was very important that that surprise. You No it didn't. Surprise me that he got yes because I think Senator Senator rand Paul is a really thoughtful Senator he wants to go through the issues that matter most. When, it comes to the. Collection of a better doubt in Christ how, that really surprised, to see it unfold collection of data and this is a huge that. Was the big issue for him was that was that was a major issue That's it for him and you know she really wanted to, dig down, deep and you you really can't do that as much of your, face to face with the nominee and so when he had his in-person mediated staff he was able to to really. Go deep with the judge understand what, his speaking is there and and it's not that his concerns, are, announced I mean Senator policy out there. On, this issue really sense as far, as I can remember that he's. You know he has concerns in any sort of warrantless bolt collection of data and so wondering how the supreme court could, grow on a privacy case like that in the future is. Really important but at the end of the day republics smart guy and he even stated out his statements are Single issue decider that conversation judge parallel reinforced that he'd be textualist originalist I call that. A constitutionalize so that's good that's good, we have a, call from David and San Francisco Hello David Oh, thanks Jim in. Your guest. Guest is Jessica Anderson yes go ahead oh great.
